The Virgin Atlantic World Elite Mastercard® often flies under the radar, as co-branded credit cards from foreign carriers tend to do. The card offers a decent welcome bonus and has a reliable set of perks that can be worth the $90 annual fee. Between a generous earning rate and annual bonuses, this card can offer hundreds of dollars in value.

Virgin Atlantic Credit Card Overview

Not only are the Virgin Atlantic World Elite Mastercard®'s benefits exceptional considering the low annual fee, but Virgin Atlantic's Flying Club program also makes award redemptions attainable. While the card's welcome bonus offer of 30,000 bonus Virgin Points after spending $1,000 or more on purchases in the first 90 days of account opening is one of the lowest credit card bonuses available right now, it's actually enough for at least one round-trip transatlantic flight.

The card and its corresponding program offer several surprising benefits that you might not know about. Here's our full review of the Virgin Atlantic World Elite Mastercard® and who it might be a good fit for.

Who should consider the Virgin Atlantic World Elite Mastercard?

The Virgin Atlantic World Elite Mastercard® is best for frequent travelers who want to supplement their rewards and accelerate their path towards elite status. The recurring benefits are also tailored towards those who fly with Virgin Atlantic, at least on occasion.

However, you don't have to be loyal to the airline to make this card worthwhile. If you're willing to familiarize yourself with the Flying Club program and how to maximize its award chart, this card can be valuable. The welcome bonus isn't as high as some other airline credit cards , but big spenders who don't want to deal with category bonuses might benefit from the 1.5x earning rate on all purchases.

Lastly, it's worth noting that Virgin Atlantic's Flying Club program is a transfer partner of Amex Membership Rewards , Chase Ultimate Rewards®, and Citi ThankYou . You can also transfer Capital One miles to Virgin Red, the loyalty program of Virgin brands (including Virgin Atlantic).

Those programs have credit cards that not only offer bigger welcome bonuses than this one but also allow you to transfer points to dozens of other programs. That way, if Flying Club ever gets devalued and awards require more points, you have other options.

The Virgin Atlantic World Elite Mastercard®'s welcome bonus offer is usually small compared to other airline credit cards, but it can still go a long way thanks to Flying Club's generous award chart. New cardholders can earn 30,000 bonus Virgin Points after spending $1,000 or more on purchases in the first 90 days of account opening. Plus, cardholders can earn up to 5,000 bonus points for adding two additional cardholders to the account.

The Virgin Atlantic World Elite Mastercard® doesn't offer much in the way of category bonuses. However, it makes up for it with an elevated earn rate on regular purchases. Cardholders earn 3 points per dollar spent directly on Virgin Atlantic purchases and 1.5 points per dollar on everything else. Considering other airline credit cards typically only earn 1 mile per dollar on non-bonus spending, this is pretty generous.

This card is a great choice for people who want to earn more than 1 mile per dollar spent on everyday purchases without having to track category bonuses. This elevated earn rate makes award flights more attainable, especially considering some of the cheap awards you can book through Virgin Atlantic Flying Club (more on that later).

The Virgin Atlantic World Elite Mastercard® will further reward your spending with up to 15,000 bonus points every anniversary. All you have to do is meet a certain spending threshold within your anniversary year to qualify for these bonuses:

  • 7,500 points after you spend $15,000 within your anniversary year
  • An additional 7,500 points after you spend a total of $25,000 within your anniversary year

Redeem points for flights

Virgin points are undervalued, considering the number of sweet spot awards you can book. Virgin Flying Club offers one of the cheapest ways to travel to Europe. An economy class ticket to London starts at just 10,000 points each way. That's less than what most frequent flyer programs charge for a domestic award ticket.

Keep in mind Virgin Atlantic adds significant fuel surcharges to some awards, so be sure to compare the cost of a flight including taxes and fees to other programs.

If you're looking for reasonable international business and first-class award tickets, Virgin Atlantic offers several sweet spots. You can fly Delta One business class to Europe for just 50,000 points each way.

If you're itching to get to Japan once it reopens to visitors, you can fly All Nippon Airways' aspirational first-class seat to Japan for just 110,000-120,000 points round-trip. This is an incredible bargain, considering Star Alliance partner United charges at least 70,000 points each way for the same award.

Virgin Atlantic is a great program if you want to redeem miles for international travel. It offers reasonable rates for both economy and premium seats. With the welcome bonus from the Virgin Atlantic World Elite Mastercard®, you can book at least one round-trip ticket to Europe.

Redeem points with upgrades and companion tickets

If you don't have enough points for a premium cabin award, you might want to book an economy fare and upgrade your seat with points. Rates vary greatly depending on your travel dates, departure city, destination, and the cabin you're booked into.

Upgrades to premium economy start at 16,000 points round-trip, while economy-to-Upper-Class upgrades start at 42,000 points. If you have many Virgin Atlantic points and dread a long-haul flight in economy class, redeeming points for an upgrade can be worthwhile. That's especially true if you booked a particularly cheap fare.

The ability to book a companion ticket for less is also a noteworthy feature of the Flying Club program. With as few as 9,000 points, you can book a companion ticket on select routes. This can be a good way to put the welcome bonus from the Virgin Atlantic World Elite Mastercard® to good use. Again, the exact number will vary by route and travel dates.

Redeem points for other travel experiences

If you don't quite have enough points for an award or seat upgrade, you can use them for spa treatments or chauffeur service to the airport. Spa treatments at Flying Club locations start at just 2,000 points for brow wax or 3,000 for a facial. You can choose from many more treatments and the rates will vary, but this is a nice way to unwind during your trip and put a small point balance to good use.

If you want to start your trip in style, you can splurge on a chauffeured ride to the airport for just 17,500 points. You must be traveling on an Upper Class ticket to qualify for this redemption and picked up within 75 miles of the airport.

Virgin Atlantic card benefits and features

Up to 15,000 bonus points every anniversary after qualifying purchases .

With a standard earning rate of 1.5 points per dollar spent, the Virgin Atlantic World Elite Mastercard® is already generous on the rewards front. However, the card offers an additional incentive when you complete a certain amount of spending every year. You can earn up to 15,000 bonus points for completing $25,000 in spending within your anniversary year:

These bonuses may not seem like much, but they can go a long way, thanks to Virgin Atlantic's generous award chart. Moreover, this bonus can help some cardholders justify keeping the card long-term and paying the annual fee.

Up to 5,000 bonus points when you add additional cardholders to your account

The Virgin Atlantic World Elite Mastercard® lets you give your Flying Club balance an easy boost by adding an authorized user. There's no additional fee and you'll earn 2,500 bonus points for adding an additional cardholder to your account. You can earn up to 5,000 bonus points this way.

While 5,000 points may not sound like much, it gets you halfway to a one-way economy class ticket between the East Coast and London. That's a terrific value for a simple action that takes just a few minutes.

Ability to earn elite status through spending

The Virgin Atlantic World Elite Mastercard® is one of the few airline cards that let you earn elite status via credit card spending. You can earn 25 Tier Points for every $2,500 made in purchases, up to 50 per month. That means you can earn Silver elite status through credit card spending alone and get more than halfway through earning top-tier Gold status via credit card spending.

Earning Silver status normally requires earning 400 Tier Points. However, the status requirements have been reduced between April 1, 2022, and March 31, 2023. Instead of completing 400 Tier Points for Silver status, you need just 300. Meanwhile, Gold status requirements have been reduced from 1,000 Tier Points to 800.

Once you achieve status with Virgin Atlantic, you have some practical benefits to look forward to.

Silver

  • 30% bonus points on flights
  • Premium check-in
  • Free seat assignments in Economy Light
  • 60% bonus points on flights
  • Upper Class check-in
  • Access to the Virgin Atlantic Clubhouses and London Heathrow Revival lounges
  • Extra luggage allowance

Annual Companion Reward

The Virgin Atlantic World Elite Mastercard®'s Companion Reward is a unique benefit. Cardholders who spend $25,000 annually can choose between a companion reward or a one-cabin upgrade. With the companion reward, you can bring a friend or family member on the same itinerary for just the cost of taxes and fees.

If you're a standard Flying Club Red Tier member, you can book the companion ticket on an Economy Classic or Premium ticket. Red members can also upgrade the companion ticket to Upper Class at a 50% point discount.

Flying Club Silver and Gold members can use the companion ticket in any cabin class. So if you were to book yourself an Upper Class ticket, you could book your companion's seat for just the cost of taxes and fees.

Solo travelers can forego the companion ticket in favor of a one-cabin upgrade. Virgin Atlantic gives you plenty of time to decide how to use the anniversary benefit. You have two years after the issue date to redeem it.

World Elite Mastercard perks

Because the Virgin Atlantic World Elite Mastercard® is a World Elite Mastercard , it comes with additional benefits, including:

  • Purchase assurance
  • Extended warranty
  • Travel assistance
  • Emergency roadside assistance
  • Travel accident insurance
  • World Elite Mastercard Concierge

The Virgin Atlantic World Elite Mastercard® has a $90 annual fee, which is slightly lower than the standard $95 fee on most other airline credit cards. The yearly fee is partially offset by recurring benefits like bonus points and companion rewards.

The card has no foreign transaction fees , meaning you can use it abroad to earn 1.5 points per dollar on all your purchases without any penalties.

Unfortunately, the card doesn't currently offer an introductory APR , so you'll want to pay your card in full every month to avoid interest fees.

Virgin atlantic credit card frequently asked questions (faq).

Most people who qualify for the Virgin Atlantic World Elite Mastercard® have a good or excellent credit score, which means at least a 670 FICO score or a minimum VantageScore of 700.

If you're not quite there yet, check out our guide to the top credit cards for fair credit for other options.

If you fly Virgin Atlantic or like redeeming points with the Flying Club program, the Virgin Atlantic World Elite Mastercard® could be a useful addition to your wallet. It's particularly valuable for big spenders who can unlock bonus points and the companion certificate by meeting spending thresholds.

That said, if your main objective is to earn Virgin Atlantic points from spending, you might want to look at credit cards that earn rewards in transferable points programs like Chase Ultimate Rewards or Amex Membership Rewards instead. Because you can transfer points to Virgin Atlantic at a 1:1 ratio from these programs, a card like the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card or American Express® Gold Card could be a better fit depending on your spending and travel habits.

Virgin Atlantic World Elite Mastercard Overview

For frequent flyers of Virgin Airlines who prefer rewards for future trips, the Virgin Atlantic World Elite Mastercard could be worth adding to your wallet. Earn 3X points on Virgin Atlantic purchases including flights, holiday packages, and in-flight extras plus 2.5X points on all other purchases. That makes the $90 annual fee is easy to recoup. Also, for those who don’t travel as much, this can act as a good flat-rate card for everyday buys.

That being said, this card is geared towards Virgin Atlantic customers only. While you can earn points on any eligible purchase, all rewards are only redeemable on Virgin Atlantic travel. For most this may be too narrow but for brand loyalists, this card can go a long way.

What are the advantages and disadvantages?

30,000 Flying Club bonus miles when you spend $1,000 or more within the first 90 days of account opening

No foreign transaction fees

Opportunity to earn a Premium upgrade or a companion ticket (after qualifying purchases)

Popular airline partners like Delta Air Lines, Air France and Air China

3% balance transfer fee ($10 minimum)

Blackout dates may apply

No introductory APR period (18.24% – 26.24% variable APR on purchases and balance transfers)

Current Welcome Offer

New cardholders can earn 30,000 bonus points when they spend $1,000 on purchases within the first 90 days of opening an account. This is halved from the previous 60,000-mile bonus after spending $2,000 within 90 days of owning the card. While the value is a clear downgrade, it is easier to obtain with cardholders only having to spend $334 per month versus $668.

According to the Points Guy valuation , Virgin Atlantic Flying Club points are worth 1.5 cents per dollar, which is an average rewards rate for travel cards. In total, this bonus is worth $450, much higher than the $90 annual fee.

Rewards Rate

With a rate of up to 3X points on every purchase, Virgin Atlantic Flying Club points accumulate quicker than you think. Redemption may be limited, as points can only be used on Virgin Atlantic travel options but can be applied on a variety of travel bookings such as flights, seat upgrades, and more. You can also use a combination of points and miles to cut costs. Keep in mind that blackout dates can apply depending on dates and locations.

How you earn

Built for Virgin Atlantic loyalists who travel often, the Virgin Atlantic World Elite Mastercard gives you multiple opportunities to earn bonus miles.

Virgin Atlantic offers three membership tiers (Red, Silver and Gold) through which you can gain benefits like premium check-in, lounge access and rewards flights. Every $2,500 you spend on net purchases with the Virgin Atlantic World Elite Mastercard, you’ll earn 25 Tier Points (a maximum of 50 Tier Points can be earned each month and 600 Tier Points each year).

Super-spenders can earn either a premium upgrade or same-class companion ticket after spending $25,000 annually. Other bonus mile-earning opportunities include 15,000+ Flying Club bonus miles each anniversary (after qualifying purchases) and up to 5,000 Flying Club bonus miles when you add an authorized user to your card. Miles don’t expire as long as your account is active once every three years.

If you value a solid list of transfer airline partners, the card boasts quite a few, including:

  • Delta Air Lines
  • KLM Royal Dutch Airlines
  • Hawaiian Airlines
  • All Nippon Airways
  • South African Airways
  • Virgin Australia
  • Singapore Airlines
  • Scandinavian Airlines
  • Air New Zealand

You can also earn and spend miles with Virgin Atlantic’s list of 13 hotel partners.

How to redeem

There’s no limit to the number of miles that you can earn, and miles can be redeemed for either Virgin Atlantic flights, partner flights or upgrades. Whether booking a Virgin Atlantic Holiday, getting a rental car, or reserving a room with one of the hotel partners, your Virgin points go far. Say you spend $1,500 each quarter on Virgin Atlantic purchases and an additional $200 a month on all other purchases. You’ll have earned 21,600 miles by the end of your first year. Based on your spending, you’ll qualify for the 30,000-mile welcome bonus (achieved after spending $1,000 within your first 90 days of account opening), for a total of 81,600 miles.

However, you can only spend points on travel bookings and extras, which can be a big drawback for those who prefer to spend points on purchases or redeem for statement credits.

How much are the Virgin Atlantic World Elite Mastercard rewards worth?

You earn 1.5 cents per dollar spent with your Virgin Atlantic World Elite Mastercard. As you can only redeem points through Virgin Atlantic offers, this point value stays consistent versus other cards that can vary depending on the redemption method like the Chase Sapphire Reserve. This rate is higher than some popular airline miles, such as Delta SkyMiles and United MileagePlus.

Other Cardholder perks

Because of its partnership with Mastercard, this card has more than enough perks to make it worth its yearly price tag. Not only does it come with protections such extended warranty protection as well as a few Bank of America benefits ($0 liability guarantee for fraudulent transactions, FICO® Score for free access and account alert reminders), but it also offers benefits for special events and shopping.

Travel protections

This card offers travel benefits like emergency roadside assistance, travel assistance, extended warranty and concierge services,

You can also expect purchase assurance, meaning stolen or damaged items purchased with the card may be eligible for up to $1,000 in protection within 90 days from the date of purchase, common carrier travel accident insurance and identity theft recovery assistance.

Concierge service

Every cardholder has access to Mastercard’s concierge service, which helps you get VIP access to top-tier restaurants, hotels, and hard-to-find tickets. You will also get exclusive access to special events and discounts. The service is available 24/7 so you can get assistance any time you need. You can contact them through the Mastercard Concierge app, using an online request form or by calling the number on the back of your card.

Shopping bonuses

The Virgin Atlantic makes shopping even more rewarding with Shop Away, an online shopping site that lets you earn bonus points, up to 12 points per dollar spent on popular brands. Earn points on clothing, toys, beauty products and more. This becomes even more valuable when combined with the complimentary ShopRunner membership, giving cardmembers free 2-day shipping and returns at over 140+ stores.

Rates and fees

There’s a $90 annual fee for the Virgin Atlantic World Elite card, a great price for frequent Virgin Atlantic flyers. This can easily be offset by taking a Virgin Airlines flight of $170 or more. You can also recoup it through $350 in other purchases.

While there are no foreign transaction fees, making it a great go-to card overseas, there are other fees to consider. Currently, there are no intro APR offers on purchases and balance transfers so the ongoing, variable 18.24 percent to 26.24 percent when you leave a balance on your card. For balance transfers and cash advances, a 3 percent or $10 fee, whichever is greater. There’s also a penalty. For late penalties, the APR is 29.99 percent and a late fee up to $40 is applied.

How does Virgin Atlantic World Elite Mastercard compare to other travel cards

The Virgin Atlantic World Elite credit card is a great addition for Virgin Atlantic loyalists, but what about the travelers who want more from their travel credit cards? For frequent travelers, a more general travel card or rewarding co-brand card may be a better fit.

Virgin Atlantic World Elite Mastercard vs. Bank of America Premium Rewards credit card

For those who want a general rewards card on par with the Virgin Atlantic card, the Bank of America® Premium Rewards® credit card is a good choice. Both cards have similar annual fees (the Bank of America Premium Rewards card being $95 per year). The welcome bonus of 60,000 bonus points (after spending $4,000 on purchases in the first 90 days) is worth more than the Virgin Atlantic card bonus but it costs more upfront to receive.

However, if you don’t have a brand preference when traveling, the perks of the Bank of America Premium will definitely go much farther. This card gives cardholders access to the Visa Signature Luxury Hotel collection, which comes with room upgrades, complimentary breakfast, and a $25 food and beverage credit. You can also receive up to $100 flight credit, cutting down costs on flights.

Virgin Atlantic World Elite Mastercard vs. Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant American Express

If you prefer a co-brand card, the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant ® American Express ® Card is very rewarding. While the annual fee is much higher at $650, the rewards rates are as well. You earn 6X points of eligible purchases when you stay at hotels participating in Marriott Bonvoy program as well as 3X points at restaurants worldwide and on flights booked directly with airlines and 2X points on all other eligible purchases. That’s twice as much as Virgin Atlantic rates and applies to more categories.

You also get airport perks that Virgin Atlantic World Elite card doesn’t like access to Priority Pass Select lounges and up to $100 for Global Entry or TSA PreCheck along with standard travel protections.

The biggest downside is the point value with Marriott Bonvoy points being only 0.84 cents per point versus Virgin Atlantic 1.5 cents. However, because of the varying categories and higher rates, it’s easier to earn more points with the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant card.

Best paired with Virgin Atlantic World Elite Mastercard

Because of its specificity, the Virgin Atlantic World Elite Mastercard isn’t the best travel card by itself. This card would pair well with a general travel card that has no annual fee such as the Capital One VentureOne credit card . Not only do you earn 5X points on hotels and rentals cards, but you have a solid rate on all other general purchases at 1.25X points.

It can also be a good idea to have another co-branded card for hotels if you have a brand you love to stay at. For example, the Hilton Honors American Express has great rates on Hilton hotel and resort bookings at 7X points per dollar and 3X points on general purchases. It also earns 5X points at supermarkets, gas stations and restaurants in the U.S., all without charging an annual fee. Either option gives you a no-cost way to earn points towards your next trip.

Earning Virgin Atlantic Reward+ Credit Card Flying Club Tier Rewards

1. If you spend £10,000 or more on card purchases over 12 months, you’ll earn a reward. You can only earn one reward every 12 months. The 12 months resets on each anniversary of the date your Virgin Atlantic Reward+ Credit Card account was opened.

2. Your choice depends on whether you’re a Red, Silver or Gold Flying Club member when you choose it. So if you’re a Red member when you earn your reward but a Silver member when you choose, you’ll get the Silver choices.

3. You can choose a reward from:

Companion Reward Ticket . Take one person with you in a reward seat:

If you’re a Silver or Gold member when you book the companion reward seat won’t cost any points.

If you’re a Red member when you book, the companion seat won’t cost any points in Economy Classic and Premium, or you’ll get a 50% reduction in the points needed for Upper.

Upgrade Voucher. Upgrade any booking by one cabin into a reward seat. Available to all tiers.

Clubhouse Pass (Silver and Gold Flying Club members only). For one person to use in any Clubhouse worldwide when flying with Virgin Atlantic, Delta or AFKL International. No additional guests can be permitted. If you’re a Gold member, you’ll get two passes.

5. If you want to spend a reward, visit https://flywith.virginatlantic.com/gb/en/contact-us.html to sort it out. There are some key things you need to know about certain types of reward first:

If you choose an Upgrade or Companion Reward Ticket, you can use it on a round trip, or upgrade two one-way flights. It’s subject to availability because they come from a limited number of seats in booking classes G, P and A only. You’ll still need to pay any taxes, fees and surcharges.

If you choose a Clubhouse Pass, it’ll be good for one entry to one Clubhouse. We'll email a digital Clubhouse Pass code to you which you will need to give to the Clubhouse on arrival. We won’t replace lost or stolen passes, or change the expiry date.

6. You can spend your reward for up to 24 months from the date it’s issued. That means you have to have booked your flights and taken the outbound flight within those 24 months. You can take the return journey afterwards.

Who are Virgin Atlantic's airline partners?

How to use virgin atlantic flying club points on partner airlines, virgin atlantic elite members get automatic skyteam status, earn virgin atlantic points with airline partners, virgin atlantic airline partners recapped.

Many American travelers are familiar with Virgin Atlantic because of its well-known founder, Richard Branson. But they may not know how strong the airline's points are when booking international travel.

When redeeming points through Virgin Atlantic partners, you can find tremendous value — and possibly lower prices — than if you booked directly using that airline's miles.

Learn who the Virgin Atlantic transfer partners are, how to use points to book flights and how your elite status can earn you benefits on other airlines.

Virgin Atlantic Flying Club partners with the SkyTeam alliance and has relationships directly with other airlines. Members can earn or redeem Virgin points for flights, hotel stays and more.

The airline joined the SkyTeam alliance in March 2023. As a SkyTeam member, you can earn and redeem points with any of the other 18 members of the alliance.

Flying Club Silver and Gold members also receive extra benefits when flying with SkyTeam partners, like priority check-in and boarding and an extra baggage allowance.

These airlines make up the SkyTeam alliance:

Aerolineas Argentinas.

AeroMexico.

Air Europa.

Air France.

China Airlines.

China Eastern.

Czech Airlines.

Delta Air Lines.

Garuda Indonesia.

ITA Airways.

Kenya AIrways.

Korean Air.

MEA (Middle East Airlines).

Vietnam Airlines.

Virgin Atlantic.

Xiamen Air.

The airline also has direct relationships with nine other airlines:

Air New Zealand.

All Nippon Airways (ANA).

Hawaiian Airlines.

Latam Airlines.

Scandinavian Airlines (SAS).

Singapore Airlines.

South African Airways.

Virgin Australia.

Flying Club Gold members get lounge access, priority check-in and extra baggage allowances when flying Air New Zealand, Singapore Airlines and Virgin Australia.

» Learn more: Best uses of Virgin Atlantic Flying Club points

The process is relatively simple to redeem points for flights on Virgin Atlantic Flying Club partners.

Log in to your Virgin Atlantic loyalty account . Go to VirginAtlantic.com to enter your username and password.

Search for flights . Select departure and arrival cities, round-trip or one-way flights, travel dates and number of passengers. Then select "points" or "points plus money" to use your points to pay for the trip.

Review flight options . In the search results, you'll receive flight options from Virgin Atlantic and any partner airlines that fly that route.

Choose your preferred flights . Select the flights with the price and itinerary you like best.

Pay for your flight . Finalize your flight by paying the taxes and fees with your preferred credit card. The points are then deducted from your Flying Club account.

Another option is the Virgin Atlantic reward seat checker , which searches for award space on direct flights from the United Kingdom. However, its search capabilities are limited to Virgin Atlantic and Delta, so you won't be able to find flights on other partner airlines.

This example shows award availability for August 2023 on Delta flights from Edinburgh to Boston:

As a member of the SkyTeam alliance, Virgin Atlantic elite members receive SkyTeam status benefits as well. Flying Club Silver members receive SkyTeam Elite status, while Gold members receive Elite Plus.

SkyTeam Elite status benefits include the following:

Additional checked bag.

Priority check-in.

Priority boarding.

Priority seating.

Priority airport standby.

Flying Club members with Elite Plus recognition also receive:

Airport lounge access.

Priority baggage handling.

When flying with one of Virgin Atlantic's partners, you can earn Flying Club points instead of miles from that airline.

This minimizes the number of orphan miles and points with random loyalty programs and accelerates your ability to redeem points for free flights.

Credit your flight to your Virgin Atlantic Flying Club account

You can credit your flight with one of the Virgin Atlantic Flying Club partners by adding your Flying Club number to your reservation online, over the phone or when checking in at the airport.

Most airlines allow you to modify your reservation online to choose a partner airline and provide your loyalty number.

Take advantage of bonus points in premium cabins

When booking premium cabins, you may be eligible to earn bonus points on your flights. For example, booking Air France Premiere class long-haul flights will earn you 400% Flying Club points and 200 tier points.

Be aware of varying earning rates from airline partners

Earning power varies by airline, so keep that in mind when choosing which partners to fly with. While you can earn up to 400% points and 200 tier points with Air France, AeroMexico caps out at 200% points and 75 tier points on long-haul flights.

These differences add up if you're flying with partners regularly.

Members earn Flying Club points from flights, but Virgin Atlantic has other options. Start online shopping at Virgin Atlantic Retail Therapy to earn points at participating retailers.

Plus, link your accounts to earn Flying Club points with partner hotels, rental car agencies and other travel partners.

Get points from transfer partners

In addition to partner airlines, Virgin Atlantic is a transfer partner of American Express, Bilt, Capital One, Chase and Citi.

These partners transfer points at a 1:1 ratio with a minimum of 1,000 points at a time. Marriott Bonvoy points also transfer but at a less desirable 3:1 ratio. However, you get a 5,000 bonus for every 60,000 Bonvoy points you transfer. Terms apply.

How to get Virgin Atlantic elite status without stepping on a plane

Update: Some offers mentioned below are no longer available. View the current offers here .

Virgin Atlantic's elite status program has become more powerful over the past few years. Delta Air Lines recently made a large investment in the airline and started offering reciprocal elite status benefits. This means that Virgin Atlantic elite members enjoy benefits when flying on Delta Airlines and vice-versa. In my eyes, this makes Virgin Atlantic elite status significantly more useful for American travelers — especially for those who frequently travel to the U.K.

To sweeten the deal even further, you can earn Virgin Atlantic status relatively easily in the U.S. The airline's U.S. cobranded credit card lets you earn Tier Points quickly, giving you an easy way to fast-track to elite status even when you're not flying. Plus, most Delta flights — both international and domestic — earn Tier Points and redeemable Flying Club miles .

Virgin Atlantic elite status benefits

virgin atlantic travel card

There are two tiers of Virgin Atlantic elite status: Silver and Gold. Each of these tiers have various benefits that can make travel less stressful and more streamlined for frequent flyers. Here's a quick overview of all benefits included with both status tiers — we've broken each tier down by Virgin Atlantic and partner airline benefits.

Virgin Atlantic Silver status benefits

Virgin Atlantic Silver is the airline's lower status tier. It includes a baseline of benefits that make the airport experience easier. That said, it has limited onboard enhancements — here's a look:

  • 30% bonus mileage earning: Earn 30% more miles when flying with Virgin Atlantic.
  • Premium check-in: Use the Premium check-in counter regardless of your class of service.
  • Priority boarding: Board with other elite status members ahead of other travelers.
  • Free seat assignment: Select your seat for free in all classes of travel, including Economy Light.
  • Priority baggage: Your bags will be among the first off of the plane when you land.
  • 7% discount with Virgin Holidays: Receive a 7% discount on all vacation packages booked with Virgin Holidays.
  • Bonus miles: Earn 2,000 bonus miles when you requalify for status.

Virgin Atlantic Gold status benefits

Virgin Atlantic Gold status is far more powerful than Silver. It has a suite of interesting perks that make travel truly luxurious — for example, access to an arrivals lounge at London-Heathrow (LHR) . Gold members are entitled to all Silver benefits and the following on Virgin Atlantic flights:

  • Delta SkyClub access: access Delta Sky Club lounges when your itinerary includes a transatlantic sector to or from the U.K.
  • Delta Comfort+ upgrades: Complimentary space-available access to DL Comfort+ at the gate prior to departure for all regions of travel, excluding Basic Economy fares.

Benefits on Singapore Airlines

Virgin Atlantic and Singapore Airlines are long-time partners. Gold members can enjoy the following benefits when flying with Singapore's largest airline:

  • Additional baggage: One additional piece of checked luggage up to 20kg on all flights.
  • Singapore Airlines' SilverKris lounge access: Access SilverKris lounges in Adelaide, Bangkok, Brisbane, Delhi, Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpar, London Heathrow, Manila, Melbourne, Perth, San Francisco, Sydney and Taipei when flying Singapore Airlines. Likewise, access SilverKris lounges in Singapore (SIN) terminal 1 and 2 when flying business class and KrisFlyer Gold lounges in terminals 2 and 3 when flying economy.

Benefits on Virgin Australia

Finally, Gold tier members have access to a handful of Virgin Australia benefits. Here's what to expect:

  • Virgin Australia lounge access: Access lounges in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Canberra, Alice Springs, Cairns, Darwin, Gold Coast, Mackay, Perth and Wellington when flying with Virgin Australia. You must bring your physical loyalty card for access.

How to qualify for Virgin Atlantic elite status

You qualify for Virgin Atlantic elite status by earning "Tier Points" by flying and through credit card spend. You'll qualify for Silver and Gold status by earning 400 and 1,000 Tier Points respectively. These must be earned within a single Upgrade Cycle. This is calculated from the current date of the month, to the first day of the same month in the previous year.

You can maintain your status by earning the same number of Tier Points before the end of the next Upgrade Cycle. If you're a Gold member and only earn 500 Tier Points, however, you'll drop to Silver status for the following status year.

Should Americans earn Virgin Atlantic status?

Photo by Orli Friedman/The Points Guy

Virgin Atlantic is a U.K.- based airline, so Americans won't get as much use from the benefits as their British counterparts. That said, the benefits on Delta are solid, especially at the Gold level. This tier offers similar benefits to Delta Medallion Silver status on the airline, and is even better for those hoping to access lounges when en route to the U.K.

The standout benefits to me are lounge access and exit row seating on Virgin Atlantic flights. Virgin Atlantic's Clubhouse lounges are some of the best in the world, offering excellent food options and a posh atmosphere. Likewise, travelers that spend a lot of time in Virgin Atlantic economy will undoubtedly appreciate extra legroom.

So, should Americans earn Virgin Atlantic elite status? It all depends on your travel habits. If you frequent the U.K. on Delta and Virgin Atlantic flights, I think it's worth it. You'll have a better experience on these flights and enjoy an elevated travel experience on domestic Delta flights. On the other hand, travelers that rarely visit the U.K. are better off earning Delta elite status for more applicable benefits.

How to earn Virgin Atlantic elite status quickly

Below, I'll walk you through all of the ways you can earn Tier Points. Then, I'll round-out the section with a discussion on how to earn Virgin Atlantic as quickly as possible.

Earning Tier Points when flying with Virgin Atlantic

As you'd expect, you can earn Tier Points when flying on Virgin Atlantic. The number of Tier Points you'll earn on a flight depends on your fare class. Each fare class earns the same number of Tier Points regardless of the route, so a flight from New York-JFK to London (LHR) would earn the same number of Tier Points as a flight from London to Hong Kong (HKG) in the same fare class.

Here's a look at how many Tier Points each Virgin Atlantic fare class earns.

Virgin Atlantic Tier Point Earning Chart

As you'd expect, the higher the fare class the more Tier Points you earn. Discounted Upper Class tickets — defined as those in the G and Z fare class — earn 100 Tier Points per one-way flight. This means you can earn Silver status by taking just two round-trip ticket — an easy feat for those traveling to the U.K. frequently for work.

Earning Tier Points when flying with airline partners

Likewise, you can earn Tier Points when you fly with Virgin Atlantic's various airline partners, but it isn't quite as straightforward. You'll earn Tier Points based on the length of your flight and fare class. In the case of Delta Air Lines, you'll earn more Tier Points on flights over 3,000 miles. You can view the exact number of Tier Points you'll earn with your airline partner on its respective Virgin Atlantic partner page .

Here's a look at the Delta Air Lines earning chart. You can see that the number of points you'll earn varies widely from 5 Tier Points to 200 Tier Points per one-way ticket. Flights over 3,000 miles earn significantly more points than shorter flights, with Delta One earning up to 200 Tier Points depending on the booking class.

Air France's Tier Point earning chart is a bit more complicated, but still pretty straightforward. In this case, flights over 600 miles earn more Tier Points than shorter flights. You'll also notice that the redeemable point earning is listed on this chart too.

Air France Tier Point Earning Virgin Atlantic

Not all airline partners are as generous as Delta and Air France. For example, Virgin Atlantic and Hawaiian Airlines are partners, but it only awards a maximum of 50 Tier Points per flight. Short-haul economy flights aren't eligible for Tier Point earning either, which is disappointing for those planning to island hop in Hawaii.

Earning Tier Points with a U.S. cobranded credit card

virgin atlantic travel card

For most, the easiest way to earn Tier Points is by spending on the Virgin Atlantic World Elite Mastercard®. This Bank of America-issued credit card earns redeemable Flying Club miles on all purchases and awards Tier Points when you hit certain spend thresholds.

You will earn 25 tier points per $2,500 in purchases with a maximum of 50 per month. Depending on how you spend, this can be a quick 50 Tier Points every month. Max this out every month, and you'll earn 600 Tier Points. This immediately qualifies you for Gold status without ever stepping foot on an airplane.

The card has other solid benefits too. It earns 3x miles per dollar spent on Virgin Atlantic purchases and 1.5x miles per dollar spent elsewhere, equal to a 3.2% return on spending . This makes the card a solid option for everyday (see: un-bonused) spending if you're also seeking Tier Points. You'll also earn a companion pass when you spend at least $25,000 in a single calendar year.

The card currently offers 50,000 bonus miles when you spend $1,000 or more in your first 90 days from opening the account. The card has a modest $90 annual fee , which can be largely offset by Tier Point earning and the annual companion pass.

If you want to get Virgin Atlantic elite status as fast as possible, you'll want to start by applying for a Virgin Atlantic World Elite Mastercard and using it for all of your unbonused spending. Think rent payments , deli runs and dry cleaning — you'll want to use a card that earns bonus points for dining at restaurants, grocery and travel purchases . The American Express® Gold Card and Chase Sapphire Preferred Card are good options for those purchase categories (limited to U.S. supermarkets for the Amex Gold).

As discussed in the last section, you can earn 600 Tier Points per year with this card if you spend $5,000 on it per month. This is unrealistic for most, but may be possible for those with high rent, college tuition payments or lots of reimbursable expenses. It will take you six months to earn Silver status this way and a full year to earn Gold status.

If you're based in the U.S., you may want to pad your balance by crediting domestic Delta flights to Virgin Atlantic. If you need to travel, you can find low-cost first class tickets on many Delta routes. For example, this flight from Rochester (ROC) to New York-JFK is $107.10 — just $29 more than a Main Cabin economy ticket.

ROC to JFK Delta Pricing

This flight is booked in the Z fare class and is well under 3,000 miles. You'd earn 20 Tier Points on this ticket which is three times more than the V fare economy ticket. Booking these flights often can quickly accelerate your Tier Point earning, especially when mixed with earning on long-haul flights and cobrand credit card spend.

Bottom line

All in all, Virgin Atlantic elite status can be very easy for Americans to earn. Through a mix of credit card spending and flying, you can earn top-tier Gold status in a matter of months. This status is useful for those who frequently travel to the U.K. and use Delta as their domestic carrier of choice in the U.S. That said, you may want to skip this elite status opportunity if you rarely fly Virgin Atlantic and focus on earning Delta elite status instead.

The 5 best travel credit cards for 2024 — including the new fine print.

Two signs for TSA Pre-check and general security point in opposite directions in a Delta terminal.

Sorting through the cards in your wallet should be an annual chore. You want to double down on the most rewarding perks — which can change from year to year — while omitting other cards that have drifted into mediocrity. It’s a tedious process that can significantly boost your points and miles balances and pave the way for free and upgraded travel.

Let us do the heavy lifting for you. Changes to major credit cards offerings that happen in the yearend cycle are now inked in place, and we’ve been busy sifting the fine print so you don’t have to.

There are a few caveats: Sign-up bonuses come and go, and it is always wise to scour the internet for the best offer. Don’t assume that you need to go with the most prominent, highest-fee cards for hefty rewards. These days, some options with lower annual fees pack a solid punch, too.

Here are the best travel credit cards on the market right now, plus more affordable alternatives well worth considering.

Best overall

The Platinum Card from American Express

Annual fee: $695

The quick sell: Even with patchy acceptance of Amex cards abroad, the Platinum card continues to reign supreme for its excellent airport lounge access and instant VIP status at hotels. You can milk its pricey fee for some $1,800 in value before you redeem a single point.

New fine print for 2024: Effective February 2025, cardholders can access Delta Sky Clubs only 10 times a year; previously, there were no such limits. Meanwhile, a new partnership offers cardholders free access to Points.me, a clever tool that makes it easy to compare points-redemption options across a wide variety of airline and hotel programs.

The perks: Access to 40+ Centurion airport lounges is always a draw, though now you’ll have to pay $50 to bring a guest unless you spend more than $75,000 on your card annually. Cardholders also benefit from partnerships with other lounge networks, including Priority Pass (which offers no-cost access to its 1,300+ locations), Plaza Premium, Escape, Lufthansa and Delta Sky Club (when flying Delta). For now, Sky Club use is unlimited; in 2025, it will be restricted to 10 visits per year.

The card comes with a slew of valuable credits. These include $200 for such incidental airline fees as seat assignments and bag surcharges, $200 toward hotel reservations made via Fine Hotels + Resorts program, and monthly credits for Uber and media subscriptions (including Disney+, SiriusXM and the New York Times). You can also score a $155 Walmart+ credit and $100 for Saks Fifth Avenue — not to mention instant gold status with both Marriott Bonvoy and Hilton Honors loyalty programs.

Points (1 point equals 1 cent) can be redeemed like cash via the Membership Rewards portal or transferred to such airline and hotel loyalty programs as Air France/KLM, Delta and Virgin Atlantic. You get five times the points when booking travel via American Express or its Fine Hotels + Resorts program, which confers free breakfasts, room upgrades and late checkout at such hotels as the Hotel Plaza Athénée Paris or the Four Seasons Bali at Jimbaran Bay.

Cheaper alternatives: The Blue Business Plus Card from American Express offers unrivaled points-earning potential among no-annual-fee cards — two points per dollar. If you value airport lounge access, the $395-annual fee Capital One Venture X card is a better deal that offers similar earnings, plus access to Priority Pass, Plaza Premium and a growing number of Capital One lounges.

Best return on points

Chase Sapphire Reserve

Annual Fee: $550

The quick sell: This card provides the most value when it comes to redeeming points for free travel. Its built-in credits are great, too.

New fine print for 2024: Here, it’s business as usual.

The perks: Chase Ultimate Rewards points can be redeemed like cash or transferred to airline and hotel partners. You’ll get 10 of those per dollar spent on hotels, rental cars and dining booked through Chase, and 5 points per dollar on flights. You also get 10 points per dollar on Lyft rides and 3 points per dollar on other travel and dining purchases made outside Chase’s ecosystem. All other purchases earn 1 point per $1.

These points come with mega value: One point is akin to 1.5 cents, making a $1,400 flight in premium economy from New York to Paris and back roughly 90,000 points.

As with Amex, you can quickly earn back the annual fee. A $300 annual credit wipes away travel charges, and you get $100 toward TSA PreCheck or Global Entry applications, plus free Priority Pass membership. Book via Chase’s own Luxury Hotel & Resort Collection program, and you’ll get perks like free breakfast and room upgrades, too. Then come such smaller benefits as a $5 monthly credit to DoorDash (plus free DashPass membership) and the free bike rentals, discounts and priority pickups that come with Lyft Pink All Access membership.

Cheaper alternative: The Chase Sapphire Preferred offers excellent points earning and solid redemption values — 1 point for 1.25 cents — but nixes Priority Pass and some other perks in exchange for a lower $95 annual fee.

Best for Star Alliance travelers

United Club Infinite Card

Annual Fee: $525

The quick sell: Why pay the $650 annual fee to join the United Club as a member when you can get access—for $125 via this card — along with greater access to United MileagePlus award-redemption availability just for holding the card?

New fine print for 2024: You can now earn 10,000 status-qualifying points by swiping this card — up from 8,000 last year. That’s enough to earn Premier Gold status all on its own.

The perks: United’s miles may have lost value over the years, particularly since the airline ditched award charts and raised prices on partners, but it’s the most transparent of the three biggest US carriers. (For one thing, it still shows award availability for most partners on its website and app.) With this card, MileagePlus earnings pile up fast, thanks to 4 miles per dollar on United purchases, 2 miles on dining and other travel and 1 mile on everything else. The path to elite status—measured via Premier Qualifying Points or PQPs — accelerates, thanks to 25 PQPs awarded per $500 spent (up to 10,000 PQPs a year), making most loyalty tiers (including Platinum) relatively attainable, even for non-business travelers.

This is not just about earning potential. You’ll get upgraded on eligible domestic and Caribbean award tickets just for holding the card, and if you redeem miles for a saver economy ticket, you’ll get 10% off in rebate form. Hotel benefits come via a partnership with IHG Hotels & Resorts: Cardholders get a $75 credit to apply toward on-site expenses whenever they stay at these properties, plus automatic Platinum Elite status with IHG One Rewards. (The latter gets guaranteed late checkouts, bonus points and free room upgrades.) When it comes to lounges, unlimited access is included, not just to United Clubs but to those of many Star Alliance partners as well.

Other benefits include a TSA PreCheck or Global Entry credit, two complimentary checked bags per flight, 25% discounts on in-flight purchases and standard travel insurance.

Cheaper alternative: The $95 annual fee for the United Explorer Card nets many of the most important perks, such as upgrades on United award tickets; two miles per dollar spent on United flights, dining and hotels; and two United Club passes.

Best for Delta loyalists

Delta SkyMiles Reserve Credit Card

Annual Fee: $650

The quick sell: SkyMiles has seen Zimbabwe-like currency devaluation entailing inflated redemption prices and scant partner availability. That makes this card — which isn’t a great option by most conventional measures — especially valuable to Delta loyalists. It offers an unparalleled three miles per dollar on Delta purchases (or one mile for every other purchase), and holding it bumps you up the upgrade list if you also have Medallion status.

New fine print for 2024: Pay attention to that annual fee; it costs $100 more than it did last year. But new travel credits offset that price hike, and your annual companion certificate can now be used on international flights to Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean.

The perks: In a bid to convert users toward booking hotels on Delta Stays, its own nascent platform, the airline is extending a $200 annual accommodations credit to cardholders. That’s in addition to $20 monthly Resy credits, $10 monthly ride-sharing credits and top Hertz elite status. But lounge access will soon be cut back. Starting on Feb. 1, 2025, cardholders will be limited to 15 day passes per year, rather than four free passes per trip on an otherwise unlimited basis. Additional visits will cost $50 unless you spend $75,000 per calendar year to unlock unlimited access.

virgin atlantic travel card

Also noteworthy, a free status-qualifying “boost” for cardholders nets you $2,500 Medallion Qualifying Dollars (MQD) at the beginning of the year — getting you halfway to silver under the airline’s new qualification scheme. (You’ll also get 1 MQD for each $10 spent on the card; you’d earn Diamond status with some $280,000 in annual spending at that rate.)

That’s not to mention the more standard travel benefits: free checked bags, a 20% discount on in-flight purchases, a 15% mileage discount on award flights, priority boarding, travel insurance coverage and a credit for either Global Entry or TSA PreCheck.

Cheaper alternative: If lounge access is not important, the Delta SkyMiles Platinum Card offers a happy medium with a lower $350 fee yet fewer benefits. These include a $150 Delta Stays credit, $10 per month for both Resy and ride-sharing services, mid-tier Hertz status, and the same expanded companion certificate perks. In addition to the $2,500 MQD bonus each year, the card earns 1 MQD per $20 spent, plus further basic travel benefits.

Best for American Airlines flyers

Citi/AAdvantage Executive World Elite Mastercard

Annual fee: $595

The quick sell: While American now lets you buy status with credit card spending on everyday purchases with any of its co-branded credit cards, only this one adds complimentary Admirals Club lounge membership. This ordinarily costs $850 — more than this card’s annual fee.

New fine print for 2024: The accrual period for AAdvantage points now stretches from March through February rather than from January through December.

The perks: Airport lounge access is where you extract value from this card; you’ll maximize it by adding up to three authorized users to your account. Setting this up comes with a $175 fee, but it extends your Admirals Club access to those users — and gives them the ability to bring two guests into the lounge as well. It’s great for family members you trust and travel with; lounge membership for four individuals could otherwise cost $3,400.

virgin atlantic travel card

Moreover, handy credits include $10 per month to use with Lyft and Grubhub, $120 toward Avis or Budget car rentals annually, and 20,000 bonus points when you spend some $90,000 on eligible purchases.

Cheaper alternative: While the unique ability to exchange points for AAdvantage miles with the no-annual-fee Bilt Mastercard will end on June 30, 2024, a new partnership with Alaska Mileage Plan makes this option appealing to Oneworld flyers at large.

Bilt has quickly shaken up the industry by offering one point on everything, including rent and mortgage payments (typically not payable with other credit cards). This can help college-age consumers and young adults build credit while earning points.

Monthly promotions can help you earn and spend those points more efficiently, and the card has points-transfer partnerships with more than a dozen loyalty programs, including World of Hyatt and Air France-KLM Flying Blue.

How Chase Ultimate Rewards points and an airline alliance made my holiday vacation possible

Fortune Recommends™ has partnered with CardRatings for our coverage of credit card products. Fortune Recommends™ and CardRatings may receive a commission from card issuers.

I swore by the simplicity of cash-back credit cards for years. Airline miles? Flexible points you transfer to partners? That all seemed complicated—and don’t even get me started on the annual fees many travel cards charge. Suffice it to say, I never expected to be transferring Chase Ultimate Rewards to Virgin Atlantic then using Virgin points to book flights on Delta Air Lines, but that’s what you do when your wife wants to visit New York City during the holiday season.

Here’s what I learned about leveraging airline alliances to book nearly free holiday travel.

How I compared award ticket availability with various airlines

This may come as a surprise, but most of my award ticket research was not done through Chase, even though I knew I wanted to redeem Chase points. Instead, I started my search by plugging the desired travel dates into the mobile app of a competitor, the Bilt Mastercard.

That’s because the Bilt app provides access to point.me, a tool you’d normally have to pay for to be able to search award availability with multiple loyalty programs in one place. And, since Bilt and Chase have significant overlap in the airline partners they offer, I was able to plug my desired dates into the Bilt app and see what redemptions were available with Chase partners such as British Airways (on American Airlines flights) and Virgin Atlantic (on Delta).

My flights from Charlotte to New York on Delta Air Lines

There aren’t many credit card rewards currencies that transfer to Delta. Typically, if you want to earn Delta SkyMiles with a credit card, you’ll either need one of the Delta co-branded cards issued by American Express or an Amex card that earns American Express Membership Rewards points, since Membership Rewards points transfer at a 1:1 rate to Delta.

But, you know where you can transfer Chase Ultimate Rewards points? To the British airline Virgin Atlantic. And, because Virgin and Delta are both part of the SkyTeam alliance, you can search redemption options for Virgin miles—through your Flying Club/Virgin Red loyalty account on Virgin’s website—and look for partner space on flights operated by Delta.

I requested the points transfer online via my Chase account and it processed almost instantly.

All told, we spent 34,000 points and $22.40 for two adults traveling from Charlotte to New York and back. We traveled light, sticking to just a carry-on and backpack per person, in order to avoid pesky baggage fees.

Why the Chase Sapphire Preferred is worth the annual fee

Three words explain why I’ll pay the $95 annual fee for the Chase Sapphire Preferred ® Card this year, even though I’m usually very fee-averse in choosing my credit cards: monster welcome bonus.

The Sapphire Preferred’s bonus at the time of this writing is 60,000 points after spending $4,000 in purchases in the first three months. When I applied, it was elevated to 80,000 points thanks to a limited-time offer. (Sadly, I missed out on an even more eye-popping offer of 100,000 points back in 2021, but there’s no sense crying over spilled points.)

To put that in context, you can redeem Ultimate Rewards points at 1 cent each for cash back. But if you have a Sapphire Preferred, you can redeem them for 25% more value to book on Chase Travel℠  or transfer them at a 1:1 rate to more than a dozen airline and hotel partners.

That means 80,000 points, like I socked away from the welcome bonus, are worth at least $1,000 in travel through the portal. If you’re willing to put a little extra work into searching for award flights or stays with Chase’s transfer partners, that number could be even higher.

After my first year comes around, I might call the issuer and ask to downgrade my Sapphire Preferred to a no-annual-fee Chase Freedom Unlimited ® card. While the $50 annual credit for hotels booked in the Chase portal is a nice feature, I don’t know that I’ll use the card enough to justify the $95 cost on a regular basis. But for a $1,000+ value during year one? That’s a trade I’m willing to make.

Examples of airline alliances you can take advantage of

There are three major airline alliances you should know about if you’re interested in using credit card rewards for award travel . We’ve mentioned SkyTeam, and the other two are Oneworld and Star Alliance. Here are some examples of how you could leverage these alliances:

  • Book a Delta flight with Virgin points (perhaps transferred from a card that earns Chase Ultimate Rewards or one that earns Capital One Miles) thanks to the SkyTeam alliance.
  • Fly to a European destination on KLM using Delta SkyMiles, also thanks to SkyTeam.
  • Book a flight on American Airlines using Avios, the currency of the British Airways Executive Club loyalty program, since both airlines are part of Oneworld.
  • Fly on United Airlines with Air Canada Aeroplan miles thanks to the Star Alliance.
  • Book to a European destination on Lufthansa with United miles (Star Alliance).

Be aware that you’ll want to search through the website of the airline program you’re redeeming miles with. To refer back to my own trip as an example, I booked through Virgin Atlantic’s site, not through the Delta Air Lines site, even though I ended up on a Delta-operated flight.

Also, know that this process isn’t without potential complications. Some airlines are known for providing partners with limited space, so you’re gambling on being able to find what you need. With that in mind, be sure to find your flights on the website you will be using before transferring your points.

The takeaway

My visit to the Big Apple might not have been as eventful as Kevin McCallister’s infamous trip to the same city, but it was an adventure in its own right. I got to browse the Harry Potter New York store and marvel at the Hippogriff statue, chow down on a mouthwatering pastrami on rye from Katz’s Deli, and glimpse the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree. None of this would have happened if I hadn’t taken the time to learn a little something about how airline partnerships work.

I won’t claim to be a true expert in the world of travel hacking just yet—but I like to think this experience proves that, with a small investment of time and research, your credit card rewards can help you land (pun intended) flights you might not have realized at first were even an option.

Ruby Rebel: Virgin Atlantic Kicks off 40th Birthday Celebrations Naming New Aircraft After Sir Richard Branson

  • Ruby Rebel is the airline’s newest Airbus A330neo named in honour of Sir Richard Branson.
  • Aircraft will feature brand new flying icon with registration G-VSRB.
  • Virgin Atlantic celebrates its 40 th birthday on 22 nd June 2024.

In the year that Virgin Atlantic turns 40, the airline will pay homage to its founder, Sir Richard Branson, by naming its latest state of the art aircraft in his honour.  Ruby Rebel, registration G-VSRB, will salute Sir Richard and mark 40 years of Virgin Atlantic shaking up the travel industry.

The airline’s fifth Airbus A330neo, which will enter service from May, will also feature a brand-new flying icon, inspired by Sir Richard and the rebellious spirit that’s always driven Virgin Atlantic to do things differently.

The icon, whose features are inspired by Holly Branson, include nods to Sir Richard’s career and famed business ventures throughout its design, such as Virgin Records pin badges, a Tubular Bells charm bracelet, a Virgin Galactic rocket on the belt’s buckle and a Virgin Voyages anchor on icons boot.  Another bracelet featuring the letters J, S, and H have been designed as a sweet gesture to his wife Joan and children Holly and Sam. The icon’s punk styling reflects the airline’s iconic Vivienne Westwood uniform, which is still rocked by its cabin crew today.

Ruby Rebel symbolises Virgin Atlantic’s desire to do things differently, beginning in June 1984, when its first aircraft, Maiden Voyager, departed London for New York, bringing a flash of red to the skies.  The airline’s focus has always been to deliver the best customer experience in a brilliantly different way. From being the first airline to introduce seat back TVs, the Premium cabin and fleet wide Wi-Fi, to flying the first world’s first Pride flight and the first 100% SAF transatlantic flight, Virgin Atlantic and its people continue to challenge the status quo.

Shai Weiss, CEO Virgin Atlantic, commented;

“Forty years ago, Virgin Atlantic flew our first customers between London and New York offering something different and realising our purpose to ensure everyone can take on the world. As we gear up to mark our Ruby anniversary in June, it’s an opportunity to look ahead to the next forty years.

“So much has changed, but the one thing that’s remained constant is our incredible people and their unique red spirit, the red thread that keeps us flying miles above the rest. It all started with Richard on 22 June 1984, a pioneer with a vision to shake up the travel industry, putting people first and giving customers a choice.

“Ruby Rebel embodies the rebellious spirit that’s always driven us to do things differently. And, the best is yet to come.”

Sir Richard Branson, Virgin Atlantic Founder and President, commented;

“When starting Virgin Atlantic, I went against everyone’s advice – and on paper they were right.  They knew we’d be a tiny airline against much bigger players.  But my attitude is that if you can create something that's better than what everybody else is offering, then you have a chance of succeeding.

“Virgin Atlantic was created to provide a bright red, fun, friendly, fabulous choice that made flying better for everyone. We worked out in 1984 all the things we could do differently, from our planes, our Clubhouses, our in-flight experience and most importantly our people.  Now, 40 years later that rebellious spirit lives on and will continue to drive us forward as we shake up the aviation industry for the next 40 years and beyond.”

About Virgin Atlantic

Virgin Atlantic was founded by entrepreneur Sir Richard Branson in 1984, with innovation and amazing customer service at its core. In 2023, Virgin Atlantic was voted Britain’s only Global Five Star Airline by APEX for the seventh year running in the Official Airline Ratings. Headquartered in London, it employs more than 8,500 people worldwide, flying customers to 30 destinations across four continents throughout the year.

Alongside shareholder and Joint Venture partner Delta Air Lines, Virgin Atlantic operates a leading transatlantic network, with onward connections to over 200 cities around the world. In February 2020, Air France-KLM, Delta Air Lines and Virgin Atlantic launched an expanded Joint Venture, offering a comprehensive route network, convenient flight schedules, competitive fares and reciprocal frequent flyer benefits, including the ability to earn and redeem miles across all carriers.  Virgin Atlantic joined SkyTeam in March 2023 as the global airline alliance’s first and only UK member airline, enhancing the alliance’s transatlantic network and services to and from Heathrow and Manchester Airport.

Virgin Atlantic has been pioneering sustainability leadership for more than 15 years, committing to Net Zero by 2050 and continuous action that reduces environmental impact.  The airline operates one of the youngest and most fuel-efficient fleets in the skies, with an average age under seven years. In October 2022, Virgin Atlantic welcomed the first of 16 A330-900neos to the fleet, continuing its transformation towards 100% next generation aircraft by 2028.  In November 2023, the airline led a consortium to deliver the world’s first flight across the Atlantic on 100% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), demonstrating that 100% SAF can be used safely as a drop in fuel in existing infrastructure, engines and airframes. The need to scale production is an industry imperative and Virgin Atlantic is committed to radical collaboration across the energy chain to support commercialisation ahead of 2030.

The Wells Fargo Autograph Journey℠ Visa® Card is a new travel credit card that has what it takes to compete with the top cards in this class. It has a generous welcome offer, earns rewards points at a high rate and, starting on April 4, 2024, the card will allow you to transfer rewards points to partner travel loyalty programs.

If you're looking for your next travel card, CNBC Select has the details you need to know to decide if the Autograph Journey card is right for you.

Wells Fargo Autograph Journey℠ Card review

Benefits and perks.

Rates and fees

Card comparison, is the wells fargo autograph journey℠ card right for you, bottom line.

New Wells Fargo Autograph Journey Visa Card members can earn 60,000 rewards points after spending $4,000 on purchases with the card in the first three months of account opening. You can currently redeem Wells Fargo rewards points for one cent per point (though they'll likely be worth more when you can transfer them to travel loyalty programs) which means the bonus is worth at least $600.

The Wells Fargo Autograph Journey Visa Card has a $50 annual airline credit, which you'll earn when you make an eligible purchase of at least $50. This easy-to-use benefit applies to anything from airfare to baggage fees. If you take the airline credit at face value, it makes the card's effective annual fee $45 (down from $95).

Cardholders will also appreciate this card's travel protections, which include:

  • Travel and emergency assistance
  • Rental car coverage (secondary in U.S.)
  • Lost baggage reimbursement
  • Roadside Dispatch
  • Trip cancellation and interruption protection
  • Travel accident insurance
  • Cell phone protection

As a Visa Signature® card , you can use Visa Signature Concierge and book stays with the Visa Signature Luxury Hotel Collection. The concierge services can help you get travel, entertainment and dinner reservations. And when you reserve a stay through the Visa Signature Luxury Hotel Collection, you'll receive benefits such as free breakfast for two, room upgrades (when available) and a $25 food and beverage credit.

How to earn and redeem rewards

The Wells Fargo Autograph Journey Visa Card is one of the most rewarding cards for booking hotels and flights. A nice convenience with this card is that you don't need to book through a specific site or travel portal to earn the following high rates on your purchases:

  • 5X points on hotels
  • 4X points on airlines
  • 3X points on all other travel
  • 3X points on restaurants
  • 1X points on all other purchases

You can redeem Wells Fargo Rewards in many ways, including gift cards , travel (booked through Wells Fargo), statement credit and ATM withdrawals. All of these redemptions provide a value of one cent per rewards point, so 10,000 points are worth $100.

Once travel partner transfers go live on April 4, 2024, you'll have an opportunity to dramatically boost the value and versatility of your Wells Fargo Rewards. The initial lineup of partners is:

  • Choice Privileges®
  • Air France-KLM
  • Flying Blue
  • Avianca LifeMiles
  • British Airways Executive Club
  • Iberia Plus

Wells Fargo plans to announce new transfer partners, but this is a useful starting group. With these partners, you can book flights with every major airline alliance and most of the biggest U.S.-based airlines.

If you're interested in flights on domestic U.S. airlines, you can book American Airlines and Alaska Airlines flights through British Airways, with flights under 650 miles in distance for just 7,500 points and flights under 1,151 miles for just 9,000 points. You can reserve flights on United Airlines through Avianca for as little as 7,500 miles one-way. And if you want to book a flight on Delta, you can book through its partner Air France-KLM.

Let's say you want to visit Europe — you could transfer the 60,000 points you earn from the welcome bonus to Avianca and book a round-trip award from almost anywhere in the U.S. to your European destination. Avianca often charges fewer miles for certain trans-Atlantic flights, so you could have points left over after visiting Europe

If you want to fly in style, Iberia offers one-way business-class awards from cities such as Chicago, Boston and New York to Spain for only 34,000 miles each way. That's a great deal for a ticket that can easily cost more than $3,500.

The Wells Fargo Autograph Journey Visa Card charges a $95 annual fee. It has no foreign transaction fees and the standard APR is a variable 21.24%, 26.24%, or 29.99% based on your creditworthiness.

Wells Fargo Autograph Journey℠ Visa® Card vs. Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card

Enjoy benefits such as 5x on travel purchased through Chase Ultimate Rewards®, 3x on dining, select streaming services and online groceries, 2x on all other travel purchases, 1x on all other purchases, and $50 annual Ultimate Rewards Hotel Credit, plus more.

Earn 60,000 bonus points after you spend $4,000 on purchases in the first 3 months from account opening. That's $750 when you redeem through Chase Ultimate Rewards®.

Read our Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card review .

The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card is similar to the Wells Fargo Autograph Journey Visa Card . Both cards have a $95 annual fee, travel protections and offer a variety of redemption options (including points transfers).

However, the Sapphire Preferred stands out in a few ways. It has a more robust list of travel protections including, trip delay reimbursement, primary rental car insurance, purchase protection and extended warranty protection . Unless you need cell phone coverage , the Sapphire Preferred has a better set of built-in insurance benefits compared to the Autograph Journey.

The Autograph Journey card earns more for most travel purchases, but the problem is Wells Fargo currently has a much smaller list of transfer partners. You can transfer the points you earn with Chase to 14 airlines and hotels including, Hyatt, Marriott, Southwest, Air Canada, Virgin Atlantic and United. As Wells Fargo adds more partners it may catch up, but right now Chase Ultimate Rewards points have a higher potential value and provide more versatility.

Wells Fargo Autograph Journey℠ Visa® Card vs. Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card

Capital one venture rewards credit card.

5 Miles per dollar on hotel and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel, 2X miles per dollar on every other purchase

Earn 75,000 bonus miles once you spend $4,000 on purchases within 3 months from account opening

N/A for purchases and balance transfers

19.99% - 29.99% variable

$0 at the Transfer APR, 4% of the amount of each transferred balance that posts to your account at a promotional APR that Capital One may offer to you

See rates and fees , terms apply.

If you don't spend much on travel or dining, the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card can be more rewarding because it earns at least 2X miles on every purchase. That means you could earn double the rewards on any purchases that fall outside of the Autograph Journey's bonus categories.

Capital One has 18 travel partners and direct access to all of the programs partnered with Wells Fargo except for Aer Lingus and Iberia. However, both of those airlines are part of the Avios program and you can transfer your Capital One miles from British Airways to Aer Lingus and Iberia. The only clear advantage the Autograph Journey has in the points transfer department is a better 1:2 transfer ratio to Choice Hotels. Unless you base your travel plans around using Choice points, the Venture Rewards card may be a stronger option for consumers who don't spend heavily on travel and dining.

It won't be hard for anyone interested in travel to justify having and holding the Wells Fargo Autograph Journey Visa Card . The points you'll earn for hotel (5X) and airline (4X) purchases are stunningly high and apply to any purchase in those categories. Even if you didn't earn bonus rewards points with hotels and airlines, you could make a strong case for getting this card because of the 3X points it earns for general travel and dining purchases. Plus, the $50 annual airline credit shouldn't be hard to use and helps offset more than half of the card's $95 annual fee.

However, if you want to earn rewards on spending other than dining and travel, other cards might be a better fit. And while the Autograph Journey has many good insurance benefits, it's missing a few key coverages such as primary rental car coverage .

The Wells Fargo Autograph Journey Visa Card has come out of the gate running and already compares favorably to the top travel credit cards. You'll be hard-pressed to find a more rewarding option for hotel and airline purchases . Cardholders will also soon have access to transfer partners, and although the list of partners is smaller than comparable programs, it will grow from here.
