Whale Watching from Pilot Hill Yamba

whale watching tours yamba

Whale watching is an exhilarating experience and Pilot Hill is a great location to spot migrating whales.

Mathew Flinders discovered Yamba in 1799 and the view over the ocean, beaches and river system is stunning. There has been a continuous pilot station in situ here since 1877 and is the site of the first lighthouse built in 1880 until its current replacement was erected in 1955. Whilst looking for whales and dolphins read the dreamtime stories of how the Clarence was created on the interpretive panels at this historic site.

The Legendary Pacific Coast is the perfect place to witness the wonder of the world’s gentle giants during their annual migration from the south to the warmer waters in the north. From June to November you can see these magnificent, and in some cases, endangered species from either land or sea.

Spotting whales is fast becoming a must do wildlife experience all over the world and you can do it at a variety of destinations along the coastline, at perfect sandy beaches, on the top of towering sand dunes and rocky headlands and near coastal lakes and estuaries.

WHALE WATCHING AT YAMBA …with Reel Time Charters

With ocean water temperatures on the decline, whales are now on the move to find warmer waters to the north, and with the giant creatures passing Yamba on a daily basis the timing was perfect for Dave Gaden to launch Reel Time Fishing Charter’s latest venture, Yamba Whale Watch. With a new boat added to their fleet, Mr Gaden said he was excited to start taking people out to see the majestic mammals.

“We’ve been doing whale watching in Yamba for the last nine years in conjunction with fishing charters, but the demand has been so intense we were having trouble accommodating for both,” he said. “It got to the point where I decided to buy a purpose built boat for whale watching, which is very exciting. The whales have just started to arrive now, and they’ll be going until the first week of November. We’ve got a skipper lined up and will be able to run seven days a week.”

Mr Gaden said while Yamba isn’t normally associated with being a whale watching hot-spot like Hervey Bay, he was hoping to change that. “We’ve had some amazing experiences out on the water,” he said. “Legally we’re not allowed to go within 100m of a whale but that doesn’t stop them from coming right up to us. I’ve seen grown men burst into tears after seeing whales up close, there’s just something magical about it.”

Mr Gaden said he was excited to be able to launch a full-time whale watching venture. “If it’s anything like last season, so many people wanted to go, and there were plenty of whales out there,” he said. Yamba Whale Watch will run two trips a day, weather permitting, leaving from Yamba Marina on Monday to Friday and from Yamba Shores Tavern Saturday and Sunday.

Whale Watching In Yamba

Whale watching in Yamba! If you haven't seen these majestic beasts in the wild then believe us...it is breath-taking!

Here in Yamba we are treated to one of mother nature’s finest spectacles. Each year from late May through October we are lucky enough to witness the whale migration as they travel North. Whales travel vast distances from their Antarctic feeding grounds to tropical mating grounds. Luckily we are in the perfect spot to take it all in, so visit us for some whale watching in Yamba!

Already we have had a number of sightings from Main beach, Pippi Beach, and Angourie point. The most common culprits are Humpback and Southern Right Whales, as well as our local Dolphins.  Having said that there have been reported sightings of False Killer Whales and Minke Whales too!

Best viewing times are early morning or late afternoon to avoid glare, which leaves plenty of time to check out the town or catch some waves. If you decide you would like to take a closer look there is a local whale watching tour operator as well.

If you’re thinking of catching the show we have plenty of rooms available at great rates. We are just moments from Yamba Main beach, and less than five minutes to either Turners Beach or Pippi Beach so there are plenty of vantage points close by. From May to November, thousands of whales migrate along the New South Wales coast from Antarctica to the South Pacific and back again. From Tweed Heads in the north to Eden in the south, you can observe the ‘Humpback Highway’ from lookouts on land (see the  Wild About Whales  website to find the best vantage points), or hop aboard a cruise to see these gentle giants up close.

Spot whales on the North Coast

In far northern NSW, hop aboard the catamaran George Bass to spot whales with  Coolangatta Whale Watch , boarding in  Tweed Heads , an 8.5-hour drive (or 1.5-hour flight) north of Sydney.

Spot whales from  Cape Byron , the Australian mainland’s most easterly point, a 40-minute drive south of Tweed Heads, and on small cruise tours such as  Whale Watching Byron Bay  and  Blue Bay Whale Watching , which departs from the pretty village of  Brunswick Heads . If watching whales from a kayak is more your thing, head out with  Go Sea Kayak Byron Bay  or  Cape Byron Kayaks .

A half-hour drive south of Byron Bay,  Ballina  is home to the Ballina Head and Black Head lookouts — both good for spotting whales. Or join a cruise with  Out of the Blue Adventures , accompanied by a marine biologist.

At  Iluka Bluff , an hour’s drive south of Ballina, you’ll find a dedicated whale-watching platform with outstanding views.  Wooli Deep Sea Tours  takes visitors out on the water to spot whales and explore the beautiful Solitary Islands Marine Park.

How about swimming alongside humpback whales? At  Jetty Dive  in  Coffs Harbour , a 5.5-hour drive north of Sydney, you can don a wetsuit, mask and fins, and slide into the water alongside whales. The curious creatures often glide right up to the swimmers to take a closer look.

Port Macquarie  is the halfway point between Sydney and Byron Bay (four hours from either) and has a 9km Coastal Walk that is dotted with vantage points perfect for whale spotting. Cruise on  Port Jet Cruise Adventures ’ Wave Rider, one of the fastest commercial whale-watching boats around, or get a bird’s-eye view with  Port Macquarie Seaplanes .

At  Port Stephens , 2.5 hours from Sydney, grab your binoculars and head to Tomaree Head, Barry Park at Fingal Bay, Fishermans Bay, Birubi Point or Boat Harbour Headland. Cruise operators include  Moonshadow-TQC Cruises , and  Aquamarine Adventures .

In the city of  Newcastle , two hours north of Sydney,  NOVA Cruises  heads out to spot whales in the open water. For great views from dry land, head to Shepherds Hill lookout, popular with locals.

Watch for whales in Sydney

Sit back and watch the whales pass by from the lookouts at  Sydney Harbour ’s North and South Head. At the tip of the Northern Beaches, Barrenjoey Head at  Palm Beach  offers an elevated viewpoint. For on-the-water experiences,  FantaSea Cruising ,  Bass & Flinders Cruises ,  Sydney Princess Cruises  and  Manly Ocean Adventures  are just some of the whale-watching cruise boats that leave from Circular Quay, Darling Harbour and Manly.

See whales on the South Coast

Jervis Bay , a three-hour drive south of Sydney, is halfway along the whales’ 4,000km migration route, and whales often stop here to rest and play with newborn calves. You can swim with whales with  Dive Jervis Bay,  or head out with cruise operators such as  Jervis Bay Wild . Head to Penguin Head at  Culburra Beach  or the viewing platform in  Booderee National Park  to watch from the shore.

Joined to the mainland by a sand bar,  Broulee Island , two hours south of Jervis Bay, is another great vantage point. At  Toragy Point , a panoramic lookout has information about whales and marine life as well as great views.

An hour’s drive further south,  Narooma Charters  runs whale-watching tours to stunning  Montague Island . Also near Narooma, you can learn about the significance of whales in Aboriginal culture, through  Ngaran Ngaran Culture Awareness , which includes Whale Dreaming ceremonies as part of its tours during the whale-watching season.

At the coastal town of Merimbula,  Sapphire Coastal Adventures  offers a 100 per cent whale spotting guarantee. It’s an 80-minute drive south of Narooma or less than six hours from Sydney.

Last but not least is  Eden , half an hour south of Merimbula. Whales are a huge part of the history of this small town, which was a whaling centre for centuries before becoming a whale-watching hub. In calm Twofold Bay, calves get a rest and whales feed before their final leg back to Antarctica. Take a self-drive tour along the  Killer Whale Trail  that takes you to five historic whaling sites, or get out on the water with  Cat Balou Cruises  or  Freedom Charters . The  Eden Whale Festival  in October–November has events including a land-based whale-spotting tour and tours of historic Davidson Whaling Station, plus food, entertainment, music, film and fireworks.

Embrace the contrast of Newcastle ’s dramatically beautiful stretch of coast and its former industrial prosperity, which is etched in grand buildings and architecture repurposed to service a vibrant, blossoming city. Ease into a relaxed city escape in this must-visit metropolis just two hours from Sydney as you explore a contemporary downtown crammed with arts, culture and design gems and an enviable food scene.

Seek out history, art and treasure

Get your bearings in this ocean-side city with a sedate sojourn aboard Newcastle’s Famous Tram . Allow yourself to be transported back in time on the detailed replica of a 1930s tram and gain insights into Newcastle’s rich heritage during a commentated city tour.

Take in the city’s Pacific-gazing splendour from Fort Scratchley , which has stood sentry over Newcastle since 1882. Feel yourself drawn into the port city’s fascinating convict history as you learn how an incarcerated workforce created Australia’s first coal mine.

Satisfy your cultural yearnings with a dip into the program of exhibitions, performances and events at the heritage-listed Civic Theatre in the city centre, connecting with local creatives over a rotation of comedy, drama and music in this lovely theatre from the 1930s.

If you love the thrill of a good garment hunt, set aside some time to scour the city’s treasure-laden vintage shops and artisan markets. Lose track of time as you browse the wares of the area’s established and emerging artists, designers, makers and producers at Newcastle’s Olive Tree Market , which takes place on the first Saturday of each month at Civic Park. Or get your rummage on at The Conscious Exchange in Islington, where you’ll find pre-loved and vintage clothing, accessories and homewares, plus eco-skincare and nature-care play products. You’ll also find Stoned Saint Moon and Hide and Seeker in Islington, among many more second-hand stores pocketed around the city.

Embrace the outdoors

Let Newcastle’s enlivening ocean-laced breeze guide you from the city to its outskirts and bushland beyond on your favourite mode of transport, be by foot and on wheels. Cover plenty of ground on a cycle from the city to the suburbs with Newy Rides ’ three-hour Newcastle Essentials tour, or discover the area’s history, street art and cafés at a slower pace with Newcastle Afoot walking tours.

If that offshore, deep-blue water is beckoning you with the promise of an awe-filled adventure, jump on a custom-built vessel with CoastXP . From sightseeing year-round to whale watching between June and October, you’ll learn about local marine life, geology, Aboriginal heritage and unique landmarks, including wrecks, islands and sea caves. Or gather your inner circle and charter a working harbour boat via Spitfire Pilot Boats for a memorable bespoke cruise in the waters around Newcastle.

Take the plunge in Merewether Ocean Baths , the largest man-made ocean pool in the southern hemisphere, or dip into the ocean at one of the city’s sandy beaches. Then lace up your walking shoes and follow a self-guided walking trail, such as the 6km Bathers Way; the 5km Convict and Industry Walk; the 3.2km Shoreline Walk; or the short (450-metre) but deeply moving Memorial Walk that commemorates the 100th anniversary of the landing at Gallipoli and the pioneers of steel-making. Immerse in the worlds of science and history on the 10km Newcastle Coastal Geotrail , which follows clifftops and coastal trails from Nobbys Beach to Merewether headland.

More lush green reserves invite you to commune with nature and exhale deeply. Delve into nearby Blackbutt Reserve , Glenrock State Conservation Area , Blue Gum Hills Regional Park, Kooragang Wetlands, and the 15km Fernleigh Track , which runs along a disused rail line between Newcastle and neighbouring Lake Macquarie.

Bite into a vibrant foodie scene

Savour the fresh flavours sourced from producers and wineries from the nearby Hunter region and enhanced by welcome bursts of creative energy across Newcastle’s super-charged dining landscape.

Feel spoilt for choice in Newcastle East, between the harbourside Foreshore Park and the ocean, where outstanding fare is easy to stumble upon. Start the day with an eponymous Monkey Fry featuring South American sausage at Three Monkeys Café in Cooks Hill or enjoy seasonal dishes starring locally sourced ingredients at East End Hub , on the Newcastle Beach end of King Street. Indulge a love of books as you settle in for great coffee, an intellectually inspired toastie and vintage reads at The Press Book House on Hunter Street.

Once the morning begins to ebb into lunch, take a seat at the elegant Signal Box in the Market Street Lawn precinct. Here, the food ethos centres on ingredients that can be hand-made in-house. Spend a long and languid lunchtime (or dinner) grazing on the likes of whole-roasted snapper and rock lobster mornay.

Feast on classic, abundant seafood plates at Scratchley’s on the Wharf . Experience a contemporary imagining of the ocean’s harvests at Scotties Beach House near Newcastle Beach, or slurp fresh oysters while absorbing the spectrum of Pacific blues at Noah's on the Beach . Delight your taste buds with vibrant, beachside-breezy Asian fare at the Newcastle instalment of Byron Bay-born eatery Light Years .

If you’re in celebration mode, book a table at Subo , on Hunter Street in the central Newcastle, where you can go all out with the five-course menu matched with top-notch Australian wines.

In nearby Newcastle West, dig into Greek, Spanish and Lebanese-inspired dishes at The Wickham Boatshed , a relaxed space overlooking the working harbour. Watch the talented chefs conjure up perfectly balanced flavours at Flotilla , also in Wickham, or continue away from the city centre to discover Equium Social in Mayfield, where deliciously wholesome fare is served in an art-filled space that supports local creatives.

Relax with drink before dinner

Newcastle isn’t short of watering holes to replenish your stamina after a day diving under breakers or exploring the city’s nooks. Relish the moody and intimate space at The Koutetsu , a Newcastle West bar specialising in innovative cocktails and premium whiskies.

Sample the house-made delicious spirits at the smart bar lined with barrels at Earp Distilling Co. , set within an historic warehouse precinct in Carrington, a 10-minute drive north of the city centre. You can also unravel the mystery of distillation during one of the Earp’s masterclasses in the fine art of gin-making.

Newcastle East has plenty of options, too. Enjoy boutique beers with pizza and burgers at FogHorn Brewhouse ’s art deco warehouse; soak up the 1920s vibe as you sip on cocktails and graze on lavish share plates at Babylon ; and delight in delicious yum cha with tasty cocktails at Ginger Meg’s .

While away the late afternoon at the beautiful art deco bar and beer garden at Clarendon Hotel on Hunter Street, or sample fine craft beers at The Grain Store in a generously proportioned café space near Newcastle Beach.

Elevate your evening with a well put-together cocktail or Brazilian-style barbecue meal at Meet , or grab a seat at the rooftop bar at the QT Newcastle for a sophisticated sunset dalliance that slips seamlessly into the evening.

Recharge for another day in Newy

There’s no shortage of fine establishments to rest your head after a day sampling the city’s many inspiring experiences. Immerse in the lavish interiors of the impeccably styled Crystalbrook Kingsley , the city’s first five-star hotel. Housed within a rotund, brutalist building, this destination hotel comes complete with a rooftop restaurant, Roundhouse. Let hours slip away as you indulge in Roundhouse’s dishes of beautifully compiled flavours while looking out over Nobby’s Beach, or take in stunning city views from the hotel’s sleek Romberg’s bar.

Take your cue from hotel chain QT’s playfulness at design-led QT Newcastle as you lean into the sleek aesthetic and quirkiness of your room, and be intrigued by the locally focussed, contemporary Australian menu at the hotel’s restaurant, Jana , which features plates from the grill.

Make the most of the city’s sandy shores by staying at Noah’s on the Beach , directly opposite Newcastle Beach in the city’s east – many of the rooms have floor-to-ceiling glass doors that open onto balconies. Let those holiday feelings take hold when you pop downstairs to the restaurant for sundowners.

Appreciate the convenience of being within walking distance to the area’s attractions at Novotel Newcastle Beach Hotel , which offers contemporary accommodation on a corner position on King Street. Also on King Street, the budget-friendly Holiday Inn Express is handily located right next to the Newcastle Interchange, the city’s major transport hub.

Iluka Bluff lookout

Stay as long as you like to enjoy the views at Iluka Bluff lookout, near Yamba. Not only is it an excellent whale watching spot, it’s also a great place to picnic.

  • It’s about a ten minute walk from the carpark to the lookout via a set of steps.
  • Park entry fees do not apply if you're visiting Iluka Bluff.

The platform at Iluka Bluff lookout is perfectly positioned for an aerial view of the entire Bundjalung area, complete with a soundscape of waves crashing on to the rocky bluff walls below.

The mouth of one of the region’s largest waterways, the Clarence River, lies just south and to the north you’ll see glorious beaches and Woody Head.

It’s great place to see dolphins cruising around near the mouth of the river and whales on the annual migration along the coast, so be sure to take your binoculars.

Stop for a quick look on your travels along the north coast or bring a picnic and stay for longer, there is an undercover picnic shelter a short walk from the lookout.

The world-renowned Jacaranda Festival is held nearby Grafton in late October to early November every year. This is the oldest floral festival still celebrated in Australia and brings the local community together in celebration of the Jacaranda trees, the joy of spring and the heritage and tradition of community carnivals. We always like to think of Jacaranda Season as an opportunity to connect with a sense of wonder – seeing the trees do their purple freeze-frame fireworks display; a tree-lined avenue looking like something out of an impressionist painting; or just glancing up and seeing the sky through a curtain of purple blooms – there’s nothing like these moments to plug us into a sense of gratitude for the here and now. 20 Fun Things To Do In Yamba

- This post may contain affiliate links. Read our disclosure.

Yamba may not have the super luxurious beachfront apartments and boutiques of Noosa or the celebrity status of Byron Bay but there’s no doubt there’s a bit of a buzz happening around the seaside town of Yamba. Like most seaside towns on Australia’s east coast, this lovely coastal destination is rapidly changing from a surfing destination to a holiday destination and there’s a growing number of things to do in Yamba.

Although Yamba is on the north coast of New South Wales, it’s closer in weather, distance and beach culture to Brisbane than it is to Sydney. In some ways, Yamba feels like Noosa before the boom.

Surrounded by national park, the Clarence River and beautiful beaches, it’s easy to see why Yamba is becoming a go-to spot for a quintessential Aussie beach holiday.

A population of 7000 swells over Christmas and Easter when Yamba’s motels and caravan parks are packed with summer holidaymakers.

Also read this post for the best Australian landmarks to visit while travelling around the country.

  • Amazing surf beaches and great weather.
  • Yamba prawns are famous and you should definitely try them.
  • It’s not as packed (or as expensive) as more developed beach destinations in northern NSW or Queensland

The closest airports are Grafton, which is a regional airport that has flights from Sydney, and the Gold Coast airport is a 2.5-hour drive away.

Surfers started visiting Yamba in the 1960s and a National Surfing Reserve was established in Angourie in 2007.

20 Fun Things to do in Yamba

yamba lighthouse

The Yamba lighthouse on Pilot Hill, which is a grassy area with amazing ocean views should be your first stop in Yamba.

The hill is the perfect spot for a lighthouse and the first one was built here in 1880. The current one was built in 1955.

Yamba Point is a popular spot for a picnic (grab some fish and chips) and it’s a good place to spot whales from the shore when they swim past during the annual migration back to Antarctica.

2- Enjoy a Yamba beach

yamba beach

Yamba’s main drawcard is its amazing beaches and there are 11 to choose from between Yamba and Angourie, which is a smaller town 5km to the south of Yamba.

Some would say that Yamba’s has the best beaches in Australia .

Spend the day sunbathing and swimming at Turners Beach or Main Beach or discover one of the quieter beaches.

Here are the top beaches to explore around Yamba.

The beach below the historic Pacific Hotel is patrolled in summer and has a saltwater rock pool that is great for kids.

Main Beach is also home to the Surf Life Saving Club.

The rock pools are great for kids to look for crabs and facilities at the beach include a kiosk, picnic tables and toilets.

Between the break wall and the lighthouse, Turners Beach is also patrolled in summer and has toilets, showers and picnic tables.

The northern and southern ends of Turners Beach is popular for surfing. The surf break is protected from the wind by the point and is a relatively safe surf break for younger surfers.

Rock fishing or fishing off the break wall is also a fun thing to do.

When the surf’s up and if you’re looking for a calm beach for the kids, head to Whiting Beach.

This river beach is a great spot to cool off without the waves and is a popular place to go fishing.

Any keen surfer will tell you that Angourie is an internationally recognised surfing destination with several challenging breaks. And if you’re a surfer you already know that surfing is the top thing to do in Yamba.

Back Beach (south of Angourie Point) is the beach to go if you’re an experienced surfer and Angourie Point is the place that draws serious surfers.

It’s one of a few protected surfing reserves in Australia.

Spooky Beach is north of Angourie Point and another option for experienced surfers but brave beginners might like to throw their boards in the water here too.

Pippi Beach has lovely views and is a popular beach for summer surfing competitions.

The Yamba breakwalls, where the Clarence River meets the ocean, were built between 1950 and 1971 to stop the sand buildup.

The walls protect the channel from the large waves that threatened boats cruising through the channel.

The Yamba breakwall is also a fantastic place to go for a walk, especially at sunset.

You’ll find the breakwall between Whiting Beach and Turners Beach.

Boats at the yamba marina - check out the marina for things to do in Yamba

The warm waters off Australia’s east coast are perfect for fishing and it should come as no surprise that one of the top things to do in Yamba is to go fishing.

If you’re keen on sport fishing, Yamba is a good place to fish for various types of Marlin (blue, black and striped) as well as Mahi-Mahi, Sailfish, Tuna, Wahoo and Mackerel.

There’s a choice of fishing charter companies that will take you out on a fishing tour or charter a boat and head off on your own game fishing adventure.

See whales and dolphins on a whale-watching cruise or from the headlands during their annual migration.

You can spot the humpback whales all along the east coast and if you’re there when the whales are migrating (July to October) put whale watching as one of the things to do in Yamba on your activity list.

Although Yamba doesn’t have a well-developed whale watching industry like Hervey Bay in Queensland, it’s possible to have some amazing experiences on the water.

Check out this guide to Hervey Bay’s whale watching boats and here are some other things to do in Hervey Bay .

things to do in yamba - river cruise

A history cruise on the Clarence River is a relaxing way to enjoy the waterways around Yamba.

Clarence River Ferries operates this cruise on Wednesdays, departing f rom Yamba (11 am) and Iluka (11.45 am) cruising the waterways for a few hours and returning to Yamba at 3 pm.

Scenic river cruises cost $25 (half price for kids) and normal ferry rides operate daily and cost $8. For more details go here .

On other days, catch the ferry to Iluka, where you’ll find the freshest prawns (caught by the commercial fishing fleet) at the Clarence River Fishermen’s Co-op.

Iluka is a small fishing village that is also popular for recreational fishing as there are several good fishing spots along the river.

The Iluka Rainforest walking track is a lovely 2.6km seaside rainforest walk past strangler figs and vines to stunning views from the headland. Keep an eye out for sea eagles, ospreys and oystercatchers.

A former bluestone mine up until 1899, Angourie’s freshwater green and blue pools are popular picnic spots and swimming holes.

The former quarrying sites supplied the rock used to build the Yamba break wall.

These are fairly deep swimming holes to cool off in but is not suitable for swimming all year round due to toxic algae in the water. Check the council’s website before going.

The pools are in the Angourie Reserve (between Spooky Beach and Angourie Beach).

Yuraygir National Park stretches from Angourie to Red Rock and is a coastal national park where generations of the Yaegl and Gumbaynggirr people camped and fished.

The park has a spiritual significance to the Aboriginal community and has diverse bioregions, including littoral rainforest, eucalypt forest, woodland and wetlands.

It’s the place to spot coastal emus, which are now an endangered species (there are less than 100 left in this park), squirrel gliders, eastern grass owls and rufous bettongs, which are rare marsupials.

The national park has campground facilities and short walks but if you’re a keen hiker, plan to do the four-day hike.

The two main markets in Yamba are the Yamba River Markets and the Yamba Farmers and Producers Market.

Yamba River Markets happens on the fourth Sunday of each month at Ford Park, River Street, Yamba, and is a great place for breakfast, coffee and to shop for fruit, vegetables, meat and jams and taste German-style bratwurst and Kransky.

Yamba Farmers and Producers Market is on Wednesdays between 7 am and 11 am in the car park between Whiting and Turners Beach.

Organic, chemical-free and free-range are the buzz words at this market.

If you enjoy visiting markets, here are some excellent Gold Coast markets to discover to the north of Yamba.

The Yamba cinema is in a quaint timber building and has three movies on rotation every week. Check out the shows here .

Yamba Cinema is at 13 Coldstream Street, Yamba.

Spend a couple of hours on foot or hire a bicycle to explore the Yamba historic trail. Start at the Yamba Historic Museum (which is worth spending some time in, even if you’re not doing the walk – see below).

Walk past Lion’s Park and the Yamba Fire Station, which dates back to 1957 and turn left into Coldstream Street then walk past the Yamba Oval. The picket fence was erected in 1936 and is still standing.

Turn right into Claude Street and left into Wooli Street, past the fibro cottage at the corner to One Mile Peg and Fred Phillips Memorial Park. Fred Phillips was a storekeeper, oyster farmer and shire council member in Yamba who contributed to the community.

Continue along Wooli Street to the Angourie Road roundabout. The road to Angourie was built on the railway line, which was used to transport rock for the construction of the Middle Wall and the southern breakwater wall.

Walk across the bridge towards the river and turn left towards the Yamba fishing fleet and continue along to Ford Park, which was formed by filling in Blacks Bay and Barclay’s Bay (named after fisherman and oyster farmer George Barclay).

Continue following the trail to Whiting Beach on Hickey Island and Shoal Bay, which was named by Matthew Flinders in 1799, and on to the Breakwater, Turner’s Beach (named after the works paymaster who drowned here) and onto Harbour Street.

Look for the Flinders Well memorial, which is on the spot where Matthew Flinders found water when he landed in Yamba.

Other buildings to see are the Ritz Building on the original site of the Pacific Hotel, opened by Captian William Mann in 1873, the Yamba Library was once the School of Arts Hall and the place where dances and public meetings were held and the heritage-listed Yamba Police Station built in 1903.

This small museum operated by the Port of Yamba Historical Society has displays that focus on Yamba’s maritime history.

Objects include Francis Freeburn’s (the first pilot in Yamba) telescope, exhibitions on shipwrecks and submarines, and a display of the public education system in Yamba.

It’s a good place to connect with local historians and volunteers.

Yamba Museum is on River Street, Yamba. Opening hours are Tuesday to Thursday (10 am to 4.30 pm), Saturday and Sunday (2 pm to 4.30 pm). Entry fee is $3 (free for children).

The Yamba Bowling Club allows bowlers of all levels to enjoy and learn the game, so if you’ve never tried bowling, this is the club to give it a go.

The club runs a barefoot bowls programme (for kids aged 12 years and above) during school holidays

The club offers free coaching and you can find the weekly programme and roll-up times here .

Yamba Bowling Club is in the Bowlo Sports & Leisure complex, 44 Wooli Street, Yamba.

Looking for something to do in Yamba on a rainy day? If you’re visiting with kids, head to the Bowlo Sports & Leisure Club for a game of ten pin bowling.

Besides a four-lane ten pin bowling alley, the centre also has an 18-hole mini-golf course (with sand bunkers and water traps) and a rock-climbing wall.

Bowlo Sports & Leisure Club is at 44 Wooli Street, Yamba.

17- Make new friends in a Yamba pub

Yamba Pub The Block

Yamba’s laid back vibe makes it a friendly place and one of the best places to meet new friends is in a Yamba pub.

Yamba Shores Tavern is a large waterfront pub, bistro and deck where you can sit for lunch or dinner.

There’s a large playground for the kids and a rolling roster of bands and other live entertainment.

Yamba Shores Tavern is at 64 The Mainbrace, Yamba

maclean bagpipe band in the main street

Soak up Scottish history in the historic town of Maclean, which is a mosaic of farmland, cane fields, fishing boats on the river and tartan-painted power poles.

Other attractions with a Scottish flavour are the Maclean Bicentennial Museum and the Scottish Cairn, which is a memorial built in honour of the region’s Scottish settlers.

The best time of year to visit Maclean is during the Highland Gathering festival at Easter time, when there are concerts on the street, kilts, bagpipe music and traditional highland games.

We happened to roll up to Maclean at the start of the ANZAC Day parade, just as an F18 flew over the town.

The flyover was followed by the parade where hundreds of people marched past cute buildings and the bagpipe band created a stirring atmosphere.

Follow the Clarence River – past Maclean – to Grafton, which became a city in 1885.

Attractions along the way include Woodford Island and its McFarlane Bridge, which is 100 years old.

There’s a quaint radio museum in Lawrence and the Grafton Heritage trail is a delight to explore.

Grafton is a handsome city with delightful heritage architecture and a number of National Trust buildings, such as the Grafton Gaol.

The best time to visit Grafton is during the Jacaranda Festival (October) when the city’s handsome avenues ablaze with purple blossoms.

The Yamba Golf & Country Club’s first three holes were built in 1956 and the golf course has grown from strength to strength, being named QLD PGA Regional Pro-AM in 2016 and 2017, two years in a row.

Even if you’re not a golfer, you’ll enjoy the lovely view from the clubhouse and The Deck Café is a good spot for breakfast, coffee or a drink.

The club also has a live entertainment programme and social activities.

Yamba Golf & Country Club is at River Street, Yamba. Green fees for members are $12 for a social game. If you’re a beginner, a two-month introductory membership costs $50. Social membership costs $10 a year.
