WHAT IS MAMMA MIA THE MUSICAL ABOUT?

From West End to global phenomenon, MAMMA MIA! is Judy Craymer’s ingenious vision of staging the story-telling magic of ABBA’s timeless songs with a sunny, funny tale of a mother, a daughter and three possible dads unfolding on a Greek island idyll.

To date, it has been seen by over 65 million people in 50 productions in 16 different languages. In 2011 it became the first Western musical ever to be staged in Mandarin in the People’s Republic of China. MAMMA MIA the musical became the 8th longest running show in Broadway history where it played a record-breaking run for 14 years.

The movie version is said to have been the highest-grossing live-action musical film of all time upon its release in 2008. A second film, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, opened in July last year and is reportedly the most successful live musical movie sequel of all time.

With music and lyrics by Benny Andersson & Björn Ulvaeus,  Mamma Mia!  is written by Catherine Johnson, directed by Phyllida Lloyd and choreographed by Anthony Van Laast.

The hit ABBA musical that still has West End audiences taking a chance on it more than two decades after it first premiered,  Mamma Mia!  continues to deliver the feel-good factor to London in spades.

Still drawing in the crowds 24 years after its London premiere, having begun its London theatre journey at the Prince Edward Theatre in 1999, Mamma Mia! now plays at the Novello Theatre , where it delights and entertains audiences over and over again!

Written by Catherine Johnson , Mamma Mia! tells the hilarious and heartwarming story of a young woman and her mother who find themselves re-living past events on the eve of the daughter’s wedding.

Set in sun-soaked Greece, the story centres on Sophie, who is about to be married to Sky. While her mother Donna prepares her guest house for the wedding, Sophie is focussing on things other than her husband-to-be. She’s on a mission to find the identity of her real father.  Behind her mother’s back she has invited three possible suspects from Donna’s free-loving past life to the wedding.

To Sophie’s shock – and her mother’s surprise – they all turn up. But which one will take her down the aisle and will any of them rekindle relations with Donna?

Mamma Mia! is directed by Phyllida Lloyd , whose directorial credits include The Prime Of Miss Jean Brodie at the National Theatre and is produced by  Judy Craymer and Richard East.

The 2008 film of the same name, starring Amanda Seyfried , Meryl Streep , Pierce Brosnan , Colin Firth , Stellan Skarsgard and Julie Walters was written, directed and produced by the same creative team, and went on to become the highest grossing live action musical film ever.

The musical features some of ABBA’s most famous songs, including Does Your Mother Know, Dancing Queen, Money Money Money, Take A Chance On Me, Super Trouper, The Winner Takes It All and, of course, the title song Mamma Mia!.

And if you’re a teacher/careers advisor, Education Packs for this show (and more) are available in our  Schools Resources area.

BJÖRN ULVAEUS ( Music & Lyrics ) 1945 Björn was born on 25 April in Gothenburg. When he was six years old, the family moved to the small town of Västervik, and this is where Björn grew up. In the mid-Fifties, Björn fell in love with rock’n’roll and skif e. By the early Sixties, he was a member of a folk group called the West Bay Singers. 1963 The group entered a talent contest arranged by Swedish radio. This led to discovery by songwriter and publisher Stig Anderson and his partner, Bengt Bernhag. Stig and Bengt had recently started a record company called Polar Music. The band acquired a new name, the Hootenanny Singers, and quickly became one of Sweden’s most popular groups of the Sixties. 1966 Björn had a chance meeting with Benny Andersson, himself a member of Sweden’s number-one pop group, The Hep Stars. They hit it off and wrote their rst song together, ‘Isn’t It Easy to Say’. Björn recorded a couple of solo singles in the late Sixties, at which point he also started concentrating more on his collaboration with Benny Andersson. 1970 Björn and Benny started releasing records as a duo and also staged a cabaret show together with their fiancées, Agnetha Fältskog and Anni-Frid Lyngstad. 1971 Björn and Agnetha married on 6 July. 1972-82 ABBA. 1982 Björn and Benny started writing the musical Chess with lyricist Tim Rice. 1984 A concept album for Chess was released in the autumn. 1986 The musical opened in London’s West End in May. 1988 Chess received its Broadway premiere. A reworked version of the musical opened in Stockholm, Sweden, in 2002. 1990 Björn and Benny decided to write a new musical. This time, they wanted to write exclusively in Swedish, and they chose the Emigrants novel series by author Vilhelm Moberg as the basis for their work. 1995 The resulting musical, Kristina från Duvemåla (Kristina from Duvemåla), opened in October. The show ran for three and a half years at various theatres in the Swedish cities of Malmö, Gothenburg and Stockholm. Björn and Benny’s most recent musical is Hjälp sökes (Help Wanted), a collaboration with playwright Kristina Lugn and Kristina director Lars Rudolfsson. Björn writes many of the lyrics for the Benny Andersson Orchestra, and has involved himself in the stagings of MAMMA MIA! . 2008 MAMMA MIA! THE MOVIE was released. 2016 MAMMA MIA! THE PARTY opened in Stockholm in January, with Björn as one of the producers. 2018 MAMMA MIA! HERE WE GO AGAIN was released.

Review: MAMMA MIA! at Kansas City Music Hall

What did our critic think of MAMMA MIA! at Kansas City Music Hall?

pixeltracker

Plain old feel-good musicals are rare. The “Dancing Queen” of this limited genre is “Mamma Mia!” The 25th Anniversary tour of this truly enjoyable evening out at the theatre plays through Sunday, March 10, 2024, at the Kansas City Music Hall in downtown Kansas City.

The 25th Anniversary Tour opened in Denver on October 31, 2023, and still retains the cast excitement and energy that is essential for this kind of show.  Everybody in this company is excellent.

Leading ladies Christine Sherrill as Donna, Alisa Melendez as Sophie, and potential Dad Victor Wallace as Sam are as good at their craft as any actors you might see on the Great White Way.   You might even call the entire cast of this show “ Super Troupers .” I think I just did. (Sorry about that).

Review: MAMMA MIA! at Kansas City Music Hall

The entire musical score of “Mamma Mia” comes from the catalog of a Swedish soft rock supergroup called ABBA.  ABBA were the initials of the two married couples Agnetha Fältskog ,  Björn Ulvaeus ,  Benny Andersson , and  Anni-Frid Lyngstad , who made up the group.   The group sang as a hobby, before winning an All-Europe talent competition in the early 1970s.

Somehow, ABBA struck a chord with audiences.  Although not universally praised by critics, the quartet had a knack for creating dozens of tunes that resonate. These tunes are almost all of the happy ear-worm variety.  You can’t keep them out of your head.  ABBA performed mainly from 1972 to 1982.  They sold a staggering half billion records.

ABBA was also known for their outlandish, colorful, spandex costumes.  Sure, the ladies looked great in the costumes, but the driving force was Swedish law at the time.  Only costumes that could not be worn on the street were deductible.

Fast forward a decade. A British theatrical producer named Judy Craymer approached Andersson and Ulvaeus about adapting the ABBA catalog of music into a musical comedy.  Spin forward another fifteen years and they hired playwright Catherine Johnson to write a libretto.  The result was eventually "Mamma Mia!"

Donna Sheridan and her daughter Sophie live and operate a small hotel on an idyllic Greek island. Donna has raised Sophie as a single Mom.

Back in the day, Donna and her two best friends Tanya and Rosie were wild children of the Flower-Power generation. a rock group called “Donna and the Dynamos.”

Review: MAMMA MIA! at Kansas City Music Hall

Sophie Sheridan is getting married and longs for her father to walk her down the aisle. There is a problem.  Sophie doesn’t know her father’s identity. Neither does Donna for sure.

Sophie finds Donna’s old diary from the time when Donna must have been pregnant with Sophie. She identifies three likely Dad suspects from the diary entries and invites them all to the wedding under Donna’s signature.  And all the potential Dads accept! Oops!

The result is by turns funny, bawdy, sentimental, exuberant, and unforgettable.  The curtain call turns into an ABBA concert with the group’s greatest hits and the leading actors all attired in iconic ABBA costumes.

Review: MAMMA MIA! at Kansas City Music Hall

Sets and lighting are minimal, but just enough.  This production proves less can be more.

The show ends with the entire audience on its feet. A good portion of the audience sings and dances along. They retreat to their vehicles with a smile on their faces.

Two senior gentlemen were overheard chatting as they walked down the stairs. “You know, I remember when these songs were new”

I do too.  I suspect there can be no better review.

Buy tickets for “Mamma Mia” are available at www.kansascity.broadway.com/shows or by telephone at (816)421-7500.
