Solo Travelers on Princess

Cool Cruiser

I was wondering about other solo travelers' experiences on Princess. I went on my first cruise last year with HAL and had a great time. There was a solo travelers luncheon the day after embarkation and I met several other widows traveling solo.

I'm booked on my first Princess cruise on the Sapphire in April and wondered if Princess does anything for solo travelers?

Also, I was charged 200% for this cruise and wondered if the solo supplement on Princess is always 200% or does it change from cruise to cruise depending on demand? (My HAL cruise I was charged 150%, but I've heard so much about Princess from my parents, that I decided I wanted to try a Princess cruise despite the higher solo supplement.)

Any words of wisdom from other Princess solo travelers?

I did two solo cruises last year, on the Caribbean and Crown Princess ships, and had a blast. Paid 200% for my room, so I waited until the prices dropped veddy veddy low before I booked. There was nothing special for single travelers, but I had no trouble meeting and mingling with people (especially at Crooners Bar). I have found that people are much more friendlier to you and interested in talking to you when you're alone, so it's easy to strike up conversations. Have a blast!!!

I have been on two solo Princess cruises. I think Princess makes it so easy and comfy for the solo person. They do have a solo meet and greet usually on the first seaday. (I haven't been). Princess charges anywhere from 150-200%. I have never felt uncomfy being alone. Fellow passengers are usually intrigued when they find out I am solo. For dinner my TA books a 10 person because she says "I play well with others." LOL One thing about Princess is their passengers are usually a bit older than some of the cruise lines and I think that really helps. I think you will like traveling solo on Princess.

I've traveled solo on Princess. Most ships do have a singles meet & greet, but I've never gone. I recommend that you sign up for the Cruise Critic roll call for your cruise. You will meet a lot of people there before you leave. The roll call usually has, at minimum, a meet & greet and then sometimes they plan other activities. I've met some really wonderful people from roll calls. I've always been treated well by Princess. I've paid anywhere from 130% to 200% for a cabin. Prices depend on the time of year and what category you choose. If you want a balcony you'll almost always pay 200%. If you cruise in the low season and choose an inside cabin you may get a much better deal. I've often gotten the best deals in November on the Caribbean routes with an inside cabin (hurricane season). Now, I'm kind of spoiled and want a balcony, so I end up paying more.

I am currently cruising solo on the Sapphire - I love it - did a 28 day solo last Nov. Plenty to do, there are single get-togethers (I never go tho' so don't know how they are), eating options work well, never feel uncomfortable in bars or dining rooms.

I usually pay about 160% fare, (obstructed OV)- just avoid holiday (fare will be 200%) and seven day cruises (waaay too many children) - longer cruises off season are so much more relaxing.

If you want to meet people (which doesn't interest me) your best bet by far is to be active in the roll call before you embark.

I am an elderly widow and I travel alone because my friends either have many medical problems or cannot afford the long single rate cruises that I take.Love my own cabin:)

My feelings are that I love to travel and see the way that others live.Love the sea and seeing things in this world that I never see at home. The employees mostly are all so wonderful to me .Have always felt safe on the ship and comfy. Most times I have delightful table mates usually couples.

Princess does cater mostly for couples after all I can understand it from their revenue point of view for their revenue returns.

All the cruises I have been on there is just a very small percentage of solos on the longer trips...Have found that if I wont to chat with folks one of the best places is at the speciality coffee area were I have had some very interesting conversations.

Would I ever decide not to cruise because I travel solo? That is the least worry on my mind when I set foot on board....:D

Even though I usually travel with friends, I cruise solo in a cabin and have for years. I go my own way and meet up for dinner. Pricing for a single in a cabin ranges from 150-180% for an inside or oceanview to 200% for a balcony, mini-suite or suite.

I join the roll call and have met many people that way. I've been to the singles meet-up a couple of times but don't any more. It's not Princess' fault but the first singles get-together I went to had just a couple of drooling old men. Literally. The second time, there were several people looking for bedmates (to put it politely) for the cruise. The roll call meet & greet is far better and sufficient since I really just want to meet people.

I've cruised completely solo and had a great time. People are generally friendly and inclusive.

Thats the reason why I never go to the singles meeting. There are a few desperate to meet a mate...They make me feel uncomfortable.

Like you thats all I wont to do just meet and have pleasant conversations with folks...:)

If you book late, the prices are often 200% for insides and outsides also. Though, sometimes it is cheaper then booking early and paying only 150%. Percentages isn't everything - look at the bottom line.

I've sailed solo on 4 cruises on Carnival & HAL. I will be sailing solo in May on Princess. I found prices can vary and it also is based on itinerary and port of embarkation. 200% of $600 fare is a lot easier to handle then 200% for a $!,000 fare. That being said, I enjoy sailing solo, and also with my girlfriend-for different reasons. I find I can relax better, and get to do everything I want when I go alone, but, being able to share an experience is very nice too.

As with others I frequently travel solo/ have my own cabin. In 2009 Princess started giving solo passengers 2 cruise credits/cruise when you have your own cabin. None of the other cruise lines that I've cruised solo on (NCL, Royal Carib, HAL, Costa) have this type of arrangement.

So I think gradually cruise lines are realizing the economic value of solo cruisers.

Happy cruising.

3,000+ Club

I sailed solo on the Ruby last month and had a great time. I didn't attend any of the singles/solos get togethers but they did have them.

I met some really nice people the first evening, watching the Packers game on MUTS and I ended up watching the game the following Saturday with them as well. I had a late seating table for 8 and this was the biggest disappointment - only two other people showed up all week. They were a nice older couple but I would have preferred to have a completely full table.

I think I paid around 170% for the single supplement, not too bad and I got two cruise credits for the cruise. I had an "obstructed" ocean view that had almost no obstruction and found it to be much more roomy than the ocean views on Royal Caribbean.

The crew was super friendly. I'd met a few of the senior crew at the CC meet & mingle the first day and after that, the Maitre d' was like my best friend. I also made friends with one of the bar supervisors and found free glasses of wine finding their way to my dinner table :D

I loved Princess and as you can see from my signature, I've booked three more cruises with them. Two will be solo and one with my Mom.

I sailed solo on CB in December and thoroughly enjoyed myself. There were two solo meet and greets early in the cruise, but I did not attend as they conflicted with other things I wanted to do.

The roll call and meet and greet on board the ship was the best way that I met people. I asked the Maitre D to move me to a table for 8, which he did and I had great table mates.

I am not the most outgoing person and I had no problem meeting great people on the ship and on excursions.

I would have no hesitation to go solo on Princess again.

You didn't exactly sail alone cdamion, you had all of us CCers along with you ;)
pam - I want to know which single events you've been to! the ones I've gone to had maybe one guy(and he brought a date!) but the free champagne more than made up for the dearth of members of the opposite sex!

I travel solo all the time.

It "irks" me that I can't take as many

cruises as I want due to the fact that

I have to pay based on double occupancy.

I never understood why the cruise lines

can't offer lower fares for singles.

Even if they can't offer lower fares, why

not give us 2 cruise credits for booking

single at a double occupancy price.

I am always with friends so I don't feel

They do. And you get three credits if you book solo in a suite. Sweet.

Can't be. The number of cruises I have

sailed solo is the same number reflected

on my Captains Circle membership.

Noooooo. Can't be. The number of cruises I have sailed solo is the same number reflected on my Captains Circle membership.

My apologies to you both.

Looks like they changed the policy

after 2006 as my credits went from

1 per sailing to 2.

So these credits go towards moving

up the status levels, correct?

So I can get to Elite much faster as

a single cruiser than I would a couple?

No apologies necessary. They only just changed the procedure in fall 2009, if I recall correctly. So yes, now we solos now catapult up to Elite twice as fast, which is some small consolation for the excruciating 200% single supplement!

Launched in 2010, Norwegian Epic was the first cruise ship in the industry to feature studio accommodations for solo travelers. These cabins, at an average size of 100 square feet, are designed and priced with the solo traveler in mind. They have no single supplements – and studio rooms on board Norwegian Bliss even boast virtual windows.

MSC Cruises offers interior and balcony solo cabins for single cruisers on its Meraviglia-class ships: the MSC Meraviglia, Bellissima, Grandiosa, Virtuosa and the newest vessel in the fleet, MSC Euribia. The second-newest ship, MSC World Europa, has 28 cabins – 10 Studio Interior and 18 Studio Ocean View staterooms – designed specifically for solo travelers. MSC World America, set to debut in 2025, will also feature the solo studio staterooms.

During voyages with MSC Cruises , single cruisers are invited to a complimentary, hosted cocktail party to mix and mingle with other solo travelers. The daily program is also an excellent source to discover additional activities, entertainment and opportunities to meet other cruisers. You'll have onboard special events like the themed 70s-inspired Flower Party and the White Party, where the ship is decked out in festive white decor and guests don their best white attire. In addition, there are various sports tournaments, or you can show off your culinary expertise during a MasterChef competition.

MSC's Caribbean and Bahamas cruises departing from Miami and New York City feature an overnight visit to Ocean Cay, the line's private island and marine reserve. While there, singles can participate in fun-filled evening activities like a Champagne Sunset Cruise or a glow paddleboarding excursion in the lagoon, then attend the lively Luna Libre Party and the lighthouse show.

Three of Holland America Line's newest ships each offer 12 solo cabins to accommodate single travelers: the Pinnacle-class Nieuw Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Konigsdam. These ocean view staterooms range in size from 127 to 172 square feet and feature the same amenities as the double occupancy cabins but with a double bed. The cruise line's Single Staterooms are priced for one person. If a guest chooses to book a different stateroom, single supplements for double occupancy cabins are as much as 100% over the standard fare, depending on the voyage and the cabin category.

Long committed to solo travelers, the line offers many activities where guests can meet other singles such as wine tastings, cocktail mixers, exercise classes, daily quizzes, sports challenges and more. If you're a solo traveler and a member of AARP, Holland America is now the exclusive cruise benefit provider to AARP's members. Solo cruisers will have access to an AARP member-only onboard credit that ranges from $50 to $200, depending on the itinerary and stateroom category.

For itineraries, Holland America's Alaska cruises and cruisetours are perfect for solo travelers, offering many opportunities to connect with fellow cruisers. Another favorite for singles is the line's fall voyages sailing from Boston to Québec City or Montreal.

If you need more thrills to stay busy and to meet people, Royal Caribbean's ships feature world-class shows and entertainment alongside adrenaline-pumping rides and attractions. Cruise lines are making it easier and more appealing than ever for solo travelers to jump aboard.

Tricia Haston, a 40-year-old single mom, had one thing in mind when she jetted off on her first cruise vacation in March 2022: some downtime. “Normally I have kids everywhere, all the time,” says the Blue Springs, Missouri, resident, who works at a high school. So when she booked her Caribbean trip on the Norwegian Escape , she wasn’t worried about being a solo traveler — in fact, that was the whole idea.

Haston decided to book with Norwegian Cruise Line in part because of the many amenities it offers individual passengers, such as a solos-only area on eight of its ships, including the newly launched Norwegian Prima . “When you’re in the Studio Lounge,” Haston says of the retreat, “it’s quiet in a good way. You have your own concierge, the lights are low, it’s very chill, and everyone’s friendly.” She enjoyed her time aboard so much that she booked another solo sail, this time on the Norwegian Getaway , that departed just four months later.

Haston is one of a growing cohort of travelers who have, in recent years, embraced the solo cruise vacation, says Sandi Valente , the travel advisor who helped Haston book those back-to-back vacations.

“Norwegian has really created a niche,” Valente says, noting that its Studio Lounges give solo travelers a place to mingle, which helps them feel just as comfortable as the couples and families who make up the vast majority of cruise passengers.

Norwegian was also among the first to purpose-build cabins for singles, including 128 aboard the Norwegian Epic , which launched in 2010. Though at 100 square feet they’re smaller than average, the cabins are also more affordable, with no single supplement.

Since then, other lines have incorporated single-occupancy cabins as either a way to better utilize space or to repurpose existing staterooms. In the mid 2010s, Cunard added a total of 33 single cabins to its three ships, Queen Elizabeth , Queen Mary 2 , and Queen Victoria . This past September and October, Oceania Cruises converted the 18 smallest cabins on each of its four oldest ships ( Insignia , Nautica , Regatta , and Sirena ) into singles-only cabins. While the brand didn’t change the layout or amenities, the snug, 143-square-foot staterooms are a better fit for one.

“Cruise lines are seeing the need,” says Adam Martindale , a travel advisor in San Diego. “There’s a demand for single-occupancy travel, and it’s been increasing year over year.”

In response, companies are now including solo cabins into deck plans when they design new ships. Princess Cruises will have four solo cabins on its Sun Princess, which launches in 2024 — a first for the line. The five Meraviglia-class ships from MSC Cruises have as many as 34 solo cabins each; most of them are interior, meaning no view, but a few have balconies. Holland America Line incorporated 12 solo cabins on each of its three latest ships — Koningsdam , Nieuw Statendam , and Rotterdam — all with ocean views.

Courtesy of Celebrity Cruises

Others are upping the luxury ante for solos. The three latest ships from Celebrity Cruises , including the new-in-2022 Celebrity Beyond , have up to 32 single staterooms each, and all have the line’s trademark Infinite Verandas, indoor-outdoor spaces that are part sunroom, part balcony, thanks to a fully openable wall-to-wall window. Oceania’s forthcoming ship Vista will have six Concierge Level Solo Veranda staterooms when it arrives in May. Each will measure an industry-leading 270 square feet and have a private balcony.

The ultimate guide to solo cruising: Deals and best lines

Solo cruising is on the rise – research shows 45 per cent of Australians are looking for singles travel this year.

Cruise lines are racing to put out the best offers to lure solo cruisers. This means there are plenty of hot deals and lots to know for those looking for solo cruises.

Traditionally the barrier to solo cruising has been the steep costs of one person having to pay for a double cabin. However, many cruise lines are now putting out deals that reduce or even eliminate the single supplement. This makes solo cruises much more affordable.

Furthermore, some cruise ships have now fitted solo cabins. Solo guests can forget about wrestling with the supplement and just book a solo cabin.

Beyond this, some cruise lines have special lounges or activities for meeting other solo travellers. Cruise lines are fast realising the new wave of solo cruisers need to be catered for.

Norwegian Cruise Line, who put a strong emphasis on catering for solo travellers, said they had been paying attention to research that was highlighting the rise of the single traveller.

Solo travellers not alone

Skyscanner research says 45% of Australians are interested in escaping solo in 2023. And 44% cite a solo travel trip as important for their wellness.

Ben Angell, VP and Managing Director, Norwegian Cruise Line APAC says: “Cruising solo offers the ideal balance of adventure, independence, safety and security, with guests able to explore ports alone or join excursions with a community of like-minded people.

“NCL has always been at the forefront of solo cruising, and our new Prima Class ships are continuing to innovate and provide opportunities and experiences tailored to meet the needs of this growing guest sector.”

Cruise Passenger also recently covered the rise of solo cruising for women , another significant industry trend.

Solo-traveller friendly staterooms: Available on Celebrity’s Edge Series ships, including Celebrity Edge which will be making its way to AUNZ in December this year. There are Single Staterooms with an Infinite Veranda.

Celebrity Beyond has 32 solo staterooms with an Infinite Veranda, as does the new Celebrity Ascent . The Celebrity Apex features 24, while Celebrity Edge i s home to 16 solo staterooms. These single staterooms start at 131 square feet, giving you plenty of space to move around.

Onboard networking: Celebrity has added new, dedicated events for solo travellers to their programs. This includes a gathering and dinner hosted by the activity team. Guests can check the time in their Celebrity App or Celebrity Today daily program and head for the Sky Lounge (on Millennium and Solstice-series ships). Or the luscious Eden on Edge-series ships, to meet fellow solo travellers.

The friendly Activity Team will help break the ice. There will also be a special solos’ table at dinner that night, and an un-hosted solos’ table every night thereafter. This is the perfect opportunity to get together with other people travelling solo. On the first night of each cruise, Celebrity will host a welcome party where all guests are invited to mingle. There’s also opportunities to connect with travellers with programs in the Fitness Centre, or mixology and cooking classes, and more.

Royal Caribbean

Royal Caribbean has redesigned some of its ships to include solo cabins, which are now available in two categories: a superior ocean view with access to the balcony and a studio interior room with a virtual view. Unlike many other cruise lines, the beds provided in the solo cabins are in full size.

Solo cabins don’t always have balconies. Instead, you may book an interior solo room with a virtual balcony, which is a digital window that displays ocean views.

For cruises to and from Australia, Royal Caribbean offers single staterooms on Ovation of the Seas, Serenade of the Seas, and Radiance of the Seas.

Singles-friendly activities such as cooking classes, wine tastings, and scuba diving training are available. For meals, passengers cruising alone can also request to either go solo for some “me” time, or request to join a larger group.

Norwegian Cruise Line

NCL launched its first solo cabins on board Norwegian Epic in 2010. Today the cruise line offers dedicated solo accommodation options on nine ships , including its new Prima class vessels, Norwegian Prima and Norwegian Viva .

NCL’s solo Studios are cleverly designed to maximise storage space. All solo accommodation centred around the Studio Lounge. It includes a dedicated bar and TV area where solo travellers can meet and mingle.

NCL is the only cruise line to offer an exclusive lounge for solo cruisers keen to meet and relax with their fellow adventurers. Accessible by a dedicated key card, Studio Lounge provides a home-away-from home for solo guests who can unwind in a laidback environment offering complimentary refreshments, room service and a big-screen TV to watch movies with neighbouring Studio accommodation travellers.

Each NCL sailing also includes social activities coordinated by cruise staff such as hosted singles meet-ups, and opportunities to get together with other solo travellers to attend Broadway-style shows, participate in game shows, have a laugh at comedy clubs, join fitness classes or get involved in fun-filled outdoor activities such as sky-high slides, racetracks, mini-golf, and casinos, making it easy to mingle and make memories with new friends on board.

Virgin Voyages

Virgin Voyages has been a heavy promoter of solo travel in its early years as a cruise line.

The cruise line offers many activities for solos, including a “grog walk” (pub crawl) through all the different bars on the ship. At the end of the walk diners will get to shared table restaurant Gunbae, where they will gather around and dine together.

The cruise line consolidated this attitude by removing the single supplement on a range of 2023 European cruises.

Princess Cruises

Princess Cruises offers special rates for single voyages, without the supplement. Special cabins for solo travellers aren’t currently available aboard Princess ships.

The line also hosts singles nights, including evening cocktail parties and other singles events. You can also join group events, like yoga, cooking classes or even wine tastings.

Oceania Cruises

Oceania Cruises has witnessed a post-pandemic boom rise in the demand for solo travel. They are currently offering a total of 62 staterooms dedicated to solo travellers across its fleet of small, luxurious ships. Six more are scheduled to be added by 2025.

This includes six new concierge level veranda staterooms dedicated to solo travellers on the Vista . The ship offers the largest standard staterooms at sea at more than 26 square metres.

There are also 56 staterooms for solo travellers available across Oceania Cruises’ four Regatta Class ships. Each debuted 14 Solo Oceanview Staterooms in 2022.

Vista’s sister ship, Allura , launches in 2025.Her inaugural season on sale now. She will also have six staterooms dedicated to solo travellers .

For solo travellers, Cunard has redesigned the Queen Mary 2 to add 15 staterooms. The spaces were carved out from the former art gallery and casino. The oceanview cabins are spacious with a single bed, a sitting area, a writing desk, an ensuite bathroom with a shower and a mini-fridge. Solo cabins are also available onboard Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth .

Cunard is best known for its gala nights where you will be invited via formal invitation delivered to your stateroom. Tthe dress code is always revealed in advance of sailing so you can prepare.

Seabourn has special staterooms that are luxurious and intimate designed for sophisticated solo travellers, according to its website.

One of the highlights of solo travelling with Seabourn is the Retreat. It is a serene area of the ship, located in a distinctive flower-shaped canopy. The “single’s sanctuary” is ringed with 15 private cabanas designed as individual luxury living rooms. Inside, is a large HD flat-screen TV and a refrigerator stocked with your selection of drinks.

The beauty of booking a solo cabin with Ponant is that the ships are luxurious. There are at least 92 staterooms and suites, and most have balcony access. So for solo travellers looking for a more intimate cruising experience, Ponant is a good choice.

If you are looking to meet nature-loving and adventurous solo travellers, you can join the National Geographic excursions. You will be guided by professionals and a team of Nat Geo specialists.

P&O Cruises Australia

P&O Cruises Australia has several ships with solo staterooms. However, the availability of interior, oceanview and balcony cabins are limited and will depend on the ship you have selected. Arcadia has the biggest interior and balcony cabins. In selected cruises, P&O ships have a secluded area called The Oasis.

Other P&O ships with solo cabins include Brittania, Azura, Ventura, Iona, and Oriana. Aurora was remodelled in 2019 to become an adults-only ship.

Solo staterooms on P&O Cruises are a bit smaller compared to double-occupancy cabins but offer the same amenities. Please also take note that solo cabins only have showers and single beds.

Viking Cruises

All Viking ships are adults-only so solo travellers are a major part of the demographics onboard.

Viking organises specific solo and single activities such as art performances, cooking lessons and lectures. But on shore, the line offers museum visits with other solo travellers.

Holland America Line

Holland America Line offers the Single Traveller’s Program with events such as dance classes, cocktail parties and mixers. There are more onboard activities and excursions that are ideal for singles who want to meet other people.

The staterooms on Nieuw Statendam or Koningsdam are larger compared to other ship. They are equipped with full-sized bed, ensuite bathroom and ocean views.

Activities for solo travellers are available. Just explore the Explorations Central, which is Holland America Line’s exclusive destination programming. It features indispensable travel resources and resources to help you engage with onboard experts and locals.

I have done over 1000 sea days with my husband on Princess, RCI, HAL, NCL, CELEBRITY,P&O, in all grades of cabins. I have got good loyalty levels on these lines , but now that I am solo traveller, it is very difficult to get reasonably priced cabins. There are so few solo cabins on the ships that do have them, that they sell out before you can purchase one. I am 77, independent, and would love to do more cruises, IF the pricing was better. This year I was lucky enough to get on Ovation of the Seas twice including repositioning cruise from Sydney to Hawaii in April/May. Prices were good for Studio Balcony , but ship is bigger than I would like. Prefer 2000 -3000 passengers. I have 2 booked on Celebrity Edge Jan 2024 & Jan 2025 but they are much more expensive. Happy to travel on my own, as I join in with trivia etc and am never lonely. Just disappointed with being penalised for being a widow and travelling on my own. I want to get more in before I turn 80 and travel insurance makes it even more expensive for me. What are other travellers thoughts?

Well it’s about time, I have great difficulty understanding why no single supplement is available, I spend nearly twice as much as a couple.

The 5 best cruise lines for solo travelers

Gene Sloan

Editor's Note

Thinking of taking a cruise as a solo traveler? Here's the bad news: With many lines, you could end up paying twice as much as someone traveling with a companion.

Most cruise ship cabins are designed for two, and the cruise rates you see advertised for these cabins are per person, based on double occupancy . That means the rates are only available to customers who will be sharing the cabin with a second paying passenger.

For more cruise guides, news and tips, sign up for TPG's new cruise newsletter .

If you want to occupy one of these cabins alone, you'll pay a premium that, in cruise world lingo, is known as the "single supplement." Often, that premium is 100%. In other words, even if you don't have a second person in your cabin, you'll be paying an extra fare as if you did.

Still, all is not lost if you're a singleton wanting to experience life at sea. Spurred by increasing demand, a growing number of cruise lines are adding cabins designed specifically for solo travelers (with pricing that, by definition, is based on single occupancy). Some lines routinely offer lower single supplement charges than others, or they reduce or waive single supplements during promotions.

Of course, it's not just a low price that makes for a good solo cruise. Just as important for many people traveling alone is the opportunity to meet other like-minded solo travelers through meet-and-greet receptions and organized group dining for solo cruisers. Some cruise lines do a better job with this than others.

Looking at all these criteria — price, cabin options and a welcoming environment — I've identified five lines going the extra mile for cruisers traveling alone. Here are my top picks for the best cruise lines for solo travelers.

Norwegian Cruise Line

Credit Norwegian for kicking off the trend of more solo cabins on cruise ships. In 2010, the big-ship line debuted an entire zone of small "studio" cabins for one — 128 in all — on its then-new, 4,100-passenger Norwegian Epic. It was such a hit that other lines began to follow.

Just 100 square feet but superbly designed to maximize storage space, the solo rooms on Norwegian Epic are clustered around an exclusive Studio Lounge. It has a bar and television area where solo travelers can mingle at daily hosted happy hour gatherings.

princess cruises solo deals

Norwegian has since added similar solo cabin areas with exclusive lounges to seven more new ships, including its two newest vessels, Norwegian Viva and Norwegian Prima . Both ships have a 73-cabin solo complex that spreads across two decks.

The bigger Norwegian Encore, Norwegian Escape and Norwegian Bliss all have an 82-cabin solo complex, while two older ships — Norwegian Breakaway and Norwegian Getaway — have solo areas with 59 cabins.

Norwegian also offers four solo cabins on its Hawaii-based Pride of America.

Having sailed in one of Norwegian's cabins for one, I can confidently declare them among the coolest solo digs at sea. I particularly love the futuristic "Jetsons"-like design and the multicolored mood lighting.

One big caveat: They're all inside cabins without an ocean view, although most have a window that looks out onto a corridor. On Norwegian Bliss, the solo cabins have a virtual porthole that offers a live view of the outside world via an LED screen.

Related: Why a windowless inside cabin isn't so bad

A bigger caveat, perhaps, is that these solo cabins have become so popular they often sell out far in advance, and at prices that aren't much better than booking a cabin for two.

Royal Caribbean

Royal Caribbean has taken a page from Norwegian's playbook in recent years by adding solo cabins to both new and older ship classes . The line's Quantum-class vessels, which began debuting in 2014, offer up to 28 of these dedicated studio cabins, which measure from 101 to 119 square feet.

Unlike Norwegian's solo digs, some cabins are ocean-view rooms with balconies. Others have a virtual balcony that, at first glance, looks like a veranda but is really just a digital screen projecting a real-time view of the outside. (It sounds corny, but it works.)

princess cruises solo deals

Other Royal Caribbean ships with solo cabins include some of the line's giant Oasis-class vessels, including Symphony of the Seas and Wonder of the Seas . Several of Royal Caribbean's older Voyager-class and Radiance-class vessels also have solo cabins. But some of these ships have just two or three.

While the solo cabins on Royal Caribbean ships don't come with a dedicated solo lounge, solo travelers will find Royal Caribbean-hosted meetups for solo travelers on the vessels, which is a great way for single travelers to find others in the same boat, so to speak. There's also quite a bar scene on Royal Caribbean ships, with rows of bar seats in many bars that are a great place to find other solo travelers.

Additionally, Royal Caribbean ships are particularly known for their wide range of onboard activities, from big-production shows to rock-climbing walls and surfing pools, that you can enjoy just fine as a solo traveler.

Silversea Cruises

Unlike Norwegian and Royal Caribbean, Silversea hasn't created a specific cabin category for solo travelers. But the luxury line is known for catering to them with single supplements of just 10% to 25% on select sailings. Occasionally, during short-term promotions, the line even will waive the single supplement entirely.

Silversea also hosts welcome receptions for solo travelers at the start of every voyage to kick off the mingling process.

princess cruises solo deals

Operating relatively small, intimate vessels that carry just a few hundred passengers, Silversea is known for drawing a social crowd that likes to mix and mingle, particularly at dinnertime — a boon for people like me who don't like to eat alone.

Head to the main lounge just before dinner on a Silversea ship, and there's a good chance you'll be pulled into a conversation with a group of complete strangers who will extend a dinner invitation. This has happened to me so many times on Silversea ships that I almost count on it.

Related: 6 reasons you'll want to book a balcony cabin on your next cruise

On Silversea's expedition sailings, you can also share meals with ship naturalists and expedition guides who join passengers in public dining venues. From my experience, they are always amenable to a friendly dining companion and some good conversation.

Virgin Voyages

Of course, there's always the rebellious startup line Virgin Voyages , backed by Richard Branson's Virgin Group, which draws fun-loving folks (but not just millennials ). It's shaping up to be a leader in the solo cruise market, judging from my experience when I sailed on its first ship, Scarlet Lady .

The vessel boasts 46 cabins specifically designed for lone travelers — as do its newer sisters, Valiant Lady and Resilient Lady . That's a big number for a ship with just 1,330 cabins overall. We haven't yet sailed in one of their solo rooms, but based on what we saw when we toured Scarlet Lady, they might just become the coolest digs-for-one around.

princess cruises solo deals

The solo accommodations on Scarlet Lady, Valiant Lady and Resilient Lady include 40 windowless, 105-square-foot Solo Insider rooms on each vessel that are sleek and stylish with full-size beds, large flat-screen televisions, curvy vanities and high-design bathrooms. Six similar-looking Solo Sea View cabins on each vessel measure about 130 square feet and offer windows.

Note that the solo cabins with windows are at the front of the ships, facing forward. While that's a spectacular location for sightseeing, seasoned cruisers know that cabins in this location can be bumpy in rough seas. I love a little movement when I cruise (how else do you know you're at sea?), but if you don't, consider yourself warned.

Meanwhile, for solos, you'll find that Virgin's hopping bar scene — and adult-focused atmosphere — is perfect for solos looking to meet up with other single travelers. With a ban on children under 18, you won't find families with kids on this line. It's all about solo travelers, couples and friend groups looking to have a good time and engage with their shipmates on board.

Solo travelers looking for an upscale river cruise can often find a deal from Tauck, a high-end tour company with a European cruise division. It markets more than half a dozen river vessels.

Tauck often eliminates its single supplement completely on its least-expensive category of cabins (Category 1) and reduces single supplements for other cabin categories (with savings up to $1,000 in select categories).

princess cruises solo deals

On board, Tauck directors and cruise directors take special care of solo travelers, and communal tables at mealtime make it easy to meet other travelers.

Cruisers traveling alone can seek out others at the bar (no worries about the bar tab — drinks are included) or escape to a quiet sun deck spot with a book when they're tired of socializing. Daily shore excursions and tours are included, so you'll always have a group ready to explore with you on land.

River cruising in general is ideal for solo travelers, and other river lines also waive or significantly lower single supplement charges. Avalon Waterways waives its single supplement charge for some cabins on every cruise departure in Europe, and AmaWaterways charges a single supplement of just 50% for solo travelers booking non-suite cabins. It also has four ships in Europe that each have two dedicated solo cabins that carry no single supplement.

Bottom line

As someone who often cruises alone when writing about ships, I've found that smaller ships often are better for mixing and mingling than bigger ships .

On small ships, you'll see the same people again and again — on tours, in lounges, around the pool and so forth; this increases the odds you'll strike up a conversation and soon become fast friends. On big ships with thousands of passengers, you might go days without seeing the same person twice.

The lines that operate small ships are also more prone to offering discounts for solo travelers, which results in a higher percentage of individual cruisers onboard. That said, for the most part, the lines operating bigger ships are offering the most dedicated solo cabins. They also offer more onboard activities, from Broadway shows to rock-climbing walls, that you don't need companions to enjoy.

Not that you should worry too much about making friends at sea. Cruisers, in general, are social people. In fact, many passengers cruise specifically to meet others. I can't tell you how many times I've been sitting alone in a corner of a cruise ship lounge, minding my own business, when another passenger (or two or five) stopped by and struck up a conversation.

Whether you choose one of our top cruise lines for solo travelers or another line that suits your fancy, you're bound to have a good time with as much or as little alone time as you desire.

Helpful Cruise Line Information

If you've cruised before you probably have a favorite cruise line. Here at CruiseExperts.com we make it easy for you to sort through the cruise line of your choice for the best cruises at the best discounts on your favorite cruise line. Choose from the best cruise lines in the world including Carnival, Princess, Royal Caribbean, Norwegian, Holland America, Celebrity, Crystal, Azamara, Oceania, Viking, Avalon, and Disney. Best Cruise Deals and Discounts sorted by your dream destination

Sometimes it's all about the destination and that is certainly true of cruise destinations. The cruise port you depart from and the amazing cruise ports you visit define your experience as much as what cruise line or cruise ship you sail on. At CruiseExperts.com we understand that and have sorted these cruises by the places you'll visit on your cruise vacation. So whether it's a cruise to Alaska, a Caribbean cruise, cruises to Hawaii, a cruise to the Bahamas or Bermuda or a cruise to Mexico you'll find it easily with the help of our destination wizard. Maybe you're looking for a cruise vacation that's just a little different like a Panama Canal cruise, a Transatlantic cruise, cruises to Europe, a Tahiti cruise with a tour of the South Pacific, a down under adventure with an Australia / New Zealand cruise or even a fall foliage cruise through Canada and New England. Whatever “floats your boat” get started by selecting your dream destination on our cruise search page .

Last Minute Cruises can sometimes be the cheapest cruise deal.

Sometimes, but not always, the cheapest cruise deal is a Last Minute Cruise. You won't get a wide selection of stateroom categories or a chance to select your stateroom location but if your schedule is flexible you just might find a cheap cruise price on a last minute cruise. Last minute cruises are cruises leaving in the next 90 days. The cruise line really wants to fill those last few staterooms and sometimes will offer them at a discount cruise price in exchange for you giving up your right to a full selection of cabin categories or deck locations. CruiseExperts.com makes it easy for you to poke around and see what's available in last minute cruise deals. View our Last Minute Cruise Deals by clicking here and give it a try. This is one of our most popular website features.

Moscow cruise port

Region Russia Rivers

Local Time 2024-03-10 07:16

Moscow is a Volga River cruise port, Russia's capital and largest city (population over 12,2 million, metro 17 million). Moscow City covers a total area of approx 2610 km 2 (970 mi2). By population, the city is ranked the world's 14th largest. Moscow is one of the Russian Federation's all 3 federal cities - together with St Petersburg and Sevastopol .

Being Russian Federation's capital, Moscow is a major economic, political, scientific and cultural center, as well as Europe's biggest city.

According to Forbes 2013, Moscow has been ranked as the 9th most expensive city in the world by Mercer and has one of the largest urban economies, being ranked as an alpha global city according to Globalization and World Cities Research Network. It is also one of the fastest-growing tourist destinations in the world according to MasterCard Global Destination Cities Index. Moscow is the northernmost and the coldest megacity and metropolis on the Earth. It's home to Ostankino Tower, the tallest free-standing European structure; the Federation Tower, the tallest European skyscraper; and the Moscow International Business Center.

Moscow is situated on Moskva River in the Central Federal District of European Russia, which makes it the most populated inland city in the world. Moscow city is well known for architecture, particularly its historic buildings like Saint Basil's Cathedral. With over 40% of its territory covered by greenery, it's one of the greenest capitals and major cities in Europe and the world. Moscow is the seat of power of the Russian Government, being the site of Moscow Kremlin, a medieval city-fortress that is now the residence of the President of Russia. Moscow Kremlin and Red Square are among the several World Heritage Sites in the city.

Moscow has 2 passenger terminals, North River Terminal (Rechnoy vokzal) and South River Terminal. The regular ship routes and cruises along Moskva and Oka rivers are used mostly for entertainment. North River Terminal (1937-built) is currently the main hub for long-range routes along the river. There are 3 freight ports that serve Moscow.

In late-July 2021 the city announced plans to incorporate a fleet (unspecified number) of fully electric passenger ferries into its public transportation network from summer 2022, the goal being to reduce the dependence on cars.

  • The boats are designed with length ~22 m (72 ft), passenger capacity 42, modern amenities (Wi-Fi, USB charging points, tables for working commuters), spaces for storing scooters and bicycles.
  • Moscow Transport confirmed that two routes (with max daily capacity ~16,000 passengers) have already been mapped out.
  • Passengers will be able to pay via bank cards, the city’s Troika card (smart card for travel by any public transportation) or biometric payment cards. Those with monthly/yearly public transit tickets will use the boats at no extra cost.
  • The new electric ferry service is up to 5 times faster (in comparison to other city public transports) and ~2 times faster than by car.

Moscow cruise terminal

Moscow's cruise terminal is called North River Terminal or River Station  ("Rechnoy Vokzal" / "речной вокзал").

The terminal was opened in 1937 and is one of 2 passenger terminals (the other being South River Terminal) of the city's river transport. North River Terminal is the main hub for long-range (including cruise) shipping routes.

South River Terminal (above photo) was opened in 1985.
