The PGA Tour is embarking on a historic season in 2023. With several elevated events, prize money is at an all-time high. In total, the tour will sanction 47 events in 2023, totaling over $560,000,000 in money. So which events have the largest purses? Here are the events that will give players the largest novelty checks.

Largest Purses on the PGA Tour

When you look at the 2023 PGA Tour schedule, you’ll find purses that range from around $4 million all the way up to $25 million. New for this year are those elevated events that are seeing significant increases from 2022 with $20 million at stake.

The FedEx Cup technically does not have a purse, with its payouts considered a bonus pool, but the season-ending event is again worth a whopping $75 million. The changes for 2023 are designed to keep the PGA Tour’s best players gunning for those top spots, while allowing for significant financial opportunities for players who find themselves in the middle of the pack throughout the season.

1. Tour Championship

Purse: $75,000,000 | Winner’s Share: $18,000,000

All roads lead to East Lake Golf Club where the Tour Championship winner is simultaneously crowned FedEx Cup Champion . Anyone who plays in the event is already in the top 30 for FedEx Cup points, so they’re leaving Atlanta with a nice paycheck. Rory McIlroy reigned supreme in 2022, on his way to regaining his World No. 1 status.

2. The Players Championship

Purse: $25,000,000 | Winner’s Share: $4,500,000

Widely considered the best field in all of golf, The Players Championship has always carried the “fifth major” title. The 2023 purse is up $5 million from a season ago, to $25 million, so the pressure on the historic island green 17th hole at TPC Sawgrass will be even more intense. In 2021, Justin Thomas shot a final-round 68 to best Lee Westwood by one.

T3. U.S. Open

Purse: $20,000,000 | Winner’s Share: $3,600,000

In what is widely considered the toughest test of any tournament, Wyndham Clark won the U.S. Open at Los Angeles Country Club in 2023, cashing a $3,600,000 check for claiming his first major championship.

T3. Genesis Invitational

Tiger Woods hosts the game’s best at historic Riviera Country Club for the Genesis Invitational. This event gets a bump of $8 million for 2023. Last year, Joaquin Niemann fought off a Sunday 65 from Collin Morikawa to win by two stokes.

T3. Arnold Palmer Invitational

Another elevated event for 2023, the Arnold Palmer Invitational brings a stellar field to Bay Hill Club and Lodge to compete and pay homage to The King, Arnold Palmer. As part of his historic 2022 season, Scottie Scheffler won this event.

T3. WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play

Austin Country Club hosts the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play which pits the game’s best in a bracket-style tournament. Like the API and Genesis, the purse for the Dell Technologies Match Play has gone up significantly for 2023. The Match Play is yet another event Scottie Scheffler won in 2022.

T3. The Memorial

June at Muirfield Village is a staple in the PGA Tour schedule and Jack Nicklaus will be there to host those looking for a share at the elevated purse. Billy Horschel cleared the field by four shots in 2022.

T3. FedEx St. Jude Championship

One of the PGA Tour’s most feel-good events, the FedEx St. Jude Classic is held at TPC Southwind in Memphis, Tennessee, and benefits the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Will Zalatoris had one of his debut moments at this event in 2022 when he won in a playoff over Sepp Straka.

T3. BMW Championship

The BMW Championship is the FedEx Cup’s rotational gem that catapults the top 30 to the Tour Championship. In 2023, the event returns to Olympia Fields Country Club outside of Chicago with a $20 million purse. Patrick Cantlay will be the defending champion after winning in 2022 at Wilmington Country Club.

10. Masters Tournament

Purse: $18,000,000 | Winner’s Share: $3,240,000

The season’s first major championship , and the most recognizable to the average golf fan, the Masters is one of the pinnacles of the game. Jon Rahm snatched a $3,240,000 check from the $18,000,000 purse for winning in 2023.

11. PGA Championship

Purse: $17,500,000 | Winner’s Share: $3,100,000

In recent years the PGA Championship shifted to May, and 2023 brought the event to Oak Hill Country Club in Rochester, New York. Brooks Koepka took home the PGA Championship's first-ever $3 million-plus winner's check for his two-stroke win over Scottie Scheffler and Viktor Hovland.

12. British Open

Purse: $16,500,000 | Winner’s Share: $3,000,000

The year’s final major is the oldest tournament in golf, the British Open. This year, the wind and drizzle will likely be on display at Royal Liverpool. And, like the other three majors, the seven-figure winner's check will start with a 3, checking in at an even $3,000,000.

Here's What We Learned About Top Tournaments

We analyzed 12 years of pga tour tournament purses.

The controversial LIV Golf Invitational Series is set to offer a total $225M of prize money, with each regular event carrying a purse of $25M. Their first event in London dwarfed not only the week’s competing events, but all PGA Tour events this year so far.

It was clear that PGA Tour was trying to defuse the LIV Golf challenge when they raised the purses last year. Carrying the same momentum, on 22 June 2022, they announced raising purse size at eight events for 2022-23 season with an average purse at $20M, while The Players Championship will carry a total purse of $25M. (The magic number?)

We wanted to know just how much more money is being poured in this race and how it compares to the last decade.

We learned a lot about PGA Tour purses. And I’m sure you will too.

Here is a quick summary of our findings:

Marquee PGA Tour events whose 2023 purses are confirmed have seen a yearly 44% average increase in purse sizes since 2021 editions, 11x more, compared with the average growth of 4% between 2011-2021! (i.e. In the world without the LIV Golf)

Till 2021, no tournament could even add $5M on top of their purse in 2011, except for the Players Championship. However, the current scenario has pushed seven events to have a boost of nearly $10M and one above $8M from their 2021 editions.

Sentry Tournament of Champions received the highest ever single-year boost of 83% for any PGA Tour event, making its average yearly growth 52.7% since its pre-LIV edition of 2021. While the Players Championship, which boats the largest purse of $25M, was the least gaining event at 29% increment .

From the majors, U.S Open has seen the highest rise in purse at 40% from its 2021 value, while the iconic Open Championship had the lowest 21.7% increment . The average increase in purses for all four majors was 29.3% since 2021.

In the last decade, it’s only 3 other times when we saw the raises north of 30% for any prominent PGA Tour event. While there have been 13 such instances in 2022 and 23 purses so far.

The extravagant purse increments for the current season have propelled the average purse per event from $7.93M to $9.17M , nearly a 15.64% jump , while for the previous ten years, it only grew at an average of 2.6% . Meaning it was pretty much steady until the LIV Golf stimulus.

For those who love tables, here is a TL;DR snapshot of some of the data we extracted. You can continue reading to explore more.

PGA Tour purses chart 2011- 2023

Top PGA Tour Tournaments

Top PGA Tour events whose 2023 purses are confirmed have seen a yearly 44% average increase in purse sizes since 2021 editions, 11x more, compared with the average growth of 4% between 2011-2021 without the stimulus of LIV Golf.

This boost comprises a 32% average increase in 2022 and a whopping 55% average increase basis the announcements for 2023.

Now let’s analyze each of these tournaments and the historical growth pattern in their purses.

#1 The Players Championship

As per the study, the largest purse belonged to The Players Championship, even bigger than any of the four men’s majors.

It has jumped from $15M in 2021 to $20M in 2022 (33%) and $25M for 2023 (25%), a $10M jump in just two years . On the other hand, it took them a decade to reach $15M from $9.5M in 2011. The graph below shows yearly rate of increase in purse size .

The Players Championship Purse

#2 FedEx St. Jude Championship

This event has undergone a couple of major reforms resulting in name and location changes. It saw a 55% purse boost in 2019 , when FedEx took over sponsorship of the WGC Invitational and relocated this tournament to Memphis. It was one of the few prominent jumps in purse for any event, comparable to the ones we saw for 2022 and 23.

FedEx St. Jude Purse

#3 BMW Championship

This second last tournament in the FedEx Cup playoff event, was the slowest growing tournament with just 1.7% year-on-year growth in purse value over 10 years, until 2022 when it saw extraordinary 58% growth compared to the year before. It was also announced to have a $20M purse in 2023 .

BMW Championship Purse

#4 Genesis Invitational

Just like the FedEx St. Jude Championship, Genesis Invitational also had other names in the last decade, including Northern Trust Open and Genesis Open. It saw a 26% raise in purse after gaining invitational status in 2020 with Tiger Woods as the host. In 2023, it is set to have a purse of $20M .

Genesis Invitational Purse

#5 Arnold Palmer Invitational

Given Arnold Palmer’s contribution to the game, PGA Tour in an effort to further advance his stature, elevated the Arnold Palmer Invitational’s purse to $8.7M starting in 2017, a 38% year-on-year boost . This tournament is also one of the 7 events having a $20M purse in 2023 .

Arnold Palmer Invitational Purse

#6 Memorial Tournament

Just like Arnold Palmer Invitational, Memorial Tournament grants the winner a three-year exemption. In 2016, PGA Tour in honor of Jack Nicklaus, bumped up its purse by 37% from previous year, to $8.5M. With $20M in 2023 , it is going to be one of the four tournaments with a jump of nearly 67% .

Memorial Tournament Purse

#7 WGC Match Play

Currently going by the name WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play, this tournament has never seen a notable boost in the last decade, until 2022 when it broke through the stagnancy by 14% boost . It is now set to get a $20M purse like the others mentioned above.

WGC Match Play Purse

#8 Sentry Tournament of Champions

Tournament of Champions, reinstated as a season opener for 2024, had names including the SBS Tournament of Champions and Hyundai Tournament of Champions in the past decade. By purse size, it was never in the top listers and showed just a 1.8% yearly growth until the recent announcement that beefed up their purse to a staggering $15M for 2023 . This increment has made Sentry the highest gainer of post-LIV time so far, at average 52.7% growth from 2021 .

Sentry Tournament of Champions Purse

Four Major Championships

The four majors in 2022 have collectively seen an average increase of 29.3% from 2021, with the U.S Open getting the highest rise in purse at 40%, and the iconic Open Championship getting the lowest 21.7% increment.

The PGA Tour does not directly run any of the majors. Hence, they were not part of the PGA Tour’s announcement of 2023 purses.

However, with a 55% boost in purses of 8 marquee events for 2023, there is a possibility of a similar surge in 2023 for the majors as well.

#1 The U.S. Open

With the latest announcement by USGA to set the U.S. Open purse at $17.5 Million, it became the highest paying out of the 4 major tournaments. Though we do not know their plans for 2023, 2022 increment alone amounts to 40% year-on-year growth in purse value which is 8 times more than traditional growth they had seen.

The U.S. Open Golf Purse

#2 Masters Tournament

This highly regarded and steadily growing major championship increased its purse by 30.4% in 2022 . This tournament was special since Tiger Woods was going to make his first competitive shot since the 2020 Masters.

Masters Tournament Purse

#3 PGA Championship

This major championship did not see much increment in the last decade, except for the year 2014, when its purse increased from $8M to $10M . The next significant boost of 25% was only seen in 2022 .

PGA Championship Purse

#4 The Open Championship

Open Championship has not restricted players from playing in the iconic 150th Open, even if they have participated in LIV Golf event. R&A took this decision suiting their slogan Golf is open to all .

Data shows that the Open has seen an average yearly boost of 4.8% in the past 10 years. In 2022 though, their purse has seen a 22% jump announced by R&A.

Open Championship Purse

The Average Purse Per Event - By Season

Finally, we also analyzed the average purse per event, comprising all the official money events on the PGA Tour calendar from 2011 to 2022.

It revealed that the unprecedented purse increments in the current season have propelled the average purse per event to $9.17M, nearly a 15.64% jump from previous year, while it only grew at an average of 2.6% during previous ten years.

The below graph indicates it was steady between $7-8M for past few years until the advent of LIV Golf!

Putting it all together...

Here is an infographic summarizing our significant findings. Feel free to share it on your site or social media.

pga tour events ranked by purse

Our Methodology:

  • We extracted the details of tournament purse sizes, between 2011 and 2022 from the official PGA Tour website. This data was further appended with the 2023 prize money announcements by PGA Tour for select events.
  • Next we calculated the year-on-year increase in purse size for all top events from 2011 till 2023. It provided a clear picture of historical trends in purse growth for all the preeminent events.
  • Finally, we compared the average Y-o-Y growth after the advent of the LIV golf scenario, with the average Y-o-Y growth in the decade before. (i.e. 2021-23 vs 2011-21)
  • For the major championships, the comparison is between 2021-22 vs 2011-21, since their 2023 purses are not announced.
  • We have used publically available data for this study and ensured to produce accurate stats. Feel free to contact us if you spot anything that needs to be corrected.

It was thrilling to do this analysis against the backdrop of a groundbreaking situation in our beloved sport.

On average, the top event purses have gone up by 43.7% , while a yearly growth for  the last decade (2011-21) was merely 4% .

Also, the  average purse per event has a 15,64% year-on-year jump , a first in many years.

PGA Tour is in the arms race with the Saudi-backed LIV Golf, banning players who took part in their events and trying to make the tournaments more lucrative for players to stay committed.

It goes about showing how someone’s loss is someone else’s gain.

How much money each of the 2023 pga tour events have up for grabs, share this article.

pga tour events ranked by purse

Money, money and more money.

Prize money on the PGA Tour in 2023 is going to reach unprecedented levels, with 13 events now designated as “elevated”.

This will guarantee the game’s biggest stars will gather more often to compete at events with purses worth $20 million (or more).

Almost all of the elevated events will surpass the majors, not in significance or course, but on the pay scale.

The Players Championship and the Tour Championship will still flaunt the gaudiest paydays, but many of the traditional events will have a brighter spotlight on them in 2023.

Check out the breakdown of the money at each event from Kapalua to East Lake.

2022 Masters

The majors are of course the most prestigious events but that doesn’t make them the richest. These numbers represent the purses from 2022; the 2023 numbers will be revealed the week of the event.

The Tour Championship at East Lake in Atlanta caps the season, and it has the distinction of having the biggest pile of cash on the line. However, the money earned there is “bonus” money and doesn’t count towards a golfer’s official money standings. But it spends just the same.

The FedEx St. Jude and the BMW are now elevated events featuring $20 million in total prize money.

WM Phoenix Open 2022

There will be eight events in 2023 with a $20 million purse, with the WM Phoenix Open the first one on deck. The first event of the calendar year is the Sentry Tournament of Champions, and that will have a purse of $15 million. The Players, already a marquee stop, has the richest pot of all the official money events.

Best of the rest

The “regular” stops on the PGA Tour slate still have some pretty serious cash on the line, with four of them at $9 million or more.

Opposite-field events

Barracuda Championship

There are four events that are played opposite a major or an elevated event but there’s still good money on the line. More importantly, success at one of these opens doors for access to tournaments higher up the pecking order.

38 events in 2023 = big money

To sum it up, the 38 PGA Tour stops being held in 2023 will have total prize money approaching $460,000,000.

By comparison, the 47 events on the entire 2021-22 schedule totaled $421,800,000.

Rory McIlroy won the 2019 Players Championship in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida

Don’t let your eyes deceive you. Just because the courses you see each week on telecasts of the PGA Tour look flawless on your big screen, they’ve all got issues and warts that are constantly being picked apart and complained about by the golfers making their living from shot to shot, and putt to putt, clubhouse to clubhouse.

We polled a handful of those players, as well as some of the nation’s most noted and knowledgeable golf writers and experts, and compiled a ranking of every event on the PGA Tour and the courses where they are played.

We took into consideration the location of the event, its history, its payouts, the likely quality of the fields that compete in the tournament and the courses for each tour stop. Those that paid higher purses may have been elevated over those with better courses, and vice versa, but there was a method to the madness of our results.

Two words — Stableford scoring — illustrate how this alternate event to the WGC event in Memphis the same week is so unique. This points scale encourages aggressive play, since the reward for scoring under par is higher than the penalty for scoring over par.

The event is played on one of the best courses in the West and is known as the Barracuda Championship after Barracuda Networks became the title sponsor in 2014.

The event changed to a team (pairs) competition in 2017, but there’s little pizazz surrounding tournament week in the Big Easy.

The course features 103 bunkers, multiple mounds, and tough greens, all designed on a swamp by Pete Dye.

Golf pros consider the track to be one of the most unforgiving on the PGA Tour schedule.

37. Valspar Championship

But the Valspar Championship still is skipped over my many pros because of the events before it (formerly the Arnold Palmer Invitational and now the Players) and after it (WGC Match Play).

The course’s par-4 16th hole, the opener of the "Snake Pit," is one of the toughest on tour.

35. Desert Classic

Most players — meaning all those that didn’t win the year before but still have a hankering for the islands — begin their calendar seasons with this event (Fall Series, be darned).

The course often is panned for being too easy, but sometimes, these guys deserve a break, too.

33. The Honda Classic

A staple of the Fall Series, the Safeway Open usually sports a less-than-stellar field, even with the Johnny Miller-designed (and partially owned) course and the appeal of wine country.

The event opens the PGA Tour schedule each year.

31. Valero Texas Open

Valero Texas Open

Location: TPC San Antonio AT&T Oaks Course, San Antonio, Texas

Established: 1922

Month played: April

Total purse (winner's share): $7.5 million ($1.35 million)

Bottom Line: Valero Texas Open

Corey Conners after winning the 2019 Valero Texas Open

The Valero Texas Open has plenty of history on tour, but all those good vibes, as well as its burgeoning purse and record-breaking charitable contributions, have taken a back seat in recent years because most of the pros really hate the Greg Norman-designed golf course.

It moved to the week before the Masters in 2019 to help draw a better field.

30. Hero World Challenge

Hero World Challenge

Location: Albany, New Providence, Bahamas

Total purse (winner's share): $3.5 million ($1 million)

Bottom Line: Hero World Challenge

Justin Thomas hits from bunker

This event benefits the Tiger Woods Foundation and is hosted by the man himself, with just 18 players invited to participate and a guaranteed payout.

If you're one of the lucky players to be asked, you would be crazy to let down Tiger, right?

29. Mayakoba Golf Classic

El Camaleon Mayakoba Golf Club

Location: El Chameleon Golf Club, Playa del Carmen, Mexico

Total purse (winner's share): $7.2 million ($1.296 million)

Bottom Line: Mayakoba Golf Classic

Jose Coceres waits to putt

There are a lot worse things than playing golf on the Mexican Riviera, and this event has become one of the Fall Series’ best because of its steady purse increases.

The draw of a week’s vacation in the sun and surf doesn't hurt either.

28. RSM Classic

RSM Classic

Location: Sea Island Resort, Sea Island, Georgia

Bottom Line: RSM Classic

Kevin Kisner at the 2020 RSM Classic

The RSM Classic is played on one of the best courses on tour and deserves a better placement on the schedule.

As it is, it’s the last full-field tournament on the Fall Series, and it’s a fun final run around the course before the doldrums of the holiday season.

27. AT&T Byron Nelson

Adam Scott

Location: Trinity Forest Golf Club, Dallas, Texas

Established: 1944

Month played: May

Total purse (winner's share): $7.9 million ($1.422 million)

Bottom Line: AT&T Byron Nelson

Scenery at AT&T Byron Nelson

The Byron Nelson used to be a player favorite when it was held at TPC Four Seasons in Las Colinas (Irving, Texas) because of the amenities the stop offered families.

The course there was not as popular as the resort, and in the 2017-18 season, the event moved to a new Coore/Crenshaw-designed track that was not player or fan friendly.

26: Wyndham Championship

Wyndham Championship

Location: Sedgefield Country Club’s Ross Course, Greensboro, North Carolina

Month played: August

Total purse (winner's share): $6.2 million ($1.116 million)

Bottom Line: Wyndham Championship

Bud Cauley at the 2020 Wyndham Championship

The Wyndham Championship, played on a peerless course designed by Golden Age architect Donald Ross, represents the last chance for players to earn a spot in the FedEx Cup.

Here, in 1965, the legendary Sam Snead, less than two months shy of age 53, set PGA Tour standards for his eighth win at an event and became the oldest winner of a tournament.

Both records still stand.

25. Arnold Palmer Invitational

Arnold Palmer Invitational

Location: Bay Hill Club and Lodge, Orlando, Florida

Established: 1966

Total purse (winner's share): $9.1 million ($1.602 million)

Bottom Line: Arnold Palmer Invitational

Bryson DeChambeau

Arnold Palmer didn't start the Arnold Palmer Invitational, but he bought the resort and its two golf courses and placed his fingerprints on every corner of the property.

The event wouldn't be as popular as it is now if it wasn’t so associated with the King, but it’s still a fun course to watch and play golf on.

24. The CJ Cup at Nine Bridges

CJ Cup

Location: Nine Bridges Golf Club, Jeju Island, South Korea

Established: 2017

Total purse (winner's share): $9.5 million ($1.710 million)

Bottom Line: The CJ Cup at Nine Bridges

Justin Thomas after wining the 2019 CJ Cup

The CJ Cup is set on the other side of the world, but the course, ranked among the top 50 ever built, is as flawless as it is tough.

Hall of Fame golfer Chi Chi Rodriguez once called the course the "Taj Mahal of golf" because every hole looks like a postcard.

23. Farmers Insurance Open

Torrey Pines Golf Course

Location: Torrey Pines Golf Course (South Course), La Jolla, California

Established: 1952

Total purse (winner's share): $7.1 million ($1.278 million)

Bottom Line: Farmers Insurance Open

Jon Rahm,Adam Scott, and Viktor Hovland walk on sixth fairway

The first two days of the Farmers Insurance Open are split between the North and South Course, with the best scores at the cutline carded on the easier North.

There’s little middle ground between players about the South course. They either really like it or really hate it, but the views make for a great day of golf.

22. Travelers Championship

Travelers Championship

Location: TPC River Highlands, Cromwell, Connecticut

Month played: June

Bottom Line: Travelers Championship

Dustin Johnson after winning the 2020 Travelers Championship

The Travelers Championship is a favorite on tour and garnered the "Players Choice" award (voted on exclusively by PGA Tour members) in 2018 for the second straight season.

The award is based on players' experiences with tournament services, hospitality, player and family amenities, community support, attendance, golf course and other attributes.

21. Waste Management Phoenix Open

Location: TPC Scottsdale Stadium Course, Scottsdale, Arizona

Established: 1932

Month played: February

Bottom Line: Waste Management Phoenix Open

The TPC Scottsdale course is the home of the loudest hole in golf, the famed par-3 16th. Upward of 20,000 mostly intoxicated fans harshly judge shots hit both well and poorly.

Usually played on Super Bowl Sunday, the tournament still draws some 85,000 patrons for the final round.

20. RBC Heritage

Location: Harbour Town Golf Links, Hilton Head Island, South Carolina

Established: 1969

Total purse (winner's share): $6.9 million ($1.242 million)

Bottom Line: RBC Heritage

Stewart Cink watches drive off 11th tee

Known by golfers and fans as "That Tournament After the Masters," this event is perhaps the most underrated on tour.

The tournament beautifully fills the post-Masters space with a laid-back weekend in lush Hilton Head, a near-perfect destination for people trying to flee winter’s dying breath.

19. Wells Fargo Championship

Wells Fargo Championship

Location: Quail Hollow Club, Charlotte, North Carolina

Established: 2003

Bottom Line: Wells Fargo Championship

Wells Fargo Championship trophy

The Wells Fargo Championship has a great pedigree, a great course (designed originally by George Cobb and renovated through the years by Arnold Palmer and Tom Fazio) and a great spot on the schedule.

The event also is known to have one of the tougher finishes as its 16th, 17th, and 18th holes, commonly known as the "Green Mile," often rank among the PGA Tour's toughest closing stretch.

18. RBC Canadian Open

Glen Abbey Golf Club

Location: Various courses around the country (including Glen Abbey Golf Course, Oakville, Ontario, Canada, and the Hamilton Golf & Country Club, Hamilton, Ontario)

Established: 1904

Total purse (winner's share): $7.6 million ($1.368 Million)

Bottom Line: RBC Canadian Open

The only PGA Tour event held north of the border, the RBC Canadian Open is the third-oldest continuously running tournament on the tour, after The Open Championship and the U.S. Open.

A Canadian has not won the Canadian Open since Pat Fletcher in 1954.

17. Genesis Open

Genesis Open

Location: Riviera Country Club, Pacific Palisades, California

Established: 1926

Total purse (winner's share): $7.4 million ($1.332 million)

Bottom Line: Genesis Open

Tiger Woods at the 2019 Genesis Open

One of the oldest tournaments on the tour is played on one of its most iconic courses, with the march up the 18th fairway at Riviera toward the clubhouse ranking as the best jaunt anywhere.

There are a handful of holes here, including the par-3 seventh, the short par-4 10th and the 18th that are some of the best ever designed.

16. AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am

Phil Mickelson

Location: Pebble Beach Golf Links/Spyglass Hill Golf Course/Monterrey Peninsula Country Club, Pebble Beach, California

Established: 1937

Total purse (winner's share): $7.6 million ($1.368 million)

Bottom Line: AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am

Crooner and actor Bing Crosby founded the Pebble Beach Pro-Am as the "Crosby Clambake."

Played at two other top-drawer facilities, as well as the course considered among the top two or three in the nation, this event is highly regarded by players and fans.

Pebble Beach also has been the site of six U. S. Opens, in 1972, 1982, 1992, 2000, 2010 and 2019.

15. Sentry Tournament of Champions

Location: Plantation Course at Kapalua, Maui, Hawaii

Established: 1953

Total purse (winner's share): $6.5 million ($1.3 million)

Bottom Line: Sentry Tournament of Champions

You have to win a tournament in the previous season to be invited to play in this event.

It's in friggin' Hawaii and played on a course on which the golfers hit 400-plus yard drives downwind and downhill.

This is a nice event and sweet to be a part of.

14. Charles Schwab Challenge

Location: Colonial Country Club, Fort Worth, Texas

Established: 1946

Bottom Line: Charles Schwab Challenge

Jordan Spieth at the 2021 Charles Schwab Challenge

This event, also known as the Fort Worth Invitational, is perennially one of the best on tour, thanks to its traditional layout and the prestige carried by a win here.

Held each year at the venerable Colonial Country Club, the tournament is one of only five given "invitational" status by the PGA Tour, and consequently has a reduced field of approximately 125 players.

13. Memorial Tournament

Daniel Summerhays

Location: Muirfield Village Golf Club, Dublin, Ohio

Established: 1976

Month played: May/June

Total purse (winner's share): $9.1 million ($1.638 million)

Tiger Woods has won the event a record five times.

12. The Northern Trust

Location: Rotates between New York City and Boston areas (Liberty National Golf Club, Jersey City, New Jersey; TPC Boston, Norton, Massachusetts)

Bottom Line: The Northern Trust

The first FedEx Cup playoff event was held in 2019 at the some-players-like-it, some-players-don’t course across the Hudson from Manhattan that backs up to the Statue of Liberty.

The field for the Northern Trust, formerly known as The Barclays, is limited to the top 125 players in the end-of-season FedEx Cup standings.

The tour returned to New England and TPC Boston in 2020 and rotates between the NYC and Boston area.

11. BMW Championship

The BMW Championship is the penultimate event of the FedEx Cup playoffs and is limited to the top 70 golfers in the standing after the prior week’s Northern Trust.

Born as the Western Open in 1899, this tournament was played at Medinah for the fourth time in 2019 but first since 1966.

It will be played at the Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mills, Maryland, in 2021 and the Wilmington Country Club in Wilmington, Delaware, in 2022.

9. World Golf Championships-HSBC Champions

Every WGC event is desirable and important for professional golfers because of the limited fields, the guaranteed payday and the prestige of being among the top players in the game.

And because the event is in China, and everyone wants the golf market in that country to grow, winning here carries a lot of clout.

8. World Golf Championships-Mexico Championship

Location: Club de Golf Chapultepec, Mexico City, Mexico

Total purse (winner's share): $10.25 million ($1.745 million)

Bottom Line: World Golf Championships-Mexico Championship

This event moved to Mexico a few years ago from Doral in Miami.

It ranks high for the quirky, and relatively short, course design, and playing at elevation makes the pros’ shots even more impressive.

The fact that it’s a limited, elite field and has a large, guaranteed purse also works to its advantage.

7. World Golf Championships-FedEx St. Jude Invitational

This tournament took over as a WGC event for the first time in the 2018-19 season (taking the place of the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational), and it added instant prestige after being just a run-of-the-mill event for years.

It’s ranked so highly because of its huge purse and prestigious field.

5. The Players Championship

This devious Pete and Alice Dye-designed course was fashioned to be difficult for the best golfers in the world and takes its pound of flesh from whoever tees it up here.

It is home of perhaps the most famous golf hole in the world, the devilishly short par-3 17th with its island green.

This event, which considers itself the "Fifth Major," carries the largest purse outside the major tournaments.

4. PGA Championship

Location: Bethpage State Park Golf Club’s Black Course, Bethpage, New York

Month played: May (formerly August)

Total purse (winner's share): $11 million ($1.98 million)

The fourth-ranked major for this list got a boost in the 2018-19 season when it was played at the incomparable Black Course, one of the world’s sternest challenges and likely one of the best courses in the U.S. that anyone can play.

The tournament’s move to May helped remove the afterthought status it’s suffered as compared to the other three majors.

3. U.S. Open

The course for America’s national championship varies every year. But one thing never changes — it's always a great one.

In 2019, the tournament returned to Pebble Beach, the course many consider to be the finest in the nation. The fabled course on the Monterey Peninsula celebrated its centennial that year.

It had hosted five previous U.S. Opens, four U.S. Amateurs and two U.S. Women’s Amateur Championships.

2. The Open Championship

The British Open is the biggest golf tournament in the world to all but the Americans because of its history and prestige and the demands it places on the best golfers.

The event returned to Northern Ireland in 2019 for the first time since 1951, when it became the first club outside of the mainland United Kingdom to host the tournament.

1. The Masters Tournament

Bottom Line: The Masters Tournament

The Masters is far and away the best tournament on tour each year just because it's always played at the same course — and that course is one of the best in the world — and because of all the perks that come with a win.

It’s an honor to even be invited to play at Augusta, and every round is cherished by the golfers and must-see television for fans.

PGA Championship announces largest purse in tournament history

Will Zalatoris enters Sunday at the PGA Championship with a chance for a MASSIVE payday.

The golf has not always been good at the PGA Championship at Southern Hills , but the money? Now that’s great .

After three blustery days of play in Tulsa , golfers are preparing for the grand conclusion of golf’s second major championship of the year … and for the record payday that will come along with it.

On Sunday at the 2022 PGA Championship, the PGA of America will hand out the largest purse in tournament history, a massive lump sum of $15 million that represents a $3 million jump over last year’s overall payday.

The ridiculous reason Bubba Watson *intentionally* drove into the rough at the PGA Championship

The significant bump will help to bring the tournament more in line with the rest of golf’s highest-paying events, which have begun reaching into the $20 million range in recent years. At $15 million, the PGA Championship purse mirrors the prize money given to players at the Masters, which also saw a jump in 2022, and brings the PGA above the payouts offered at most PGA Tour events.

As for the players with a chance of taking home the $2.7 million winner’s sum from Tulsa tomorrow? Mito Pereira , Will Zalatoris, Matt Fitzpatrick and Cameron Young are the frontline contenders, while names like Rory McIlroy, Justin Thomas and Bubba Watson lurk further back. (Either way, that’s a hell of a lot of $18 Michelob Ultras .)

Below, find everything you need to know about the PGA Championship’s $15 million purse; you can catch the action from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. ET on ESPN and from 1 p.m. ET until the completion of play on CBS.

PGA Tour, 'positioned to grow faster,' raises purses in five events

  • Associated Press

The PGA Tour is raising purses even higher in five of its biggest events, with two FedEx Cup playoff events now offering $15 million in a schedule that pushes prize money closer to the $500 million mark this year.

The increases, which include $12 million purses in the three invitational tournaments, were approved at a board meeting two weeks ago in Houston and outlined in a memo PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan sent to players Monday.

"We are positioned to grow faster in the next 10 years than we have at any point in our existence," Monahan said in the memo, which was obtained by The Associated Press.

Monahan said the tour's forecast is for 55% of revenue going back to the players in prize money, bonus programs and other benefits. The $838 million allocated to the players includes $32 million from the reserve fund.

Prize money from official events comes out to $360.1 million. That doesn't include the $75 million from the FedEx Cup, and it doesn't include the majors, which now are lagging behind regular PGA Tour events.

The majors typically don't announce their purses until closer to the event. A year ago, the richest major was the U.S. Open at $12.5 million. The PGA Championship purse was $12 million and the Masters and the Open Championship awarded $11.5 million.

The memo was a year-end message that was delivered earlier than usual, in part because of an announcement earlier this month that a Greg Norman -led group funded by Saudi Arabia's sovereign wealth fund plans to inject $200 million into the Asian Tour as a step toward creating a world tour promising guaranteed riches.

Monahan did not mention competing tours in his memo.

The tour already posted the 2021-22 schedule, which shows most tournaments increasing prize money by nearly $1 million.

The updates approved by the board include the postseason events -- the FedEx St. Jude Championship and the BMW Championship -- going from $11.5 million to $15 million in prize money, meaning the winner would get $2.7 million. That's a boost from a $9.5 million purse a year ago.

Also, prize money at the Genesis Invitational at Riviera, the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill and the Memorial at Muirfield Village are going up to $12 million, compared with $10.5 million previously listed and $9.3 million a year ago.

The World Golf Championships-Dell Match Play also will have a $12 million purse.

The average purse on the PGA Tour, not including the four opposite-field events, is roughly $9 million.

Along with prize money, the FedEx Cup bonus pool goes from $60 million to $75 million, with the winner getting $18 million. The Comcast Business Tour Top 10, which offers bonuses to the top finishers in the regular season, doubles its total bonus to $20 million.

The Player Impact Program, which awards the leading players based on various media metrics, goes from $40 million to $50 million.

The tour said $685 million from the $838 million allocated to the players would be player compensation, such as prize money and bonuses. The rest goes into retirement and benefits plans.

The increases come largely from the nine-year media rights deal (network and digital) worth roughly $7 billion that goes into effect in 2022.

"Over the past 20 months -- as we have managed through the pandemic and restored our operating reserves -- we have prioritized purse and comprehensive earnings growth across all FedEx Cup positions," Monahan said in the memo, adding that the tour was "bullish on the forecast" going forward.

2024 Arnold Palmer Invitational: Power Rankings, Defending Champion, Prize Money, and Major Details

T he PGA Tour has reached its second tournament on its Florida Swing at the Bay Hills Golf Course. The 2024 Arnold Palmer Invitational, presented by Mastercard, will kick off on March 7 and continue until Sunday, March 10. Meanwhile, the fourth of the signature events and the second of the three player-hosted tournaments after the Genesis Invitational will see the current top players of the Tour battling against each other for glory while the uprising golfers duke it out at Puerto Rico .

A total of 69 athletes will tee it off in Florida. Interestingly, being a signature event, the focus of the players will be on the elevated prize pool of $20 million, along with the title of champion. Although the tournament will witness the best of the Jay Monahan-led circuit, there will undoubtedly be a few fan favorites who will make the cut after 36 holes and go ahead to try to win the competition!

The strong contenders at the Arnold Palmer Invitational

The field for the Invitational , which includes players who qualified through Aon Next 10, Aon Swing 5, the top 50 in last year’s FedEx Cup standings, 2024 Tour winners, and exemptions, was finalized following the recently ended Cognizant Classic. Meanwhile, the tournament, which acts as a qualifying event for the Open Championship, will allow three golfers to make the field at the major championship. Thus, with the opportunity in sight, there are many who are favorites to emerge victorious.

1. Kurt Kitayama: He is the defending champion of the event and is currently ranked No. 37 on the OWGR. Although the 31-year-old placed at T39 in his last event at the Genesis Invitational, he managed a T8 finish at the WM Phoenix Open, which took place before that with a score of 13-under 271. What’s more, he also finished inside the top 25 at the Sony Open in Hawaii. Nevertheless, he will surely be hoping to rake in his fifth professional win in his career by defending his title at the upcoming tournament.

2. Scottie Scheffler :  The current No. 1 golfer in the world has been having a pretty good run in the 2024 calendar. Out of the five starts after his win in the 2023 Hero World Challenge that took place in December, the American Pro has finished a total of four times inside the top 10, with the remaining one in the 17th position in the American Express. He will undoubtedly be looking to continue his amazing run at the signature event, all the while aiming for the top spot to maintain his ranking on the OWGR.

3: Rory McIlroy :  The Northern Irishman had a scintillating start to 2024 with a runner-up finish at the Dubai Invitational, followed by a victory at the Hero Dubai Desert Classic. Although he hasn’t made his mark yet this season on the PGA Tour, the golfer will be presented with the opportunity to reclaim the No. 1 ranking on the OWGR at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, which he won back in 2018. How? Well, if he ends up winning the tourney while Scheffler finishes tied for T3 or worse, the 34-year-old can jump to the top of the world rankings.

4: Xander Schauffele :  Although the current No. 5 on the OWGR has not emerged victorious this year, his finishes at the Jay Monahan-led circuit have left many in awe. Out of the five starts, the golfer has finished 4 times inside the top 10, the best of which came at the American Express, where he placed T3, and the last of which was a T4 at the Genesis Invitational. He is surely a fan favorite to win the event.

5: Wyndham Clark:  One should never underestimate the world No. 7 based on his last performance at the previous signature event. Although he missed the cut at the same time, the golfer has proved his remarkable skills through a win at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, where he registered a 12-under 60 in the third round of the tournament. This, in turn, helped him propel himself to the top of the leaderboard, due to which he emerged triumphant after the competition was shortened to 54 holes. Many in the community will be looking forward to the golfer pulling off a similar feat in Florida as well.

A test for the PGA Tour Pros at Bay Hills Golf Course

Since 1979, the par-72, 7466-yard course that Dick Wilson designed has hosted the annual signature event and served as a testing ground for the top players on the men’s circuit. The beautiful course, along with the Charger Links, spans across 270 acres along the Butler Chain of Lakes, which offers a fair challenge to both professionals and amateurs.

Interestingly, the grounds will hope to provide a scintillating display of golf for the community as they await the top brass of the PGA Tour duking it out amongst themselves. More importantly, the golfers will be hoping to prove themselves the best among the best as well as clinch the title and rake in the winner’s cut of $4 million.

Points and Payouts: Austin Eckroat earns $1.62M, 500 FedExCup points at Cognizant Classic

Change Text Size

If you owned a ticket with Austin Eckroat on it to win the Cognizant Classic in The Palm Beaches, then it was worth the wait, regardless of the kickback. Even better, and even if nerves resulted in a restless overnight – for him and you – sweating until Monday for him to pay out at +10000 at BetMGM was worth it.

The PGA TOUR sophomore from Edmond, Oklahoma, methodically navigated to his breakthrough victory with a 4-under 67 in the unintentional two-day finale and posted 17-under 267 at PGA National Resort’s Champion course. It was good for a three-stroke margin over Min Woo Lee ( +3500 ) and Erik van Rooyen ( +6600 ).

Eckroat earns 500 FedExCup points, $1,620,000 and scores of exemptions, including into all of the remaining Signature Events.

The 25-year-old is yet another product of the pipeline of professionals from Oklahoma State University. Eckroat also is the latest longshot to prevail in nine tournaments this season. And he’s the fourth first-time winner of 2024, joining PGA TOUR rookies Nick Dunlap (The American Express), Matthieu Pavon (Farmers Insurance Open) and Jake Knapp (Mexico Open at Vidanta).

Speaking of Knapp, he showed very little slowdown in the wake of his coronation in Mexico as one of five to finish in fourth place at PGA National. He was available at +5000 to win.

Tournament favorite Rory McIlroy ( +750 ) returned to the tournament for the first time in six years and finished in a seven-way tie for 21st place.

Defending champion Chris Kirk ( +4000 ) closed with a 6-under 65 to finish T28.

2024 Arnold Palmer Invitational one and done picks, field, sleepers: PGA Tour predictions, golf betting advice

Mike mcclure locked in his expert pga one and done golf picks, rankings and top sleepers for the arnold palmer invitational 2024 at arnold palmer's bay hill club & lodge in orlando.

hovland.jpg

Arnold Palmer's Bay Hill Club & Lodge in Orlando will be the site of a PGA Tour signature event this week with the 2024 Arnold Palmer Invitational set to tee off on Thursday. Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy headline the 2024 Arnold Palmer Invitational field. Scheffler is the 6-1 betting favorite in the latest 2024 Arnold Palmer Invitational odds. Other top contenders include McIlroy (17-2), Viktor Hovland (12-1), Xander Schauffele (14-1), Patrick Cantlay (16-1), Ludvig Åberg (20-1), Jordan Spieth (20-1), and Collin Morikawa (20-1). Defending tournament champion Kurt Kitayama is listed as an 80-1 longshot. The total 2024 Arnold Palmer Invitational purse is $20 million, with the winner's share listed as $4 million.

Scheffler won this event in 2022 and has a proven track record against elite fields. Should he be among your top targets in One and Done pools this week? Or should you target someone like Matt Fitzpatrick, Adam Scott, or Sungjae Im? Before locking in your 2024 Arnold Palmer Invitational one and done picks, you need to see what SportsLine DFS pro and PGA expert Mike McClure has to say .

The One and Done format is growing in popularity. It has several noticeable similarities to NFL Survivor pools, with the main difference being entries are not eliminated with a bad week. Players pick one golfer per week and earn points based on their selected golfer's prize money for that tournament. Golfers can only be used once per season, and the point format makes nailing majors, signature events, and big money tournaments critical.

McClure is a DFS legend with over $2 million in career winnings, and he's been red-hot on his PGA picks dating back to the PGA Tour restart in June of 2020. McClure uses his proprietary simulation model to analyze the field and crush his  golf picks .

McClure nailed plenty of One and Done picks in 2023. At the 2023 Farmers Insurance Open, McClure's top One and Done pick, Max Homa, outlasted the entire field to take home his sixth career PGA Tour victory and $1.566 million. At the WM Phoenix Open, McClure nailed Scheffler winning the tournament, taking home $3.6 million.

He correctly called Jon Rahm's wins at The Masters and the Sentry Tournament of Champions. Then at the RBC Canadian Open McClure listed Nick Taylor and Tyrrell Hatton as two of his top one and done picks. Taylor would go on to win the tournament, while Hatton finished in third place. And finally, at the Rocket Mortgage Classic, his top OAD pick was eventual tournament champion Rickie Fowler.

This season, one of his top OAD picks was for The American Express was Justin Thomas, who finished in third place and took home $635,600, and at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am his top pick was Scottie Scheffler, who finished in sixth place after the final round was cancelled due to weather. At the WM Phoenix Open, McClure recommended OAD players use Scheffler as their pick if they hadn't done so already this season. He ended up finishing in third place, taking home $519,200. At the Genesis Invitational, McClure tabbed Patrick Cantlay, who finished in fourth place at the signature event, as his top OAD pick. Finally, at last week's Cognizant Classic, McClure's top one and done pick, Min Woo Lee, finished in a tie for second place.

Now, McClure has dialed in on the Arnold Palmer Invitational golf tournament and just locked in his one and done picks and PGA predictions. They are a must-see for any player looking for an edge in their One and Done pool. You can only see McClure's Arnold Palmer Invitational 2024 one and done picks at SportsLine .

Top 2024 Arnold Palmer Invitational One and Done picks

One of McClure's top one and done plays this week for the Arnold Palmer is Viktor Hovland. The 26-year-old is the reigning FedEx Cup champion, with six career PGA Tour wins on his resume. He has a well-rounded game that translates to success on practically any course layout. McClure believes he has a very good chance at winning again this week at the Arnold Palmer Invitational.

Hovland has consistently ranked near the top of the PGA Tour in several key metrics. The Norwegian has a relatively small sample size for 2024, but in 2023 Hovland ranked fifth on the PGA Tour in strokes gained tee-to-green (1.412) and total driving, eighth in total strokes gained (1.648) and strokes gained off-the-tee (0.741), and 11th in strokes gained on approach (0.610). McClure knows Hovland excels against top flight fields and expects him to be in contention this week at the Arnold Palmer Invitational.  You can see who else to back at SportsLine .

How to make Arnold Palmer Invitational 2024 One and Done picks

McClure is also targeting another golfer for his 2024 Arnold Palmer Invitational one and done picks who was outstanding throughout the 2023 season. This former major championship winner has the ability to win any tournament he enters, and is one of the most talented golfers in this wide open field. You can find out who it is, and check out all of McClure's Arnold Palmer Invitational one and done picks at SportsLine .

Who wins the the Arnold Palmer Invitational 2024, and which golfers should you target for your PGA one and done picks this week? Visit SportsLine now to get Mike McClure's Arnold Palmer Invitational 2024 one and done picks, all from the DFS pro who called Nick Taylor's epic win at the RBC Canadian Open and Rickie Fowler's win at the Rocket Mortgage Classic in 2023 , and find out.
