Thanks man this really helps keep it up !

Less than 1k? Eh puro tent naman. :P

Maximized budget un para makatipid, basa basa, bago comment.

Un ang thrill ng pagiging adventurer. Ang MAG-TENT.

where in laiya can we pitch tents for a minimal fee? kasi, halos puro resorts ung nasesearch ko and dko sure if they allow camping.

Great info!

Wow. The best ka talaga kuya mervz. Everything i need. Salamats for this! :)

I'm interested in visiting a nearby calm and serene beach destination this weekend 7th feb. Which one will you suggest? Near and Dear....may be a restarant serving beer on the beach will be great too...

water travel manila

Go for Laiya in San Juan Batangas or Anilao where resorts are easily accessible.

Forgot to mention. I'm new to Philippines. Can I do a solo trip...

Updated po ba ito? I plan going to Gulugod baboy after grad kasi. Thanks!

TRUUUUUUEEEEEE!!!!

Hi, I just want to ask which is closer to Manila, San Juan, batangas or Mabini, Batangas? Thank you!

i find you blog misleading, especially the way to Ternate (boracay de cavite) you should include that hiring a vehicle from the town proper of Ternate up to the resort, costs P3000.

Meron po ba kayong person na pwede kontakin sa borawan? Thanks!

How to get to boracay de cavite at teenage from here sa bulacan?

may house for rent ba sa one of the place you post? Im looking for a house for rent near the beach.. yung monthly basis ang payment

pwede ba mag-camp sa Crystal Beach?

pwede mag-camp sa crystal beach?

san po b may magandang beach pang family? thanks..

San pong beach resort.

How much Po yung toll fee from manila going to san narciso zambales yung total Po., private vehicle Ang gamit

7 Beautiful Must-Visit Beaches Near Manila

There are plenty of reasons to visit the Philippines – incredible food, a warm, hospitable culture, and of course, the beaches! Known for their white sand and crystal-clear waters, beaches in the Philippines draw thousands of travellers each year looking to soak up the sun. While many will head to Puerto Princesa or Boracay for their seaside fix, there are also some fantastic beaches near Manila!

What’s So Special About Manila?

The vibrant, thriving capital of the Philippines, Manila is a beautiful combination of the old and new. European-style architecture stands next to traditional temples and shop fronts, adding to the eclectic vibe of this unique location. The weather here is temperate year-round and makes for the perfect urban adventure for keen explorers.

The city itself is filled with delightful baroque churches, hidden markets, and exciting secrets around every corner. While there aren’t many beaches in Manila, Philippines, there are plenty of lovely shores and coves just outside of the reaches of the outer suburbs. Visitors can take part in water sports like snorkelling and skiing, or just relax on the sandy beaches of these magical spots during their stay.

If you’re keen to get out of the city for the day, let’s talk about 7 of the best beaches and beach resorts near Manila!

7 Must-See Beaches Near Manila To Visit

nearest-beach-from-manila

Calatagan, Batangas

Catalagan is just over 81 miles outside of Manila and is a favourite day trip location for locals and travellers. While you may have heard of the camping and hiking in this area, Catalagan’s beaches are not to be missed!

This beach near Manila is famous for its crystal waters and white sand, and visitors travel from near and far to experience the views over the ocean. However, one of the most popular tourist draws is the incredible marine life that calls Calatagan home – look for dugongs, dolphins, and even the occasional whale surfacing off the coast. Snorkel, dive, and swim amongst some of the most pristine marine environments in the world – if you’ve got a waterproof camera, make sure to take some photos!

If you want to spend a little more time at this Manila beach, there are plenty of resorts lining the shores. Sip cocktails in luxury, then head down to the sandy shore and relax in the Philippines’ sun. There are plenty of fine-dining restaurants here, too, so make sure to sample some of the delicious local fare during your stay.

Nagsasa Cove, Zambales

Nagsasa Cove is one of the best beaches in Manila and definitely worth the day trip! Like many shores in this area, Created by a volcanic explosion in 1991, Nagsasa Cove’s beach is a fine mix of volcanic ash and sand, making it perfect for walking across on a hot day.

This beach is not only famous for its sand, but also its native plants. Agoho trees surround the cove, and massive hills created by the dormant volcano mean that panoramic views are available – so long as you’re keen on a hike! For those who want something a little more unique, the stunning Nagsasa Falls are around a one-hour walk from the main cove, and provide a great chance to take some enviable holiday snaps.

If you want to get out on the water, Nagsasa Cove can be accessed by boat, with charters leaving from Manila daily. While this beach can be done as a day trip, we recommend taking advantage of the camping and traditional accommodation options available. Many beach resorts near Manila are hyper luxurious, but Nagasa Cove offers the chance to sleep under the stars or rest overnight in nipa and bamboo huts.

beach-near-manila

Laiya Beach, Batangas

If you’re heading to Batangas, you can’t miss out on Laiya Beach! Considered one of the best beaches in Manila, Philippines, Laiya is popular not only for weekend tourists but for families and corporate groups looking for adventure!

One of the nearest beaches from Manila on this list, Laiya Beach is famous for its crushed shell and coral shores, as well as turquoise waters straight off a postcard. The area is also home to some of the best beach resorts near Manila, with luxury accommodation and water sports like kayaking and scuba diving just part of the itinerary for many visitors.

Don’t let the high-end reputation scare you from visiting – there is also plenty of budget accommodation and free activities available for those who wish to travel more frugally.

Cagbalete Island, Quezon

While many Manila beaches are known for their stunning white sand and clear water, Cagbalete Island is truly something special! Located in Quezon, about 56 miles from Manila, this tiny island is home to some of the richest biodiversity in the Philippines. As a result, it is a haven for hikers, divers, and travelers just looking to get away.

On Cagbalete Island, you aren’t limited to relaxing on the sand – instead, get involved with some of the unique activities available around the beach! From horseback riding along the shores to cruising along the Mangrove River and swimming in Hagdan-Hagdan Falls, there is something for every budget and preference on this magical isle.

In years past you may have struggled to find accommodation on Cagbalete – however, due to the popularity, many luxury and budget resorts are now located along the shores. If you don’t feel like staying overnight, there are regular charters from the Port of Manila – it will take around 3 hours to get there, so we recommend finding a bed for the night!

Subic, Zambales

Sometimes, you just need to escape the hustle and bustle of city life – if that sounds like you, Subic could be your next getaway location! While not as famous as other Manila, Philippines beaches, this quiet little town is certainly worth your attention.

For the keen scuba divers, Subic is known for being one of the best locations for wreck diving in the Philippines. Due to the extensive coral reefs, many clipper ships from as far back as the 1700s have wrecked themselves near the shore and provide ample opportunity for underwater explorers to dive the remnants. However, if you don’t feel like heading beneath the surface, the shallow reefs and abundant marine life make for a perfect afternoon of snorkelling and discovery.

Many visitors will be looking for a beach resort near Manila in order to justify the trip out to Subic - you can take your pick from five-star luxury through to basic comfort accommodation options in this quaint beachside location.

Anilao, Batangas

At just over 60 miles outside the city, Anilao is the nearest beach from Manila, and is one of the most popular locations for day-trippers looking for some island-style luxury.

Like Subic, Anilao is famous for its dive sites, and is home to world-class wrecks in Devils Point, Twin Rocks, and Secret Bay. Bring your own gear, or hire some from the many scuba schools and dive shops located on the shores of this beautiful Manila beach. For beginners, you can also take lessons from experienced instructors, or multi-day courses designed to get you comfortable with the beautiful marine wonderland.

When you say “Manila,” it can mean two things. First, it can refer to the City of Manila, the capital of the Philippines. Manila is made up of 16 administrative districts, including Binondo, Ermita, Intramuros, Malate, and Quiapo, among others.

Second, the greater Metropolitan Manila area is also referred to as Manila. It is officially known as the National Capital Region (NCR) or Metro Manila. It is made up of the City of Manila, Makati , Quezon City , Parañaque, Pasay, and Taguig, to name a few.

But if you want to experience Manila's outdoor attractions fully, take note of the months with the sunniest days.

Holiday Season  | September to December

The best months to go to Manila are during the -ber months of September, October, November, and December, when the city is full of festive lights and Christmas decorations.

It is also cooler during these months, which is great if you’re planning to do a lot of walking around. However, traffic can get worse than usual during the Christmas season. It is also during this time when a lot of people flock to the malls for their holiday shopping.

Dry Season | January to April

If you have a lot of outdoor destinations included in your Manila itinerary, it's best to explore during the dry months of January to April.

While there is rainfall throughout the year in Manila, January to April has the least chance of rain. Make sure to bring water bottles, caps, and an umbrella with you if you're planning to do a lot of walking in Manila.

During the dry season, the temperature in Manila is warm. Take note that the hottest months in Manila, are typically from April to May, with an average daily high temperature above 33°C.

If you plan to visit during these months, always bring a bottle of water to keep yourself hydrated while exploring Manila. Additionally, make sure to check for  weather updates and the forecast on the days of your trip.

Here's an overview of the average monthly Manila temperature and rainfall

What to Wear

When visiting Manila, expect a tropical climate. So dress in casual breathable clothes, especially during the dry months. If you're in the malls or outdoors at night, especially during the holiday season or rainy season, it's best to bring a light jacket with you to keep you warm.

How to Get to Manila

Plane landing in Manila airport

Manila is accessible from both international and local destinations by flight. You will be landing in one of the four terminals of  Manila Airport , depending on the airline.

  • Dubai to Manila flights
  • Singapore to Manila flights
  • LAX to Manila flights
  • Cebu to Manila flights
  • Davao to Manila flights
  • Tacloban to Manila flights
  • Iloilo to Manila flights
  • Bacolod to Manila flights
  • Legazpi to Manila flights
  • Boracay to Manila flights
  • Bohol to Manila flights
  • Read our guide on airports in the Philippines

Note that there are four terminals in Manila, which are not connected by subway systems. It can be confusing for many first-time visitors, so make sure to find out which airport you're landing in before making transfer arrangements.

See our popular Manila Transfers

Ninoy aquino international airport (naia) to hotel in pasay | private manila airport transfer (mnl), private manila airport transfer to manila city hotel from ninoy aquino international airport (naia), ninoy aquino international airport (naia) to hotel in taguig | private manila airport transfer (mnl), getting around manila .

Top view of the intersection at historical EDSA in Manila

The Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 1 is located in Parañaque City, while Terminals 2, 3, and 4 are in the neighboring Pasay City.

The metro or subway system does not connect these airport terminals at the moment. The only way to get there and out is via private transport, shuttle buses, or taxis.

There is a free shuttle bus going to all terminals that runs every 15 minutes, depending on traffic. Given the heavy traffic in Manila during the day and early evening, it may not be the best idea if you are pressed for time (e.g., if you have a connecting flight with a layover of less than 4 hours).

You can also take the Airport Loop buses from all terminals. It will take you from the airport to Baclaran, Pasay Rotonda, Taft Avenue station of the Manila Metro Rail Transit System (MRT), and Manila Light Rail Transit System (LRT) in Pasay. Taft Avenue is the closest light rail station to the airport. Both MRT and LRT1 have a Taft Station and are connected with each other by a walkway.

Another option is the P2P (Point-to-Point) buses called the UBE Express. Fares vary depending on your destination. These buses run on four fixed routes, stopping at selected hotels and shopping malls, while other buses stop at big bus terminals. Check the  P2P bus schedules here .

By Taxi/Cabs

All Manila airports have taxi stands. You can ride the following:

Regular Taxi - White metered taxi/cabs with a fixed flag down rate and per kilometer fee.

Coupon Taxi- Blue-marked white taxi/cabs that are dispatched by airport personnel and charge a fixed price

Yellow Airport Taxi - Metered taxi with a fixed flag down rate and per kilometer fee, but almost double than the regular taxis.

Taxi scams at the airport are common. If the driver shows you a printed list of destinations and their corresponding prices, be warned that those rates are most probably overpriced.

Another red flag is when the driver doesn't use a meter and charges you ridiculous prices. To avoid the headache of getting scammed, use the official taxis (coupon taxis and yellow airport taxis).

When someone outside the arrival area offers you a ride, say no. Often, these drivers (or their middlemen) will overcharge you. They might offer to help you with your bags, keep a tight grip on your belongings and say no, or ignore them.

By Car Booking App

Another recommended way to get out of the airport and into the city is through Grab, a ride-hailing app similar to Uber (Uber is no longer operating in the Philippines).

Grab offers GrabTaxi (accredited regular metered taxi), GrabCar (private), and GrabShare (carpooling).  Download the Grab App before arriving in the Philippines in case the airport WiFi fails.

By Car Rental

There are car rental services in Manila that you can avail of, including Manila van rentals ,  SUV rental in the Philippines , and  luxury car rentals in the Philippines . Self-drive car rentals in the Philippines  like budget car rental in the Philippines  are also available in all Manila airports (except Terminal 4). Just make sure you have the requirements to rent a car in the Philippines . You can book a  car rental in Manila in advance so you can pick up the car at the airport or their designated pick-up points in Manila.

If you're driving in Manila, we highly recommend using GPS navigation apps like  Google Maps and  Waze . Traffic in Manila needs a lot of patience and excellent driving skills, so make sure to prepare yourself if you're driving here for the first time.

Public Transportation

Inside the LRT in Manila, Philippines

The fastest way of getting around is via train. Three lines are operating in Manila: Manila Metro Rail Transit (MRT), Light Rail Transit 1 (LRT1), and Light Rail Transit 2(LRT2). The other modes of transportation are the tricycle and jeepney, both unique to the Philippines.

You can also hail a taxi or use car booking apps or a motorcycle booking app if you want to explore Manila.

MRT and LRT

The Manila Metro Rail Transit (MRT) and Light Rail Transit (LRT) run across major roads in Manila and connect Manila's north and south areas. The MRT traverses Epifanio de Los Santos Avenue (EDSA), while LRT1 and LRT2 have routes crossing Pasay, Manila, Caloocan, and Quezon City.

If your hotel is somewhere in the city of Manila, Makati, Pasay, or even Quezon city, you can ride the MRT or LRT. Be warned though, that the MRT and LRT are very crowded during rush hour (7 AM to 9 AM and 5 PM to 9 PM on weekdays).

However, if you travel during the off-peak hours, the MRT and LRT offer the quickest way to slice through Manila's notorious traffic jams.

You can purchase single-journey tickets/cards (one way) or stored value cards (reloadable BEEP cards) in any station in MRT, LRT1, and LRT2. Reloading can be done at any station, as well.

The single-journey tickets are exclusively used in each line where you purchased them, while the reloadable BEEP cards can be used in all three lines. If you'll be riding the MRT and LRT a lot while in Manila, purchasing a BEEP card is highly recommended.

Metro Rail Transit and Light Rail Transit System Map

Source: Light Rail Transit Authority

MRT runs along EDSA, from Taft Avenue to North Avenue in Quezon City. This line gives travelers access to Roxas Boulevard, Makati, Mandaluyong, San Juan, and Quezon City. You can take this line if you want to explore  Makati tourist spots and Quezon City attractions.

LRT1 and LRT2

There are two LRT routes, LRT1 and LRT2. LRT1 is the first among the three light rails in the Philippines, while LRT2 is the newest. A walkway in Doroteo Jose station connects LRT1 and LRT2.

LRT1 runs from Baclaran to Monumento. It lets you explore areas in Roxas Boulevard or Pasay area, Makati, Manila, and Caloocan. Beyond Caloocan are mainly residential areas not frequented by travelers.

LRT1 cuts through most of the city of Manila, which makes it the best transit to ride to get to popular Manila attractions such as Binondo, Intramuros, and Rizal Park.

LRT 2 has the shortest route. It runs through Metro Manila's East to West areas. It starts in Manila and ends in Marikina City, with stops along Quezon City and San Juan City. LRT 2 may be the shortest line, but it can still take you to Manila tourist spots. You can ride the LRT 2 to get to Binondo and San Sebastian Church in Intramuros, which is the only all-metal building in the country.

Jeeneys in front of the Manila City Hall

Jeepneys have become an iconic symbol of Philippine culture and art. These can accommodate up to 20 passengers, depending on the size of the jeepney. Riding these open-aired vehicles in the streets of Manila offers an interesting experience for first-time visitors.

You can hail these anywhere on most Manila roads, but take note if there are designated loading and unloading stations in the area. Each jeepney has a sign on its windshield that indicates its last stop and 1 or 2 other significant stops along its route. Find out first which route you need to take before riding a jeepney.

Payments are handed to the driver at the front during the ride. If you're seated at the far end of the jeepney, the other passengers can pass it to the driver for you.

Locals say "Bayad po, " (Here's my payment) when handing the money to the driver. It is so the driver can compute how much your fare is since it varies on your pick-up point and destination.

When you're about 5 to 10 meters away from your stop, locals will say "Para po!" (Please stop) to notify the driver to slow down and stop at the nearest unloading station.

Motorized tricycles, or simply tricycles, are the local form of the auto-rickshaw similar to Thailand’s tuk-tuk. These public utility vehicles ply a set route in inner roads. They are usually found in terminals where passengers line up to wait for their turn to board one.

These can also be hired like taxis in some areas if their route allows it. Built in a variety of styles that differ from city to city, these are usually made locally by building a sidecar affixed to a motorcycle. These can usually accommodate 2 to 4 passengers only.

Taxi or Car Booking App

For those who only have a short time in the city and want a hassle-free journey, the best option is to take a taxi or book Grab using the  Grab App .

While Grab is usually more expensive than riding jeepneys or buses, these can ensure you can get around safely and in comfort. You don't have to do multiple transfers, which is convenient for travelers coming from and going to the airport.

Motorcycle Booking App

More adventurous travelers can choose to book with the  Angkas app , which is similar to Grab Motorbike in other countries like Vietnam.

If you are traveling solo, you can use the app to hire a rider to pick you up and take you to your desired location. It is especially significant if you are in a hurry since motorcycles can navigate through heavy traffic easily.

For a destination as comprehensive as Manila, it can get overwhelming with all the information you need to digest. Before you start planning your Manila trip, take note of these essential practical travel and safety tips for a hassle-free and safe vacation:

Major establishments in Manila accept credit cards. There are also several money changers and ATM throughout Manila. However, it's better to bring enough Philippine Peso (PHP) with you, in smaller bills in 20, 50, and 100 denominations for faster transactions.

Additionally, always carry loose change. They will come in handy when you are riding public transportation or buying food and small items from vendors.

Most Manila locals use Filipino when communicating. The majority of locals can speak and understand English. Make sure to greet the locals with a simple "Hello" to initiate a conversation. Don’t worry, they’re friendly and can accommodate most of your questions.

Watch out for pickpockets when commuting and keep your valuables safe, especially in crowded areas like Cubao, Binondo, and Makati Avenue. If you’re planning to walk alone at night, make sure to keep your bags close to you. Always be aware of your surroundings.

Wear light clothing when going to nature parks, and bring lots of water. It's best to bring a jacket or umbrella with you in case of rain. Don’t forget to bring a small bag when you’re going on a sightseeing trip! It will be more comfortable when you're walking along minor roads, especially if you plan to shop.

The weather in Manila can get quite hot and humid, so be sure to bring drinking water while going around. Although vendors are selling bottled water everywhere, it is best to bring your water bottle to stay hydrated and minimize plastic waste.

Like in most big cities, it’s best not to wear fancy jewelry and carry all your valuables with you when doing  sightseeing trips in Manila . Secure all your essential items and money in anti-theft bags.

Make sure to do some research as well on standard costs of fares and other items. Most Filipinos can speak English. Don’t be afraid to ask for help from locals if you need information on the amount paid for jeepney fares or directions if you get lost.

Critters & macro life in anilao

Virtually every variety of juvenile fish and critter imaginable can be found in Anilao. You'll definitely want to bring your best underwater camera . Shrimp, crabs, nudibranchs, small squid and cuttlefish are arguably more plentiful than any other dive destination. Frogfish , pipefish and seahorses are also fairly common and we've even seen Rhinopias and Hairy Frogfish. Wonderpus, mimic and blue-ringed octopus can also be seen.

Bobbit worms and many other critters await patient muck divers. Anilao has a large number of species of hard and soft corals - perhaps more than anywhere else in the world. Local guides take pride in locating even the smallest macro subjects living on the corals, oftentimes leaving photographers with a tough decision on which subject to shoot.

bigger marine life & wide-angle opportunities in anilao

Larger marine life is also found in Anilao, including large schools of jacks, the occasional turtle and giant seahorses. At Mainit point, which has strong currents, we've seen up to 4 great barracuda hunting, along with giant and bluefin trevally. Reef sharks are occasionally seen down deep at dive sites with stronger currents and on very rare occasions people have seen small whale sharks.

Anilao has some unique soft coral forests, generally found at 70 - 130ft deep, which are mostly unexplored and can turn up rare critters such as seahorses and rhinopias.

Anilao is also one of the best places to dive in Southeast Asia. Check out the full list here .

what it's like to dive in anilao

Diving is usually by a small open boat (bangka), which is comfortable for up to 4 divers plus a crew of 2-3. Dive sites are usually 10-25 minutes away from most resorts. The general schedule is 2 dives early in the morning, enjoying lunch and rest in the afternoon at the resort, and then 2 more dives in the late afternoon, with the last dive being a complete night dive.

Frequent night dives are a must in Anilao and no visit would be complete without a muck dive at the pier! Dive time limits are less stringent than at other locations, and significant time can be spent in the shallows. Occasionally divers will encounter currents but the guides at the resorts we recommend dive according to everyone's skill and comfort levels. The guides are excellent critter-finders, which keeps photographers shooting for the entire dive.

For more information, you may want to check out our report from our trip to Anilao in 2019 & 2022 .

Diving Conditions

  • Water Temperature: Water temp is generally 27.5C/81F but in January and February this can drop to around 25C/77F. We recommend diving in a 3mm full wetsuit with booties. Many divers choose to wear light gloves and occasionally a hood after several days of repetitive diving. Be sure to bring a light rain jacket, and ample sun protection.
  • Visibility: Typically 40-50ft
  • Weather: The average annual temperature is 27.2 °C

Travel Information

How to get to anilao.

Anilao is about a 3-hour drive from the Manila International Airport (MNL), also known as Ninoy Aquino International Airport. Several major Asian airports run flights to MNL and serve as layovers for visitors from the US and Europe. Once clearing customs with checked bags, divers walk outside and take a tunnel down to the left where resort shuttle drivers are waiting with signs. The drive out of the city is exciting and you can catch glimpses of the colorful Manila city life through the window.

How to Dive Anilao

Anilao is a two to three-hour van ride from the airport in Manila. Resorts, liveaboards and dive centers are available. Many divers combine Anilao with a trip to dive Puerto Galera , or Cebu / Dumaguete. Puerto Galera is just an easy hour speedboat ride away, while Cebu or Dumaguete is an hour's flight from Manila.

Most of the Anilao dive sites are close to the dive resorts, 10 to 20-minute boat rides in a small "outrigger" style boat is the norm.

Underwater equipment to bring

  • Anilao is a mecca for underwater macro photography.  Dive guides are well-trained in showing photographers and videographers the best subjects in a careful manner. In addition to an underwater housing , we recommend bringing an underwater strobe to bring back the colors of the marine life.

best time to dive

October to early June is the main diving season in Anilao. The best months are November / December and April/May, with April and May being the most crowded months at the resorts.

Monsoon occurs in July through August, but the dive sites remain accessible.

The critters and rich marine life are found year-round. If you don't mind slightly cooler temps, then Jan - March is great too, and often has more critters underwater.

Other things to do

Anilao is relatively limited in terms of non-dive activities. Snorkeling, kayaking and various excursions can be arranged at the resort of your choice. If you're traveling with non-diving friends, partners, or family members, destinations like Puerto Galera or Dumaguete might be more suitable.

We love Anilao! We were spoiled with only 4 divers per boat. The dive staff found every creature we wanted to see. The hundreds of colorful nudibranch were fantastic. The photo workshop was also good with tips and photo reviews each night. We made friends that will last a lifetime.

I attended a recent Anilao workshop where a typhoon decided to make an appearance. In addition to the usual challenges associated with variability of equipment, experience, and personalities, the Bluewater dive leaders were dealt another in the form of the weather situation. Given the remoteness of the resort and limited “other activity” options, they filled the time and handled it well with on-premises activities. Good thing they have such a cache of knowledge, experience, and materials of their own to pull from. Couple all that with 18+ hrs per day talking and I’d say their collective work was A+ in making a positive experience for all.

I rated conditions as "average" but that has much more to do with results of the weather situation. I was pleased enough with the sites, crew, and critters that I will definitely visit Anilao in the future.

I look forward to traveling with both of the Bluewater dive leaders in the future!

cuttlefish...flamboyant style

I'm an intermediate underwater photographer, so this review is written through that lens (pun intended).

I had always read that Lembeh was more difficult to get to than Anilao, but an overall better destination for macro because it had a bit more diversity and that diversity was more dense. Having been to both once each now, I don't find that true. While maybe seasoned experts with 200+ dives in each destination might know the differences, I didn't. I saw almost all of my critter list I'd put together at both destinations, and Anilao was much easier to get to!

We stayed at Crystal Blue Resort, which had average accommodations and food (can't really say anything negative about either), but an excellent camera facility and absolutely phenomenal dive guides. In the camera room, each person had their own cubby/workspace that was more than enough space to setup everything and organize your equipment without getting in anyone else's way. Our dive guide had us literally photographing subjects 90% of every dive. As soon as I would finish with one subject, our dive guide was already getting my attention to come to one of the other 3 critters he had been scouting.

We had 2 of our dives with strong current. While certainly not the strongest current I've been in, it made shooting super macro impossible, and shooting regular macro with a 105mm lens difficult. I'm not sure whether the current was due to the time of year or something that happens semi regularly. Aside from those 2 dives, the other dives were almost like diving in a pool. There were tide changes throughout the week that required us to dock on the other side of the peninsula since it wasn't safe to dock at the resort. It took longer to get back to the resort and we were shuttled in stuffy vans, but that seemed like a necessary evil.

We had an EXCELLENT experience in Anilao, booking through Bluewater. Crystal Blue was a great resort for our foursome and we really enjoyed having our own boat and amazing dive guide. Macro and super-macro photo opportunities were around every corner and we were treated like family at the resort. We will definitely be coming back - can't wait!

It's hard to find anything to complain about with respect to diving in Anilao. It is very easy to get to from the West Coast of the US, and once in Manila the resort makes the last leg of the journey to Anilao very easy.

If you are into macro, this is a must-see destination. Anilao is home to some of the worlds most dense populations and wide variety of nudibranchs, in addition to dozens of other critters that are a photographers dream. In general, the dive guides are among the best I have ever been with, and they will easily keep you on subjects for the entire trip. Ask for something to see and they will deliver. Obviously it depends on which dive operators you use, and some will be better than others, but in general the guides in Anilao know the locations, the critters and the habitats.

Anilao is somewhat remote, so the topside activities are limited, but for me going to Anilao was about the diving and photography.

Overall, this desitination should be on any list for macro photographers. Wide angle options are there, but could be considered limited.

Cannot wait to get back to beautiful Anilao.

Couple shot in Hulugan Falls

At 70 meters high, Hulugan Falls is the tallest waterfall in Laguna. This grand spectacle is undoubtedly one of the best waterfalls near Manila — it’s only 2 hours away and it involves less than an hour of trekking to reach.

Please enable JavaScript

It’s best visited during the rainy season when the stream transforms into a powerful gush of water which pools into a huge green-ish basin where you can swim. The stream forms a constant mist around it, creating an almost dreamy-like effect.

You can go here for a swim or even a picnic. It’s also possible to camp overnight with tents.

You can also visit the nearby Talay Falls and Hidden Falls before proceeding here to complete the waterfall trilogy in Luisiana (Talay Falls, Hidden Falls, Hulugan Falls).

How to get here :

Ride a bus bound for Sta. Cruz, Laguna. Then ride a jeep bound for Lucban or Lucena and get off at Barangay San Salvador. Ride a tricycle to the registration area.

There are 2 trails that lead to Hulugan Falls. An easy, longer trail and a short, steep trail. Choose one based on your comfort and experience in trekking.

Aliw Falls is another one of the recently discovered waterfalls in Laguna. It features a picturesque 25-meter multi-cascade stream of water that collects to a small but deep green pool below.

Swimming here is not advisable because of the pool’s depth. However, you can still have a picnic among the stone chairs and appreciate the green foliage surrounding the waterfall.

Aliw Falls can also be found in Luisiana, Laguna.

From Sta. Cruz, Laguna, ride a jeep bound for Lucban or Lucena and get off at Dafi Resort in Barangay San Jose. Fill up the registration list. Then trek for about 25-30 minutes to reach Aliw Falls. The trek is relatively easy, since there is natural access to the waterfall.

Kat in Cavinti Falls or Pagsanjan Falls

If you’re the adventurous type, then you will love Cavinti Falls.

Cavinti Falls is formerly known as Pagsanjan Falls and locally as Magdapio Falls. It’s the last level of a third-tier waterfall along Cavinti River. Its stream falls down from a height of 90 meters against a cave and forms a deep green-ish natural pool. The cave can be reached using a bamboo raft.

Make your way to Sta. Cruz, Laguna. From thereon, you can either choose to go on a boat ride via Pagsanjan (called “ Shooting the Rapids “) or hike and rappel your way via Cavinti. The first is the easier of the two options.

Kilangin Falls in Liliw, Laguna

Kilangin Falls seems to come straight out of a fairy tale — an enchanting blue pool surrounded by a 40-foot moss-covered wall. The pool has natural spring cold water, which goes up to 15-18 feet deep.

There are no tables or cottages on the site. Eating near the stream is also not allowed. Come here to take a cold dip and go.

Ride a bus to San Pablo or Sta. Cruz, Laguna. Then ride a jeep to Liliw and get off at the municipal hall. Next, ride a tricycle to the registration site. Fill up the registration list. Then trek for 45 minutes to reach Kilangin Falls.

Kilangin Falls can also be reached via Barangay Bukal in Majayjay, where it is called Bukal Falls.

There are certain things that make Bunga Falls a great place to visit: it’s easy to get to, it’s affordable, and it’s ideal for thrill seekers.

Bunga Falls is also called the Twin Falls of Nagcarlan, Laguna. It’s about 15 meters high, featuring a single cascade of water divided by a huge rock. It’s possible to cliff jump from the rocks above.

There are cottages near Bunga Falls where you can rest or leave your things. There are no food stalls. Rest rooms and shower rooms are available, as well as rentals for salbabida or floaters.

How to get here:

Ride a bus to San Pablo, Laguna. Alternately, you can also ride a bus bound for Lucena and get off at San Pablo. Then ride a jeep to Nagcarlan. From there, ride a tricycle to Bunga Falls.

Daranak Falls in Tanay, Rizal

Daranak Falls is one of the most popular attractions in Tanay, Rizal . Daranak Falls is a 14-meter waterfall with a wide pool where you can take a refreshing swim. The pool’s color ranges from aqua blue to a light green.

There are proper tables and a huge function hall in Daranak Falls, so it’s a perfect spot for a picnic. There is also a small sari-sari store where you can buy various items and food.

From Daranak Falls, you can also proceed to Batlag Falls which is about 15-20 minutes away. Batlag Falls is located in a private property so you will need to pay a separate entrance fee.

From Starmall or Edsa Central, ride a jeep bound for Tanay and get off at Tanay Public Market. From there, ride a tricycle to Daranak Falls.

Buruwisan Falls is one of the nine waterfalls tucked in Mount Romelo in Siniloan, Laguna. It is also the most accessible and — a lot of people would argue — the most beautiful. Its stream cascades from a height of about 50 meters into a large pool.

From Starmall or Edsa Central, ride a jeep bound for Tanay and get off at the Tanay Public terminal. Then ride a jeep to Siniloan. Next, ride a tricycle to the crossing leading to Buruwisan Falls Ecology Park. Walk for 10 minutes to reach the registration site.

Start your trek to Mount Romelo. From the mountain’s camp site, trek for 10-15 minutes to reach Buruwisan Falls.

Hinulugang Taktak Falls in Antipolo

An hour away from the city, Hinulugang Taktak is one of the most convenient waterfalls near Manila you can visit.

It stands about 21 meters high. It’s considered a protected landscape by the DENR and the Rizal Provincial Government.

Currently, it is closed off from swimming; however, you can still appreciate and take pictures of the waterfall. If you want to take a swim, there’s a man-made swimming pool inside the park. Proper swimming attire is required.

Ride a jeep or van to Antipolo and get off at Victory Mall. Beside the mall, there is a tricycle terminal to Hinulugang Taktak.

Kaytitinga Falls is a relatively unknown waterfall located in San Jose del Monte City, Bulacan. Currently, it is only known among the mountaineering community although its potential as an ecological destination has already been recognized.

Kaytitinga Falls is a three-tiered waterfall surrounded by flora and fauna. A tribe of Dumagat lives in the area where the Kaytitinga Falls can be found.

As it is untouched, there are no food stalls or other commercial developments near it. You can bring your own food, but make sure to take your trash with you.

Ride a bus or jeep to Tungko, Bulacan. Then ride a jeep to Licao-Licao. From there, ride a tricycle to the jump-off point to Kaytitinga Falls.

Pantihan Falls (also known as Balayungan Falls) is a small waterfall known mostly by locals in Maragondon, Cavite. This is a great option if you’re looking for somewhere less crowded.

Pantihan Falls is located inside a resort. As such, getting here requires no trekking.

There are cottages and tables along the riverside where you can relax and eat.

Pantihan Falls is a side trip option after visiting Malibic-libic Falls or hiking in Mount Marami.

Ride a bus to Naic, Cavite. From there, ride a jeepney bound for Magallanes and tell the driver to drop you off at the crossing going to the waterfall. From there, ride a motorcycle to Pantihan Falls.

From Manila, ride a bus or van to Real, Quezon.

  • Architecture : The fort is characterized by its high stone walls, watchtowers, and a moat. The entrance to the fort features a grand gate known as the “Puerta de Santa Lucia,” which leads to a courtyard. Within the complex, there are various buildings, dungeons, and open spaces.
  • Dr. José Rizal : Perhaps the most notable historical figure associated with Fort Santiago is Dr. José Rizal, a Filipino nationalist and writer. He was imprisoned in the fort’s dungeons before his execution in 1896. Rizal’s writings and advocacy played a significant role in sparking the Philippine Revolution against Spanish rule.
  • Rizal Shrine : Today, Fort Santiago houses the Rizal Shrine, a museum dedicated to the life and works of Dr. José Rizal. The shrine includes artifacts, memorabilia, and exhibits that provide insights into Rizal’s contributions to Philippine history and his vision for national identity.
  • Tourist Destination : Fort Santiago is a popular tourist destination in Manila, attracting both local and international visitors. Its historical significance, well-preserved architecture, and serene ambiance make it a place of reflection and learning about the Philippines’ colonial past.
  • Restoration and Preservation : Over the years, efforts have been made to restore and preserve Fort Santiago’s structures. Restoration projects have helped maintain the fort’s historical integrity and ensure that future generations can continue to learn from its history.
  • Intramuros : Fort Santiago is located within Intramuros, a historic walled area that was the heart of Manila during the Spanish colonial period. Intramuros is also home to other significant landmarks, churches, plazas, and government buildings that collectively tell the story of the Philippines’ colonial history.

Overall, Fort Santiago stands as a testament to the Philippines’ complex colonial history and its struggles for independence.

It is a place where visitors can immerse themselves in the rich cultural and historical tapestry of the country.

Experience the Masungi Georeserve on a Trip

Hanging Bridge in Masungi Georeserve in Tanay, Rizal, Philippines.

Once upon a time, those with a sense of adventure may find a hidden gem in the beautiful country of Baras, Rizal.

This story begins not so long ago, when the Masungi Georeserve’s stunning beauty made it an instant hit on the web and a trending topic on social media.

Just think: in less than two hours, you can be in awe and wonder, and you won’t even have to leave the busy center of Makati.

The georeserve is a haven for geology, a place of refuge for some of Mother Nature’s most prized creations. You’ve just stepped onto a hiking trail like no other, and the air is electric with anticipation.

Envision yourself scaling rope obstacles that test your speed, balance, and resolve.

Envision yourself walking across rough terrain on suspended bridges, the gentle sway of the bridges bringing you closer to nature’s mysteries.

The crowning glory, however, consists of one-of-a-kind observation decks suspended precariously above prehistoric karsts of limestone. As far as the eye can view, a tropical rainforest blankets the landscape in vibrant green.

As the sun peeks out from behind the trees to illuminate your route in a kaleidoscope of colors, you know that this is more than just a walk in the woods. The wind, the leaves, and the sound of your footsteps on the rocky ground all come together to tell a story.

If you only have one day to get away from the hectic pace of Manila, I highly recommend this section.

Masungi Georeserve is a living story about the intertwining of nature’s beauties and human creativity, and it will stay with you long after your experience has come to an end.

Practical Tips: Navigating the City

Manila is a sprawling metropolis, and getting around can be both an adventure and a challenge.

From public transport to safety tips, here’s a compilation of practical advice that has served us well during our numerous trips to Manila.

We’ve often hopped on a jeepney to explore different parts of the city, and it’s a budget-friendly way to see Manila from a local’s perspective.

However, jeepneys can be crowded and may not offer the most comfortable ride. For a more convenient option, consider using the LRT or MRT systems, which are generally faster and less crowded.

Safety First: Tips for a Secure Trip

Manila is generally a safe city, but like any large urban area, it has its share of risks. We always recommend keeping an eye on your belongings, especially in crowded places like markets or public transport. Also, it’s wise to avoid walking alone at night in areas that are not well-lit or populated.

Connectivity: Staying in Touch

Staying connected in Manila is relatively easy, thanks to the widespread availability of Wi-Fi and mobile data plans.

We usually pick up a local SIM card upon arrival, which offers affordable data and call rates.

Many cafes and shopping malls also offer free Wi-Fi, making it easy to stay in touch and share our Manila experiences in real-time.

Connectivity in Manila goes beyond just internet access; the city also has a range of services like Grab and Angkas that make getting around more convenient.

These apps are not just transport services; they also offer food delivery and other amenities, making them a handy tool for any traveler.

Navigating Manila requires a bit of preparation and awareness, but once you get the hang of it, you’ll find it’s a city that’s easy to explore.

Sofia Martin

Can you drink tap water in the Philippines?

It’s a question that probably nags at your brain as you plan your family sojourn to this Pacific gem.

Good on you, as it’s a crucial point to consider.

As well-traveled parents, we’ve sifted through the information so you can focus on creating priceless memories, sans any hydration hiccups.

Generally, tap water here doesn’t pass the potability test.

Although Manila’s water supply might be within safety norms, we’d advise sticking to filtered or bottled water.

With the correct insights, securing clean and safe water for your Filipino adventure will be a breeze.

Ready for a deep dive?

Key Takeaways

  • Tap water in the Philippines may not be consistently safe to drink.
  • Manila has treated water that meets safety standards, but caution is advised.
  • Opt for filtered or bottled water for a worry-free visit to the Philippines.

Can You Drink Tap Water in the Philippines: An Overview

Philippines

In the Philippines, tap water safety may be a concern for families planning to visit.

And it’s essential to know whether tap water is safe to drink or not.

Risks of Drinking Tap Water

In general, tap water is not recommended for consumption in most parts of the Philippines due to potential contamination by bacteria, viruses, and pathogens.

The city of Manila stands out as the only place where water is centrally treated and deemed safe to drink.

For your safety, it is advisable to use water filters in your accommodation or purchase bottled water during your stay.

Bear in mind that different regions in the country may have various water sources, such as rivers, lakes, and underground aquifers.

These sources are susceptible to contamination, which poses a risk when consuming tap water.

To help protect your family from potential illness, adopt some simple practices during your trip.

Always wash your hands with soap and water before handling food or eating.

In restaurants, avoid ordering drinks with ice, as it may be made from tap water.

Similarly, it’s best to stick to bottled or canned beverages whenever possible.

Drinking Tap Water in Manila and Metro Manila

In Manila, tap water goes through a rigorous treatment process, making it generally safe to drink.

The Food and Drug Administration of the Philippines is in charge of regulating water in the country, ensuring that it meets strict guidelines for quality and safety.

Most homes in the Metro Manila area receive their water from two major suppliers: Manila Water and Maynilad.

Both suppliers are held to high standards and are responsible for treating and purifying the water before it reaches your tap.

Manila Water, for example, regularly conducts sampling and testing at 930 sampling points across their distribution lines and water treatment facilities.

This helps guarantee that the water you’re drinking meets strict quality requirements.

Despite these safety measures, locals sometimes prefer not to drink tap water directly.

This is mainly due to the taste and a general mistrust of water cleanliness.

When I visited Manila, I noticed many people using water filters, or they would boil or buy purified water for drinking purposes.

To be on the safe side, especially with kids, you might consider following the locals’ lead: invest in a good quality water filter, or simply boil tap water before consumption.

This can offer an added layer of protection against potential contaminants and provide peace of mind as you and your family enjoy your visit to this vibrant urban hub.

Water Sources and Infrastructure

When planning your family trip to the Philippines, it’s essential to be aware of the water situation in the country.

The main water sources in the Philippines are rivers, lakes, and dams, each with its own unique attributes and challenges.

The Cagayan River is the longest and largest river in the Philippines, discharging approximately 53,943 million cubic meters of water annually.

While rivers may offer picturesque views when traveling around the country, they are not always the best source of drinking water.

Since rivers can be affected by pollution and other water contaminants, it is crucial to bear in mind that you should avoid drinking directly from them.

Lakes represent another significant contributor to the water supply in the Philippines.

The country is home to several notable lakes, such as Laguna de Bay, Taal Lake, and Lake Lanao.

Although they are beautiful to visit and admire, just like rivers, lakes can also be exposed to pollution and are not considered safe for drinking purposes.

Dams play a vital role in the water infrastructure of the Philippines, providing both drinking water and hydroelectric power.

Some noteworthy dams include the Angat Dam, Ipo Dam, Ambuklao Dam, and Magat Dam.

While the water they store can be cleaner than rivers and lakes, it still needs to be treated before becoming safe for consumption.

In terms of infrastructure, the Philippines has made significant progress in recent years, implementing water safety plans and building new water sources to improve access to clean water.

Nevertheless, tap water quality can still be variable and is not considered uniformly safe to drink across the country.

To give you an idea of the water situation in the Philippines, here’s a comparison of some key water-related data:

Water Treatment and Filtration Process

Before heading out to explore the best beaches in the Philippines , let’s talk about water treatment and filtration processes to ensure potable water for you and your family.

In the Philippines, water undergoes various treatment stages, including sedimentation, filtration, and disinfection.

The goal is to meet the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Philippine National Standards for Drinking Water (PNSDW) guidelines .

Disinfection Methods

Chlorination.

One common disinfection method used in the Philippines is chlorination.

Chlorine effectively kills bacteria and other microorganisms, which makes your tap water free of harmful pathogens.

However, it is essential to maintain the right balance of chlorine to ensure both water safety and taste.

If you’re unsure about the water quality at your destination, it is best to opt for purified or bottled water as an extra precaution.

Better safe than sorry, right?

To ensure maximum safety for you and your loved ones, consider using a filtration system or a water purifier during your trip.

This way, you can have peace of mind that the water you consume is free of any contaminants.

Bottled Water vs. Tap Water in the Philippines

In most parts of the Philippines, tap water is not considered safe to drink.

The capital city of Manila is the only place where water is centrally treated and at levels deemed safe to drink.

It’s best to avoid the risk and stick to bottled water, especially when traveling with kids.

Now, you may wonder why bottled water is better for your family.

It’s available in convenience stores, restaurants, food chains, vending machines, and other commercial establishments.

The bottled water is either purified or distilled, ensuring it’s safe to consume.

Taking this extra precaution will help protect you and your family from any potential health issues.

That said, for a more eco-friendly approach, consider using reusable water bottles and fill them with safe drinking water from your accommodation or filtered sources.

It’s a small step to reduce plastic waste while maintaining your family’s safety during the trip.

While traveling in the Philippines, you might encounter situations where boiling tap water is the only option.

In such cases, boiling the water will kill bacteria and organisms that may be in the water.

It’s still better to rely on bottled water for consumption whenever possible.

Precautions for Visitors and Locals

When it comes to water safety in the Philippines, both visitors and locals need to take some precautions.

Drinking tap water is generally not recommended, as it can lead to skin irritation and strange odors, especially in areas with poor water infrastructure.

Whether you’re a family planning your trip to the Philippines or a local resident, we’ll discuss some simple yet effective ways to ensure safe water consumption.

Boiling and Filtering Tap Water

One of the most reliable methods to ensure clean drinking water is boiling.

Boiling water for at least one minute will kill most germs and bacteria that can make you sick, such as those that cause typhoid fever.

This is especially important in developing countries where poor water and sanitation infrastructure is more common.

If boiling water isn’t always practical, consider investing in a good water filter.

There are various types of filters available, from simple carbon-based options to advanced ones with multiple filtration stages.

A high-quality water filter can effectively remove impurities, reduce unpleasant odors, and improve the taste of tap water.

When selecting a water filter, it’s essential to choose one that is certified and suitable for the water conditions in the Philippines.

Some filters are better for removing specific contaminants, so do your research to make sure you get the right one for your needs.

Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions for proper use and maintenance to ensure the filter remains effective.

Access to Clean Water and Sanitation in the Philippines

When traveling to the Philippines with your family, it’s essential to know about the current situation regarding clean water and sanitation in the country.

In urban areas of the Philippines, access to clean water is relatively more available compared to rural regions.

Even in the capital city of Manila, tap water isn’t generally considered safe to drink.

It’s highly recommended for locals and travelers alike to use water filters at home and opt for bottled water when outside.

Whether you’re exploring the beaches or enjoying a meal at one of the best restaurants in the Philippines , it’s ideal to stick with these options.

Despite the country’s progress in developing infrastructure, a significant portion of the local population still lacks access to reliable, safely managed clean water sources.

About 57 million people, which is roughly 52% of the population, face challenges in accessing clean water.

This issue primarily affects rural communities, which often have limited access to city centers and infrastructures.

Additionally, 43 million people, or 39% of the population, don’t have access to safely managed household sanitation facilities.

These facilities are crucial in maintaining proper hygiene and ensuring that water sources remain uncontaminated.

When visiting rural areas and interacting with local communities, be aware of the ongoing clean water and sanitation issues they face.

Parting Words

Philippines

While the question “can you drink tap water in the Philippines?” might seem simple, the answer requires a bit more nuance.

Though Manila’s water supply meets safety standards, caution should still be exercised.

The safest bet for travelers, particularly families with kids, is to opt for filtered or bottled water.

It’s about more than just quenching your thirst—it’s about ensuring you have a worry-free and memorable adventure in the Pearl of the Orient Seas.

In this way, your family’s journey can be filled with joy and good health, creating treasured memories that last a lifetime.

Let’s stress that Manila is a huge city. It encompasses the area of several cities. In all this huge space, of course, there are some pretty awesome things to see in Manila . But with such a huge population, there are some social issues too, such as poverty.

Travellers there can face some tricky and sometimes dangerous situations. For example, things like petty crime and carjackings aren’t uncommon.

Whilst the city does have a bit of reputation as one of the most dangerous in Southeast Asia, the likelihood of something actually physically bad happening to you is quite low. In fact, even with the terrorist attacks in recent years.

Not only that, but there are also traffic-clogged streets and high levels of pollution.

In Manila, what you need to do – for the most part – is simply use your common sense and travel smart . There are areas with higher crime than others, and certain neighbourhoods you probably shouldn’t wander around at night. So let’s get down to it!

There is no such thing as a perfect safety guide, and this article is no different. The question of “Is Manila Safe?” will ALWAYS have a different answer depending on the parties involved. But this article is written for savvy travellers from the perspective of savvy travellers.

It’s a wild world out there. But it’s pretty damn special too. 🙂

manila safe to visit

We’re not going to lie: there is a high level of violent crime in Manila. However, tourists aren’t usually targeted.

In case you were wondering, criminal gangs, do play their part in the country, and that’s still the case in Manila.

This hasn’t deterred tourists from visiting the Philippines as a whole and if visitor numbers are anything to go by, it seems that Manila is safe to visit, at least for tourists. A lot of people visit and have no trouble at all.

The Philippines as a whole is undergoing a time of change. Especially with the heavy-handed President Rodrigo Duterte in power.

The Philippine Bureau of Immigration has “specifically warned foreign nationals against participating in public protests and political rallies” – so follow their advice.

Also, there has been an increase in kidnappings. Not in Manila, but because of that (and other reasons) there is currently “ a state of emergency on account of lawless violence.”

Away from people, there’s nature. Between June and November, the Philippines is hit by approximately 20 typhoons per year. If you’re staying in a nice concrete building, you should be totally fine. But it could definitely affect your travel plans around the city, roads could flood, and shops will probably be shut. Stock up on food and monitor what’s going on with the news.

At the end of the day, don’t let all that put you off. It’s safe to visit Manila right now – just be careful and be aware of the potential dangers.

When choosing where you’ll be staying in Manila, a bit of research and caution is essential. You don’t want to end up in a sketchy area and ruin your trip. To help you out, we’ve listed the safest areas to visit in Manila below.

Makati is a large district located in central Manila. It is our number one choice for the best neighbourhood to stay in Manila if you’re visiting for the first time because it is clean and safe, and it is packed with excellent things to see and do if you have a few days in Manila.

The city’s high-end business district, Makati is an affluent area that is packed with delicious restaurants, high-quality shops, vivacious nightlife and historical landmarks. It is an area of the city that will cater to travellers of all styles because it has so many varied activities and attractions.

Quezon City

Located north-east of the city centre, Quezon City is one of the coolest places to stay in Manila thanks to its hip and trendy edge and youthful creativity. It offers a myriad of fashion boutiques, cat cafes, restaurants, clubs and beyond!

This up and coming area is the best neighbourhood in Manila to stay in for foodies as well. It is home to Maginhawa Street, one of the most famous food streets in the Philippines, which is lined with an excellent selection of shops and stalls that serve delicious and cheap eats from around the world. From pizza and pasta to seafood, noodles and more, Quezon City is one of Manila’s best neighbourhoods to tease your taste buds and satisfy your appetite.

Intramuros is a small neighbourhood situated in central Manila. It is one of the oldest parts of the city and is surrounded by the 16th-century walls built by the Spaniards during their occupation of Manila. Steeped in history, Intramuros is the best area in Manila to stay in for history buffs and culture vultures.

This historic neighborhood also wins our vote for where to stay in Manila for families, since it’s one of the safer areas in Manila. Not only is Intramuros packed with historical landmarks and tourist attractions, but it has lush parks, winding streets and plenty of restaurants and shops to experience and explore.

Places to avoid in Manila

Unfortunately, not all places in Manila are safe. You need to be careful and aware of your surroundings pretty much anywhere you go in the world, and the same goes for visiting Manila. To help you have a safe trip, we’ve listed the areas you need to be more careful of below:

  • Tondo – Tondo is a densely populated slum in Manila. Chances are, you won’t end up here anyway since there’s not much to see, but it’s still smart to be aware of this area.
  • Smokey Mountain – Smokey Mountain is basically no-go – unless you’re working with a charity. This genuinely poverty-stricken area (a former landfill site) is full of desperate people.
  • ANY dark corner or street – especially after dark, we’d recommend staying inside or only walking around in a big group. Anything that looks sketchy, avoid completely. Trust your gut here.

It’s important to know that Manila isn’t the safest place, so a bit of caution and research before you start your travels will go a long way. If you want to increase your safety during your stay, read on for our insider travel tips. Stick to those and you won’t have a single issue in Manila.

safety tips for traveling in manila

Manila is a big place, and wandering around like a lost tourist could get you into a spot of trouble. We’ve got together some of our top safety tips for travelling to Manila so that you can truly get the best out of your trip to this frenetic and colourful capital city…

  • Be on your guard at night – especially wandering around by yourself. Avoid shady characters and unlit roads.
  • Be careful of traffic  – not only will it take you a long time to get around, but it can be dangerous – keep your wits about you!
  • Keep your belongings close to you  – on the MRT and even if you’re out drinking, pickpockets will likely target you. Wear a money belt to hide your cash.
  • No matter who you are, keep an eye on your food and drink – spiking, and subsequent robbing, isn’t unheard of.
  • Beware of friendly strangers  – most likely people who approach you in a city won’t have friendly intentions. Be polite though.
  • Taxis can be a headache  – there are issues, but we’ve got a whole section on that coming up!
  • NO DRUGS  – don’t bother. Philippines prisons aren’t nice, penalties are very severe.
  • Carry a copy of your passport with you  – you have to show this if asked and a copy is totally fine.
  • Don’t look flashy  – anything that makes you stand out as a rich person will definitely single you out as a target to thieves.
  • Try to blend in  – a big backpacking backpack, hiking trainers, activewear… all that stuff may make you a target for petty crime, too.
  • Watch your luggage at the airport/hotel lobby  – it can go missing, so keep it close!
  • Use a money belt   – any area of Manila, you can still be a victim of petty crime (we’ve got a great recommendation for you below!)
  • Be very careful of moneychangers  – particularly on A Mabini Street in Ermita . Sketchy, tricksy, shortchanging kinda place.
  • Keep aware of your surroundings at ATMs – you never know who saw you took out all that cash -be discreet.
  • Watch out for political developments  – keep an eye on the news and follow government advice.
  • Avoid protests, demonstrations, etc. – it’s not a good idea; even the Philippine government says not to.
  • Don’t underestimate typhoons – these can literally shut down Manila. Watch the news, stock up on food, stay inside.
  • Know what to do in the event of an earthquake  – read up. It’s better being prepared a little rather than not at all.
  • If you have respiratory disease (e.g. asthma) protect against air pollution – air quality can be seriously bad in Manila; wear a mask.

That may seem like a lot to think about, but trust us: you’re going to need these travel tips in Manila to stay safe. Chances are you’ll be totally fine, however, make sure you travel smart.

There are a lot of benefits to solo travel in the Philippines . Cue overcoming challenges and growing as a person, which is all pretty rewarding stuff.

Is Manila safe to travel alone

Then again, it’s not always amazing – sometimes it can be pretty dull. In a city (especially one like Manila), you can feel even more isolated and overwhelmed. With that in mind, we’ve got a few pointers for solo travel in Manila to help your trip go super smoothly.

  • Book a decent hostel in Manila . We’d say don’t opt for ultra-budget to make sure you’ve got a nice stay. Go a cut above and stay somewhere that’s nice to return to after a day of exploring the frantic hustle and bustle of Manila.
  • Research.  No good staying at a nice hostel that’s totally boring if that sort of thing is going to drive you insane. Read reviews and find the hostel that is going to suit you best.
  • Ask the locals. People in the Philippines are pretty friendly so finding someone to hang out with shouldn’t be too tricky. Even just asking people their recommendations on what to see in the city.
  • Make friends with people staying at your hostel.  This is done as much as by simply chatting to them in the common areas, or even getting talking to them on a walking tour organised by the hostel.
  • Consider taking private transport. You might think you’re saving money by getting public transport, but honestly private transport (i.e. a taxi) isn’t much more than public transport.
  • Cool yourself down. Manila is a pretty hot place. If you’re by yourself it’s perfectly fine just to duck into a shopping mall for a bit of aircon.
  • Try to blend in a bit whilst you’re doing that though. Going around looking like you’re on some sort of urban trek isn’t a good look, so take a look at what the locals are wearing and dress down a little.
  • If you need a bit of respite from the busy bustle of the city head to Rizal Park along Manila Bay Walk.  This is a huge green space where you can watch the sunset, enjoy dinner, simply stroll around and do some people watching.
  • Make sure you carry around small denominations.  Lots of places in Manila are cash-only and won’t appreciate you coming in with your big wads of big bills. Plus the chance of you being shortchanged if you have only large denomination bills is also more likely.
  • Protect yourself from the sun and the heat. A hat, keep hydrated, sunscreen – it’s a deceivingly sweaty city. Even if it’s cloudy you can still get burned, people!
  • Get yourself a sim card with data and keep in touch with people back home. Obviously having a sim card with data will help you with maps and stuff like that, but having a sim also means being able to chat with your friends and family.
  • Don’t feel like you need to do everything. That is the best way to get burn-out. Go at your own pace. Have rest days if you don’t feel like sightseeing and go chill at a cafe, or bum around a shopping mall.

Going it alone in Manila is obviously not going to be the easiest thing to do in the world. Follow our tips and make sure that you give yourself a good grounding for exploring the city: nice hostel, people to chat with, common sense, taking it easy. You’ll soon be loving it.

Is Manila safe for solo female travellers

Manila is a stop off for many solo travellers who are backpacking the Philippines . As a solo female traveller to Manila, you might be pushing yourself outside your comfort zone. Why? Because Manila is a busy city and – especially if you’re not used to travelling by yourself – you could quickly feel overwhelmed by your new, very frenetic surroundings.

Luckily, we’ve got some safety tips for solo female travellers in Manila, so you’re all good!

  • First things first: accommodation.  The hostel scene in Manila is newer than in places like Bangkok, so don’t expect a lot of choices. Still, it pays to research. So make sure you book yourself into somewhere that’s going to make you, as a solo female traveller, feel comfortable.
  • Research. Try to find a hostel or accommodation, that’s 1) easy to get to from a main road, that’s 2) a few minutes’ (at most) from a public transport stop and which is 3) near eateries and cafes.
  • A lot of hostels in the Makati City area will have free group tours.  This is a simple, stress-free way to see the city and make friends with fellow travellers.
  • Feel free to also hire your own guide. If you don’t want to go on a group tour, that’s fine. Make sure, however, that someone can vouch for them, that they come highly recommended, and that you can trust them.
  • Hit up online groups for solo female travellers. Tips and hints on solo travel for females on pages like the Facebook group  Girls Love Travel  are endless, plus you’ll find large female-only travel communities on Instagram if you search certain hashtags (e.g. #girlsabroad  and  #girlslovetravel ). A good way to find people to meet up with, too.
  • Go out at night and enjoy the city, but this is probably best done with a group of people. Being in a group you’ll all look out for each other and most likely steer clear of any trouble.
  • Be very careful with your drinks. We said this before, but we’ll say it again: drink spiking happens. This is especially an issue for women.
  • When it comes to what to wear, you can pretty much wear what you like. However, if you don’t want too much attention, it’s probably better to dress on the conservative side . A good rule of thumb is to copy, as much as you can, what the local ladies are dressed like. It’s probably the best way to go.
  • Tell someone what you’re doing.  Whether that’s friends back home, your parents, your new dorm buddy, the staff at your hostel, you should let them know if you’re heading out for the day by yourself. It’s always better to not go completely off-grid when you’re exploring alone.
  • Of course, it’s all good to challenge yourself but don’t let that “challenge” turn into a dodgy situation or outright danger. Top tip, if you don’t feel comfortable and you really don’t want to do something that everyone else seems to be doing, don’t do it – think of your safety and know your limits.

Keep in mind our travel advice too: stay in the right area in Manila , make friends, and – if it’s all too overwhelming – get yourself on a tour. Solo travel doesn’t have to mean being uncomfortable and overwhelmed the whole time. It’s your trip, so get on a tour for ease and learn stuff!

We’ve covered the main safety concerns already, but there are a few more things to know. Read on for more detailed information on how to have a safe trip to Manila.

Is Manila safe to travel for families?

Despite being considered “unsafe” by some, Manila is safe to travel for families.

It’s definitely a unique place to take your family. Your children will get to experience a mix of cultures here, which is always pretty cool. People here are friendly, especially to children, and whilst it’s not going to be the most easygoing place in the world, you’re bound to have a good time here.

Often Manila works as a stop-off point for families that are heading off to different parts of the Philippines, which makes sense. That said, there are still a fair few child-friendly activities you can get involved with too.

Is Manila safe to travel for families

Rizal Park  is a good place to head if you’ve got kids in tow. There are playgrounds and fountains and you’ll find other local families enjoying the relative chill of this area, too.

There are a few considerations, however. One of these is the season, which is either dry or wet. From March to May, things get super hot with temperatures often hitting 40 degrees C. So you’ll want to make sure everyone’s covered up from the sun and hydrated.

Pollution is also a big problem in the Philippines, but especially in Manila. This may be a concern for those with small children, or if your little ones have respiratory problems.

There are plenty of family-friendly hotels with family rooms though, and you’ll be able to get your hands on things like nappies and formula – stuff like that – pretty easily.

Whilst cool, Manila can be a little crazy. If you’re dead-set on going, but you don’t want to navigate the sometimes overwhelming city by yourself, consider getting a guide or a car complete with driver.

Is it safe to drive in Manila?

Traffic in Manila is mental and pretty horrendous, to say the least.

Driving around the city is not for the faint-hearted. Manila’s roads are often clogged with traffic and locals have some pretty scary driving habits that you may not be used to.

We wouldn’t particularly say it would be safe or even sensible to drive in Manila. For those who do want to rent a car, however, it can be a decent way to see sights outside the city centre which can’t be reached by public transport.

Is it safe to drive in Manila

Another good option, especially if you’re in a group, is to pay for a driver to take you around. You can negotiate with a driver to pay them for the day, or you could ask at your accommodation for recommendations.

To sum it up: driving in Manila isn’t safe and we wouldn’t recommend it at all. If you really want to, it can be done, but you should be a confident driver and definitely have some experience of driving in a developing country.

Is Uber safe in Manila?

There is no Uber in Manila. However, there is Grab, and it’s safe. In fact, it’s probably the best, safest and most convenient way to get around.

It works basically like Uber except the cars registered are actually licensed taxis. You won’t language barriers, you can pay in-app, won’t have to worry about negotiating prices, get to track your journey etc. All the benefits of cab-hailing apps.

Are taxis safe in Manila?

Taxis in Manila are a bit sketchy. They don’t have a great reputation – and we’re talking even   amongst residents of Manila themselves.

You’ll have to watch out for a lot of things. One of these is something you’ll notice as soon as see one: taxis in Manila are often run-down and a bit worse for wear (to say the least).

Often the drivers will “forget” to put the meter on, and end up overcharging you – sometimes as much as twice the amount it’s supposed to be. They could also shortchange you, so it’s super imperative that you have small denominations to avoid that.

Are taxis safe in Manila

If you use them, insist politely that they put the meter on. If they tell you it’s “broken” or suggest the fare is “up to you”, just get out and find another taxi – it’s not worth pushing your point and getting into an argument about it.

Watch out at the airport for taxis whose meters seem to be ticking over faster than they should be. This is a scam. From the airport, you might want to have transport pre-arranged with your accommodation. Otherwise, there’s always those Grab Booths.

You’ll know a taxi when you see one – it looks like a taxi. They’re usually white with the company name and maybe something like “AIRCON” stencilled on the side in red, blue or green, for example. Some are yellow.

To sum up, whilst taxis in Manila are safe they’re just a bit tricky. We’d recommend Grab, instead.

Is public transportation in Manila safe?

Manila comes complete, as all major capital cities do, with a selection of public transport on offer. These different options cover the vast 1,475 square kilometres of the city, taking you from the historical centre to hotels and attractions, making it easy to get to all the stops on your Manila itinerary .

First off: buses . Local buses are pretty badly run-down (in some cases) but can be quite handy to get around the city.

A decent-ish alternative to the ever-busy MRT . They’re pretty cheap and it’s not likely that you’re going to get overly confused; people speak pretty good English and drivers can tell you where you need to get of.

manila safe public transportation

Some bus routes are going to be better for you as a tourist than others. For example, there’s one route that links Makati  and  The Fort  every ten minutes, which is handy. Some are even air-conned (yes, that means some aren’t!).

Next: jeepneys . These colourful contraptions are the iconic, customised and brightly decorated public buses that traverse Manila. They’re called jeepneys because they were originally made out of US military vehicles (i.e. Jeeps) following the Second World War. You should use them at least once just for the experience, but be aware that they’re not really comfortable.

Then there’s the MRT and the LRT , both of which are, sadly, not very user-friendly. If you can get to grips with either system or want to use them, you can by all means. However, it’s not something that’s going to be fun to use.

Public transport in Manila is safe, generally, but you should always keep your belongings close to you, especially when public transport, like the MRT, is at its busiest.

Is the food in Manila safe?

The Philippines has a ton of amazing food – and it goes without saying that you can find a whole lot of that in Manila. From Chinese influenced fish balls ( bola-bola ) and . deep-fried quails eggs ( quek-quek ) to food courts full of choice, there’s a lot on the food scene here.

Is the food in Manila safe

But there’s other stuff that gives Filipino food a different kind of reputation. Balut  for instance; a quick google image search on that one will show you that maybe you won’t want to eat that. But there’s loads of nice stuff to try – here are the best ways to go about it!

  • Don’t be afraid of street food. It’s the best way to get to grips with the city’s culinary scene. However, it’s sensible to take yourself a street food vendor or food stall that seems to have a bit of a queue going on – especially if it’s with locals.
  • Opt for stuff that’s been flash-fried on a super-high heat, or deep-fried. The high temperatures obliterate germs so stay on the safe side. On the same point, avoid uncovered, pre-cooked stuff that looks like it’s been sitting around all day.
  • Head to the trendy neighbourhood of Poblacion. Here, you’ll find the newest developments in the city’s food scene. There are tons of hip joints around here, interesting restaurants and local lifestyles to soak up.
  • Be careful with seafood. The best way to eat seafood, obviously, is fresh. The Seaside Market  has a ton of very very fresh sea-to-plate sort of places where you can enjoy tasty seafood.
  • If you’re hankering for a hamburger, make a beeline for Jollibee.  This is a homegrown, Filipino establishment of fast food with everything from burgers to fried chicken. And it’s honestly it’s so good, way better than McDonald’s. Try it out!
  • Another thing to sample is a boodle feast.  What is that? This is a totally Filipino experience, whereby a table is piled high with a whole lot of different foods to try out, all laid out on banana leaves.
  • Go easy. There’s a whole mix of food on offer in Manila, from local stuff and aforementioned fast food to Chinese and Indian cuisine. Mixing everything together so much, and overeating is probably not going to be good for you.
  • Wash your hands! Manila’s urban sprawl can leave you with some pretty grubby hands, so get some soap (or hand sanitiser) on them before you tuck into stuff – especially if it’s something you eat with your actual fingers.

There you have it. Dining in the Philippines is exciting, and Manila itself is fast becoming a place where you can not only tuck into traditional but also trendy food, and we’d say it’s safe to do so. You shouldn’t be scared to eat somewhere that looks a bit rough and ready – many people do!

Can you drink the water in Manila?

Water in Manila is probably not best drunk if you’re a traveller there. It’s not safe to drink for tourists.

Locals drink it, of course, but you? You’ll probably get a stomach bug.

Avoid it and opt for bottled water (sorry, Earth). If you’re staying in a hotel that has filtered water, bring a refillable bottle with you and some water purification tablets just in case, too. Read our in-depth review of the best travel water bottles here if you decide to do so.

Is Manila safe to live?

Manila is obviously a popular place to live for many people, which is why it’s such a busy place. How safe you are in Manila will depend, quite a lot, on where you choose to actually live in the first place.

For example, the  Central Business District  is a popular place for foreigners to live and comes complete with a vibrant nightlife. But there’s also  Makati,  with a lot of Western-style accommodation and businesses in the area you’ll feel right at home; just a few pickpockets here and there. Malls are ten a penny.

manila safe to live

These kinds of areas are more expensive than the usual sort of Southeast Asian accommodation in places like Saigon  or  Bangkok.  These pockets of living space are like living in a developed country, as opposed to other places in the city.

To up your safety levels (and levels of detachment from the place you’re actually living in) you could even choose to live in a gated community – though it comes at a cost.

Another thing to think about is pollution. This can literally affect your health. You may scoff at the idea, but you may want to think about wearing a facemask if you venture outside on particularly smoggy days.

All the safety stuff we mentioned already like petty crime as much as typhoons, you’ll need to take this into account perhaps more since you’ll be living there long term.

But generally, Manila is safe to live in. Obviously, it depends where you choose to live, and to some degree how much you pay, but still you’ll have all that the capital offers: nightclubs, big hotels, shiny business districts, malls, boutiques, fashion stores, bars, restaurants, parks.

Is it safe to rent an Airbnb in Manila?

Renting an Airbnb in Manila is a great idea. And it’s perfectly safe, as long as you read the reviews. Staying at an Airbnb during your trip will also open up new possibilities and options to experience the country.

The local hosts are known to take great care of their guests and give the absolute best recommendations of what to do and what to see. Local knowledge always goes a long way, so be sure to reach out to your hosts if you’re unsure about how to fill up your Manila itinerary!

On top of that, you’ll stay safe with the reliable Airbnb booking system. Both hosts and guests can rate each other which creates a very respectful and trustworthy interaction.

Is Manila LGBTQ+ friendly?

Luckily, Manila is known to be one of the most gay-friendly cities worldwide. The Philippines also ranks as the most gay-friendly country in Asia, so you’ve definitely got something to look forward to.

While you might get weird looks for showing public affection (which you normally won’t see anyway), you won’t have to face discrimination or violence. If you’re going over the top however, rude comments can’t be avoided. Stay culturally aware and respectful and you won’t have an issue.

Here are some quick answers to common questions about safety in Manila.

What is the most common crime issue in Manila?

Petty theft is the most common crime issue in the city. It targets locals and travellers alike, so keep an eye on your belongings and stay aware of your surroundings.

Is it dangerous in Manila?

Manila is only dangerous if you don’t travel smart. Trouble can easily find you in Manila so stay aware of your surroundings, trust your gut and do some research to prepare for your trip.

What should you avoid in Manila?

Avoid these things when visiting Manila to stay safe during your trip: – Steer clear of sketchy districts and dark side streets – Avoid Smokey Mountain if possible – Don’t leave your belongings out of sight – Stay away from drugs

Is Manila the most dangerous city in the Philippines?

No, statistically Manila doesn’t have the highest crime rate of the Phillippines. The city is actually ranking as the third most dangerous city in the country.

manila final thoughts

Yes, Manila can definitely be safe – if you stick to our travel tips and keep your eyes open for potential trouble.

We’re not going to lie, Manila is mental. This city takes the top spot when it comes to the craziest Southeast Asian capital cities. The amount of poverty,  skyscrapers, people, and actual other cities that make up this one super city… It’s enough to leave you reeling and wondering if you should explore this huge city?

However, most of it comes down to knowing what you want to do and spending less time aimlessly wandering around like you might do in more compact, less intimidating cities around the world.

Then there’s the whole “crime” thing. An easy way to not have any crime committed against you is exactly to spend less time wandering around aimlessly.

There’s no end of stuff you can see and do in the capital of the Philippines. It’s an interesting city, we can’t fault that. How much you end up loving it depends on how much of an open mind you approach it.

Hello, I just came back from Manila. I used to live there from 1998 till 2004. Nothing ever happenned to me. I would resume everything to these 2 words: common sense You are in a foreign country, inside a huge Megapolis. This is not a sleeping city, it is vibrant and people are not rude but helpful. Be nice and you will get a long way there.

It seems like your publicity for Manila is worse than other cities in other countries. Have you been to Los Angeles,Detroit, Chicago and New York? Manila is better off and more safer than these cities in the U.S where you can’t even walk at night time . I used to live in these cities where violence, mobs, killed etc. never stopped. Drugs are very common in the streets where gangsters fights for street ownership. Now in Duterte’s administration, everything is changed and pretty much safer than the previous administration and crimes are at minimal.

I think we offered a fair and even handed assessment of Manilla.

If you read our guides to LA, NY and Chicago, you will see that we traded them in the same way. PS we have visited LA, NY and Chicago and it is simply NOT true that you cannot walk the streets at night.
