The city is located in southern Poland. It belongs to the Malopolskie (lesser Poland) voivodeship. The closest major city near Zakopane is  Kraków .

Zakopane is very close to Slovakia. You can pass the border on foot or by car - there is no physical border between Poland and Slovakia as they both belong to the Schengen Zone.

The best Zakopane attractions are scenic mountains, unique folklore, wooden huts and handcraft, well preserved local traditions and culture.

  • Małe Ciche - a small village counting 850 people located 5 miles from Zakopane and on the East side of the Tatras (High Tatras). Google Maps link to Małe Ciche village .

Zakopane is an attractive resort, but one of the best things to do in Zakopane is hiking.

The Tatra Mountains, also known as the Polish Alps , are the highest mountains in the central-eastern part of Europe but their total length is only 57 km.

Tatras are divided into three major groups:

  • Western Tatras (highest peak Bystra 2248 m)
  • High Tatras (highest peak Gerlach 2655 m)
  • Bielskie Tatras (highest peak Hawrań 2152 m)

The mission of Tatra National Park: protect and help to understand the nature and culture of the Tatras, enabling to experience it by current and future generations.

The most significant advantage of the Tatras is that governors of the National Park protect nature but also maintain all the trails.

Advantages of hiking in Tatra Mountains:

  • Many paradise-like spots and viewpoints.
  • Excellent hiking paths, visible and colourful route marks and signposts.
  • Well-preserved unique nature.
  • Magnificent mountains.
  • World-class rescue service and online weather alerts.

Camping or hiking in Tatra National Park after down is against the rules and may result in a fine. For more info check out  this article .

Beds in mountain huts are limited and require booking well in advance. Therefore it is often necessary to spend the night in Zakopane city. But on the bright side, the most spectacular viewpoints in Tatra Mountains are accessible within a day hike (including return time).

There are two national parks in Tatras:

🇵🇱 Tatra National Park of Poland (TPN).

🇸🇰 Tatra National Park of Slovakia (TANAP).

Zakopane popularity

Tourists in Zakopane

Each year two million tourists visit Tatra National Park of Poland which is half the visits number of very popular Yosemite Park in the USA. One million travelers visit Tatra Mountains only in July and August !

In the past Zakopane was known for goat cheese production and wisest shepherds in the country. In 1899 the first rail track from Kraków to Zakopane was opened. Tourism has grown significantly since then.

In the near past access to Zakopane (and Poland) was restricted for most of the nations. The communist government at that time wasn't appealing to anyone, and international tourism almost didn't exist. Fortunately,  communism ended for good in 1989 .

In the 90s Poland still lacked the infrastructure, hotels and popularity to attract international tourism.

Luckily Poland has been in NATO and the European Union since 2004 and now has first-class infrastructure . Zakopane is finally ready for global tourism but still remains one of the hidden gems in Poland.

Zakopane travel essentials

what to do in zakopane

Tatra highlanders say that there are 10 months of winter in the mountains, and the rest of the year is summer.

This is a bit exaggerated but it's important to remember that the weather in Zakopane is unpredictable and it's good to come prepared.

I've divided the below Zakopane packing lists into summer and winter.

What to pack if you travel to Zakopane in the summer?

Here's a suggested packing list if you'd like to explore Zakopane attractions and hike to Morskie Oko:

  • Lightweight and breathable tops.
  • Shorts and comfortable pants for hiking or walking.
  • A swimsuit if you plan to visit thermal pools or lakes.
  • Light rain jacket or windbreaker for unexpected weather changes.
  • Comfortable walking shoes or sandals.
  • Casual clothing for strolling through the town or enjoying outdoor cafes.

Outdoor gear:

  • Daypack for hiking and exploring.
  • Sunhat and sunglasses for sun protection.
  • Sunscreen with a high SPF.
  • Insect repellent.

  • Wet wipes or hand sanitizer.

Clothing accessories:

  • Hat or cap for sun protection.
  • Lightweight scarf or shawl for cooler evenings.
  • Waterproof jacket.

Cash  - while credit cards are widely accepted, having some cash on hand can be useful for small purchases or places that may not accept cards, e.x. bus drivers. If you plan to get to the trailhead by a private bus, have cash with you.

Take these with you if you visit Zakopane in winter

Winter gear:

  • Snow boots with good traction for walking in snow and ice.
  • If you plan on hiking and/or skiing in Zakopane, you can easily rent all the necessary equipment on-site. If you will be hiking in the higher parts of Tatra Mountains, remember about  crampons and pickax  (available in rental shops in Zakopane and mountain huts as well).

Places to stay in Zakopane - suburbs

Find perfect accommodation between city center and mountains.

zakopane suburb

It's kind of best of both worlds. On the one hand, you might be closer to the mountains and on the other hand still have nearby aqua parks, museums, bars and restaurants. Plenty to do in case of bad weather.

Best time to visit Zakopane

hikes in zakopane

If you want to mainly explore attractions in Zakopane, it's best to come in May . The days are long, there's quite a lot of sun and there are not that many travellers and hikers yet. Prices are also a bit lower than in the high season.

But hiking in Tatra Mountains in May isn't very easy. There's still snow and ice on the trails in higher parts of the Tatras. Some trails are closed until June 15th. The weather may be harsh and windy.

If you'd like to explore Tatra Mountains (especially hike in High Tatras ), come in September or October . Autumn in the mountains is stunning, there are fewer hikers and the trails are still open. There might be snowfall but the snow melts quickly. There's no thunderstorm or avalanche risk in Tatra Mountains in September or October.

Best places to stay in Zakopane

hikes from zakopane

Here are my recommendations for places to stay in Zakopane. I've checked the ratings, reviews, and location on booking.com and read about the amenities each hotel offers.

Have a look at the below:

Aries Hotel & SPA Zakopane  - lovely 5-star hotel located in Zakopane center., just a 5-minute walk from Krupówki Street. There is an indoor pool and wellness center. Guests appreciate the location, tasty breakfast and beautiful interior.

Willa Leluja   - great option if you're looking for an apartment with a kitchen. It's located close to Krupówki Street (1 km). Besides location, guests appraise amazing mountain views from balconies and the cleanliness and spaciousness of the apartments.

Hostel 1902   - nice budget-friendly accommodation. The hostel is located on Krupówki Street - it's ideal for those who want to stay close to the main tourist attractions in Zakopane. Guests are happy with the professional and helpful staff, comfortable beds and cleanliness of the hostel.

Shepherds - the Highland Folklore in Zakopane

Shepherds in Zakopane

They are considered the wisest men in south Poland. Tatra Highlanders are able to predict the weather and are always eager to share truths about life.

They say that native citizens of Zakopane have rooted the desire to live as shepherds driven by generations of tradition. Many valleys in Tatra National Park are available for shepherds to sustain local traditions and culture. They are famous for producing the tasty and one of the cleanest cheeses called oscypek .

Working in Tatra Mountains is difficult and the weather doesn't spoil Tatra Highlanders. Fortunately,  they are rewarded with excellent cheese and breathtaking mountains to admire.

The shepherding tradition in Zakopane is very old . Farming wasn't possible due to bad grounds and lack of proper space.

Zakopane Highlanders have very characteristic and colourful outfits. They play, dance and sing during their festivals. I highly recommend checking if there are any traditional Tatra Highlanders festivals  during your visit - it's one of the most unique things to do in Zakopane.

Interestingly, Zakopane folklore is very present and vivid. Many locals wear their colourful outfits every day for their own pride or rich traditions and to promote their unique cultural identity.

Before you go for hikes in Zakopane

zakopane hiking trails

There are many hikes in Zakopane to choose from.

For the start, consider simple walks in the beautiful valleys like:

  • Chocholowska Valley
  • Kościeliska Valley
  • Gąsienicowa Valley
  • slightly more challenging  Valley of Five Lakes

If you want to hike the tops of the mountains, the most famous peaks are:

  • Kasprowy Wierch
  • Red Peaks (Czerwone Wierchy)
  • Kościelec (also known as the Polish Matterhorn)

You may also visit scenic Tatra Mountains lakes:

  • Morskie Oko lake
  • Black Gąsienicowe lake
  • Strbske Pleso and Popradske Pleso if you climb down from Rysy to Slovakia

What I like about all these places in Tatra Mountains is that they're fairly easily available - all these are day hikes from Zakopane.

I recommend planning loop hikes which is also quite easy as there are lots of trails to choose from. If that can't be done you may return the same way or hike from the North to the South (Slovakia), and return to Poland by taxi or bus.

✅ Before heading into the mountains,  you need to have a hiking map .

During all our trips to the Tatra mountains, we always had a map, and it was a big help every single time. We don't rely only on electronic devices - they can't be 100% trusted in the mountains.

✅  Tatra Mountains weather guide  - "proper preparation prevents poor performance".

✅  Practical information on hiking in Poland  - good to know before you hit the trail.

✅ Tatra Mountains huts - if you wish to sleep in the mountains.

Hikes from Zakopane - trailheads

hike zakopane

Here are the most popular trailheads in Zakopane:

⛰️ Chochołowska Valley parking - also is known as Witów Siwa Polana

The entrance is located in Western Tatras. It is the best starting point for easy hiking to the Chochołowska Polana and mountain shelter. This trailhead is a bit less popular than Kościeliska Valley entry.

Chocholowska Valley trailhead - Google Maps .

⛰️  Kiry - also known as Kościeliska Valley Parking

Located in Western Tatras, it's one of the most popular entries on this side of the mountains. Great for hiking the Kościeliska Valley and Czerwone Wierchy (Red Peaks). Kiry is a small settlement right next to Zakopane.

⛰️  Dolina Strążyska (Strążyska Valley)

An interesting starting point for exploring Western Tatras. It's slightly less popular than the other trailheads.

⛰️  Kuźnice

Kuźnice is a Zakopane district surrounded by National Park forests. There's a cable car to the famous Kasprowy Wierch mountain in Western Tatras. It's the preferred trailhead for Kasprowy Wierch, Giewont, Czarny Staw Gąsienicowy and Kościelec Mountain.

You cannot drive into Kuźnice . You can get there by bus from Zakopane center or leave the car at the parking on Bronisława Czecha Street ( Google Maps link ) or Karłowicza Street ( Google Maps link ) and walk to the trailhead/cable car.

⛰️  Zakopane Cyrhla

In Toporowa Cyrhla you can hike through beautiful forests into the astonishing Hala Gąsienicowa, Murowaniec mountain shelter or Nosal mountain. The advantage of these trails is that there are fewer hikers.

Zakopane Cyrhla - Google Maps .

⛰️  Palenica Białczańska - also known as Morskie Oko parking

It's the most famous and main entry to the High Tatras - it's the best starting point for the Morskie Oko and Rysy hikes. It has the biggest parking with 450 parking places. Also, Łysa Polana and Wierch Poroniec parking are backup parking in case Palenica Białczańska is full.

If you will be traveling by car, you need to buy a Morskie Oko parking ticket in advance . You may purchase it here .

Kasprowy Wierch (6519ft / 1987m) is the most visited mountain in Polish Tatra National Park because it is accessible via cable car. The lift's lower station is in Kuźnice. It is a thrilling experience and the views are breathtaking .

If for some reason you can't hike in the mountains I highly recommend using the cable car to get to the top of Kasprowy. You can check the prices and buy the ticket here .

Bear in mind that it's not allowed to drive to Kuźnice . You can get there by bus from Zakopane center or leave the car at the parking on Bronisława Czecha Street ( Google Maps link ) or Karłowicza Street ( Google Maps link ) and walk to the trailhead/cable car.

Morskie Oko lake in High Tatras

morskie oko lake

Morskie Oko lake is the most famous place in Tatra Mountains. Many travellers consider it also one of the most unique places in Poland. This beautiful postglacial lake is surrounded by the High Tatras - the landscape is amazing!

Morskie Oko hike is easy and suitable for all kinds of hikers, including families traveling with baby in a pram.

If you travel by car, remember to purchase a ticket to Morskie Oko parking in advance (you may do it here ).

Rysy - the highest mountain in Poland

Peak of the Rysy mountain

Rysy mountain is the highest peak and one of the more popular hikes in Poland. The route is considered difficult and steep and includes a few exposure points.  It is still doable for inexperienced people in the summertime but it is challenging. I recommend getting prepared before such a hike in High Tatras.

The route to the Rysy from Zakopane goes via Morskie Oko - one of the most beautiful places in Tatra Mountains. If you don't feel ready to hike the very steep slope of Rysy you can just stay at Morskie Oko or Czarny Staw Pod Rysami (Black Pond Under Rysy - 1583 m) and enjoy the surrounding mountains and nature.

Five Lakes Valley - moon-like scenery in High Tatras

On the picture Joanna with her sister in the view of Five Lakes Valley near Zawrat

I love Joanna's (co-founder) description of this place: "It's like a moon surface but on earth". So you don't have to wait for Elon Musk's space travel agency - you can do a 1-day hike from Zakopane in the High Tatras to the Valley of Five Ponds 😉

For me, hiking there is one of the best things to do in Zakopane. Absolutely go there!

Red Peaks (Czerwone Wierchy) - the most beautiful hike in Western Tatras

Red Peaks_Czerwone Wierchy_Tatra mountains

Hiking Red Peaks at the end of September

Red Peaks hike is quite long but the amazing views of Western Tatras reward all the efforts. The route includes 4 mountains , each one above 2000 metres. You'll hike on a breathtaking ridge and admire the Tatra Mountains in their full glory.

If you would like to make the hike easier, you may get to Kasprowy Wierch by cable car and start off from there.

It is essential to prepare for rainy weather, no matter if you're planning to enjoy Zakopane attractions and only try the Morskie Oko hike or you're going to spend a whole week hiking in Tatra Mountains.

Krupówki street

Busiest and prettiest place in Zakopane. A vibrant street in the center, it is the best place for buying souvenirs and for shopping in general. There are also lots of restaurants and pubs where you may sample traditional Highlander food (or sushi or Mexican cuisine, everything really) and try Polish vodka.

Also, many historic and tourist attractions are located on Krupówki Street, e.x.:

  • Church st. Family built from Tatra rocks in 1876
  • Tatra Museum functioning since 1888
  • Art Gallery of Zamoysky
  • Lovely pond with a wooden bridge

Zakopane water parks

If you would like to relax and try some relaxing things to do in Zakopane, you might be interested in the below options:

CHOCHOLOW THERMAL BATHS

The biggest waterpark in southern Poland. It offers numerous indoor and outdoor pools with hot thermal water (there are about 30 pools!), many different kinds of saunas, slides, a kid's zone, SPA facilities, a sports centre, restaurants and a pool bar.

We especially liked the spacious infrared sauna with big windows from which we admired the panoramic view of the Tatra mountains.

If you would like to visit this modern water park and not waste time in lines, you can get a full-access ticket in advance here .

BIAŁKA TATRZANSKA THERMAL BATHS

It's a smaller waterpark than Chocholow Thermal Baths but also a fun place to visit. It offers a few thermal pools with a beautiful mountain view and several saunas, outdoor and indoor.

Bialka Tatrzanska Thermal Baths are divided into the quiet and loud zone. The latter offers water attractions: waterslides, a kid's fun zone, outdoor pools, waterfalls, etc.

You can get a skip-the-line ticket along with hotel pick-up here .

Crocus flower in Polish mountains

Alpinarium is a mountain botanical garden. This outstanding place is home to about 600 types of mountain plants. There are also endangered species and plants which grow nowhere else.

It’s a very nice place to let our hair down after the hustle and bustle of Krupówki street. Visiting the Alpinarium will also be one of the best things to do in Zakopane for nature admirers.

Zakopane city park

The playground in the park is excellent for children. Also on the terrain of the park, there is a beautiful traditional wooden Jutrzenka Villa. I like this park and go for a stroll there whenever I don't hike in the mountains.

View from Gubalowka mountain zakopane

Gubałówka (3674ft / 1120m) is a popular mountain situated in the north part of Zakopane. There are a few different ways to get to Gubałówka mountain:

The Great Krokiew ski jump

zakopane attractions

The biggest ski jump in Poland. You may walk up or ride up in a chair lift. Great view from the top and observatory. You can slide down in the pontoon if you're up for a bit of adrenaline 🙂

The entry is paid and once you're inside you can buy a ticket to the slide. They only accept cash (there's a cash machine nearby). There are lots of small shops and food stands at the foot of the ski jump. Paid parking is also available.

Chochołów is a living and functioning village that is also an open-air museum of settlements and folklore.

It is located 12 miles from Zakopane but definitely worth a visit. The huts were built in the XIX century in the traditional Tatra Highlander style and are well-preserved and used up to date.

You can visit this unique open-air museum together with Chochołów thermal baths.

Parrot house in Zakopane

Zakopane has its own "parrotarium" (Papugarnia Egoztyczne Zakopane). It's one of the most interesting family things to do in Zakopane - kids love this place! And it is a unique occasion to take a selfie with a parrot on your arm - the parrots are used to the presence of people and are very curious, especially if you have food 😉 (you can buy parrot food on site).

Parrot House Zakopane features over 100 birds and it's the biggest attraction of this type in southern Poland.

Address:  Droga do Olczy 11, Zakopane

Opening hours: every day 10:00 am. to 7:00 pm.

  • Free parking
  • Ability to make a selfie with parrots
  • Great for families
  • Parrots can sit on your arm
  • Maybe too many visitors during high season

Traditional Tatra Mountains buildings

mountain hut in polish mountains

Modern wooden huts © shaiith / Adobe Stock

Traditional Tatra Mountains buildings are wooden and beautifully ornamented - they reflect the rich cultural and architectural heritage of the Tatra region. These buildings are designed to withstand the harsh mountain environment

Typical characteristics of these houses are:

  • Gable roofs - steeply pitched gable roofs are a common feature, designed to shed heavy snowfall during the winter months.
  • Decorative woodwork - Tatra Highlander artisans are skilful - they create unique wood carvings and decorative elements. These carvings often present traditional folk motifs, geometric patterns, or scenes from nature.
  • Balconies and verandas - to make Tatra buildings even more beautiful 🙂
  • Colorful facades - the most popular colors are red, green, and blue.
  • High windows
  • Stone foundations - to provide stability in the mountainous terrain, many buildings have stone foundations. I like this element - it adds an authentic touch to the architecture.

Zakopane dark secrets

Smog in autumn and winter

smog in zakopane

Winter smog in Zakopane © Irina84 / Adobe Stock

Lots of Zakopane citizens use coal and wood for central heating. Additionally, the location of Zakopane makes it difficult to naturally ventilate the city, which results in high air pollution during the cold months.

The level of dust in the wintertime sometimes is record-high and can reach PM10 over 400 µg multiple times - where 200 µg is considered very high.

The problem doesn't exist in warm months .

If you happen to visit Zakopane in winter, it's best to keep checking the air quality with one of the online air monitors (e.x. this one ). Zakopane has multiple measuring devices installed.

Halny wind (Foehn wind)

It is a very strong wind blowing into the valleys dry and warm air. It can be very sudden and cause a lot of infrastructure damage.

"Halny" is also influencing the people's mood. Because of rapid atmospheric pressure changes people with cardiovascular and heart issues may experience difficulties.

This strong wind also influences the mood, people become nervous and grumpy. Suicide rate rises! Also, it's reported that animals act strangely during that time.

Halny wind occurs most often in autumn and early spring.

Traffic jams

zakopane city

Zakopane city might not be your best travel destination if:

📌 You're vegan or on a diet. Traditional Tatra Highlander food tends to be meaty and high in calories . Pork knuckle, roasted sausages, bigos (a hearty dish made with a variety of meats and sauerkraut), sauerkraut soup (it always contains a greasy type of meat) - these are examples of typical food served in the majority of restaurants in Zakopane. However, there are a few restaurants in Zakopane which offer vegan and/or vegetarian food - see below.

📌 Crowds  make you angry. Zakopane is popular among Poles and international travellers alike.

📌 You're bothered by  unpredictable weather and packing additional clothing. Traveling to Zakopane is a bit demanding when it comes to windproof jackets, waterproof boots, gaiters, etc.

📌 You'd like to eat out a lot but travel on a budget. Zakopane restaurants and pubs (especially in the center) are pricey.

Zakopane -Town under the Tatra Mountains Getting to know the winter capital of Poland

I wholeheartedly believe that Poland has it all – absolutely breathtaking cities, tranquil seaside, beautiful lakes… there is even a desert! But on the very south of the country, one more absolutely magical gem awaits your visit – the Tatra Mountains. It is at their foot where you will find Zakopane.

Located a little over 100 kilometres (just under 70 miles) from the capital of Lesser Poland, Zakopane is the ultimate one-day tour destination from Krakow for people who want to experience something extraordinary. Often referred to as the winter capital of Poland , the town offers a perfect blend of outdoorsy fun, modern hotels, beautiful views and fascinating traditions – everyone will find something for themselves!

What does the name Zakopane mean?

Contrary to the names of most cities, the word zakopane actually has a meaning and is commonly used in everyday language. It means... buried  (but only in passive voice, so you could say that skarby zostały zakopane  - the treasure has been buried , but you can't say they buried the treasure  using the same word. The beauty of Polish language, ladies and gentlemen! :)). The name " Zakopane " originates from the distinctive geographical location of the town. The term comes from times when these lands were uninhabited by people.

But why has that become the name of the town? Well, there's a folk legend for it.

A shepherd who, staying with his sheep on a loincloth on the southern slope of Gubałówka, beautifully sunny and warm, with a beautiful view of the Tatra Mountains on the horizon, decided to check whether this place is suitable for a permanent settlement. He buried an oat seed, and after returning there later he saw that the seed had grown up beautifully and gave off a good crop. And from the burial of this grain, this place was called Zakopane.

Isn't that a cute story? Initially, the Zakopane region served as a refuge for shepherds seeking shelter from the harsh mountain conditions and the dangers associated with the alpine climate. The settlement was nestled in a valley, sheltered from winds and extreme weather. This natural location was somewhat "buried" amid the surrounding mountains.

Officially founded in the second half of the 19th century as a mountain settlement, Zakopane has since become a popular leisure destination and a tourist hub recognized both in Poland and abroad. The name reflects both the town's position in the valley and its historical roots as a refuge in the mountains.

What is Zakopane famous for and why should you visit?

The most important things about this 30 000 town in southern Poland are the majestic Tatra Mountains and the unique folklore. Oh, and oscypki .

Definitely oscypki .

The Tatra mountains

There is plenty of reasons to visit the Polish mountains, I mean – just look at the photos in this post… I will give you some more specific recommendations though, don't worry! Regardless of the season – you will not be disappointed . Whether you are into hiking, skiing, snowboarding, or laying on a balcony of luxury hotel sipping mulled wine – Zakopane’s got you covered.

While Zakopane in itself offers a variety of attractions, the most common reason for heading there is to hike in the nearby mountains. I will list just a few of the magical destinations in the Polish Tatra mountains, bear in mind though there are plenty more !

Come and explore them yourself, but please remember to prepare yourself for the hike – wear appropriate shoes and outerwear, take SPF and water with you!

zakopane_giewont_mountain

A very well-known mountain massif in the Tatra mountains with it’s highest point at 1895 metres AMSL. Look at it closely, can you see what it resembles?

It is said to be… a sleeping knight! If you couldn’t see it before, look at the photo once again ;)  There is a legend among the locals that these are actually enchanted knights who sleep deep in the Tatra Mountains and will wake up when the time is right. But when will the time come? We still don't know...

In 1901, a steel cross (15 metres high!) was erected on Great Giewont. It is one of the regional landmarks and a site of religious pilgrimages.

2. Gubałówka

A mountain (1129 metres AMSL at highest point) very popular among tourists. It is a great option for those who want to experience views from a mountain top but can’t or don’t want to hike on foot , as there is a funicular that can quickly take you all the way up.

3. Morskie Oko

I don’t want to be biased, but I think this might actually be my favourite. Just saying!

Morskie Oko (the literal translation of it's name would be the Eye of the Sea ) is a breathtaking lake (the largest one in Tatra mountains) in the midst of the mountains – it looks as if taken straight out of a fairytale . This one is also a very popular spot, and for very good reasons. Absolutely incredible views worth every second of the hike!

zakopane_morskie_oko

Isn't it just incredible?

Something for more experienced hikers – a beautiful mountain on the border of Poland and Slovakia, with it’s north-western summit being the highest point of Poland (2499 metres AMSL) . Prepatation may take a little more effort, but the satisfaction is very rewarding.

Honorable mentions

The Polish Tatra mountains are truly beautiful and I highly encourage you to dive into Google to see what piques your interest and pursue that. Will it be one of the places mentioned above? Or maybe one of our beautiful valleys – Dolina Chochołowska , Dolina Kościeliska or Dolina Pięciu Stawów ? Maybe you will want to reach the top of Kasprowy Wierch or Świnica ? It doesn’t really matter which one you choose, as long as you are excited for the journey!

Who lives in Zakopane? The wonderful people and the folklore of the region

The region of Polish Tatra mountains is called Podhale and the people who live there ( górale  eng. highlanders ) are well-known for being very vibrant, passionate and hard-working people with rich culture that they like to cultivate. Their culture, music, dance, and traditional attire are an integral part of Zakopane. You will surely spot some traditional outfits and hear their lively music (often played live in restaurants). There is even an entire art style called Zakopane Style , which is very prominent in the region – you will notice very characteristic buildings everywhere!

Regional cuisine of the area is known for some of the most recognizable dishes in Poland . As you will see in a second, most of them are savoury and very flavorful!

Here are some examples:

  • bryndza and bundz (made from sheep milk),
  • oscypek the king of all cheeses from the region (and may even be the king of all cheeses in all of Poland)  – smoked cheese made from sheep milk; has a characteristic shape – it’s tapered at both sides. Often served with cranberry sauce, oscypek provides a delightful blend of savory and sweet notes, offering a true taste of the region's heritage.
  • gołka (looks similar to oscypek, but it’s made from cow’s milk not from sheep's milk – you can tell the difference between them by their shape; their taste however is very different, so it’s a good idea to taste both)
  • kwaśnica – traditional saeuerkraut soup with meat, eaten usually with bread or potatoes – a must-try! This tangy soup is prepared by fermenting cabbage and cooking it with a variety of meats such as smoked sausage or bacon. The result is a hearty, flavorsome soup characterized by its rich, robust taste and comforting aroma.
  • czosnianka – soup made with potatoes, garlic, onion and mint
  • hałuski – a specific type of thick, soft potato dumplings
  • placek zbójnicki (or Highlander’s Potato Pancake in English) – well… a potato pancake :) made with potatoes, flour, onion, fatback, lard, eggs and spices. These hearty potato pancakes are typically served with goulash or beef stew, creating a filling and satisfying meal. The crispy texture of the pancakes complements the richness of the meat, offering a delightful contrast of flavors and textures.

Pierogi , traditional dumplings, are beloved in highland cuisine and come with various fillings, including meat, potatoes, cabbage, mushrooms, or cheese. These dumplings are typically boiled and then either pan-fried or served with crispy onions and sour cream. Pierogi are a versatile and comforting dish, appreciated for their delicious fillings wrapped in a soft dough casing.

If you’re wondering where you could try all those delicious delicacies, I recommend checking out the tripadvisor list of best restaurants in Zakopane – thousands of tourists can’t be wrong! ;)

What if a lit stove is not enough to heat.... %%

First things first, so... D zięgielówka (ahh those Polish names....)     – nalewka  its aa type of traditional Polish strong alcoholic beverages made with garden angelica. In the region of Zakopane and the Tatra Mountains, there are specific alcoholic beverages that are an integral part of the local culture. One of the most characteristic drinks is " Żubrówka ," also known as bison grass vodka , which is infused with natural aromas of bison grass, giving the drink a subtle, herbal flavor. Another noteworthy local alcoholic beverage is " Krupnik ," a traditional honey-based liqueur infused with spices such as cloves or cinnamon. It's a sweet drink with a rich history, valued as both a way to warm up on cold days and a symbolic element of holiday traditions.

Moreover, the region is renowned for excellent craft beers crafted with passion and utilizing local ingredients such as mountain herbs or honey. These local beers often embody the distinctive flavors of the region and are a popular choice among tourists seeking an authentic experience. Local alcoholic beverages not only complement the culinary journey through Zakopane but also form a part of the cultural heritage, offering an opportunity to taste traditional flavors and beverages deeply rooted in the local traditions.

The weather

Zakopane is a great destination regardless of the season, but it’s important to remember about taking according protective measures.

If you are planning on roaming the hiking trails in the middle of summer, it’s absolutely crucial to use high SPF and cover your head ! During the wintertime on the other hand you have to make sure that you are ready for the harsh freezing weather. As the city is in a close proximity to the mountains, the conditions can be slightly more extreme than in the rest of the country. The weather can change rapidly, so be prepared for everything.

Better safe than sorry!

This is a basic overview of a 3 day High Tatras hiking map. This multi-day trek through the Tatra Mountains begins from the adorable mountain hamlet of Zakopane, Poland and ends in the village of Strbske Pleso ( Štrbské Pleso), Slovakia .

The Tatra mountains are found in the impressive Tatra National Park. Within the park, find two very distinctive regions and mountain ranges, the High Tatras and the Low Tatras. In the high Tatras, find more jagged peaks, stunning lakes, and alpine terrain. The Lower Tatras boast lush forests at a lower altitude. Both sections of the mountain range are part of the incredible Carpathian Mountains.

There is no camping allow in the Tatras Mountains, so utilize the plentiful mountain huts, found in both Poland and Slovakia.

This 3 day multi-day trek and High Tatras hiking map is a challenging route with a starting point in Poland and hikes over the mighty Rysy Summit to Slovakia.

⁉️ If downloading the map, please verify that the map is correct and follows the waypoints. Oftentimes, there are daily updates to the site, map platforms, and other external issues that may cause a bug in downloading. Be mindful that this map is solely for entertainment purposes. See my full disclosure here . Always hike responsibly and respect the mountains by following a no-trace philosophy, avoid hiking alone, be conscious of the weather and personal limitations, and do not stray from the visible trail

Travel Like a Local – Tips for Getting Around Zakopane

Lukasz

I need to say that Zakopane is a popular tourist destination, so its streets tend to be packed, leading to significant traffic congestion. Therefore, it’s a wise choice to leave your car at your accommodation and opt for public transportation. Not only will you avoid traffic jams, as local drivers know their way around, but it’s also more cost-effective.

Parking fees at popular spots like the Morskie Oko trail can be quite steep. Since Zakopane is a small town, walking is often the most convenient way to explore. However, if you need a taxi, it’s better to call one.

Navigating Zakopane by Car

If you didn’t bring your own car, car rental options are available in Zakopane. However, if you plan to spend most of your time in the city center, you won’t need one. A car might be useful in the summer, but keep in mind that winter conditions can make many places harder to access. Roads may be blocked, and winter equipment like chains and defrosters are essential. Just like in any city, there are areas where cars are not permitted.

In the city center, pedestrian-only zones include Krupówki and Pilsudskiego Streets . The car traffic boundary near Tatra National Park is marked by Droga pod Reglami , beyond which you’ll need to continue on foot or by public transport. Zakopane has ample parking spaces, with the majority found on Al. 3-go Maja Street and Bronislaw Czech near sports stadiums and ski jumps.

↳ Make sure to check out my guide to ALL attractions in Zakopane , so you don't overlook anything interesting : 66 Best Attractions in Zakopane 2023 – What to Do – Interesting Places

Making the Most of Public Transportation

In the winter, you can travel by horse-drawn sleigh, while in the summer, horse-drawn carriages are available, adding a touch of charm to your visit. On a more practical note, buses and private minibuses can take you to remote locations, trailheads, and picturesque valleys. In some cases, they offer better access than private cars. Most transport services depart from the bus station, which is a short 10-minute walk from the city center.

To access the public bus timetable : Click Here

Purchasing Public Bus Tickets in Zakopane

You can buy tickets from vending machines on buses, directly from the driver (exact change required), or through the mPay mobile app. When using the app, your ticket is automatically validated. During inspections, simply go to the „Ticket Control” tab, select your active ticket, and show it to the inspector – no internet connection required. Alternatively, tickets can be purchased at these locations:

  • TESKO Tatrzańska Komunalna Grupa Kapitałowa Sp. z o.o. Customer Service Office, 17a Szymony St.
  • Tourist Information Center, ul. Kościuszki 17
  • Tourist Information Center, 7 Koscieliska Street
  • Kiosk on Cyrhla Street, next to No. 25

Ticket machines can be found at these Zakopane spots:

  • Station area st. no. 8
  • 3 Maja Avenue Upper
  • 3 Maja Avenue Lower
  • Watra (in the upward direction)
  • Jana Pawła II traffic circle (near TPN information point)

Ticket Pricing

Options for 60-minute, 24-hour, 3-day, and family tickets are also available.

Exploring Zakopane by Cable Car

zakopane tourist map pdf

The cable car to Kasprowy Wierch has been a top attraction for years. However, due to its popularity, you might have to wait in long queues for tickets. To avoid this, consider purchasing tickets in advance or taking in the views of the railway from the tourist trail.

The hike to Kasprowy is not too challenging, and you’ll get a close-up view of the route and the transfer point at Myslenice Turnie. The Gubalowka funicular doesn’t have long ticket lines, so it’s worth hopping on for a breathtaking panorama of the Tatra Mountains . For a healthy return trip, we recommend walking back, which only takes about half an hour.

Taking a Taxi in Zakopane

If you need to get around Zakopane quickly, local taxi services are your best bet. Local drivers know the fastest routes, how to avoid traffic jams, and how to navigate the city with ease. Plus, you won’t have to worry about parking, steep inclines, or closed roads. When opting for a taxi, it’s best to call a reputable taxi Zakopane service for a more affordable ride. Personally I do not use taxi, as it is the most expensive way of traveling.

If you are looking for taxi in Zakopane, You can call 24/7 Radio Taxi Zakopane, they speak in English, Russian, Greek, German and Polish. Their phone number is: 0048 666 300 111 .

Renting a Bike or Scooter in Zakopane

Renting a scooter is an exciting way to explore Zakopane and its surroundings. These nimble vehicles provide a comfortable way to get around and enjoy spontaneous downhill rides in the hilly town.

Scooters are fun for both kids and adults. Younger ones will see them as an enjoyable way to burn off energy, while older riders can appreciate scooters as a practical, active transportation option for short distances. For an even more comfortable and dynamic experience, consider renting an electric scooter instead of a conventional one.

  • For More information, please read this article: Explore Zakopane in Style: Rent an Electric Scooter

Getting to Nearby Cities from Zakopane

Buses traveling to destinations outside Zakopane depart from the plaza next to the train station . There are three main routes: Nowy Targ, Białka Tatrzańska , and Czarny Dunajec. Here’s a breakdown of the cities and towns you can reach along these routes:

All of these buses stop at Al. 3-ego Maja , which is in the center of Zakopane, next to Krupówki . Tickets can be purchased from the bus drivers.

Traveling from Zakopane to Morskie Oko

Buses to Morskie Oko arrive at the parking lot on Palenica Białczańska . From there, you need to walk or take a carriage to Morskie Oko, which is about 9 km away and takes 2-2.5 hours to reach.

Here you can find complete guide I wrote about getting from Zakopane to Morskie Oko (including hiking routes options).

  • Since Morskie Oko is a must see, I suggest you read more about this place: A Guide to Visiting Morskie Oko, The Emerald Lake Near Zakopane

If you want to be on time and without any hassle, you can alternatively book a private tour from Zakopane to Morskie Oko. It is more expensive, but you will receive a professional guide who will take care of you and teach you about local history and traditions.

Getting to Thermal Pools in Białka , Bukovina , Szaflary , and Chochołów

To reach the „ Terma Bania ” in Białka Tatrzańska or „ Termy Bukovina ” in Bukowina Tatrzanska , take a bus from Zakopane to Białka Tatrzańska . Buses for both destinations depart from the square at the Zakopane railway station.

For detailed schedules, visit the following links:

If you are not sure which thermal pools you should visit, please read this article I wrote, it describes pros and cons of all thermal pools near Zakopane .

  • Zakopane-Bialka Tatrzanska
  • Zakopane-Bukowina Tatrzanska

If you’re coming from other towns in the region, it’s best to travel to Zakopane first and then take a bus to your desired destination. However if you are in Kraków, you can book a private trip from Kraków to Thermal pools. They will pick you up from you location and take you straight to the thermal pools.

10 BEST hikes TO DO IN THE TATRAS

  • Zakopane THE BEST BLOG
  • top 10 hikes to do in the Tatra National Park

barbara

Ten recommended walks and trips that I present below are a completely subjective choice. These are my favourite routes, available to anyone who likes to walk and does it often enough to be able to walk with pleasure a distance of a few - several kilometres.

route 1 Nosal Kuznice

1 MT. NOSAL / Tatra National Park

  • more about hiking in the Tatras:
  • hiking in the Tatra Mountains
  • Tatra Mountains
  • mountain shelters in the Tatras
You can also go on this trip in winter if there is a lot of snow and the trails are not icy. From Kuźnice to the city centre you can go back by bus. Barbara

route 2 Bialego Valley and Kalatowki

2 Bialego Valley and Polana Kalatowki / Tatra National Park

If the chair lift to the ski jumping hill Wielka Krokiew (the largest ski jumping hill in Poland) is open, it is worth taking a ride to the top to see a nice view of Zakopane. A tasty meal can be enjoyed at the Mountain Hotel on Polana Kalatowki. Barbara

route 3 Olczyska Valley and Mt. Wielki Kopieniec

3 OLCZYSKA VALLEY and MT. WIELKI KOPIENIEC / Tatra National Park

From the centre of Zakopane to Jaszczurowka you can take a city bus or go on foot ( recommended walks - route 3 Following Stanislaw Witkiewicz ). In Jaszczurówka, it is worth seeing a beautiful, historic chapel designed by Stanislaw Witkiewicz. In the spring, on this route, you can admire the blooming crocuses Barbara

route 4 Kościeliska and Chocholowska Valleys

4 KOSCIELISKA AND CHOCHOLOWSKA VALLEYS / Tatra National Park

Public minibuses often go to/from Kiry and to/from Siwa Polana. In Dolina Koscieliska, you can get to Hala Pisana by horse sleigh or a horse-drawn carriage. In Kościeliska Valley there are three popular caves - the largest Mroźna Caves (with electric lighting), the smallest Smocza Jama (Dragon's Cave) and the most extreme Mylna Cave (absolutely necessary at least two flashlights to pass through this cave). The shelter at Hala Ornak offers tasty meals. Barbara

route 4 Kościeliska and Chocholowska Valleys

5 GESIA SZYJA PASS AND RUSINOWA POLANA / Tatra National Park

Toporowa Cyrhla (bus stop) - red-marked trail to Rowien Waksmundzka - green-marked trail to Gesia Szyja (viewpoimt) and further to Rusinowa Polana (viewpoint) - blue-marked trail to Polana Palenica (bus stop).

You can reach the Toporowa Cyrhla bus stop by bus or minibus going to Morskie Oko. The last stop of these buses is Polana Palenica. There is a charming wooden church/sanctuary of the Our Lady Queen of the Tatras near to the Rusinowa Polana which is worth visiting during the trip (here was my wedding :) It take 10 minutes to get there. You can read a nice story of the church here. Barbara

Next 5 recommended hikes will be added soon.
