2024 Masthead

Motorhead’s Hammered Tour May 2002

We headed out for New Jersey around seven or seven thirty at night. I had been home from the crap factory I called college for a couple of hours. I had my shiny new ticket I purchased on-line from ticket-master all ready to go. It had been relatively smooth sailing for what was maybe an hour trip, until we saw the sign for the club, which would be our destination. We went straight, but should have made a turn. We made a turn but it was too late. We zigzagged all about the place. Only thing to do was turn around and start from scratch.

The Birch Hill Height Club, scenically located between Route 9 and a few auxiliary road inhabited by hillbillies, was site number twelve on Motörhead’s new tour. The noise didn’t start till around 10pm, so we did as the other well-rounded demented freaks did, drink in the parking lot. To make a disappointing story short we didn’t bring enough. Later, we found out that’s all the booze there was going to be; the club didn’t have a liquor license. The line to go in was a long and slow one, and soon I found out why. They were padding people down at the doorway, and judging by the amount of people hopping on and off line, it wasn’t an ill-founded estimation on their part of how many came carrying more then just a few years of emotional baggage coupled with a little dementia. Even my partner in this had to go and secure a few ‘items of interest’ in the car.

Once inside, I stood shoulder to shoulder with all of society’s finest: skinheads, punk rockers, red necks, eight-foot-tall bikers, the Mexicans, and even a Rastafarian – – the usual angry disturbed individuals. They stood around drinking, popping and smoking every conceivable chemical in abundance, and quite possibly a few that weren’t. Perhaps the most sarcastic highlight of the evening were the words which adorned security’s shirts: “Peacekeeper”- – -cynicism at its finest. The opener was Morbid Angel, a death metal group. They weren’t a bad act insofar as they sucked, but despite that they had a pretty descent following in the mosh. Morbid Angel plays their last song and heads out, and everything seems to shut down. People go outside for a quick hit on the bong or slug of booze. Others (myself included) crowd in the mosh area and slowly, out of the crammed up pit of disturbed creeps, the demand for Motörhead is echoed across the club. Security is understandably displeased with this.

Motörhead arrives and all hell breaks loose. I forget the first song, namely because at that time there were more important thing for me to pay attention to, such as various human carcasses flying around in all directions into everything, one of which, happened to be mine. I recovered to the relative safety of the outer perimeter of the violent and over heated human mass by the third or fourth song, which just happened to be every punker’s favorite song from ‘Limey Old’ England, a cover of “God Save the Queen.” A song or two later they played one off their new album Hammered. The song was dubbed “Brave New World,” I can’t comment on the lyrics however, since, by that time my hearing had safely faded into the relative obscurity of nonexistence, then again what do you expect from a band with an album named ‘Everything Louder Than Everyone Else’? As far as I was concerned it was as good as any of their classics which they played, such as “Iron Fist” or the aptly named “Born to Raise Hell,” which everyone did. Amongst the other songs they played was a tribute to the late Joey Ramon another oldie R.A.M.O.N.E.S., Sacrifice, and of course everybody’s favorite Ace of Spades.

The show ended unimpressively early at 1am eastern standard. Not being tired, able to hear well, and with no live show, somewhat bored, we drove around a bit. We ended at a 24-hour drive through fast food joint. After eating in their parking lot we headed home. My hearing had slowly, but steadily returned and I found myself slugging through the through the last few month before I received my Bachelor’s Degree. Here I sit, ever present, waiting for the next road trip.

There's always a certain amount of excitement when you get a chance to put a brand new Motorhead album in your CD player and I'll tell you......about half-way through the first song, with a big smile on my face, I could feel the raw energy and excitement just like it used to be for me years ago listening to albums such as Overkill, Ace Of Spades and Iron Fist . This album has moments that relive past glories and also contains a few soon to be Motorhead classics. The current line-up up of Lemmy (vocals/bass), Phil Campbell (guitar) and Mikkey Dee (drums) has been together for quite a few years now and I think captures the essence of the Motorhead sound as well as or if not better than any line-up in the past. This album is a great mix of all sorts of styles all done in primo Motorhead fashion. I lost touch a bit with the band through the 80's but I think every album since 1916 has been a strong one (some better than others but all still good!!!). Very few bands have such a characteristic sound with Lemmy providing the typical scowl of his demented poetry and the grinding, gritty guitar riffs. Phil Cambell really serves up some tasty guitar riffs and licks on this album. The first track, Walk A Crooked Mile , is a solid mid-temp rocker and features Lemmy doing some background vocal harmonizing (a little strange for a Motorhead album but hell, he can do whatever he wants and it still fits!!!). He poises many questions in this song such as "If you were Armageddon, who would you spare?"......"If you were a soldier...what would you bleed?"....and an absolute classic line "We hold rehearsals for your death......we're tired of your smile". This song is an instant classic. The track has great riffs and finishes with a cool Wah-Wah lead by Phil. Brave New World , another great track, is a good fast-paced rocker in which Lemmy tackles the corruption that exists in modern day society and paints a pretty bleak outlook for the future. The song really cooks and contains another classic line.."God is on your side....but I don't think that you're on his". As I was first listening to this disc, I kept pausing my CD player to write down these lines!!!! Voices From The War uses a more chunkier rhythm guitar sound than usual for the band and is a hard-hitting look at the horrors of war (a topic Lemmy has written about many times before). A couple of tracks, in particular, Mine All Mine and Dr. Love have a straight ahead rockin' bluesy feel to them and remind me a bit of a song like Going To Brazil (I saw Motorhead on David Letterman about 9 or 10 years ago and they played Going To Brazil with the full CBS Orchestra with piano and horn section and is was smokin!!... a great song is a great song no matter how it's played!!). No Remorse is a slower pounding heavy type of song and features some lower-pitched menacing vocals by Lemmy and really creates a creepy atmosphere. It also features a change to a fast tempo and finishes with some cool Wah-Wah leads through to the fade-out at the end......a great song!!! No Motorhead album would be complete without a blistering rocker along the likes of Iron Fist , or Ace Of Spades and Red Raw is just such a song. A smokin' fast cooker of a song that rivals the speed of early Motorhead material. The final track on the album is actually a very...very creepy narration by Lemmy called Serial Killer . It features a look through the eyes of a serial killer using a poetic style in a menacing, truly Lemmy fashion. The eerie backing sounds add to the overall atmosphere of this piece.

Motorhead is about to embark on their 25th anniversary tour and although they have a backlog of classic material and could draw huge crowds just by playing older material, they march on, releasing album after album of solid material. This album is no exception and I think is one of the better ones they have done in quite some time. They never sound dated and have a rough and tumble sound that never seems to tire. Motorhead is metal royalty and they helped pave the way for the Heavy Metal explosion that happened in the late 70's and continued into the late 80's. It says a lot for people like Lemmy who have refused to sell out and continue to do what he wants to do with this band for so many years now.

This album is not perfect... Motorhead is not perfect (I'm sure Lemmy will agree) but it's about as good as it gets with this band........LONG LIVE MOTORHEAD!!!!!!!!

Uh? Motörhead are still around? (I hear that a lot.) Yes they are. "Hammered" is their... hmmmm... trying to count... er... Never mind, latest release by the band. ;) Upon hearing this album, one may be tempted to say that the band has mellowed out, but having seen them live just a few days ago, still playing the old classics with energy, it's definitely not the case. Still this album rocks a little less than their previous albums, but still contain some very good fast rocking tracks in the typical Motörhead fashion such as "Brave New World", "Mine All Mine" and "Red Raw", just to name a few. But no matter what, all tracks here definitely sound like Motörhead , and the songs that I didn't like at first quickly grew on to me. The song "No Remorse" is a bit surprising at first because Lemmy uses deeper vocals that usual. Only the last track, "Serial Killer" at less than two minutes in length sounds a bit out of place, pretty much just narration with some background sounds here and there. I'm not sure what was the point of having it on the album but what the heck. :)

While this album is not up to par with the band's classic material, it is still a good addition to their discography and well worth getting. I was going to give this album a slightly lower rating but considering that from beginning to end I was either headbanging, tapping my foot or throwing my office neighbour through a wall, I realized the album doesn't lack in attitude. :) One thing you can always be assured of with Motörhead is that you know the band sticks to its guns and if you've liked their previous stuff, you'll find something you like on newer offerings as well. Let's hope the guys will still be around for a while. Recommended.

The British rock band was co-founded by frontman Lemmy Kilmeister known for classic songs like ‘Ace of Spades.’

Motorhead photo by Fin Costello and Redferns

The quintessential English rock band and trailblazers in the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal, the mighty Motörhead are an institution, a national treasure, even, certainly in the case of founding member Ian Fraser Kilmister, known to us all as Lemmy. His sad death, on 28 December 2015, four months after the release of their final studio album, Bad Magic , signalled the immediate announcement that the band would split, though the brand lives on. Listen carefully: you can still hear the sound resonating from his trusty old amp, nicknamed “Murder One”.

Their ear-shattering array of studio, live and compilation albums are revered by fanatics for attention to sonic detail, speed punk riffs and lyrics that function like some kind of Viking Armageddon allied to a noise that might be compared to a neutron bomb. Add all that to their distinctive logo, a fanged boar’s tusk decorated biker emblem (familiar to insiders as ‘War-Pig’ or  ‘Snaggletooth’) and you have a band that matches content to imagery. Their classic albums include Overkill, Bomber , the must-have Ace Of Spades and the genre-defining No Sleep ‘Til Hammersmith (a reference to their many appearances at the old Odeon and their habit of staying up rather later than is generally considered sensible) are all within our remit here, as are the majority of Motörhead’s ball-busting epics. But while they have a certain beastly quality Lemmy and co. have never been without wit and purpose. Roots in old-school rock and roll are at their bedrock but they can do subtle too and if they’re deadly serious and seriously deadly they are also smarter than the average metal act, hence the fact they’ve sold more than 15 million albums worldwide and show no signs of slowing down. They are not a guilty pleasure, they are a force to be reckoned with: warts and all exemplum of metallic majesty.

Lemmy formed Motörhead in the aftermath of his departure from Hawkwind, the progressive acid speed drone rockers whose “Silver Machine” characterised the era of patchouli oil-soaked headbanging. Citing a desire to be fast, raucous and arrogant, with a side order of paranoia and speed freak rocking overkill, Lemmy enlisted Larry Wallis (ex-Pink Fairies) to add electric guitar lines to his bass while the original drum seat was taken by Lucas Fox. Having practiced their act in a disused furniture store in Chelsea, close by Lemmy’s latterday home on a moored Thames barge, the trio format was established and they supported Greenslade and the Blue Oyster Cult on early dates in 1975 before Andrew Lauder signed them to United Artists. It wasn’t plain sailing. Phil “Philthy Animal” replaced Fox and a would-be debut was recorded at Rockfield in Wales with Dave Edmunds. That remained unreleased until 1979 when it appeared as On Parole , and mighty fine it was too. Even so, the classic Motörhead line-up didn’t hit plastic until Stiff released the “Leaving Here” single while the band actually considered packing it in. Satan forbid. The salvation of a sort arrived via Chiswick Records – a feisty independent who gave them studio time and the debut single and album, both called Motörhead hit the racks in summer of ’77 while all around them was punk. Motörhead’s hardcore attitude meant they avoided being cast into the dinosaur pit however and the album is well worth another look today since it features stalwarts from their live set like  “Lost Johnny” and the thrashy “White Line Fever”.

Getting An Appetite: The Day Guns N’ Roses Came To Geffen

‘used future’: the shackles were off for the sword’s sixth album, up to 11: the songs that inspired heavy metal.

Going out under the banner “Achtung! This Band Takes No Prisoners” the rejuvenated ‘head changed production, subbing Speedy Keen for Jimmy Miller to create Overkill with its stand out cuts “No Class” and “Metropolis” studding a rough and ready collection that easily passes muster four decades later. Check out the Deluxe Reissue with 2-CDs. The groundswell of good reviews continue with Bomber (1979), an entirely in-house project that contains the legendary tracks “Lawman” and  “All The Aces”, autobiographical in content, and the Len Deighton-inspired title track. Again the reissue is a double-CD affair that is perfect for rediscovery.

By now the Lemmy effect is in full flow and the band prove adept at bossing then destroying theatres with a look and sound that is every bit as vital as anything in the hip punk world. While the terrain starts to shift they emerge with the classic Ace Of Spades , produced by Vic Maile in less than three weeks, summer 1980. The title track, a signature tune of massive import, will hit the charts while the parent album soars to number 4 in the UK and there are TV appearances on Top of the Pops, and bizarrely, the kids show Tiswas. Nostalgia aside this is one of those albums you have to hear, its impact on the development of thrash metal is beyond dispute. The Deluxe Edition contains many alternative takes and it’s a real gem.

After combining with the female metal act Girlschool to make the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre doubleheader 45 the boys document their exploits on No Sleep ‘Til Hammersmith (1981), their first live album. This will hit number one in the UK and set Motörhead on the path to true greatness. But just as their star rises highest internal friction leads to Clarke’s departure after Iron Fist . Enter Brian Robertson, ex- Thin Lizzy axeman, for the five-star comeback, Another Perfect Day (1983).

Combining Sci-Fi excess and cartoon nightmare artwork this disc is one of our all-time ‘head faves with particular reference to “Shine”, “Die You Bastard!” and “I Got Mine” where the trio are at their smoothest.

Those playing catch up should check out the compilation No Remorse , basically four sides of utter mayhem with a large dose of grandstanding Motörhead genius and the bonus appeal of four new recordings based on sessions under a new guise of Lemmy, Phil Campbell, Wurzel and Pete Gill (ex-Saxon). Time to take stock here and wouldn’t you know, this lot is suddenly accepted as the thinking person’s headbangers: grizzled without pretention, albeit biker mean throughout.

Now is the time to rediscover Orgasmatron (produced by Bill Laswell of Material, no less) and the sleek Rock ‘N’Roll (muscle in on “Eat the Rich” and “Traitor”) and then gird yer loins for the next live disc, No Sleep At All (on the boards in Finland). It’s ten years on now and Motörhead are giants of rock. So what else to do but make an album, 1916 , that is portentous in reference to the Great War, a Lemmy fixation, but is equally loved for “R.A.M.O.N.E.S.”, their tribute to the New York punk contemporaries who also shifted the parameters of fast noise back in the day. Both acts have of course become tee-shirt icons.

We pick ourselves back off the floor for Sacrifice , made in America, and one of those things that slipped through the net on release but shouldn’t have done since it is one of Lemmy’s top picks, and ours. Groove harder though on Overnight Sensation where there is a change of tack as they ditch the quartet and return to classic trio formation without breaking step.

The really great reviews that We Are Motörhead received are more than justified by their version of the Sex Pistols ‘ “God Save The Queen” and the rabid crowd pleasers “Wake the Dead” and “Stay Out of Jail”. Also, look out for Hammered and the comprehensive 4-CD box set Stone Deaf Forever , a fantastic career overview with fascinating liners, fantastic artwork from the ever-loyal genius at work known as Joe Petagno (his gloriously lurid paintings help define the outfit) and really, just hours of not too harmless fun.

Search and destroy for the BBC Live & In-Session (2005) and 2013’s Aftershock , where all those years of rock’n’roll experience flourish anew. The final album from the studio is the aptly named Bad Magic , produced by Cameron Webb. It has that live-in-the-room vibe the band thrive on, and storming songs such as “Victory Or Die”, “Teach Them How to Bleed” and a hair-raising version of the Stones ’ “Sympathy For The Devil”. The live outing Clean Your Clock was captured at Zenith in Munich in late November 2015 and serves as the greatest hits with all the tried and trusted showstoppers on view.

With Phil Taylor’s passing a month before Lemmy’s, it was decided to call it a day, though more live material and outtakes are in the can. The archive hasn’t run dry.

It’s been a tempestuous career, with ups and many downs, but so many recorded highlights that we blush to point out most of them are here for your perusal. And on any given dark night when the sound of the crowd rises to a roar and the name of Lemmy is chanted on the wind, you will realise it’s got to be time to discover Motörhead all over again. Rude not to. In fact, very rude, indeed.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
  • Moscow subway system is the  5th in the intensity  of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).
