Maker’s Mark Distillery Was Once The Burks’ Distillery

To visit Maker’s Mark Distillery at Star Hill Farm is to step back into the past. Maker’s story began in 1953, when Bill Samuels, Sr. purchased the dilapidated Burks’ Distillery located near the small Kentucky town of Loretto. The original 187 acre purchase sat along the banks of Hardin’s Creek. The distillery and the Samuels family both could claim a lengthy history in the business of whiskey making.

Burks’ Distillery History

In 1803, Charles Burks and his family had settled the land in order to set up and operate a water grist mill on the creek. Not long afterwards, around 1805, Charles began to distill. While the mill operated continuously throughout the Burks’ ownership of the property, the distillery went dormant with the death of Charles and his son around 1831-1832. It was resurrected, however, by a later generation of the family in the late 1880’s. The property, including the distillery, remained in the Burks family for over 100 plus years.

T.W. Samuels & Son’s Distillery

As for the Samuels, Bill, Sr. would become the 4th generation commercial distiller in his family. His great grandfather, T.W. Samuels, along with his son, W.I. Samuels, opened the T.W. Samuels & Son Distillery in 1844. Upon the death of both founders in 1898, Leslie B. Samuels, son of W.I., took the helm. The fates were not particularly kind to Leslie. In 1909, fire destroyed the distillery, along with 6 barrel warehouses and their nine thousand barrels of aging whiskey. The distillery was rebuilt but eventually cost Leslie controlling interest in the company. Prohibition brought another devastating blow in 1920; although the company was able to restructure in 1933 after the repeal of Prohibition, just 10 short years later in 1943, the company, its brands, and trademarks (including the Samuels family name), were sold.

Bill Sr. Steps In

Leslie B. passed in 1936 and his son, Bill, Sr., had taken over the family’s stake in the business. He had attempted to secure financing in order to purchase the T.W. Samuels & Son Distillery outright, but came away empty handed. Even though he had no distillery, Bill, Sr. decided to work on a new recipe. He had always thought their family recipe was too harsh. He wanted a smoother, sweeter bourbon. Help came two ways.

First, Bill, Sr. sought out assistance from friends. Friends who just happened to be heavy hitters in the bourbon industry: Pappy Van Winkle ( Stitzel-Weller ), Hap Motlow ( Jack Daniels ), Jere Beam ( Jim Beam ), and Ed Shapira ( Heaven Hill ), to name a few. Together they helped him to formulate his new recipe. Second, Bill, Sr.’s supportive wife, Margie, put the various mash bills to the test by baking each into a loaf of bread. After sampling the lot, Bill, Sr. settled on a mash bill that replaced the spicier rye grain with soft red winter wheat. He put his new mash bill into production in 1954, when distilling commenced once again at the Burks’ Distillery.

Maker’s Mark Distillery Is A Beautiful Historic Property

Taking a tour at Maker’s Mark Distillery is time well spent. It’s a beautiful bourbon oasis that has been welcoming visitors for over 40+ years. The most popular tour at Maker’s Mark is called, appropriately, The Maker’s Mark Tour. This tour teaches the visitor about Maker’s Mark Distillery’s history, as well as about their process of making bourbon. It concludes with a tasting. The cost of the tour (as of October 2023) is $24, and must be booked online, in advance. No tour tickets will be sold onsite. The tour takes approximately 1 1/4 hours and involves about a 1/2 mile of walking. Much time is spent outside, with visits to some of the production buildings, so keep the weather in mind.

Maker’s Mark Distillery Has Many More Tours & Experiences

Recently, Maker’s Mark has added many more tours and experiences. These also all require advance online booking and include:

  • Behind The Bourbon , which is a more in-depth tour than The Maker’s Mark Tour, and last 2 hours, and also includes a more diverse bourbon tasting
  • The Remarkable Experience , which is a 3 hour long small group tour which covers the distillery and grounds, including a welcome cocktail and progressive tasting along the tour route
  • The Oak Experience , which accommodates no more than 5 people, lasts 2.5 hours, and “deep-dives into oak education, whisky maturation and wood finishing” and also includes thieving whisky and sampling various wood finished bourbons
  • Maker’s Mark Art & Design Tour , a 90 minute guided tour of the art around the Maker’s Mark campus, beginning with a welcome cocktail and concluding with a pour of a Maker’s Mark Private Selection
  • The Star Hill Farm Tour , a 1 1/2 hour tour with no more than 4 people, covering Star Hill Farm, including garden, apiaries, mushroom quarry, wheat fields, livestock pastures, as well as education on Maker’s regenerative agriculture initiatives. The tour includes a Gold Rush cocktail on arrival and 3 samples of our Maker’s Mark® Private Select and Wood Finishing Series

Maker’s Mark Distillery Tour Visitor Center

Check-in for all tours begins inside the visitor center near the entrance to the distillery grounds. On the way in, or out, as the case may be, don’t miss a walk through the extensive raised bed garden. Even though autumn was in full swing, vegetables and flowers continued to abound. Maker’s requests that tour guests arrive 20 minutes before tour time. Any extra time also allows for a peek at the garden or the art and Maker’s memorabilia inside the visitor center building, or a stop at the cocktail bar.

On our initial visit, we met our guide, Christopher, inside the entrance. After a quick introduction, the tour commenced and we followed him out the back of the entrance area and down the gently sloping walkway towards the distilling campus.

Let’s Head To The Distillery

As we’ve already noted, there’s a lot of history to Maker’s Mark’s story. Christopher began our tour with some of this history as we headed to our first stop, the distillery. He pointed out that Margie insisted that for every dollar that went into making the bourbon, one dollar would go towards building and ground restoration. It definitely shows.

Maker's Mark Distillery Entrance

Fermenters & Stills

When we took our tour in 2021, visitors were not allowed inside the distillery. That has since changed, and visitors can once again get an up-close look at the stills, cookers and fermenters. In the main area of the distillery, there are 8 cypress fermenters, each with a 9600 gallon capacity. Out of view are another 52 9600 gallon stainless steel fermenters. Fermentation at Maker’s Mark lasts 3 days. Interestingly, Maker’s Mark Distillery has 3 identical sets of stills and doublers. The goal at Maker’s is to have uniformity of flavor, and therefore every time they have expanded their capacity, they simply built a duplicate version of what they already had. The 5 story high 16 plate copper column stills yield a low wine at 120 proof. The doublers then boost this up to 130 proof and the high wine is then proofed down to 110 proof for barreling.

Cooker

Maker’s Mark Has Some Unique Features

Christopher reviewed the distilling process, and there were a few interesting facts fairly unique to Maker’s Mark Distillery. First, Maker’s uses a 3 roller mill set which gently crushes the grains, instead of a hammermill which pulverizes them. Second, today Maker’s property now totals around 850 acres. The distillery deliberately purchased the surrounding land in order to control and protect their entire watershed. Lastly, Maker’s Mark propagates their own yeast. While some distilleries continue this practice, even more intriguing, is the fact that their yeast strain originates from their old family distillery, the T.W. Samuels & Son Distillery.

Moving on from the distillery we made our way over to the Label Room. Considered part of bottling, this small space houses two 1934 Chandler & Price dye cutters along with some very large copiers in the back. All labels are printed and cut on site. The dye cutters have been in use from the early days of bottling. Christopher explained how packaging was all Margie’s genius, from the unique bottle shape, to the hand-torn label (originally), to the world famous and trademarked red dripping wax seal. It was said that Margie is why you buy the first bottle, and Bill, Sr. is why you buy the second.

1934 Chandler & Price Dye Cutter

The Barrel Warehouse

From labeling, we headed to our next stop, Warehouse A. This 3 story rickhouse was built in 1885 and has approximately a 4,000 barrel capacity. Like all rickhouses, the aroma of aging bourbon filled the air inside with a nose pleasing sweetness. Christopher relayed that warehousing has changed a bit since the old days. New structures are 7 stories tall with a 60,000 barrel capacity. Maker’s currently has 45 warehouses in 3 surrounding counties (as of 2021).

Before we left the sugary bouquet behind, Christopher explained that unlike most distilleries, Maker’s Mark rotates their barrels in the rickhouse. Barrels are stored on the upper floors first for 3 years then moved to the lower floors for the remainder of their aging. For example, in the 7 story warehouses, barrels that start on the 7th floor move to the 1st floor, while those on the 6th move to the 2nd, and barrels on the 5th floor move to the 3rd. Fourth floor barrels remain in the same position for the entire 6-6 1/2 years that Maker’s ages their bourbon.

Maker's Mark Distillery Tour Review - Warehouse A

The Limestone Cellar

With a little warehouse education under our belt, our final stop on the walking portion of the tour was the limestone cellar. This cave like building is a recent addition (2016) to the distillery campus. The cellar was specifically built to house the Maker’s 46 and Marker’s Mark Private Select barrels while they are being wood-finished. Little did we know, the Maker’s Mark Cellar Aged Bourbon was aging quietly there during our visit, as well.

Maker’s 46 was the creation of Bill Samuels, Jr., son of founders Bill, Sr. and Margie Samuels. After 35 years in the family business, Bill, Jr. wanted to leave a legacy of his own before he retired (2011) as President and CEO. Released in 2010, Maker’s 46 was the first brand extension the company had ever done. For more than 50 years, Maker’s Mark made only a single product, Maker’s Mark Bourbon. Maker’s 46 has 10 seared virgin French oak staves inserted into a fully aged Maker’s Mark Bourbon barrel. The constant year round temperature in the cellar is 50-52 degrees providing ideal conditions for the nine week wood-finishing process to complete. The cellar’s 2,000 barrel capacity keeps the Maker’s 46 flowing.

Maker's Mark Distillery Limestone Cellar

Maker’s Mark Private Selection

Also included in this 14,000 square foot cave like expanse is a tasting room dedicated to the Maker’s Mark Private Selection program. The space is beautifully modern yet has an old world feel. The room is designed so customers, through hands on experimentation, can create their very own Maker’s Mark wood-finished expression. What a fun way to spend 3 hours of one’s life! More recently, a similar area for creating Maker’s Mark Private Selections, known as the Lake House, has been built in the hills overlooking the distillery. Regardless of where it is created, Private Selections all age in the Limestone Cellar.

On To The Tasting Rooms

Our final stroll with Christopher took us out of the cellar and over to the tour tasting rooms. Our Maker’s Mark Distillery Tour came with 5 bourbon samples. In order, we tasted the Maker’s Mark Bourbon, Maker’s 101, Maker’s Cask Strength, Maker’s 46, and a Maker’s Private Selection. Christopher did an excellent job leading us through each sample and highlighting its characteristics. The tasting wrapped up in just under 15 minutes and we followed Christopher through the short hallway that cleverly leads directly into the enormous and well stocked gift shop.

Maker's Mark Distillery Tour Tasting Room

The Chihuly Hallway

The hallway, however, requires special attention. To celebrate Maker’s Mark’s 60th anniversary, Rob Samuels, son of Bill, Jr. and the current Managing Director of the distillery, had an amazing Dale Chihuly glass display installed in the ceiling of the hallway between the tasting rooms and the gift shop. The Washington state born artist is world famous for his glass blown sculptures. It’s definitely a piece to stop and admire. We then said our goodbyes to Christopher inside the gift shop and thanked him for a fantastic Maker’s Mark Distillery tour!

Chihuly Glass

Maker’s Mark Gift Shop

The Maker’s Mark gift shop is always teaming with eager shoppers. While the store has all the usual clothing, glassware, and of course bourbon galore, it also offers visitors 21 or older the opportunity to hand dip their own bottle of Maker’s Mark Bourbon. Purchase an undipped bottle, don the protective gear, follow the distillery expert’s instructions and you can create your own red wax drip. If shopping isn’t in your wheelhouse, then exit the gift shop left and head down the sidewalk to Star Hill Provisions. This restaurant and cocktail bar occupies the renovated Distiller’s House from the days of the Burks’ Distillery. While the restaurant has unfortunately been closed for quite some time, the cocktail business is still in full swing. Indoor and outdoor seating, which provides views of the scenic Maker’s Mark campus, are both available.

The Maker’s Mark Name

There’s only really one tidbit left to cover. How did an old dilapidated Burks’ Distillery and a family whose brand name had been sold become known as Maker’s Mark? Once again, the genius of Margie Samuels was at play. Bill, Sr. had begun distilling before his new bourbon even had its own identity. While Margie was planning the new brand’s packaging, she was also settling on a name. As a collector of fine English pewter, Margie was well aware that a pewter whitesmith would leave his mark on his best work. After musing upon the maker’s mark in her pewter collection, the idea hit: Maker’s Mark. Along with the name also came the familiar circle with a star on the border and the S and the IV inside the circle. This was their maker’s mark and can still be found on all Maker’s Mark products today.

Maker’s Mark Has Something For Everyone

Whether you’re a bourbon nerd or history buff, Maker’s Mark Distillery has plenty for either interest. It has been a National Historic Landmark since 1980, and remains a beautiful place to visit today. Fortunately, Bill, Jr., heeded the stern advice of his father and did not “screw up the whisky.” Not only did he not screw it up, he played a pivotal role in forging Maker’s Mark into the world wide success it has become. Take the tour, enjoy the scenic historic grounds, have a cocktail, and leave with a little historic perspective, and some damn fine bourbon whisky, too!

Maker's Mark Distillery Tour, Kentucky-the rolling lawns

Taking the Maker’s Mark Distillery Tour

The tour begins with a jaunt across the property past the oldest liquor store in the country – the Quart House – and into the Still House. Locals rode their horse and buggies right up to the shop, filling their empty bottles with this magical liquor.

A little Maker’s Mark her-story – Bill Samuels may have created the recipe of the bourbon itself in the 1950’s, but it was the marketing brilliance of Bill’s wife, Marjorie Samuels, that put Maker’s Mark on the map. She thought of everything from the name, to the Maker’s Mark bottle design, to the iconic wax seal. More about her later!

Still House

Maker's Mark Distillery, Kentucky - Still House

One step inside the Still House and you’ll swear you are in a bakery, not a distillery. That oaty  aroma emerges from the still as it brews and distills Bill’s carefully planned recipe. The mash bill, as the recipe is called, is heavy on the corn (70%) with hints of malted barley and red winter wheat. None of the usual rye to give it bite. Bill preferred his silky smooth.

The Bottle everywhere!

Maker's Mark Distillery, Kentucky - Exterior

As you’re walking through the property on the way to the rickhouse, you can’t help but notice that all the buildings are designed in a similar style. Dark brown, wooden panels cover each structure, all with similar red shutters with a singular cut out design.

Taking a closer look at that design, you see it’s the Maker’s Mark bottle!  The iconic Maker’s Mark bottle design was Marjorie’s idea as well. Bored by the look of every other bourbon bottle in the market at the time, she patterned it on French brandy bottles instead.

The Rickhouse

Maker's Mark Distillery Tour, Kentucky - the Rack

One step into the rickhouse, the name of the structure that houses bourbon while waiting for it to mature, and you can get intoxicated just by inhaling the whiskey, perfumed air. On a romantic note, this airborne spirit is called the Angel’s Share. Now it’s clear why angels always appear to be smiling! While encased in its virgin American Oak barrels, Maker’s Mark Bourbon develops its color and, more importantly, its heavenly flavor.

Maker's Mark Distillery Tour - Label Room

Each and every label of Maker’s Mark is stamped and cut in this little outbuilding, using machines that are as old as the brand itself. You get to see it as it happens.

Maker's Mark Distillery Tour, Kentucky - the label

Marjorie also designed the label. The name of Maker’s Mark came from the English habit of marking silver with an identifying stamp of the maker, thus Maker’s Mark, the star is for the name of the property Star Hills, S is for Samuels and the IV is to recognize Bill as the fourth generation of distillers.

It’s hard to believe that, in this one room, the bottling process for Maker’s Mark bourbon happens – from empty bottle to packed up and ready to ship out! Every bottle is hand dipped with the Maker’s Mark signature red wax, making sure that no bottle is the same as the next.

Yes, that was Marjorie’s idea. A biochemist by trade, she formulated the wax so it would drip down the bottle and then harden immediately.  Her portrait sits right in front of the dipping area in recognition of her genius!

Maker’s 46

Maker's Mark Distillery, Kentucky - Maker's 46

We made a detour into the vault where Maker’s 46 is laying in wait. Bill Samuels, Jr., the son of the original Bill Samuels, created the first product from Maker’s Mark in over 50 years. Taking cask strength Maker’s Mark right from the barrel at 108 to 114 proof, he then opened the barrel and placed ten seared virgin French oak staves (or planks) into that barrel. After only nine weeks, a completely different flavor profile emerges and Maker’s 46 is born ready to be enjoyed.

Tasting Room

Maker's Mark Distillery Tour - Tasting

Finally time to taste everything! Samples of Maker’s Mark Bourbon and Maker’s 46 and a few other specialty Maker’s bourbons you can only find at the distillery are set up and waiting for you. In addition to the two you’ve heard so much about – there are glasses of Maker’s Cask Strength; White Spirit, literally the liquid that comes right out of the still; and also their Private Select bourbons.

Private Select bourbon differs from year to year. Fully aged Maker’s Mark is finished off with different wood staves to create unique flavors. Don’t miss buying a bottle and taking it home – once it’s gone, it’s gone.

Lush Lead  – You can hand dip any bottle you purchase. Just make sure you leave time.

Art lovers – don’t miss the artist Dale Chihuly’s fabulous glass pieces. The Amber and New Oak Chandelier, 2017 is in the entrance kiosk above the ticket desk. The Spirit of the Maker , installed in 2014, is on the ceiling of the passageway which links the tasting room to the shop.

Bourbon Buddies

Maker's Mark Distillery Tour, Kentucky - Making friends

Here are some Southern gentlemen I met while on the porch waiting for the Maker’s Mark Distillery tour to begin. They were Maker’s Mark ambassadors, assigned a specific barrel when they signed up, they will receive. Once it’s ready, they can purchase a bottle and receive a  one-of-a-kind Ambassador bottle with their name on the label!

Maker's Mark Barrels

Most connoisseurs of fine spirits have heard about and probably sampled Kentucky Bourbon. We are willing to bet you have heard of the Bourbon Trail and might even know the difference between whisky (spelled the Scottish way), bourbon whisky and Kentucky bourbon whisky. If we have already stumped you, don’t worry, keep reading as we highlight one of the best places to learn about all things Kentucky Bourbon Whisky from the experts at Maker’s Mark® Bourbon Distillery .

The Distillery

The distillery was purchased by the Samuels family in 1953; however, the bourbon whisky recipe has been in the family since before prohibition. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and designated a National Historic Landmark, and the grounds at the distillery are immaculate. It’s almost hard to believe this is an industrial operation considering all the attention to detail.

Distillery Tours

There are four different tours available, the hour-long general distillery tour and three other options featuring tours of at least two hours. Get ready to learn about Bill’s Mash, double-barrel aging, barrel rotation, and red wax. There are some tour restrictions depending on the tour— some tours require being over 21 years of age and able to walk a good distance and climb stairs. Don’t forget to book your tour online in advance, walk-up tours are based on availability.

General Distillery Tour – The standard one-hour tour is very comprehensive and will give you an excellent understanding of the process and time required to make a Kentucky bourbon whisky packaged with the trademarked red wax.

Maker’s Immersion – This two-and-a-half-hour tour dives deeper into the operations of the distillery, including a few areas not available to visitors on the general distillery tour. The tour concludes with a maturation-style tasting and your own set of Maker’s Mark® wax-dipped rocks glasses.

Behind the Bar – During this two-hour option you will have a guided tour of the facility to learn about the distilling process followed by a mixologist class to learn how to create your own scrumptious drinks with the finest Kentucky bourbon whisky. After the session, you will be able to impress family and friends with your drink menu at the next party.

Heritage Tour – Calling all history buffs, this tour will give you an in-depth two-hour lesson on bourbon, all things Maker’s Mark® and American history.

The Bourbon

– Maker’s Mark® – Maker’s Mark 46™ – Maker’s Mark Private Select® – Maker’s Mark® – Cask Strength Bourbon Whisky

Did you know? Look at the logos and you will notice SIV before the Maker’s Mark® name. The “S” is for Samuels, and the Roman numeral IV symbolizes Maggie’s husband’s status as a fourth-generation distiller. It was later discovered that he was actually a sixth-generation distiller.

Bonus: While visiting the distillery, enjoy lunch at Star Hill Provisions®, serving premium, farm-to-table fare. The restaurant is open for lunch every day, check the website for late lunch and dinner hours. Just like everything at this distillery, you will be impressed by Chef Newman Miller’s menu. The menu changes seasonally and features locally sourced and inspired ingredients. Don’t forget to stop in the Maker’s Mark® Shop to peruse the merchandise and take something home to remember your visit.

Museums & Historic Sites

  • When visiting a major city, don’t shy away from a museum even if you’re not a museum buff. The collections at major museums have so much more than paintings that you will still enjoy your visit.
  • Balance is ideal when traveling. Make sure to consider some of the smaller museums in the area.
  • Check the museum website before you visit. Take the museum highlight tour or a behind-the-scenes tour. These usually only last an hour and often become a favorite part of our clients’ visits.

TOUR & TICKETS

“The night began with Irish singer/songwriter Mark Daly & The Ravens. From the moment Daly hit the stage he owned it. Confidently addressing the crowd between songs and bringing a hard rock sound with a little punk feel added. If Daly is on the bill when the tour hits your town, be sure to get there in time to check him out, it won’t be long before he is headlining his own shows.” – Jeff Gaudiosi, Misplaced Straws

Pro sets unwanted Tour mark. But thought about the ‘drive home’ also stands out

Cameron Young on Sunday on the 17th green at Innisbrook Resort.

Getty Images

Cameron Young believes he failed. No, he revealed, he hadn’t been patient in his hunt for PGA Tour win No. 1. He’d let it get to him.

But he was improving.

“I feel like right now I’m in a really nice place mentally,” he said. “I’ve had really good control over my thoughts and emotions this week. They have definitely got the better of me at times, but I feel like I’m in a really nice place and I’m just trying to hit each shot the best I can.”

That reflection came Saturday at the Valspar Championship , where Young was tied for fifth through three rounds, three strokes out of the lead.

But that was Saturday, where things may not be as taxing.

They play Sunday, too, and that’s the day you make your money.

The Young story, to this point, can be considered a couple of ways. Through two-plus seasons and 60 tournaments on the PGA Tour, he’s been mostly all that you’d want out of a burgeoning star. Fourteen-million bucks in earnings. A Presidents Cup appearance. Forty-seven of 60 cuts made.

But revisit this story’s first paragraph. Young’s winless. He’s still still searching, agonizingly so.

Consider:

— He tied for second at the 2021 Sanderson Farms Championship , where he shot no higher than 68, but finished a shot back of winner Sam Burns.

— He tied for second at the 2022 Genesis Invitational , where he shot a second-round 62, but finished two back of winner Joaquin Niemann.

— He tied for second at the 2022 Wells Fargo Championship , where he shot a final-round 66, but finished two back of winner Max Homa.

— He finished runner-up at the 2022 Open Championship thanks to a final-round 65, but finished one back of winner Cameron Smith.

Chandler Phillips hits a shot during the final round of the valspar.

‘I wasn’t right’: Shaken PGA Tour rookie gets candid after scary incident

— He tied for second at the 2022 Rocket Mortgage Classic , where Tony Finau won by five.

— He was runner-up at last year’s WGC-Match Play , losing in the final to Burns.

Added together, that’s six runners-up ahead of the Valspar, which was notable. Going back to 1983, according to the PGA Tour , only two other players ( Colin Montgomerie and Briny Baird) had finished second as many times without winning.

After Sunday, Young stood alone.

He tried. He rallied. With one hole to go at Innisbrook , he was tied for the lead. But Peter Malnati, in the group behind him, birdied the 17th. And Young bogeyed the 18th, following a pulled tee shot and a three putt. And that was that. Malnati was your winner . Young was second again.

And you maybe wondered whether all the thoughts-and-emotions talk from Saturday was just fluff.

Afterward, a reporter asked Young what he was proud of. Two late strokes, he said. The par-3 15th and the par-3 17th test players, but Young safely dropped both tee shots within 20 feet and parred both. “I think I handled my own thoughts really well, and, for me, that’s a big win regardless of the outcome,” he said.

So far, so good.

He was then asked about the emotions. He’d also mentioned them Saturday.

Below is Young’s answer.

And if you’re questioning whether he can conquer an item that he believes is blocking him, Young at least sounded like he can. After all, he was more focused on a few other folks.

Here is his complete exchange with a reporter:

“You had talked all week about how well you handled your emotions. What are the emotions like right now?”

“Um, I don’t know,” he said. “Honestly, I realized I wasn’t going to win pretty quickly, and I have a four-hour drive home with a 1- and a 2-year-old, so whatever emotions are attached to that.”

There are only 15 days remaining before the opening round of the 88th Masters at Augusta National Golf Club, the first major championship of the men's professional golf season.

While defending champion Jon Rahm is playing in the LIV Golf League, world No. 1 golfer Scottie Scheffler has emerged as a heavy betting favorite after back-to-back victories on the PGA Tour. The 2022 Masters champion also knows his way around Augusta National pretty well.

With the PGA Tour headed to Texas for the last two stops before the Masters, starting with this week's Texas Children's Houston Open, it's a good time for the latest edition of the PGA Tour power rankings.

Of course, there's no surprise at No. 1. But during a season in which rookies and other lesser-known first-timers have won tournaments, you might have to look further down the list for superstars.

mark tour

1. Scottie Scheffler

The world No. 1 golfer is coming off back-to-back victories at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and the Players Championship. He has two top-10 finishes at Memorial Park Golf Course, including a tie for second in 2022. He could become the first player since Dustin Johnson in 2017 to win in three straight starts. Rory McIlroy was the last to do it in three consecutive starts in stroke-play events (DJ's streak included the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play).

mark tour

2. Wyndham Clark

The reigning U.S. Open champion was runner-up to Scheffler in each of his past two starts, finishing 5 strokes back at the API and 1 back at the Players Championship -- after his birdie putt on the 72nd hole cruelly lipped out. He was ranked No. 189 in the Official World Golf Ranking when he played in the 2022 Texas Children's Houston Open. Now, he's one of the best players in the world, ranking third on tour in shots gained: total (1.869), eighth in tee to green (1.214) and 12th in putting (.656).

mark tour

3. Xander Schauffele

Schauffele couldn't hold a final-round lead at the Players Championship, but there's no question he has played spectacular golf lately. He has already piled up six top-10 finishes in eight starts this season, including top-5s in three of his past four. One of the top golfers in the world without a major championship victory, the former Olympic gold-medal winner will be riding a lot of momentum heading into the Masters, where he'll try to finally bag a big one.

mark tour

4. Hideki Matsuyama

The 2021 Masters champion picked up his ninth PGA Tour victory at the Genesis Invitational in February. He followed that with a tie for 12th at the API and a tie for sixth at the Players Championship. Despite battling a back injury again, Matsuyama has been great from tee to green and around the green, but he ranks 134th in strokes gained: putting (-.378).

mark tour

5. Ludvig Åberg

After picking up his first PGA Tour victory in his last start in 2023 at the RSM Classic, the former Texas Tech star hasn't slowed down. He has three top-10s in seven starts, including a runner-up finish at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. He hits it long and straight and doesn't make many mistakes. He'll make his first start in a major championship at the Masters.

mark tour

6. Will Zalatoris

Zalatoris missed the cut in his most recent start at the Players Championship, but his form has returned after he underwent back surgery in April that sidelined him for the rest of 2023. He had a pair of top-5s against loaded fields in signature events -- a tie for fourth at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and for second at the Genesis Invitational. His ballstriking is as good as ever; he ranks sixth in strokes gained: approach (.789).

mark tour

7. Rory McIlroy

McIlroy seemed poised for a fast start after he tied for second at the Dubai Invitational and won the Hero Dubai Desert Classic for a record fourth time on Jan. 21. That success hasn't carried over to the PGA Tour, however, as he has just one top-20 finish in five starts so far -- a tie for 19th at the Players Championship. He ranks second in strokes gained: off the tee (.938) but 119th in approach (-.176).

8. Brian Harman

Harman's missed cut at last week's Valspar Championship might have been the result of a hangover from his narrow miss at the Players Championship. He finished 1 stroke behind Scheffler and had a good look for a tying birdie on the 72nd hole. The reigning Open Championship winner tied for 12th at the API.

9. Nick Taylor

The Canadian picked up his fourth PGA Tour victory -- and his second straight in a playoff -- by outlasting Charley Hoffman in two extra holes at the WM Phoenix Open on Feb. 11. Taylor ranks 127th in strokes gained: off the tee (-.158) but makes up for it with stellar iron play (15th in approach) and putting (20th).

10. Matthieu Pavon

On Jan. 27, the 31-year-old became the first golfer from France since 1907 to win on the PGA Tour when he defeated Nicolai Hojgaard by 1 stroke at the Farmers Insurance Open. He also tied for seventh at the Sony Open in Hawaii and was solo third at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.

mark tour

11. Sahith Theegala

Theegala seems close to winning something big. He has four top-10s in eight starts this season, including in each of his past two -- a tie for sixth at the API and for ninth at the Players Championship. He's fourth on tour in shots gained: total (1.446) and seventh in putting (.821).

mark tour

12. Sam Burns

Burns is tied with Theegala for third-most top-10 finishes on tour this season with four. He tied for third in the WM Phoenix Open and for 10th at the Genesis. He ranks 24th in shots gained: total (.875) and 23rd in putting (.542).

mark tour

13. Cameron Young

Young narrowly missed out on picking up his elusive first PGA Tour victory again last week, finishing 2 strokes behind Peter Malnati at the Valspar Championship. It was Young's seventh runner-up finish in 60 tour starts, the most of any player without a victory dating back to 1970, according to ESPN Stats & Information. Young is too talented not to end the drought at some point.

mark tour

14. Patrick Cantlay

The eight-time PGA Tour winner's results have been hit or miss so far this season. He tied for 11th at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and for fourth at the Genesis. Cantlay had four other finishes outside the top 35. His inconsistent play off the tee and iron play are to blame -- he ranks 143rd in strokes gained: approach (-.359) and 135th in driving accuracy (55.2% fairways hit).

mark tour

15. Viktor Hovland

The reigning FedEx Cup champion, who looked ready to challenge Scheffler for world No. 1 at the end of last season, has limped through the first three months of 2024 with an average finish of 39.4 in five starts. He had just one top-20 -- a tie for 19th at the Genesis Invitational. Hovland has been frustrated with his swing and is working with a new coach, Grant Waite. His chipping woes have reemerged as well.

16. Jake Knapp

A nightclub bouncer just three years ago, Knapp became the third PGA Tour rookie to win this season when he captured the Mexico Open at Vidanta on Feb. 25. The former UCLA golfer has three top-5 finishes in 12 starts.

17. Chris Kirk

Kirk has cooled off a bit after capturing his sixth PGA Tour victory at the season-opening Sentry in Hawaii in January. It was his second win in 11 months after he came out on top at the Honda Classic in February 2023. He's 140th in strokes gained: putting (-.404) but has been more than solid off the tee and on approach.

mark tour

18. Justin Thomas

JT's struggles seemed to be in the rearview mirror after he had four top-12 finishes in his first five starts this season. He took a couple of steps back with missed cuts at the Genesis Invitational and Players Championship and a tie for 64th at the Valspar Championship. Still, his form seems headed in the right direction again.

mark tour

19. Shane Lowry

After a slow start to 2024, Lowry has rebounded with three consecutive top-20 finishes, including a tie for fourth at the Cognizant Classic and a solo third at the API. Lowry announced this week that he'll play with McIlroy in next month's Zurich Classic of New Orleans team event.

mark tour

20. Matt Fitzpatrick

After a so-so start to the 2024 season, Fitzpatrick seems close to putting everything together after a solo-fifth finish at the Players Championship. He had missed cuts at the Sony Open, Genesis Invitational and API before he bounced back at TPC Sawgrass. He is driving the ball better off the tee after removing a 4-gram weight from the grip of the club. Fitzpatrick told PGATour.com that he forgot the weight was even there.

mark tour

21. Max Homa

Homa came out of the gates well this season, tying for 14th at the Sentry and 13th at the Farmers Insurance Open. He also tied for eighth at the API. Homa has been wildly inconsistent off the tee, ranking 150th in driving accuracy (54.2%) and 115th in strokes gained: off the tee (-.117).

mark tour

22. Byeong Hun An

The South Korean golfer lost to Grayson Murray in a playoff at the Sony Open in Hawaii and has played consistently well since. He has three top-10s and five top-25s with only one missed cut in eight starts. After losing his PGA Tour card in 2021, he has climbed back to No. 42 in the Official World Golf Ranking.

mark tour

23. Jason Day

The former world No. 1 golfer played some of his best golf at the tour's biggest stops this season. He had three top-10s against elite fields at signature events, tying for 10th at the Sentry, for sixth at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and had a solo ninth at the Genesis. He has finished 16th or better in two of his three starts at Memorial Park, where his elite short game is a weapon.

mark tour

24. Tom Hoge

Hoge has been a model of consistency this season, making the cut in nine of 10 starts with a pair of top-10 finishes. He performed well on the West Coast swing with a tie for sixth at Pebble Beach and solo eighth at the Genesis. His iron play continues to be among the best on tour -- he ranks second in shots gained: approach (1.234) and proximity (34 feet, 7 inches).

mark tour

25. Peter Malnati

Bucket hats off to the PGA Tour policy board director, who picked up his second career PGA Tour victory -- and his first in 3,058 days -- at the Valspar Championship. He earned a two-year exemption, his first invitation to the Masters and a spot in the remaining four signature events of the season. He jumped from 184th to 65th in the world after the win.

Just missed the top 25: Harris English , Tommy Fleetwood , Austin Eckroat , Jordan Spieth , Collin Morikawa , Christiaan Bezuidenhout , J.T. Poston , Erik van Rooyen , Eric Cole , Grayson Murray, Min Woo Lee

Tour Itinerary

With the 1000-year history, Russia has had a rich portfolio of conflicts, battles, wars. On this Soviet tour, we'll talk about various wars that happened in Russia, focusing on WWII.

Mother Russia has undergone a lot in its long life. Since ancient times, Russian rulers have taken nearly all political power into their own hands. By the beginning of the 20th century, the Russian oppositional movement was deadly set for the total destruction of the ever-lasting tsarist regime. All of Russia got involved in the bloody revolution of 1917 in an effort to abolish the current state of the government and gain freedom for the ordinary people.

You will learn about the every-day life of the Soviet people during the bloody Second World War with the Nazis, including the legendary Battle for Moscow, the 900-day siege of Leningrad, the hardships that local citizens went through, the consequences of the war and the scars it left on the Soviet people, as well as why the Cold War happened and what was the fundamental reason.

Our mission on the Soviet Russia tour is to find out

  • - How much this 1917 revolution cost the people;
  • - Whether they actually got the freedom they wanted and was it worth it;
  • - What happened over the next 74 years;
  • - Who were the main political communist leaders of the Soviet Union;
  • - Were Russians happy and satisfied with the Soviet Union?

Our tour itinerary will lie in most Soviet areas of Moscow, which are quite spread throughout the city, as very few of them are left. You can choose how much you are ready to live this Soviet life on a 5, 7 or 10-hour tour. Depending on the duration of the tour, you will see part or all of the places below:

If you want to extend the tour, you are welcome to do so by paying $20/extra hour in cash on the tour.

Time stands still in Red Square. The Red Square is the heart of Moscow (and whole Russia). Saint Basil's Cathedral will make your mouth drop. If it is from May-October, have a cocktail on the outside terrace and simply people watch! The massive square offers so much to enjoy.

Lenin's Mausoleum

The burial place of one of the most influential communist leaders in the world.

Revolution Square Metro Station

Rub the Soviet dog's nose for good luck and admire the 76 bronze sculptures, devoted to the passionate, strong-willed and patriotic Soviet people.

Poklonnaya Hill

The highest point in Moscow, where Napoleon waited for keys of the city.

All-Russian Exhibition Center (VVC)

With its giant arch, amazing fountain, and huge pavilions of different Soviet Republics.

Victory Park Metro Station

The deepest undeground station in Moscow and one of the deepest in the world.

Victory Park

For an open-air museum as big as 135 ha (1 350 000 square meters), Victory park sure doens't lack diversity. The park is dedicated to the Russian victory in WWII, and was laid out in 1995 in commemoration of 50-year anniversary of victory.

Stalin had planned for its construction already in 1941, being sure of victory from the very start of the war.

Greeting Hill

The highest points in Moscow (172 meters), where Napoleon waited for keys of Moscow in vain.

Triumphal Arch

Stunning monument consisting of 12 cast-iron columns, each 12 meters high, and weighing 16 tons. Built to mark Russia's victory over Napoleon in 1812.

Museum of the Great Patriotic War

In the city that is as much about wars as it is about victories, there is one essential stopover - the Museum of the Great Patriotic War (that's what WWII is called in Russia). Must-do for those wishing to understand Russia's past and look at the whole war from the different perspective - Russian.

The museum is not for the faint-hearted. Here you can see films about the partisan experience, the scenes that will haunt you forever (no subtitles, but they are not necessary).

Museum of Contemporary History (from outside only)

We'll have a glance at Russian life of the XX century in the  Museum of Contemporary History , which houses bits of everything from Russian history of XXth century: from English club to a storage of Stalin's presents.

Memorial to the Holocaust,

devastating and breath-taking!

Unleash your inner spy. Highly recommended  Bunker-42 ,  Cold War Museum , explore the place where Khrushchev lived during the Cuban Crisis. Go down 18 floors to a gigantic bunker under Moscow that was designed to withstand a nuclear attack. Watch a short film about the severity of the Cold War. If you lived through the Cold War, you will hardly believe it is possible that you are in Bunker 42!

Wander through  Sparrow Hills  and climb up to the highest observation deck of Moscow with stunning views of all seven Stalin’s skyscrapers, including  Moscow State University . After that, experience the excitement of taking a  river cruise  on the Moscow river and catch the views of the Kremlin and Soviet times.

With unique ball marker, Kevin Streelman contending at Valspar

Change Text Size

PALM HARBOR, Fla. – Kevin Streelman was a birdie machine at Innisbrook Resort's Copperhead Course on Thursday. He made seven in all, and no bogeys, jumping out to the Round 1 lead at the Valspar Championship with a 64. Friday, he needed to stay a little more patient.

In much tougher conditions – morning winds gusted to 30 mph – Streelman did not find his first birdie until the final hole of his second round, converting a 6-footer, top edge, at the par-4 18th. He was fine with his score. He had battled hard, shot 1-over 72, and was very much in the thick of things at 6-under 136 as the tournament heads to the weekend.

Streelman’s putting did not stay as red-hot as one day earlier when he made 91 feet of putts, but Streelman continued to enjoy the use of a new ball maker he picked up recently, one with a directional alignment on top that has helped him to better focus on the greens, and get his putts started at a proper line.

Kevin Streelman's ball marker has a directional alignment on top that has helped him to better focus on the greens, and get his putts started at a proper line.

He got it from a caddie, and was unsure of the ballmarker’s origin, though he thinks it may be traced to a member at his home club, Arizona’s Whisper Rock. More than a few players have asked him about it.

“I think they think it’s cool,” Streelman said. “It’s not rocket science, but it makes sense. You try and get the lines down close to where you want to roll it, and then you use the line to try and match ‘em up.”

Kevin Streelman details unique ball marker

He did his homework before it went into play this week at Copperhead, doublechecking with PGA TOUR rules officials to make sure that his new marker was legal. He had to make one slight physical adjustment, filing the “post” end to 1 inch, the maximum it can be – previously, it was about a half-inch too long, so he had his reps at Wilson Golf grind it down.

Once Streelman places the marker behind his ball, he does not fully push it into the ground. That allows him to see where he wants to start his putt, and then rotate the top to better reflect the line he wants to start on.

“Because this thing has a fixed point – the post going into the green is a fixed point – he is allowed to rotate it,” said Steve Rintoul, chief referee for PGA TOUR.

Rintoul did offer Streelman one key observation, and a word of advice to players everywhere. The “trap” of these ball markers that serve as alignment aids is this: when a player is trying to align a line on the ball with a line on the marker, sometimes he inadvertently fails to return the ball in its exact actual spot. So an equipment standards question for the United States Golf Association morphed into a Rules of Golf discussion.

Streelman already was aware of this, and was already on the lookout to not commit such a violation (which would be a two-stroke penalty).

“He’s using it the right way," Rintoul said. "It (the marker) has been approved and vetted ... Kevin understood that. He’s a Duke guy, right?”

Cameron Young Sets Unfortunate PGA Tour Mark at the Valspar

G iven how often Cameron Young seems to be near the top of a leaderboard, it’s often easy to forget that the New York native has only played golf professionally for less than five years. He’s also only been a full-time PGA Tour member since the start of the 2021-22 season, earning Rookie of the Year honors.

But despite consistently putting himself in contention, the two-time Korn Ferry Tour winner has yet to hoist a trophy on the PGA Tour. During the final round of the 2024 edition of the Valspar Championship on March 24, Young again had a chance to claim victory but ultimately settled for second, finishing two strokes behind Peter Malnati.

Young now has an astonishing seven second-place finishes on the PGA Tour in just 60 starts, which is quite impressive. However, he also now owns the most runner-up finishes without a victory in the last 40 years.

Cameron Young Surged Into Contention at the Valspar But Again Settled For Second

Following a third-round 68 on the Copperhead Course at Innisbrook, Young entered the final round of the Valspar three strokes out of the lead.

He got off to a great start on Sunday, making a birdie at the first, but gave the stroke right back with a bogey at the second. Following his second birdie of the day at the par-3 fourth, the Wake Forest alum kept himself in it with six consecutive pars before quickly climbing up the leaderboard with birdies at Nos. 11, 12, and 14.

With pars at 15 and 16, Young came to the 198-yard, par-3 17th tied for the lead with Malnati and gave himself another good look at birdie by hitting his tee shot roughly 17 feet, 6 inches from the hole. But his putt just slid by, and he tapped in for par. Malnati, playing in the group behind him, birdied the 17th to take a one-shot advantage.

On the 438-yard, par-4 closing hole, Young yanked his tee shot left, leaving himself a tough angle but hit a fine second just to get on the green. But left with just over 51 feet to the hole, he three-putted for bogey. While Malnati only needed a par at the last, he made his fifth birdie of the day to take a two-stroke victory, thus earning his first PGA Tour win since 2015.

Young, meanwhile, was left to wonder what might have been yet again, although he kept things in perspective.

“I think I kept myself in it mentally really well today,” Young said afterward. “I hit a couple shots I was really proud of late … I think I handled my own thoughts really well and, for me, that’s a big win regardless of the outcome.”

Young Needs to Hope For a David Duval-Like Breakthrough

While there are several past players to which Young could be compared, the first that comes to mind is David Duval.

Like Young, Duval posted a pair of wins on what was then called the Nike Tour before becoming a full-time PGA Tour member. And also like Young, Duval found success quickly but just couldn’t close.

In 1995, his first full season at the highest level, he earned three runner-up finishes. The following year, he earned two more. And in 1997, he recorded another three.

At long last, on October 12, 1997, Duval broke through and won the Michelob Championship at Kingsmill in a playoff. A week later, he won the Walt Disney/Oldsmobile Classic, again in a playoff. In his next start two weeks later, he won the Tour Championship. And he was off and running from there.

Over the next four years, Duval won nine more times, including the 2001 Open Championship, and spent a total of 15 weeks as the top-ranked player in the world.

Only time will tell if Cameron Young can break through in a similar fashion. But given his talent level and the fact that he’s finished in the top 10 in 15 of his 60 starts, one has to think that elusive victory isn’t far off.

The Crimson Tide (22-11) led by as many as 31 points and put on a shooting display that resulted in a new school record for points scored in an NCAA Tournament contest. Mark Sears led the charge with 30 points and five assists, with just one turnover, as he became just the fifth player in school history to score at least 30 points in an NCAA Tournament contest. Latrell Wrightsell Jr. added 17 points on 5-of-6 shooting from deep while Aaron Estrada added 13 points and team highs of eight assists and seven rebounds in the win.

College of Charleston (27-8) was led by Ben Burnham's 19 points to top six players in double digits.

HEAD COACH NATE OATS COMMENTS

"I thought our rebounding and defense picked up in the first half after we got down six, when Mo Dioubate and Mo Wague came in and really got the energy turned the right way. We really had problems rebounding the whole game. They did a great job on the glass. Give them a lot of credit. I thought they played hard. I think Pat (Kelsey) does a really good job. They had a good plan.

"I think our athleticism in some areas overwhelmed them and they couldn't stay in front of us on the defensive end. But they did a great job on the glass. I thought once we started to get some stops and rebounds, we were able to open it up a little bit. They say you win games in March with guard play. I think that's true. These guys here ( Aaron Estrada , Mark Sears and Latrell Wrightsell Jr. ) combined for 60 points."

Sabrina Carpenter is bidding goodbye to the Eras Tour .

On Saturday, the "Nonsense" singer, 24, shared an Instagram post featuring some of the final photos of her run as a opening act on Taylor Swift 's record-breaking world tour. One photo showed Carpenter and Swift , 34, visiting the Sydney Zoo together in Australia. They could be seen strolling alongside each other as they took in the sights.

Other shots captured Carpenter performing onstage and cheering on her team as they prepared backstage.

"That’s a wrap for us on the eras tour :’)," Carpenter began her lengthy caption. "Sitting at home reflecting on what a whirlwind this was and how very honored I feel to have been part of it. I want to thank every crowd for being so welcoming and generous to us and making some of the most impressive friendship bracelets I’ve ever received."

"Also a huge thank you to the incredible crew for being so hardworking and talented," she continued. "And the most thank you’s I’ve ever thank you’d to Taylor."

She concluded her post with a heartfelt message for Swift herself.

"I feel so lucky to witness the magic that is you and this tour," she wrote to the 14-time Grammy winner. "There is truly no one like you and there never will be! I love you with all my heart and I will cherish this taybrina era (and all the eras) till the end of time 💞💞💞."

Swift first revealed that the Disney Channel alum would be joining her as an opening act for the Eras Tour in June 2023. Carpenter was announced as an opener for her  international dates  in Mexico, Argentina and Brazil, and Australia and Singapore were added in a later announcement.

Since then, the two singers have seemingly become even closer since touring together . Earlier this month, after Carpenter had her opening act canceled as bad  weather delayed one of their Sydney shows , Swift and Carpenter sang a duet of Swift's songs "White Horse" and "Coney Island" for excited fans at Accor Stadium, as they leaned against each other and swayed to the music.

Sharing a clip of the performance on Instagram, Carpenter later thanked Swift for her support and addressed the pinch-me moment of performing the duet with the megastar. “9 year old Sabrina singing white horse would never see this s--- coming! I love you so so so dearly Taylor. Always have, always will," she wrote.

In the same March 1 Instagram post, Carpenter nodded to her longtime love of Swift's music as she shared an old Facebook screenshot from her page in 2009 that read, “Was trying to enter a Taylor Swift contest to win tickets and a chance to meet her but they said I had to be 13.”
