Miami Dolphins releasing linebacker Jerome Baker. Could he return?

bakers dolphin trips

The Dolphins are releasing linebacker Jerome Baker, a mainstay on the defense since being drafted in the third round in 2018.

ESPN reported that the Dolphins discussed a restructured contract with Baker and couldn’t come to an agreement.

With cornerback Xavien Howard also parting with the club, the longest-tenured Dolphins are now tight end Durham Smythe and kicker Jason Sanders, who also were drafted in 2018.

More: No Miami Dolphins money for Christian Wilkins? It appears so. Our thoughts. | Schad

Like the situation with Howard, the Dolphins are leaving open the possibility of Baker returning, ESPN reported.

NFL STATS CENTRAL: The latest NFL scores, schedules, odds, stats and more.

If Baker is designated as a post-June 1 release, the Dolphins would save $11 million under the salary cap. Baker was due to count $14.7 million against the cap.

Speaking at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis last week, general manager Chris Grier was vague when asked if Baker might be a salary cap casualty.

"We’d love to have Baker here," Grier said. "I think the big thing for us was to have the new defensive staff come in, spend time watching the team, watching the defense as a staff together. Once we have those discussions with the defensive staff, Mike (McDaniel) will get together and then we’ll make that decision here in the next couple of weeks.”

Baker, 27, who helped call defensive signals for the Dolphins, started 82 of the 94 games played for Miami. He recorded five interceptions, 21 passes defensed, six forced fumbles, 22.5 sacks and 587 tackles, with 31 tackles for loss. He also had 46 quarterback hits.

Baker was the Dolphins' nominee for the 2021 Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year award. He also won AFC defensive player of the month for December 2021 and was the 2019 recipient of the Good Guy Award presented by the Miami chapter of the Pro Football Writers of America, in recognition of his cooperation with the media.

Baker drew laughs throughout the league in 2019, when NFL Films had him wear a microphone during a game and he repeatedly searched the stands, wondering where "my mama" was sitting.

The Dolphins also announced they have released defensive back Keion Crossen and signed defensive tackle Isaiah Mack.

Mack, who turns 28 this month, has played for Tennessee, Baltimore and New England, appearing in 25 games with 2.5 sacks and 17 tackles.

Dolphins release starting LB Jerome Baker

bakers dolphin trips

MIAMI -- The Dolphins released linebacker Jerome Baker , the team announced Tuesday, in the latest of several moves the Dolphins have made this offseason to regain financial flexibility.

Baker was the team's third-round pick in 2018 and has started 82 games in his six NFL seasons. The starting inside linebacker was entering the final year of a three-year, $37.5 million contract he signed in 2021; releasing him saves Miami $9.8 million against the salary cap this season.

Baker, who underwent surgery on his wrist in January, was released with a failed physical designation.

The Dolphins also announced they are releasing cornerback Keion Crossen , who missed the entire 2023 season with an injury that was described as a freak accident.

In February, Miami released veteran Emmanuel Ogbah and designated cornerback Xavien Howard as a post-June 1 release -- moves that will save the team roughly $32.5 million in 2014.

A source told ESPN's Adam Schefter that Baker and the Dolphins discussed a contract restructure but couldn't come to an agreement. However, the door is not closed on Baker returning to the team after testing the free agent market.

General manager Chris Grier took a similar sentiment when discussing Howard's release.

"We had a long discussion and he understood it was a business decision," Grier said. "At the end of the day, we just felt it was right for him to have this opportunity for his agent to go see what's out there for him. But we didn't close the door on it.

"We're going to stay in communication as the process goes and see what happens, and we left the door open for him possibly coming back here too."

Miami declined to apply the franchise tag to any of its marquee pending free agents, including defensive tackles Christian Wilkins and offensive linemen Robert Hunt and Connor Williams . There is still time for the team to agree to a deal with each player before the league year begins March 13, and free agency opens.

The hours it’s open for each day are limited, make sure to check online before you visit to make sure you can fit this into your Moscow itinerary for that day!

Insider Tip: The Lenin’s Museum is there for people to pay their respect; remember to keep silent and move along quickly, it’s not intended for people to congregate around. Also, men are not allowed to wear hats and everyone must take their hands out of their pockets when inside the building.

The interior of the church surprises most people when they visit. In contrast to the large exterior, the inside is not so much one large area, but rather a collection of smaller areas, with many corridors and small rooms. There are 9 small chapels and one mausoleum grouped around a central tower.

Visiting the inside is like walking through a maze, there are even small signs all around the cathedral tracing where to walk, and pointing you in the right direction! The walls are meticulously decorated and painted with intricate floral designs and religious themes.

The church rarely holds service and is instead a museum open for the public to visit.

Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics

  • This museum is fun for both adults and children!
  • Admission is USD $4.00

The Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics is a museum dedicated to space exploration! The museum explores the history of flight, astronomy, space exploration, space technology, and space in the arts. It houses a large assortment of Soviet and Russian space-related exhibits, and the museum’s collection holds approximately 85,000 different items!

Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics

The museum does an excellent job of telling the full story of the exciting space race between the USSR and the US! It highlights the brightest moments in Russian history and humanity and is very interesting and fun for all ages!

If you’re a fan of space or just curious about gaining insight into Russia’s fascinating history of space exploration, make sure to add this to your 3 day itinerary in Moscow!

The Alexander Garden

  • A tranquil place to relax near the Red Square
  • Green lawns dotted with sculptures and lovely water features
  • The park is open every day and has no entrance fee

The Alexander Garden was one of the first urban public parks in Moscow! The garden premiered in 1821 and was built to celebrate Russia’s victory over Napoleon’s forces in 1812!

The park is beautiful and well maintained with paths to walk on and benches to rest on. The park contains three separate gardens: the upper garden, middle garden, and lower garden.

The Alexander Garden

Located in the upper garden, towards the main entrance to the park is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier with its eternal flame. This monument was created in 1967 and contains the body of a soldier who fell during the Great Patriotic War!

The park stretches along all the length of the western Kremlin wall for about half a mile. Due to its central location in the city, it’ll be easily accessible when you’re out exploring The Red Square.

It provides a bit of relief from the city’s high-energy city streets. Bring a picnic lunch, go for a walk, or just sit and people watch, this is one of the best Moscow sites to wind-down and relax!

Ostankino Television Tower

  • Television and radio tower in Moscow
  • Currently the tallest free-standing structure in Europe
  • Make sure you bring your passport when you visit, you can’t go up without it!

For spectacular views of the city, make sure to add the Ostankino Television Tower to your itinerary for Moscow! This impressive free-standing structure provides stunning views of the city in every direction. The glass floor at the top also provides great alternative views of the city!

Ostankino Television Tower

It takes just 58 seconds for visitors to reach the Tower’s observation deck by super fast elevator. The tower is open every day for long hours and is a great site in Moscow to check out! There is even a restaurant at the top where you can enjoy rotating views of the city while you dine on traditional Russian cuisine or European cuisine!

The tower is somewhat of an architectural surprise in a city that is not known for skyscrapers! To see the city from a new perspective, make sure to add this stop to your Moscow itinerary!

Izmaylovo District

  • The most popular attractions in this district are the kremlin and the flea market
  • Outside of the city center and easy to reach via metro
  • Most popular during the summer and on weekends

Travel outside the city center and discover a unique area of the city! The Izmaylovo District is a popular destination for locals and tourists alike, and one of the coolest places to see in Moscow! The two main attractions we recommend checking out are the Kremlin and the flea market.

The Izmailovo Kremlin was established as a cultural center and molded after traditional Russian architecture. This colorful complex is home to several single-subject museums, including a Russian folk art museum and a vodka museum!

Izmaylovo District

Next to the Kremlin is the Izmailovo open-air market, which dates back to the 17th century! The market is connected to the Izmailovo Kremlin by a wooden bridge. Pick up all your Russian souvenirs here, including traditional handicrafts, paintings, books, retro toys, and Soviet memorabilia!

You will find many hand-made and hand-painted options available at higher prices, as well as mass-produced souvenir options at lower prices!

Museum of Soviet Arcade Games

  • Closed on Mondays
  • Filled with old arcade games that visitors get to try out!
  • The museum also includes a small cafe and burger shop

For something a little different, check out the Museum of Soviet Arcade Games! The museum features roughly 60 machines from the Soviet era, including video games, pinball machines, and collaborative hockey foosball! The machines inside the museum were produced in the USSR in the mid-1970s.

Museum of Soviet Arcade Games

The best part is, most of the games are still playable! Purchase tickets and try the games out for yourself! The museum also has a neat little screening room that plays old Soviet cartoons and an area with Soviet magazines! This unique attraction is a fun addition to a 3 day itinerary in Moscow, and an attraction that all ages will enjoy!

Whether you’re spending one day in Moscow, or more, safety is an important thing to keep in mind when traveling to a big city! Overall, Moscow is a very safe place to visit. However, it is always recommended that tourists take certain precautions when traveling to a new destination!

The police in Moscow is extremely effective at making the city a safe place to visit and do their best to patrol all of the top Moscow, Russia tourist attractions. However, tourists can still be a target for pickpockets and scammers.

Moscow has a huge flow of tourists, therefore there is a risk for pickpocketing. Simple precautions will help eliminate your chances of being robbed. Stay vigilant, keep your items close to you at all times, and don’t flash your valuables!

If you’re planning a solo Moscow itinerary, you should have no need to worry, as the city is also considered safe for solo travelers, even women. Stay in the populated areas, try and not travel alone late at night, and never accept rides from strangers or taxis without a meter and correct signage.

The threat of natural disasters in Moscow is low, with the exception of severe winters when the temperature can dip below freezing! Bring a good, warm jacket if you visit in Winter.

However, please note that Russian views on homsexuality are far less accepting than those in Western Europe. Likewise, Non-Caucasian travellers may sadly encounter racism in Russia .

ALWAYS sort out your backpacker insurance before your trip. There’s plenty to choose from in that department, but a good place to start is Safety Wing .

After not being able to come to terms on a restructured contact, the Miami Dolphins are releasing linebacker Jerome Baker, according to ESPN . The Dolphins will clear $9.8 million in cap space by releasing Baker.

The Dolphins have left the door open for Baker to return, per the report, but with free agency looming, it appears that Baker is destined to test the open market for the first time in his career.

A former standout at Ohio State, Baker has spent his entire NFL career with the Dolphins, who selected him in the third round of the 2018 NFL Draft . Baker's versatility should help him on the open market as he has played both linebacker positions during his career.

In 94 games, Baker has tallied 587 tackles, 22.5 sacks, five interceptions (with two pick sixes), 21 passes broken up and six forced fumbles. Baker had 78 tackles, 1.5 sacks, two picks and three passes defended in 13 games last season.

If he doesn't return to Miami, one team that might make sense for Baker is the Steelers , who are in the market for a linebacker after suffering several injuries at that position a year ago. In Pittsburgh, Baker would be reunited with former Miami teammate Elandon Roberts , who stepped up last year when injuries decimated the Steelers' linebacker corps.

Dolphins releasing lb jerome baker, share this article.

The Miami Dolphins have slowly been working their way through transactions to become cap-compliant by the start of the new league year in a week’s time.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Dolphins said goodbye to one of their longest-tenured players on Tuesday – linebacker Jerome Baker.

Baker, 27, was drafted by Miami in the third round of the 2018 NFL draft following a collegiate career at Ohio State.

A starter from his rookie season, Baker recorded 587 tackles (31 for a loss), 46 quarterback hits, 22.5 sacks, 21 passes defensed, six forced fumbles and five interceptions during his six seasons in aqua and orange.

If this is a pre-June 1 cut, the Dolphins will save $9.8 million, according to Over the Cap, while incurring a dead-cap hit of $4.97 million in 2024.

It’s interesting to note that the Miami Herald’s Barry Jackson has reported that Baker agreed to take a pay cut in 2024, but the sides couldn’t come to an agreement.

Now, Miami will need to find another linebacker to pair alongside David Long Jr. in the middle of the defense.
