What is the best time to visit budapest.

Spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October) offer pleasant weather, while the summer can be hot and crowded. December offers festive Christmas markets.

Is Budapest safe?

This is one of the questions about Budapest that is asked very often. Yes, Budapest is a very safe city, especially in districts 5, 6, and 7, where tourists mostly congregate. Crime rates are generally very low, but you should be cautious and apply common sense, like you should everywhere.

How long should I stay in Budapest?

Budapest has a lot to offer. It’s a gorgeous city with many things going on, culturally very rich. To get a feel of the place you need three days, to fully appreciate it stay at least for a week.

Are credit cards widely accepted in Budapest?

Yes, credit cards are accepted almost everywhere. However, it’s good to have a little bit of cash for small local vendors and markets. Cash is also good if you want to bargain about the price. Hungary is part of the EU but doesn’t use the euro yet. Most shops will accept payment in euros but have bad exchange rates, so you should always pay in forints (Hungarian currency). You could buy forints before you arrive in Hungary, but you risk getting old, expired banknotes. To avoid the hassle of going to the bank to exchange those, it’s better to do it when you arrive (but, like everywhere else, don’t change cash at the airport or the train station because the exchange rates are bad).

Which sights should I visit indoors in Budapest?

There are two main sights to consider if you want to go inside: the Parliament and the Great Synagogue. The Parliament is the most important building in Hungary and is as beautiful inside as it is outside. The Great Synagogue is unique and very beautiful as well. Both sights offer tours,  well-organized and informative. Tickets for the Parliament tour should be purchased well in advance because they’re very busy and often sold out.

Parizsi Udvar and New York Cafe are great places to grab a coffee and enjoy incredible interiors. If you want to visit New York Cafe, be ready to wait in line; it’s an insanely popular place. If you love opera, the Budapest Opera House is a must. You could take a tour, but go and check out a performance if you can get a ticket.

How do I get around Budapest?

Budapest has a very efficient public transportation system consisting of buses, trams, metro, and even ferries (not in the winter). The best places to buy physical tickets are metro stations. You can get single tickets (you need a different ticket for every ride, even in the metro-be sure to validate a ticket before you enter any means of transportation!) or passes of different lengths, which you can use for unlimited rides during a certain time period. There is also the app Budapest Go that you can download and purchase tickets.

On the other hand, Budapest is a very walkable city. Bike sharing with MOL Bubi is a convenient option, as well as scooters.

What traditional Hungarian dishes should I try?

Be sure to try goulash (a hearty soup/stew), lángos (deep-fried dough topped with different things), and chimney cake (a sweet pastry). Don’t forget to sample Hungarian wines and pálinka (fruit brandy).

Is tipping customary in Budapest?

Almost all restaurants in Budapest have a service charge between 12 and 15 percent. Keep that in mind when you are looking at prices and check the exact amount. If you want to tip after that, you can.

Other places, like bars or cafes, include a service charge less often. It’s always good to check that. If there is no service charge, tipping between 10 and 15 percent is customary for a good service.

What are the opening hours for shops and attractions in Budapest?

Most shops in Budapest are open from around 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM, with some larger stores staying open later. Attractions like museums typically operate from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM, with some closing on Mondays.

Discover the pearl of the Danube River  on our Free Walking Tour of Budapest. You'll explore the charms of the Hungarian capital including Chain Bridge, St. Stephen's Basilica, the Parliament and much more.

At the scheduled time, we'll meet you in Mádache Imre Square and set off on our free walking tour of Budapest.

To begin, we'll walk along the Danube River  and admire a breathtaking panoramic view as we turn towards Buda Hill . We'll also share some fun facts about the history of the Hungarian people and their beautiful, but difficult, language.

Soon, we'll come to Chain Bridge , which was the first construction of its kind in the Hungarian capital.

As we stroll around the city, we'll see some interesting statues and discuss Hungarian cuisine and its delicious dishes.

We'll then arrive at Freedom Square , where we'll spot some sites that hold great significance in 20th-century Hungarian history . These range from monuments dedicated to the Holocaust and the Red Army. We'll also talk about present-day Hungary's economics and politics.

Our tour will then take us to the Parliament building , which is one of the symbols of the city. This majestic construction on the banks of the Danube River has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is considered to be one of the most beautiful buildings in Europe.

It'll then be time to finish the tour at the Hungarian National Museum. Before saying your goodbyes, you can ask your guide for some tips on what to see during your visit to the city.

Children and teenagers are welcome on our free tour of Budapest! Each adult can join the tour with two minors.

Points of Critique

While Joe is an engaging orator, I found the latter half of the tour to lose a bit of its initial spark. After hearing 5-6 out of the total ten tales, the storytelling began to feel a bit repetitive .

Coupled with the late evening timing, the group's energy waned toward the end. Still, Joe’s dynamism keeps the atmosphere electric for most of the tour.

The tour focuses on a fascinating 3km stretch of caves and takes you on a journey through time, exploring the geological and human history of these mysterious underground tunnels.

What sets this tour apart is its dedication to historical accuracy .

You'll learn about how these caves formed over millions of years — you'll even get to see where a mammoth left one of its teeth!

Beyond the geology, the tour dives into the 800-year history of human usage of the caves, from medieval storage and tax evasion to their roles as prisons, war refuges, criminal hideouts, and even locations for clandestine parties in the 90s.

The temperature inside the cave averages 10-12°C , so it's advisable to wear warm clothing and comfortable footwear you don't mind getting dirty.

However, for those visiting in summer attire, free ponchos are provided to keep you warm.

The meeting spot is at Trinity Square , right by the Trinity statue. A quick 5-minute walk will take you to the cave's entrance.

Unfortunately, the cave is not accessible to individuals with mobility impairments.

As a Hungarian who supposedly knows this country, I still learned a lot of intriguing historical facts.

For history aficionados seeking more than just surface-level information, this tour is a goldmine.

The guide provides rigorous academic-level commentary , requiring a high level of English proficiency (unless you take the Spanish tour of course).

Notable landmarks include synagogues and poignant memorials dedicated to heroes who resisted Nazi and Arrow Cross Party oppression.

The tour kicks off at Imre Madách Square and concludes at Dohány Street Synagogue. The entire tour is outdoors and wheelchair-accessible, and it takes place in the Jewish Quarter (VII. District).

The tour was structured well to accommodate a medium-sized group (20-30 people), ensuring everyone could hear the guide clearly and see the landmarks.

Though the tour was generally excellent, the guide could have introduced himself more formally (as he just went straight into the material) and allowed pauses for absorption between his in-depth explanations (as his speech felt like speed-reading at times).

The meeting location is at Kossuth Square by the Hungarian Parliament. More precisely, it’s near the M2 metro and/or tram station . The tour is wheelchair-friendly and welcomes those with mobility challenges. The tour concludes at Vigadó Square.

We were among about 30 participants . Despite being a larger group, it didn’t take away from the enjoyment or educational value of the tour. I even struck up some pleasant conversations with fellow tour mates.

The tour gave me a bird's eye view of Budapest . It kicked off with a brief but informative stop at Heroes' Square and proceeded to drive past local landmarks like the Opera House, Városliget and Keleti Railway Station.

What sets this tour apart is its unique approach to ascending the Castle Hill — coming up from the side opposite the Danube, a welcome change from typical tours.

The journey begins at Clark Ádám Square , located at the base of Buda Hill. From here, you'll embark on a 5-10 minute ascent up the hill's stairs. A word of caution: the tour is not suitable for mobility-impaired individuals.

The tour was structured well to accommodate a medium-sized group, ensuring everyone could hear the guide clearly and see the landmarks.

While the tour was extensive, it left me wanting more , especially when it came to exploring the Pest side.

The quick stop at Heroess' Square and drive-by sightings don't do justice to the richness of the landmarks.

However, the air-conditioned bus was a welcome respite from the sweltering heat. The Castle District tour was spectacular though.
