The History of the “Top Gun“ House

Contributing Writer: Kristi Hawthorne

Oceanside has several notable landmarks including the Pier and the historic Mission San Luis Rey.  However, one of the most notable and beloved landmarks is what we know as the “Top Gun” House. It has been newly restored, in all its Victorian-detailed glory, nestled within a new oceanfront resort on North Pacific Street.

To tell the story of the “Top Gun” house, we need to go back to the earliest days of Oceanside. Andrew Jackson Myers, a rancher in the San Luis Rey Valley, noted that a railroad line had just been completed Los Angeles to San Diego (by way of Riverside) along the Pacific coastline. Myers then applied for and received a land grant of 160 acres in 1883. The trains would travel directly over Myers’ new land grant making his property very valuable.

That year, a town was surveyed, laid out and streets were named. Myers began advertising his new town in newspapers all over Southern California. This new town of Oceanside was touted as a new “resort city” and excursion trains brought prospective land buyers from the inland valleys.

The train stopped at a simple wooden platform to unload passengers. There wasn’t much to see in those very early years, but one of the first commercial blocks contained the Hayes Land Office, the Louis Billiard Hall and Mayroffer’s Saloon.

Visitors wishing to wade in the Pacific Oceanside could use the bathhouse built by Andrew Jackson Myers, just below the bluff on the beach (located where the current Beach Community Center now stands) which afforded beach goers the opportunity to change into their bathing attire.

Described as a “seaside resort” in brochures and pamphlets, interest in the new town was great. With a name like “Oceanside” there was truth in advertising.  In August of 1886 the San Diego Union published a story about our development, “ The location is a most desirable one, combining a magnificent beach, high and level ground for a town site, magnificent climate and charming scenery.”

The trains came from Los Angeles to Oceanside via Colton and passengers came to Oceanside as early as 1883 and 1884 to inspect the burgeoning town and invest in ocean and beach front real estate. Many residents of Riverside, Redlands and San Bernardino purchased property in Oceanside and built vacation homes here.

In 1886 Dr. Henry Graves of Riverside came to Oceanside and while here bought a portion of a lot on North Pacific Street for just $1.00.  The following year Graves purchased two more lots, one of which was on the northwest corner of Pacific and First Streets (now Seagaze Drive). Lot 7 on Block 16 was purchased for $1050.00 and would be the site of a new summer home for himself and his wife Sarah.

Henry Graves was born in Coshocton, Ohio on February 10, 1827. He attended medical school in Iowa, and later moved to Middleport, Illinois where he opened a practice in 1857. By 1860 Henry had married his wife Sarah, who was born in 1833, and was also a native of Ohio. The two were living in Hiawatha, Kansas and lived in house on Kickapoo Street. In 1868, Sarah Graves gave birth to a son, Henry E. Graves.

Graves was Post Surgeon at the Whetsone Indian Agency in 1871 as well as the Spotted Tail Agency in Sheridan County, Nebraska in 1871. The latter agency was the first to be constructed within the Great Sioux Reservation established by a treaty in 1868 and was named for Brule Sioux Chief Spotted Tail.

Returning to Hiawatha, Graves was appointed postmaster in1875 and operated a drugstore. In 1879 Henry Graves was elected to the city council there and was appointed chairman of the Republicans of Brown County committee. In 1883, Henry and Sarah Graves left Hiawatha, Kansas, and moved to Riverside, California where they purchased a ranch on Brockton Avenue. He continued his medical practice there but also engaged in citrus farming.

The ornate Victorian cottage was built as a vacation home, Dr. and Mrs. Graves would “summer” in Oceanside and return to Riverside.  The local paper described it is “their annual vacation by the seaside.” The couple continued to visit Oceanside each year. In 1904 they had an extended stay as the Oceanside Blade reported on May 21, 1904: “Dr. and Mrs. Henry Graves [are] down from Riverside and will remain in their cottage by the seaside until October.”

The Graves sold their Oceanside home in March of 1905 for $1800, to Charles H. and Lillian Burlock. Dr. Henry Graves died on October 20, 1905, in Riverside at the age of 78.

Charles Burlock was appointed deputy constable in 1897 by Benjamin Franklin Hubbert. Burlock married Lilian Wilcox in 1899 and moved to San Diego where he was the manager of the San Diego Gold Mining and Milling Company.  The Burlocks sold the house to J. F. Anderson, and it was then transferred to Southwestern Realty in 1910. But even as late as 1914, locals continued to refer to the house at the “Graves’ cottage” because of its longtime association with Dr. and Mrs. Graves.

In 1921 the home was purchased by F. C. Janssen who was active in Oceanside real estate. The cottage was sold in 1926 to B. C. and Margaret Beers, the former being the President of the First National Bank of Oceanside and the developer of the Plumosa Heights subdivision on Alberta, Leonard and West Streets.

Andrew Jackson Myers’ bathhouse

Dr. Graves undoubtedly read of Oceanside in the local papers where the excursion trips were posted and after making a trip of his own, was sold on the newly established town. Several months after purchasing his oceanfront lot atop Pacific Street, Graves had a home built. The South Oceanside Diamond reported on November 2, 1888:  “Dr. Grave’s house, under the skillful management of Ed. Durgan is nearing completion.” (Note: It has been erroneously reported for a number of years that the house was built in 1887.)

old newspaper clipping

The cottage was sold again to Edward and Edith Deggendorf in 1928, who promptly sold it to Angeline G. Morgan who also purchased a house and lot behind the Graves house on Lot 6. Born Angeline Elizabeth Gregory in 1889, she was a native of Topeka Kansas. She moved to San Bernardino, California in about 1904 with her parents Merritt and Ruth Gregory. In 1917 Angelina was married to Alfred Powell Morgan of New York City, but the marriage was short-lived, although the union produced a son, William Merritt.

Angeline Morgan enlarged the former Graves cottage in 1929. She rented out the house until 1936 when she came to live there herself for a period of about five or six years until returning to San Bernardino to be nearer to her son. She relocated again by 1950 and her son, William M. Morgan, rented the house to the rear (112 First Street) for he and his family.

By 1966 Morgan had moved to Encinitas and the cottage was purchased by the owner of the beach amusement park, Pacific Holidayland. That year, Oceanside’s only oceanfront hotel, the Colonial Inn, was torn down. It had been built as the El San Luis Rey in 1904. Plans were to build a new resort hotel which never came to fruition. For six decades Oceanside went without a resort property, although in 2007 the Wyndham (which is a timeshare) and in 2013 the Springhill Marriot were built. What is a resort city without a resort hotel?

The Graves house reverted again to a rental property and over the years became dilapidated. Lynn and William Rego of West Covina, however, saw a diamond in the rough, and purchased the house in December of 1975 for $75,000. Much like Dr. and Mrs. Graves, they spent their summers in Oceanside looking over the blue waters of the Pacific Ocean and renting it out the remainder of the year.

The Graves house, circa 1940s

For over 90 years the house had been painted in dark hues, which is discernible even when viewing the house in black and white photos. Years ago, the original brown color was revealed in paint scrapings.  It was the Regos who painted the house its signature blue color that most remember. Little did they know that Hollywood would notice their little blue Victorian cottage by the sea.

In 1985 the Regos were contacted by Paramount Pictures looking for a beach cottage for a film location. Paramount rented the house (including the property at 112 First Street) in June for two weeks. The crew prepped the perimeter of the property by removing parking and street signs and covering the curbs with sand.  The movie being filmed was “Top Gun”, which became a blockbuster upon its release in 1986.

The movie made Tom Cruise a household name and the iconic scene of Maverick riding his motorcycle on palm-lined Pacific Street in Oceanside is every local’s favorite. Certainly, for Oceansiders some of the most memorable scenes of the movie “Top Gun” were filmed at the Victorian cottage, which was the featured as the home of Cruise’s love interest, flight instructor Charlie, played by Kelly McGillis.

Thereafter, it would forever be Oceanside’s “Top Gun” house. Fans of the movie from all over the world flocked to have their photo taken in front of the iconic house and stand on the porch.

In 1992 the Graves house was included in a Cultural Resource Survey prepared by S. Kathleen Flanigan along with Susan and Richard Carrico. This survey is an extensive list of homes and buildings eligible for historic register.  It was noted that the house at 102 North Pacific Street was “one of the few 1880s beach cottages remaining in near-pristine condition.”

In 2001 the City of Oceanside acquired the Graves house through eminent domain to control future development of the oceanfront block in hopes of securing a resort project. Save Our Heritage Organization (SOHO) recognized the significance of the Graves house in 2001 and included it on their Most Endangered List of Historic Resources, saying: “ This sweet Victorian era seaside cottage was built for Doctor Graves from Riverside. It is the oldest and last best beachfront cottage in Oceanside. Featured in the movie Top Gun, it has consequently been known as the Top Gun Cottage. The site is threatened by the huge hotel development proposed by Manchester Resort Hotels and the City of Oceanside. The cottage is on a corner of the property and could easily be integrated into the development and used as an adjunct facility to the hotel. Right now, it appears it will be moved off site, out of context, with its use yet to be determined .”

The Manchester project, a twelve-story, 475-room hotel failed, leaving Oceanside without its desired resort hotel overlooking the Oceanside Pier. However, two blocks fronting Pacific Street were cleared in anticipation of a new hotel project. Block 16 on which the Top Gun house was located, had four other historic homes. The house known as the Pishon house, located on the southwest corner of Mission and Pacific Streets was moved to a location on Maxson Street. Three other historic houses were demolished, including the house behind the Graves house, at 112 First Street (now Seagaze) which was used in the “Top Gun” movie.

By 2010 the “Top Gun” house was the only structure remaining on the block and seemed to be in the “Danger Zone.” With the house vacant, members of the Oceanside Historical Society kept an eye on it for several years, reporting break-ins and other issues. Twice the organization helped to hoist the sagging porches, had it painted and erected a large sign to inform passersby about the historical significance of the house and to assure those concerned that the house would be restored. In 2009 a fence was put up around the property, which was necessary to protect the house from further intentional damage.

In 2018 S. D. Malkin Properties, Inc. announced two new resort projects by developer Jeremy Cohen. Many wondered what would become of the “Top Gun” house. With the support and influence of Save Our Heritage Organization and the Oceanside Historical Society, the Graves house aka “Top Gun” house would be restored by S. D. Malkin and used as the “centerpiece of Oceanside’s much anticipated new oceanfront resort.”

Groundbreaking ceremonies for the new hotels were held in February of 2019. The cottage was relocated one block away for structural restoration. Curious residents peeked through the fencing to view its progress.

Afterward much of the work had been completed, it was moved one block north of its original location in front of the beautiful new Mission Pacific Hotel. The cottage is still situated on North Pacific Street, facing the ocean, which was important in preserving its historical integrity and setting. There was still work to be done to the cottage at its new location, but brief glimpses made way to a “full reveal” as it reemerged to its adoring fans. Architectural Digest reported: “Among the projects were restoring the wood cladding and front windows, dismantling the original chimney, and rebuilding it with the same historic bricks, and bringing back gingerbread details. Both porches had also been damaged and were restored.” Beautifully painted the cottage has been reborn and to borrow from the movie’s famous love song, it’s sure to take your “breath away.”

Original fireplace and mantel

The beloved “Top Gun” House celebrated its much-anticipated grand opening on May 20, 2022, as the home of the High-Pie Shop, which is filled with memorabilia from the hit movie. Just days later was the release of the long-awaited sequel “Top Gun: Maverick” starring Tom Cruise. To the delight of movie fans, a replica motorcycle like the one Maverick rode on his iconic scene in Oceanside, was placed in front of the house Lines now form around the house to view the interior and purchase a pie. People pose on the front porch for selfies and group shots and pretend to be Maverick on his bike.

With two new beautiful hotels, Oceanside has regained or fulfilled its resort status, envisioned so many years ago by our founder Andrew Jackson Myers. The careful restoration of the historic Graves House, aka the “Top Gun” house is a crowning jewel on the oceanfront.  It is sure to hold a place in the hearts of locals as well as movie fans for many years to come.

The Top Gun House Is Now a Stylish Restaurant—See Inside

A Queen Anne cottage featured prominently in the 1986 film Top Gun has been freshly restored just in time for the May 24 release of Top Gun: Maverick . Only it’s not been revamped for someone to live in. Built in 1887, the Graves House is one of the oldest homes in the San Diego area, and it now has a new life as the High Pie at the Top Gun House, a dessert-driven eatery at Mission Pacific Hotel in Oceanside, California. It opens for the first time this weekend with chef Tara Lazar of F10 Hospitality (also behind Cheeky’s restaurant and the Alcazar hotel in Palm Springs, California) at the helm. What inspired the High Pie name is Lazar’s signature “high pie” dish: a fried fruit-filled hand pie topped with mascarpone ice cream.

Artist Mary Lou Marks works with fabrics and tapestries from the 1800s and early 1900s to create pieces like the cow’s head above the fireplace.

Several scenes in the original Top Gun, featuring Kelly McGillis and Tom Cruise, were filmed in the house. “Prior to restoration, the vacant house was in a serious state of disrepair,” says Jeremy Cohen, senior vice president of S.D. Malkin Properties, the hotel’s ownership group. “Luckily, there were two old photos that showed the house before it was altered that provided guidance for the architect and contractor to accurately reconstruct all of the missing 1887 details.” Cohen collaborated with David Marshall, president of Heritage Architecture & Planning, and Frank Ternasky of Delawie Architects while staying true to the home’s historic roots.

Restoring the bungalow-style cottage was a labor of love. First, it had to be relocated two blocks from its original site, at Pacific Street and Seagaze Drive, to a temporary work site for structural repair before finding its new home in the hotel’s courtyard overlooking the Oceanside Pier. Among the projects were restoring the wood cladding and front windows, dismantling the original chimney, and rebuilding it with the same historic bricks, and bringing back gingerbread details. Both porches had also been damaged and were restored.

Once at the hotel, the exterior was painted white and sky blue, with a red door to look like it had in Top Gun. Movie memorabilia was arranged throughout the interiors, modernized by Nicolò G. Bini at Line Architecture, whose past projects include Cara Delevingne’s home. Bini worked closely with the Oceanside Historical Society and Save Our Heritage Organization. A whitewashed background (particularly the fireplace, built-ins, panels, and moldings) is punched up with framed Victorian-era art along with needlepoint upholstery from artist Mary Lou Marks of Round Top, Texas. Her work can be seen on bar stools and the fireplace, where a faux cow’s head is mounted above and, instead of wooden logs, there are plush fiber versions within. Vintage furnishings, octopus-themed wallpaper, and vertical blue-and-white stripes surrounding the bar add further visual interest.

As yet another nod to Top Gun , a refurbished Yamaha Kawasaki Ninja ZX900 motorcycle just like Cruise’s in the movie is an Instagram-perfect prop for guests.

Top Gun house

With the release of “ Top Gun : Maverick,” moviegoers everywhere are excited to revisit the San Diego area onscreen for more adventures from Tom Cruise’s Maverick. Although moviegoers won’t be getting back together with Cruise’s love interest Charlie, played by Kelly McGillis, visitors to Oceanside, Calif. can now visit the site of her cute cottage — and eat some pie while they’re there.

In the original film, flight instructor Charlie lived in an adorable oceanfront Victorian known as the Graves house that was so sweet, she even stayed there during filming. The petite 1887 cottage has now been moved a few hundred feet from its original location to the grounds of Oceanside’s recently-opened Mission Pacific Resort, where it houses High Pie, a “Top Gun”-themed pie shop along the beachfront promenade. Developers S.D Malkin committed to save the house while constructing the beach resort, restoring the dilapidated bungalow to its original sky blue color.

On a recent afternoon, tourists were lining up in front of the newly-opened cottage to taste the apple and cherry mini hand pies ahead of the “ Top Gun: Maverick ‘s” release. High Pie was conceived by Tara Lazar of F10 Creative, the group behind Palm Springs favorites like Cheeky’s and Mr. Lyons. Why pie? “I decided on pie because I feel it personifies Americana at its finest. Just like ‘Top Gun,’ the military, Victorian architecture — pie feels like a great common denominator to bring these American adorations together,” Lazar says.

Decorated with photos of Maverick and Charlie, antiques and vintage art and furniture, High Pie also offers ice cream-stuffed hand pies, cherry soda and apple kombucha. The pies are gluten free, and can be served with sauces like sea salt caramel and lemon curd.

Lazar is also behind High/Low restaurant, the oceanfront spot on the ground floor of the Mission Pacific. Cheeky’s fans will appreciate the “wave of bacon,” and High/Low’s hearty breakfasts and lunches break through beach fog with spicy BLTs, fried chicken sandwiches and crispy Hawaiian fried rice.

In the evening, the hotel’s upscale Valle Restaurant combines a deep selection of wines from Baja’s up-and-coming Valle de Guadalupe region with a modern Mexican tasting menu from Roberto Alcocer, chef at Baja’s Malva.

Just across the street, sister hotel Seabird is all nautical charm and cheery reds, blues and yellows as opposed to Mission Pacific’s groovy earth tones. As at Mission Pacific, the hotel provides surfboard storage, the better to take advantage of Oceanside’s reliable, beginner-friendly swells. For a special dinner, let the ebullient chef at Seabird’s Piper Restaurant explain the nood-focused tasting menu at the pasta bar. A full-service spa, children’s activities and art program featuring works by local visual artists round out the resort’s offerings.

With its long military history, Oceanside hasn’t always been top of mind for beach vacations. But the unpretentious town is just two hours from L.A. — even easier on the train — with a burgeoning art and restaurant scene. Visitors can check out the California Surf Museum and the Oceanside Museum of Art, which is housed in an original building from noted architect Irving Gill, who designed several other 1920s-era buildings in the historic center.

When in Oceanside, come for pie at the “Top Gun” house, stay for the surf and ocean views.

The History Behind The House

An oceanside victorian becomes a hollywood landmark.

As a historical gem in Oceanside, the Top Gun House is known by history buffs as The Graves House – named for its original owner Dr. Henry Graves who enjoyed the beautiful Victorian as his vacation home in the late 1800s. When Paramount was seeking the perfect location for Top Gun character Charlie Blackwood’s residence, the studio settled on the historical Graves House as the ideal filming spot. In the last year, the home has been repainted to match its 1986 color palette and filled with Top Gun memorabilia for visitors to enjoy, including a refurbished Yamaha Kawasaki Ninja ZX900 Motorcycle, identical to the one Tom Cruise rode in the film!

You Can Visit the House From "Top Gun" and Get the Full Pilot Experience

Published on 10/12/2022 at 6:45 PM

tom cruise top gun house

Calling all " Top Gun " fans — you can now visit the iconic house from the original 1986 movie. Located at the Mission Pacific Hotel in Oceanside, CA, the newly renovated 1887 beachfront bungalow, which was once home to Maverick's (Tom Cruise) love interest Charlie (Kelly McGillis), has been turned into a retro dessert bar called High Pie , and it's overflowing with nostalgia.

While fans of the beloved film will flock to take photos on top of the Yamaha Kawasaki Ninja ZX900 motorcycle parked in front of the home (it's an exact replica of the one Maverick rides to see Charlie in the movie) and obsess over all the "Top Gun" memorabilia located throughout, they'll end up staying for the fresh hand pies (all gluten-free, by the way) being baked inside with locally picked fruits like apple, cherry, blueberry, and my personal favorite, strawberry rhubarb. And if you're feeling adventurous, the menu also features a mini pie à la mode with homemade mascarpone ice cream, as well as several dipping sauces, including Charlie's chocolate, government cheese, lemon curd, and sea salt caramel.

Previously known as The Graves House, the "Top Gun" House is a Queen Anne cottage that was originally built in 1887 by Dr. Henry Graves as a vacation home. However, it was later renamed after Cruise and McGillis used it to film scenes for the movie in 1985. It was also relocated from its original address at Pacific Street and Seagaze Drive to the Mission Pacific Hotel, where it now overlooks the stunning Oceanside Pier.

In addition to having dessert at High-Pie, you can get the full "Top Gun" pilot experience for the hefty price of $16,000 with the hotel's "Need For Speed" package . The once-in-a-lifetime experience includes an action-filled weekend of private surf lessons with a professional surfer and skydiving with former Naval aviators, followed by a Dom Perignon rooftop celebration. Guests will receive two matching bomber jackets and Ray-Ban sunglasses, as well as a custom commemorative David Barr surfboard. The package also includes round-trip luxury car service from San Diego or Orange County airports and a two-night stay in Mission Pacific's Ethereal Suite.

The Mission Pacific Hotel, which was recently named one of Condé Nast Traveler's top hotels in Southern California, is also home to restaurants Valle , High/Low , and The Rooftop Bar , which is definitely a must visit if you're ever in town. High Pie at the "Top Gun" house is open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily. Ahead, see photos of what you can expect when you visit the "Top Gun" house, aka High Pie.

Oceanside’s ‘Top Gun’ house reopens as nostalgic pie shop

For much of the past 36 years, Oceanside’s famous “Top Gun” house has been boarded up and moved from place to place as the city’s downtown waterfront exploded with growth.

But on Friday, the 135-year-old Victorian cottage that was featured in the 1986 Tom Cruise film “Top Gun,” celebrated its new permanent home and occupant. Now situated in an oceanfront lot on the grounds of the year-old Mission Pacific Hotel at 201 N. Myers St., the Top Gun House is now home to HIGH-pie, a nostalgic Americana-inspired pie shop.

On Friday afternoon, a line of customers snaked out the door and down the sidewalk of the shop, which sells fried-to-order hand pies filled with apple or cherry compote and “a la mode” hand pies filled with mascarpone ice cream. The pies are served on a popsicle stick with optional dipping sauces including salted caramel and lemon curd. The shop also sells coffee and other drinks and souvenir T-shirts and hats.

Workers prepare the new pie shop counter in Oceanside's "Top Gun" house.

Inside, the cottage is decorated with nautical wallpaper, paintings and needlepoint art of fishing boats and Navy aircraft carriers and posters and photos of Cruise and the movie “Top Gun.”

HIGH-pie is the brainchild of Palm Springs hospitality company owner Tara Lazar. In her native Palm Springs, Lazar owns three restaurants, two bars, a catering company and a hotel.

Before starting her business, F/10, Lazar worked as a trader on the options floor of the stock exchange in San Francisco. When her father became ill, she moved back to Palm Springs to help care for him in 2006 and began working from home as a day trader. She and her husband, commercial real estate businessman Marco Rossetti, always loved restaurants, and opening her own restaurant was always a dream.

“I loved breakfast and my friends would come and visit and we wouldn’t have places to take them, so I got the idea I should open a breakfast place. I started losing more and more money sitting in front of my computer and decided if I’m going to lose money, I might as well go into the restaurant business.”

In 2008, she opened Cheeky’s, a brunch-centric Palm Springs restaurant where everything is made from scratch using locally sourced ingredients and the menu changes weekly. Since then, she has also opened a steakhouse, an Italian restaurant, a cocktail bar, a tiki bar and a catering company. She also owns Alcazar, a 34-room boutique hotel.

For several years, Lazar said she wanted to break into the restaurant business in San Diego, but she struggled to find the right space. Then she connected with S.D. Malkin Properties, the Connecticut-based global retail investment company that built the Mission Pacific Hotel and the adjacent Seabird Resort, which both opened in 2021. Founder Scott Malkin is a fan of “Top Gun,” so as part of the development deal for the 2.75-acre oceanfront property he offered to give the peripatetic Top Gun House a place to stay and a facelift.

Originally known as the Graves house because of its original owner, Dr. Henry Graves, the 500-square-foot house was one of several cottages built along Pacific Street in downtown Oceanside in the 1880s. Over the years, as the downtown commercial district grew, all of the other cottages were torn down. According to local historians, the Graves house had historical merit because of its age and Folk Victorian architectural style, which is more commonly seen in San Francisco and the Pacific Northwest. As a result, the city purchased the house in the 1980s to protect it from demolition.

Meanwhile, in 1986, “Top Gun” was released to global acclaim. Tom Cruise starred in the movie as a cocky San Diego-based Navy pilot. The Graves house was featured in one scene of the film as the home of Cruise’s onscreen girlfriend, played by actress Kelly McGillis.

In 2019, the home was hoisted up and moved a few blocks away to make way for the hotel’s construction. With the consultation of the Oceanside Historical Society and Save Our Heritage Organisation, S.D. Malkin Properties spent nearly $1 million restoring the home to its original design with a new chimney, refreshed roof and re-creation of its ornate gingerbread filigree along the roofline and porches.

Malkin first hired Lazar to develop the menu for the High/Low café at Mission Pacific Hotel, which she described as a healthier take on the breakfasts surfers eat around the world, like Hawaiian fried rice, Australian corn fritters and Southern California breakfast burritos, but with house-made Spam and American-style cheese.

Lazar said her concept for HIGH-pie is tied closely to the movie “Top Gun,” American patriotism, the military and the ocean. Because of the shop’s small size, a dessert concept worked best for the space, and Lazar said she knew Scott Malkin was a fan of apple pie. So is she.

“I loved the McDonald’s apple pies growing up. I wanted to re-create that in a really nutritious, recognizable-ingredient kind of way, using old-fashioned butter, cup-for-cup flour that’s gluten-free and fillings that are very clean ingredients, like cherry, almond extract and sugar.”

The shop will host a grand-opening event on May 20, five days before a sequel, “Top Gun: Maverick,” opens in cinemas.

Managed locally by Elijiah Alexander, HIGH-pie is open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily. The menu can be found at famoushighpie.com .

The Victorian cottage sits next to a new hotel in Oceanside.

An old-fashioned cottage turned pie shop.

Immortalized in the first Top Gun film, where it stood in as the oceanfront home of Charlotte “Charlie” Blackwood, the love interest of Tom Cruise’s LT Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, the historic Graves House is stepping into its next act as a retro pie shop and bakery in downtown Oceanside.

High-Pie retains the nostalgic charm of the Victorian cottage, which was built in the 1880s. Relocated from its original spot down the street, the 500-square-foot house was restored as a feature of the pierside Mission Pacific Hotel and the Seabird Resort complex.

It’s the second local venture for hospitality pro Tara Lazar of F10 Creative , known for popular Palm Springs haunts Mr. Lyon’s Steakhouse, Seymour’s, and Birba as well as chic boutique hotel Alcazar. Lazar, who founded Cheeky’s, one of the desert resort city’s brunch bastions, also operates Mission Pacific’s daytime restaurant called High/Low.

Decorated with vintage furnishings and historical images of the Oceanside area, with set photos from Top Gun paying tribute to the building’s previous on-screen role, the pie shop will showcase its treats on a Willy Wonka-esque conveyor belt. The sweet and streamlined menu revolves around classic fried hand pies in seasonal fruit flavors like apple or cherry and mini pies a la mode filled with house-made mascarpone ice cream. Served on a stick for maximum portability, the ice cream-filled pies will be offered with dipping sauces ranging from chocolate and lemon curd to sea salt caramel.

Fried pies with retro packaging.

Open daily, High-Pie will also serve hot coffee as well as specialty drinks like apple kombucha, cherry cider, and New Orleans-style iced coffee sweetened with condensed milk.

Lazar, who tells Eater that she’d like to develop more projects in the San Diego area, says she’s working on incorporating the pies into the hotel experience at Mission Pacific, from providing warm pies as a welcome gift for guests to launching a poolside pie cart. The shop will also have a vintage scooter for delivering pies to adjacent hotels.

‘Top Gun' House in Oceanside May Reopen as an Ice Cream Shop

Also known as the “graves house,” it was featured in the 1986 film when actor tom cruise arrived at the victorian-style beachfront home on his motorcycle to visit his on-screen girlfriend, by monica garske • published march 1, 2021 • updated on march 1, 2021 at 3:09 pm.

The Victorian-style home made famous in the 1986 movie, “Top Gun,” is in the process of getting a makeover and might one day reopen to the public as an ice cream shop.

The home, also known as the “Graves House,” is in Oceanside in San Diego’s North County. It was featured in the iconic Tom Cruise film as the beachfront home of Charlie, Cruise’s on-screen love interest played by actress Kelly McGillis. Fans will remember the scene when Cruise’s character, Maverick, rolls up to the house on his motorcycle. If you need a refresher, click here.

Last spring, the “Top Gun” house was carefully moved from its original location on South Pacific Street over to the Oceanside Beach Resort across from the Oceanside Pier.

S.D. Malkin Properties broke ground on two adjacent resort developments in the area in 2019 and acquired the historic house. You can read about the developments here.

The City of Oceanside told NBC 7 the house is now being renovated as part of the project.

"As a condition of the approval of the hotel resorts, the developer was required to renovate the historic Graves home for use as a shop,” the City of Oceanside explained. “It may become an ice cream shop so everyone can go inside.”

The city said the Graves House may be shifted to a final spot in the development area eventually – but no word yet on where it’ll ultimately land.

According to the City of Oceanside, the adjacent beachfront resorts are slated to open to the public this spring as the Mission Pacific Hotel and The Seabird Resort.

Much of “Top Gun” was filmed in San Diego, including at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar. Kansas City Barbeque on West Harbor Drive is also a famed “Top Gun” filming location, among a few others.

Val Kilmer on the Tom Cruise 'Top Gun: Maverick' reunion, that final hug: 'Straight from the heart'

tom cruise top gun house

"Top Gun: Maverick" has thrilled record-breaking theater audiences with jet action and throwbacks to the original  "Top Gun."

But the beating heart of Tom Cruise's screen return as Pete "Maverick" Mitchell after 36 years is the emotional meeting with one-time "Top Gun" pilot rival Tom  "Iceman" Kazansky, played by Val Kilmer.

On screen, Iceman is now Admiral Kazansky , who has spent his Navy career looking after the rebellious Maverick and is near the end of his life due to an unspecified illness. The real performance comes from the two superstars who shot to worldwide fame with 1986's  "Top Gun" and are reunited in the long-awaited sequel.

Cruise, 59, has remained one of the world's last movie superstars, while the once famously mercurial leading man Kilmer, 62, battled throat cancer in the 2010s that required a tracheotomy which still greatly impacts his speaking voice.

There have been many teary eyes watching the "Maverick" reunion, including from Kilmer.

"I was very moved the first time I saw it. Almost 40 years is a long time for a reunion," Kilmer tells USA TODAY over email of the scene. "We laughed all day. Tom is great and surprisingly funny!!"

Val Kilmer begged: To be in ‘Top Gun’ sequel and other revelations from his new memoir

Secrets to 'Top Gun: Maverick':  Epic dogfight football scene needed spray tans, protein bars and panic workouts

"Maverick" director Joseph Kosinski says the scene's depth was boosted by real emotions.

"It's a long friendship. They were both there at their career beginnings with the original 'Top Gun.' I'm sure there was a little bit of a rivalry back then, just like the characters," says Kosinski. "But for both to be back in this movie, it was a really special moment. There was so much joy."

Kilmer says he was gunning for a reunion as soon as the sequel was announced three decades after the original "Top Gun."

"I called the agent immediately," Kilmer says. "Yes, 'Top Gun' has all the perfect elements for a sequel."

Kilmer, who was indifferent to earning his "Top Gun" role in his original audition, wrote In his 2020 memoir  "I’m Your Huckleberry"  that he pleaded for the "Maverick" part: "As the Temptations sang in the heyday of Motown soul, ‘ain’t too proud to beg.’ The producers went for it and Cruise went for it.' "

Kosinski says it was Kilmer who suggested the idea of Iceman serving as the high-ranking mentor, discussing the part with himself, Cruise, and producer Jerry Bruckheimer.

"It is nice to see Iceman reach such success in the career he loved," Kilmer says of his new admiral status. "It's a good story arc. And it was very exciting to be back at it with Tom."

In the scene, instructor Maverick is called to Iceman's house to discuss his pilot recruits, including Bradley "Rooster" Bradshaw (Miles Teller), the troubled pilot son of Maverick's late BFF Nick "Goose" Bradshaw (Anthony Edwards).

Kilmer, wearing a sweater and a scarf, types most of his "Maverick" dialogue to Cruise on a computer keyboard, including asking, "How's my wingman?" - a follow-up to Iceman's final line to his rival in the original, "You can be my wingman, anytime."

But as the "Maverick" scene deepens, Iceman eventually speaks, saying, "The Navy needs you Maverick, they (the pilots) need you."

The scene evolved to the speaking finale, says Kosinski. "It ends up being more powerful when (Kilmer) speaks at the end of the scene. Those words carry more weight," says Kosinski.

"It changed every day in rehearsals," says Kilmer. "They made the right choice in the end."

The final hug between the two onscreen was "straight from the heart," says Kilmer. "I love Tom. We’ve always gotten along great."

There is a moment of levity as the two argue over who was a better pilot since Iceman won the Top Gun Trophy in the original.

"One can always use a laugh," says Kilmer who makes it clear he's the ace. "There can only be one Top Gun..."

Kilmer, who starred with his daughter Mercedes in the 2020 crime drama "Pay Dirt," says he's well healthwise and looking forward to more work.

"I’m feeling strong and excited to play any chance I get," Kilmer says.

The insider concluded, “It’s a feat that is just like a scene out of one of Tom’s films.”

Tom, who plays secret agent  Ethan Hunt in the franchise and performs his own stunts, was filming in England earlier this month along with co-stars  Simon Pegg  and  Hayley Atwell .

The latest movie was due to hit cinemas this summer but has been delayed by almost a year because of the  Hollywood  actors’ strikes.

Tom has also been facing struggles in his private life as he has reportedly split from Russian socialite Elisina Khayrova .

He started dating Elsina , who is 25 years his junior, at the end of last year.

Friends revealed Tom cooled off his romance with the 36-year-old but wanted to remain friends because they live in the same apartment block in  London .

Elsina is the daughter of Russian politician Rinat Khayrov and ex-wife of a diamond-trading oligarch.

“To end things on a bad note would’ve been awkward if they bumped into each other in the lift," a source said.

"There are no hard feelings between them and, for Tom, their relationship simply ran its course.”

Tom Cruise Basically Got 'Top Gun: Maverick' Greenlit By Picking Up The Phone And Telling The Studio He Was Doing It

Posted: March 22, 2024 | Last updated: March 22, 2024

It’s become more common nowadays for popular movies to score sequels/follow-ups decades later. In fact, the most commercially successful movie of 2022 falls into this “legacyquel” category, with "Top Gun: Maverick" soaring over $1 billion worldwide on top of earning critical acclaim. So how did Tom Cruise arrange for his return to the role Pete “Maverick” Mitchell? According to producer Jerry Bruckheimer, it was as simple as calling Paramount Pictures and telling the studio he was doing it. I had the pleasure of speaking with Jerry Bruckheimer on behalf of the "Top Gun: Maverick" digital rollout. After noting how the sequel had been in development since 2010 and hit a setback when Tony Scott, the original "Top Gun’s" director who’d been slated to reprise his helming duties, died in 2012, I asked Bruckheimer at what point he and the other creative minds behind "Maverick" decided that it was still worth moving forward with the movie.

Tom Cruise in the Mission: Impossible franchise

Tom Cruise appears to have an enterprising solution at hand to this weekend’s M25 travel chaos impacting on Mission: Impossible 8’s cast and crew – fly them in to set via helicopter.

The Hollywood star and avid aviator, 61, is said to have helicopters on standby to help skirt the ‘carmageddon’ expected with massive delays as the M25 has its first-ever daytime closure over the weekend.

A five-mile stretch of the motorway between  junctions 10 and 11 is now shut  in both directions and will remain inaccessible until 6am on Monday while a bridge is demolished and new gantry installed.

Cruise and his cast and crew on the latest action blockbuster, which includes Simon Pegg, Hayley Atwell, Rebecca Ferguson and Hannah Waddingham , are reportedly filming this weekend at Surrey’s Longcross Studios.

The location is just off the M3, close to the M25 closure that has motorists being warned of up to five-hour delays on surrounding roads and the 11.5-mile diversion route.

Producer and Top Gun actor Cruise reportedly has a helipad in Battersea, southwest London, ready to be used to fly any affected cast and crew into set on Surrey, over the motorway.

It’s a spot the qualified pilot has used before , including earlier this month.

‘The M25 closure is a headache for most people but not for Tom. He is so keen to keep Mission: Impossible 8 in production that he’s got helicopters on standby in London to fly his crew over to Longcross,’ a source told The Sun .

‘It sounds excessive but delaying work on the film is a bigger problem and Tom is such a professional – he’d move heaven and Earth to keep the show on the road.’

Mission: Impossible 8 has already been hounded by delays during production thanks to Covid and then last year’s Hollywood actors’ strike, which pushed it from its intended release date in 2024.

‘Staff on the movie or stars who are needed for filming have been told if they can’t get to Longcross because of the M25 closures they’ll be flown in by chopper.’

Unsurprisingly, the observation has been made that it’s ‘a feat that is just like a scene out of one of Tom’s films’.

The upcoming blockbuster, which was recently confirmed to be dropping its intended title of Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two, is now eyeing a May 2025 release.

Assuming, of course, that the M25 doesn’t cause any more issues, with a further four daytime closures of the M25 taking place up to September.

Although dates for these have not yet been announced, the next one is expected in April.

The project, due to be completed in summer 2025, will increase the number of lanes at junction 10, one of the UK’s busiest and most dangerous motorway junctions.

Cruise and cast including Pegg and Atwell were spotted in Derbyshire over the past few weeks , sparking speculation that parts of the movie were being filmed nearby.

The star then delighted a staff with a surprise visit to Lovage Restaurant in Bakewell between shoots, happily posing for pictures.
