Have you heard the buzz? Brass takes on a fresh shine with dynamic performance and fresh, stimulating interaction, as classics you know and love are reinterpreted through trumpet, horn and trombone. With a knack for creating engaging concerts which appeal to a wide audience, Buzz Brass is establishing itself as an adept Canadian brass quintet.

The group has taken top awards at the Prix Opus (Opus Awards) and the Association québécoise de l’industrie du disque (ADISQ) and the Trille Or Awards, and were among the Top 10 Picks at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival | The History of Music.

Capable of transporting audiences from familiar classical masterworks to peppy ragtime-era tunes through to the jazz of Gershwin and a dreamy, poetic treatment of Satie’s Gymnopédie No. 3,  Buzz Brass has collaborated with established symphony orchestras including those of Gatineau, Winnipeg, Quebec City and Ottawa’s National Arts Centre Orchestra.

This is brass at its best, delivered with intelligence, whimsy and skill.

Description

Additional information.

For its first album for ATMA Classique, Buzz Cuivres (Buzz Brass) presents Héritage , featuring an array of important works for brass by composers Victor Ewald, Axel Jørgensen, and Oskar Böhme, who have left a rich legacy of chamber music for brass. All the works on the program were composed specifically for brass instruments at the beginning of the 20th century and showcase their beauty and virtuosity.

Around 1820, the invention of valves finally enabled brass instruments to play all the notes in the chromatic scale, as woodwinds and strings had long been able to do. This technical progress spurred musicians to perfect their art and created a climate in which performers could flourish, leading to what might be called a “golden age” of brass writing. This is what this recording is all about.

The Canadian quintet Buzz Cuivres has been travelling the world and captivating classical music lovers since 2002. Whether alone or with guest musicians, Buzz Brass’s highly original performances consistently make a strong impression. The ensemble has given over 1 800 concerts and won over more than 450 000 music lovers across North America, Europe, and China. Over the years, Buzz Cuivres has earned numerous awards and honours—including Canada’s Opus, ADISQ, and Trille Or prizes—in recognition of the quality and renown of its performances.

With its innovative programs, acclaimed recordings, unique repertoire, and broad appeal, the group has become one of Canada’s most reputable brass quintets. With this album, the quintet now has eight to its credit and continues working on new repertoire for future recordings.

Buzz Brass Christmas Tickets

Buzz brass christmas concert tickets.

Beginning with the birth of blues in the 1870s Deep South, the storytelling quality of the genre has made it one of the most beloved and intimate music styles. As the 1920s approached, jazz came on the scene and became a rousing compliment to an already-established musical movement.

Drawing from its origins in the traditions of African Music, the blues greatly influenced the emergence of early jazz. Often woven with themes of struggle and spirituality, the jazz-blues genre rose to prominence with early pioneers such as W.C. Handy, known as the father of the blues.

Instruments play a significant role in the stylization of the music itself and popular accompaniments include harmonica, saxophone and slide guitar. Artists like B.B. King brought the genre to a new generation in the 1950s.

As the music continued to emerge and evolve, musicians like Kenny Wayne Shepherd and Joe Bonamassa carried the traditional sounds to contemporary audiences. Buy Buzz Brass Christmas tickets today and get lost in the music.

What is High-Resolution Audio?

High-resolution audio offers the highest-fidelity available, far surpassing the sound quality of traditional CDs. When you listen to music on a CD or tracks purchased via consumer services such as iTunes, you are hearing a low-resolution version of what was actually recorded and mastered in the studio. ProStudioMasters offers the original studio masters — exactly as the artist, producers and sound engineers mastered them — for download, directly to you.

What do I need for playback?

You may need additional software / hardware to take full advantage of the higher 24-bit high-res audio formats, but any music lover that has heard 16-bit vs 24-bit will tell you it's worth it!

Software for Mac OS X

  • iTunes : plays AIFF, it's free and you probably have it already!
  • Audirvana : plays both AIFF and FLAC formats, $50 but has a free trial period

Software for Windows

  • JRiver : plays both AIFF and FLAC formats, $50 but has a free trial period

Hardware Suggestions

  • Meridian Explorer : USB Digital to Analog Converter, up to 192kHz/24-bit.

Masters green jacket celebrates 75 years: Brass buttons, hockey pucks, missing jackets ... and everything in between

Change Text Size

Part of the registration form to compete in the Masters includes a field asking for players’ jacket size.

It’s not hard to guess why. The iconic green jacket is one of the most coveted prizes in golf and has become synonymous with achievement, tradition and honor. It meant so much to 1970 Masters champion Billy Casper that he even requested to be buried in it.

Of course, some players like Jordan Spieth don’t know their jacket size. Following his 2015 Masters victory, Spieth recalled: “I didn't give them my size originally. I wore the one off the green that day, and I never gave it back to them to tailor or anything, … so it's huge.”

Follow along as we delve into the origins and history of the green jacket and see how players have had fun with the fabric on and off Augusta’s hallowed grounds.

The origins

In 1930, while attending The Open Championship at Royal Liverpool Club, Augusta National Golf Club co-founder and legendary amateur golfer Bobby Jones noticed that all of the club’s captains were clothed in matching red jackets. Jones would go on to win The Open and was privately gifted a red jacket of his own. When Augusta opened three years later, Jones pitched the idea of jackets. The colors red, yellow and “Georgia peach” were floated, but the club eventually settled on the verdant green that pillowed the azalea bushes.

By 1937, every Augusta member attending the Masters donned wool “green jackets” in order to stand out to visitors, who could ask members for directions.

With his win in 1949, Sam Snead became the first Masters champion to be awarded a green jacket and all past champions were retroactively given one.

The details

The green jacket’s fabric is a school uniform mix of wool and polyester produced locally in Georgia, while the jackets themselves are made in Cincinnati. The blazer is the trademarked shade “Pantone 342,” or “Masters green,” and is single-breasted and single-vented with logo-stamped custom brass buttons made in Connecticut. The left breast pocket has an embroidered patch with the Augusta National logo, and the owner’s name is stitched in the inside lining. Each jacket takes about a month to produce and costs around $250.

The club has jackets of various sizes on standby for winners, and the ceremonial jacket originally presented to winners eventually gets swapped out for a custom one of their size. Champions also have the option to get their jacket tailored – though some like Spieth (“I never trusted anybody, never wanted anyone to go do it”) have declined.

Repeat winners are awarded the same original green jacket. Just ask José María Olazábal, who knew his 1999 green jacket was the same as his jacket from his 1994 win “because the name is still misspelled inside” (spelled "Olazabel”).

Of course, the exception is six-time Masters winner Jack Nicklaus, who didn’t officially own his own green jacket until 1998 – 35 years after winning his first. As a heavier-set 23-year-old in 1963, Arnold Palmer presented him with a size 46 jacket.

“It hung on me like an old blanket,” Nicklaus recalled.

Winning again just a year later – and with still no replacement jacket ordered – Nicklaus used a loaner jacket for his next three wins. Wanting to keep it going, he eventually ordered a replica green jacket – of completely wrong cut and color – that was presented to him in 1975. Somehow, nobody noticed.

Finally, the jig was up in 1997, when Nicklaus approached Chairman Jack Stephens, who offered up a new, official green jacket.

Outfit of champions

Entering Sunday at Augusta National, surely every player in contention dresses himself with the possibility of a green jacket in the back of his mind?

But in the case of Bernhard Langer at the 1985 Masters, perhaps not. He became the first Masters champion to pair a bright red shirt and pants with the green jacket, and he lit up Augusta National like a Christmas tree.

“I felt comfortable in red,” said Langer. “It’s an aggressive color.”

Langer is not the only champion to have graced the fairways with bold fashion choices. In his first of three Masters victories, Sir Nick Faldo wore a white sweater with green geometric patterns over a light blue polo paired with blue pants. He later capped off his green jacket garb with a Union Jack-patterned cap.

During the final round of the 1995 Masters, Ben Crenshaw wore a whimsical shirt featuring photos of Bobby Jones printed all over. His green jacket ceremony was a fitting tribute to the originator of the garment.

Off the grounds

Only the defending Masters champion may take his green jacket off the grounds, and Faldo took full advantage of that perk. As the legend of the green jacket grew, so did the buzz around the champion after each tournament, and Faldo began to wear it during press appearances. Other players followed suit, as champions like Trevor Immelman and Zach Johnson wore the jacket as they went through the post-Masters New York “car wash,” appearing on talk shows, touring the Empire State Building and ringing the opening bell at the New York stock exchange.

Immelman also paid a visit to see his favorite basketball team, the Boston Celtics, play in Madison Square Garden, cementing the tradition of wearing the green jacket to other sporting events. Both 2003 champion Mike Weir and 2022 champion Scottie Scheffler opened sports games in their green jackets, as Weir dropped the puck at the Air Canada Centre and Scheffler threw the first at a Texas Rangers baseball game.

A case of the missing jacket

Some champions were not quite as observant of the one-year rule. When asked to return his jacket in 2002 by then-Chairman Hootie Johnson, two-time Masters champion Seve Ballesteros (1980, 1983) declined.

South Africa’s Gary Player, who became the first international winner of the Masters in 1961, was requested to bring his jacket back by Clifford Roberts. He famously replied, “Fine, Mr. Roberts, if you want it, come and fetch it!” Player ultimately agreed to not wear the jacket in public, and players were eventually issued a replica jacket they could keep at home.

The legend lives on

Over the years, other wacky scenarios have emerged.

When a 21-year-old Tiger Woods won his first of five Masters Champions in 1997, he refused to remove it. “I fell asleep fully clothed and hugging the green jacket like a blanket,” he recalled afterward.

When 2007 champion Zach Johnson arrived in Times Square with the jacket covered by a white trash bag, his wife Kim explained: “We don’t have a garment bag. We didn’t plan on winning the Masters.”

While back home in Australia, 2013 champion Adam Scott endured a scare: “One of the buttons was ripped off by a friend of mine because he was just so excited,” he shared. Luckily, Scott was able to patch it up at home with no long-term issues.

The 2021 champion, Hideki Matsuyama, was spotted carrying the green jacket through the Atlanta airport and admitted that for the entire year, he never had his jacket dry cleaned. “I just was so worried that something might happen to it,” he said. “… I didn’t want to let it out of my sight.”

Making Art From the Unexpected at Milan Design Week

Designers are showing off some of their latest works at the annual festival of furnishings and household objects.

A stool or ottoman made up of wooden poles that cross, forming a cup-like space into which a large orange ball has been placed. There are three more balls, to the sides on the ground: green, yellow and blue. All look like tennis balls.

By The New York Times

This article is part of our Design special report previewing Milan Design Week.

Designers are by definition manipulators — of materials, senses and expectations. There is nothing they like better than making the beholders of their creations stop in their tracks. At the Salone del Mobile, in a show devoted to emerging designers that runs through Sunday, visitors may be arrested by a cushion that resembles a big colorful, softball and sits like an egg in a nest of polished wood sticks. What is it? An ottoman, naturally. A few other eye catchers and head scratchers are presented below.

Another Approach to Seating

After studying industrial design at the University of Notre Dame, Ryan Twardzik tried his hand at footwear, accessory and graphic design. But “all I wanted to do was furniture,” he recalled. Moving to Schuylkill County, in Pennsylvania, in 2021, he had access to local manufacturers, including a metal fabricator who primarily built roller coasters. That led to his furniture company, Unform Studio, and its debut collection, Drip, a series of fluoro-colored chairs formed of bent metal sheeting. “I want to make things that are not just fun to look at, but also fun to touch and interact with,” he said.

Mr. Twardzik is showing works from two new collections at SaloneSatellite, the presentation of young designers that runs concurrently with the Salone del Mobile. The first, Spherae, is a ball-shaped cushion supported by three polished wood dowels that slide through a brass disc and lock into place.

“I’ve been calling it passive joinery,” Mr. Twardzik said, because the construction, inspired by foldable camping chairs, does not require tools for assembly. The stool or ottoman comes with four different cushions resembling giant, fruit-toned softballs that can be swapped out. “You can just pop whichever color you want on there,” he said, “and the other three live around the piece.”

The designer is also showing an armchair from his Pop-Up collection. Formed of 20 metal posts wrapped in upholstered foam cylinders, it functions loosely like a soft-touch bed of nails. “They pop up at different heights. Some to arm and back height and some to a shorter seat height,” he said about the components. The experiments, he added, are far from over: “There are so many ways to explore how to make a chair.”

Exploring the Sound of Color

Last year at peak times, visitors to “Shaped by Water” — Google’s Milan Design Week offering — stood in line for up to two and a half hours to be admitted.

Inside the exhibition, they experienced light and sound waves passing through water in humming, resonant bowls (some visitors started hugging them), and a planetarium-style music and light show. “We had some people coming back three and four times,” said Ivy Ross, Google’s vice president of hardware design, who oversaw the project.

Now Google is switching elements with a celebration of color, partnering with the California arts and research lab Chromasonic to create the installation “Making Sense of Color.”

Thanks to Chromasonic’s technology, which translates light waves into sound and sound waves into light, visitors who pass through “Sensory Field” — 21 spaces at the beginning of the installation separated by translucent scrims — are able to “hear” the visible spectrum, in the form of shifting melodic tones.

Johannes Girardoni, a founder of Chromasonic, said this experience creates “an atmosphere in which physical space appears infinite, at other times enveloping.”

Elsewhere in the exhibition the design team has unpacked how color feels and what it tastes and smells like. The final space presents a tableau of Google products in different colors, like the Google Pixel Watch 2 and the Pixel phone.

“It’s kind of a reveal that brings it all together,” Ms. Ross said.

She added that she hopes visitors will gain a new appreciation for color’s many dimensions. “After having the experience of what does it sound like, feel like, taste like, look like,” she said, “they’ll never look at color the same way.”

Let There Be Light

The lighting designer Volker Haug and his team have partnered with the architects at Flack Studio to create Me and You, 13 decorative lighting fixtures that have nothing to do with a dog named Boo .

The collaboration between studios, both in Melbourne, Australia, grew out of a mishap. Last year, a vintage wall sconce was being installed in a private residence designed by Flack Studio when the glass broke. Replacing the lamp meant refinishing the wall behind it, and there was no time for that. So David Flack, the firm’s founder, asked Mr. Haug, a longtime acquaintance, to create a new sconce for the square metal wall plate that was already in place.

The success of the ad hoc solution “inspired us to go, ‘Ooh, what else could we do?’” Mr. Haug recalled in a phone call from Melbourne.

The men began knocking out other ideas for lamps based on metal squares, but soon their designs “started getting longer and skinnier, or smaller or rounder,” Mr. Haug said.

The lamp called Bruce is closer to the original conception. First designed by Flack Studio for the Ace Hotel in Sydney, it was revised by the collaborators as a boxy, cast-brass grid laid over textured, glowing glass, which gives it some opacity, “like a bathroom window,” Mr. Haug said. A linear version — a single row of squares — has just been added to the collection.

Me and You can be seen Tuesday through Sunday at Via San Maurilio, 18; volkerhaug.com and flack.studio . — JULIE LASKY

Using Older Spaces for New Talent

Lionel Jadot, a Belgian designer and architect, is partial to retrofitting old manufacturing buildings. His own company, Zaventem Ateliers, occupies a 6,000-square-meter (64,583 square foot) 19th-century paper factory near Brussels. During Milan Design Week he is again transforming a run-down industrial site into a showcase for young talent.

He has organized a display of furniture, lighting, textiles and sculpture by more than 30 designers, studios and artists — mostly from Belgium but also a handful from other countries. All these works are presented in this year’s new location, a 7,300-square-meter (78,577-square-foot) 1950s industrial building near Milan’s Linate Airport, under the name Baranzate Ateliers, its second appearance at Design Week.

“I’m part of a family of makers since six generations,” Mr. Jadot said. “I know what a struggle it is to be in your workshop, to try to produce, to try to connect with people, to create collaboration.”

Many of the pieces straddle the line between furniture and sculpture. Mircea Anghel, a designer in Lisbon, makes tables and chairs from rough stones and polished wood. Studio Élémentaires in Belgium combines bits of the urban fabric (aluminum, motors, reflective filters) with LEDs to create kinetic lighting. KRJST Studio in Belgium weaves tapestries with “the monstrous creatures that haunt our dreams, not as external threats, but rather as mirrors of our own dark side,” said Justine de Moriamé, a founder with Erika Schillebeeckx of the studio, which is displaying examples of such work, including the hanging called Kappa.

The tapestries are inspired by the phenomenon of pareidolia, or the tendency to see shapes or make pictures out of randomness. “It is these harmonious or chaotic reveries that form the basis of our imaginations and personal mythologies,” Ms. Schillebeeckx added.

Baranzate Ateliers is on view Monday through Sunday at Via Gaudenzio Fantoli 16/3; baranzateateliers.com . — STEPHEN TREFFINGER

An earlier version of this article misstated the location of the Baranzate Ateliers exhibition during Milan Design Week. It is in an industrial building near Milan’s Linate Airport, not in the Baranzate municipality northwest of central Milan.

A Fan Hit Olivia Rodrigo With Flowers After She Didn't Accept Them

A fan took "giving flowers" to a whole other level by hitting Olivia Rodrigo with a bouquet after she failed to acknowledge them.

Last year, there was a huge phenomenon of fans throwing things at celebrities.

It started with bebe rexha — she was hit in the face with a phone during a concert..

Then Pink, Drake , Harry Styles , Kelsea Ballerini , and Lil Nas X were all involved in similar incidents.

Pink had ashes thrown at her. Drake had a cellphone hurled at him. Harry was hit with a random object . Kelsea got  hit  in the eye with a bracelet, and Lil Nas X had a sex toy shot in his direction.

Well, I'm sad to report that it's happened again — this time, with singer-songwriter Olivia Rodrigo.

I visited the 'Game of Thrones' studio 5 years after the series finale. The $37 tour reminded me why I love the show.

  • I recently visited the Game of Thrones Studio Tour in Northern Ireland for $37.
  • It offers an exclusive look at the HBO series , which spent millions of dollars on each episode.
  • Even five years after the series finale, the studio is still a worthwhile experience for fans.

Insider Today

It's been five years since the series finale of HBO's "Game of Thrones," but I'm as big a fan as ever.

When a work trip took me to Northern Ireland , I knew I had to detour to the Game of Thrones Studio Tour. By season eight, the HBO drama was spending $15 million per episode , and like any true fan, I wanted a behind-the-scenes look at where some of that money went — and what made the show so visually incredible.

The tour, located in one of the show's original filming locations , Linen Mill Studios, opened in 2022, and standard tickets cost £29.50, or about $37.

I wanted to see just how relevant the studio is today — especially in the lead-up to the new season of the "House of the Dragon" prequel series in June — and if the widespread passion of the fandom is still alive.

It felt like the studio was hidden in plain sight.

buzz brass tour

There's no onsite parking at the studio, so getting there felt like being escorted to some secret location. Luckily, the instructions were clear: Meet at The Boulevard, a large shopping district in Banbridge, Northern Ireland.

From there, a complimentary shuttle took me down a long, formal-looking driveway. It's easy to see how the studio remained low-key during its filming heyday — it's almost as if it's hidden in plain sight.

My excitement overflowed as I stepped off the bus to blasting theme music and a massive Game of Thrones Studio Tour sign. About 10 other visitors immediately began posing for photographs.

After the 10-minute shuttle ride, it took me a good five minutes to reach security and start the experience, but the atmosphere was already infectious. Even the staff seemed genuinely excited to greet me.

The impressive theming immediately drew me in.

buzz brass tour

After passing a dragon skull and armored "guard," the tour started with a green-screen photo while we waited for some dramatic doors to swing open.

A tour guide quickly explained the studio rules — mostly, no touching the exhibits (which were used during filming) and absolutely no photos of the pre-tour movie.

I won't spoil too much, but the short film gave me goosebumps. At the end, the screen parted, and we entered the studio from "beyond the wall."

The studio clearly takes immersion seriously.

buzz brass tour

On the other side of the screen, we were blasted by fog machines before standing toe-to-toe with the Wildlings. Everything was incredibly immersive.

This was one of my favorite rooms. It had elaborate costumes from the show , including coats laden with bones and oysters. I learned that some weighed up to 15 pounds.

I also caught a glimpse of Wun Wun — or, at least, the costume that 7-foot-1 Ian Whyte wore during filming. It supposedly took the actor three to five hours a day to transform into the giant.

It was fun to walk through the different memorable sets.

The studio is made up of a trail of set rooms, including Mess Hall in Castle Black, the Crypts of Winterfell, King's Landing, and the Great Hall of Winterfell.

Costumed mannequins stood in each room to mimic the real scenes from the show.

I learned a lot about the making of the show throughout the tour.

In addition to walking through the sets, I got an insight into the show's creation process.

The 30-foot dragon skull of Balerion the Black Dread took six weeks to make before being shipped to Spain for filming. While standing next to the masterpiece, I could hardly believe that something of its scale could be transported across Europe .

Equally staggering, we learned that the crew went through 52,000 bags of fake snow and 163 tons of propane (for pyrotechnic effects) throughout the series.

Hearing about these intense behind-the-scenes efforts brought the series' magic back to life and made the visit worthwhile for me.

Behind-the-scenes exhibits and interactive experiences made the experience even better.

Other rooms were dedicated to the show's costume design , music creation, and set design. There was even a sword display room that housed famous props like Arya's Needle.

I'd nearly forgotten about the significance of the show's many props before embarking on the tour. But I almost squealed at Jaime Lannister's golden hand.

There were activities throughout the tour, too, including adding your face to the Hall of Faces and creating your own sigil.

I was entranced up until the very end of the experience.

The tour finished at the Iron Throne, a dragon flitting behind the rubble on a digital back wall.

It was a fitting endpoint seeing as it was the location where Jon killed Daenerys, controversially culling her brewing tyranny and ending the series.

I don't think the "Game of Thrones" buzz is going to die down anytime soon.

The studio wasn't packed, but Northern Ireland tends to be a little quieter in February and busier during the Easter holiday and summer. Honestly, I was grateful I missed the heavier crowds.

Overall, the "Game of Thrones" fandom seems to be building momentum rather than slowing down — especially with the second season of "House of the Dragon" looming.

I saw plenty of visitors bringing their children, too, so love for the series seems to be getting passed down to the next generation.

Initially, £29.50 seemed steep to me. But comparably, it's cheap for a studio tour — the Harry Potter Studio Tour in London charges a base price of £53.50.

Plus, I thought it offered great value. It packed so much in and the staff's passion is evident, which makes all the difference for visitors.
