2022 SMART Modified Tour Is Bigger & Better

Bigger and better. Those are two words that sum up the Southern Modified Auto Racing Tour's (SMART) plans for the 2022 season.

On Thursday evening, series officials released a 12-race schedule that will see the tour visit 11 different race tracks in three states.

The 2022 schedule is the most robust the series has offered since Chris Williams established the Southeast-based series back in 2020 after an extended absence.

After hosting four races in 2020, the number increased to 12 races at 10 tracks last season. In 2022, the schedule becomes even more diverse with the addition of three new race tracks: Southern National Motorsports Park, Orange County Speedway and Tri-County Motor Speedway.

NEWS : SMART Modified Tour, FloRacing Announce Groundbreaking Partnership

The season will once again get underway during the month of March, with Florence Motor Speedway hosting the season opener for the first time on March 5. Since the return of the tour in 2020, Florence has hosted three SMART events and become a traditional stop on the schedule.

Next up on March 19, the SMART Modified Tour will travel to Southern National Motorsports Park for the first Tour-type Modified race at the track since 2019. The high-banked bullring in Kenly, North Carolina last hosted a SMART Modified Tour event in 1994.

One week later on March 26, the tour will head to Caraway Speedway for the first of two stops in 2022. Since the revival of the tour, Caraway has hosted five SMART events, including three this past season.

To kick off the month of April, the tour will make its first of four stops in the state of Virginia for a race at the historic South Boston Speedway (VA) on April 2. The tour will return to Virginia eight days later on April 10 for a rumble around Franklin County Speedway.

Following the race at Franklin County Speedway, the tour will take its traditional summer break to allow Modified competitors to compete at Bowman Gray Stadium and other events in the region.

VIDEO: The SMART Modified Tour announced its 2022 schedule with a fun and creative video.

A single event will be held during the month of June at Caraway Speedway on June 29 before another two month break prior to Labor Day Weekend.

Action will get back underway in a big way during the month of September with a stop at Carteret County Speedway on September 3. From there, the series will make its debut at Orange County Speedway on September 10.

A return to the beautiful Dominion Raceway will take place on September 17 prior to a triple-header during the month of October.

The October schedule begins on the first day of the month with a return trip Motor Mile Speedway in Virginia. One week later, the SMART Modified Tour will visit the "World's Most Famous Short Track," Hickory Motor Speedway on October 8.

Tri County Motor Speedway will play host to the season finale and crown the 2022 SMART Modified Tour champion on October 15.

Burt Myers was crowned the 2021 SMART champion after a tight battle with John Smith.

As announced earlier this offseason, every SMART Modified Tour race will be streamed live exclusively on FloRacing in 2022. If you're not already a subscriber, click here to become one today.

PRA SOUTHERN MODIFIED RACING SERIES ANNOUNCES RULE CHANGES

smart modified tour rules

For Immediate Release

(Sophia, NC): On August 18th the Southern Modified Racing Series and the newly formed Southern Modified Auto Racing Teams joined forces to present a unified front to boost the Open wheel Modifieds in the South.

As with any historic joining of forces adjustments to one business plan or in this case, rules package, must be made. SMRS has in the past allowed the Progressive Sealed motor with a 750 cfm carburetor. That engine is allowed under the SMART rules package but must compete with a 390 cfm carburetor.

SMRS Officials misunderstood the carburetor rule and posted the old SMRS package would be in effect which is not the case. The events will be run under the SMART rules package. The Progressive and Hamner sealed engines must compete with the SMART approved 390 cfm carburetor.

We apologize for the mistake and hope to see everyone at the August 29th event at Caraway Speedway.

For more information or to obtain an Entry Form, contact Darren Hackett at 336-302-5848 or Randy Myers at 336-972-4362.

Revived smart tour concludes successful first year.

A competitive season for the revived series featured a diverse schedule that saw nine different drivers take home victories in 12 races.

Brandon White headshot

The SMART Modified Tour spent the duration of 2021 re-establishing the presence its predecessor once had in the southeast.

A competitive season for the revived series featured a diverse schedule that saw nine different drivers take home victories in 12 races, all of which culminated with Modified veteran and 10-time Bowman Gray Stadium track champion Burt Myers claiming the title over Brian Loftin and John Smith.

SMART Modified Tour director Chris Williams anticipated some growing pains for the series in its first full year but even he was surprised by the tour’s quick rise in popularity amongst tracks, fans, and drivers.

“Everything went pretty good,” Williams said. “The car count was extremely great, and it got better as the year progressed. The tracks we went to had great races and the fans really liked the format we put out. This is something tangible we can grow with, and we beat our expectations.”

One goal Williams had entering 2021 was to establish credibility so that the current iteration of the SMART Modified Tour could have its own unique identity compared to the version that ran from 1989 up until 2004.

Williams knew concerns would be prevalent regarding revenue and sufficient car counts following the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, but he worked strenuously to create an atmosphere equally appealing to drivers and fans.

To incentivize competitive on-track action, Williams implemented a two-segment format across every SMART Modified Tour race. The top three drivers each received bonus money at the stage break while they and the rest of the competitors had the opportunity to use an extra tire or adjust their cars under the ensuing caution.

This strategy paid dividends for the SMART Modified Tour, as the series was able to generate solid attendance at nearly every race while also attracting a plethora of drivers that came from various racing backgrounds.

Familiar faces from the old SMART Modified Tour returned to support its revival like Myers, Loftin and Smith but outsiders like 2013 NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour champion Ryan Preece and NASCAR Hall of Famer Bobby Labonte not only entered races but also managed to visit victory lane at least once.

Williams said that having drivers like Labonte, Preece, Myers and many others commit to the SMART Modified Tour helped tremendously in generating momentum for the series in 2021, adding that their feedback has been valuable when it comes to sustaining that growth over the rest of the decade.

“The Modifieds are something that just about any driver has an inkling to do,” Williams said. “One thing I do is get ideas from guys that run multiple different tracks and pick their brains on what they would like to see happen. Part of the credibility is listening to the racer on how to evolve.”

Seeing so many different drivers visit victory lane in 2021 and being able to hoist the official SMART Modified Tour race-winning trophy in the SMARTY was a highlight for Williams, who had several drivers tell him that the SMARTY was one of their favorites.

Williams was also thrilled to see Buddy Ellis bring home the SMART Modified Tour owner’s championship with Smith, Danny Bohn and Jonathan Brown all splitting seat time in his No. 24 during the regular season.

Numerous races stood out to Williams across the season, but he said having the SMART Modified Tour establish a presence in Virginia while also bringing in healthy car counts for those races only highlighted the determination everyone put in towards providing notoriety and energy for the series.

“There were multiple moments that were just cool,” Williams said. “We went to tracks like South Boston and Motor Mile that haven’t seen Modified racing in a while and that really put a smile on the competitors' faces. The crowds that showed up only proved that going back to these places was the right thing to do.”

While Williams is proud of the progress the SMART Modified Tour enjoyed in 2021, he said the series still needs to improve in several aspects.

Along with continuing to listen to driver feedback, Williams wants to increase the overall purses for 2022 so that competitors do not feel as much of a financial strain whenever they decide to travel for a SMART Modified Tour event.

Williams also hopes more fans will become invested in the SMART Modified Tour as the series continues to expand its presence in the southeast.

“We want to reach more fans by going to a few different tracks,” Williams said. “Once you get to witness a Modified event, you get hooked. The goal is to broaden ourselves as much as we can to get fans introduced to the sport and going to different events is the catalyst for us moving forward.”

With several drivers already expressing an interest in competing on the SMART Modified Tour next year, Williams is confident that the series will have no issues with providing top quality racing and proudly carrying on the legacy of its predecessor.

Sadler-Stanley Racing Opens 2024 SMART Modified Tour Season With A Top-Five Finish

Sadler-Stanley Racing opened the 2024 season with the SMART Modified Tour powered by Pace-O-Matic on Saturday evening at Florence Motor Speedway.

With two drivers battling in the Peanut Patch 99 driving Pace-O-Matic sponsored Modifieds, the first race of the season included ups and downs for the southern Modified team.

Luke Baldwin posted the fastest lap in practice in his Tour-Type Modified debut in the No. 7VA, while Jonathan Cash was 7th in the only practice round of the day. As the South Carolina sun busted through the clouds, Baldwin posted the third fastest qualifying lap, and Cash the 14th.

Baldwin ran around the top-five for the duration of the race and ended with a top-five finish in fifth-place after 99 laps. Cash had some mid-race trouble running inside the top-10, had to pit, and finished 16th in the first race of the season.

Overall, the Sadler-Stanley Racing, Pace-O-Matic team had speed in their PSR Chassis Modifieds and everyone involved looks forward to the second race of the season next weekend at Caraway.

Sadler-Stanley Racing will return to the track next Sunday, March 10, for the second race of the SMART Modified Tour season. Baldwin, Cash and NASCAR Hall of Fame driver Bobby Labonte, a former SMART Modified Tour winner with the team, will drive entries for the team. The race will once again air live on FloRacing.TV.

SMART Modified Tour invades New River in 2024

SMART Modified Tour invades New River in 2024

JACKSONVILLE, NC – For the first time in a generation, the SMART Modified Tour will invade the abrasive New River All American Speedway as part of a coastal doubleheader on Labor Day Weekend.

The SMART Modified Tour will stage its first race at New River since 2000 on Friday, August 30, 2024.  The race will also mark the first time Tour Modifieds have raced at the track since May 2014.  The two tour-modified races were won by Junior Miller (2000) and David Calabrese (2014) when the track ran under the Coastal Plains Raceway banner.

In recent years, the SMART Modified Tour has featured names such as 2000 NASCAR Cup Series champion and Hall of Fame inductee Bobby Labonte, 2008 Daytona 500 winner Ryan Newman, three-time series champion, three-time SMART Modified Tour champion Burt Myers, Brandon Ward, Jeremy Gerstner, Caleb Heady, and many more.

The USAC Eastern Midgets will also race at New River on Friday, August 30.  It will be the fourth appearance the series has made at New River All American Speedway.

“We’ve been wanting to bring the SMART Modified Tour to New River and we’re excited to finally make it happen,” Anthony Goodyear, New River All American Speedway operator, said.  “Fans have been wanting us to bring the SMART Modifieds in, and we know our fans are excited to have the USAC Eastern Midgets come back, so August 30 is definitely a date that should be circled on everyone’s calendar.”

The SMART Tour is the latest addition to what will be an action-packed 2024 calendar.  The full schedule will be released in the coming weeks.  As previously announced, the zMAX CARS Tour will return to New River All American Speedway on Saturday, March 23, 2024.

New River All American Speedway will be back in action on New Year’s Day with the third running of the Hangover Nationals featuring Bombers, Legends, Rumblers, Bandoleros and Powder Puff racing.  The green flag will drop at 12:00pm.

New River All-American Speedway is Jacksonville’s Action Attraction featuring racing and other events.  For more information about New River All-American Speedway,  check out the speedway’s website ,  like/follow “New River Speedway” on Facebook ,  follow @newriverswy on X (formerly known as Twitter) , or  follow the track on Instagram .

smart modified tour rules

The SMART Modified Tour powered by Pace-O-Matic released their 2024 season schedule Tuesday from its Martinsville, Virginia headquarters. The schedule will consist of 15 races across North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia for the 600-horsepower open wheeled race cars.

A few surprises are hidden within the 2024 SMART Modified Tour schedule. The first and biggest is how the Tour will end its season, with the championship finale being held at historic North Wilkesboro Speedway (NC) in conjunction with the CARS Tour on October 19. An announcement was made in creative fashion, with a video starring 2023 SMART Mod Champ Burt Myers and zMAX CARS Tour Co-owner and NASCAR Cup Series veteran Kevin Harvick.

“I think it’s a big thing for the SMART Tour to close the season there,” says Myers. “Being a part of the video with Kevin, Chris and (Matthew) Dillner was a lot of fun. The ownership group at the CARS Tour really gets it. From Dale (Earnhardt) Jr, to Kevin, Jeff Burton to Justin Marks, those guys have been there and done that in the sport and know how hard it is to be a Short Track racer. Sometimes you race Saturdays and then you watch on Sundays and can feel forgotten. That ownership group has come together to give back to the Short Tracks. Think about it, maybe five years ago this wouldn’t have happened?  Kevin might not have done that skit. But all of those guys are doing the right things to give back to the sport and the short track community. The same can be said of Chris Williams and the SMART Tour for advancing Mod racing down here. And for Marcus (Smith) and SMI for all they’ve done to get North Wilkesboro back as a premiere Short Track.”

“There is so much history there with all of racing, especially with Modifieds and SMART,” adds SMART Modified driver Brandon Ward.  “I’ve gotten to race on the old surface and am excited to get on the new pavement. To share the stage with another great series like the CARS Tour is another unique opportunity. To settle championships with two great full-fendered divisions and our Tour is a great ticket for any race fan.”

A new twist for the 2024 SMART season is a summer double-header between two-tracks on the coast of North Carolina during Labor Day weekend. The annual Carteret Clash, held at Swansboro, NC’s Carteret County Speedway will now be preceded on Friday night by the Pace-O-Matic 99 at nearby New River All-American Speedway. The Friday-Saturday double will be a first for the modern-era of the SMART Modified Tour. The Beach weekend has family-man Brandon Ward excited.

“We love racing at the beach,” says Ward, a husband and father to an eight-year-old daughter. “The coast of North Carolina is beautiful and we always love when our family can make a vacation around racing. We used to do that with racing at Myrtle Beach Speedway all the time. Now it doubles the reason for us to take a beach vacation with running New River and Carteret back-to-back.

“I’ve raced on a Friday night with SMART and then gone and ran at Bowman Gray on Saturday night in the Modified. That in itself is awesome to do as a racer. To have our Tour do that back-to-back is special. It does have an old school feel where you might have to go to the parking lot of the hotel after Friday night to hammer some body panels or replace a bumper or nerf bar. It can be exciting, challenging or even a disaster if you get caught up in a crash or have an engine failure in the first race. There’s two paths that double-header can take, but one thing is for absolute certain, the excitement level for the drivers, teams and fans will be there no matter what.”

Myers, a three-time SMART Tour Champion, thinks the beach double can be an advantage to a race team.

“Economically it works out for us racers,” explains Myers. “You are already down there, so now running two shows, a Friday and Saturday just 40-mins apart, should help everybody that is going down there make the trip more worthwhile. Racing and a couple of days on the beach isn’t a bad thing.”

Another surprise on the schedule was the spring-race at Virginia’s South Boston Speedway being named “The King of the Modifieds.”  SMART Modified Tour director Chris Williams has been keeping details of the race close to his vest, making most in the Southern Modified scene curious about the March 23rd event.

“I’m intrigued by the King of the Modifieds race,” says Myers. “There’s some talk going around about it already about what Chris is trying to do and it has us excited. We see a lot of big dirt races across the country and you see some of them on FloRacing. That world has so many big money shows with 50 to 60 cars. The idea of Mods potentially being able to do something bigger than normal is cool. It wasn’t long ago that Southern Modified racing was perceived as dying and now it’s become very healthy in a short amount of time.”

“Mods in the south need a crown jewel event and something new,” says Brandon Ward. “It’s time for something new because every so often, you have to do something different and not get too habitual. This new event, a big event, whatever it is, has me excited. Maybe it attracts some more northern Modified teams? It’s the perfect place to do it because you can race hard at South Boston. The track is big enough and pit road is big enough. Knowing something is coming down the pipeline, and something bigger is being efforted, should have everybody in the sport excited.”

Hey @CARSTour and @KevinHarvick ! Y'all got room for the @SMARTMods_ at @NWBSpeedway on October 19? pic.twitter.com/VqtCp7ej0R — FloRacing (@FloRacing) December 5, 2023

There are several highlights on the schedule for SMART. The newly improved Tri-County Speedway in Granite Falls, NC, with its state-of-the-art lighting system, moves from a fall event to the spring with the Cardinal 99 on March 30. Also moving to the spring season is Orange County Speedway’s “Rumble in Rougemont” which will take place on Saturday April 6 in Rougemont, NC. The third annual Hickory Hundred carries on the long-time legacy of Modified racing at historic Hickory Motor Speedway (NC) on April 13. Traditional Southern Mod staple Franklin County Speedway (VA) runs the Kenny Minter Classic on May 24. The Inaugural Mod Squad Nationals will be held on Wednesday night September 18, before Bristol’s NASCAR weekend kicks off, at Virginia’s Lonesome Pine Speedway. On the schedule to be the penultimate race of the season is a 99-lapper at Little Rockingham Speedway behind the historic Rockingham Speedway (NC).

Caraway Speedway will hold three races on the SMART Tour. The Warrior 100 is the second race of the SMART season on Sunday March 10. The Independence weekend tradition of the Revolutionary 99 continues on Saturday July 6. The additional date comes with the move of the Robert Jeffreys Memorial to the Sophia, NC half-mile speedplant on September 7.

Another event will move locations in 2024 with the “Flying VA Classic,” honoring Southern Modified great Ray Hendrick, sliding north from South Boston to the ultra-modern Dominion Raceway in Thornburg, Virginia on September 14.

“Ray Hendrick is one of the greatest to ever race a Modified and he’s from Richmond,” says Myers. “Dominion is  one of my favorite tracks. Years ago, I was a keynote speaker at their banquet. When I saw the place for the first time that day and then turned some laps in a Late Model, this was a pure Modified track. It’s made for Modified racing. I want to take that victory lap with the Ray Hendrick Flying 11 and get the SMARTY from Roy Hendrick. At Franklin County I got to take a victory lap alongside Gerald Compton’s car and that was a cool experience. Things like that and the title-belt for the Rumble in Rougemont at Orange County makes you motivated even more to win a race.”

“I think what we’ve done to honor Ray Hendrick is special,” says Ward, who has finished second in SMART Modified Tour points for the last two-seasons. “That victory lap with his Flying 11 is iconic and makes you want to win that race. The creativity behind that concept and all the things that SMART does to make these races special is amazing.”

All 15-races for the SMART Modified Tour will be broadcast live on FloRacing.

“It’s big for us to be on FloRacing,” explains Brandon Ward. “For example: Take Bowman Gray Stadium (Brandon Ward is the 2023 Modified Division Track Champion at Stadium) and they race weekly in front of the same fans every week. Now, you put it on Flo and the whole country knows about it.  You take our platform with SMART and expose it to more people and that is a big thing for the drivers, sponsors, and teams.

“My family loves it.  My little girl loves Flo because she gets to watch every race she can not attend. Streaming in general has a huge advantage. It doesn’t keep people from attending events. It makes it easy to follow a Tour and gets them to want to come to more events. The fans that live too far away to attend get to watch it and are exposed to the SMART Modified Tour.”

Heady Looks To Lock Up Third Championship of the Season for TBR at Motor Mile Speedway

smart modified tour rules

Fresh off a top-five finish with the SMART Modified Tour at Tri-County Speedway last weekend, Tommy Baldwin Racing and driver Caleb Heady are set to race for the championship this Saturday. As the series heads to Motor Mile Speedway – a place both Heady and Baldwin Racing feel confident about – Heady leads by 37 points over NASCAR Hall of Famer Bobby Labonte, and 44 over Brandon Ward.

All three drivers are part of the “SMART 3” that are in contention to win the title in the season-finale. In order to lock up the title, Heady will need to put together a solid night in Virginia behind the wheel of the No. 7NY. He enters the race with a comfortable enough margin to feel confident about locking it up.

Not only would this be Heady’s first Modified championship, but the young rising star would also help Tommy Baldwin Racing grab their third title of the 2022 season – as the team also recently locked up the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour owner’s championship with three different drivers over the 16-race schedule. In February, Tommy Baldwin Racing won the New Smyrna Speedway World Series of Asphalt crown with Jimmy Blewett driving.

“We’re excited for Motor Mile,” Tommy Baldwin Jr. said. “We should have won there last year until a late restart, but Caleb knows the track and we should have a strong car on Saturday night that will put us in contention. It’s been a consistent year for us with the SMART Modified Tour and we would like nothing more than to seal up the championship to add to our record year – continuing to cement the legacy of the 7NY.”

Saturday’s 99-lap race is part of a full night at Motor Mile, which also includes the Sportsman and Super Streets (double features), as the track will also crown champions in those divisions.

Heady knows the number one goal on Saturday is to complete the race and lock up the title, but he wants to end the season with a bang on top in Victory Lane. Much like Heady, Baldwin is confident heading back to Motor Mile.

“I’m extremely excited to get back to Motor Mile this weekend,” Heady said. “We had a good result there last year. Motor Mile is definitely a track that I’ve looked forward to going back to since the beginning of the season, looking to get that redemption and park in Victory Lane. I have a lot of confidence there. I’m ready to go out and give Tommy and his entire team another title. They deserve it.”

Saturday’s racing action at Motor Mile Speedway begins at 5 p.m. local time. The SMART Modified Tour feature will air live on FloRacing.TV for those who would like to watch the action. All information regarding the SMART Modified Tour can be found online at SmartModTour.com.
