The Worst Times to Visit Thailand

Avoiding the hot season if possible.

Thailand's hot season, from April to June, brings soaring temperatures and intense humidity, peaking in April and May at over 40°C (104°F). If you're not a fan of the heat, be sure to avoid those months.

Tips for Travelling during the Hot Season:

  • Explore northern regions like Chiang Mai, where the climate is generally cooler compared to the southern parts of the country.
  • Engage in water-based activities to cool off, such as visiting coastal areas or islands.

Avoiding the Rainy Season If Possible

While the rainy season (July to October) graces Thailand with lush landscapes, it also brings short afternoon showers and potential disruptions due to monsoons and storms.

However, you can revel in the perks of serene locales with fewer crowds and attractive prices.

Tips for Travelling the Rainy Season:

  • Explore eastern and northern regions during the rainy season, as they typically receive less rainfall compared to the southern areas.
  • Keep an eye on weather forecasts and plan indoor activities on days when rain is expected.
  • Consider the sun-kissed beauty of Bali as a radiant alternative when Thailand is drenched in rain.

Thailand Weather in January: Nice Weather

  • Northern Thailand (Chiang Mai): 15–25°C (59–77°F)
  • Central Thailand (Bangkok): 25–32°C (77–89°F)
  • Southern Thailand (Phuket): 26–32°C (79–89°F)

January offers great weather conditions, whether for city sightseeing or beach holidays.

It is a popular tourist season in Thailand, especially in tourist hotspots, such as Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Phuket, and Koh Samui. Expect larger crowds at popular attractions and book accommodations in advance.

Events and Festivals

The key festival, when it is in January, Chinese New Year, is celebrated right across the country, especially in Bangkok's Chinatown.

Suggested read: Thailand in January: the top 5 places to visit, costs, and crowds .

Thailand Weather in February: Nice Weather

Similar to the weather of January, February's weather is still nice, warm, and dry.

Good weather means almost anywhere is a good place to plan your holiday.

Beautiful islands and beaches are also good places to go — Phuket, Krabi, Khao Lak... All kinds of water activities enjoy ideal conditions.

Thailand Weather in March: The Heat Builds

  • Northern Thailand (Chiang Mai): 20–30°C (68–86°F)
  • Central Thailand (Bangkok): 28–35°C (82–95°F)
  • Southern Thailand (Phuket): 28–34°C (82–93°F)

March is still a fabulous month to visit Thailand, especially in the first half of the month, though it starts to heat up in March. It's advisable to stay hydrated, especially in the central region with warmer temperatures.

During this season, you can go literally anywhere in Thailand thanks to the low rainfall. Water-related activities in the southern islands are enjoyable.

Suggested read: Thailand in March: top places to visit, costs, and crowds .

Thailand Weather in April: Hottest

  • Northern Thailand (Chiang Mai): 25–35°C (77–95°F)
  • Central Thailand (Bangkok): 29–35°C (86–97°F)
  • Southern Thailand (Phuket): 29–35°C (84–95°F)

April is the hottest month in Thailand. It is not unusual for temperatures to exceed 30°C (95°F) all day and night!

The heat in Chiang Mai during April gets even more oppressive than in Bangkok. Chiang Rai is slightly cooler by 1 or 2°C but is still hot nonetheless.

For beach lovers, you are almost guaranteed some blue skies and clear seas. Staying in a beach resort will be at least 4 or 5°C cooler than in Bangkok or Chiang Mai.

Festivals and Events

Thai New Year (Songkran Festival) is the biggest, longest, and most enjoyable festival in Thailand. It is a 3-day-long water fight that takes place throughout the country!

Suggested read: Thailand in April: top places to visit, costs, and crowds .

Thailand Weather in May: The Rains Start

  • Central Thailand (Bangkok): 31–36°C (88–97°F)

May is still hot and starts to be wet with it, as Thailand begins its rainy season. The rainy season is in full swing by the end of the month.

The weather in Bangkok and other cities in May starts to get extremely humid. Koh Samui is better than Phuket and Krabi to go because rainfall during May is much lower on the Gulf of Thailand than on the Andaman Coast.

May sees the end of the high season, which means that prices on hotels and flights begin to drop, bringing great value for visitors.

Suggested read: Thailand in May: top places to visit, costs, and crowds .

Thailand Weather in June: Wet and Hot

  • Northern Thailand (Chiang Mai): 28–38°C (82–100°F)
  • Central Thailand (Bangkok): 29–35°C (84–95°F)
  • Southern Thailand (Phuket): 27–33°C (81–91°F)

Thailand can expect an average of 15 to 22 days of rain in June. However, the rain is usually short-lived, occurring in short bursts in the afternoon or evening.

This tourism low season is the best time to travel to Thailand for prices and quietness, with more choices of accommodation and various different promotions.

For beachgoers, Ko Samui and Hua Hin are the best destinations as they are not so affected by the rains at this time.

Suggested read: Thailand in June: top places to visit, costs, and crowds .

Thailand Weather in July: Wet

  • Northern Thailand (Chiang Mai): 28–36°C (82–97°F)
  • Central Thailand (Bangkok): 28–34°C (82–93°F)
  • Southern Thailand (Phuket): 27–32°C (81–89°F)

July experiences heavy rainfall, so be prepared for wet conditions.

The southern islands are affected by the monsoon in July, which brings heavy rains and turbulent waves to the west coast.

However, the east coast (Koh Samui, Koh Tao, etc) experiences fewer showers during this season and has relatively good weather in July. You can still enjoy sunny days at the beach on these islands.

Some urban areas, such as Bangkok, remain hot and wet. Staying refreshed with indoor swimming pool visits and cold showers will help relieve any discomfort.

Suggested read: Thailand in July: top places to visit, costs, and crowds .

Thailand Weather in August: Wet

  • Northern Thailand (Chiang Mai): 27–35°C (81–95°F)
  • Central Thailand (Bangkok): 27–33°C (81–91°F)

Like July, August is one of the best times to visit Koh Samui and the surrounding islands. Though there are some brief rains, it is much better than the other side of the peninsula in Phuket, Krabi, Koh Chang, and the Phi Phi Islands.

A trip to Thailand in August can be a cost-effective opportunity to enjoy scenic spots and quiet beaches without the crowds.

Suggested read: Thailand in August: top places to visit, costs, and crowds .

Thailand Weather in September: Wettest

  • Northern Thailand (Chiang Mai): 25–32°C (77–89°F)
  • Central Thailand (Bangkok): 26–32°C (79–89°F)
  • Southern Thailand (Phuket): 26–31°C (79–88°F)

September is the wettest month in Thailand. But actually, only some rural areas are significantly affected by the rains during the wet season, such as the mountainous north around Chiang Mai.

Destinations like Bangkok offer travelers plenty to do and see, even when it's raining outside. Koh Samui is recommended for beach holidays in September as it is less affected by the rains.

Rains do not disrupt the travel experience too much for some, as it seldom rains all day long.

Suggested read: Thailand in September: top places to visit, costs, and crowds .

Thailand Weather in October: End of the Rains

  • Northern Thailand (Chiang Mai): 22–30°C (72–86°F)
  • Central Thailand (Bangkok): 24–31°C (75–88°F)
  • Southern Thailand (Phuket): 25–30°C (77–86°F)

Thailand experiences high or very high rainfall again in October, except in Northern Thailand where the rainy season already tails off to moderate levels.

The monsoon rain eases off with less rainfall and lower temperatures by the end of October in most of Thailand. However, Koh Samui begins its peak rainy season at this time.

Some visitors come to Thailand at the end of October to wait for the annual grand Thailand Lantern Festival in early November. Bangkok and Chiang Mai are the main venues.

Suggested read: Thailand in October: top places to visit, costs, and crowds .

Thailand Weather in November: Peak Season Starts

  • Northern Thailand (Chiang Mai): 18–28°C (64–82°F)
  • Central Thailand (Bangkok): 23–30°C (73–86°F)
  • Southern Thailand (Phuket): 24–30°C (75–86°F)

Thailand's peak travel season starts from November. The rains and heat are gone or going from most of the country.

You can venture out without any worries of getting drenched, EXCEPT on the east coast, which receives a massive half a meter of rain in November.

Islands on the Andaman Coast (Phuket, Krabi, Phi Phi Island, Similan Islands, etc.) are ideal places to go, by contrast, with only moderate rainfall.

Bangkok and Chiang Mai, with low rainfall, are the most popular cities in November for the Thailand Lantern Festivals .

Suggested read: Thailand in November: top places to visit, costs, and crowds .

Thailand Weather in December: Coolest

  • Central Thailand (Bangkok): 22–31°C (72–88°F)
  • Southern Thailand (Phuket): 23–39°C (73–84°F)

December is the coolest month in Thailand, but it's still warm everywhere but in the cool/mild mountainous north.

December is a great time to visit most areas in Thailand (Koh Samui is still in rainy season though) and is also the country's busiest month for tourism.

There are celebrations on Christmas and New Year's Eve in Thailand. Shopping malls in Thailand have big sales from late December to early January. If you're planning a trip to Thailand over the Christmas and New Year period, try to book as early as possible. Popular hotels are usually booked up 3-6 months in advance.

Thailand Travel ADVICE

Thailand news, tips & advice

Visiting Thailand in June

The welcome arrival of the summer rains marks the start of the green season months in Thailand. The rains usually arrive in earnest in May, but it is in June when the Thai countryside starts to transform and takes on a noticeably greener hue. June is an ideal month for nature lovers to explore the rural areas of north and north-east Thailand. It’s also a wonderful time to sample an array of fresh tropical fruits with a number of varieties at their best in June as fruit lovers dive into durian , lunch on longans and go mad for mangosteen. Visiting Thailand in June during the tourist low season also brings advantages with many popular attractions less crowded and hotels offering discounts to fill their rooms. It’s also worth checking domestic airlines for green season deals with big savings often available on selected routes.

Thailand weather in June

If you spend a week or more in Thailand during June you can expect to see some rain, but in most areas you should also experience extended periods of sunshine and high temperatures during your stay. Although May signals the start of the rainy season in Thailand, June is statistically a drier month and can be an excellent time to visit. The weather is variable, but the heavier and more persistent rain tends to arrive later in the rainy season. Always be prepared for a change in the weather during June and even on cloudy days never underestimate the power of the sun’s UV rays. Blue skies and bright sunshine in the morning can be followed by afternoon thunder storms (and vice versa) so take that into consideration when deciding what to wear or making travel plans.

Localised flash flooding can take place just about anywhere during a downpour in the rainy season. With storm drains struggling to cope with the tropical deluge, some streets temporarily turn into streams. Traffic in Bangkok can get even worse than usual during a downpour so add extra time if you are travelling to the airport or making transport connections. The flash flooding and downpours are all part of the Thailand experience and out of your control. Try to do what most of the locals do when the heavens open; take it in your stride, stay ‘ jai yen ‘ and patiently wait it out under shelter.

Which is the best Thai island or beach resort to visit in June?

There are distinct regional variations to the weather in Thailand in June. For the best prospects for a beach break with extended sunshine and a lower chance of rain, head to the Gulf of Thailand. That doesn’t mean you should totally dismiss the Andaman Coast although this side of Thailand does see higher average rainfall levels in June. Wherever you choose to stay, there are no guarantees with the weather so be prepared for variable conditions.

Southern Thailand Gulf Coast The Gulf Coast of Thailand sees less rain in June compared to the Andaman Coast. If you’re looking for the best island to stay, the trio of Gulf islands; Ko Samui , Ko Pha Ngan and Ko Tao are good choices for a June beach break. If you prefer to stay on the mainland, the beaches of Hua Hin, Cha Am , Prachuap Khiri Khan, Pranburi, Chumphon and Khanom provide inviting options.

Southern Thailand Andaman Coast The effects of the south-west monsoon mean that the Andaman Coast of Thailand sees higher levels of rainfall during June compared to the Gulf of Thailand. That doesn’t necessarily mean you are going to see rain every day. In fact, the heaviest and more persistent rains on the Andaman Coast tend to arrive at the very start of the rainy season (in May) and towards the end (September/October). You can still expect to see plenty of sunshine and warm temperatures in June, but if you want a two-week break where you do nothing more than sit on the beach all day you will need to lower your expectations. Staying on Phuket or in Krabi does you give you more options for things to do away from the beach on rainy mornings or afternoons. The smaller Thai islands in the Andaman, such as the Trang islands , can still be beautiful in June, but they are more exposed and there is less to do away from the beach and pool areas when it rains. Storms and big waves in the Andaman Sea can also see the suspension of boat services to smaller islands and some bungalow operations choose to close down from May to October or operate with reduced staffing.

Eastern Seaboard As a rough rule of thumb, the further east you go along Thailand’s eastern seaboard, then the more rain you are likely to see. Trat province, which includes the islands of the Ko Chang archipelago, sees particularly high levels of rainfall during June. However, at the opposite end of the eastern seaboard, Pattaya and Ko Samet experience more favourable conditions and are certainly worth considering if you’re looking for a beach break close to Bangkok.

June events and festivals in Thailand

The important Buddhist holiday of Visakha Bucha usually falls in May, but does occasionally take place in June. The exact date varies from year to year because it is determined by the lunar calendar.

The annual Phi Ta Khon Ghost Festival in Loei, north-east Thailand often takes place around June time although the exact date varies from year to year. By way of complete contrast, head south to the resort city of Hua Hin and enjoy smooth sounds by the beach at the Hua Hin Jazz Festival.

The eastern provinces of Thailand , including Rayong, Chanthaburi and Trat, are sometimes referred to as the ‘orchard of Thailand’. The agricultural heritage of the region is celebrated with a number of local fruit festivals in May and June. And staying with Rayong, the life and work of Thailand’s most famous poet is celebrated with Sunthorn Phu Day on June 26.

With the arrival of June in Thailand, the entire country experiences a notable climate change. However, humidity remains high, making coastal regions particularly attractive for their more bearable weather conditions.

Thailand Weather by Regions

Thailand weather in June

Thailand weather in June

  • Bangkok and central Thailand: The capital, Bangkok , experiences average temperatures between 31°C and 35°C, which is a notable relief from the intense 40° C of the previous month. Occasional peaks around 36-37°C are still possible. Rain should be expected for about half of the month.
  • Northern Thailand: The north, including areas like Chiang Mai , receives slightly less rain, with average temperatures between 30°C and 35°C. The reduced rainfall allows nature to flourish, making this region ideal for river activities and lush landscapes. However, hikers should prepare for sudden downpours and keep waterproof clothing on hand.
  • Southern Thailand and coastal areas: On the southeast coast, destinations like Koh Samui experience different weather conditions than Phuket and Koh Lanta on the Andaman Sea coast. Koh Lanta has less rainfall than Phuket , which can expect almost a fortnight of rain in June. The average temperature on the coast is around 29°C. The Andaman Sea tends to be rougher during this time, leading to reduced hotel operations and irregular or interrupted shipping.

In conclusion, Thailand in June, with its temperate climate and revived natural beauty, offers a unique blend of experiences for all types of travelers. Whether you’re looking for a quiet beach getaway or an adventurous exploration of lush landscapes, this month offers a wide range of opportunities to enjoy Thailand’s diversity.

Traveling to Thailand in June: More Affordable & Less Crowded

Discovering Thailand in June offers a considerable advantage in terms of crowds and costs, thanks to the arrival of the rainy season. This time of year is characterized by quieter tourist spots and more affordable travel options.

June hotel prices in Thailand often drop to almost half of what they are during the peak months of January and February, as many properties offer off-season rates. If the cost of food and drinks remains relatively stable, you will likely receive attractive discounts on various excursions and activities.

Reduced visitor numbers also mean smaller groups for excursions, allowing for a more intimate and personalized experience. Thailand’s famous beaches and tourist attractions are less crowded, making for a more relaxed and enjoyable visit.

Another benefit of traveling to Thailand in June is the ease of planning. Fewer tourist crowds mean you don’t need to book your accommodation and activities too far in advance, giving you more flexibility in your travel plan. All of these factors combined make June an ideal time for those looking for a more economical and leisurely Thai adventure.

Places to Visit in Bad Weather Conditions

In June, some areas of Thailand, especially the northern border areas and central coastal areas, experienced harsh weather conditions. This period is marked by unpredictable and frequent precipitation, which can disrupt many outdoor tourist activities.

If you plan to travel to these areas during this time, it is recommended that you indulge in indoor activities, such as visiting museums or attending spas. Nevertheless, we have put together a list of destination-specific activities that are well-suited to this rainy season, which you will find below:

The White Temple, Chiang Rai

The White Temple, Chiang Rai

  • Discover the White Temple (Wat Rong Khun) because, beyond its breathtaking exterior, it conceals a multitude of artistic treasures waiting to be explored inside its walls.
  • Visit the Baan Dam Museum, also known as the “Black House,” which features a fusion of traditional and contemporary artwork.
  • Immerse yourself in the serene surroundings of tea plantations such as Choui Fong, where you can delve into the art of tea production and enjoy indoor tastings.
  • Take in a cabaret show, like Tiffany’s Show or the Alcazar, which are famous for their vibrant performances.
  • Visit the underwater world at Pattaya Underwater World, where you can stay dry while observing marine life.

Places to Visit in Extreme Weather Conditions

When visiting destinations like Chanthaburi, Koh Chang, and Phetchabun, which are known for harsh weather conditions during June in Thailand, it is essential to design an itinerary that takes into account the erratic and sometimes severe weather.

While it is true that indoor attractions such as museums and your accommodation facilities remain viable options, it is generally advisable to consider other destinations where the weather conditions are more favorable. However, if you find yourself in these locations during stormy days, it is important to be aware of some activities to avoid for your safety and enjoyment:

Activities to avoid:

  • Outdoor water activities, such as snorkeling, scuba diving, or visiting waterfalls, should be undertaken with caution due to increased precipitation and potentially strong currents.
  • Trekking and hiking in jungles or mountains can be risky due to slippery paths and reduced visibility.

Best Time to Visit Thailand | Two Wandering Soles

Located smack dab in the center of the mainland Southeast Asia, Thailand makes an excellent destination throughout most of the year.

However, in order to avoid monsoon rains and smoke season, you’ll want to be sure to do a little research and planning before packing your bags so you are sure to visit the right places at the  right time .

That’s why we’re here!

With such a diverse landscape throughout the country – from the mountains in the north to the islands in the south – the climate in Thailand varies widely from region to region.

Plus, the seasons are not as straight forward as in other places in the world. Instead of winter, spring, summer and autumn, the Thai seasons are best described as “cool”, “hot” and “rainy”.

In this article, we’re going over the seasons of each region to help you determine the best time to visit Thailand for what you’d like to see and do on your trip.

When is the best time to visit Thailand?

In general, you’ll find the most comfortable temperatures across the country, with little chance of rain, from November – February.

Maya Bay Thailand

Now, let’s break it down by region…

Bangkok and Chiang Mai

Bangkok and Chiang Mai have the best weather from  November – February . Outside of these months, you can expect heavy rains and extreme heat, with lots of smoke in the north of the country.

Andaman Sea

If you plan to visit the Thai islands, the best time to visit the Andaman Sea (Thailand’s southwest coast) is  November – April . Monsoon season is May – September in this region, so you will likely want to avoid it during this time.

Thailand’s Gulf

Thailand’s Gulf Coast will have its best weather from  December – March , but the summer months ( July – September ) are also a decent time to visit and the crowds tend to be fewer. Monsoon season in the Gulf is much shorter than the Andaman Sea, generally lasting from October through the end of November.

We’ve visited Thailand in all seasons

Chiang Mai Thailand burning season

Our experience:

  • We’ve spent quite a bit of time living and traveling in Thailand, and with the exception of June, we’ve been in Thailand during every other month (many of which we’ve been multiple times).

Our favorite time of the year in Thailand

November – January

This is easily our favorite time of the year to visit Chiang Mai and the surrounding area. It’s also a great time to visit the Andaman Coast and the islands in the Gulf.

Worst time to visit Thailand

Starting in mid-February, the burning season begins and it’s not a good time to be in the northern part of the country. We’ve been there for the burning season twice, and it’s rough. (Not recommended!)

By April, it is uncomfortably hot in the north. The only reprieve is the (very fun!) Songkran celebration (a water festival) which takes place during April.

Good to know: From February through April, the islands and coasts can be a better choice.

The summer months are very hot, muggy, and rainy in Thailand and can bring monsoon weather to the islands and Andaman Coast.

hiking in Thailand

Thailand is a country in the middle of mainland Southeast Asia with nearly 320,000 square miles (513,120 km²) an odd shape with a long tail leading down towards the equator.

Thailand has everything from high mountains and an upland plateau in the north, to central plains and tropical islands in the south.

is it ok to visit thailand in june

The map above shows a very rough break down of the northern, central and souther regions of the country. Generally speaking, you can consider Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai to be in the north, Bangkok is part of central and the lower leg and Thai islands make up the south.

Best Time to Visit Thailand | Long tail boat in Koh Lipe

The weather in Thailand varies from region to region with the north experiencing the greatest fluctuation in temperatures throughout the year and the south experiencing very little variation the closer you get to the equator.

The climate is mostly tropical with warm temperatures throughout the year (with the exception of the mountains in the far north).

The seasons in Thailand can be categorized into three main groups: Cool, Hot and Rainy.

Though somewhat unpredictable, and varying from coast to coast and by region, they follow the general pattern below.

  • Cool season:  November to February; also peak tourist season
  • Hot season:  March to May
  • Rainy season:  June to October

The cool season  is felt most distinctly in the far north, but temperatures hardly change in the south.

The hot season  is essentially the dry season where central and north are at their highest temperatures with clouds of dust gathering in the air.

The rainy season  is caused by the southwest monsoon, which is unpredictable. However, the Gulf Coast is effected less by the southwest monsoon and more by the northwest monsoon, causing November to consistently be its wettest month.

We’ve broken down the seasons by region below to give you a better idea of the climate in specific areas.

Seasons in Northern Thailand

Best Time to Visit Thailand | View from our apartment in Chiang Mai

The weather in northern Thailand tends to be less humid and experiences the greatest rage of temperatures throughout the year. During January, the average low temp in Chiang Mai is 59ºF (15ºC). On the flip side, during hot season, the north of the country is dry and dusty and temperatures can skyrocket.

  • Hot Season:  February – April
  • Rainy Season:  May – September
  • Cool Season:  October – January

What to pack for visiting Northern Thailand

  • Lots of layers for cooler nights and warmer days
  • Good hiking shoes or
  • Swimwear – even though you’re not by the water, there are plenty of pools and waterfalls!

Seasons in Central Thailand

Best Time to Visit Thailand | Bangkok's Grand Palace

Central Thailand experiences the country’s three seasons fairly equally throughout the year. The one constant is humidity, which makes the air feel hotter than it should.

  • Hot Season:   March – June
  • Rainy Season:  June – October
  • Cool Season:  October – February

What to pack for visiting Central Thailand

  • Loose, lightweight clothes & layers
  • A shawl or scarf to cover your shoulders when entering temples and religious sites
  • An  insulated water bottle  to stay hydrated

Seasons in South Thailand & the Thai Islands

Best Time to Visit Thailand | Mu Ko Lanta National Park

Temperatures in southern Thailand are more consistent throughout the year, with less variation the closer you get to the equator. There is really only 2 seasons down here: wet and dry.

The climate does vary from coast to coast in the south based on the different monsoons. Which is why we’ve split up the coasts below to show seasonal variations.

A Note About Diving:  Diving and snorkeling will be at it’s best during the winter months. December and January will be more crowded since it’s the peak season. If you want to see some mantas and local whale sharks, it’s best to plan your trip around February to April.

Phuket, Krabi & Andaman Coast (Southwest Coast)

  • The wettest months are September and October
  • Dry Season:  mid-November – March

Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Koh Tao (Gulf of Thailand)

  • The rainiest months are October and November
  • “Shoulder season”  (not too much rain): January and February
  • May – October can be windy

What to pack for visiting Southern Thailand

  • Reef safe sunscreen
  • Bug repellant  (solids are the way to go!)
  • A wide brimmed hat or baseball cap to keep the sun out of your eyes

Cool Season in Thailand: November – February

Khao Sok National Park Thailand

Peak of the dry season in most parts of the country, November sees cooler temperatures and plenty of sunshine. The western Thai Gulf coast is the only part of the country still experiencing rain.

Getting into the peak of tourism season in Thailand, weather is great all over the country and temperatures are relatively cool. There is little to no rainfall and tourists flock to the beaches for plenty of sunshine.

Peak tourism season and great weather all over Thailand. Accommodation will be at premium prices, and you should book well in advance. The cooler temps in the northern region are great for hiking in the mountains and trekking through the jungles.

Still peak tourism season all over the country. The Chinese New Year typically happens in February (thought it follows the lunar calendar and the exact vary from year to year).

Best Time to Visit Thailand | Grand Canyon sunset in Pai

Best places to visit during cool season in Thailand

  • Northern Thailand  experiences the most comfortable weather of the year during this time.  Chiang Mai , Chiang Rai and  Pai  are all great places to add to your itinerary.
  • Consider visiting  lesser known destinations , as this time of year is peak tourism season.
  • Sam Phan Bok:  A natural wonder only accessible during dry season. Found in Ubon Ratchathani, Isan, thousands of holes are scattered across the Mekong River bed.
  • Bo Sang , a small village in the north hosts their annual Umbrella Festival on the 3rd weekend in January.
  • Chinatown in  Bangkok   is a fun place to witness the Chinese New Year celebrations.

  • The Andaman coast  is at it’s best in November, so it’s a perfect time to go  island hopping .

Hot Season in Thailand: March – May

Best Time to Visit Thailand | Koh Lanta

Temperatures are starting to heat up all over Thailand, so it’s best to stay near the water. In the north, burning season is in full force, so you’ll want to avoid traveling there as much as possible. (Trust us, we lived in Chiang Mai during these months, and we would  not  recommend it.) Instead, this is prime time for  diving in the Andaman Sea  at popular locations such as the Similan Islands.

One of the hottest months in Thailand. Be sure your accommodation has air conditioning if you are visiting during this month. Remember to drink lots of water and use plenty of sunscreen too.

Another incredibly hot month in Thailand. With many public and religious holidays, it’s a good time to get off the beaten path and experience new and interesting cultural celebrations.

Best places to visit during hot season in Thailand

  • The  ancient city of Ayutthaya  is a great place for boxing fans to visit on National Muay Thai Day
  • Bangkok, Phuket or  Chiang Mai   during Songkran Festival

  • Songkran Festival  is famous for it’s water fights in the streets takes place around the country in April during the Thai New Year

Rainy Season in Thailand: June – October

Best Time to Visit Thailand | Waterfalls around Chiang Mai

The start of the rainy season means you’ll want to carry an umbrella and wear shoes that can get wet. Take extra precautions on scooters as the roads can be dangerous when wet.

Wet and humid all over Thailand, you’ll want to pack and umbrella and wear plenty of bug spray! Be careful of leeches if you are planning on venturing into the jungle.

Typically the wettest month in all of Thailand. Come prepared for the rain and be sure to have a long list of indoor activities to entertain yourself during this month.

This is the wettest time of year on the Andaman coast, but rains generally ease up in the north.

Central and Northern Thailand will have dried up by October, but nearly all of the islands on both coasts will still be experiencing heavy rain.

Best Time to Visit Thailand | Khao Sok National Park

Best places to visit during rainy season in Thailand

  • National Parks such as  Khao Yai National Park and Kanchanaburi’s Erawan National Park  will be wonderful this time of year.
  • Koh Samui, Koh Phangan,  Hua Hin, and Cha Am will be some of the driest beaches and islands to visit.
  • Bangkok  for its magnitude of indoor activities and International festivals.
  • The  small mountain town of  Pai  for its decent weather in October.
  • Visit the  Mekong River  in the north to experience the mysterious natural phenomenon known as Naga Fireballs of Nong Khai in late October.

Best things to do in Thailand during rainy season

  • Phi Ta Khon Festival in Dan Sai district of Loei province

  • Experience  long boat races  on rivers all over the country in September.

The best time to visit Thailand in our opinion…

Best Time to Visit Thailand | Motorbiking to Pai

There really is no “bad” time to visit Thailand, but it’s a good idea to have the seasons in mind when planning your itinerary and activities you’d like to experience during your trip.

Our personal pick would be to visit Thailand between November and February, as you’ll have great weather all around the country.

When to avoid traveling in Thailand

  • Chiang Mai : If possible, avoid visiting from mid-February through early April. This is “burning season” and air quality can be quite bad.
  • Andaman Sea  (Krabi, Phi Phi, Phuket, Koh Lanta) : Rainy season is from May – October
  • Gulf Islands  (Koh Tao, Koh Chang, Koh Phangan, Koh Samui) : Rainfall is heaviest in October & November
  • Similan Islands : The National Marine Park is closed between the months of November through March.

Thailand is everyone first choice for holiday.

Hello ! I will be traveling to Thailand from May 12 to May 29th 2023 with my family. Is there any destinations that are closed to tourists to due the low season or rainy season? Which areas do you recommend me to go in May to avoid rain 😉 Thank you

Hello Wanderers! I am planning to visit Thailand later in the year, after having been there back at the turn of the century. I was very drawn overall toward the culturally rich aspects of life. My query is related to the continuing Covid 19 pandemic waves, and the related fallout: sudden travel restrictions, new testing rules, already booked reservations, which one is then unable to fulfill. Is there a thing such as outright relevant cause to have some pre-booked accommodations annulled, due situations fully beyond a tourist’s control, like a cancelled / well delayed flight, or service shutdown. Wonder if you could share feedback. Cheers ! Julius

This is a useful blog detailing about the best time to visit Thailand. What I liked about it is the description about the climate region-wise that makes planning a trip easy.

Hi, great page – comprehensive, yet easy to read, and great pictures. Maybe you can include a map of the country, making it easier for readers to see where these wonderful places are geographically located. Thanks.

Been to Thailand Phuket before loved it. Coming back next year in August 2022. Can you tell me. Are we able to travel to phi phi island. , And I’m praying Phuket will be open for international visitors. From AUSTRALIA, That are fully vaccinated, Hopefully. NO. QUARANTINE,

Similan Islands are closed from 1st May until end of October officially. In reality it however opens somewhere mid-October

Some of the popular places to visit in Thailand in June include Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Koh Samui, and Pattaya.

Thailand's northern province of Chiang Rai is well known for its attractive surroundings and stunning scenery. One of the best places to visit in Thailand in June is Chiang Rai, where one can enjoy the lush mountains at a cheaper price. The White Temple and Blue Temple are the two most visited temples in Chiang Rai. An integrated farm and zoo make up Chiang Mai's Singha Park, a popular tourist attraction for families. The hot-air balloon event is another draw at Singha Park. In addition, Chiang Rai is part of the "Golden Triangle," which includes Laos, Myanmar, and Thailand. The Golden Triangle used to be well-known for its opium trafficking. From Chiang Rai, cross-border tourism is also possible via river and land routes.

Koh-Samui-beach.jpg

The second-largest island in Thailand, Koh Samui, is one of the best islands to visit in Thailand in June . Its location reduces the impact of rains created by the southwest monsoon winds. It has a wide range of attractions for visitors, something for everyone, and it receives a lot of sunshine. There were many different kinds of rocks on this island, including Grandpa and Grandma rocks and elephant rocks. You can beat the heat by going on a hike in the morning and enjoying beach activities in the afternoon. Koh Samui is also a great place to spend your honeymoon in Thailand in June because you can see the best places at the best prices.

The ISAN regions of northeastern Thailand, which border Laos and Cambodia, are only briefly visited by a small percentage of tourists who come to Bangkok. There are several well-known provinces in this area, including Buriram, Udon Thani, and Ubon Ratchathani. The Khmer civilization left behind architectural marvels, peculiar festivals, a wealth of natural variety, and unknown indigenous fine arts. These are the main features that are overlooked in this area. The pottery from the Dan Kwain village, which has a rough feel, and unique handwoven silk are some of its particular handicrafts. The Surin Isan community, which is recognized for its expertise in handling elephants, usually organizes the yearly elephant roundup there. The impact of Laos on their cuisine has resulted in a complete departure from other Thai cuisines. The northeastern section of the nation has less rainfall at this time of year, making exploring the ISAN areas one by one among the best places to travel in Thailand in June.

Chiang-Mai-Thailand

Chiang Mai, located in northern Thailand, is the largest city there. Unlike other well-liked tourist destinations in Thailand, this city has largely preserved its traditional values. This is one of the best places to travel with family and friends in Thailand because it is surrounded by more than 250 temples. Mountains and thick forests separate Chiang Mai from the mainland. Compared to rival cities like Bangkok and Phuket, the cost of living is lower here. Hiking the Doi Inthanon mountains and traveling around the Mae Hong Son Loop are among the favorite things to do here. If you’re traveling to Thailand in June, then exploring the hidden villages in this loop shouldn’t be missed.

Things to do in Thailand in June

A trip to Thailand to check out its mountain routes and urban attractions is one of the best things to do in Thailand in June. It is also important to make sure that travel is reduced in the afternoon to avoid heat drain.

Explore the hidden villages in the north.

is it ok to visit thailand in june

The northern and northeastern parts of Thailand are usually less explored compared to other regions. While planning your Thailand trip in June , visiting these hidden villages can be added to your itinerary. As southern Thailand experiences tropical rainfall and storms, the northern part is mostly cool with on and off rains. The travel route along the Mae Hong Son exposes us to numerous villages and natural beauty. The northeastern ISAN regions offer us a fresh perspective on Thai culture and a completely different way of life.

Explore the urban attractions

Bangkok Floating market

One of the best things to do in Thailand in June is to take a tour of the urban attractions in Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Pattaya, and Krabi. These urban attractions consist of shopping centres, zoos, historical sites, temples, museums, and other leisure amenities. Because crowd activity starts to wane around this time, lodging costs and rent prices are lower. Therefore, it is advised to travel to Thailand's cities in June if you want to experience the country's culture at a lower cost.

Go Diving in Thailand in June

June in Thailand is a great time for diving, and thrilling water activites. You can explore places like Phuket, Koh Phi Phi, and the Similan Islands and enjoy fantastic diving opportunities with warm waters and excellent visibility.

  • Phi Ta Khon Ghost Festival is celebrated for three days in June to celebrate the rebirth of Prince Vessantara.

Thailand in June

June in Thailand

Despite it being hot and humid, June can actually be a good time to visit Thailand. Prices for accommodation are at their lowest, which means you can splurge for much-needed air-conditioning, as well as venues that might normally be out of your budget range. The rains often only come in the form of heavy showers rather than all-day gloom, so as long as you’re prepared for an afternoon shower with an umbrella and back-up plans for the beach, your days most likely won’t be spent staring forlornly out the window.

(For more information on when to go to Thailand, read our full post here .)

Tip: Most accommodations’ websites list high, low, and shoulder season prices. If not, consider (gently) bargaining for your room. Bargaining works especially well if you’re traveling in a group — therefore renting more than one room — or staying longer than a night or two.

Access to smaller islands can be fairly limited in June. Some spots, especially in the south Andaman on Thailand’s west coast, suspend ferry service entirely. Be sure to do some research to make certain you don’t plan to visit any spots that are closed, or that have very limited weekly service. Tip: Ko Chang and the surrounding islands receive more rain than anywhere else in Thailand in June – you might want to avoid this area during that month.

June festivals in Thailand

Be sure to check out some of the festivals held around Thailand in June; here are two of the main ones. Note that some June festivals overlap with the month of May .

Phi Ta Khon Festival This very unique festival is held solely in Loei province (450 kilometers north-east of Bankoki) in the Dan Sei district, Phi Ta Khon is festival all about ghosts — think of it as the Thai version of Halloween, or, better, yet, the Buddhist version. During the three-day festival, villagers dress up as ghosts, wearing intricately carved spirit masks, and children play tricks. A masked procession marks the first day, and competitions are held for the best costumes, masks and dancers.

Siam Tulip Festival

Held in the northeastern province of Chaiyaphum, this festival celebrates the blooming of the Siam Tulip. The purple-pink flowers (see photo above) cover the hillsides and make great photos. Also part of the festival is mountain biking and rock climbing contests.

Chaiayphum in on Thailand’s northern rail route , so it’s possible to take a train there from either Bangkok or Chiang Mai .

Weather in Thailand in June

On this page, introduction, june weather summary, where is best in thailand in june, what are the most popular thai islands in june, bangkok and central thailand, eastern thailand, northern thailand, northeast thailand, southeast thailand, southwest thailand, elsewhere on travelfish.

  • How to get to Thailand

June arrives and it feels like the wet season has had a false start. In most of Thailand the level of rainfall drops a little (except for Ko Chang where it increases a lot). Temperatures stay around the same or fall slightly. As far as islands go, Ko Samui, Ko Pha Ngan and Ko Tao are your best bet. They'll still see some rain, but are about the driest of a pretty wet lot.

Read reviews for Jungle Hill Beach Bungalow

Rainfall levels tend to drop a little in June in most parts of the country, making it a good choice for seeing lush landscapes without the more torrential rains of July and August. It’s a decent time to hit the Northern hills ( Pai , Mae Salong , Nan ), the Northeastern plateau ( Udon Thani , Phimai , Sakhon Nakhon ) and the Central to Upper plains ( Lopburi , Kamphaeng Phet ) to see brilliant green paddies stretching to the horizon. Rain tends to be heavier in the Eastern coastal provinces of Rayong , Chanthaburi and Trat , including Ko Chang .

The best options for beach lounging in June are found on and around the lower Gulf islands of Ko Samui , Ko Pha Ngan and Ko Tao . You might also consider the coastal beaches around Hua Hin and Cha-am along the upper Gulf coast, which see a bit less rain than most other regions. Frequent storms lash the Andaman Sea ( Phuket , Ko Phi Phi , Ko Lipe ) and eastern Gulf islands ( Ko Chang , Ko Maak , Ko Kut ), with skeleton staffs operating those resorts that stay open.

June in Bangkok and Central Thailand is pretty much like May with half the rain. You'll still see rain every other day, but, especially in the countryside, the rain starts to bring out some of the beauty. Waterfalls in Kanchanaburi will pick up strength and sites like Ayutthaya will begin to get some of their green back.

June marks the beginning of a three month period when it pretty much pelts down on Ko Chang — not all day for sure, but almost every day. This is perfect if you want to avoid crowds or traipse around in the jungle hunting leeches (they'll find you), less so if you want to sunbake and snorkel. Avoiding the crowds can be a good thing though, and accommodation prices certainly will start to fall, but you'd need to be very lucky to score a weeklong dry period in June on Ko Chang.

Temperatures continues to slowly decline and you've got half the rain of last month, but that is still quite a bit. Trekking will involve mud, leeches and wetness, so pack a poncho. Rain every other day. On the upside the rivers will be picking up, making rafting out of spots like Pai more fun. Simultaneously the jungle will continue its transition from parched wilderness to lush jungle. "Good the photos, bad for leeches" forms our Northern Thailand June weather report.

As with the rest of Thailand, a continued downward slide in daily average temperatures and less rainfall than the previous month. Mekong riverfront towns like Nong Khai, Sangkhom and That Phanom can be pretty this time of the year as the Mekong's waters will be picking up and they'll be a little more boat traffic to watch. Overall this isn't a bad time to visit the northeast.

While there is still rain, Ko Samui and surrounds is about your best bet for beach time in June. Samui, Ko Pha Ngan and Ko Tao are all reasonably good and certainly will have better weather than pretty much anything on the west coast or up around Ko Chang. So if it is island time you are after, this is the region where you should head to.

May and June are really not all that different on the Andaman coast. The rain level is about the same (roughly every other day) and the temperature slips only slightly. The seas pick up though and some ferries — notably those out to Ko Lipe run on a far less regular timetable. As with May, keep an eye out for discounted hotels in the big resort areas. On some of the quieter islands like Ko Jum and Ko Lanta some of the smaller guesthouses may shut down or run with just a skeleton staff.

Some islands and coastal areas can be affected by the monsoon, making beach holidays less attractive.

However, it is possible to visit northern regions such as Chiang Mai at this time, where the rains are not as intense and lush green scenery can be enjoyed. Travellers should be prepared for wet weather, but if you don't mind the occasional downpour and prefer fewer people, June can still offer unique cultural experiences and reduced accommodation prices.

June is the start of the rainy season in many parts of Thailand. Although not all regions receive heavy rainfall, it is common in some areas, especially in the central part of the country. Southern regions, such as the west coast (Andaman Sea) and some islands, also experience increased rainfall.

Rainfall amounts can vary widely, but intermittent showers, thunderstorms and high humidity can be expected during this month. Despite the rains, Thailand's weather in June still offers a unique experience, and many travellers appreciate the lush, green scenery and fewer tourists during the rainy season. Just be prepared for rainy weather and plan your activities and accommodation accordingly.

There are fewer tourists in Thailand in June than during the peak season, so popular tourist spots are less crowded. Beaches, temples and other attractions are likely to be more peaceful and quieter.

In terms of cost, this time of year can be the most budget-friendly option for travellers. Lower demand often results in lower prices for accommodation and excursions. However, it is important to note that some beach resorts and islands may be closed due to the rainy season, so it is advisable to check availability at desired locations.

When travelling to Thailand in June, your wardrobe should be geared towards keeping you cool and comfortable in the hot and humid weather. Favour lightweight and breathable clothing such as loose cotton or linen shirts and shorts. Don't forget to protect yourself from the intense summer sun with a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses and sunscreen.

For protection from the rain, bring a compact waterproof jacket. Make sure you have swimwear for beach holidays and water activities. If you plan to visit temples or cultural attractions, bring modest clothing that covers your shoulders and knees. Also, don't forget mosquito repellent and light outerwear for cooler evenings.

Is It Safe in Thailand?

is it ok to visit thailand in june

southtownboy / Getty Images

The jungle-draped, temple-packed Southeast Asian country of Thailand attracts nearly 40 million visitors per year, some eager to embark on the famed Banana Pancake backpacker trail , others in the market for a spiritual awakening or a life-changing bowl of massaman curry. Despite decades of turbulent politics, travelers remain safe in the main tourist hubs of Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Pai, and the ever-boozy islands. Of course, there are many less-trodden alternatives, too, that are just as safe to visit. Travelers need only to keep an eye out for scams, petty theft, and the inherent risk of driving on Thailand's notoriously chaotic roads.

Travel Advisories

  • The U.S. Department of State has issued a Level 1 Travel Advisory for Thailand, meaning tourists should "exercise normal precautions." Some parts of the country, however, such as the southernmost provinces of Yala, Pattani, Narathiwat, and Songkhla, are under a Level 3 ("reconsider travel") due to "periodic violence directed mostly at Thai government interests." The U.S. government has limited ability to provide emergency services to Americans in these areas .
  • The Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has also issued Level 1 Travel Health Notice for Thailand due to COVID-19. The country's borders remain closed to foreign nationals with few exceptions .

Is Thailand Dangerous?

For the most part, Thailand is not dangerous. Millions of tourists of all ages and levels of travel experience flood the country year after year to witness its grand waterfalls and ornate temples, mingle with the hill tribes on guided excursions, and feast on pad thai and street food . The people are delightful and the infrastructure in most places is accommodating to tourists. However, there are some scams to be aware of. According to the U.S. Embassy and Consulate, common scams include tuk-tuk and bus "sightseeing tours," scooter rental scams (claiming the rental has been damaged and demanding more money upon its return), and the "wrong change" scam . Educate yourself on the common scams and be familiar with the exchange rates before you go.

A greater concern is the danger of driving in Thailand. A 2018 World Health Organization (WHO) report showed that nearly 23,000 people die in traffic accidents every year in this country . That's more than two people per hour. And the ease of renting motorbikes with zero experience puts travelers at a high risk. Always learn to ride a motorbike properly before attempting to drive one and be extremely wary of riding on the back of someone else's. Vet companies well before booking bus trips because there are many safety concerns there, too.

Most travelers should get vaccinated for Hepatitis A and typhoid before going to Thailand. Many will also want to take prescription malaria medication before, during, and after their trip. Dengue fever , another mosquito-borne infection, is an epidemic in all urban and rural areas, so cover up as much as possible to avoid bites.

Is Thailand Safe for Solo Travelers?

Thailand is perfectly safe for solo travel . Even when you're by yourself, you'll never be too far from other travelers. Hostels are great opportunities to socialize and there are more than a thousand of them squeezed into this country, smaller than the state of Texas. Traveling solo, you'll still be faced with the same risk as any group—you're no more likely to catch malaria or get into a motorbike accident when by yourself, but you may be more prone to scamming and pickpocketing, so be extra careful. If you do go off the beaten tourist path in Thailand, do so with a group or a licensed guide.

Is Thailand Safe for Female Travelers?

Likewise, women are no more likely to catch a mosquito-born illness or get into a motorbike accident than men in Thailand. And even though sexual assault is common—a reported one in five Thais have experienced it—tourists are not the primary target of male attention. Female travelers are more likely to be hit on or harassed by fellow travelers than locals, so be extra vigilant on nights out.

Safety Tips for LGBTQ+ Travelers

Thailand has a thriving LGBTQ+ scene, especially in Bangkok , where much of the nightlife centers around Thai trans women. The urban areas are more accepting than rural areas when it comes to homosexuality, but for the most part, Thais are exceedingly welcoming and accepting. The one major safety concern is that Thailand has one of the highest HIV/AIDS infection rates in the world, so travelers should practice safe sex.

Safety Tips for BIPOC Travelers

There have been reports of discrimination on the basis of skin color in Thailand, but racism rarely leads to violence. There is a widespread cultural obsession with light skin here because darker complexions have historically been associated with rural poverty and working in the fields. You'll see skin whitening creams in every drugstore and Caucasian faces on beauty advertisements throughout the country. That being said, BIPOC travelers for the most part remain safe.

Safety Tips for Travelers

  • U.S. citizens should register their trips with the Department of State’s STEP program . That way, the local embassy will know you’re in Thailand and you'll receive updates on any growing political concerns.
  • Don’t get caught in potentially dangerous situations, like public protests and large gatherings that could turn violent.
  • It's a corrupt country and police officers will sometimes get in on the scams by targeting tourists for steep, paid-on-the-spot “fines.” Though it's common, bribery is illegal throughout Thailand.
  • All recreational drugs are illegal. Despite easy availability in some places, getting caught could result in steep fines and jail time. A handful of tourists overdose each year during the popular Full Moon Parties (and other parties) held on the island of Koh Phangan.
  • As with anywhere in the world, drink druggings are a problem here, perpetuated by the bucket drinks frequently served on the islands. Cocktails mixed in plastic buckets are often shared, giving people the opportunity to drug multiple people at once. In nightlife-oriented places such as Haad Rin , buckets can be bought from shacks on the beach and street. Stick to buying drinks from established bars for a little more accountability.
  • Smoke and haze are an annual problem in Northern Thailand. Intentionally set fires create choking smoke and pollution. The problem persists from late February until the rainy season beings in May. If you suffer from asthma, check air quality before traveling to Chiang Mai, Pai, and other areas during the “burning season.”
  • Some ATMs are fitted with hidden card-skimming devices that capture credentials. Stick to using well-lit ATMs or those attached to bank branches.
  • Pickpocketing occurs, particularly in tourist-oriented places such as Khao San Road. Don’t walk around with expensive smartphones or cameras on show. Avoid putting your phone on the table when eating and carry bags across your body instead of on one shoulder. Sometimes thieves on motorbikes will snatch phones or bags then speed away.
  • Theft is a real problem on night buses . A sleeping bag liner is a great, lightweight investment for keeping valuables close and inaccessible to others while you're sleeping.

Thailand is one of the easiest places to travel in Asia, but there are some top tips that first-time visitors should know © Witthaya Prasongsin / Getty Images

Thailand has a deserved reputation as one of the easiest places to travel in Asia. There’s an amazing amount to see , hassles are limited, English-language signs and menus are commonplace, and you can get around easily at almost any time of day or night.

However, there are a few things every traveler should know. Here are our top tips for making the most of your trip.

1. Rainy season varies depending on where you are

The June to October rainy season brings heavy showers and regular storms to northern, central and southwestern Thailand, creating dangerous conditions for travel by sea. The southeast coast and the Gulf of Thailand get soaked slightly later, from October to December.

Rainy-season travel means lower prices and smaller crowds, but some accommodations close and many island ferries stop running, including services to the Tarutao archipelago . If this is when you decide to visit, you'll definitely want to pack some kind of wet weather gear.

2. Check for recommended vaccinations

You’ve probably already been jabbed for COVID-19, but most doctors also recommend vaccination against tetanus and hepatitis A. Also consider a rabies shot – dogs, cats and monkeys can all carry the viral disease. Malaria is present along the borders with Laos , Cambodia , Myanmar and Malaysia . If you visit these regions, use anti-malarial prophylaxis such as atovaquone/proguanil or doxycycline.

3. Sensible travelers to Thailand book ahead

If you have your heart set on a particular boat journey, train trip, trek, tour or boutique stay, book ahead for the busy tourist season from November to March or during any religious holiday. During the rainy season, call or email ahead to check if places are open.

4. Follow local etiquette when meeting Thai people

When meeting locals in Thailand, the standard greeting is the wai – a respectful dip of the head with the hands held palms together in front of the chest. Don’t shake hands unless the other person initiates the handshake. If you get invited into a Thai home, remove your shoes before you enter and avoid pointing the soles of your feet towards another person.

5. Be respectful of Buddhism, a part of everyday life in Thailand

Some 95% of Thais are Buddhist, and the national religion weaves through every aspect of life. To show proper respect, remove footwear before entering any Buddhist structure, and wear clothing that covers the shoulders, upper arms and upper legs.

Never point the soles of your feet towards any Buddhist image (or monk), and don’t touch Buddha statues on the head. Give way to monks when walking on footpaths, and don’t sit next to them on public transport. It is also taboo for a woman to touch a monk or their belongings.

6. Dress modestly

Thai women and men usually avoid revealing outfits that show off a lot of skin. Swimsuits are fine for the beach, but away from the sand, throw on a sarong or fisher's pants, plus something that covers the shoulders if you visit religious sites. Topless or nude sunbathing is frowned upon and can attract unwanted attention.

7. Show respect for the king and royal family

The Thais take respect for the monarchy extremely seriously, and lèse-majesté (maligning the royal family) is a criminal offense. Never show disrespect towards the monarch or depictions of the royal family (including on money).

8. Know what to expect at the dining table

When dining out in Thailand, everything tends to arrive on the table at the same time, usually placed in the middle of the table for everyone to share. Thailand abandoned chopsticks in the 19th century. You’ll get a spoon and fork but no knife – but most dishes come as bite-sized morsels, so you won’t need one. Sticky rice is usually bundled up into balls and eaten with the fingers.

9. Vegetarian is a relative term in Thailand

Fish sauce, oyster sauce and egg are widely used as cooking ingredients in Thailand. The safest bet for people who don't eat fish or meat is to seek out Indian-owned vegetarian restaurants, or restaurants serving kin jay Buddhist cuisine. If in doubt, ask the person making the food if it is jay  – the term mang sa wirat just means food that doesn’t contain pieces of meat or fish but doesn't mean it's necessarily suitable for vegetarians.

10. Health risks include stomach bugs, mosquito bites and rabies

The most common trouble travelers face in Thailand is trip-spoiling stomach bugs. Never drink tap water, wash your hands before eating, stick to busy eating establishments and be cautious of ice, unwashed or unpeeled fruit and uncooked vegetables. If you become unwell, seek out private hospitals in larger cities rather than public hospitals.

Mosquito bites can easily become infected in Thailand’s tropical climate. Bring mosquito repellent, and use mosquito nets (or bring your own). Rabies is another risk – always seek medical attention if you are bitten by a dog, cat or monkey.

11. Smart travelers steer clear of drugs in Thailand

In June 2022,  marijuana and hemp were removed from the Category 5 narcotics list in Thailand. However, there are still restrictions and smoking marijuana in public is not recommended.

Crossing borders with Class A drugs carries the death penalty, and even the possession of small quantities can bring a hefty prison sentence – it’s really not worth the risk. Also note that smoking in public can attract heavy fines. If you take any prescription medicines, check that these are allowed into Thailand before you travel.

12. Prices may well be inflated for tourists

In general, Thailand is hassle-free, but tourists are often charged inflated prices for tuk-tuks and unmetered taxi rides – ask a local how much journeys should cost and use that as a yardstick for a fair fare.

Major tourist sites are popular stalking grounds for cab drivers and touts who will try to steer you towards dubious souvenir shops, fake "tourist offices" and second-rate places to stay, where you’ll inevitably pay more to cover their commission. Book transport directly with the operators to avoid dodgy deals from unscrupulous travel agents.

13. You may be approached by sex workers

Thailand’s sex industry may find you whether you want it to or not. Single male travelers (and even couples) can expect to be approached by sex workers or touts drumming up business, so be ready with a firm refusal.

Be aware that some bars, restaurants and karaoke venues are fronts for sex work – warning signs include red or pink strip lights, large numbers of skimpily dressed female staff and lots of foreign male customers.

14. Political protests can be tense and are best avoided

Thailand can have a lot of protests. When tensions flare up between the government and opposition groups, it can lead to blockades, flight cancellations and sometimes violence. Monitor local news sites such as the Nation for information on simmering political troubles, and avoid protests and other potential flash points.

15. Some governments advise against travel in Thailand’s south

The far south of Thailand, along the Malaysian border, has been wracked by a separatist insurgency since the 1940s. Most foreign governments advise against travel to the districts of Yala, Pattani, Narathiwat and parts of Songkhla.

16. Be very cautious when riding a scooter

Thousands of travelers rent a scooter or motorcycle in Thailand, but make sure your home driving license covers you for any vehicle you hire, and carry your passport (or a copy of the ID pages) in case the police ask for it.

Wear a helmet, ride cautiously and make sure the rental comes with liability insurance – every year, hundreds of tourists are injured in motorcycle and scooter accidents in Thailand. Always give way to larger vehicles, and watch out for livestock, potholes and other hazards on the road.

17. Follow local advice if there's a natural disaster

Thailand is vulnerable to earthquakes and tsunamis, as well as flooding, landslides and cyclones during the rainy season. Heed official advice in the event of a natural disaster, and contact your embassy for up-to-the-minute information on evacuation procedures.

Phuket in June: Weather, Events & What to Expect

June is a wonderful time to visit Phuket, Thailand’s largest island located in the Andaman Sea. While it is technically considered the start of the rainy season, the weather in June is still very pleasant, with plenty of sunny patches thrown in and occasional rainfall.

As the island enters the low season, visitors can enjoy lower prices and fewer crowds, making it the perfect time to experience Phuket’s natural beauty and unique culture. Whether you’re looking to relax on the pristine beaches or explore the island’s vibrant nightlife and local markets , there’s something for everyone in Phuket in June.

In this blog post, we’ll take a closer look at why June can still be a great time to visit Phuket and highlight some of the top activities and attractions to check out while you’re there.

Average Climate in Phuket in June

By June, you’ll be experiencing rainy season in Phuket , which runs from May to October. The average temperature during this month is around 28°C (82°F), with highs reaching up to 31°C (88°F) and lows around 25°C (77°F).

The humidity is quite high , hovering around 80%, making it feel much hotter than it actually is. The sea temperature is warm and pleasant, averaging around 29°C (84°F), making it ideal for water activities, though the waters may be too rough for swimming some days.

June is also one of the wettest months in Phuket, with an average of 220mm (8.7 inches) of rainfall throughout the month. However, the rain typically comes in short, heavy bursts rather than prolonged downpours, so it’s still possible to enjoy outdoor activities in between showers.

Although the summer equinox falls in June, and you have the most hours of daylight, it’s the month with the least sunshine hours in Phuket, where overcast skies are the norm.

If your aim in coming to Thailand is to sunbathe, June isn’t the month for you. However, the island’s lush greenery is at its peak during this time, and it’s a great time to visit if you’re looking for a quieter and more relaxed experience, as it’s considered the low season for tourism.

Phuket Festivals and Events in June

Here are some interesting festivals and events that happen in Phuket in June:

  • Laguna Phuket International Marathon: This popular marathon attracts runners from around the world. The event features multiple race distances, including a full marathon, a half marathon, and a fun run (10-11 June 2023)
  • Phuket Baba Wedding : This unique event celebrates the island’s traditional Peranakan Chinese culture and features a mock wedding ceremony where couples dress in traditional attire and participate in various customs and rituals. Hosted by the Thai Peranakan Association in Phuket Old Town, the event sees Thalang Road colourfully decorated. (2023 date TBC)
  • H.M. the Queen’s Birthday : Marked annually on 10 June
  • Por Tor Festival: Also known as the Hungry Ghost Festival, this Taoist event takes place in late June and honours the ancestors. It involves food, flowers, and incense offerings at shrines and temples and a colourful street procession. (2023 date TBC)
  • Phuket Surf Contest: Whilst June might not be ideal for swimming in Phuket, it’s perfect for catching the waves in this annual international events (23-25 June 2023) .
  • Full Moon Festival: Celebrated on the full moon day of the sixth lunar month (usually in June or July), this festival involves lighting lanterns, releasing paper boats into the sea, and other traditional customs. It is especially popular in the beach areas of Phuket , where visitors can enjoy a range of entertainment and activities. (2023, this will fall 1 July)

Things To Do With Kids In Phuket In June

As we see Phuket reach full swing of rainy season, it’s highly likely you’re going to need to organise a few back-up plans for those rainy days. Why no try:

  • Make a visit to Aquaria Phuket for a fabulous adventure under the sea while staying completely dry! Central Phuket Floresta
  • Take some silly selfies at Upside Down House
  • Froggys Fun Park has everything from arcade games to giant trampolines for an active day out indoors, at Jungceylon Shopping Centre, Patong.

We have a complete guide to Phuket rainy day activities over here.

A Note On Swimming At The Beach In Phuket During Wet Season

Swimming at Phuket’s beaches during the wet season (May-October) is generally not recommended due to the strong waves and currents and occasional rough weather. It is important to pay attention to the red warning flags posted at beaches and follow lifeguards’ instructions.

Some beaches may be closed to swimming during certain times due to safety concerns. However, some beaches in Phuket are still protected from rougher waters and may be safe to swim in during the wet season, such as Kata Noi Beach and Kamala Beach.

It is always best to exercise caution and stay informed about the local conditions when swimming at the beach in Phuket in June.

What To Wear In Phuket In June

Being prepared for the likelihood of frequent rain showers and occasional thunderstorms, you will want to think about adding these items to your packing list for June travel to Phuket:

  • Waterproof footwear : Choose waterproof shoes that can handle wet and slippery surfaces. Flip-flops and sandals can be slippery and uncomfortable during heavy rain.
  • Light layers : Wear light layers that can be easily removed or added depending on the weather. Consider packing a lightweight rain jacket or poncho to keep you dry during unexpected downpours.
  • Quick-drying clothing: Choose clothing made from quick-drying fabrics, such as polyester or nylon. This will allow you to stay comfortable even if you get caught in the rain.
  • Mosquito-repellent clothing : During the rainy season, mosquito activity is higher, and it’s important to protect yourself from mosquito bites. Consider wearing clothing treated with mosquito repellent, such as permethrin, or spray mosquito repellent on your clothing and skin.
  • Umbrella : Carry a compact and lightweight umbrella with you at all times to protect yourself from the rain.
  • Waterproof bag: Use a waterproof bag or backpack to protect your belongings from the rain.

Remember that the humidity level can be high during the rainy season, and temperatures can still be warm. Choose lightweight, breathable clothing that keeps you cool and comfortable in the heat and humidity.

We still wouldn’t scrimp on packing your beach vacation essentials too, including sunscreen, sunglasses, hats and sun-protective swimwear. Although it’s rainy season and there’s a lot of cloud cover, the UV index is still considered very high in June in Phuket.

If you will be visiting temples or other religious sites in Phuket, remember it is essential to dress modestly and cover your shoulders and knees in these places – we talk more about dress code here .

If you’ve forgotten any of your packing essentials , rest assured there are plenty of places you can go shopping in Phuket to pick up supplies.

Thailand Weather in June

Though the month of May sees the arrival of the rainy season, June is actually slightly drier. Koh Chang is the only part of the country where it rains more and the rainy season is full swing. The best weather conditions are found in Thailand’s southeastern Gulf, on Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, and Koh Tao. The north and southwest are also viable options, if you can handle a bit of rainfall, that is.

What to expect of the weather in Thailand in June

Bangkok and the surrounding area

Bangkok and the greater Bangkok area still suffer from intense, stifling heat. Air humidity is high as well – something you’ll notice immediately coming off the plane. It does rain less than in May, however, which makes it a great time to go and visit some of the temples and to explore some of the nature around Bangkok.

Ayutthaya – Soak up the culture and visit historical temples. Bangkok – Thailand’s capital blends old temples with ultra modern skyscrapers. Kanchanaburi – Town brimming with nature and history. Khao Yai National Park – The oldest nature reserve with wild elephants. Koh Samet – White sandy beaches, only three hours from Bangkok.

Koh Samui and the southeastern Gulf of Thailand

Thailand’s southeastern Gulf will have the most chance of sunshine. If you’re looking for sun, clear seas and nice beaches, Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao are the right place for you! Nevertheless, it’s still the rainy season, so it will rain occasionally. But sunshine is guaranteed!

Koh Phangan – Serene island that hosts large beach parties. Koh Samui – Popular island with long beaches and luxury accommodation. Koh Tao – Thailand’s number 1 island for snorkeling and diving.

Chiang Mai and the North of Thailand

Temperatures in Chiang Mai in June are slightly lower. There is the occasional shower as well, making for much more agreeable conditions. Because of the rainfall, nature is in full bloom and the waterfalls are starting to fill up with water again. A breath of fresh air after a long period of intense drought…

Chiang Mai – A great city surrounded by nature and rich in culture. Chiang Rai – Gorgeous natural surroundings and best known for the white temple. Mae Hong Son – Mountain tribes and rice fields near the Burmese border. Pai – Hippie-at-heart mountain village nestled in Thailand’s most beautiful valley.

Phuket and Krabi

June conditions in southwest Thailand are fairly similar to those in May. Intense downpours regularly make way for several hours of sunshine. Expect a fair amount of rain, though consecutive days of sunny weather and clear blue skies aren’t unheard of.

Khao Sok National Park – Wake up in a straw cabin on a clear blue lake. Koh Jum – Small-scale tourism near Koh Phi Phi. Koh Lanta – Laid-back atmosphere and nice beaches. Koh Phayam – Gorgeous but underdeveloped island. Koh Phi Phi – Thailand’s number 1 tropical party island. Koh Yao Yai – Big island with long and empty beaches. Krabi (Ao Nang) – The perfect place to start your island-hopping adventure. Phuket – Thailand’s largest island, best known for its beaches.

Koh Chang and the Eastern Gulf of Thailand

June marks the start of three months of heavy rainfall on Koh Chang and the islands that surround it. Showers are frequent and intense, which is not exactly ideal for snorkelers and sun worshippers. Still, June can also be seen as the perfect month to stay on Koh Chang for backpacker and travelers on a budget, as luxury hotel rooms will be a lot more affordable.

Koh Chang – Pleasant island with beautiful beaches and a laid-back atmosphere. Koh Kood – A gorgeous, and partially unspoiled, island. Koh Mak – Small-scale tourism, laid-back atmosphere. Koh Wai – Snorkeling island between Koh Chang and Koh Kood.

Koh Lipe and the Trang islands

Though less wet than in the month of May, June in Koh Lipe will still see several days of rainfall. However, there will also be dry and sunny days with blue skies as well. If you can deal with the rain, June is actually a great time to visit Koh Lipe. After all, after rain comes sunshine!

Koh Lipe – Tropical island, home to Thailand’s most beautiful beaches. Koh Mook – Small-scale tourism and a spectacular cave. Koh Ngai – Long golden beaches and no roads. Koh Tarutao – National park, former prison island, and camping site.

Isan region

Temperatures decrease lightly compared to previous months. There will be some rainfall here and there. Nature regains its green color after months of drought. Excellent weather conditions for visiting the mostly undiscovered northeastern part of Thailand.

Pha Taem National Park – Ancient murals along the Mekong River. Phimai – Thailand’s most beautiful Angkor Wat temples. Ubon Ratchathani – Large city in Isan region with many sights. Udon Thani – Large city near the Lao border, but famous mainly for its Red Lotus Sea.
