Leicester - an introduction

The beautiful city of Leicester , brimming with 2000 years of history, cannot fail to inspire on coach trips. The city simply oozes chic-ness and the contemporary shopping areas will keep die-hard shopaholics in utter heaven throughout their stay here. After a hard day's shopping, kick-back those tired feet with an ice-cold drink in one of the many stylish bars and restaurants.

Leicester is the largest city in the East Midlands and it is where Thomas Cook, in 1841, started the travel industry when he organised a trip from Leicester to Loughborough by train. He lived in the city for 50 years and there are a variety of buildings connected to him within the city centre – see if you can spot the monument dedicated to Thomas Cook on your own travels.

More recently, the eyes of the world have been focused on Leicester due to the discovery of King Richard III's skeleton which was buried underneath a council car park in the city. An exhibition marking the discovery of his remains, as well as the ruins of Greyfriars Church, was launched at the Guildhall in February 2013. 'Richard III: Leicester's Search For A King' is a free exhibition at the Guildhall open until Spring 2014. Visitors to the exhibition on Leicester day trips will find detailed examinations about the archaeological excavation as well as learning about the life and times of King Richard III through interactive touchscreen displays. You can also see a model of his skull which is on loan from Loughborough University. The exhibition will be held in Leicester's Guildhall until a permanent Visitor's Centre is available.

Leicester is without a doubt a mecca for history and culture vultures because of its links with famous figures such as Richard III, King Henry VI and Cardinal Wolsey. The city also has links to Egypt and the Romans with Leicester housing one of the highest Roman walls in the country at the Jewry Wall Museum. Visit St Nicholas Church which is a fine example of Saxon architecture and see the original site of Leicester Castle where the Motte is clearly visible at Castle Gardens. Other popular medieval landmarks to pay attention to include the Guildhall, the Elizabethan Chantry House and the Magazine Gateway which can all be seen on coach tours to Leicester.

Aside from history and culture, Leicester is the perfect destination for people of all ages whether you're looking for a vibrant nightlife or just wish to cosy up with a meal from around in the world in one of the city's fabulous restaurants. There's also a choice of theatres and live entertainment to choose from in addition to a calendar jam-packed full of festivals and other events to keep the whole family entertained. Leicester truly is a city that's just waiting to be explored.

Coach trips to Leicester will include return coach travel, accommodation in a quality hotel (unless it's a day trip), meals and excursions.

Heart Of England

Leicester is a busy city with lots to see and do. Here are our top spots whilst in and around the city:

Rockingham Castle Built under the instruction of William the Conqueror and set in the Welland Valley, Rockingham Castle welcomes thousands of visitors each year. Visitors are given the chance to explore the castle at their own pace, although guides are also on hand to answer any questions or queries. The castle gardens are beautifully landscaped; be sure to look at the Elephant Hedge which is 400 years old!

Melton Mowbray Well known for its famous Pork Pies and Stilton Cheese, Melton Mowbray is a popular destination for visitors to Leicestershire. Stilton Cheese originated near Melton Mowbray and is still produced in the town today. When visiting, be sure to try a Melton Mowbray pork pie from Ye Olde Pork Pie Shoppe; you'll never taste a pork pie like it!

Leicester Abbey Situated around a mile north of the city of Leicester, the 12 th  Century Abbey was once one of the largest buildings on the nearby landscape. Leicester Abbey sadly did not survive its turbulent history, but the ruins are located in the 57 acre Abbey Park along with a memorial to Cardinal Wolsey who was laid to rest in the grounds.

Bradgate Country Park Located within Charnwood Forest, Bradgate Park and Swithland Wood Country Park is a great destination for visitors all year round. It is in this Country Park that you can see Old John Tower, one of Leicestershire's most famous landmarks, standing 690ft above sea level on one of the county's highest points. The park is also home to a herd of Fallow Deer, which were brought to Britain by the Romans, in addition to a herd of Red Deer.

To help you have an enjoyable holiday in England, please take a look at these useful tips and advice provided by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office:

Health and Travel Insurance  Travel insurance is recommended by all our tour operators and for some operators it is a condition of booking. When choosing a travel insurance please ensure it fully covers all your personal requirements including pre-existing medical conditions, cancellation charges, medical expenses, and repatriation in the event of accident or illness. As a British citizen you will obviously be entitled to free emergency health care on the NHS.

If you are visiting England from outside the United Kingdom and fall ill or are involved in an accident and are from an EU country or Switzerland, you can use a valid EHIC issued by your home country to access healthcare. Please note this is not an alternative to travel insurance.  Comprehensive travel insurance is advised for nationalities planning on visiting the UK.

For the latest information and travel advice regarding Coronavirus (COVID-19), please click  here

If you need to contact the emergency services whilst in the UK simply dial 999 or 112 to ask for an ambulance.

Crime  The United Kingdom is a safe place to visit, however, as with all countries please exercise common sense. Petty crime can occur so take your usual precautions such as not leaving luggage unattended, beware of pickpockets in tourist areas and leave valuables in the hotel safe.

Local Laws and Customs  Queuing is a British Institution - jump a queue at your own risk!

If you are visiting from outside of the United Kingdom, it is wise to check customs requirements before you travel. If you are planning to bring alcohol, tobacco or souvenirs into the country, you need to be familiar with the UK's custom laws. If you go over your allowances, you may have to pay tax or duty. It is worth checking the  HM Revenues and Customs website  before you travel.

UK Entry Requirements  When travelling between the UK, Northern Ireland, the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man you may need to show a Border Force officer a document confirming your identity. In most cases an official form of identification such as a driver's license or an armed forces identity card will be ok. However, some airlines will insist you show a passport so please check before you travel.

If you’re from the EU, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein you can enter the UK with one of the following identity documents: a passport, an Irish passport card or a national identity card issued by an EU country, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein, if you’re eligible to use one. The identity document should be valid for the whole of your stay.

If you’re from outside the EU, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein, you must have a valid passport to enter the UK. It should be valid for the whole of your stay. You may also need a visa, depending on which country you’re from. Please check  here  if a visa is required before you travel.

Walkers crisps was founded in Leicester in 1947 and is now one of the largest crisp production plants in the world, producing over 11 million bags of crisps per day and using about 800 tons of potatoes.

‘Something’s not right’: Leicester coach Dan McKellar hits out at Champions Cup draw

D an McKellar, the head coach of Leicester Tigers, has questioned a bizarre Champions Cup draw that represents a repeat of his side’s group stage schedule in the knockout rounds.

Leicester travel to face Leinster on Saturday in the last 16 with the winner due to face either the Stormers or La Rochelle in the following weekend’s quarter-final. All four teams shared Pool D earlier this season, with the Tigers having beaten Stormers 35-26 before going down 45-12 against La Rochelle. Leinster also met La Rochelle back in December, prevailing 16-9.

Similar reunions scatter the rest of the draw. Northampton Saints, for instance, take on Munster for the second time this campaign in the last 16. Bordeaux-Bègles and Saracens and Bulls and Lyon are also reacquainted in two more ties.

“Someone hasn’t got something right, have they, when they were planning the competition?” McKellar said. “I was driving in this morning thinking ‘[if we win] we’re going to France or South Africa to play the Stormers or La Rochelle… that sounds familiar’.

“Something’s not right. That’s the whole reason you have pools and you want some variety, I suppose. But it is what it is. We’ve got to play Leinster this weekend in Dublin. They earned the right to host it at home and we go over there with a whole load of belief, full of intent to cause an upset because I don’t think there is a whole lot of people who will expect us to win.”

McKellar explained that he will confirm “in the next 24 hours” whether or not Leicester will have Ollie Chessum, George Martin and Tommy Reffell available at the Aviva Stadium, with those three forwards still suffering from “bumps and bruises” sustained during the Six Nations on duty for England and Wales, respectively.

In Chessum and Martin, as well as Dan Cole, McKellar has three men who started for England in a 23-22 victory over Ireland last month. A significant portion of that Ireland side will be in action against Leicester, though Jacques Nienaber and Leo Cullen have their own injury worries with a host of Leinster front-liners including Andrew Porter, Robbie Henshaw, Hugo Keenan and Garry Ringrose being assessed over the week.

Tigers are taking on Leinster for the fourth time in three Champions Cup campaigns and searching for a first win in that sequence. A 27-10 defeat in January, which “we dominated for large periods”, has given heart to a defiant McKellar.

“Look, they’re an international quality rugby side,” he said. “But they’ve got two arms, two legs and a heartbeat and we’ll go over there with the intention to disrupt them.”

“We believe,” McKellar added. “If you look at the Leicester Tigers DNA, when there are backs to the wall and not a lot of hope about positive outcomes, that’s when this club thrives.”

Best Affordable Crossbody Bag For Travel

Security features plus many pockets, travelon anti-theft classic mini shoulder bag.

Dimensions: 8.5 x 8.5 x 2.25 inches | Weight: 0.7 pounds | Materials: Polyester, nylon

Travelon’s Anti-Theft Classic Mini Shoulder Bag packs an impressive punch for being so small. Its six pockets keep everything where you need it—including an RFID-blocking passport and card interior organizer—while a tethered key caddy with an LED light eliminates that dreaded “can’t-find-it-in-my-bag” feeling. The 5-Point Anti-Theft security system protects against theft threats with slash-resistant fabric, lockable straps and secure zipper pulls. Not only will you feel safe wearing this bag, but thanks to its 13 colors and prints, you’ll also look stylish anywhere your trip may take you.

Best Crossbody Bag For Organization

A compact sling bag with room to spare, aer day sling 3.

Dimensions: 11.5 x 6 x 3 inches | Weight: 0.8 pounds | Materials: Cordura nylon

With a ballistic nylon exterior and a unique design that zips open for easy access, Aer’s Day Sling 3 is one of the more durable crossbody options out there. There are multiple loops for strapping onto your luggage or storage and a handy front pocket with a key leash and cool security features like a secret back pocket. There’s also a sneaky Fidlock clasp that makes it harder for a pickpocket to snatch your bag.

Best Crossbody Bag For Parents

Extra space and storage for the whole family, hobo sheila large satchel.

Dimensions: 13.5 x 14 x 5.5 inches | Weight: 1.6 pounds | Materials: Raffia, leather

For parents or travelers who need to tote a lot of stuff on the go, a larger bag might be in order. Hobo’s Sheila Large Satchel offers nice organizational features and high style points. It’s made of a lightweight woven raffia with leather trim for added durability, plus its six interior pockets, key lanyard and accessible side exterior pocket are perfect for storing smaller items you may need throughout the day. Its main compartment is quite roomy, easily fitting a laptop, kid’s tablet, diaper wipes, snacks, toys, a backup outfit and more. The flexibility of its 3-in-1 styling really stands out—the adjustable strap can be worn as a crossbody, shortened for a shoulder bag or simply removed to transform into a classy top handle bag for a night out after the kiddos go to sleep.

Best Crossbody Bag For Beach Trips

Large and easy to wear for sandy days in the sun.

Urban Outfitters

Baggu Large Nylon Crescent Bag

Dimensions: 10.5 × 19.5 × 5.25 inches | Weight: N/A (not listed) | Materials: 100% recycled nylon

A beach bag calls for some pretty specific features: it needs to be durable and water-resistant, it should be big enough to hold bulky towels and ideally, it has a simple shape so sand won’t get lodged in the nooks and crannies. After much research, the Baggu Crescent Bag fits the bill. Its adjustable strap can be worn across the chest or as a tighter-fitting shoulder bag, the large size is roomy enough for a couple towels and a change of clothes and the zippered interior pocket keeps your wallet and keys secure. The quick-drying ripstop nylon is not only recycled, it’s also durable enough to withstand the windiest—and wettest—of beach days. Consider adding a few of Baggu’s fun printed flat pouches for additional organization.

Best Crossbody Bag For Active Trips

A durable sling with no detail spared, nomatic navigator sling 6l.

Dimensions: 13.5 x 9 x 4 inches | Weight: 1.3 pounds | Materials: 80% nylon, 20% polyester

Whether you’re hiking, biking or riding the metro, the Navigator Sling from Nomatic offers durability, storage and some impressive features. There’s a water bottle holder that zips away when not in use, a molded EVA back panel for wearable comfort and breathability, a tamper-resistant zipper and tech features like built-in tablet storage, an RFID-blocking pocket for your cards and a cord-pass through for charging your devices in different pockets. If you’re running or moving around a lot, there’s also a stabilizer strap that clips on to keep the sling even more secure to your body. Unlike some sling styles, this bag has multiple zippered storage compartments, the main one opening extra wide for easier access.

Most Versatile Crossbody Bag For Travel

Four ways to wear it.

Lo & Sons

Lo & Sons Waverley 2 in Nappa Leather

Dimensions: 5.6 x 8 x 2 inches | Weight: 0.6 pounds | Materials: Nappa, Saffiano or cactus leather

When you’re on the go, sometimes the last thing you want is to ruin the flow of the day by making a pit stop at the hotel to change out a bag before dinner. We like the Lo & Sons Waverley for its inventive versatility that adapts to your needs. The minimal leather design has an adjustable strap that can be worn 4 ways: as a hands-free belt bag, a longer crossbody, a casual shoulder bag or an elevated clutch with (or without) a wristlet. The main compartment is large enough for the essentials and the zippered inner pocket keeps smaller items secure no matter where your day—or night—takes you.

Best Belt Bag For Travel

Hands-free storage in a slim profile, lululemon everywhere belt bag 1 l.

Dimensions: 7.5 x 2 x 5 inches | Weight: N/A (not listed) | Materials: Nylon, recycled polyester

Over 22,500 reviewers agree: the Lululemon Everywhere Belt Bag is sleek, lightweight and versatile enough to be worn just about anywhere your travels take you. It has a water-repellant nylon exterior and one main compartment, three mesh interior pockets for added organization and a back zipper for your phone or cards. Its adjustable strap can tighten for comfortable wearing around your waist or it can be extended as a crossbody sling. With a 1L capacity, this bag is definitely on the smaller side, so you might want to consider their larger 2L size if you need more space.

Best Crossbody Bag For Men

Rugged looks for when you're on the go, cotopaxi coso 2l hip pack.

Dimensions: 11 x 7 x 3 inches | Weight: 10 ounces | Materials: Recycled nylon, recycled polyester

This easy-wearing hip pack from Cotopaxi combines an urban rugged look with smart storage solutions. The recycled nylon exterior is durable with a matte TPU coating, making it water-resistant and easy to clean, while a fleece interior pocket stores your phone or other small devices without any scratch risk. There’s multiple grab handles for easy carrying, secure pockets for smaller items and in addition to the main zippered compartment, the exterior front flap pocket can store a rolled-up lightweight jacket when you get warm on the go. G-hooks on both sides can be adjusted for customized storage and it can be comfortably worn as a crossbody on the front or back, or around the waist as a belt bag.

Best Leather Crossbody Bag For Travel

Three storage sections in a minimal package, quince italian leather triple compartment crossbody.

Dimensions: 7.8 x 9.5 x 3 inches | Weight: 1.54 pounds | Materials: Leather

Quince’s smooth Italian leather crossbody might look simple from the outside, but there’s actually a lot of unexpected storage inside. The bag has three main compartments—two zippered sections flanking one open area that closes with snaps—plus three internal zippered pockets to take your organization a step further. It also comes with two detachable straps that allow for crossbody or wristlet wear. Quince is known for its fair prices and ethical manufacturing process, and if that’s not impressive enough, the brand also offers a generous 365-day return policy.

UConn Men's Basketball Faces Travel Issues En Route to Final Four in Phoenix

  • Author: Tom Dierberger

In this story:

The UConn men's basketball team punched its ticket to the Final Four without much trouble, handily defeating Stetson, Northwestern, San Diego State and Illinois to win the East Region.

Actually traveling to the Final Four in Phoenix, however, posed a challenge for coach Dan Hurley and the Huskies.

CBS Sports' Matt Norlander reported Wednesday the Huskies' original flight to Phoenix was scheduled to leave Wednesday at 6 p.m. ET, but their plane arriving from Kansas City had logistical and mechanical issues that forced a delay.

Per Norlander, the crew flying the plane from Kansas City would be over their FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) hours and can't fly the team to Arizona. UConn would have to wait until 10 a.m. ET on Thursday to fly on that plane.

ESPN's Pete Thamel reported later Wednesday that the Huskies found a solution—a flight expected to leave the East Coast around 11:30 p.m. ET Wednesday. UConn will arrive in Phoenix around 2 a.m. ET Thursday.

Was told that UConn’s men’s team appears to have a solution to its travel woes getting to Arizona. A flight is expected to leave around 11:30 tonight. They’ll get in around 2 a.m. As @MattNorlander noted, there’s been mechanical/crew issues for the Huskies. — Pete Thamel (@PeteThamel) April 4, 2024

While the Huskies waited in limbo for an available flight, the other three Final Four teams—Alabama, Purdue and NC State—already arrived in Phoenix.

UConn, the tournament's No. 1 overall seed, is set to face No. 4 seed Alabama in the national semifinals on Saturday at State Farm Stadium.

Champions Cup: Premiership sides Harlequins, Exeter, Bath, Leicester, Northampton, Saracens seek quarter spots

Quins host Glasgow on Friday seeking first quarter-final for 11 years; Exeter Chiefs and Bath face off in West Country affair in only all-Premiership clash; Leicester, Northampton face Irish heavyweight duo Leinster, Munster; Saracens face tough trip to Bordeaux, but travel with belief

Friday 5 April 2024 13:18, UK

Marcus Smith, Fin Smith, Jamie George

It's been eight years since the Premiership had more than three clubs make it to the Champions Cup quarter-finals, but there remain six in play heading in to this weekend's crunch last-16 ties.

And the Premiership sides left in Europe's premier competition this season are in better form, and have far more hope, than in previous years.

A by-product of the sad demise of three clubs in Worcester Warriors, Wasps and London Irish, is that more quality players have been concentrated among fewer clubs, making them far more competitive up against the top French and Irish sides.

Harlequins, Exeter Chiefs, Bath, Leicester Tigers, Saracens and Northampton Saints are each seeking a long run in Europe...

And it will come just six days after the 2020 European champions were destroyed 41-5 by Sale, leaving Exeter two points outside the Premiership play-off zone.

"The players had a fairly long meeting on Tuesday where they wanted to clear the air among themselves and talk bits and pieces through," Baxter said.

"For a young team, sometimes having a smack in the face just reminds you of how tough it is going to be and how hard you have got to work and cannot take things for granted.

"They wanted to do it, and I thought it was a good idea. It allowed them to clear the air among themselves, and letting the players clear their heads at the start of the week was the important thing.

"It just felt the right thing to do, it felt we had to let them get it off their chests in their way.

"It wouldn't have been the same if we had all sat in a meeting with all the coaches. That's human nature.

"They don't want to spend the whole week waiting for us to have a go at them. They are better off just knowing that's not coming and they get it off their chests."

Leicester and Northampton face Irish heavyweight duo Leinster and Munster

Previous winners Leicester and Northampton face stern tasks to make the quarters, facing Ireland's top two sides in Leinster and Munster.

Premiership leaders Northampton host two-time winners Munster on Sunday, while Leicester travel to face four-time winners Leinster in Dublin on Saturday.

Saints will be confident of victory, having travelled to Thomond Park and beaten Munster in January - and that after hooker Curtis Langdon was shown a first-half red card too - becoming just the fifth side in history to win at the home of Munster in the European Cup following Leicester, Ulster, Clermont Auvergne and Toulouse.

Munster as a province live for European Cup fixtures on the road, however, and with the likes of Jack Crowley, Tadhg Beirne and Peter O'Mahony full of confidence from Ireland's Six Nations-winning camp, as well as World Cup-winner RG Snyman fit to start, they will be hungry to cause an upset at Franklin's Gardens.

The Tigers face a really tough proposition in Leinster at the Aviva Stadium. The Irish province have progressed to the Champions Cup final in the last two seasons, only to lose to La Rochelle on both occasions.

A Leicester win over Leinster in the Irish capital would constitute the shock of the round.

Saracens face tough trip to Bordeaux, but travel with belief

England's most successful club Saracens (three-time Champions Cup winners), sit third in the Premiership table at the moment, but face a difficult trip away to face Bordeaux-Begles.

Bordeaux have struggled on the road of late, but have been in startling form for a lot of this season, too.

The French side's backline is star-studded, and full of French internationals in wings Damian Penaud and Louis Bielle-Biarrey, fly-half Matthieu Jalibert and centres Yoram Moefana and Nicolas Depoortere.

Saracens have faced Bordeaux already in Europe this season, succumbing to a crushing 55-15 defeat in January. Mark McCall's men have improved massively since then, but in Owen Farrell's final season at the club - the leader and fly-half is out injured with a hamstring complaint in a major blow - they will likely need their best performance of the season to progress.
