Buffet breakdown: Which cruise lines have self-serve buffets, and which ones don't?

It's time to pick up the tongs. Nearly a year since big-ship cruising restarted for U.S. passengers, a few things have changed with regard to onboard protocols — capacity is increasing , social distancing is practically nonexistent and masks are optional . But perhaps none of the changes is as disturbing to me as the return of self-service buffets, with six of the industry's eight major lines allowing passengers to, once again, serve themselves.

Don't get me wrong, I love a good buffet setup. What I don't love, however, is the blatant disregard of buffet etiquette by some passengers. I've seen people sneeze and then touch the communal serving utensils without washing up or — worse — simply forgo said utensils and grab food with their bare hands . Gross!

That's why I was so excited when, as an initial COVID-19 precaution, several cruise lines decided to make their buffets crew-served. Sure, it takes additional staff, and it can be annoying when someone else is in charge of your portions. But it's more sanitary — since some viruses (though not COVID-19) spread via contaminated surfaces — and it also helps to control waste. You can always go back for seconds (or thirds or fourths) if you want more.

But now that protocols are being relaxed, several lines have reverted to self-service. Others never offered a different option in the first place. Here, I'll run down a list of brands that have the serving spoons on the passengers' side of the sneeze guards, as well as the ones that are still holding out.

Carnival Cruise Line

Unlike several other cruise lines, Carnival 's buffets were always of the self-serve variety , even immediately after the line's July 2021 post-shutdown restart. Passengers on all Carnival vessels are able to serve themselves in the onboard buffets.

"Because the crew are all vaccinated, and because 95% of guests are [vaccinated] as well, and after all the professional advice we have taken, the buffets … are going to be exactly as they were, meaning you will serve yourself," Carnival brand ambassador John Heald said of the decision in a June 2021 Facebook post.

Celebrity Cruises

Along with sister brand Royal Caribbean, Celebrity was one of the first lines to say it would temporarily scrap self-service buffets. But the move might not be so temporary after all.

"For the foreseeable future, our buffets will be crew-served and not self-serve," the line told The Points Guy.

Disney Cruise Line

When Disney first brought its ships back into service, it employed crew-served buffets to help minimize the risk of germ spread. Effective April 1, 2022, its vessels' buffets are back to being self-serve.

Holland America Line

Because of its slightly older clientele, Holland America has always been cautious when it comes to buffets. Even before "coronavirus" became a household word, cruise lines had to contend with norovirus.

HAL ships switched to crew-served buffets several years prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, partially in an effort to combat potential outbreaks of norovirus, which is easily spread via contaminated surfaces. The line continues to employ the practice on all of its vessels.

"We made the switch to align with premium [cruising] and our goals for service," a representative from the line told TPG.

MSC Cruises

The first mainstream cruise line to restart operations with Mediterranean voyages in December of 2021, MSC Cruises initially began sailings with crew-served buffets. Effective April 1, 2022, it is back to allowing passengers to serve themselves.

Norwegian Cruise Line

Norwegian has been one of the most stringent cruise lines in terms of COVID-19 precautions. In the beginning, it was the first — and one of the only — lines to require full vaccination for all passengers, as well as crew members. That has since been relaxed.

As part of NCL's initial return to service, the line had the crew serve cruisers at its buffets, but it has since reverted to self-serve.

Princess Cruises

Princess ' cruise ships currently allow for self-service, with passengers able to pick up their own plates and utensils and scoop their own fare in most areas at the onboard buffets. Some stations are still served by crew members, however.

Royal Caribbean International

As one of the trailblazers in the crew-served buffet arena, Royal Caribbean required passengers to ask the crew for what they wanted when the line's sailings first returned in 2021. Starting April 2, 2022, the brand brought back self-service and issued the following statement:

"Royal Caribbean International will bring back self-service dining in ... the Windjammer Marketplace, Solarium Bistro and at private destinations. Grab-and-go dishes and single-serving portions will continue as a permanent offering."

Princess Cruises is introducing an on-demand service that allows guests to call a crew member to provide in-person assistance anywhere onboard its MedallionClass ships.

CrewCall will be available on stateroom TVs and the MedallionClass app, leveraging the OceanMedallion wearable device to guide the crew member to the guest’s exact location. Additionally, a CrewCall Chat feature will let guests use a smart device to text a specific question or request that will be answered virtually by crew. 

“CrewCall significantly expands our MedallionClass service-on-demand capabilities allowing us to deliver high-touch, personalised service that doesn’t interrupt the vacation they are enjoying to find a crew member,” said Jan Swartz, president of Princess Cruises. “It minimises wait time at our guest services desk while simultaneously improving our responsiveness.”

Both CrewCall features will expand Princess’s OceanNow digital experience, allowing guests to order food, drinks and retail items for delivery to their location.

“Every minute a guest has to stand in line to wait for service or to have a simple question answered diminishes the value of their vacation,” said John Padgett, chief experience and innovation officer at Carnival Corporation. “OceanNow with CrewCall really delivers on the MedallionClass ‘service now’ philosophy and maximises the vacation value for all Princess guests by responding in the moment to their wants, needs, and desires without any inconvenience.”

CrewCall will be part of a new range of TrulyTouchless features that will be available to guests when Princess returns to sailing, starting with Majestic Princess in Alaska on 25 July. She will be followed by Regal Princess and Sky Princess sailing UK ‘Seacations’ from 31 July.

A month ago, food on the Majestic was fine... Food on the Island right now is... Questionable. I wouldn't say it's BAD (I haven't gotten sick, and I can get it down), but there are definitely preparation decisions that make me wonder.

This seems to vary...some ships are reporting the buffet is back to full self serve...folks on the Caribbean are saying this.

I found the food ok, very much standard princess menu /fish /meat ,portions are smaller I've noticed but ask for another dish if you like a choice of torn between 2 things on the menu it won't be a problem ....plenty of English bacon traditional breakfast at the buffet and more other choices fruits cereals ect, you won't be hungry ...serving to you which can be a bit unorganised but you will work it out just point at what you want  buffet situation is fluid so you might get to help yourself...I didn't do a speciality this time ...but heard of people not getting in ...I also think it could be length of cruise as we only did the 5 days so everyone wanted a booking ...if you can eat early you may get that booking ..

Ok..there’s usually hot dogs 🌭 and pizza on the pool deck..usually goes down and stays down pretty well with beverages of choice!  Oh and the French fries 🍟 !  Have never not found anything that does not work well for us! 😁

Just off of Royal Princess and the buffet was entirely self-serve. Was sadly disappointed by the pizza in Alfredo's. We ate there twice and were completely underwhelmed both times. The pizza wasn't even warm all over. It seemed like they had pre-cooked the crust and then just spread some sauce and toppings on it and heated it slightly. I get much better pizza at home from Papa Murphy's take and bake.

Good to hear that self service is making a return. 

Gigi's (Alfredo's on the Enchanted) was OK but they've changes the recipes for items we normally get & they just weren't the same.

I just read this on another social media site:  Someone on the Ruby Princess said the buffet was back to self-service. Can people who are currently on cruises confirm or clarify if not true?  Thanks. 

I know people are saying that lines are getting much longer now that ships are sailing with more people.

I just got off of the Majestic today. That isn’t the case. You were for most items. The only items you could self serve were things like ceviche in a cup, smoothies at breakfast and maybe a couple of items already in a dish. I only ate at World Market buffet in the morning. It’s quite hectic and not organized very well.

It is not self service on the Sky as of 3/12.

Sorry to hear buffet back to self-serve on the Ruby, as we're sailing on her in May and we actually liked the idea of items served by crew.   Personally never cared for the chaos of all self-serve.  Would rather be in a line and have thing more organized....and less confusing.  Not to mention less chance of food contamination.

To each his own.  Guess I'll spend less time in the buffet and more in the IC.

Thanks everyone for responding. I appreciate it. Maybe the Ruby is just testing it. Maybe they were really short on staff and needed to do something. I guess we will wait and see what happens.

In all honesty, it was a bit of a PITA with the crew serving.  Granted, we only ate at the buffet for breakfast and the breakfast service was quite lacking overall.  That is/was my only complaint about my cruise.  There were numerous times I had to get the attention of the crew behind the stations to get served.  It seemed they were too busy talking amongst themselves. And the beverage service for breakfast was nearly non-existent.

If not for that, my time on the ship would have probably been nearly 100% perfect.

Are you currently on Enchantment?  Have they opened all 3 dining rooms?  How many pax on board?

Have heard some people call the already prepared servings on individual dishes/bowls which they pick up themselves "Self Serve".  Not the traditional self serve as one plate go around from station to station spoon/ladle out your own serving amounts.  Without context - could be that's what the person meant and the old way isn't actually back.

We had the same experience on the Regal in Nov the few times we had buffet breakfast. 

We usually order room service breakfast. Hope that hasn't been stopped!

I'm currently on the Grand to Hawaii, and we've only been to the buffet for breakfast.  Cold items were already portioned into bowls, cups, plates, etc. that you could pick up yourself.  All hot items were served by the staff.

Currently on the emerald. Only self service was a collection of premade items. Passengers aren't even able to grab their own utensil bundles. The buffet is a little bit of a madhouse honestly. Each server follows a passenger up and down the buffet until done. Still, it works.

Self service was not back on Regal last week.  It didn't bother me much but sure would like to be able to get my own drinks if I want to.

About 2,500 on board. 

I'm not sure if all 3 DR are yet open.

Will check today.

I haven’t been back on a cruise yet. Personally, I’m concerned about long lines. The cruise I have booked for later this year is almost full. I’ve read that some are on cruises with 3000 people now. It seems to me that a self-serve buffet worked fine on half full ships, but how will it be on almost full ships? 

I eat the majority of my meals in the buffet. Pre-covid, I mostly ate a big fresh salad every day, sometimes twice a day. That really doesn’t seem possible now. I think I’ll miss it. I cruised on HAL a few times and hated their buffet. By the time I waited in different lines to get hot food, bread, salad, etc. it would all be cold by the time I sat down to eat.

My wife doesn't really like any buffet while I do, so it's a battle of wills on where we get breakfast or lunch.  She usually wins on dinner though.  I just can't wait to see and try the larger buffet on the Discovery, as I am so used to those tiny ones on the Grand class ships.

Ate at the buffet several times across all three meals.   You can certainly still get a salad, they make them  in smaller bowls but I expect you could ask for a plate for larger salad. The server will add any ingredients you want and as much as you want.  Lines were not long, I didnt feel it was any more or  less chaotic than before with people going in all directions . I did find it difficult to get drink refills,  though. 

Self-serve makes more sense on the Ruby because it's the old-style cattle-pen setup, where you're funneled into an enclosed area. Waiting to be served there makes the area more congested, and with crew congregated in a small space, actually increases covid risk. I've started bringing along my own plastic tray, so I can fill it with grab-and-go items and plates of food, as well as a quick breakfast at the International Cafe, so I'm not going back frequently to pick up more items, which is annoying and again increases Covid risk. I also sit in areas of the buffet where few people are, including outside, so I can fetch my own drinks, since we all know, but Princess can't yet understand, that serving spoons and glasses don't spread Covid. Other than desserts, I've also found nothing that matches Alfredo's in the buffet. Maybe when ships build up occupancy, they might go back to themed nights and be able to keep food warm and fresh, to give people a reason to visit there, but on all my Princess cruises it's been the weakest part of the dining experience for me.

You’re right about the buffet design on the Ruby versus newer ships. It’s been awhile since I’ve been on that size ship. Certainly something to think about. My booked cruise is on a newer ship, but I was thinking of booking the Ruby or Sapphire this summer. Thanks.

The lines aren't any longer but waiting for someone to come over and serve you can take a little extra time.  I'm used to just serving myself quickly and sitting down. 

I'm sure the crew will be happy when it comes to an end. 

The buffet seems to be as popular as ever. 

As a side note, they keep most things  covered up until they serve it. You have to read the little signs and decide if you want something. it just makes it harder to determine what you want. 

I think this is just the way the Enchanted is doing it.
