‘Rogue Trip’ on Disney+: All the Info on National Geographic’s New Travel Show

National Geographic's Rogue Trip hosts Bob Woodruff and Mack Woodruff on boat

Where to Stream:

Disney+ is home to a whole lot of franchises—from Marvel to Star Wars to National Geographic. That’s partly why the title of the new Disney+ series Rogue Trip is kinda like an ink blot test for your interests. You hear the phrase “ Rogue Trip on Disney+” and you may picture a spinoff of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story . Or maybe you think Disney’s finally turning Rogue’s cross-country road trip with Iceman from mid-’90s X-Men comics into a limited series. As rad as those two ideas sound, neither is correct! Rogue Trip is something else entirely—but it’s equally adventures and totally real.

Rogue Trip is a new National Geographic travel series with a twist. But who are the hosts of Rogue Trip on Disney+? And which countries does Rogue Trip feature? And why is the show called Rogue Trip to begin with, aside from the obvious play on “road trip”? Here are your answers!

What is Rogue Trip on Disney+?

Rogue Trip is a six-episode travel docuseries that drops Bob Woodruff and his son Mack in some of the most unexpected—and most unexpectedly beautiful—locations on Earth. These aren’t the usual tourist destinations, like France or Spain or China. These are nations that have, for the most part, unfairly earned unfavorable reputations. They are, as the show puts it, roguish nations (hence, Rogue Trip ).

Who are the Rogue Trip hosts?

Rogue Trip is hosted by Bob Woodruff and his son Mack Woodruff. Bob Woodruff is most known for his career as a journalist with ABC News, where he’s been since 1996. He co-anchored ABC World News Tonight from 2005 to 2006, until he was critically injured in an explosion from an IED in Iraq. Woodruff was kept in a medically induced coma for 36 days, and his recovery process lasted the rest of 2006. He returned to ABC News in February 2007, and he launched the Bob Woodruff Foundation to help injured veterans and their families.

Woodruff co-hosts the show with his son Mack, who works as a freelance photographer all around the globe. You can see photos from his journeys through some of the locations featured in Rogue Trip on his personal website .

  • Follow Bob Woodruff on Instagram at @bobwoodruff
  • Follow Mack Woodruff on Instagram at @mackwoodruff

What are the Rogue Trip filming locations?

During the course of Season 1, Bob and Mack Woodruff travel to Ethiopia, Lebanon, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, Colombia, and Ukraine

Is there a trailer for Rogue Trip on Disney+?

You bet there is.

Rogue Trip arrives on Disney+ on Friday, July 24.

ABC News war correspondent and son Mack go on a different kind of road trip

Care to visit a skull-filled cave in Papua New Guinea, abseil down a waterfall in Columbia, or explore an underwater reef made of fighter jets in Lebanon? While that’s unlikely right now, what with pandemic-imposed travel restrictions and all, Disney Plus is bringing these far-flung locales to your living room with Rogue Trip. It's an exclusive six-part docuseries courtesy of National Geographic, starring ABC news journalist Bob Woodruff and his son, Mack. Join in the journey and watch Rogue Trip online today to be a part of their adventure.

Rogue Trip is available to watch via the Disney Plus streaming service from Friday, July 24. A subscription costs just $6.99/£5.99 a month and you'll save 15% if you sign up for a year's subscription

Although it’s targeted at a more grown-up audience than some of your usual Disney fare, it’s still very much family-friendly: full of thrilling encounters, jaw-dropping spectacles, and heartfelt sentiment – like The Goonies or Indiana Jones but in real life! ABC News war correspondent Bob Woodruff and his 28-year old son Mack traverse six countries – Columbia, Pakistan, and Ethiopia among them –  generally neglected by tourists or with a chequered national history. As well as exploring the past, though, our two guides look for the positives and to the future, resulting in a  nuanced perspective on these fascinating locations.

Among their exploits, Bob and Mack meet mysterious tribes, traverse majestic landscapes, befriend locals, and come face to face with wild animals – mischievous monkeys, crocodiles, and, in one episode, a ravenous hyena. It’s got plenty of aww-shucks sentiment, too, with the father-son bond central to the show: Mack admits that “my 10-year-old self would be pretty jealous of all the time I get to spend with you now.” Cue the waterworks! Or barf bag, depending on how you feel about these kind of things...

Episode 1 takes us to Columbia, where the intrepid duo’s itinerary is a thrill-seeker's dream: they wind through the Amazon Rainforest, clamber down a waterfall with former rebels, and horse ride with barefoot cowboys. If you find yourself hooked on this combination of fun, education, and exploration, then all six episodes are available to stream instantly.

Get wild without leaving home and watch Rogue Trip online today. All you need to do is follow our guide below - but the if you want to save some time, the key to it all is a great value Disney Plus subscription.

News Disney+

Bob and mack woodruff embark on a journey around the globe in disney+ original series “rogue trip”, complete six-part series from national geographic begins streaming july 24.

BURBANK, Calif. (June 18, 2020) – Taking viewers on a globetrotting adventure with ABC News Correspondent Bob Woodruff and his son Mack, the Disney+ original series “Rogue Trip” will premiere with all episodes available on Friday, July 24. The six-part show from National Geographic follows the two as they embark on an epic journey to some of the world’s most unexpected places – roguish nations and regions mostly known for conflict - and find themselves hiking, rappelling down waterfalls with former rebel fighters and diving and parasailing their way through some of the most gorgeous and surprising places in the planet.

“Rogue Trip” is a story about second chances and the undying bond between a father and son. As a former war correspondent who was severely injured by a roadside bomb while reporting in Iraq in 2006, Bob Woodruff did not want his kids to grow up fearful just because of what happened to him. Bob has seen, and lived, through the worst of what these places have to offer, and now he and Mack explore the best in them. Along the journey, viewers will share the raw, big-hearted moments when ‘going rogue’ together changes the Woodruffs’ perspective – not just in other people and places, but in their own relationship.

rogue trip series

Disney today announced that Rogue Trip — a "globetrotting adventure with ABC News Correspondent Bob Woodruff and his son, Mack" — will be available on Disney+ in its entirety starting July 24.

The six-part series sees the two traveling all over the world. Here's the gist from Disney:

"Rogue Trip" is a story about second chances and the undying bond between a father and son. Along the journey, viewers will share the raw, big-hearted moments when 'going rogue' together changes the Woodruffs' perspective – not just in other people and places, but in their own relationship.

"I couldn't be more excited to share this series with viewers around the world," Bob Woodruff said in the press release. "This is an adventure of a lifetime to be with Mack discovering together how every place on the planet has the power to surprise, amaze and inspire, despite its past."

The pair will visit Colombia, Paupua New Guinea, Ethiopia, Lebanaon and Ukraine. All episodes will be available on July 24.

Here are the descriptions of each episode:

  • COLOMBIA: Colombia's civil war has ended, opening up swaths of rainforest and savannah to travelers. Bob Woodruff and his son, Mack, tour the country's off-the-guidebook destinations -- rappelling down a waterfall with former rebels, riding the plains with barefoot cowboys, and feasting on grubs deep in the Amazon Rainforest.
  • PAPUA NEW GUINEA: Bob and Mack start their journey deep in the heart of Papua New Guinea along the banks of the mighty Sepik River where they learn the hunting and healing secrets of a mysterious tribe known as the Crocodile Men. Then they go out to sea to dive with a kaleidoscopic array of exotic marine life and explore mysterious skull caves on a secluded island.
  • ETHIOPIA: Ethiopia is a time capsule of a nation and a place Bob has always wanted to visit. On their journey through the Rift Valley, Bob and Mack explore traditions both old and new: diving into volcanic hot springs, training with elite marathoners, jamming in a Reggae drum circle and coming face to face with a hungry hyena.
  • PAKISTAN: The last time Bob visited Pakistan was to report on the war in neighboring Afghanistan. Twenty years later, he's back with his son Mack to see a different side of the country. Starting in Malala's hometown, they discover why Queen Elizabeth once called Swat "the Switzerland of the East" before heading towards a Silk Road kingdom along the world's highest paved road to meet a real prince.
  • LEBANON: Lebanon is the melting pot of the Arab world, a tiny country exploding with culture. Bob and Mack explore ancient Roman ruins, search for a hermit near a secluded Christian monastery, travel through Hezbollah territory, and visit an artificial reef in the Mediterranean Sea built using tanks and fighter jets.
  • UKRAINE: For the final leg of "Rogue Trip," a tired Bob and Mack are getting a much-needed pick-me-up -- Mack's younger sister, Cathryn, is joining the team. Cathryn is ready to shake things up as the family visits Ukraine, one of Europe's rarely explored gems. The Woodruffs look beyond the headlines and discover Ukraine is a big and beautiful country that has far more than its Soviet past.

National Geographic’s Rogue Trip Brings the Ultimate Father-Son Adventure to Disney+

By Beth Deitchman

As a war correspondent for ABC News, Bob Woodruff frequently reported from so-called “roguish” nations while these countries and their people were facing the worst of times, from civil unrest to civil wars. Now, on National Geographic’s new series Rogue Trip , debuting Friday, July 24, on Disney+, Bob is returning to these far-off locales, which are known mostly for conflict, to shine a lens on the best of what they have to offer: their natural beauty, their time-honored traditions, and especially, the people who are truly the heart of each region. Bob’s 29-year-old son, Mack, shares his father’s passion for travel and reporting, and their commitment to presenting a new perspective on these often misunderstood nations has resulted in a travel guide like you’ve never seen before, as well as the father-son trip of a lifetime.

rogue trip

The Woodruffs embarked on this extraordinary adventure in July of last year and spent about four consecutive months circling the globe. We caught up with them by phone this week, finding them right back where they started—home—where they’re staying safe and healthy, and dreaming of a trip to nearby New Jersey, let alone the other side of the world.

Bob and Mack’s Rogue Trip journey took them to remote corners of Colombia, Papua New Guinea, Ethiopia, Pakistan, Lebanon, and Ukraine, regions that most of us are unlikely to visit on our own. These extraordinary locales also invited a host of equally extraordinary experiences, and over the course of six episodes, viewers will see Bob and Mack hunt for crocodiles with their bare feet, rappel down a waterfall, and join what can only be described as a “turtle rodeo” on the open sea.

rogue trip

“This was not a typical vacation like we’ve taken,” Bob stresses, and Mack concurs. “If our family were to design a family trip, it would look nothing like this trip,” he says. “But if my dad and I were to design one together, it would look way more similar to what we did on Rogue Trip [than the usual Woodruff family vacation].”

For Bob, whose work as a journalist brought him to the regions featured in Rogue Trip , the show is an opportunity to tell more of each nation’s story than has previously been reported on network news. “My biggest fear is that the reporting about countries during crises could somehow make people think that the entire culture is dangerous, or the entire culture is inferior,” he shares, and he wanted each nation’s unique and “remarkable” people to be celebrated front and center. Bob notes that, overwhelmingly, the people they met in their travels take tremendous pride in their respective homelands. “And they don’t like having criticism from the outside or being imposed upon by a culture outside the country,” Bob says. “We went there to learn from them, not for them to learn from us.”

rogue trip

Mack believes there’s much to be gleaned about resilience from these often misjudged nations. “All of the countries that we went to have gone through some sort of war, conflict, or disaster, but they’ve all rebounded from that. They haven’t rebounded perfectly or fully and they’re always going to be a work in progress,” he says—much like any country is.

Of course, the entire Woodruff family understands resilience. In 2006, while reporting from Iraq, Bob was severely injured by a roadside bomb—an event with an impact that can be felt in Rogue Trip as well as in Bob and Mack’s relationship. During a break from the action, father and son discuss how unthinkable a journey such as this—and even a return to reporting—seemed in the aftermath of Bob’s traumatic brain injury, making it all the more special for both that they are now able to share this experience. “I love doing this right now, but I love doing this with you,” Bob says in the episode set in Papua New Guinea.

“The biggest thing is that Dad shouldn’t have lived through his accident, so any time that he can spend with me and any time that I can spend with him pretty much is bonus time at this point,” Mack tells us.

rogue trip

While Bob and Mack are inviting viewers to look at parts of the world in a new light, Rogue Trip has provided a natural opportunity to see new facets of each other, as well. Though Mack has grown up watching his father’s news reports on TV, the trip was the first time he was able to understand how much Bob brings to a story both before and after the cameras begin rolling. “Being able to observe his work ethic is something that I knew existed and had heard about from his friends and colleagues, but it’s a different thing altogether to witness it,” Mack shares.

rogue trip

“This is the first time in our lives that we have spent time together as colleagues more than really father and son, because we both love doing the same thing,” Bob says. “I wasn’t going to teach Mack anything and, more importantly, I think Mack was there to teach me more. He has a different approach to the world. He’s a different generation. He’s got views of the planet and it’s just great to be in a position where I’m the student to the teacher who is my own child. He’s 29 years old now—he’s not even my child anymore. He’s another guy.”

“Hopefully a little more special than that,” Mack laughs.

rogue trip

Fair warning: Watching Rogue Trip —either alone, or with one’s parental units or adult children—may just inspire you to start planning your own trip down roads less traveled. Right now, the Woodruffs are dreaming of colder climes—a Norway vacation is in Mack’s post-quarantine future, while Bob has just one continent left to cross off his list: Antarctica. Their advice to fellow world travelers looking to go off the beaten path—spoken like true reporters—is to do the research and talk to people who have already been to a destination. For Mack, it’s less about the distance covered than simply stepping outside of one’s comfort zone, and that’s what he hopes Rogue Trip inspires in people who watch. As hard as that can be, he stresses, “That’s where you really grow.”

'Rogue Trip': Bob Woodruff and son's travel series finds hope in the world

rogue trip series

Father and son are unmistakably father and son, although at 58, Bob Woodruff would unmistakably be the dad, while Mack, 29, the son.

Other than that: Same eyes, same eye brows, almost same voice. And to hear both speak in that voice, same passion for the great world beyond.

The Woodruffs appeared tother on a recent Zoom hookup to discuss "Rogue Trip," their new limited Disney+ series where both venture to places like New Guinea, Colombia and Ukraine. It's a hot day in Phase Three New York, where they find themselves presumably bound in by the same limited horizons as everyone else. That great world seems far away. (The series launches Friday, July 24)

Bob Woodruff still travels widely for ABC News as a correspondent while Mack is just back from Australia, where he was on an assignment for his photography and video production company.

Nevertheless, this is a lousy time to be afflicted with wanderlust. Back in 2005, when he was co-anchor of "World News Tonight" with Elizabeth Vargas, Woodruff was in the field more than in the studio, with reporting trips to Iran, Israel (twice) and Iraq in his first four weeks on the job. Part of that had to do with the nature of major league anchoring, but most of it with the nature of Woodruff. A wandering man then, he wanders still.

"Rogue" is both familiar and unique. We've all seen TV travelogues which are the most fundamental and foundational of genres. What's so unique here is that generational aspect. It's really about a father and son who share this epiphany by the end of each episode: There's hope for the world after all.

Bob Woodruff says they wrapped the series just before the pandemic hit but that "I wanted viewers to know that as a country, while we are in a very difficult time right now, that history shows that countries do come back from horrible moments, that there is hope, no matter what happens."

"Hope" might seem a contrivance for any travel series, but maybe not for this one, certainly not for this host. Bob Woodruff and his cameraman Doug Vogt were nearly killed when they were hit by an improvised explosive device riding with an Iraqi army unit on Jan. 29, 2006. Woodruff suffered a traumatic brain injury, then returned to ABC a little over a year later to anchor a documentary about veterans who suffer from such injuries. In 2006, Woodruff and his wife, Lee, launched the Bob Woodruff Foundation in support of "long-lasting positive outcomes for our nation’s wounded, ill, and injured veterans," per its mission statement. The Foundation's annual benefit, Stand up for Heroes, fills up Madison Square Garden every November (Woodruff says this November's show will stream online only.)

The six countries "Rogue" visits (which include Ethiopia, Pakistan, Lebanon) have been torn by war in their recent history but "we had this idea to go back to some of these countries where I've reported from and on mostly negative topics — war or environmental collapse — to see that they were not exactly what they seemed to be," says Woodruff.

"I wanted [viewers] to know that these countries are filled with beautiful places and remarkable people, and to show that they're not exactly the way they've been reported."

In the New Guinea episode, dad and son head up the Sepik River into one of the world's most remote regions. In Colombia, they hook up with former FARC (Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia) combatants who are trying to lure tourists to the country. Wherever they go, people are kind and generous, the scenery resplendent. The past troubles, euphemistically speaking, have vanished.

For Woodruff, travel has long been both a compulsion and obligation — a reporting life dedicated to the Mark Twain decree that "travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry and narrow-mindedness." After college he got into corporate law, hated that, then headed to China to teach. After learning Chinese, he became a translator for Dan Rather during the Tiananmen Square uprising, then suddenly a new world opened up for Woodruff — the whole world, in fact.

Joining ABC News in 1996, he later became a war correspondent, then anchor, and promptly fused both roles. His predecessor, Peter Jennings — -who died in 2005 — had as well early in his tenure, although not nearly to the same degree. Woodruff's compulsion to report led him to a dusty road outside Taji, about a dozen miles north of Baghdad.

The attack left Woodruff with a vestige of guilt because "there was the impression inside my house, with my family, that these are dangerous places and why would a father go to them? What's the attraction of doing that?"

A father of four, Woodruff says "I didn't want [my kids] to descend into fears" or "feel like I was a bad father because I did take these risks."

He says he also "wanted to show Mack that these places are fascinating and beautiful and that it's important to report on parts of the world that Americans don't know about. ['Rogue Trip'] wasn't necessarily a way to get rid of my guilt but for Mack to better understand the attraction."

Asked how his father's near-death affected him almost fifteen years ago, Mack says, "oh man, it's tough to know what I would have been like if it had never happened. It made me realize the reality of what my dad did on a day-to-day basis. You saw him on TV [before the attack] and thought 'everything's fine,' or that just because he's there in the middle of a war doesn't mean the war was actually going on there. "

His dad "has taught me that the human spirit is incredibly resilient. [He] came back from an accident that nearly killed him and that's given me the confidence to step out into the world and to not be intimidated. If anything, it made me want to see more of it."

THE DAY WOODRUFF'S LIFE CHANGED

Bob Woodruff hadn't been to Iraq in nearly two years but "I am a firm believer that to cover a story, you have to get out in the field and see it with your own eyes," he recalled in the memoir he wrote with his wife, Lee, "In An Instant."

By January, 2006, both story and field had changed dramatically.

In a few hours, President George W. Bush would tell the American people that the Iraqi military had begun the process of taking over the country's security. The "World News Tonight" co-anchor and his ABC News crew decided to see for themselves.

They were told the town of Taji was a "good model" — relatively safe, with a water filtration plant secured by Iraqi forces. They got an offer to ride there with an Iraqi armored column, although safety became a troubling questionmark after the bullet-riddled body of an informant was found by the side of the road.

The ABC News crew decided "it would have been rude" to cancel on them.

They got into an armored personnel carrier — an APC — then after a few minutes, realized something had gone wrong: The APC had moved to the head of the head of column, where journalists were not supposed to be. Woodruff and his cameraman, Doug Vogt, debated whether they should do the shot as planned, with both standing above the hatch.

Woodruff ducked back into the tank, then up again, then back down. When he popped up the next time, an IED in the road that had been packed with rocks exploded. A hundred of them, some marble-sized, hit the left side of his head. One rock punched a fist-sized hole in his back.

Woodruff fell back into the cabin, his head bouncing off the metal stanchions. "Omar," the translator, told Vinnie Malhotra, Woodruff's producer, to plug the gaping wound in his neck. A U.S. soldier, maybe 19, "calmly" told Malhotra to "just keep talking to him, keep the words coming …"

Those three — Malhotra, Omar, the unnamed teenage soldier — likely saved Woodruff's life in those early, critical minutes.

I asked Woodruff how the attack changed him: "It always takes a lot of time to finally reroute yourself, to find a different path [but] nobody ever thought I'd be alive right in those first few hours, nobody thought I'd be able to sound like this again, not be able to return to work. In some ways, it was a great gift to go through this [recovery] and find another way to be able to travel the world and do stories."

He smiles: And to do them with his son. — VERNE GAY

ABC News' Bob Woodruff travels across globe with son as part of 'Rogue Trip' on Disney+

WLS logo

ABC News correspondent Bob Woodruff went on a globetrotting adventure with his son. It's all captured in "Rogue Trip," which is now streaming on Disney+.

"Rogue Trip" is a six-part series from National Geographic, and it's available on Disney+ starting Friday.

Woodruff, a former war correspondent, and his son Mack travel to countries mostly known for their histories of conflict.

"It's about going to countries that have been defined by wars or conflicts in the past, and they've sort of been depicted as these dangerous countries. And we went back, and my dad has been reporting from them for a really long time, but we wanted to go there and show them with a little bit more balance and show the beautiful places and people that these countries have to offer, just like our own," Mack Woodruff said.

The father-son duo traveled to Colombia, Ethiopia, Lebanon, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea and Ukraine.

"You see places that you don't think about having gigantic, beautiful mountains," Bob Woodruff said. "You see places with stunning water and seas, and you're going to see people that you didn't really know about much before. So it's opening your eyes to part of the world that used to be at war or in conflict."

Disney is the parent company of ABC.

TV Review: “Rogue Trip” (Disney+)

rogue trip series

Disney is known for producing entertainment for the whole family, National Geographic  brings expeditions into your home, and ABC News  makes the world feel more connected. In a way, the new Disney+  original series Rogue Trip  blends the unique qualities of all three brands into one series. ABC New correspondent Bob Woodruff and his son go on a National Geographic trip to exotic locations in a family-friendly series that will widen your world.

If you aren’t already familiar with Bob Woodruff’s story, the series will recap it for you in the premiere episode. The ABC News correspondent traveled the world, putting himself in treacherous situations to bring stories from across the globe into American living rooms. A landmine encounter in Iraq in 2006 left the journalist with severe head injuries and a long road to recovery. As the journalist shares in the prologue, he had to rely on his kids to help him learn to speak and walk again.

rogue trip series

Bob Woodruff’s fellow adventurer is one of his four kids, his 28-year-old son Mack. The most heartwarming moments in the series come from their bonding as adults. As Bob shares repeatedly, he’s not the same person who raise his son and Mack will often talk about seeing his father on TV in some of the exotic and remote places they travel to in the series.

Being a National Geographic series, each episode brings Bob and Mack to a part of the world they can explore together. They’re diving in head first, learning as much of the culture as they can, living among the people, and meeting the wildlife. It’s also a look at the challenges the people in these areas have endured and the trials that await them in the future. The common theme that emerges over and over is industry and greed putting ways of life and entire species at risk.

rogue trip series

From exploring remote regions of Colombia that recently opened up to tourists after years of war to a cannibal skull cave in Papua New Guinea, father-and-son Bob and Mack Woodruff are on the trip of a lifetime and you’re invited to join them. With the world more-or-less closed for travel, Rogue Trip   offers a way for families to have a safe staycation at home while also enjoying a condensed Adventures by Disney-style trip with another family, the Woodruffs. Join them as they visit the “Most beautiful, surprising, and coolest places on the planet.”

I give Rogue Trip  4 out of 5 stylish neck gaiters.

All six episodes of Rogue Trip  premiere Friday, July 24, only on Disney+ .

Virtually Tour the World With Bob Woodruff and His Son on Disney Plus

Abc reporter travels to conflict-troubled countries in 'rogue trip'.

Gayle Jo Carter,

Mack and Bob Woodruff riding horses in Eastern Columbia

When ABC News correspondent Bob Woodruff was globetrotting with his son, Mack, 29, he couldn't imagine that their new series Rogue Trip (July 24, Disney Plus) would debut in the middle of a pandemic . But their travelogue about conflict-troubled locations — Colombia, Ethiopia, Lebanon, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea and Ukraine — provides homebound viewers a virtual world tour, and a chance to see how countries cope with challenging times. In these times, we need this show.

Many Americans are feeling fatigued by forced togetherness. On your trip, how did you and Mack make it work?

It was the first time in my life where I was able to spend hours every single day for almost four straight months with Mack. Stuck in the car for long periods, we had plenty of fights. It introduced us to a whole new technique of getting along with each other. He would get up very early in the morning, to get away from me. He would wander off as much as he could — Mack's true love is photography and digging up pieces of information that he never knew about before.

In 2006, a roadside bomb in Iraq gave you a life-threatening brain injury; you spent 13 months recovering. Why did you go back to some of the places you'd been in more dangerous times?

It was crucial for me to show Mack [and his daughter Cathryn, who joined them in Ukraine] some of these countries where they had seen me, but always in conflict. Every time we've covered wars, we know that somewhere in these countries were amazing people in many ways similar to us. We've seen images of these countries buried in these very intense news stories. In journalism we've always covered the negative — the negative is the tiny minority.

Were your kids afraid because of what happened to you?

I think a wake-up to the danger was when I was actually hit . When I was covering wars, I would not tell them details if there were confrontations, potentially dangerous. They didn't see a ton of that danger.

Bob and Mack Woodruff watch a traditional archery competition in Papua New Guinea with the village children

Was this a trip Mack wanted to take after all you went through?

Mack is in some ways similar to me. I'm not sure I like to use the word “risk taker,” but Mack seems very comfortable going to places that have potential danger. He'd read about the dangers of these areas or watched it on TV, but this is the first time he went to see them live. Just outside Beirut, a drone was dropped on a Hezbollah office, and so I, of course, wanted to go down and see it. Mack peeled away to see a different part of Beirut. I don't think it was because he was afraid. I think in some ways he doesn't want to do what his father does. War correspondents/reporters want to see the conflict, other people go to rogue nations because they want to see something that is very different from their own country.

Then you came back to find our own country living through another type of terror. Is there a comparison to make with the places you saw?

Right now our country is going through a moment of fear and violence. This is the first time since 9/11 that we've been attacked. In the past, I always went off to some other country and I was the one taking the risk. If anybody was going to get hurt or killed, it would have been me. Now when we take risks to try to cover this story, it's going to be someone else at risk. [The pandemic] is the most frightening war I have ever covered. We could come back and be carrying the bomb [ the virus ] with us, and injure or kill one of our own family members.

What did you learn in going back to these places?

When you watch this series, you'll have a chance to see these countries in happy times. It will give a break from all this horrible news that's happening. Half of these countries, I'd been there during wars. One of the things we experienced is that these countries recover. When you go to a war zone, there's all this fear that they'll never return to normal, that the suffering will continue unendingly. But when you go back, you realize these countries can get better, and eventually tourists will return. That's the hope. I wanted to show my kids that countries can come back.

Bob Woodruff holds a monkey in the Amazon of Columbia

What's your favorite return destination?

I really loved going back to Pakistan. Usually you think about the war in Afghanistan right next door. I rushed off to Pakistan to get into Afghanistan to cover the war after 9/11. Going back to this gorgeous country of mountains, the Old Karakoram Road and K2, the second-highest peak in the world, you realize these countries are so beautiful; there are parts of them you never see when covering the war. You can see a lot of old history. I loved going to Ethiopia, which was new to me. Lebanon, too, is one that's been nothing but conflict there, and now you can see it as fascinating but also beautiful.

What was the most difficult part of journey?

Papua New Guinea, traveling up and down the Sepik River — that was exhausting. Colombia in the Amazon. The Amazon was filled with bugs and mosquitoes all the time. Part of that country you were never really able to access before, but now you can since some of these conflicts have settled down.

After all this travel for your work, do you still have a bucket list of places to see?

I'd like to go to Antarctica. I've been to about 130 countries, so I'm trying to figure out the ones I hadn't been to. Certainly more of Africa. It may be awhile until we're able to travel again.

As we watch your journey, are you thinking about our country's future? What is next for us when we go back to normal?

I think this will eventually go back [to normal], which is kind of what I'm trying to tell in the series. All these places that go through horrific times in history will change and go back to some new normal. In the United States, the generations before us suffered way more than us and look at what happened to our country. I like to be positive. I always, as my wife says, see the cup as half full, not half empty.

National Geographic streaming series Rogue Trip hosted by journalist injured by roadside bomb

rogue trip series

In 2006, Bob Woodruff was severely injured by a roadside bomb while reporting on the war in Iraq for ABC. He suffered life-threatening injuries as shrapnel and other debris from the explosion lodged in his brain, causing him to spend 36 days in a medically-induced coma.

“It's been a long recovery; it’s been more than 14 years now and for me and my family there's always been hope," said Woodruff, a longtime Rye resident who raised four children in the village with his wife, author Lee Woodruff.

What never waned was Woodruff's interest in exploring countries around the globe. He also wanted his kids not to grow up fearful just because of what happened to him.

Woodruff has combined both goals by hosting a new National Geographic series with his 29-year-old son, Mack.

IS IT PLEASANT? New British series is streaming in the U.S.

The father-son duo are featured on Rogue Trip , a series that is streaming on Disney+. Over the course of the six-part series, the duo travels to six countries including Colombia, Papua New Guinea, Ethiopia, Pakistan, Lebanon and the Ukraine.

"Rogue Trip," which premiered two weeks ago, was shot over four months starting in July 2019.

After years of covering wars and environmental issues for ABC, Woodruff said the series offered him a chance to change peoples’ perspective on regions or countries not generally found on a tourist’s list.

“Nothing ever gets back to the way it was before. And sometimes things can be better than they were before,” said Woodruff. “Life can get better and countries that I reported on can do the same.”

For Mack, a professional photographer and an aspiring on-camera journalist, the series offered a chance to learn from the best.

“The ins and outs of interviewing someone and how to ask the right questions and to be an active listener and all those skills were developed as I went on,” he said.

“I was also feeling a little bit less intimidated by the idea of going up to strangers and asking them questions. But then the more I did it, the more comfortable I was and realized that they're just as curious about you as you are about them. So that became pretty natural a few weeks into the project.”

Among the adventures featured in the series: The duo explored the drainage tunnel system underneath Kiev, Ukraine, to find abandoned nuclear bunkers from the Cold War era and experienced a turtle rodeo in Papua New Guinea.

“We were chasing these sea turtles on a small boat. Once they get tired out, you can jump right onto their back and pull them out of the water. We were doing it so that we could tag them for science, but it was also something that I didn't know was possible,” said Mack Woodrfuff, who spent the last two years living in Sydney, Australia.

“So it was a really cool experience to be helping these marine biologists, but also having the time of your life while doing it.”

As a photographer and a journalist, the duo often gravitate toward different things.

“I was drawn to the beautiful scenery or the cinematic light that was hitting people's faces and taking portraits of things and people; he was more interested in getting information from people and trying to find out what their stories are, who they are, where they're from, what they do, why they do it,” said Mack Woodruff, whose photography and video clips have made it into the series. “I think we compromised a little bit.”

For Bob Woodruff, 59, curiosity about the world is what led to his journalism career.

After obtaining a law degree from the University of Michigan, Woodruff said he was fascinated by the changes taking place in China in the late 80s. He moved to China in the first year of his marriage to study Mandarin and teach law in Beijing.

CBS News hired him as an on-screen interpreter during the Tiananmen Square protests of 1989. Woodruff was 30 years old; it was the start of his career as a journalist. Since 2015, he has been ABC's primary correspondent throughout Asia.

He said having the chance to bond with his son was one of the highlights of doing the Nat Geo series.

"Parents have a chance to spend a lot of time with their kids until they reach adolescence and then they kind of disappear for a long period of time," Bob Woodruff said. "And then they come back and they're not living with you anymore and you have great Thanksgiving dinners, but you don't get a chance to go and spend four straight months with your child again, to be at the center of your life. So it was amazing."

While both father and son had a hard time picking their favorite out of the six countries, Pakistan seems to have clearly made a special impression.

“My dad spent a lot of time there after 9/11. And so, a lot of the news that he reported from that country was about a place that was harboring terrorists, Taliban and such,” said Mack. “So I expected a somewhat dangerous place. What I saw was pretty much the opposite. It was incredibly generous people with incredible food and the most stunning, jagged mountains I've ever seen in my entire life.”

Rogue Trip – “Colombia” Episode 1 Disney+ Review

rogue trip series

National Geographic’s latest Disney+ Exclusive show is “Rogue Trip”, which is a travel show, where ABC News correspondent Bob Woodruff and his 28-year-old son, Mack Woodruff, travel to places that the average tourist would be least likely to venture.  These roguish nations, territories and regions are often misunderstood and frequently overlooked, but each possessing a unique power to surprise, amaze and inspire.

The first episode sees the father and son team head to Eastern Colombia, where they learn more about illegal drugs, the locals and get close up with the wildlife, including some very cheeky monkeys, ant-eaters and much more.

rogue trip series

I’ll be honest, being a Brit, we don’t have access to ABC News, so I’m completely unaware of who Bob Woodruff is.  But the introduction to the series helps set up who he is and gives some insight into a tragic event, where he was involved in an exploding bomb accident in Iraq.  Bob did not want his kids to grow up fearful just because of what happened to him, so this trip is much more than just a job, its about spending time with his son, Mack.  And that’s one of the coolest things about this episode, the relationship between the two can be seen to grow, as they spend more time together and Mark gets to see his Dad at work.

I’m someone who loves to travel, and I’ve been to many countries off the beaten track, the concept of this show instantly appealed to me.  I love travel documentaries, and this is a show I would have watched on any network or streaming channel.  This episode didn’t disappoint, it had everything I would want from a travel “vlog”, it has some stunning scenery, some fun moments (I was literally laughing out loud when the Monkeys started stealing their equipment!) and also some more hard-hitting content, though the tone is generally light and doesn’t go into too much detail about the unsavoury nature of drug trafficking.

It took a while for me to warm up for the father and son duo, Mack seemed a little more out of his comfort zone at the beginning of the episode, but slowly he started to become a little more natural.  This series took five months to film, and it looks to be Mack’s first time in front of the camera, as he is a professional photographer, so I’m expecting him to be much more relaxed later on in the series.  While Bob didn’t take too long to get straight into the action, you could just tell he is an experienced traveller and knows how to put people at ease, while also getting information out of them.

rogue trip series

The whole dynamic of a father and son team travelling the globe together is very interesting to me, and this episode certainly didn’t disappoint.  “Rogue Trip” gets the series off on the right foot and it’s great to see a “grown-up” Disney+ Exclusive series, and I can’t wait to watch the rest of the season when it arrives on Disney+ on Friday, July 24th.

A familiar American goes to Italy to live his best life in the bloody Netflix series ‘Ripley’

Over the years, the iconic criminal character of Tom Ripley has been played by Matt Damon, John Malkovich, Ian Hart and Dennis Hopper. Now, Irish actor Andrew Scott gets a turn in the Netflix limited-series “Ripley,” opposite Dakota Fanning and Johnny Flynn. (April 3)

rogue trip series

NEW YORK (AP) — It’s time to take another trip to Italy, to the charming, cobblestoned streets of the Amalfi Coast, sipping coffee at cafes and looking for the la dolce vita. And it just wouldn’t be fun without our favorite serial killer, right?

Tom Ripley is back for another turn at wearing dressing gowns and having Champagne on the terrace in “Ripley,” a thrilling new Netflix series based on the enduring character created by novelist Patricia Highsmith in “The Talented Mr. Ripley.” It premieres April 4.

“The idea that we know we’re not supposed to like him, but we do want to see him get away with it is very interesting. What’s it say about us?” asks Steven Zaillian, who created, directed and wrote the eight-episode adaptation.

Andrew Scott steps up to play Ripley, a scrappy check fraudster in grimy New York who is hired to locate a rich dilettante in Italy, but kills him and then impersonates him, leading to more murders and scams.

“Like with any sort of iconic literary character like that, people have very strong opinions — he’s a psychopath, he’s a serial killer,” says Scott. “Part of the challenge was how do you make an audience feel like what it’s like to be Tom Ripley, rather than what is usually done, which is to want to feel like to be a victim of Tom Ripley.”

This image released by Universal Pictures shows Dev Patel on the set of "Monkey Man." (Akhirwan Nurhaidir/Universal Pictures via AP)

The eight-hour canvas allows viewers time to watch him figure out how to get out of jams in real time, like a murder he commits in his apartment in the fifth episode. He needs to find the victim’s car, clean up the crime scene, move the body and make it all seem like an alcohol-induced accident.

“I think because we sort of see every little step of how he figures things out and does things that we take part in them,” says Zaillian. “He often doesn’t know what he should do next, and neither do we. And so we become part of the process in that way.”

Andrew Scott poses for a portrait to promote the television miniseries "Ripley" on Tuesday, March 26, 2024, in New York. (Photo by Taylor Jewell/Invision/AP)

Scott, known for his stage work, the Emmy-winning “Fleabag” and recent film “All of Us Strangers,” says it may take some viewers raised on TikTok a little while to adjust to a more sedate, deliberate storytelling pace — one in which characters climb staircases, look at waves and make small talk. There is time to watch where an ashtray is bought before it’s later used to bludgeon someone to death.

“You have to teach the audience how to watch it to a certain degree,” he says. “There’s certain times the pacing is really quite fast and there’s certain times where you think this would take time and you have to stay with the agony and the thrill and the tension when things aren’t going right. That’s the way life is.”

Zaillian, an Oscar winner for the screenplay of “Schindler’s List,” refused a suggestion to update Highsmith’s book series and is careful to keep everything very early 1960s, even filming it all in black and white, like “Schindler’s List.”

This image released by Netflix shows Andrew Scott as Tom Ripley in a scene from "Ripley." (Netflix via AP)

“It puts us in that time period effortlessly and immediately. But more than that, I did not want what I would call a color postcard sort of Italy for this story, with sunny blue skies and lots of colorful outfits. That was not something I saw in my mind when I read the book and not something that I wanted to do in the show,” he says.

If other TV shows are dialogue-driven, “Ripley” is more interested in the spaces between dialogue. It’s all about suspicious looks, wary interactions and putting on a brave face with police inspectors and hotel clerks.

“I was so excited by getting to communicate so much with micro-movements in the face and a look — that thing where you can read someone’s thoughts through their eyes,” says Dakota Fanning, who plays the suspicious girlfriend of the rich dilettante Dickie Greenleaf.

Zaillian is faithful to Highsmith’s novels but adds some of himself into the series, like making Ripley a fan of Italian painter Caravaggio, who worked with intense and unsettling realism and was also a killer.

“I found as I was writing it there’s actually a connection between him and Caravaggio. They were both these sort of rascals and both ended up killing somebody. So it sort of grew from a personal moment that I had into a motif and then kind of into an aspect of his character,” he says.

Like Caravaggio, the series is grounded in realism, from the rusty showerheads and the gritty, screeching subways of New York to the crumbling walls and pigeon poop-streaked statues in Italy. Cleaning up blood takes what seems like hours.

Ripley, who over the years has been portrayed by, among others, Matt Damon, John Malkovich, Ian Hart and Dennis Hopper, is played understated by Scott as a killer who makes mistakes, improvises and must double back to correct errors.

Johnny Flynn poses for a portrait to promote the television miniseries "Ripley" on Tuesday, March 26, 2024, in New York. (Photo by Taylor Jewell/Invision/AP)

Zaillian thought of Scott for the role very early in the casting process, aware of his work in “Fleabag” and as Moriarty on the BBC series “Sherlock.” He was smitten.

“I just found him really sort of watchable,” Zaillian says. “I knew that since we spend so much time with somebody alone — there’s a lot of scenes where it’s just us and him — that he has to be watchable. We have to be able to see him think and express himself in a way that lets us know what he’s thinking. And I found that Andrew was able to do that.”

Johnny Flynn, who plays the golden boy Greenleaf, says filming in Italy took him to some of the most beautiful places on the planet but ones that got darker as the summer tourists left and the sun got lower, perfect for a noirish vibe. He and the cast were also reminded that many small Italian towns built on cliffs have many, many steps.

“We were just out of breath all the time,” he says, laughing.

Which is what can be said for lots of people who meet Ripley.

Chrissy Teigen and her family are taking in the sights in Thailand.

The author and model, 38, traveled with her husband John Legend and their four children to visit her mother Vilailuck "Pepper" Teigen over spring break. Pepper moved back to Thailand earlier this year to live in her childhood hometown, Korat.

“my family!,” Teigen's caption read on Tuesday as she shared a snap of herself carrying daughter Esti Maxine , 16 months, while stepping into a tuk-tuk.

Legend, 45, also sat inside the tuk-tuk next to their eldest daughter Luna Simone , 7, and their son Miles Theodore , 5.

In the second photo, Teigen sat on a swinging chair with Luna, son Wren Alexander , 9 months, and Miles, while her smiling husband stood alongside them holding Esti.

Flashing beaming smiles again, the third slide featured Pepper as she posed beside her daughter and grandchildren Miles and Luna.

Meanwhile, the family of six was pictured on their tuk-tuk ride in the fourth photo, which was followed by a smiling selfie of Luna resting her head on Legend's shoulder as baby Wren snoozed in his father’s arms.

The post concluded with Teigen and Legend gathering for a large group photo with their children and other loved ones.

On Sunday, Teigen celebrated her family making it to Thailand after a long flight.

"Family of 6 made it to Thailand to visit yai!,” her caption read as she referenced her mother. “pearl the basset hound painting coming along swimmingly, babies did such a good job, miles is basically delirious and luna toons is thriving. anyhow more importantly: what’s your favorite cowboy carter song today? mine is the one with Miley of course. and blackbird 🖤🖤🖤.”

In the post, Wren slept in his mom's arms, as well as enjoying some fun in a colorful play area. Esti also played in a playroom, while Miles took a selfie with his dad from their airplane seats.

Meanwhile, Luna also took a snap with her mother on the flight and gave two thumbs up to the camera, while Teigen flashed the peace sign.

Terrible trip says Detroit Red Wings probably aren't ready for Stanley Cup playoffs

rogue trip series

Someday, the Detroit Red Wings will make the playoffs again. And someday, when the Wings do get there, they will make some noise and win a series.

But if we learned anything from their tough five-game trip that bordered on disastrous, it’s that the Wings still lack enough of the elite skill and toughness to sneak into the playoffs for the first time since 2016 — and then beat a top seed once they get there.

At the very least, they’re getting closer to being a legitimate playoff team. They’re playing consistent, disciplined hockey under Derek Lalonde. They’re careful with the puck at both ends, calculated on offense and boast a top-10 power play.

But a measly four points out of a possible 10 , with two losses coming via shutout, isn’t the kind of inspiring late-season charge anyone wants to see from a team on the playoff bubble.

It wasn’t all bad. The Wings at least closed the trip strong with a 4-2 win over the red-hot Tampa Bay Lightning on Monday. That gave them 82 points with seven games remaining and left them just outside the second wild-card spot behind the Washington Capitals, based on points percentage.

“Our guys have been battling,” Lalonde told reporters in Tampa. “This is an unbelievably difficult road trip. You’re talking at Carolina, you're talking at Florida, at Tampa.

“Pointed in three of our last four on the road. We haven’t been finding a way to get two full points on the road but our guys are battling and tonight was perfect. Just really proud of the group.”

Lalonde is a smart coach. He knows what to say and how to prepare his team. But he also knows a .400 points percentage is awful, especially at this time of year. And I’m sure he was wise enough to thoroughly prepare the Wings for the Lightning’s top-ranked power play — then probably had to keep himself from biting through the closest hockey stick when the Wings took two first-period penalties, though they killed both.

Can the Wings still make the playoffs? Sure they can. The final wild-card spot in the East will probably come down to a battle royale between them, the Flyers and Caps. The Flyers and Caps play each other in the season finale at Philadelphia, so one might knock out the other.

The Wings get to finish with two games against miserable Montreal. So they might have a slight advantage in the schedule, though the Flyers have the easiest schedule over their final six games.

That means we might be looking at a hugely decisive game against the Caps on Tuesday at Little Caesars Arena. The Caps would have just four games left after that and the Wings would have five left.

I’ve applauded general manager Steve Yzerman for keeping the team intact at the trade deadline this season. Because that’s the first step in him considering the Wings a playoff team instead of an annual yard sale for the NHL’s power brokers to pick through like rich neighbors offering you pennies for those pricey P90X videos you never opened.

Yzerman’s inaction is a start, but it still falls short of the next and most important step: Adding key pieces that help a team not only reach the playoffs but also win series.

[ MUST LISTEN: Make "Carlos and Shawn" your go-to Detroit sports podcast, available anywhere you listen to podcasts ( Apple , Spotify ) ]

I don’t know how Yzerman truly views this roster’s potential for playoff success. It’s clear there’s talent and he deserves credit for adding Patrick Kane, Alex DeBrincat and Alex Lyon to complement core players.

But the 3-2 shootout loss to the Panthers, who are vying for the Presidents Trophy, told us — and maybe Yzerman — a lot about the Wings.

The Panthers got lucky on their two regulation goals. But they played a generally poor game, taking eight penalties, including one in overtime, and still beat the Wings by playing the kind of brutish, bullying hockey that would make the Hanson brothers proud. And when they needed the kind of stick-handling wizardry that would have made Pavel Datsyuk proud, they got it in the shootout.

I don’t expect the Wings to be the Panthers at this point. But if the Wings want to make the playoffs someday, and do something when they get there, they’re going to need exactly what the Panthers have: hands of stone in the corners and nimble fingers around the net.

A familiar American goes to Italy to live his best life in the bloody Netflix series 'Ripley'

NEW YORK — It’s time to take another trip to Italy, to the charming, cobblestoned streets of the Amalfi Coast, sipping coffee at cafes and looking for the la dolce vita.
