The best carry on luggage to buy in 2024

By Lauren Burvill and Charley Ward

best carry on luggage cabin case

It’s a rookie error that many of us have been guilty of – carry on luggage that’s too large, too heavy, or too uncomfortable to carry. I’m ashamed to admit that, despite having worked in travel for more than 10 years, I recently, and accidentally, overpacked my hand luggage on a flight from Australia to London. Much to the frustration of my fellow Qatar Airlines passengers, I had to do the embarrassing scramble of throwing what I could grab into our check-in suitcases. All that time spent organising was destroyed in a moment of panic.

If like me, you’ve been caught out at check-in, you’ll know that the wrong carry-on luggage can ruin a trip before it even begins. This is why thought and research are required when choosing the right cabin bag for your flight – even more so than for a check-in suitcase. To save you the admin, we’ve found the best luggage to stash in the plane’s overhead bins.

Which is the best carry-on luggage at-a-glance?

  • Best hardshell: Away The Original Carry-On, 55.1X34.8X22.9cm, 3.2kg, £220

  • Best light suitcase: July Carry On Light, 54X36X19cm, 1.8kg, £195
  • Best budget price: Aerolite cabin luggage 50x40x20cm, 2.1kg, £59.99
  • Best underseat cabin bag : Cabin Max Manhattan travel bag, 40X20X25, 0.5kg, £29.95

How we tested the best carry-on luggage

Image may contain Adult Person Baggage Clothing Footwear Shoe Accessories Bag Handbag Plant and Coat

Every case on this list has been has been independently tested and reviewed by our editors Charley Ward and Lauren Burvill . We run each piece of carry-on luggage through a test in office, and then pass the cases on to members of the wider team to take with them on a flight for further testing. When testing, we look for overall quality, spinner wheels, TSA-approved locks, design features such as exterior pockets, charging ports or laptop compartments, and value for money. We also assess the weight and size, overall function and visual appeal.

The best hard shell carry-on luggage

Pros: Durable, easy to manoeuvre, compression pad and straps, comes with a laundry bag, multiple colour options.

Cons: Colours sell out quickly, light colours are prone to scuffs and scratches, 0.1cm over the height allowance of some airlines, including Ryanair.

Size: 55.1x34.8x22.9cm

Weight: 3.2kg

Away's recognisable original carry-on case is one of the best on the market – beloved by many of our editors and numerous celebrities, including Margot Robbie and Meghan Markle. As one of the first luggage brands to rethink suitcases through a millennial lens, Away has been cleverly perfecting its cases to combine equal parts style and function. The real highlight of this carry-on case is the quality, particularly the wheels. Inside, both mesh compartments can be firmly secured – one with a zip, the other with a compression system with straps – so there is plenty of packing space and your case will remain neatly organised.

Editor review: “I travel with this Away carry-on case all the time, particularly back and forth from London to Lisbon where I've been living for the last year. No matter how much I pack in this case, it's always so smooth and easy to navigate through busy airports thanks to its spinner wheels and sturdy frame,” Abigail Malbon , acting audience growth manager.

Pros: Lightweight suitcase, great value price, large range of colour options, multiple compartments inside, luggage sets available.

If you're a frequent flyer looking for a zippy hard-shell suitcase, Antler's Clifton cabin bag is a winner. The durable yet lightweight polycarbonate case features a twist-grip telescopic handle, making it very easy to wheel it around the airport at speed. Not only is this case a great size and quality, but they also look smart too, with seven subdued shades to choose from.

Editor review: “I have this case in the mineral colour as part of the full travel set . This case is the one I use the most and it's just a dream to travel with. I really love the two zip-up pouches inside. If you don't travel with packing cubes, these can do a similar job and are ideal for storing delicates and toiletries,” Lauren Burvill , commerce editor.

travel carry on bag uk

Pros: Very light, impressively quiet, smooth action, scratch-resistant shell

Cons: Relatively small side, no laptop sleeve or additional pockets

Size: H54 x W36 x D19cm

Weight: 1.8kg

July asserts that this is the world’s lightest double-wheel suitcase, and while we can’t verify this claim, it’s certainly the lightest one we’ve ever used. As such, we’re crowning it our best lightweight luggage pick. This was much appreciated when manhandling it in and out of the overhead compartments, as was its whisper-quiet action, even while trundling over a notoriously bumpy pavement. This was something that truly impressed me. There are nine colours to choose from, and all July carry-ons and checked bags can be personalised.

Editor review: “I travelled with this recently on a weekend trip to Palma and managed to squeeze in four dresses, my washbag , straighteners and two pairs of shoes. Next time I’ll use some compression packing cubes to maximise capacity further. Overall it feels expensive, with a sturdy handle and strong polycarbonate shell that withstood several knocks on its first outing.” Charley Ward , commerce writer

travel carry on bag uk

Pros:  Lightweight, 100-day trial policy, unlikely to scuff.

Cons:  Colours appear brighter in real life, expandable handle is a little sticky.

Size:  50X33X23cm

The Canadian brand famed worldwide for its sleek backpacks recently launched its heritage hardshell luggage collection, including both checked luggage and a carry-on style. The compact and lightweight suitcases are made from a 100% polycarbonate EcoSystem™ Hardshell, with 70% of each suitcase made from recycled road barricade material. Inside the carry-on, the case has one large mesh zip compartment with an additional smaller pocket and compression straps on the other. We love the simplicity of it all, but be warned: the colours appear much brighter in real life compared to online – the pastel yellow shade, in reality, is closer to a neon tennis ball.

Editor review: “This carry-on suitcase is on the smaller side, but it's perfect for me as I do a lot of short trips. It means I never have to worry about which airline I'm flying with and what dimensions they allow. I've taken this with me on multiple trips, and it's very durable, showing virtually no signs of wear and tear to date. I also personally love the cheerful bright colour,” Sarah James , deputy digital editor.

travel carry on bag uk

Pros: Classic look, garment bag hook.

Cons: Not the most lightweight carry-on, being the heaviest on our list.

Size: 55x38x20cm

Weight: 4.6kg

Leave it to Bric's to create the most beautiful and functional hand luggage on the market. The heritage brand has been crafting travel bags and leather goods out of the  Lake Como  region since the 1950s. Their cabin case is a smaller version of their Bellagio suitcase, with a shell made from lightweight Makrolon® polycarbonate along with vegetable-tanned leather trimmings that not only look smart but also help to prevent scuffing. Inside the lined case features organisation pockets, a padded laptop sleeve and a garment bag hook and space for three hangers. As with all Brics luggage, the Bellagio suitcase comes with a five-year warranty.

travel carry on bag uk

Pros: Organisational pockets, zip-up divider, leather luggage tag, stylish design and interior.

Cons: Lighter colours are prone to scuffs and scratches, doesn't fit within Air France, Ryanair and Emirates cabin bag allowance.

Size: 56X45X25cm

The leather handles with contrast stitching, the little round logo – the little details that made us notice The Portable Porter's carry-on case. Inside there's even more to discover, the biggest surprise being the bespoke monogrammed lining (in the yellow case, it's a cheery multicoloured geometric print) made from recycled plastic bottles. On one side of the case are three pockets, including a full zip divider, and two smaller pockets – one with a water-resistant laundry inside, the other storing a round leather luggage tag. A compression pad and straps are on the other side of the case.

travel carry on bag uk

Pros: Smooth, sturdy spinner wheels and a textured finish add to its overall durability

Cons: No charger, could use a few additional pockets

Weight: 3.7kg

Dimensions: 55 x 35 x 23cm

As with the Aviator Grand, Paravel's carry-on is beloved for more than just its retro Wes Anderson - style designs. It's made using eco-friendly materials, like recycled zippers and a lining crafted out of upcycled plastic water bottles, and comes in beautiful shades like Scout Tan and Safari Green. Inside, one half zips fully closed and has an additional zip pocket of its own, while the other is covered by a compression board. It's a favourite of US Traveller senior editor Megan Spurrell, who has brought it on trips to Mexico City, Lisbon, Los Angeles, and more.

travel carry on bag uk

Pros: Comfortable handle, fairly easy to clean

Cons: Although the beige colour is incredibly pretty, it gets dirty very quickly; I would recommend a darker colour

Weight: 3.8kg

Dimensions: 58 x 40 x 25cm

Béis is a favourite luggage brand for our team over in the US, who’ve tried a number of its softside cases and weekender bags, before getting their hands on its carry-on. Unsurprisingly, it was a hit. “I would recommend this for a traveller who is an exclusive team carry-on member,” US commerce producer Paris Wilson says. She managed to fit at least 14 outfits, plus four pairs of shoes and two purses, inside on a recent trip to the Florida Keys. It’s lightweight and easy to manoeuvre: – “I was able to bring it down from the overhead bin myself as well as move it in and out of the trunk of the rental car easily” – and easy on the eyes as well: “I got so many compliments on how pretty the carry-on was while in the airport and on holiday. The colour is beautiful, it’s an ideal size, and the ribbing on the exterior adds some really cool dimensions.”

travel carry on bag uk

Pros: Smooth glide, TSA-approved combination lock, the expansion capabilities

Cons: Mistaken identity – given their popularity, get a unique colour or add your favourite sticker to the outer hard shell to help identify yours if you wind up checking it

Weight: 3.6kg

Dimensions: 56 x 36 x 23cm

We’ve tried several Away suitcases and the Flex is our pick for overpackers and times you need a little more space. It gives travellers an additional 2.25" of packing space when expanded, bringing the capacity up from just under 40L to 46.7L. Used by US Traveler journalist Lara Kramer for trips including a one-week trip to London, it earned points for rolling smoothly across almost any surface, thanks to its 360° spinner wheels.

travel carry on bag uk

Pros: Lightweight, durable, and easy to move around and lift

Cons: Only available in a few standard colours and there really isn’t anything that stands out about it to help you know it’s yours.

Weight: 2.9kg

Dimensions: 54 x 38 x 23cm

On the other end of the price spectrum, there is this hard side carry-on from Amazon. Thanks to its affordable price, roomy size, spinner wheels, and built-in TSA lock, it has racked up tons of positive reviews on Amazon. Our US associate commerce editor Meaghan Kenny agrees with those reviews, calling it “an overpacker's dream suitcase.”

travel carry on bag uk

Pros: Compression straps and pad, easy to close, really good-looking

Cons: Not quite capacious enough

Weight: 3.9kg

Dimensions: 56 x 35 x 23cm

This particular designer carry-on may ring a bell for Succession fans – Carl Friedrik pieces were featured more than once during the show's run. It's also US editorial assistant Charlie Hobbs' go-to, who has brought it to Mérida in the Yucatan, his parents’ house in Connecticut for Christmas and Easter, to the North Fork of Long Island, and to Chicago. Outside, “This case is gorgeous – beautiful contrasts between the grey of the polycarbonate shell and the delicious slivers of warm leather.” Inside, he says, “There are two very useful sets of compression straps and one (removable, also useful) compression pad which one might as I did mistake for a laptop case at first glance.” And perhaps the highest praise: “After nearly a year of use, it still looks brand new.”

travel carry on bag uk

Pros: Stylish, removable hanging wash bag, luggage tag and jewellery pouch included, vibrant patterned inner

Cons: Only two wheels, relatively small

Size: 47 x 32 x 18cm

Weight: 3.5kg

With their vintage effect, striking leather straps and shiny gold locks, Steamline cases are head-turners. You'll certainly stand out among the boring black cabin bag cohort in the airport – and there are plenty of matching pieces to complete your set. This little carry-on case is lightweight and spacious enough to pack for two nights comfortably, with lots of little pockets to keep your jewellery and travel-sized toiletries easily in hand. We also appreciated the hanging washbag, which was a nice touch and one not seen in many cabin cases on this list. This suitcase handles fine with two wheels, but those used to a four-wheel spinner may balk a little to begin with at the lack of additional function.

The best carry-on luggage with external pockets

Pros: Four colour options, multiple internal pockets, outer pocket expands, great value price, one of the best lightweight suitcases we’ve tried.

Cons: 1cm over the height allowance of some airlines, including Ryanair.

Size: 56X35X23cm

Weight: 3.3kg

The zippy and lightweight Clifton cabin case is one of Antler's best sellers. The rolling polycarbonate suitcase has all that you could need for everyday travel – twist-grip handle, double lock, waterproof and mesh pockets inside – but what makes this stand out from other classic hard cases is the external pocket. The full zip pocket features multiple compartments as well as a padded slip pocket that can fit a tablet of 15.6-inch laptop, allowing easy-to-reach storage for all of your on-the-go items.

travel carry on bag uk

Pros: Won’t scuff or scratch, external zip-up pocket with padded laptop sleeve, internal compression pad, smart colour options.

Cons: Minimal internal pockets and zip-up compartments; can be difficult to align the closure and clasp it shut when the case is full.

Size: 55X38X25cm

Weight : 4.3kg

For a case that looks and feels like it means business, Carl Friedrik has you covered. Their carry-on case is all slick and shiny, from the studs lining the opening to the tan Italian leather handles and detailing. The snap-shut locks make this hard shell case stand out from the rest. Instead of fiddly zips, the case is secured with a unique aluminium lock frame – for extra security, you can use the combination lock feature. There is a zip on the external pocket, allowing for easy access and storage of your laptop and documents in the padded sleeve and additional compartments.

Editor review: “My favourite feature is the hard shell outer-casing which contains a convenient and safe pocket for a laptop. The lockable feature means all of your belongings are super safe. The only downside is that if you fill this case to the brim you'll struggle to shut it without fabric getting caught in the clasp,” Sophie Knight , visuals editor.

travel carry on bag uk

Pros: Lockable external zip-up pocket with multiple compartments, expandable zip system, compression. straps, large wheels, USB port charger.

Cons: No compression pad, prone to fingerprint marks, slightly cumbersome to reach the hidden USB port, power bank not included.

Size: 55X40X20cm

Makers of the Swiss Army Knife, Victorinox, have applied the same Swiss precision and innovative design to their luggage range. Their expandable global carry-on is one of their best sellers. It is full of secret compartments and features, from the lockable external pocket with four separate storage compartments to the USB port hidden behind a compartment that folds out to reveal a tiny ballpoint pen, luggage ID tag, and SIM card pin. While some cases sacrifice less main compartment room for the external pocket, this makes up for it with the expandable zip system, offering 20% additional space. Even though the weight is on par with the other cases on the list, this feels like a heavy-duty case thanks to the larger wheels, making it a suitable solution for navigating bumpy cobblestone streets.

travel carry on bag uk

Pros: Range of colours and finishes, zip-up mesh screens on both sides.

Cons: No compression pad, outer pocket does not expand.

Weight: 3.4kg

Engineered in Germany, Horizn Studios specialises in luggage with a lifetime warranty, made from all-vegan materials, and sent to you using neutral shipping. There's a lot to choose from – their Circle One range is made from a plant-based hard shell – but in terms of quality, price and function, our pick is the M5 cabin bag, a partly recycled hardshell case with a front laptop pocket, recycled polyester lining and enough space to last a five-day trip. The cabin bag comes with a luggage tag, and dust protector as standard, with the option to personalise the case or even upgrade to the smart version that comes with a removable charger and compression pad

travel carry on bag uk

Pros: External pockets, lightweight, great value price tag, next-day delivery with Prime.

Cons: Basic design, not the most durable suitcase on our list.

Size: 50x40x20cm

Weight: 2.1kg

When it comes to size, weight, price, design and quick delivery, Aerolite's cabin suitcase (available on  Amazon ) ticks all the boxes. The dimensions of the case fit within most airline allowances including British Airways and easyJet, while the weight of the case comes in at a very light 2.3kg. Of all the features, it's the two outer pockets that make this one a winner, plus it has a great value price.

Editor review: “I've travelled with this case a couple of times on short city breaks. For the price, it does a good job, and the external pockets are handy for easy access. If you load up the case too much, especially the top, when it's standing upright, the case can often topple over. But otherwise, it's a great budget option,” Lauren Burvill, commerce editor.

travel carry on bag uk

Pros:  External zip-up pocket, removable compression pad, laundry and shoe bags.

Cons: Scuffs but comes with a sponge for rectifying, front pocket zipper can be difficult to manage.

Size: 55x35x22cm

Weight : 3.5kg

Born out of Vancouver, Monos approached luggage with a less is more design philosophy, as seen in their sleek carry-on pro case. The hardshell style has three interior pockets and three zippered pouches, all accessed from the front pocket, making it incredibly easy to travel with your laptop and providing a safe place for documents, passports and chargers. I greatly appreciated this feature as it saved me the embarrassment of rummaging through my suitcase on the airport floor. The interior of the carry-on has a removable compression pad and a zippered pocket for flat items. My favourite features were the silver ion-coated laundry bag and the two shoe bags. I recently took the case on a weekend break and loved how the compartments let me separate my different clothing items and create an easy-to-manage laundry bag once I arrived home. Amber Port

Editor review: “I've taken this chic yet practical hardside suitcase with me to Crete, Paris and Chichester (we love a staycation!), and my favourite part has to be the front pocket. It gives me easy access to essential items like my passport, wallet and chargers while keeping them organised and, most importantly, safe,” Amber Port , Audience Growth Manager.

travel carry on bag uk

Pros: Lightweight, adjustable external straps, zip-up dividers, range of colours.

Cons: None that we can see.

Size: 51x32.5x23cm

Weight: 2.42kg

If you're just needing a suitcase to take on weekend breaks, look for durable and roomy styles with trolley wheels that can handle pesky cobblestone streets. This Eastpak cabin case has clever adjustable straps on the outside so you can ensure your luggage will fit within the allocated size allowance.

travel carry on bag uk

Pros: Front pocket, a rarity for hard-shell bags, plus more internal compartments; comes with a removable charger

Cons: Not expandable, so less forgiving for overpackers

Dimensions: 58 x 38 x 25cm

Arlo Skye isn’t an especially well-known suitcase brand in the UK, but it’s a favourite of some of our US team – especially senior editor Megan Spurrell, who has taken it on both weekend trips and week-long adventures. “This bag has never let me down,” she says, crediting its surprisingly roomy inner and sturdy shell: “This suitcase looks sleek, but is totally durable. I’ve checked it on a few occasions, and it always survives being chucked onto the baggage carousel with little to no evidence of the journey.”

travel carry on bag uk

Pros: Lightweight, range of colours, front pocket, handles smoothly

Cons: Expensive, handle takes up quite a bit of internal space

Size: 55 x 39.5 x 23cm

This cabin case has been carefully designed to make light work of whizzing through security. The front pocket opens out completely flat, and three internal pockets are within for your liquids, passport, electricals and a 16” laptop sleeve. As befitting a brand focusing on outdoor pursuits, this is a tough case built to withstand bumps and knocks. A custom-built telescopic handle and ultra-quiet Japanese Hinomoto wheels add to the luxe factor – it’s a very quiet suitcase on the move, and we like the unusual green tone that makes it easy to spot on the carousel.

Editor review: “While The Ramverk Carry-on isn’t the most lightweight carry-on case I’ve travelled with, the consequential sturdiness quashes any hesitance – should it need to go in the hold, it would certainly put up a fight against rougher bag handlers. The telescopic trolley handle comes up to a perfect height, the 16-inch laptop pocket makes it ideal for business travel, and four wheels allow me to keep it alongside me the entire time. My favourite feature is the ability to open the compartment at the front without having both sides open on the floor.” Connor Sturges, digital assistant

The best underseat cabin bag

travel carry on bag uk

Pros: Custom sizes to suit specific airline allowances, laptop sleeve, bottle pouch, multiple colour options.

Cons: Colour options are only in regards to details, suede details aren't ideal for wet weather.

Sizes: Ryanair Size: 40x20 x25cm, Wizz Air Size: 40x 30x20cm, easyJet Size: 40x36x20cm

Weight: under 0.8kg

Cabin Max truly understands the plight of bargain-hunting travellers, having created a line where each backpack meets the exact maximum carry-on size measurements for the specific airline that you’re flying. In addition, their bags feature multiple pockets (including one for a laptop and bottle), adjustable ‘packaway’ straps and air mesh padding. There’s a 3-year warranty too.

The only downside is that if you opt for a larger bag – say the easyJet size – it probably won’t fit in the baggage sizer for either Ryanair or Wizz Air. However, you could always opt for a Ryanair-sized bag to make sure you’re sorted for all options in the future. Chelsea Dickenson , founder of Cheap Holiday Expert

The best carry-on backpack

Pros: Comfortable, multiple storage pockets, laptop sleeve, great as carry on luggage or a day bag, water-resistant fabric.

Size: 53x36x19cm

Weight: 1.1kg

Australian brand Bellroy is a favourite for organised travellers – once you try their popular tech kit you’ll never want to travel without it. Their transit backpack offers up the same clever organisation tricks – compression straps to keep items in place, an external pocket that can hold a water bottle and even a lined pocket to safely store sunglasses. Many of the features are well suited to business travellers, from the laptop sleeve to the thin top compartment ideal for storing a business shirt that’s folded flat.

Editor review: “I recently travelled with Bellroy’s 28L Transit Backpack for a four-day-stay in Venice. By using the roll method I was able to fit two pairs of trousers (including jeans), a pair of slip-on shoes, two tops, a shirt, a dress, and pyjamas in the main compartment, and then my delicates in the zip-up pouch. For easy access, I popped my carry-on washbag in the external pocket. Overall, it was really easy to pack everything I needed while still feeling streamlined and comfortable to carry,” Lauren Burvill, commerce editor.

travel carry on bag uk

Stubble & Co's clever bag that allows you to ditch your suitcase entirely – it's sized perfectly to fit in the airline overhead locker while maximising on internal space. A clamshell pocket makes packing and unpacking faff-free, with no need to dig about at the bottom of the bag. There are plenty of pockets for tech and essentials, and a 16” laptop compartment for those travelling on business. You can also read our full review of this bag.

Editor review: “The Adventure Bag from British B Corp-certified bag specialists Stubble & Co has none of the drawbacks of previous bags I’ve used. It’s big enough for a long weekend, but not too big for daily use, and packed with features: the secret pocket, the padded laptop compartment, the clamshell design, and a special pocket for my frequently dirty trainers (big tick). Using it on a recent trip to Comporta, as well as on my regular overnighters in London, it never felt over-engineered or fussy, and I loved the top compartments for books and gadgets,” Toby Skinner, features director.

Pros: Separate waterproof shoe pocket, trolley sleeve, rain cover for use during wet weather hikes

Cons: A little heavier than average

Size: 55x38x24 cm

Weight: 1.7kg

travel carry on bag uk

This bag looks and feels like it means business. With a 45L capacity, it’s one of the largest travel backpacks we’ve tried, while still fitting within airline carry-on bag requirements. It can be worn as a backpack or a duffle thanks to the removable strap. There’s also a trolley sleeve for times it’s accompanying you and an additional suitcase. We’ve found that you can happily fit a week’s worth of clothes in this bag, and there are compression straps that help keep everything in place. The brand also has some matching packing cubes, sized specifically for this bag, that makes it easier to keep things tidy inside. Finally, a chest strap helps support you if you’re taking this bag on a hike.

Editor review: “I took this bag for a weekend away recently and was impressed by how much I could fit inside – it was considerably more than I could squeeze into my regular suitcase carry-on. For one-bag travel, it’s a really good bet – it’s going to be my new go-to for festival season and on long weekends away, where I need to account for multiple outfit changes in a day. One caveat: I did get caught in some heavy rain at one point and sadly the water seeped inside the bag. It makes me hesitant to pack it during winter travel – keep it for your summer holidays or invest in a waterproof rain cover, just in case,” Charley Ward, commerce writer.

Pros: Very large while still within most carrier’s carry-on size limits

Cons: Not completely watertight in heavy downpours after a certain period of time

Size: 28x18x43cm

Weight: 1kg

The best carry on tote bag

Pros: Two handle options, multiple organisational pockets, detachable drink bottle holder, laptop sleeve, luggage handle sleeve.

Cons: Main compartment has no zip.

Size: 41X30X16.5cm

It’s easy to see why this travel tote bag is a best seller and often sold out. Firstly the size – the large tote has room for 22 litres, plenty of space for packing a whole weekend’s worth of items. When testing it, I managed to comfortably fit four different packing cubes of clothes inside, as well as a wash bag. Then there’s the organisation options – a dedicated laptop sleeve, a drink bottle holder, a pocket for a phone and wallet, as well as a zip-up pocket ideal for storing a passport. There are two external pockets, one that’s hidden and secured with a magnet, as well as a sleeve to slip over a luggage handle, so it can easily sit safely on top of a suitcase. The bag is made from a light machine-washable cotton canvas and comes in natural, navy and black, as well as a small size option.

Editor's review: “I've travelled with this tote a couple of times, using it as my under-seat bag on easyJet flights. As a mum of a two-year-old it's perfect for storing all of the things you need easy access to – there's plenty of room and dedicated pockets for toys, snacks, a tablet, a water bottle. It's also large enough that it can fit a travel potty. When I'm travelling by myself, I can fit multiple outfits and a pair of shoes in very easily by using packing cubes. I have the natural colour and really love how stylish it looks too,” Lauren Burvill, commerce editor.

There are several Beis totes we love in its roster – the Large Work Tote is another great carry-on option – but its East To West bag is our top pick. It’s made from recycled plastic, has a removable cross-body strap, and is one of the brand’s larger offerings. The top zips up so nothing will spill out, which is handy regardless of whether you’re stowing it under your seat or in the overhead compartment. It comes in four colours to match your Beis suitcase, and a trolley sleeve to attach it to your case in the airport.

Pros: Laptop sleeve, mobile phone pocket, key leash, water bottle holder

Cons: Doesn’t come in as many colours as some of the other Beis totes

The best carry-on luggage for kids

travel carry on bag uk

Pros:  Range of designs, doubles as a ride, easy to clean.

Cons:  Slightly awkward to carry or pull when in a rush.

Size:  46X20X31cm

For tiny flyers, Trunki’s ride-on-luggage is one of the most popular children’s suitcases on the market. Lightweight yet built to last, the case has a storage capacity of 18 litres, allowing plenty of space for toys and books. The real highlight is the saddle design, along with horn grips for stability and a tow strap, so children can ride the case and be pulled along – a great way to kill time in the airport.

Editor's review: “We travelled with this suitcase as my two-year-old son's carry-on bag when we flew to the Maldives . He absolutely loved being pulled around the airport while riding it, which helped speed up the journey from check-in to the gate. The shape of the bag means it won't fit all large hard cover books, so stick to small or soft cover books, and I recommend storing any toys in packing cubes inside, otherwise they can fall out everywhere when the case is opened,” Lauren Burvill, commerce editor.

What size should my carry-on suitcase be?

Tediously, every airline has different size restrictions for carry-on luggage. The good news is that they’re all similar, so unless you have an especially large carry-on, your suitcase should fit in the majority of airlines’ overhead lockers. On average, look for a cabin case around 55 x 35 x 25 cm for maximum peace of mind. We’ve outlined the size restrictions for key British airlines below.

Every airline also allows passengers to bring a smaller underseat bag . These are great for keeping documents to hand, along with your water bottle and any entertainment you want to use in-flight. Utilising this bag properly can also help to keep the weight down in your carry-on, helping you avoid any additional airport fees.

With really clever packing, this underseat bag can even replace your carry-on case on shorter trips. Our commerce editor Lauren Burvill can attest to using just Antler’s Chelsea holdall on weekends away. You can also see our full guide to the best underseat flight bags .

  • Easyjet: 1 small bag, 45X36x20cm, 15kg and for an extra fee 1 large bag 56X45x25cm.

  • Etihad: 1 small bag and 1 large bag 56X36cmX23cm, 7kg.
  • RyanAir: 1 small bag, 40X20X25cm and for an extra fee 1 large bag 55X40X20cm, 10kg.
  • Singapore Airlines: 1 small bag and 1 large bag where the sum of dimensions do not exceed 115cm, 7kg.
  • Virgin Atlantic: 1 small bag and 1 large bag 56X36X23cm, 10kg.

What is the weight limit for carry-on luggage?

Again, it varies between airlines, but most carry-on weight limits are within seven to 15kg, with the majority sitting around 8kg. EasyJet has the heaviest carry-on luggage limit, at a hefty 15kg. If you tend to overpack, investing in a luggage scale can help you avoid any excess fees at check-in. Skyscanner has put together a useful matrix of weight limits for each airline here but, if you’re unsure, it’s best to check the airline’s website directly before flying.

How much should I spend on carry-on luggage?

Ultimately, this is going to come down to your own personal budget and tastes. But the majority of our best carry-on suitcases tend to sit around the £200 to £250 mark. Designer luggage, such as from the likes of Rimowa and Louis Vuitton, will cost much more. But while you can find cheaper suitcases on Amazon , our best luggage picks boast extras such as lifetime guarantees, long warranties and free repairs – as well as superior build quality and good looks. It means spending a little more at the outset is often worth it in the long run, especially for regular travellers.

How we test cabin cases.

Our experts at the GHI put every cabin bag through a series of rigorous tests to see how they fare in real-life scenarios. They weigh them when empty, then pack enough luggage for a long weekend, utilising any internal or external pockets, packing straps and dividers.

Next, they judge each case’s manoeuvrability across common terrains – including tarmac, concrete, carpet and cobbles – to check how stable they are in motion and how easy they are to pull.

They test the durability of the wheels, casing and corners by conducting a thorough drop test, and assess their water resistance by simulating rain in a shower – all this so you can head off on holiday feeling confident that your belongings will be safe and secure.

Read on to discover our top-scorers, as well as all you need to know about hand baggage allowances and the best cabin bag features to look for.

Score: 88/100

This sleek winner performed impressively on test, and thanks to its expandable design, if you like indulging in a spot of shopping on your holidays, then there’s extra room you can unlock (although, do remember, you may need to check it in as a result).

Our testers found it well made, with durable wheels and a hardy, waterproof shell and zip (it didn’t dent on test and no water seeped in). It wasn’t the lightest case, and it was a little unstable at times, especially when we changed directions sharply. However, it has all of Away’s signature finishing touches – coming with a separate washbag, a leather luggage tag and a dedicated cleaning sponge.

Key specifications

Score: 87/100

Available in a selection of vibrant colours, this case’s hard shell belied its affordable price tag and proved durable on test, withstanding rough handling. Even when our testers took it to the extreme by dropping it repeatedly, it only picked up a few scuff marks. Its sturdy wheels offer a smooth run as you dash across tarmac, too.

The only real disappointment was its zip. It moved well but let a small amount of water into the case – something to bear in mind if you get stuck in the rain. Still, this jolly bag is roomy inside and boasts three internal pockets, so you can definitely sneak in a souvenir or two.

Forget any fears of your phone running out of battery, because this nifty cabin bag comes with an accompanying charging pack that can be used in-situ or separately to suit your needs on the go. The interior is also nicely partitioned for easy packing, and the wheels glide effortlessly along.

Overall, the shell proved durable, with only a couple of knocks sustained after our continuous drop test. This sturdy design may be slightly too big for the cabin on some airlines, so if you have a favoured carrier, it's worth checking before you buy. For practicality, however, it’s hard to beat.

Moving seamlessly across every surface we tried it on, this modern spinner is an ideal city break companion. It has four double wheels for maximum portability and its handles are comfortable too.

The cabin bag’s shell was waterproof, but the zip let some water in, so be careful in the rain; given that our testers put it in the shower though, this wouldn't put us off. It fared okay in our drop test too, sustaining only a couple of dents, and we were able to wipe off any scratches with ease.

Antler has also just announced a new lifetime warranty , and the range of fresh colours makes it an eye-catching and savvy buy.

The lightest suitcase on test at just 2.3kg, this should easily carry everything you need without weighing you down. It has multiple compartments and a wet pocket, allowing you to keep your packing organised.

It didn’t sustain any damage in our durability tests and it manoeuvres well across most surfaces, bar wobbling a bit on cobbles. The design has a smart, premium feel, with leather finishes and a shiny exterior. It’s expensive, but it should last you years.

If you need a cabin bag that can also withstand the perils of the hold and the overhead lockers, consider this great value spinner. It moved smoothly and emerged from our durability tests practically unscathed – quite the feat given how much our testers bashed it about.

It felt spacious, with comfortable handles, but some water seeped through the zip at the top. That aside, it’s a reliable design, available in a swathe of cheerful colours at a reasonable price.

Every item can be neatly packed into this clever expandable suitcase. You’ll need to check that it still complies with cabin regulations before flying, but it’s ideal if you want something flexible for holidays that don’t involve plane travel.

It impressed in our waterproofing test, letting no liquid in, and its interior lining can be removed and popped into the washing machine. It suffered a few minor dents to its corners after repeated dropping, but it proved robust in every other way.

Score: 83/100

At just under £50, this lightweight suitcase is a snip. Testers found it moved around easily with sturdy wheels (they barely dropped a point in our durability tests) and a comfortable handle. Its zip-up compartment and adjustable luggage straps mean you can pack your holiday wardrobe tidily, while its shell is watertight. Its zip let some water in though, and the lock isn’t TSA-approved (so avoid if the US is top of your to-visit list).

We’d also recommend keeping it out of the hold if possible as our testers cracked it when throwing it around. Used as a wheel-on however, this wouldn’t be a worry and it comes with a five-year guarantee for added peace of mind.

Score: 82/100

Tripp’s smile-raising, brightly coloured bags are ideal for spotting on a luggage belt if you do need to check them in. Testers also said it would be easy to travel with thanks to four durable and smooth wheels, its spacious interior and a waterproof shell (note its zip wasn’t fully watertight). It has a TSA-approved lock, too.

We’d have liked a side handle for ease when putting your luggage in an overhead locker and there wasn’t much space around the top handle, but the telescopic handle pulled out seamlessly with a good adjustable range.

Score: 80/100

Like the Carl Friedrik Check-In suitcase, this is another buy that exudes luxury. It was easy to pack and moved well (with silent wheels), while its sturdy frame not only kept all water out but fared well in our drop tests too. Not to mention, the locking system keeps everything secure.

Unlike many cabin bags, this has a front pocket with a handy slot for your laptop. But weighing in at 4.3kg, it’s heavier than lots of the other cases on this list, so keep this in mind if you’ll be lifting it a lot. It’s also very expensive, so best suited to frequent travellers.

Hand luggage restrictions

best cabin bags

Confusingly, each airline has its own hand luggage restrictions, meaning one size may not fit all.

Complementary hand luggage allowances are also being tightened up, with many budget airlines limiting theirs to one bag per customer that must fit under the seat in front of you. To take more on board, you’ll have to pay.

If you’re in need of a cabin bag’s worth of luggage, and the flexibility to travel with different airlines, look for a suitcase that meets the strictest requirements. Or, if you’re a frequent flyer, choose one that adheres to the requirements of your favoured airline.

A cabin bag that measures 55 x 40 x 20 cm should suffice for most budget airlines. But for a full breakdown of size and weight restrictions, as well as whether a carry-on is included in your airfare, see our Suitcase Buying Guide .

What to look for in a cabin bag

best travel electricals

Built-in TSA lock

If you regularly fly to the USA, look for a padlock featuring the red Transport Security Administration (TSA) logo. The TSA has a master key for these locks, meaning security staff can open your bag without damaging it.

Every cabin bag listed here features a TSA-approved lock, so you can rest assured that your luggage will stay in one piece!

Cases with handles on the top and sides are easier to manoeuvre and lift. Most top handles are telescopic, extending into two or three different positions to suit your height, and retracting into the case for easier storage.

All our listed cabin bags are four-wheelers, also known as spinner suitcases. In practical terms, this means you can wheel it alongside you instead of tilting it to tow.

Two-wheeled suitcases tend to have slightly larger wheels. They can be easier to pull up and over kerbs, but we generally find spinners better balanced and more versatile.

Most cabin bags feature internal pockets to help keep your packing neat and organised. These often include small integrated pockets, removable laundry bags and larger pouches that can fit a laptop.

External pockets for stowing easily accessible items are usually only found in soft-sided suitcases.

Expandability

Though more commonly a feature of full-size suitcases , some cabin bags have expandable panels that unzip for additional packing space.

The Away Carry On Flex and the Delsey Segur 2.0 provide generous extra capacity, making it ideal if you struggle to resist those last-minute gifts and souvenirs. Just remember to check that its extended size doesn’t exceed your airline’s limit.

Aerolite 55cm Hard Shell Cabin Luggage

Best carry-on luggage you can buy today

Why you can trust T3 Our expert reviewers spend hours testing and comparing products and services so you can choose the best for you. Find out more about how we test .

The best overall carry-on option

1. tumi tegra-lite max continental expandable carry-on, reasons to buy, reasons to avoid.

Available in a sleek Graphite grey, the Tumi Tegra-Lite Max is the perfect carry-on case for a short trip away. It comes with four double wheels for stability, a telescopic aluminium handle, and is made from tough polycarbonate so should be able to clock up as many air miles as you do. The Tumi contains three zipped compartments for safely stowing all your belongings, as well as straps for keeping clothes in place. The case is secured with a zip fastening too, with TSA-compatible combination locks for security.

Unfortunately, it's heavier than the other carry-on suitcases on this list, weighing in at 4.99kg. That's by no means uncomfortable to carry around, but it's not quite as impressive as the featherlight cases we've also reviewed.

2. Samsonite Cosmolite 55cm Spinner Cabin Case

If you’re a frequent flyer, whether it is for business or please, you need to have a Samsonite. Customers who use this Samsonite are impressed with the amount of space inside, and say they are definitely worth the cost as they are built to last. Some think the handle feels a little flimsy, but with this cabin case being super lightweight, the 4 wheels make it really easy to get around the airport with no fuss.

It also has a TSA lock which is perfect for those who travel regularly, and the hard casing means your case will be protected when in the hold.

The best affordable option

3. aerolite 55cm hard shell cabin luggage.

This case from Aerolite is extremely light and extremely affordable, two things that make it very appealing. It has four wheels and a retractable trolley grip handle, which make it easy to steer in any direction. It all feels very well made, despite how affordable it really is.

The outer casing is made from durable but lightweight hard shell plastic which offers a high level of protection. The interior features packing straps and an internal zipped divider with elasticated pockets (perfect for shoes), to keep the contents in place during transit. The case includes a free three-digit combination barrel padlock for extra security, plus a five year guarantee for ultimate peace of mind.

The best premium option

Db Ramverk Pro Carry-on Luggage

4. Db Ramverk Pro Carry-on Luggage

Our expert review:

The Db Ramverk Pro Carry-on Luggage is the best suitcase for travelling professionals. It's well-made, highly functional and made from mostly recycled materials. It's a bit heavy, and the sturdiness of the bag might be OTT for some travellers; however, photographers and videographers should consider it as their next small travel case.

For all the details, see our Db Ramverk Pro Carry-on Luggage review .

The best stylish option

Eastpak Tranzshell 54cm Hand Luggage

5. Eastpak Tranzshell 54cm Hand Luggage

The Eastpak Tranzshell is available in seven different colours to suit your style. Our favourite is this distinctive Camo print (which is now sold out). It also comes in three different sizes Small, Medium and Large, although we’ve chosen the smallest model here. The Eastpak Tranzshell also promises to be tough and long-lasting with innovative foam and hybrid fabric, impressive 30-year warranty, and smooth-running wheels on its base. It also comes with a comfortable padded handle so it's easy to move around.

Inside it's just as smart, with two zipped pockets to keep your belongings in place during your travels. This case is reasonably light at 2.9kg, so for a short holiday or business trip away it’s ideal, especially given the large 32-litre capacity. It also includes a locking zip system with is TSA compatible.

The best elegant option

Ted Baker Albany 2-Wheel Business Bag

6. Ted Baker Albany 2-Wheel Business Bag

Available in black with a bright `Blue Butterfly`pattern interior, Ted Baker's stylish carry-on suitcase is a real designer piece with a distinctive, elegant look. Made from lustrous 900 denier twill material with rose gold highlights, the Albany also includes two smooth-rolling wheels in its base, plus large handbag-like handles. Inside the classy looks continue with a bright pattern, and plenty of room for your essentials.

Other goodies include a 3-digit combination lock with TSA, and contrasting saffiano envelope style front pocket. The Albany case is also available in range of other sizes – so whether you want a carry-on bag, or something larger for an extended trip away, Ted Baker has you covered.

The best convenient option

July Carry-On Pro

7. July Carry-On Pro

Apart from looking great, the July Carry-On Pro has two features that really help it to stand out from regular carry-ons. The first is the power bank that sits just under the handle and can be easily popped out for charging. It’s enough to fully charge your phone a couple of times, a perfect solution when you can't find a wall plug nearby.

The second feature is a removable laptop sleeve which is padded for protection and will fit a 15-inch MacBook with ease. The fact that it’s removable means that you can easily keep this part in your seat pocket, or take it with you to meetings when you arrive.

The case runs of four spinning wheels which are nice and smooth to push the case and appear hard-wearing. Priced at £275, it might not be the cheapest carry-on, but it has everything you need.

The best long-haul option

Victorinox Lexicon 2.0 Dual-Caster Wide-Body Carry-On

8. Victorinox Lexicon 2.0 Dual-Caster Wide-Body Carry-On

Here’s a carry-on with global importance. Although it’s technically within the 56x45x25cm limit, in practice this carry-on is – when packed (and definitely when expanded) – too wide for short-haul flights in the UK and Europe. However, long-haul routes tend to have far less restrictions (though always check before you travel).

Able to take 42 litres in an expandable main section, this hybrid case/carry-on has double-spinner wheels for maximum mobility, an adjustable handle with three different heights, and vertical X-shaped compression straps for squeezing even more inside. It’s for those that want to travel far, and travel light… ish.

The best quality option

Aerotrunk Pangolin Carry-On Luggage

9. Aerotrunk Pangolin Carry-On Luggage

This Aerotrunk carry-on is made from makrolon polycarbonate materials that are designed to make it as durable and long-lasting as possible. It also features a built-in front compartment for easy access to your travel essentials, including laptops and tablets. This makes it a great option for on-the-move professionals.

It's also fitted with an unbreakable polycarbonate shell, ultra-sturdy telescopic handle, TSA-approved lock, whisper-quiet wheels and vegan leather details. After regular use, it does noticeably cuff, especially on the darker models. However, this doesn't impact its durability at all.

The best laptop option

Samsonite Guard It Rolling Tote

10. Samsonite Guard It Rolling Tote

When travelling for business on a regular basis, carrying a laptop can be a real pain. However, this Samsonite laptop carry-on is the best way to ensure your device is protected on your flight. It offers a generous padded compartment which can accommodate laptops up to 17.3 inches, and you get an additional tablet pocket, for screens up to 10.1 inches.

This carry-on luggage only has 2 wheels for rolling, but it certainly takes the stress out of carrying an additional laptop bag on your shoulder as well as a cabin bag. You’ll still have ample space to fit in your clothing for a short trip.

How to choose the best carry-on luggage

Most airlines these days have the same rules and regulations about carry-on luggage. Common airlines at British airports, such as EasyJet and British Airways, allow you to bring on board a cabin bag with dimensions up to 56x45x25cm.

However, be sure to check with the specific airline you are travelling with, as they may vary. Read T3's guide to the most popular airline's baggage allowance: luggage limits, excess charges, and how to avoid them .

It is also important to be aware that the budget airlines including EasyJet, Ryanair and Flybe sometimes operate a one-bag policy, which means you cannot have your carry-on luggage and your handbag, as this would count as two pieces (although you can always just shove it inside your case while boarding and take it out again once seated like everyone else).

So, what’s the best carry-on luggage? That depends on what kind of traveller you are, but know that they come with 2 wheels, 4 wheels or even 8 wheels, so you barely have to make any effort to carry your bag at all. So if you struggle to pack light, at least you won’t struggle through the airport. However, a carry-on size backpack can also be a great option.

If you do plan on cramming in as much stuff as possible, opt for feather-light luggage. They can weigh as little as 2kg and will make your life a whole lot easier when you’re lifting your bag into the overhead compartment. What determines their weight is what they’re made of, but bags made of light fabrics do tend to have more built-in pockets.

When it comes to packing before you travel , there are ample options to choose from. There are duffel-style bags with removable straps as well as over-the-shoulder types that offer the perfect combination of style and ‘stuffability’ – in other words, easy access and room for pretty much everything, barring the kitchen sink.

Travellers with an abundance of tech should consider tougher builds. We’d recommend opting for cases with waxed fabric (as this will provide brilliant protection against wear and tear) and plenty of pockets (ideally ones accessible from the interior and exterior) for cables and power packs .

Adrenaline junkies and backpackers, meanwhile, are more likely to value bags with multiple interior compartments, which are a lifesaver when it comes to separating sand- or sweat-covered gear from other items. On the other hand, soft-sided bags – especially ones with exterior compression straps – can be useful when space is at a premium.

How we tested the best cabin bags.

Whether it’s for work or pleasure, we travel a lot. While we might have a few favourite luggage brands, we’re always open to experimenting with new ones. As keen scuba divers, snowboarders and mountain bikers , we demand a lot from the bags we use, and we’re also pretty good at identifying features that will come in handy – along with the ones that simply aren’t worth the extra cash.

These particular bags were put through their paces on visits to Singapore, Indonesia and Manchester, and we used them to transport everything from computers and cameras to the dive gear we needed for a visit to one of Indonesia’s most remote archipelagos.

The best cabin bags for 2024 are:

Thule aion carry on spinner

best cabin bag

  • Best : Cabin bag overall
  • Size : 35cm x 23cm x 55cm
  • Weight : 3.25kg
  • Handy pockets
  • Heavier than some other bags we tested

News flash (particularly for those who associate Thule primarily with ski boxes) – Thule does a mean sideline in cabin bags, too. The aion weighs slightly more than some of the other bags we tested, but it’s also the toughest, thanks to a polycarbonate panel at the rear and a 600-denier waxed canvas shell. For us, though, the highlight is the clamshell opening.

One side (which is also accessible via a zip on the front of the bag) comprises a shallow covered compartment, while the other features a deeper single compartment, covered not with material but compression straps attached to a removable laptop-sized sleeve. The small pocket on the exterior was great for storing smaller items such as keys, and the four oversized spinner wheels moved incredibly freely.

Vango shuttle 25

best cabin bag

  • Best : Budget cabin bag
  • Size : 59cm x 20cm x 31cm
  • Weight : 0.7kg
  • Well padded
  • Handy zippered pockets

When we left our laptop case in a hotel room in Goa, we had no concerns about keeping our exposed computer in this bag’s laptop sleeve – like the rest of the bag, it’s exceptionally well padded. The extra-large side handle meant shoving this bag into (and dragging it out of) cramped overhead luggage bins was a breeze, and the enormous main compartment means this is a great bag for weekends away, too.

Our favourite feature? The way in which the elasticated side pocket, designed to hold bottles of water, is hidden by a zippered pocket. This provided extra peace of mind and meant we didn’t have to remove said water bottle from the side pocket before placing it in the overhead locker.

Briggs & Riley domestic carry-on expandable spinner

best cabin bags

  • Best : Premium suitcase
  • Size : 56cm x 35.5cm x 23cm
  • Weight : 4.2kg
  • Innovative features
  • Extendable sidewalls for extra space

We’ve referred to suitcases as Tardis-like before, but this one really is. This cabin case’s USP is its extendable sidewalls, which can be raised (and then compressed) to provide 22 per cent more space. Other innovative features include the power pack pocket on the suitcase’s rear, the aircraft-grade aluminium telescoping handle system (trust us, this is the smoothest suitcase handle you’ll come across) and the combination of internal compression panels and a soft-touch lining – a double act that left our clothes crease-free, even after a long-haul flight to Singapore.

In a nutshell? Yes, it’s one of the pricier suitcases, but it’s also one that – in our opinion – is worth every penny.

Marks and Spencer Oslo 4 wheel hard shell cabin suitcase

best cabin bags

  • Best : Lightweight suitcase
  • Size : 55cm x 36cm x 20cm
  • Weight : 2.5kg
  • Secure locking system
  • Plenty of pockets

This is a fantastic suitcase that comes with plenty of perks, including an ultra-secure locking system and an abundance of pockets. The spinner wheels roll incredibly smoothly, thanks, partly, to their double-wheel design, and the presence of additional handles on both the bottom and side made it easy to remove from a particularly full overhead luggage bin.

The interior comprises two mesh-covered compartments, and we loved the way additional pockets have been incorporated into these mesh covers – one has enough room for a laptop, while the other is divided into two zippered pouches.

Scamp and Dude silver lightning bolt quilted overnight bag

best cabin bag

  • Best : Over-the-shoulder cabin bag
  • Size : 48cm x 19cm x 33cm
  • Weight : Unspecified
  • Reinforced base

It’s a myth that cabin bags need to be rectangular. This is an over-the-shoulder bag that also serves as the ideal cabin bag. Our testing process involved filling it to capacity and shoving it (easily) into various cramped overhead luggage bins.

Bear with us here, but this is another bag worthy of the comparison to a Tardis – somehow, Scamp and Dude has managed to squeeze in a huge main compartment, one large internal laptop pocket and two smaller pockets.

At first, we wondered if the silver was a bit much. Would people think we’d wrapped a tote bag in tin foil? Luckily, it works fabulously, thanks to the funky lightning strike design, which includes a single bolt picked out in bright pink. It’s exceptionally well padded throughout, too, and the reinforced base provides added protection from wear and tear.

The metallic version is currently sold out (you can sign up for an email notification when it returns), but the khaki colourway is still in stock (£70, Scampanddude.com ).

Samsonite magnum eco spinner

best cabin bag

  • Best : Hard-sided cabin bag
  • Size : 55cm x 40cm x 20cm
  • Weight : 2.6kg
  • Lightweight without being flimsy
  • Sustainable

This suitcase is ridiculously, mind-bogglingly light, and it lacks the worrying flimsiness we’ve come across in suitcases with a similarly low weight. The three-point TSA-compliant lock was incredibly easy to use, and it’s another suitcase with wheels that move incredibly smoothly. The two main compartments are covered by mesh sleeves, and we loved the design.

Rather than using fixed covers that zip up, Samsonite has used covers that clip into anchor points on the suitcase’s walls, and the removable nature of these covers meant we could simply unclip them when they weren’t needed. The magnum is also pretty sustainable – it’s made entirely with recycled post-consumer waste.

Tripp graphite horizon

best cabin bag

  • Best : For standing up to wear and tear
  • Size : 55cm x 39cm x 20cm
  • Weight : 2.7kg

Another suitcase that feels incredibly light but has a surprising rigidity, this graphite grey case from Tripp will stand up to some serious wear and tear. Even the wheels – supersized rollers that glide incredibly smoothly – have exterior components that protect the sides of the wheels from accidental knocks.

The internal design allows for a certain amount of customisation, thanks to the zippered cover over one side of the case and X-shaped compression straps on the other.

Patagonia black hole duffel bag, 40l

best cabin bag

  • Best : Duffel-style cabin bag
  • Size : 53.3cm x 34.8cm x 26.9cm
  • Weight : 1.17kg
  • Fair Trade Certified
  • Made from recycled materials

‘Black hole’ is an appropriate name for this duffel bag, which is Fair Trade Certified sewn and made entirely of recycled materials. The laminated ripstop fabric feels reassuringly tough, as do the reinforced side handles. It’s another bag with plenty of opportunities for customisation – the straps, for example, allow it to be carried like a backpack and are fully removable – and when the bag’s not in use, it folds neatly into its own carry sack.

The interior is easily accessible, courtesy of a three-sided zip and comprises one large central compartment and a laptop-sized pocket in the lid. A smaller side compartment, accessible from both the interior and exterior of the bag, is perfect for smaller items such as power banks and charging cables, too.

Carl Friedrik the carry on

carl friedrik.png

  • Best : Stylish cabin bag
  • Size : 37cm x 55cm x 23cm
  • Weight : 3.9kg
  • Robust outer shell
  • TSA-approved lock system

Carl Friedrik has been marrying style and functionality in its travel bags only since 2012, but it’s already grown a cult following, thanks to appearances in both Succession and The White Lotus . Just like the HBO shows, its suitcases scream “quiet luxury” and have the price tag to match.

The premium carry on case comes in three sleek colourways, boasting a robust shell and hardwearing aluminium frame that helps to make sure the case is durable and worth the investment (the brand claims its bags will last you a lifetime of journeys).

We found the carry on far easier to pack than our usual case, thanks to two sets of integrated straps and a removable compression pad, while the 360-degree wheels glided effortlessly and silently across uneven pavements and through the airport. It also felt incredibly light despite the durable shell, and there are handles on both the top and side for easy carrying. Plus, there are two integrated TSA-approved locks, rather than your typical zip, for extra security.

Eastpak travelpack

best cabin bag

  • Best : Soft-sided cabin bag
  • Size : 51cm x 33cm x 23cm
  • Weight : 1kg
  • Two roomy compartments

Is there anything this cabin bag can’t do? We suspect not. Then again, perhaps it’s hardly surprising that this offering from Eastpak – a brand famous for its backpacks – works equally well as a duffel bag or rucksack.

When carried using the side handle, the backpack straps slip neatly into their designated pocket, and the clamshell opening, which reveals two roomy, mesh-covered compartments, makes accessing the contents a breeze. We loved the presence of the bag’s side straps – these don’t only serve as compression straps but help to secure water bottles placed in the side pockets, too.

Cabin bags FAQs

What are the cabin bag allowances for different airlines.

Ryanair: 55cm x 40cm x 20cm

Jet2: 56cm x 45cm x 25cm

Wizz Air: 55cm x 40cm x 23cm

Easyjet: 56cm x 45cm x 25cm

British Airways: 56cm x 45cm x 25cm

As well as the above, passengers with these airlines can also take small personal items, such as a handbag or laptop case, on board.

The verdict: Cabin bags

Thanks to its fabulously innovative design, Thule’s aion carry on spinner bags the top spot (excuse the pun). This is one of the best cabin bags we’ve ever come across, and it’s got a sturdiness we don’t often see in soft-sided cabin cases.

Although we loved everything about Marks and Spencer’s Oslo 4 wheel hard shell cabin suitcase , it was its manoeuvrability that really sold it to us, while the Vango shuttle 25 offers a relatively affordable alternative.

Passengers put their carry-on hand luggage into the overhead lockers on a Ryanair flight

Holiday luggage: the best carry-on bags to take on board

Tales of turmoil at airports make hand baggage the route to choose – but be aware of cabin allowances

F irst it was the extra charges applied by some airlines that made travelling light appear attractive. Now, reports of horrifically long bag drop queues, lost luggage and baggage mountains have provided extra reasons to squeeze your holiday gear into a carry-on bag.

Your chance of getting to your destination with everything you need will be greatly enhanced by keeping your hands on it at all times and, depending on the airline, it will possibly save you considerable sums.

However, there are restrictions on what and how much you are allowed to bring on board the plane – and if you get it wrong, you could have a nasty shock at the airport if you find you have to check it in after all.

Buying a suitcase specifically designed as carry-on luggage, and which can be put into the overhead lockers, will help take the stress out of packing and avoid any unexpected surcharges at the airport.

The best cabin bags this summer

The consumer body Which? recently published a list of the top luggage retailers selling bags specifically designed to fit in the overhead locker on a plane.

Its survey of shoppers ranked Eastpak bags as the best, followed by John Lewis, Antler, IT Luggage, Samsonite, Cabin Max and Marks & Spencer.

Customers were asked to rate their purchases on their durability, packing space and value for money.

Eastpak Morepak bag

Guy Hobbs, the acting editor of Which? Travel, says: “There’s no need to pay over the odds for your cabin luggage this summer. Our research based on the experiences of thousands of holidaymakers found there are bargain bags that closely match their pricier rivals for quality.”

We’ve rounded up some of the best-value options from the highest-rated firms, and worked out which airlines will accept them as carry-on luggage.

John Lewis Girona 55cm suitcase

The John Lewis Girona four-wheel cabin case has 55 x 35 x 20cm dimensions, making it suitable for Jet2, British Airways and Virgin Atlantic flights.

You would also be able to take it on board if you paid extra with Ryanair, Wizz Air and easyJet .

This week it was priced at £45 and, when we looked, was sold out online but in stock in some stores.

Eastpak’s Morepack bag measures 50 x 32 x 17cm, weighs 720g and can carry 35 litres.

Its £90 price tag makes it one of the more expensive options but it can be taken on most flights.

Passengers who have paid for Ryanair or Wizz Air priority boarding or easyJet carry-on luggage will be able to use this bag on board the plane.

It also fits within BA, Jet2 and Virgin Atlantic’s free carry-on luggage requirements.

Cabin Max Anode 30L underseat cabin case

The £50 Cabin Max Anode 30 litre underseat cabin case is designed to avoid having to pay extra for baggage on easyJet flights.

It is a compact size at 45 x 36 x 20cm – matching the exact maximum dimensions allowed on board easyJet flights for free.

It also fits the requirements set by BA, Jet2 and Virgin Atlantic to take on board for free.

It is slightly too big to take on a Ryanair or Wizz Air flight free of charge, but would be acceptable if you paid for priority.

The £40 Cabin Max Lyon cabin trolley backpack comes in at 55 x 40 x 20cm, including wheels, and weighs 1.7kg.

It matches Ryanair’s maximum carry-on allowance for priority customers, and would also be allowed if you paid extra with easyJet and Wizz Air.

There would be no charge for taking it on a BA, Jet2 or Virgin Atlantic flight.

Marks & Spencer’s £45 Porto cabin suitcase is 54 x 20 x 37cm, and has a 41-litre capacity.

Again, priority customers of the three budget airlines would be able to use this bag on board, and it meets BA, Jet2 and Virgin Atlantic requirements.

IT Luggage Unicorn unicorn and stars print case

IT Luggage is an online-only retailer selling a wide range of bags suitable for cabin luggage. The World’s Lightest unicorn and stars print case is the cheapest on its website at £40. Its dimensions are 55 x 40 x 20cm, it weighs 1.8kg and carries 37 litres.

Its dimensions exactly match the allowance for Ryanair priority customers, meaning it is also suitable for all of the other airlines featured.

The Resonating cabin bag is more expensive at £70 but it also gives you more packing space, with 48 litres.

With dimensions of 54 x 36 x 25cm, it would fit on all the same flights as the cheaper model, and weighs 3kg.

Antler’s Clifton vanity case is the smallest pick of the bunch at 16 x 34 x 27cm, so would fit on Ryanair and easyJet flights for free.

The bag is also fairly expensive at £79, although the brand was highly rated by Which? customers.

It is quite tiny, with just enough space for a change of clothes and some toiletries, meaning it is probably only suitable for short trips.

Alternatively, you could take it as your smaller piece of hand luggage on BA, Jet2 and Virgin Atlantic flights, or if you pay to upgrade on easyJet, Ryanair or Wizz Air.

Cabin baggage allowances

A sign in the Ryanair check-in area

Airlines have different definitions of what counts as carry-on luggage. Ryanair customers can take on one small personal bag with the dimensions 40 x 20 x 25cm free of charge.

If you want to take a bigger bag on board, you’ll have to pay between £8 and £32 extra for priority, which allows you to travel with a 10kg wheelie suitcase up to 55 x 40 x 20cm.

Meanwhile, easyJet passengers can take a bag up to a maximum size of 45 x 36 x 20cm, including any handles or wheels, free of charge. It must fit under the seat in front of them – and can weigh up to 15kg.

Customers who want to bring a large cabin bag – up to 56 x 45 x 25cm – have to pay extra for an upfront or extra-legroom seat, or book the add-on when they buy their ticket, with prices starting at £5.99.

British Airways allows travellers to bring a handbag or laptop bag with a maximum size of 40 x 30 x 15cm for free.

Passengers are also allowed to bring a cabin bag up to 56 x 45 x 25cm, with a maximum weight of 23kg, for no extra charge.

Customers booking with Virgin Atlantic can take a 23 x 36 x 56cm cabin bag, weighing a maximum of 10kg, for free.

Jet2 passengers can take one piece of hand luggage on board free of charge, as long as it weighs no more than 10kg and is no larger than 56 x 45 x 25cm, including any wheels and handles.

They can also bring a small personal item on board – such as a handbag, laptop bag or airport purchase – as long as it will fit under the seat in front.

Wizz Air allows passengers to bring a 40 x 30 x 20cm bag on board for free but customers who upgrade to priority – for an extra charge starting at about £4 – can take a 55 x 40 x 23cm case. Wheels aren’t included in the dimensions but they must not add more than 5cm on to the size of the bag.

A superior carry-on handle

We focused on rethinking the critically important but often neglected telescopic handle, custom-designing every part from the ground up – from our rocksteady high-grade aluminum tubes to our sleek, ergonomic handle with the release button cleverly hidden underneath.

It’s all in the details

The integrated TSA-approved lock and aerospace-grade polycarbonate shell keep your belongings secure and protected, while the colour-coordinated gaskets and reverse coil YKK zippers ensure your Monos luggage is always smartly dressed, with places to go.

Thoughtfully designed interior

A zipped panel on one half of the suitcase keeps your shoes and other items tucked away, while a compression pad and ballistic nylon straps keep your clothing compact on the other half. And generously sized, thoughtfully placed pockets maximize every inch of storage, meaning you can get more out of every trip with your carry-on.

Customer reviews Carry-On

For some background, I was in the market for a new suitcase as my old Samsonite roller was falling apart. I couldnt ignore the presence of Away on social media, so I decided to purchase their suitcase. Shortly after, I saw ads for Monos and decided to purchase it as well to compare the two as they both had 100 day return policies (caveat: I believe Monos only takes unused suitcases for return, but I didnt return it so I cant confirm). I will mention that the Away came in week, while the Monos came in 2 weeks, and I live in Manhattan, NY.

TLDR: Lets be real - these suitcases look extremely similar. Quality- and design-wise, Monos knocks it out of the park at every point of comparison.

Im aware that Monos has a list of differences vs Away that they will send upon request, which might be worth asking for if youre on the fence. I did not ask for such a list, I havent seen what they have to say, and I made my own having directly compared the two when they arrived:

- Handles: the Monos handle is noticeably sturdier, and the suitcase seems better balanced - the Away suitcase body shakes when I jiggle the handle, while the Monos body stays still. Night and day quality difference here.

- Shell: I immediately noticed how thin the Away was - comparing the two side by side, the Monos is much thicker and sturdier while the Away felt like a childs toy.

- Zipper: the Monos zipper is sturdy and flush, while the Away zipper is recessed and feels flimsy; given Aways design…

Our team wants to take this time to express how appreciative we are about your thorough and thoughtful comparison on our luggage. We are so extremely happy to see that you are satisfied with your Monos case and thank you so much for your honesty! Please feel free to DM us at anytime :)

I had been researching luggage for over a year when I came across Monos. I was so close to getting the other known brand but dove deep into the story behind Monos and what they bring to the table. After going through articles, reviews, YouTube videos, employee comments and their production factory; this company blew the other one Away. I felt investing in luggage with Monos was going to be worth the cost and walk away with a superior luggage.

I finally decided on the ones I wanted; carry-on (regular) in colours Ocean Blue & Olive Green. I ended up purchasing a complete set with Monos compression cubes & Metro backpacks (see other reviews for more info). I ordered back in December and revived them at the end of January. I was so giddy with excitement opening up the products and they did not disappoint.

The luggage itself; gorgeous with complete functionality. The exact measurements came in a tad under what is stated, which is to be expected If it’s to fit in any overhead luggage compartment on any plane. Looks closer to 21.5 x 8.75 x 14.5 and weights empty at 6.5 lbs (with no shoe bags, luggage tag, etc). Weighs 8.5 lbs with 4 compression cubes (empty), luggage tag, laundry bag, and 2 shoe bags (all empty). The inside antibacterial material is smooth like butter, feels amazing to the touch.

The compression pad itself I was so happy to feel that it’s not entirely a pad material! To strengthen itself for compression, the outer rim of the compression pad feels like it has…

This review had to be shared with our entire team! Thank you for sharing your full experience.

I love the feel of this product. It feels very sturdy yet not stiff. The inside lining is a very nice and durable, easily cleaning material. This is what I could fit in it on my trip:

Laundry bag

Curling wand

Down jacket

Hand mirror

6 pairs of socks

2 Sports bras

2 pajama shorts

2 sweat pants

5 long sleeves/sweaters

1 pair of jeans

6 tank tops.

I waited to review the carry-on until I finally used it. First of all, the suitcase is absolutely beautiful inside and out. It definitely fits in more than you think and it rolls perfectly even over the airport carpets. Customer service has also been top notch throughout the buying process.

On the downside, the handle will not come up if you overstuff the suitcase even a little bit. I really wish the compression pad was removable because of the way the straps are placed they will press your clothes towards the middle of the suitcase instead of evenly spreading them, which puts pressure on the handle.

I was tired of carrying an over the shoulder bag and was looking to upgrade. My business trips are short so I wanted something I could always carry on. And would fit my walking shoes, heals, and running shoes. This bag did not disappoint. I was also able to drop my laptop in the middle easily once through security.

Most planes I fly on are smaller so I was worried about it fitting in the cabin. When it did not fit in the overhead bin, it did fit under the seat.

The 14 best luggage brands, explained by GQ's globetrotting travel editors

By Owen Gough and Heidi Quill

14 Best luggage brands 2024 explained by GQ's travel editors

From nervous, infrequent flyers to veteran business people hardened by dozens of hops on the red-eye, there’s one constant that remains the same with holidaymakers and travellers: the need to invest in a quality suitcase . The sight of passengers hoisting barely held-together tote bags over their shoulders for a long-haul journey gives us the sweats, so we’ve made it our duty to ensure that anyone taking a trip in the next few months is equipped with the best luggage brands that guarantee a smooth experience – at least when it comes to packing and lugging the thing around the airport.

And look, it’s not like you’re unaware of what's available right now. Trip-friendly bags from the likes of Antler , Carl Friedrik , Globe Trotter and Samsonite are as ubiquitous in any airport as an ill-advised early-morning pint before boarding, but sometimes you just need a nudge in the right direction to find the truly elite options. Our editors have put in the groundwork so you don’t have to, arriving at the absolute best luggage brands that will deck out your travels with the best suitcases, carry-on , luggage tags , passport holders and accessories. Whether you're travelling to New York or New Delhi, read on to check out our top picks.

Which suitcase is better, hard or soft?

The choice between hard-side luggage or soft-sided suitcases will largely hinge on whether you’re checking it in on the plane or carrying it on with you. Hard-sided suitcases offer greater durability to cope with dings, scrapes and knocks that will inevitably happen in transit, keeping your neatly-packed clothes secure and protected throughout the journey. The problem is these checked bags are typically heavier which can cause a few headaches when you go to check it in or place it in the overhead bin, so keep that in mind.

Soft cases are easier to lug around and are lighter, but miss out on the protective functionality of hard-shell options. In this regard, they're a greater prospect for hold-all luggage or if you’re hopping on trains and buses, as you can squash them down if space is tight over long trips. The carry-on variety of luggage is easier and often cheaper, but worth only worth considering for shorter journeys. it's also worth considering these will certainly not be water-resistant, so keep that in your thoughts when planning a trip to rainier climes - or literally anywhere in the north-west of Europe.

Regardless of the solidity of your case, we’ll always recommend grabbing a wheeled suitcase, because no one wants to arrive at the gate for their summer holidays drenched in sweat and nursing a dead arm. Wheeled luggage has got significantly better in recent years, with telescopic handles and whisper-quiet, 360-degree spinner wheels for supreme manoeuvrability from check-in to your plane seat.

There are standout backpacks or shoulder bags that bring the sartorial chops you're likely hunting for while also offering additional storage space for your travels. These are typically best used on short trips or as carry-on luggage to save your muscles during a long journey, but most can be bought and used in tandem with your chosen suitcase to house an in-flight book, snacks, a work laptop and one of our favourite travel pillows to save yourself a crook neck upon arrival.

How do I choose a suitcase?

Selecting which checked luggage to go for can be as tricky as deciding where you're planning to holiday in the first place, so it's worth brushing up on the best options to help inform your choice. There's a fair amount of complication that makes this difficult, with different airlines imposing a variety of weight and size limitations, as well as the obvious sartorial and space aspects that make up a solid set of luggage.

Therefore, we'll give you the boring answer and say that it largely depends on what kind of travel you're doing in the immediate future. Larger trunks and suitcases will inevitably be your best bet for getting around the world on longer, more luxurious trips, with enough space to hold all the clothes and items you might need for a week or longer.

Short city trips or weekend getaways will be the domain of smaller carry-on luggage , with wheels and handles to help you glide around train stations and airports stress-free. These might not have the capacious skills to keep you dressed for longer periods of time, but they often have enough to stretch to a week maximum should you need it.

Travel backpacks , soft-sided luggage and rucksacks are a solid option for very short weekend trips or overnight stays, as they aren't particularly roomy for all your gear but are easier to carry over shorter distances. They can also be a good accoutrement to carry-on luggage, as you can split your load between the two bags and get more in your trip.

To make your packing stresses a little less intense, we also recommend picking up some packing cubes to use as a divider for your clothes. These little bags are a life saver for organising your suitcase into easily manageable chunks, using a compression system to squash all your items down for more space inside your suitcase. For example, pack all T-shirts in one bag, underwear in another, and maybe a smaller one for toiletries, and then once you're at the end of your trip, keep the used clothes separate from the clean clothes so you know what to chuck into the washing machine when you get back.

What size should by carry-on luggage be?

Frustratingly, not all airlines can agree on a set size and weight for your carry-on luggage, which can provoke headaches if you're prone to travelling with multiple companies or taking on a few flights in one trip with several layovers. However, there are some hard and fast truths to your carry-on limits. As a general rule of thumb, suitcases should not be taller than 24 inches, wider than 16 inches or deeper than 10 inches. This is your standard ballpark figure, and you won't find a single airline that allows beyond this limit.

It's worth noting this if your carry-on luggage is expandable – which many are – allowing you to extend your internal space to fit in those last-minute flip-flop additions. Using this feature may push your carry-on luggage over the edge, which will incur fees for additional space, you've been warned. As always, you should do your due diligence and check with the airline before you fly and then measure your own luggage to ensure it's within size and weight limits for the smoothest possible journey through check-in.

How much should I spend on my luggage?

Holidays don't come cheap, so you're probably not wanting to spend a small fortune on luggage, too. However, there are some common truths about picking up your travel gear and how much you should spend; namely, “don't scrimp and save if you don't want future headaches with faulty gear”. Going cheap will inevitably mean materials won't be up to scratch, and you may risk getting it through your journey in one piece, which tends to lead you to buying replacement bags anyway – so why not think of it as an investment piece?

£80 is usually the entry point to decent luggage, and it's worth being mindful about that cost usually being per bag or suitcase. Great options from Amazon Basics or Samsonite can land you in this price point and afford you a decent build quality to get you through a few years of travel.

Stepping up between £200 and £500 is the next price point, where you'll find proven quality and luxurious materials. Brands like Antler, DB and Carl Friedrik are lurking around this cost, and such suitcases should easily see you through several years of jet-setting if you're kind to them.

Anything beyond £800 is a real statement piece in the airport lounge; think Gucci, Louis Vuitton and the like. If you genuinely care about your aesthetics, over caring about wether your handsome gear picks up a few knocks and scratches in transit, then these brands will do you proud.

Antler Bamburgh duffel bag

British-made Antler holds a loving place in our hearts simply because its collection is capacious, hardy and worthy of a spot on our Instagram grid as we jet away for the summer. The Clifton set is one of the best-selling luggage options for a good reason: they are luxurious, durable and spacious enough for two weeks of travelling, all for a mid-tier price. If you can, we’d highly recommend picking up the packing cubes. We swear by these useful mini bags to keep underwear, T-shirts and socks stored neatly and crease-free on long-haulers or they can be used as a handy laundry bag to be kept separate from your clean clothes.

For shorter trips, we’ll point you in the direction of the Bamburgh duffel, a rugged, multipurpose shoulder bag that sports a shower-proof design, padlock-compatible zips and plenty of internal pockets to store passports, wallets and other essentials for easy access.

Monos Metro Duffel

Sometimes premium products don't need to come at premium price tags, which is just fine by us – more cocktails at the pool bar, please. Monos scratches that exact itch with high-end luggage for jet-setting luxury without breaking the bank. And don't they just look gorgeous.

For short-haul trips, we'd recommend the Carry-On Pro Plus, a suitcase wrought from a polycarbonate shell that's nigh-on indestructible, with TSA-approved locks to keep your clothes safe and secure in transit , as well as a front pocket large enough to fit a laptop. The same thoughtful design carries on through the range with the Metro Duffel, housing enough space for weekend getaways to the coast in style.

Samsonite Lite-Shock - Spinner XL 81cm suitcase

Easily one of the most well-established luggage brands in the world, Samsonite is well-known for producing high-quality luggage options for frequent travellers. Offering TSA-approved locks and expandable storage at an affordable price point, it has become synonymous with aspirational jet-setting since the early 20th century.

Samsonite has a huge catalogue of top-spec luggage for you to peruse, but one of our favourites is the Lite-Shock Spinner. The polycarbonate chassis is expandable but tough against scuffs and marks, making it a veteran of the airport carousel. The lightweight design makes it a great choice for frequent flyers who regularly make short one-week getaways or business trips.

Herschel Outfitter Wheelie

You know Herschel Supply for its bags already, just perhaps not its luggage. You’ve no doubt seen its logo on duffle bags and backpacks a million times over, but it’s exceptional suitcases that this Canadian brand should also be known for. Exceedingly tough, scratch resistant (even on non-black shades) and light, its hardshell models are handsome holiday buddies that come in at a more affordable price than many competitors, but with just the same reliability.

Carefully sectioned split zipped interiors, in-built locks and silent 360 degree wheels, we reckon Herschel’s suitcases have everything you’re looking for — and they have a lifetime warranty to boot.

Carl Friedrik Compact Weekender bag

If there’s anything Dickie Greenleaf taught us, it’s that luxury luggage set made of plush Italian leather goes a long way to elevating the overall style points of your holidaymaking. Sitting at the high-end of fashionable travel bags, London-based Carl Friedrik delivers sophistication to your luggage that simply cannot be ignored. In case you’re curious about CF’s sartorial credentials, its suitcases and briefcases have been featured in TV shows like White Lotus and HBO’s Succession, and those guys definitely know how to basque in the elegance of luxury travel.

Our hand to pick of these elegant bags? It has to be the Scuderia AlphaTauri carry-on suitcase, a set destined for the Monaco F1 grid. Its svelt design belies the sturdy hard-shell chassis, enhanced with a strip of premium Italian leather detailing. This case has the quiet confidence of a championship winner.

DB Ramverk tech organiser bag

There really isn’t much the Scandis can’t succeed in when they put their mind to it. DB is a hypey new brand hailing from the snowy climbs of Norway, innovating to make travelling heavy a lot more manageable. The noteworthy aspect here is that DB's collection is sustainably sourced and made to last, with durable designs that proffer a rugged chic coveted by backpackers and gap-year travellers.

We love that the Hugger bundle utilises a hook system where the larger pack piggybacks the smaller pack for an ergonomic lift that will make the long walk through the airport as slippery as a freshly-brushed piste in winter. Elsewhere, the Hugger Backpack on its own is a mighty travelling bag, with a huge cavern for your gear that’s well-protected thanks to the hybrid soft/hard-shell chassis and ribcage system that manages to look striking and deliver the sturdy goods where you need them. Packing space comes at a premium, so we'd also recommend grabbing the tech organiser bag to store cameras, phone chargers or other paraphernalia for a smooth trip.

Louis Vuitton Monogram rolling trunk

Is there any more clear-cut statement of luxury than Louis Vuitton travel gear? We think not. Providing that first-class feel regardless of whether you're in economy or business, Louis Vuitton's selection of logomaniac luggage never fails to look every bit the main character as you ought to feel pre- and post-vacation.

Choosing a particular LV bag is like deciding between a Ferrari and a Lamborghini – without dissimilar price tags –, but we came down on the side of the ultra-luxe Horizon 55 suitcase. Dappled in your choice of either the iconic ‘Damier checkerboard design or the Vuitton Monogram, this particular number is the only true sartorial choice you need to make to turn heads at the departure gate. Perfect to take in the cabin, the 37-litre capacity is more than enough to house your must-have travel essentials, and it also comes with a removable leather name tag for the ultimate travel flex.

If it's good enough for the likes of Harry Potter, Indiana Jones and almost every fancy fictional detective ever written since the late 1800s, it's more than good enough for us. The classic trunk has never looked as good as it does from Globe Trotter, an iconic British brand well-versed in crafting the perfect suitcase to accompany you across the planet in style.

Spend any time perusing Globe Trotter's website and you'll instantly fall in love with the fun, pastel-coloured take on the world's most famous luggage, courtesy of the Golf le Fleur collaboration. Seen here with a playful multi-coloured array of leather straps and buckles doubled up with an abstract leopard-print lining and ivory casing, it screams Wes Anderson's summer getaway must-have item.

Gucci Interlocking G cabin suitcase

If ever there was a master of the anachronistic, it would be Alessandro Michelle's era for Gucci, a theme that is deeply felt within the brand's luggage offerings. Where heritage prints and old-school silhouettes combine with innovative materials and modern durability, Gucci luggage simply cannot go wrong.

For the frequent flyer, we'd suggest the extra-hardy Porter cabin trolley suitcase, where its dense aluminium construction is accented with delicate panels of the ever-infamous ‘Double G’ logo print. For a more retro, aesthetic-focused take, however, the Savoy Ophidia-inspired trolley bag and Interlocking G patterned travel bag make stylish travel partners indeed.

From the plain jet black pick to the logomaniac Symbole patterned number, the handful of suitcases we've selected from Prada's online shelves cater to the needs of departure lounge wallflowers to Insta-focused travellers alike. Whatever your airport aesthetic, we've got you covered.

Rimowa Original Check-In L

travel carry on bag uk

Rimowa Essential Sleeve Cabin Plus

One of the most imperious luggage makers in the game, Rimowa has been cruising to sunnier climes since 1898, and really hit its stride a century ago by creating the world's first aluminium suitcase way back in 1930. Although it's also moved into polycarbonate wares of late, the Cologne-based brand has seen its status elevated via several hypey collaborations with the likes of Supreme, Off-White and Anti Social Social Club. In other words, it's followed exactly the new luxury same playbook as its LMVH stablemates in Fendi, Givenchy and, of course, Louis Vuitton.

There's no better place to start with Rimowa than its Original Check-In suitcase, if only because it's one of the most desirable pieces of luggage in existence. For those in need of something a little more understated, its Essential Cabin and Essential Sleeve Cabin Plus (with an external laptop sleeve, naturally) are both as sturdy as they are suave.

travel carry on bag uk

Tumi 'International' carry-on suitcase

travel carry on bag uk

In what might be the most bizarre origin story for a company name, Tumi's moniker comes from a type of Peruvian ceremonial knife used in the sacrifices of ancient South American rituals. Every day's a school day, right? In modern times, it's become a world-class luxe luggage brand beloved by pan-European flight hoppers and high-end holidaymakers alike.

Tumi's 19 Degree Aluminum carry-on suitcase is the style-centric luggage pick that ensures turned heads at baggage claim. Famous hands that have grasped the handle include Renee Rapp and Tottenham Hotspur's Son Heung-min. The immediate appeal is obvious: a vibrant, silver-hued, smart case that's set apart from its competition by its sturdy, streamlined silhouette and rippled outer shell.

Crash Baggage 79cm suitcase

travel carry on bag uk

Crash Baggage Share 55cm cabin suitcase

travel carry on bag uk

So-called because, well, its suitcases look like they've had a crash, a bang, and a wallop, Crash Baggage is founded on the belief that your luggage should be as durable as possible. Subverting shoppers' expectations of what brand-new luggage should look like, Crash's line-up comes pre-worn and dented in a tongue-in-cheek expression of just how resilient its cases are.

For your consideration, dear reader, we've picked out the Stripe 79cm, the Share 55cm and the Icon 79cm. Each decked out in dents and scratches, these cases are bold enough in both colourway and battle scars to be spotted whirling around baggage claim in no time. Plus, with all those aesthetic injuries, you're surely not to be messed with in the oft-competitive dash through arrivals.

The fashion-forward travel brand from Down Under, Nere's luggage will match any mood on your mind or adventure on your calendar.

Nere's most iconic suitcase, the Stori, makes the perfect travel companion for quick flights and long car rides alike. Defined by the range's bold colour scheme, the Stori might be easy on the eyes, but it's its ABS hard shell and multi-faceted storage features mean that it's just as kind on your travel essentials. If you tend to overpack for trips or like to have extra luggage space for souvenirs and shopping hauls you’ve picked up along the way, expandable luggage might be just the thing. These carry-ons, checked suitcases, and weekender bags unzip to extend the depth by a couple of inches and increase the overall capacity.

We tested hundreds of luggage pieces, a decent portion of which are expandable, to see which are actually worth buying. Each suitcase and bag was tested in our New York City lab and used on multiple trips for at least six months. We pull year-round insights from luggage tests and evaluate each piece based on capacity, organization, maneuverability, durability, and overall value.

Away's Carry-on Flex suitcase is conveniently compact, easily fitting into an airplane overhead bin, and you can unzip it to expand the depth by two and a quarter inches. We fit everything on our packing list without a fuss and had room to spare. Inside are two main compartments: a mesh one with zippered closure and the other with a compression panel and straps, plus a zippered pouch. All zippers run smoothly without snagging. The suitcase is also easy to open and close (even when stuffed full) and lift overhead, thanks to the lightweight design.

We found the Carry-on Flex a breeze to maneuver. The handle worked well, the weight felt evenly distributed, and it rolled effortlessly over carpet, hard floor, and tile. This suitcase also proved durable. Nothing broke when we shoved it off a counter and whacked it with a baseball bat. It did sustain a few scuffs, though, so you might want to choose a darker color to conceal them better.

Considering the high-quality design, compact yet spacious capacity, smooth-gliding spinner wheels, and organizational features, we think the price is fair.

Best Lightweight

Delsey paris hardside expandable luggage with spinner wheels.

  • Design 5 /5
  • Maneuverability 4 /5
  • Durability 4.7 /5

At 5.3 pounds, this carry-on is easy to lift and compact while still fitting a substantial amount of clothes.

It may be prone to dents, and the expander only adds two centimeters to the depth.

Carry-ons can range from about four to 13 pounds. At just over five pounds, the Delsey Clavel Spinner is the best lightweight option we tested. While this hardside spinner suitcase looks pretty small, it can hold a significant amount of clothes even without expanding it. The expander feature adds two centimeters to the depth. This is a little less than most (which are typically about two inches), but the extra space can go a long way.

This carry-on has a sturdy thermoplastic shell that, for the most part, held up well during our tests. However, swinging a bat at it did cause minor dents. The Clavel maneuvers nicely on different surfaces, even over bumps and cracks, but we wish the handle was a bit longer.

In the end, we think the price is warranted and would recommend this suitcase to those looking for a compact, easy-to-lift carry-on for a short getaway .

Best Checked

Béis large check-in roller.

  • Maneuverability 5 /5
  • Durability 4.5 /5

This suitcase has lots of organizational features, an enormous capacity, and an expander that adds two inches of depth.

Though it's generally durable, the exterior may develop scuffs.

With a whopping 112-liter capacity, this Béis suitcase is among the biggest we tested. We had enough room to fit twice the stuff on our packing list — and this is without the expander feature that gives you an extra two inches of depth. Besides an enormous capacity, the Large Check-in Roller has zippered compartments, ample internal pockets, a removable compression panel, compression straps, and a laundry bag for dirty clothes.

This checked suitcase is also surprisingly lightweight for how massive it is. After packing it full, we could grab it from a baggage carousel and lift it into a car trunk without a struggle. What's more, the cushioned handle and 360-degree spinner wheels make pushing and pulling very comfortable. Although this bag didn't sustain any scratches or dents from our durability tests, it does scuff easily. That said, superficial marks can be wiped off with a damp cloth as needed, and the darker colors will conceal them better than the lighter hues.

Considering the enormous size and organizational features, we think the price is warranted.

The Details: 31.3 x 19.6 x 12.6 inches (unexpanded), 31.3 x 19.6 x 14.6 inches (expanded) | 11.5 pounds | 112 liters | Polycarbonate

Best Carry-on

Samsonite freeform carry-on spinner.

  • Durability 5 /5

This impressive carry-on has a generous capacity, a durable shell, and smooth-gliding spinner wheels.

It doesn't have a removable bag or designated section for dirty clothes.

Of all the carry-on luggage we tested, Samsonite's Freeform Spinner is our favorite. This thoughtfully designed suitcase has two separate compartments and several interior pockets, plus it expands to add two inches to the depth. We fit enough outfits, shoes, outerwear, and toiletries for a four-day trip without having to use the expander. It would be nice if there was a removable laundry bag or separate section for dirty clothes, but we were otherwise satisfied with the organizational features.

This carry-on maneuvers easily on two or four wheels, rolling smoothly over carpet, hard floors, and concrete. We also appreciate that the telescoping handle extends and locks with the press of a button. Hitting it with a bat and shoving it off a table left virtually no damage. And after using this bag regularly for six months, there were no signs of wear and tear. Beyond that, we love the chic, minimalist aesthetic of the Freeform, which comes in a handful of neutral colors and statement hues.

Considering the durable construction, generous capacity, and reasonable price tag, we think this suitcase is an excellent choice for frequent fliers looking for a high-quality carry-on.

Travelpro Hardside Luggage Set

  • Capacity 4.9 /5
  • Design 4.5 /5
  • Value 4.8 /5

These expandable suitcases are remarkably spacious, durable, easy to maneuver, and backed by a lifetime warranty.

You may not save money by buying the suitcases as a set rather than individually.

Travelpro's Platinum Elite luggage line is among the best we tested. This two-piece bundle comes with a hardside checked bag and a matching carry-on, each with spacious capacities that expand by two inches. (If you need more luggage, you can add the Medium Check-in Spinner or the Compact Carry-on .) We fit all items on our list with room to spare and appreciated how the zippered panels, cross straps, and various pockets helped with packing.

The suitcases showed a few superficial marks after being whacked with a bat and shoved off a counter, but there were no dents or scratches. When packed full, we thought the carry-on was a little easier to maneuver on two wheels than four, but other than that, the Platinum Elite collection rolls like a champ.

Just a heads up, purchasing the suitcases as a set may not be more affordable than buying them separately. We still think the price is reasonable, especially considering the lifetime warranty.

The Details: 23 x 14.5 x 9.5 inches (carry-on unexpanded), 23 x 14.5 x 11.5 inches (carry-on expanded), 30 x 18 x 13.5 inches (checked unexpanded), 30 x 18 x 15.5 inches (checked expanded) | 8.1 pounds (carry-on), 12.3 pounds (checked) | 45 liters (carry-on), 108 liters (checked) | Polycarbonate

Best Splurge

Tumi alpha medium trip expandable 4 wheeled packing case.

The high-end, exceptionally durable, and incredibly spacious design expands by more than two inches and has exterior pockets that extend outward.

It's relatively heavy when empty.

The Tumi Alpha Packing Case is undoubtedly worth the price tag. We found the medium checked size spacious, without being too large or awkward to handle. Everything on our packing list fit into just one of the compartments, and the zippered expander adds two and a half inches of depth. There are also multiple front pockets that extend outward, allowing you to fit even more stuff and easily access items when the main compartments are full. The zippers seemed to be very high-quality too.

At 17.6 pounds, this suitcase is relatively heavy when empty, but we didn't find it hard to lift compared to lighter bags. The handle locked confidently, and the 360-degree caster wheels rolled smoothly and turned on a dime. It was ever-so-slightly more cumbersome on carpet, though we wouldn't say it was difficult to maneuver at all. The quality of the Alpha Packing Case is undeniable. It showed resistance to wear and tear during our durability test and is backed by a five-year warranty.

If you're willing to invest in an upscale design and want a suitcase big enough for two people's belongings or to fit purchases from your trips, this suitcase is a stellar choice.

The Details: 29 x 20 x 13 inches (unexpanded), 29 x 20 x 15.5 inches (expanded) | 17.6 pounds | 108 liters | Ballistic nylon

Best Budget

Swisstech softside luggage.

This sizable checked bag has lots of organizational features, including various interior and exterior pockets, and it rolls smoothly on all surfaces.

It's not the most stylish but stands out for practicality.

On a budget? We recommend the SwissTech Executive Upright Suitcase. This large checked bag is notably spacious, with a zippered compartment, compression straps, multiple pockets inside and out, and a removable pouch to keep your things organized. Unzipping the expander adds two inches of extra depth and a lot more packing space.

This suitcase is durable, sustaining almost no visible damage from our bat test. There was just one small smudge on the exterior, which wiped off. It rolled smoothly over carpets and hard flooring and even did pretty well when we pulled it over gravel. The simple, softside design isn't the most fashion-forward — but we wouldn't hesitate to bring it on a trip.

If you're looking for an affordable suitcase with an expander and practical features, you really can't go wrong.

The Details: 29 x 19 x 10.5 inches (unexpanded), 29 x 19 x 12.5 inches (expanded) | 9.1 pounds | 1,680-denier textile

Best Softside

Briggs & riley expandable spinner.

Briggs & Riley

The suitcase feels all-around well made, from the dent-proof exterior to the easy-gliding wheels and sturdy handle.

We wish the built-in garment bag was more intuitive.

The Briggs & Riley Baseline Expandable Spinner is made of soft yet sturdy ballistic nylon that looks sleek without compromising durability. With impact-resistant corners, it withstood several bat hits and falls from a table. The textile exterior was also easy to wipe clean. We love this suitcase's self-repairing YKK zippers, which actually get smoother over time. Not only that, but the sturdy aluminum handle makes it a piece of cake to maneuver over smooth and bumpy surfaces.

We appreciate the interior and exterior pockets and expandable main compartment. The only real drawback is that the built-in folding garment bag isn't very intuitive. Still, we like that this feature stays tucked away if you choose not to use it.

If you can swing the price, you might consider investing in this well-made, luxury piece of luggage — and the lifetime guarantee can give you peace of mind about your purchase.

The Details: 26 x 18 x 12 inches (unexpanded) | 13.3 pounds | 80 liters (unexpanded), 97 liters (expanded) | Ballistic nylon

Best Weekender

Longchamp le pliage expandable travel bag.

  • Portability 5 /5

The Le Pliage Bag is lightweight and comfortable to carry, with a seemingly never-ending capacity.

It doesn't have many organizational features.

Longchamp's Le Pliage Travel Bag is the best expandable weekender we tested. With a seemingly never-ending capacity, this carrier effortlessly fit everything on our four-day packing list with room to spare. The expander is easy to use — just unzip the middle to increase the size by more than half. We also like how lightweight it is: less than two pounds when empty.

This bag's biggest downside is the lack of organizational features. It has two small interior pockets big enough for things like a phone, passport, AirPods, or lip balm, but that's it. Depending on your travel plans, you might want to use packing cubes. What makes up for it is the fact that the Le Pliage is made of smooth, durable canvas that repels stains and wipes clean as needed. You can carry it with the two grab handles or the adjustable shoulder strap, which we found comfortable.

Seeing as Longchamp bags last for years and stand up to wear and tear, we think the price tag is warranted.

The Details: 17.7 x 13.8 x 9.1 inches (unexpanded) | 1.6 pounds | 30 liters (unexpanded), 50 liters (expanded) | Recycled polyamide canvas

Travel + Leisure / Jessica Juliao

The Travel + Leisure team has tested hundreds of luggage pieces both in our New York City lab and in real-life settings, including a wide range of expandable carry-ons, checked bags, weekenders, and underseat bags. We created an airplane set in the lab to simulate the travel experience. Our comprehensive tests include hitting the luggage with a baseball bat, shoving it off a table, packing it with enough belongings for a trip based on the size, pushing and pulling over different flooring materials and terrains, lifting into a makeshift overhead bin, and placing smaller ones under a seat.

Each piece of luggage was evaluated based on capacity (with and without the expanders), organization, maneuverability, durability, and overall value. Those with the highest scores are featured here.

Tips for Buying Expandable Luggage

Pay attention to the materials.

Luggage can have a hard shell (often made of polycarbonate or aluminum) or a textile exterior, such as ripstop or ballistic nylon. Hardside suitcases can prevent your belongings from getting crushed, but the softside variety can be more flexible and easy to zip closed when packed to the brim. Both are generally easy to wipe clean, though hard shells can be more prone to scuffs.

Besides the exterior material, pay attention to the zippers. They should be strong, smooth, and reliable, especially with an expandable suitcase that unzips to increase the depth.

Check your airline's carry-on size requirements

Carry-on rules and requirements vary, so check your airline's size limit before your trip. The cap for overhead bins on many domestic flights is 24 x 16 x 10 inches, but some airlines are more strict and may set the limit to 22 x 14 x 9 inches. For international flights, carry-ons usually can't be taller/longer than 21 inches.

With this in mind, some carry-on suitcases won't fit when expanded. You may need to check your bag both ways or potentially just on your return flight if you use the expander to fit souvenirs from your trip.

Consider your airline's checked bag policy

While an expandable suitcase will allow you to fit more stuff, you'll want to be conscious of the weight. Filling it to the brim will not only make it heavier and potentially harder to maneuver but also may exceed the airline's weight limit for checked luggage. In many cases, you'll have to pay extra (on top of the standard checked baggage fee) if you go over 50 pounds.

If you're willing to pay the additional fee, the limit may be 80 to 100 pounds. Also, the maximum size for checked bags is often 60 linear inches (meaning the total length, width, and depth). But again, this varies among airlines, so check the rules before heading to the airport.

Unzipping the expander typically adds two inches to the depth of a suitcase, but it can be slightly more or less. While this may not seem like much, it means you can fit another two-inch layer of clothes into the main compartment — potentially more, depending on the material and if there are any compression features.

Expandable hardside suitcases have rigid, crush-resistant exteriors that help protect what's inside (and potentially prevent wrinkles ). They're usually easy to wipe clean, though lighter colors can show more scuffs. Softside luggage, on the other hand, is sometimes lighter-weight and often just as durable. Additionally, a textile suitcase can be easier to zip closed when packed full, which can be good for overpackers . Both can be great options, so it really comes down to personal preference.

Traveling Light: How to Pack a Carry-on

An illustration depicts the back of a person with curly dark hair and headphones wearing a backpack that is transparent. The items inside -- sneakers, clothing, separate small bags containing things like glasses, toothpaste, medications -- are all neatly arranged. The person is standing in a windowed corridor, and, in one corner of the illustration, a plane can be seen rising in the sky.

By Stephanie Rosenbloom

For some travelers, the mere thought of packing a carry-on bag can sour even the most potent vacation anticipation . But packing light can also be a creative endeavor that helps build excitement for your upcoming getaway. And with fees for checked bags on the rise, it makes economic sense to master the art of packing a carry-on. Here are some tips on how to save space — and your sanity.

Get in the minimalist mind-set

If you tend to over-pack, begin by thinking about why you’re traveling in the first place. Doing so may help you focus on the many sights, sounds, scents and tastes you’re about to experience instead of the many outfits you’re unable to cram into your bag.

“It’s all about the mind-set,” said Pauline Frommer, co-president of the Frommer’s Guidebooks and Frommers.com , who has not checked a bag in more than 20 years. “When you’re traveling,” she explained, “it’s more about you seeing the world than the world seeing you.”

Pack colors that coordinate so you can bring fewer items yet still have options, like re-wearing the same pants with various shirts. Darker colors mean a stain won’t render something unwearable. And invest in some technical clothing. Such pieces keep you warm without being bulky, are easy to move in, have pockets for necessities like glasses and cellphones, and resist water as well as odors so they can be worn more than once. Many outdoor apparel brands ( Patagonia and Arc’teryx , to name a couple) make clothes that are great for hiking yet sleek enough to dress up when the sun goes down. Just pack some eye-catching accessories.

“I tend to maybe throw in a necklace,” Ms. Frommer said, which she wears on top of her day clothing “to make it look more dressy.”

Choose your bag

There is no perfect carry-on for everyone. To determine the bag that’s best for you, ask yourself how you’ll be using it. Will you be carrying it long distances, through subway turnstiles and city streets? Or will you typically be rolling off a plane and into a car? Bags with wheels tend to be less taxing on your body, though if you’ll be taking public transportation or flights of stairs, a backpack or lightweight duffel can keep you hands-free and may make for smoother transitions. Also consider the things you’ll be bringing. Structured, harder luggage is often best for keeping dress clothes wrinkle-free and organizing unwieldy items like high heels. That said, a soft duffel bag without wheels has a better chance of being able to squish into an overhead bin.

Nerissa Settie, who, as the butler executive at Raffles Doha in Qatar trains the butler team and oversees day-to-day operations, wrote in an email that “each option offers a different benefit,” with duffel bags providing more depth, and wheeled bags providing more compartments and less strain on your shoulders. If you opt for the latter, buy a bag with four wheels, Ms. Settie advised, which is easier to maneuver along an aircraft aisle.

Whatever bag you choose, know the rules. Carry-on bag dimensions vary by airline, so be sure to check your specific airline’s size and weight requirements, including those of any connecting carriers.

Also pay attention to your route and fare class, which can affect the number of bags you’re allowed to carry on, as well as their weight. And remember: While your bag may comply with the carry-on policy, that doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll be allowed to bring it on. For instance, if you’re in a low boarding group, you’re more likely to have to gate-check your bag. With that in mind, keep essential items like medicines in a small bag that can easily fit under the seat in front of you. If you’re unsure about whether you’re allowed to pack a particular item, check out the government websites for the places you plan to travel through, such as the Transportation Security Administration’s What Can I Bring? page and the European Commission’s Information for Air Travellers page.

Know when to fold ‘em

When it comes to packing your clothes, the question is: Should you fold them flat or roll them? Ms. Settie recommends rolling because it uses less space and results in fewer creases. That’s easy enough with T-shirts, but what about a suit jacket? The butlers at Raffles Doha use a technique that involves turning one shoulder of the jacket inside-out and then tucking the opposite shoulder inside it, aligning the sleeves and then folding the jacket in half while inside-out, which minimizes wrinkling and helps protect the outer layer of the jacket (Ms. Settie shared instructions here ). Or simply wear your blazer onto the plane, something Ms. Settie suggests because jackets and jeans take up a lot of space and weigh more. Besides, she said, doing so gives you “the added benefit of traveling in style.”

As you place items in your bag, think about balance. Put heavier items, like shoes, at the bottom (near the wheels, if your bag has them). Ms. Frommer said she typically packs two pairs and stashes things such as socks and jewelry in them.

Clothing should go toward the top of your bag to reduce creases created from weight, with jackets going in last, Ms. Settie said. You can also add a layer of protection from wrinkles by putting skirts and blouses in plastic dry cleaning bags before folding them flat and then placing them at the top of your bag.

Borrow and buy

A bit of research ahead of time can free up a lot of room. Call your hotel or vacation rental to find out if items like hair dryers and sunscreen are provided so you don’t have to pack your own, and ask if they have washing machines or offer cleaning at reasonable prices.

And don’t worry about packing for every possible eventuality. Buying practical things while you’re away can be great fun. It’s an opportunity to talk with locals, try regional products (like the affordable beauty elixirs found in Parisian pharmacies) and, of course, bring a few treasures home, thanks to all that room that’s left in your bag.

From long-haul flights to hour-long trips, having your travel essentials (think: snacks, books and headphones) right at your feet is a major convenience. Beyond that, your onboard personal item can even hold a few days’ worth of clothes, potentially eliminating your need for a carry-on. The best underseat luggage easily slides into tight spaces, while still fitting all of the demands of modern air travel. What To Consider When Selecting Underseat Luggage

There are a few key factors you should keep in mind when picking an underseat bag. Below, we’ve broken down each one to better inform your purchasing decision.

The biggest factor when considering underseat luggage is size. If the bag doesn’t fit underneath the seat, then you’ll be asked to place it above you in the overhead bin. It’s also important to make sure you don’t push the outer limits of the dimension maximums, since you also need a place to rest your feet. In our experience, it’s better to give up 2 to 3 inches of space so you don’t end up more crammed in the seat than you already are.

It’s almost a sure bet that your underseat bag will get stained, kicked around and generally pushed into the framing of the seat in front of you, so it’s crucial that it can stand up to all of that wear. Hardshell bags fare a bit better, but soft-sided bags and backpacks can move more to give your feet a bit more space. In either case, you want to find a strong nylon, polyester or leather bag that can bend, flex and fold to the demands of commercial air travel.

Additional Features

When comparing different pieces of underseat luggage, consider which features are most important to you. For those who frequently go on trips for work, a bag with a built-in laptop compartment will prove useful. Meanwhile, those who hate carrying bags on their shoulders will benefit from one with rolling wheels. If you’re traveling with additional luggage, look for a bag with a trolley sleeve—this design feature allows you to slip your bag over the handle of your wheeled suitcase.

What Is The Best Size For Underseat Luggage?

Every domestic airline has a different standard for underseat carry-on sizing. To give a good example of the range you should expect to find on your flights, American Airlines has a dimension maximum of 18 inches long, 14 inches wide and 8 inches high, while United Airlines has underseat dimensions of 17 inches long, 10 inches wide and 9 inches high.

These dimensions (and associated weight limits) are subject to regular change, so it’s critical to check with your airline before you head to the airport. Of course, international airlines will have a whole other set of dimensions and regulations to consider for underseat bags. Roomy first-class seats may have a few extra inches to spare, and the main cabin middle seat might have more room than its neighbors.

Is An Underseat Bag The Same As A Carry-On Bag?

While both carry-ons and underseat bags accompany you aboard the airplane, they fall into two separate categories of luggage. Underseat luggage is typically classified as your “personal item,” which is expected to fit underneath the seat in front of you. Carry-on luggage is larger in size and stored in the overhead bin for the duration of your flight. All U.S. airlines allow for one personal item per passenger free of charge, but some require an extra fee for carry-on bags.

'Light' Amazon carry-on that 'fits perfectly on Ryanair' now slashed to under £20

The online retailer is offering a limited time deal on this Cabin Max Bag that is said to be "deceiving" for the amount of space it contains.

Every traveller will know that a trip to the airport before your vacation can often turn into a costly affair.

From shopping to eating, there are many ways that can make you feel as though you need to spend quite a bit before you get on the plane. Another hidden cost can be with your baggage, as it can cost you extra if it does not meet the requirements set by your airline.

Those who travel with Ryanair will already know that the minimum baggage allowance is quite strict. Which is why we were delighted to spot this Cabin Max Ryanair Cabin Bag on Amazon that has been specifically designed for the airline - and it is now on offer.

The online retail giant currently has a limited time deal on this "light" carry-on that has reduced it from £22.95 to £19.51 - 15 percent off the RRP. Measuring a compact 40x20x25 and weighing just 500g, it perfectly meets the minimum allowance for a personal bag on Ryanair flights.

It's not the only airline it is suitable for, as it is also under the requirements set by British Airways, Jet2, easyJet, Tui and Virgin. There's also a spectrum of 22 different colours and patterns to choose from.

With a large suitcase-style opening that is said to boast 20l worth of space , many travellers say they have used this cabin bag for trips "up to ten days long". There's also side compression straps that will let you pack a bit more, just in case you need more space.

The bag itself has been crafted from a durable 600D polyester material, meaning it should withstand any wear and tear over time. It also comes complete with a front pocket and organisational sections that let you stash any travel essentials including a laptop, wallet and travel documents.

You also don't have to worry about the Cabin Max Ryan Air Bag being uncomfortable, as it has been designed with extensive padding on the backpack straps, top carry handle and on the back. It can also fit over your suitcase handle, just in case you do find it that bit heavier to carry all the way through the airport .

Boasting an impressive 4.5 rating on Amazon based on over 17,000 five-star reviews, this limited deal on the Cabin Max Ryan Air Cabin Bag might be one that you don't want to miss, especially as shoppers say the amount of space it contains is "deceiving" at first.

Homewares deal of the week

As the weather begins to warm up, there may be a few of us who struggle to fall asleep during the hotter evenings.

If that sounds like you, then you'll be pleased to hear that Dunelm is running a massive Easter sale across thousands of products. This includes a "weightless" summer duvet that will be an essential for hot sleepers.

The high street retailer's Fogarty Anti-Allergy Summer Duvet boasts a 4.5 tog which has been recommended by experts for the warmer season. Previously priced between £15-£27, it has been dropped to £12-£21.60 , depending on your bed size - saving shoppers 20 percent.

Available in sizes from a single to a super king size, this lightweight duvet has been designed with a soft microfibre cover to help keep you comfy in bed. Meanwhile, the polyester hollowfibre filling is said to be "like sleeping on a cloud", according to reviews.

It's not just ideal for keeping you nice and cool during the summer, as the duvet also boasts an anti-allergy treatment that makes it perfect for any hay fever sufferers. It's also machine washable for extra convenience.

With an impressive 4.8 rating on the home retailer's website, shoppers say that this 4.5 Tog Summer Duvet from Dunelm is "perfect for spring/summer" and has helped to make sleeping a "delight."

One rave review read: "Weightless but still cosy!! Perfect for purpose, thrilled really great value for money."

Dunelm shoppers can find the Fogarty Anti-Allergy 4.5 Tog Summer Duvet priced between £12-£21.60 in the Easter sale here .

One happy shopper wrote: "I was aware of Cabin Max , as I have their Palermo Cabin bag, so was happy to see they offer a bag under the seat option. This is a great bag. I trialled it on a one night trip, then used it on a three night away trip. Enough space to carry everything I needed. I would say I could see myself using this on a four or even five night trip, if I knew I was going to get consistent weather. But definitely a great bag option, it is strong but light and plenty of room, and segments for my needs. No problems using on Ryanair and easily fitted under the seat."

A second praised: "Took this on a Ryanair flight. Fitted under the seat perfectly. Was able to organise the bag well with all the different pockets. Look forward to using it again!"

A third positive review read: "Well the bag is perfectly sized for flying Ryanair. It looks very small when you first get it but believe me its deceiving. I couldn't believe how much I fit in it. Of course I use a 'military roll' technique for packing to fit more in but I managed to get enough in there for my 9 day trip to Malta. It held up very well and still looks and works the same as the day I got it. Going again in September and will be using again no problems."

And another wrote: "The bag fits under an airline seat and meets the specific requirements for Ryanair. I packed enough clothes for a 10 day break and it was comfortable to carry."

Some shoppers have taken issue with the design of the wheels, as one low rated review read: "This bag wobbles from wheel to wheel and falls over. It's not fit for purpose and Cabin Max are refusing a refund. Great idea but badly executed."

Shoppers can purchase the 15 percent off limited time deal on the Cabin Max Ryan Air Cabin Bag on Amazon here .

Hand luggage restrictions at UK airports

There are restrictions on what items you can take in your hand luggage and hold luggage when boarding a plane in the UK.

There are different rules if you’re taking goods to sell or temporarily abroad for business reasons , for example sales samples, professional equipment or musical instruments for a performance.

Airport security staff will not let anything through that they consider dangerous - even if it’s normally allowed in hand luggage.

Hand luggage allowances

Check with your airline how many and what size bags you can take on the plane with you.

Check the rules for electronic items and devices you’re allowed to take on a flight before you travel - there are different rules depending on which country you are travelling to or from.

Taking liquids through security

There are restrictions on the amount of liquids you can take in your hand luggage. If possible, pack liquids in your hold baggage (luggage that you check in).

Liquids include:

  • all drinks, including water
  • liquid or semi-liquid foods, for example soup, jam, honey and syrups
  • cosmetics and toiletries, including creams, lotions, oils, perfumes, mascara and lip gloss
  • sprays, including shaving foam, hairspray and spray deodorants
  • pastes, including toothpaste
  • gels, including hair and shower gel
  • contact lens solution
  • any other solutions and items of similar consistency

If you do take liquids in your hand luggage:

  • containers must hold no more than 100ml
  • containers must be in a single, transparent, resealable plastic bag, which holds no more than a litre and measures approximately 20cm x 20cm
  • contents must fit comfortably inside the bag so it can be sealed
  • the bag must not be knotted or tied at the top
  • you’re limited to 1 plastic bag per person
  • you must show the bag at the airport security point

Liquids in containers larger than 100ml generally cannot go through security even if the container is only part full. There are some exemptions.

You can take liquid containers larger than 100ml through security if they:

  • are for essential medical purposes
  • are for special dietary requirements
  • contain baby food or baby milk

You can also take liquids bought at an airport or on a plane (such as duty free) through security if:

  • the items are sealed inside a security bag when you buy them
  • the receipt for the items is sealed in the security bag and visible

You must not open the security bag until you reach your final destination. Airport staff may need to open the items to screen the liquid at the security point.

Liquid restrictions outside the EU

Countries outside the EU might have different rules on carrying liquids as a transit or transfer passenger. You should check these rules with the relevant airlines and airports before travelling.

You can only carry 1 lighter on board. You should put it inside a resealable plastic bag (like the ones used for liquids), which you must keep on you throughout the flight. You cannot:

  • put it in your hold luggage
  • put it in your hand luggage after screening

Food and powders

Food items and powders in your hand luggage can obstruct images on x-ray machines. Your bags may need to be checked again manually by security. You can put these items in your hold luggage to minimise delays.

I will fight for overhead space on a plane, but I shouldn't have to | Cruising Altitude

travel carry on bag uk

I’ll admit it. I will elbow you out of the way to get on the plane 30 seconds sooner and secure overhead bin space. I’m not proud of it, but I'll probably never see you again, and I really don’t want to have to check a bag on most flights.

I’m part of the problem, but I’m not alone. The bag wars just keep heating up.

“We travel a couple times a year, about four times a year, and we’re noticing that we don’t have any overhead space for our bags. When people are getting on the plane, they’re taking the first (space) available,” Elaine DiCresce, a retiree from Minneapolis, told me. “The last few times, we actually checked our bags at the gate. It’s just frustrating.”

So how did we get here? Why is overhead bin space at such a premium, and what can be done about it? Here’s what I learned.

Who sets carry-on bag rules?

Most flights have a 1 + 1 rule: one carry-on bag that goes in the overhead bin and one personal item that fits under the seat in front in economy and on most domestic flights. But these guidelines are flexible and not set in stone.

“The airlines make the rules,” Loulu Lima, founder of the Texas-based travel agency Book Here Give Here , told me. “This is real simple, and every airline has a different rule.”

That is to say, there’s no overarching regulation about what carry-on bags have to be, just that most airlines use similar equipment and set standards more or less the same way.

“Sometimes you’ll hear an agent blame the FAA, but that’s not true,” said Brett Snyder, author of the blog Cranky Flier and owner of the travel agency Cranky Concierge.

But whenever you fly, it’s a good idea to check the details of your carry-on allowance.

Lima said each airline has slightly different dimensions for allowable carry-on bags, and different tickets have different rules. Some basic economy tickets might not allow for overhead bin baggage, and ultra-low-cost carriers like Spirit and Frontier may charge an extra fee for carry-on bags.

What are the best ways to secure overhead bin space?

Unfortunately, there’s no great strategy here. The best way to access a bin on most airlines is to be in an early boarding group, which usually means having a more premium ticket, having frequent flyer status with the airline, holding the right credit card, or paying for access.

“I hate to say it, but sometimes I would join a credit card that gets you earlier boarding or buy that early boarding space. It really depends on the airline," Lima said.

How can overhead bin space be less competitive?

First, a brief detour to look at why bin space is so sought-after in the first place:

“We initially got there when checked bags were still free, but people were primarily concerned that their checked bag would be lost,” Snyder said. “When (airlines) started charging for checked bags, then it became even more important for people, because people don’t want to pay for it.”

Lima agreed that passengers mistrusting airlines is a big part of why so many passengers rely solely on carry-ons on their trips.

“We’ve all become control freaks to a certain extent,” she said. “There’s no trust that the bag is actually going to make it. Why do you think the AirTags and the Tiles and all of these other things are so popular these days?”

Airlines are aware that access to bins is competitive and frequently tout improvements that mean more space for rollaboards. In fact, just on Tuesday, United Airlines announced it was installing larger bins on its Embraer E175 regional jets, operated by Skywest. Regional jets, which typically fly short routes, are notoriously tight on carry-on space.

Beyond physical improvements to overhead bins, airlines can’t do much to help with the competition, though.

Snyder said airlines can encourage or require passengers to gate-check their bags but acknowledged that sometimes backfires, especially if they start forcing checks before the overhead bins are full.

And, of course, airlines can charge for overhead bin access, which is unpopular with passengers, but it does smooth things along at the boarding door.

“You have airlines like Spirit and Frontier, they charge you more to carry-on than to check a bag,” Snyder said. “You don’t see the same kind of mad dash that you see on other airlines to get on board just so you can claim your bin space.”

Yet, the efficacy of such practices is somewhat limited.

For DiCresce and her husband, Clifford, they’re left wondering why airlines don’t assign slots in the overhead bin like seats, and to be honest, I think it’s a fair question to which I don’t have an answer.

Expert packing tips

Until new innovations or some sort of sorcery make overhead bin space unlimited, we’re stuck duking it out with fellow passengers for whatever we can get.

Lima said that she usually travels with carry-on bags only and that you can minimize the space you need by being strategic about how and what you pack.

“I’ve gone to China and to Finland for three weeks and I’ve had different temperature changes,” she said. “I’m all about rolling and, as a plus-sized woman, my clothes are bigger than most, so if I can do it, everyone else can do it, too.”

For Snyder, the best way to avoid the stress is to just determine not to rely on the bins at all.

“When you travel without a carry-on bag, it is remarkably freeing. You, all of a sudden, don’t care when you board if you have an assigned seat,” he said.

And I’ve seen for myself that the checked-bag system is increasingly reliable. I’ll still fight you for that overhead bin space for now, but I may be coming around to Snyder’s view.
