A superb river cruise on the Rhone. !00% to Emerald Waterways
This was our third river cruise with Emerald Waterways and in many ways it was the best one. We are familiar with their ships and we found Emerald Liberte on the Rhone to be a bit smaller than those on which we had travelled on the Danube and Rhine. Somehow the smaller number made for an even better cruise though nothing we had experienced before in terms of facilties was lacking. Once again we had a cabin on the lowest deck and we are glad we did not spend several hundred pounds more to be on a higher one and especially as most of the sailing was during the nights. Its something worth thinking about on this particular cruise. The service from all crew members was exceptionally good as was the food. Particularly outstanding was the Cruise Director Yana who worked tirelessly to help all passengers to enjoy the cruise. She was a mine of information, always ready to help and had a great sense of humour. We heard nothing but praise of her from other passengers. As to the places from which we started and at which we stopped and finished every one of them was v. interesting and enjoyable. The lovely summer weather made it all the better.
I have just returned from a trip on the Saone and Rhone on the Lord Byron via Eurostar, which was an interesting and hassle free way to travel. Having just read an utterly negative review by a previous traveller, I have to say I am at a loss to think he was on the same ship on the same river. Travelling with a friend we both found the cruise relaxing and enjoyed going through all the locks en route, what does one expect on a working river with large fall from source to estuary. You have to get down it somehow! We found the dining room crew to be efficient and polite at all times, and all with a great sense of humour, even with the difference in language. The food was excellent, plenty of choice at breakfast and lunch and then a 4 course dinner with a choice of 3 main dishes with a starter and soup, if you wish. There is a drinks package but if you do not drink then buying wine by the glass is an option, or by the bottle. Bar prices were reasonable too. There is no high powered entertainment like you get on the big cruise ships, but I prefer that. We had a fun music quiz one night and there is a resident musician, but he was not particularly good. The taped music in bar was better. On the sun deck there are shades that are put up when there are not bridges to be negotiated, then the crew take them down. If it is hot then it can get very hot on the sun deck without them, but there are other places to sit if you need the shade. There is the Lido bar which is small and serves an Early Bird Lunch which is much lighter than what is available in the main restaurant. Make sure you read the itinerary completely so you have no surprises like the negative traveller had. If he had, he would have appreciated that there was a mix of city walking tours and coach trips, all well balanced with time to yourself if you want it. And none of the trips are obligatory, but as they are included in the price, I guess one feels one should go on them. The excursions were extremely interesting and the Ardeche Gorge was amazing to see, as was the Pont du Gard. The guides were excellent and founts of knowledge especially the lady in Beaune, she knew so much about the wines it was very educational. The service standards throughout the ship were very high. I can totally recommend this cruise, but pick your time, I think by the end of Sep into Oct the weather might not be so sunny all the time as it was for us. Disembarkation was very easy although the train trip back to London was fairly long
We booked a weeks cruise taking a bit of a gamble by choosing to occupy cabins on the Emerald Deck which in fact were the cheaper cabins by far. It certainly was a wise choice, not only did we make great savings but the cabins were ideal, very quiet and extremely comfortable. It seems the only difference was the size of the windows. The food was very good with great choices at each meal, but we enjoyed exceptional service especially from the waiters 'SVET' and 'FLORA' The teams were very well led by the Captain on the deck,to Daniel on the catering side. The shore excursions were marvellous with very knowledgeable guides who all presented with humour, when appropriate, but also demonstrated a terrific grasp of the local history. All in all a wonderful cruise full marks to Rivierra ans their onboard reps.Glenda & Keith.
Cruised on The Lord Byron, visiting Avignon and Arles. Also consisted of coach trips to vineyards and historical sites. All was fine, great boat and crew. However you need to be aware that there are many very senior people on the trip. If you are much below 70 years of age I'd think very carefully before choosing this type of trip. On land visits are short and very slow due to the lack of mobility of elderly passengers. I am 70 and I felt positively young! I am fortunate in being fit and a rambler, hence at times it was very frustrating.
There is so much history here, so much to see at each port but again so much nothing along the cruise until you get to yet another historic site, town or city including the only one Colosseum still in action and the bridge that doesn't go anywhere. It was a great cruise but unlike the Rhine and Danube many hours of seeing nothing but water or brush not as interesting when travelling slowing along it, but boy does it have history when you arrive somewhere, yes, absolutely this is a must.
Throughout the city and along the Rhone waterfront you come across anyone of the dozens of giant wall murals painted on the walls of buildings. Many are 3-5 stories in height. Stop by the Lyon tourist office or do some internet research to find where they can be viewed.

Classic Rhine cruise (Amsterdam-Basel) MS Crucevita
Fantastic cruise with welcoming and professional staff who went above and beyond to ensure we enjoyed our cruise. Comfortable beds, flexible cabins that could be reconfigured during the day to provide lounge chairs, great food with good choice at each meal, great rapport with staff, and a small, clean, ship. Loved our experience.
Holland & Belgium Tulip River Cruise (Amsterdam - Brussels - Amsterdam)
This was my first canal tour so was not really sure what to expect. I enjoyed the experience although I was not anticipating only 4 English as a first language speaking people on the tour.
Romantic Rhine (Southbound) 2024
Loved the tour and the included excursions. It would have been good to spend less time in Amsterdam and extra time sailing during the day. Also, a disco of an evening would be great!
Classical Rhine Cruise (Amsterdam - Basel) (10 destinations)
We thoroughly enjoyed our cruise. It was well organized and the food was superb.
From Amsterdam to Basel: The Treasures of the Celebrated Rhine River (port-to-port cruise)
Excellent facilities and services. Food was very good and cabins were large with plenty of space
Tulip Time Cruise 2024
The crew, ship and meals were all very good. There was an issue with the wording of one of the tours that I paid an additional amount for and I will take it up with Avalon. Also with the room description I paid extra for the wall to wall windows. It was useless to have done that. Most of the time we were right next to another boat, or to a wall and there was no way we would even keep the curtains opened.
Castles along the Rhine (2024) (Amsterdam to Basel, 2024)
Captivating Rhine 2024 Start Amsterdam, End Basel
Through authentic Holland (port-to-port cruise)
We loved this tour of Holland, and it was true to its name -- Authentic Holland. From the big cities of Amsterdam and Rotterdam, to the smaller towns of Gouda and Delft, and all the villages, canals, churches, windmills, historic buildings, and country-side sights in between, we could not have asked for a better up-close and authentic look at life in the Netherlands. The excursion to the Tulip Gardens was fantastic! The ship's crew and our tour guides were wonderful -- of the 96 passengers on board, our family of 6 and one other family of 4 were the only English-speaking guests. The crew and the guides went above and beyond to make sure that English communications were given "equal time", and it was very much appreciated. Even though we were in the definite minority (the majority being French) we never once felt uninformed or left out of the conversation or the activities. All in all, our tour experience was fantastic and immersive, and one we will never forget! We would suggest that more North Americans should discover for themselves what CroisiEurope has to offer!

Splendours of Europe (Start Amsterdam, End Budapest)
The program in the Emerald ship was magnificently planned and discussed. The local music during the cruise was so informative. Long live the music from the Netherlands and Germany through Austria and Slovakya to Hungary! Just for the music, dances and songs I will do the cruise again!
Tulips & the Rhine - Ludwigshafen – Schwetzingen (Start Amsterdam, End Zurich)
It was not excellent but good…entertainment lacked they had a girl singing that was one of the bartenders and some bell ringers..tours were good.We had one issue we found out that people that were going to train station had their fare covered and we thought transfer was just to airport.both were 30 mins away from port.some people had their fare covered to train station .we had to pay 75 euro.this we found unfair.food was good and waiters were exceptional but rest of staff mainly cruise director didn’t go above and beyond.
What people love about River Cruise Tours from Amsterdam
Great company to cruise with. Ship carries 110 passengers. Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner each day. Plenty of stops to sightsee. The castles along the Rhine make trip a very enjoyable cruise. All staff were great.
We had a great time but it rained every day and I very much wished I had roughy my winter coat!! The food was good but the portions were small. The room was small but comfortable. Many fellow travelers including myself wished for more to do on the ship. Maybe games to play, cards, etc.
It was a great cruise. The food was amazing, the crew was really helpful, and the tours and tour guides were great. The only thing to imporve on if the WiFi which only worked half the time.

See inside a new ultra-luxury river cruise line that's charging up to $59,520 per person
- Newcomer Riverside Luxury Cruises wants to break into the growing river cruise market.
- The ultra-luxury cruise line operates former Crystal ships in popular European rivers like the Danube.
- Riverside's 2024 cruises start at $1,055 per person for four days.
A new ultra-luxury cruise line wants to be the swankiest travel-by-river vacation option.
To do so, it's enticing cruisers with truffle-infused butter, $320-per-person dinners, and butlers that can be beckoned with a simple WhatsApp message.
Affluent travelers , meet Riverside Luxury Cruises.
The budding company first set sail in March 2023. With a year of service under its belt, its three ships are now sailing some of Europe's most popular rivers — starting at more than $260 per person per day.
Riverside is operated by Seaside Collection, a European hotelier.
The firm had its sights set on a river cruise venture since 2018, Jen Halboth, CEO of Riverside Luxury Cruises, told Business Insider.
Ironically, COVID-19 was the reason it got into the business.
Crystal Cruises declared bankruptcy in early 2022 amid the pandemic. Shortly after, Seaside purchased and updated five of the then-defunct cruise line's ships.
Three of these vessels now make up Riverside's fleet. The other two are being leased to competitor Uniworld River Cruises.
River cruising has become increasingly popular as wealthy travelers gravitate to ultra-luxury small-ship vacations.
River cruise ships are much smaller than their behemoth ocean-based counterparts, allowing Riverside to sail in waterways like Europe's Rhine, Rhone, Danube, Main, Moselle, and Saône rivers.
Along the way, guests can explore destinations many giant ships can't easily access — like Budapest, Hungary; Frankfurt, Germany; and Amsterdam — sometimes visiting more than one port in a day.
One of Riverside's shortest and cheapest 2024 voyages starts at $1,055 per person for a four-day Danube River cruise from Passau, Germany, to Vienna.
Alcohol and excursion packages can tack on an extra $75 to $175 per person per night.
Looking to ball out? The most expensive and longest itinerary is $59,521 per person for a three-river, 22-day cruise from Amsterdam to Budapest, Hungary, in the most expensive suite with the most inclusive package.
To compare, the cheapest 2024 voyage with all-inclusive luxury competitor Uniworld River Cruises starts at $2,000 per person for an eight-day Danube River sailing.
River cruisers tend to be over the age of 55.
But the new company is targeting guests 45 years old and older, specifically those who frequent luxury vacations but have yet to try a river cruise.
"New luxury travelers want to be pampered, get off and have an adventure, and come back and be taken care of," the cruise line's CEO said.
"Pampering” they will get.
Of Riverside's three ships, the 394-foot-long, 74-foot-wide Mozart can accommodate the most guests — up to 162, not including the 82 crew.
Yes, it's larger than Uniworld's ships, which range from 32 to 159 guests. But it's also significantly smaller than Royal Caribbean's new 9,950-person Icon of the Seas ocean vessel.
Like most cruise liners, Riverside's three ships have spas, buffets, and plush lounges and bars.
During the day, travelers can enjoy lunch at the open-air grill and relax to live music courtesy of Steinway and Bösendorfer pianos, no less.
At night, they can dine on a seven-course meal at the 295 euros ($320) per-person Vintage Room.
Riverside’s ships have up to 5 restaurants. Vintage Room is the only specialty option.
The cost to dine includes a wine pairing and plates like veal with truffle and chanterelle mushrooms and "surf and turf" with beef sirloin and scallops.
But don't expect a lackluster, rushed meal at the other complimentary options: "This is not a churn-and-burn," the company's CEO said of the ships' Waterside restaurants. "You come in for fine dining."
Infused, whipped butter is apparently one of Riverside's hottest commodities.
Sometimes, it has chiles. Other times, it's infused with citrus. If you're lucky, you'll get one with truffles.
"People were raving about our butter," Halboth said. "Everyone's waiting to see what butter they'll get at dinner each night."
Need to sleep off all that dairy? You're in luck. Every cabin has a king bed.
Riverside's suites range from 194 to 883 square-feet. These high-end cabins include butler service, stocked mini-bars, and espresso machines.
Some suites also have double-sink vanities and walk-in closets, a hallmark of an ultra-luxury cruise vessel .
Does Riverside’s more than $260 per person, per day fare seem reasonable now?
If yes, book soon. It'll only get more expensive from here.
These fares don't offset the amount Riverside is spending on amenities like the upscale food, according to Halboth. To make up for these expenditures, the cruise line plans to raise its prices gradually over the next two years.
The company's CEO said bookings have been 'a little lighter' since the start of 2024.
But the back half of the year is "filling up" thanks to Americans: About 70 to 80% of its guests are from North America, the company said.
Riverside will operate its Mozart, Ravel, and Debussy ships for three years as it 'hones the brand,' Halboth said.
The cruise line's two additional vessels would join its fleet in the next few years.
Given the growing popularity of river cruises , it's a good time for companies like Riverside to start expanding.
However, it could face plenty of incoming competition.
Jamie Loizou, the UK managing director of luxury river cruise line AmaWaterways, is forecasting 2024 as a "pivotal" year for the river cruise industry, noting that 15 new river-based vessels are expected to launch this year, Cruise Critic reported .
