Mount Kiyawa

Located in Sta. Maria is the famous minor peak of Mount Kiyawa. Standing approximately 420 meters above sea level with magnificent panoramic views of neighboring mountains, municipalities, and seas. From the peak of the mountain, the municipalities of Malita, Malalag, Sulop, and Padada are visible, and even Mount Apo can be seen!

A shrine of Sto. Niño can be seen on the peak of the mountain. The shrine was built to honor Sto. Niño, which pilgrims visit every Lenten Season. The local municipal hall is found at the foot of the mountain, the only starting site before hikers can reach the mountain’s peak.

Olanivan Island is quite distinguishable with its circular formation. Visitors get unlimited views of Balut Island and Saranggani Island from the island. Balut Island

Little Boracay

How to Get There

To get to Davao Occidental, visitors can take a flight to Francisco Bangoy International Airport, also known as Davao International Airport, from any major city such as Manila, Clark, and Cebu. It is the main airport in Davao City and the whole Davao Region.

Visitors can take a taxi from the airport to any point in Davao City or Ecoland Bus Terminal. There is no direct bus from the airport. The best way to get around Davao Occidental is by jeepney and, for ease and convenience, by rented vehicle.

How to get to Balut Island

The jump-off point to Balut Island is General Santos City. You can take an overnight boat from GenSan to Balut Island, Sarangani, Davao Occidental. The boat departs at 9:00 PM but you must go to the port early like 7:00 PM to get on board. The boat schedule from General Santos to Balut Island and vice-versa is listed here .

Olanivan Island

Another one among the tourist spots in Davao Occidental you need to see is the Olanivan Island. Truly, it’s a tropical island that you need to see and experience. With circular formation, this white sand beach will give you unlimited views of the astonishing islands of Balut and Sarangani.

The highlight of this trip is the white lighthouse tour in the island. With an extra time, you can have some beach lounging while sipping cold pina colada or any drink for that matter, hahaha. Little Boracay

One of the newest tourist spots in Davao Occidental today is the Little Boracay . It’s located in Santa Maria, a 4-hour bus ride from Davao Ecoland Terminal. The name was inspired by the original Boracay since the island somehow looks like the famous beach in the Philippines when it’s not yet commercialized.

The pristine grayish sand and clear azure waters give a nice combo, especially when you look at it from afar. In addition, the coconut trees add more tropical beauty to the whole island. If you visit it on a weekday, you will enjoy more of the peace and quiet as you will only see a few tourists in the area. And if you’re lucky, you’ll only meet the local fishermen in Little Boracay.

Davao Occidental , the 81st province in the Philippines, was carved out of the southern part of Davao del Sur. You should add Governor Generoso area to your list of areas near Davao. Its truly an amazing place and not well known, other than people in Davao. So it doesn’t get as many people as all the popular spots in the Philippines.

Davao Occidental is the 81st and newest province in the Philippines located in the Davao Region in Mindanao. Its capital is the municipality of Malita. Davao Occidental’s Exotic and Beautiful Olanivan Island

Olanivan Island is located in the newly created province of the Philippines, Davao Occidental. It is a remote island where tourists can enjoy the breathtaking scenery that surrounds it. This tropical island has a circular sand beach formation and is near to Balut Island and Sarangani Island.

Tourists can also enjoy touring around its white lighthouse. The old lighthouse was built by the Americans during the American Colonial period. It served as a guide for the American warships going to Australia. Meanwhile, if you don’t want crowded beaches, this island is the perfect destination to visit.

The island is definitely a paradise which is situated north of Sarangani and northeast of Balut Island. These three islands make up the island group known as the Sarangani Islands. A visit to this island will certainly let you feel calm and relax because of its soothing ambience.

How to get there

From Manila, take a flight going to General Santos City. From GenSan, there is a passenger ferry bound for Balut Island every day (except on Sundays) between 10:00 PM to 12:00 MN. Estimated travel time is around 7 to 9 hours. Upon reaching Balut Island, rent a boat that will take you to Olanivan Island. The island is just an hour away from Balut Island.

Attractions nearby

Balut Island – also known as Sanguil, is a volcanic island south of the tip of Davao Occidental province in the Mindanao region, Southern Philippines. It is one of the most visited tourist attractions in Davao Occidental which is part of the town of Sarangani.

Sarangani Island – eponymous to Sarangani town, the island is another tourist attraction that one will fall in love. Like Balut and Olanivan Islands, Sarangani Island is also enticing because of the scenery that awaits you. It is also considered as an important island in the town.

Tuke Maklang Beach Resort – situated in Balut Island, this resort is fully developed where tourists can bring their tents for free. There are also open cottages that are available for only Php 100. Tuke Maklang Beach Resort is popular for boat riding or kayaking.

Sabang Hot Spring –another attraction located in Balut Island. It has two enclosed hot springs where tourists can boil their selves at a temperature that can reach 80°C. Sabang Hot Spring is about one hour and thirty minutes from Olanivan Island.

Balut Island, Davao Occidental

I chose a flight from Manila to Davao to save so my itinerary started upon deplaning. Had a taxi to Davao Overland terminal. Breakfast at the carinderia by the terminal. Rode in a non-stop bus to General Santos City and alighted at Bulaong Bus Terminal. Travel time was about 2.5 hours. Had lunch at the carinderia by the terminal. Rode in a trike to the City Hall. Picture Picture. Then, walked to City Escape Inn (on Google Maps) to rest. I don’t usually eat heavy meals in the evening so I only had bread and fruit for dinner. Rest. City Escape Inn Review: 1000 pesos is expensive for me (solo). The room is spacious with queen size bed. The toilet is clean but the shower heater doesn’t work.

The next day, after checking out at 3PM, I walked again to my second lodging - Limelily Pension House 2 (on Google Maps). Had dinner at SM Gensan. You may have noticed, I spent 2 nights in Gensan with no special happening and that’s because I was trying to establish the route via public vehicle to Balanganon Port but, there was none. It was only on the second night when I received the contact number of the van driver. PM me on FB for contact details.

Home of all things colorful, unique and affordable in Davao is the Roxas Avenue Night Market. Locals flock to this street sale to buy local goods for less and to enjoy all sorts of Filipino food .  The market opens at 5 PM and not for long, you’ll begin to smell all the BBQ and other delicacies being cooked here.

Because many of the delicacies offered here are quite strange for foreigners, it’s great to visit this market with a local so you’d know what you’re eating. Everything is cheap (especially for Westerners) and it’s a great place to mingle with Davaoeños.

Malita, Davao Occidental: A Good Place to Visit in the Philippines

A first-class community, Malita serves as the capital of the province of Davao Occidental in the Philippines. It is known for the heritage of its people and tribes, as well as its various cultural arts. These are the main reasons why this place is visited by tourists who want to experience rich cultures traditions.

Origin of the Municipality’s Name

According to stories by folks in this place, the name “Malita” was taken from the Spanish word “maleta”, which means suitcase. Purportedly, Don Mariano Peralta, a veteran of the Spanish-American War who ventured to the place, decided to live on the vast fertile plain across a river. While bodily fording the river with his suitcase in hand, the strong current tipped his balance, and his belongings was swept by the water. His shouts of “maleta! maleta!” then attracted the attention of the natives who responded and retrieved his vanishing suitcase. Unwittingly, the natives then thought of the words he shouted referred to the land he intended to settle in, thus the name of the place.

The oldest community in Davao Occidental, Malita dates back years before being formally declared as municipality on November 17, 1936. It is presumed that the place already existed long before the Philippine Commission Act was passed because Laws of the Moro Province that mentioned it dated December 10, 1904, stating that it existed as barrio of Sta. Cruz long before Americans came to Davao.

President Manuel L. Quezon proclaimed Malita into a municipality, where Marcelino Maruya was appointed as the first mayor. Waves of migrants from Visayas then came and followed by those from Luzon, increasing its population until it became as the most populous municipality in the province.

Present Economy

Malita is the main economic center of Davao Occidental, and its main industry is agriculture and fishery. Though far behind other big urban centers in its vicinity, such as Davao City , General Santos City and Digos City, the municipality still serves as a major urban center of the province. And because of its rapid and continuous economic activity, it is expected that Malita will become a component city for years to come.

Politics and Government

The municipal officials consist of the congressman, mayor, vice mayor and councilors. It is subdivided into 30 barangays, which are headed by their chairmen. Its biggest proposal to date is the biggest government office in Davao Province.

Malita offers education from the elementary to the tertiary levels. Among the most prominent educational institutions here are Southern Philippines Agri-Business and Marine and Aquatic School of Technology, Adventure College of Malita, Mindanao Savers Technological Institute and Seng Pek Chuan Academy.

Malita is home to a lot of attractions for both young and old travelers. Among the places tourists visit are its beaches, caves and waterfalls. These include the SPAMAS Beach Resort, Terra Beach Resort, Boy Blue’s Hillside Resort, Tubalan Cove, Kipanan Falls, Kablolan Falls, Balakayo Falls, Danao Lagoon, Kipiya Cave, Sangay Falls, Bagsak Ridge, Banate Pass and Malyab Mountain Resort.

When my great-grandfather, Don Mariano Peralta came to Malita, Malita was already called Malita. In fact, even before the Spaniards came to the Philippines, Malita was already called Malita, according to Dutch historical archives. Malita was a vassal state of the Rajahnate of Buayan. My great-grandmother, Bai Mukuy aka Colasa Bambang, the wife of Don Peralta was a Muslim princess from Buayan. Together, they built the modern-day Malita 🙂

1. Philippine Eagle Centre

The center provides a safe refuge for the country’s national bird, the Philippine Monkey-Eating Eagle. It is a critically endangered species with less than 400 pairs left in the wild.

The sanctuary has around 36 eagles, 10 other bird species, 4 species of mammals, and 2 reptile species including huge snakes.

When you visit here, you’ll not only appreciate nature and its wildlife. You also contribute to the saving of the Philippine Eagles. Every penny you give helps in the protection and conservation of these rare and endangered birds.

The entrance fee here is Php 250. You can add more if you want to help fund the conservation of these majestic eagles.

2. Roxas Avenue Night Market

Come and experience various culinary specialties of Davao here at the Roxas Night Market. If you’re looking for budget-friendly clothes or souvenir items, don’t worry. You can find them all right here.

Stroll along with the market and prepare to savor fresh and cooked seafood such as tuna and squids. Experience fresh Durian treats or you can try Durian shakes at a relatively cheaper price.

If you like something different, they have charcoal ice cream and different butchi flavors.

The market opens at 6 am and ends at midnight.

3. Samal Island

This one piece of tropical paradise is just a 15-minute of boat ride away from Davao City. Enjoy a ride around the island and drop by one of the numerous white, pristine beaches.

There is a cave on the island where you can find millions of bats. Thankfully, these are protected and allow the local community to earn through ecotourism.

4. Crocodile Park

5. People’s Park Davao City

Established in 2007, the park covers 4 acres and contains a beautiful rainforest, man-made pools, cascading waterfalls, and some of the Philippine Monkey-Eating Eagles.

Feeding the pigeons is another adorable activity you can do here. You can also jog around the colorfully-paved paths, or join a public Zumba class every Sunday at 6 am.

6. Magsaysay Fruit Stand

Just along a local highway, this is one of the best sites to buy the famous fruits of Davao City such as Durian, mangosteen, marang, and rambutan. You’ll have dizzying options but the good thing, is you can be sure that the fruits are of good and fresh quality.

Different fruits treat such as candies, jams, and crackers are also available here.

If you feel hungry after haggling across the stalls, there is the nearby Fishcado, an open-air seafood resto that offers various seafood specialties. Don’t forget to try the famous tuna here.

During the late afternoon, more and more food stalls and snack carts open and come streaming in, creating a paradise of street foods. You’ll surely feel like you are in Bangkok.

7. Jack’s Ridge

Coming here would give you a full bird’s eye view of Davao City, both during the night and day. It’s a great place to unwind and relax because of the abundance of trees and flowers. The landscapes here are also a sight to see.

Aside from the views, you can dine in two restaurants here. The first is Karlo’s Gourmet which serves brewed coffee and baked delicacies. The other option is Taklobo which offers an open-air dining area where you can immerse in sumptuous Filipino meals.

Also, you can spend an overnight in one of the cottages next to a pool. Catch sight of a beautiful sunrise the following morning.

Jack’s Ridge has also historical tales to tell. During World War II, the retreating Japanese used it as a headquarter because of its strategic location.

8. Davao City Butterfly House

Just like the Philippine Eagle Center, this is also a sanctuary within the city. It serves as a refuge for various species of butterflies, plants, and ornamentals, including exotic animal and insect species such as fish, birds, scorpions, and a lot more.

Experience trailing along with towering trees, relaxing grass, and colorful flowers as you tour around the sanctuary.

It is best to come here during the morning because the butterflies are most active during this time of the day. You can find their dating, mating, and dancing. You’ll surely catch a lot of photographic memories.

9. Davao Museum

If you love to learn about local culture and history, then do visit the Davao Museum. Here, you’ll find an extensive collection of artwork and memorabilia, showcasing the culture of the different indigenous peoples (IPs) of Mindanao such as the Manobo tribes. 10. Mt. Apo

To get to Mt. Apo’s summit, you’ll need to hike for hours/days along with grasslands, dipterocarp forests, and mossy forests.

While atop, you can catch a breathtaking view of the lowland farms, cities, towns, and other towering peaks of Mindanao. You’re even luckier if you chance on a stunning sea of cloud formations.

The mountain is also a haven for the critically-endangered Philippine monkey-eating eagle and numerous other species. Tracks of wild deer and boar can also be seen.

11. Tudaya Falls

Tudaya falls ranks as one of the highest falls in Davao, measuring more than 100 meters high. It drops like a bridal veil on the face of a massive cliff towards a beautiful pool. It is also one of the most popular in Mindanao and is frequented by both local and foreign hikers.

It may take hours of a hike along jungle trails to reach Tudaya falls. But the reward you get is superb. The trail itself communes you with nature and you’ll feel refreshed and invigorated. If you’re lucky, you’ll catch sight of endemic flora and fauna such as different species of birds and beautiful orchids and flowers.

Once you reach the falls, you can’t help but take a plunge in the crystal-clear waters. There’s more. The waters emanate from mossy forests upstream and it’s refreshingly cold!

12. Eden Nature Park

Nestled at the foot of majestic Mt. Talomo, Eden Nature Park is a man-made park covering 80 hectares. It features thousands of forest trees and pine trees, most of which are introduced species to the area. You can also spot exotic wildlife species such as birds, flowers, and numerous kinds of insects.

This is a perfect getaway if you’re looking for a nature immersion without the need for extensive hiking. You’re on a relaxed pace here. Stroll around and smell the pine-scented breeze, giving you a mystifying and healing experience.

The park also offers a 45-minute shuttle tour to some of its best spots.

13. Museo Dabawenyo

Just like the Davao Museum, Museo Dabawenyo showcases the rich culture and history of the locals of Davao and neighboring provinces. Here, you can find various artworks, informational monuments, and historic photos.

The Museo Dabawenyo also contains four major galleries.

·         Indigenous People’s Gallery – houses various materials of the different Lumad tribes such as native house replicas, bamboo and bronze instruments, and native-style weapons

·         Contemporary Gallery – showcases traditional Filipino fashion, mostly leased with a cultural touch

·         Memorabilia Gallery – presents Filipino old bills, musical notes, and clothes

·         Moro People’s Gallery – displays the antiques of the Muslim people such as lamps, chairs, armors, and royal crowns

14. Mt. Talomo

Mt. Talomo stands adjacent to Mt. Apo. It also ranks as one of the top ten highest peaks in the Philippines. Many hikers take the Mt. Talomo to Mt. Apo traverse route to experience a more extreme adventure.

This traverse is one of the most difficult in the Philippines and would take days to complete.

Just like Mt. Apo, Mt. Talomo is rich in biodiversity, although many species are threatened with extinction. Much of the lower patches of the mountain have already been cleared for agriculture and logging.

15. D’Bone Collector Museum

It has an extensive collection of skeletal bones from various animal species. The highlight of which, is the skeleton of a 41-feet Sperm Whale, an endangered species.

16. Philippine-Japanese Historical Museum

There are also retrieved relics such as guns, ammunition, and army clothing. You’ll also see replicas of the living quarters of the Japanese during the war and until the time, they worked on abaca plantations.

17. Malagos Garden Resort

Carved along the slopes of Matina Balusong, this tunnel was built by Prisoners of War during World War II. It served as a hide-out and escape route for the Japanese. They also used this to transport military supplies while mobilizing their forces against the invading American forces.

You may feel a bit eerie coming here given the casualties and brutalities. But, you’ll learn a lot about history as well as important lessons about wars. Therefore, if you are historical savvy, this should make up for your Davao tourist spots itinerary.

19. Blue Post’s Boiling Crab and Seafood

If you want to experience seafood royalty, then do visit this favorite seafood spot in Davao City. But be prepared to get messy and make your hands dirty.

Here, you eat with your bare hands like you are in a boodle fight. You have a wide range of seafood options to choose from – tuna belly and muscles, crab, clams, and many more.

These are placed in a large plastic bag filled with mouthwatering sauces and hunks of corn. Once you hit your order, these are then laid out on your table, ready for a sumptuous feast.
