The Golden Hinde Night Voyage

  • Things to do, Quirky events

Time Out says

Spend the night - the whole night - on one of London's most historic ships. This immersive role play event gives you the chance to become a member of The Golden Hinde's crew: after a traditional dinner of Tudor vegetable stew, you'll be assigned a role (gunner, officer, barber surgeon etc.) and share battle stories over glasses of grog before bunking down in the ship's quarters. The following morning, you'll wake up to a hearty breakfast before you depart for dry land. This event is suitable for children over six, though all children will need to be accompanied by an adult.

What the Redhead said

A Night Voyage on the Golden Hinde, London

Disclosure: We were invited on this break for the purpose of this review however all opinions are my own.

Last weekend we were invited for probably the most unique experience we have ever been a part of. A Night Voyage on the Golden Hinde is an overnight, fully immersive experience that lets you take on roles aboard the famous ship, learning about life at sea in 1577. I had no idea what to expect but we were all excited for the evening to begin.

A Night Voyage on the Golden Hinde

We were given a full itinerary before our Golden Hinde sleepover and told what to bring – sleeping bags and mats, clothes to sleep in, toothbrush and a torch mainly. The emphasis was on travelling light and really throwing yourself into the experience – so that’s what we did.

A Night Voyage on the Golden Hinde

When we arrived on the Golden Hinde we were split into groups and got into our costumes – oversized shirts to throw on over our clothes, a belt to show which group we were in and hats. It really helped us get into character and set the scene for the evening.

A Night Voyage on the Golden Hinde

When everyone had arrived the show began. I say show because our hosts were actors, performing parts but it wasn’t like being at the theatre. It was so fully immersive with everyone participating and everyone having a role to play. It was fantastic!

The evening started with a bit about the rules aboard Sir Francis Drake’s ship – how to go up and down ladders, no leaning over the sides of the ship and no stealing or swearing! We were told about how people were punished in 1577 and the children were so engaged – I’ve never seen them so completely into an experience before.

A Night Voyage on the Golden Hinde

After that we set off in our groups. There were three groups and about thirty people in total. We started off with the Master of the ship, getting to know each other and finding out that, for this experience, we were all men. Women would never have been allowed on board!

A Night Voyage on the Golden Hinde

We had cider (apple juice) and biscuits and had a chat around the Master’s table before learning how to pull the anchor up. From the very first moment I realised how much I was going to learn about life at sea and also what utter hard work it would have been back then. It was an experience for all of us.

A Night Voyage on the Golden Hinde

We learnt about the different roles on board the ship, the names of the different sides of the ship and how seafarers would tell the time at sea. We spent time both above deck and below deck, giving us such a full experience of the whole Golden Hinde.

A Night Voyage on the Golden Hinde

The Golden Hinde is in the heart of London, in a really busy part of the South Bank. This meant that whilst going through our experience so many people were watching from the shore – again, I say shore, but the Golden Hinde is in a dry dock. We didn’t go anywhere but it really felt like we did!

A Night Voyage on the Golden Hinde

Throughout the experience the main glass doors onto the Golden Hinde were locked. No random passers by could come aboard but they could stand and watch – most finding it really entertaining or even joining in for the noisy parts!

A Night Voyage on the Golden Hinde

Next we were with the Gunner who showed us how to fire cannons. I realised that before this I knew there was a cannon and a cannon ball but not much else – finding out the amount of work involved in firing and reloading just one cannon was eye opening and the children loved taking part in the action.

Dinner on board was provided and it was a really nice vegetable stew and plenty of bread to go with it. It’s quite a basic meal but one that fit well with the experience. Tea and coffee were available after dinner and it was just the right amount of down time before carrying on with the experience.

A Night Voyage on the Golden Hinde

We learnt to sword fight, learning three basic moves for both attacking and defending before all having a turn. This was great fun and part of the experience that all the adults and children got involved with.

A Night Voyage on the Golden Hinde

The last person we met was the Barber Surgeon who looked after the crew’s hair as well as being the medical help on board ship. We found out all about the things people believed in 1577 about how you could heal them, the tools that were used for surgery and the ailments that sailors would often suffer from.

We then found ourselves under attack and had to hide in the hold before peace was restored and we went back on deck for the grand finale of the trip. We got a coin to take home with us and then got ready to wind down and sleep on board the ship.

We all set ourselves amongst the cannons on the gun deck, rolling out our mats and setting up camp. This part of the experience wasn’t very well organised as we all had to carve out our own space for our families – I imagine if it was one big group like a school trip or scouts there would be a lot more order to it. But, we found our space and set up camp for the night.

A Night Voyage on the Golden Hinde

The ship has two toilets on the bottom deck which had enough space for an adult and child to go into them to get ready for bed. Dave and I took it in turns to take a child each and it worked fine. The toilets are clean and basic but they were fine for our needs.

The experience finished just after 8:30pm and lights went out at 10pm. By about 9:15pm we were settled in bed, as were a few other families but a handful of children were left to their own devices – playing hide and seek, running and jumping over all the sleeping bags and even attempting sack races in their sleeping bags at one point. Any experience where you are sharing space with other people can definitely be impacted positively or negatively by the people you are sharing with and that was definitely the case in this instance.

Just after midnight it started raining which came through onto our deck in places. Some people had to find somewhere else to sleep and we woke up to our deck being very wet in the morning.

One member of staff stayed on board with us all night who cooked and helped with anything we needed. She helped people find alternative places to sleep and was just a constant point of contact if we needed anything.

Breakfast in the morning was bread, cheese and fruit – apples, bananas and satsumas – as well as tea, coffee and hot chocolate. It was a welcome start to the day and by about 8am we were ready to depart.

We had a really great time on our Night Voyage on the Golden Hinde and I can imagine it being a really great school or scout trip. LP and Little Man loved the experience and it was so different to typical guided tours. The children gave the sleepover a double thumbs up each and I know that their friends would love it too. If their school offered it as an experience I know how well received it would be and it’s definitely something I am so glad I have done with the children.

A Night Voyage on the Golden Hinde

A sleepover on the Golden Hinde would be a great family experience for a birthday treat or just a weekend in London. To make the most of it I would suggest taking ear plugs and an eye mask, investing in an inflatable mat and making sure you set up camp towards the end of the gun deck in case it rains. If you sign up knowing the sleep isn’t going to be great but throwing yourself into it anyway then I know you’ll have a great time!

Escape from the Golden Hinde review – London with kids

How do you add even more fun to an escape room in London with kids – by setting it aboard a replica of the Tudor galleon in which Sir Francis Drake sailed around the world, for Escape from the Golden Hinde.

Side view of the Golden Hinde replica Tudor galleon in Southwark, one mast seen against a blue sky and buildings behind - my Escape from the Golden Hinde review of a new escape room in London with kids

review visit *

Invited along to review the brand new Golden Hinde escape room, it was the first time we’d returned since sleeping on board overnight for the Golden Hinde Night Voyage , and my daughter was thrilled to be walking up the gangplank once more, from the Thameside path in Southwark where it’s docked.

While I’m a big fan of escape rooms, it was also the first time my nine-year-old was attempting one – and it’s no spoiler to reveal it was a big hit with both of us.

Speaking of spoilers, I won’t be sharing all the secrets (or the answers to the puzzles!) in this review of Escape from the Golden Hinde, but you will obviously get a peek at what lies in store – so if you don’t want any clues at all, click here to book . Otherwise, read on to find out if we made it out within 60 minutes…

Need to know: Escape from the Golden Hinde with kids

Designed by Secret Studio, the team behind London’s top-rated escape room, The Golden Hinde escape room is aimed at kids aged 10+ but if you’re visiting as a family with younger ages, it’s definitely still an option.

A few weeks short of her tenth birthday, I had worried my daughter might get bored if the adults in the group solved all the puzzles without her, but she not only got involved, she had her own very strong opinions, and even spotted a few things before the rest of us.

Three adults and a child all trying to solve a puzzle, with various maps and other items laid out on the table of the ship's cabin during the Golden Hinde escape room with kids - my Escape from the Golden Hinde review

Having confidently announced that I didn’t think something was important, I was forced to eat my words when it turned out to be vital – good job we had her along really!

She also got into the spirit of the race against time, reminding us that the ship would sink if we failed in our task: while she was never seriously concerned we would be consigned to a watery doom if we didn’t crack the challenges, it was fun to see her embracing it.

So while a group of younger kids would struggle on their own, if your family includes a seven or eight-year-old who loves puzzles, definitely don’t write it off.

There is a kids version due to be launched, and until then, children under 10 are welcome to play the adult version for free. Tickets normally cost £43 – although there are discounts of up to 24% until mid September – with a maximum of two kids per crew, minimum age four, and you need to have at least three paying players per crew.

My daughter with some of the chocolate coin treasure and colourful wooden compass design during Escape from the Golden Hinde with kids - my review

It’s worth knowing that while your crew on Escape from the Golden Hinde are all ‘ghosts’, as you take a voyage through time as well as through the ship, we wouldn’t actually have known unless they told us – there’s no spooky wails or spectres jumping out at you, if you’re worried about kids having nightmares.

There are some steep steps on board, but you won’t be racing up and down them and you’re also provided with protective headgear before you start.

Tudor galleons don’t have a lot of headroom, and distracted by the task of trying to work out the clues, I think we all managed to bump our heads at least once, so these came in very handy – if anything, kids are less at risk here than taller adults!

One word of warning: there are no toilets on board, so you’re advised to go before you arrive (as it were). There are cafes nearby in Southwark, including right next to the ship though.

Escape from the Golden Hinde review

We’d been primed to appear on the gangplank precisely on time, and boldly declare ‘We pledge to save the captain’ – if you’re too cool for that, you do also have the option of calling out ‘Let me in’.

Much to my daughter’s disgust, I am not remotely cool, so having caught the eye of one of the members of the ghost crew, who later introduced himself as Stinky Pete (such an unfair nickname, he’d had a bath at Christmas!), we boarded, watched with interest by the crowd on St Mary Overie Dock enjoying the June sunshine by the Thames.

Crew member Stinky Pete on the deck of the Golden Hinde with ladders to the higher deck in the background at the briefing for our escape room game - my Escape from the Golden Hinde review with kids

Warned not to get there early, to avoid spoiling the surprise, you also can’t get there late as there are specific time slots – allow around 90 minutes for the whole experience, depending (obviously) how fast you solve it all.

That includes the briefing beforehand, a chance to chat about how it went afterwards, and the 60 minute challenge to Escape from the Golden Hinde (and maybe a few extra minutes if you’re really close and your crew are feeling generous).

We’d also been warned that less than 50% make it out in less than an hour. Challenge accepted!

With our protective headgear in place (a very non-Tudor approach to health and safety), Stinky Pete taught us a Tudor salute before filling us in on some background .

The ship has actually sailed around the world twice: once back in the 16th century when the original set out under Sir Francis Drake in 1577, and again in the 1970s when this reconstruction was built and retraced its course.

Wearing my protective helmet covered in black and yellow striped material before heading to play the Golden Hinde escape room - my Escape from the Golden Hinde review

These warring time periods have landed the ship in its current predicament, so only an hour remains to voyage through time on a quest to save Sir Francis and stop the Golden Hinde from sinking.

Armed with a lantern and one piece of advice to start us off, the door was unlocked and we headed into the shadow of the ship…

It’s pretty evident once you squash into the first space, that you won’t be spending all 60 minutes in there (unless you can’t solve the first puzzle of course) so it’s not giving too much away to reveal that our hour’s challenge also took us through the different decks and rooms of the Golden Hinde.

My daughter wearing her stripy covered protective helmet and holding a rope in part of the Golden Hinde - my review of Escape from the Golden Hinde with kids

Along the way, there are red herrings galore, a chance to have a tot of rum (actual rum if you’re expecting apple juice, although there’s Coke and water too…) and some surprises in store.

You’ll also need to ponder the question of whether Sir Francis Drake is the seafaring hero of history or far more of a pirate than the stories tell.

View across a table with board, map, paper, photo, and chocolate coin wrapper, some of the items as part of the Golden Hinde escape room game in London - my Escape from the Golden Hinde review

While the focus is firmly on the puzzles rather than a history lesson, you’ll definitely learn a few things along the way, which is a lovely bonus, as is the treasure you’ll find – chocolate coins dotted about.

You’ll be faced with symbols and diagrams, ancient parchments and almost equally ancient tape players, and have a chance to get hands on with maps, ropes and puppets – and the crew are always nearby if you need the occasional hint (and make you laugh), though don’t expect anyone to give you the answers.

View of a suspended wooden disc with symbols and Roman numerals on, part of the Golden Hinde escape room - my review of Escape from the Golden Hinde with kids

Needless to say, there will be a few moments where you can’t believe you missed the obvious as well as plenty of a-ha! moments.

Then suddenly, we were at the end. Success! We emerged on deck once more, blinking in the light, to the news that we had escaped in 52 minutes. Smug? Absolutely.

The Golden Hinde escape room: my verdict

So should you try Escape from the Golden Hinde with kids? A resounding yes! If you’re already a fan of escape rooms, being aboard a Tudor ship just adds to the fun, and it’s a great theme for families too.

If you’ve never tried an escape room, this is a really memorable one to start with, and the puzzles meant kids could easily get hands on as part of a team.

There’s slightly more of an interactive element here with the ghost crew involvement, rather than the standard ‘locked in a room’ experience, as well as the twist of experiencing two very different time periods.

Sign for the new Golden Hinde escape room on the side of the replica Tudor galleon, masts seen against the blue sky - my Escape from the Golden Hinde review

And while you’re challenged along the way, there’s a chance for younger team members to tackle the different tasks so they won’t be standing around watching as the older players do all the work.

After having to close for most of the past two years (Tudor ships are not well designed for social distancing!), it was fantastic to be back on board again too – you can also visit once more when the escape room game isn’t running.

One of the more unusual things to do in London with kids , this should definitely be on your list for summer.

Disclosure: We were given a free session of Escape from the Golden Hinde in exchange for this review – all opinions and failure to spot at least one really obvious clue for ages are my own

Unusual Sleepovers in London | Golden Hinde Night Voyage

Unusual Sleepovers in London | Golden Hinde Night Voyage

Whilst most of England were watching their teams’ final World Cup match, my daughters (aged 8 & 6) and I caught the train to Southwark, where they excitedly jumped aboard the Golden Hinde for an unusual sleepover in London… it was set in 1577.

As per instructions we arrived at 5pm with our pyjamas, sleeping bags, foam sleep mats, toothbrushes and toothpaste. I also packed a change of clothes, a book each, a night light and some emergency rations, in case the promised vegetable stew didn’t go down well.

The Golden Hinde is nestled in a small dry dock amongst the hustle and bustle of borough market. As we boarded the ship we greeted by the welcoming crew of four actors; the captain, the barber surgeon, the gunner and the cook. There were three other families aboard; one celebrating their daughters’ 10th birthday. There were 9 children on board in total aged from 6 upwards to about 11. Most of our fellow visting-crew had visited the ship before for daytime activities and were very excited to be returning to sleep-over.

Unusual Sleepovers in London | Golden Hinde Night Voyage

The immersive theatre began as soon as we were all aboard. We were led below deck to change into our ‘crew’ attire; a jacket, belt and hat for children and adults alike. Some fun ‘orientation games’ followed on deck as we all tried to get to grips with our ports and starboards.

We were taken to the Captain’s Quarters where we were shown the ropes whilst enjoying a tankards of ale (aka apple juice). The Captain entertained all the children with a potted history of the Golden Hinde and explained Sir Francis Drake’s mission and hatred of the Spanish fleet. Below deck, Barber Surgeon took us through the gruesome art of 16th century medicine, when most treatments feature blood letting. Whilst I may have felt a little queasy at this point, the children loved hearing all the details. On the Gun Deck, the Gunner taught the how to load and shoot a minion (small cannon). The children volunteered to roll the cannon across the deck and take turns as powder monkeys. Supper was an authentic vegetable stew, bread and water, served at two long tables in the well scrubbed decks below, which most seemed to enjoy.

Unusual Sleepovers in London | Golden Hinde Night Voyage

The grande finale was the attack of the Spanish Fleet. The children practised their cannon-firing, and then we all took cover below deck as the Captain battled to protect the ship. Thankfully on this occasion he was successful and peace and calm was restored.

The actors had a remarkable ability to engage all the children and kept them enthralled as they learnt life aboard the ship in 1577. They were also well versed in responding to little people’s banter and increasing excitement as the evening progressed, staying in character right up to bedtime.

Unusual Sleepovers in London | Golden Hinde Night Voyage

There was a noticeable change of tone about 9pm as bedtime approached. We were shown where to go in case of a fire alarm and then moved below deck so the children could change into pyjamas for a bedtime story, read by one of the actors. The families rolled out their mats, pillows and sleeping bags . Blankets were provided for those wishing to travel light, or really embrace an authentic experience. There were two clean but small washrooms on the lower deck where you could brush teeth have a quick wash and change. The Golden Hinde is not a large ship, and the gun deck where we were sleeping did not have enough head room for an adult to stand (I forgot this to my peril when I woke in the morning). However there was plenty of room for everyone to stretch out comfortably. After the bedtime story was over, adults too settled down and lights were turned out at 10pm.

Unusual Sleepovers in London | Golden Hinde Night Voyage

The children slept remarkably well given that there were 9 children and 7 adults in one space. A couple of the actors slept on the top deck to ensure security during the night. It was a very hot evening in London that night, but the ship remained cool with a few windows open. The heat and proximity of the nearest pub did mean we could hear a lot of World Cup revelry during the night, but eventually I got some sleep too. When we woke we enjoyed a breakfast of bread and milk, with tea and coffee available for the adults. After packing up and a saying goodbye to our fellow crew we headed back to 2018 and set off for an early morning train back home.

Unusual Sleepovers in London | Golden Hinde Night Voyage

This really was a unique adventure. My daughters absolutely loved it, and hopefully picked up an appreciation for a little bit of history along the way. The sleeping part is not for the feint-hearted or those too attached to their modern day comforts, but the amazing intimate and immersive experience is well worth it. The talented team at the Golden Hinde have numerous events going this summer and the next unusual sleepover experience is scheduled for 8 September
