Whether you want to update your Insta on the go or need to keep in touch with the office, losing your internet signal can be very frustrating.

But it’s annoying (and can be unsafe) to rely on public Wi-Fi signals in every coffee shop you visit, and sometimes when traveling to remote locations, public connections are just not available.

Instead, you can invest in a mobile Wi-Fi hotspot to ensure safe, secure, and reliable internet access anywhere you go. Here’s what you need to consider when choosing the best one for you.

A Wi-Fi hotspot is a battery-powered wireless router that travels with you. Designed to be compact and lightweight enough to slip into your purse or pocket, a mobile Wi-Fi hotspot device brings the internet to your phone, tablet, or laptop, no matter where in the world it finds you.

These gadgets are a big bonus for anyone traveling away from public Wi-Fi or those looking for a secure connection. A bit like a cellular device, your Wi-Fi hotspot provides access to invisible signals in the sky, all of which can help you to upload pics or receive your emails on the move.

You will need to pay for the data you use, which can be done in the form of packages or day passes that offer unlimited access for a set period of time.

Bottom Line: Using 3G or 4G (and maybe even 5G in the coming months), these smart little devices emit a reliable and incredibly useful Wi-Fi signal that you can hook your favorite gadgets and devices to while away from home.

Battery Life

Most batteries will run happily for between 5-6 hours at a time. If you are traveling somewhere with easy access to electricity, you should be able to charge overnight to ensure your hotspot works when you need it for your daily adventures. If you spend a disproportionately large amount of time online, you may want to look at a device that offers a longer battery life.

Size and Weight

Your Wi-Fi hotspot should be small enough to be carried everywhere with you. After all, if it’s not entirely portable, what exactly is the point? Slimline, lightweight, and often smaller than the smartphone you are trying to connect to, these devices are compact and clever.

Wi-Fi Support

Because some mobile internet providers are better than others, the coverage you receive from any Wi-Fi hotspot can also vary. For example, 2.4GHz gives coverage at a more extended range but will transmit the data at a much slower speed. A 5GHz band, on the other hand, will provide less range with data transmitted at a much faster speed.

Though they may be small, they are still mighty, and most hotspot devices will have a built-in display. At the very least, the display should indicate remaining battery life and current Wi-Fi signal strength. Others may offer bonus features like SMS messages or touch screen modes.

Card Reader

Some portable Wi-Fi hotspots come with the capability to read MicroSD memory cards, which can be used to store and access files from your laptop or home computer. You can also share your stored files with the people who use your network when you want them to have access.

MicroSD memory cards are not typically included with the purchase of a Wi-Fi hotspot, but they are a useful addition that allows you to send and receive SMS messages and save images, music, and other data-heavy files.

Mobile data is delivered using 1 of 2 types of cellular signals in different countries and regions around the world. These cellular standards allow for communication between individuals; without them, we would not be able to keep in touch on such a global scale.

Known as GSM and CDMA, each standard converts both incoming and outgoing radio waves in entirely different ways. Before you buy a hotspot, you need to understand its function and where you’ll be able to use it.

Global System for Mobile Communication is used in most countries around the world. In the U.S., only AT&T and T-Mobile use GSM. GSM uses Time Division Multiple Access (or TDMA), which allocates time slots to multiple conversation streams and alters how phones transmit their information. Doing this requires a SIM card (or “subscriber identification module” card).

It is the SIM card that holds all the information you need to make calls, use mobile internet, and store your contacts. The SIM card tells the device what services you have access to and is vital for GSM communications on the go.

CDMA is used in countries including Russia and the U.S. ( Sprint , Verizon , and US Cellular), and it grants users full access to a wide spectrum of bandwidth, meaning more users can connect at any one time. It also encodes each signal, meaning that every conversation remains protected and filtered.

CDMA does not rely on SIM cards as the device has the technology built into it from the carriers’ networks. This once meant that if you wanted to change carriers, you would need to buy a new device altogether. These days though, many CDMA devices offer the capability to use a SIM card too, especially for those on LTE networks.

Bottom Line: Different countries (and different carriers) use different technologies. In the U.S., Sprint, Verizon, and US Cellular use CDMA, while AT&T and T-Mobile use GSM. When it comes to purchasing a hotspot, make sure you understand what type you’re buying, what countries it will work in, and what providers it will function with.

Can mobile hotspot replace home Wi-Fi?

Although mobile hotspots can be used in place of home Wi-Fi, it usually carries higher usage costs. If you are a heavy downloader or video streamer, you would likely be better off registering for a home Wi-Fi service.

Does American Airlines have Wi-Fi?

How much is wi-fi on american airlines, does american airlines have free wi-fi, how to save on american airlines wi-fi using credit cards, how to connect to american airlines wi-fi, wi-fi comparison across u.s. airlines, if you want to connect to american airlines wi-fi.

For many travelers, staying connected is essential: Whether it's dealing with urgent work requests or staying in touch with friends and family, simply disconnecting for a flight just isn't an option. If you're one of these travelers, the good news is that American Airlines Wi-Fi is ubiquitous and usually pretty speedy — unlike the slow ground-based Wi-Fi of yesteryear.

Best of all, you might be able to get American Airlines Wi-Fi for free through credit card benefits and on a few unique American Airlines "flights." Here's everything you need to know about American Airlines Wi-Fi.

American Airlines has invested heavily in installing speedy satellite-based Wi-Fi on its aircraft. In 2019, American even claimed the title of offering "more aircraft with high-speed Wi-Fi than any other airline." Nowadays, flyers can expect to have a Wi-Fi connection on almost every American Airlines flight.

The only exceptions are two types of small Embraer Regional Jets — specifically the ERJ-145 and ERJ-170, which are operated by the airline's American Eagle regional subsidiaries. Other than when flying on these regional jets, you can be sure that your aircraft will be Wi-Fi equipped, whether you're flying to Abilene, Texas or Zurich.

If you want to confirm American Airlines in-flight Wi-Fi on your next trip, check your flight's status . In addition to seeing information like terminals, gates and even baggage claim location, American Airlines lists a Wi-Fi symbol if your flight is Wi-Fi equipped.

travel america wifi

The cost of American Airlines Wi-Fi depends roughly on how long your flight is and which Wi-Fi provider is powering your flight. The cost can be as low as $10 per flight — or as much as $35 per flight on some international American Airlines flights.

Frequent American Airlines flyers may want to purchase a monthly pass. An American Airlines Wi-Fi Subscription Plan costs $49.95 per month or $59.95 per month for a 2-device plan.

travel america wifi

This pass will let you connect to the Wi-Fi on almost all domestic and short-haul international flights for no additional cost. Just note that you can't use this American Airlines Wi-Fi plan to connect to the Wi-Fi on long-haul international flights — which is when a subscription might save you the most.

All American Airlines passengers can connect to AA.com without paying for a Wi-Fi pass. You can use this to check flight status, find your connecting gate or even book additional flights.

» Learn more: Guide to American Airlines elite status

American Airlines doesn't offer free Wi-Fi to elite members, premium cabin passengers or credit card holders — at least directly. On certain American Airlines flights, passengers can watch a short advertisement in exchange for 20 or 30 minutes of free Wi-Fi, seemingly depending on the advertiser.

Another niche way to get free American Airlines Wi-Fi is to take the American Airlines bus . All travelers on the Landline-operated buses get free Wi-Fi in addition to streaming entertainment. But don't expect much. In NerdWallet tests, this connection only measured a few megabits per second. Also, this bus service is currently only available to three airports from Philadelphia.

Travelers can get discounted or free American Airlines Wi-Fi by carrying certain American Airlines AAdvantage credit cards or using travel credits on other cards.

AAdvantage® Aviator® Red World Elite Mastercard® holders get $25 back as a statement credit annually for in-flight Wi-Fi purchases. Meanwhile, AAdvantage® Aviator® Silver Mastercard® holders get $50 back annually as a statement credit for in-flight Wi-Fi purchases.

Small business owners can charge Wi-Fi purchases to the CitiBusiness® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® Mastercard® to get 25% back on American Airlines Wi-Fi purchases, with no cap on how much you can save.

Travelers can also use airline fee credits or travel credits offered on certain credit cards to offset the cost of a Wi-Fi purchase or monthly pass. For example, Chase Sapphire Reserve® cardholders can charge American Airlines Wi-Fi purchases to their card to utilize the card's $300 annual travel credit.

Cardholders of certain American Express cards can use the airline fee credit to cover American Airlines Wi-Fi purchases. Eligible cards include the following:

The Platinum Card® from American Express : $200 airline fee credit.

The Business Platinum Card® from American Express : $200 airline fee credit.

Terms apply.

Once you board your American Airlines flight, connect to the aainflight.com Wi-Fi signal. You'll be prompted to agree to the terms and conditions for using the network. Doing so will unlock your ability to use AA.com, but you won't be connected to the internet quite yet.

travel america wifi

To get connected, browse to aainflight.com and purchase a pass or log into your subscription plan. Remember that you won't be able to use a subscription plan on long-haul international flights, so you won't see that option listed when browsing the connection options.

Many American Airlines flights offer Wi-Fi connection from gate to gate. Whether you're purchasing a full-flight pass or utilizing a subscription, you might as well connect as soon as you can to maximize your purchase.

In our most recent analysis of the best onboard Wi-Fi services , we ranked the major U.S. airlines on various factors, including cost, availability and whether there were discounts for co-branded card holders or elite members. Here's how the results stacked up:

American Airlines offers Wi-Fi on almost all of its flights. However, connecting inflight is going to generally cost you between $10 and $35 per American Airlines flight.

You can cut this cost by charging the purchase to certain American Airlines credit cards or a credit card that offers a travel credit. The only way to get truly free American Airlines Wi-Fi is through advertiser promotions or on the American Airlines Landline bus service.

These Are the U.S. Airlines and Airports With the Best (and Worst) Wi-Fi

A new study shows which airline and airport have the greatest capability to stay connected while on the go.

travel america wifi

SDI Productions/Getty Images

Travelers flying on Alaska Airlines have access to the best Wi-Fi in the skies in the United States, according to a new study.

When it comes to connecting at 30,000 feet, Alaska Airlines took the top spot amongst U.S. airlines, but the Seattle-based carrier in fact only scored a 2.41 out of 5, according to a study from website Electronics Hub . (In 2022, the airline introduced a flat rate for its Internet , which costs $8 for the whole flight.)

That was followed by JetBlue and Delta Air Lines , which came in at No. 2 and No. 3 on the list, with each offering free inflight Wi-Fi on their flights. Southwest Airlines, which now charges per flight instead of per day for the service, came in fourth.

“Air travel is a great means of escape — and not just to your destination… But thankfully, for those who need or crave it, airport and airline Wi-Fi has improved lately,” Electronics Hub wrote in the study.

Low-cost carrier Spirit Airlines ranked last on the list for U.S. airlines, only scoring 1.11 out of 5 with customers complaining about the cost — browsing starts at $3.99, according to Spirit — as well as griping at a lack of connectivity at all. Spirit said Wi-Fi is available on most of the company’s aircraft, but some Airbus A319 aircraft and planes that have just joined the carrier’s fleet are not equipped with Internet.

On the ground, the Indianapolis International Airport ranked the best among North American airports, scoring a 4 out of 5 for connectivity. That was followed by both Portland and Vancouver in Canada.

But the fastest in the country is actually Fort Lauderdale’s Hollywood International Airport’s Terminal 3, according to the study, which boasts a speed of 157.6Mbps.

On the other end of the spectrum is Honolulu’s Daniel K. Inouye International Airport, which ranked the worst in the U.S. with a score of only 1.94 out of 5.

Worldwide, the airline with the best Wi-Fi is Garuda Indonesia, which scored a 4.12 out of 5.

Frequently Asked Questions

When considering the best mobile hotspots to buy, keep in mind some major features to look for. Make sure to consider coverage, portability, price, data plans, and any other handy additional features for your convenience.

One of the most important considerations should be the coverage area of the mobile hotspot. Does the mobile hotspot cover the regions you are visiting? What are the network speeds offered in that location, and are they sufficient for your purpose? Does your device have its own plan or support popular carriers?

If your hotspot device is thick and heavy or unwieldy, you will struggle to use it. For travelers and remote workers who are always on the go, pay attention to the size, weight, and shape of the mobile hotspot you choose to make sure it's the most comfortable fit for your purpose.

These days, mobile hotspots offer additional features like charging (as in the case of the Skyroam Solis) or storage space (as seen in the T-Mobile Sonic 2.0 4G Mobile Hotspot). Some hotspots come with data plans or can support multiple devices at once.

For a high-quality hotspot, you will wind up paying around $100, though the price also may take into account an included data plan, speed, and the coverage region. We have units listed here in a wide range of prices with various options.

Apple’s iPhone has been around for well over a decade now, and it’s always a great choice for those who are looking for a smartphone. For years, there was only one iPhone model to choose from, so your only decision was how much capacity to get and whether you wanted it with a darker black/gray or a lighter white/silver finish. Today, the latest iPhone models come in multiple versions, making the choice between them a bit more complicated.

For example, the newest iPhone 15 lineup offers four different models to choose from. Plus, Apple still sells the older iPhone 14 and iPhone 13. Lastly, there’s the iPhone SE for folks looking for a small and affordable no-frills model — or those who still really like the traditional home button and Touch ID sensor.

As much as we love having the best smartphones in our pockets, there are times when those small screens don't cut it and we just need a larger display. That's when you turn to a tablet, which is great for being productive on the go and can be a awesome way to unwind and relax too. While the tablet market really took off after the iPad, it has grown to be quite diverse with a huge variety of products — from great budget options to powerhouses for professionals.

We've tried out a lot of tablets here at Digital Trends, from the workhorses for pros to tablets that are made for kids and even seniors -- there's a tablet for every person and every budget. For most people, though, we think Apple's iPad Air is the best overall tablet — especially if you're already invested in the Apple ecosystem. But if you're not an Apple user, that's fine too; there are plenty of other great options that you'll find in this roundup.

If you’ve just bought one of the best iPhones, you need to be able to keep it safe. In the past, iPhone cases could be pretty bulky, cumbersome, and simply not as nice to look at as your iPhone. Those days are gone with many of the best smartphone case brands offering plenty of safety and protection for your beloved phone while looking great too. With many different styles around, there’s something to suit every aesthetic. Take a look below at some of the best iPhone case brands around, including a wide range of choices and price ranges, so there’s something for every occasion. Spigen

Spigen is a highly respected name in the smartphone case business. Its iPhone case range is pretty varied with models starting from $25 and rising to $150 depending on your needs. Clear cases such as the Ultra Hybrid and Liquid Crystal range are available if you still want to see the colorway you chose, while there’s the Liquid Air with its super sleek design so there’s no bulkiness to contend with. One intriguing addition is the Classic C1 which transforms your iPhone into the look of the iconic iMac G3. Most Spigen cases, however, focus on being cool in a subtle and understated way.

American Airlines Wifi: Cost and How to Connect to AAinflight wifi

John Parker

If you are going to fly with American Airlines and want to work while you fly or want internet access for entertainment then you will want to know does American Airlines have wifi and what it costs.

The quality of internet access and onboard wifi in most airlines is either hit or miss and the same is true for American Airlines. Like all airlines, American Airlines is constantly working to upgrade the availability and quality of the wifi service (it can be very lucrative for them after all).

In the rest of the article, you will find full details of the wifi service, costs and how to use it.

American Airlines Wifi

Does American Airlines have wifi?

American Airlines state the following on its website :

Domestic Wi-Fi  is now available on nearly all of our U.S. flights. Wi-Fi may be purchased prior to your flight by visiting aa.com/wifi or you may purchase once on board. International Wi-Fi  is available on all Boeing 777-300ER flights. Wi-Fi can be purchased once on board; currently there is not a pre-purchase option for international Wi-Fi.

How can I tell if my American Airlines flight has wifi?

To find out if your flight will have wifi available you can check the Flight Status as follows:

  • Go to the following link – https://www.aa.com/travelInformation/flights/status
  • Enter your flight details – either flight number and date or from/to airports plus the date
  • Click on your flight
  • The status of your flight will be shown
  • If wifi will be available you will see the little wifi dial symbol after the flight number and American Airlines (see example below).

How can I tell if my American Airlines flight has AAinflight wifi

In addition, it should show you on your boarding pass and the cabin crew should inform passengers about the availability and type of wi-fi service at the beginning of the flight.

American Airlines wifi cost?

North american flights.

There are two options if flying on an American Airlines flight within North America (within USA, USA to/from Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central America):

  • Monthly plan. You can purchase a plan which will allow access to inflight wifi for a month. This costs $49.95 for one device or $59.95 for two devices.
  • Pay as you go. You can purchase wifi access for the duration of the flight. It seems the cost depends on the duration of the flight and starts at $10.

International flights

You can only purchase wifi once you are onboard and there is no monthly plan available so it is on a flight-by-flight basis. The cost varies depending on the route, flight duration and the internet provider so you will have to log in to see what it will cost you to connect.

How good is American Airlines AAinflight wifi?

Many regular passengers give reviews that they always enjoy an excellent wifi connection on American Airlines flights. However, the speed and strength of wifi signals may change during the flight because they use GX satellites to connect to the internet, and satellite signal varies with location.

This passenger was very satisfied with American Airlines’ wifi:

How good is American Airlines Wifi - good

This passenger was definitely not impressed at all with aainflight wifi as they told American Airlines on Twitter:

How good is American Airlines Wifi - bad

This passenger also wasn’t happy with his $10 wifi purchase:

Is american airlines wifi good

Does American Airlines have free wifi?

American Airlines proudly boasts that “You can always access aa.com for free during your flight.” How generous of them to allow you to book and pay for another of their flights for free.

If you download the American Airlines App you can access the inflight entertainment using the wifi for free.

Incredibly, it seems that even first class passengers have to pay extra for wifi.

How to get wifi on American Airlines

If you are traveling with American Airlines and want to connect to their wifi, you should follow these steps.

Ideally you should download the American Airlines wifi app before boarding. This can be downloaded from the App Store or Google Play Store .

Once on board, if connecting on a cellphone, you should enable airplane mode/flight mode first. The in setting switch wifi on.

  • Connect to the “AA-Inflight” wifi signal
  • You should automatically be taken to the aainflight.com page. If not, open a browser and enter aainflight.com in the URL box.
  • Either log in if you have a monthly access plan or have pre-paid for your flight. Otherwise, purchase wifi access.

Can you make voice calls or texts using American Airlines wifi?

You cannot make voice calls through your mobile phone or through voice services such as Whatsapp or Skype using AA inflight wifi.

American Airlines does not provide an SMS text service like some other airlines do so you cannot send or receive normal texts.

You can of course send text messages using apps such as Whatsapp using the AAinflight wifi service if available.

Can I watch Netflix on American Airlines wifi?

You can access Netflix if the wifi is fast enough to stream. American Airlines does state “Browse the internet, check emails and stream video services like Netflix, Hulu and HBO.”

How to get an American Airlines wi-fi refund?

If you purchase the wifi service on American Airlines and it is not working well, you can speak to a flight attendant and ask them if they can do anything to improve the network speed.

If it is still not available or useable then you can request a refund from American Airlines via their customer services giving details of the flight and the complaint.

What to Look for in Mobile Hotspots

Mobile providers.

Some hotspots come with data plans included. You'll have to contract a data service to provide the connection if they do not. These providers are mostly the same as the cell phone providers the majority of people are already familiar with. AT&T, T-Mobile, and Solis all have plans tailored to different users. Check with your cell phone provider, as they may offer a better price to cellular customers.

Unlimited data plans are much less common for mobile hotspots than for cell phones. However, there are many plans available that should be sufficient for most uses. There are cost-effective pay-as-you-go plans and plans that offer great value plans. You can expect certain speeds up to some data limit, followed by connections at slower speeds from 3G to 4G LTE.

Expect to spend at least $100 to get a quality mobile hotspot. The price of each device will be influenced by whether or not it has an included data plan, the speeds it provides, and the coverage area.

Mobile hotspots have several advantages over phone hotspots. Because these devices are specifically designed to provide internet access, they offer stronger and more reliable reception. They can also cover more devices and are more secure if sharing with others.

Hotspots with unlimited data plans are not very common because cellular carriers do not have the same capacity as traditional providers. That said, the My Webspot 4G Pocket WiFi comes with unlimited data. Other carriers that offer unlimited plans include T-Mobile, Verizon, AT&T, and Visible (with some limitations).

American Airlines Finally Expands Free T-Mobile Wifi to Viasat Planes

' src=

Finally in June 2023, American now offers free wifi to T-Mobile customers on its entire narrow body fleet. Only exceptions are 50-seat planes that do not offer wifi. Also note that most widebody planes that usually fly long haul have Panasonic wifi and these are not included. These planes do occasionally cover domestic flights. So while American is now finally catching up to their competition among the Big Three US carriers, this is still somewhat limited compared to what they offer. It works for me as a T-Mobile user, but not so useful for others.

What is American’s in-flight wifi setup?

travel america wifi

Just as a reminder, the bulk of the American fleet has Viasat high speed wifi.  This includes the 300+ strong 737 fleet and more than 300 A321s. Gogo is on the larger regional jets operating as American Eagle, including CRJ-700 and CRJ-900, as well as the ERJ-170 and ERJ-175. The legacy US Airways fleet, which is most of the A-319 and all the A-320 in the fleet have Gogo 2KU high speed wifi. The 32 A319s that originally were ordered by legacy American Airlines have Viasat.  All of this is confusing, but thankfully now, at least for T-mobile users, wifi is free across the fleet?

Review: Sleep N’ Fly Sleep Lounge Doha, a Priority Pass Lounge

What is the T-Mobile offering?

travel america wifi

This benefit has changed a few times since it launched many years ago, but now that it covers both Gogo and Viasat , most domestic flights are covered. On mainline flights with Alaska, American, Delta and United, that means high speed wifi, often fast enough for streaming.

My T-Mobile plan is several generations old, but still sufficient for my needs, and most of all the price is right. This means I get an hour of free wifi onboard, and 4 flights a year with full coverage.  Some plans offer unlimited inflight wifi.

How does the American offering compare to other carriers?

To American I say, better late than never?  I guess? But for those that do not use T-Mobile, there is still no free option on American flights. And for those paying, pricing is steep, several times higher than their competition.  On longer flights with Viasat,  American does offer 20 minutes of free sponsored wifi, but I haven’t found this to be consistent.

Alaska, Southwest and United offer wifi for $8 per flight. United charges $2 more for those who aren’t Mileage Plus members. Alaska doesn’t have high speed wifi on their entire fleet yet which include this pricing plan, but are working on it. Delta is going towards free for all SkyMiles members, but have set a target of the end of 2023 for mainline fleet and 2024 for their regional fleet to complete this project.

What is a Portable WiFi Hotspot?

A portable WiFi hotspot is like your personal, on-the-go internet connection . It's a small device that uses cellular networks (the same ones your smartphone uses) and turns that connection into a WiFi signal for your laptop , tablet, or all your other remote work devices.

It's your escape from unreliable hotel WiFi, expensive data roaming charges while traveling, and the frustration of searching for usable public WiFi networks.

Okay, But Why Should I Need One?

Here's why a portable hotspot might be your new best friend:

  • Work From Anywhere, No Limits:  If you work remotely, a portable hotspot lets you work from practically any location with a cell signal.
  • Stress-Free Nomad Travels:  You can stop stressing about finding decent WiFi when you're out exploring. With your own hotspot, you have reliable internet for planning your trips , updating your digital nomad blog , or just getting directions.
  • Security Matters:  We've all heard the horror stories about the security risks of public WiFi. A hotspot gives you a private, encrypted connection that's way safer.

Which Type of Portable WiFi Are Suitable for Remote Work?

When it comes to choosing the right portable WiFi hotspot, you've got mainly three options:

1. SIM-based Modem Routers

These bad boys work with a local SIM card in every country you visit. eSIMs are great for maximum flexibility, but you'll need to research and buy a SIM card for each destination.

2. Portable Wi-Fi Hotspots

As the name suggests, these portable devices give you coverage in multiple countries without the hassle of messing with SIM cards. They're awesome for multi-country nomad trips or if you just want to keep things super simple while working remotely. They use their own eSIM system, so you won't need a physical SIM card. You can just join their plans through their eSIM-based system. You purchase data plans directly through the device's provider for specific regions or countries.

3. Your Phone's Mobile Hotspot

If you have an international roaming plan on your phone, you might be able to get away with using that and turning your phone into a hotspot (remember the battery drain, though!).

What Should I Consider Before Buying a Wi-Fi Hotspot Device For Remote Work?

4G mobile hotspots

So, now you have a pretty good idea of the best mobile hotspots for working remotely out there. But before you commit to a portable WiFi hotspot device, you should consider a few factors to ensure you're making the best choice for your needs . Let's see what to look for in a suitable device.

Data Plans and Cost

First, take a good look at their data plans, and weigh up the cost, any limitations, and how flexible they are.

You'll find some offer pay-as-you-go , while others want you to commit to a monthly subscription or even a contract . To get the best bang for your buck, think about your usage habits and find a plan that fits like a glove without emptying your wallet. Plus, check if the device lets you switch plans easily , just in case your data needs to change from month to month.

Coverage and Compatibility

Next, you should ensure it's compatible with your favorite carriers and can tag along to the countries on your travel list .

Different gadgets support various networks and frequencies , so do some detective work on coverage areas to ensure you stay connected no matter where you roam . And if you're a frequent traveler and digital nomad like us, go for a MiFi device that plays well with multiple regions .

Battery Life

As a remote worker, you also need a portable WiFi device with a battery that won't quit . Look for one with enough juice to keep you connected during your travels without constantly hunting for a power outlet.

If you can find a replaceable or external battery device, even better! But remember, battery life can vary depending on things like signal strength and how many devices are connected .

Speed and Connectivity

We know that fast and reliable internet is like the Holy Grail for remote workers. So, when checking out portable WiFi devices, pay attention to their max speeds and how many devices they can handle at once .

If you're part of a remote team or have a bunch of gadgets to connect, make sure the device can cope with it. Just keep in mind that actual speeds can change depending on network traffic and coverage where you're at .

Security Features

You've gotta keep your connection safe and secure while working remotely. So, pick a portable WiFi device that's got your back with solid security features like password protection , VPN compatibility , and automatic updates . With these defenses, you can work and travel with peace of mind, knowing you're protected from cyber security threats.

Size and Portability

Last but not least, size matters when you're a remote professional who works remotely from one country to the other, and packing light is absolutely necessary.

Go for a compact, lightweight mobile hotspot device that's easy to slip into your backpack or pocket without weighing you down. Find a tough yet user-friendly design to enjoy stress-free connectivity wherever you travel.

Alternatives to Portable Internet Hotspots for Remote Workers

Alternatives to 4g mobile hotspots

While a mobile hotspot can be a great solution, other options are available to you if you know where to look. Below are some alternative connectivity options to consider.

International SIM Cards

An international SIM card can be used in multiple countries, preventing you from buying a new SIM card when you cross a border. In addition to international roaming plans, many companies offer affordable data plans that can be activated for a certain amount of time or data usage .

This option can be helpful for digital nomads who stay in one location for an extended period or prefer to use their cell phones only as a hotspot. Some companies that offer international SIM cards are OneSIM Card or TravelSIM .

If you don't want the hassle of changing SIM cards every time you switch networks or work remotely from another country, then eSIMs are the best alternative. With an eSIM, you can easily activate a new plan through your phone data settings without the hassle of visiting a local store or waiting in line at the airport to buy physical SIM cards.

eSIMs can be super useful if you are like us and you value convenience and flexibility over anything else. Nowadays, many great providers such as Holafly offer reliable eSIMs worldwide, giving you the chance to stay connected wherever you are.

Local Prepaid Data Plans

Another option is to purchase a local SIM card or prepaid data plan in the country you're working remotely from.

This option can be more affordable than using an international SIM card or a portable WiFi hotspot device , and you can take advantage of local discounts or promotions. However, this option is also more time-consuming and requires research to find the best plan for your needs.

Coworking Spaces and Cafés with Free WiFi

If you're looking for a temporary solution , you can always rely on co-working spaces or cafes with free WiFi.

Many cafés offer free WiFi, and co-working spaces allow you to get your own dedicated workspace with fast internet speeds. These options can be ideal for remote workers who only need to work a few hours or want a change of scenery . However, keep in mind that not all cafes or co-working spaces offer reliable internet access , so it's best to research beforehand.

So, What's The Best Internet Hotspot For Remote Work?

After checking out tons of hotspots, we've realized there's no one-size-fits-all answer for every remote worker . Each gadget has unique perks and quirks, catering to various needs and wallets.

If you're a digital nomad who wants it all, the Simo Solis Lite has got your back. For remote teams needing a powerful connection, look no further than the Netgear Nighthawk M1 , which can connect up to 20 devices. If you're watching your budget, the Huawei E5576-508 4G has you covered, while the GlocalMe G4 Pro is perfect for those who love convenience and want to avoid bothering with SIM cards.

The sleek Sapphire 3 by TravelWiFi keeps things simple and hassle-free, while the pay-as-you-go Keepgo hotspot is perfect for flexibility. For those looking for fast internet speeds, both the Inseego MiFi M2000 and Nighthawk M6 Pro are top choices.

So, what's the bottom line? The best mobile hotspot for remote work comes down to your preferences, travel plans, and connectivity needs . Weigh the pros and cons of each device, and you'll find the perfect sidekick for your nomadic adventures!

The Great Outdoors

The 8 best unlocked portable Wi-Fi hotspots for travelers and digital nomads

An unlocked portable Wi-Fi hotspot is a must for travelers, digital nomads, or backpackers. Here are our top picks for portability, speed, and network coverage.

Netgear

As a digital nomad you’re either strapping up your hiking boots to hit the local trails, or flying to Mexico for a week of margaritas and sunshine. And with remote work becoming more common, a life spent hopping between countries is finally within reach for many of us. But life on the road, or in the woods, lacks one necessary modern convenience: an internet connection.

Fortunately, portable Wi-Fi hotspots are the perfect solution for travelers and digital nomads to stay connected. These compact devices provide a high-speed connection wherever you go, so you can get your work done (and pay the bills) while exploring new locales or camping beneath towering evergreens.

How do mobile Wi-Fi hotspots work?

A portable Wi-Fi hotspot is a pocketable device that uses a cellular signal to create your own Wi-Fi network. These hotspots typically output both 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi connections, and connect to the internet through mobile networks that transmit cellular data through radio waves, called frequencies. This means that you can connect your laptop , tablet, or smartphone to the internet even if there is no public Wi-Fi available. Portable Wi-Fi hotspots are sometimes also called "Mi-Fi" devices.

Features to look for in a Wi-Fi hotspot

Prepaid data packages vs. SIM card

To get your portable Wi-Fi device connected to the internet, you will need to purchase a prepaid data plan or local SIM card. If you plan to use your Wi-Fi hotspot for international travel, look for a device that has prepaid data plans available. Purchasing a prepaid plan prior to leaving on a trip means you can skip the hassle of locating a foreign service provider and picking up a SIM card.

If you're planning on using your hotspot primarily in the U.S. and North America, purchasing a SIM card from a major carrier like AT&T or T-Mobile will get you the best network coverage. I recommend this option for campers , hikers , or van-lifers that require an internet connection in remote locations.

Supported networks and frequencies

The frequencies used to transmit data vary depending on the region or country you're in and the carrier you're on. You need to keep an eye out for which frequencies your hotspot will support.

The most common networks and their frequencies include:

  • 2G/3G : The second- and third-generation of wireless technology. These networks run on either GSM (Global System for Mobiles) or CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) frequencies. GSM is more widely used and better for travelers.
  • 4G or LTE : This network is currently the global standard and offers the fastest connection speeds. 4G transmits through LTE frequencies, and only uses GSM or CDMA as a fallback when there is no LTE connection available.
  • 5G: The fifth-generation mobile network technology provides increased reliability, speed, and network capacity, but global coverage is currently only at 25 percent . Outside of major cities, 4G LTE and 3G networks are the most widely available.

Luckily, device makers don’t want to build a different device for every frequency, so most Wi-Fi hotspots are compatible with 2G, 3G, and 4G LTE. Keep in mind that your hotspot will only work in areas where there is cellular coverage , no matter the frequency. Oftentimes, remote locations will not have a signal since there aren't any nearby cellular towers or the closest one can't reach it.

Even if we just want to post on social media while airborne, inflight access is valuable and becoming more common . Many airlines now offer free Wi-Fi. Some airlines have even started implementing gate-to-gate connectivity, so you will always be online.

And luckily, there are travel rewards cards that offer the opportunity to stay connected at 30,000 feet in the air. The key to free Wi-Fi may already be in your wallet.

Credit cards that offer inflight Wi-Fi passes

Several cobranded airline cards provide statement credits and discounts toward Wi-Fi purchases on their respective airlines.

Alaska Airlines cobranded credit cards

For Alaska Airlines flyers, the Alaska Airlines Visa® credit card and Alaska Airlines Visa® Business card both offer 20% back on Alaska Airlines inflight purchases, including Wi-Fi.

American Airlines cobranded credit cards

Another option is 25% back in statement credits for Wi-Fi purchases made on the CitiBusiness® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® Mastercard® .

The information for the AAdvantage Aviator Red, the AAdvantage Aviator Silver and CitiBusiness AAdvantage Platinum cards has been collected independently by The Points Guy. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.

Just pay for passes with the card, and your account will automatically be credited for the cost.

However, if you don't have that particular Southwest card, you can receive 25% back on inflight purchases (including Wi-Fi) with the Southwest Rapid Rewards Priority Credit Card , Southwest Rapid Rewards Plus Credit Card , Southwest Rapid Rewards Premier Credit Card or Southwest Rapid Rewards Premier Business Credit Card .

United Airlines cobranded credit cards

United Airlines offers a similar 25% discount on Wi-Fi (and other onboard purchases) through its MileagePlus credit cards , issued by Chase.

Certain American Express and Bank of America cards

It's also worth noting that airline fee credits on certain American Express cards like The Platinum Card® from American Express and Bank of America cards like the Bank of America® Premium Rewards® credit card will generally not cover inflight Wi-Fi purchases on your selected airline. However, that is changing with some of the newer Wi-Fi systems on planes .

You must enroll in advance and choose a preferred airline for American Express cards. With Bank of America, credits only apply to U.S.-based airlines on flights departing from the U.S.

Choosing the best of the best from this list of portable Wi-fi choices might be a little tricky and even daunting to some extent. That’s natural, considering that all these products are excellent. Hence, here, we narrow down the options that different people might consider best according to their best features:

  • Best value for money: Alcatel Linkzone

  • Best basic portable Wi-Fi: TP-LINK M7350 Hotspot

On-the-go devices have changed and transformed the way we travel, whether it’s the best portable chargers for travel , the best wireless mouse for travel , or portable Wifi devices for traveling. There are several factors you need to keep in mind when it comes to selecting the best portable Wifi hotspot devices. So, what are they? Read on.

Battery life

Battery life is important when it comes to a portable Wifi device – after all, you’re going to need internet continuously, and you don’t want to run out of battery when you’re in the middle of nowhere. The best bit is that most good portable wifi devices have batteries that last around 10 hours at the very least. That said, you don’t need to worry if you’re traveling somewhere with easy access to electricity, so you can charge your device overnight. But, looking at the battery life is important if you’re going that has patchy electricity too.

Weight, size, and display

The best portable WiFi hotspots are small enough to carry you everywhere. After all, if it’s heavy or needs to be lugged around, what’s the point of portable Wi-Fi for traveling? Go for models that are lightweight and slimline. In fact, many excellent models are cleverly compact and even smaller than your smartphone.

These portable Wifi devices for traveling might be small, but they are still mighty useful, and most even have in-built displays. This is very useful for determining the signal strength of the Wifi, how much data you have left, and the remaining battery life as well. The best ones might even offer bonus features such as touchscreen modes or SMS messages.

Wi-Fi support

Perhaps the most important factor is the Wifi support itself. Since some mobile internet providers are better as compared to others, the coverage and support you receive from WiFi hotspots could also vary. For example, a 2.4GHz bandwidth offers more coverage at an extended range but tends to transmit the data at slower speeds. On the other hand, a 5GHz bandwidth might provide a smaller range but transmits data at much faster speeds.

Card reader

Finally, some of the best portable Wifi hotspots even come with the ability to read microSD memory cards, which is very useful for storing and accessing files from laptops. What’s more, you can even share the stored files with trusted people who’re using the same network and want them to access the same.

Essentially, portable mobile hotspots have the same cellular network as your smartphones. So, you can either get a data-only plan for them or add them as a separate device on your shared data plan. Dongles, on the other hand, are akin to USD flash drives and come straight from a carrier. You stick it into a USB slot on your laptop, and you’re still going to need a separate data plan as it is. These might be cheaper to invest in than portable Wifi, but where the portable Wifi devices score over dongles is that dongles might require special software. What’s more, their setup can be annoyingly slow and might include a ton of technical hurdles. Also, portable Wifi helps you track internet usage, can be used by multiple devices at once and has a much longer battery life as compared to a dongle.

Biden’s Buy America push for EV chargers gets a jolt

By James Bikales | 03/12/2024 07:00 AM EDT

Administration officials hope incentives will help the U.S. stake a claim in the nascent industry before competitors like China.

Electric vehicle chargers sit outside a Ford dealership.

Blink Charging aims to produce 50,000 chargers per year at its newly expanded manufacturing facility in Maryland. David Zalubowski/AP

BOWIE, Maryland — Generous federal incentives for electric vehicle chargers are spurring the growth of a new domestic manufacturing industry to build the equipment needed to power the cars of the future — including at a new plant here in the federal government’s backyard.

Blink Charging cut the ribbon Monday for its new global headquarters and an expanded manufacturing facility at the suburban site, where it intends to eventually ramp up output to 50,000 EV chargers a year.

“Just three years ago, we barely made any chargers here in the United States,” White House climate adviser Ali Zaidi told reporters ahead of the ceremony. “Today, we can make hundreds of thousands of them, employing hundreds of folks like the ones employed at this facility here in Maryland.”

Since the passage of the bipartisan infrastructure law in 2021, companies have announced $372 million in investments for EV charger manufacturing that will support nearly 5,000 new jobs, according to tracking data from the research firm Atlas Public Policy and BlueGreen Alliance, a coalition of environmental and labor organizations.

Nearly 100 Holland America cruise passengers become ill in norovirus outbreak

travel america wifi

Nearly 100 Holland America Line passengers got sick in a norovirus outbreak.

Among 2,522 guests on the cruise line’s Koningsdam ship, 98 reported being ill, along with 12 crew members, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention . Their main symptoms were diarrhea and vomiting.

Koningsdam is currently sailing a round-trip cruise visiting Hawaii and French Polynesia that departed from San Diego on Feb. 17, according to CruiseMapper . Holland America and the ship’s crew increased cleaning and disinfection and isolated sick passengers and crew following the outbreak, among other steps, the CDC said.

“At Holland America Line, the safety and well-being of our guests and crew is our top priority. During the current voyage, a number of guests on Koningsdam reported symptoms of gastrointestinal illness,” a spokesperson for the line told USA TODAY in an emailed statement. “The cases were mostly mild and quickly resolving. We initiated enhanced sanitation protocols to minimize further transmission and the incidence of cases has since declined significantly.”

The news comes after more than 125 Cunard Line passengers got sick in a gastrointestinal illness outbreak earlier this year. Norovirus cases have also risen in the U.S. in recent weeks.

The CDC logged 14 cruise ship outbreaks that met its threshold for public notification in 2023, more than any year between 2017 and 2019. Norovirus was listed as the causative agent in all but one.

The virus is frequently associated with cruises, but Ben Lopman, a professor of epidemiology at Emory University’s Rollins School of Public Health, told USA TODAY last year that cruises make up a "tiny minority of norovirus outbreaks.” The majority take place in health care settings such as nursing homes.
