Cool Cruiser

Good morning fellow cruisers! Can anyone tell me if there is a liquor store near the Nassau cruise port? We'd like to pick up some champagne and/or wine to take on the second leg of our B2B. Thanks!

there are several within a short walk from the pier. You will not have a problem finding one

Yes, if you walk one block into Nassau harbor, there is a street with several liquor stores on it. All have very reasonable prices that are cheaper than the ship, and much less than US prices.

I always go the the same one, near the straw market and can even buy a beer and walk down Nassau streets while enjoying it.

Will the liquor stores be open on a Sunday?

If the ships are in port...they will be open.

Compared to prices in the USA, they were cheaper, but compared to prices on our ship, not very much. In fact we didn't buy anything there as we just didn't think they were cheap. Prices are much cheaper in St Marteen, St Thomas etc.

We ended up buying a few bottles of Bacardi Select which were cheaper on the ship than in port.

I have personally seen prices go both ways. You need to know what you are looking for...price it out on the ship and then when in port price it there. I have seen it a few bucks cheaper in port and then I have seen a better deal on the ship. And with most cruise lines...keep in mind you will not be allowed to take the bottle back to your room to enjoy while on the cruise, it will be stored by ship security until the final evening of your cruise when they will return it to your cabin after dinner sometime.

I am wanting to buy some Havana Club rum from Cuba (not the one Bacardi makes) in Nassau. Anyone ever seen it there? The liquor stores I have checked in town have it, but they are all closed on Sundays.

My other port stops are St. Thomas and San Juan (won't sell it there because of US laws) and Grand Turk.

Bronxcutie

I am hoping to pick up Hennessy Pure White. I doubt

Norwegian sells it.

  • 2 years later...

I am hoping to find Captain Morg Sherry Oak and Old J. They don't have either in my area anymore and silly Pennsylvania won't allow us to ship it in.

They will have it in St. Thomas. We were just there this week and it was plentiful in the stores. It was also available in St.Maartan, so it probably is available in Grand Turk as well. I believe Obama lifted the prohibitions on Cuban Rums.

By: Editor-in-Chief Updated: May 26, 2023

Nassau is a well-known shopping paradise for cruise passengers looking for bargains and duty-free goods like jewelry, watches, and accessories, but also spirits and perfumes. Atlantis has quite a few high-end shops, but the best stores in Nassau are on Bay Street.

On the main street of Nassau you will find boutiques like Breitling, Cartier, David Yurman, Fendi, TAG Heuer or Rolex; and the top brands and labels in stores such as Colombian Emeralds, Diamonds International, Effy Jewelry, Sophia Fiori, John Bull, Little Switzerland, Quantum or Bacardi.

Good to Know

VAT - Since January 2015, 7.5% VAT (Value Added Tax) has been mandatory but cruise ship passengers like any other visitor, enjoy a Zero-Rated VAT on purchases above $25.00 - clothes are VAT-free on purchases above $100.00. Most shops display signs stating "Authorized Tax and Duty-Free Goods". Opening Hours: Monday to Saturday - between 9 AM and 5 PM - and on Sundays when and if cruise ships are in port.

Probably the best overall wine and spirit store in the Bahamas - in terms of range and value it's hard to beat the main Butler and Sands store in the city.

Liquor Stores in the Bahamas

If you find yourself in downtown Nassau, near to the port on Bay Street, you won't help but notice the huge number of liquor stores. Visitors, especially those coming from the cruise ships flock downtown to stock up on essential liquor supplies.

A particular favorite with visitors is the locally produced rum. Rum made in the Bahamas has an exceptional natural coconut aroma to it. The first time we tried it, we thought coconut had been added, but we were reassured that was the natural flavor.

You can also buy local coconut rum, where the local coconuts have been used to make it - this product is really popular for making cocktails.

The local beers of Kalik and Sands are also really popular. Many visitors like to stock up on local beers to take back to the ship, even if they are all-inclusive. The reason is simple - they taste good!

When it comes to buying wine, most liquor stores in the Bahamas have a range of regular brands on sale that should suit the majority of customers - plenty of good value (for the Bahamas), easy-drinking wines.

Buying Good Wine in the Bahamas

As mentioned, some visitors to the island struggle when it comes to finding premium quality wines from around the world. However, that's not to say that you can't buy them, you just need to know where to look.

If you are looking for a good store to buy wine, you should probably think about heading to the flagship Butler and Sands store to the West of Nassau city, on Bay Street. They have a very good selection.

In the same area, there is also Balduccino's supermarket and deli which has a selection of fine wines on sale.

Also if anyone knows the general cost. The excursion company was $60 for a case of beer. We thought that might be high but maybe it's the normal rate.

Any info would be helpful!

WOW. A case of beer at home is $20.

How many to a case please? Thanks

Cool Cruiser

Good morning fellow cruisers! Can anyone tell me if there is a liquor store near the Nassau cruise port? We'd like to pick up some champagne and/or wine to take on the second leg of our B2B. Thanks!

WHATSINPORT.COM: YOUR CRUISE GUIDE TO 1200 PORTS OF CALL

Interactive world cruise map, home | cruise ships | port expenses | hints and tips, nassau bahamas cruise port guide.

Prince George Wharf, with three long piers with six berths, near Rawson Square is in the heart of Nassau. Downtown is less than a 15 minute walk away.

On stepping ashore at Prince George Wharf, cruisers will disembark through the colorful Festival Place Welcome center, designed to resemble a Bahamian village with stands selling arts, crafts and tempting island treats such as coconut and pineapple tarts.

On Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays the atmosphere is spiced up with local Bahamian music.

There is a tour desk where cruise passengers can get general details about the islands and the excursions available, a post office and a communications center with pay phones, internet kiosk, Wi Fi, etc.

Sightseeing:

From casinos, cabaret shows, magic acts & acrobatics to moonlight dinner cruises or theatre performances, there are more options for nightlife in Nassau and Paradise Island than there are hours in the day to experience them all.

Scoot around the island on a rented motor scooter, rental car or bicycle (be sure to drive on the left-hand side of the road, British style); or cruise out to spend the day scuba diving or snorkeling the coral reefs; go fishing for dolphin, tuna or wahoo; play tennis or golf; take an Out Island excursion or just lay back to snooze in the sun. Visit the historic forts or shop for bargains along Bay Street, Nassau's famous international shopping location. Liquor, perfume, jewelry and china are favorite items for duty-free shoppers, along with fine local and international crafts plus native goods, from handmade yards of batik to fine jewelry & Rolex watches. The best buys and shopping bargains can be found among the straw craft items and souvenirs at the Straw Market.  The stores on Bay Street are flanked by picturesque, pastel pink-colored Colonial-style Government buildings erected in the early 1800s by Loyalists, including the Houses of Parliament, the old Colonial Secretary's Office and the Supreme Court all surrounding a marble statue of Queen Victoria. Parliament Square in downtown Nassau Bahamas is the traditional center of Bahamian government. Each season, the Opening Ceremonies of the Supreme Court fill the square with pomp and pageantry. Further downtown stands Fort Charlotte . Built in 1788, it is complete with moat, open battlements, even dungeons.

Walking tour of Nassau .

Tours Excursions Transportation:

The historic center of Nassau occupies an area about twelve blocks long and six blocks deep, and can be easily explored on foot.

Taxis are plentiful and can be hired in advance or flagged down in the street. Look for the Bahamahost sticker in the window. Rates are fixed, but surcharges apply for more than two people. Tips are about 15 per cent. The fare is $9 plus $2 bridge toll between downtown Nassau and Paradise Island.

Many taxis also offer tours, in general fun and not expensive.

The Nassau Water Taxi departs every 30 minutes from behind the Straw Market to Paradise Island, operating daily from 9 a.m. - 6 p.m. The round trip cost is $8. Notes: Though the trip takes just 10 minutes, the water taxi may not depart on time.

Choose between jumping on one of the many bikes for hire or rent a motor scooter which costs from US$25(£13.50) to US$35 (£19) a day.

Nearby Places:

Nassau's Sister Island - Paradise Island Venture east on Bay Street from the city's core and you come to a bridge that takes you to "Paradise," with posh luxury resorts (including the world famous Atlantis Bahamas Resort), the Caribbean's largest casino, plus exciting nightlife on an island formerly called "Hog."

There are two ways to get to the Atlantis--ferry or taxi. The taxi is much quicker and certainly easier--about $6 per person each way. The ferry is $4 each way($8 round trip), but it can be crowded and you have to wait until they fill the boat up.

As you go east, just past the bridge to Paradise Island, there is the boating heart of Nassau / Paradise Island with a number of marinas with boats for hire. The East End is also a delightful residential area showing the full flavor of Nassau's colonial past in its architecture & horticulture. Big houses with wide breezy verandas face the sea.

Pearl Island Located just eight miles from Nassau and one mile east of Paradise Island, Pearl Island is known for its warm, crystal-clear waters, stunning natural beauty, white-sand beaches, and its iconic Lighthouse!

Shopping and Food

For more traditional and authentic local goods, try the Straw Market in Bay Street – reputed to be one of the largest in the world – and haggle with the stall-holders for their handmade baskets, hats, jewelry, and wood carvings.

Conch fritters, grouper fingers, peas 'n' rice, boiled fish, johnnycake plus guava duff are just a few of the tasty dishes, all of which go "just right" with a tropical drink in your hand.

The local currency is the Bahamian dollar (B$) The Bahamian dollar is on a par with the US dollar, and both currencies are accepted throughout the country. Always make sure you keep an eye on your belongings as it's hard to spot pickpockets in large crowds.
