Korea Bike Tour: An Ultimate Guide for Cyclists

' src=

Cycling across South Korea offers a unique and thrilling way to immerse oneself in the country’s spectacular landscapes. This guide provides a comprehensive look at the nation’s finest cycling routes and offers handy tips to help you prepare for an unforgettable biking adventure.

Unpacking South Korea’s Advanced Cycling Infrastructure

South Korea’s cycling infrastructure is a testament to the country’s dedication to promoting sustainable and active transportation. The government has made significant investments to develop extensive cycling paths that stretch thousands of kilometers across urban and rural settings alike. These paths are not only well-marked but also well-equipped with amenities like bike repair stations, resting spots, and convenience stores for the comfort of cyclists.

Suggested Image: A panoramic view of a cyclist traversing a scenic bike path in South Korea.

An Epic Ride Along the Four Rivers Cross-Country Cycling Road

Arguably the crown jewel of South Korea’s cycling infrastructure is the Four Rivers Cross-Country Cycling Road. This route spans more than 600 kilometers from Incheon in the west to Busan in the south, offering cyclists a chance to cross the entire length of the country on two wheels.

Getting Acquainted with the Route

As implied by its name, the Four Rivers Cross-Country Cycling Road tracks the courses of four major rivers – the Han, Nakdong, Geum, and Yeongsan. Cycling along these rivers, you’ll encounter an array of stunning scenes, from expansive cityscapes to tranquil countryside views.

Key Points of Interest Along the Route

  • Han River: As the route commences, you’ll skirt the edges of Seoul, giving you a unique perspective of the city’s vibrancy and architectural marvels.
  • Ara Canal: As you proceed, you’ll traverse the scenic Ara Canal, where the magnificent Incheon Bridge awaits.
  • Chungju Lake: As you enter the heartland of Korea, take a breather at Chungju Lake. Surrounded by lush mountains, it offers a peaceful and picturesque resting spot.
  • Busan: The route concludes in the lively coastal city of Busan. Reward yourself with a dip in the sea and a feast on delectable local seafood.

Cycling Around Jeju Island: A Journey Through a Volcanic Wonderland

In addition to the mainland, Jeju Island, known as the “Hawaii of Korea,” presents a distinct and rewarding biking route. The Jeju Olle Trail takes you around the entire island, showcasing its remarkable volcanic landscapes, pristine beaches, and quaint rural villages.

A Closer Look at the Route

The Jeju Olle Trail, circling the entire island, measures roughly 200 kilometers. While the route length may seem daunting, it’s predominantly flat terrain makes it accessible to bikers of all experience levels.

Notable Locations Along the Route

  • Seongsan Ilchulbong: Also known as “Sunrise Peak,” this UNESCO World Heritage Site provides panoramic views of the island from the top of a volcanic tuff cone.
  • Hallasan National Park: Centered around South Korea’s highest peak, this national park is a biodiversity hotspot offering a glimpse into the island’s unique flora and fauna.
  • Hyeopjae Beach: Boasting crystal-clear turquoise waters and white sandy shores, Hyeopjae Beach is a slice of tropical paradise on Jeju Island.

Tips and Resources for A Smooth Cycling Adventure

A successful cycling tour requires ample preparation. Besides ensuring your bike and equipment are in top condition, it’s critical to keep an eye on the weather forecast and to pack essential supplies like water, food, repair kits, and a first aid kit.

Wrapping Up: The Allure of a Korean Bike Tour

Whether you’re an experienced cyclist or a newcomer to bike touring, South Korea’s bike routes promise a rewarding and enriching travel experience. So, strap on your helmet, hop on your bike, and get ready to explore the vibrant culture, rich history, and spectacular landscapes of South Korea.

Latin america, authentic korea by bicycle, about this cycle tour.

South Korea seamlessly blends age-old traditions with state-of-the-art modernity. Dubbed the "Land of the Morning Calm," the peninsular nation evokes images of misty mountains, serene rivers, and ancient heritage. Yet, alongside this tranquility, throbs an electrifying pulse in the metropolitanism of its bustling cities and the technological dynamism in all things from commerce to transport.

This tour has been designed to give you a taste of authentic Korea as we ride leisurely along the country’s world-class cycling paths to discover both the old and the new. Starting in Seoul, we hit the ground running with a ramble through its historic core before spending five days cycling beside wide rivers that meander through rolling hills, vast farmlands, and thriving towns. We reserve a day for an off-saddle exploration of Andong Hahoe Village, a UNESCO World Heritage Site dating back 600 years, and the tour ends back in Seoul. Most nights are spent in small cities hardly visited by foreign tourists, and during mealtimes we let loose on the diverse and delectable world of Korean cuisine!

Join us on this delightful Korean cycling journey, showcasing some of the country’s finest inland cycling routes and scenery. As the tour starts and ends in Seoul, the adventure is perfect for those who want to add an active and off-the-beaten path element to a longer Korean holiday or those with more limited time looking to make the most out of 9 days in the country.

Activity Profile

What's included, what's excluded, trip profile.

On this tour, we cycle 293 km in five cycling days, predominantly on the country’s world-class cycling paths. For the most part, these paths follow the rivers though at times, they divert more inland. Some portions will be on rural roads where mild vehicle traffic may be expected . At the beginning of the cycling route in Seoul we’ll be riding in bike lanes. On some days we’ll be using the support van to get to the cycling start point or get from the end point to the day’s hotel. Your guide’s expert knowledge of the area and terrain means that you always know what is coming up in terms of distance and difficulty. This makes a tremendous difference, as does the constant supply of water and refreshments along the way.

Suitability: This trip is suitable for anyone with a reasonable level of fitness and some experience spending several hours in the saddle. This trip is not too arduous; however, daily distances are between 50 - 70 km and there are gradual climbs of up to 500 m. Riders with less experience are more than welcome, but the fitter you are, the more you will enjoy it.

Biking Conditions: This trip is primarily on dedicated bicycle paths in very good condition. The terrain is mostly flat though there are some undulating sections.

Day 1 Arrive in Seoul

We meet at our tour hotel in Seoul at 13:00 hrs. (01:00 PM) and waste no time diving into Korea’s enigmatic history. Using Seoul’s excellent public transportation system, we’ll head to the city’s historic core and visit Gyeongbokgung Palace. This massive walled complex houses beautifully adorned royal halls, traditional architecture, and serene courtyards, harking back to the early days of the Josean Dynasty who ruled the Korean Peninsula for a whopping five centuries! We’ll also stroll through the nearby neighborhood of Insa-Dong which – crammed with boutiques, craft shops, cafes, and eateries – showcases that seamless blend of old and new so characteristic of Seoul. In the evening we’ll enjoy a welcome dinner - our first of many Korean feasts on this tour!

Day 2 Seoul – Namyangju

Our first day of riding involves a striking visual shift from mega city to countryside. Starting from the heart of metropolitan Seoul we ride on designated bike lanes, avoiding congestion while still feeling the high-octane energy of the capital city all around us. For the first 8 km we follow the path of the Cheonggyecheon Stream, a greenified urban waterway which cuts right through the city. We will then loop onto the Han River Bike Path, riding around 40 km along waterfront roads, parks, and promenades. Along the way we’ll see many local cycling enthusiasts enjoying rides of their own - Seoul is truly one of the most cycling friendly cities in the world! The further we press forward, however, the crowds thin out and Seoul’s skylane and urban sprawl begins to fade in the distance. Approaching the confluence of the Han and Bukhan River, it will be as if we have been transported to a different world. The final 20 km of the ride are north along a bike path following the course of the Bukhan River, surrounded by lush countryside and rolling hills. We spend the night near the city of Namyangju in Gyeonggi Province.

korea cycling tour

Day 3 Namyangju – Chuncheon

We continue our journey along the banks of the Bukhan River, riding north to the city of Chuncheon. While, for the most part, the riding is relatively flat with no big climbs, we are pretty much surrounded by a topography of rolling hills at all times – 70% of South Korea is covered by hills and mountain ranges after all! The initial 10 km of the ride are along the river before cutting through a cultivated valley floor, cycling past a mix of open fields, farmlands, and communities buzzing with life. At 30 km we rejoin the Bukhan River and we’ll be skirting along its course all the way to Chuncheon. Along the way we’ll be crossing multiple bridges and enjoy long stretches of quiet, backcountry riding along forested hillsides. Tonight we stay in Chuncheon which , besides being well known for “dakgalbi” (Korean style chicken and vegetable stir-fry), is perhaps most famous for being the setting for the enormously popular K-drama series, Winter Sonata.

korea cycling tour

Day 4 Chuncheon – Yeoju

We take a short transfer in the support van to get us back to the vicinity of Namyangju. Here we saddle up and follow the Bukhsan River south to a convergence with the Namhan River, another of South Korea’s major waterways. We follow its course southwards to the city of Yeoju. This is another fantastic day of cycling along a dedicated cycling path hugging the river, offering an endless photoreal of scenes of life in central Korea. At times rural and at times more urban, the visuals are ever changing, though always accompanied by the river and rolling hills! We end the ride in the city of Yeoju, renowned for its centuries-old heritage of ceramic craftsmanship, particularly its exquisite Korean porcelain, which has earned it the title of "City of Porcelain."

korea cycling tour

Day 5 Yeoju – Sangju

We begin our day with a short ride to Silleuksa Temple. Here we get a taste of ancient Korea as we explore this splendid Buhddhist temple complex situated by the river and dating back to the 6th-century AD. We’ll learn about the early days of Buddhism in Korea and appreciate the well-preserved architecture, such as the main hall adorned with exquisite ceramic roof tiles, each intricately designed with floral motifs. Back on our bikes, we continue south along the Namhan River bike path, cutting through serene rural landscapes covered with rice paddies and villages. Our cycling end point is Chungju where we’ll hop in the support van and transfer to the small city of Sangju where we spend the night.

korea cycling tour

Day 6 Sangju – Andong

On our last riding day we switch rivers one final time as we cycle east from Sangju along the Nakdong River. This is a particularly scenic rural area, with the river – and our cycling route – braiding its way through rice paddies, vegetable farms, quaint villages, and dense woodlands. While we stick to the valley floor, panoramas of the lush hillscape surrounding us are ever present. We end the ride near Andong Hahoe Village and then hop in the van to get to our hotel in nearby Andong city. Hahoe Village deserves a couple of hours on its own so we will return again the following day to give it our full attention!

korea cycling tour

Day 7 Andong Hahoe Village

The morning is set aside for an off-saddle exploration of Andong Hahoe Village, a treasure trove of Korean history and traditions dating back 600 years. Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the village displays the pre-modern, clan-based lifeways of rural Korea at the time of the Joseon Dynasty. We will wander the winding streets and peek into the well-preserved tile-roofed houses known as hanok. The village is also renowned for its expressive and colorful wooden masks which are used in performances of Korean folklore. After our ground-level exploration of the village, we'll hike up to the nearby Buyongdae Cliff, affording us a bird's-eye view of the picturesque Nakdong River and the sprawling countryside that stretches beyond. Spend the rest of the day at leisure - lunch and dinner are on your own today.

Day 8 Andong – Seoul

This morning, there is an option to visit a nearby Korean hot spring sauna (known as jjimjilbang) and soothe your muscles before we head back to Seoul. The transfer time is around 3 hours and after checking into the hotel you can take care of any last minute shopping and have lunch (on your own today). In the evening we’ll reconvene for a farewell dinner. A shot or two of soju may be in order to celebrate our cycling achievements!

Day 9 Departure from Seoul

After breakfast, depart for your onward journey. For those looking to extend their stay in South Korea, we suggest flying to Jeju Island to discover its volcanic landscapes or taking the train to Busan to explore the country’s second biggest city, located on the East Sea coast.

Disclaimer: The adventure cycling tours we operate often go beyond the beaten track, and the countries where we ride are not always predictable. Due to these reasons, it is occasionally necessary to reroute or update itineraries. Our guarantee is that we will not change a trip unless for safety or to improve it. Our listed hotels are always accurate at the time of writing, but should we have to change any hotel, it will always be for a similar or better one.

Nuts & Bolts

Because some people can't imagine going on a trip without their own beloved bicycle, we do not provide them as part of this tour. However, you can hire bikes locally for the price listed in the tour pricing section.

If you bring your own bike, please make sure it is in good mechanical order.

Bike Repairs

Basic spares and tools are carried by the guide and on the support vehicle, though we cannot guarantee having spares for every conceivable problem. Carrying a basic tool kit, a spare tube and a pump while riding is recommended.

Wearing a helmet is required on all our biking adventures and is non negotiable. If you do not wear a helmet you will not be allowed to cycle. Your tour leader is trained in first aid and emergency rescue, but to a large degree you must be responsible for your own safety while riding. It is therefore compulsory that you take out travel insurance that will cover you for a mountain biking tour.

You will be led by a local English-speaking guide and if the group is 9 people or more we will add another guide to the tour. All our guides are well informed in the history, culture and religions of the area where you are biking and are skilled at passing that knowledge on to you. Your guide is also medically trained and an experienced cyclist, able to handle most minor repairs en route.

The Nitty Gritty

Passports and visas.

Update on K-ETA (Korea Electronic Travel Authorization) : The South Korean government has announced that it will temporarily exempt travelers from 22 countries from the K-ETA requirement. Beginning April 1 to Dec. 31, 2024, travelers from 22 countries will no longer need to apply for K-ETA before entering the country. See here for more details and the list of exempt countries. The U.S, U.K. and Australia are on the exempt list. If you are on the exempt list then there is no need to apply. However, if your passport is not on the exempt list then make sure to get your K-ETA approved before departure via this website .

No vaccinations are needed.

Korea has four very distinct seasons: spring from mid-March to the end of May; summer from June to August can be very hot and sticky; September through end of November is fall; and winter from December to mid-March. The best time of year to visit is autumn, when skies are blue, the weather is usually sunny and warm and the forested mountainsides are ablaze with astonishing fall colours. Spring, from April to June, is another beautiful season, with generally mild temperatures and cherry blossoms spreading north across the country in April. Winters in the north are colder than in the more southerly Busan or Jeju Island.

Meals are included as per the itinerary where B = breakfast, L = lunch, D = dinner. Korean cuisine is largely based upon rice, vegetables, and meats. Traditional Korean meals are noted for the number of side dishes. Kimchi (traditional fermented vegetables) is served often, sometimes at every meal. Any special dietary requirements can also be catered for as well. Please let us know at the time of booking.

Keeping you completely hydrated is a job we take very seriously. Cold water, some energy-restoring local fruit and soft drinks are included in the tour price while riding. Soft drinks and other beverages during meals are not included. Beer is freely available everywhere in Korea, but is NOT included in the price.

Solo Travelers

SpiceRoads does not require you to pay a surcharge for travelling alone. We will arrange for you to share accommodation with another traveller of the same gender and if we can not match you up we will provide a single room at no extra charge. If you prefer not to share a single supplement is payable to guarantee your own room. The cost of the single supplement is listed above.

Extra Expenses

We recommend that you tuck away a few extra dollars, perhaps US$30 a day for incidentals. Tipping is not customary in Korea. Guides have received and accepted tips on a voluntary basis.

The currency in South Korea is the won (W) ATMs with a ‘Global’ sign often accept foreign cards. Most Global ATMs have basic instructions in English and mostly have a W700,000 limit. Motels, hotels, shops and restaurants in cities and tourist areas accept foreign credit cards, but there are still plenty of restaurants and small businesses that don’t. Be prepared to carry around some cash, especially when we are touring outside the main cities.

  Cycle Tours Global

South Korea, while densely populated, is highly urbanised with many large cities. The upside of this is that the countryside is relatively quiet and peaceful - at least away from the many busy highway corridors. Fortunately most of the time on your bike tour you're not even aware of these.

Over the past decade a huge amount has been invested in cycling infrastructure around the country - particularly outside the cities. This is not very well known by the rest of the world but that is changing and future years are likely to see a big increase in cycle tourism. The vast majority of this was in the Four Rivers Project completed in 2011.

A Practical Guide to Bicycle Touring in Korea

Asia’s best-kept bicycle touring secret.

As a bicycle touring destination, Korea is still largely off the radar of many Western tourists.  This is changing as cyclists discover the comprehensive network of riverside cycle trails and endless options for backroad biking.  Now’s the time to visit, before crowds of two-wheeled travelers find out about Asia’s best-kept secret. In spite of heavy urbanization, it’s surprisingly easy to find tranquil spots in Korea.

Mountains cover 70% of the country’s land mass, making it one of the most mountainous regions in the world.  The population is concentrated in major urban centers such as Seoul and Busan, leaving much of the countryside delightfully empty.

Korea is sure to please every type of cyclist.  Those who want to take it easy can stick to the 1,745 kilometers of long-distance cycle paths.  Korea’s far north offers endless opportunities for cyclists who love the challenge of switchbacks and steep climbs. If semi-tropical islands are more your style, hop on a ferry to Jeju and circumnavigate the island following the serene coastal cycle paths.

Korea Bicycle Touring Routes

The easiest way to discover Korea on two wheels is by following the 4 Rivers Bicycle Routes.

Download Korea 4 Rivers Bicycle Route Guide

Korea’s most popular cycling route is the 640 kilometer ride between Seoul and Busan following the Nakdonggang, and Hanggang Rivers. The entire ride is on dedicated cycle paths or quiet country roads.  The route is well signposted and there is little chance of getting lost.  The Korean Tourism Organization publishes excellent maps which point out key attractions, national landmarks and historical sites.

The river cycle paths are flat for the most part, but there are a few points where the route goes inland over some hilly terrain.  In some cases there are two options: a challenging MTB option and an easier road option. The highest point on the ride between Seoul and Busan is just 500 meters.  This is a world-class bicycle trail offering tranquil rural scenery and one splendid vista after another.

Along the way, there are many K-Water informational centers where you can use free Wi-Fi and relax in beautiful surroundings. Camping is easy along the cycle routes, while finding hotels, restaurants and grocery stores is a little tricky.  In most cases ,you will have to leave the cycle path and go into a nearby town for services.

Best Season for Bicycle Touring in Korea

The best times to visit Korea are autumn and spring. In September and October, temperatures are cool but comfortable, skies are generally blue and fall foliage is beautiful.

By November, temperatures start dipping to freezing in the mountains, but the southern provinces and Jeju island are still pleasant.

Spring brings cherry blossoms and beautiful wildflowers.

Winters can be harsh in Korea so it’s not the best time for cycle touring.

Summers tend to be unpleasantly hot and humid and can be quite rainy, especially in June.

How much does it cost to bicycle tour in Korea?

Korea is not a bargain destination like Southeast Asian countries such as Thailand and Malaysia. Costs are moderate in the countryside but can be pretty high in big cities.

Luckily, entrance to National Parks is free as are visits to many temples and museums.

A cheap meal will set you back around $4-6.

A bed in a hostel costs around $10 and a cheap hotel room in the provinces can be found for $30 – $40. You could probably find and AirBnB for around $20.

If you stick to basic accommodation and simple restaurants, $40 per day should be plenty.

Transportation is much less expensive than in Europe or the US.  You can get an express bus from Seoul to Busan for around $35.

We spent an average of $15 per day for two.  We did not go to restaurants or pay for accommodation.  This sum was almost entirely for food.

Where to Sleep on your Korea Bicycle Tour

It is possible to cycle tour in Korea without taking a tent.  The country has many inexpensive ($30-$40) motels and small guesthouses.

Many local long-distance cyclists stay at  Public Bath Houses .  This may sound odd, but it is a common form of family lodging in Korea.  Sleeping at a bath house is cheap (around $7) but the accommodation is communal.

Camping is surprisingly easy in Korea.  Official campsites are springing up all over the country as pitching a tent catches on as a popular past time.  Many campsites are free, while others charge a minimal fee of around $5.

On the weekends and during holiday periods, official campsites are crowded and probably best avoided.

Freedom camping is widely accepted.  We often pitched our tent in the village recreation/community center area.  Toilet facilities are always available and there is usually a small gazebo-like structure on which you can put your tent.  This is great if it rains.

While we normally ask for permission to camp in other countries, this does not appear to be necessary in Korea.  We were told that it is better to just camp, since individuals don’t like to take responsibility for granting permission.

Of course, it is important to respect the locals and leave the place clean and tidy.  We generally arrive near sunset and leave very early.

As always, Couchsurfing and Warm Showers are a great way to meet locals, learn more about the culture and have a free place to sleep.

If you’re in a pinch, you can always knock on one of Korea’s many churches and ask for assistance.

Is Korea a safe place for bicycle touring?

Korea is a relatively hassle-free place to travel. It has been ranked as the 13th safest country in the world.   The US, in comparison ranks 21, France ranks 15, India ranks 82 , Thailand ranks 56. Somalia comes in way down at 185. Norway grabs the top spot ranking the world’s safest country.

A low crime rate means you won’t have to worry much about your bike being stolen or waking to find unwanted visitors outside your tent. With the surge in the bicycle’s popularity, riders have gained new respect.

Drivers are generally courteous towards two-wheeled travelers, but accidents do occur at an alarmingly high rate.  Koreans run a lot of red lights and yellow is interpreted as “OK to enter the intersection, just speed up.”

On the weekends, bicycle paths are very busy and can actually be quite dangerous.  Many novice riders have little control of their bikes, swerve from side to side and may stop abruptly for no apparent reason. Be cautious and keep your distance.

Koreans are a warm and friendly people who will go out of their way to help a cyclist in distress.

In cities, you will find many English speakers.  The countryside is a more challenging place for communication, but we were always able to get our message across. Korea is the world’s best connected country, so virtually everyone has a smartphone. A translation app such as Google Translate will be useful.

Locals are known to offer foreign cyclists snacks and drinks and even offer them hospitality for the night.

Very nice! We have been following your adventures for years, and this one stands out as one of the tops. You’re right, I’d never have thought about Korea as a bike travel destination before your accounts. Now, I’m seriously considering it, once we’ve exhausted our time in Europe. Thanks for the great info and insights! ~tyler

Because of you guys, we are going to Korea next year. Thanks for showing us this wonderful country.

Greetings from Switzerland Sibil

Wow…looks like Korea might be as popular as New Zealand in a few years–you’re the fourth person who’s written in the last few days to say they’ve booked a trip to Korea! Enjoy your tour, Sibil

Hi, Eric and Amaya… I am Theresa who lives in Hwacheon, Gangwondo, where is located in border against North Korea. I was waiting your updated Korean biking tour essay, so I have read it with joy. I and my husband were on photo. hehehe… It was so short time that I couldn’t let you know the beauties of our town. Now I am serving as a staff for Hwacheon Sancheoneo Ice Festival 2014 now. In winter, it has other fascinating stories in itself. I won’t forget both of you because of your adventures and warm talking. Take care of yourselves for another trip and time. Bye.

So happy to hear from you! Your part of Korea must be absolutely stunning when covered in a blanket of snow–perhaps we will do some hard-core winter cycling one day. Thanks again for the warm welcome in your village!

Cycling in South Korea: 5 Best Routes, When to Go & Travel Tips

Cycling in South Korea can introduce you to many variety of trails

  • 15.34K views
  • ~ mins read

While South Korea is most well known for it’s addictive Korean drama series or it’s K-pop music, a lesser well-known secret is that South Korea has an ever-growing generation of cyclist! South Korea is actually one of the best countries in the world to explore by bicycle , and almost no one knows, not even cyclists! Whether you are looking for a short route nearby Seoul, or an end to end South Korea country-wide path, they have both of them.

South Korea has built massive cycling infrastructure in the past few decades, including a network of cross-country bike paths. You read that right, bike-only paths spanning the length of the country, a coastline, or across a scenic or challenging segment. These bike routes are a mix of well-maintained paths through parks and along rivers, quiet country trails, and small roads. The vast majority of the paths, barring mountain passes and remote areas, are car-free. This is one of the many reasons why South Korea should be added to your list of potential cycling destinations!

Here is a guide on the 5 best cycling trails in South Korea coupled with things you should know about the country and top travelling tips.

  • Amazing cycling infrastructure with well-maintained paths
  • Diversity of easy, moderate and hard paths
  • Beautiful trail environments including lakes, mountains, rice paddies, rivers, forests and more
  • Easy to find eateries throughout the country that serve Korean food including rice bowls, dumplings, BBQ, etc.
  • Saunas and camping are easily accessible
  • Very friendly people
  • It might be difficult to find English speakers outside of Seoul
  • Cycling is seasonal as winter months (December to February) can get very harsh

The 5 Best Cycling Routes in South Korea

1. the four rivers trail.

Incheon is the starting point for one of the best cycling trail in Korea

This is one of the best paths in the world with a dedicated cycling highway with multiple lanes and made just for bikes. It is one of the most challenging trails, though, as it runs all the way from the north west corner of South Korea to the south east corner spanning almost 600 km. While cycling the 4-Rivers Paths, a must-see place is the Sangiu Bicycle Museum which is seemingly in the middle of nowhere. This fun and interactive museum covers the history, culture, and technology of the bicycle in its entirety. Most of the museum is in Korean, but exhibits are interactive enough to understand the main points and have a good time!

  • Route You can start your trip from either Incheon or Seoul , and you definitely can’t miss the paths as it literally looks like a biking highway. From Incheon you can follow the path all the way down to the Busan in the south.
  • Path Condition  While most cycling paths are uphill and downhill, the 4-rivers is mostly a flat paved route which will not cause you much difficulty in terms of altitude. The only difficulty comes with the duration of the trip often taking weeks to complete.
  • 4-Rivers Passbook The 4-Rivers Passbook is unique to this cycling trail. The path has red booths along the way so you can get a booklet stamped as you complete your journey. Once you’ve completed it you can send the booklet in and get a medal and certificate of completion.

There are so many great trails in South Korea, but to get the truly best cycling experience, the 4-Rivers trail is a must. Not only the length of the trail but the quality of trails and the amazing scenery you’ll find along the way is just another reason we find this one of the best in the world. While in Seoul, you have got to try these great street foods that will fill your belly but won't hurt your pockets!

2. Han River Trail

Yeouido Park is the starting location of a great cycling trails in Korea

While most times biking trails are found outside of cities in the sprawling countryside, you can’t always get out of the city to enjoy it. That’s why it’s great when cities create biking paths for those who need a quick fix during the work week like the Han River trail.

  • Route The Han River flows right through Seoul and one of the best bike paths in the city is along it. The paths run on both sides of the river almost the entire length of the city. You can start anywhere, but if you didn’t bring your own bike, you can easily rent one in Yeouido Park. This bike path is a great way to get to know the city if it’s your first time. Along the ride there are many things to see including the Seoul Marina, The National Assembly, Yeouido Park (Korean gardens) and the Saetgang Eco Park.
  • Path Condition  This is an easy path that is primarily all flat and paved so it’ll be an easy ride’. Weekends can get quite busy so just remember to be aware of your surroundings while biking. While the length of the paths are only 40km, riding on both sides doubles your ride to 80 km.

Whether you’re local or a tourist looking to get a little exercise while in Seoul, the Han River trail is a perfect way to spend a free day while still seeing all that the city has to offer.

3. Jeju Bike Path

Visiting Jeju Island is a must thing to do in South Korea

While the mainland has many great paths, if you want to experience cycling on a beautiful island full of amazing beaches, then Jeju Island is definitely your cycling dream come true!

  • Route The best starting point is in Jeju city as you can stock up on supplies and get well rested before you start your week-long journey around the island. Most cyclist go around the island counter-clockwise and pass by Hyeopjae beach, Songaksan Mountain, and Jeongbang Waterfall along the way.
  • Path Condition  This path is rated easy as it is primarily flat and there are plenty of places to stop and rest along the way around the island. The path also has many side trips whether that be a beach or waterfall it’s definitely one of the more enjoyable rides in South Korea.

Of course you could always pick one of the trails closer to Seoul, but Jeju cycling trail is a unique pick because you can go from one tourist destination to the next as you circle around this tropical island.

4. East Coast Cycling Route

Sokcho is a base city for a great cycling trail in South Korea

Similar to the 4 Rivers trail, the East Coast Cycling trail is a cross country trip that will take you about 14 days to complete spanning from one end of the country to the other. This is by far one of the coolest trails in South Korea because you never leave the coast. There are times where you have mountains on the right and the ocean on the right and it’s so peaceful the whole ride.

  • Route The official starting point of this path is at the Unification Observatory at the northern tip of South Korea. Many people just start in Sokcho as it’s easier to get there. If you want to collect the official stamps then you’ll need to go to the Unification Observatory. From the Unification Observatory you’ll follow the trail all the way down the eastern coast through every port and city along the way until 720 km later you arrive in Busan. You will travel through both the North and South Gyeongsang provinces.
  • Path Condition  The path is well maintained and paved the whole way. You will pass through many seaside villages with ports that have plenty of fresh seafood and restaurants along the way. While much of the journey is quite flat, there are quite a few mountains that you will need to pass. The paths that are made for cyclists don’t have very steep climbs, but there may be hours spent climbing mountains that may tire you out. This is why we would still consider it a moderate course due to it’s length and mountain passes.

This ultimate cross-country cycling trip is one of the best in the country and is great for those interested to learn more about South Korea’s landscape and rural village life.

5. Chilbongsan Trail

Chilbongsan Trail map

This cycling trail isn’t for the weak hearted. If you are an avid cyclist then this rough cycling trail in South Korea will be a great challenge. The best part about this path is when you hit the peak, you can see the beauty of the South Korean countryside — all the way from Yangju to Seoul. Imagine that!

  • Route This path starts in the Songnaedong area and winds around the mountain to end near Dongducheon. It’s just nearby a few other trails if you want to continue traveling around, but this one is considered the advanced section of the WangBangSan race course. The path is dirt and rocks and winds along the edge of a mountain.
  • Path Condition  The Chilbongsan trail is not for beginners. The trail can be straight up and straight down at some sections which can be very difficult for inexperienced riders. This path is meant to be a challenge and is designed only for those who don’t mind a rough ride.

While this path may not be for everyone, adrenaline junkies will definitely enjoy a day bouncing around the hills of the Chilbongsan trail.

South Korea Cycling Travel Tips

  • Language Barriers : While most Koreans may seem uncomfortable and don’t speak English well, you’ll find many people have electronic translation devices they can use to easily communicate with you. That aside, it always helps to master a couple of phrases, like “hello,” “thank you,” “help,” and of course, “where’s the toilet?”. To get the most out of your South Korean experience, learn the Korean writing system to help you with signs, directions, and even menus. Surprisingly, the Korean writing system is very simple and only takes a few hours to learn. Knowing how to read some important words, like “motel,” or the name of your next destination will give you confidence and make your journey that much smoother.
  • Food : Traditional Korean food is hearty fare and actually quite healthy. Piping hot soup along with rice, kimchi, and other side dishes makes up a meal and is great fuel for cyclists! You can also often find a quick BBQ snack to eat on your routes. If you find yourself craving a taste of home, you can find a variety of Western cuisines in most major cities. Coffee culture has also taken the country by storm, and you can find coffee shops nearly everywhere these days, along with Western-style bakeries offering a surprising-and delicious- variety of traditional baked goods, from sweet to savory.
  • Accommodations/Camping: South Korea’s bike paths are very well maintained and are very safe. Many of the paths wind through farms and fields and throughout the entire way you’ll find free camping areas. You can often camp right along the path, on parks, or on the beaches for free. As most of the paths flow through cities, there are also many hotels along the way. While you can book hotels ahead of time, it is not required as most of the cities along the path always have many vacancies.
  • Saunas : What can be better after a long day of cycling than relaxing and resting your legs in a steaming hot bath? Locally referred to as jimjilbangs are communal spas, saunas, and hot springs all in one, and are found throughout the country. A jimjilbang entry fee usually means 24 hours of use, and it is acceptable and common to stay overnight if you’re in a pinch for a place to stay.
  • Bicycle Shops : While there are many different shops in the country, the ones carrying the parts you may need for repairs can only be found in the larger cities. Make sure to mark some of these on your paths so you are aware of where the next one is. If you’re flying in from Seoul you can stop at Watts Cycling, BB5, and Peulleoswi which are some of the top-rated shops in the city.

Best Time to Go

Spring is the best time to go cycling in South Korea

Late spring (March to May) and early autumn (September to November) have the best climate for bike travel. Winters (December to February) on the Korean Peninsula are bitter cold, and summers (June to August) are incredibly hot and humid, both unfavorable conditions for enjoying the country by bike! If you’re visiting in the spring, you’ll get a chance to see the cherry blossoms bloom, which happens about several weeks later than in Japan . In the fall you can catch the leaves changing.

  • D Dawn Lim Mar 11 2020 REPLY Hi there, I had already done the 4 river in 2017. Now I would like to venture cycling from Seoul to Jeolla. I tried mapping the route but found very few cycling trail all the way. Is it safe to venture this way on the road? These are mostly flat land, correct? Hope you could provide some clue to this, many thanks and I look forward to hearing from you.
  • T Tara Wa Feb 14 2020 REPLY O my god! Korea is MY LOVE!! Thank you for this article! Last spring I challenge myself and finish STB (SEOUL to BUSAN) bike tour. It was organised by local Korean company. I`m not sure if I can right a name of company here^^ Our team was so friendly... with people from many countries... Our guide was so kind and funny! And I decided to go back to Korea and join to new tour that call BLUE ROAD to DMZ. It looked almost like East Coast Cycling Route but with a little difference. Guys, if you have a chance - GO TO KOREA AND CYCLE there with you friend!!!
  • M Maya Kosok Jul 28 2019 Hi Edward - We are also riding through South Korea in August and planning to end in Tokyo in late October! I'd love to hear more about your cycling plans.
  • E Edward Talaga Oct 21 2019 Hi Maya, Unfortunately, due to some obligations, my cycling plan through S. Korea and Japan could not be realized in 2019. I want to do it in the autumn of 2020. The spring months seem to be less interesting there as well as the fact that the snow in the Japanese Alps lies quite long, which could hinder sleeping in a tent. And how are you? October is coming to an end soon so I suppose you are on your dream trip or have already finished it. I would be very happy to hear from you that you have succeeded. I hope you survived the typhoon well. Thanks in advance.
  • M Min Apr 29 2019 There are bike-rental companies in Pohang but unfortunately there is no company that you can leave your bike in Busan.
  • C Chet Khatu Sep 23 2019 Hi, we are coming to do the 4 rivers cycleway and were wondering if any shops are in Seoul to rent the full gear, including panniers? It'd be really helpful to get some advice.
  • S Son Mertens Feb 09 2019 REPLY Thanks for this overview! South Korea is on top of my cycling holiday wish list! One question though: where do you obtain the 4 Rivers Trail Passbook? It would be great to award yourself with a certificate after finishing the most beautiful biketrail in the world! ;-) Thanks for the reply! Warm greetings, Son:)
  • S SpiceRoads Jan 28 2019 Hi Erick, thanks for the comment! The 4 Rivers trail is the most developed of all the paths, with even some road sections towards the end of it. The East Coast route will be busier but more scenic option, rolling through ports, harbours and excellent beach areas. Wind is a factor, being a coastal road, so you will come up against this more than the 4 Rivers Trail inland. This East Coast route was completed in 2016 and runs for 700kms. The road is primarily made up of quiet coastal roads used by cars with dedicated bicycle lanes. There will be significant time on roads but you will be kept away from traffic either on segregated bike lanes, and lanes separated by traffic barriers. Hope this has helped. All the best with your riding journey! :)

Cycling South Korea Part I:The famous Four Rivers Cycling route

korea cycling tour

“You are from America?” the petite, dark haired Korean woman asked Lorenz and me in perfect English as we stood in the central square of Suanbo, gazing in curiosity at the stalls around us—tables set with apple puffs and triangle-shaped, spicy rice-seaweed kimbap; booths with silk paintings and wooden crafts; and in the center, a fountain and stage bustling with dancers dressed in elaborate gold headdresses and purple gowns gathered at the feet.

We nodded, thrilled to speak to someone in our own language after more than a week of struggling with Google Translate, and signs in a strange square boxed script that we could not master.

“I am Suk,” she paused and added in explanation, “I lived in Canada for five years and learned English there. Welcome to our celebration.” She pointed to the festivities around us. “This is our fall festival. To celebrate all the food from the fields—the harvest. Why don’t you join us?”

At the end of our 1650 mile bike and book tour from Seattle to San Diego last fall, Lorenz and I  decided to take a short vacation from our adventures speaking about our book, Breathtaking . And so we did the logical thing: return to Seattle via a bike tour through South Korea. It’s a beautiful country, with stunning mountains, pristine beaches, and a long and ancient history with many colorful and historic buildings.  Best of all, were the friendly, helpful Korean people, who were delighted to share with us their food, traditions and even, by luck, a local harvest fair.

korea cycling tour

We began our journey in the capitol city of Seoul, where we wandered the colorful night markets nibbling on grilled meat skewers and glazed fruit sticks; visited the ornate, colorful, steep roofed palaces of the emperors; and rode the famous aerial tram up Namsan mountain to gaze out over a glittering night cityscape of ultra-modern, high rise buildings. When it finally came time to leave, I clambered onto my heavily loaded touring bike in this bustling megalopolis with much trepidation. Who, in their right mind, would want to pedal over thirty miles out of this sprawling city of over ten million people—the sixteenth largest city in the world?

korea cycling tour

Our special Korean bike map program, Kakao, (Google maps does not work there) had routed us along a canal and then to the Hangang River, right through the heart of the city. I gritted my teeth prepared for hours of slogging through heavy traffic, noise and industry. Was I surprised! Within minutes we were pedaling along a pleasant, wide bike path lined with picnic tables and benches overlooking the river. At the Hangang River, we paused to stop at our first bike stamp station, in a little red English phone booth, and commemorated our official start on the 633 kilometer Seoul to Busan Four Rivers bike route with a round red passport stamp. According to “Korea by Bike” https://www.koreabybike.com/ , an indispensable English language website detailing the eleven official bike routes crisscrossing the country, cyclists who collect all the stamps along a route can send in their bicycle passports to the Korean government and receive a medal for their efforts. We were not trying to win any medals, but finding the passport stamping stations along the route was almost as much fun as the journey itself!

The famous Four Rivers cycling route crosses South Korea’s mountainous peninsula from the northwest corner to its southwest tip, traversing the 1,768 foot Ihwa mountain pass in the middle. Our first few days pedaling along the Han and Nakdeong rivers followed wide, comfortable bike paths with bike bridges, tunnels and even bike rest stops, complete with coffee shops and restaurants catering to the many Korean cyclists biking along with us. Around us, steep green mountains plunged into the broad river valleys lined with large towns of modern high rise apartment buildings spreading along the banks.

By the fourth day, the gradual rise of the route along the river suddenly turned upwards steeply as we headed to the central mountain passes that had repeatedly held off Japanese invaders from the south over the centuries. The bike path turned into lovely quiet side roads wending past exquisite waterfalls, bright red painted pagodas and traditional villages. In Suanbo, as we soaked our feet in the open hot springs, we chanced upon a local harvest festival. A group of women, who were practicing the traditional Korean art of painting flowers, even invited me to join them.

korea cycling tour

Reluctantly, we left the festivities and started the final challenging climb over the pass. Small groups of intrepid Korean cyclists joined us for the famous climb as we slowly wended our way together up along a steep gorge, with overlooks where we could catch our breath and watch the many waterfalls cascading through the lush, thick green, tangled brush and trees, plunging down to the river far below. All of a sudden, the climb was over and we spilled into clusters of laughing, cheering cyclists, posing with their bicycles above their heads, celebrating their achievement. They grinned at us, with our heavily laden bikes, giving us the thumbs up sign and smiles of approval. We smiled back, unable to speak Korean but still able to share the international language of happy cyclists the world round.

korea cycling tour

That night, we camped in a spectacular campsite, overlooking the red and orange tinted mountains in the Mungyeong Saejae Pass provincial park—the crisp cool nights of fall now turning the leaves brilliant colors. Looking out over the valley from our tent, I breathed the tangy Korean salt soup scent, as Lorenz prepared our simple dinner of noodle soup with vegetables on our cookstove, and smiled contentedly. Tomorrow we would visit the Joseon gates, an enormous fortified wall and gate system that protected Seoul from southern invaders, much like the Great Wall of China. And then? We had pedaled over 300 kilometers and crossed the pass. With only week left of our trip, we could finish the rest of the Four Rivers route and end in Busan. But Korea had beautiful islands and a lush coast too. And, I fervently wanted to visit the tombs of the Silla kings in Gyongui, some seventy kilometers off the bike route.

korea cycling tour

The next day, we cycled into the enormous sprawling city of Sangiu, tired and hungry from getting lost and pedaling an accidental ten additional kilometers off route.

“There’s a bus station right around the corner,” I noted to Lorenz as we carried our Korean version of pizza back to our room that night. (No, we had not wanted mayonnaise or hot sauce or eggs on the pizza, we had tried to explain to the Domino’s server using Google Translate).

Lorenz glanced at me as we pedaled past the bus station the next morning. “Do you think we—”

“Should take a bus–” I grinned. “To the coast and beaches and islands?”

An hour later we were staring in wonder out the window of a luxurious bus, whizzing us along Korea’s ultramodern highway system and on to new adventures.

Happiness Promise

There are hundreds of thousands of guides and tour operators around the world. Figuring out who to trust is stressful and hard.

That’s why we started 10Adventures Tours, we’re here to make it easy to find a great guide or tour operator. We handpick the best local guides and tour operators for 10Adventures, working to ensure you have great guides and a great trip.

We know it sucks to show up in a different country and find out the tents are junk, the guide incompetent or the route different from what we thought we were getting.

We want to give our users peace of mind that you’ll have a great trip and offer a guarantee that we will work with you to make it right.

How does this work? Well, if you feel that something about your trip didn’t’ meet your expectations, let us know. We will then work to gather the details and figure out where things went wrong. If something indeed wasn’t as described, or went wrong with your trip, and the problem was within the control of either oursleves, the guide or the tour company, we will then work out a refund with you that’s proportional to the scale of the problem.

Obviously the best way to make a great trip is to tell your local guide or tour operator and give them the chance to fix the solution while you are on your trip. Most things can be solved by telling your guide when the issue develops. If that doesn’t solve it, then email us right away. Please don’t wait to voice your concerns until the trip is over, as it’s much harder to solve issues after the fact.

We work hard to make sure you have a great trip. If something isn’t right, please email  [email protected]  and we will get to work right away.

What to grab all of Korea’s certification stamp in trip? What is the most efficient way to travel to Korea’s certification bike paths back-to-back-to-back?

There’s not one solution. Depending on your travel plans, there are plenty of transportation options. But here’s my suggestion.

Ara Bike Path → Hangang Bike Path

Hangang bike path → saejae bike path.

DP World Tour’s Korea Championship merges with Korean PGA’s similar tournament, moved to October

T he DP World Tour's Asian Swing will continue after the Masters, but it won't resume with the originally scheduled event that was set to take place in South Korea.

The DP World Tour has announced that its Korea Championship will merge with the Korean PGA Tour's Genesis Championship, with the event being played moving forward as the Genesis Championship in October. The tournament will be the closing part of the nine-event Back Nine Swing on the DP World Tour.

With Genesis signing an agreement to become the title sponsor of the combined tournament, the purse will increase to $4 million and a total of 5,000 Race to Dubai points will be on offer.

The new Genesis Championship will be held at Jack Nicklaus Golf Club in Incheon, South Korea, former home to the LPGA's International Crown, and will be played Oct. 24-27. Now the tournament is the last one on the DP World Tour schedule regular season, with the top 110 players on the Race to Dubai rankings at the conclusion of the tournament earning DP World Tour cards for 2025. The top 70 in the standings after the Genesis Championship qualify for the DP World Tour Playoffs.

The tournament will be co-sanctioned with the Korean PGA Tour, with a 120-player field comprising 90 DP World Tour players and 30 KPGA Tour players. The two tours in signed a strategic alliance agreement in May 2023, which sought to expand playing pathways for KPGA Tour players to play on the DP World Tour.

Pablo Larrazábal took home the trophy at the 2023 Korea Championship for his eighth DP World Tour title, while Sanghyun Park was the winner of the 2023 Genesis Championship.

With the merging of the two events, the next tournament on the 2024 DP World Tour schedule is the ISPS Handa Championship in Japan, which will be played April 25-28, two weeks after the Masters Tournament concludes.
