Over three decades the lifelong friends that are the members of elbow have created one of the most remarkable stories in British contemporary music.

Formed in Bury in the 90’s when all the members were together at sixth form college, elbow’s history now encompasses seven studio albums, a long list of awards and a place in the roll call of great British bands.

For a group with such a long history, the sense that they are yet to achieve their total potential has pushed elbow on throughout their long career. Their most recent albums, ‘The Take Off and Landing of Everything’ (2014) and ‘Little Fictions’ (2017) have both debuted at Number One in the UK album charts and the band’s touring schedule has seen them play to ever increasing audiences across the world alongside first-time forays to the likes of Mexico, where their debut in the country was greeted by an audience of 80,000 at Corona Capital 2017. Such a high-profile debut holds no terrors for elbow, the band whose two Glastonbury Pyramid sunset slots are regarded by critics as amongst the finest moments in the festival’s long history.

Such a prestigious history is packed with highlights. Their 2008 Mercury Prize win for fourth album, ‘The Seldom Seen Kid’, transformed them from respected band into household names, it’s attendant single ‘One Day Like This’ becoming the soundtrack to everything from the BBC’s Beijing Olympics coverage to the Big Brother final. Following the Mercury win, the 2009 BRIT award for Best British Group and three Ivor Novello songwriting awards for ‘One Day Like This’, Grounds For Divorce’ and ‘Magnificent (She Says)’.

Lead singer Guy Garvey, who also has his own BBC 6 Music radio show, has been rightly commended with two awards in 2018 for his contribution to UK music. The Music Manager’s Forum and Featured Artist’s Coalition acclaimed Guy as the ‘Artist’s Artist’ at their 2018 Artist and Manager Awards whilst BASCA presented Guy with a Gold Badge award, in recognition of his long contribution to the musical and lyrical canon of British popular culture.

elbow first came to national attention with the band’s inclusion in The John Peel Festive 50 for ‘Powder Blue’ from the debut EP, ‘Noisebox’, in 1998 and, throughout the intervening time, their connection to music lovers had been a recurring theme. Often cited by other artists and familiar names from popular culture including the disparate likes of Elton John, John Cale, Ian Rankin, Michael Caine and Dame Katherine Grainger, the love that the UK has for the band is possibly best demonstrated by their high standing in the all-time Desert Island Discs chart, one of only a handful of contemporary acts to be chosen by the public.

As you would expect, much has changed for the band in those decades. The young men of the Mercury nominated 2001 debut ‘Asleep In The Back’ are now fathers. Their journey to date has taken them from a rehearsal room in Bury across the globe, with band members working on side projects and solo projects in addition to elbow. Guy’s debut solo album, ‘Courting The Squall’, entered the UK charts at Number 3 in 2016 and he has found time to write and perform on film soundtracks and collaborate with Craig Armstrong on recent track ‘Cornflower (Marelle)’. Keyboardist Craig Potter has expanded his production work from elbow’s albums to ex Beta Band frontman Steve Mason’s acclaimed album ‘Meet The Humans’ and working with C Duncan. Guitarist Mark Potter formed blues band The Plumedores. Yet, at heart, elbow were, are and will be the same band, driven to create and continually better their ongoing legacy by the simple maxim that Guy proclaimed on the release of ‘Newborn’, the NME and Melody Maker single of the week that really made people start taking notice of them back in 1999:

"Honesty is a word that surfaces over and over when we are writing which is why I think the romance in our music is always balanced with realism. We are each other’s biggest influences. Basically, this is where we have been for all our adult lives.”

elbow are currently in the studio working on their eighth studio album, due for release in the autumn of 2019 and will play a series of shows next summer. See www.elbow.co.uk for all confirmed dates.

Live reviews

I saw Elbow on the 3rd of their 4 sell-out nights at the Manchester Apollo. Huge fan of the band, as I think they paint their hometown in a way nobody else does.

I think the problem with seeing Elbow live when one is at the age I am (first year uni student at the time of writing) is that they have aged and so have their fans. I'm not personally a huge fan of the new album and prefer their older work, but leaving that aside, it can be painful to see Guy working hard to get an average 45 year-old crowd to participate in doing things enthusiastically. This has a wearing effect on the gig and its atmosphere, as the venue is too large to be intimate, yet the crowd too reluctant to be excited and properly involved.

Elbow's music is good, don't get me wrong. Very good, in fact. Some of it is sublime, and I was delighted that they played "Great Expectations", one of their very best, on the night. But it doesn't seem so great in a huge, hollow hall of the seemingly semi-interested, or when combined with some not-quite-as-good newer music they've made.

It was also over £40.00, which was quite a lot for a medium gig. I love Elbow and that won't change, but I'd hesitate before going to see them again considering the stage they and their fans have reached.

Elbow and John Grant, Magnificent I say.

My fist Elbow gig and also my first John Grant gig

Up first an eight song set by John Grant fizzling with good humour, swear words aplenty and that beautiful tenor voice Marz and Glacier were outstanding.

Elbow came on stage just after 8:30, Mr Garvey in 90’s handwaving top form, a little demob happy as this was the last gig for some time as he played master of ceremonies though Elbows greatest hits. The voice is just so pure as the music swells around his word pictures and his bro romance with John Grant is hilarious . The whole set was outstanding with light show and back screens to match.Disapointed that there was no sad captains, but the duet between Garvey and Grant made up for it. Loved little fictions, grounds for divorce, Lippy kids but hearing one day like this live for the first time made my night. Come back soon Elbow, until then I will throw those curtains wide.

John Grant Five Stars

The whole evening not enough stars in the universe to do it justice!

Elbow have been a band I've wanted to see for so long. So back in April when they were announced to play in Cork I knew this was finally my chance. I got there early so I could get to the front and ended up front and centre, straight in front of Guy. They came out on stage and there was no desperation from other fans to get a glimpse of the band, just sheer joy that these wonderful musicians had taken to the stage. Their show was absolutely mesmerising, from the beautiful moments of The Night Will Always Win to the adrenaline pumping Grounds For Divorce, Guy Garvey had the Cork crowd in the palm of his hands and loving every single second of it. The night ended with Guy stating "Cork you've been wonderful, have a great night, in fact, no, have a great fucking life!" Then blasted into a rendition of One Day Like This that'll stay with me for the rest of my days, it was such a pure and beautiful moment. If you've ever wanted to see Elbow and you get even half a chance to then take it. You won't regret it.

This was a family outing and our 2nd time seeing Elbow at Hammersmith Apollo. We always go for standing room near the front. Guy Garvey is such an incredible frontman with an amazing voice. He introduced each song and also the band including the new drummer Alex Reeves who has a hard act to follow but was excellent. Richard Jupp left the band last year after 25 years. Pete Turner, Mark Potter and Craig Potter were all superb and the 2 female backing vocalists, violinists and percussionists were perfection - so multi-talented.

The sound at the Apollo was excellent and it feels like quite an intimate gig. Elbow played all the favourites and a few of the songs from the latest album Little Fictions, including the magnificent "Magnificent". The "word perfect" enthusiastic audience sang along brilliantly to "One Day Like This".

A perfect Sunday evening.

It was advertised as a "stripped back"show, so I wasn't sure what to expect.

For Elbow, this meant just the 4 members of the band, plus Alex Reeves on drums - none of the usual strings or brass normally found on tour with them, and no fancy back drops and lighting, just a fairly basic light show.

It was a fairly intimate gig in the O2 Ritz, something like 1500 people, and it was amazing! Guy Garvey comes across as the bloke next door who would find any excuse to go for a pint with you. Everyone is his friend.

They played 8 songs, 3 from the new album, and 5 from older albums - and they were amazing! They are great in the big arenas, but even better in a smaller venue!

Waited years to see Elbow only to have to leave after a few songs last night at Newport because the lighting was horrific!! What was with the constant very long (like whole song-long!) severe flashing lights?!? I swear it was illegal :( I have photosensitive epilepsy but love going to live gigs. This was the WORST I've come across in terms of lighting that I've even been to. It's totally unnecessary, your music doesn't need it, and you need to think about accessibility for ALL your fans. I don't expect to pay £70 for 2 tickets then have to leave. Luckily the Newport staff were great and made sure I was ok. I'm so disappointed as I'd waited years.

Awesome gig, absolutely loved it, a great selection of songs, old and new, all classics.

The whole gig appreciated by young and old alike, I have never seen such an age range at a Saturday night gig at the Apollo, was wonderful to see, a real family event.

They come across as being honest, genuine and very down to earth and likeable people. Their lyrics are poetic, their music melodic, powerful and evocative, uniquely placed in today's over produced, churned out processed music scene!

Shame the support C Duncan was so atrocious, what a load of drivel! The only dampener on the eveneing.

Guy and the gang did not cease to amaze with pitch perfect vocals and brilliant interaction with the crowd. “Manchester harmony” he called it. The venue is amazing and just the right size with trains passing by to Deansgate. This causes a great response from the crowd and passengers all waving at each other.

My only negative is the sound curfew as it’s a built up area. I’m sure those all sat on their balconies getting it free wouldn’t complain. Well may be about Kylie the night after.

In all, a brilliant set list and performance from Manchester’s finest. Can’t wait for new album.

Emotional. I wanted to see this band live for ages, but, they do not cross path very often with me, (I am on tour too).

Great venue size. I was close!!! Sound was fantastic. But was it the voice??? Umm... The voice was insane, but.... everything was well balanced as well.

I was already a sick fan.Now, I have proof.

This music grabs every inch of my soul.

I was confused by the mixed audience.. I was one of the youngest. What do people my age like???? Obviously, lost souls!!! It just confirmed my undying irrational love for that band...!!!!! Ouf. Still recovering!!!

First time we have been to see Elbow live and i must say that we were not disappointed. The venue was rather a strange one being in a sports center next to the swimming pool. Support from C Duncan was good. Elbow seem to have a way of ingratiating themselves with the crowd from the get go. There are plenty of songs were they get the crowd to join in and it makes the experience of seeing them that more enjoyable. I would thoroughly recommend going to see them even if you are not necessarily a fan.

U.K. modern rock act Elbow will return to North America for a 12-date tour in support of its V2 debut, “Asleep in the Back.” The trek begins Feb. 19 in Los Angeles and will wrap March 13 in Atlanta. Beforehand, the quintet will play Thursday (Jan. 31) at London’s Shepherd’s Bush Empire. “Asleep in the Back,” released last spring in the U.K. and last Tuesday in North America, earned Elbow a nod as best newcomer in the 2002 Brit Awards , to be handed out Feb. 20 in London. In North America, first single “Newborn” hit college radio this week and is due to hit modern rock and triple-A outlets on Feb. 25. Internationally, two versions of the new “Asleep in the Back” / “Coming Second” single are due Monday, each featuring a different mix of the latter track as well as the cut “Stumble.” A DVD edition of the single sports live and remixed versions of “Coming Second,” plus tour images and four short audio visual clips. In other Elbow news, frontman Guy Garvey recently misplaced a notebook containing lyrics intended for the band’s next album. “Nobody can read my handwriting so it’s of no use to anybody apart from me,” he writes on the band’s official Web site . “If you can return it to the address on the inside cover, there will be a £100 reward for your silence.” Anyone with information can write to [email protected]. Here are Elbow’s tour dates: Jan. 31: London (Shepherd’s Bush Empire) Feb. 19: Los Angeles (Troubadour) Feb. 20: San Diego (Casbah) Feb. 25: Seattle (Crocodile Cafe) Feb. 26: Portland, Ore. Elbow ’s current world tour in support of their new hit album ‘The Take Off and Landing of Everything’ has completed its North American leg to massive acclaim from music critics and fans alike.

“Elbow continues to pursue something increasingly rare in popular music: dynamics,” purred the Wall Street Journal, who said the band “…lets its music breathe and show its natural state.” The San Francisco Examiner called the band a “prog-rock powerhouse” while QRO magazine said they “managed to be both epic and intimate.”

The 12-date tour of the U.S. and Canada was Elbow’s biggest there for more than six years, and culminated with a sellout show at the Wiltern Theater in Los Angeles on May 28. “One of the best shows I’ve seen in a long, long time,” said one fan on the Wiltern’s Facebook page. TV stops along the way included an appearance on NBC’s ‘The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon’ to perform ‘New York Morning.’

My wife and I were able to catch Elbow with 800 other bodies at the Wonder Ballroom in Portland, Oregon over Memorial weekend. They were inspiring. The energy was the same as for their more typical audiences of thousands, the intimacy even more so. Not much improvising from the quintet, but precise instrumentation and Guy’s sonorous voice and charming rapport held the audience under a spell. Catch the iTunes live video of ‘Loneliness of the Tower Crane Operator’ for a taste of their magic.

Pulp Announce First North American Tour Since 2012

By Jazz Monroe

Pulp band with Jarvis Cocker

Pulp will tour North America for the first time in more than a decade this September. Cocker and his band, having played a streak of European shows last year, will perform in Chicago, Toronto, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and New York as part of their This Is What We Do for an Encore Tour. More European shows are also in the schedule.

In a press release, Jarvis Cocker said, “So, the encore continues. The songs came back to life and they want to be heard. They need to be heard. Come out and have some fun with us. You deserve it. Yes. You do.” Support will come from Escape-ism, a band Cocker describes as “the Found-Sound-Dream-Drama featuring Ian Svenonius & Sandi Denton.” The tour is dedicated the late Pulp bassist Steve Mackey, who died in March last year.

Korn Announces Massive 2024 North American Tour to Celebrate the 30th Anniversary of Their Iconic Debut Album

The nu metal band's self-titled, debut studio album turns 30 this October

Korn is hitting the road in celebration of a huge milestone.

On Tuesday, the legendary nu metal band announced that they're setting out on a massive North American tour in 2024 to coincide with their self-titled, debut studio album turning 30 on Oct. 11.

The group will be playing 25 dates at arenas and amphitheaters across the U.S. and Canada throughout the fall. They'll also be bringing along fellow metal stars on the road, including the Grammy-nominated French group Gojira and Canada's Spiritbox .

The "Freak on a Leash" band will kick off their live dates on Sept. 12 with a show in Tampa, Florida. They'll make stops in major cities like Toronto, Detroit, Chicago, Phoenix and Houston, before eventually wrapping up with a final show in St. Paul, Minnesota on Oct. 27.

The Grammy winners confirmed their string of shows several weeks after they announced a special, 30th anniversary show. At the time, the group — fronted by Jonathan Davis — revealed that they were playing a single concert at Los Angeles' BMO Stadium on Oct. 5.

Korn took to social media to tease the gig with a trailer featuring footage from some of their most iconic music videos dating back to the '90s to get fans excited and show how far they've come. They also revealed that the show would feature an A-list lineup of supporting talent, including Evanescence , Daron Malakian , Scars On Broadway , Vended , as well as their tourmates Gojira and Spiritbox.

"Celebrating 30 years of #KORN," the "Coming Undone" group wrote in the caption. "Join us at BMO Stadium in Los Angeles for this historic, once in a lifetime event."

Fans proceeded to sell out the L.A. anniversary show, shortly after it was announced.

Korn was originally formed in 1993 by Davis, 53, guitarists Brian "Head" Welch and James "Munky" Shaffer, bassist Reginald "Fieldy" Arvizu and drummer David Silveria — all of whom remain in the band's lineup today, save for Silveria, who was eventually replaced by Ray Luzier.

One year after their formation, the California-bred band released their debut studio album, which featured songs like "Blind" and "Need To" and helped to pioneer the nu metal genre. Although the rockers found more commercial success with their sophomore release, 1996's Life Is Peachy , their debut established them as sonic purveyors and inspired a handful of other acts who followed and exuded a similar heavy, hip-hop-inspired rock sound.

Live Nation

Korn last released a full-length LP with 2022's Requiem , their 14th studio effort. The project debuted at 14 on the Billboard 200 .

The "Falling Away from Me" band is hitting the road shortly after Welch, 53, founded  Atlantic Behavioral Health , a treatment center that provides intensive outpatient treatment in Massachusetts and New Hampshire.

In late 2023, the musician announced he was launching the facility — which addresses anxiety, depression, and various mental health disorders through individual and group therapy and medication management in an outpatient program — due to his own experiences dealing with depression.

Tickets for Korn's 2024 tour will kick off with a presale for Citi cardmembers, running now until Thursday at 10 p.m. local time. The artist presale also began today, which fans can gain access to on the band's website .

General ticket sales commence on Friday at 10 a.m. local time on ticketmaster.com .

An American Who Has Helped Clear 815,000 Bombs From Vietnam

Chuck Searcy has spent decades of his life redressing a deadly legacy of America’s war in Vietnam: unexploded ordnance.

A tall, lanky man stands next to two deactivated bombs from which a profusion of red flowers pop out.

By Seth Mydans

Seth Mydans lived in Vietnam for three years during the war and has reported from the country for The New York Times since the mid-1990s. He reported this story from Hanoi and Dong Ha.

On a visit to the former battlefield of Khe Sanh, scene of one of the bloodiest standoffs of the Vietnam War, the only people Chuck Searcy encountered on the broad, barren field were two young boys who led him to an unexploded rocket lying by a ditch.

One of the youngsters reached out to give the bomb a kick until Mr. Searcy cried out, “No, Stop!”

“It was my first encounter with unexploded ordnance,” Mr. Searcy said of that moment in 1992. “I had no idea that I would be dedicating my life to removing them.”

It was not Mr. Searcy’s first encounter with Vietnam. He served there as a soldier in 1968, the same year as the battle of Khe Sanh, and came away disillusioned.

As a U.S. Army intelligence analyst, he had had access to a full range of raw information, from the enemy’s body counts to exaggerated claims of American progress.

“We got to see almost everything,” he said in a recent interview. “And I saw that our friends back home were being given information that was not just misleading but deliberate lies.”

“That shocked us as innocent young men,” he added, “and we began to feel that the system was broken.

By the time his one-year tour of duty ended, Mr. Searcy found himself doubting not only the war but his own character.

“I’ve really sometimes wondered if my timidity or refusal to step up and say this was wrong, whether this was a moral failure on my part,” he said. “It was a worry that made me feel that I was failing in a duty that I had as an American.”

That sense of duty has propelled him to commit his life to redressing one of the most deadly legacies of the war: the millions of unexploded bombs and land mines that continue to kill and injure people every year.

Now 79 and living in Hanoi, Mr. Searcy is perhaps the most widely known American veteran among Vietnamese, often giving local interviews and making statements that stress his antiwar views, and helping bend American policies toward engagement with Vietnam.

“Chuck was one of the pioneers among the veterans in normalizing relations between the two countries,” said Hoang Nam, a senior government official in Quang Tri Province who met Mr. Searcy just out of college.

Together, the two men founded Project Renew , based in Quang Tri, which since 2001 has been deploying teams of de-miners, teaching schoolchildren how to stay safe, and providing prosthetics and job training to victims.

Mr. Searcy said he was often asked what motivates his commitment to the welfare of postwar Vietnam.

It is not guilt, he said. Rather, it’s a sense of responsibility to try to remedy the damage his country has caused.

The phrase he particularly embraces is a Marine Corps directive that involves clearing away spent metal shell casings on a firing range: Policing up your brass.

Mr. Searcy is, both figuratively and literally, policing up the deadly ordnance that the Americans left behind throughout Vietnam.

Quang Tri Province, the site of Khe Sanh and on the border with the Ho Chi Minh Trail, is just below the line that divided South and North Vietnam. It was the most heavily bombed region in Vietnam, Mr. Searcy said.

“It was kind of pointless,” he said. “They just bombed and bombed and bombed until there were no targets left. That made no sense.”

Altogether, Mr. Searcy said, almost eight million tons of ordnance was dropped on Vietnam from 1965 to 1975. Bombs that failed to detonate became de facto land mines, which the Vietnamese government estimates have caused 100,000 deaths and injuries since the war’s end.

Since Project Renew began its work, in partnership with Norwegian People’s Aid — an organization that operates land mine-clearing operations in more than a dozen countries — the toll in Quang Tri has declined from over 70 incidents a year to zero in 2019. Together with the Norwegians, Project Renew employs 180 deminers.

The goal, said Mr. Nam, the co-director of Renew, is to bring the problem under control so that people can go about their lives without fear. But every day, Mr. Searcy said, his deminers receive two or three or four reports of newly discovered ordnance.

In the last three years, two people have died in Quang Tri: a man digging a new floor in his kitchen and a boy who picked up and threw a cluster bomb.

In addition, annual flooding causes the ground to shift, making it impossible to declare an area definitively cleared of ordnance.

“It’s impossible for a province or a country to be absolutely free of bombs,” Mr. Nam said.

One victim, Ho Van Lai, 34, now works with Renew, teaching schoolchildren to identify and avoid unexploded bombs.

He was a child 24 years ago when he came across a cluster bomb, known here as a bombie, by the side of the road. “We thought they were toys to play with,” he said. “I was curious. I began banging on it with a stone. I didn’t hear the explosion but I heard my friends screaming, and I felt hot inside.”

He lost both legs below the knee, one arm below the elbow and the sight in one eye.

After his year as an Army intelligence analyst in Vietnam, Mr. Searcy finished his military stint in Germany. Returning home to Athens, Ga., in 1970, he said, “I was angry and confused.”

He enrolled at the University of Georgia, where he earned a B.A. in political science, joined the antiwar group Vietnam Veterans Against the War and began to speak out publicly about his views.

His father, who had fought the Germans and been imprisoned during World War II, was furious.

“We don’t know who you are any more,” his parents told him. “What happened to you? Did they turn you into a Communist?”

But as happened to many Americans in those years, his parents’ doubts about the war gradually increased and their views changed.

“Your mother and I have been talking,” his father told him one day months later, “and we came to the conclusion that the war is a bad thing, that you were right and we were wrong.”

He and a colleague founded a weekly paper, The Athens Observer, and ran it for more than a decade. Mr. Searcy then became involved with politics, joining political campaigns and working as a U.S. Senate staff member.

In 1992, together with an Army friend, he returned to Vietnam “to see what the country looked like in peacetime.”

They spent a month on the road and found a country still suffering, cut off from international aid by an American embargo and struggling in poverty under doctrinaire Communist economic strictures.

“We were amazed at the warm welcome from the Vietnamese people, who seemed to have forgiven us for the terrible pain and suffering we caused in the war,” Mr. Searcy wrote in a reminiscence published in The Vietnam Times in 2022. “I realized then I wanted to come back and find some way to help the Vietnamese people recover from the tragic war the United States had caused.”

His first chance to help came in 1995 when the Vietnam Veterans of America Foundation asked him to set up a humanitarian project to help disabled children, amputees and others who had been crippled by polio, cerebral palsy and other diseases.

When Mr. Searcy heard how many people were still being killed by unexploded bombs, he said, “my jaw dropped.”

This became his mission. He and the Norwegian group founded Renew with half a million dollars in seed money from private donors.

Mr. Searcy has become a fixture of Hanoi’s expatriate community, a tall, lanky figure who speaks the language and seems to know almost everybody.

“He is incorrigibly social,” wrote George Black, who tells his story in “ The Long Reckoning : A Story of War, Peace and Redemption in Vietnam.”

In 2003, Mr. Searcy was awarded Vietnam’s National Friendship Medal, the highest award to a foreigner who has contributed to the country’s welfare.

In Project Renew’s two decades of operation, 815,000 bombs of all types have been detonated or taken out of action, Mr. Searcy said: aerial-dropped bombs, cluster bombs, artillery shells, booby traps, grenades and mortar rounds.

“Imagine that! 815,000, “ he said, “My god!”

An earlier version of this article referred imprecisely to an arm injury Ho Van Lai sustained in a cluster bomb explosion. He lost one of his arms below the elbow, not above the elbow.
