Jobs in Austria

Austria is one of the richest countries in the world. The economy has regained its strength after the global economic crisis that crippled so much of Europe. The workforce is regarded as efficient and the people are known as extremely ethical making for an excellent work environment. The country is highly industrial yet stunningly beautiful; the jaw dropping natural scenery of the Austrian Alps and musical culture offer plenty to do on your off days and create a thriving tourism industry. Whether you work in Austria in well known cities like Vienna or Salzburg, or a little Austrian village nestled among the vineyards, you will marvel at the beauty and strength of Austria.

Vienna , the capital, offers the most job opportunities in Austria. Brimming with historical significance, Vienna is a juxtaposition between the past and present. The center of the city is quite modern, but surrounded by buildings and monuments dating back to the 11th and 12th centuries. Technology, healthcare, hospitality, and education are the main types of professions. For example, if you are in hospitality and speak another language you will be at a great advantage. Educators will also be at an advantage as the major universities are located in Vienna, while technology and healthcare are major industries and many global companies look for special skills in those fields.

Salzburg . The name means “city of salt” or “river of salt” and it wasn’t part of Austria until 1816. If music is your field of interest, then Salzburg is probably most known as the birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and if film is your area of interest, then you will immediately notice the center sculpture filmed in the Sound of Music. Tourism and specialty schools are also very prevalent in Salzburg because of its respected reputation in the arts.

Innsbruck is located in western Austria in the Karwendel Alps and was the host of the 1964 and 1976 Winter Olympics. If you have experience in winter sports or tourism, Innsbruck is a natural place to look for a job in Austria. It is located halfway between Munich (Germany) and Verona (Italy). Winter sports are prevalent, however, in the summer, biking, swimming, and hiking are popular activities. It is more of a resort area catering to those looking for a winter or summer adventure. If you’re in the hospitality industry, Innsbruck is a hotspot for work in Austria. English and other languages are useful and will make it more likely for you to obtain a job in Innsbruck.

Graz is the second largest city in Austria, about 120 miles southwest of Vienna, and is on the UNESCO World Heritage Cultural site list. It is known as the “student city” with over six universities and is an ideal location for university professors. Jobs in technology and education are significant and growing in Graz. Since Graz is slightly less competitive than Vienna, it can offer good job opportunities to foreign workers.

Tourism & Hospitality . Austria is a popular tourist attraction no matter what month it is, so short term and seasonal work in Austria in the tourism and hospitality industry is available year round. If a seasonal job in Austria is what you’re looking for, then Innsbruck and Salzburg host the best and most rewarding potential tourism jobs for you. Those who want to work in Austria for 90 days or less will find work in the the tourism or hospitality industries to be a terrific option.

Technology. If you are a software engineer, web developer, or customer service technician with the most up-to-date skills and experience, then finding jobs in Austria shouldn’t be too hard for you. Many large global IT companies, such as Cisco, have significant offices in Austria and are always looking for experienced technology workers.

Education and the Arts have, throughout history, been part of the Austrian culture. In almost every city you will find exquisite museums, universities, theater, and of course, music. It is respected by the world over as a mecca of the arts for both teaching and learning.

Healthcare is one of the fastest growing industries globally and Austria is known for the best healthcare in the region. Since 2002, Austria has moved from primarily manufacturing to biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries. Strong growth in these research industries has provided for an increase in North American workers. Scientists are especially in demand for the many healthcare research organizations.

Work Schedule. The average work week is based on the industry, but is usually 37 to 40 hours Monday through Friday, except for the hospitality industry. If you are a full-time permanent employee, expect exceptional benefits, such as a minimum of five weeks compulsory vacation (holiday as it is called) and up to seven weeks depending on your age rather than your time at a company.

Language Requirements. Knowing the language or at least some conversational German is best and many companies will require it for jobs in Austria. English is used in many global companies and is surely an asset as a global language, but if you know at least some German it is a strong plus. Companies will hire for skills and experience and may require you to take German language classes . For example, Austrian universities require German as a language for their educators.

Austria is one of the richest countries in Europe and the cost of living is high, but the salaries are mostly commensurate. Monthly incomes are between 2,000 to 2,500 Euros gross (around $1,400 to $1,600). If you work in Austria in the field of hospitality, you may have additional benefits, such as meals, and most full-time positions will offer training. Other industries, such as education and health care, may offer you assistance with accommodations.

Salaries are high in Europe but so are the taxes. In Austria, taxes can go up to 37 to 45 percent of your gross salary. However, all social needs such as healthcare are completely covered. The more in demand your skills, the higher your salary will be.

Accommodation will depend on what city you live in and you specific job in Austria. For example, some universities and tourism jobs in Austria include accommodations. In Vienna, you will pay more for less space. The city is crowded and flats (apartments) are small. More than likely, a home will not be found in Vienna or Graz. However, if you want to commute into the city you will be able to find a home with more room, but not what you may be used to in the United States. Living quarters in Europe tend to be smaller than in the States in general.

You will need to have a workers visa to work abroad in Austria. Companies may have an easier time hiring you if you have specialized academic degrees, certifications, or work experience that is difficult to find in the EU, since sponsoring a foreigner’s work visa can be difficult. However, visas are not difficult to obtain if you have the right credentials, but the visa process does require special paperwork, including a recent FBI background check that will need to be translated to German. The hiring company will also need to provide the foreign police with the appropriate paperwork. For the most part your employer will be responsible for obtaining the appropriate documents.

  • History & Culture. The country has been an epicenter for the arts for hundreds of years making it an excellent place to explore musical history as well as see some amazing performances. An afternoon at the opera is quite inexpensive and there are many concerts whether in Vienna or Salzburg.
  • Music. No other country can boast the number of major composers, from Mozart to Shubert. There are 12 music festivals each year in Austria most notably the Salzburg Festival and the Vienna Festival Weeks.
  • Christmas Markets. Known throughout Europe, the Austrian Christmas Markets are a delight and many European will travel to Austria just to partake in the revelry of various booths and concerts.
  • Price. Austria is often expensive, but your salary should be proportional to your cost of living. Austrians are also famous for their efficiency and moderation, so living frugally is more of a cultural norm rather than a budgeting tactic.
  • Workforce Perks. The Austrians may be known for the rather strict work ethics, but they also know how to take time off and enjoy life. You will likely enjoy seven weeks of vacation as a part of the Austrian workforce not to mention access to an efficient and affordable transportation system that will connect you to the rest of Europe.

Work in Austria

The land of the picturesque, Austria is perfect for hiking, climbing and skiing. The country's high standard of living and higher than average wages also make it an attractive prospect for those wanting to work in Austria

Austria is ranked 11th in the World Happiness Report 2022 and its nine million-strong population benefits from low unemployment rates and a thriving economy.

Making the move is also a great way to acquire a second language and give your CV a boost. While English is widely spoken, German is Austria's official language, so you'll need it to succeed in the workplace.

In your free time there's plenty to do whatever your interests. For instance, you could you take on the hiking challenge provided by the Stubai Alps mountain range, attend the Formula One Austrian Grand Prix in Spielberg (July), visit Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna or go on a Sound of Music tour in Salzburg - the city where the classic was filmed.

Jobs in Austria

Austria boasts a well-developed economy that's currently strong, stable and, unlike other European countries, is dominated by its small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

Popular graduate jobs

  • Chemicals and metals
  • Electronics
  • Food industries
  • Vehicle manufacturing

As well as these, Austria boasts a 25% share of organic farms across the European Union (EU) member states ( Eurostat 2020 ) and is the EU field-leader in the generation of hydroelectric power.

Austrians are also globally recognised for their high-quality arts and crafts, including jewellery, ceramics and glassware.

Unsurprisingly, Austria is a popular holiday destination, thanks to the Alps and historical cities such as Vienna and Salzburg, so opportunities in the hospitality and tourism industry aren't hard to find.

  • ophthalmic opticians

How to get a job in Austria

Search for vacancies from your home country by using online jobs services such as EURES . Although the popularity of online applications is increasing in Austria, not all employers favour this method. Therefore, you may have to send your application via post.

When applying for a position, submit a concise CV with an attached photograph of yourself along with your qualification certificates. Be sure to include brief details of any previous relevant work experience, voluntary work and personal interests, as well as your contact details and previous education.

Your CV should be a maximum of two pages long and accompanied by a cover letter, with both written in German.

If you're invited to interview, you'll need to dress formally and make sure you're on time - Austrian employers place high importance on punctuality.

Summer jobs

Austria has a variety of seasonal work on offer, with summer jobs available in a range of fields. You could work in the country's booming tourist industry in bars, clubs, restaurants or cafes. Another option is to find work as a ski instructor in one of Austria's famous resorts.

There are also year-round opportunities for grape picking and au pair work. While usually poorly paid, you won't need to be fluent in German to work as an au pair and can typically expect food and accommodation to be included when taking up a position.

Seasonal jobs are a great way of exploring Austria and the work experience they provide will look great on your CV. To search for vacancies during ski season see Snow Season Central .

Alternatively, if you're looking to gain some hands-on experience and can afford to support your trip, you could consider a volunteering placement.

Volunteering schemes are available through:

  • International Voluntary Service (IVS) in Britain
  • WWOOF Austria - giving you the chance to volunteer on organic farms while getting to know the locals.

Teaching jobs

Austrians are taught English as a second language from a young age, but there are still opportunities to teach English in the country. Competition for posts is tough - especially in popular spots, such as Vienna and Salzburg - but if you're TEFL or TESOL qualified you stand a good chance of securing a position.

You could teach in a public school, private language academy or university, assisting a variety of students with a range of abilities. You could be teaching young children just starting to learn, or business professionals wanting to brush up their skills.

The British Council currently offers around 80 language teaching assistant posts in Austria each year, lasting a full academic year.

You'll be placed in two schools, expected to work for approximately 13 hours a week and will be paid €1,300 (£1,114.) per month. The scheme is open to those aged 35 or under with competence in German to at least A2 standard.

For more information, see the British Council Language Assistants - Austria .

Internships

Placements and internships in Austria are common and flexible, and range from just a few weeks to a year in length. Opportunities are listed on websites such as GoAbroad.com .

Those from outside the EU will need to secure an Austrian National Visa (Visa D) if planning to embark on an internship in Austria.

If you're looking to pursue a career in science or technology, the Institute of Science and Technology (IST) Austria - Internships has information about year-round opportunities and their summer programme, the ISTernship.

The UK government run the Turing Scheme for students looking to secure international work experience. Check that your university is involved in the programme and offers the Turing Scheme.

Other internship and summer work placements can be found at:

  • AIESEC UK - for students and recent graduates
  • IAESTE UK - for science, engineering and applied arts students.

Austrian visas

Those outside the EU (this now includes the UK) will need a visa to work in Austria. There are a number of different visa types available. Contact your local Austrian embassy or consulate to find out more about visa requirements. See the Austrian Foreign Ministry for a list of representation authorities worldwide, including the Austrian Embassy London . Another useful resource for UK nationals is GOV.UK Travel to Austria for work .

If you're a EU or European Economic Area (EEA) citizen , you won't need a work permit or visa to enter the country and look for employment, meaning relocating to Austria could be easier than you think. That being said, you'll face restrictions if you're coming from Croatia.

For those who require a visa, there are a number of types available for different purposes. These include:

  • The EU Blue card - a type of residence and work permit tied to specific job offer. You must hold a university degree to be granted a card, which entitles you to work for a period of up to two years.
  • The Red-White-Red card - this is a points-based immigration system that enables you to work for an Austrian employer for up to 12 months. In order to qualify you must be highly qualified, a skilled worker in an occupation facing shortages, a self-employed key worker or a graduate of an Austrian university.
  • The Jobseeker visa - allows highly-qualified non-EU citizens to look for work in Austria for a period of six months. If you secure employment during this time you must apply for the appropriate work permit.

visit austria jobs

Language requirements

As part of the National Action Plan for Integration (NAP), the Austrian Federal Government feel  that a solid grasp of German - spoken and written - is the basis of successful integration in Austria, from both a professional and social perspective.

The Österreichisches Sprachdiplom Deutsch (ÖSD) , or the Austrian Language Diploma, is Austria's officially-recognised examination system for German as a foreign language. You can take the exam at centres in more than 45 countries around the world.

Other institutions and organisations also offer a variety of German language courses. For more information, visit the association of Austrian language schools Campus Austria .

How to explain your qualifications to employers

Thanks to the Bologna Process, an agreement between European countries to offer comparability in standards of teaching and quality of qualifications across Europe, any higher education qualifications obtained in the UK are directly comparable to their Austrian counterparts. If you're heading to the country to work with a UK Bachelors, Masters or PhD, these will typically be recognised and accepted by Austrian employers.

However, it's best to check with potential employers before submitting an application.

To find out more about how your qualifications are recognised, see ENIC-NARIC .

What's it like to work in Austria?

As an employee in Austria you can expect to work an eight-hour day and a 40-hour week. In some industries you may work a slightly shorter, 38-hour week.

You'll be entitled to a generous five weeks of leave per year, increasing to six weeks after 25 years' service. This is in addition to the country's 13 annual paid public holidays.

As there's no national statutory minimum wage, respective job sectors set their own by collective agreement - €1500 (£1,285) per month. In rarer cases, individual employers will stipulate their own minimum wage.

A typical salary in Austria is roughly €43,000 (excluding Vienna which is higher), the equivalent of about £37,000.

The country operates a progressive rate of income tax of 0-50%. The amount of tax you pay will depend on what you earn. Income tax and insurance contributions are deducted from your salary each month. For more information on tax and working conditions see migration.gov.at - Income and taxation .

Work and Travel Austria: Explore One of the World’s Richest Countries

After finishing high school, I knew I wanted to live abroad before starting college. Once I made that decision, I wrestled with where I wanted to go.

I’d studied German in high school and planned to study it in college when I returned. So going to a German-speaking country was the natural choice for me. I’d already been to Germany and Switzerland, and I wanted to try a new country. Plus, I didn’t fancy trying to cope with Swiss German  for an entire year!

That’s how I decided to work and travel in Austria.

Unless you’re big on skiing or mountains, working and traveling in Austria may not have been on the top of your bucket list.

Austria is Germany’s smaller counterpart and hidden between a bunch of other countries in Central and Eastern Europe. Many write off this small nation as an extension of Germany that’s a bit out of the way.

(Don’t ever say that to an Austrian, though, or you’ll risk being thoroughly told off in German!)

Download: This blog post is available as a convenient and portable PDF that you can take anywhere. Click here to get a copy. (Download)

Why Work and Travel in Austria?

So why should you go to Austria?

Although less frequently visited than larger Central European countries, Austria has a lot to offer that nearby nations just can’t match.

  • Austria is one of Europe’s richest countries . While this means it can be a bit more expensive to travel and buy commodities, it also means most of the products you buy and the services you receive are high-quality. And if you work in Austria, the pay should match the cost of living!
  • Austria’s capital is the beautiful Vienna, which is home to the Vienna State Opera, the world’s oldest zoo , and approximately one-quarter of the Austrian population.
  • 62% of Austria is covered by the Alps . Wherever you go, you’ll never be too far from breathtaking mountainous landscapes .
  • It’s home to the Eisriesenwelt , the world’s largest ice cave and a popular tourist destination.
  • Working and traveling in Austria means that you can not only pick up or improve your  German language skills , but you can also add Austrian-German slang into your dictionary. This is something that will definitely make you stand out from the crowd and impress your Austrian and German friends alike.
  • Austria is a landlocked country, bordered by eight other nations. This makes Austria perfect for workers who want to travel all around Europe. Liechtenstein, Slovenia, Italy, Hungary, Slovakia, Germany, the Czech Republic and Switzerland are all just a short drive away!

Work in Austria

When I decided to move to Austria, the first thing I did was sift through all the information on Google. There were pages. And pages. And pages.

It’s daunting enough moving abroad , let alone having to sift through a ton of overwhelming information.

So here’s a quick cheat sheet of everything you should know about moving to and working in Austria.

What can I expect working in Austria?

Austria is frequently ranked near the top of the list as having the highest standards of living in the world , and its capital Vienna nearly always hits the top for being one of the world’s most livable cities .

The working standard in Austria reflects this, with high salaries and benefits galore.

The logistics of working in Austria

  • Salary :  Your pay will depend on your job, but the net average for 2018 is €2,324 (2,626 USD) per month.
  • Living Costs:  €1,300 to €2,200 (1,500 to 2,499 USD).
  • Office hours: 9-5 or eight hours per day. You’ll always be paid for overtime. It’s common to finish work by noon on Fridays.
  • Holidays: 25 days per year.
  • Benefits:  Sick leave is provided and paid for (but a doctor’s note must be provided after the second day). Depending on your job and employment status, you could also receive other benefits, such as healthcare or a daily free meal at the office.

Visa requirements

Citizens from the EU don’t need a visa to work in Austria. But if you want to stay for more than three months at a time, travelers from certain countries will need to get a residence permit.

Other visitors, including US citizens, will need to visit the Austrian Embassy, where you’ll have to provide documents and have your fingerprints taken. Due to these requirements, you have to actually appear in person—no exceptions!

You can read the details about   applying for a visa to work in Austria here .

If you just wish to travel Austria without working, a 90-day visa-free entry is granted for American citizens within a 180-day period.

What jobs can I work in Austria?

Common jobs and sectors.

Austria’s official language is German, so if you have German language skills, finding a job will be much easier.

If you don’t speak German or your language skills are minimal, you can probably still find a job. You just might be limited to certain sectors.

Remember to keep an open mind when job hunting. Even if your first job offer isn’t for your ideal gig, remember that this job can open a lot of doors. And remember that you’re in a new country. You’re not just here to work, you’re here to explore Austria!

Here are your best options for work:

  • English teaching (No German language skills are required)
  • Tourism (German language skills are a bonus)
  • Internships  (German is usually required)
  • Hospitality  (Depending on the job, sometimes speaking German is just a bonus, other times it’s required)
  • The business industry  (Similar to hospitality, German skills are sometimes required and sometimes just make you stand out from other foreign applicants)

Seasonal work in Austria

  • Au pair :  Work for the summer holiday as a live-in nanny and become part of the family! Working as an au pair isn’t strictly seasonal. You can definitely find a year-round job. However, due to school holidays, even more families look for au pairs for summer months.
  • Ski resorts :  Work as a ski and/or snowboard instructor at one of Austria’s many ski resorts.
  • Vineyards :  Work on a vineyard and pick grapes for the upcoming harvest.

Career websites

There are multiple resources for finding a job in Austria. After arriving, you could look in the local newspaper or go to career centers. The best way to find a quality job is usually to search in-person once you’re already in Austria.

However, you may want to have a job secured before you arrive. Turning to the internet is the easiest and most practical way to find a job.

Most websites will offer English translations. But to get a full view of all available jobs, try searching in German or ask a German-speaking friend to assist.

  • Jobs in Vienna :  A wide range of jobs are available for both English- and German-speakers.
  • Indeed : This is a familiar face that also works in Austria!
  • Der Standard (The Standard) and  Karriere (Career) :  These newspapers’ websites always have job listings for multiple sectors posted and kept up to date.
  • Monster Austria : One of the oldest and most trusted websites for finding a job, this is the Austrian version of Monster.
  • Career Jet : This is yet another popular choice for finding jobs around the world. Including in Austria!

Volunteer in Austria

Sure, working in another country is a great way to travel. And simply grabbing a backpack and hopping on a train is a fun way to explore. But have you ever considered volunteering abroad?

Volunteering in Austria will give you a unique opportunity to learn about a the country, culture and language.

At the same time, volunteer positions usually offer free accommodation , food and other benefits that will help you spend as much time in the country as possible without financial problems popping up. This is a godsend, because finances tend to be the most stressful part of traveling!

work and travel austria

If you want to volunteer in Austria, I seriously recommend going through Workaway . This website has over 300 listings for volunteer positions around the country in a myriad of sectors.

Here are some of the most common volunteer opportunities in Austria:

  • Volunteering with children
  • Volunteering with animals
  • Volunteering on a farm

  • Volunteering on a vineyard

Travel Around Austria

Austria is a relatively small country, with a total area of 83,878 km² (32,385 mi²). This means you can easily use the train and bus systems to get around the country.

If you have an International Driving Permit , there’s nothing better than driving through Austria’s mountainous roads on a summer afternoon. With no one else around and the music blasting!

Austria has both big, bustling cities and stretches of countryside that remind you of childhood fairy tale settings. But the thing that really sets Austria apart from other nearby countries? The history and culture that seem to be everywhere and are deeply routed in locals’ mindsets.

Whatever you’re looking for, you can find it in Austria.

work and travel austria

Austria’s capital is a must-visit while you live in Austria.

Take in the history at the Vienna State Opera and Schönbrunn Palace. Learn about famous residents such as Mozart, Beethoven and Sigmund Freud.

work and travel austria

Visit the second largest city in Austria. This ancient Roman town is home to six universities and a never-ending supply of beautiful buildings. It’s definitely a must-visit for architecture lovers.

Countryside locations

Don’t focus so much on big cities that you miss out on some amazing scenery.

The popular Neusiedl See (Neusiedl Lake), which belongs to both Austria and Hungary, is just an hour outside of Vienna and offers swimming in summer and ice skating in winter.

Or head inland to the Grüner See  (Green Lake) in Steiermark to see glorious, vibrant green colors that really make Green Lake live up to its name.

Naked? With Strangers? In Europe, It’s How You Relax at the Spa.

Austria and Germany abound with popular resorts called thermen where getting the full sauna experience typically means having to take it all off.

An illustration of many people of many different ages and skin tones wearing no clothes, lounging in a flowery garden and a sauna. Leaves, flowers, books and steam inside the sauna obscure the bathers’ breasts and other private parts, and in the background, there is a bright blue lake and a snow-dappled mountain range.

By Valeriya Safronova

Valeriya Safronova, who is based in Vienna, steamed and soaked at three nude spas while reporting for this article.

Had I ever seen so much bare flesh in one room? Naked in a mixed-gender Austrian sauna, I sat opposite two dozen other nude people on wooden benches. Even after more than a year of living in Europe, as an American, I still felt a little uncomfortable sitting there in nothing but my own skin.

The sauna master came in to warm things up. Tall and lanky, wearing just a towel wrapped around his hips, he wheeled in a cart with several grapefruit-size balls of crushed ice infused with essential oils like black pepper, lime and eucalyptus. After a short speech telling us to leave immediately if we felt dizzy, he placed one of the ice balls onto a tray of hot coals, and it began to sizzle. The smell reminded me of an expensive aromatic candle: a touch sweet, a touch spicy.

He twisted forward, backward and sideways with a large towel clutched between his hands, like a half-dressed matador, moving the air around the room with a singular goal: to get us very, very hot, as part of a sauna ritual called aufguss, German for “infusion.” As I watched, mesmerized, I began to forget my awkwardness — or that I was even naked.

No swimsuits allowed

Austria and Germany abound with spas called thermen — resorts with pools, saunas, lakes, restaurants, bars and treatment areas. Typically, they have a warm mineral spring, and a section where nudity is required. Walk in wearing swim trunks and you’ll get glares and maybe even reprimands.

I had traveled to St. Martins Therme & Lodge in Frauenkirchen, a small town about an hour southeast of Vienna. St. Martins stands next to a serene, shallow lake where guests can swim in the summer or take a cold plunge in winter. At the center of the therme is an atrium with a pool that has indoor and outdoor areas connected via a tunnel, floor-to-ceiling windows that look out onto the lake and several levels of balconies with rows of lounge chairs. The complex has five saunas and a steam room; 11 thermal pools; a treatment area with massages, facials and more; a restaurant; and a cafe. A day pass is 53 euros, or about $58.

After about five minutes of intense sweating in the sauna, we moved on to the second stage of the aufguss: Still naked, we filed outside into a courtyard with a whirlpool and walls covered in vines. My skin was so hot that the normally stinging 40-degree November air felt like a balm. An attendant handed each of us scoops of a salt-and-coconut-oil scrub, which we dutifully rubbed into our skin.

Thoroughly scoured, we returned to our perches inside, where the sauna master whipped out an oversize fan and spent the next six or seven minutes in a hot-air crescendo. After about 15 minutes total, the aufguss ended, and we flooded back out through the door, our bodies bright red and steamy.

Sit back, relax and ‘don’t stare’

The aufguss is just one of the joys of a day at a therme, which might also include a body treatment, a soak in a heated outdoor pool with rotating jets and a fresh schnitzel with an icy glass of wheat beer or sparkling apple juice. For locals in German-speaking countries, the aufguss is a hugely popular pastime, especially in the late fall and winter.

“I really enjoy it after a week of hard work, or when I just need relaxation, or if my body is really tense and my muscles are really stiff,” said Laura Blumenstiel, 29, a psychologist from Freiburg, in the southwestern corner of Germany, who has been a frequent visitor to thermen for about decade.

Typically, a therme complex is divided into two sections: one with several heated indoor and outdoor pools, where bathing suits are required and children are allowed, and a second that usually contains all the saunas, where clothing is verboten.

For some Americans, including me, nudity, especially in a mixed-gender environment, can initially feel extremely uncomfortable. Keon West, a professor of social psychology at Goldsmiths, University of London, explained that cultural standards often affect what level of nudity people find tolerable: In some places, seeing women with their hair uncovered might feel racy, while in others, stripping down on a public beach is perfectly acceptable.

“You might think the Germans are a bit risqué, whereas they think they’re normal, and you’re a bit silly,” Dr. West said.

In countries like the United States, he said, there is a “highly sexualized and puritanical culture, where sex is tightly controlled. Attitudes are generally much more conservative concerning what women do and women’s bodies. In Europe that tends to be less of the case.”

In a number of studies, Dr. West and his team have found that being naked around others can increase self-confidence and life satisfaction. “If you go to a naturist event, you see a lot of normal people, people who aren’t airbrushed and aren’t Beyoncé, and you realize you don’t look bad compared to the average person,” Dr. West said. “And you spend time naked in their company and nothing bad happens. No one says anything bad to you, no one laughs at you.”

Some Americans have found that the discomfort of being nude in the sauna is fleeting and has a worthwhile payoff.

After moving to Graz, Austria, Amy Feineman, 38, a saddle fitter originally from Colorado, made the hourlong drive to Rogner Bad Blumau , a colorful, trippy therme and hotel designed by Friedensreich Hundertwasser, an Austrian architect who believed that “the straight line is the curse of our civilization.” At the therme (day visit, €57), this philosophy translates to wavy floors, circular buildings with uneven ceilings, and bright orange, blue and green mosaics. On their first visit, Ms. Feineman and her husband skipped the nude sauna area, instead exploring the pools and outdoor gardens partly clothed. But on their second visit, they felt brave enough to bare it all in the sauna area.

“It took us most of our first day there to build up the courage to check it out, and then we spent most of our time there,” Ms. Feineman said. “I’m a plus-size person, and in the U.S., I would never wear a bikini in public. Here, I’m happily walking around the nude area.”

Ms. Feineman and her husband are regular guests at Rogner Bad Blumau now. Her main piece of advice for other nervous Americans? “Don’t stare,” she said. “And don’t worry about them judging you either.”

The most basic entry ticket to a therme, with the sauna section included, usually costs from €40 to €65, depending on how fancy or large the complex is. Typically, thermen offer at least three ticket options: a three- or four-hour pass, a day pass, and an evening pass. For example, Therme Erding in Germany, about an hour northeast of Munich, has 24 saunas and a large indoor-outdoor pool in the nude section, and costs €62 for an entire weekend day.

The best way to experience a therme is to relax and settle in for at least a half day. Bring a book. Schedule a massage, a facial or a “soft pack,” a treatment in which a massage therapist rubs a hydrating cream into your skin, then leaves you ensconced in a contraption that’s a cross between a sleeping bag and a warm water bed.

Thermen usually offer packages that encourage daylong retreats. For example, St. Martins, where my aufguss odyssey began, has an option that costs €107 and includes a bathrobe, slippers, unlimited towels and snacks.

Sweltering with a soundtrack

The sauna master was playing pulsing Austrian pop music and handing out bottles of cold, nonalcoholic beer to the 40 or so of us gathered at Alpentherme Gastein , about 90 minutes south of Salzburg (day visit, €45.50), for a party-themed evening aufguss. The balls of crushed ice flashed from the lights shining beneath them, and he encouraged us to chat, a rarity in most saunas.

Aufguss sessions come in all different types. Some sauna masters blast Metallica, while others prefer calming beats. Some dress up as Vikings. But there are two immutable rules: No clothes, and don’t enter an aufguss once it’s started (you can leave anytime).

A few other tips: Always sit on a towel in the dry saunas, claim your spot at an aufguss a few minutes early (the higher you sit, the hotter you’ll be), don’t bring your phone into nude areas, and shower before entering.

I had come a long way toward embracing my naked self by the time I sat down in the party-themed aufguss and started grooving to the music. It required a little bit of letting go: of my fears, of my ego and of my control. Glancing around — without staring, of course — I could see that no one around me looked like Jennifer Lopez or Jeremy Allen White. We were all just beautiful lumps and bumps.

Was anyone judging my body? To be honest, I was way too hot to care.

A ‘cowboy ski town’ where high earners can’t afford a home faces a housing battle

Image:

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, Colo. — Despite offering a salary of $167,000, the city of Steamboat Springs can’t find a head of human resources who can afford a place to live in the remote Colorado community surrounded by ranches and famous for training Olympic athletes.

At the Steamboat hospital, doctors willing to pay more than $1 million for a home have been repeatedly outbid by all-cash, out-of-town buyers, and housing costs have caused some positions to go unfilled for more than two years. The local ski resort has been leasing a hotel for its employees to live in as the homes they once rented are increasingly turned into short-term rentals for visitors.

“Houses used to be for employees and hotels for guests. Now houses are for guests and hotels are for employee housing,” said Loryn Duke, director of communications for the Steamboat ski resort. “We have a lot of great staff who are early in their careers or have young families, but they just aren’t able to put down those roots.”

In Steamboat, along with other mountain towns and destination communities across the country, a pandemic-fueled real estate boom driven by remote workers, second-home buyers and short-term rental investors has caused home prices to nearly double. Those prices have shown few signs of easing, despite rising interest rates and a push for remote workers to return to the office, leaving even high-income professionals struggling to find housing in small, rural communities across the country.

“I know that it’s so hard for folks outside of mountain or resort communities to even wrap their heads around, but housing is just so through the roof that unless you’re extremely wealthy, it’s unattainable,” said Margaret Bowes, executive director of the Colorado Association of Ski Towns.

But addressing the problem has created a predicament of its own, dividing residents in a battle over how to provide more housing and who should pay for it.

Local governments and state legislatures, including those in Utah and Virginia , have been at odds over restrictions on short-term rentals like Airbnbs, and ballot initiatives to add taxes to those rentals have had mixed results at the polls. When it comes to building more housing, residents have mounted opposition to some efforts over concerns about everything from traffic congestion to wildlife migration patterns.

In Steamboat, the latest battle lines have been drawn over a 534-acre ranch that the city’s housing authority purchased with a $24 million anonymous donation. Under the current proposal , the housing authority would use state and federal grants and proceeds from a recently passed tax on short-term rentals to build more than 2,200 housing units in phases. Sale and rental of the properties would be restricted to residents who meet a certain income threshold, work locally, and plan to live in the unit full-time.

“In this environment where there’s always going to be significant amounts of demand, we have to deal with it on the supply side, and our supply side just has not kept up year over year over year over year,” said Jason Peasley, director of the Yampa Valley Housing Authority, which would oversee the development.

The project, called Brown Ranch, has been met with opposition from a group of local residents who have raised concerns about its financing and the impact on traffic and local infrastructure, along with what it could mean for the character of the community.

During a city council meeting in October that stretched into the early-morning hours, dozens of residents spoke for and against the project, with supporters pleading for affordable housing and opponents urging the city to scale back the plans or take more time to study the impact. In the end, a divided city council voted to approve the Brown Ranch plan. But opponents collected more than 1,000 signatures to get the development placed on the ballot on March 26, leaving the final decision up to voters.

Jim Engelken, who has lived in Steamboat since 1979 and previously served on the city council, has been helping organize the opposition. Engelken said he sees a need for more affordable housing but would like to see the development downsized or grow at a slower pace.

“Yes, we need affordable housing, no question,” Engelken said. “It needs to be smaller to start with, it needs to have some ability to generate its own way, its own money.”

He said he is concerned that the city won’t have enough funds for the planned infrastructure, like parks and public transit, and that the projected 6,000 people who will ultimately live at the development — the majority of whom are expected to move there from out of town — will add to traffic congestion and create a need for more water infrastructure.

“It’s an overreach, it’s too big, it’s too much, it’s too expensive, it causes too many problems for the existing city,” said Engelken. “We’re concerned that the infrastructure won’t be in place in this new, large, separate portion of our city, and it will create a second-class neighborhood. That the people living there will be treated like second-class citizens who don’t have access to public transportation or city parks, and we don’t know how many of them are coming from outside.”

With a population of around 13,000, Steamboat has prided itself on its small-town, Western feel. While housing has always been a struggle for entry-level and hourly workers, Steamboat had been viewed as relatively affordable for middle-income professionals compared to other mountain towns, like Vail, Colorado, or Jackson, Wyoming.

“Steamboat has always been known as a cowboy ski town. It’s real authentic,” said Steamboat City Manager Gary Suiter. “And the real estate prices had not gotten crazy like everywhere else. Well, that ended with the pandemic.”

Since 2020, single-family home prices have increased about 80% to $1.8 million on average, and all real estate sales, including condos, increased 64% to $1.1 million, according to data compiled by Jon Wade, a local realtor. For existing homeowners, those rising sale prices have caused property taxes to shoot up, with the average tax assessment up 86%, Wade said.

That’s put homeownership largely out of reach for most people making less than $200,000 a year. And even for those who can afford a home at that price, the competition for housing is so fierce given the low inventory that those without all-cash offers are often losing out, said local realtors.

“We are seeing across all segments of the market even high-paid professionals, they’re turning down jobs because they spend a little time looking at housing costs and they can’t do it,” said Christy Belton, who has been selling real estate in Steamboat for 20 years and whose family has been in the community for five generations.  “The people who are coming here are paying a million dollars for an entry-level house — a totally entry-level, 50-year-old house.”

Steamboat isn’t alone in its struggles. As demand shot up during the pandemic, so did prices in more high-profile destination towns like Aspen, Colorado, and Park City, Utah. With even wealthy homebuyers priced out of those markets, they began looking to more off-the-beaten-path locations.

In Driggs, Idaho, which used to be an affordable-housing refuge for workers in more pricey Jackson Hole, average home prices have also gone up around 80% to $735,000 since the start of the pandemic, according to data from Zillow. Woodstock, New York, has seen prices increase 78% to more than $600,000 on average amid an influx of buyers from New York City. In Gatlinburg, Tennessee, a popular resort community in the Great Smoky Mountains but not one known as a hot housing market, home values have risen more than 80% to an average of $480,000.

Houses dot a hillside in Steamboat Springs, Colo.,

For the city of Steamboat, the high housing costs have caused two job candidates to turn down a position overseeing the town’s human resources and risk management because they were unable to find a place to live despite the six-figure salary, said Suiter. Even Suiter’s daughter and son-in-law, with well-paying jobs and a home in Denver, had to abandon their plans to move to Steamboat after the pandemic because the town he runs had become too expensive for them.

The main hospital for the region, UCHealth Yampa Valley Medical Center, has had positions for mammography technologists go unfilled for more than two years. Even for its highest-paying positions, like doctors and administrators, housing has been a struggle.

“No income earner is immune. Even your top earners with physician pay ranges are sitting in my office saying, ‘I don’t know if I can afford to live here,’” said the hospital’s president, Soniya Fidler.  “I think that probably every week there’s someone who comes back and tells me we lost someone because of housing.”

Sanaya Sturm, the nursing manager at the hospital’s cancer center, is among those hospital employees who have been struggling. When Sturm moved to Steamboat in October 2020, her family of four sold their 3,600-square-foot house in Denver and planned to temporarily live in a 1,500-square-foot rental for $3,350 a month until they found a place to purchase in Steamboat.

At the time she began her search, the average home price was within her budget with the money from the sale of her Denver home and the income from her and her husband, who works remotely as a product manager. But as Sturm began her search for a new home, so did hundreds of out-of-town buyers looking to relocate to Steamboat or buy a second home.

“I can say confidently that I’m now priced out,” said Sturm. “We had the means in the early-2021 price range, but unfortunately I don’t think that’s an option for us right now as things stand with the interest rates and the price of housing.”

Sturm said she was outbid on more than a dozen homes, often by all-cash, out-of-town buyers putting in bids as much as $100,000 over the asking price. She saw one home she was outbid on put up for rent shortly after the sale closed for $7,500 a month.

“It’s really kind of a knife in the gut that’s being turned,” she said.

To address the problem, the hospital has gone into the residential real estate business and is building 42 apartments with rent that will be capped at around 30% of the employee’s income. While the hospital could be spending the money it is investing in housing instead on new patient facilities or updated equipment, Fidler said the hospital has little choice unless it is going to cut back on the services it provides because of a shortage of staff.

“It is hard because we are here to deliver health care, we’re not here to deliver houses. Usually, if we have the dollars to spend, it is on state-of-the-art equipment and upgrading our facilities,” Fidler said. “But we don’t want to have to close services, especially because we can’t staff for it.”

At stake, residents say, isn’t just the fate of their own personal lives or businesses, but the larger character of the community where they says they’re more likely to run into ranchers and Olympic skiers than celebrities or billionaires around town.

“You come downtown and it’s full of normal people, which is one of the primary attractions here. We’re still very authentic,” said Suiter. “That’s one of our biggest threats is that we become so exclusive that we lose our character.”

Shannon Pettypiece is senior policy reporter for NBC News digital.

I'm an NYU student who commutes from New York to Florida every weekend for my internship. I've spent nearly $10,000 on travel.

  • I'm an NYU student who landed a dream internship in Florida.
  • Every weekend, I super commute from New York to Florida to work my internship all weekend.
  • I'm making a lot of money but I'm spending nearly $10,000 on travel during my super commute.

Insider Today

In high school, I ran my own travel agency. From that experience, I developed an appreciation for customer service and luxury hotel brands. When I enrolled at New York University last year, I decided to pursue an internship in the hospitality industry as a freshman.

However, given the relative scarcity of internships at luxury hotel companies in New York City, I broadened my search to opportunities nationwide. I got three interviews in three cities: Scottsdale, Arizona ; Las Vegas; and Naples, Florida — all during midterm season.

Undertaking these interviews was a massive gamble, requiring me to invest over $1,500 in plane tickets and fly to and from each city on the same day. But, I knew I had to bet on myself.

I received two offers: one from The Ritz-Carlton, Naples, and another from a corporate office in Las Vegas for a different hotel chain. Having admired The Ritz-Carlton my entire life, choosing the former option was a pretty easy decision.

However, navigating the logistical challenges of super commuting —coordinating flights, securing accommodations, and managing my full-time studies — has been anything but easy.

My schedule has been the most difficult part

I am incredibly fortunate to have a manager who has accommodated my unique schedule, allowing me to work exclusively on weekends. This arrangement makes my super-commute between New York and Florida feasible — albeit invariably tight.

My classes run from Monday through Friday — starting at 11 a.m. on Monday and ending at 12:15 p.m. on Friday. After class, I head to the airport, boarding either the subway or a train. Travel time often doubles as study time — whether in-flight or waiting at the gate . I typically take an Uber or a shuttle to my hotel after landing.

Generally, the total travel time from my dorm to my hotel ranges from five to eight hours, door-to-door, depending on the airport and hotel locations. However, flight delays, such as one that resulted in my arriving at 1 a.m., can extend this timeline significantly.

Thankfully, the Ritz-Carlton provides highly competitive compensation — particularly due to the extensive hours required.

After finishing on Sunday, I head straight from the property to the airport to catch my 9 p.m. flight, arriving in New York around midnight. I then take a train or subway back to NYU, ultimately returning to my dorm between 2 and 3 a.m. on Monday.

This may not be feasible for everyone

I will acknowledge that achieving this particular feat was largely made possible by a unique set of circumstances. First, residing in New York City offers access to almost unlimited flights , ensuring flexibility in timing and competitive pricing. I have five airports within a train ride's distance to choose from.

On the accommodations front, being a Marriott associate has granted me significant discounts at Marriott hotels, keeping me profitable even amid Naples' sky-high winter prices. This benefit — combined with a supportive manager who has been very accommodating of my schedule — offers a level of flexibility that would have been unattainable under any other circumstances.

Plus, money certainly is certainly an issue. I use almost all of my pay to afford this travel. In all, I've spent just under $10,000 on hotels, flights, and cars. That means I will not have much money left over when this internship is over.

Even though it's difficult, I don't regret it

The transformative experiences and incredible lessons I'm learning at The Ritz-Carlton are preparing me for the future, instilling in me the values of diligence, adaptability, and a deep focus on customer satisfaction.

Despite the challenges of traveling thousands of miles monthly, the rewards have been immeasurable. Plus, the connections I have made, both within the company and in the broader community — many of whom come from backgrounds different from mine — have significantly broadened my perspective. I have encountered dozens of fascinating individuals simply by sitting next to them on a flight.

I'm often asked how I juggle my role at The Ritz-Carlton, coursework, and various other projects without feeling overwhelmed. My answer is simple: I don't see all of this as work but as the pursuit of my passions. Each task I embark on is driven by sincere interest and ambition, making every day an opportunity for discovery, learning, and personal growth.

A Proclamation on Women’s History Month,   2024

During Women’s History Month, we celebrate the courageous women who have helped our Nation build a fairer, more just society.       Throughout history, the vision and achievements of powerful women have strengthened our Nation and opened the doors of opportunity wider for all of us.  Though their stories too often go untold, all of us stand on the shoulders of these sung and unsung trailblazers — from the women who took a stand as suffragists, abolitionists, and labor leaders to pioneering scientists and engineers, groundbreaking artists, proud public servants, and brave members of our Armed Forces.

Despite the progress that these visionaries have achieved, there is more work ahead to knock down the barriers that stand in the way of women and girls realizing their full potential — in a country founded on freedom and equality, nothing is more fundamental.  That is why my Administration has put women and girls at the heart of everything we do.  When I first came into office, I established the White House Gender Policy Council to advance their rights and opportunities across domestic and foreign policy.  I also released the Nation’s first-ever National Gender Strategy to advance gender equity and equality across my Administration — from women’s economic security and leadership opportunities to freedom from gender-based violence and equal access to education and health care.  Women are seated at every table where decisions are made in my Administration — from our first female Vice President, Kamala Harris, to a record number of female cabinet secretaries to the most diverse set of judges ever nominated to the Federal bench, including Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson.

If we want to have the strongest economy in the world, we cannot leave women — half of our workforce — behind.  Since I have been in office, the economy has created nearly 15 million jobs, and we have seen the lowest unemployment rate among women in more than five decades.  As we implement major pieces of legislation like the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, the CHIPS and Science Act, and the Inflation Reduction Act, we are ensuring that women get their fair share of opportunities.  We are increasing their access to new jobs in sectors where women have been historically underrepresented, like manufacturing, construction, and clean energy.  We are championing equal pay, including issuing new regulations that advance pay equity and pay transparency for Federal workers and employees of Federal contractors.

We are making sure women have access to the resources they need to enter and remain in the workforce, including high-quality, affordable child care.  My Administration’s American Rescue Plan helped working mothers, especially during the most challenging times of the pandemic, by keeping the doors of 220,000 child care centers open — 90 percent of which are owned and staffed by women.  Our Child Tax Credit cut the number of children in poverty by 50 percent and provided breathing room for 65 million children and their families, and we will keep fighting to restore it.  I have also signed legislation that provides new protections for pregnant and postpartum workers.

To promote the health and wellness of women in America, under the leadership of Vice President Harris, we launched the Blueprint for Addressing the Maternal Health Crisis to combat the high incidence of maternal mortality — especially for Black, Native, and rural women — due to systemic inequities in quality health care.  We have expanded access to health care services for women veterans — the fastest growing group of veterans receiving services at the Department of Veterans Affairs.  Last fall, we launched the White House Initiative on Women’s Health Research to change how we approach and fund women’s health research, and pioneer the next generation of discoveries in women’s health care.

Further, Vice President Harris and I are fighting to protect women’s reproductive freedom.  In 2022, the Supreme Court made an extreme decision to overturn Roe v. Wade , reversing nearly five decades of recognizing a woman’s constitutional right to choose and make deeply personal decisions about her health care.  Now, tens of millions of women live in States with an extreme and dangerous abortion ban currently in effect.  Across the country, women are being turned away from emergency rooms, forced to go to court to seek permission for the medical attention they need, and made to travel hundreds of miles for care.  This is unacceptable.  That is why I have taken action to safeguard access to reproductive care, including abortion and contraception.  Vice President Harris and I will keep calling on the Congress to restore the protections of Roe v. Wade in Federal law — the only way to ensure women in every State have the right to choose.

As we lift up women’s health and economic prosperity, we also have to protect their physical security.  As a United States Senator, I was proud to write the Violence Against Women Act, which helped change the culture of silence around the scourge of gender-based violence in America.  When we reauthorized the law, we increased our total investment in prevention and support to $700 million for 2023 alone — the highest funding ever to protect women from gender-based violence in nearly 30 years.  I have also spearheaded historic military justice reforms to better protect survivors and ensure that, in cases of gender-based violence, prosecutorial decisions are fully independent from the chain of command.  Last year, my Administration released the first-ever National Plan to End Gender-Based Violence, advancing a comprehensive Government-wide approach to preventing and addressing gender-based violence across the United States.

Globally, my Administration is supporting initiatives that help expand access to child care, end gender-based violence, cut the digital gender divide in half, promote women’s leadership, and more.  Thanks to the leadership of Vice President Harris, we have galvanized more than $2.9 billion in investments to advance the economic status of women around the world and ensure they play a meaningful role in the industries of the future.

This Women’s History Month, may we recognize the long, storied history of great women helping to realize our Nation’s founding promise and highest aspirations.  May we all continue working to build a world worthy of the dreams and goals of all women and girls.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, JOSEPH R. BIDEN JR., President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim March 2024 as Women’s History Month.  I call upon all Americans to observe this month and to celebrate International Women’s Day on March 8, 2024, with appropriate programs, ceremonies, and activities.  I also invite all Americans to visit WomensHistoryMonth.gov to learn more about the vital contributions of women to our Nation’s history.       IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this twenty-ninth day of February, in the year of our Lord two thousand twenty-four, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and forty-eighth.                                        JOSEPH R. BIDEN JR.
