New to TTG?
Winners of the 2023 travel marketing awards revealed.
Tui UK, Abta and Finn Partners were among the winners at the 2023 Travel Marketing Awards, which also saw media partner TTG Media present the event’s first-ever diversity, equity and inclusion accolade.
Tui UK took home the In-House Team of the Year gong, while Abta was named Travel Brand of the Year – Established at Monday’s ceremony (3 July), with Black Tomato earning Travel Brand of the Year – Challenger.
Finn Partners, meanwhile, won the coveted PR Agency of the Year award. Finn was also recognised for its work with MDSG on Destination DC’s mural in London’s Shoreditch, which won the Out of Home category, and for the Jonathan Turns 190 campaign for St Helena Tourism, which took top spot in the PR Campaign – up to £50,000 Spend category.
Adventure touring specialists G Adventures and Intrepid Travel both triumphed at the ceremony at the Hilton London Bankside, hosted by comedian Ed Byrne – G for its When was the last time you felt like this? campaign with Accord Marketing (Advertising Campaign – up to £250,000 Media Spend) and Intrepid for topping the Marketing Responsible and Sustainable Tourism category.
The Travel Marketing Awards’ first-ever Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Campaign award, sponsored by TTG Media, was awarded to Kent Downs AONB for its Up the Kent Downs (Muslim Hikers Coastal Trek) campaign, created in partnership with Vivid. The runner-up was the Malta Tourism Authority for its LGBT campaign with OutThere magazine.
The Kent Downs campaign attracted more than 150 Muslim hikers and reached 26,000 people on social media. The judges said it engaged the Muslim community to successfully promote inclusive and sustainable access to the countryside, and also helped reach out to local asylum seekers.

Carrick also used his address to reflect on some of the changes to which press, PR and marketing teams, agencies and firms working in the travel space were having to adapt, such as striking a balance between "greenwashing" and "greenhushing" owing to the "heightened focus" on sustainability messaging and its growing significance.
Other topics addressed by Carrick included the rapid advent and adoption of AI and its implications for marketing; the cost of living crisis; and the ongoing war in Ukraine, which he said was preventing some participation in travel marketing.
Matt Roclawski, TTG Media managing director, added he was delighted to announce the new DEI award as part of TTG Media's mission to build a smarter, better, fairer travel industry. "We're all on this journey together – by putting DEI at the centre of our businesses, our campaigns and travel experiences, we are going to achieve great things together," said Roclawski.
The 32 categories spanned advertising, marketing, sponsorship and branding across consumer and trade media, extending to audio advertising, brochures, digital, social media influencer marketing, video, film and TV, event stunt/experiential efforts.
TruTravels triumphed in the Affinity Marketing and Sponsorship category with its Community Brand Partnerships campaign, which the judges said established the brand as a market leader in the UK female travel community, and achieved a 1,627% sales uplift.
The top B2B Campaign went to the Youth Hostels Association's Schools Marketing Campaign with the Education Company, an effort that attracted more than 200 new schools to book with the YHA against a target of 150 and helped secure bookings worth more than £1.9 million versus a target of £900,000.
The Brand Launch / Relaunch award went to One Black Bear for the launch of National Express Leisure's new trade-friendly coach touring brand Touromo, while The Kuoni Magazine – designed by O&G – was celebrated in the Customer Magazine category.
Other brands winning praise for their marketing efforts, in partnership with agencies and creatives, included Butlin's (Vivid), Tourism Northern Ireland (Jago Communications), Canary Islands Tourism (Proximity), the San Francisco Travel Association (MMGY Hills Balfour), Cunard (Shook), Icelandair (Fleishman Hillard), Ljubljana Tourism (DD Studios), IceLolly.com (Designate) and VisitGuernsey (TPA).
Also speaking at the awards, Stu Kaley, CIM director of customer experience and digital, paid tribute to the "innovation, creativity and marketing excellence" on display across a wide range of travel marketing disciplines, lauding travel marketers for being "some of our best and brightest creative minds".
Kaley said this year's entrants had embraced new technologies to create unique and inspiring campaigns that spoke to consumers hearts, minds and wallets.

Compliance status
We firmly believe that the internet should be available and accessible to anyone, and are committed to providing a website that is accessible to the widest possible audience, regardless of circumstance and ability.
To fulfill this, we aim to adhere as strictly as possible to the World Wide Web Consortium’s (W3C) Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.1 (WCAG 2.1) at the AA level. These guidelines explain how to make web content accessible to people with a wide array of disabilities. Complying with those guidelines helps us ensure that the website is accessible to all people: blind people, people with motor impairments, visual impairment, cognitive disabilities, and more.
This website utilizes various technologies that are meant to make it as accessible as possible at all times. We utilize an accessibility interface that allows persons with specific disabilities to adjust the website’s UI (user interface) and design it to their personal needs.
Additionally, the website utilizes an AI-based application that runs in the background and optimizes its accessibility level constantly. This application remediates the website’s HTML, adapts Its functionality and behavior for screen-readers used by the blind users, and for keyboard functions used by individuals with motor impairments.
If you’ve found a malfunction or have ideas for improvement, we’ll be happy to hear from you. You can reach out to the website’s operators by using the following email
Screen-reader and keyboard navigation
Our website implements the ARIA attributes (Accessible Rich Internet Applications) technique, alongside various different behavioral changes, to ensure blind users visiting with screen-readers are able to read, comprehend, and enjoy the website’s functions. As soon as a user with a screen-reader enters your site, they immediately receive a prompt to enter the Screen-Reader Profile so they can browse and operate your site effectively. Here’s how our website covers some of the most important screen-reader requirements, alongside console screenshots of code examples:
Screen-reader optimization: we run a background process that learns the website’s components from top to bottom, to ensure ongoing compliance even when updating the website. In this process, we provide screen-readers with meaningful data using the ARIA set of attributes. For example, we provide accurate form labels; descriptions for actionable icons (social media icons, search icons, cart icons, etc.); validation guidance for form inputs; element roles such as buttons, menus, modal dialogues (popups), and others. Additionally, the background process scans all the website’s images and provides an accurate and meaningful image-object-recognition-based description as an ALT (alternate text) tag for images that are not described. It will also extract texts that are embedded within the image, using an OCR (optical character recognition) technology. To turn on screen-reader adjustments at any time, users need only to press the Alt+1 keyboard combination. Screen-reader users also get automatic announcements to turn the Screen-reader mode on as soon as they enter the website.
These adjustments are compatible with all popular screen readers, including JAWS and NVDA.
Keyboard navigation optimization: The background process also adjusts the website’s HTML, and adds various behaviors using JavaScript code to make the website operable by the keyboard. This includes the ability to navigate the website using the Tab and Shift+Tab keys, operate dropdowns with the arrow keys, close them with Esc, trigger buttons and links using the Enter key, navigate between radio and checkbox elements using the arrow keys, and fill them in with the Spacebar or Enter key.Additionally, keyboard users will find quick-navigation and content-skip menus, available at any time by clicking Alt+1, or as the first elements of the site while navigating with the keyboard. The background process also handles triggered popups by moving the keyboard focus towards them as soon as they appear, and not allow the focus drift outside it.
Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.
Disability profiles supported in our website
- Epilepsy Safe Mode: this profile enables people with epilepsy to use the website safely by eliminating the risk of seizures that result from flashing or blinking animations and risky color combinations.
- Visually Impaired Mode: this mode adjusts the website for the convenience of users with visual impairments such as Degrading Eyesight, Tunnel Vision, Cataract, Glaucoma, and others.
- Cognitive Disability Mode: this mode provides different assistive options to help users with cognitive impairments such as Dyslexia, Autism, CVA, and others, to focus on the essential elements of the website more easily.
- ADHD Friendly Mode: this mode helps users with ADHD and Neurodevelopmental disorders to read, browse, and focus on the main website elements more easily while significantly reducing distractions.
- Blindness Mode: this mode configures the website to be compatible with screen-readers such as JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver, and TalkBack. A screen-reader is software for blind users that is installed on a computer and smartphone, and websites must be compatible with it.
- Keyboard Navigation Profile (Motor-Impaired): this profile enables motor-impaired persons to operate the website using the keyboard Tab, Shift+Tab, and the Enter keys. Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.
Additional UI, design, and readability adjustments
- Font adjustments – users, can increase and decrease its size, change its family (type), adjust the spacing, alignment, line height, and more.
- Color adjustments – users can select various color contrast profiles such as light, dark, inverted, and monochrome. Additionally, users can swap color schemes of titles, texts, and backgrounds, with over seven different coloring options.
- Animations – person with epilepsy can stop all running animations with the click of a button. Animations controlled by the interface include videos, GIFs, and CSS flashing transitions.
- Content highlighting – users can choose to emphasize important elements such as links and titles. They can also choose to highlight focused or hovered elements only.
- Audio muting – users with hearing devices may experience headaches or other issues due to automatic audio playing. This option lets users mute the entire website instantly.
- Cognitive disorders – we utilize a search engine that is linked to Wikipedia and Wiktionary, allowing people with cognitive disorders to decipher meanings of phrases, initials, slang, and others.
- Additional functions – we provide users the option to change cursor color and size, use a printing mode, enable a virtual keyboard, and many other functions.
Browser and assistive technology compatibility
We aim to support the widest array of browsers and assistive technologies as possible, so our users can choose the best fitting tools for them, with as few limitations as possible. Therefore, we have worked very hard to be able to support all major systems that comprise over 95% of the user market share including Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Apple Safari, Opera and Microsoft Edge, JAWS and NVDA (screen readers).
Notes, comments, and feedback
Despite our very best efforts to allow anybody to adjust the website to their needs. There may still be pages or sections that are not fully accessible, are in the process of becoming accessible, or are lacking an adequate technological solution to make them accessible. Still, we are continually improving our accessibility, adding, updating and improving its options and features, and developing and adopting new technologies. All this is meant to reach the optimal level of accessibility, following technological advancements. For any assistance, please reach out to

This comprehensive guide, accessible at https://www.visittopeka.com/plan/visitors-guide/ , has significantly enriched the visitor experience by providing valuable information about the Topeka community, its events, attractions, amenities, and more! The team at Visit Topeka has demonstrated a commitment to inclusivity and accessibility, making it easier for a broader audience to explore and enjoy all that this vibrant destination has to offer. Their dedication and excellence in this endeavor have rightfully earned them this award.
These three winners have not only excelled in their respective categories but have also set an inspirational standard for marketing within the travel industry. As marketing award judge Katie Olson, Assistant Professor of Advertising & Public Relations at the A.Q. Miller School of Media and Communication at Kansas State University highlighted, “It truly is a pleasure to get together with diverse industry professionals to review and reflect upon what everyone in the state of Kansas is doing to promote travel and tourism. It’s fun to see how the different areas are using exciting creative strategies to promote Kansas, and I love that I can stay in touch with this area of the industry and speak to the trends in my classes!
Additionally, Karen Crane, 2023 Marketing Committee Chair commented “The TIAK marketing awards are always a highlight of the tourism conference and provide attendees with great ideas for consideration in their future marketing campaigns, events, and promotions. We are fortunate to have a well-established program with capable and dedicated judges, amazing and inspiring entries, and a committee that works hard to make sure the awards program runs smoothly. It is my privilege to have served as the chair of this great committee alongside Allison Calvin and Christina Hayes.”
In 2024, Christina Hayes with the Great Bend CVB will take the reigns of the marketing committee!

>> Here are some changes coming to the awards program in 2024
- Events — You can’t submit a conference for consideration unless you’re the official organizer or creator of that conference. In other words, you can only submit conferences/events that you’ve actually been responsible for creating. (Example: you may not enter the Society for American Travel Journalists conference/convention because that conference belongs to SATJ and your community only bids to receive it and assists with hosting).
- Analytics – We’re going to create a dedicated section for marketing analytics in each entry. The judges find it valuable to have access to data related to the entry, such as the number of attendees, economic impact, reach, and distribution numbers. This additional space is being added because we have a word limit for the entry description, and we want to ensure this important information can be included.
- Entries must have already happened or already been released. For example, if you create a campaign that got delayed or hasn’t taken place yet, you cannot submit it until you have actually run the campaign. Similarly, if you’re organizing an event, like a Halloween gathering which is currently being marketed for the present year, make sure to include the details of the previous year’s event. This is necessary because the event must have occurred before it can be evaluated for any awards. We can’t recognize or reward an event or campaign that hasn’t actually happened yet.

Eclipse expected to cause travel chaos; here’s how to navigate the roads and skies
(CNN) - Millions of Americans are expected to travel to see the total solar eclipse on April 8. Cities and towns along the route of totality are expecting big crowds.
While the boost in visitors is good for local economies, the extra people are expected to cause chaos on the roads and in the skies.
“You really need to plan ahead to be safe,” said Elizabeth Carey, director of public relations for AAA Western and Central New York.
Communities from Mexico to Canada are in the path of totality, meaning the moon will completely cover the sun, creating total darkness during daylight. Some areas like western New York are expecting a million visitors.
AAA has several tips for drivers like navigating the old-fashioned way with a map, especially if you’re traveling in less populated areas.
“In a very rural area, you’re talking about wilderness with no cell service,” Carey said.
AAA also recommends drivers not try and watch the eclipse while driving, have their headlights on, don’t wear eclipse glasses while driving, and watch out for animals.
“It could trigger wildlife to be out and about,” said Carey.
If you’re flying, the Federal Aviation Administration is warning travelers to expect long lines and possible delays at airports. Monday’s eclipse falls during the busy spring break travel season.
The FAA says they’re expecting more than 46,000 flights the day after the eclipse.

Katy Perry knows how to heat things up!
The singer walked the 11th annual 2024 iHeartRadio Music Awards yellow carpet in a barely there look.
Leaning into her daring style, Perry wore an ensemble consisting of a mesh dress — which showed off her black bra and underwear— tied together with red bows and paired with knee-high scrunchy boots.
Perry, 39, who is presenting at Monday's awards show, accessorized with a pair of black sunglasses. She completed the look with gorgeous wavy hair and natural makeup with a smoky eye.
