Chelsea announces 2024 summer tour in united states, share this article.

Chelsea has announced that the club will once again go on a summer tour of the United States in 2024.

The Blues did not confirm any venues, opponents or dates for the preseason tour, saying that information would be announced in the coming weeks.

Chelsea played five matches in the U.S. last summer: three against Premier League sides, one against Wrexham and one against Borussia Dortmund. It was the second straight year the Blues had toured the U.S. during their preseason.

Last month, Arsenal, Manchester United and Liverpool all confirmed plans to travel to the United States ahead of the 2024-25 season.

Arsenal will play against Manchester United at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles on July 27. The Gunners will then face Liverpool at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia on July 31.

Manchester United will also take on Liverpool at Williams-Brice Stadium in Columbia, South Carolina on August 3.

In addition to that heavyweight trio, Aston Villa has announced that it will also return to the USA this summer. The club has confirmed a July 27 friendly against the Columbus Crew, with more matches expected to be announced shortly.

Chelsea reveal USA tour squad with Wesley Fofana, Reece James and Romelu Lukaku among absentees

Chelsea have revealed a 29-man travelling squad for their pre-season tour of the United States .

The Blues are heading across the Atlantic for a busy summer trip that includes five matches in as many different cities, with new boss Mauricio Pochettino taking charge of the team for the first time against Wrexham in an FC Series clash in Chapel Hill, North Carolina on Wednesday night.

That is followed by the inaugural Premier League Summer Series, in which Chelsea will face a trio of familiar opponents in Brighton (July 22), Newcastle (July 26) and Fulham (July 30) in Philadelphia, Atlanta and Landover respectively. The tour culminates in a meeting with Borussia Dortmund in Chicago on August 2.

Chelsea have now confirmed their travelling party led by Pochettino, which includes new signings Christopher Nkunku, Nicolas Jackson, Angelo Gabriel, Diego Moreira and Dujuan Richards, plus Malo Gusto and Andrey Santos, who both joined in January before being sent straight back out on loan. Young Jamaica striker Richards will not play in any of the matches though, having been designated in a “training only” role.

However, Wesley Fofana has been left behind entirely due to a knee injury, which the club say is currently being assessed.

Also staying back at Cobham due to injury are Fofana’s fellow French centre-back Benoit Badiashile and goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli, with striker Armando Broja similarly not travelling as he continues his comeback from ACL surgery. The absence of both Fofana and Badiashile should lead to a starting role for Levi Colwill.

There is also no Reece James in Chelsea’s initial squad, but his absence has been confirmed as merely precautionary due to illness, with the England right-back expected to fly out to join his team-mates as soon as he has recovered.

As expected, there is no Romelu Lukaku in the group as Chelsea continue to work to secure his exit with Juventus now leading the race for his signature after Inter Milan withdrew their ÂŁ34million bid and walked away from talks over a permanent deal.

Juventus have also made a ÂŁ32m offer for Lukaku that includes a further ÂŁ2m in add-ons, but any deal is conditional on the Serie A giants selling Serbian striker Dusan Vlahovic first.

Al-Hilal also want Lukaku, but the Belgian international would prefer a return to Italy over a move to Saudi Arabia, despite the offer of a massive pay rise.

There is similarly no Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in Chelsea’s US squad, with the former Arsenal captain also surplus to requirements at Stamford Bridge amid interest from French club Marseille.

Other notable absentees include Callum Hudson-Odoi, who is in talks with Fulham after returning from a loan spell at Bayer Leverkusen, and Hakim Ziyech, who is being linked with Napoli after the collapse of a proposed ÂŁ8m switch to Saudi Arabian side Al-Nassr.

Pochettino has taken plenty of younger players to the US, including Lucas Bergstrom, Eddie Beach, Jamie Cumming, Bashir Humphreys, Ian Maatsen, Alfie Gilchrist, Cesare Casadei and Mason Burstow.

Man United and Chelsea planning US tour for preseason games

by March 28, 2023

chelsea pre season tour usa

Chelsea and Man United are in the planning stages of tours to the United States to play preseason friendlies this summer , sources told World Soccer Talk.

Multiple sources have told World Soccer Talk that Chelsea are likely to train in a location near the eastern coast of the United States, possibly in North Carolina, and to use that as their hub in order to minimize travel times.

Meanwhile, sources have also told World Soccer Talk that several clubs have been approached by Chelsea as potential opponents this summer including Wrexham AFC , Leeds United, Newcastle and Brighton.

Whilst early details are thin, the London club are hoping to use Todd Boehly’s connections to maximize their commercial value in the country.

Furthermore, the raft of new players that the American owner has brought into the club will be integral to bringing crowds to these aforementioned friendlies.

Fans will be eager to get a glance at Mykhailo Mudryk, Enzo Fernandez and Benoit Badiashile as Chelsea plan on a second successive pre-season trip to the United States.

Man United and Chelsea US tours would be ideal this summer

One of the few things the Glazer family and their acolytes got right was an assessment that on-pitch performance didn’t really have an impact on Manchester United’s financial might.

Generally, this has been true, however their global popularity has somewhat slipped, especially in areas where fans aren’t necessarily born into a specific culture that a club represents.

Supporting Man United hasn’t been either fashionable or fun in recent years, but the club retains mammoth support in the United States.

The recent upturn in sporting success under Erik ten Hag has only served to rejuvenate the club’s wide fan-base, and the club are looking to take advantage of their renewed popularity with a return to the United States in 2023.

As per ESPN , Manchester United will likely have a friendly against Wrexham in July, with San Diego seen as the most likely host of the match.

Meanwhile, sources have told World Soccer Talk that Manchester United are considering a friendly match to be played in Las Vegas this summer. In related news, Barcelona and Real Madrid are also considering Las Vegas as a destination for a game this summer.

Manchester United haven’t toured America since 2018, back when Jose Mourinho was still coach.

COVID-19 had a huge impact on potential tour plans during the height of the pandemic, but the club are now able to travel freely.

Whilst there has been no official club confirmation of these tour plans from either Chelsea or Manchester United, Wrexham (owned by Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney) have released a statement on their summer plans.

“The club can confirm that our previously publicized plans to tour the US during pre-season are at an advanced stage, but are not as yet finalized,” the statement read.

“Full details of the games the club will play in and where, will be released across the club’s communication channels when they are confirmed.”

Man United ownership still ‘up in the air’

Whilst ESPN has suggested that Manchester United will be heading to Las Vegas as part of their tour, some supporters wouldn’t want to wager on who will be their owners once the tour begins.

The Glazer family remain as unpopular a family as any in the North West of England and have opened exploratory avenues with regards to new investment/a full sale.

Sources indicate that the preference is a deal is done before the end of the current season, which puts Man United’s pre-season tour to the United States as the first of a brand-new era for the club.

Chelsea U.S. pre-season tour squad: Wesley Fofana, Reece James, Benoit Badiashile and Romelu Lukaku miss out

Chelsea, Reece James, Wesley Fofana

Wesley Fofana has not been included in Chelsea ’s 29-player squad for their pre-season tour of the United States due to a knee injury.

Chelsea confirmed the 22-year-old defender will remain at the club’s Cobham training ground to be assessed.

Reece James will also not travel to the U.S. as a precaution due to illness but will join up with the squad once he has recovered and is expected to fly out next week.

Romelu Lukaku is not included in the squad, with the club actively working towards a solution over his future.

There is a place on the plane for new signing Angelo Gabriel following his move from Santos on Monday, alongside fellow summer arrivals Christopher Nkunku , Nicolas Jackson and Diego Moreira .

Dujuan Richards has also been selected after joining the club from Phoenix All Stars Academy but has been named as a training player only.

Goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli , defender Benoit Badiashile and forward Armando Broja also miss out due to injury, with the trio remaining at Cobham to work on their return to fitness.

Badiashile has been sidelined since May with a hamstring injury which is set to keep him sidelined for an extended period.

The injury to Fofana coupled with the prolonged absence of Badiashile means Chelsea will likely be even more eager to keep hold of fellow centre-back Levi Colwill .

Chelsea rejected a £30million ($37.3m) bid for the defender from Brighton & Hove Albion, the club where he spent the 2022-23 season on loan, in June. Colwill is also wanted by Liverpool , but he now stands a good of starting against Jurgen Klopp’s side in Chelsea’s opening Premier League game on August 13 due to Badiashile’s and Fofana’s injuries.

The Athletic reported on Monday that Fiorentina’s Igor Julio is on Brighton’s alternative list of targets if they cannot re-sign Colwill.

Chelsea play Brighton, Newcastle United and Fulham as part of the inaugural Premier League Summer Series during their tour of the U.S., in addition to friendlies against Wrexham and Borussia Dortmund .

Chelsea confirm 29-man squad for USA pre-season tour

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel has named the 29 players he wants to work with during the team’s pre-season tour in the United States.

The Chelsea players have departed for Los Angeles, where they will spend the next week for a summer training camp, on Saturday.

Among last season’s first team members (Romelu Lukaku and Saul Niguez excluded), only N’Golo Kante and Ruben Loftus-Cheek have not made the travelling squad due to their vaccination status.

Several returning loanees; Conor Gallagher, Billy Gilmour, Ethan Ampadu, Michy Batshuayi, Emerson, Tino Anjorin, and Levi Colwill, also made the cut.

Unfortunately, Ian Maatsen and Dujon Sterling, who took part in during pre-season at Cobham, did not get picked by Tuchel.

The manager, however, has included two academy stars; young goalkeeper, Teddy Sharman-Lowe and versatile midfielder, Harvey Vale.

There were other academy players involved in pre-season in the last week, such as Charlie Webster and Lewis Hall, but were not selected but Tuchel for the tour.

Chelsea pre-season 2023/24: Fixtures and schedule

  • Mauricio Pochettino takes charge of first Chelsea pre-season
  • Blues will travel to the US to face Wrexham, Newcastle and Borussia Dortmund
  • Club finished 12th in Premier League last season

By James Cormack | Jul 24, 2023, 2:35 PM GMT+1

Mauricio Pochettino will take charge of his first pre-season as Chelsea boss

Todd Boehly's unprecedented cash influx is yet to pay dividends in west London, with three managers (four if you count brief interim Bruno Saltor) succumbing under the American's watch. Now, it's Mauricio Pochettino's turn.

2022/23 was Chelsea's least productive campaign of the Premier League era as they finished 12th with a poultry 44 points. Despite the seemingly endless stream of cash at the club's disposal, Poch's task is a mammoth one. The Blues' squad last season, while talented, was woefully unbalanced and it's going to take more than the current transfer window to sort things out.

Nevertheless, as is the case for every new manager, pre-season is significant for Pochettino. Here's what we know about Chelsea's summer plans so far.

Where are Chelsea going for 2023/24 pre-season?

LONDON CALLING! Chelsea are coming to the USA! đŸ‡ș🇾 The Blues kick-off their 2023 pre-season tour with 3 games across the @PremierLeague Summer Series! Further fixtures and locations to be announced. 👀 — Chelsea FC (@ChelseaFC) April 11, 2023

Chelsea confirmed earlier this year they would travel to the United States to compete in the new Premier League Summer Series .

The Blues have frequently visited the US in the past, including last summer, and they'll be one of six clubs competing in a brand new pre-season event that will take place across five major East Coast cities.

However, their first unofficial game under Pochettino was a 5-0 thrashing of National League champions Wrexham , where Ian Maatsen netted twice and new signing Christopher Nkunku also got on the scoresheet.

In their first Summer Series game, Chelsea were triumphant 4-3 over Roberto De Zerbi's Brighton as Nicolas Jackson provided a glimpse of his potential, scoring once and setting up two more. Nkunku, Mykhailo Mudryk and Conor Gallagher also struck after Brighton, who had defender Jan Paul van Hecke sent off, had taken the lead through Danny Welbeck. Joao Pedro's penalty and another late effort from Deniz Undaz ran the Blues close until full time.

Chelsea also take on fellow Premier League outfits Newcastle and Fulham as part of the tournament. They round off their trip to the US with a clash with Borussia Dortmund in Chicago.

Chelsea's pre-season tour is finally over. The Blues have spent just over two weeks in the United States and will already be close to arriving home after five unbeaten games, 13 goals scored and plenty of positive momentum.

The question is: will Pochettino be kept awake on his overnight flight as he looks back on the last fortnight or will he be able to sleep soundly after his pre-season endeavours? Certainly he shouldn't suffer too many nightmares, though injury to Christopher Nkunku may lead to a degree of restlessness.

Certainly there is more cohesion than 12 months ago. Pochettino has brought more positivity after a difficult 2022/23 season.

However, the west London side have relied upon a large group of stars over the course of the tour with the trip going better for some than others. football.london takes a look at the winners and losers from the tour.

Ian Maatsen - Having returned to the club following a successful loan at Burnley, in many ways it was easy to see the Dutch defender departing the club to continue his progression. Considering he's not even played at left back, where he has perhaps thrived the most, is mightily impressive.

READ MORE : What Mykhailo Mudryk did to inspire Chelsea as Mauricio Pochettino drops major Liverpool hint

Maatsen has played on the left, right and as a 10, and impressed with his intelligence and delivered a very positive impression on Pochettino. It would appear he would have a very strong chance of being involved in Chelsea's squad, albeit perhaps not in his usual position.

Nicolas Jackson - The Senegal international looked to be the pinnacle of composure during his run in Chelsea's opening three matches. Goals against Brighton and Newcastle helped Jackson's case to lead the Blues' line but perhaps even more impressive has been his all-round play to combine with the likes of Christopher Nkunku and Mykhailo Mudryk. Set to start versus Liverpool.

Bashir Humphreys - A surprise package of pre-season who has played far more than most expected. The 20-year-old has impressed Chelsea's coaching staff on his way to the fifth most minutes played in the squad. Not a certainty to remain with the team for the season but looks a more confident player following his loan to Paderborn and would seem to have improved his prospects for another loan in the coming season.

Andrey Santos - While the Brazilian youngster did not feature in the final friendly versus Dortmund, he is another that has shined across the Atlantic. The 19-year-old has looked a formidable opponent in the centre of the pitch and rarely looked out of place over the course of the summer.

Santos may not start against Liverpool but looks set to be invovled with the group moving forwards, particularly with no experienced midfielder signed in the form of Moises Caicedo. Chelsea's January signing looks more comfortable in deep positions than Conor Gallagher and should find opportunities.

Levi Colwill - Pochettino said that he would have to deserve to start against Liverpool and Colwill has oozed class in his outings so far. A knock to Trevoh Chalobah, in addition to the issues currently suffered by Wesley Fofana and Benoit Badiashile, has opened up the opportunity for Colwill to start from the beginning of the season having agreed a new contract with the club. He won't give his place up easily.

Mason Burstow - The young forward was not even expected to go on the trip and seemed to be heading out on loan before Chelsea flew to North Carolina to begin the pre-season tour. The former Charlton ace was made to wait for his opportunity but ultimately earned a substitute appearance and a start versus Fulham. Little will compare to his first goal for the club against Borussia Dortmund as he helped the side secure a draw and maintain their unbeaten record.

Pre-season purgatory

Christopher Nkunku - The Frenchman looks electric in and around the box and he's already showed the goalscoring talents he was signed for. If his injury is in anyway serious having played on Soldier Field's pitch, it will be difficult to see him and Chelsea as anything but losers.

Lewis Hall - Chelsea's breakout start of 2022/23 has had to make do with fleeting appearances and more than ever looks in need of a loan, particularly following Maatsen's progress.

Trevoh Chalobah - Despite the knock picked up against Fulham, Chalobah helped keep Chelsea's defence together over pre-season. However with the Blues' progress to sign Axel Disasi to reinforce the backline after Wesley Fofana's injury, understandably Chalobah's position will be questioned and he will wonder if his future lies elsewhere.

Raheem Sterling - The winger has been unable to maintain a sustained impact across pre-season when others in his position have shown promise. There remains lofty expectations following his arrival from Manchester City and should his form not improve, his impacts will provide a storyline to Chelsea's season.

Marc Cucurella - After a refreshing opening press conference in North Carolina, Cucurella has struggled to transform his enthusiasm and confidence there into a spotless performance on the pitch. Errors remain present in his outings despite some good moments and his confidence on the pitch requires some solidity to build from.

“We are proud to announce our highly anticipated return to the USA, providing a great environment for the squad to prepare for the season ahead,” said Ben Latty, the club’s commercial director.

“Pre-season tours always present exceptional opportunities for our supporters, the team and our official partners to engage in memorable experiences within a key focus market for the club.

“We know millions of super-passionate American fans love this club and what we stand for, a fact underlined when our televised game with Arsenal in December became the most-watched Premier League game in US history.

“The USA is an important market for the club and our partners; with 67 official supporters clubs, international academies across 12 states, and the USA being the number one international market for our merchandising business.

“We eagerly await the opportunity to bring the club closer to the fans and look forward to playing in these iconic venues.”
