Orkney Islands Tours & Trips

Located just above Scotland 's mainland, the Orkney Islands are a feast for the eye and offer a quiet escape from the hustle and bustle of the mainland. Apart from seal colonies and tall cliffs, scattered all over the islands, one can see plenty of sites dating back to the Neolithic era. Kirkwall is the capital city of the archipelago and also the largest settlement.

Absolutely amazing experience. ? Jim Divine, our tour guide, was extremely knowledgable and informative as well as possessing a dry sense of humour. We were fortunate to be a part of a small tour group travelling from Edinburgh to the Orkney’s. Bed and Breakfast hosts were very welcoming, the bus was modern and comfortable and the history and sights were thought provoking and intriguing. Tour was well planned and presented - Now we are planning our next tour with Rabbies!

I had 2 issues: 1- the tour states that 4nights accomodation were included, however when I got to the last night of accomodation at Lochview Guest House, the manager made me pay £120. She would not provide a receipt since she said that would go to Rabbies Tour group. I will need £120 reimbursement. 2- my emails stated that the operator was “on the go” but my tour operator was actually Rabbies. This made it confusing when I was waiting for the bus initially.

Guide Margerie and Driver Allister excellent. The tour occasionally strenuous; bus rides whole day. Bus quite confortable; Wi-Fi appreciated. Expected more meals included. Big Tour group - 44 Pax - a bit too many for my taste. When I inquired I was told max will be 35.....for me more acceptable. Hotel's fine except Isle of Skye: "Dunollie"- I had a claustrophobic room; no idea where to put my suitcase. After all the add. single room supplement is not little. Itinerary very interesting.

What people love about orkney islands tours.

Seana, faced with having to tell us the Orkney Tour was cancelled while in progress, managed our disappointment, sorted things out for the 2 wishing to leave, and then proceeded to guide us on an incredible 3 day replacement North Coast 500 (538!) tour, backwards :) She was passionate and impressive with her intimate and widespread knowledge and love for every inch of the tour, places, geography, history, tales, music - and magical with it's delivery throughout the tour. Professional yet fun, delightful smiling eyes, expert driver! We thoroughly enjoyed the tour, and would travel with Seana again and again :) Thank you Seana!
Intrepid needs to tighten up this tour. Two free afternoons is too much when one has only three days on the island. Either make the tour two full days or two full days with one full day free to make plans to go to Hoy or Rousay. Give people guidance on what to do on the free day.
It was an amazing tour with the amazing guide. Gail love for Scotland was contagious - she was passionate, told us many tails and stories and even sing few ballads for us! We learned a lot and seen a lot and despite the cold weather - we enjoyed this tour.

“Jean met six of us at Stromness and delivered us safely back to St Margaret’s Hope four days later. She gave us a wonderful three and a half days of touring, was indefatigable, patient and extremely knowledgeable throughout, and showed us sights large and small with grace and friendliness. We all had a wonderful time – Orkney never disappoints but this was the best trip I have been on. Well worth while.”

Full Tour Itinerary

Select Day:

Day 1 - Edinburgh/Glasgow - Aberdeen - Overnight Ferry

From Glasgow and Edinburgh, we travel northwards through the Kingdom of Fife to reach Dundee, which sits overlooking the River Tay. Our journey continues through the fertile farmland of Angus to reach the granite city of Aberdeen by late afternoon.

At Aberdeen Harbour, we join the Northlink ferry for the overnight crossing to Shetland . Once checked-in onboard head to your comfortable twin-berth cabin with en-suite bathroom or enjoy time exploring the ship's many facilities.

We depart Aberdeen at 19:00 hrs, and a short time later, dinner will be served in the ship's restaurant.

The rest of this evening is free to relax and, perhaps, enjoy a wee night-cap in the bar or get some fresh sea air before retiring for the night.

Overnight: MV Hrossey or Hjaltland

Day 2 - Exploring Shetland

We arrive in Lerwick around 07:30 hrs. Breakfast is served onboard from 07:15 hrs after which we board the coach and disembark to begin our island tour.

A short drive to the western side of the Shetland mainland brings us to the old fishing port of Scalloway, which sits overlooking a sheltered bay. This was once the Shetland capital and is the site of Scalloway Castle which was built for the notorious Earl Patrick Stewart in the early 17th Century. We will discover more about this rather unpleasant character and his tyrannical ways during our visit.

Later we travel to the dramatic sea cliffs at Eshaness which have been created by the constant pounding of the Atlantic waves. Look out for the lighthouse , opened in 1929 its powerful light can be seen from 46 km away.

Our journey south takes us through Mavis Grind, an isthmus so narrow it is said to be possible to throw a stone from the North Sea to the Atlantic Ocean. It's a convenient crossing point for otters too, who, in these islands, are sea-dwelling.

Our home for tonight is in the delightful village of Bray which overlooks Busta Voe.

Overnight: Busta House Hotel/Brae Hotel, Shetland (or similar)

Day 3 - Jarlshof - Ferry Crossing - Orkney Islands

After breakfast, we travel to the very south of the mainland to visit Jarlshof , where waves of settlers lived for more than 4,000 years.

At this fascinating site, we will discover the remains of oval houses from the Bronze Age, an Iron Age broch and Viking longhouses. Later, in medieval times, farmsteads were also built here. Finally, a laird's house was constructed on the site in the 1600s. The breadth of history to be discovered here is without parallel in Scotland and is sure to amaze you.

Later we make the short drive to Sumburgh Head, where the waters of the North Sea meet the waves of the Atlantic Ocean. Standing guard to warn the passing ships is the Sumburgh Lighthouse, designed by the grandfather of the famous author Robert Louis Stevenson .

During our time here will visit the RSPB reserve which is home to many species of seabirds including puffins, guillemots and razorbills.

This afternoon we tour through the island, and as we make our journey hopefully, we will see some native Shetland ponies grazing in their fields.

Our destination is Lerwick, the island's attractive capital. Here we will have some free time to explore this charming town with its stone-paved alleys, granite houses and independent shops. The innovative Shetland Museum and Archives tells the fascinating story of these islands and is well worth visiting.

Later this afternoon we travel to the port to join the ferry bound for the Orkney Islands . Dinner will be served on board and we will arrive in Kirkwall around 23:00 hrs. It's a short drive to our hotel for the next three nights.

Overnight: Kirkwall Hotel/Lynnfield Hotel, Kirkwall (or similar) (3 nights)

Day 4 - Discovering prehistoric Orkney

Today we explore the heart of Neolithic Orkney. These treasures are of such importance that UNESCO has designated them a World Heritage site . Our first visits are to the Ring of Brodgar and the Standing Stones of Stenness. These mysterious stone circles are amongst the most significant in Europe and are some 5,000 years old.

Next, we make for Maeshowe , a magnificent chambered tomb that dates from around 2,500 BC. It was raided by Norsemen in the 12th Century. They left carvings behind which are considered to be some of the finest examples of runic inscriptions in the World.

Our last visit of the day is to Skara Brae . This amazingly well-preserved village was built 5,000 years ago. Overlooking Skaill Bay, we'll discover a settlement of Stone Age houses complete with chairs, beds and dressers all made from stone. Discover more at the visitor centre which provides touch-screen presentations and a wide range of artefacts that have excavated from the site.

Later return to Kirkwall where dinner is served in our hotel.

Day 5 - Scapa Flow and Italian Chapel Excursion

Enjoy free time in Kirkwall this morning. You could visit the mighty Cathedral of St Mangus , which was begun in 1137. It took 300 years to complete and is one of the finest examples of Norman architecture in Europe. Nearby sits the Bishop's Palace and Earl's Palace , which was reputedly built using forced labour.

If you fancy some retail therapy, Kirkwall has a wealth of independent shops and craftworkers studios to be explored.

Orkney played a vital role during both World Wars, and this afternoon we will travel to see Scapa Flow which provided a sheltered anchorage for the British naval fleet. This expanse of water has played witness to some monumental events. In 1919 the German Navy scuttled itself as a grand act of defiance and, in 1939, HMS Royal Oak was sunk here by a U-boat.

To prevent further attacks, a series of four barriers were constructed using Italian prisoners of war. Known as the Churchill Barriers, we will use these causeways to reach the little island of Lamb Holm.

The Italian Prisoners constructed a chapel out of a pair of Nissen Huts. We'll make a visit to view the remarkable paintings that can be found inside the simple corrugated metal exterior. Several of the prisoners have returned to Orkney over the years to assist with the restoration of the building.

Day 6 - Orkney - Cairngorms National Park - Edinburgh/Glasgow

Today we bid farewell to island life and make the journey to St Margaret's Hope where the fast Pentland Ferries catamaran waits to transport us across the Pentland Firth. During the hour-long sailing look out for porpoises, dolphins and minke whales that can often be seen.

On arrival at Gills Bay, we join the famous North Coast 500 route as we make the coastal drive southwards across the Dornoch and Cromarty Firths towards Inverness.

The beautiful Cairngorms National Park will bring us to the Pass of Drumocher and Highland Perthshire beyond. There will be a stop where can enjoy time off the coach and buy refreshments.

The last part of the journey takes us through the Kingdom of Fife and across the Forth Estuary into Edinburgh. The coach will continue on to Glasgow, for passengers wishing to end their tour there.

Customer reviews overall rating:.

No hesitation in recommending this tour. Was our first coach tour so was a bit unsure of what to expect but it was great. Nice to have everything planned and organised. Great hotels (including a 500 year old one!) Considering the high standard of accomodation and meals it was good value and a stress free way to visit Shetland and Orkney.

A comprehensive, informative and interesting tour of both islands. A good balance of archeological sites and the natural geography and features of both islands. Excellent accommodation on Shetland.

Thoroughly recommend this tour if you are interested in visiting Shetland and Orkney

Scotland: Highlights of Orkney and Shetland

Scotland: Highlights of Orkney and Shetland

Sail away to lands steeped in history, wildlife and stunning scenery, far from the jostling crowds to the haunting beauty of the Orkney and Shetland Isles. Many people have landed there before you - some as early as 3000 BC. Most famous of all were the Vikings, but they were not alone and all around you will find historical treasures. Both islands, but particularly Shetland, in summer have virtually no darkness and the beauty of this ‘Simmer Dim’, as it is called locally, has to be seen to be realised. Both Orkney and Shetland have their own identity, Orkney being very green and fertile while Shetland has a more rugged cliff and sea loch scenery. Both however share a colourful history of Picts, Norsemen, ancient antiquities, buried treasure and seafaring legends, bound up with an independent spirit that makes them quite different from the rest of Scotland.

We sail with Serco Northlink Ferries and their modern, purpose-built vessels, from Aberdeen overnight to Lerwick. We then have two full days to tour Shetland. After rejoining the ship for an evening sailing to Kirkwall, we have a further two full days touring Orkney, before our short crossing back to the mainland.

Upgrade to an outside cabin (supplement £55pp) and enjoy sea views from the comfort of your cabin.

NC500:  Please note that this itinerary features part of the  North Coast 500 , the highly scenic coastal route around the north of Scotland which begins and ends in Inverness.

Onwards through Scotland's most northerly mainland village, John o' Groats*, and then to Gills Bay, where you board the ferry, and cross the Pentland Firth into the Orkney Archipelago.

It’s a short drive to the famous Italian Chapel where you stop for a visit before continuing to the Viking stronghold of Kirkwall, Capital of Orkney. Here you can visit Kirkwall's magnificent Viking Cathedral and enjoy its historic winding streets in the evening.

*Ferry timetables vary depending on the season. Due to this, a visit to John o'Groats may not be possible.

  • Go to an ancient site that is older than the pyramids, Skara Brae
  • See the wild ocean clash with redstone cliffs

Today is your chance to explore this archipelago’s fertile green pastures, fringed by shores of golden sands and washed by waters of the North Sea and the Atlantic Ocean.

You visit the 5,000-year-old village of Skara Brae, the mystical prehistoric stone circle at Brodgar, and the Druidic standing stones of Stenness.

You then travel onto Maeshowe, where in the 12th century the Vikings left one of the largest collections of Norse runic inscriptions.

Then it’s back to Kirkwall for your second night after what is sure to be a memorable day.

  • Stroll around the beautiful harbour town of Ullapool
  • Take a look at the stunningly located ruins of Ardvreck Castle

After a relaxed start*, you leave Orkney and sail the Viking waters back to the mainland. From here, you travel the old road right across the very top of Scotland, driving past the stunning Ben Loyal and Ben Hope mountains, following the rocky cliffs and stunning golden sand beaches.

You then visit the far northwest Highlands and the wilderness of the mountains of Assynt before stopping to view the 15th-century ruins of Ardvreck Castle.

From here, you travel to Ullapool, situated at the mouth of Loch Broom, a beautiful whitewashed fishing village where you spend your last night's stay on tour.

*Ferry timetables vary depending on the season. Due to this, passengers may have less time in Kirkwall in the morning as the ferry departs earlier.

  • See the ancient standing stones made famous by Outlander, Clava Cairns
  • Learn about one of the most brutal events in British history at Culloden

Leaving Ullapool behind, you take in the drama of the River Droma as it plunges 60m down into Corrieshalloch Gorge. You then admire the beautiful Loch Glascarnoch, on the way past the 'Capital of the Highlands', Inverness.

You can visit Culloden Moor, the site of The Battle of Culloden in 1746, one of the bloodiest events in our history and the last battle to have been fought on the British mainland. Next, you take a short drive to the ancient standing stones at Clava Cairns, made famous by Diana Gabaldon in the ‘Outlander’ books.

From here, you travel through the ancient Caledonian Pine Forest, hugging the Cairngorm mountain range. You enjoy lunch in these beautiful surroundings before travelling through The Big Tree country of Perthshire, the Kingdom of Fife, and back to Edinburgh.

Accommodation

Where does this tour stay overnight.

You stay one night in Inverness, then two nights in Kirkwall on Orkney, and the final night in Ullapool*.

* Please be aware that Ullapool is busy all year round and Kirkwall is busy between June and August . You may need to be flexible with rooms we're able to reserve for you here. If you'd prefer to find your own accommodation for this location, please choose the 'book your own accommodation' option when you book your tour.

How can I book accommodation?

Accommodation is not included in the price of your tour. To book accommodation, there are two options: either Rabbie’s Tours can book it for you, or you can book your own. For information on how to do this, please see the ‘Accommodation’ tab on FAQ page HERE .

Alternatively, please email us your questions at [email protected] or call us on +44(0)131 226 3133.

Information you can find on the FAQ page, under the ‘Accommodation’ tab : types of accommodation, room types, the booking process, getting to and from your accommodation, and cancellation terms.

How much will the accommodation cost?

We book accommodation with third-party providers on your behalf and each property sets their own rates. Rates vary considerably depending on the accommodation standard, facilities, location, and local demand. We therefore can’t tell you exactly how much your accommodation will cost until your request has been allocated to a specific property.

As a guide, you can expect to pay the following prices,  per person per night :

NOTE: Prices quoted are for guidance only and may be higher on some occasions, especially for last-minute bookings and when demand is high (E.g. peak season, weekends, holidays, special events etc)

Breakfast will be included unless otherwise noted. The type of breakfast provided will vary from place to place so you may receive either a full cooked breakfast, a continental style breakfast (E.g., toast, fruit, cereal), or a packed breakfast bag or tray (E.g., porridge pot, fruit, granola bar).

Do you offer hotel pickups in the departure cities?

The UK and Ireland's historic city centres are full of narrow streets and winding roads. So, to speed up your departure, we only pick up from our central meeting points. What's more is leaving the city using the most direct route also reduces the carbon footprint of our tours.

Is there parking close to the departure point?

We don't recommend bringing your car into the centre of our departure cities. It can be hard to find parking, and there are excellent public transportation services.

When should I get to the departure point?

Arrive 15 minutes before your departure time. Due to waiting restrictions, we can't wait for you if you're late.

What happens if I'm late or miss the tour?

If you're late for your tour, our cancellation policy applies. 100% charges are applicable, and you will not be entitled to a refund or alternative.

What are your cancellation policies?

For one-day tours: You'll receive a full refund if you cancel 24 hours or more before the tour departure

For tours of between two and nine days: You'll receive a 90% refund if you cancel 15 or more days before the tour departure

For tours of 10 or more days: You'll receive a 90% refund if you cancel 21 or more days before the tour departure

For all European packaged tours: You'll receive a 90% refund if you cancel 42 days before the tour departure.

If you cancel inside these notice periods, full charges will apply and no refunds will be issued.

To cancel your booking, email [email protected] as soon as possible. The effective date of cancellation will be the date we receive written confirmation from you.

Can Itineraries change?

Your tour will always follow the itinerary as closely as possible. Your driver-guide will keep you up to date on the road, and we'll try to get in touch about any large changes prior to your departure.

Can I pre-book a specific seat?

Due to logistical reasons, we're unable to let you pre-book a seat on the bus. But our comfortable 16-seat mini-coaches have huge windows. So, you'll always get a good view.

Are there toilets on the bus?

Unfortunately, we have no on-board toilet facilities, but you'll have regular comfort breaks.

How do you cater for people with accessibility needs?

We aim to accommodate everyone. To read more information on how we do this, click here to go to our accessibility guide.

Do you take children on your tours?

We regret we don't carry children under the age of five on our scheduled tours.

You can ask us about the tours we recommend for younger children. And if your child is less than 1.35m tall, you should let us know, so we can provide them with a suitable booster seat.

How much time do I get off the bus?

We want you to enjoy Britain and Ireland. And we believe the best way to do this is to get you off the mini-coach and out exploring. So, we give you plenty of time to take photos, go walking, and explore ancient ruins.

Why do you exclude visitor attractions?

We exclude visitor attractions in your tour price because it lets you travel your way. It means you can pamper yourself with a luxury lunch or skip an attraction whenever you feel like it.

Do we need to bring our own lunch?

You don't need to. We stop in small towns, villages, and rural eateries where you can choose whatever meal pleases both your taste buds and your budget.

Should I tip the driver-guide?

Let's be honest, our driver-guides would never refuse a cheeky bonus. But it's up to you, and the amount is entirely at your discretion.

What about travel insurance?

We advise you take out travel insurance.

What is ABTOT?

You're protected by ABTOT when you chose to let us reserve your accommodation on a multi-day tour. This means you can claim back anything you've paid us if we become bankrupt. Read our terms and conditions for more information.

I have more questions, who can help me?

If you have any more questions, call us on +44(0)131 226 3133, email [email protected] , or check out our full FAQs .

Scotland is calling. This is your chance to experience northern Scotland and the enchanting Orkney’s with carefully planned scenic routes to some of the country’s most beautiful and historical destinations. Scotland’s high latitude means lovely long summer days, and often an extended twilight, with the north experiencing up to four hours more daylight at midsummer than London! These relaxing evenings will ensure you get the most out of your Scottish tour, soaking up the summer sunsets. Explore Neolithic Scotland at Skara Brae, marvel at Britain’s largest mountain range in the Cairngorms, enjoy mesmerising loch views and much more during a once-in-a-lifetime adventure to The Highlands.

You're due to be in the capable hands of Carl for this tour, he looks forward to welcoming you on board.

We'd be delighted to request more rooms from the hotel for this popular tour, please send through your booking request and we'll check availability.

Tour code: B3409

Begin our journey north, pausing overnight in the ‘Fair City of Perth’ at The Royal George Hotel.

Drive through the stunning Cairngorm National Park, Britain’s largest mountain range, en route to Inverness. Spend lunchtime at leisure in this Highland city before continuing to the Castletown Hotel near Thurso – your home for two nights.

Take the morning ferry to Orkney and meet your local guide who’ll be with us for the day. Start at the Italian Chapel, ‘the miracle of camp 60’, built by Italian prisoners in WWII. Then, pass the Churchill Barriers (a construction ordered by Churchill after the tragic torpedoing of battleship Royal Oak in 1939) as we head to Kirkwall to stretch your legs in Orkney’s largest town. This afternoon, view the standing stones at the Ring of Brodgar – a mystical site, reminiscent of Stonehenge and dating back to around 2500BC. Go even further back in time as we visit the ancient Neolithic settlement at Skara Brae - the amazingly preserved rooms were only uncovered during a storm in 1850! Finish your tour of Orkney at Skaill House, the finest mansion on the island, dating back to 1620 and overlooking the spectacular Bay of Skaill.

Travel west on Scotland’s answer to Route 66, a spectacular road that hugs the north coast with breathtaking views at every turn. Pause at Durness, where we’ve arranged lunch at the family-run Smoo Cave Hotel, before heading south on scenic single-track roads to Ullapool. Here, check in at The Royal Hotel, your home for the next two nights.

Spend your day at leisure in the picturesque fishing village of Ullapool, nestled on the shores of Loch Broom and surrounded by natural beauty. You may choose to visit Ullapool Museum or hop on a boat trip around the nearby Summer Isles.

Enjoy more spectacular scenery, as we head west towards Inverness, passing the in(famous) Loch Ness. Our route along The Great Glen will take us past the Commando Memorial at Spean Bridge and through the dramatic Pass of Glencoe, across rugged Rannoch Moor and via the Trossachs National Park to spend our final night at Stirling’s Highland Hotel.

Homeward bound through Scottish Borders scenery and the lovely Northumbrian countryside.
