New USF degree aims to address shortage of school psychologists

  • Divya Kumar Times staff

Editor’s note: This story includes discussion of suicide. If you or someone you know is considering suicide, resources are available to help. Please see the information at the end of this story.

The University of South Florida plans to launch a three-year degree program in the fall to help address a national shortage of school psychologists.

The program will be based in USF’s College of Education, which for decades has trained school psychologists in its Department of Curriculum, Instruction and Learning. The subject was offered as an area of concentration, but graduates sometimes faced questions from employers about their credentials and applicants faced various obstacles to admissions, said Evan Dart, an education professor and school psychologist who designed the proposal for a separate degree.

“We feel compelled to address the shortage because the benefits that school psychologists can provide in terms of students’ academic, mental and behavioral health are just kind of unparalleled,” he said. “We’re required to wear a lot of different hats and be experts on a lot of different subjects.”

The National Association of School Psychologists’ ideal ratio of school psychologists to students is 1 to 500, but across the country it’s about 1 to 1,127. Florida has one school psychologist for every 1,856 students, according to a recent presentation before USF’s board of trustees.

Dart said the job of a school psychologist goes beyond what school counselors or school social workers do. While traditionally they’ve been viewed as professionals who assess students for special education needs, USF takes a more proactive and progressive view of the role, he said.

The university sees school psychologists as “change agents at the school district or even state level to improve student functioning in the areas of academics, behavior, mental health,” Dart said. “We do a lot of family-school collaboration. We do a lot of crisis prevention and school safety work.”

The National Center for Education Statistics reported in 2022 that 69% of public schools saw an increase in the percentage of students seeking mental health services at school since the start of the pandemic. Seventy-six percent of schools saw an increase in staff who were concerned about students “exhibiting symptoms such as depression, anxiety, and trauma,” the center said.

A survey by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that 42% of high school students “experienced persistent feelings of sadness or hopelessness” in 2021 — up from 28% in 2011. The survey also reported increases in the percentage of students who considered, attempted or made a plan to commit suicide.

“Youth with poor mental health may struggle with school and grades , decision making, and their health,” the agency said, adding that it helps when schools and parents “create protective relationships with students.”

Dart said the school psychologist shortage is multifaceted.

“I think we see a bottleneck at the point of training,” he said. “There’s an issue of training programs not being able to produce really high-quality school psychologists at the level they would be needed to fully address the shortage. But then on the other side, it’s school districts possibly not having the resources to hire as many school psychologists as they would like.”

Locally, he said, USF has worked well with school districts in Pasco, Pinellas and Hillsborough counties, where students often earn their practicum.

Jonathan Chasin, Pasco County’s supervisor for school psychology services, said the district welcomes USF students.

“The need is great,” he said. “COVID was eye-opening for a lot of reasons. We have a lot of students with a lot of needs.”

College of Education Dean Anthony Rolle told members of USF’s board of trustees that those in the role can expect to earn between $75,000 and $90,000 a year, with an average of $86,000 a year. Dart said graduates can expect to move anywhere in the country and be able to find a job.

“We’re excited about the thing that we’re doing,” he said. “We think it’s progressive, and really producing trainees who are going to be the next generation of school psychologists.”

  • Searching strategically
  • Choosing and Evaluating Resources

Identifying keywords can help you search for resources. A keyword can help narrow or broaden your result. You need to think of different ways that someone might describe the topic you are researching.

Keeping a list of keywords you are using or have used can help with your research.

Limiters, truncation and phrases

Databases are only as smart as the information you give them. These words used in your search can help you find more helpful resources:

  • Narrows your results, tells database that all search terms must be present
  • AND is often implied between each word
  • example: College AND Cost AND Textbooks
  • Broadens your results, tells database to search any of the terms you put
  • connects items
  • example: College OR Money OR Textbooks
  • Narrows your results, tells databases to ignore resources using certain words or phrases
  • excludes words
  • example: College NOT Textbooks

You can search for part of a word. This is great for root words that have multiple endings. It depends on the database but most use the * symbol

  • examples: Child* = children, child, childhood
  • Some databases recognize phrases without you doing anything, others don't. Generally you use quotation marks to signify its a phrase.
  • ex: Animal AND Protection vs. "Animal Protection"
  • these two different searches will get you very different results

Pro-Palestinian Protesters Harass Indiana GOP Rep. Jim Banks At Campus Event

R epublican Rep. Jim Banks of Indiana and the conservative influencer behind the “Libs of TikTok” account on X faced harassment from pro-Palestinian protesters at an event Monday.

Banks and Chaya Raichik were the featured guests at a pizza lunch hosted by the College Republicans of Indiana University at Bloomington, and the event proceeded despite threats from Antifa, according to a post on X by the group. Video of the event shows protesters shouting at Banks and Raichik, accusing the congressman of “killing children.”

“Despite numerous attempts to SHUT DOWN the event, College Republicans SUCCESSFULLY hosted Jim Banks and Chaya Raichik today!” the group posted on X.

https://twitter.com/carlinyoder/status/1774865642274877646

“Jim Banks has killed children!” one protester shouted in a video provided to the Daily Caller News Foundation.

“You’re a traitor to the working class!” the protester shouted in another video as a police officer intervened. “You are killing children.”

“These radical, anti-American activists have the right to free speech even if they hate the country that allows them that right,” Banks said in a statement provided to the DCNF. “We won’t be intimidated.”

Raichik had reported about the threats in a post on the Libs of TikTok account Monday, including a screenshot of a post on social media from a pro-Palestinian group at Indiana University. A local Antifa chapter called for the event to be targeted, telling followers “you know what to do,” the Post-Millenial reported .

Raichik earlier trolled the FBI’s Indianapolis field office about the threats in a post on the Libs of TikTok account.

“@FBIIndianapolis Antifa is threatening me and a sitting congressman @Jim_Banks,” she posted . “When you’re done chasing down grandmas who waived American flags on Jan 6th, can you please look into this?”

Banks also defied the threats before the event. “Antifa is not happy that I will be joining @libsoftiktok founder @ChayaRaichik10 today at Indiana University. They called us ‘far right bigots’ and have called for violence against us,” Banks posted. “My message to Antifa is simple: we will not be intimidated and the event will go on.”

Freshman Dorm Set Ups, Views, and Tour!

Discussing some of the other dorms on campus! They look and are set up exactly like Vaughn, essentially!

The following is an computer-generated summary of the video transcript.

So I kind of want talk to you guys about some other freshman dorms we have on campus. Another freshman dorm we have is more sahni and we're Sahni is set up a little bit differently. So you walk in and you have your common areas like the living room with a couch, share everything, and then you have your bathroom and then you have two doubles, so you're sharing. It's kind of like an apartment style minus the kitchen. The dorms are about the size of this little bit smaller because it was a double. It's They're probably the most convenient for freshman students just because that is where dining halls are also housed. Important thing is, we have our library textbooks bookstore where you can get your textbooks and everything. We have computer labs all over campus, but there's one in Bonn. That's like your typical dorm like bond. Except it's two triples with the bathroom connected in the middle. You won't ever live with the opposite sex unless it's something that you decide to put on your application. Eso you'll always be housed with female of your female guy. The person living next door to you on the other side of the wall could be, you know, the opposite sex. It was besides Paul Apartments, which is an upperclassman dorm. It is like the most recently renovated freshman dorm. For bedrooms, it's double double with a bathroom in the middle, you get a view of the river. It's absolutely beautiful, is my most favorite thing. There are only two floors, so it is a small dorm room. We have a whole bunch of palm trees, which is really nice on. Then the other one is smiling, which is like McKay small. You got your two doubles and the bathroom in the middle, and those are the freshmen dorms that we have here.
