Dinosaur Jr. is one of the most influential alternative rock bands to come out of the 80s. The band formed in Amherst, Massachusetts, US and created a style of noise rock that is instantly recognizable.

Singer/guitarist J Mascis formed Dinosaur Jr. in 1984 and enlisted bassist Lou Barlow and drummer Emmett Murphy III – aka Murph – to be in the band. J Mascis had previously known Lou Barlow from being in the hardcore punk band Deep Wound that they formed when they were in high school. The members of Dinosaur Jr. grew up listening to an eclectic style of music such as Black Sabbath, the Replacements, and Neil Young , which would have a huge impact on the band’s sound.

In 1985 Dinosaur Jr. released their debut album “Dinosaur” through Homestead Records. Although the album was not a commercial success, it conveyed the beginning of the band’s unique sound, which featured extreme use of distortion run through guitar and bass that were played at maximum volume. Their sound also combined the country-garage rock style of Neil Young with the sound of hardcore punk and sludge metal. After playing club shows in New York City to promote their debut album, the band caught the attention of Sonic Youth, who asked Dinosaur Jr. to join them on their tour.

In 1987 the band released their second album “You’re Living All Over Me”, which was recorded in New York with the help of Sonic Youth’s engineer Wharton Tiers. The album was released through SST Records, which was a record label founded by one of the band’s heroes, Greg Ginn from Black Flag. The album was mostly written by J Mascis and featured the signature sound of his distorted guitar shredding melodic riffs and solos. The album also contained the songs “Lose” and “Poledo”, which were written by Lou Barlow and were very similar to the style of music Barlow would write for his band Sebadoh. The album has been critically praised and is looked at by many publications as one of the most influential indie rock albums of all times.

Dinosaur Jr. released their third album “Bug” in 1988. The album contained the hit single “Freak Scene”, which was a major breakthrough for the band in the UK. The single reached the No. 4 position on the UK independent chart and the album reached the No. 1 position on the UK independent chart. “Freak Scene” has been looked at as milestone for indie rock and the music publication Pitchfork has called the song “indie rocks greatest guitar performance”. After the band toured for the “Bug” album, Barlow would part ways with the band and work full time on his band Sebadoh.

For the band’s fourth album they signed with the major label, Sire Records, and released their album “Green Mind” in 1991. “Green Mind” was basically a solo album by J Mascis, who recorded nearly every part of the album himself. The album conveyed a more polished sound as opposed to the band’s other albums and it contained the hit songs “The Wagon” and “Thumb”. In 1993 Dinosaur Jr. recorded their next album “Where You Been” as full band with Mike Johnson filling in on bass and Murph back on drums. The album was a success, charting on The Billboard 200 chart and containing the hit single “Start Choppin”. After “Where You Been” Murph would depart from the band, leaving J Mascis as the only original member. During this time J Mascis would release two more albums under the Dinosaur Jr. name. The 1994 album “Without a Sound” and the 1997 album “Hand It Over” both received commercial success. After the release of “Hand it Over” J Mascis retired the Dinosaur Jr. name and began touring and releasing albums under J Mascis + The Fog.

In 2005 all original members reformed Dinosaur Jr. and began playing live shows at festivals as well as making late night television show appearances. In 2007 the band released the album “Beyond”, which was Dinosaur Jr.’s first album since 1997 and the band’s first album with the original lineup since 1988. The band would continue to release albums after their reformation. In 2009 they released the album “Farm” and in 2012 they released “I Bet on Sky”, which were both received with critical praise.

The band is known for their intense performances that include heavy distortion and incredibly loud volumes. They have played numerous festivals as well as headlining shows. They have also toured with many notable bands like The Jesus and Mary Chain, My Bloody Valentine, Blur, and Nirvana. In fact Nirvana had once asked J Mascis to join their band as a guitarist.

Live reviews

Dinosaur Jr. is an indie rock band from Amherst, MA. Even though they are a well-established band, playing on and off for almost 30 years, they have consistently remained underground and out of the mainstream press, never compromising their ideals. As former punk kids who were vastly influential on the grunge scene, Dinosaur Jr. has always embraced DIY ethics and this is reflected in their stripped-down, straightforward stage show, which emphasizes volume and dynamics while eschewing fancy showmanship that detracts from the music.

They are known for performing interesting covers during their set, often covering artists as diverse as The Cure, Peter Frampton, and Deep Wound, the hardcore band the band’s two core members played in while in their teens. They play songs from throughout their career, often playing selections from fan favorite You’re Living All Over Me.

Their sound involves large shifts in dynamics, extended guitar jams, and somewhat cryptic lyrics delivered in a nasally tone, all elements that often cause the band to be compared to Neil Young’s electric Crazy Horse band. Dinosaur Jr. is one of the longest-running and most critically acclaimed American underground bands. Anyone with any interest in American post-punk, indie, and alternative music should see Dinosaur Jr. at least once. They might be older, but have not lost any of their power or drive.

Report as inappropriate

Massachuettes rockers Dinosaur Jr. were considered to be a band of total innovation during the 1980s as they merged traditional instrumental and vocal likened to the 1960s & 70s with feedback and distortion and this level of experimentation went onto inspire the alternative rock movement of the 1990s. As a band that so successfully crossed genres and decades, it is no wonder that the range of audience member in the venue this evening is of complete contrast. There are some who may have been around to buy the group's very first release, those who would have discovered them during the alt-rock 90s or those who would have found their records in the sub sequential decades.

No matter when the audience first heard the band's music, they are all equally enthusiastic as they step onto stage and tear into 'Bulbs Of Passion'. The lack of real commercial success means the band do not have hit singles, so they have obviously hand picked this setlist through the merit of each track. They make fantastic choices with 'Freak Scene' and 'The Lung' demonstrating their musical ability and the reason they have such a legacy to modern alternative.

"Hey, we got another tune for ya." Opened with Thumb, mind already blown. Of course played classics like The Wagon, Start Choppin', feel the Pain and Freak Scene. Encore of Just Like Heaven and then something I don't think I've ever seen them play. "Don't" from Bug. J just melted a few hundred faces on that one. Best guitar play I've ever seen and I've seen Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton and Pete Townshend and Eddie Van Halen. Dinosaur Jr forever!

Terrible show. Very disappointing. The sound quality was horrific. You couldn't either hear or understand any of the lyrics. It was all amps and distortion. I'm all for loud, but blend it so it sounds right! I love J's voice but didn't get to hear it. I've also never seen so many people mass exodus out of a concert. Seems many felt the same way. It's a real shame. Dinosaur Jr is a great band, but you'd never know it from this concert.

melanie-ward’s profile image

The concert in Stuttgart was not as I expected. I saw an excellent concert of Dinosaur Jr in Sao Paulo in 2010, but at this time the sound was way too loud and that made almost impossible to hear J. Mascis's voice. I like that Dino uses to play loud, but they exaggerated at this time, it was very unconfortble to stay next to the stage. The performances of Lou and Murph were excellent, but J looked like he was forced to be there.

leandro-mendes-olivo’s profile image

As you'd expect- really loud, searing guitar, tight rhythm section pumped it out last night.

For me the bass player was the one who 'made' the gig.. he put boundless energy into the show and sang his song (left /right) off new album.

Sadly / strangely the bands timing was badly out on one of the old hits..feel the pain? - however the songs from new album were really well represented and it was on the whole, a great gig.

josh-hills-2’s profile image

Last time I saw Dinosaur Jr and Primus together was Lollapalooza '93. It was really awesome to see these two bands sharing the stage once again. Other than J Mascis looking like the white wizard, not much has changed. They played just as well as they did then. Hope to see them in another 20 years!

abrader’s profile image

Such a good show spanning 30 plus years of Dinosaur Jr catalogue. Riffs and droning guitars from these pre-grunge alternative rock legends. New tunes merging seamlessly into the more established set. J Madrid and Lou Barlow sound as enthusiastic and wild as they ever did.

Dancinptery’s profile image

The whole Italian tour has been canceled because of bad health of John Mascis. No gig at all, so I am writing this only to let the staff know that Songkick lacks a way to update itself when gigs are deleted. Bye.

pugliamix’s profile image

Interesting sounds and great songs but REALLY REALLY LOUD. Nearly too loud for the venue.

But great guitar sounds and overall a good show...the venue was really small and the house was packed!

Great fan vibe.

Dinosaur Jr. return to Australia to celebrate 30 years of Where You Been

  • X (formerly Twitter)

The legendary Dinosaur Jr. will be back in Australia early next year for their first tour of the country in seven years.

Their return is always reason to celebrate, but news that they'll be here playing their classic 1993 album Where You Been in its entirety takes the excitement to a whole new level.

The record was released amid the post- Nevermind grunge explosion and is one of the most immediate and accessible albums in the band's extensive and excellent catalogue. It was lauded upon its release and it's still help in high regard today, with its searing guitars and sticky pop hooks.

Dinosaur Jr. remain one of the great live rock bands around. They're loud, they're no-nonsense, and they're the kind of band who will transport you into a whole new dimension if your let J Mascis' guitar work take over. If you've never seen them: you just have to do it.

Update:  The band will headline Geelong's Tent Pole festival . Geelong's Tent Pole festival has been cancelled, with promoters citing "the current economic climate coupled with the difficulties associated with establishing a new regional festival has made it impossible for us to proceed." ( More info here .)

Dinosaur Jr. will now kick off their tour with a second Melbourne show on Saturday 17 February before playing theatres in four capital cities through the back end of February.

Additionally, J. Mascis has lined up some some solo shows in Sydney and Brisbane. ( More info here ).

Catch Dinosaur Jr. playing the following shows. Tickets are on sale now.

Dinosaur Jr. Expand Australian Tour With Melbourne Headliner

By David James Young

Dinosaur Jr. have added a much-anticipated Melbourne headlining date to their 2024 Australian tour , belatedly celebrating the 30th anniversary of their 1993 classic Where You Been . The new show will take place on Friday February 16th at the Northcote Theatre, the night before the band ventures southwest to Geelong to headline the second-annual Tent Pole Festival .

Since the tour was first announced last October, several extensions and additions have been made to the band’s visit. Firstly, it was announced that self-described “unpleasant rock” Melbourne trio Stepmother would serve as the opening act for all Australian dates. Then, last month it was announced that the band’s frontman J Mascis would be playing an additional two solo shows across both Sydney and Melbourne to promote his upcoming 2024 solo album What Do We Do Now .

Dinosaur Jr. – ‘Out There’

A pre-sale for the new Melbourne show will take place from Monday morning (January 15) via Frontier Touring at 9am. A general sale will follow on Wednesday January 17th, also at 9am local time. The full rundown of the band’s tour, as well as Mascis’ solo shows, can be found below.

Frontier have also given an update that the band’s Sydney show, set to take place at the Enmore Theatre, is now sold out. The band’s Brisbane show at the Tivoli, meanwhile, is down to its final tickets at the time of writing. The Where You Been anniversary tour will mark the band’s first in seven years, having last been in Australia in early 2017 on the back of their 11th album Give A Glimpse of What Yer Not . Mascis returned for a solo tour in 2019, while bassist Lou Barlow ‘s own band Sebadoh toured in early 2020 before the pandemic hit.

The band, led by guitarist and vocalist J Mascis along with bass player and occasional vocalist Lou Barlow and drummer Murph, will perform shows in Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth throughout February 2023.

Dinosaur Jr.’s Where You Been Turns 30

Dinosaur Jr. released Where You Been in February 1993. It followed their breakout releases You’re Living All Over Me (1987) and Bug (1988). The trio will be performing Where You Been in full on the Australian tour. The band recently announced four consecutive shows at London venue The Garage , where they’ll be honouring the legacy of Where You Been this November.

Dinosaur Jr.’s J Mascis: ‘I’ve Definitely Got Some Good Memories Of Coming Down To Australia’

As noise-rock legends Dinosaur Jr. prepare for their Australian tour, celebrating the 30th anniversary of their classic 1993 album Where You Been, frontman J Mascis reflects on his uncompromising band’s moment in the mainstream.

More Dinosaur Jr

The early ‘90s was a strange time in the alternative realms. An unassuming Seattle punk trio had blown apart the existing rock’n’roll paradigm, and for one brief but glorious moment in time, bands who’d been slaving away in the margins for years were suddenly thrust into the spotlight.

Massachusetts-bred rock band Dinosaur Jr. were particularly close to the epicentre of this Nirvana -caused explosion. They’d become giants of the indie scene in the late ‘80s courtesy their trademark mix of fuzz, speed and psych-tinged noise, and had been a massive influence on Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain – to the the point that he twice asked his Dinosaur Jr. counterpart J Mascis to join his fledgling outfit).

But Mascis was content with Dinosaur Jr.’s own trajectory – they’d already joined the majors when they signed with Sire Records in 1990, years before the grunge tidal wave took effect – and he’d finally rectified the band’s internal divisions which had been plaguing him.

With the trio having existed in a state of turmoil for years, in 1989 founding bassist/vocalist Lou Barlow – who’d been at creative loggerheads with Mascis – was ejected from the band and, after a few false starts, eventually replaced by Mike Johnson (formerly of Oregon punks Snakepit ).

But when the time had come to record their major label debut Green Mind (1991), the band were still on the hunt for a bassist. This meant that Mascis played virtually everything on the record – founding drummer Murph only having input on a handful of tracks – although Mascis is quick to assert that the album was far from a solo vehicle.

“ Green Mind is different than a solo album because, you know, I wrote all the parts for Murph to play,” he explains. “When I'm just writing something in general, I won't think about what Murph can or can't play or anything like that. But if I'm writing it for Dino then I'm thinking about what he could play or what the band sounds like. So all these parts that had been in the songs are just there for Murph. He was just having trouble learning it, you know, in the time that we had.

Don't miss a beat with our FREE daily newsletter

“Back then you had to book the studios in advance and it kind of crept up on him, and we were like, ‘Murph, we're recording in like a week, and you only know like one song'. So I ended up having to play the drums – but I'm playing parts I wrote for Murph, so it's not like a record by [early-2000s solo band J Mascis &] The Fog or something where I just can play anything I want, because I know no one else is playing it. So that wasn't exactly a feeling of doing a solo album.”

Collaborative Phase

While Green Mind was well-received, it also had the effect of galvanising the new Dinosaur Jr. lineup. With Murph back behind the kit full-time and Johnson now well and truly in the fold, the sessions for follow-up Where You Been were far more collaborative as a whole, with everyone playing their own parts (and Johnson even getting to contribute some guitar solos).

“I think with Where You Been , Murph didn't want it to play out that way again, he was really psyched up not to be left off the record again,” Mascis smiles. “So he was in the studio a lot and was really well-prepared, and we had a bass player by then so it was a lot easier to play together. We were all psyched up to play so, yeah, it was definitely the most that we recorded together as a band, I guess.”

The results were some of the most catchy and accessible music of the entire Dinosaur Jr. canon, perfectly aligned with the new Nirvana-driven willingness for the mainstream to co-opt the underground in search of the ‘next big thing’.

Singles like Get Me , Start Choppin’ and Out There were flogged on the radio, and Where You Been started popping up on mainstream album charts – rising to #50 in the US, #10 in the UK and #45 in Australia – significant inroads for an alternative band, even at the time.

And while from the outside it seemed that the album’s slacker-country-rock majesty might have been partly due to finding Dinosaur Jr. in a creatively ambitious phase, the album’s instrumentation included not just a string section but also embellishments such as timpani and chimes. Mascis explains that it was more about having time to experiment.

“I guess all of those choices that we made in the studio were mainly just down to having time to just try out different stuff,” he reflects. “Though thinking back it seemed that with Mike in the band – and without Lou – you have different possibilities open up. We were maybe just free to try different options that we wouldn't have thought of maybe with Lou in the band or something.”

Looking Backwards

By 1995, they’d dropped the equally successful follow-up Without A Sound (1994), meaning that Dinosaur Jr.’s Australian tour that year was massive; in Brisbane their venue quickly sold out and was upgraded to the massive Festival Hall, and they sold out numerous smaller venues in each of the other capitals. The band were supported by the equally raucous Magic Dirt on the national run, as rock’n’roll well and truly ruled the roost.

However in the intervening years, the ongoing detente between Mascis and Barlow thawed, somewhat incredibly given the animosity at the time – so much so that in 2005, the original Dinosaur Jr. lineup reunited and has never looked back, playing together ever since and releasing five excellent albums in the process. Which means, of course, they’re now touring behind an album that Barlow didn’t play on – which brings its own share of complications.

“We just did a run of Where You Been shows in the UK and London, and it was kinda weird because we never even played half the songs live. So it was interesting to play them,” Mascis smiles. “And obviously with some of them Lou’s never played them at all . So it doesn't exactly feel like going back in time, it just feels like we’ve had some songs at our disposal that we've never played and now we’re trying to play them.

“I guess it feels more like a current thing to me then just because I've never played them before. But I’ve definitely got some good memories of coming down to Australia in the ‘90s. Those shows were pretty crazy. Although in another way it just kind of feels like we’ve been on one long tour, and now it’s like, ‘Oh, yeah, that was way, way back then and it feels like a different lifetime.’ Though we’re still doing the same thing now, so I dunno...”

On the impending Australian headlining shows, Dinosaur Jr. are being supported by Melbourne power-trio Stepmother , whose current frontman, Graham Clise , also plays guitar in Mascis’ stoner-metal side-project Witch .

“They just made this album [ Planet Brutalicon ] and I really like it,” Mascis says. “I'm glad that he's singing now because he's always had some bad singers. That's always been a problem for him, but now he’s finally figured out he could just sing and it sounds great. So I'm excited to see him. I've never seen Stepmother. One of their new songs was gonna be a Witch song but then he plays it a lot better than we played it, so it was good that he took it”.

Mascis is also looking forward to headlining the second instalment of the Tent Pole festival down in Geelong, hoping to catch up with some familiar faces amidst the frivolities (although he’s not expecting to find any new favourites).

“Yeah, I am looking forward to Tent Pole actually,” he admits. “I usually like festivals because it means that I get to see some of the bands I'd never get to see otherwise – and then, you know, it's fun hanging out with some people that you never usually see. Some of my funnest times are at festivals.

“I don’t know if I’ll get to discover anything new though. I’ve loved so much Aussie music over the years – bands like Died Pretty and The Birthday Party and Lime Spiders – a lot of stuff has been really important to me, but I don’t really actively look for new music anymore.

“I might stumble across stuff – there’s so much stuff coming in from everywhere that sometimes I'll listen to a band if someone recommends it – but there's so many records I already have that I never listen to. So I guess I'm not that active in trying to find bands or anything, but I do somehow keep finding new music I like.”

Solo Travels

And in terms of looking forwards instead of over his shoulder, the next cab off the rank for Mascis is his impending fifth solo album, What Do We Do Now, due to drop in February (on Nirvana’s erstwhile label Sub Pop Records). It’s perfect timing, too – he’s just added two solo shows in Sydney and Brisbane to his existing Dinosaur Jr. obligations in Australia.

“I have a solo album coming out, and we just released a video for the first single, Set Me Down ,” he offers. “I’m really stoked with the album, and the single I guess is doing pretty well on the radio over here – whatever that means these days. I guess it's my best radio song I've had for a while.

“It’s great to be able to balance having the band and the solo stuff, they’re not that different but it keeps me busy. Really it's fun for me to play drums and mix it up a bit, but it’s all just rock music at the end of the day”.
