Mission Trips

If you’ve ever been on a mission trip before, you probably described it as either “unforgettable” or “life-changing.” The Salvation Army values opportunity to serve others in contexts different to our own.

Though mission trips can happen in our own communities every day, The Salvation Army’s four territories provide additional opportunities every summer to serve as part of a mission team either within the states or abroad. These mission trips are available to young people who consider The Salvation Army their church home. Check out these exciting opportunities:

Summer Mission Team (SMT), is a unique discipleship program for young adults that combines cross-cultural partnership and practical ministry to help broaden the global view of the participants. As team members serve in new contexts at home and abroad, God works in their hearts to expand their knowledge and empathy for others. The result is young adults who return home and step out in new confidence for the Lord and His kingdom through their studies, jobs, home corps(church), and for many, as officers (pastors). SMT is truly life changing! centralmissions.org – Chris Shay

Summer missions means growth—growth personally and growth corporately. When we expand our horizons, move out of the familiar and take a leap with God into the unknown, we go through transformation. This transformation can be spiritual and emotional through the growing of our trust in the Lord and through the strengthening of the leadership qualities that the Lord has placed in us. When we travel to a location outside of what is familiar, we may be helping a local community, but even more so we are helping ourselves: we grow by experiencing people, cultures and experiences that challenge our narrow views of the world and realize that God is so much bigger than race, religion, culture, background, or history. When we are changed for the better, we can be agents of growth in the familiar world we return to. BoothYouth.com – Rachael Boynton

Mission trips expand your perspective about the world, yourself and about God. Mission trips help us realize that there is something bigger than our own personal needs and helps us recognize the practical lessons of loving people who are culturally and spiritually different from us. Mission trips have had a significant impact on my life personally. Three things have stood out to me the most: – Vulnerability in Christ is freedom – Do more than handout things—be intentional! – Take Action—make a change  (for example: use less plastic, turn off the lights, pour back into your community, let go of your pride etc.) When I stepped outside of my own world I was able to see deeper into God’s eyes YouthDownSouth.org – Jovanie Smith

18-28 who are eager to engage in sacrificial Christian

service. Service Corps is focused on building relationships in communities that The Salvation Army serves through intentional service and evangelism. Teams have the opportunity to serve and evangelize alongside The Salvation Army in national and international locations.

This often includes leading worship services, day camps for youth, teaching music, sports ministry, creative arts, open-air evangelism, community discipleship, and even building projects during the course of the mission trip.

Service Corps is a life-changing experience where members are challenged spiritually in their stewardship and service to God, as well as learning to adapt to new cultures and living environments.

Coming to Papua New Guinea is life-changing, you’ll never be the same.  Your visit will create many memories for yourself as well as impact others.  Please contact The Salvation Army Headquarters +675 325 5542 if you are interested in bringing a Mission Team to Papua New Guinea.

The Salvation Army God’s Sports Arena church in Brisbane travelled to Port Moresby in October last year.  Read this account of their visit.

What I loved about the God's Sports Arena Mission Team were they were willing to use their different abilities and God-given talents to serve others.   It was a lot like the loaves and fishes story.   Each member doing what they could and God performing miracles.

Kathy is very good at craft so she held craft sessions with  women and girls during the afternoon.  They made bracelets from recycled paper.   This was also taught to other leaders of Junior Miss Groups. (Junior Miss is held once a week for girls 13 to 21 years.  They come together to  learn skills, enjoy  friendship and Bible explore the Bible.)

Bill has a First Aid business - so he used his skill to teach First Aid.  The attendees at the First Aid classes were Salvation Army staff at our Pre-schools, Primary school and Secondary School.   THQ, Officer Training College and DHQ staff joined with them for the training.   It has been many years since they had received First Aid Training.

It was also exciting that the members of Kaugere joined with the mission team each day helping with the plumbing, painting, internal repairs, and re-roofing the church building.  This led to encouraging relationships formed.   The visit of the Mission team was not only a positive influence on the corps but also on the local community and attendances have increased since the trip.   I see a sense of unity and purpose within the corps.

The whole week culminated in a cultural night with items from all the corps within the  Port Moresby area.

Woman officer

For the love of all

Scripture reveals that God values and loves the total human family equally, humanity is created in God’s image, and every human individual has God’s divine imprint on them.

"Racism is the belief that races have distinctive cultural characteristics determined by hereditary factors and that this endows some races with an intrinsic superiority over others. ‘Racism’ also refers to political or social programmes built on that belief. The use of the term ‘race’ itself is contested, but is generally used to refer to a distinct group sharing a common ethnicity, national origin, descent and/or skin colour. The Salvation Army denounces racism in all forms.

Racism is fundamentally incompatible with the Christian conviction that all people are made in the image of God and are equal in value. The Salvation Army believes that the world is enriched by a diversity of cultures and ethnicities.

The Salvation Army firmly believes that racism is contrary to God’s intention for humankind, and yet we recognise that the tendency for racism is present in all people and all societies. Racial discrimination can take many expressions, including tribalism, casteism and ethnocentrism. Racism is not only the result of individual attitudes, but can also be perpetuated by social structures and systems. Sometimes racism is overt and intentional, but often it is not.

While many Salvationists have acted firmly and courageously against racism, The Salvation Army acknowledges with regret, that Salvationists have sometimes shared in the sins of racism and conformed to economic, organisational and social pressures that perpetuate racism. The Salvation Army is committed to fight against racism wherever it is experienced and will speak into societies around the world wherever we encounter it.

As we pray for God’s will to be done on earth as in Heaven, The Salvation Army will work towards a world where all people are accepted, loved and valued."

The History of The Salvation Army

Soon after beginning his ministerial career in England in 1852, William Booth abandoned the concept of the traditional church pulpit in favor of taking the gospel of Jesus Christ directly to the people. Walking the streets of London, he preached to the poor, the homeless, the hungry, and the destitute.

When fellow clergymen disagreed with Booth’s unconventional approach, he and his wife Catherine withdrew from the church to train evangelists throughout England. The couple returned to the East End of London in 1865, where many followers joined their fight for the souls of lost men and women. Within 10 years, their organization, operating under the name The Christian Mission, had over 1,000 volunteers and evangelists.

Thieves, prostitutes, gamblers, and drunkards were among their first converts to Christianity. And soon, those converts were also preaching and singing in the streets as living testimonies to the power of God.

When Booth read a printer's proof of the 1878 Christian Mission annual report, he noticed the statement, "The Christian Mission is a volunteer army." Crossing out the words "volunteer army," he penned in "Salvation Army." From those words came the basis of the foundation deed of The Salvation Army.

From that point onward, converts became soldiers of Christ and were known then, as now, as Salvationists. They launched an offensive throughout the British Isles that, in spite of violence and persecution, converted 250,000 Christians between 1881 and 1885. Their message spread rapidly, gaining a foothold in America and soon after Canada, Australia, France, Switzerland, India, South Africa, Iceland, and Germany.

Today, The Salvation Army is active in virtually every corner of the world and serves in 134 countries, offering the message of God’s healing and hope to all those in need.

About the Red kettle

salvation army mission trips

Sharing is Caring is a long-standing motto that succinctly describes the partnership between The Salvation Army and the community. The iconic Salvation Army red kettle campaign began in 1891 by Captain Joseph McFee, a Salvation Army officer who was looking for a way to cover the cost of the community Christmas meal. Recalling his days as a sailor in Liverpool, England, he recreated the “Simpson’s Pot”, an iron pot where charitable donations were placed by passersby. Captain McFee placed a similar pot at the Oakland Ferry Landing, at the foot of Market Street where it could be seen by all those going to and from the ferry boats. By 1895 the ‘kettle’ was used by 30 locations along the west coast and by 1897 the campaign was making its mark in east. That year, the kettle effort in Boston and other locations nationwide resulted in 150,000 Christmas dinners for the needy. The tradition continues still today. Sharing your donation at Christmastime helps The Salvation Army care for homeless and needy families, but also helps serve 30 million people through a myriad of other services all year long. These include:

  • Religious Services provide a place of worship and community without discrimination in every zip code across the United States
  • Disaster Response Services which include assisting survivors of natural and man-made disasters to recover and rebuild their lives
  • Social Service programs provide food, shelter, clothing, and financial assistance
  • Casework and Counseling with programs for health care and residential assistance and abuse counseling
  • Youth Services with programs for music, athletics, arts, and crafts, camping and family counseling
  • Senior Centers focused on assisting the needs of older adults --including eight Silvercrest centers where seniors’ assistance is partially subsidized by federal government dollars
  • Christmas Programs in which the famous Red Kettles are a centerpiece, to help families and individuals financially at year-end with toys, meals and other assistance
  • Human and Sexual Trafficking Advocacy where Army officers and staff are focused on public policy in Washington, D.C., and providing services and advocacy for victims of this international crime
  • Veterans Services provide a range of support, gifts, counseling, housing assistance, and comfort to those in need
  • Prison Services include Bible correspondence courses, gifts/material aid, prerelease job training programs, employment opportunities in cooperation with parole personnel, and spiritual guidance for both prisoners and their families

Our Founders

salvation army mission trips

William Booth began The Salvation Army in 1865 as a means to help the suffering souls throughout London who were not willing to attend – or even welcomed into – a traditional church.

Thieves, prostitutes, gamblers, and drunkards were among his first converts to Christianity, and as his ministry grew, the gospel of Jesus Christ was spread far and wide to the poor, the vulnerable, and the destitute.

Though General Booth died in 1912, he laid a firm foundation for the lifesaving work that The Salvation Army continues to perform today in over 100 countries.

salvation army mission trips

Catherine Booth was known as the “Army Mother.” In her world, women had few rights,no place in the professional sphere, and a minimal presence in church leadership.

Yet in her marriage to William Booth, she became an evangelist, preacher, theologian, and co-founder of The Salvation Army.

A truly passionate Christian, Catherine believed that loving God meant loving people through action. Her legacy of love, sacrifice, and service continues to shape The Salvation Army today.

salvation army mission trips

The seventh child of William and Catherine Booth, Eva Cory Booth was a gifted speaker, musician, and leader sent by her father to spread The Army’s mission in North America.

During her 30 years as national commander in the United States, Evangeline was responsible for the volunteers who served as chaplains and “Doughnut Girls” during World War I, and also for the division of the country into four territories.

In 1934, Evangeline became The Army's fourth general. She left America on the highest crest of love and popularity she had ever known, and retained her American citizenship until her death in 1950.

salvation army mission trips

Though often considered a rude and even obnoxious rule-breaker, “Joe the Turk” opened many important doors for Salvationists across America.

With an inherent passion for protecting the persecuted, he eventually traded in his drinking and smoking habits for a life as a Christian, where he went on to serve as a spirited captain in The Salvation Army until 1925.

Famous for his colorful ministry and attention-getting antics, Joe was often “jailed for Jesus,” and he became known as a spiritual father to thousands of formerly lost souls.

salvation army mission trips

Eliza Shirley pioneered the establishment of The Salvation Army in the United States.

After faithfully serving with the Booths in London’s East End as part of “The Christian Mission,” a 17-year-old Eliza followed God’s call to America.

There she joined her parents (who had recently immigrated to Philadelphia for work), and swiftly began her work for The Army. Her humble mission grew into a nationwide presence of peace and hope for those most in need.

salvation army mission trips

After serving as the Booths’ family secretary in London, George went on to establish The Salvation Army’s presence in New York.

His talent for languages and love of travel also helped him pave the way for Salvationist work in France, Switzerland, Sweden, Germany, China, and Japan.

In addition to creating Army song books in Zulu and Dutch and beginning the Army and Navy League for Salvationist servicemen away from home, Railton founded the Prison Gate work for recently released prisoners.

salvation army mission trips

Well known as a minister to The Salvation Army's officers and soldiers in the United States, Brengle served for 30 years.

He believed that those who seek God “burst into flame” when they first touch Him and that they can bring those “left out in the cold” to His light.

To Brengle, the Corps was a sacred place from which the love and power of God could be communicated to all; entire cities could be energized and "lit up" by the prayer of soldiers who had “caught the flame.”

For the last 20 summers, Boston 25 News has hosted ‘Zip Trips’, live broadcasts from local communities in Massachusetts. These events showcase the diversity of Massachusetts by meeting residents, local businesses, and covering local events and happenings.

These engaging events fit in line perfectly with The Salvation Army’s mission. At Boston 25’s Zip Trip event in Whitman, MA, the Army was on hand to continue their working relationship with the news channel. A table was set up for snacks, beverages, and information on Salvation Army  back to school events, summer camp, canteens, and programs for veterans.

“Boston 25 is a wonderful partner for us,” says Major Scott Kelly, officer at the Salvation Army in MA. “Their anchors have participated in our events, such as emceeing our annual luncheon. Being a part of Zip Trips across the state this summer is a way for us to support Boston 25 and introduce people to what the Army does.”

“I met a woman who remembered that her own mother received help from the Army years ago. In turn, that woman volunteers for us now. It’s very encouraging to know that we’ve had that effect on people, and the influence continues to this day,” says Major Scott.

The Army’s table also had a sign-up sheet for anyone who wanted to become a volunteer during the upcoming kettle season.

“An event like this is especially important to our Service Extension unit, since it doesn’t operate from an official church or building,” says Timothy Veglas, Service Extension field rep. “The connections we make through Boston 25 Zip Trips are very helpful for us, because we are meeting people where they are and providing help and hope to our neighbors in need.”

A Story of Compassion, Support, and Hope: The Salvation Army and FedEx

Mar 21, 2024

In times of crisis, when communities are grappling with the aftermath of disasters, The Salvation Army consistently stands at the forefront, offering essential services such as food, water, and spiritual support to survivors and first responders. At the heart of the rapid and effective response are canteens, mobile feeding units, which not only serve as distribution facilities but also act as vital hubs for volunteers and service personnel to find the necessary provisions to sustain recovery efforts.

For the past eighteen years, a powerful partnership has been forged with FedEx's charitable giving program, FedEx Cares. This collaboration has played a pivotal role in fortifying disaster response capabilities and extending a helping hand to community outreach programs. Over the course of the partnership, FedEx has supported the services of The Salvation Army by assisting with charitable shipping  and providing 23 co-branded canteens to locations both within the United States and internationally.

While the canteens play an important role in disaster response, their impact extends beyond emergencies. Many nights canteens canvass locations around cities providing food to the homeless and food-insecure individuals. Beyond physical sustenance, canteens can be used as an instrument to spread joy and hope. During the 2023 holiday season, eight canteens were used to serve food, snacks, hot cocoa, and coffee at holiday events; serving to uplift spirits during what can be a challenging time for many. In addition, some of the events took a greater heartwarming dimension as more than 12,720 toys were distributed to children in need, spreading cheer in the face of adversity.

Charitable shipping helps cover costs to provide necessary equipment, food, and supplies to individuals and families assisted by The Salvation Army. For example, the charitable shipping donation will make it possible for more than 300 beds to be shipped to Lahaina, Hawaii, ensuring children who lost everything in the devastating fires don’t go without a place to lay their head at night.

The ongoing collaboration between The Salvation Army and FedEx reflects a shared dedication to serving communities in times of crisis. These joint efforts not only address the immediate needs of communities in crisis but create lasting impacts, fostering resilience and recovery. Hand-in-hand, The Salvation Army and FedEx continue to write a story of compassion, support, and hope for those in need.

"Salvation Army Banned in Moscow under the Russian Law on Religion"

(keston news service, december 6, 2001).

Colonel Kenneth Baillie, the commanding officer of the Salvation Army in Russia, has vowed that the group's Moscow branch will "keep on working" despite the court ruling today (6 December) that it must cease all its activities in the Russian capital. Speaking to Keston News Service outside the courtroom in Moscow immediately after the verdict was handed down, he said he had been hoping that the municipal court would at least have delayed a final decision in view of the pending Constitutional Court case, which will consider the constitutionality of Article 27, Part 4 of Russia's 1997 law on religion. The prosecutors claim the Salvation Army's Moscow branch had violated this article.
