Leaders in Responsible Travel

Responsible Travel practice is at the heart of every program that we offer in the Himalaya. World Expeditions have pioneered many unique philanthropic initiatives that benefit our staff, local communities and the environment. When you book one of our adventures you’re supporting a program that is committed to safety and sustainability.

Stay at our exclusive semi-permanent camps in Nepal

Four decades of feedback and experience has proven that camping provides the most authentic trekking experience. Across the Annapurna and Everest regions you’ll enjoy the extra comfort of our exclusive camps, which feature standing height tents, clean beds with mattresses and pillows, a heated dining room, composting sit down toilets and more. Do yourself and the environment a favour by choosing our minimal impact accommodations.

All meals on Nepal treks included

Did you know that meals on a 2 week tea-house based trek in Nepal could cost you in excess of US$800pp?! Value for money, peace of mind, looking after your health as well as the local landscapes are just some of the reasons why we believe it’s a wise decision to choose a Nepal trek with all meals included. Watch our ‘7 Reasons Why We Include Meals On Our Nepal Treks’ video on every Nepal trip page to learn even more.

World Firsts

We proudly pioneered the first ever trekking trip to Tibet (1991), and developed trails in Nepal and the Indian Himalaya that had never before been used commercially, including the Api Himal and a traverse from Kashmir to Ladakh through Zanskar (1983). We also piloted the first commercial opportunity to walk The Great Himalaya Trail (2010) linking the high passes from Nepal’s most eastern to western borders.

Innovative Active Itineraries

We’ve been organising treks, climbs and tours in the Himalaya for four decades. Our firsthand knowledge of the region is unmatched, and we continue to push the envelope each year by innovating new programs while also finessing our classics. From a short four-day family trek in the Annapurna region to a challenging mountain bike traverse from Tibet to Nepal, we’re sure to have something for every age, interest and fitness level.

Great Value, Highly Inclusive

On top of all meals, highly trained local guides, an experienced trekking and cooking crew and exceptional camping services, we also provide you with the use of a trek pack, which includes a quality sleeping bag, down or fibre fill jacket and insulated mat (valued at over US$500).

Expert Guides

Our guides in the field are the real keys to our success, making your experiences exceptional. From Tim Macartney-Snape, who with Greg Mortimer completed the first Australian summit of Mount Everest, to Bir Singh, one of Nepal’s most experienced guides—our leaders are the pillars of our Himalayan adventures.

Stay at our comfortable semi-permanent campsites in Nepal's Everest region&#160;-&#160;<i>Photo:&#160;Mark Tipple</i>

The countries of Nepal, Bhutan, Sikkim and India present some of the world's poorest living conditions. According to the United Nations 2010 Human Development Report "environmental degradation intensifies inequality through adverse impacts on already disadvantaged people and inequalities in human development amplify environmental degradation". World Expeditions chooses to make a difference by putting in place initiatives that reduce our impact and giving back to the places and people we encounter. To minimise our impact on the natural environment we practice the '7 Principals of Leave No Trace', in addition to supporting local economies by employing guides and staff from local communities. Our Animal Welfare Code of Conduct, Child Welfare Code of Conduct and Porter Welfare Policy ensure the well-being of animals and children encountered on our adventures, as well as the mountain porters we employ on our treks.

Private eco campsites

In the Everest and Annapurna regions, our sustainable private campsites feature standing room, fixed two person tents equipped with raised beds, mattresses and pillows. Dining rooms offer a comfortable environment to dine and socialise with fellow trekkers, with cushioned seating, picture windows with mountain views and, at higher altitudes, a pot belly stove for warmth. Ablution blocks have western style sit toilets and wash basins.

Wilderness camping

Enjoy our fully supported, self-sufficient camping featuring quality two person tents with good ventilation that have been erected in scenic wilderness settings as well as a dining tent and a toilet tent with a sit toilet. Our crew take care of the logistics, including food preparation, as we focus on keeping our impact on the environment to a minimum.

In the Annapurna and Everest regions we have specially appointed eco lodges which adhere to our very specific criteria of not burning wood and follow our menu and hygiene guidelines.

In cities and large towns you will be accommodated in 3-4 star properties that are generally centrally located, atmospheric, and where we have seen a very high traveller satisfaction over many years.

Excellent from start to finish! This journey is an experience of a lifetime and Sanjaya, Tenjing & porters helped me to achieve this.

Everest Base Camp Trek Tour

We had a wonderful time in Nepal. We did an Everest base camp trek in early January with alpine ramble treks and they were amazing, the team were super helpful and professional. From the begging to end, we all had a really great time. Upon arrival, we were welcomed by the friendly and cheerful driver Kumar and our guide Iman, and took us to the hotel where we met Dil (owner of the company ) and explained us everything about the trek and also helped us with the gear that we needed for our trek. The team is extremely helpful and very attentive. We really enjoyed the time Being with this team and already looking forward to come back to Nepal for another adventure. We will surely go with alpine ramble!

Everest Base Camp Trek 12 Days

I experienced the greatest adventure of a lifetime with some wonderful people. The whole tour was organized properly. I would like to thank Ram ; trip manager, my guide ; Santa Bhai, exceptionaly sensible and experienced guide who knows his job ; just listen to what he says and your trip will be smooth and successful, Dilli maama; my caring potter. All of them took the best care of me from the start of my trek till the last day. It was my solo trip and I couldn't have asked for a better experience.

An Everest View Trek 9 Days

I can't believe that just a few short days ago I was strolling the streets of Kathmandu after having trekked in the Himalayas. My host Shailesh was very welcoming and attentive. His brother Na Win expertly guided me through the "hills" on the Everest view trail which leads to the Everest base camp. Kumar carried this 65yo couch potato's 8kg pack like it was a feather. He is more used to 130kg! Na Win and Kumar patiently waited as I crawled up the trail from Lukla, through Phakding, Namche Bazar to Tengboche and back. Uphill all the way it seemed! I think Nepal actually means "uphill."

Everest Base Camp Trek with Helicopter Return

In the beginning, I signed up for a group but no one signed up for the same date with me so I ended up doing a solo trip to Everest base camp with my guide and also my porter, Mr.Santa. I was a bit worried at first but then I found lots of friends during the trek to EBC. Mr.Santa took great care of me, always walked behind me to check if everything was going well. Mr. Sheilesh came to the airport to welcome me and dropped me off at the airport at the end of the trip. He was also very kind and open to modifying the plan as I requested. I had a beautiful time in Nepal and wonderful experiences during my EBC trek.

Everest Base Camp Trek Tour

Everest Base Camp I usually don’t write reviews but in this case I felt that everyone should know what a world class company Ace really is. From the very first email until even now after the trek is done, they have never failed to keep me in the loop with info, changes and updates regarding my personal questions or anything related to the trip. They are a fast, sufficient and caring company with their hearts in the right place. I felt very much prepared to embark this journey with Ace and I’m happy I did. I did the EBC trek in October 2019. Our guides Madan (Lead Guide) and Rupesh (Assistance Guide) where the best guides I could ever wished for. They both made sure that we were doing fine throughout the trek. Every evening they would inform us of what was going to happen the next day and if there was any concerns or worries Madan had this gift of making us feel better. His positive attitude was very helpful and he made us feel that we could succeed in anything if we put our positive mind to it. Unfortunately I became sick on part of the trek. Rupesh would always come and check on me a few times a day. Even when the doctor came around for me it was Rupesh who stayed with me. I thought that was very kind of him. Madan at the other hand was very caring and made sure that I did what I needed to do. He would check up on me all the time, making sure that I drank enough fluid, ate the correct food and take my medicine. He would ask me a few times a day how I was feeling and made sure I was sleeping well. At one point I became very tired and weak. Madan would walk with me, he would never rush me into anything and even carried my bag for me for the last 3 days. He was patient, professional, showed a strong leadership presence, very funny, uplifted, knowledgeable and has a kind heart. Qualities which will take you far in life but certainly something what is needed as a guide on a challenging trek like EBC. I believe that if it was not for Madan and Rupesh to be so supportive and caring I might not of made it all the way up to EBC. For this I’m forever grateful. The porters were young boys with great strength. Our bags were picked up in the morning and dropped off at our next destination before we would arrived without fail. They were always happy and polity. If you can live without internet, hot water and luxuries for some time, if you love mountains and are open for different food and culture. If you dare to jump right out of your comfort zone then definitely this is the thing to do. No regrets at all. Thank you Ace, Madan, Rupesh and porters for this incredible experience. I definitely will recommend you all to my friends and who knows I might even come back one day. Petra x

Everest Base Camp Trek and Fly back by Helicopter Tour

Everest Base Camp Trek and Fly back by Helicopter

This is simply incredible trekking with Peregrine Treks. The breathtaking views seem out of this world and you come away awestruck. Everything is looked after and our lead guide Dawa Sherpa was knowledgeable and helpful at every stage. He was always checking to make sure you were doing alright and if people became sick he looked after you. I can't say enough about Dawa and his team of assistant guides and porters if you have the chance to ask him. Accommodation in the Everest Region is simple but best and foods are also hygienic. We were lucky enough to be put in with a great group of mixed ages and countries of origin and and we all became quick friends. If you have been thinking about this trip just lock it in trust me you won't be disappointed with Peregrine Treks and Tours with an experienced and trained guide.

Annapurna Homestay Trek Tour

Annapurna Homestay Trek

Enjoyed the trip apart from the wet day 4 (supposed to be the day with the best views) with leeches in the forest! Challenging treks for 50+year olds, but do-able. A relatively inexpensive trek that becomes quite expensive when meals at 25USD per person per day are added, along with the obligatory tips for guides and porters.

Langtang Valley trek 10 Days

I arrived in Kathmandu and had been on a previous tour, the Himilayan Adventure team head by Rana therefore picked me up from my previous hotel and took me to my new residence for the evening; here I met my guide and was given the detailed info regarding the holiday. Rana was very approachable and a great front man for the company. I started off on my trek the next day with Durga, my guide for the trek. I can honestly say that the experience was everything a trek should be, it was challenging, I explored local life, I made friends and I was 150% looked after. The guidance given by Durga was excellent; he pointed out fauna , flora and the Nepalese animals, he told me about the history related to the trek and most importantly spoke about how to best manage the trek, walking and breathing. Overall I had a magnificent time, no stone was left unturned. Thankyou Aditya for your utmost attention and to Rana for running such a great tour.

Draped along the spine of the Himalayas, Nepal is a land of sublime scenery, time-worn temples and some of the best hiking trails on the planet. Although it is a poor country, Nepal is rich in scenic splendor and artistic treasures – a wondrous crossroads of religions, cultures and geography. Hinduism holds sway throughout the country’s south while Buddhism flows across the northern border from the Tibetan Plateau. Both great faiths beautifully fuse ancient animist beliefs and shaman rituals, forming a rich and varied cultural treasure-house. The kingdom has long exerted a pull on the Western imagination; it's the kind of country that lingers in your dreams long after you leave it. This is why so many travelers are drawn back to Nepal, armed the second time around with a greater appreciation of its natural and cultural complexity, a stout pair of walking boots and a desire for sculpted calf muscles! Nepal Hiking Team helped us orchestrate our adventure, and they were spot on with everything. A wonderful company you can trust. Right from the very beginning, the correspondence sealed the deal with Mr. Ganga's fast and swift replies to queries. Then as we arrived at the airport, we were greeted by Mr. Ganga himself, along with our guide- Prakash . The Annapurna Panorama Trek truly does capture the natural and cultural essence of the region, and with Prakash's insight and his vast knowledge about the culture, the people and the temples- the trip was an enlightening experience. Overall, it was one of the most beautiful and amazing treks, largely due to the hard work and dedication of the agency and the clear passion they show in their work. It is a company that goes above and beyond with their services and show true care.

How to plan your dream trip to the Himalayas

Bradley Mayhew

Jan 28, 2021 • 5 min read

Stunning view of the Himalaya mountains (Cholatse and Taboche to the left), Ngozumpa glacier, and Gokyo lakes (the world's highest freshwater lakes, sacred for both Hindus and Buddhists), as seen on top of Gokyo Ri (5,357 m), near the village of Gokyo, in Sagarmatha National Park, UNESCO World Heritage Site in Khumbu region, Solukhumbu district, eastern Nepal, Asia.

For mountain lovers and the vertically inclined the Himalayas represent nothing less than the crowning apex of nature's grandeur. Here dramatic forested gorges rise to skylines of snow-capped glaciated peaks through a landscape that ranges from high-altitude desert to dripping rhododendron forest.

Home to some 50 million people, this is no alpine wilderness, but rather a vibrant mosaic of peoples, cultures and communities, criss-crossed by ancient trading and pilgrimage routes that offer their own unique inspiration. Test your mettle against some of the world's most audacious and dangerous roads, or set a more measured pace on a trek through yak pastures to prayer flag-strewn passes haunted by snow leopards and red pandas. Stretching in a 1550 mile-long arc (2500km) across Asia from Kashmir to Kathmandu , Lhasa to Ladakh , the Himalayan range is a big place. Focus your pilgrimage on one of these dream trips.

Brightly colored prayer flags flutter in the breeze beside a bright, clear lake surrounded by sandy colored hills

Ladakh – India's little Tibet

Hidden over high passes in an arid, largely treeless rain shadow, Ladakh is classic Trans Himalayan scenery: huge khaki-colored valleys and harsh rock walls brought alive by the occasional splash of irrigated green. Traditional Tibetan Buddhist culture remains intact here, with spectacularly located monasteries that burst into life during medieval masked dance festivals that have changed little in 500 years. Travelers should expect epic treks, sparkling high-altitude mountain lakes, and a well developed infrastructure with inexpensive guesthouses around the capital, Leh .

When to go: June to September.

Getting there: Daily flights from Delhi to Leh, or take the spectacular seasonal high roads over the Himalayas from Manali or Srinigar .

Suggested itinerary: Hire a jeep or an Enfield motorbike and drive out to ancient Hemis , Lamayuru and Thiksey monasteries, taking a side trip to the turquoise lake of Pangong Tso bordering Tibet ; afterwards, do a five-day homestay trek through the Markha Valley.

Off the beaten track alternative: Spiti , in neighboring Himachal Pradesh , has the same dramatic mountain scenery and monasteries but without the crowds. Trek from village to village with a local organization and overnight at the incredible monasteries of Dhankar and Tabo .

A woman visiting stupa is about to descend a staircase of a monastery

Tibet – roof of the world

The high Tibetan plateau is the rooftop of Asia, hidden from the Indian subcontinent behind the ramparts of the Great Himalaya. Despite Chinese-led modernization, Tibet 's great monasteries still hum with murmured mantras and the flicker of yak butter lamps. Sublime landscapes, ranging from rolling grasslands to high-altitude turquoise lakes, a vibrant Buddhist culture and the friendly and resilient Tibetan people are the highlights here, as are the views of Everest's North Face – miles better than anything you'll see in Nepal.

When to go: Mid-May to September.

Getting there: Flights to Lhasa from  Chengdu , Beijing and many other cities in China , or take the world's highest train from China to Lhasa.

Suggested itinerary: Join a tour for the seven- to ten-day overland trip from Lhasa to Kathmandu, stopping at the incredible multistory stupa (structure containing Buddhist relics) at Gyantse and the spectacular medieval monastery at Sakya.

Off the beaten track alternative:  Complete a rugged three-day trek around Asia's most sacred peak, Mt Kailash , in remote Western Tibet, and then visit the incredible Kashmiri-influenced art of Tsaparang and the Guge Kingdom, hidden deep in the weirdly eroded desert gorges of the Sutlej Valley. Paved roads and an airport outside Ali make the two-week trip much less arduous than it used to be, though you still have to hire transport and a guide through an agency in Lhasa or Kathmandu.

A series of yellow tents pitched on a rocky terrain at the foot of a snow-capped mountain

Nepal – a trekker's paradise

The best way to experience the mountains is on foot, and Himalayan treks just don't get any more spectacular or convenient than in Nepal . Follow mountain paths past lines of spinning prayer wheels and charming stone Sherpa or Tamang villages to the foot of jaw-dropping 8000m peaks like Annapurna or Everest, safe in the knowledge that at the end of the day you’re guaranteed a cozy bed and hot dinner. Add on a visit to the medieval cities of the Kathmandu Valley , once a Himalayan artistic powerhouse.

When to go: March, April, October, November.

Getting there: Fly to Kathmandu and hop on a domestic flight to Lukla for the Everest region. Pokhara is the launch pad for treks in the Annapurna region.

Suggested itinerary: To trek to Everest Base Camp you need a minimum of 14 days, but we recommend adding on a four day side visit to the stunning mountain lakes of the Gokyo valley. Factor in ample time to acclimatize.

Off the beaten track alternative: The 17-day walk around Manaslu is possibly Nepal's greatest teahouse trek (you stay in lodges along the way), or go camping expedition-style on an epic three-week trip to the Dolpo or Kanchenjunga regions.

Colorful prayer flags flutter in the breeze. A white monastery structure, built into the side of the mountain, is in the background

Bhutan – the last Shangri-la

As the last surviving great Himalayan kingdom, Bhutan has an otherworldly air that seems rooted in another age. Traditional dress is the norm everywhere, old-growth forest carpets the majority of the countryside and remote Himalayan peoples like the Layaps and Brokpas live a life largely untouched by the modern age. Simply put, Bhutan is like nowhere on earth. The catch? The fixed minimum daily rate of US$250 per person is mandatory, although this does include transport, meals, guide and accommodation.

When to go: March, April, September, October.

Getting there: Fly to Paro from Delhi or Bangkok, or drive overland from neighboring India.

Suggested itinerary: Explore the delightful Paro Valley and its iconic Tiger's Nest Hermitage  (Taktshang Goemba) before driving to the little-visited Haa Valley, the tiny capital of Thimphu and the sensual fortress-monastery of Punakha. Schedule your visit around one of Bhutan's colorful tsechus (monastic festivals).

Off the beaten track alternative: The tiny Himalayan kingdom of Mustang in Nepal also comes with a hefty daily permit cost (US$500 per person), though you'll get a chance to explore centuries-old Tibetan architecture and may even gain an audience with the king.

A practical guide to hiking the Himalayas

It's possible to experience the majesty of the Himalayas without breaking a sweat: Uttarakhand's Kumaon Hills offer routes for beginners, bringing rare birdlife, high-altitude views and remote villages into reach.

When should I go?

The peak hiking seasons in Nepal and Bhutan are February to March and October to November, with clear skies and moderate temperatures. In the northern Indian state of Uttarakhand, March to April and September to October offer the best weather without excessive heat. In most areas, views vanish during the rainy monsoon season (June to September). Trekking in deep winter (December to February) can be a bitterly cold experience, best left to accustomed hikers.

What clothes should I bring?

Temperatures drop quickly as you gain altitude, but you’ll work up a sweat while hiking, so bring layers that you can take off and put on again, as needed. Thermal underwear, lightweight trousers, fleece tops and a down jacket for cold nights are core pieces of kit.

What should I wear on my feet?

Some people trek in walking or trail-running shoes, but hiking boots will give your ankles more support. Use quick-drying socks and dry out your boots if they get wet to reduce the chance of blisters. Break in any new footwear before you hit the trails, too, and use hiking poles to reduce the impact on your knees.

Do I have to carry all my own gear?

Many trekkers do, but it’s easy to hire porters or yaks and packhorses at trailheads to carry your bags. Porter-guides (who guide trekkers and also help carry bags) charge from US$20 (£15) per day, and usually speak some English. On an organised trek, you may be able to hike with just your camera and water bottle or a light day pack.   Do I need a sleeping bag? Himalayan teahouses provide thin mattresses and blankets, but rooms are rarely heated, and a quality sleeping bag will help ensure a cosy night’s sleep. A ‘four season’ rating is best for high-altitude routes.

Should I buy bottled water on the trails?

The Himalayas are strewn with empty plastic bottles, left behind by irresponsible trekkers. Instead, bring a water bottle and purification tablets, or a portable water filter, to purify water as you go from the rivers that snake between high passes. Is altitude sickness a problem? And if so, how can I counteract the effects? Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) is a risk on any route that climbs above 2,500m. To combat it, limit your rate of ascent, taking regular rest days to acclimatise. Diamox (Acetazolamide) tablets can also reduce mild symptoms such as headaches, but if you experience severe symptoms, including nausea, dizziness or confusion, descend immediately — AMS can be fatal.

Will I need to get a trekking permit to hike in the Himalayas?

To visit Bhutan, you’ll need to arrange an organised tour through a licensed travel company; the overall price will include visa fees, obligatory daily tourist fees, and most of your costs, including for treks. In Nepal, you’ll need to arrange a guide through a local trekking agency and pay for a Trekking Agencies’ Association of Nepal card ( taan.org.np ). There are fees to enter conservation areas, including Sagarmatha National Park on the Everest Base Camp trail, and permits are needed to trek through border regions such as Mustang and Dolpo.

However, a trip at an altitude above 3000 m or 10000 ft will have uncertain natural or inclement weather conditions; altitude itself is a barrier, and adjusting to a different daily routine for most of you can be a potential challenge on a trek. Don’t take it too easy or casually, and be prepared. That can easily make life difficult on mountains. Simply think that mountains have their own natural rules, and we just need to abide by them. Rest can be a game changer in your life.

The Planning Phase: From now till you start your journey

Now we will discuss the points, which are essentially your preparation. It’s better to pay attention to details if you have made up your mind in favour of a Himalayan trek. When you get time, do go through the given links for more understanding. Note the headings so that you can do your own re(search) on the points mentioned here.

Choose the right season or time for your trek :

Any trekking route in the Himalayas will have its own specified season(s) that are supposedly the “best time to visit”. During this period, a particular route showcases most of the beauties and features it is known for. Additionally, you get a safer passage to complete your trek as well.

Each such suitable season for a particular trek will have different beauties and offerings, and you don’t get them all together. But trust us, each season will delight you with something or other.

Decide on the trekking grade :

All Himalayan treks are graded according to their difficulty level to complete. Consider starting with an Easy grade trek . You should try a route that will be well within your control as a whole; don’t test any extremes. Most likely first time you are going to a high altitude place and stay above ~ 3000 m/10000 ft.

People with previous hiking experiences in low altitudes who are living an active lifestyle or following a fitness schedule for the time being may consider a  Moderate level trek , going up to the highest altitude of ~ 4300 m – 14000 ft while camping or sleeping below 4000 m – 13000 ft of altitude.

Research the trekking route or the region :

Now these treks are located in different states or destinations across the Indian Himalayas . Try to see which ones suit you best, your preferred locations that match your vacation time, and any other preferences. All the destinations are indeed beautiful, but at times it’s a matter of convenience to choose a particular region.

Sometimes you may have heard about or been recommended a particular trek route. Before taking up your trek, research your chosen trekking route thoroughly. Get information on the trail conditions, weather patterns, altitude changes, and any cultural and natural landmarks along the way. This will help you prepare mentally and physically for the trek.

Pro tip : Consider choosing a trek from a shortlist that most matches with the above mentioned three points.

Talk with someone you know:

This is a quite natural thing that you would like to talk to someone you know who has been on treks, preferably in the Himalayas. Or maybe you just heard about trekking from a person, and now you are here as part of your research. First-hand information from people you know matters, as they should have taken many of these steps.

Otherwise, just get in touch with us so that we can talk. Often, it is easier to comprehend or understand when we talk.

Consider bookings through a reputed trekking tour operator/agency for trekking:

As a first-timer, it’s not normal that you can arrange a DIY (a.k.a. independent) trek in the Himalayas on your own. Well, maybe if you have highly experienced friends or family members to make a group. There are many logistical things the team would need to take care of to arrange an independent trekking tour.

Else, simply do your research and choose a professional organisation that takes care of the trekking logistics and helps you with many other things that you require. E.g., almost half of the points we discuss here are automatically taken care of by a reputed trekking company.

As a trekking tour operator, we offer Fixed Departure Treks that you may join as a solo member or with your group. Dates, costs, and services for these treks are fixed. Alternatively, if you already have your own group of people, you may opt for a Customised tour . Here dates, itinerary, level of service, and itinerary are tailor-made as suits your group. Cost depends on primarily the number of persons and level of service you prefer.

Pro tips : You pay for the professinal knowledge and on ground quality support. Do thorough research before choosing your trekking organisation. Consider getting a first-hand reference or recommendation from someone you know. There are many companies that are essentially travel portals or marketplaces, and Trek is one of the many available products and tickets they sell! It all depends on how the on-ground tour operator, who is responsible for managing and running the show, handles things! We suggest you avoid using a “booking agency”, unless highly trusted.

Keep a provision for an extra (buffer) day in your itinerary:

It may be pretty helpful to keep a buffer day or two in your travel itinerary. Keep this reserve day at the end of your trek. Either use it during an unforeseen event on the trek or later you just chill out a day after your trek.

Depending on a trek, sometimes it is convenient to reach the nearest railway station or airport on Day 0. Plan your travel itinerary accordingly.

Flexible flight tickets and reservations can be handy in dealing with such conditions.

Visit a doctor and consider getting a travel cum medical insurance for the trip:

It is always advisable that you visit a doctor well in advance before starting your trek. You must consult your doctor if you are already on medication or have an existing medical condition.

As already mentioned, trekking in the Himalayas involves certain risks, such as bad weather, accidents, and natural disasters. Consider getting comprehensive travel insurance that covers medical emergencies, evacuation, and repatriation. Check with your trekking company to see if they can arrange one for you.

Arrange the necessary permits and documents :

Treks within the Himalayas are in remote locations and require permits from various governing bodies, including the concerned forest department or district administration offices, etc. If you book with a company, they will obtain the necessary permits.

Always carry the original identity card with your address on it. It can be your AADHAR, driving licence, voter ID, passport, or any other government ID card (a PAN card is not a valid ID card as it doesn’t have an address on it). Keep one or two photocopies of the original. In some treks, you need to bring your recent passport photo for permit procedures.

Additionally, you may have to submit a medical fitness certificate from a doctor for some treks where it is applicable. As it’s an adventure activity, usually companies will require an indemnity clause signed by you as well.

Get fit for the trek:

Trekking in the Himalayas can be physically demanding, so it’s essential to be in good physical shape. If you are already on a fitness schedule, you are surely at an advantage. Otherwise, plan to start a fitness programme well in advance, focusing on cardio and a few strength training exercises. Consult a physical trainer or your tour operator before undertaking any such programme. You can also do some practise hikes in your local area to build up your stamina.

Remember that you will enjoy the trail and surroundings more when you are reasonably fit for a given trek.

Here is a starter for the beginners:

Physical Fitness

Check the list of things to carry :

This is a very important aspect so you are safe and comfortable on the mountains.

  • Your 3-layers of clothing (a must on the mountains above ~3000 m/10000 ft):
  • Sleeping bag (generally, it is included in the package by your tour operator, like we do in our treks)
  • Your trekking shoes or boots
  • A rucksack or a backpack with a raincover

You may buy, borrow, or rent a few items. On many easy treks, you can reuse the already existing ones that you have for a different purpose. Consult our article on renting vs. buying trekking gear before deciding on a particular item.

Do carry a personal first aid and general medicine kit.

There are other small yet essential things to pack. Check out our detailed list of things to carry on a Himalayan trek below:

List of things to carry on a Himalayan trek

Pack smart and light:

The key to backpacking is to pack all the essentials while keeping your pack light. You don’t want to carry unnecessary items that are heavy on you. We recommend that you invest in buying good quality items so that they serve you safely on the mountain in the long run. At the same time, these items are lighter in weight and known for their wider range of use in different types of situations and conditions.

How you should pack your backpack for trekking?

Budget your expenses:

Now comes the budget. Estimate based on the following major expenses:

  • Your tour package cost (which usually takes care of your accommodation, meals, trekking guide and support staff, camping equipment and logistics, permits and levies charged by the governing authorities, etc.)
  • Travelling to basecamp and returning home
  • Any other accommodation and meals outside the trek but which may be required during your travel
  • Purchasing or renting trekking gear
  • Any other personal expenses or some buffer expenses

Pro tip : Keep adequate cash on hand for any on the spot expenses and as a buffer. Online transactions can be very difficult in remote areas due to limited network connectivity.

Don’t jump into a trek at the last moment:

As you can see, there is quite a bit of planning ahead for your trek, so just don’t register or book a trek at the last moment. As a beginner, take your time, plan well in advance, and then get things arranged. There is always a next time, no matter how tempting if you could manage to join at the 11th hour. I is very likely that if you are very late to decide, you may remain unprepared and put yourself and your team at risk.

Trek Execution Phase: Follow these when you are actually on the trek

This is an equally important phase and deals with the dos and don’ts on the ground. To adjust yourself on a mountain, you need to focus on two key areas. One area is altitude and how you are coping with it physically following certain rules. Another area is being that how do you interact with the environment as a whole by following certain norms, decorums, or etiquette, whatever you like to call it.

Stay hydrated and enjoy your meals:

It is vital to drink enough water and fluids throughout the day to remain hydrated. Fill your water bottle(s) at a campsite and ask your guide about a possible opportunity to refill while you walk. Drinking water is collected from a stream or from a natural source. Avoid drinking water from unknown sources.

Remember that due to the cool or cold weather, you may not feel like drinking adequate water. This may directly lead to a muscle cramp or create other health problems on the mountain.

Eat sufficient food, which gives you much needed energy and nutrition to continue your trek. Ideally, you should eat at least the same amount you eat back at home. A fractional reduction can be due to the new conditions; however, a moderate loss of appetite is an early indicator of mountain sickness.

Acclimatise properly :

High altitude means less pressure, or thin air, and less oxygen to breathe. Acclimatisation refers to the physiological changes that occur when you arrive at a high altitude and allow the body to function properly in the low oxygen environment. E.g., your ear pops on a plane, which is the adjustment your body does due to the pressure difference.

It is recommended that you sleep inside the tree line for three nights before reaching a higher altitude. Usually tree line ends between 3300 to 3600 m (11,000 and 12,000 ft) depending on a region or particular route. A well thought-out itinerary will consider these factors and help you in the acclimatisation process.

If your body doesn’t acclimatise, you may notice sustained symptoms, which include headache, nausea, shortness of breath, and dizziness. difficulty sleeping, and the inability to exercise or move. These are signs of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) , although they are uncommon below 4000 m – 13000 ft. When someone is affeted by AMS, it is a must to bring the person as quickly as possible.

Avoid alcohol and smoking which seriously harm you on the mountain.

Pro tip : Cool down once you reach your campsite for the day. Don’t get inside the tent and rest immediately, even if you are feeling unwell. Rather, put on warm clothes, walk around a bit, chit chat with your fellow trekkers, sip a cup of tea, and enjoy and adjust to the environment.

Inform any irregular or uncomfortable physical condition to your trek guide:

Always inform your trek guide or leader about any discomfort rather than keeping it a secret. This may help to identify any altitude conditions and act accordingly.

Follow the instructions of your trek guide or leader:

This is self explanatory. Be it how you walk or manoeuvre on the trail or maintaining certain rules. They are experienced in these conditions and well aware of the situation. After all, your guide and support team are responsible for your well being on the mountains.

Start early and finish early:

A regular day on the trail can be quite different from your daily routine back home. During a trek, you wake up early to witness the sunrise views, get refreshed, and have your breakfast. Pack everything and be ready to start at the latest by 7:00 – 7:30 am.

If you start early, most likely you will reach your day’s destination on time and have plenty of time to explore the campsite in the afternoon. Similarly, you finish your dinner and call it a day early so that you get enough sleep.

Set your pace:

It is important to find the pace that suits you. Don’t walk too fast or too slowly, as either of these will make you tired. Keep walking at a slow but steady pace. Take short breaks to enjoy nature or to catch your breath.

Follow mountain manners and etiquettes

Mother nature likes good manners. Be modest and humble in the mountains. A smile goes a long way. Your flexibility to cope with and adjust according to the conditions is certainly a great advantage.

Work as a team on mountain:

Just remember the age-old saying, United we stand, divided we fall. Gel well with your team mates. Your team’s bonding plays a role here as well.

Respect local customs and traditions:

The Himalayas are a culturally diverse region, and it is important to respect local customs and traditions. Dress modestly, remove your shoes before entering temples or monasteries, and ask permission before photographing people.

Care for the environment, leave no footprints:

The Himalayas are a fragile ecosystem, and it’s important to respect and take care of the environment while trekking. This is the only way we can do our part to preserve this magnificent gift of nature for our future generations.

Strictly avoid littering, stick to the designated trails, and do not disturb the local flora and fauna. Don’t leave any of your non-biodegradable waste on the mountain; carry these items back and recycle or reuse them whenever possible.

REVIEWS FROM OUR CLIENTS

This was an awesome trip. Even if you’ve seen pictures of the Everest mountain range, up close and personal, it’s breathtaking!! Pictures can’t do them justice—a land of giants. The itinerary is incredibly well thought through—WT has this down pat through years of tuning and feedback.
The trip was masterfully designed. We had an absolute ball. Nepal is a beautiful country with wonderful people. The memories we took home will be cherished for a long time to come.
A wonderful trip! So much more than a chance to catch a photo of a snow leopard or tiger, this was the rare opportunity to really learn about these two cats, their environments, and the ongoing conservation efforts being made to save them.
Hiking to a local farm and meeting the family was a lovely experience, and attending the Paro festival was magical in its own way, adding to the sense of connecting more deeply with this country. The King happened to be there on our second day and mingling with the people, which was a learning experience in its own right.
The Trip Leader had great knowledge of the Everest region and strong relationships with the Sherpa people. This was a life-changing trip of a lifetime! The all-time best trip ever!
This is a great trip. I have the tremendous satisfaction of having completed a difficult physical trek as well as experiencing beautiful scenery and an interesting culture.
Because of our Trip Leader’s vast experience in the area, we used several trails that aren’t known to many trekkers and we were invited into Sherpa homes, which was wonderful. I had been dreaming of this trip for 30 years and now those dreams are fulfilled.
One of the best trips of my life: unbelievable scenery, wonderful organization, smoothly run. I had pretty high expectations going in, but it ended up even better than I’d hoped.

The Himalayas

10 of the Best Himalayan Treks

himalayan trekking trip

, by Charlie Boscoe

himalayan trekking trip

Everything about the Himalayas inspires superlatives: they're home to the world's highest mountain, the world's most beautiful mountain (which, by general consensus, is Ama Dablam), and every peak over 7000 meters (23,000 feet) on planet Earth. The Andes may cover a greater area, and the Alps might be more accessible, but no mountain range comes close to the Himalayas in terms of height or reputation.

The sheer scale of the Himalayas and their lack of infrastructure means that seeing every part of them is virtually impossible. There are hundreds of Himalayan peaks still awaiting a first ascent, and many of the valleys surrounding them have never been explored. Suffice it to say that, even with time, money, and motivation, you will visit only some parts of the Himalayas in one lifetime. Today, I'll give you some suggestions about where to start. I've done about a dozen Himalayan expeditions, so although I've only seen about 0.0001% of them, it does mean that I've got a reasonable idea of what a good Himalayan trek entails!

himalayan trekking trip

Some treks listed here are super popular, which can be a negative for some people, but if you want to visit the highest peaks of all - most of which lie in Nepal's Khumbu region - then you have to deal with having a bit of company! As I'll explain, it's pretty easy to escape busy Himalayan trails and find some solitude, but regardless - sharing a trail is a small price to pay for watching the sunrise over Mount Everest. Speaking of which...

1. Everest Base Camp Trail, Nepal

The most famous Himalayan trek of all to the highest mountain on Earth, this list of must-do hikes wouldn't be complete without the trip to Everest Base Camp. The scenery defies description, but if you go expecting classic Himalayan views, with deep green valleys giving way to impossibly huge, snowy peaks - you won't be disappointed. There is definitely more traffic on this route than on any others on this list, but it's incredible how a tiny detour of a few hundred meters can provide some solitude. Wander off in the evenings after dinner, and you'll soon find some peace.

The trek begins at the legendary Lukla airstrip, passes through the bustling Sherpa capital of Namche Bazaar and then leads you into the highest mountains on Earth. The combination of Sherpa culture, mind-altering vistas, and, of course, visiting the legendary spot from which Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay launched their trip to Everest's summit make this one of the finest treks on the planet.

2. K2 Base Camp Trek, Pakistan

Everest is the world's highest mountain, but K2 might be its hardest. It's less than a thousand feet lower than Everest but far more technical, not to mention dangerous. Even looking at K2 is intimidating, and it dominates the view as you approach it in a way that Everest (which is, ironically, hidden for much of the approach to it) doesn't. The mountain looks HUGE, steep and - frankly - scary, and the jagged peaks of the Karakoram surrounding it are only marginally less so.

I haven't been lucky enough to visit every mountain range on Earth, but those who've been to more than me say that the Karakoram are the most aesthetic peaks they've ever seen. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but there's no doubt that the trip up the Baltoro Glacier to the foot of K2 is one of the most incredible mountain journeys you could ever wish to experience.

3. Markha Valley, India

India isn't home to any of the fourteen 8000-meter peaks, and as such, it slightly slips under the radar of most aspiring Himalayan trekkers. Having made two trips to the Indian Himalayas, I can attest that the area is massively underrated and much quieter than most of the locations listed in this article. Sure, you're unlikely to see any famous mountains, but if you want massive, lonely vistas and remote peaks (many of which are unclimbed), the northern Indian region of Ladakh is well worth a look.

Stok Kangri is the most famous peak in Ladakh, sitting just over 6000 meters and easily accessed from Leh (the region's capital), but the 8-day trip through the Markha Valley is arguably the best trek in the area. It follows the Markha river for much of the trek and then climbs up to the Kongmaru La pass, at over 5000 meters, meaning that you get to experience the local flora and fauna in addition to seeing the barren high ground for which Ladakh is famous. In addition to the natural wonders, the Markha Valley is also a fascinating cultural region, with Buddhism infusing every part of life. Culture, views, flowers - what's not to like?!

himalayan trekking trip

4. Snowman Trek, Bhutan

One of the longest, most arduous, and most rewarding of the classic Himalayan treks, this is an epic journey through one of the world's least visited countries. This trek is so good that some veteran Himalayan trekkers describe it as "the best trail on Earth." I can't verify that one, but it's pretty exceptional!

The trek is over three weeks long and leads over eleven passes above 4500 meters, so it's not for the faint of heart! The reward for those with the fitness and motivation to complete it is to glimpse mountains that few people will ever see and visit areas like Lunana, which ranks as one of the least populated regions of the entire Himalayan chain.

5. Annapurna Sanctuary, Nepal

After the Khumbu region, Annapurna is the second most-visited part of Nepal, mainly because of the peak after which the area is named. Annapurna is "only" the 10th highest mountain in the world, but it's notoriously difficult and dangerous to climb, making it a highly-valued prize for those with the skills - and bravery - required to climb it. The peak's legendary status was cemented in 1950 when it was the first 8000er to be climbed. Maurice Herzog's book, "Annapurna," telling the story of the first ascent, is a classic piece of mountaineering literature, and its final words, "There are other Annapurnas in the lives of men," is one of the most iconic lines ever written in the genre.

The Annapurna region has two classic treks - the Sanctuary trek and the Circuit trek . As you might have guessed from the names, the Sanctuary route goes right into the heart of the Annapurna Cirque and leads you to the foot of the mountain's feared south face, while the circuit goes all the way around the Annapurna range. For me, the Sanctuary route is the better option, if for no other reason than because it gets you so close to the most awe-inspiring side of the peak. The views of Machupachare (the so-called "fishtail peak") aren't too bad either...

6. Manaslu Circuit, Nepal

Even a couple of decades ago, the Manaslu Circuit wasn't a popular trek, but it's become more famous as increasing numbers of hikers experience its rugged beauty for themselves. The trip takes you through a relatively wild and remote part of Nepal, and the route has a bit of everything, from views of Manaslu (8,156 m) itself to peaceful stretches along the Budi Gandaki River.

The Manaslu Circuit is also renowned for its exceptional cultural interest - the trek goes through areas that exhibit Nepali, Tibetan, and Hindu cultures and has - even by Nepalese standards - a LOT of prayer flags and mani stones (rocks or pebbles inscribed with the mantra of Avalokiteshvara - a form of prayer in Tibetan Buddhism). The combination of wilderness, fascinating culture, and truly epic Himalayan views have transformed this route into a classic.

7. Kashmir Great Lakes Trek, India

Understandably, most people travel to the Himalayas to see mountains, but on the Kashmir Great Lakes Trek, you also get - as you might have guessed - to see some fabulous lakes, too. The trek is relatively short at around a week, so this is one of the few Himalayan trips that doesn't require three or more weeks to complete.

The trip starts in Srinigar, one of India's most fascinating and unique towns, with its famous houseboats and remarkably diverse culture, mixing elements of many Central Asian traditions. Once on the trek, expect vast scenery, few people, and seven of the finest lakes you'll find anywhere on planet Earth! The trekking is strenuous at times, and despite the short length of the trip, it takes you high up - to 13,276ft/4191m to be exact - so take it seriously, and you're in for a treat.

himalayan trekking trip

8. Rakaposhi Base Camp Trek, Pakistan

Without question, the least known of the "base camp" treks on this list, the trip to Rakaposhi is ranked by those in the know as one of the best in Pakistan. The trip to Nanga Parbat base camp and the K2 base camp trip listed above are exceptional, but Rakaposhi is something entirely different. The mountain whose base camp you trek to is almost an 8000er - topping out at 7,788m/25,551 ft - but is virtually unknown to anyone beyond trekking connoisseurs due to those "missing" 112 meters. It's a beautiful peak that ought to be better known, but make the most of its relative obscurity and enjoy the solitude hiking towards it brings.

In addition to the epic scenery you'd expect on the trip, you'll also pass through lush meadows and deep valleys, making this a stunning and varied trek. Throw in the chance to experience the unique culture of the Gilgit-Baltistan region, and this is a trip with "can't miss" written all over it!

9. Mount Kailash Circuit, Tibet

Most people consider Himalayan trekking to be an almost spiritual experience, but for many of those attempting the Mount Kailash Circuit, it literally is. The mountain is considered holy by no less than four religions - Buddhism, Hinduism, Bon, and Jainism - and pilgrims come to trek this route all summer long.

The trek is relatively short, at 52km/32 miles, but it never passes below 4500 meters, so getting properly acclimatised before starting out is essential. As luck would have it, the trip is in Tibet, so you can spend a few days sightseeing in Lhasa (3,656 m/11,995 ft) before setting off for the mountains. Even the drive to the start of the trek is spectacular, and there's the option of stopping at the Rongbuk Monastery - the highest monastery in the world, which sits beneath the mighty north face of Everest - en route to the hike. Any trip that is considered a pilgrimage to billions of people and involves a side trip to Everest before you've even started hiking must be a good one!

10. The Great Himalayan Trail

I've saved the longest one 'til last! As it stands, the Great Himalayan Trail is 1,700 kilometers/1,100 miles long, which already makes it a beast of a trip, but there are plans afoot to extend it all the way from Nanga Parbat in Pakistan to Namche Barwa in Tibet, making it a mighty 4,500 kilometers/2,800 miles. Even in its current form, it's a monster of a trek and traverses the entire Nepalese Himalaya, with additional forays into India and Bhutan at each end of the hike.

Trying to describe the trek in any detail would be a long article, but just take a look at the route on the route's official website to get a taste of what to expect! The entire route has only been completed a few times, so if you get this ticked, you should tell some news outlets about your achievement!

A trip to the Himalayas is a once-in-a-lifetime experience for most trekkers, but as you've probably figured out by now - it really should be a ten-times-a-lifetime experience! Oh, to have endless time and money...

Here's a bit of inspiration until that lottery win comes along:

The trek (Annapurna Sanctuary) was 52km total, and Sherpa Trekking mapped it out perfectly in the itinerary. The weather was a bit severe in some parts, but thanks to the help of the guides, porters, and other support, I made it through safely. I was able to see the great Annapurna I, and it was breathtaking. The guides were very knowledgeable and gentle, and the accommodations and transportation were easy and convenient. The Proper Gear for Trekking the Himalaya

Everything Youl Need to Hike the Mountains of Nepal, Tibet, and Bhutan

himalayan trekking trip

 Chris VR / TripSavvy

Nepal is one of the most popular trekking destinations in the entire world, and for good reason. It is home to some of the best trails on the planet, including the spectacular Annapurna Circuit, and the very popular hike to Everest Base Camp . The truly adventurous might even take on the entire Great Himalaya Trail , which stretches for a mind-blowing 2800 miles through alpine settings that are unmatched by any other mountain range on the planet.

But before you go, you'll want to make sure you have the proper gear you'll need to stay safe and comfortable along the way. From selecting the right backpack to finding the best footwear and clothing, you'll want to decide exactly what you need to bring long before you ever leave for the Himalaya. Because once you there, finding good equipment can be challenging and costly, if it is even possible at all.

The following is a solid overview of the gear you'll want with you on any trek through Nepal , Tibet , or even Bhutan . And while there are other items that you might want to bring as well, these products serve are a good base to get you started on your journey.

Layered Clothing for Hiking the Himalayas

A proper layering system plays a big role when it comes to staying comfortable in a variety of weather conditions. Whether its warm and sunny or cold and rainy, having the proper layers means that you're always fully prepared. It also means you have a versatile wardrobe that can be used in virtually any situation, something that any traveler can appreciate.

When creating a good layering system everything starts with the base layer. These are the articles of clothing that sit closest to the skin and help wick away moisture to keep us dry and comfortable. Highly breathable and quick drying, most base layers are versatile enough to be worn on their own, or in conjunction with other clothing as well; be sure to bring both a top and bottom to keep you warm and dry.

There are a lot of options on the market to choose from, but we recommend Smartwool base layers  for all of your outdoor and travel adventures.

The middle layer of any layering system sits between the base and the outer shell and provides important insulation for warmth. The job of this insulating layer is to trap warm air closer to the body. to help maintain better warmth. Garments that are especially good at this are fleece pullovers or a down jacket, depending on the outside temperatures. Fleece works great on relatively cool days, while a thicker, warmer jacket is needed when things are colder. While hiking in the Himalaya, a proper mid-layer will definitely be a much-appreciated addition to your wardrobe, especially on colder days at higher altitudes.

In the early days of the trek carry an Outdoor Research Vigor fleece as an additional insulating later. But as you climb higher into the mountains, temperatures will drop considerably. That's when you'll want to have a down jacket with you in your backpack. Lightweight, highly packable, and extremely warm, down jackets are a mainstay in the mountaineering and trekking world. When the winds begin to howl and the snow starts to fly, you'll still stay warm and cozy in something like the Mountain Hardwear Ghost Whisperer jacket . No matter which down jacket you go with however, be sure to get one with waterproof down. It not only holds its loft better but continues to perform well in damp, cold conditions too. In the past, that was an issue with natural down, but it's no longer a concern with the hydrophobic versions.

The final layer you'll need to complete your system is a shell jacket, which provides protection from the wind and rain. This is the layer you'll want to have close at hand when the weather takes a turn for the worse and you're still caught out on the trail. Thinner and lighter in weight than a down jacket, a shell is built for active pursuits in the mountains. When paired with a layering system, it provides an outer defense that helps keep you warm and dry, even when things get particularly nasty. We recommend the Outdoor Research Interstellar jacket for use in environments where the weather can be wild and unpredictable.

The final piece of your wardrobe for any Himalayan adventure is a nice pair of trekking pants that are specifically designed for hiking and backpacking. These pants typically provide support in the knees and seat while allowing the wearer to walk unimpeded even through demanding environments. Pants like the Fjallraven Vidda Pro trousers  are built for trekking long distances and are meant to work as part of a layering system, allowing you to wear a base layer underneath if necessary.

Clothing Accessories for Hiking the Himalayas

From packing the right socks to bringing the right hat and gloves, the clothing accessories you pack for your trip along the Himalayan trails will greatly affect the comfort and ease of your journey. Here are a few suggestions for accessories you should pack to complete your wardrobe.

Most people don't put a lot of thought into their socks, but they are a key element to keeping your feet happy and healthy on a long trek. You'll want socks that are comfortable, breathable, and provide plenty of protection. Stick to merino wool, or something similar, such as the  Smartwool Hiking Socks  for the best all-around performance. Merino has the added benefit of being antimicrobial, which means it is odor resistant as well.

Speaking of footwear, the hiking trails in the Himalaya can be remote, rugged, and demanding; that's why you'll need a good pair of boots to help keep your feet, ankles, and legs well protected and feeling fresh. Light hiking shoes won't cut it in the big mountains, so invest in a pair of boots that are built for backpacking or mountaineering—we recommend the Lowa Renegade GTX  or something similar, as the boot provides excellent stability and protection for extended hikes in rugged environments.

Depending on which route you're trekking, and the weather you encounter along the way, you may need to carry two pairs of gloves with you. A lighter pair for keeping your hands warm when the weather begins to cool off—such as  The North Face Power Stretch Glove —and a thicker, more insulated pair for when temperatures really take a plunge. When that happens, go with the Outdoor Research Ascendant Sensor gloves . Conditions could include snow or freezing rain along the way as well, and a good pair of gloves will allow your hands to stay plenty warm when that happens.

You'll definitely want to carry a hat with you on your trek through the Himalaya, and quite possibly more than one. At lower altitudes, a wide-brimmed hat –– such as the Marmot Precip Safari Hat –– helps to keep the sun out of your face and eyes. When you go higher a warmer beanie stocking cap like the  Mountain Hardwear Power Stretch Beanie  may be in order. Either way, you'll be glad you have some protection for your head throughout the hike, as conditions can vary dramatically from one day to the next.

We would also recommend carrying  a Buff  with you not only on a trip like this one but pretty much anywhere you might happen to go. This versatile piece of headwear can serve as a headband, neck scarf, balaclava, facemask, and more. Available in a wide variety of prints, weights, and styles, you'll be glad you have one for your next adventure.

Outdoor Gear for Hiking the Himalayas

Finally, you'll want to make sure you travel with the proper hiking and camping gear so that you'll have a comfortable place to sleep on your travels and a bit easier time getting up the mountains in general.

Whether you are trekking independently or with guides, you'll want a comfortable backpack with plenty of storage capacity to carry all of your gear. During the day, you'll need easy access to extra layers of clothing, snacks, camera equipment, and various other items, and your pack will be key to carrying all of that equipment and more. Make sure that whichever pack you go with is hydration-ready, meaning it can hold a water reservoir that allows you to easily take a drink while out on the trail. The  Osprey Atmos 50 AG  is a great choice to meet all of these needs and more. Not only is it comfortable, it is a highly versatile pack that will serve you well on a wide variety of adventures across the Himalaya and beyond.

Most nights in the Himalaya will be spent staying in traditional Nepali teahouses or sometimes even tents, depending on the location. As the altitude increases, the nights will get colder, which means you'll need a good sleeping bag to help keep you warm and cozy as the mercury drops. That bag should have a temperature rating of at least 0 degrees Fahrenheit (-18 degree Celsius) or you'll run the risk of getting too cold. We suggest the Therm-a-rest Oberon , but if additional warmth is needed, you can augment the sleeping bag with a Sea to Summit Thermolite Reactor liner as well.

Trekking poles are essential for a long distance hike like the ones that you'll find in the Himalaya. They can provide stability and balance both while climbing higher on the trail and while descending back down. This can save a lot of wear and tear on your knees and hips, helping your legs to stay fresher throughout. Using these walking sticks can take a bit of getting used to, so practice with them before the trip so they start to feel natural in your hands. Out on the trail, trekking poles like the MSR Ascent Carbon Backcountry will quickly become your new best friend, helping you to scramble over rough terrain, navigate slick sections, and allowing you to maintain balance throughout the journey. Lightweight, durable, and comfortable to use, these carbon fiber poles won't break the bank either.

With the proper equipment in your pack, you'll stay warm, comfortable, and happy on your trek into one of the most spectacular settings found anywhere on Earth. Gear up and get going. The Himalaya are waiting.

How to Train for your Himalayan Trek

Andy Crisconi November 11, 2020 Himalayan Trekking Tours , Worldwide Hiking Tours

You may be asking yourself how you can properly train for a hike in the Himalayas if your neighborhood surroundings don’t have the same terrain or altitude. My advice? Don’t worry about it. After 25+ years of training people for adventure hikes, I’m confident you have everything you need to prepare for your One World Trekking Himalayan Adventure . Here’s a training process you can use to make sure you’ll have energy from the first day of your trek to the last day, along with the ability to recover easily while you rest with minimal to zero soreness.

himalayan trekking trip

  • Gradually increase stair walking until you reach 60 minutes. Climbing upstairs provides strength and endurance. Going downstairs bolsters a completely different kind of strength, which helps stability and self-assurance to descend Himalayan trails with confidence.
  • Gradually increase the incline on your treadmill each week until you can tolerate 45-60 minutes at a 15% incline. Although the treadmill is very different than climbing hills (we’ll discuss that at another time), it will still lengthen and strengthen your calves and Achilles tendons, as well as improve your cardio and leg endurance.
  • Over six-to-ten weeks, gradually work up to hiking or walking for 5 hours while wearing a pack that is heavier than the one you will carry on your trip. Walking for a long time – even if the terrain is not aggressive – will develop durability in your core and all of your lower body joints and muscles. Carrying more weight in your pack will develop a strength reserve so you have an abundance of energy each day of your trek.
  • Perform high intensity interval training (HIIT) on a stationary bike – preferably a non-weight bearing machine – or other cardiovascular training equipment that allow you to control variables such as resistance, speed and sometimes incline (i.e., elliptical, stepper). Warm up for 10 minutes and then perform 10 rounds of two minutes of very intense work (high heart rate, high respirations, and muscle burn) followed by a minute to a minute-and-a-half of rest. This type of training will push your limits and help your mental toughness necessary for high altitude trekking.
  • Perform heavy resistance training, selecting exercises such as walking lunges or kettlebell deadlifts, up to two times a week. If you are completing all of the above, then perform resistance training once a week. This will help develop the lower body strength you’ll need when stepping up on or off of high rocks. Your goal should be to perform each of the above activities at least once a week. You should be sure to add an active recovery day or two, such as walking at a leisurely stroll on easy terrain to make sure you don’t over train your body before your One World Trekking Adventure. Healthy travelers can handle any one of our trips with the right training. If you want discuss your current exercise program to ensure it is not missing critical training elements, contact Marcus Shapiro to discuss your training regimen at no cost to you .

My best flight to Everest region!

We did the best Everest helicopter landing tour with HST. This was really one of my first trips in the high Himalaya, I did with my child this Helicopter tour,  I was nervous about taking a helicopter tour to the Everest base camp with child, but the organizer HST team' helicopter staff and pilots were incredibly reassuring and put us at ease. The flight itself was incredibly smooth. Really amazing to land in Lukla – Phiriche – Kalapatthar & Everest view hotel, the scenes from the aerial view were marvelous, and the mountains looked like a work of art. It was inspiring to see the mountains up close and to experience the thrill of being so close to the world’s peak. This tour would be favor for who has short time in Kathmandu, This tour is a must-do for anyone traveling to Nepal, The real lifetime experience with reasonable cost with HST trek.

10/10 for Everest Base Camp trip guys!

In April 2019, our party of 12 from the UK were led on the trip of a lifetime for 12 days by Gokul and Narayan of Himalayan Scenery Treks and Expedition. I can't praise these amazing people enough for the adventure they took us on. I literally can't think of anything they could have done any better than they did for us. Every day they ensured we were all safe and together, and ensured we reached every point of our destination on time. They ensured we made the most of every moment and view, and experienced it to the maximum. They organised and ordered breakfast, lunch and dinner for us every. The checked our oxygen levels every day and made wise suggestions to ensure everyone's health was maintained. In addition to Gokul and Narayan, I must also thank the lovely team of porters that were employed by the trekking company. These guys carried our overnight bags up and down the mountain with a smile and made our trek so much easier because all we had to carry was a small backpack. Thanks again guys, we will recommend you without hesitation to anyone else looking for an Everest Base Camp Trek - or any Nepalese trek for that matter - they do many others too!

Not a holiday but a challenge!!!

Trekked to EBC. One of the hardest things I have ever done but also one of the most memorable. From start to finish the trip was amazing and well organised. Our guide was Narayan and I don't think we could have been given a better guide. He is knowledgeable and attentive. He cared about our wellbeing and regularly checked in with us to make sure we were acclimatising. He checked our oxygen every evening. He had the patience of a saint as I moaned constantly about everything from the cold, the food, the climb and feeling ill. On part of our trek he played some 80s music on his phone which boosted our morale during a 7 hour slog.  We were a group of 5 and we all got on splendidly and helped each other get to EBC.  For me the trek was a once in a lifetime adventure. Narayan and his counterpart Gopal made it so. I would very highly recommend them as guides!

Incredible Experience

Last January, I had a wonderful trekking experience in Nepal which became possible only via Himalayan Scenery Treks and Expedition. Everyone from this company is really helpful and friendly. In fact, what they care is just the comfortability and amusement of their tourists. They provide all the necessary stuff that a Trekker or a visitor would seek in order to make his/her vacation hilarious. I really enjoyed the service they provide. On top of that, they provide info and every minor details about the place that I traveled. In short, my tour went really memorable last New Year. I would recommend all the travelers to consult with this company if they are planning to visit Nepal and spend vacation there. Lastly, Nepal is really a beautiful country with mountains, lake forests and parks. I think everyone should make it a travel destination and learn about the diversity of this country.

Testimonial

Tommy Van Mellaert

Would the Annapurna Sanctuary indeed be as beautiful as they say? On a sunny December morning, my (customized) trek started towards ABC. Many stone steps, wonderful sunrises and sunsets, snow, ice, nice people, tasty dal bhat, and being surrounded by these snow-covered high peaks when you walk up to ABC. It is indeed as beautiful as they say. Thanks to the Himalayan leaders, my guide, and porter for making this possible.

Annapurna Sanctuary Trekking Nepal 17 Days

Jagat is the best person to organize any trip. Without him, I could never be had seen all the things I did or gone to all the places to. My trip started at Kathmandu and had the car to Sundarijal then we trekked to Chisapani stayed for 1 night then trek to Nagarkot then Dhulikhel for 1 night then trek to Namobuddha left there after 1 night on to Balthali. Then on to Painauti. After this back to Kathmandu. Just an amazing trip. I recommend this to anyone that wants to see places in Nepal.

Nepal: 10d Kathmandu Valley Trekking

In March 2018 my girlfriend and I did a trek in the Everest region to EBC and Kala Pattar. We were accompanied by super guide Toran whom I knew from my previous “Tumlingtar to Renyo La” trek in 2015. It keeps amazing me how Jagat, Toran, the porter go through great lengths to make the trek as pleasant as possible and how adequately they react when unforeseen events occur. Hence ‘Himalayan Leaders’ is a travel agency to be recommended! Namaste, Didier.

I've traveled to all 7 continents. Here are the most breathtaking places I've visited on each one.

  • I've traveled to all seven continents and have seen some unbelievably gorgeous places .
  • I'll never forget seeing the towering mountains in Alaska's Wrangell St.-Elias National Park.
  • From the aquamarine water to the animals, the Galápagos Islands are a breathtaking location.

Insider Today

Growing up in a small town in Montana, I only hoped for a day I could hop on a plane and see some of the sights I'd read about in my favorite books.

I certainly never believed I would travel to all seven continents.

But as I got older, I was fortunate enough to find a flexible career in travel and meet a husband who was just as interested in seeing the world as I was.

After visiting all seven continents, here are the most breathtaking places I've visited on each one.

Africa: The Sahara Desert

himalayan trekking trip

I love the Sahara Desert so much that I've visited it twice. Camping in the desert and seeing the Milky Way after stepping out of a Berber tent is a memory I'll never forget — every star seemed close enough to touch.

I felt as though I was in a time capsule after enjoying a night by a campfire with the sound of drums, eating traditional tagine (a Moroccan stew with couscous), and riding a camel to my tent.

Endless dunes and the ever-shifting landscape mean you're always experiencing something new, and every view is different than it was the day before.

Antarctica: The Antarctic Peninsula

himalayan trekking trip

Kayaking among blue icebergs and friendly penguins in the Antarctic Peninsula offered an experience that simply can't be replicated anywhere else.

The abundance of wildlife and scenery that can only be described as otherworldly made it one of my favorite destinations of all time.

Just when I thought the continent couldn't get any more beautiful, we rounded the corner on our ship to find a new, seemingly untouched corner with pristine glaciers and sleeping seals.

Cliffs and glaciers line the shores in monochromes of black and white, and it's almost impossible to take a bad photo of this barren land.

Asia: The Himalayas

himalayan trekking trip

There's something special about being at the top of the world. When my now-husband and I hiked up to Everest Base Camp — where climbers start their ascent up Mount Everest — we encountered impossibly high peaks and stunning scenery.

Not only was it a physical challenge, but it was an emotional one as well. Visiting Nepal has been a major highlight for me because of the beautiful scenery.

The mountains are unimaginably large, and just when you think you've seen the most beautiful view of the trek, another impossibly large peak looms above you.

Australia: Uluru

himalayan trekking trip

Compared to Australia's major cities , few people make it to the Australian Outback. In my opinion, however, it's the best part of the continent.

We took a bike trip around Uluru, which was an excellent way to get an idea of the scale and importance of this site, which is sacred to the Aboriginal people.

The most unforgettable part of our trip? The sunsets bathing this famous rock with shades of pink and purple. Along with the red dirt that the area is known for, Uluru looks like a scene made for a photograph.

Europe: Florence, Italy

himalayan trekking trip

I was fortunate enough to live in the Florence region of Italy for a year, and I didn't come close to exploring all of the gems this city has hidden away.

I would often pop into a random church to find works by Botticelli or Donatello, and I spent days wandering the streets in search of the perfect scoop of gelato.

Many evenings, I'd wander to Piazzale Michelangelo to catch a sunset view of the entire city from above. From that angle, Florence looked like a work of art itself as the colors of dusk spread over the buildings.

Florence ages like a bottle of fine Chianti — every time I return, I'm reminded of how special it is.

North America: Wrangell-St. Elias National Park

himalayan trekking trip

One park in Alaska that took me by surprise was Wrangell-St. Elias National Park. As someone who's visited 26 national parks to date, I had written this one off as a side stop on our road trip.

However, when I visited, I was in awe of the towering mountains, herds of caribou running throughout the tundra, and endless opportunities for photography.

The best way to see this ginormous landscape is from the air — I recommend taking a bush plane ride to get the full scope. Seeing the towering mountains covered in glacial ice is still one of my favorite memories I've made traveling.

South America: The Galápagos Islands

himalayan trekking trip

The Galápagos Islands are a must-see location for any animal lover. Once you arrive, you're basically guaranteed to see wildlife everywhere you look, whether it's on land, in the air, or underwater.

From hilarious boobies to playful sea lions and ancient tortoises, I got personal, one-on-one interactions with some of nature's most intriguing creatures.

Just be sure to stay at least 6 feet away from the animals at all times, as mandated by Galápagos National Park .

Combined with aquamarine water, rugged coasts, and surprisingly beautiful beaches, the Galápagos Islands are a place you need to see to believe.
