Tenerife Cruise Port

Cruise ships dock at Santa Cruz de Tenerife , the island’s capital and its largest and most populous city. Santa Cruz de Tenerife also shares the status of the capital of all the Canary Islands with Las Palmas de Gran Canaria .

Cruise port Tenerife (Puerto de Santa Cruz de Tenerife) lies on the northeastern coast of the island and features one of the deepest natural harbours in the world. The majority of the cruise ships dock at Muelle Sur, a long breakwater that can accommodate up to five vessels at a time.

Santa Cruz Tenerife downtown is located around 1 km (0.6 miles) to 1.5 km (0.9 miles) from the Muelle Sur ship berths, depending on where your ship docks. To get into the town center, you can either turn right and walk along the breakwater (a 15-20 minute walk to the downtown) or take a free shuttle bus provided by the port authority. The shuttle bus drop-off/pick-up point is Plaza de España , the city’s main and largest square. The ride takes only a few minutes. Taxis are also available on the pier outside of the ship, however, there may be a limited number of them.

In 2016, a new cruise ship terminal was inaugurated only a 5-minute walk from the city center. It is located at Muelle Norte quay, and features a 395 m berth and the largest cruise terminal building in the Canaries, with a huge check-in hall with 50 desks, a large waiting hall, and parking for buses and taxi ranks. In case your cruise ship docks here, Plaza de España and the city center will be on your left, only a 5-minute walk from the terminal.

Getting Around & Local Transportation

  • Tenerife Island has a well-developed infrastructure and is easy to navigate. Santa Cruz de Tenerife’s downtown and cruise terminal areas are flat and wheelchair-friendly .
  • TITSA company (Transportes Interurbanos de Tenerife SA) operates the only public bus service in Tenerife. The island has an efficient network of public buses that connect most towns and cities on the island. Getting around Tenerife by local bus is easy and cheap, however, it’s not a recommended option if you stay on the island only for a day.
  • The  Intercambiador Santa Cruz (aka Tenerife Transport Interchange) is the main bus station in Tenerife. It is located in the city center across from the iconic Auditorio de Tenerife, around 1.5 km/0.9 miles (a 20-minute walk) from the shuttle bus drop-off point at Plaza de España.
  • Tenerife tram is a light rail service that consists of two lines: Line 1 is 12.5 km/7.8 miles long and connects Intercambiador Santa Cruz de Tenerife with Avenida de la Trinidad in San Cristobal de La Laguna town. Line 2 links La Cuesta and Tíncer.
  • Santa Cruz de Tenerife offers amazing shopping opportunities. The old town is centered around Plaza de España, Plaza de la Candelaria, and Calle del Castillo – the main pedestrian street in Santa Cruz. If you are looking for a shopping mall, El Corte Inglés expands on 7 floors and offers everything you can imagine! It is located on Avenida Tres de Mayo, 1.5 km/0.9 miles (a 20-minute walk) from Plaza de España. It is open from Monday to Saturday 09:30 to 21:30.
  • The majority of beaches in Tenerife are located on the island’s south coast around the town of Los Cristianos (Playa de las Américas, Playa de las Vistas, Playa de la Tejita, Playa de Torviscas, Puerto Colon, Playa del Dugue, Playa de los Cristianos, Playa de El Médano). Playa de Las Teresitas is the most popular beach near Santa Cruz de Tenerife (a 15-minute drive) and boasts golden sands imported from Africa. Read more about this beach below in the article.
  • The currency in the Canary Islands is EURO (€) like in the rest of Spain. Local currency and credit cards are widely accepted. ATMs ( telebanco and cajero in Spanish) and currency exchange are available downtown.
  • The Canary Islands are part of Spain and thus European Union, however, they enjoy some exceptions in the fiscal and economic areas and are outside the VAT area. Instead, they are within the Canary Islands Special Zone (ZEC), a low-tax zone . What does it mean for cruise passengers? If you plan to shop for watches, perfumes and other goods, Santa Cruz de Tenerife is a paradise!
  • Tenerife has two airports: Tenerife Norte Airport (TFN) (aka Tenerife North–Ciudad de La Laguna Airport, formerly Los Rodeos Airport) is located 15 km/9.5 miles (a 20-minute drive) northwest of the Tenerife cruise port, while Tenerife South Airport (TFS) – Reina Sofia Airport is located 62 km/38.5 miles (a 45-minute drive) southwest of the port.

Distance: A 20-minute walk from Plaza de España.
  • Candelaria Square (Plaza de la Candelaria) – This square is adjacent to Plaza de España and is famous for the 18th century Triunfo de la Candelaria (aka Obelisco de la Candelaria), an imposing white marble obelisk dedicated to the Virgin of Candelaria, the patroness of the Canary Islands.
  • Calle del Castillo – The main pedestrian street connects Candelaria Square and Weyler Square (Plaza Weyler) with its lavish fountain. The street is around 1 km long and runs through the heart of Santa Cruz de Tenerife’s old town. In this area, you’ll find designer stores, shops, banks, cafes, bars and eateries.
  • Parque Marítimo César Manrique – The iconic aquatic and entertainment complex lies next to the Auditorio de Tenerife and features three seawater pools surrounded by waterfalls and palm trees, restaurants, terraces, sunbathing areas, and many other facilities. The park covers 22,000 m 2 and was designed by the famous Lanzarote artist César Manrique. Distance from Plaza de España: A 25-minute walk.

  • Tenerife Espacio de las Artes (TEA) – The Tenerife Arts Space is a modern art museum and cultural space that sits in the old town area next to the Museum of Nature and Archaeology. The arts center is known for its state-of-the-art architecture featuring a facade made of concrete, with 1,200 glass windows of 720 different sizes and shapes. It consists of two exhibition halls, one housing a permanent exhibition of the works of Óscar Domínguez, a Spanish surrealist painter, while the second one hosts temporary exhibitions. Distance from Plaza de España: A 10-minute walk.
  • Our Lady of Africa Market (Mercado Municipal Nuestra Señora De África) – Situated on Avenida San Sebastián in the old town, right next to the Tenerife Arts Space, the African Market is a bustling, traditional bazaar of over 300 stalls selling fresh local produce, from meats, fish, fruit, and vegetables to flowers, herbs and spices. It is a lively place full of colors and smells, a great way to feel the city’s unique vibe and authentic life!

2. Playa de las Teresitas

The beaches in Tenerife are known for their black volcanic and golden sands and crystal clear turquoise waters. Las Teresitas Beach is Santa Cruz de Tenerife’s most popular beach and one of the most visited beaches on the island. It is nestled along the northeastern coast near the town of San Andrés, approximately 10 km/6.5 miles (a 15-minute drive) from the port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

This breathtaking beach stretches 1.5 km along the coast and is lined with palm trees and large parking. The beach is man-made and boasts silky golden sands imported from the Sahara desert in Africa. Due to its incredible beauty, great facilities (toilets, showers, changing rooms, accessible walkways, boat rentals, chairs, umbrellas, hammocks, eateries and beach clubs), and proximity to Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the beach is extremely popular with both tourists and locals. It can get very crowded in the summer months and on weekends. If you plan to go shopping, you can visit the little town of San Andrés located right next to the beach.

You can access Playa de Las Teresitas by car, bus (line #910 from the main bus station or Plaza de España), or taxi. Cruise lines normally offer shore excursions to Las Teresitas beach (transfer options), however, I suggest you take a taxi if you travel with a group as it’s going to be cheaper.

3. Mount Teide

Probably one of the most impressive sites to visit in the Canary Islands is Mount Teide, home to Spain’s highest peak (3,715 m/12,188 ft) and the third-highest volcano in the world. This UNESCO World Heritage Site and geological wonder is part of Teide National Park (Parque Nacional del Teide) which covers an area of around 18,900 hectares in the municipality of La Orotava.

The jaw-dropping landscapes made up of rugged lava fields, ancient calderas, and volcanic peaks will take you back to another dimension and make you experience Mars on Earth. Teide’s most recent eruption took place in late 1909 and the volcano is still considered active.

Mount Teide

Mount Teide is located approximately a 1-hour 30-minute drive from the port of Tenerife, however, already after a 45-minute drive you’ll access the entrance to the national park. I suggest you visit the park on a guided shore excursion because the drive through the park itself may take hours. Guided tours usually stop at different points of interest in the park, such as the Roque Cinchado – a 27-meter-high volcanic rock pillar and the most photographed rock formation in the park.

Teide Cable Car station is available at the foot of the mountain and it’s possible to take a cable car to the top. However, don’t be disappointed if it’s canceled last minute for safety reasons, due to the strong winds.

Some of these species include dolphins, sea lions, gorillas, otters, red pandas, alligators, penguins, tigers, chimpanzees, sloths, and many more.

The park is famous for being home to 5 orcas and is the second place in Europe to house killer whales! In the park, you can join spectacular orca shows, dolphin shows hosted in Europe’s largest dolphin show pool, and the world’s largest indoor penguin exhibition. The picturesque town is famous for its heritage-listed old town filled with colorful houses, churches, museums, manor houses and gardens. Wandering around its streets, make sure you taste the local wine and traditional cuisine in one of the quaint coffee shops and restaurants. The town of La Orotava is hilly, so make sure you wear comfortable footwear. Some of the main attractions include:

  • Church of Our Lady of Conception (Iglesia de La Concepción) – The 18th-century Baroque church

With their black sands and spectacular surroundings, Playa del Socorro and Playa El Bollullo are the best beaches in this area. Due to the region’s centuries-old winemaking tradition, local wine tasting is a must in one of the local “bodegas” (wineries). Tenerife boasts premium quality wines and numerous wine-tasting tours are available.

Plaza del Adelantado is the main square of the city, while those of you who look for authentic tastes can visit La Laguna Market or one of the many tapas bars. Canary Islands

Located 70 miles off the coast of Africa, the Canary Islands, a territory of Spain, is an archipelago comprised of seven volcanic islands that the ancient Romans once referred to as the Fortunate Islands. Rugged terrain and black-sand beaches make up the brilliant landscape, which is home to all kinds of wildlife, including an interesting assortment of European and African birds, lizards, geckos, the Canarian shrew and the Algerian hedgehog, as well as a diverse variety of marine life.

Long considered a tropical paradise for European travelers, the Canary Islands has emerged as a popular cruise destination due to its exotic locale and modern European style. Well-known for perfect weather and sun-drenched beaches, the islands offer captivating natural attractions and fantastic scenery -- four national parks and four biosphere reserves are located there. More than 40 museums displaying archaeological artifacts and aboriginal and modern art are open to the public. Take a camel ride to Fire Mountain in Arrecife to view amazing lunar-like landscapes, enjoy the vibrant city life of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria or sunbathe on the volcanic black-sand beaches in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. A 200-year-old botanical garden is a highlight for visitors to Puerto de la Cruz, and Loro Parque houses the world’s largest collection of parrots.

  • The Canary Islands is a year-round cruise destination.
  • Cruises to the Canary Islands are typically 10 to 14 nights in length.
  • Often featured in conjunction with Western Mediterranean itineraries, cruises to the Canary Islands typically depart from popular cities such as Rome and Barcelona, and as far north as London. Occasionally the Canary Islands will be included as a port of call in westbound trans-Atlantic cruises. If you must fly a very long distance to reach your port of departure, we suggest that you arrive at the port city at least one or two days in advance of your Canary Islands cruise. This will give you time to rest and get oriented before boarding the ship. Most cruise lines offer pre-cruise hotel packages.

Canary Islands - Is It Worth It?

Cool Cruiser

I'm thinking of booking the Navigator for the fall, but I can't seem to find much of anything to do on this 10 day island hop. Can anyone who has done this cruise please give me some insight?

Anyone out there? We would love to hear some thoughts as well.

It is difficult to advise on this one. To each his own. Some people like the Canary Islands, some don't.

For me, on the positive side:

  • good climate, warm all year, but never too hot;
  • spectacular scenery in the interior (volcanic islands);
  • fairly good shopping by European standards, with duty-free prices;
  • safe, no high crime index;
  • touristy, catering for British holiday market;
  • some nice beaches.

On the negative:

  • no great history, architecture etc. like other European towns;
  • Spanish opening and eating hours - town shops close at 1:30 p.m. and only open when the ship is about to leave. (not a problem in Madeira)

You will not get that razamataz or tropical feeling you have in the Caribbean, nor will you have the culture experience of Europe. If you want a nice, laid-back holiday with a good proportion of sea days and some pleasant excursions and shopping, I would go for it.

One word of warning - The Bay of Biscay can get very rough at times!!

I'm going to follow this thread as I'm very interested in this one. In checking on the roll calls, I don't see many people on any of the Canary sailings. Is this because most Brits don't know about the CC boards or is this simply now a popular destination? I'm also in the U.S. and this one would be a long hall, but I actually enjoy the sea days more than the ports of call days. If I decide to give this a try, what kind of mix of people can I expect? And as asked above, can anyone give me the names of local operators for shore excursions? What RCL has on there website has good pricing, but with 3000 people onboard, it could be a mess with on and off the bus, etc. Thanks for any help.

I am in the UK, and have done a similar itinerary, but not with RCL, but with P&O. Just as a bit of background I am 42, with a DH of 53, and DS on 12, we did a new years cruise a couple of years ago which took in most of these ports. Here goes

Medeira - stunningly beautiful, worth taking the cable car to the top of the mountain and looking around the tropical gardens - its very pretty and worth a visit.

Tenerife - depends where you go into, it is an ok port, but worth doing a trip up the volcano, not a pretty island and very touristy, but a good place to visit.

Gran Canaria - I am sorry I can't remember this one - it was New Years day when we arrived and everything was shut!

Lanzarote - have not cruised there, but my sister has been there for the last couple of weeks on holiday, and loves the beaches - she did a bus trip of the island and said it was lovely

Vigo - typical Spanish port, and you will feel the culture of Spain here - there are several very nice Tapas restaurants and some excellent wines - so a long leisurely lunch is the order of the day - there is a nice square and some churches, not a huge city, but a nice town!

Southampton - UK - you are 2 hours from London here, and if I was you definately spend a bit of time up in London either before or after your cruise especially if you haven't done it before. If you have and want to try something else, Stonehenge is not too far away from Southampton, and there is lots of beautiful English countryside to take in. I can provide you with loads of information on places to see in the UK outside of London. To be honest London does not represent England, and you really should try and get away from it if you can -although if you have never been before it is definately worth visiting as it is a beautiful city. Anyway I hope you have found the above information useful. Let me know if I can be of any more help

How far away is Stonehenge. I am looking at a cruise out of South Hampton for next year. I've always been interested in Stonehenge.

Stonehenge is about 40 miles from Southampton - so would be a bit expensive in a cab, but you could hire a car and stay up there for a few days - here is the web link which gives you loads of information - I am not sure about trains direct from Southampton, but the web site will help you out.

I can agree with everything that cruise-dee says.

Remember that this cruise starts and ends in the UK. For British cruisers it avoids the cost and hassle of air travel, so expect plenty of British on-board.

The Canary Islands and Madeira have been favourite holiday destinations for the British for 30 years and with the recent increase in cheap flights, the number of hotels, British publs etc. has grown significantly. They speak good English everywhere, so you will feel at home.

I would recommend taking excursions in the afternoon (because of the Siesta in Spain - so the shops in town arte only open in the morning). In Madeira, you have no choice, as the ship only arrives at 12:00. There is plenty to do in Madeira for 3 days, but as you only have five hours effectively, you have to prioritize. A 3 1/2 hour tour of part of the island could be a good option, but leave time to visit a wine lodge. The strong, fortified wine is different and worth a purchase, as is the honey cake.

In Tenerife, you will dock in the centre of Santa Cruz. If the weather is OK, see the town in the morning and visit the Teide volcano in the afternoon. You can either take a tour or hire a car. Hiring a car is easy and cheap - you do not need a guide. If the weather is bad (i.e. foggy or raining) go to the south side of the island (Playa das Americas) where the weather is usually better.

In Gran Canaria, a visit to Las Palmas is a good morning stroll, with a trip down the motorway for 45 minutes will take you to Maspalomas beach in the afternoon. This beach is definately worth a leisurely stroll. Again, hiring a car may be best. With bad weather, there is a large commercial mall just outside of Las Palmas (El Corte Ingles) that is open in the afteroon.

In Vigo, a trip to Santiago is the real cultural experience of the trip.

I have never been to Lanzarote, so cannot help there.

Thank you very much:)

We are booked on the Canaries cruise for 16th Oct and this will be our second visit.

The Canaries were formed by volcanic activity and the landscape on each isleand varies tremendously.

Lanzarote was I believe used for the lunar shots in on of the James Bond films. You must take a coach tour of Fire Mountain and there is usually an optional camel train ride beforehand. The landscape is all lave and rock and really quite striking. You will be given a demo of the heat that is just below the surface !

Madeira is beautiful lush island, hilly, and the trip on the cable car is well worth doing. From there you can either take the tobaggan run down the hill , or just wander round the tropical gardens. The shopping area includes a lovely flower market and interesting fish market. All of these activities can be done individually, so don't bother with the tours.

Personally I think the other ports of call are less attractive, but a visit to the church at Santiaga del compostela from Vigo is a popular choice.

I ahve no idea about the mix of nationalities on board, but I hope that some of our American friends will join us:)

The Canaries tend to be a popular destination because the weather is always warmer than in the UK. As it is only a 10 day cruise, you should try and combine it with a short stay in London, or maybe Winchester, depending on which airport you come in to.

The P&O website has more details on the ports of call, including more tour ideas.

Brilliance seems to have a nice itin to this area RT from Barcelona..has anyone taken that? Maybe a post on the Europe Bd would yield more comments..

Thanks to all for the great info. I don't know what I'd do without this CC Board. We've been to London several times, so I think that we may just hop the train from Gatwick and continue to Southampton for a 2 night stay pre-cruise. Post cruise, we'll just have 1 night before our flight back, so I'm thinking of just spending it at a Gatwick hotel as our flight will depart at 12:30PM. It makes for a 14 day trip for us and that's long enough. Any other ideas or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Just to add some xtra info, if you have a couple of days in Southampton pre-cruise, then the best way to do Stonehenge would be to catch a train to Salisbury, the train station in Southampton is a stones throw from the port, the train to Salisbury is not very long, when you get to Salisbury there are tour bus departures to Stonehenge, they are fully guided and will give you all the info you need, I recently worked with one of the tour guides and an informative tour is guranteded!

Also, in Southampton, there is a fully guided bus tour of Southampton City Centre and the Docks, called 'Do The Docks' operated with open top buses, I have done this tour myself and it is excellent, really informative, even if not interested in shipping/cruising etc it is still a very informative tour, and in my opinion great value for money.

We are booked on the Canary Island Cruise on Independance next autumn, and we are looking forward to it, fortunately we live about a 2 hour drive from Southampton so wont have much travelling to do, the climate in the Canary's will be very pleasant in October approx. 25C, very nice, the shopping is cheap as it is tax free!

Hope this helps.

we have been to Lanzarote twice for fortnight vacations. It is not a large island and is very easy to get around by car. There is so much to see. Fire Mountain is a must. The landscape is amazing from north to south and the way vines are grown is very interesting. The artist Cesar Manrique had a great influence on the island and it is because of him that high rise buildings are not allowed to be built, no more than 3 floors are allowed. Yes there are touristy areas aimed at the Brits which we avoid, the touristy areas not the Brits!. We hired a car and toured the whole island, it is really beautiful away from the tourist hot spots.

Thanks for all of the information. I'm really as excited about going to England for a few days as I am to be going on a cruise:)

Gran Canaria Shore Excursions: Beaches & City Sights

When docking in Las Palmas, the cruise port and capital city of Gran Canaria, shore excursions are available to make your time ashore especially memorable. Gran Canaria, the third largest and most populous island of the Canaries, features miles of golden sand beaches, abundant sunshine, volcanic landscapes, and dense pine forests.

Popular Gran Canaria shore excursions include beach breaks at Maspalomas Beach at the southern end of the island where you can enjoy spectacular coastal views, swim in crystal-clear ocean waters, bask in the sun, or cool down in the shade of a swaying palm tree. Take a bracing walk along the extensive sand dunes, a protected nature reserve, and stroll the Promenade that leads to the island’s only lighthouse, built in 1890 and still an active guiding light.

For a great family adventure from your cruise to Gran Canaria , set sail on a whale of a tour to spot gentle dolphins, flying fish, and maybe even whales. Explore the Atlantic waters around Gran Canaria with a marine biologist guide, who will share tales and tidbits about the area’s rich marine life.

Book Gran Canaria cruise excursions that will whisk you away on a scenic drive to two of the island’s most breathtaking resorts, Puerto Rico and Puerto de Mogan. Arrive at Puerto Rico to enjoy a swim in cool, deep water and a snack at one of the many snack stands. At Puerto de Mogan, nicknamed “little Venice of Gran Canaria,” enjoy the bridged waterways, white-washed, colorfully trimmed villas at harborside, wrought iron balconies, and floral lanes. The combination creates a decidedly opulent atmosphere, as does the array of boutiques and moored yachts. From your European cruise , sip a drink at one of the many cafes, or dine in style at restaurants with Mediterranean, seafood, or barbecue menus.

Gran Canaria shore excursions can take you to the north coast of the island to visit the fertile green valley area, dotted with papaya, citrus trees, and the striking Strelitzia flowers. Visit a typical island farm and vineyard and taste the fruits of their labor, including wine, cheeses, fruits, and coffee.

Take a guided tour of the island and you’ll see miles of natural beauty and centuries of rich cultural history, including unique architecture. Visit Teror and its famous Basilica, which stands in stark contrast to the small houses in the surrounding area. Be thrilled at the sight of the crater of Bandama, a 2,000-foot high extinct volcano.

6 top luxury alaska cruises for 2024 & beyond.

Book a once-in-a-lifetime adventure to The Great Land on one of these top luxury ships.

Top Luxury Alaska Cruises

Cruising to Alaska on a small luxury ship affords a very different experience than sailing through The Great Land on a larger vessel. On a smaller luxury ship, you'll enjoy the expected perks like fewer passengers and more personalized service – but you'll also physically get closer to the boundless wilderness, abundant wildlife, icy blue glaciers and majestic snow-capped mountains that you've waited a lifetime to see.

While the fares to sail on such vessels are quite a bit higher than those of larger cruise providers, the all-inclusive (or mostly all-inclusive) prices typically include all-suite accommodations with balconies, all meals, alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages, 24-hour room service, Wi-Fi access, gratuities, welcome bottles of sparkling wine, pillow selection, some shore excursions and butler service. Best of all, you won't feel like you're being nickel-and-dimed while on board. As a special touch, the attentive crew members may even learn your name and memorize your preferred pre-dinner cocktail.

Unlike many mainstream lines, most luxury Alaska cruises do not offer pre- and post-cruise tours to extend your adventure. However, you can plan these experiences on your own through third-party providers.

Alaska Tour & Travel has pre-cruise packages that include visits to Denali National Park & Preserve and the small, quirky Alaska towns of Homer and Talkeetna. You can also see a different side of Alaska via a train ride on the Alaska Railroad, take a national parks tour that includes Kenai Fjords National Park or head northbound to Fairbanks , one of the best places in the world to see the northern lights (if you visit during aurora season, from late August to late April). In addition, the company can plan a self-drive tour from Anchorage to Seward, which includes a stay at a wilderness lodge, helicopter flightseeing over Knik Glacier and guided tours in the parks.

The following luxury cruise lines will ensure you make the most of your voyage in Alaska – one of the most magical destinations on Earth.

Silversea Cruises

Silversea Cruises' small luxury ships are designed for adventurers interested in visiting a mix of Alaska's top ports and more rugged, off-the-beaten-track locales. Extended itineraries offer stops in less-visited destinations like the towns of Haines and Wrangell. On board, guests can expect a personalized experience that includes luxurious ocean-view suites with butler service, multiple gourmet dining options, complimentary alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages, and attentive service with one of the highest crew-to-guest ratios in the industry.

Base fares for Silversea's 2024 and 2025 Alaska itineraries start at $3,250 per person. If you upgrade to Silversea 's door-to-door fare (which starts at $5,200 per person), you'll receive private chauffeur service from your home to the airport (and back home upon your return) and round-trip flights, with business class upgrades in some destinations.

Silversea also offers immersive pre- and post-cruise land experiences, departing from Seward, Alaska. Highlights include sightseeing flights over Denali National Park & Preserve or into bear country to see Alaska's magnificent grizzly bears. In Vancouver, travelers can take a flightseeing transfer to Victoria to tour the 55-acre Butchart Gardens or board the Rocky Mountaineer for a two-day train ride through the Canadian Rockies.

Silversea's Alaska itineraries extend from May to September, with voyages ranging between seven and 16 days. The line's newest and largest vessel, the 728-passenger Silver Nova , sails its inaugural Alaska season in 2024 along with two smaller ships, Silver Muse (596 guests) and Silver Shadow (392 guests). There are 35 Alaska voyages available in 2024. In 2025, luxury cruisers can hop aboard one of 45 scheduled voyages on either Silver Nova or the 596-guest Silver Moon .

For a seven-day itinerary, consider a sailing from Seward, Alaska, to Vancouver, British Columbia. This voyage cruises the Hubbard Glacier and the Inside Passage and stops in the Alaska towns of Juneau, Skagway, Sitka and Ketchikan. Complimentary excursions in Ketchikan include a tour of Saxman Native Village; a visit to Bonfire Bay Oyster Farm, featuring a sea-to-table oyster tasting; the Alaskan Cultural, Culinary & Lumberjack show; the Alaskan Lodge Adventure & Seafeast and a day as a fisherman aboard the Aleutian Ballard, as seen on Discovery Channel's "The Deadliest Catch." You can also opt for a Selected Shore Excursion (for an additional cost), such as mountain biking or a private fishing trip.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises

Regent Seven Seas Cruises' elegant Seven Seas Explorer sails the line's Alaska itineraries in 2024 and 2025. The lavish 746-guest ship was coined "The Most Luxurious Ship Ever Built" when it debuted in 2016; among its impressive features are the 3,875-square-foot Regent Suite and a high-end collection of art displayed throughout the ship, including works by Pablo Picasso.

Alaska voyages with Regent in 2024 and 2025 start at $4,799 per person. Upgraded 2-for-1 all-inclusive fares (starting at $5,499 per person) cover elegant all-balcony suite accommodations; round-trip airfare (business class on international flights); a one-night pre-cruise hotel package; free two- or three-night land programs; free unlimited shore excursions; free unlimited beverages (alcoholic and nonalcoholic); complimentary specialty dining; and prepaid gratuities. You'll also receive complimentary airport transfers, unlimited Wi-Fi access and valet laundry service.

Every suite style includes a private balcony, roomy closets and upscale finishes. Concierge Suites (and above) add cozy in-room amenities like cashmere blankets, perfect to bundle up in while you take in the scenery. Meanwhile, Penthouse Suites (and higher) include a private butler who can book excursions, make dinner and spa reservations, unpack your luggage, arrange for a private cocktail soiree in your suite and indulge any other special requests.

Between May and September 2024, Regent sails 22 Alaska voyages. There are 16 Alaska sailings scheduled for the same period in 2025. Itineraries range from seven to 14 nights. For plenty of scenic cruising days, consider a round-trip itinerary from Vancouver departing May 28, 2025. The cruise includes five relaxing days at sea, where you'll enjoy scenic cruising through the Inside Passage (twice), Hubbard Glacier (twice) and Endicott Arm Fjord. Ports of call in Alaska include Wrangell, Juneau , Skagway, Sitka, Seward, Icy Strait (Hoonah) and Ketchikan. You'll also have a full day in Victoria, British Columbia, before returning to Vancouver.

While in Wrangell, consider the Tongass Botanical Forest Walk excursion. Tongass National Forest is the largest national forest in the U.S., with towering old-growth trees and unique flora, fauna and ecosystems. While in the temperate rainforest with your naturalist guide, look for local wildlife like Sitka black-tailed deer, porcupines and birds of prey. Other complimentary excursions at this stop include a round of golf at Muskeg Meadows Golf Course; a canoe trip through Wrangell harbor and nearby islands, and a heritage tour about Tlingit culture and the history of the town.

Nobu restaurant on a Crystal cruise ship.

Recently relaunched Crystal offers just seven voyages in Alaska aboard Crystal Serenity in July and August 2024. The 740-guest luxury vessel was refurbished in 2023 and features the line's signature top-notch service, elegant interiors and suites, and personal butler service in every room category.

Other perks and amenities include plush bathrobes and Sicily's Ortigia bath products; an impressive passenger-to-crew ratio; prepaid gratuities; complimentary beverages; and outstanding cuisine, including Umi Uma (an exclusive Nobu restaurant at sea, available only on Crystal Serenity and Crystal Symphony ). Guests can also feast on Italian cuisine at Osteria d'Ovidio; book an exclusive dining experience at The Vintage Room; indulge in Parisian cafe-style fare at The Bistro; opt for American cuisine at Waterside Restaurant or take their pick of several other casual indoor and alfresco options.

Cruisers also have their selection of unique shore experiences curated by Crystal's parent company A&K Travel Group, such as a ride on the world's largest zip line in Hoonah (Icy Strait Point); dog sledding and glacier flightseeing in Skagway; fishing and wilderness dining in Ketchikan and the Wildlife Quest and Fin Island Lodge experience in Sitka, boasting a feast of Alaska king crab and wild salmon.

Crystal offers seven- and eight-night round-trip voyages from Vancouver , as well as one-way cruises from Vancouver or Seward, Alaska. Select itineraries – like the July 30, 2024, voyage from Vancouver to Seward – offer a scenic cruising day in the Seymour Narrows in British Columbia. On this sailing, you'll also enjoy a day at sea cruising Hubbard Glacier, as well as stops in Ketchikan, Sitka, Hoonah (Icy Strait), Skagway and Sitka in Alaska. Or, opt for the July 2, 2024, round-trip sailing from Vancouver for three scenic cruising days in the Inside Passage, Endicott Arm and the Seymour Narrows.

The line's Aug. 13, 2024, round-trip sailing from Vancouver features a special guest: Manfredi Lefebvre d'Ovidio, the executive chairman of A&K Travel Group. As such, the cruise will include an exclusive gala dinner and other unique experiences. Other special voyages welcome marine biologist and National Geographic photographer Flip Nicklin, who will share personal stories from his extensive career and expert insights about humpback whale habitats and behaviors.

Between May and August 2024, Seabourn Cruise Line will host 20 Alaska voyages aboard the Seabourn Odyssey , before the ship leaves the cruise line in the fall. In 2025, the line offers 27 Alaska sailings on Seabourn Quest. Both yacht-inspired ships accommodate up to 458 guests and feature Seabourn's signature all-inclusive amenities, including luxurious oceanfront suites with verandas; personalized service; complimentary fine wines and premium spirits; complimentary dining; and caviar served throughout the sailing. Ashore, sign up for exclusive programs like shopping for fresh salmon, halibut and Alaska king crab alongside a Seabourn chef.

Guests booking Seabourn Quest for 2025 will be able to sample the line's new dining concept, Solis. Inspired by destinations in the Mediterranean, the menu features a fresh, modern take on traditional dishes and whimsical cocktails. The restaurant is a collaboration with master chef and culinary partner Anton Egger and senior corporate chef Franck Salein. In addition to dishes like salt-encrusted whole branzino and Tuscan-style steak, guests will also find a wide selection of vegan and vegetarian dishes.

The seven-day Alaska Fjords & Canadian Inside Passage itinerary on May 31, 2024, aboard Seabourn Odyssey, sails from Juneau to Vancouver and includes a day in either Tracy Arm or Endicott Arm, depending on the ice conditions. From there, you can take one of the optional guided excursions: Ventures by Seabourn. These tours are an additional cost but offer opportunities for up-close Zodiac, kayaking or catamaran experiences in the wilderness to see glaciers calving and view local wildlife, such as black bears, mountain goats, seals, wolves and seabirds.

You'll also enjoy many days of scenic cruising on this voyage, and have the opportunity for more optional adventures in Rudyerd Bay (Misty Fjords). The ship makes additional stops in Wrangell, Alaska, and Prince Rupert, British Columbia, before disembarking in Vancouver.

If you want to see stunning Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve, then consider booking the seven-day Alaska Inside Passage & Glacier Bay sailing on May 10, 2024, from Vancouver to Juneau. This itinerary also includes the Seymour Narrows and Snow Pass, cruising Queen Island Sound and the Lynn Canal. There's a stop for Ventures by Seabourn activities like kayaking and Zodiac rides in the Inian Islands. The Alaska ports of call on this voyage are Ketchikan, Sitka, Icy Strait Point and Haines. You'll disembark in Juneau.

The ship features elegant staterooms and suites, a library, a spa, a hair salon and a gym. Guests will be treated to movies in the theater, wine tastings and cooking demonstrations throughout the expedition. All fine dining meals, 24-hour room service, an open bar (including an in-room minibar) and complimentary and unlimited Wi-Fi access are covered in the pricing.

Two of PONTANT's eight-night voyages from Vancouver to Sitka are in partnership with Smithsonian Journeys and are curated for English-speaking travelers. Fares for these expeditions include transfers to and from the ship and a shore excursion in each port. On board, you can attend talks and discussions hosted by two Smithsonian Journeys experts: geologist Scott Burns and natural history filmmaker John Grabowska.

On these voyages, there is a sea day after departing Vancouver. You'll cruise through the Johnstone Strait, where you'll have an excellent chance of seeing humpback whales and orcas. After a day spent in the Inside Passage, the ship will call on the village of Metlakatla, Alaska, on the western coast of Annette Island, which is home to the Tsimshians from British Columbia. Other unique Alaska ports of call in this itinerary include the commercial fishing town of Petersburg, the Tlingit village of Kake and the small fishing community of Alfin Cove.

The Points Guy

The 6 best Royal Caribbean ships for adults

MSN has partnered with The Points Guy for our coverage of credit card products. MSN and The Points Guy may receive a commission from card issuers.

Royal Caribbean is known for some of the world’s largest cruise ships , over-the-top onboard amenities and some of the best entertainment at sea — perfect for young families. While Royal Caribbean does not run adults-only cruises, grownups traveling without children will be glad to know that certain ships seem tailor-made for couples, mom-and-daughter duos or parents traveling with their adult children.

With over 25 ships in its fleet, Royal Caribbean has a ship for every type of traveler, not just families with young kids. Whether you’re looking for fewer upper-deck attractions and more places to relax outside or upscale dining and entertainment for a date night after an exciting day in port, this cruise line has you covered.

Also, most ships offer adults-only pools and lounges where you can escape from the younger cruisers on board if you so choose. Cruisers looking for a party scene can enjoy nightclubs open until the wee hours of the morning, and foodies can find an elevated dining experience at the line’s many specialty restaurants.

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG’s cruise newsletter .

For the avid traveler looking to get away from the standard Caribbean sailings, some of the line’s ships have sailings that go to unique ports of call where you can immerse yourself in a new culture and indulge in local culinary delights.

If you’re looking for a more grownup vacation, these are the six best Royal Caribbean cruise ships for adults.

Rhapsody of the Seas

Don’t overlook Rhapsody of the Seas just because it’s one of the oldest ships in the Royal Caribbean fleet. It still has lots to offer adults looking for a fun getaway, especially to Europe, where you can book back-to-back port-intensive cruises for a customized vacation.

Rhapsody of the Seas offers some unique sailings, including a two-night sailing from Israel that can be tacked onto longer Mediterranean sailings, such as five-night Greek Isles cruises . For an even longer sailing, consider the 14-night transatlantic cruise , which stops in Alicante, Spain, the Canary Islands and the Bahamas.

Related: Best Mediterranean cruises for every type of traveler

The ship is also one of Royal Caribbean’s smallest, carrying 1,998 passengers at double occupancy (compared to 5,734 on Wonder of the Seas ). Yet it’s got much to offer adults looking to relax after a long day of sightseeing. Book a relaxing treatment, such as a couples massage or solo facial, in the serene oasis of the Vitality Spa. Or take a dip in the Solarium, the adults-only retreat with loungers, pools and panoramic ocean views.

In the evening, watch the sunset at the ship’s signature Viking Crown Lounge, where floor-to-ceiling windows surround clusters of cozy lounge chairs just beckoning adults to linger over their favorite drink and enjoy the view. After dark, the lounge becomes a dance club with a DJ.

Grownups can also enjoy evening dance parties and movies under the stars on the pool deck as the ship sails to its next port of call. Chops Grille, the onboard steakhouse, provides an intimate setting for a romantic dinner for two.

Anthem of the Seas

Adults looking for unique onboard activities, mixed with a manageable size and more grownup vibe, will enjoy the 4,180-passenger Anthem of the Seas .

On board, the North Star, a pod-like viewing deck unique to this class of ships, suspends travelers 300 feet above the ocean for incredible views. We recommend taking the ride on a port day to get a birds-eye view of the shore and city skylines. For a different kind of thrill, try the RipCord by iFLY skydiving simulator, which gives you the sensation of free falling.

Of course, no cruise is complete without dinner and a show. One of the more unique things about Anthem of the Seas is its four smaller main dining rooms rather than one enormous main restaurant. Of the four venues, The Grande is the most elegant and tends to draw in more adults. After dinner, head to the theater to see “We Will Rock You,” a musical tribute to Queen that originated in London’s West End. Anthem is the only Royal Caribbean ship to offer this production.

Related: The craziest attractions you’ll find on a cruise ship

The ship also caters to adults with the time and desire for longer vacations, with seven- to 14-night summer cruises to the Norwegian fjords, Canary Islands and the Mediterranean. If you want to stay stateside, there are seven and eight-night sailings that go from Cape Liberty to Royal Caribbean’s private island, Perfect Day at CocoCay . You can find a more grownup vibe at the Chill Island beach or the swim-up bar in the Oasis Lagoon pool. The line has hinted that an adults-only beach is coming soon.

Quantum of the Seas

The longer the cruise, the fewer the kids. So, for a very adult Royal Caribbean cruise, choose the 4,180-passenger Quantum of the Seas for its longer sailings to Hawaii , the South Pacific or Australia . You’ll visit some of the most beautiful islands in the world and find far fewer kids on board due to the duration and school-year timing of the itineraries.

For an adult-focused cruise to Alaska , try Quantum’s weeklong voyages to the Last Frontier from May through September. The ship sails to such exciting ports of call as Skagway, Sitka and Ketchikan and offers scenic cruising through the Endicott Arm and by Dawes Glacier.

You’ll find plenty of kids on board during Alaska sailings. However, adults rarely have to go far to find a place without kids. (Plus, the ship’s excellent kids club keeps many young cruisers entertained and out of sight.)

Adults can seek out age-appropriate fun at the onboard escape room, watch an outdoor movie under the stars or embrace their inner child by shooting hoops or driving bumper cars at the SeaPlex. By day, enjoy a drink or snack and take in the 270-degree views in the Two70 lounge. Return at night when the space transforms into an immersive theater using high-tech elements to put on musical performances.

If you’re looking for great views from the pool or hot tub, head to the indoor, adults-only Solarium, where you never have to worry about the cold Alaska weather or the hot Hawaiian sun making you uncomfortable. The forward-facing venue offers unobstructed views from the plentiful lounge chairs around the windows.

Related: 35 Royal Caribbean cruise tips and tricks that will make your voyage better

Quantum of the Seas, like sister ship Anthem, has a multitude of dining venues that serve great dishes around the ship. A meal at Wonderland is worth the additional cost because it’s as much a feast for the eyes as it is for the taste buds. The molecular gastronomy menu features delightful bites of pork belly, tuna sashimi and buffalo chicken presented in a playful way that guests might not expect (and most kids may not appreciate).

Mariner of the Seas

The 3,114-passenger Mariner of the Seas is an ideal ship for multigenerational cruises, with plenty of activities to please everyone from young adults to grandparents.

Older adults play cards or read in the serene library and card room or enjoy the ocean views from the Solarium. Young adults can pack their day with high-energy activities, such as laser tag, ice skating and boogie boarding on the FlowRider surf simulator.

At night, everyone in the family can come together for a meal. Reserve a table at Jamie’s Italian for a special group dinner. All of the pasta is made fresh, including the signature truffle tagliatelle, where thick noodles are tossed in truffle cream with fresh truffles and a hint of nutmeg. The fan-favorite “meat plank” is easy to share and laden with salami, prosciutto, mozzarella and focaccia.

Afterward, the group can catch the ice skating show (you’re never too old to enjoy the musical numbers and colorful costumes) or musical performances in the main theater before the younger set heads to the bars and the older generation turns in for the night.

Mariner of the Seas sails from Galveston, Texas, and Port Canaveral, Florida, to destinations across the Bahamas and Caribbean. Shorter four or five-night sailings are a great way to fit in a long weekend away, especially for younger adults with less time off work. Longer eight-night sailings to the islands make for a true getaway.

Jewel of the Seas

Adults who relish scenic cruising should look no further than the 2,702-passenger Jewel of the Seas . The beautiful ship travels to a wide range of destinations, with fall foliage sailings in Canada and New England , adventurous itineraries to the Arctic Circle and northern destinations like Iceland and Greenland, and traditional cruises to the Caribbean.

The smaller ship is more desirable for adults looking to enjoy the destinations they are visiting rather than trying out the latest attractions at sea. The Viking Crown Lounge offers a quiet getaway during the day for looking out over the passing scenery and a hyped-up dance club at night. You can even get great landscape views from the glass elevators running along the sides of the ship.

No matter where you sail, Jewel of the Seas offers plenty of onboard activities suitable for adults. Take an all-access tour of the inner parts of the ship most people never see, test your luck at table games or slot machines in the casino, or dance the night away at the ’70s disco party.

Foodies and wine enthusiasts may never tire of the many bars and lounges on Jewel of the Seas. Try a variety of wines, either by the glass or the bottle, at Vintages wine bar, people watch and enjoy a cocktail at the Centrum lobby bar, or grab a seat at Vortex, where the spinning bar slowly rotates everyone around the room.

When it’s time to eat, head to Giovanni’s Table, where Italian dishes are prepared and served like they are at your nonna’s house. The kids might turn up their noses, but grownups will love the signature dishes, such as the grilled octopus appetizer and the housemade linguine with clams entree.

Harmony of the Seas

Harmony of the Seas is one of the largest cruise ships in the world, carrying 5,497 passengers at double occupancy. It’s got activities for all ages and interests, with themed areas of the ships – called neighborhoods – dedicated to different pursuits, such as entertainment or swimming and sports. Adults can have thrilling experiences during the day, find their zen before heading off to dinner and enjoy entertainment late into the night, all by moving between a few decks.

Adventurous adults will love zip lining over the top of the Boardwalk or sliding down the Ultimate Abyss, a 10-story dry slide. Those looking for a more laid-back vacation can book treatment at the Vitality Spa, sample different varietals at a wine tasting or learn how to make sushi.

The ship’s Central Park area is romantic and made for adults. It’s a fantastic place to sit back with a cocktail and people-watch. Here, you’ll find upscale shops, restaurants and bars with indoor and outdoor seating set amid a garden of real plants and trees. To spend a full evening in Central Park, start at the Trellis Bar for wine or cocktails, then head to 150 Central Park, where the menu highlights seasonal ingredients.

Those looking for a more exciting evening will want to hang around Royal Promenade, which feels more like a buzzy city street than a cruise ship deck. Here, an English pub, a bar staffed by robots and a Latin-inspired lounge all come together to make for a fun night out. For a full night of entertainment, check out a live performance of “Grease” in the ship’s main theater.

Harmony of the Seas sets sail from Galveston and Miami, taking cruisers to the Caribbean on four- to eight-night sailings. The Miami sailings all stop at Perfect Day at CocoCay, St. Thomas, Puerto Rico and Honduras.

Bottom line

The best Royal Caribbean ships for adults may still have kids on board. However, they also offer something extra for grownups — whether that’s a more intimate ship size, out-of-the-ordinary itineraries, incredible choice of bars and restaurants, serene hangouts or thrilling attractions for active adults.

No matter which ship you choose, cruising with Royal Caribbean offers the ability to visit some of the world’s most sought-after destinations on a ship that teems with varied activities. While you won’t find adults-only Royal Caribbean cruises, you can tailor your cruise experience on these six ships to focus on more grown-up pursuits.
