Hosting a travel party

' src=

If you’re interested in throwing a travel party, consider these few tips to make it a fun time for all:

1. Invite people who want to talk travel.  Usually travelers love talking about their upcoming trips or their past experiences.  Make sure to invite people who want to share ideas and want to learn from one another. 2.  Provide “trip-centric”food.   Heidi asked each of us which country we wanted to attend and she looked up a specialty snack from each country.  She printed out tags with the country’s flag and wrote down what the dish was.  This was a fun way to enjoy one another’s trips and opened up discussions about food and travel. 3.  Make sure there is some sort of presentation, movie or travelogue to watch.  It’s important not just to have guests share about their trips, but that your guests walk away more informed about traveling than they were when they first showed up.  Either invite each person so share some tips or funny travel stories where they learned something or play a traveling show/movie.  You could ask a friend whose great at packing to get a demonstration on how they pack light and things they do/don’t pack.  There are always new things to learn, either from one another or an expert. 4.  Show and tell.   It’s fun to show off some of the new travel gadgets that are available.  Maybe that’s a new camera, packing cubes, camping gear, moisture-wicking clothing, etc.  Have each guest bring their favorite new travel-related gear purchase, or even consider putting together a slide show of new items to show guests.   5.  Bring the pictures.   Another way to engage is to have your guests bring some photographs from their last trip to share with others.  This can be a great ice-breaker for guests who may not know each other, or even just something to put on the coffee table and browse at their leisure. 6.  Of course, have travel-themed decor.   Nothing sets the mood for travel more than maps, globes and suitcases.  Have fun with decorating the house with travel-themed items, and play music that inspires you to get out your passport and catch a flight. Have you ever hosted a travel party?  Would you be excited if you were invited to one?

A travel-themed party is a great way to celebrate this exciting and rewarding hobby and the world’s most wonderful destinations .

Travel-themed parties can also be a great way to get people talking and make the conversation flow. People who attend travel-themed parties will want to share with others the places they have been and the places they someday hope to go.

Ideas for travel destinations and vacations can be shared, and possible travel companionships will blossom, too.

So let’s get started.

Read on to get great themed party ideas for food, decor, and more.

Start Planning for Your Travel-Themed Party

No matter what you are celebrating, a travel-themed party should be full of travel-related decorations, finger foods, sweets, savory snacks, and even costumes, or at least a travel-themed dress code for your guests, too, right?

So, where to start?

Narrowing your travel theme down is an excellent place to start planning for a travel-themed party, and here are some suggestions to get the ball rolling and your creative juices flowing.

Single Country/Regional Theme

Maybe you are farewelling a guest, or you are migrating to a new country; you could make the theme all about that country, region, or part of the world.

With a single country theme (or even region i.e. Central America , Asia), you could theme the whole party, including decorations, dress code, food according to that country (or region) and their culture, traditions, and even flag.

Feel free to be creative. You may even find inflatables with personalized designs, which can be the country’s flag, map, or name letters, and place them as a unique decor in your party.

travel photos as decor for a party

With an idea like this, you can go all out.

There are countless ways to decorate, various foods you can serve, and many engaging activities you can plan for a travel-themed party!

Method of Travel Theme

You may want your party to celebrate travel in general, and that’s a fine idea also.

Or, you may want to focus on one method of travel, such as backpacking or cruising. Or focus on some of the attractions and activities of a particular country or region like hiking, skiing , water sports, or even wildlife or a safari.

No matter your sub-theme, your travel-themed party will be memorable if it matches your interests and those of the people you invite.

If some people you invite are not as into travel as others, those passionate about traveling will pass their enthusiasm to the other guests.

After selecting a theme for your party, start getting creative for your invites. This way, you can build excitement and anticipation for your travel-themed party, so your guests can’t wait for the date!

Essential Travel Resources

❗Don’t forget travel insurance

This company is the one I trust, it’s one of the most essential things for any trip. It has your back in case you get sick abroad, or have an accident.

🎒Pack smarter, not bulky

Check out this vacation packing list , including all the essentials you need to pack when traveling, from travel clothing to backpacks and more.

🏡Where to Stay – Here are Suggestions

This is my favorite place to look for accommodations , it offers different types, a ton of locations, and good price options.

🗺️Get Around Hassle-Free

This one is the perfect option to look for different transportation options between cities, from flights, buses, and taxis to minivans and more.

🛫Find Cheap Flights

Whenever I need to fly, I head to this website for low-cost flights.

Build Excitement with Themed Invitations

You can build anticipation for your party with themed invitations based on your overall theme selected earlier.

Encourage guests to bring travel photos or souvenirs from their travels to share, or ask them to bring a dish of local cuisine from their favorite destination or something that matches your overall theme for the party.

A great idea would be to design invitations like plane or cruise tickets, baggage travel tags, or even planes or cruise ships.

Or check out these suitcase-shaped party invitations that you can order pre-made.

There are several options for effective invitations; some are easier than others. You can hand-make invitations, buy some at a store, or use free party invitations online to email your guests.

Invitations Top Choice

The most creative way to invite someone to a travel-themed party is using a suitcase!

Food and Drinks

You could include in your invite for guests to bring a dish from the region or country of your theme, or if you want your guests to be impressed, organize catering according to your theme.

Whether it’s Guatemalan or Central American cuisine , Asian or European cuisine, if you plan well and hire a professional caterer, or even if you prepare the food yourself, your party will surely be memorable.

Regarding drinks, there are many options to suit your travel theme. You could include wine from France, sake from Japan, or one of my personal favorites, cocktails like the Michelada from Colombia .

Get Creative with Decorations

There are many great ideas for travel-themed party decorations .  If you focus on a specific region or country, you can base your decor on that.

If it’s a general travel-themed party, you can print out or buy travel posters, display food in open suitcases, use maps as placemats, and make airplane cupcake toppers on sticks.

You can use helium party balloons or make a cardboard train centerpiece out of old shoe boxes, really, the ideas are endless, and you are limited only by your imagination.

If you are throwing a party in your garden, you may consider getting an excellent garden furniture set .

Play Travel-Themed Games

You can adapt many well-known party games to a travel theme. Instead of pinning the tail on the donkey, you can pin a remarkable landmark on a map.

There are games like ‘Twenty Questions’ where the correct answer must be a destination.

If you like drawing games, write travel-themed words on index cards, try to draw the word, and encourage other guests to guess.

You could also have fun by teaching and learning dances from other countries or asking travel-themed trivia questions.

Word games are a great option also for example, one player names a city or country, and the next player must name a city or country that begins with the last letter of the first guest’s choice.

Use your creativity, and maybe you can create games everyone can enjoy or use some of the best road trip games !

Wrapping it All Up

There are many different directions you can go with a travel-themed party.

In this article, we hope to have provided a really great place to start by first picking a travel-related theme and narrowing it down a bit to a specific region or country or even to a particular type of travel like backpacking or cruise vacations that can also serve as themes for the party.

From invitations to decor and food and drink, you now have an excellent place to start planning your travel-themed party so you can set a date and start sending out invites!

Maybe you will be so inspired after hosting this first party that you have more in the future.

No matter what happens, you will have a memorable party you will never forget. And you are in the best place to start planning again in the future for another party, thanks to this article.

At Home Travel Themed Party Ideas

A lot of us are spending more time at home than ever and not traveling as much as we’d like to (or is that just me?). In lieu of actual travel, I decided to throw a travel themed party for my family every couple weeks to feed our wanderlust.

We started with a Swiss picnic, a Swissnic if you will, in our backyard. Next up was Japan night. We rolled our own sushi and made miso soup. We regularly have Mexico night with tostadas, enchiladas, or burritos or Italian night with homemade ravioli or lasagna.

I asked some of my travel blogging friends for their travel party ideas and they shared some great recipes you can use.

The food is the main focus, but we’ve also added some travel party decorations and other activities to bring home the travel-at-home feeling.

The Set Up – Travel Theme Decor

No matter where you plan to travel during this travel dinner party, it’s nice to have some themed decor. We like to pull out souvenirs from our travels, if we have them.

To add to the festivities, it can be fun to make your own travel themed centerpieces, flagging, or wall art. Our son likes making flags, and put together a Swiss flag for our Swissnic.

You can also consider some general travel theme decorations like globes, airplanes, or flagging. Here are a few of our favorite travel party decorations.

  • travel themed hanging swirl decorations
  • Adventure Awaits banner
  • travel party photo booth props
  • biodegradable globe balloons

Travel Theme Party Ideas

We’ll show you how to make:

  • Swiss Raclette
  • Indian Chana Masala
  • Irish Tea Party
  • Mexican Fish Tacos
  • French Charcuterie Platter
  • Peruvian Sopa Criolla

Switzerland Themed Travel Party – Raclette Grill

red peppers and bread on a raclette grill at a swiss themed party

Raclette is an alpine cheese popular in Switzerland. In this case, it’s melted under a raclette grill while food is cooking on top. It’s a little like fondue in the sense that you are putting melted cheese and other food together, but our kids like it a lot more because there are not other ingredients mixed in the cheese like wine and spices.

We first learned about raclette from our friends at WorldTowning . Our families met up in France and they hosted a Swiss-style raclette dinner in their patio. Once of the fun things about a dinner like this is that everyone gets to participate in the grilling and since it takes awhile you get to spend some serious time relaxing and chatting.

You’ll need a raclette grill for this recipe. We bought one upon our to the U.S. after our year in Europe and love it. It’s great for dinner parties, book club dinners, and birthday parties.

You can grill whatever you want on a raclette grill; some things are more traditionally Swiss than others, but we like to make it our own.

This is the raclette grill we have – I’m sure others are good, too, but I can vouch for this one.

Ingredients

Traditional

  • Raclette cheese (Gruyère or Dubliner also work)

Non-Traditional, but yummy

  • Red peppers
  • Anything else you want to grill

Instructions

Quarter and boil the potatoes until they are cooked, but not soft.

Marinate the mushrooms. I like a shiitake salad dressing for the marinade, but it’s not very Swiss.

Slice the veggies and bread.

Lay everything on platters and place the cheese on a cutting board with a knife.

Everyone can put their cheese in the trays and food on the grill as they wish. we’ve found the cheese melts faster than the food cooks, so maybe hold off on the cheese until the food is mostly cooked.

Place veggies and bread on your plate and scrape or racler the cheese onto the other food.

Dry white wine, pickled foods (cornichons or gherkins, olives, pickled onions), cured meats (ham, salami, prosciutto), Swiss chocolate ( Toblerone or MilkBoy are easy to find)

Other Switzerland Themed Party Activities

Bellies full of cheese and wine, settle into the couch for a movie set in Switzerland:

  • Star Wars III: Revenge of the Sith (Princess Leia’s home planet of Alderaan is actually the the mountains around Grindelwald)
  • James Bond: On Her Majesty’s Secret Service
  • James Bond: Goldfinger
  • Tom Brown’s Angels and Demons

India Themed Travel Party – Instant Pot Chana Masala

— Preethi from Local Passport Family

indian chickpea curry for an Indian themed party

This is a common Indian curry that I ate regularly growing up. Having it in India made by my aunties felt so comforting and welcoming. I love reliving those flavors in my own home now!

  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 large onion diced
  • 3 cloves garlic minced
  • 2 t ground ginger
  • 4 t ground cumin
  • 4 t ground coriander
  • 2 t ground turmeric
  • 2 t garam masala
  • 2 t paprika I like to use smoked paprika
  • 1 28oz can of diced tomatoes
  • 2 c dried chickpeas
  • 3 T lemon juice

Turn  Instant Pot on sauté setting and add oil. When hot, add onions. Cook until translucent, stirring often.

Add garlic and cook for another minute until golden.

Pour in all the spices and toast for about 1 minute, stirring. Do not let burn.

Include tomatoes and dried chickpeas and stir until well coated.

Pour in water and change setting to manual high pressure. Make sure vent is sealed and set to cook for 50 minutes.

Release pressure manually when done cooking, and add lemon juice and additional salt if needed.

Eat with rice or flatbread (naan, roti, and poori are all good choices). Curry will be even better the next day (should it last that long), and also freezes well.

Other India Themed Party Activities

We love to think back on our trip to India and look at our photos. And it’s always fun video calling grandparents during the meal!

Ireland Themed Travel Party – Tea Party

— Marta from Mama Loves Ireland

Irish tea party

One of the highlights of all our family trips to Ireland are the pit stops for tea and cake! Ireland has a great tea tradition, tea being very much the most common and popular drink in the country, and most attractions have lovely tea shops with home made cakes and treats.

Maybe the most memorable of all our Irish tea experiences however was a fabulous afternoon tea we had at the Shelbourne hotel in Dublin. It was a long affair with multi-tiered trays, mini cake bites and small sandwiches in one of the most elegant hotels in Dublin: an unforgettable experience!

Making an Irish tea party at home is easy.

Ingredients and Instructions

  • The main thing you need is, of course, tea. You don’t need a fancy china set for this however, we find that having nice cups out makes the whole experience more fun. The most common varieties of tea in Ireland are called Barry’s and Lyons , they are black teas, and they are always served with milk and, if you like it, sugar.
  • For treats, our favorites are brownies, Irish scones, Irish apple cake, and banana bread. The Irish apple cake in particular is delicious with tea: it is a sponge type of cake or a ‘bread’ as they say and scones are also lovely. Irish ones are usually made with a lot of lovely Irish butter and serve with cream and jam.

Other Ireland Themed Party Activities

For the Irish feel to be complete, we like to put Irish music in the background (RTE kids radio is Irish and free online) and sometimes we even make Ireland inspired crafts to decorate the table. Flags and shamrocks are easy to make with paper and crayons and add to the atmosphere!

Mexico Themed Travel Party – Fish Tacos

— Katja from Globetotting

Mexican themed travel party

We lived in Mexico City for nearly six years and tacos quickly became part of our staple diet. Of the many types of tacos that we ate regularly, none could quite compare to fish tacos from our local taqueria, Tres Galeones .

Since moving back to the UK two years ago, we have been attempting to recreate an authentic Mexican taco – with some success!

  • 4 skinless fillets of firm white fish. We use cod.
  • 1 tsp ground cumin
  • 1/2 tsp paprika
  • 1 tsp sea salt
  • 1 garlic glove, minced
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 8 soft corm tortillas

Cut the fish fillets in half lengthways (so that they look like long fingers) and place in a roasting tin. Mix together the spices and sprinkle over the fish. Mix the garlic and olive oil and a bowl and drizzle over the fish. Road in the oven for approximately 10 minutes.

The tacos are best served with pickled onion (cut a red onion into thin slices and coat in lime juice), avocado, fresh coriander and chipotle mayonnaise.

Other MexicoThemed Party Activities

Since lockdown, we’ve taken to having virtual Friday night travels. Our first trip took us back to Mexico where we ate fish tacos and dressed up!

France Themed Travel Party – French Charcuterie Platter

— Chelsea from Pack More Into Life

french themed travel party

Good food is at the heart of all French people. The French markets are full of delectable delights with fresh cheeses, delectable fruits and meats. Bakeries offer a plethora of breads to delight any palate.

The variety can suit your taste.

Start with at least two cured meats. Dry cured sausage and salami are favorites. Then add 3-4 varieties of cheese: a hard cheese, a soft cheese, a blue cheese and perhaps an aged cheese. Add a fresh baguette (warmed in the oven), picked vegetables, olives, fresh jam, nuts and ground mustard.

Other France Themed Party Activities

To continue the French theme, watch the Disney movie Ratatouille , create your own stained glass Notre Dame windows, make lavender soap, and go on a bike ride for your very own Tour de France. Find tutorials for these activities and more travel themed activities for kids here.

Peru Themed Travel Party – Sopa Criolla

— Ariana from World of Travel With Kids

peru themed travel party

In Peru most local restaurants offer a cheaper fixed Menu of the Day consisting of a soup, main course, and then dessert. So you get to try many different typical meals by ordering the Menu of the Day , which I am sure is how I first tried Sopa Criolla / Sopa a la Minuta for the first time.

Translated it means beef noodle soup which explains why it is suitable for the kids – in fact they love it! Many other Peruvian soups feature big chunks of grisly (!) meat or chicken and are on the chewy side with big beans and lots of potato.

Sopa Criolla has ground beef making it delicious for the kids – and something that is easy and delicious to make when at home.

As I lived in Peru for over 10 years, this is a recipe that I can make from memory. The key ingredient is Aji Panca – which you can’t buy in Australia.

  • freeze dried chili flakes from the supermarket in moderation in lieu of aji panca , works well (though doesn’t taste exactly the same). Or purchase on Amazon .
  • minced beef
  • 2 Tbl tomato paste
  • 4 C beef stock
  • angel hair pasta
  • 1 egg/person

Fry onion, garlic, aji panca or chili peppers, and oregano until soft. Then add minced beef and about 2 tablespoons of tomato paste.

Once cooked, add beef stock and then angel hair pasta, which cooks really quickly.

Technically you are supposed to poach your eggs before putting them into the soup and serving… but I just break the egg into the soup and let it cook that way. It is such an easy dish that the kids can help make it as its quick and easy.

Other Peru Themed Party Activities

If you are looking for a movie the Emperor’s New Groove is set in Peru with the lead character named Cusco! While not technically correct, the kids really enjoyed it.

You can also read Peru books for kids .

Note about the picture: My mother and I, along with my two kids are eating a Peruvian delicacy – guinea pig (cuy) plus a big plate of noodles (tallarin). Needless to say, we have never eaten guinea pig at home!

How to throw a travel themed party

How to Throw An Amazing Travel-Themed Party

travel party means

Once upon a time in what seems like a previous life, I spent a decade working in the event industry, mostly as an event stylist. It was only natural that when someone asked me about travel themed party ideas, I had a lot of thoughts on the matter. Here I walk you through throwing a travel-inspired bash from the invitation, all the way through to the party favours.

More than just travel

Ok, you’ve decided on a travel theme but there are a few more things to consider first. There are lots of different aspects of travel to channel and it will help to narrow your theme down to something more specific. Think about who or what the party is celebrating and let that guide you. Is it a bridal shower, retirement, birthday or going away party? If so, you may need to consider that special someone’s age, gender, interests and style along with that of your guests. Here are just a few ways to interpret a travel theme:

  • Vintage travel – Think old maps and leather suitcases, muted pastels and brass compasses.
  • Transport – Planes, trains… Imagine a glamorous Orient Express do, or a whimsical hot air balloon theme taking you anywhere you dream.
  • Focus on a destination – Create a Hawaiian Luau to a Mexican Fiesta, an Irish shindig to a French-themed fete.
  • National flags – Casual vexillologists will love showing off their knowledge of world flags, a great conversation-starting theme.
  • Around the World in Cocktails – A cocktail party exploring the origins of your favourite mixed beverages.
  • Travel Trivia Tournament – Can be a romantic night for two or extend to a bigger group of adults.

Travel themed party invitations

The key to a great themed party is weaving the theme into every aspect, start to finish. Sometimes it’s easy and obvious, other times it takes a little more creativity. Let’s begin with invitation ideas. Your invitation will set the tone for the entire party, so consider how it works in with the overall look and feel. Don’t forget to list the following on your invites:

  • Date and time
  • Theme (especially if it’s fancy dress)
  • Dress code (as above)
  • Set catering expectations, don’t leave your guests hanging wondering if they should eat beforehand or worse, leaving early because they’re hungry (e.g. finger food provided).
  • What people may bring along (e.g. BYO favourite alcoholic beverage, or bring along a dessert to share)
  • RSVP date and contact details (ask people to mention any dietary restrictions e.g. vegetarian, gluten free etc)

Food & drink

First, consider the style of the party including the number of guests, space and budget. Is it going to be standing room only, in which case you’ll provide finger food on trays or set up a buffet? Will it be a more intimate, sit down affair? Do you have the seating required? Also, are you buying or making the food or a combination of both? What are your capabilities?

Now get creative. Are you going to theme the food around a particular destination? Alternatively, maybe you go for regular party food, but present it with a travel twist such as aeroplane cake toppers or served on map lined tray. Here are some examples of both:

When decorating for a party, you can go from 0 to 100 in less than 10 seconds, so make sure you have a budget in mind. Think about things you already own and can repurpose, or if you’re buying something new, how can you use it again? Are you a crafty DIY type who loves to make your own custom pieces, or do you just want something simple and out of the box? Here are travel themed party decoration ideas:

Here are a few sources for travel themed party decor:

Etsy are especially great for vintage-style travel party decor using maps to create items like bunting, favours and seating charts. Amazon is also towing the trend for vintage map-inspired travel party decorations. Oriental Trading takes a little more scouring to unearth their classier travel themed decorations, but there are some great pieces like world globe balloons and pastel suitcases for centrepieces.

For destination themes, check out Meri Meri for tropical decor ,  Coterie for Italian-tile inspired vibes and Sweet LuLu for a Mexican fiesta.

Don’t forget your local thrift store, Facebook Marketplace, eBay and for basic items like vases, candle holders etc. You might find a couple offloading once-used wedding decor!

Setting the mood

Music! You must have music. Create a playlist in advance so on the day, you just have to hit play. Lighting is another sure-fire way to set a mood. If your soiree is a daytime outdoor bbq, you need not be concerned. However, don’t forget lighting for night events, whether it’s lowering the lights and sparking up some candles on the dinner table or creating a festive mood with something a little more disco-esque. Get my Spotify Travel Party Playlist here…

Travel themed party favors

Do you want to send guests home with a memento? What is the age range or interests of the group? Taking home a polaroid from the photo booth might be enough, or you might want to send kids home with something sugary.

travel party means

Take the time to write a short note or send a quick email to thank guests for coming, especially if they brought a gift. If you are writing a physical note, think about using a postcard or a design that will echo your invitation to round out the event.

Enjoy throwing your travel themed party, and don’t forget to drop your thoughts, questions and ideas in the comments below.

Passport to Fun: Travel-Inspired Party Ideas

Passport to Brazil

How to decorate : Beautify your space with bright lanterns, banners, and strands of lights. McGrath also pays homage to the country harvest by decorating with colorful straw hats, wicker baskets, and hay bales. You can even pull out your autumn scarecrows for this event. “A bonfire is a must,” adds McGrath, “It keeps the bad spirits far from the lands of harvest.”

What to serve : Stick to a classic picnic-style menu, as simple as corn on the cob and hot dogs. McGrath also suggests abundant quantities of Brazilian sweets including pacoca (peanut butter candy), pe de moleque (peanut bars), sweet popcorn, brigadeiro (chocolate fudge), canjica (sweet corn pudding), and caramel apples. Adults will enjoy sipping on quentao (a Brazilian cider-like spiced tea) or batidas (tropical fruits cocktails). Check out recipes on the blog Flavors of Brazil .

What to wear : Festa Junina, like Brazilian Carnival, requires guests to party in costume; for this event, outfits pay tribute to the origins of Brazilians' farming heritage and beloved country music. Males dress up as farm boys with large straw hats and plaid shirts. Females pull their hair in pigtails, paint freckles on their face, and wear red-checkered dresses or peasant dresses.

What to do : Since the Festa Junina typically includes guests of all ages, plan a few games that bring out the kid in everyone: musical chairs, egg-on-a-spoon relay, and a sack race. A typical "quadrilha" square dance may be harder to pull off, but make sure to download songs that give your guests a feel for what they're missing. Friends might even improvise their own dances once the party kicks into high gear. Search iTunes for "Festa Junina," or look for these traditional songs: Pula Fogueira , Capelinha de Melao , and Quadrilha Brasileira .

Passport to France

When party stylist Chris Nease was planning her husband's birthday, she revisited a trip the couple had taken to France. The occasion gave them a chance to celebrate their love of French culture and cuisine.

How to decorate : Nease decided to avoid obvious decoration options, like miniature Eiffel towers, and aim for a more authentic Parisian feel. She created a "shabby chic" European ambiance in her backyard, using eclectic antique items strategically staged around her yard. To create a bar area, she built her own pipe-and-drape system on which she hung curtains as well as empty, antique-looking picture frames. (Instructions are available at her site celebrationsathomeblog.com .)

She also emptied a small, antique dresser and used it as a wine and champagne station, with glasses peeking out of the empty drawers and bottles perched in garden urns. Other decorative items, such as vintage suitcases, globes, pomander balls, and French books gave an old-world feel to food tables, while old-fashioned frames and cafe-style chalkboards listed menu items. Nease created a simple banner by clothes-pinning personal photographs from her French vacation to a twine rope.

What to serve : French wine and champagne makes the perfect starting point for an elegant cocktail or dessert party. Nease stuck with pretty, easy-to-eat finger foods like goat cheese tarts with caramelized onions, brie tarts with strawberry preserves, and mini quiches. She also created snack cones — filled with French fries — out of decorative scrapbook paper embellished with fleur-de-lis.

A dessert table featured fruit tartlets , palmiers, chocolate-espresso butter cream macarons and the pièce de résistance: a croquembouche (tower of pastries) that Nease fashioned from store-bought cream puffs .

What to send home : Add a classy touch with a special party favor. Nease embellished simple brown paper bags with scrapbook paper, monogram tags and a fleur-de-lis wax seal. She filled the bags with monogrammed items like note pads and note cards. Other possible take-homes could include lavender sachets and soaps or a sampling of French chocolates with French roast coffee — just enough for a petite pour.

Passport to Greece

Lori Lange, the author of the Recipe Girl cookbook and blog, loves the food and flavors of Greece: lamb, garlic, lemon, eggplant, and feta. So when it was her turn to host the neighborhood’s gourmet get-together, she settled on a Greek theme. Opa!

How to decorate : Lange used the colors of the Greek flag, blue and white, accented with shiny gold to fashion a table worth of the gods. Blue and white dishes, tablecloth, and glass beads set the backdrop. She then created centerpieces using pieces of gold lame from the fabric store and vases filled with branches of golden-yellow blossoms and rosemary.

What to wear : For a playful crowd, encourage guests to wear togas, or offer artificial laurel wreaths to wear on their heads. If your group isn’t quite as spirited, Lange suggests accessorizing outfits with flashy gold jewelry.

What to serve : Start the evening with appetizers that draw on Greece’s signature ingredients. Lange served marinated eggplant with capers and mint; goat cheese with olives, lemon and thyme, served on crisp rosemary flatbread; and dried fig souvlaki — all huge hits with her guests. She also concocted Greek mojitos , a twist on the classic Cuban mixed drink, which she made with Greek metaxa in place of rum.

A Greek meal traditionally centers around a signature lamb dish, like a roast or chops. If you’re not a lamb lover or it’s too pricey for your budget, look for a chicken recipe that calls for copious amounts of lemon, garlic , and rosemary. Lange’s side dishes included a spinach, feta, and pine nut tart; roasted garbanzo beans and garlic with Swiss chard (“a surprise favorite,” she says); and Greek potatoes with lemon vinaigrette. (All Lange’s recipes are available at recipegirl.com .)

What to do : Let your guests test their knowledge of Greek history, geology, and mythology with homemade trivia cards distributed at each place setting. Go to quizlet.com and search for “Greek” to find plenty of interesting factoids.

Passport to Asia

Party stylist Chris Nease says ideas for parties hit her at the strangest times. “There’s always an inspiration piece to get juices flowing. This time it was little, red takeout boxes,” she says. What followed was an Asian-fusion dinner party spotlighting many of the flavors Nease and her friends love. How to decorate : Nease stuck with Chinese color scheme of red, black, and gold, drawing on the takeout boxes that inspired the event. For the table centerpiece, she used a bamboo runner, then wrapped a bamboo placemat around a cylindrical vase and filled it with bamboo fronds and curly willow branches. Other accent pieces included Japanese fans, black and white river rocks, a Buddha statue she found at a discount store and a Japanese teapot her husband brought home from a business trip. Nonetheless, Nease cautions to keep the look uncluttered. “Asian decor is very sleek and minimalist,” she says. (To view her table, visit her site celebrationsathomeblog.com .)

What to serve : Asian restaurants have finger foods down to an art, so kick off the party with a selection of snacks made at home or ordered from a favorite eatery. Eggrolls, dumplings, sushi, and potstickers appeal to a wide crowd; if you want to get adventurous, consider Thai-inspired shrimp or edamame hummus on rice crackers. Instead of standard cocktails, serve sake or soju (a Korean rice beverage) or offer a selection of Asian beers, such as Sapporo or Tsingtao.

For her main meal, Nease served chicken satay and Asian noodle salad . For dessert? Chinese fortune cookies, of course — served in little red takeout boxes. Don’t forget to end the meal with a steaming pot of green tea.

What music to play : Search online radio stations, such as pandora.com , spotify.com , or grooveshark.com to find an Asian music mix you enjoy. Pandora.com, for instance, offers an “Asian Instrumentals” station whose artists give traditional Chinese and Japanese instruments a smoother, jazz-like sound.

Passport to Portugal

When her mother traveled back to Lisbon to research her family’s Portuguese roots, Lori Lange caught the heritage bug. She pored over photographs from her mother’s travels and paged through David Leite’s cookbook, The New Portuguese Table , for ideas and inspiration. Then she threw a dinner party to share this newfound knowledge with friends.

How to decorate : Lange showcased Portugal’s rustic, old-world beauty in her table decorations. She used a red tablecloth and richly patterned runner to create a warm backdrop, then added brown woven placemats reminiscent of Lisbon’s cobblestone streets. She topped off each setting with thick ceramic plates and bowls. Centerpieces included vases filled with wine corks, wrapped in raffia, and adorned with chunky candles, a visual nod to the country’s fine wines. (Visit recipegirl.com for more photographs.)

What to serve : “When I put on a party, I like to make it as authentic as possible,” says Lange, who even contacted cookbook author Leite to make sure she got the recipes just right. Her menu included appetizers of green olive dip and smoked ham with melon; a Portuguese salad made with green peppers, cucumbers and plum tomatoes; a spicy pork stew with clams and red pepper sauce; and roasted potatoes with smoked sausage and tomatoes. Guests sipped sangria before dinner and sampled Portuguese wines throughout the meal. Lange said guests raved about dessert: an orange cake (bolo de laranja) made with olive oil instead of vegetable oil. For more Portuguese menu options, visit David Leite’s site .

What to do : Lange’s dinner party conversation centered on the Portuguese culture, which Lange could describe from her mother’s travels and her own research. If you want to pre-empt any awkward silences, take it one step further and leave a conversation card with a fun fact about the featured locale at each place setting. “That way everyone can learn something new about the country,” she says. For background music, keep it classical with 12-string guitar legend Carlos Paredes or reach for a more contemporary sound, such as Rodrigo Leão’s O Mundo album.

THESE ADORABLE TRAVEL PARTY DECORATIONS ARE EASY AND SIMPLE!

travel theme party ideas, Great travel theme party ideas include vintage travel theme postcards, suitcase centerpieces, and a floral arrangement with Fuji mums and hydrangeas, they are perfect with blush table linens. Travel party decorations

A travel party theme can work for so many different occasions.

And we’ve got some adorable travel theme decoration ideas to share with you.

Whether you’re planning a graduation party, wedding shower, bachelorette parties, or in this case, a ladies’ golf outing, a travel party can be a lot of fun!

In fact, what’s the first thing we determine when Matt and I start planning an event either professionally or at home?

A great theme not only makes any event more fun and interesting for your guests, it also provides a fantastic roadmap for your décor.

Following simple travel theme party decor ideas will make pulling your tablescape together a breeze!

travel theme party ideas, Great travel theme party ideas include vintage travel theme postcards, suitcase centerpieces, and a floral arrangement with Fuji mums and hydrangeas, they are perfect with blush table linens, great travel party decorations

I recently curated these vintage travel party decorations for a ladies luncheon.

The mood they created was bright, cheerful and elegant … perfect for a great afternoon with friends.

Here’s how I chose each of the elements of my travel theme party decor, step by step:

THE WORLD AWAITS!

These three words are perfect to introduce the travel theme to your guests.

It’s fun and it’s subtle … you don’t want to beat people over the head with the theme.

I found these adorable cocktail napkins that were a perfect starting point.

They offered a delightful color palette from which to build the other elements of the décor.

Great travel theme party ideas include vintage travel theme postcards and suitcase favor holders especially when paired with these adorable The World Awaits napkins and blush and ivory table linens.

Muted pastel shades are so on trend right now. The cocktail napkins were simply ideal for this theme.

The khaki, teal, and yellow in the napkin works perfectly with the champagne and blush cloth table linens.

These colors have been on the runways for several seasons, so it’s only logical they are now frequently making appearances on the “best-dressed” tabletops as well!

Remember, fashion always leads!

PACK YOUR BAGS …

You can’t have a travel theme without a suitcase, right?

While these centerpieces took a little effort, they certainly made a big impact on the table.

And really, they weren’t that difficult to pull together.

I started with the suitcases , of course, which come in a variety of colors.

For this celebration, I thought the gold really went best with the color palate and sophisticated mood I was trying to achieve.

Great travel theme party ideas include vintage travel theme postcards, suitcase centerpieces, and a floral arrangement with Fuji mums and hydrangeas, they are perfect with blush table linens. Travel party decorations, travel theme ideas.

Fuji mums paired with ivory hydrangeas were a perfect flowers to fill these centerpieces.

Hydrangeas are my favorite workhorse for a wide variety of reasons. I turn to them time and time again.

Why do I love them? First, their blooms are large so you don’t need a ton of them to make a nice, full arrangement. That also means you can make your floral dollars go further.

Second, they hold up for a really long time.

You don’t have to worry about them wilting, especially if you care for them properly. Since they are big blooms, they need lots of water.

Finally, hydrangeas are forgiving. If you do screw up and they begin to wilt, you can rescue them with this easy trick .

EVERYONE NEEDS A SOUVENIR, RIGHT?

Great travel theme party ideas include these suitcase favor boxes. Travel party decorations, bachelorette party ideas, wedding shower ideas, vintage travel decor

In addition to the centerpieces, I found these adorable suitcase favor boxes.

While we have begun to emerge from COVID and are more comfortable gathering together, a few things have permanently changed when it comes to events.

One of these is party favors.

Loose, unwrapped candies in bags or boxes are definitely a thing of the past.

Think about the assembly … yuck.

These suitcase gift boxes, which contained wrapped Hershey’s kisses , were an ideal option.

PICK YOUR DESTINATION …

One of the easiest (and in this case cutest) ways to incorporate your theme is by simply dressing up your food.

These travel theme picks were the perfect choice for our desserts.

Travel themed picks including a map, plane and suitcase inserted into chocolate cupcakes are a great and simple idea to incorporate a travel theme.

DON’T GO OVERBOARD.

The simple, monochromatic color palette of the table linens is by design.

There are a lot of things to look at on this tablescape.

If there were too many colors, it would be overwhelming.

I limited my linen color palette choices to blush and beige.

The napkins and the tablecloths were the same color, as were the satin accent cloths.

A travel theme is perfect for a bridal shower, bachelorette party or graduation party. A great theme not only makes any event more fun and interesting for your guests, it also provides a fantastic roadmap for your décor. A suitcase centerpiece is a simple travel theme party decor idea that will make pulling your tablescape together a breeze! We added travel themed scrapbook paper to create more interest. It looks great with these blush table linens.

IT’S ALWAYS BEST TO TRAVEL IN LAYERS …

If I had a dime for every time my mother said that to me!

Not only is this great advice for travel attire, it’s also one of my favorite rules when creating a gorgeous tablescape.

By layering décor and linens, you create excitement and interest on your tabletop.

Since this event was held at a country club, the tables were rather large and measured 72 inches in diameter.

Layering various décor items helped to create some cozy warmth.

In addition, it allowed guests to have something interesting to look at wherever they were seated at the table.

A few of the layering items on this table include:

ADDITIONAL LINENS

Instead of just plopping the centerpiece down on the table and calling it a day, consider softening the look.

One of my favorite tricks is to use a chair sash (yup, those fabric pieces that are typically around chairs at wedding receptions) to create a “nest” on which to place a centerpiece.

This trick also works to hide or conceal the ugly bottoms of candelabras.

Chair sashes are the ideal size and shape for this task! And they are usual cheap to rent!

In addition, extra square napkins were perfect to place inside the suitcase to dress up the flower arrangement.

Both of these additional linen options are really cost effective!

VINTAGE TRAVEL POSTCARDS

By scattering these around the centerpiece I was able to include various destinations from around the world in a cute fashion that stayed within the color palate and added to the theme.

We added vintage travel postcards and yellow and coral tissue poufs to create more interest. It looks great with these blush table linens.

TISSUE POM POMS

I had one worry on this table.

I didn’t want someone to have to stare at the back of the suitcase centerpiece.

Tissue pom poms were the solution. In addition, they added height, texture and color to each of the tables. Perfection!

BASIC WHITE PICTURE FRAMES

I cannot tell you how many times I turn to these simple white picture frames .

Years ago, I picked up several dozen at IKEA and have subsequently used them countless times to hold table numbers, menus, drink recipes and even, well, photos!

Here are some similar frames that would be great for all of the uses I’ve just name. They are easy to store and definitely worth the investment.

SCRAPBOOK PAPER

As I was pulling together this table, I liked it, but thought it needed just a bit more interest.

I found some adorable travel themed scrapbook paper and knew it was just the right touch.

There are lots of super cute, really fun papers out there and they are affordable enough to use just once without any guilt.

They make perfect placemats or in this case, added just the right amount of punch to the center of the table.

No Alcohol, No Problem — How the Travel Industry Is Redefining What It Means to Party

No hangovers here.

travel party means

Whether you call them mocktails, softtails, or zero-proof cocktails, carefully crafted drinks made without alcohol are showing up across the travel industry — and, crucially, are being seen as a first choice, rather than a last resort.

Consider the newly reimagined Ritz Bar at the Ritz Paris , where a quarter of the 16 bespoke cocktails now contain no alcohol. "Partying doesn't mean alcohol all the time anymore," says bar director Romain de Courcy, who estimates that about one in five guests orders a nonalcoholic (NA) cocktail, such as the Fruit, which is made with white grapefruit, passion fruit, clarified coconut, and vanilla.

Helping drive the trend are bar managers like Anna Welker, who's created a number of alcohol-free options at the Revival , a hotel in Baltimore. She's also reconsidered how the drinks are presented. "All it takes is a few lines on a menu to make someone feel like their lifestyle and their choices are not only valid, but celebrated," Welker says. "That's the purest magic that hospitality has to offer."

The Revival is just one of many Hyatt Hotels & Resorts properties putting NA options on bar menus as part of a countrywide Zero Proof, Zero Judgment initiative. "It's taken off better than I thought it would," says Miranda Breedlove, national director of bars for Hyatt's lifestyle division, which oversees the Andaz, JdV by Hyatt, and Thompson Hotel brands, among others.

The reason is threefold: First, Americans are drinking less alcohol, on average, than at any time since 2001, according to Gallup. (Because of the pandemic, the firm didn't poll on the question in 2020.) The trend is also getting a boost from the improved quality of sober spirits produced by brands like Ritual Zero Proof, which uses natural ingredients to mimic the heat of alcohol. Lastly, bartenders are taking presentation to the next level, with unique glassware, flavorful garnishes, and salted or sugared rims. "The goal is to have someone see this and say, 'Oh, what's that? I want one,'" as Breedlove puts it.

"All it takes is a few lines on a menu to make someone feel like their choices are not only valid, but celebrated."

A hotel in Ireland, the Merrion , is going even further by "distilling" its own nonalcoholic gin. Named Artonical, it's flavored with juniper, verbena, and lemongrass. "A nonalcoholic spirit in Dublin sounds like an oxymoron," admits Peter MacCann, Merrion's general manager. "But it's been very well received," he says, even if some guests still express surprise.

Airlines are also beginning to offer more considered spirit-free drinks. Passengers in business-class Mint Suites on JetBlue can opt for cocktails mixed without alcohol on domestic flights, while the latest menu at Delta Sky Club locations across the U.S. now includes two drinks made with a nonalcoholic bottling from Seedlip. And the newly opened Capital One Lounge at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport serves three mocktails alongside a lineup of boozy craft cocktails.

Even cruising, a corner of the travel industry known for uninhibited drinking, has embraced the movement. All-inclusive line Silversea has introduced eight alcohol-free choices on its drink menu, including a Bee Sting Collins made with Pentire botanical NA spirit, ginger beer, juices, and honey syrup. Mocktail consumption aboard Silversea ships was already up 20 percent before the company paused operations because of the pandemic, a rep says. Meanwhile, Virgin Voyages , which launched its first ship, the Scarlet Lady, last year, debuted with NA beverage pairings for multi-course menus at the Test Kitchen.

A version of this story first appeared in the February 2022 issue of Travel + Leisure under the headline No Hangovers Here.

Places were often named after descriptions of the local geography or stemmed from the local ... [+] language.

We often associate places with the historical events we know happened there and sometimes it might be the reason we travel, to commemorate and to visit these sites and museums. Places in the U.S. were also named after cities, towns and people in the old world or sometimes they simply described the geography of a place, often in local languages.

Some are easier than others—Germantown speaks for itself, but this map might help travelers identify other interesting aspects of the places they visit. Syracuse, for example, is known to be named after an Italian port on the Ionion Sea but its name stems from the Phoenician word 'serah', which can be translated as 'to feel ill' because it was located near a swamp.

Many cities are named after people. Think Colombia in South Carolina, named after Christopher Columbus or North Charleston being named after King Charles II. Erie in Pennsylvania is named after the Eriez Indians and there are lots of places still named after generals and colonels.

Some places were named after places in the Old World. Boston is named after a town in England, in the county of Lincolnshire, which itself was named after the patron saint of boundaries, Botolph, from the 7th century—who in turn became recognised as the patron saint of trade and travel.

Many places are named after the positive qualities of the land, such as Anchorage (a place good for anchoring) and Portland (the land surrounding a harbor). It is thought that Honolulu gets its name from the Hawaiian language, where 'lulu' means calm and 'hono' means port, although its original name was 'Ke ʻAwa O Kou' meaning 'the harbor of the Kou'.

Google Suddenly Reveals Surprise Android Update That Beats iPhone

Ukraine has developed 15 kinds of long range strike drone and has sortied them against russia s oil industry, the walking dead the ones who live episode 5 review another massively disappointing episode.

Boise in Idaho gets its name from the French word 'bois' meaning 'wood', and one of the possible reasons that Buffalo is called Buffalo is because it stemmed from the U.S. pronunciation of the French name 'beau fleuve' meaning 'beautiful river'.

Many more place names though, are named from local languages, often from the geographical features of the place and the rich indigenous heritage. Kansas and Kansas City were named after the Kansa tribe (where the river gets its name) which means 'People of the Southwind'.

It seems that Chicago was named for its scent, its name coming from the quantity of wild garlic found in the area near the lakes and streams, well before the city was established in 1833—possibly named from the Algonquian word 'sheka:ko:heki', meaning 'place of the wild onion'.

Likewise, Minneapolis' name comes from the Sioux words 'minne' for 'water' and 'minnehaha' meaning 'waterfall' plus the Greek word 'polis' that means 'city'. Or think about the city of Topeka in Kansas that many believe translates from the Kansa tribe's use of the Siouan language meaning 'a good place to dig potatoes'.

Legend has it that the city of Baton Rouge in Louisiana was named for the many 'red sticks' that French explorer Pierre Le Moyne d’Iberville found in the area in 1699 that had fish and bear heads attached to them, possibly marking the frontier between the tribes of the Bayou Goula and the Houma. The city of Tampa is also named after sticks—the native Calusa tribe called it 'tansa' meaning 'sticks of fire' in their native Calusa language, because of the lightning that was frequent in the area.

What is a Rave Party and is it illegal? Raves Safety & Guidelines

rave party info

Rave parties have been an attraction since always for all partiers around the world. But what exactly makes these events so popular and unique?

From EDM & Dance to the amazing light shows & weird fashions there are a lot of things that will catch your attention in the raves. In this blog post, we’ll tell you about the origins of rave culture and break down all the key elements that define a true rave party.

Wait, Are you interested in going to a rave party but worried about being safe? Don’t stress! today we’ll also cover all the tips you need to make sure your first rave experience is super fun and secure.

So without further ado, Let’s get started:

What is a Rave Party?

A rave is a gathering of people where electronic dance music and light shows come together to create an energetic, euphoric atmosphere . Raves usually take place in warehouses, clubs or other public spaces – often outdoors – and may be advertised as secretive events that require invitation or friends of invitees to attend.

Music at raves tend to be repetitive and upbeat with genres like house, techno, hardcore, dubstep and alternative typically being played by DJs across the night. The combination of music with dazzling bursts of colorful lights creates an extraordinary party experience unlike any other.

Aside from its soundscape, rave parties are also defined by its fashion – flashy outfits made up of bright colors such as neons can be seen on many revelers who want to show off their own unique style.

Origins and History of Raves

Raves have their origins in the late 1980s , first appearing as underground parties held illegally in secret locations such as warehouses and abandoned buildings . Initially associated with acid house music , rave culture became known for its groundbreaking electronica , innovative DJs , and highly energetic atmosphere .

The magical environment created by rave events led to a global spread of popularity until it reached almost every corner of the world by the end of the 1990s. While initially illegal, raves began to be organized commercially as venues started providing an alternative space for people to dance into the night with no limitation on time or performance restrictions.

As mainstream audiences become increasingly aware of electronic dance music throughout this period, raves began becoming large-scale even reaching festivals that still exist today celebrating that particular subculture all around globe.

Popularity and Appeal of Raves

Rave parties have become a mainstay of youth culture in the last few decades. Attracting thousands of partygoers from all around the world, rave events are often associated with fast-paced electronic music , electric light shows and vibrant dance scenes .

The appeal of raves lies not just in their immense musical culture but also in the values that accompany them such as peace, love, unity and respect – forming a unique community atmosphere unlike any other form of entertainment.

All this attracts people from various walks of life looking to explore new experiences and exchange ideas through dancing.

Furthermore, what makes these enjoyable is how they transcend all boundaries offering something for everyone no matter age or stature allowing them to identify with aspects or interests different than their own.

What Happens in Rave Party

rave party activities

Aside from dancing and music, many activities and elements make up the typical rave party experience:

Music, Dance, and Light Shows

The focal point of any rave is the music played by DJs. Styles spun include:

  • House – The original core rave genre featuring 4/4 beats with samples over top. Deep house for more melodic tracks, or tech house for edgier sounds.
  • Trance – Dreamy, melodic synth tracks with arpeggiated hooks and crescendoing textures to induce trance-like states. Subgenres like psytrance and hard trance provide more intensity.
  • Techno – Distinctly electronic, futuristic-sounding tracks often without vocals and focused on intricately layered machine rhythms.
  • Drum and Bass – Extremely fast tempo range from 170-180 BPM, heavy on aggressive basslines and fast breakbeat rhythms.
  • Dubstep – Dark, grimy tracks driven by booming sub-bass frequencies and strategic tempo shifts known as “drops”.

Visual effects are also key, with lasers, projections, neon/LED lights, strobe lights, and blacklights turning the rave into a multimedia sensory explosion. Exuberant, uninhibited dancing and mixing with fellow ravers completes the social component.

Rave culture and community

Rave culture is a unique social subculture which has been growing in popularity since its inception in the 1980s. It is centered around a shared love of electronic music, dance, and art, with a mission to foster peace, love unity, respect (PLUR), and tolerance.

It emphasizes freedom of expression and acceptance of all genders, races, beliefs, identities – creating an inviting atmosphere for all who choose to join. At rave parties DJs provide soundscapes that bring people together through dancing.

Rave Fashion and Attire:

Rave fashion is an important part of the overall rave experience, inspiring attendees to express themselves in vibrant and creative ways .

Traditionally, ravers wore bright colours and clothes from different eras to make a statement and stand out from the crowd.

Eccentric, creatively DIY costumes are a huge element of rave fashion. Usually people wear the following things:

  • Neon colors – Tees, tutus, crop tops, face/body paint
  • Cyber goggles – LED glasses or steampunk styles
  • Masks and face jewels
  • Furry boots – “Party animals”
  • Tight, revealing clubwear
  • Costumes – Carefree play with identity

Pay attention that along with these fashions comfort is also important since ravers dance all night long. So stretchy, loose clothing that can move around easily works best. Rave fashion is all about being yourself, having fun with what you wear, and dressing for nonstop dancing.

Activities at Rave Parties:

Raves provide space for many forms of creative artistic release:

  • Glowsticking – Dancing with LED glowsticks to enhance hand/arm movements
  • Poi spinning – Twirling lit poi balls attached to strings rhythmically
  • Orbitaling/gloving – Waving hands encased in LED gloves to dazzle
  • Hooping – Spinning and manipulating lit hula hoops
  • VJing – Creating rave visuals and projections in tandem to the music
  • Live painters – Painting immersive images rave-side as entertainment
  • Chill rooms – Spaces to relax, connect, and unwind away from intensity

These activities encourage creative flow and individuality alongside the music. They also allow “play” as a form of escape and blowing off steam through recreation.

What is Rave Party Locations

Early warehouse and field raves took place in ad hoc underground spaces. But today’s events move through more official venues:

Indoor Venues of Rave :

  • Nightclubs – Established clubs transform with rave decor and DJ lineups for mass events
  • Concert Halls – Large venues like sports arenas converted for multi-stage raves
  • Festivals – Raves as part of larger EDM festivals with camping options
  • Private Events – Mansions, lofts, and studios rented for underground rave happenings
  • Abandoned Spaces – Held illegally in vacant lots, closed venues, etc. to mirror old-school raving

Outdoor Venues of Rave :

Many raves take advantage of outdoor locations, especially during summer:

  • Fairgrounds – Offer large open spaces
  • Deserts – Far from noise regulations for all night events
  • Beaches – Picturesque seaside settings
  • Campgrounds – On-site camping built in

Major EDM festivals like Burning Man, Shambhala, and Electric Forest encompass the rave ethos on a huge scale as essentially temporary outdoor cities.

While indoor clubs maintain the dark, surreal atmosphere, outdoor raves focus more on community in natural environments flooded with sunlight and fresh air, almost like spiritual pilgrimages for rave disciples.

Are Rave Parties Dangerous?

Raves walk a fine line between chaotic creativity and risky behavior. While raves offer a powerful communal experience, certain dangers need to be addressed:

Potential Dangers and Concerns

  • Drug/alcohol abuse – High rates of irresponsible, binge drug use
  • Unsafe venues – Risk of hazards in makeshift locations
  • Medical emergencies – Overheating, exhaustion, poisoning, injuries
  • Violence/assault – More common at large events
  • Hearing damage – Prolonged exposure to extreme noise levels
  • Law enforcement – Police shutting down illegal raves

Without proper harm reduction, raves can enable dangerous behavior. And the transience of participants makes monitoring and emergency response tougher.

Prevalence of Drug Use at Rave Parties

A survey of 600 rave attendees found:

  • 60% reported taking ecstasy/MDMA
  • 28% reported taking LSD
  • 17% reported taking amphetamines
  • 5% reported taking ketamine

So while not everyone uses substances, drug use remains widespread. Officials often target raves due to this association. Smart strategies are needed to reduce risks and make raving safer.

Are Rave Parties Legal:

The legality of rave parties can be tricky. Strictly speaking, raves are often not totally “legal” events. They sometimes happen in abandoned warehouses or other spaces without official permission. And drug use is common at raves, even though that’s illegal.

However, many raves now take place in official clubs or concert venues with proper licenses and permits. Promoters work to make them safer, more organized events.

So as long as you’re sticking to legal activities and being responsible, you likely don’t have to worry about police crashing the party. But for underground, renegade raves in sketchy spots? Those can definitely still get shut down.

The bottom line is that raving is usually fine and the authorities won’t bug you, as long as you steer clear of any illegal stuff yourself. Use good judgment and your rave experience will stay on the right side of the law.

How to Prepare for a Rave Party

what is rave party

Provide an adequate preparation plan to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience, by researching the venue’s policies, familiarizing yourself with rave etiquette and ensuring that you bring enough supplies for personal comfort.

Tips for staying safe and comfortable –

  • Stick with friends and support each other at all times. Have designated meeting points if you become separated from your group.
  • If permitted, use safety equipment like glowsticks and protective glasses during flashy light shows.
  • Avoid excessive substance use such as alcohol or drugs, but practice harm reduction by limiting usage and knowing one’s limits beforehand. Never go alone if attending under the influence of any substance .
  • Be mindful of surroundings and leave promptly when feeling unsafe after informing your friends first.
  • Familiarize yourself with proper rave etiquette before arriving – no pushing, shoving, fighting, etc., respect regulations concerning drinking age limitations/drugs consumption strictly held in raves sites premises are taken seriously by law enforcement officers also refrain from dissing DJs or noise level performers on the night event itself-it’s simply rude!.

Hydration and Self-care –

Drink plenty of water leading up to and during the rave. Sports drinks like Gatorade also replenish electrolytes lost from heavy sweating.

Take sitting breaks when needed – don’t feel obligated to go nonstop. Cool off regularly at water stations or chillout rooms. Listen to your body’s limits and rest when exhausted.

Protect hearing by using earplugs when near loud speakers. Wear sunscreen if outdoors.

If consuming drugs, start with a low “test dose” and stay with friends you trust. Only buy from trusted sources rather than random strangers.

Raves are about way more than just dancing all night. They let people connect, express themselves freely, and share a love for electronic music. Sure, some risky stuff can happen at raves if you aren’t careful. But being smart and looking out for each other helps make raving feel welcoming, not dangerous.

If you go in with an open mindset and focus on staying safe, raves can be an awesome way to take a little vacation from your regular life. You’ll have an epic night of forgetting your worries, making new friends, and celebrating life to the fullest. Remember raves create memories that you’ll never forget.

Overview of Travel Insurance Coverage

What does travel insurance cover, what does credit card travel insurance cover, what travel insurance coverage do you need to pay more for, choosing the right travel insurance, what does travel insurance cover frequently asked questions, understanding what travel insurance covers.

Affiliate links for the products on this page are from partners that compensate us (see our advertiser disclosure with our list of partners for more details). However, our opinions are our own. See how we rate insurance products to write unbiased product reviews.

The information for the following product(s) has been collected independently by Business Insider: Chase Freedom Flex℠. The details for these products have not been reviewed or provided by the issuer.

  • Travel insurance is intended to cover risks and financial losses associated with traveling.
  • Coverage can include trip cancellation, baggage protection, medical care, and emergency evacuation.
  • When filing a claim, be specific and comprehensive in your documentation to ease the process.

Whether it's a trip across the world or a trip across the state, having travel insurance provides major relief if things go awry. Flight delays, lost baggage, illness, injuries, and other unforeseen events can disrupt even the best-laid plans. With a major disruption comes the potential for unanticipated expenses.

Travel insurance and the coverage it offers can help keep you protected and save you money in the long run.

Travel insurance policies protect travelers from financial losses should something go wrong during their trip. You can customize which coverages you want to include, and there are several to choose from.

"Common types of coverage include trip cancellation, trip interruption, baggage protection, coverage for medical care if you get sick or hurt during your trip, and emergency medical evacuation," says Angela Borden, a travel insurance expert and product strategist for travel insurance company Seven Corners.

Travel insurance plans offer nonrefundable payments and other trip-related expenses. While monetary compensation is a primary benefit, there is another valuable perk of travel insurance. It can provide peace of mind.

Your specific travel insurance plan (and its terms and conditions) will determine the minutia and specifics of what is covered. As with most other forms of insurance, a general rule of thumb is the more you spend, the better your coverage.

"Travel insurance can be confusing, so it's best to research a reputable company that specializes in travel insurance and has a long history of successfully helping travelers all over the world," says Borden.

Trip cancellation and interruptions

A travel insurance policy can reimburse you for a prepaid, nonrefundable trip if it is canceled for a covered event, such as a natural disaster or a global pandemic.

Trip interruption insurance covers you if you're already on your trip and you get sick, there's a natural disaster, or something else happens. Make sure to check with your travel insurance providers to discuss any inclusions, coverage, and more.

Travel delays and missed connections

Travel delay insurance coverage provides reimbursement for any expenses you incur when you experience a delay in transit over a minimum time. Reimbursements can include hotels, airfare, food, and other related expenses.

Medical emergencies and evacuations

Typically, US healthcare plans are not accepted in other countries. So travel insurance with medical coverage can be particularly beneficial when you are abroad. Medical coverage can also help with locating doctors and healthcare facilities.

Medical transportation coverage will also pay for emergency evacuation expenses such as airlifts and medically-equipped flights back to the US. Out of pocket, these expenses can easily amount to tens of thousands of dollars. Certain plans may even transport you to a hospital of choice for care.

Travel insurance generally does not include coverage for pre-existing conditions. That said, you can obtain a pre-existing condition waiver, which we will talk about later.

Baggage and personal belongings

Most airlines will reimburse travelers for lost or destroyed baggage, but be prepared for limitations. Travel insurance plans will typically cover stolen items, such as those stolen out of a hotel room. This may not include expensive jewelry, antiques, or heirloom items. Typically, airlines have a few days to recover your bag.

In the meantime, you can make a claim to pay for items like certain toiletries and other items you need to pick up. If your bag is truly lost or you don't get it for an extended period, you can file a true lost baggage claim.

A major perk on several travel credit cards is embedded credit card travel insurance . Typically, you will need to use the specific card for the transaction (at least with partial payment) for travel coverage to kick in.

Each card has specific rules on what exactly is covered. But one of the industry leaders is the $550-per-year Chase Sapphire Reserve credit card. Here's a snapshot of what is covered with this specific card:

  • Baggage delay: up to $100 reimbursed per day for up to five days if a passenger carrier delays your baggage by more than six hours.
  • Lost and damaged baggage: up to $3,000 per passenger per trip, but only up to $500 per passenger for jewelry and watches and up to $500 per passenger for cameras and other electronic equipment.
  • Trip delay reimbursement: up to $500 per ticket if you're delayed more than six hours or require an overnight stay.
  • Trip cancellation and interruption protection: up to $10,000 per person and $20,000 per trip for prepaid, nonrefundable travel expenses.
  • Medical evacuation benefit: up to $100,000 for necessary emergency evacuation and transportation when on a trip of five to 60 days and traveling more than 100 miles from home.
  • Travel accident insurance: accidental death or dismemberment coverage of up to $100,000 (up to $1,000,000 for common carrier travel).
  • Emergency medical and dental benefits: up to $2,500 for medical expenses (subject to a $50 deductible) when on a trip arranged by a travel agency and traveling more than 100 miles from home.
  • Rental car coverage: primary coverage for damages caused by theft or collision up to $75,000 on rentals of 31 days or fewer

More protections are included with cards with an annual fee, but there are exceptions. The no-annual-fee Chase Freedom Flex, for instance, includes up to $1,500 per person (and up to $6,000 per trip) in trip cancellation and trip interruption coverage.

However, there are some differences between credit card travel coverage and obtaining coverage from a third party.

"Credit card coverage does not typically provide travel medical benefits," Borden says. "For protection if you get sick or hurt while traveling, you'll want a travel insurance plan with medical coverage."

Whether you get your travel insurance in a standalone policy or through a credit card, it's important to review your plan details carefully. In either case, there may be exclusions and other requirements such as deadlines when filing a claim, Borden notes.

Knowing what travel insurance doesn't cover is as important as knowing what it does cover.

"Travelers should understand that travel insurance benefits come into play only if a covered reason occurs," Borden says. Most standard travel insurance plans won't reimburse you for the following:

Cancel for any reason (CFAR)

Cancel-for-any-reason travel insurance covers a trip cancellation for any reason, not just a covered event. your standard benefits won't kick in unless it's a covered event. For instance, you'll be reimbursed simply for changing your mind about taking a trip.

That said, CFAR travel insurance is not without its downsides. For one, it's more expensive than traditional insurance, and most CFAR policies will only reimburse you for a percentage of your travel expenses. Additionally, CFAR policies aren't available for annual travel insurance .

You can find our guide on the best CFAR travel insurance here.

Foreseen weather events

Sudden storms or unforeseen weather events are typically covered by standard travel insurance plans. There are exceptions to be aware of. For example, an anticipated and named hurricane will not be covered.

Medical tourism

If you're going to travel internationally for a medical procedure or doctor's visit, your travel insurance plan will not cover the procedure itself. Most medical travel plans also won't cover you if something goes wrong with your procedure.

Pre-existing conditions and pregnancy

Those with specific pre-existing conditions, such as someone with diabetes and needing more insulin, will not be covered by most plans. In addition, pregnancy-related expenses will likely not be covered under most plans.

That said, you can obtain a pre-existing condition waiver for stable conditions. In order to obtain a wavier, you will need to purchase travel insurance within a certain time frame from when you booked your trip, usually two to three weeks, depending on your policy.

Extreme sports and activities

Accidents occurring while participating in extreme sports like skydiving and paragliding will typically not be covered under most plans. However, many plans offer the ability to upgrade to a higher-priced version with extended coverage.

Navigating claims and assistance

When a trip goes awry, the first thing you should do is document everything and be as specific as possible with documentation. This will make the claims process easier, as you can substantiate and quantify your financial losses due to the delay.

For example, your flight home has been delayed long enough to be covered under your policy, you'll want to keep any receipts from purchases made while waiting. For instances where your luggage is lost, you will need to file a report with local authorities and document all the items you packed.

Cancellation protection also requires meticulous attention to detail. If you're too sick to fly, you may need to see a doctor to prove your eligibility. If an airline cancels a flight, you'll also need to document any refunds you received as travel insurance isn't going to reimburse you for money you've already gotten back.

Part of the benefit of CFAR insurance is the reduced paperwork necessary to file a claim. You'll still need to document your nonrefundable losses, but you won't have to substantiate why you're canceling a trip.

Each plan should be personalized to meet the insured party's needs. Some travelers prefer to stick to the bare minimum (flight cancellation benefits through the airline). Others want a comprehensive plan with every coverage possible. Before you buy anything, set your destination. Are there any travel restrictions or changes pending? Does your destination country require emergency or other medical coverage?

If the destination airport is known for lost or delayed luggage, travelers should keep important items in carry-ons. Lost or delayed luggage coverage protects insured parties in the event of a significant delay or total loss.

Second, check current credit card travel benefits to avoid redundancies. Savvy travelers don't need to pay for the same coverage twice.

Finally, consider your individual needs. Do you have a chronic medical condition, or do you feel safe with emergency-only medical coverage? Keep in mind, this does not include coverage for cosmetic surgery or other medical tourism. Do you have a budget limit for travel insurance? Asking and answering these important questions will help every traveler find the right product.

Most travel insurance plans are simple, and Business Insider's guide to the best travel insurance companies outlines our top picks. Remember, read your policy and its specifics closely to ensure it includes the items you need coverage for.

No one likes to dwell on how a trip might not go as planned before even leaving. However, at its core, travel insurance provides peace of mind as you go about your trip. While the upfront cost may seem significant, when you compare it to the potential expenses of a canceled flight, emergency evacuation, or a hefty medical bill, it's a small price to pay in the grand scheme of things.

Coverage for pandemics vary from policy to policy. Some travel insurance companies have specific provisions for pandemic-related cancellations, while others may exclude them entirely.

Sports injuries are often covered under travel insurance, but high-risk or adventure sports might require additional coverage or a special policy.

Travel advisories have different effects on your travel insurance depending on your policy. Traveling to a country already under travel advisory may invalidate your coverage, but if you're already traveling when a travel advisory is announced, you may be covered.

Travel insurance usually covers the cost of emergency medical evacuations to the nearest suitable medical facility, and sometimes back to your home country, if necessary.

Many travel insurance policies provide coverage for the cost of replacing lost or stolen passports during a trip.

Travel Exemption Role In Travelling Party Meaning

What is role in travelling Party mean? Do I need a travel exemption to leave Australia? Can I get an exemption to travel to Sydney?

What is role in travelling Party mean?

Usually when planning a trip, you would include any travelling companions in your arrangements. A travelling party is defined as you and any travelling companion who has agreed to accompany you for at least 50% of the duration of your trip. This means that if you are going on a two-week holiday with someone else, they must be committed to staying with you for at least one week of the holiday in order for them to be considered part of your travelling party. Having a travelling companion can make trips a lot more enjoyable and easier to manage, which makes it important that all members of the group are included in the plan from the start. Not only does this ensure everyone knows where they’re going and when, but also gives each person an opportunity to contribute ideas about what activities or attractions should be visited during the journey. Travelling together means sharing experiences, memories, and stories - something that no solo traveller will ever forget!

Do I need a travel exemption to leave Australia?

While Australia has reopened its borders to unvaccinated Australians and permanent residents, there are still several regulations that those travelling must follow. Starting from the 6th of July 2022, all citizens and permanent residents who have not received a vaccination against Covid-19 will be able to leave and enter Australia without having to apply for individual travel exemptions. Furthermore, people entering or leaving the country won't have to take a pre-departure test in order to prove they don't have the virus either. Lastly, cruise vessels will now also be allowed into Australian territory after being denied entry for over a year due to safety concerns about the spread of coronavirus on ships. All these measures come as part of an effort by the Australian government to slowly but surely return life back to normal following over 12 months of restrictions due to Covid-19.

Can I get an exemption to travel to Sydney?

It is no longer necessary to apply for a travel exemption, regardless of vaccination or citizenship status. If you are looking for more information on the state or territory-specific travel restrictions in place, then use the healthdirect Restriction Checker . This tool provides up-to-date and accurate information regarding what activities are permitted and which ones are not allowed in your locality. By using this checker, you can ensure that you have all the relevant facts and figures before making any decisions about travelling. Furthermore, it is easy to use and can be accessed from anywhere with an internet connection!

What should I write in my travel exemption?

The traveller's details include a full name, date of birth, visa type and number, passport number as well as a proposed residential address and phone number in Australia. The purpose of this information is to explain why the traveller should be granted an exemption from any restrictions. In addition to providing these details, it is also important to provide a supporting statement which provides evidence as to how the traveller meets one of the grounds for an exemption. This may include presenting evidence that demonstrates how their travel supports Australia’s economic recovery or communication about their work in essential services such as health care and medical research that can’t be completed remotely or other compelling reasons for travelling.

Are you willing to travel as part of your role?

Not only am I willing to travel, but I actually enjoy it! While there are certain commitments that might restrict me from traveling every weekend, I am more than happy to travel each week if that is what is necessary. Could you please tell me about the amount of traveling that would be expected of me?

How long are travel exemptions valid?

If you lodge a Travel Exemption prior to 9th February 2021, your exemption will remain valid as long as the reason for travel remains unchanged. However, if you lodge an application after this date, it will be valid for three months from the time of approval and allow one outward journey during that time only. It is important to note that any additional trips must have their own Travel Exemptions approved in order to be valid. After the validity period has expired it is necessary to apply for a new Travel Exemption in order to continue travelling.

How do I apply for travel exemption Philippines?

Sometimes I wish I could just travel all the time, but alas, I do have other commitments that can't be ignored. With that said, I'm more than willing to make traveling a priority; if it's something necessary for this job then I'm happy to oblige! It would be great to know how much of my time would be spent on the road though; perhaps you could provide me with an estimate?

How many times can you travel in a year?

Some people view traveling as an activity that should not be limited in any way. Technically, there is no limit to the number of times that you can travel per year. However, it is important to note that if you are away for more than six months at a time, then this may cause some issues. For example, if you are gone for too long and don't have a permanent address or job back home, then this may pose problems with your visa application or other bureaucratic matters. Therefore, even though technically there is no limit on how many times you can travel each year, it is advisable to stay within the six-month period when possible in order to avoid any potential pitfalls down the line.

Can I travel without Covid vaccination?

For those of you who have not been fully vaccinated, it is essential to be aware of the entry requirements for the country you are travelling to. In order to gain access into some countries, you must provide a negative COVID-19 test result before departing from the UK. Depending on your destination and the government regulations, this test may need to be completed within 72 hours prior to travel or just one day before. Furthermore, it is also important that you check regularly for any updates in regards to what other documentation may be required when entering a foreign country during these uncertain times. It would be best practice to research thoroughly if there are any additional restrictions in place such as having an invitation letter or proof of health insurance coverage during your stay abroad.

Who can travel to Australia without an exemption?

When travelling to Australia, the process for unvaccinated citizens, permanent residents, and visitors has become much simpler. These travellers no longer need an individual travel exemption in order to enter or leave the country. All that is required of them is to meet the latest entry requirements as stipulated by Australian government authorities. The most important of these are completing a valid passport application form and providing proof of identity and travel plans; having a valid visa (if applicable); being tested for COVID-19 at least 72 hours before travelling; undergoing mandatory quarantine upon arrival in Australia; and making sure they have all necessary documents with them during their journey. For return travellers, they must also provide evidence that they remain eligible for re-entry into Australia such as any exemptions granted or health declarations made prior to leaving the country. With these steps taken care of, Australians can now enjoy safe travels without worry!

Do you apply for exemption or visa first?

Sometimes, due to changing circumstances, a visa that was once valid may no longer be accepted. In such cases, individuals must apply for a new visa if they wish to remain in the country legally. The process for applying for a new visa can begin when the restrictions imposed by the government are lifted. If an individual decides to apply for a new visa before the restrictions have been removed, they will also need to apply for an exemption from the government in order to proceed with their application. This exemption is necessary as it allows individuals who are already present in the country and whose visas have ceased, permission to remain until their applications are processed and approved. Therefore, if someone’s visa has expired or become invalidated due to changes in immigration laws or other factors beyond their control, they should consider applying for a new one when conditions allow and seek out any exemptions which may be available so that they can continue living legally within the country while their application is being considered.

Which countries are exempted from visa?

The COVID-19 pandemic has led to unprecedented entry requirements for international travel. If you have not been fully vaccinated, you will need to be aware of the specific entry requirements of the country that you are travelling to. These can include taking a COVID-19 test prior to departing from the UK and providing documentation upon arrival in your destination country. It is important to take note of these regulations as failure to comply could result in being denied entry or having quarantine measures enforced upon landing at your destination. Therefore, if you have not been vaccinated it is essential that you check the ‘entry requirements’ page before booking any trips abroad and make sure that you understand exactly what is needed for admission into the country. Taking a negative COVID-19 test before departure may be one of these requirements; however, this should only be done if requested by the government of your chosen destination and with results provided within a specified time frame.

What does passport exemption mean?

For individuals who are unable to obtain a passport, there are special exemptions that may be applied for. However, individuals who have encountered a delay in obtaining their passport which is not within their control do not qualify for this exemption and may also be ineligible for the diversity visa. The fact of the delay in acquiring a passport means that they cannot qualify for an exemption from the standard requirements, regardless of its cause. It is important to remember that these exemptions only apply to applicants who can demonstrate an inability to obtain a valid passport due to circumstances beyond their control.

What is the difference between exemption and exception?

When an exception is made to a rule, it means that the normal conditions of the rule don't hold true in this particular situation. Exceptions are usually granted on an individual basis and can be based on any number of special circumstances. An exemption is even more specific than an exception; instead of merely modifying the terms or conditions of a rule, exemptions completely exempt individuals from having to abide by them. For example, if a school normally charges $5000 for tuition, they might offer an exemption to certain students whose parents are professors at the same institution. In this case, these students would not have to pay tuition fees at all.

How do I write an application for exemption?

The thought of traveling really excites me, and I don't think I could turn down an opportunity to do so. While I have a few commitments that prevent me from being able to travel every weekend, if necessary I'm more than willing to travel on a weekly basis. Could you tell me what kind of expectations would be placed on me in terms of how much travelling would be required?

Can I leave Australia if I'm not vaccinated?

So, if you are not vaccinated or under 12 years old, and you do not have a medical exemption to travel, then unfortunately boarding your flight is off the table. This means that if you don’t meet these criteria and also don’t possess an exemption which allows you to depart Australia, then it will be impossible for you to take the flight. Such exemptions can include providing evidence of having recovered from COVID-19 in the last 6 months or proof of being tested for COVID-19 prior to flying. Without this proof, airlines will not be able to grant any passengers passage onto their planes, so please ensure that all necessary criteria has been satisfied before attempting to board your flight.

How do you answer what I will bring to the role?

To demonstrate my enthusiasm for the profession and the employer, I have taken steps to make sure that I am prepared for any opportunity. For example, I actively participate in relevant forums and events and regularly update myself on industry developments. Furthermore, as an individual with a strong drive to succeed and willingness to learn, I constantly challenge myself by taking up assignments outside of my comfort zone. As for skills required for a job role in this field, there are few which come naturally to me – such as attention to detail, communication and problem-solving abilities – and many more which I have learned over time through professional courses or mentorship programs. My experience in the past has given me an understanding of how these skills can be applied effectively in practice scenarios; therefore showing why I would be competent in this job role if offered it.

How do you answer ability to travel?

It is essential that you are aware of the current restrictions in place due to the COVID-19 pandemic if your visa has ceased. Once these restrictions have been lifted, you can apply for a new visa. However, if you decide to apply for a new visa before the lifting of those restrictions then it is important to also apply for an exemption from the Australian Government . This will help ensure that your application meets all criteria and is accepted by immigration authorities. It is vital that you understand what regulations are in place so that you can submit an accurate application and be granted permission to stay in Australia until your new visa has been approved.

What is visa exemption?

It is becoming increasingly common for countries to enter into visa exemption agreements with one another. This allows citizens of certain countries to travel freely between those countries without having to obtain a visa beforehand. The process is extremely straightforward and usually involves the two governments negotiating an agreement that outlines the terms of the arrangement and then signing it, officially recognizing each other's citizens as exempt from visa requirements. Once enacted, travelers from both countries can enter each other's borders without needing a visa or any paperwork. This makes it much easier for people to visit family members, explore new areas, do business, or just enjoy their holidays abroad in peace of mind knowing they are legally allowed entry into their destination country. Visa exemption agreements benefit those who take advantage of them by allowing them more freedom when traveling abroad while also helping strengthen diplomatic ties between participating nations.

How do you write a proof of travel?

It is essential to have a copy of your plane ticket, airline email confirmation or travel itinerary. This document should include your name and the date of your travel. It is often generated by a travel agency and serves as proof that you are scheduled to fly on the specified date. Without this important piece of evidence, airlines may not permit you to board the aircraft. Therefore, it is essential for travelers to make sure they have their flight documents readily available prior to boarding the plane.

Share of Democratic Registrations Is Declining, but What Does It Mean?

Virtually every group of voters under 70 has become less likely to register as Democrats compared with Republicans since 2019.

Newly registered voters, who are disproportionately young and nonwhite, have tended to lean Democratic.

That’s been less and less true during the Biden era.

A majority of states ask people to select a party affiliation when they register, and last year newly registered Democrats made up only about 53 percent of those who chose a major party — beating Republican sign-ups by a narrow margin of 26 percent to 23 percent of total registrations — according to data from L2, a nonpartisan voter data vendor.

Share of new major party registrants who were Democratic

Source: L2 voter data

The tepid Democratic numbers among new registrants are a small but surprising part of Donald J. Trump’s narrow early lead in the polls. Taking the last two national New York Times/Siena College polls together, President Biden leads by less than a percentage point among voters who say they voted in 2020, but he trails by 23 points among those who say they didn’t vote in 2020 — and about one third of those nonvoters are new registrants, who aren’t offering Democrats their usual support.

The party’s underperformance among newly registered voters is all the more striking given the demographic makeup of the new registrants. Half are younger than 30, and half are nonwhite. Yet they’re less Democratic than the older and whiter voters already registered in these same states with party registration.

And those states with party registration are more Democratic than the nation as a whole — they voted for President Biden by nine percentage points on average in 2020. So if Democratic registrations have only a three-point edge in those states, that might not bode well for the party nationwide.

Why are Democrats doing so poorly among newly registered voters? Unfortunately, it’s hard to say. Voter registration data can be weird. It can be influenced by events that spur new registrations, like the run-up to a presidential primary or a Supreme Court decision like the overturning of Roe v. Wade. In those cases, shifts in voter registration might not have any longer-term meaning.

New voter registration also draws from an out-of-the-ordinary group of people — those previously unregistered, those newly eligible, and people re-registering at a new address. Trends among these voters may not be representative of the broader population.

As a result, the numbers aren’t as clear-cut as they might seem. The best case for Republicans is that it confirms the deterioration in Democratic standing among young and nonwhite voters shown in national polls. That’s certainly possible, but it’s not a slam dunk.

In nearly every age group, new voters were less likely to register as Democrats than four years ago.

Share of new major party registrants who were Democratic, by age

Virtually every group of voters under 70 has become much less likely to register as Democrats with respect to Republicans since 2019. It’s a trend that broadly follows the pattern in recent national polls, which show Mr. Biden struggling to retain support among young voters even as he holds his own with those over 65.

But most of the decline in Democratic numbers is yielding an increase in the independent share of registrants, not a surge in Republican registrants. We don’t know much about these unaffiliated voters. But given that many are from traditionally left-of-center groups (young and nonwhite), the party can hope they’re still Democratic-leaning, even if they don’t call themselves Democrats.

A related possibility is that the declining Democratic strength reflects the idiosyncrasies of what might have driven voter registration in 2019 versus 2023: the Democratic presidential primary in 2020 and the Republican one in 2024. It would certainly make sense if partisans were likelier to register ahead of their party’s presidential primary, and that would have helped Democrats in 2019 while helping Republicans in 2023. Similarly, many independent-minded Democrats might have been likelier to register as Democrats in 2019, to ensure their eligibility to vote in the coming Democratic contest. This kind of explanation would leave open the possibility that Democrats are poised to enjoy a surge in registration in 2024, after a noncompetitive primary but ahead of the general election.

One intriguing possibility is that Republican strength today is a function of Democratic registration strength in the past. Imagine, for instance, that “resistance” voters opposed to Mr. Trump were highly motivated to register to vote during the Trump years. If so, the remaining pool of nonregistrants would be disproportionately composed of voters who weren’t energized to resist Mr. Trump. At a certain point, new registrants would become relatively Trump-friendly.

This explanation is supported by one oddity in the data: If you look carefully at the chart, you’ll notice that the registration decline for Democrats isn’t very big among those 18 to 21, but the shift is much larger among those 22 and older. This basic pattern could be explained if anti-Trump registration already drained the pool of potential anti-Trump voters among those eligible in 2020. But the anti-Trump voters who were too young in 2019 could register for the first time in 2023.

These explanations all have some merit. I’d guess a mix of all of them is at play — including the possibility that it reflects real change in public opinion away from Democrats. Interestingly, 2023 was actually the most Democratic year of the Biden administration for new registration among voters over 65; it was the worst year of the Biden administration for those under 30. That’s the pattern we’re seeing in the polls, and it’s hard to explain why it would show up in the registration data if there weren’t some kind of change in public opinion.

Presidential Race

Four years after the pandemic began, Covid-19 receives little discussion on the campaign trail. But its shadow continues to play a profound role in voters’ pessimism and distrust  amid a Biden-Trump rematch.

Republicans who get their news from nonconservative mainstream media outlets are less likely to support former President Donald Trump  than those who follow conservative outlets, according to a New York Times/Siena College poll.

No Labels, a group that for months has pledged to run a centrist presidential ticket in the event of a rematch between President Biden and Trump, is running out of time to recruit a presidential candidate  after a string of rejections.

Other Key Races

Kari Lake, a Trump acolyte running for Senate in Arizona, is struggling to walk away from the controversial positions  that have turned off independents and alienated establishment Republicans.

Ohio will almost certainly go for Trump this November. Senator Sherrod Brown, the last Democrat holding statewide office, will need to defy the gravity of the presidential contest  to win a fourth term.

March 19 was the biggest primary night since Super Tuesday, and there were few surprises in the results. Here are the key takeaways .

Dragon’s Dogma 2 pawns and how they work

They babble as much as I would if I were hangin’ with my hero.

Dragon's Dogma 2 pawns - Riftstone

  • Inclinations and how to change
  • Vocations and specializations
  • Hiring pawns and using Riftstones

Forgotten Riftstones and unique pawns

  • Best pawn party composition

The pawn system is the beating heart of Dragon’s Dogma 2 and its predecessor. Although this is a sternly single-player fantasy adventure, you’re never really alone with these chatty, high-five-hungry NPCs by your side to aid in battle and help guide your path.

These immortal characters travel between realms and exist solely to serve the true Arisen (that’s you). They aren’t just mindless husks dragging their feet as they follow you through the underbrush; they can gather items, lead you to hidden treasures or quest locations, and even provide information to make your travels easier.

The pawn you create at the start of the game will stick with you to the end, so granting them the skills and personality you deem most valuable is key. Additionally, making them bulky will boost their carry weight, and that’s a blessing. Making them hot also helps since you have to look at them for 40+ hours, and since they'll be adventuring with other players, giving them a stupid name might earn you bonus points.

All in all, pawns keep you company, carry your junk, kick monster butt, give great high fives and elbow bumps, and serve as connections to the Dragon’s Dogma 2 community. Here's how they work.

Pawn inclinations and how to change them

Once you’ve designed your ultimate companion, you have to choose their inclination. This dictates the more intricate parts of their personality and behaviour.

There are four pawn inclinations:

  • Kindhearted: These pawns prioritise support, buffing the team and holding off enemies.
  • Calm: Strategic-minded pawns that prioritise defense and evasion.
  • Simple: Pawns that love exploration, item gathering, and will open chests every chance they get.
  • Straightforward: Perceptive pawns that excel at spotting enemies and rush into battle whether you like it or not.

The inclination you choose for your main pawn is entirely up to you and your playstyle, but adding pawns with different inclinations as you explore can provide some much-needed balance to your party. You’ll also hear the same voice lines over and over with pawns of the same type, so it's better to mix it up.

If you’d like to change your pawn’s inclination, the earliest time to do so is in Vernworth. Beside the Riftstone you’ll find a merchant called Neomith selling Rift Incense that lets you alter your pawn's inclination for 2,000 RC a pop.

Pawn vocations and specializations

Pawns can choose from the same starting vocations as players: Fighter, Mage, Thief, or Archer. By progressing to Vernworth and completing the Vocation Frustration quest, you'll also unlock two advanced vocations that they can pick from: Warrior and Sorcerer. Unfortunately, advanced vocations such as Magick Archer, Mystic Sprearhand, Trickster, and Warfarer, are only available to your Arisen.

Specializations are skills only pawns can acquire that help give them an increased level of independence. For example, the Chirurgeon specialization allows a pawn to use curatives on you and the other pawns in your party. Through doing certain quests in the game, such as helping Flora craft fruit roborant in Melve then finding her in Vernworth market, you can get tomes that will let you apply a specific specialization to one of your pawns.

How to hire pawns and use Riftstones

While exploring you’ll stumble on Riftstones in both cities and out in the world. Touching these monuments transports you to the place where pawns dwell, allowing you to summon new pawns to accompany you on your journey—basically a pawn job board. It's worth noting that each Riftstone specialises in a particular type of pawn in terms of inclination and physical build, and you can see this list by viewing Linked Riftstones at the big stone in Vernworth.

You can hire two pawns at a time. This is free if they’re the same level as your Arisen or below, but it'll cost you RC—or Rift Crystals —if they're above your current level. This rare currency can be earned by resting at inns, completing quests, or defeating certain monsters like the wight. Your main pawn will also earn Rift Crystals while in the employ of other players.

When interacting with a Riftstone, you’re also able to set a pawn quest . This is a task given to your main pawn while he’s hanging out with another player. You can decide on what the task is—like killing a specific monster, for example—and set a reward for the Arisen who completes it. This is a great way to earn valuable rewards passively.

It’s important to remember that other players' pawns in your party will not level up . Once you outlevel your guest pawns, it’s best to find a Riftstone and swap them for stronger ones.  When you surrender a pawn, you can also give them a farewell gift from your inventory to take back to their master. Try to be nice and not slip me a dirty doo-doo handkerchief after my pawn saved your butt from a hulked-out cyclops.

You’ll sometimes stumble on Forgotten Riftstones while out in the wilds. When interacting with these ruined artifacts, one of two things will happen: either the Riftstone will be restored and useable again, or a ridiculously high-level pawn will be summoned, causing the Riftstone to disappear for good. You’ll be able to hire this pawn for free regardless of their level and the high quality of their gear.

So what's the best pawn party composition?

While you could technically create a party of all Fighters for Hulk Hogan levels of smackdown, you’ll quickly find that balance is key. Actually, no, not balance exactly— you just really need a Mage in your party at all times , no matter what.

Not only can these spellcasters heal you, but they can imbue your weapons with an element. This is crucial. Many enemies in Dragon’s Dogma 2, such as slimes and phantoms, can only be wounded when you're wielding elemental damage. There’s no reason to leave the magic user at home when the world is so full of things they could hurt. Not to mention, the Mage Meister's Teaching is the Celestial Paean spell, which grants partywise damage reduction and infinite stamina.

Besides your compulsory Mage, having a Fighter or Warrior is also important for keeping enemies occupied in melee , especially if you're playing a spellcaster. But besides that, party composition is all down to you.

'Supply and demand on steroids' as peak Sydney to Melbourne flights exceed $900. What does it mean for holiday travel?

People crowded around and liked up at check-in terminals at Rex Airlines departures area at Sydney Airport

If you're not a fan of watching race cars go around in circles, you may have gotten a shock if you needed to book a flight from Sydney to Melbourne this week.

With Formula 1 grand prix events kicking off at Melbourne's Albert Park on Thursday, it was rare to spot a one-way fare for less than $400 from Monday.

By Wednesday, across Jetstar, Rex, Virgin and Qantas, flights were a minimum of about $500 to upwards of $900.

In some instances, it was cheaper to book a seat in business class than economy.

While it's not uncommon for airlines to hike up prices around sporting events, holidays and concerts, Chris Ford from Compare the Market said with Easter approaching this was a "double whammy".

"It's sort of a double hit that can extend over a period of time," he told the ABC.

Experts have called it "supply and demand on steroids" during peak periods.

A close of up a crowd cheering at the Grand Prix.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) monitors the prices and profits of the major domestic airlines but plays no role in regulating fares.

So, airlines have the freedom to increase prices according to market demand and conditions, aviation analyst and associate professor at RMIT, Chrystal Zhang, said.

"The key question is really, 'How high can the airline go?'"

She warned nowadays people need to book trips months in advance and be willing to be flexible around "hot events" and holidays.

Best days to avoid Easter holiday hikes

Concerts and events generally only lead to fluctuations over a few days, Mr Ford said.

But when Taylor Swift mania took hold last month, airfares to Sydney and Melbourne spiked over a sustained period, even across regional airports.

In the lead-up to Easter, Compare the Market analysed which days were best to travel and how long it would take for prices to start to drop.

It found consistent patterns in its reviews over Christmas, showing fares inevitably "skyrocket" before public holiday days.

People sit in a carnival ride swing as it spins

Comparing where prices were at about two weeks out from Easter, there was a difference of hundreds of dollars between the cheapest and most expensive days to fly.

With the Easter long weekend falling on March 29 to 31, flights out of Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne to the rest of Australia's major cities were the most expensive on March 28.

The cheapest days in the lead-up were between March 18 and 22.

On the other side, flights were most affordable from April 4 to 12.

Prices will continue to rise

Over the last two weeks, flights have been increasing incrementally along key routes, and are expected to continue to rise, Mr Ford said.

"We're not talking hundreds of dollars at this point in time, but it will be interesting over the next few days to see how much they do nudge up."

This week, flights from Brisbane to Sydney were about $170 one-way on March 28, Mr Ford said.

They come down to $110 on April 4, then a few days later prices are at $74.

"You're looking at around $100 from peak to trough over a two-week period," he said.

travel party means

On the Melbourne to Sydney route, a flight on March 28 this week was selling for around $180 depending on the flight times.

When Compare the Market analysed flights a week ago, the most expensive flight from Melbourne to Sydney on March 25 was $174.

Now, with the pinch of grand prix demand and most flights being close to sold out, the cheapest flight is about $400.

By April 9, there are flights for $52.

Weekend crowds at the international racing event are expected to exceed 440,000.

"If there is a lesson to be learned for future needs, it's doing that research as early as possible," Mr Ford said.

How far should you book in advance?

There are some opportunities to find cheaper prices as holidays approach, but it depends on how much time you have and if you're open to "inconvenience", Mr Ford said.

Generally, flights will be less expensive during early mornings and late nights, and from regional airports.

"You need to be able to be more flexible and open to travelling slightly out of town, or getting to the airport at 4am for a 6am flight," he said.

But, the best way to avoid getting stung is to book early, and check terms and conditions in case flights are cancelled, Professor Zhang said.

She suggested these days it's best to generally book flights about three months in advance.

"Two to three months before you plan the travel is a kind of suggested time to finalise your schedule and your overall itinerary," she said.

Depending on the demand of the particular route, you will start seeing prices rise up to two to three weeks, she added.

"And you really need to be mindful of these very hot events in hot destinations, whether that's a big conference or a popular sporting event."

A man and a woman with backpacks and suitcases walk through an airport with their backs to the camera.

'People will still fly'

Rico Merkert, professor of operations and supply chain management at the University of Sydney, said there have always been increases during peak seasons, but it has become more excessive since the COVID pandemic.

"Supply and demand on steroids," he told the ABC.

"What happened is that we didn't have enough capacity or [there was] reduced capacity."

Now, there are chances to "capture an audience" when there are holidays and events like a Taylor Swift concert.

"Sydney to Melbourne is one of the busiest routes on the planet, so it's difficult for airlines to add more capacity — more flights," Professor Merkert said.

"But they see that suddenly everyone wants to fly so that means they can easily increase the fares and know people will still fly."

Jetstar said strong demand from Sydney to Melbourne was a factor in their high prices this week.

"Most customers book well ahead of when they want to travel and like all airlines, our cheapest fares sell out first," Jetstar said in a statement to the ABC.

Falls into 'price gouging' but is it illegal?

These practices are unfortunate for people who have no choice but to book last-minute travel, Professor Merkert said, adding that it would "fall into the category of price gouging".

It also isn't isolated to airlines, with petrol prices already increasing in the lead-up to Easter.

"It's the same with a car, if you have to drive to Orange (in regional NSW) to see your family, you might be able to take a train but there are all sorts of other destinations in NSW where you have to travel further and you have no choice," he said.

The ACCC said increasing prices during periods of high demand is not illegal, but businesses just need to provide clear and up-front information about the price consumers will pay.

Currently, competition is the best hope of keeping prices within reason.

"The ACCC tries to ensure that there's sufficient competition in the market," Professor Merkert said.

"If there are two or three airlines in this space, surely one will have a slightly better deal.

"But in fact, if one raises fares by 30 per cent, then the others won't be far behind."
