BY JEF GOODGER

The top eight PBA Tour players based on competition points earned over the past two seasons will compete in the PBA Tour Finals with nine hours of live coverage this weekend on CBS Sports Network. Held for the first time at Strikerz Bowling at Angel of the Winds Casino, PBA Tour Finals qualifying rounds begin Saturday at 3 p.m. ET and the group stepladder finals and championship match air Sunday at 3 p.m. ET on CBSSN.

PBA Tour Finals Field Seeding for the PBA Tour Finals is determined by combined 2021 and 2022 PBA Tour points.

  • Jason Belmonte
  • Anthony Simonsen
  • Kris Prather
  • Jakob Butturff
  • Dom Barrett
  • Tom Daugherty

The players are divided into two groups for the qualifying and stepladder rounds. Belmonte, Troup, Prather and Daugherty make up Group 1. Simonsen, Tackett, Butturff and Barrett form Group 2.

Simonsen vs. Troup For the past two seasons, the championship match has been the same: Anthony Simonsen vs. Kyle Troup. Simonsen is the defending champion, getting revenge on Troup who won the title in 2020. The winners of each group stepladder advance to the championship match, and with Simonsen and Troup in different groups, it’s possible we could see a rubber match. The championship match is contested in a Race to 2 Points format, with a 9th/10th-frame roll-off breaking a 1-1 tie if necessary.

Troup is coming off his second consecutive PBA Playoffs championship and a win in the Tour Finals would make it three straight seasons in which Troup claimed multiple PBA Tour titles.

Belmonte, Simonsen and Tackett Qualify Again Only two players have competed in all five PBA Tour Finals events since its inception in 2017: EJ Tackett and Simonsen. Jason Belmonte has qualified for all five, but didn’t participate in 2020 or 2021. All three players are former champions (Tackett is the only player to have won the event twice) and all three are in the field this year, with Belmonte the No. 1 seed, Simonsen second and Tackett third.

Belmonte is looking to win his fifth title of the season, which would be the first time he’s ever won five titles in a single season (he won four in 2017 as well as so far in 2022). Simonsen already owns two majors this year (U.S. Open and USBC Masters) and would win three titles in a season for the first time in his career if he can successfully defend his Tour Finals title. Tackett has a win among 10 top-10 finishes this season and leads the PBA Tour in average.

Daugherty Debuts Tom Daugherty, the eighth seed, is the only player in the field making his PBA Tour Finals debut. The 2021 PBA World Champion will be looking for his fifth career title against seven players who have bowled in this unique format before. As noted, Simonsen and Tackett have competed all five years of the event’s existence. Prather is making his fourth straight appearance and all other players are competing for the third time. Barrett is making his return after two years outside the top eight and Butturff re-enters after missing the top eight last year.

PBA Fans will be able to live-stream the PBA Tour Finals on CBS Sports Network. Select highlights will be available on @PBATour social handles across Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube.

Live from Middletown, it's Del.'s first nationally televised PBA Tour event: Delaware Classic

A fter 15 years of hosting Professional Bowlers Association events, Middletown's Mid-County Lanes & Entertainment is welcoming its first major PBA Tour stop, complete with a live national TV audience.

And the new $180,000 tournament has a name that should make the First State blush: the Delaware Classic.

"It really puts Delaware in the spotlight," says Mike Zanghi, director of operations at Mid-County Lanes, which opened off South Broad Street in 2006.

The tournament runs at the 32-lane bowling center Monday, Feb. 26, through Sunday, March 3, kicking off with a pro-am Monday and concluding with the tournament finals on Sunday, which will be airing live on FS1 starting at noon.

"We're going to be the center of the bowling world for a whole week," Zanghi adds. "It's crazy for me to think about that. It still doesn't feel real."

FS1's live telecast of Delaware Classic

Over the past 15 years, Mid-County Lanes has hosted 16 tournaments with the PBA, the major sanctioning body for the sport of professional bowling in the United States.

But this one is different, delivering major buzz to Delaware's bowling community, says Len Holmquist, a veteran Delaware bowling reporter.

"This is a big deal," says Holmquist, the Delaware Online/The New Journal bowling news/notes writer for 40 years ending in 2015.

He believes it's the first live televised bowling event in Delaware since ESPN was at Holiday Lanes in Claymont in 1990 for the Ladies Pro Bowlers Tour's Columbia 300 Delaware Open.

With the Delaware Classic 's live telecast comes major changes to the bowling center for the finals.

Some tickets still available

A team of about 30 television production workers was to dissemble 14 lanes at the alley on Saturday ― a 15-hour process of removing the ball returns, chairs, tables, scoring monitors and lights. Pretty much everything but the actual hardwood lane needed to go.

"Everything pretty much gets gutted," Zanghi says.

In its place will be 45 feet of bleachers that will run along each side of lanes 7 and 8 where the finals will be held, allowing the 300 lucky fans with tickets to surround the action.

Tickets for the finals quickly sold out, costing bowling fans $40.

The $15 standing-room-only tickets were still available as of press time. Spectator passes for other tournament days cost $15 per day or $50 for the week . Ticket links can be found at midcountylanes.com/pba .

DELAWARE'S TIME TO SHINE Only 3 of 1,300 singers on 'The Voice' have been from Delaware. That is about to change

"Fans will have a really cool view. It's almost like you're in a stadium," Zanghi says. "I think fans understand the magnitude of this and there's no guarantee it's going to happen again."

The rest of the newly created space on the lanes made for the tournament will make room for television commentator booths, cameras and other production equipment.

Prepared for anything. Even streakers

With the finals televised live, Zanghi is spending every waking moment thinking about what could go wrong and trying to prepare for it.

Even streakers jealous of the attention the bowling balls will be getting?

Yup. He's had that thought and security has already been hired.

"We're producing a live TV show so it adds so many layers to the preparation that you normally wouldn't think about and, yeah, streaking is one of them," he says.

IMPROVEMENTS COMING Wilmington Airport gets $5.6 million in federal money to expand terminal

Tournament week

The week of tournament events kicks off with a bang as 144 bowlers compete Monday night in the Delaware Classic's pro-am across all 32 lanes. There's so much demand that there's an active waiting list, Zanghi says.

Qualifying rounds for the tournament begin the next day for the 64 qualifying PBA bowlers and run throughout the week, ending Friday night to allow the production team to start breaking down lanes for the finals starting at 3:30 a.m. Saturday.

"They will completely transform it," Holmquist says. "It will be unrecognizable."

The tournament will be awarding $180,000 in prize money spread among the top 32 finishers. The winner will go home with $25,000; the second-place finisher, $15,000; and third place, $12,500.

PBA: Tour finals returns to Washington this weekend

By   NOLAN HUGHES

PBA Communications

ARLINGTON, Wash. — This weekend, the PBA’s top eight players over the past two seasons convene at the PBA Tour Finals at Strikerz Bowling in the Angel of the Winds Casino Resort for the second consecutive year.

The Tour Finals represents the 15th title event of the 2023 season.

All five rounds of the PBA Tour Finals will be aired live on CBS Sports Network, featuring nine hours of PBA action on June 24-25.

Seven of the eight finalists are returners from last season’s PBA Tour Finals: EJ Tackett, Anthony Simonsen, defending champion Jason Belmonte, Dom Barrett, Jakob Butturff, Kris Prather and Kyle Troup.

Meanwhile, Packy Hanrahan will make his PBA Tour Finals debut. The two-handed southpaw charged into seventh on the 2022-23 points list following his win at the Roth/Holman PBA Doubles Championship with Mitch Hupé and 16th place showing at the PBA Players Championship.

Bill O’Neill could have usurped Troup by winning the season’s final major title, but his semifinal loss to Butturff at the PBA Players Championship allowed Troup to hang onto the ultimate spot in the field.

Though players will be competing on different oil patterns this year, fans should be prepared for a torrid scoring pace. Last season, players averaged over 228 across 20 combined games during the stepladder finals.

Not to mention both Troup and Belmonte shot a perfect game as they became the first players to bowl a PBA televised 300 on the same day.

All previous PBA Tour Finals champions will be represented in the event’s seventh iteration. Tackett and defending champion Belmonte have each won the event twice, while Troup and Simonsen have also taken home the trophy.

Tackett, the 2017 and 2019 Tour Finals victor, has a chance to tie the single-season titles record this season. With five titles already under his belt, Mark Roth’s 1978 record of eight titles lies within reach if Tackett can win all three remaining title events.

The PBA/PWBA Striking Against Breast Cancer Mixed Doubles in July and Storm Lucky Larsen Masters in September are the final two title events of the 2023 season.

While supplies last, tickets are available for the Tour Finals  here .

The format for the PBA Tour Finals will be the same as last season: Players will be split into two groups based on their point totals over the past two seasons.

Group 1 comprises Tackett, Barrett, Butturff and Troup, while Simonsen, Belmonte, Prather and Hanrahan make up Group 2.

For Saturday’s positioning round, each player will bowl two games on the 38-foot Webb pattern and two games on the 43-foot Anthony pattern to determine seeding for Sunday’s stepladders. Group 1 competes on CBS Sports Network at 3 p.m., while Group 2 hits the lanes at 5 p.m.

On Sunday, competition shifts to a dual-pattern format for the group stepladders beginning at 2:30 p.m. The final match of each group stepladder will feature a Race-to-Two format; if the players split the two games, a ninth and 10th frame roll-off will decide the winner.

Advancers from each group stepladder will meet in Sunday evening’s championship, another Race-to-Two match (6:30 p.m. on CBSSN).

And then, when you’re ready to continue, return to a designated bus stop, show your pass, and hop back on the bus and onwards towards your next attraction. So, go ahead and make a whole loop of the route once you have your tour ticket, get familiar with the city and pick out your favorite places to visit and then return to them during your stay.

Q: How many days are enough to explore Moscow?

We recommend at least two to three days to explore Moscow at a relaxed pace and cover most of its prominent attractions while enjoying shopping and local cuisine.

Q: What is the validity of the ticket?

There are several ticket options available to you, depending on your length of stay. Each bus tour will have validity from 24, 36, 48 to 72 hours. And the great thing is you can plan ahead as the vouchers are valid anywhere between 6 months to 1 year and can be used at any point during that period. Check the product page or bus tour operator for complete details.

Q: Where can I find a list of all the stops and a map of the various Moscow hop-on hop-off tour routes?

You can visit the relevant product page and check the Useful Downloads section to find the latest information as routes, stops, and timings change frequently.
