How To Close Safari Windows on Your Device

Are you looking for a way to close all of your Safari windows quickly? You’ve come to the right place! In this blog post, we’ll be discussing how to close Safari windows on any device, whether it be a Mac, PC, or mobile device.

First off, let’s discuss how to close Safari on a Mac. On a Mac, you can easily close your open Safari windows using the following steps:

1. Tap and hold on to the tabs icon in the toolbar. 2. A menu will appear with options to open new tabs and close existing ones. 3. Tap ‘Close All [Number] Tabs’ to close every tab you have open in Safari at the same time. 4. Alternatively, you can place the pointer over the tab in the tab bar and then click the Close button on the left side of each tab to close them one by one. 5. To close all other tabs at once, Control-click the tab you want to keep open then choose ‘Close Other Tabs’ from the menu that appears.

If you don’t want to bother with these steps and would rather force quit Safari altogether, then press the ‘Command-Option-Esc’ keys which will launch the ‘Force Quit Applications’ window, or click on the Apple logo in the menu bar and select ‘Force Quit’ then choose ‘Safari’ followed by clicking ‘Force Quit button.

Now let’s discuss how to go about closing Safari windows on Windows PCs and laptops:

1. Go ahead and launch your Task Manager (Ctrl + Alt + Del) followed by clicking ‘More Details’ if needed (this will show all running processes). 2 . From there locate ‘Safari’ or ‘WebKit’ processes (one for each window opened) and click them one by one then hit ‘End Task’. 3 . After all instances of Safari are closed you may need to reboot your computer for changes to take effect completely.

Lastly, let’s take a look at how we can go about closing our Safari windows using our mobile devices such as iPhones or iPads:

1 . Open up your Settings app followed by selecting ‘Safari’.

2 . Scroll down until you come across ‘Clear History and Website Data’.

3 . Tap that option followed by confirming your selection when prompted with a warning message – this will clear all website data including cookies & browsing history as well as any stored passwords so make sure you remember them first!

4 . You can also try Force quitting apps from iOS 11+ devices which is done by pressing firmly & quickly on an app icon until it starts wiggling followed by tapping X which will delete that particular instance of Safari from running in the background (this won’t delete any website data though).

We’ve successfully discussed how to close our open windows in Safari across different platforms – hopefully, this guide was helpful if not feel free to leave us any questions regarding this topic below!

How to close, maximise and minimise apps and windows on Mac

close safari window mac

How do I minimise windows on a Mac? And how do I make the minimised window go back to normal or fullscreen view?

Macs are easy to use, and few things come more naturally to modern users than the desktop and windows metaphor. But lots of newcomers to Mac OS X (especially those coming over from Windows) find it tricky to close, maximise and minimise app windows.

In this guide we’re going to take a good look at the nuts and bolts of windows management in Mac OS X: not just minimising and maximising windows, but opening, closing and even zooming windows. The desktop and windows metaphor forms the bulk of your interaction with a Mac, after all. We’ll look at how to manage apps and windows on your Mac.

How to open and close windows on a Mac

How to zoom a Window on a Mac using the Menu bar

Windows are the rectangular mini-screens that display information from an app across part of your monitor display (or all of it, if that window is running in fullscreen mode). A window shows information related to an app. Some apps (like iTunes) only have one window; others have a window for each document that you have.

Typically, when you click on an app’s icon in Applications (or in the Dock), it will open a new window for that app. If the app already has a window open, it will switch to the window instead. Here are the ways you can open a new window:

  • Choose on File > New to open a second window (sometimes it will be New Window, New Blank Document or a similar term).
  • Press Command + N.
  • Command-click the icon in the Dock and choose New Window (not available in all apps).

Closing a window is just as easy. There are lots of different ways to close a window:

  • Click the red close button in the top-left of a Window.
  • Choose File > Close Window.
  • Press Command-W.
  • Choose File > Close All Windows.

One way Mac OS X differs from Windows is that when you close the last window, the app itself stays open. If you look at the Dock, you will still see a small dot underneath the app icon to indicate that it’s still open. If you want to quit the app, you will need to choose the app’s name in the Menu bar and Quit (or press Command-Q).

How to Minimise windows on a Mac

Minimize, zoom button on a Mac

If you keep opening windows, you’ll soon have more than you can fit on the screen at once. One way that you can manage windows is to minimise the ones that you aren’t currently using. Minimise shrinks the window down to the right-hand side of the Dock at the bottom of the screen.

  • Click the yellow Minimise button in the top-right of the window.
  • Choose Window > Minimise.
  • Press Command-M.
  • Press Command-Option-M to minimise all windows belonging to that app.

Learning to press Command-M (and Command- Option -M, also known as Command-Alt-M) are some of the handiest shortcuts you can know. They quickly enable you to get rid of windows that you don’t want right now, but will want to use later.

Most people just click on a window’s small preview icon in the Dock to return to it, but there are a few different ways to return to a minimised window.

  • Click the icon in the Dock.
  • Command-click the icon and choose Open.
  • Choose Window from the app’s menu and select the window from the list at the bottom.
  • Choose Window > Bring all to Front.
  • Hold Option and choose Window > Arrange to Front (this cascades all the windows).
  • In Safari, you can also choose Window > Merge All Windows. This command opens all the minimised windows as tabs.

How to Maximise (or Zoom) windows on a Mac

Full Screen button on Mac

One thing you need to learn as a Mac user is that you don’t “maximise” windows, you “zoom” them. And from Yosemite onwards, zoom has been put on the back-burner in favour of Full Screen.

To take a window into fullscreen view, you click on the green Full Screen icon in the top-left of the window. Click it again to go back to standard view. Or choose View > Exit Full Screen (Command-Option-F).

Zoom is a different creature entirely, and it’s not quite. The green button used to be zoom in OS X, and you can still access zoom by holding down Option and clicking the green button.

But zoom isn’t quite the same as maximise on a Windows machine. On Windows, it automatically fills the whole display, while Zoom on a Mac takes the window to its optimal largest size. So it may not fill the whole screen, but will rather take up as much space as it should.

You can also choose Window > Zoom to zoom the window. Most users these days switch to Full Screen instead.

You can also resize a window in OS X by dragging any of the four corners of a window. The corners enable you to shrink (or grow) each window to any size you want, and then you can use Window > Zoom to return to the optimal size.

How to close apps on iPad or iPhone

iOS is well built in order to deal with multiple apps in the background, so you don’t have to worry about apps taking up battery life or resources.

However, if an app is misbehaving and you want to close it, it’s easy enough to forcefully stop it.

First you need to open the App Switcher, to do this double-press (not tap) the Home button and you’ll be presented with various apps. Scroll through until you find the app you want to force quit, and simply swipe it away by flicking upwards – you can close as many as you want.

Once you’ve finished closing the apps you want, either tap on one of the apps in the App Switcher menu or press the home button.

How to Close Tabs and Windows on Your Mac

close safari window mac

You can open as many Safari tabs and windows as you would like in Safari on your Mac. Sometimes you may end up with so many open tabs and windows that you want to close all or some of them to get rid of the clutter; having too many tabs or windows open can be overwhelming and make it difficult to focus on what you’re doing. In this article, I explain several ways you can do this.

Tabs in browsers allow you to have multiple pages open at the same time without having to juggle multiple windows.

How to close a browser tab on Mac

  • This is probably the easiest one. Move your pointer over the tab where the site’s address shows, and a close (x) button will appear. The X button will not appear until you hover your pointer. Click that to close the tab.

Close X button

  • Move your cursor over the tab where the site’s title is displayed in the tab bar. Then right-click (or Control -click) and select Close Tab .

Close Tab click

  • You can also click on File in the Safari menu bar and select Close Tab while you have that tab open.

File > Close Tabs

  • The Command – W shortcut also closes the current, open tab.

How to close all browser tabs on Mac

  • Move your cursor over a tab, right-click (or Control – click ) and select Close Other Tabs . This will cause all other tabs to be closed.

Close other tabs

  • I often use this to close all tabs (and windows): Press and hold the Command key and then keep pressing the W key. This will close tabs one at a time, but it will just take a few seconds to close all tabs.
  • This is very similar to the one above this, but even faster. Simply press and hold down the Command and W keys together until all tabs are closed. This is pretty fast. This will close every tab (and window) open until you stop holding the keys down.

How to close Safari windows on Mac

  • The most common and easy way is to click the red close (x) button located in the top-left corner of the window to close a single window.

Close button corner

  • You can click on File > Close Window in the menu bar.

Close Window menu

  • You can use the Command – Option – W keys to close all open windows. Or alternatively, click on File > Close All Windows from the menu bar.
  • If you press Command – W , you can close a single window.

When you close windows in Safari on your Mac, Safari will still continue to run. This does not completely quit Safari. To quit Safari, go to Safari > Quit Safari in Safari.

About the keyboard shortcuts used to close tabs and windows

  • The above-mentioned keyboard shortcuts will work in Safari and other browsers, like Chrome, as well.
  • They will also work in Finder windows and other app windows.

How to Close All Open Windows or Tabs on Mac

Learn how to close all open windows/folders/tabs on a Mac with three different methods.

  • To close a single-window on Mac, whether it’s a browser tab or a Finder window, while inside the window you want to close, hold down CMD and hit W on your keyboard once.
  • To close all open windows or browser tabs on Mac, simply continue to hold down CMD while tabbing W . Your windows will close quickly one at a time until all windows are closed. It will take a few seconds, depending on how many open windows you have. You can also just hold down CMD + W (no W tabbing needed) to do it even faster.
  • To close all windows on your Mac at the same time, hold down CMD + Option + W. If you do this while a Finder window is open, it will shut down all open Finder windows, but not other apps’ windows.

Good to know: be careful using the close all windows at the same time shortcut (CMD + Option + W). E.g. if your Chrome browser is open while you run the command it will shut down every open Chrome browser client on your Mac (not just the client you’re inside), which might not be what you want.

How to Close Windows When Quitting Apps on a Mac

Stop your Mac from reopening windows when you relaunch apps by changing this system setting.

If you're a Mac user, you may have experienced the following; you relaunch an app only to find all its windows intact. Why? Because by default, macOS doesn't close windows when you quit an app.

Does this mean you have to manually close app windows to prevent them from reopening when you relaunch an app? Not necessarily, because we'll show you how to close windows automatically when quitting an app on your Mac.

Closing Windows vs. Quitting Apps

Before diving into the solution, it's important to understand the difference between closing windows and quitting apps on a Mac. When you close an app window, you're getting rid of the window but keeping the app running in the background, which you'll see if you check your Mac's Activity Monitor .

On the other hand, quitting an app means temporarily closing its windows and terminating it completely. To check if you've quit an app, look for a dot underneath it in the Dock. If it's there, the app is still running. If it isn't, you've quit the app successfully.

Speaking of quitting apps, did you know you can quit multiple apps quickly on your Mac ? With the help of a simple keyboard shortcut, you can quit all your apps in a matter of seconds. This will come in handy if you're working with lots of apps and don't want to go through the hassle of quitting them manually one after the other.

How to Close Windows When Quitting Mac Apps

Configuring your Mac to automatically close an app's windows when you quit the app is straightforward. Here's what you need to do.

  • Click on the Apple menu in the menu bar and select System Settings .
  • Select Desktop & Dock in the sidebar.
  • Under the option labeled Windows & Apps , toggle on Close windows when quitting an application .

If you have dozens of tabs open in Safari on iPhone or iPad and need to clear them out quickly, it can be tedious to "X" them out one at a time. Luckily, there are two ways to close all your Safari tabs at once, and they also work in Private Browsing mode. Here's how.

First, open "Safari" on your iPhone or iPad. While on any page, locate the tab switcher button, which looks like two overlapping squares. On the iPad, you'll find it in the upper-right corner of the screen.

On the iPhone, it's in the lower-right corner of the screen.

Place your finger on the tab switcher button and hold it there for a moment, preforming a "long press." In the menu that pops up, select "Close All Tabs." (There will be a number in the choice that lists the number of open tabs.)

When Safari asks you to confirm with another pop-up, tap "Close All Tabs" again. After that, all of your browser tabs will close.

There's another way to quickly close all tabs in Safari on iPhone and iPad. First, open "Safari," then tap the tab switcher button once.

On the tab switcher screen, locate the "Done" button, which is located in the upper-right corner of the screen on the iPad and in the lower-right corner of the screen on the iPhone.

Long-press the "Done" button — place and hold your finger there for a moment until a pop-up appears. In the pop-up, select "Close All Tabs." The exact name of the pop-up action will vary, depending on the number of tabs you have open.

Safari will ask you to confirm closing all the tabs with another pop-up message. Select "Close All Tabs" again. Then all of your Safari tabs will close instantly. The same action works in Private Browsing mode. Pretty handy!

If you accidentally closed all of your tabs and would like to get them back, you can retrieve them one at a time as long as you aren't in Private Browsing mode . Just tap the tab switcher button, then long-press the "+" button until a "Recently Closed Tabs" list appears . From there you can tap on entries in the list to open them again in Safari. Good luck!

To begin, launch the Safari app on your iPad and ensure that multiple tabs or windows are open. Once you have multiple tabs open, tap the icon in the upper-right corner of the Safari app that resembles two overlapping squares. This action will transition you to the Tab View, where you can see all your open tabs displayed in a visually accessible manner.

In the Tab View, you can effortlessly navigate through your open tabs by swiping left or right on the screen. This allows you to preview the content of each tab and identify the ones you wish to close. Once you've located the tab you want to close, simply swipe it towards the top of the screen. As you perform this gesture, the tab will smoothly disappear from the Tab View, indicating that it has been successfully closed.

If you have multiple tabs to close, you can repeat this process for each tab until you've cleared out the desired windows. This method provides a visual and interactive way to manage your open tabs, enabling you to swiftly close individual windows without the need to navigate through complex menus or settings.

Furthermore, the Tab View allows you to gain a comprehensive overview of your open tabs, making it easier to identify and prioritize the tabs you want to close. This visual approach to tab management can enhance your browsing experience by providing a clear and organized view of your open windows, allowing you to make informed decisions about which tabs to keep open and which ones to close.

This method offers a user-friendly and visually engaging way to manage your open tabs, empowering you to take control of your browsing experience with ease and efficiency.

Method 2: Using the App Switcher

Another effective method for closing Safari windows on your iPad involves utilizing the App Switcher. The App Switcher provides a convenient way to manage and close multiple apps, including Safari windows, with just a few simple gestures.

To access the App Switcher, start by swiping up from the bottom of the screen and pausing in the middle of the screen. This action will reveal the App Switcher, displaying all the open apps and Safari windows in a visually accessible layout. You can then locate the Safari windows you wish to close by swiping left or right within the App Switcher, allowing you to preview the content of each window.

Once you've identified the Safari window you want to close, simply swipe it upwards off the screen. As you perform this gesture, the Safari window will smoothly disappear from the App Switcher, indicating that it has been successfully closed. If you have multiple Safari windows to close, you can repeat this process for each window until you've cleared out the desired tabs.

The App Switcher provides a seamless and efficient way to manage your open Safari windows, allowing you to swiftly close multiple windows without the need to navigate through the Safari app itself. This method streamlines the process of closing Safari windows, enabling you to declutter your browsing sessions and optimize the performance of your iPad.

Furthermore, the App Switcher offers a comprehensive view of all your open apps and Safari windows, making it easy to identify and prioritize the windows you want to close. This visual approach to app management empowers you to efficiently navigate through your open Safari windows, ensuring that you can quickly close the tabs that are no longer needed.

To begin, navigate to the home screen of your iPad and locate the Settings app. Once you've accessed the Settings app, scroll down the left-hand menu until you find "Safari." Tap on the "Safari" option to access a range of settings and preferences related to the Safari browser on your iPad.

Within the Safari settings, you'll find an option labeled "Close Tabs." Tapping on this option will present you with several choices for managing your open Safari windows. One of the available options is "Manually," which allows you to manually close individual tabs as needed.

By selecting the "Manually" option, you can effectively close multiple Safari windows at once. This approach provides a convenient way to declutter your browsing sessions and ensure that your open tabs remain organized and manageable. Once you've chosen the "Manually" option, you can proceed to close individual tabs within the Safari app as needed.

Additionally, the Settings app offers a centralized location for managing various aspects of your iPad's functionality, including Safari window management. This method allows you to access Safari-related settings and preferences in a structured and intuitive manner, providing a seamless way to customize your browsing experience.

How to take a screenshot on Mac

In the age of digital technology, the ability to quickly take screenshots has become an essential skill in computer use. Screenshots can be used to save essential information, illustrate instructions or reports, catch screen bugs, and capture moments from videos and games.

On Mac computers, there are various ways to take screenshots, all of which are simple. Whether you need to capture the entire screen, a window, or just a portion of the screen, macOS provides useful keyboard shortcuts and tools for capturing, editing, and sharing images. Using these tools can help you enhance your workflow and interact more effectively with digital content.

How to screenshot on Mac

macOS has numerous handy options for taking screenshots, including capturing the entire screen, a specific area, or just a single window.

Capture a picture of the entire screen

In order to learn how to take a screenshot on Mac of the entire screen, press Command (⌘) + Shift (⇧) + 3. When you hit these keys, a screenshot is immediately created and the file is saved on the desktop by default.

The screenshot is stored in PNG format, with date and time of its capture included in its name. This helps to easily and quickly find the file you need. You can use third-party programs to manage screenshots or change the settings in the Screenshot app if you would rather store screenshots somewhere else.

Capture a portion of the screen

Use the keyboard shortcut Command (⌘) + Shift (⇧) + 4 to capture a portion of the screen. When you press these keys, the cursor changes to a crosshair, allowing you to click and drag it to select the area you want to highlight. This allows you to capture only the most important information and eliminate unnecessary items. If you need to cancel the screen capture once you start dragging, click the Escape key.

Capture selected window

To take a snapshot of a window without superfluous desktop items, use Command (⌘) + Shift (⇧) + 4 and press the spacebar. The cursor changes to a camera icon, and you may hover it over the selected window. To take a screenshot of the selected window, click it.

To prevent capturing the window shadow in the screenshot, hold down the Option key while clicking. This allows you to create a high-quality screenshot suitable for presentations or documentation, where everything needs to look perfect.

Mac's snapshot functionality gives users flexibility and options. With a variety of methods available, every user can find a way to meet their needs, whether it's a quick full-screen screenshot, a detailed screenshot of a specific area, or an image of a selected window.

Using the Screenshot utility

On Mac, the Screenshot utility allows you to capture a screenshot or video recording of the full screen, a specific area or just a window.

How to access the Screenshot utility

To access the Screenshot utility on a Mac, use one of the following steps:

Use the keyboard shortcut Command (⌘) + Shift (⇧) + 5

Find the Screenshot program using Spotlight search by typing its name and pressing Enter

Open the Applications folder → Utilities and launch Screenshot from there

Description of modes and settings

After launching the utility, a toolbar appears on the screen offering various modes: capture the entire screen, selected window or area, record the entire screen or selected area.

In addition to the mode, you can adjust several other parameters: the location to save screenshots, timer, which microphone to use to record sound during the video recording. These settings are available in Options in the utility's toolbar.

Tips for saving and managing screenshots

Select a save location: In Options , you can select where you want to save screenshots and videos. It may be the desktop, documents, clipboard, mail, messages, preview or any other location you need. Using the clipboard allows you to rapidly paste the screenshot into another application without creating a file on the disk

Use the timer to postpone screenshot capturing by 5 or 10 seconds. This is especially handy when you need to get the screen ready for capture, such as by displaying a menu or activating a specific application state

Preview and edit: After capturing a screenshot, a thumbnail displays in the lower right corner of the screen. When you click this thumbnail, the snapshot opens in the Preview application, where you can edit the image, add comments, and crop it before saving

Taking screenshots and screen recordings is easy using Mac's Screenshot utility, which includes various settings and tools to get exactly the result you want.

Editing screenshots

Mac offers a wide range of tools for editing screenshots, from basic functions built into the operating system to advanced capabilities provided by third-party applications.

Markers and text: Highlight significant elements and provide textual explanations

Shapes: Using arrows, circles, rectangles, and other shapes might help to highlight important elements

Signatures: Add signatures to images for more thorough descriptions

Color and size: All panel tools allow you to change the color and size of the screenshot to emphasize important information or attract attention to certain portions.

Advanced editing tools on Mac

macOS Sonoma 14.4: Reasons Not to Update

Since Apple unveiled macOS Sonoma 14.4 on March 7 , the transition to the latest software update has not been entirely smooth for everyone, and a number of issues have been reported by users that significantly impact their daily workflow.

Reasons to Not Upgrade to macOS Sonoma 14

USB Hub and Monitor Ports

Lost Connectivity

Some users have experienced connectivity issues with USB hubs and monitors with USB ports since updating to macOS 14.4, with several reports of mice, keyboards, and other peripherals no longer being detected. While Apple works on a fix, a handful of users have had some success by changing the setting "Allow accessories to connect" to "Ask for new accessories" under the Security section of System Settings ➝ Privacy & Security.

Java Processes

Unexpected Terminations

Oracle last week warned that the macOS 14.4 update can cause Java processes to " terminate unexpectedly " on Macs. The issue affects all Java versions from Java 8 to the early access builds of JDK 22, and there is no workaround available. Affected users might be unable to return to a stable configuration unless they have a complete backup of their systems prior to the OS update.

Printer Operation

Removed or Corrupted Drivers

The update may remove or corrupt printer drivers . Specifically, the core CUPS software for printing operations over a network seems to be removed. HP printers in particular appear to be affected, but the exact commonalities between the reports, such as the use of Microsoft Defender or JAMF mobile device management software , are not entirely clear. Some users have found a workaround by granting Full Disk Access to certain processes in System Settings ➝ Privacy & Security. Despite these attempts, a comprehensive solution has not yet been found.

PACE/iLok Protections

Audio Unit Plugins Crash

There have been reports of compatibility issues with PACE products, including the iLok License Manager , connected to Apple silicon Macs running macOS 14.4. The problem specifically impacts plugins from various manufacturers that are safeguarded by PACE/iLok, including those made by Universal Audio , when used with host DAWs such as Logic Pro. Temporarily setting a DAW and the iLok License Manager application to run in Rosetta mode appears to circumvent the issue.

iCloud Drive

Destroys Saved Versions

Users running macOS 14.4 that have "Optimize Mac Storage" enabled should be aware that they are at risk of losing all previously saved versions of a file if they opt to remove it from iCloud Drive local storage. Versions are normally created automatically when users save files using apps that work with the version system in macOS. If you have already updated, either do not save files to iCloud Drive at all, or turning off Optimize Mac Storage. To perform the latter in System Settings, click your Apple ID, select iCloud, and then toggle off the switch next to "Optimize Mac Storage."

Consider Not Updating

If you anticipate that any of these problems could significantly impact your daily operations or productivity, it may be prudent to delay updating to the latest version of macOS Sonoma until Apple addresses these concerns with a subsequent fix. Have you identified any other issues since updating? Let us know in the comments and we might include them here if they turn out to be commonplace.

Safari Profiles - New windows open with: Tabs for -profile-

I really hope someone here can help me understand this. The simple task I'm trying to accomplish is when I open a new window for a particular Safari profile, like Work, it should open a few specific tabs, like Google and Apple. I know it's possible, because I somehow set it by accident. Safari's profile settings have this option, to set new windows to open with "Tabs for -profilehere-".

close safari window mac

Now, I know this will do what I'm trying to accomplish, because I did it by accident today. When I opened a new window in the Work profile, the three tabs I'd had open earlier in a window were part of it. I couldn't change what those three sites were, and I've tried everything. I've created new tab groups from open tabs, new empty tab groups, new profiles to try recreate it, changing the setting to something else and changing it back to Tabs for Work. Nothing has worked at all.

I've just spent the last 3 hours this morning trying to talk to Apple support about this (first through chat, then over the phone), and I haven't been able to get a simple answer to the question: What are "Tabs for ____" in Profiles settings for Safari, and how are they chosen? One technician had me delete the only profile I'd gotten to open a specific set of tabs for new windows, and I stupidly agreed and now can't even show that it IS possible anymore. Support, in the end, told me that no one I will be able to reach at Apple will be able to give me an answer to this, since all they are trained to do is direct customers to the support articles already available on the website, and my best chance will be to ask the community. I don't feel like I'm asking for the moon just trying to get someone to explain what this setting is and how it works, I kind of feel like I'm going crazy. I've spent weeks before today trying to figure this out, and I really do believe I've read every single article available about Safari profiles. This is seemingly never explained.

If anyone here knows how this works, I'm really at a loss here. I'd be really grateful for any assistance. Thanks.

Do you ever spend ages trying to figure something out, then as soon as you ask for help it comes to you?

I figured this out, so for anyone else that has this question, I'll save you the massive headache. The "Tabs for ____" option is the Favorites you have saved in the Favorites folder you choose above this. If you want new windows to open with site a, b and c, save them in the profile's Favorites folder, then those will open on a new window. Hallelujah.

Google chrome update warning issued for all windows, mac users.

An “update now” warning has just been issued for Google’s billion-plus desktop Chrome users, fixing multiple serious threats. There’s also a major new update for Windows users that will actually change the way you use Chrome…

Update now warning issued for all Chrome users

Just as Google releases its latest Chrome update, with the usual “update now” advisory, the world’s leading browser is also rapidly introducing new enhancements for its 3 billion users around the world.

Chrome 123 fixes 12 security issues, of which one is marked as high risk—an object lifecycle vulnerability in its V8 engine. The five medium risk fixes include two that impact Apple iPhone users. Most of the major fixed were identified externally. As ever, “access to bug details and links may be kept restricted until a majority of users are updated with a fix. [Google] will also retain restrictions if the bug exists in a third party library that other projects similarly depend on, but haven’t yet fixed.”

The new stable desktop release for Windows, Mac and Linux is just out—mobile users should check for updates in the usual way. The iOS update—per the above warnings—was released a week ago and can be installed immediately.

Suffice to say, on any platform you’re running Chrome, apply the update as soon as you get chance. Once vulnerabilities are published and fixed, the chance of exploitation of unpatched systems increases rapidly as time runs out.

Best High-Yield Savings Accounts Of 2024

Best 5% interest savings accounts of 2024.

This update comes just days after Google announced major security changes to Chrome, as reported by my colleague Davey Winder . “To keep up with the increasing pace of hackers,” Google said, “we’re bringing real-time, privacy-preserving URL protection to Google Safe Browsing for anyone using Chrome on desktop or iOS.” This mirrors the safe browsing update for Android, that I reported previously.

Nowhere is Chrome more dominant than across the desktop market, which means Windows. In the last week this has made its own headlines , with Chrome users reporting irritating Microsoft pop-ups encouraging them to switch from Google to Bing as their default search engine. Some even commented that the pop-ups looked almost like malware, while many criticized the use of seeming Windows OS notifications as a marketing ploy.

Well now, on a more friendly note, according to Windows Report “Chrome security is to get beefed up as Windows Hello becomes the default authentication method—with this change, your password and payment information will be more secure.”

This feature isn’t new to Chrome, what’s changing is that it is going to be required by default. “The new dialog doesn’t offer any other verification options, so you’re forced to use Windows Hello. This is a welcome addition since it requires unauthorized users to know your PIN as well or to use biometric authentication.”

Huge security change revealed for Windows users

Google is clearly on a welcome mission to default to end-to-end encryption, hardened passwords and trusted device assurance, as well as multi-factor authentication. And while there will always be short-term irritation and inconvenience with such changes, the reality is that they should be embraced whole-heartedly. The parallel news of vulnerability fixes and hardened security is neither by accident nor unusual.

And so, once you’ve finished this article, you should quickly update your browser…

Transfer from PC to Mac with Migration Assistant

Migration Assistant transfers (copies) your contacts, calendars, email accounts, and more from your Windows PC to the appropriate places on your Mac.

Set up your Mac and PC

Use migration assistant to connect your computers, use migration assistant to transfer your information, what is transferred, and where, if the transfer isn't successful.
