The Man — Jamie Dornan

Jamie Dornan stars as The Man in The Tourist , an amnesiac trying to discover the truth about his past. In a terrifying twist of events along the way, he realizes there is somebody out there who wants him dead but why?

Dornan rose to fame by playing Christian Grey in the Fifty Shades of Grey film franchise and Sheriff Graham Humbert in Once Upon a Time.

He is also well known for playing killer Paul Spector in BBC 's The Fall and most recently, he starred as Pa, in Kenneth Branagh's Oscar-nominated film, Belfast, and as Edgar in Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar.

Constable Helen Chambers — Danielle Macdonald

Danielle Macdonald portrays Probationary Constable Helen Chambers in The Tourist.

She is a police officer assigned to The Man's case but quickly finds herself becoming consumed by his mystery and getting to the bottom of who he really is.

Speaking to Newsweek and other outlets about the character Helen, writer Jack Williams shared: "She's very believable, very relatable and you feel very warm. You just want her, this character to realize herself to be a better version of herself and I think Danielle brings that amazing relatability and warmth."

Macdonald, who is Australian but lives in the U.S. gets to use her native accent in the show, which may stun viewers who know Macdonald best as New Jersey rapper in Patti Cake$ and Texas-born Willowdean in Dumplin'.

Her other well-known credits include Bird Box, Unbelievable, and Lady Bird.

Luci Miller — Shalom Brune-Franklin

Actress Shalom Brune-Franklin stars as Luci Miller, who has an unexpected connection to The Man and a very dark past.

Speaking to Newsweek and other outlets about her character, Brune-Franklin said: "She's a waitress. There's a really interesting dynamic going on between the two of them whilst Jamie's character is sort of trying to unveil the truth, she is maybe trying to hide it."

Brune-Franklin is an English-born Australian actress, best known for playing Private Maisie Richards in Our Girl and Aoife in Doctor Doctor.

The twist-laden, action-packed, darkly comic drama follows The Man, a Brit, who has ended up Down Under and finds himself being chased by a massive truck, which is attempting to drive him off the road.

Meanwhile Ólafur Darri Ólafsson ( Trapped, The Missing ) also appears as Billy Nixon, an American who gets embroiled in the case, and Alex Dimitriades ( The End, The Cry ) is Kosta Panigiris, a wealthy but shady businessman.

Yes! The action-packed teaser features explosions, helicopters and guns. It begins with The Man driving along in the Outback singing to the radio before a truck shockingly crashes into him. As he later sits sipping a beer he muses, "Why would somebody want me dead?" We then get glimpses of several other characters including an anxious-looking Helen and Luci before we see The Man lying in his hospital bed suffering from amnesia and the ominous words What He Doesn't Know Could Kill Him are emblazoned on the screen.

With 20 years of experience, MacNeill is an Irish actor who has appeared in several high-profile projects, including City of Ember, Artemis Fowl, 101 Dalmation Street, No Offence, The Sixth Commandment, and more. The Tourist is likely about to become one of the next big hit shows on Netflix when it starts streaming in February . The first season will debut on February 1 followed by the second season on February 29 , marking the first time that season 2 will be available to watch in America and many other countries around the world. Max previously carried the show, but has chosen to dump it, so Netflix swept in and picked up international distribution rights for the BBC One series.

Jamie Dornan is the leading star and character in the show, but The Tourist features a very talented supporting cast. Get to know everyone below.

Jamie Dornan as The Man

Jamie Dornan stars in The Tourist and plays the leading character, who we'll refer to as " The Man ," for the sake of spoilers. You'll learn about who he really is as you watch the show, but it's the core mystery so we don't want to ruin it for you before you even begin!

Dornan's biggest claim to fame so far is probably playing Christian Grey in the Fifty Shades of Grey franchise alongside Dakota Johnson, but since then he has really diversified his resume with lots of exciting projects ranging from serious dramas to action to comedy and everything in between. She also starred as Estella in the BBC One adaptation of Great Expectations and will next appear in the Max series Dune: Prophecy .

Danielle Macdonald as Helen Chambers

Danielle Macdonald is another Aussie native starring in the series as Constable Helen Chambers. It doesn't take long for Helen to cross paths with The Man, which causes strain in her relationship as her fiancé seems to lament her working and would rather her stay home and spend time with him. Macdonald's most notable roles outside of The Tourist include the drama film Patti Cake$ and the Netflix Originals Unbelievable , Dumplin' , and Bird Box . Speaking of Helen and her fiancé, comedian Greg Larsen actually plays her significant other Ethan Krum. Like the majority of the cast, Greg is an Australian and he has a background in acting, writing, and comedy. He has won several awards for his stand-up comedy routines, particularly at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival. The Tourist is his most notable acting role to date.

HBO Max continues stealth drops of some of the best drama mini-series on television. Last year highlights included “The Head” and “ Station Eleven ,” and they start 2022 strongly with the fantastic “The Tourist,” a twisty tale that plays like an Aussie version of “ Fargo .” With sharp dialogue, clever plotting, and career-best work from Jamie Dornan and Danielle Macdonald , this is a great little thriller, a show that constantly keeps you guessing and entertained in equal measure.

The “ Belfast ” and “ Fifty Shades of Grey ” star plays an unnamed man (at least for a while) who is driving through the very remote Australian outback. He stops at a station to use the bathroom, banters with the guy behind the counter, and hits the road again. Looking in the rearview mirror, he sees a truck gaining on him with remarkable speed. The Man twists off the road to avoid it and the trucker follows, revealing through a POV from his cab that this is very intentional—he’s trying to kill this tourist. They race through the desert until The Man’s car crashes. He wakes up in a hospital with no memory of who he is or how he got there.

Enter a small-town officer named Helen Chambers (Macdonald), engaged to an awful man named Ethan ( Greg Larsen ) and thrust into a mystery about who this handsome Irishman is in a hospital bed. When The Man finds a note with a time and a location in his pocket, he heads to a small town called Burnt Ridge, where he meets a woman named Luci ( Shalom Brune-Franklin ) who might know about his past, ends up crossing paths with a sociopath ( Ólafur Darri Ólafsson ) who clearly wants him dead, and gets a phone call from a man who’s been buried underground. And then things get even weirder.

Created by the people behind the excellent “ The Missing ” (which aired stateside on Starz), the writing on “The Tourist” is a metronomic back and forth between reveals and how those reveals propel the narrative in a new direction. Pushing their way through all the chaos are Dornan and Macdonald, both phenomenal. Dornan finds a quirky, unsettled way to play a man who doesn’t know who he is without resorting to the cliché of the lost soul. If anything, he leans into more of a blank slate interpretation of amnesia, playing a guy who’s more open to what comes next because he can’t remember what came before. And Macdonald is charming and so incredibly likable that she becomes the heart of a show that can be cold at times.

Echoes of “ Memento ” and “Fargo” aside, “The Tourist” also has its own quirky personality. Some of those quirks get a bit extreme in late-season episodes in ways I can’t spoil, but the show is never boring. It’s a reminder that the Dornan who was so great in “ The Fall ” is still out there, and I hope it leads him to more bizarre, challenging roles like this one. There’s an argument to be made that there’s an even-better 100-minute movie in this six-episode mini-series, but that’s not the world we’re in right now. A story like this has a better chance to be told in the TV system than the mid-budget film one, and the writers don’t drag their feet or spin their wheels like so many streaming thrillers. They’re constantly moving our hero forward, keeping us uncertain about his past and even his moral center.

Some will argue that “The Tourist” gets too convoluted and I’ll admit that I enjoyed the playful uncertainty of the first half of the season more than the intensity of the second half. Although the show does get deeper in how it unpacks lies we tell ourselves and those we listen to from other people. It turns out that everyone on "The Tourist" has a secret or two, and almost all of them could use a car accident to reset the hole they've dug for themselves. 

I'm not sure how intentional it is but the show never stopped reminding me of some of my favorite early Coen films—the noir danger of “ Blood Simple ,” the open roads of “ Raising Arizona ” (and a bearded hunter who seems unkillable), Macdonald’s very Marge Gunderson character—and yet these nods to greats are embedded in a breakneck plot that never slows down enough to distract from its own inspired storytelling. Take the trip.

Shots flip between Margaret's perspective, where the demons are tangible and can be seen attacking her, and shots from the perspective of onlookers where Margaret appears to be fighting invisIble forces. Working with Father Brennan, Margaret starts to get to the root of her demons and why she has such shocking visions — and eventually gives birth to the Antichrist that had symbolically been growing inside her and causing such discomfort.

The First Omen feels different from any other movie in the franchise . There is the obvious omission of Damien, who was an important figure in the movies prior to this one. It means the events are less easy to explain as an audience. Even though the presence of the Antichrist seems to linger, he is not a physical being, so his actions are harder to rationalize. When members of the church appear to be possessed by an inexplicable force, there is not the simple explanation that it is Damien's doing — instead, the force feels much greater and more threatening. This exploration of the darker forces within the church feels much grittier and more graphic , particularly in the use of body horror. Right from the off-set, The First Omen shows a frantic Father Brennan questioning Father Harris ( Charles Dance ) about his concerns about conspiracies within the church. Following the topic of the occult, Father Harris is hit by a falling pipe. At first, he appears fine, but Dance turns around to show a huge hole in the back of his head. It is jolting and gory, immediately setting the tone of The First Omen .

As Margaret travels to the orphanage in Rome, the graphic body horror continues and knits a thread through the whole movie. Stevenson varies the way she utilizes body horror, so it doesn't feel like it is done simply for shock value but instead with intention. One of the first things Margaret encounters is a woman giving birth, which Cardinal Lawrence comments is a shocking sight to anyone who hasn't seen it before. Here, body horror is used to show the brutality of birth, a theme that returns later, but acknowledges it as natural and something that women have always gone through.

As the movie continues, Margaret finds friendship with an outcasted member of the church, a young orphan named Carlita ( Nicole Sorace ). When Carlita shows a drawing of a pregnant woman being restrained to another nun at the orphanage, Anjelica ( Ishtar Currie-Wilson ), Anjelica sets herself on fire and hangs herself. Here the body horror is immediate and intense. The way Anjelica acts is shown to be unnatural and controlled by an inexplicable force. The First Omen uses body horror in different ways to evoke different emotions out of its audience .

Nell Tiger Free's Physical Performance in 'The First Omen' Is Inspired by 'Possession'

For all the visceral imagery of The First Omen , the movie owes a lot of its success to the physical performance of Nell Tiger Free. Throughout the runtime, she portrays the way her inner demons are tormenting her so viciously in the way she contorts her body. She noted that Isabelle Adjani's performance in Possession was a source of inspiration for her. Possession follows the breakdown of a marriage between Adjani's Anna and her husband Mark ( Sam Neill ). The two become increasingly unhinged as they descend into madness, with the movie exploring the way the mind can unravel in the face of trauma. At first, it appears that the reason Anna wants a divorce is due to her infidelity; however, as Mark uncovers the truth, the movie quickly becomes shocking, violent, and gory.

This is most present in the movie's most famous scene, and the moment that Adjani is at her most frightening . The scene sees Anna screaming as she miscarries in an abandoned subway, with fluid draining from her body. It is so visceral and striking because the setting is so empty and vast with a continuous passage devoid of people only filled by Adjani's cries for salvation. As she squirms with pain and discomfort, it is apparent she is not only physically alone, but mentally isolated. Nell Tiger Free's interpretation of this performance is clear in The First Omen, but particularly during an extended sequence at the climax of the film when Margaret appears to be fighting an unseen force, convulsing and contorting her body unnaturally. However, the setting flips as the empty tunnel is replaced with a crowded square, meaning when Margaret's calls for help aren't heard, the isolation feels different. Margaret is dealing with inner demons in a busy place — she is surrounded by people, but she can't find support from any of them. It emulates Margaret's emotional isolation , the rigidity of expectation around her and fear of the consequences of stepping out of line.

'The First Omen' and 'Possession' Show the Darker Side of Pregnancy

Both Possession and The First Omen examine motherhood from a much darker lens , and the strain of unwanted pregnancy. Adjani and Free both show women who feel alienation towards birth in their brutal and grotesque portrayals of it and the strain it has on both women. In Possession, this is done through the miscarriage scene, where Adjani is going through the experience alone and is totally helpless in the situation. The movie was so graphic in this portrayal, that it faced huge editorial cuts to allow it to be shown to audiences . However, in The First Omen , once it is revealed that Margaret is the mother of the Antichrist, she is taken to a dimly lit room and gives birth in front of a large audience. This echoes her earlier trauma, where she was never physically alone but those around her weren't there for support. As she gives birth, the members of the church take care of her baby, knowing it is the Antichrist, but are extremely dismissive of Margaret and the clear physical exhaustion the birth is having on her body.

The First Omen 's climax showcases a reluctant mother, and the physical and emotional trauma of her pregnancy. However, unlike her character, Nell Tiger Free described the ability to push her acting in this way as liberating and cathartic , emulating the sense of release Margaret felt after giving birth. The movie shows that after the main events of the runtime, Margaret has managed to move on with her other baby she birthed that day and seems less troubled by her demons. It further heightens the strain the growth of the Antichrist inside her had on her. Free used the physical characteristics of Adjani's performance in Possession and gave an unsettling yet sympathetic performance in The First Omen .

Then there's the 1999 classic "The Talented Mr. Ripley," which is based on the 1955 Patricia Highsmith novel of the same name about a con artist who goes to some extreme measures to live the life he's always wanted. The movie, which came out 25 years ago, has newfound attention thanks to a new black-and-white limited series on Netflix that adapts the same source material and is getting rave reviews .

If you prefer to get your thrills in galaxies far, far away, there are also plenty of high-action sci-fi and superhero flicks on the list. Two chapters of the "Planet of the Apes" franchise have cracked the top 20 as we close in on the release of the latest installment, "Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes," which comes out May 10. And two alternative superhero films—"Glass" (2019) and "Unbreakable" (2020)—from a series directed by M. Night Shyamalan also make appearances this week.
