A guide to the immigration and visa requirements for visiting the Cayman Islands

All people arriving in the Cayman Islands are required to produce to an Immigration Officer a valid passport or other travel document that establishes his identity, nationality and his place of permanent residence. People travelling to the Cayman Islands on a passport are not required to prove their place of permanent residence upon entry; however, people who are able to enter without a passport (i.e. persons permanently resident in and travelling from the UK, the US or Canada) must prove their place of residence. All visitors must have a return ticket.

By law, a person who has no other basis to enter the Cayman Islands (i.e. a Work Permit), and no right to residence, may be admitted into Cayman as a visitor for up to six months, with extensions permissible in rare circumstances thereafter. However, many people arriving in Cayman will be permitted entry for an initial 30 days only, unless they own property in which they will be staying and can demonstrate an ability to maintain themselves during their stay. 

Requirements for Visitors

If a person is admitted as a visitor, wants to stay longer and an extension beyond 30 days was not approved on initial arrival, then they must go to Customs and Border Control (CBC) located on 94A Elgin Avenue in George Town before their time runs out, fill in an extension form and request to remain longer. This process can also be done online at  www.cbc.gov.ky . Fees of CI$50 are payable for the first extension and CI$100 for each further extension. Note: It can get quite expensive after a few months! However, if you plan well in advance and come prepared with a letter showing you can support yourself, have health insurance and have somewhere to live, you may possibly be given a longer period to stay upon landing.

If a visitor is arriving for a significant period, like many of our returning ‘snow birds’ do over the winter period, they will generally be admitted for up to six months. For this, they must show the entry officer their return ticket, a very recent bank or investment statement showing that they have sufficient funds to support themselves and a hotel/condo reservation or a lease. This paperwork is looked at very discreetly and returned to the visitor. If the visitor owns a home in the Cayman Islands and can show the Land Register, then a six month permission will be granted to them and other visitors accompanying them.

Visas for Cayman

Nationals of the USA, Canada, the UK and most countries within the British Commonwealth do not require visas to enter the Cayman Islands. Citizens of Jamaica (between the ages of 15 and 70), Honduras and the Philippines, for example, do. Check the ‘Visa’ section of www.cbc.gov.ky  if you need one. However, if you hold a passport from Jamaica, India or China and you have a US, UK or Canadian Visa, you do not need a separate Cayman Visa. However, you must enter Cayman directly from the country where you hold the visa and can only stay in the Cayman Islands for 30 days. Where visas are required, they must be sought and obtained prior to travel. Contact the British Embassy or Consulate with a visa department that is nearest you. Applying for a Visitor Extension

If you are a visitor and would like to remain longer than the amount of time you were given on entry to the Cayman Islands, then the following must be done prior to your time running out: 

Visit this page of the Cayman Islands Customs & Border Control website, fill in the form, include your contact information, and within 24-48 hours you will get a video call on WhatsApp, Zoom ir Skype to confirm your identity. 

The applicant must provide evidence of his/her ability to support themselves in the Cayman Islands. If an applicant is dependent upon hospitality being furnished by a friend or relative, the applicant is advised to have his/her host provide proof of support to avoid delay.

The below list of documents (not exhaustive) should be presented together with the application to aid in the processing of an application. Some may not be relevant but gather whatever you think might be needed:

- Travel documents (return plane ticket or confirmation of reservation) - Processing fee - The white landing card (E/D Card) - Proof of finances, or if being sponsored, the sponsors proof of solvency - Birth certificate - Marriage certificate - Evidence of Property/Land registration - Bail bond - Deed poll - Health Insurance - Doctor’s note - Custody or Guardianship agreements

Fees of CI$50 are payable for the first extension and CI$100 for each further extension.

Seeking employment whilst in the Cayman Islands as a visitor

There is no prohibition against seeking employment whilst visiting the Islands as a tourist, however, if you do find employment then you cannot be on the island when the work permit is submitted to the Department of WORC.

A Business Visitor’s Permit & Visitor’s Work Visa

Any business in Cayman that regularly needs workers to come from overseas to work for no more than 14 days on any particular visit may seek to apply for a Business Visitor’s Permit, allowing such individual(s) permission to work for a specified number of visits per year, subject to strict limitations. These Business Visitor’s Permits are not available for people attending for one visit only. Please see this page for the Business Visitors Permit application form . 

There is also a category of Visitor’s Work Visa that permits individuals who are employed outside of the Islands (and who wish to visit for up to five calendar days at a time to engage in commercial activity with a locally licensed entity or person/sponsor) to apply for the grant of a Visitor’s Work Visa. To obtain a grant on arrival, the local business or visiting worker must send to Customs and Border Control a cover letter explaining why the visitor is coming to Cayman and what they are coming to do, and include the 'Visitor Work Visa Letter of Invitation' which can be filled in online, printed off, signed and then emailed - no later than 24 hours before the visitor is arriving - to  [email protected] . It should be noted that once approved, the person will be required to pay CI$100 at the airport. The Visitor’s Work Visa is not available to those who are employed in a professional capacity (lawyers, accountants, medical professionals, architects, surveyors, teachers and other occupations) or who are otherwise not entitled to a work permit by virtue of having reached their term limit. The Visitor’s Work Visa also does not exempt someone from the requirement to obtain an entry visa if they possess a passport from a country that would otherwise require a Visitor’s Visa to enter the Cayman Islands. In addition, a business visitor may not hold more than one Visitor’s Work Visa in relation to the same sponsor or sponsors within the same calendar month, but unlike a Business Visitor’s Permit, a Visitor’s Work Visa may be used for a single visit. Visitor’s Work Visas are dealt with by Customs and Border Control, not WORC.

Currency –  The Cayman Islands dollar (CI$) is the native currency. Additionally, the US currency is commonly used. For example, $1 is roughly equal to CI$ 0.83.

Daily budget for one person  – Per individual, per day, set aside CI$ 105 ($125).

Visa information for the Cayman Islands

For up to 30 days, most visitors—including citizens of the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom—do not need a visa to enter the Cayman Islands.

Typical costs and budget for the Cayman Islands

Daily spending  – Approximately CI$ 105 ($125) per individual.

Meals  – CI$ 16 ($20) should be budgeted for a substantial meal.

Transport  – CI$ 8 to 16 ($10 to $20) per day is what you should budget for transportation.

Hotel  – In the Cayman Islands, a couple’s motel room costs about CI$100 ($120) per night.

The typical expense of a one-week trip for two individuals to the Cayman Islands is CI$ 3700 ($3081).

Transport and best ways to travel around the Cayman Islands

Grand Cayman and Cayman Brac offer vehicle rentals, but Little Cayman does not. Drivers must be older than 21 and have a current driver’s license. The season and the style of the vehicle can have an impact on rental car prices.

All three islands have taxi services, and the government controls the cost. On Grand Cayman, locating taxis is simple, and prices depend on how far you travel. On Cayman Brac and Little Cayman, neighboring islands,

where taxis are less prevalent, tourists may need to make transportation arrangements in preparation.

Additionally, boats are accessible for island hopping, with many businesses providing private services between the islands. By boat, the trip from Cayman Brac to Little Cayman takes about 30 minutes, whereas the journey from Cayman Brac to Grand Cayman takes about 90 minutes.

On Grand Cayman, public vehicles are available, and each trip costs CI$2. Most of the island is serviced by buses, which operate from early morning until late at night. Bus service on Cayman Brac and Little Cayman is less regular, and Saturdays may see a reduction in service.

Safety in the Cayman Islands

Although it is usually safe to journey to the Cayman Islands, tourists should still take security precautions to protect themselves. Following are some protection recommendations for visitors to the Cayman Islands:

Many different animals live on the Cayman Islands, including iguanas and aquatic creatures. As these creatures can be hazardous, visitors should avoid approaching or giving food.

Particularly in tourism regions, theft is a possibility. Therefore, besides being mindful of their surroundings, visitors should take measures to secure their valuables.

Due to left-hand driving and congested roadways, traveling in the Cayman Islands can be difficult. Therefore, visitors should drive carefully and obey all road regulations when in the area.

The Caribbean region, where the Cayman Islands are situated, is subject to cyclones and tropical disturbances from June to November. Therefore, visitors should be mindful of the weather and follow local officials’ instructions.

Weather in the Cayman Islands

The Cayman Islands are best visited between December and April when travel is at its busiest. The weather is typically pleasant and mild during this period, with typical highs of 20°C to 30°C (70°F to 80°F). This makes it the perfect time to go swimming, to the shore, and to engage in other outdoor activities.

Must do and see in the Cayman Islands

Stingray City:  Located in Grand Cayman’s North Sound, Stingray City offers tourists a one-of-a-kind opportunity to get up close and personal with amiable southern stingrays in their native environment. Visitors can reserve a trip to go stingray swimming or watch them from a glass-bottom skiff.

George Town:  This vibrant capital metropolis provides various dining, retail, and cultural opportunities. Visitors may visit neighborhood markets, discover historical locations like the Pedro St. James National Historic Site, or eat at one of the many eateries to experience regional food.

Sea turtles of all ages and sizes can be found at the Cayman Turtle Centre. Visitors can observe marine turtles in an estuary and feed and swim with them.

Jerk chicken:  A milder form of jerk seasoning than the Jamaican variant is available in the Cayman Islands. Rice, peas, and plantains are usually served with jerk poultry that has been cooked over an open flame.

Conch fritters:  Conch is a well-liked mollusk in the area. Conch fritters are seasoned, fried, bite-sized chunks of conch that are usually served with a hot dipping condiment.

Entry, Exit and Visa Requirements

U.S. citizens traveling to the Cayman Islands for work must obtain a work permit from the Department of Immigration of the Cayman Islands, telephone (345) 949-8344. Visit or call the Cayman Islands Department of Tourism offices in Miami at (305) 599-9033, New York (212) 889-9009, Houston (713) 461-1317 or Chicago (630) 705-0650 for the most current visa information. 

Exit Information:

There is a departure tax for travelers age 12 and older, which is included in airfare.

Immunization Requirements: Visit the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Health Information for Travelers to Cayman Islands (U.K.) page for more information.

Customs:  Please see the  Cayman Islands Customs  portal for comprehensive customs information.

Common prohibited items are as follows:

• Importing: Firearms, ammunition, spear guns, pole spears, Hawaiian slings, plants and plant cuttings, raw fruits and vegetables.
• Exporting or transshipping: sea turtle products.

HIV/AIDS restrictions: The U.S. Department of State is unaware of any HIV/AIDS entry restrictions for visitors to or foreign residents of the Cayman Islands.

Safety and Security

The Cayman Islands are a safe place with little criminal activity affecting tourists. 

Crime:  Crime of opportunity such as pick-pocketing and purse snatchings occasionally occur. Police in the Cayman Islands enforce laws against illegal drugs, guns and ammunition.

Victims of Crime: Report crimes to the local police at 911 (the local equivalent of “911” in the U.S.) and contact the U.S. Embassy at +1-876-702-6000.

Remember that local authorities are responsible for investigating and prosecuting the crime.

These are some of the things the Embassy can do for you as a crime victim:

• assist you in reporting a crime to the police
• contact relatives or friends with your written consent
• explain the local criminal justice process in general terms

• provide an emergency loan for repatriation to the United States and/or limited medical support in cases of destitution

Domestic Violence: U.S. citizen victims of domestic violence may contact the Embassy for assistance. If you are in immediate danger, first contact the local police at 911.

Tourism:  The tourism industry is unevenly regulated, and the regularity and quality of safety inspections vary widely by industry and attraction.  Hazardous areas/activities are not always identified with appropriate signage, and staff may not be trained or certified either by the host government or by recognized authorities in the field. In the event of an injury, appropriate medical treatment is typically available only on Grand Cayman, with limited care available on Cayman Brac and Little Cayman. First responders are generally unable to access the smaller islands to provide urgent medical treatment. U.S. citizens are encouraged to purchase medical evacuation insurance . 

Local Laws & Special Circumstances

Criminal Penalties: You are subject to the laws of the Cayman Islands while you are here. If you violate local laws, even unknowingly, you may be deported, arrested, or imprisoned. 

Furthermore, some laws are also prosecutable in the United States, regardless of local law. For examples, see our website on crimes against minors abroad and the Department of Justice website.

Arrest Notification: If you are arrested or detained, ask police or prison officials to notify the U.S. Embassy immediately. See our webpage for further information.

Common reasons for arrest include:

• Carrying ammunition and firearms into the Cayman Islands. (Even a single bullet inadvertently loose in a carry-on bag can lead to arrest.)
• Driving under the influence of alcohol or other intoxicants.
• Buying, selling, holding or taking illegal drugs under any circumstances.

Firearms: You are strictly forbidden to import or possess firearms in the Cayman Islands.

• A Conceal Carry Permit, employment by a police agency, or service in U.S. Armed Forces does NOT allow you to bring a firearm or ammunition into the Cayman Islands.
• If you travel with firearms, firearm components & parts and/or ammunition to the Cayman Islands, you will be arrested and referred to the local courts for prosecution which will result in a substantial fine and/or incarceration for an unspecified amount of time.

LGBTI Travelers: There are no legal restrictions on same-sex sexual relations or the organization of LGBTI events in the Cayman Islands.

Travelers Who Require Accessibility Assistance: While in the Cayman Islands, individuals with disabilities may find accessibility and accommodation very different from what you find in the United States.

• The Cayman Islands lack comprehensive disability legislation, and, while many hotels and resorts are well-equipped for disabled guests, other tourist facilities, such as the airport and the cruise ship dock, are much less so.

Medical Care: The quality of medical care in the Cayman Islands is generally comparable to that available in the United States, but some procedures and cases requiring critical care may require medical evacuation to the United States. Doctors and hospitals often expect immediate payment for health services.

Medical Insurance: Make sure your health insurance plan provides coverage overseas. Most care providers overseas only accept cash payments. See our webpage for more information on insurance coverage overseas. 

We strongly recommend supplemental insurance  to cover medical evacuation.

Carry prescription medication in original packaging, along with your doctor’s prescription. 

We do not pay medical bills. Be aware that U.S. Medicare does not apply overseas. 

Snorkeling/SCUBA Diving: Each year, U.S. citizens drown or suffer cardiac arrest while snorkeling or SCUBA diving in the Cayman Islands. Remember:

Be honest with your instructor or the dive shop if you have a pre-existing medical condition that could be exacerbated when snorkeling or diving; and

Check that a hyperbaric chamber is available for treatment of decompression illness.

Emergency Services: Emergency response services are available in the Cayman Islands.

The following diseases are prevalent: Zika Virus , Chikungunya , Dengue Fever . 

Zika virus is a mosquito-borne illness that can be spread from a pregnant woman to her unborn baby, as well as through sexual contact. The CDC has concluded that the Zika virus is a cause of microcephaly and other severe fetal brain defects in some fetuses and babies born to infected mothers. Zika outbreaks have been reported on Curacao. For additional information about Zika, including travel advisories, visit the CDC website .

Chikunguya and Dengue are mosquito-borne illnesses that are becoming more frequent in tropical and equatorial climates around the world. Preventing mosquito bites is the most important way to prevent these illnesses. Travelers should carry and use CDC recommended insect repellents .

Vaccinations: Be up-to-date on all vaccinations recommended by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Travel and Transportation

Road Conditions and Safety: Vehicles in the Cayman Islands travel on the left-hand side of the road.

Traffic Laws: You must obtain a temporary driver’s license at a car rental agency or police station by presenting a valid U.S. driver’s license and paying a small fee.

• Traffic circles (“roundabouts”) are often poorly marked and require traffic to move in a clockwise direction;
• Motorists entering a roundabout must yield to those already in it;
• All passengers are required to wear seat belts; and
• Laws against driving while intoxicated are strictly enforced, with a legal maximum blood alcohol level set at 100 milligrams per 100 milliliters of blood (equivalent to a .10 blood/alcohol level in the United States).

Entry requirements.

This information is for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK. It is based on the UK government’s understanding of the current rules for the most common types of travel.

The authorities in the Cayman Islands set and enforce entry rules. If you’re not sure how these requirements apply to you, check the Cayman Islands Customs and Border Control .

COVID-19 rules

There are no COVID-19 testing or vaccination requirements for travellers entering the Cayman Islands.

Passport validity requirements

To enter the Cayman Islands, your passport must be valid for the duration of your stay. 

Check with your travel provider that your passport and other travel documents meet requirements. Renew your passport if you need to.

You will be denied entry if you try to use a passport that has been reported lost or stolen.

You can enter the Cayman Islands for up to 30 days without a UK passport if you have photo identification and a certified copy of a UK birth certificate, or a naturalisation certificate.

Visa requirements

You can visit the Cayman Islands without a visa for up to 6 months, for business or tourism.

After 6 months, you can apply for an extension – applications are considered on a case-by-case basis.

To work, study or request residency, check the Cayman Islands immigration requirements . It is not usually possible to apply for a work permit while you are in the country as a visitor.

Checks at border control

Border officials may ask to see a return or onward ticket and proof of funds.

Customs rules

There are strict rules about goods you can take into or out of the Cayman Islands . You must declare anything that may be prohibited or subject to tax or duty. This includes gambling appliances.

Check customs regulations if you want to import pets, plants, or animal or plant products.

It is illegal to take some marine and animal specimens from the islands. If in doubt, check with the customs office before buying such items.

Taking money into the Cayman Islands

You must make a customs declaration if you bring more than 10,000 in Cayman Island dollars or the same amount in foreign cash.

When applying online for a Visa, below are a list of the required documents to be included with the online application form:

• A passport sized photo of applicant

• A copy of the bio-page of applicant’s passport

• Police Clearance Certificate (translated into English, if applicable)

• Birth Certificates for individuals under the age of 18,

• Permission letters from parent/guardian for underage children to travel inclusive of proof of identity

• Proof of employment (job letter) from sponsor, or applicant if self-sponsored

• Proof of finances (bank statement for the last two months, with name of account holder visible) from sponsor, or applicant if self-sponsored

Get a Cayman Islands Visa

• When is the best time to apply for my Cayman Islands visa? The best time to apply for your Cayman Islands visa is 1-2 months before your travel date.
• Do I have to send you my passport to get a Cayman Islands visa? Is it safe to send a passport? You will need to send your actual passport, not a copy of it. The Cayman Islands visa is stamped on your passport and will become one of your passport pages. Visa requests cannot be processed without your original passport. Because of the importance of your passport, we strongly suggest that you send your application and passport to CIBTvisas in a secure way, using a traceable courier such as FedEx, UPS, Express Mail or Certified Mail.

Business Visa Application Requirements for a Cayman Islands Visa

Visa Exempt

• Hold a passport valid for the period of intended stay with one blank visa page
• Hold proof of onward and return flights
• Hold all documents required for the next destination
• Hold documents showing proof of travel purpose (e.g. business cover or support letter, conference registrations, etc.)
• Hold proof of sufficient funds relative to your intended length of stay
• It is recommended that you confirm with your airline that boarding will be permitted without a visa

• Business Visitor’s Permit

These permits allow a business visitor to work in the Cayman Islands for a couple of days once a year or a couple of days a few times a year.

• Work Permits

Any business in Cayman which regularly needs workers to come from overseas to work for no more than 14 days on any particular visit, may seek to apply for a Business Visitor’s Permit allowing such individual(s) permission to work for a specified number of visits per year, subject to strict limitations. There is also a category of Visitor’s Work Visa, which permits individuals who are employed outside of the Islands, and who wish to visit for up to five calendar days at a time, in order to engage in commercial activity with a locally licensed entity or person (a ‘sponsor’), to apply for the grant of a Visitor’s Work Visa.

These Business Visitor’s Permits are not available for people attending for one visit only. There is also a category of Visitor’s Work Visa, which permits individuals who are employed outside of the Islands, and who wish to visit for up to five calendar days at a time, in order to engage in commercial activity with a locally licensed entity or person (a ‘sponsor’), to apply for the grant of a Visitor’s Work Visa. To obtain a grant on arrival, the requirements are as follows: the local business or visiting worker must download a ‘Letter of Invitation’ form from the Immigration website and email it to [email protected] at least 24 hours before they are due to arrive. It should be noted that once approved, the person will be required to pay CI$100 at the airport.

The Visitor’s Work Visa is not available to those who are employed in a professional capacity (lawyers, accountants, medical professionals, architects, surveyors, teachers and other occupations) or who are otherwise not entitled to a work permit by virtue of having reached their term limit. The Visitor’s Work Visa also does not exempt someone from the requirement to obtain an entry visa if they possess a passport from a country which would otherwise require a Visitor’s Visa to enter the Cayman Islands. In addition, a business visitor may not hold more than one Visitor’s Work Visa in relation to the same sponsor or sponsors within the same calendar month, but, unlike a Business Visitor’s Permit, a Visitor’s Visa may be used for a single visit.

Visitors Work Visas are dealt with by Customs and Border Control (not WORC).
