New Zealand has fully reopened to international travelers. Here’s what Filipino tourists need to know

After more than two years of strict lockdowns due to the COVID-19 pandemic, New Zealand is fully reopening its borders and welcoming back international travelers including Filipino tourists.

As of August 1, 2022, the country’s borders have fully reopened for the first time since the pandemic hit in March 2020. According to the New Zealand Embassy in Manila Twitter account on Monday, August 1, they are now accepting visa applications from the Philippines.

The country, which had one of the world's strictest COVID-19 lockdowns , gradually reopened their borders for domestic travelers and eased restrictions progressively earlier this year.

Filipinos who hold tourist, visitors and student visas will be allowed to enter New Zealand as long as they're fully vaccinated.

The country will also allow cruise ships and foreign recreational yachts to docks at its ports according to a Reuters report Monday.

The country of New Zealand is world-famous for its rugged and picturesque landscapes, which have been seen on the big screen in epic fantasy films like the Lord of the Rings trilogy, The Hobbit and The Chronicles of Narnia. New Zealand is also known for its indigenous Maori culture and national rugby team.

Top tourist sites in New Zealand include Hobbiton Movie Set Tours in Matamata, the mountain bike trails in Rotorua, Queenstown (known as the Adventure Capital of the World), and the World Heritage Site of Fiordland National Park (which includes Milford Sound), to name a few.

Travel requirements for Filipinos going to New Zealand as of August 1, 2022

According to the latest travel guidelines, foreign visitors arriving in New Zealand still need to be vaccinated against COVID. Tourists need to provide proof of their vaccinations. Any vaccine that has been approved by at least 1 government health authority or approval authority is approved for entry into New Zealand. Sinovac is among the list of approved vaccines. All those traveling by air also need to complete a New Zealand Traveler Declaration form. 

Those who are unwell before their flight may need to show proof that they don't have COVID-19 if they have symptoms. Proof can be a medical certificate issue by a health praticioers or proof of a negative COVID-19 test.

Do Filipinos need a visa to enter New Zealand?

Yes, Filipinos need a tourist visa to enter New Zealand. As of this posting, only consular visas are being accepted as iVisa does not offer the e-Visa to New Zealand yet. For the most updated requirements, visit Immigation New Zealand's website . 

In general, the following documents will be required to apply for a Visa.

Passport   – Filipinos who want to apply for a visa will need to have a valid passport. Make sure that the document is valid for at least another 3 months from your date of departure from New Zealand.

Digital photo   – the picture needs to be as recent as possible and meet all the other guidelines for a passport photo.

Means of payment   – Online payments will be required during the application process. You can do that using a credit or a debit card, but you can also pay using PayPal, Alipay, or WeChat.

Email address   – The visa is typically sent via email in PDF format. Do not forget to print a few copies so that you have a spare or two.

Proof of financial means   – Once you arrive in New Zealand, you need to prove that you can support yourself during your trip. A bank account statement may be needed as proof of financial status.

Return flight ticket   – when you arrive at the airport, you may be asked to show a return flight ticket to your country of origin (or another destination if you are in transit.) If you do not have one, you need to prove that you have the financial means to purchase one.

How long can Filipinos stay in New Zealand as a tourist?

Depending on your plans, you can visit and stay in New Zealand for up to 9 months. 

When is the best time to visit New Zealand?

New Zealand has four seasons, which all offer a different experience for tourists. Spring is from September to November, summer is December through to February, autumn is March to May, and winter falls on June through to August. July is usually the coldest month, and January and February are the warmest times of the year in NZ.

The best time to visit New Zealand is reportedly during the summer and early autumn months of December to March, when tourists can enjoy long, bright, sunny days, visit beaches and enjoy outdoor activities like hiking and mountain biking.

The Spring season from September, October and November offers a mix of weather, where sunny days can briskly change to cooler temperatures with spring showers.

I go nuts over the Lord of the Rings franchise, so when I was given the opportunity to travel to New Zealand a.k.a. ‘Middle-Earth’ for a press trip last year, you can imagine how ecstatic I was! …But then again, as a Philippine citizen, I found out that I needed to go first through yet another rigorous application to get myself a New Zealand visa for tourism.

I’m not exactly thrilled about my third world passport because of this since there’s always that chance that my request for a visa will get denied. Anyhow, the good news is — I’ve found out that applying for a tourist visa via the New Zealand Embassy is rather easy and also FREE ! So with that, I hope my guide below can help streamline the process for your ease so that you can also get that coveted tourist visa ASAP.

…But first, a disclaimer :

NO ONE can give you a guarantee on your New Zealand visa’s approval — not even a lawyer, a consultant, a travel agent, or an embassy employee. Anyone who says otherwise is most likely going to be a scammer.

That being said, what I can offer you here is a comprehensive guide with helpful tips to increase your chances of getting that New Zealand Visa. .

New Zealand Visa for Tourists

» what is a tourist or visitor visa for new zealand.

A visitor visa allows you to stay in New Zealand as a visitor or tourist for a limited amount of time to go sightseeing or to visit family, friends, or relatives. Personally, what I love about this type of visa in New Zealand is that it allows you to do certain things that are usually not allowed in typical tourist visas, such as:

• Play sports or perform in cultural events without pay
• Enter New Zealand to get married
• Undertake short-term study (but if you want to study for longer than 3 months, you will need to apply for a student visa)

» How long can I visit?

This is another thing that I love about the New Zealand tourist visa: you can visit for a maximum stay of 9 months in an 18-month period!

In special cases, you can even extend your stay for a further 3 months (a total of 12 months in a 24-month period) , if you need more time to complete your tourist itinerary, you can’t leave New Zealand for reasons beyond your control, or you’ve applied for residence for the first time.

To be eligible for this extension, you MUST have financially supported yourself, you have NOT worked, NOT studied, and NOT been sponsored during your stay.

» I’ve already visited New Zealand. I want to visit again! Is there anything I should be aware of?

If you have recently visited New Zealand and you wish to visit again, you should be aware that the instructions allow a visitor to stay a total of NO more than 9 months in an 18-month period. This 18-month period is calculated backward from the last day you intend to be in New Zealand.

For example, if you want to stay until 1 December 2017, you should count back 18 months, which would have been 1 June 2016.

However , if you have spent a total of 12 months in New Zealand as a visitor (wherein you extended to 3 more months after you reached the 9-month limit), you will have to remain outside New Zealand for 12 months before applying for another visitor visa again.

Application Process for New Zealand Visa

Step 1: determine the type of new zealand visa that you need to apply for.

There are, of course, various types of New Zealand Visas out there that you can apply for: a visa for studying, a visa for working, a visa for family reunification, etc.

For this particular guide, I will only be discussing the requirements for a visit or tourist visa since it’s an experience that I’ve gone through myself.

If, however, you have a complicated situation or a different purpose of visit, it’s best that you head over to this page of the New Zealand Immigration for more information.

Step 2: Register online to process your application

VFS Global is the external service provider that receives New Zealand visa applications on the Embassy’s behalf. Currently, there are 3 ways available for processing your application : (#1) by walking into VFS in-person or via a representative, (#2) sending it via courier, or (#3) doing it online.

Naturally, doing it online is the best option! But it helps to note though that you (or your representative) would still need to go to VFS to submit your passport after you accomplish and upload your documents online. ( NOTE : They won’t keep your passport, you only need to show it to them).

Speaking of ‘uploading’… to do such, you would also need a bit of computer ‘know-how’ on things like scanning and converting files to .PDF (but then again, these can be done cheaply at a computer or internet cafe shop; and I will even put some tips and links later on in this post for your ease).

That being said, doing options #1 and #2 sounds easier, right? Well… personally, I would still recommend option #3.

This is mainly because accomplishing the visa application form by hand (found here ) is a bit tedious — it’s really long, with parts that are often not applicable to your situation and that could easily confuse you.

On the other hand, filling out this visa application form online is a LOT easier because the site automatically skips parts that are not needed (as dependent on your answers). Moreover, if you’re lazy to go to VFS to send in your passport, you can have a representative send it for you!

If you still rather want to go for option #1 or #2, you can go to this page to know how to. And do take note that Immigration New Zealand does not require original documents. Original documents will be immediately returned upon application submission, so only submit photocopies of your supporting documents. IMPORTANT : If you’re traveling with family, it is now possible to apply for visitor visas together on one application online.

Now, since I applied for my New Zealand visa online , I will then be relaying to you my experience — which was so easy. Click the ( + ) symbol below to expand the section and see the detailed instructions.

How to Process your New Zealand Visa Online ?

• First, go to Immigration NZ . In the upper right corner, after you click ‘ Login ‘ a dropdown section will show. It will then show a ‘RealMe’ section with a button that says ‘ LOGIN or CREATE ACCOUNT ‘. Click this and it will lead you to the RealMe page. Click ‘Create Your RealMe Login ‘.

• The next page will ask for some of your basic information. Once done, click the button at the bottom that says ‘ Create My RealMe Login ‘.

• Click ‘ Continue ‘ on the next page and log in with the username and password that you created during sign-up.

• This will lead you to another page where you can create your profile. Just enter your full name under ‘ Display name ‘ as well as your email address in the email field box. Make sure that this email is ACTIVE. Click ‘ Agree and continue’ .

• The site will now tell you that it has sent a verification email to your email address. You must click on the link that they sent you so that you can proceed to use the site. Hence, log in to your email account, look for their email and click on the verification link they sent you. .
• Finally, you’re now at New Zealand’s Immigration Online portal. Under ‘ Applications ‘, click ‘ Create a new visitor visa application’. .
• A page titled ‘Is this form right for you?’ will show up next. I answered with the following. Take note that under ‘Do you have a MasterCard or Visa card to pay for your application?’ I selected ‘Yes/I am from a fee waiver country’ — this is because as Philippine citizens, as long as your tourist/visit will only be less than 59 days, we do NOT need to pay a visa fee ( hurray! ). Once done, just click ‘ Start my Application ‘.

• Complete all answers to all questions in English.
• You do not need to complete all of the contents of the application form at once. You can save your application form at any time and come back later to finish it.
• The sections may be completed in any order after you have completed the first two sections. You can move between sections by clicking ‘ Continue ‘ or by clicking another section title (when you move to a different section, the application form is saved).
• After 30 minutes of inactivity, you will be logged out. Any unsaved information will be lost. .
• Somewhere at the end, you will need to upload documents to support your application — I will discuss this more in Step #3 below.

Step 3: Prepare and submit additional required documents

As I mentioned previously, while you’re filling in your New Zealand visa application online, the site will ask you in the end to upload relevant supporting documents based on the answers you provided.

Below is a list of the documents I uploaded, which you can upload too. Those marked with an asterisk ( *** ) are the basic requirements.

NOTE: You can only use .JPG file type for your photo, and the rest should be in .PDF under 10MB size. . If you’re not familiar with .PDF files, I have a section below with tips and explanations on how to do such — it’s very easy! Otherwise, these can be done quickly by any computer or internet cafe shop.

• *** Passport-sized Photos — kindly check this video to see the proper guidelines for providing a valid passport photo .
• *** Passport Biodata Page — this is a copy of your passport’s first page which contains your passport data and personal information. .
• If you have a sponsor, it’s helpful to also include a signed letter from your sponsor (this could be your employer or any other third party such as a family, a friend, a relative, etc.) that indicates how they will be sponsoring your trip. It also doesn’t hurt to show your own financial documents together with your sponsor’s financial documents.
• If you have a sponsor that is a family, friend, or relative, you must also submit Proof of Relationship with the said sponsor. These can be photos, chat conversations, birth certificates, etc. .
• You can easily get a flight reservation online with OneWayFly for a small fee of only Php 1,000~. I highly recommend them because they are fast, easy, and legitimate; plus, I have been using them for years for all of my visa applications! (Read here for more info).
• You can upload this under ‘ Evidence ‘ on ‘ Evidence that you’re a bona fide applicant ‘. This is basically the section that asks for proof that you will return to the Philippines after your trip.
• In case you’re wondering where to look for the best flight deals, my go-to platform is Skyscanner .
• You can upload this under ‘ Letter from your employer ‘ on ‘ Evidence that you’re a bona fide applicant ‘. This is basically the section that asks for proof that you will return to the Philippines after your trip. .
• Proof of real properties, as available (could be a land title, a car registration, etc.)
• Business license, ITR, and/or financial statements, if self-employed
• Proof of enrolment and leave of absence, if a student
• Marriage certificate, if married
• Birth certificate of children, if a parent (it helps especially if you’re not traveling with your children to New Zealand)
• Past stamps and travel visas on your passport (it helps if you show your past New Zealand visa and stamps)

Start filing your local taxes as early as NOW — after all, a lot of embassies (not only New Zealand) require an ITR. So if you’re looking for a hassle-free experience on Philippines tax compliance, I suggest registering with Taxumo because they can take care of literally everything for you: tax forms, payments, and submissions. • I usually book my hotel stays via Booking.com and/or Agoda.com . With them, you can book a hotel with NO pre-payment and you can even cancel the booking a day before your arrival with NO cancellation charges at all. So yes, you can make reservations without any payment, you can change the reservation anytime, and you can cancel them at no cost as well if in case your visa is not approved.

You will see later on that some sections on the upload page are not enough if you want to provide more related supporting documents or pieces of evidence. If this happens, it’s not a problem to collect related documents in one (1) .PDF for upload on a certain section.

That being said, just remember to keep related files together and to NOT split them. This means, that for example, if you have a lot of pages for your bank statements, keep them together in one .PDF file. If you want to include your bank certificate, then you can include it in the same .PDF as the bank statements since they’re related — but put the certificate only after all your bank statement copies.

How to do .PDF files?

◘◘ How can I make .PDF files? It’s fairly easy especially if you already know how to operate Microsoft Word. You just first need to scan your documents, paste them to Word and then save as .PDF. (For more detailed instructions, read here .)

◘◘ How can I merge multiple documents into one .pdf? You can paste scanned copies of documents or images in a Word document and then under ‘ Save as…’ click on PDF.

◘◘ My .PDF size is too large! How can I keep it below 10MB? Read here on how to compress your .PDF

Step 4: Submit your passport to VFS

Once you finish and submit your New Zealand visa application online, a final ‘ Thank You ‘ page will show. Print this page . It will tell you to submit it together with your passport to VFS.

At this point, you can:

• Go to VFS immediately to submit the ‘ Thank You ‘ page and passport; or,
• This email arrived a day after I submitted my application online.

The way I see it, you can just go to VFS immediately to submit your passport without waiting for the email. But if you are busy and want to save time, you can just wait for this email so that IF in case the Embassy wants other documents from you, you won’t have to come back several times to VFS.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Even if the embassy now issues e-visas, you still need to show your passport at VFS.

Now, to submit your passport, you can:

• Submit in Person. VFS is open from Mondays to Fridays, except for holidays, from 7:00 AM to 2:00 PM (Manila) and 7:00 AM to 1:00 PM (Cebu). The address are as follows… VFS Global Services Philippines Private Inc., Mezzanine Floor Unit M01, Ecoplaza Building, 2305 Chino Roces Avenue Extension Makati City, Metro Manila 1231 . VFS Global Services Philippines Private Inc., 9th Floor, Keppel Center, Unit 905, Samar Loop cor. Cardinal Rosales Avenue, Cebu Business Park, Cebu City 6000 .
• Submit through a Representative. Just provide an authorization letter with copies of your ID and the representative. .

TIP : Don’t bring any electronic device, power bank, or cords because for some reason, the guard will not allow it inside the office. (There is a locker room nearby that you can deposit these things into and it costs Php 75.00). Rest assured, your phone is the only electronic device that they allow inside.

As for payments , as I’ve mentioned before, there is NO visa fee to be paid to the embassy if you’re staying 59 days or less. (If you are planning to stay for more than 59 days, the visa fee is NZD$165 or about Php 6,000~).

However, as of this year, New Zealand implemented an IVL fee wherein all tourists need to pay $35 to help invest in the country’s sustainable tourism growth.

In addition to this, even if you’re visiting for less than 59 days, you still have to pay a small separate fee which is for VFS’ handling of your application as being the middle man. The breakdown will be…

Php 570 / per application = Visa handling Php 110 / per application = SMS reminders Php 380 / per application = Courier return (if you want it to be delivered)

In VFS, you or your representative can pay in cash, credit card, or bank transfer. If you’re planning to submit by post, you can send your payment by bank transfer. To know how to do the bank transfer, see here .

Once everything is submitted and paid for , remember to keep the payment receipt . Later on, you will also receive an acknowledgment email from Immigration New Zealand that they have received your application.

***UPDATE AS OF JANUARY 2018: Starting this year, the New Zealand Embassy will start granting electronic visas (or eVisa) if you apply online — so ensure that you have a VALID and ACTIVE email address. As such, you should not also be surprised if you will not have a physical visa label on your passport. Just print your visa approval letter which will include your visa details, keep it in a safe place, and carry it with you when you travel to New Zealand.

Step 5: Wait for the results of your New Zealand Visa

Customarily, the processing time for online applications of New Zealand visas is within 20 days — this, of course, entirely depends if all of your documents are complete, or if Immigration NZ will need more from you.

It’s said that if you have or had visas issued by first-world countries, you can receive your results in just 3-5 working days . Me? I got mine in just 2 working days and it’s mostly because mine was a special case ( I was going on a press trip to New Zealand with their tourism board and Singapore Airlines; I was pressed for time and Singapore Airlines thankfully sent a request to expedite my application ).

NOTE : You can apply for a faster or streamlined visitor visa processing IF you are a Singapore Airlines PPS Club, KrisFlyer Elite Gold or Elite Silver member — and a citizen of one of the following countries: China, India, Indonesia, Philippines, Thailand, or Vietnam. When applying online, there will be a section there that asks for info regarding this. If applying by paper, you will have to provide a copy of your PPS Club, KrisFlyer Elite Gold or Elite Silver membership card showing that it is current.

Anyhow, most of my friends got their visas in just 3 days. To give you an idea of my timeline…

• September 20: Submitted my online application at 11:00PM
• September 21: Got a letter from Immigration NZ to submit my passport to VFS, and so I did
• September 22: Got an email saying that the Embassy was processing my application
• September 23: I was notified that I can pick up my passport with visa

Take note that you can only retrieve your passport from 2:00PM to 4:00PM from Mondays to Fridays in VFS Manila (or 1:00PM to 4:00PM in VFS Cebu) .

NOTE: They typically notify you both by email and SMS. But it’s good practice to check both to be sure (make sure to check your spam/junk folder too in case the Embassy’s email gets sent to that part of your mailbox.) If you want to track your application, you can check here .

TIP : Don’t bring any electronic device, power bank, or cords because, for some reason, the guard will not allow it inside the office. (There is a locker room nearby that you can deposit these things into and it costs Php 75.00). Rest assured, your phone is the only electronic device that they allow inside.

TIP: It’s a good idea to crosscheck the prices with other popular travel insurance providers like World Nomads and HeyMondo (as my reader, you get 5% off)! . However, take note a travel insurance’s affordability typically means lesser coverage; so please always ensure that you read the fine print in order to decipher which travel insurance company is the right fit for you and your trip!

FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

There is no concrete answer to this on any page of Immigration NZ’s website. I asked their ‘middle man’, VFS and they told me that the embassy does not have any requirement for the number of days before anyone can apply. So a person can apply any time and once granted, the validity of the visa will be based on the intended date of travel.

From what I saw on Immigration NZ’s website, you must at least have NZD$1,000 per month (for 1 pax, that’s around Php 36,000~ or USD$710~) or at least NZD$400 per month (or around Php 14,700~ or USD$280~) if you’ve already paid for your accommodation.

If it can support your application even further, then sure! The Embassy encourages that, especially if it can help provide more proof or evidence to your situation.

Like I’ve mentioned above, it can take 3-5 working days, or up to 20 days (and more, if in case the Embassy wants more documents from you) . I got mine in just 2 working days for being a Singapore Airlines Elite Silver member. (See ‘Step 5’ section above for more details).

I didn’t do any interviews. VFS was only there to collect and check your documents. However, it is possible that the Embassy of New Zealand will call or request you to visit them for an interview after they receive your documents — but I’ve never heard of such a case when applying for a tourist visa only.

Hi! In one of your notes you said that VFS will only check our passports and we will NOT leave our passports with them. How come I am seeing in the comments that people are waiting to receive their passports from VFS? Sorry kinda confused. Thank you!

Apologies for the confusion, there were some changes before so some text above are things I forgot to edit. Anyhow, to date, they still keep your passport and then afterwards issue an e-visa if your application is approved. Hope that helps!

My favorite country in the world, New Zealand. It’s the real-life “Middle Earth” where I experienced the most epic road trip in my life! It’s the land of Kiwis, the Maori, geysers, glaciers, alps, coastlines, mountains, fjords, and adrenaline sports. I can go on for days! This breathtaking country is just endless and I’d go back in a heartbeat.

Last December 2022, my husband (then fiance) and I applied for a New Zealand Visitor Visa for our honeymoon. We thought that the overall process was smooth and easy. And get this, the visa application fee is waived for Filipino citizens! It’s free if you only plan to visit for 59 days or less.

We were first-time applicants. We received our visa confirmation after 33 calendar days . The embassy approved us of a multiple-entry one-year visa validity. It was the best wedding gift I could ever ask for!

If you’re planning to apply for a New Zealand visa but have no idea where to start, read on. Below is my 5-step guide on how a Philippine passport holder can apply for a New Zealand visa for tourists and visitors.

Oh and by the way, every now and then I will mention “INZ”. INZ means Immigration New Zealand . They are the official government agency that manages border control, immigration, and visa issuance.

What I’ll share are guidelines and tips that worked for me. Applying for a visa is on a case-to-case basis, so nothing will ever guarantee your approval. My best piece of advice? Honesty is the best policy, always.

A New Zealand Visitor Visa lets you stay in the country for a limited time. This is the visa to get if you’re a tourist on holiday or if you plan to visit friends or family staying in New Zealand.

So yes, New Zealand’s visitor visa is both a tourist and a visit visa in one ! Plus, with this visa type, you can enter the country for these other reasons:

• Play sports or perform in cultural events without pay
• Enter New Zealand to get married (so dreamy)
• Undertake a short-term study of up to 3 months. For anything more than 3 months, apply for a student visa.

For Philippine passport holders, the visa application is waived if you’ll be in New Zealand for 59 days or less. Yes, it’s free! Each person only has to pay an International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy for Php 1,260.

There are several visa types for different purposes that one can apply for. Such as Study Visas, Work Visas, Family reunifications, etc.

For this guide, I will only discuss the Visitor Visa . Since it’s the one I applied for. Again, this is the visa for tourists and visiting purposes.

If you plan to apply for a different visa type, go to the official site of Immigration New Zealand .

You have 3 main options to choose from:

• Online application
• Personal Submission: Appointment or Walk-in
• Application if you’re outside the Philippines

I’ll discuss each in detail.

This is obviously the more convenient choice. This is done purely online so you can do it in the comfort of your home. You just have to fill out the application form online. Then upload the required documents. The visa is in electronic format. So there’s no need to submit your actual passport to the embassy.

The work here is on scanning each page of your documents and organizing them in PDFs. Make sure that you scan a clear high-quality copy of your passport . Otherwise, INZ will ask you to go to their receiving center, VFS Global, just to show your passport.

HOW TO APPLY ONLINE

1. Open the Immigration New Zealand page. On the upper right tab, click LOG IN and choose Visitor Visa from the options.

2. A drop-down option will appear at the bottom of the page. Choose Visitor Visa (General) from the list. You may need to scroll down to see this.

3. The ‘RealMe’ section will appear. Click the button LOG IN or CREATE AN ACCOUNT .

4. Set-up your RealMe account by providing the following info:

• Email address
• 3 Security questions and answers
• Proving you’re a human – enter characters you see on the picture

5. Accept  the terms and conditions and click  Continue

6.  Accept  the account security disclaimer to create your Immigration Online Profile.

7. You will be redirected to the Immigration Online page. Enter your display name and your email address. Use the ones you provided in #4. Click Agree and Continue .

8. You will receive 2 emails:

• An email from RealMe saying that your Registration is successful, and
• An email from Immigration Online to verify your account. Double-check your Spam folder if you haven’t received an email.

9. To activate your account, click the Verification Link in the email from Immigration Online. Then follow the links provided to verify your account.

10. Click View My Account and then Visitor Visa to complete the online application form.

IMPORTANT NOTES:

• The next pages will be forms asking about your personal information. It’s straightforward.
• You don’t need to finish the form in one seating. You can save it and answer it later.
• After 30mins of inactivity, you will be logged out. Any unsaved information will be lost.
• If you’re not sure what the question means, use INZ’s official guide when answering the application form. You can access it here .

For On-Paper applications, the visa processing agency of New Zealand is VFS Global.

This option was my choice. Firstly, because I was applying for myself and my husband. It’d be easier for me to just have the physical copies of our documents. Rather than taking the time to arrange everything in PDFs. Secondly, this was our first time applying so I want to be advised on what to do.

For example, my husband and I went to VFS Global. Each of us brought our own application forms and set of requirements. When handing them over, the attendant asked us questions. About our relationship, or if we have the same itinerary, etc. Then she advised us that we fall under the group application category . So we should only submit one application form. And I should add my husband under my application.

VFS Global charges a processing and handling fee of Php 1,160 for each application. Again, this is per application – not per person. Since we’re under one application, we only paid Php 1,160.

With this option, you can either submit your documents personally by going to VFS Global Manila or Cebu. Or you can send your documents through courier .

PERSONAL SUBMISSION: BY APPOINTMENT OR WALK-IN

For personal submission, you can either schedule an appointment or simply walk-in.

APPOINTMENT

1. To schedule an appointment, go to the New Zealand VFS Global page. Click Book Now .

2. On the Sign-In box, click Activate my Account below.

3. Click the Sign Up link below.

4. Create your VFS Global Account and fill out the fields. Then Register

For walk-ins, you can go ahead to VFS even without an appointment. You just need to pay for an additional Php 636 premium appointment fee, on top of the Php 1,160 VFS handling fee. Again, these fees are per application, and not per person.

In our case, we just walked in. There was no queue when we got to VFS. We were done in just 30 minutes.

Authorized Representative

Note that in case you can’t go to VFS, you can have an authorized representative go there on your behalf. The representative of the applicant must show an authority letter confirming this arrangement. With signature copies of the IDs of the applicant/s and the representative.

The courier fee is Php 380, which is on top of the VFS handling fee of Php 1,160. Again, these fees are per application, and not per person.

• Choose any courier that you prefer: LBC, Air21, 2GO, etc.
• Submit your required documents with your passport. Make sure that your passport has your signature on page 3.

Yes, you have to submit your actual passport but don’t worry, VFS will deliver it back to you. On a piece of paper, along with your documents, write your return address and the type of visa that you applied for.

VFS Global Manila and Cebu’s complete postal address are in Step #4 below.

The complete address of VFS Global Manila and Cebu is at Step #4. Just submit your set of requirements to them. Then they will scan everything for you and lodge your application online.

If you have queries on the application process, contact VFS Global: 028-528-2504. This is their line for New Zealand applications. They are responsive to all queries. They also accommodate questions about answering the application form and requirements.

If you’re residing abroad, you also have the option to apply either online or paper-based.

HOW TO APPLY IF YOU’RE OUTSIDE THE PHILIPPINES

1. Visit the INZ page for the center finder.

2. Go to the drop-down option at the middle of the page. It’s under ‘ Fees and Receiving Centre ‘. Select Visitor Visa .

3. Select the Philippines for your passport and enter your current location. For example, you’re currently residing in Singapore.

4. Select your preferred application: Online or On Paper . And choose How Many People are Included in the Application . Then select View Fees and Receiving Centre.

And that’s it! The page will show you the following information:

• Processing time
• Receiving center details
• Payment method
• Contact and hours

For the online application , the process is the same with PH-based applicants.

Click the How To Apply Online button from Option 1.

Those are the options! Which mode of application is more convenient for you?

I listed below everything that I submitted to the embassy. It may sound overwhelming for first-time applicants so I wrote a separate guide explaining each item off the list. Here’s the list as required by INZ:

• Completed visitor visa application form or form INZ 1017
• Passport (with signature on page 3)
• Two-passport sized color photos
• Medical Certificate (for those who’ll stay for more than 6 months)
• If sponsored – Sponsorship form for Temporary Entry or INZ 1025
• If self-funded – financial documents in your name (bank certificate, bank statements, credit card statements etc.)
• Have a ticket out of New Zealand
• Evidence that you have the money to buy one
• Evidence of Relationship with your travel companion
• Supporting documents: evidence that you are a bona fide visitor (strong ties, employment, tourism activities, etc.)

As you’ve noticed, INZ used the word ‘evidence’. It’s because they aren’t too specific with the documents. So it’s entirely up to you how you can show them that you’re financially capable. Or that your intention is purely sightseeing or visiting.

The good news is there are a lot of documents that you can submit! I have a separate blog dedicated just for the New Zealand visa requirements . Make sure to read it too!

If you opted for online application , the entire application is done purely online.

To upload your documents, scan each page then arrange and organize them in PDFs. Paste the scanned copies of your documents or images using MS Word. Then ‘Save As’ PDF. Tip: Make sure to include a cover page for each section to keep it organized.

If the PDF file is too large, compress it to keep it below 10MB.

Since we chose on-paper application, we had to submit our documents in person.

When we went to VFS Global Makati, there was a long line on the ground floor. But that’s for the Schengen visa applicants because their processing is in the same building. So we went past the line and informed the guard that we were there for New Zealand. There was no queue for New Zealand so the guard asked us to go ahead up. We were entertained as we arrived. Done in just 30 minutes!

After submitting your documents, the only thing you can do is to wait.

They will only contact you if:

• They need more documents for you to submit or;
• To let you know whether your application is approved or not

Here’s the timeline of our application process:

12/14/22 : Date of application and submission of requirements to VFS Global, Makati

12/16/22 : We received an email from INZ that they received our application

01/18/23 : We received an email from INZ that our visa was approved. Yey!

The overall processing duration was 33 calendar days . Keep in mind that the processing time varies.

My husband and I were in a group application . Since I was the primary applicant , I was the only one who received the email confirmation. My husband didn’t receive anything. But his name and passport details were stated on the confirmation letter. Make sure to print this letter when you travel.

The visa itself is in an electronic format. The visa will automatically reflect on the system records as you travel. They don’t use a sticker or a visa label for the passport.

For us, it was 33 calendar days.

The time for them to decide on visa applications depends on the following:

• The complexity of the application
• Whether or not further information will be asked/is needed
• The number of other applications INZ received

New Zealand doesn’t have a specific rule or timeline on when you can submit your application. So it’s up to you. To be safe, 6 months prior would be a good rule of thumb so you can be more flexible with your plans.

Visa Processing – Free

International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy: Php 1,260

VFS Global Handling fee: Php 1,600

VFS Global Walk-in fee: Php 636

Total: Php 3,496

If you are confident with your documents, then I would highly suggest that you buy a plane ticket. Part of the requirements listed by the INZ is to have a pre-purchased travel ticket outside of New Zealand. In this way, you can establish that you’re a bona fide visitor who plans to leave New Zealand at the end of your stay.

As an alternative, you can also submit a flight ticket reservation. And show strong proof of financial documents that you are capable to purchase a travel ticket out of New Zealand at any time.

You don’t have to yet. It’s not specifically stated on the list of requirements.

But the limited accommodations in New Zealand book out so fast. Especially the towns in South Island. So we had to book ours already.

This is not listed as a required document by the INZ. But to strengthen our application, we bought travel insurance for our travel dates. We included it under the “Evidence of Bona Fide Visitor” documents.

Also, we would need the insurance for a road trip 100% haha! #SafetyFirst

There’s no specific answer to this, but personally, my safe amount would be at least 6-digits worth. Not including airfare. Make sure that the amount reflects on your ADB (average daily balance).

As stated on the INZ website, the minimum financial requirement is at least NZ$1,000 or Php35,000 per month. This is for each of the persons included in the application. This is only for your day-to-day expenses when you get to New Zealand. The money for buying your flights in and out of New Zealand shouldn’t be included.

If you have someone to sponsor your trip, the financial burden will shift to your sponsor so he/she will need to show financial capacity documentation.

We were approved for 1-year validity. I’m not too sure if it’s the commonly approved validity duration.

For families and partners, the application will be treated collectively.

For example, my then-fiance and I applied together. We have the same itinerary, flight, accommodation, etc.

So we only had to submit one application form. In the same application form, there’s a section where I can add my travel companion and my relationship with him. For the ‘shared’ documents like accommodations, car rental in New Zealand etc., we only submitted one. But for the personal documents such as bank accounts, we submitted our own.

No. An Australian transit visa is different. But we didn’t need one because we didn’t layover in Sydney for more than 8 hours. No overnight layovers or anything like that. Also, Qantas Airways brought our pieces of luggage from Manila straight to New Zealand. So make sure to check how your chosen airlines will handle your luggage.

Two ways to apply for a New Zealand Tourist Visa

OPTION 1: Online application

OPTION 2: Paper/Personal application through VFS Global Manila

In this article, we will discuss the process of both options.

Where to Get a New Zealand Tourist Visa

Manila: Mezzanine Floor, Ecoplaza Bldg., 2305 Don Chino Roces Ave Ext, Makati City 

Cebu: VFS Global Cebu, 9th Floor, Keppel Center, Unit 905, Samar Loop cor. Cardinal Rosales Avenue, Cebu Business Park. 

VFS is open from Monday until Friday from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM in Manila while 8:00 AM to 2:00 PM in Cebu. They are both closed on holidays.

Main requirements in applying for a New Zealand Tourist Visa

• Proof of identity. It must include 2 photos if you will be using a paper application form or 1 photo if you will apply online.
• A valid passport
• Copy of your passport’s personal data page.
• Proof of financial capability. It must include your bank certificate or bank statement for the past 6 months, your pay slips, credit card statements, lease contract in which you are the lessor, etc. 
• Proof of financial capability of your sponsor, if you have any. This sponsor could be your relative, friend, employer, etc. You must also submit a signed letter from your guarantor that he/she will be the one that will pay or provide for your trip. If your guarantor is a relative, then you can submit proof of relationship like your birth certificate/photos.
• Proof of onward travel. Remember that y ou must have a CONFIRMED ticket to leave New Zealand or you can least have a sponsor that will cover this cost. You can also prove this by having enough funds to cover the cost in addition to your day-to-day expenses. Try booking a Rent a Flight confirmed ticket reservation with us for $30 only.

Supporting Documents for a New Zealand Tourist Visa

For employees: Submit your original Certificate of Employment, approved leave of absence, ITR(Income Tax Return), or a copy of PRC Card or IBP Card, if you have one.

For Digital Nomads/ Online Work: PayPal or income history, proof of work online (it can be screenshots).

For Business owners: Your c opy of Business Registration from SEC or DTI, copy of Business Permit or Mayor’s Permit, ITR, etc.

For students: School Certificate (Original), copy of enrollment form, etc.

Please be noted to always keep the receipt of your bank statement/bank certificate as they usually ask for this. Please write a cover letter so you can explain your travel plan and your itinerary.

Step-by-Step Guide on Your Online Visit Application for New Zealand

STEP 1: Visit the page of New Zealand Immigration. Select the type of visa that you plan to apply for. Afterward, a page will ask you to create an account . 

STEP 2: Follow all the steps and completely provide all the details that they are asking for. After that, It will lead you to a verification link and it will be sent to your email address. Click on that link. If you can’t see this email, then just check your spam folder.

STEP 3: Once you click the link, you will be redirected to New Zealand’s Immigration Online portal. Under ‘ Applications ‘, click ‘ Create a new visitor visa application’. 

STEP 4: To know if you are on the correct page, you will be directed to an ‘Is this form right for you?’ page. Just answer it with a yes or a no. Please remember that the Philippines is a fee waiver country. 

STEP 5: Finally, y ou can now start your application. Answer the forms truthfully and completely. 

STEP 6: Upload all your documents. Take note that you can only use a JPG file type for your photo, while the rest should be in a PDF file that is under 10MB in size.

STEP 7: When you finished and completed everything, you will be directed to a ‘Thank you’ page. Just print it and Submit your passport either personally or through an authorized representative to VFS Global.

STEP 8: Pay the VFS Service Fee . The application lodgement fee is about PHP 1,100 per application and the courier return (optional) is around PHP 380 per application. They will send you an email when your passport is set for release. 

STEP 9: Just w ait and hope that your visa will get approved.

Step-by-Step Guide on Your Paper/Personal Visit Visa Application for New Zealand

STEP 1: Complete the Visa Application Form . A ttach 2 colored visa photos with your name at the back. 

STEP 2: Submit all the required documents together with your passport and a photocopy of your passport’s bio page. For new passports issued from August 2016 onwards, do not forget to sign on page 3. Otherwise, they will not accept your visa application. Remember to ensure that you have a clear photocopy of all your original documents.

STEP 3: Pay the VFS Service Fee of around PHP 1,100 per application and PHP 380 (optional) per application for the courier return fee. You can pay this in cash or bank transfer . 

STEP 4: Get your receipt and just wait for your passport to be released.

Visa Processing Fee for a New Zealand Tourist Visa

It’s free if you’ll be staying for less than 60 days.

Visa processing time: It usually takes 20 working days or more.

Frequently Asked Questions About New Zealand Tourist Visa

1. Do I need to have a ‘show money’?

Yes. Since they’re asking for your proof of financial capability, you need to prove to them that you can finance yourself while you’re in New Zealand. You should have at least 1000 NZD per month of your intended stay and 400 NZD if you already paid for your accommodation.

2. Can I submit more documents?

Of course! We actually encouraged you to submit more documents like land/condominium title, car registration, etc. to prove your strong tie to the Philippines . 

3. How long is the visitor visa valid?

Tourists to New Zealand can stay up to 9 months on a visitor visa unless otherwise stated! It is also possible that they will allow you to stay for 3 months more if you have financially supported yourself and you have not worked, studied, or been sponsored during your initial stay.

4. Do I need to have a confirmed return ticket?

Yes. It is a requirement.

5. Can I track my application?

Of course! You can track it here.

6. How can I get my passport once it is ready for release?  

You or your representative (with authorization, your id, and his/her valid ID) can either pick up from the VFS Global. You may also choose to have it sent to your address via courier but of course, you have to pay the courier fee.

7. Do I need to have travel insurance ?

Though New Zealand is perfectly a safe country, we still recommend you to get insurance . We don’t know what will happen during your trip. Having one is advisable! Safetywing is highly recommended!

Aotearoa New Zealand enjoys welcoming visitors (manuhiri) to our beautiful country.

Having a valid passport, the right visa and completing the entry requirements are key to a trouble-free entry into New Zealand.

Your passport has to be valid for at least three months beyond your intended departure date, and if required, have a valid New Zealand visa .

New Zealand visa options

Visiting new zealand for a holiday.

You do not need a visa to visit New Zealand if you are:

• A New Zealand citizen travelling on a New Zealand passport or on a foreign passport that has a New Zealand citizen endorsement
• An Australian citizen travelling on an Australian passport
• A foreign passport holder with a valid visa for New Zealand - including a Permanent Resident visa

If you plan to visit New Zealand for a short period, you need to request a New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (opens in new window) (NZeTA) before you travel if you are:

• A citizen of a country which has a visa waiver (opens in new window) agreement with New Zealand (you can stay up to three months)

If you don’t meet the above, then you’ll need a visitor visa. The fastest and easiest way to apply for a visitor visa (opens in new window) is online.

Before travelling to New Zealand, you need to make sure your passport is valid for at least three months longer than your expected departure date.

Be sure to request your NZeTA (opens in new window) , or apply for your visitor visa well in advance of travel to avoid delays, and only use the official NZeTA website to request your New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority.

If you have a biometric ordinary passport (or electronic passport) and are over 12 years old, you may be able to use New Zealand Customs eGate service. This allows you to complete your Customs and Immigration checks faster so you can get on with enjoying your visit to New Zealand.

Essential travel information

Working holidays.

Working holiday visas (opens in new window) are available to young people, usually aged 18-30 (but 18-35 for a select few nationalities). They let you travel and work in New Zealand for up to 12 months, or 23 months if you’re from the UK. To apply you’ll need to meet the visa requirements, and have:

• A return ticket, or enough money to pay for one; and 
• Be coming mainly to holiday, with work being a secondary intention.

Arriving in Aotearoa New Zealand

Everyone entering New Zealand needs to complete a  New Zealand Traveller Declaration (NZTD) (opens in new window)  including babies and children.

It’s free and you can complete it on the NZTD website or by downloading the NZTD app ahead of your travel.

You can start your NZTD at a time that suits you. If arriving by plane, the earliest you can submit your declaration is 24 hours before you start your trip to New Zealand. An NZTD needs to be submitted by the time you reach New Zealand passport control.

If arriving by boat (including cruise ships), the earliest you can submit your NZTD is 24 hours before departing the vessel’s last foreign port prior to arriving in New Zealand.

It needs to be submitted by the time the vessel has berthed at its first port in New Zealand. ​

If you apply for a visa or NZeTA, you still need to complete an NZTD (opens in new window) .

Here's how to complete your declaration online. 

The form is available in English and Te Reo Māori, as well as simplified and traditional Chinese Mandarin. 

From April 2024, the form will be in 12 more languages: Hindi, Samoan, Fijian, French, German, Japanese, Korean, Malay, Tagalog, Tamil, Tongan, and Portuguese.

Paper NZTD forms will be available for travellers who cannot complete it online.

What you can bring into New Zealand

After you’ve cleared passport control, you should collect your baggage and proceed through customs and biosecurity checks. In order to protect New Zealand and its environment, certain items are not allowed to be brought into the country, have restrictions for entry or must be declared if they are deemed to present a biosecurity risk. These include food, plants, animal products and outdoor recreational equipment.

Your baggage may be sniffed by a detector dog and/or x-rayed, and it may be searched to identify any risk goods you might be carrying.

Allowances and duty free concessions

As a visitor to New Zealand you may be entitled to various concessions and duty free entries on some of your goods. How to apply for a Visitor Visa

New Zealand’s Visitor Visa is for travelers who want to come to the island nation as a tourist, to study a short course, or to visit family and friends for up to 3 months.

5 steps to travel to New Zealand from PH

New Zealand is like that beauty that we can’t touch.

But that dream might just be possible for us now as the island nation reopened its doors to Filipino travelers.

Ready your visa applications is what the New Zealand’s Ambassador to the Philippines Peter Kell means as he said that Wellington officially reopened to Filipinos last August 1.

We all know that visa applications add with travel requirement are complicated and hard enough so we have here 5 steps that might help you ease the journey.

1. Have a valid passport

Philippine passport validity should be:

• at least three months beyond the date you intend to depart New Zealand
• one month beyond the date you intend to depart New Zealand

2. Have your Visa stamp

Visa applications should be a priority right after getting your passport or for some who already have their passports, it is the first step. Just prepare and submit all the documents needed and be truthful in your application.

3. Check NZ Vaccination Requirement

Travelers will need a “ digital vaccine passport ” or another form of electronic or paper document from a government health authority as proof of your full vaccination

Persons that must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 to enter New Zealand are:

• Individuals who are aged 17 and over
• Persons who are not a New Zealand citizen
• Resident or Australian citizen who lives in New Zealand

Note: Children aged 16 years and under do not need to be vaccinated.

4. Get a Travel Insurance

It is for your own security and the country you are going to as well so better get that travel insurance. The New Zealand government also strongly encourages visitors to get travel insurance which is why it is also a condition for getting that visa.

5. Complete the NZ Traveler’s Declaration

The New Zealand Traveler Declaration must be completed. This declaration requires travelers to upload proof of vaccination status.

No-Visa Entry for 30-Day stay under Executive Order 408

NZ citizens who wish to stay more than 30 days in the Philippines and nationals of countries who are not extended the 30-day visa free privilege should apply for a visa before traveling to the Philippines.

NON-IMMIGRANT VISAS

9(a) Temporary Visitor’s Visa 9(b) Transit 9(c) Seaman 9(d) Treaty Traders 9(e) Foreign Government Official 9(f) Student 9(g) Pre-Arranged Employees

Of the above, the most frequently-applied for visa at the Embassy are the 9(a) Temporary Visitor’s Visa, 9(c) Seaman’s Visa, and the 9(e) Foreign Government Official Visa. For inquiries regarding the other non-immigrant visa types, applicants may call the Philippine Embassy. Applicants may check the Philippine Bureau of Immigration website to check if they need to apply for a visa.

Non-immigrant Visa - 9(a) Temporary Visitor’s Visa

REQUIREMENTS

Kindly send the duly accomplished form and other required documents via courier to the Philippine Embassy with address at 50 Hobson Street, Thorndon, Wellington 6011

• Duly-accomplished application from the  Philippine Online Visa Application System - visa.gov.ph (OVAS)  submitted in person; or by mail provided it has been notarized by a New Zealand notary public.
• Passport valid for at least six (6) months beyond the authorized period of stay in the Philippines
• Ticket or flight reservation (entry and exit); please do not book your ticket yet
• Proof of financial capacity OR letter of guarantee from the sponsor with proof of financial capacity
• Documents proving ties to the home country or country of residence such as employment certificate or property documents
• Hotel accommodation reservation or any proof of lodging
• valid New Zealand visa, if applicable
• New Zealand Police Conviction Check or Ministry of Justice Certificate from place of residence of applicant
• Passport-size photo taken within 3 months of application
• Prepaid courier bag with signature-required sticker
• Payment: Bank account details of the Embassy will be provided after assessment of documents submitted. Please refer to our  schedule of consular fees .

The Philippine Embassy assumes no responsibility for any delay or loss in the mail, or while the documents are in the custody of the courier service. The applicant should note the tracking numbers of all envelopes used and submitted.

• One (1) colored photo, passport size, taken within six months before the date of application, showing a clear front view of applicant’s face, with a 5. White background. No sleeveless attire. Blurred or low quality photos are not accepted.
• Letter from Shipping Company
• Prepaid signature courier bag
• Payment: Bank account details of the Embassy will be provided after assessment of documents submitted. Please refer to our consular fees ( https://www.philembassy.org.nz/consular/schedule-of-fees ).
• Personal checks and credit cards are not accepted.

Non-immigrant Visa - 9(e) Foreign Government Officials

Holders of diplomatic and official New Zealand passports who will be traveling to the Philippines on official business for a stay not exceeding 30 days no longer need to apply for a diplomatic or official visa with the Philippine Embassy. However, NZ government officials must possess passports that are valid for at least six months beyond the contemplated period of stay in the Philippines and a return ticket to the NZ or to their next country of destination.

• Duly-accomplished Non-Immigrant visa form, typed or printed legibly in black or blue ink, and notarized if sent by mail
• One (1) colored photo, passport size, taken within six months before the date of application, showing a clear front view of applicant’s face, with a white background. No sleeveless attire. Blurred or low quality photos are not accepted.
• Letter from NZ government agency requesting issuance of visa or Note Verbale from Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
• Visa fee - gratis

SEPCIAL NON-IMMIGRANT VISAS

Special Non-immigrant 47(a) (2) Visa

• Two copies of duly-accomplished Non Immigrant visa form, typed or printed legibly in black or blue ink, and notarized if sent by mail
• Four (4) colored photos, passport size, taken within six months before the date of application, showing a clear front view of applicant’s face, with a white background. No sleeveless attire. Blurred or low quality photos are not accepted.
• Letter from Foundation or Institute stating that the applicant is connected with such program, which is approved by the Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs
• Two (2) copies of the Medical Examination Report (FA Form No. 11) duly-accomplished by a licensed physician whose signature must be notarized, and which should not be more than six (6) months from date of application
• Chest X-ray (CD form)
• Certificate of No Police Record or Ministry of Justice Certificate from place of residence of applicant (original and one photocopy)
• Payment : Bank account details of the Embassy will be provided after assessment of documents submitted. Please refer to our consular fees ( https://www.philembassy.org.nz/consular/schedule-of-fees ).

IMMIGRANT VISAS

13(a) Visa 13(g) Visa

A non-quota immigrant visa may be granted to the spouse and unmarried children under 21 years of age of Philippine citizens (13a) and to former Filipinos who have already acquired foreign citizenships including their spouse and unmarried minor children (13g). 13a and 13g visa holders are eligible to apply for duty-free shipment to the Philippines. Processing time for 13a and g visas is two (2) weeks after complete submission of requirements.

Immigrant Visa - 13(a) Visa

• Send it by courier/mail
• Passport of applicant (valid at least 1 year from date of application).
• One (1) original and one (1) photocopy of the duly-accomplished Non-Quota or Quota visa form, typed or printed legibly in black or blue ink
• Four (4) identical colored photos, passport size, taken within six months before the date of application, showing a clear front view of applicant’s face, with a white background. No sleeveless attire. Blurred or low quality photos are not accepted.
• One (1) original and one (1) photocopy of documentary evidence to prove spouse's Philippine citizenship and to show applicant's relationship to the Philippine citizen, i.e., Philippine passport and marriage contract (original will be returned). NSO Marriage Certificate must be presented if Report of Marriage is not available.
• Medical Examination Report, duly-accomplished by a licensed physician, which should include his contact details, and which should not be more than six (6) months from date of application, together with laboratory reports (original and one photocopy).
• Chest X-ray, negative, standard size, or in CD (preferable)
• One (1) original and one (1) photocopy of evidence of sound financial status (e.g. proof of real property, investment/s, bank certification, pension, or notarized Affidavit of Support from a relative in the Philippines, with attached documents to substantiate declaration or claim)
• Personal appearance for interview

Immigrant Visa - 13(g) Visa

• Photocopy of Certificate of Naturalization (original to be presented)
• One (1) original and one (1) photocopy of documentary evidence to prove applicant’s former Philippine citizenship, as well as proof of legal relationship for foreign spouse and minor children, such as, birth certificate, Philippine passport, marriage contract (original will be returned)
• Medical Examination Report, duly-accomplished by a licensed physician, which should include his contact details, and which should not be more than six (6) months from date of application, together with laboratory reports (original and one photocopy)

Fee waivers

Thousands of foreign nurses a year leave UK to work abroad

Exclusive: Surge in nurses originally from outside the EU moving overseas prompts concern Britain is a ‘staging post’ in their careers

Almost 9,000 foreign nurses a year are leaving the UK to work abroad, amid a sudden surge in nurses quitting the already understaffed NHS for better-paid jobs elsewhere.

The rise in nurses originally from outside the EU moving to take up new posts abroad has prompted concerns that Britain is increasingly becoming “a staging post” in their careers.

The number of UK-registered nurses moving to other countries doubled in just one year between 2021-22 and 2022-23 to a record potential 12,400 and has soared fourfold since before the coronavirus pandemic.

Seven out of 10 of those leaving last year – 8,680 – qualified as a nurse somewhere other than the UK or EU, often in India or the Philippines. Many had worked in Britain for up to three years, according to research from the Health Foundation.

The vast majority of those quitting are heading to the US, New Zealand or Australia, where nurses are paid much more than in the UK – sometimes up to almost double.

Experts have voiced their alarm about the findings and said the NHS across the UK, already struggling with about 40,000 vacancies for nurses and hugely reliant on those coming from abroad, is increasingly losing out in the global recruitment race.

“It feels like the NHS is falling down the league table as a destination of choice for overseas nurses,” said Dame Anne Marie Rafferty, a professor of nursing studies at King’s College London.

“Worryingly, it feels as if the UK is perceived not as a high- but middle-income country in pay terms and as a staging post where nurses from overseas can acclimatise to western-type health systems in the search for better pay and conditions.”

Last year, 12,400 nurses working in the UK applied for a certificate of current professional status (CCPS), which they need to have to move to work in another country, the Health Foundation report shows. It is not clear exactly how many of these actually went ahead and left the country.

The largest increase among that group was in overseas-trained nurses who had only worked in the UK for three years or less. That pronounced trend in short stays suggests that for many recruits from abroad “the UK may be a stepping-stone prior to moving to other destinations”, the thinktank said.

It pointed out that OECD data showed that while a nurse in the UK earned on average $46,000 a year (£36,500) – “substantially less than in Australia ($71,000 or £56,350), New Zealand ($57,000 or £45,000) and the US ($84,900 or £67,000)”.

Application for a CCPS to work in America rose tenfold between 2021-22 and 2022-23 after a change in its visa policy meant many more foreign nurses were able to move there.

The Royal College of Nursing said the growing exodus of overseas-trained nurses was due to the significant erosion in pay the nursing profession has suffered since 2010.

Prof Pat Cullen, the RCN’s chief executive and general secretary, said: “It is deeply worrying to see more and more overseas nurses choosing to leave the UK. The recruitment of domestic nurses is collapsing and services are gripped by workforce shortages.

“With patient needs already going unmet, the prospect of losing more of our international colleagues doesn’t bear thinking about.

“The reality is that sustained attacks on pay and poor working conditions are leaving the UK’s healthcare services unable to compete on the world stage. International nurses, like all nurses, have every right to choose to work in countries that better value their skills and expertise. It’s no joke that nurse pay in the UK is joint bottom of 35 OECD countries.”

Report co-author Elaine Kelly, the assistant director at the Health Foundation’s research centre, said that, with an acute nursing shortage and so many overseas nurses quitting the UK, “if the NHS is to avoid becoming a stepping stone to careers elsewhere, it needs to be a more attractive place to work for all nurses, regardless of where they were trained”.

She said the brain drain was especially worrying because it cost the NHS about £10,000 to replace each foreign recruit who then moved elsewhere.

The Department of Health and Social Care said it did not recognise the Health Foundation’s figures. The latest Nursing and Midwifery Council data showed fewer nurses – those trained in the UK and outside it – leaving the NHS, a spokesperson said.

“We hugely value the care provided by our fantastic nurses, which is why we negotiated a fair and reasonable deal with the trade unions delivering a 5% pay rise, two additional one-off bonuses equivalent to 6% of pay and a series of non-pay measures to support the NHS workforce [in England].

“We also delivered on our commitment to recruit an additional 50,000 NHS nurses six months early, and the first ever long-term workforce plan – backed by over £2.4bn of government funding – will provide the biggest training expansion in NHS history, ensuring that up to 130,000 fewer staff, including nurses, will leave the NHS over the next 15 years.”
