For History Buffs

Centuries of history are perched atop Jebel al-Qala’a, Amman’s highest hill, where ancient Roman, Byzantine, and Umayyad ruins make up the area known as the Citadel. Visitors wander back in time through the stone-carved columns and vaulted chambers of the striking Temple of Hercules and Umayyad Palace. Farther down the hill, the impressive second-century Roman Theater, the center of ancient Philadelphia (Amman’s one-time moniker), is carved into the ridge. As a bonus, the Citadel’s high vantage point offers breathtaking views of downtown Amman.

For Festivalgoers

Amman’s burgeoning art scene sets the stage for some epic festivals. Every summer, thousands of revelers flock to King Hussein Park for the Amman Summer Festival—a joyful explosion of dance, music, and art. In May, spectators can view graffiti masterpieces at the Baladk Street Art Festival , and in July, the Franco-Arab Film Festival showcases French-Arab productions. Can’t make it during the summer? Embrace the drama at the European Film Festival held in November.

For Fashionistas

Weave your way through the city’s winding souks, where vendors hawk eclectic wares. Grab authentic souvenirs, lanterns, jewelry, and antiques in Souk al-Bukharia in downtown Amman. For shoppers looking to splurge, head to the aptly named Gold Souk, where intricate gold and silver jewelry adorns window displays, tempting shoppers to empty their wallets. If you’re looking for vintage fashion inspiration, stop by the Jordan Folklore Museum and Museum of Popular Tradition , both located within the Roman Theater, which display traditional Jordanian and Palestinian costumes, jewelry, and headdresses.

For Foodies

baklawa in Amman, Jordan

Trays of baklawa sit ready for people to enjoy in Amman, Jordan.

Treat your taste buds to the spicy and sweet flavors of Amman. Next to the King Hussein Mosque, the smells of candied fruits, flaky baklawa , and syrupy kanafeh (a sweet cheese pastry) sweeten the air at the Souk Al-Sukar, or sugar market. Sharpen your cooking skills at Beit Sitti , where visitors learn how to prepare their own four-course meal. Those looking for fine dining with an old-world atmosphere should venture to Kan Zaman , which serves up traditional Jordanian and Levantine cuisines. Vaulted stone ceilings, softly lit lanterns, and Arabic music transport diners to a different century. For traditional Arab dishes, feast on falafel in the family-run Hashem , order mansaf at Sufra Restaurant , and satisfy your sweet tooth with some baklawa at Jabri Restaurant .

For Architecture Fans

Amman boasts Islamic architecture spanning from ancient times to the modern age. Four towering minarets announce the pink-and-white King Hussein Mosque. The Ottoman-style construction was rebuilt in 1932 over the site of an ancient mosque from A.D. 640. On Fridays during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, worshippers often spill out onto the streets. Venture farther east, where the turquoise-domed King Abdullah Mosque, a memorial to the late King Hussein’s grandfather, pops against the sandy-colored landscape. The dome is adorned by intricate Quranic inscriptions and accommodates thousands of worshippers. Another 15 minutes east, Abu Darwish Mosque sits on Jebel al-Ashrafiyeh, one of Amman’s seven hills, and is most notable for its stunning facade, made up of alternating layers of black and white stone. (See “ How to Visit a Mosque .”)

For Night Owls

For many, the fun begins when the sun goes down. Dance to the beats of a live DJ at H20 Pool and Lounge at the Kempinski Hotel . Enjoy your brew with a spectacular view at the Ghoroub Lounge on the rooftop of the Landmark Hotel, or dine under the fiber-optic chandeliers of 32º North at the Grand Hyatt. Those looking for a more low-key night can relax at one of Amman’s trendy shisha and coffee lounges scattered across the city. Head to eclectic Rainbow Street and order some local eats and fruity-flavored shisha at Jafra Restaurant & Cafe while listening to live music. Relax into a pile of bright pillows at the funky Azkadenya Arabic restaurant, grab dessert with an extra side of swag at Fashion Café , or sip on a coffee with a good book at the psychedelic Books@Café .

For Day-Trippers

the Dead Sea in Jordan

Visitors rest under white umbrellas on the shore of the Dead Sea in Jordan.

Amman is an ideal base for making day trips to nearby attractions. An hour from the city, at 1,300 feet below sea level, lies the lowest point on Earth: the Dead Sea. Due to its high salinity, mud-slathered bathers float on top of the mineral-rich waters, which are believed to have healing properties. In the same trip, visitors can stop in the old town of Madaba , known for its vibrant collection of Byzantine-era mosaics and religious diversity.

For Fans of Art

Amid the ruins of a sixth-century Byzantine church, Darat al-Funun hosts, exhibits, and supports the work of contemporary Jordanian and Arab artists in renovated 1920s buildings. It is believed that T. E. Lawrence—the storied Lawrence of Arabia—was once a guest in the main Venetian-style building. In the historic Jabal Amman neighborhood, Nabad Art Gallery hosts the work of emerging Jordanian artists, rotating several exhibitions throughout the year.

the Cave of the Seven Sleepers in Jordan

Just south of Amman, the Cave of the Seven Sleepers is filled with ancient stone sarcophagi.

A short drive to the outskirts of Amman, Iraq al-Amir , the “Caves of the Prince,” dot the picturesque olive groves of the Jordan Valley. Near the caves, Qasr al-Abd, the ruins of a grand Hellenistic palace, dominate the landscape. Fifteen minutes south of Amman in the village of Rajib, the Cave of Seven Sleepers is filled with carved sarcophagi from the late Roman and Byzantine periods. According to the tale of the Seven Sleepers—which appears in Syriac, Latin, Greek, and Arabic sources—Christian youths who faced persecution by the Roman emperor slept in the caves for 300 years in a divine miracle.

For Spa Lovers

Let your worries evaporate in the steamy chambers of Al-Pasha Turkish Bath or the beautiful marble baths of Alf Layla Wa Layla , where visitors are treated to a luxurious soak, scrub, and massage. About an hour outside of Amman in the hills of the Dead Sea, the mineral-rich thermal waterfalls of Hammamat Ma’in feed a variety of public pools nestled in a striking landscape.

As Jordan is landlocked, there are no direct sea routes to Amman. However, if you are arriving by cruise ship to the nearby port of Aqaba on the Red Sea, you can take a taxi or bus from Aqaba to Amman, which is approximately a 4-hour drive.

20 Fun & Unique Things to Do in Amman, Jordan

Home » Blog » Jordan » 20 Fun & Unique Things to Do in Amman, Jordan

In the buzzing capital of Jordan, you’ll find ancient ruins, delicious food, and a modern urban vibe. There are so many awesome things to do in Amman—this vibrant city is worth at least a few days of exploration. In this guide, we’ll go over the details of our favorite Amman experiences.

Things to do in Amman

Amman is often overlooked by visitors, using it as just a stop-over on their way to visit Petra and the Dead Sea. However, Jordan’s capital city is incredibly charming and we wholeheartedly recommend exploring it for a few days. In fact, we’ve heard it referred to as one of the best-kept secrets in the Middle East and we fully agree!

Home to several excellent museums, intriguing ruins, lively markets, and the country’s best cafes, restaurants, and nightlife, there are tons of awesome things to do in Amman. Plus, with well over one-third of Jordan’s population, the city showcases a beautiful and fascinating contrast between traditional and modern Middle Eastern culture.

At the heart of a dramatic valley, Amman offers beautiful views, especially from the citadel and at night when lights twinkle throughout the city. The cafe culture is thriving and don’t even get me started on the food…the FOOD!

In a country so small, Amman is just a short drive from many of the best things to do in Jordan, making it an ideal urban basecamp for exploring the rest of the country!

Hot tip: the Jordan Pass

The Citadel Amman Jordan

Before your arrival in Jordan, you may want to look into getting the Jordan Pass to save you time and money on entrance fees. If you plan on visiting some of the historical sites around Amman as well as elsewhere in the country (such as Petra !), the Jordan Pass is a no-brainer.

At 70-80 JOD, the pass is not cheap, but combining the free access to over 40 tourist attractions in Jordan (including a few on this list, as noted below!) with the waived visa on arrival fees, it can actually be a huge money-saver.

Check out our guide to the Jordan Pass to help you understand how to use it, where to use it, and if it’s worth purchasing for your trip.

1. Take a free walking tour

Amman Jordan free walking tour

Taking a walking tour is usually one of the first things I look into doing when visiting a new city. It is the best way to get my bearings in a new place, and get some local perspective. Plus my tour guides often turn out to be great resources for figuring out my new city and sometimes even make good friends!

Before arriving in Amman I found it difficult to discern if there was an official free walking tour of the city. After pursuing Airbnb Experiences and Get Your Guide, and seeing prices for city tours upwards of $50 USD for a couple hours, I was a bit nervous.

I found a free tour of Amman on GuruWalk that sounded like what I was looking for and had great reviews. Though I was a bit skeptical having never used the site before, our guide, Mujallie, was very friendly and super informative. The tour was exactly as advertised.

My friend and I were joined by another couple and the five of us chatted away as we walked about the city, taking in the scenes and learning about the history and local culture. It was a fantastic tour and a great introduction to Jordan.

2. Stroll the Citadel

The Citadel Amman Jordan

Perched on a hilltop overlooking the city, the Citadel illuminates Amman’s ancient history. Archaeologists have found relics here dating back to the Bronze age — around 1500 B.C. Through the ensuing thousands of years, this area was inhabited by Babylonians, Romans, Byzantines, and Umayyads, making it one of the oldest continuously inhabited places on Earth.

With an impressive number of structures still intact, the history comes alive right before your eyes. The Roman Temple of Hercules (circa 2nd century) and the Umayyad Palace (from the 8th century) are especially breathtaking!

In addition to the sights themselves, the hill provides a great view of Amman. We highly recommend coming about 1.5 hours before sunset to explore the remains, then watching the sun drop below the city. Seeing the contrasting skyscrapers and ruins bathed in an orange glow is an unforgettable experience!

*Entrance to the Citadel is included in the Jordan Pass.

3. Climb the steps of the Roman Theater

Roman Theater Amman Jordan

Built between 138-161 CE, the 6,000 seat Roman Theater is another one of Amman’s impressive historical sites. Situated on a hill opposite the Citadel, the famous landmark dates back to the period of Roman occupancy when the city was known as Philadelphia. (Random, right!?)

Today the theater is still used as a cultural center of Amman, hosting events such as the Amman International Book Fair and Amman Marathon prize ceremony. The Royal Film Commission puts on outdoor movie events at the theater, and the venue even hosts concerts, most notably the Al-Balad Music Festival.

When it’s not being used as an event venue, the Roman Theater is open to the public and locals love to gather there, often crowding the steps by 10 a.m. and not vacating until after dark.

*Entrance to the Roman Theater is included in the Jordan Pass.

4. Fill up on mezze

Hummus mezze Amman Jordan

Extremely popular throughout the Middle East, Turkey , the Balkans, and northern Africa, mezze refers to “small plates” (i.e., tapas), but it’s more a way of eating, rather than a specific food.

Typically, you’ll find a table covered with various small plates, which could be individual appetizers or the main course, divided into servings. Mezze dishes can be hot or cold, something as simple as olives and bread or more complex, like Kubbeh , meat-filled dumplings.

Sampling mezze is a great way to try the local cuisine — and boy is it delicious! Here’s a quick roundup of some of my favorite plates.

  • Hummus : I love fresh hummus, and eating hummus in Amman is like getting it from the source. I was surprised to find out that it’s often eaten for breakfast and sometimes served as a hot dish with meat on top.
  • Labaneh : A creamy, slightly sour, cream cheese-like concoction typically served with olive oil, Za’atar spices, and pita. So tasty!
  • Dolma : Like Greek Dolma, these are grape leaves stuffed with rice, spices, and sometimes meat.
  • Falafel : Another common dish throughout the Middle East, delicious Jordanian falafel is a popular fried street food made from chickpeas and spices.
  • Tabouleh : Made from a small couscous-like grain called bulgur, this light salad is loaded with fresh flavors like parsley, tomatoes, herbs, and olive oil.

5. Take a cooking class

We’re pretty vocal about our love for cooking classes (and, let’s be honest, food in general!) on Two Wandering Soles. A great way to truly immerse yourself in local culture, meet new people, and support local families, cooking classes are consistently some of our favorite activities when we travel.

After hearing about all the delicious Jordinian cuisine, why not try a cooking class in Amman!?

There are plenty of options for cooking classes in Amman, including options that emphasize vegetarian and vegan cooking. Even though we’re decidedly carnivores, we actually eat a ton of veggie-based meals, especially when we’re away from home, so we loved to see this option available.

At Beit Sitti , you can choose your class based on the dish being prepared. There are also some highly rated options available on Airbnb Experiences, such as this one with Shereen .

6. Indulge in kanafeh

Kanafeh dessert Jordan

As you may have noticed, I practically ate my way through Amman — this city has some seriously delicious foods! One of my favorite new dishes I tried was kanafeh. A unique dessert popular throughout the Middle East and Turkey, Amman’s variations are especially tasty.

Prepared with a thin pastry called kataifi , kanafeh involves crispy noodle-like wisps of dough soaked in a sweet syrup and layered with cheese… Yes, you read that right—a cheesy dessert!

The dessert is drizzled in rosewater syrup and topped with pistachios, and is typically enjoyed alongside a cup of tea.

With the tangy, salty cheese flavors, I love how this dish balances contrasting sweet and savory elements. Every bite combines crispy elements and gooey, cheesy deliciousness — a recipe for an unexpected but addictive dessert!

7. Stroll Rainbow Street

Rainbow Street Amman Jordan

A promenade bustling with restaurants, bars, cafes, and plenty of photo-ops, Rainbow Street was one of my favorite spots in Amman for an afternoon stroll.

Several sections of the street are decorated with colorful lanterns and there are dozens of patios and chic rooftop spots to linger on, many with panoramic views of the city. It makes a great spot for people-watching as well.

Especially on Friday and Saturday evenings, Rainbow Street fills with people and buzzes with energy — it’s clear to see why this is one of the most popular things to do in Amman!

8. Enjoy the view from a rooftop bar or cafe

View of Amman Jordan from the rooftop

I fell in love with the lounge-like, easygoing nature of Jordan’s cafe scene. As social meeting hubs, locals and tourists alike congregate over cups of coffee or tea to unwind (as a predominantly Muslim country, you’re far more likely to be invited to tea than for a cocktail!).

Because Amman is such a hilly city, there are several cafes and bars with great rooftop views. Many double as restaurants, serving food alongside drinks or having a separate bar area. Here are a few noteworthy spots to check out:

  • Cantaloupe : Located on Rainbow Road, Cantaloupe has cocktails, wines, and European-influenced food accompanied by the most expansive view over Old Town
  • Sekrab : An eclectic retro-style rooftop bar with street snacks, beers, and a casual vibe
  • Dunia : For a more Middle Eastern-inspired bar with a local feel, head to Dunia for a modern Arabic vibe in a less touristy part of the city

9. Shop in Al Balad

Al Balad is a vibrant marketplace with colorful produce, jewelry, artisan crafts, souvenirs, and more. Situated next to the Roman Theater downtown, the market’s central location and lively atmosphere make it one of the best things to do in Amman.

Very much an active locals’ marketplace, the range of spices and products for sale is impressive. Plus, friendly merchants often offer samples and you can purchase local street food, juices, and snacks to munch on while you browse.

In addition to the vibrant food section, Al Balad is also an ideal place for souvenir shopping. From classic trinkets to scarves, rugs, rings, and more, nothing beats the experience of purchasing from an active local market. Don’t forget that negotiating on price is the norm—some vendors actually encourage it!

10. Browse the souks

souks in Amman Jordan

Amman’s vibrant market culture doesn’t end in Al Balad. There are several other souks, or bazaars, each with their own unique atmosphere. Many occur only on weekends, similar to flea markets in the U.S.

A favorite to visit for souvenir shopping is Souk Jara, held on Fridays near Rainbow Street. Many small artisan producers set up shops, selling everything from soaps to condiments to quirky antiques.

Another fascinating market is Souk el-Joumea, also held on Fridays. Primarily a second-hand clothing market for locals, the vendors spill out into a vast maze on the edge of downtown. Energetic and immersive, it provides a fascinating glimpse into the city’s culture.

11. Search for street art

Amman Jordan street art

Throughout this sprawling city, you will see murals around every corner. There are some really unique art pieces with great detail, and even some pretty interesting political pieces. Stroll through the street and take pictures of your favorites.

12. Peep the King Abdullah Mosque

King Abdullah Mosque

Completed in 1989, the King Abdullah Mosque accommodates some 10,000 worshippers in its grand interior and courtyard. The only mosque open to non-Muslim visitors in all of Jordan, it’s worth your time to stop by to see the magnificent prayer hall and blue-capped dome.

Keep in mind it’s not open for visits during prayer times, and men must wear pants, while women must cover their heads, arms, and legs to go inside. Note: It’s possible to borrow headscarves near the entrance.

13. Make your own perfume

perfume making in Amman Jordan

There’s a rich tradition of perfume-making in Amman. Downtown perfume shops are lined with row upon row of identical-looking glass bottles, each containing a distinct aroma. The perfume-makers possess an astonishing ability to match the scents from memory, mixing various bottles to create your desired scent.

One of the most unique things to do in Amman, you can pop into one of these shops and leave moments later with your very own signature scent! It’s certainly a more unique souvenir than an “I heart Jordan” t-shirt.

14. Discover the old Post Office

Duke’s Diwan Amman Jordan

Known today as the Duke’s Diwan , this post-office-turned-hotel-turned-art-gallery showcases a slice of Amman’s history dating back an entire century. One of the oldest buildings in the city, Duke’s Diwan houses well-preserved 1920s furniture, photographs, and memorabilia cataloging its prominence as a cultural hub.

Music, poetry, and painting events are held here frequently. We definitely recommend a stop while exploring Amman, especially if you’re near Al Balad. Entrance is free and a visit only takes about 15-20 minutes.

15. Shop for gold

shop for gold in Amman Jordan

There’s a dazzling variety of gold jewelry (gold everything , really) sold in Amman. The best place to shop is at Souk el-Sagha, which is lined with a multitude of vendors.

Jordan’s most prominent jewelry makers all have storefronts here and there are smaller, lesser-known merchants, too, so you’ll have a huge selection. Many sellers also offer the opportunity to engrave a name in Arabic on jewelry, making a unique gift.

Keep in mind that the price of gold is regulated by the government in Jordan, so unlike most other market goods, you will not be able to negotiate a bargain.

16. Relax at a hammam

Turkish Hammam at Sacred House Cappadocia

Popular throughout the Islamic world, hammams (or Turkish baths) are public baths, typically offering massages, body scrubs, and steam rooms. Some are luxurious, offering spa-like atmospheres, while others are more basic, purely functional places to bathe.

In Amman, most hammams are akin to a sauna, offering a wide range of pools, shower rooms, tailored experiences with some spa treatments, and more.

The hammam ritual typically includes resting on a heated stone slab (very relaxing!) and getting scrubbed down head to toe with an exfoliating cloth and cloud-like bubbles. Since it’s a very normal part of Jordanian culture, you can experience a hammam without the steep price point you might find at a western spa.

We love participating in local spa rituals, as we’ve found that it’s an excellent, relaxing, and generally non-touristy way to learn about the local culture.

17. Visit a museum

Amman Museum_Stock-U

As Jordan’s cultural hub, Amman has several fascinating museums to visit. A great way to get some enlightening background on the country’s history, it’s the perfect activity on a rainy or extra hot day.

If you’re interested in adding a museum to your list of things to do in Amman, here’s a roundup of three particularly noteworthy ones.

  • Jordan Museum : Opened in 2014, this museum was created to house Jordan’s ever-growing archaeological finds. Filled with interactive exhibits accompanied by well-written descriptions, it does a great job of encapsulating the country’s ancient history. Especially noteworthy artifacts include one of the oldest-known statues of a human and the copper Dead Sea Scroll.
  • Archeological Museum : Jordan’s original archeological museum sits on the Citadel, right next to the outdoor ruins. Despite appearing compact from the outside, the museum houses an astounding number of artifacts spanning over 8,000 years of history. Entry is free with entrance to the Citadel (and included in your Jordan Pass), so it’s definitely worth a stop if that’s your kind of thing.
  • Royal Automobile Museum : Looking for a changeup to something more modern? The Royal Automobile Museum is a surprising delight. The collection spans from the first cars ever brought to Jordan to modern-day supercars. You’ll even find the rover from The Martian movie at the museum, since the movie was filmed in Wadi Rum!

Bonus: Day trips from Amman

In addition to all the interesting things to do in Amman proper, there are several awesome day trips you can take from Amman to explore more of Jordan!

18. Hike through Wadi Mujib Canyon

hiking Wadi Mujib canyon Jordan

For an adventurous day trip, head to Wadi Mujib Canyon, about 1.5 hours south of Amman. A slot canyon with a rushing stream weaving through its towering walls, the canyon is less of a hike and more like an adult waterpark-meets-obstacle course.

Over the course of a mile, you’ll need to wade, swim, and clamber up rocks in a well-maintained and thoughtfully laid-out setting. There are ladders and ropes adhered to the canyon walls in strategic places, and spotters are on standby to assist passing hikers if necessary.

The excursion is easily organized as a day trip from Amman, best done with either a hired driver or a rental car. And since the canyon is right next to the Dead Sea, you can also combine your hike with a salt float for a fun, nature-filled day!

Keep in mind Wadi Mujib Canyon is only open during the summer months, typically closed to the public from early October through March.

If you’re interested, we have a complete guide to hiking the Siq Trail through Wadi Mujib , including insider tips on how to save money and avoid the crowds.

19. Float in the Dead Sea

Floating in the Dead Sea Jordan

Technically a hypersaline lake with a depth of over 1,000 feet and sitting at the lowest elevation on Earth, there’s nothing quite like the Dead Sea. Only an hour from the city, don’t skip a day trip — it’s one of the most fascinating things to do in Amman (and all of Jordan)!

There are several ways to reach the Dead Sea, with options suiting different budgets and expectations about what you’d like from the experience.

Since the water is so salty, a classic beach day is typically enjoyed from one of the dozens of waterfront resorts. It’s difficult to relax lakeside under the desert sun in super buoyant water that makes you bob rather than leisurely float! However, a pool, shade umbrellas, and a bar create a much more pleasant environment. Plus, nearly every resort offers a cleansing mud bath, which is a must-do Dead Sea experience!

Alternatively, if you’d simply like to see what the Dead Sea and its unique salt formations look like and go for a quick dip, it’s best to rent a car or hire a driver.

If you’re interested in more information, we have a guide to visiting the Dead Sea , including where to float for free and tips on accommodation and transportation.

20. Go back in time at the ruins of Jerash

Arch of Hadrian Jerash Jordan_STOCK-Pex

Dating back to Roman times, it almost feels inaccurate to call Jerash “ruins” — it’s one of the most well-preserved ancient cities in the world. Deservedly one of Jordan’s major tourist attractions, it’s magical to get lost among the arches, columns, and temples of this once-thriving trade and cultural hub.

The archaeological site is quite large, easily taking up three or four hours of exploration. Since there isn’t a lot of information about the buildings onsite, we recommend hiring a guide to explain their significance. However, even without one, the ruins are jaw-dropping! We especially recommend stopping by the amphitheater and Adrian’s Arch.

Located about an hour from Amman, Jerash is an easy day trip, with plenty of buses, tours, and taxis available to visit this spectacular historical attraction.

*Entrance to Jerash is included in the Jordan Pass.

Where to eat in Amman

Mezze in Amman Jordan

If you haven’t already picked up on it, food is an important part of Jordinian culture and finding the best places to eat in a new place is sort of my specialty. Below are my top recommendations for places to eat in Amman.

Cafe/breakfast:

  • Rumi Cafe : My favorite morning stop, with just a few delicious breakfast items (try the “local white cheeses” meal akin to a Turkish breakfast).
  • Dimitri’s Coffee : A good cafe to work from
  • Zgahairon Cafe : A small little artist collective and cafe run by all women.
  • Almond Coffee House : Another good cafe to work from.

Lunch/street food:

  • AlQuds Falafel : Recommended by our walking tour guide as the best falafel in town. ( Second location )
  • Dali : A good cafe to work from with lots of indoor and outdoor seating serving up local and western fare.
  • Hashem Restaurant : Depending on who you ask, this no-frills local eatery has the best falafel in town.
  • Shams El Balad : A nice cafe for breakfast or lunch with local dishes.
  • Shawerma Reem : Best shawarma stand, with locals lining up in front to prove it.
  • Habibah Sweets : One of the best places to try kanafeh, baklava and other local desserts. ( second location )
  • Sufra : Elevated Jordinian food. Must make a reservation ahead of time.
  • Oliva : A local favorite Italian restaurant serving up wood-fired pizzas and pastas.
  • Jafra : A traditional restaurant offering plenty of local favorites and alongside hookah. Ask for a seat on the balcony for good views of downtown.
  • Romero Restaurant : A Mediterranean/Italian fusion restaurant with beautiful garden and rooftop seating.

Where to stay in Amman

Amman Jordan

With distinct neighborhoods sprawling across eight picturesque hills, there are several Amman districts to choose from for accommodation. As a very pleasant surprise, most options are rather affordable and comfortable, with lots of nice amenities.

Traffic in the city tends to get quite congested, so it’s best to consider where you plan to explore most before deciding.

Amman is generally split into two distinct halves. The eastern side is more historic and conservative, while the western half is home to more businesses, skyscrapers, and nightlife.

The three main neighborhoods tourists tend to visit most are in the city center, almost straddling the line between the two halves. Look for accomodation in these areas for a great mix of historical attractions and familiar comforts.

  • Jabal Amman: Amman’s cosmopolitan center provides a wonderful mixture of pleasantly bustling streets, historic buildings, and lively cafes. Home to Rainbow Street, there’s a palpable youthful vibe here.
  • Downtown: This can be confusing since Amman has two downtowns. One is the old market core and the other is an ever-changing business center defined by modern skyscrapers. For a more cultural experience, we recommend old downtown. It’s a vibrant neighborhood full of life, with the city’s best markets, fascinating old buildings, and a unique atmosphere.
  • Jabal Weibdeh: Similar to Jabal Amman, this neighborhood is filled with buzzing cafes and bars but is also adjacent to great historical sights. Plus, being a stone’s throw from the Citadel makes it an excellent base for many things to do in Amman.

A word of caution for women about safety in Amman

Downtown Amman Jordan

Amman was my first experience visiting the Middle East and an introduction to the region for me. I’d spent time in other predominantly Muslim countries, but never ventured into this often underrepresented or misunderstood region (from a Westerners point of view).

I’d read that Jordan is one of the safest and most stable countries in the region. At first sight, I felt Amman lived up to that reputation. The streets, albeit chaotic, felt safe and friendly. People didn’t seem to worry about carrying valuables or even leaving a purse hanging on the back of a chair while dining at a sidewalk cafe. A local friend told me the crime rate in Amman is very low.

Understanding that we were guests in a foreign culture with different belief systems than the ones we grew up with, my friend and I made sure to dress appropriately and keep our shoulders and knees covered while in public.

We fell in love with Amman, and compared to some of the other destinations we visited in Jordan (like Petra, which didn’t feel like a “local” experience at all, and Aqaba, where we felt the male gaze much more strongly) we didn’t feel very uncomfortable in Amman as women traveling alone… at first.

After some more time spent in Amman (we were there for a total of 12 days) the honks and stares from men started to get old. There were times when we felt uncomfortable with the uninvited interactions we were having with men (and sometimes even young boys). And there was more than one incident where we felt downright unsafe—being harassed and even groped in the streets.

My intention in sharing my experience is not to scare you away from visiting an otherwise incredible nation with plenty of wonderful, warm and welcoming people. It is simply meant as a word of caution, especially to my fellow female travelers.

The culture in this part of the world is different. Women do not have the same rights as they do elsewhere. And as such, you may be treated differently than what you are used to.

Traveling in a group, or with a male partner is one way to avoid some of the unwanted attention. Also, wear loose-fitting clothing that covers as much skin as possible.

If you are traveling to Jordan as a solo female traveler, be aware of your circumstance and manage your expectations.

Your trip to Amman cannot be complete if you don’t visit the Roman Theater located in downtown. To me it is the best thing to do in Amman and you will see why when you enter. This tourist attraction was likely built in the 2nd century AD. It has been restored beautifully, bringing back the days of the Roman Empire. The Roman Theater in Amman doesn’t fail to impress the views from the top are amazing, perfectly blending historic Jordanian heritage with the city’s vibrant modern-day life.

The Roman Theater has a capacity of 6000 people making it the biggest theatre from the Roman Philadelphia period in Jordan. The venue is actually still being used for concerts and events from time-to-time.

Looking for free things to do in Amman? Believe it or not but there is no entrance fee for visiting the Roman Theater in Amman, it is FREE! Climb up the stairs to the highest level for the most amazing views over the city. There are also two small museums free to visit on both sides of the amphitheater: Jordan Museum of Popular Traditions and the Jordan Folklore Museum.

Make sure to either visit the Roman theater early morning to the have it all for yourself or go around sunset to make your visit even more magical. The opening hours for the Amman Roman Theater are 08.00 am to 08.00 pm.

2. Amman Citadel

amman citadel

Another must see tourist attraction is the Amman Citadel perched on top of one of the highest hills in the city. From the Roman Theater there is a set of staircases that leads up to the Amman Citadel. The walk takes about 20 minutes though an old residential neighborhood with super friendly local people.

The Amman Citadel is home to several archeological sites and dates as far back as the Bronze Age (1800 BC). Visiting the Amman Citadel was one of the highlights of my Amman sightseeing trip. From the citadel you have incredible views over the capital of Jordan, but the best places to see here is the Temple of Hercules, built in the center of the citadel.

Five massive pillars on a podium is what’s remaining of the Temple of Hercules. The Temple of Hercules is believed to be constructed around 160 AD.

Close by, there is a large stone sculpture with three bent fingers, the hand of Hercules. This humanizing fragment was once part of a colossal statue of Hercules and is believed to have stood more than 4 meter (13 ft) tall.

umayyad palace

On the grounds of the Amman Citadel there is also the Umayyad Palace, the Jordan Archeological Museum and a Byzantine church which are worth visiting.

For more facts and historic background information check out the Amman Citadel Wikipedia Page .

The Amman Citadel entrance fee is 3 JD ($4) and is open from 08.00 am to 04.30 pm in winter and in summers from 08.00 am to 08.00 pm.

3.  Nightlife in Rainbow Street

rainbow street amman

Rainbow street offers a much more relaxing place for tourists to escape Amman’s chaotic traffic from Downtown. A place where tourists and locals mingle looking for a great night out. There are plenty bars, cafes and restaurants, a very well-known hotspot in the city which makes it the number 1 place to visit in Amman if you are looking for nightlife and entertainment. It’s liveliest on Thursday nights which is when Jordanians officially kick off their weekend.

The best places to visit in Rainbow Street are the romantic restaurant Mijana and the opposite bar called: C.LING, one of the best rooftop bars in Amman. Another all-time favorite, but a little more fancy restaurant is Sufra, I liked it. Great place for couples or to impress your date when traveling to Amman.

Just a couple of blocks from this tourist-friendly promenade there’s the Wild Jordan Center that sells locally made jewelry, trinkets, soaps, mugs as well as tasty organic food, and other souvenirs. The center is part of the wider Wild Jordan initiative which you can find at all national parks in Jordan and is run by the Royal Society for nature conservation.

In all honesty I don’t recommend visiting Rainbow Street during the day, there is not much going on these days. It is NOT the hippest spot in the city anymore, Lweibdeh is your place to visit in Amman if you’re looking for nice places to go for lunch. Personally, I find Rainbow Street a bit cheap and trashy these days.

4. Hip coffee places in Jabal Al Lweibdeh

lweibdeh amman

A new hip and trendy place to visit in Amman is the Jabal Al Lweibdeh neighborhood with Paris Square being its center. Of course, also located up on a hill so be prepared to walk a lot of stairs and steep streets to get here, but you will find plenty hip coffee places and charming restaurants with amazing views. From Downtown it is a 20-minute walk uphill.

One of my favorite coffee places is Dimitri’s Coffee Lweibdeh. These guys know what specialty coffee is. Also check out A small but lovely restaurant with good Italian food is Oliva just around the corner and opposite Dimitri’s Coffee you find a cool place with outdoor seating. It has an Arabic name, sorry…

Some more of my favorite places to visit in Lweibdeh are Bait Baladna, the most charming coffee place with awesome views and the chicer style Café at Manara Arts Center with equally cool views. Café at Manara is that place were digital nomads meet to work on their Macbooks.

When you are looking to having a drink there are also many hip cafes and bars around in Lweibdeh, meet a little more sophisticated crowd in Dali.

5. The blue-domed King Abdullah Mosque

king abdullah mosque amman

With its impressive 35m-diameter blue dome towering over the low-rise rooftops of Amman, the easily recognizable King Abdullah Mosque is another must see when visiting Amman. The mosque is located a bit away from Downtown, but nearby the modern new Amman center. From Lweibdeh it is only a 20-minute walk to visit the most beautiful mosque in Amman. My suggestion is to have lunch in Lweibdeh and then continue walking towards the King Abdullah Mosque.

The King Abdullah Mosque was completed in 1989 by the late King Hussein in honor of his grandfather. It is the most famous and largest mosque in Amman with a capacity of up to 10,000 people – 7,000 inside and 3,000 in the courtyard. There is a small section that can accommodate up to 500 women.

king abdullah mosque amman entrance fee

Unusual for a mosque but non-Muslims must pay 2 JD entrance fee for visiting the King Abdullah Mosque. Dress appropriately when visiting, that means for men wear long pants that cover the knees and women need to cover their head.

6. Get lost in one of the Amman Souqs

souk amman

The word Souq or Souk means market in Arabic and Downtown Amman is full of them. I would almost say all of Downtown is a souk. It’s hard to describing everything what’s going on here, starting from the colors, the noises, the smells, and the overall chaos, it is a beautiful happening. The souks here are something you just must experience for yourself, a great Amman activity.

Luckily you are spoiled for choice as there are 3 different souks in Downtown Amman.

The three most famous markets in Amman are: Souk Mango, Gold Souk and Souk El-Khodra. Best thing is that all the markets are located in Downtown, which therefore makes visiting the markets very easy.

souk mango amman

One of the oldest markets in Amman and famous for selling a lot of bridalwear, women’s clothing and accessories as well as religious clothes. You can also find a lot of footwear and perfume shops. Not really my kind of stores, but it is a place that can’t be missed when sightseeing in Amman.

Souk El-Khodra

souk el khodra

This was more my kind of market as this is where you will find local people buying their daily fruits, vegetables, nuts, meat, spices, etc. Get lost in the narrow backstreets behind the Grand Husseini Mosque, which is another great place to visit when sightseeing in Amman. The market vendors were very friendly and many of them offered me to try their goods or invited me to take photos without pushing me to buy stuff.

gold souk amman

A rather small gold souk, but nice to visit as it is just opposite Souk Mango. Here is of course where you can find gold and silver jewelry but be prepared to bargain when buying from the Gold Souk in Amman.

A unique thing to do or a so-called secret Amman travel tip is Souq Jara. A popular Amman tourist attraction but only open on Fridays from 10.00 am to 10.00 pm, so you have to plan your trip to Amman accordingly if you want to visit. You can find everything on this big flea market. It is located just off Rainbow Street and a great place if you’re looking for souvenirs, books, cheap vintage clothing, handicrafts, antiques and traditional Jordanian stuff.

When traversing the markets in Amman and want to take photos always politely ask the local people before snapping away. Keep in mind that big cameras always draw attention on markets and can come across intimidating.

I visited all of Amman Souks, it is simply fun to walk around and take it all in. Surely one of the best things to do in Amman.

7. Visit Duke’s Diwan historic townhouse

duke diwan townhouse amman

A very surprising tourist attraction in Amman. I read about this place in other Amman travel guides but wasn’t impressed by the stories. When I got there and saw the small open door on the main street in Downtown looking into a steep staircase leading into a dark hole. At this time I had even less expectations.

However, when I got upstairs and walked into a very traditional, but well-preserved local home I was very pleasantly surprised.

This historic townhouse was constructed in 1924 and is regarded as one of the oldest houses in Amman. It was initially used as a post office. Later on, it became the seat of the Ministry of Finance and after that, a hotel. The townhouse now belongs to a local businessman who is also the Duke of Mukhaybeh.

The Duke restored it to its original splendor, with antique furnishing, then opened it to the public to appreciate it. Visitors love its unique, vintage atmosphere.

If you’re lucky, you can even meet the duke in person, just like I did. He sat in one of his rooms talking to other visitors and happily got his photos taken and was up for a chat.

Visiting the Duke’s Diwan townhouse only takes about 10 minutes and it is free to enter. The house is located in the heart of Downtown so it can’t be missed. Put this on your Amman itinerary as I think it is one of the best things to do in Amman.

8. Learn the country’s history at the Jordan Museum

jordan museum amman

Visiting the Jordan Museum is one of those things oyu find in every travel guide for Amman, but let’s be honest I don’t think the people who read blogs are the types that visit history museum. However, for considering it to be one of the things to do in Amman I would only write about it when I would visit myself, so I did.

In the Jordan museum they will tell you all there is to about the story of the country, starting with the country’s earliest known inhabitants, going back 9,500 years ago. As you walk through you will slowly catch up with modern history. I spent about 1 hour inside the Jordan Museum and found it surprisingly interesting.

For me the most fascinating thing to see in the Jordan Museum was the Two Headed statue from Ain Ghazal which dates back to 7500 BC! You can see it on the photo above.

jordan museum amman entrance fee

There are surely a bunch of cool things to read and learn. However, in my opinion the entrance fee of 5 JD ($7) is not like whatever let’s just walk through.

The museum is located about 10 minutes walk away from Downtown next to the City Hall. Watch my vlog about the best things to do in Amman and decide for yourself if this is one of the must-see activity in Amman.

9. Smoke Shisha on a balcony in Downtown

shisha bars downtown amman

As you might have realized, most of the best places to see in Amman are located in Downtown: Roman Theater, the markets, the Duke’s Townhouse, the museum, the King Husseini Mosque, etc. When roaming in Amman Downtown I am sure you will spot some cool balconies with terraces.

amman downtown restaurants

These are popular places to go and smoke shisha. Just go to Downtown and look up. One of the most popular places is the Al Mamlakeh restaurant, its balcony has the best views over Downtown.

10. Photograph some amazing Murals in Amman

amman murals

My way of exploring cities is to get lost wandering from one tourist attraction to the other. While discovering Amman I stumbled across some fantastic murals and some of them are huge. It is totally worth it checking out some of the best wall paintings that are scattered around the cities and they also make some of the best Instagram spots in Amman. Even the Redbull website wrote about it, check out their list of the best murals in Amman .

11. Sundowner at Café Bait Baladna

bait baladna lweibdeh

When looking for a cool place to visit to watch the sunset then I found the best spot for you: Café Baladna. A very charming coffee shop a little hidden, but also in Lweibdeh. It is not the super chic place, but more bohemian style and I felt at home straight when I walked in. Check out the vibe in my vlog about Amman, when you see it I am sure that you want to go there for sunset too. Not only sunset drinks, it also is a favorite place where trendy locals  come to smoke shisha.

12. Lunch with a view at Dar Ne'meh

dar ne meh amman restaurant with view

A new addition to the vibrant cafe and restaurant scene is Dar Ne'meh right next to the Amman Citadel. Since it has such gorgeous views over the city I think it deserves a mention. They have a rooftop that gives you almost a 360 degrees view of Amman. It serves healthy food, vegetarian and local Jordanian food. I recommend you ordering a fresh and cold hibiscus drink to cool off and take in those gorgeous views. When looking for a cool restaurant with a view this is your place to go in Amman.

13. Try the famous Hashem Hummus and Falafel

hashem hummus falafel amman downtown

Amman is of course one of the best places in the country to try the local Jordanian food. Numerous restaurants offer a variety of dishes at different price ranges so you’re sure to find something for your budget when traveling to Amman.

One good touristy hotel that offers great food is the Hashem Restaurant. Their specialty is falafel and others like the hummus and baba ganoush. The food is served with herbs and bread, and if you feel thirsty after a long day of sightseeing, you’ll love their hot tea drink with mint. We’re not saying that you’re obligated to eat here – what matters is that you find a nice place with tasty food, quick service, and affordable rates.

knafeh traditional dessert amman

There are also a lot of shops that sell traditional sweets, which I am sure you’ll like if you have a sweet tooth. If you’re trying to live a sugar-free life, be warned – the sweets look very tasty and tempting. The traditional dessert that you will see everywhere in the streets of Amman is Knafeh, it is made with cheese. May sound weird, but it is yummy. Give it try when traveling to Amman.

14. The Abdali Boulevard

abdali boulevard amman

The newest addition to places to visit in Amman is the Boulevard next to the Abdali Mall. Remarkably not mentioned in any Amman travel guides, but this upscale modern chic place away from Downtown is regarded the new modern center. Here is also where you find the fancy hotels like the W Amman, a great place to stay in Amman. Along the boulevard of Abdali you find many restaurants and bars. A place where trendy locals hang out and a nice place to have either lunch or dinner.

15. Free Walking Tour

free walking tour amman

A free walking tour can’t be missed on a list of things to do in Amman. Everywhere I go I look for one of these tours. It is a great way to meet other travelers and learn to know the city through the eyes of a local guide. Besides, I love the extra info these knowledgeable guides provide you when visiting some of the historical sites. When joining a free walking tour in Amman you will see most of the best places to visit in the city in a couple hours, so definitely recommended to those who only have 1 or 2 days in Amman.

Check out the Free walking tours in Amman by Guruwalk . For those who are more adventurous you can also explore the best Amman tourist attractions on scooter. You will also find it in the link above.

16. Day trips from Amman

Last but not least I recommend you the check out some cool day trips from Amman. No need to tell you about the Dead Sea, but did you know that visiting the Dead Sea can be done on a day trip from Amman? You can just take an Uber actually.

The Dead Sea is one of the most popular places to visit in Jordan and every tourist knows about it, but did you know there are some really cool other things to do near Amman like: Qasr al-Abd, Jerash, As-Salt, and Madaba.

Only 30 kilometers out of the city center of Amman you find one of the newest additions to the UNESCO World Heritage list. As-Salt is charming city in the Balqa Highlands along the old highway from Amman to Jerusalem and got selected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in July 2021. Its charming narrow streets, multiple mosques and churches, fascinating historical buildings and amazing views make this one of the best places to visit near Amman and should surely be on your Jordan itinerary.

Qasr al-Abd

About 20 kilometers west of Amman you will find Qasr al-Abd, a large Hellenistic palace built in 200 BC with impressively large stones, the largest being 7 x 3 meter (23 x 10 ft), which makes these blocks among the largest in the Middle East. The ruins of Qasr al-Abd are very impressive. The front entrance and the carved lion make it worth visiting and a cool addition to this list of tourist attractions in Amman.

When visiting Amman many people recommended me to go to Jerash. Among my Instagram followers this seemed to be a favorite place to visit in Jordan. It is about 50 kilometer north of Amman, which makes it a cool day trip. Especially since Jerash has some fantastic historical and archeological sites. It is on the tentative list of UNESCO World Heritage sites and also called the Ancient Meeting Place of East and West. The Colonnaded Street and the Oval Forum are the best places to go in Jerash. These very well preserved ancient Roman ruins will make you travel back in time.

Another fun place near Amman is the ancient city of Madaba. The best thing to do in this historical city which is mentioned several times in the bible is to see the famous 6th century mosaic map of the Promised Land. Madaba is a Christian town and there are multiple Catholic, Greek Orthodox and Byzantine churches to visit. The most impressive I actually found the huge mosaic in the Church of the Apostles.

Is it safe to Travel to Jordan?

I didn’t feel unsafe one single second during these 10 days in Jordan. Even though I was not traveling alone, I had some me-time where I was on my own and I didn’t feel uncomfortable at all. That being said, we never went out of the town centers.

Okay, yes, some Jordanians are flirty but with a firm “No, thank you!” they get your point.

The extreme safety in Jordan, despite being surrounded by countries at war, is mostly due to the very severe penalties pending for those Jordanian citizens harming tourists.

So, yes, in retrospect, I would travel solo as a woman to Jordan. Particularly Wadi Rum is a lovely experience for any solo traveller.

Renting a car in Jordan

I visited Jordan with a rental car and absolutely recommend the experience.

Doing in total 1000 km in 10 days in Jordan , we had no bad experiences. Of course, you need to be a bit more careful than on European roads, but Jordanians usually drive cautiously.

Be aware of forgotten indicators and for countless speed controls on the road.

Our rental car was from Arena Cars at Amman airport. Check here the best prices for renting a car in Jordan.

Tours and Day trips from Amman

For activities, guided tours and day trips from Amman, I recommend GetYourGuide . Both have very competitive prices.

1. Visit the Citadel of Amman

things to do in Amman, Temple of Hercules at the Amman Citadel

  • 2 JOD, free with Jordan Pass

Whether you want to explore history or go sightseeing, the citadel is one of the biggest tourist attractions in Amman, Jordan. You can walk up to the citadel but should be aware that there are a lot of steps. Alternatively, a taxi ride to the citadel will cost around 1 JOD (1.41 USD).

I know that this is one of the most obvious places to visit in Amman, Jordan.

Even though I try to skip the most touristy things when I travel, the Citadel of Amman impressed me a lot and it’s on the top of my favorite things to do in Amman. It is also where I got some of my best photos of Jordan .

I highly recommend visiting the Citadel as early as possible in order to avoid the suffocating heat and the crowds. Sunset and sunrise are particularly enchanting moments from the 850 m high Jebel Al Qala’a hill.

The origins go back to 1800 BC and you don’t need to be a history buff in order to be blown away by the beauty of the site and the views.

It’s here where you realize what a cultural melting pot Jordan really is!

Book here your guided Amman City Tour

The site includes a Roman temple , a Umayyad Palace , a Byzantine church, a 1700 meter wall from the Bronze Age and much more. This architectural mix is truly unique and gives you an idea of Jordan’s cultural wealth and diversity. In my eyes, it is one of the best things to do in Jordan .

The most iconic place of Amman’s citadel is without any doubt the Temple of Hercules . The majestic columns and podiums are visible from several parts of Amman.

The Umayyad Palace is the next highlight of Amman’s citadel. Indeed, the citadel was also used as residential and royal complex in 720 AD. The domed audience hall and the cistern are testimonials of the architects of that time.

Watching the sunset or sunrise from the citadel hill is one of the most romantic things to do in Amman. Be aware that nights in Amman can get cold, thus check this packing list for Jordan.

2. The Roman Theatre

The best places to visit in Amman Jordan, Looking up at the Roman Theatre

Yes, this is another historical attraction that is a must see in Amman. So far, I have only seen Roman amphitheaters in Spain and Italy, but this one truly has blown me away by its size and almost perfect condition!

Located at a 20 min walk from Amman’s citadel, the Roman theatre is one of the most impressive legacies of Roman Philadelphia (Amman’s name during the Roman empire). I

t could hold up to 6000 people!

Book here your guided Amman City and Food Tour

Even though the theatre was restored in the 1950s with non-original materials, the result is certainly impressive. Nowadays, several cultural events such as concerts are hosted and I recommend to ask in your hotel’s reception or tourist office for the events schedule.

To me, it was one of the best tourist attractions in Amman and on top of my bucket list. The visit was for free.

Explore Downtown Amman

What to do in Amman Jordan, The markets of downtown Amman

After checking 2 of the most emblematic Amman tourist attractions, it’s about time to mingle with the locals! There is no better way to do so than in Amman downtown.

What to do in Amman? Well, the question should be rather, what NOT to see in Amman downtown!

The city center of Amman is surrounded by seven hills and is composed by the following main streets: Prince Mohammad, King Talal, Quraysh, Al-Salt, Al-Hashemi, and Basman.

All of them are packed with shops, markets, and trades selling everything from clothes to food, gold, and antiquities.

Book here your guided Amman Down Town Tour

Every street has its very own specialty when it comes to selling goods. Can you guess which one belongs to which street? There are plenty of things to see in Amman downtown and the souks are one of the highlights of every visit.

Amman’s downtown is also known as Al Balad and it’s perfect to wander around, observe the daily grind and have a fruit juice at any of the numerous stands. I found it to be one of the most fun places in Amman.

I felt very safe during the stroll.

4. Al Husseini Mosque Amman

Tourist attractions in Amman Jordan, outside view of Al Husseini Mosque Amman

The Al Husseini Mosque in Amman’s downtown is one of the top places to visit in Amman, Jordan. Located in the buzzing King Talal Street, the mosque is one of the oldest in Amman. It’s also one of the biggest in the area.

Built in 1932 on top of a former mosque built around 640, it can be visited by tourists if you’re dressed appropriately .

The mosque is close to 2 of the most famous souks in Amman: the Souq Al-Sukar selling spices, fruits, vegetables and nuts and the Souq Bukharia with its souvenir stalls.

5. Visit the Pigeon Market of Amman

Top fun places to visit in Amman Jordan, impressive view of the Roman Nymphaeum near the pigeon market of amman

The Pigeon Market is one of the most curious attractions in Amman, Jordan. Located close to Al-Hashemi street, at a stone’s throw from the Roman Nymphaeum, the gathering of hundreds of men caught my attention.

Then approaching them, I saw that they were selling paper bags … with pigeons in them! Needless to say that I was shocked to see all the poor pigeons captivated and being surrounded by such a commotion.

What are they doing with all those pigeons? There were thousands of them. Do they eat them?

No, not at all!

The pigeon market of Amman is important cultural spot because pigeon training is one of the national sports and pastimes in Jordan.

Dating back to 1150, the aim is to have as many pigeons as possible and to train them. Some are trained to fly back to their masters’ rooftop at their whistle, some fly back at the call of the muezzin’ call for prayer.

Strolling through the pigeon market is one of the top free things to do in Amman, Jordan .

6. Grab a fruit juice

What to do in Jordan Amman, spices and other goods for sale at a spice shop

While walking the streets of downtown Amman and the Al Husseini mosque, you’ll stumble upon numerous fruit stalls selling fresh fruit juices.

Every fruit stall is different and you’ll be spoilt for choice!

Another typical drink sold in the streets in the city center of Amman is sugar cane juice. You’ll recognize the stalls by the green-yellowish sugar canes behind the seller.

Sugar cane juice has the same effect as a Red Bull.

But don’t drink too much of it, as it’s known for its laxative effects!

The juice stand should be part of every Amman walking tour.

7. Visit Jabal Amman

best things to do in amman jordan, street art in jabal amman

The area of Jabal Amman is located close to the city center of Amman and is known as the 1st circle on Jabal. Named after the hill where the area is located, only the rich and wealthy used to live in this neighborhood.

Nowadays, Jabal Amman is becoming increasingly famous for its bohemian atmosphere and for being a cultural hub. There are plenty of cafés, book shops, and galleries to be explored. In fact, there is so much stuff to do in Jabal Amman, you could spend a whole day here!

The main streets of Jabal Amman are Rainbow Street , Fawzi Malouf Street, Omar bin al-Khattab Street (also known as Mango Street) and Khirfan Street. The next point will be entirely dedicated to Rainbow street.

Fawzi Malouf Street is famous for its beautiful villas and Jordan River Designs which supports traditional crafts throughout Jordan. It is definitely one of the best things to do in Jordan .

Omar bin al-Khattab Street is home to the famous Mango House , built in reddish stone. The street is also famous for being home to the Jordan Royal Film Commission and hosting the popular BooksatCafé.

While being in Jabal Amman, you should make sure to have a drink or/and lunch in Wild Jordan Café Amman supporting ecotourism and local craft from all over Jordan.

It has a lovely view over Amman and you can stock up on souvenirs that support the local community such as baskets, tea, olive oil soaps, cushions and much more.

If you travel to Amman, visiting Jabal Amman will give you a different view on the Jordanian capital. For that reason it is one of the most fun things to do in Amman.

8. Rainbow Street

what to do in jordan amman, shopping on rainbow street

Rainbow street is probably the most famous street of Jabal Amman, if not of entire Amman. With its countless cafés, it’s a hotspot for socializing.

Being also one of the busiest streets in Amman, you’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to choosing your bar or café to hideaway.

Indeed, there seems to be a bar for everyone: tea lovers, hipster sit-ins, stylish espresso bars, … Some even come with their own DJ!

Rainbow street is one of the top places to visit in Amman and will convince you of the upbeat atmosphere of the capital.

Rainbow street is also famous for its color ful ice cream shops.

9. Indulge in Hummus and Falafel

what to do in jordan amman, a delicious plate of pita bread

If you’re wondering what to do in Amman, Jordan for foodies: you can’t really leave Amman without enjoying Jordanian mezze .

Mezze refers to a variety of food served in small portions. Similar to the concept of tapas in Spain, having mezze for lunch or dinner is an excellent opportunity to get to know a lot of traditional Jordanian food in a short time.

Going for mezze is one of the most popular activities in Amman.

The most famous foods that are part of every mezze are hummus and falafel. Both are so popular that they are even sold separately in the numerous food stalls of downtown Amman.

The most famous place to eat falafel and hummus in Amman is the legendary Hashem . Dating back to the 50s, this place is an institution and you should definitely book your table ahead. It is considered to be one of the best restaurants in Amman for hummus and falafel.

Or for the best falafel in Amman:

10. Enjoy a Shawarma in Amman

stuff to do in amman, eat a large shawarma wrap

After hummus and falafel, eating shawarma in Amman is one of the top things to do in Amman.

Similar to what is known as “Turkish pizza” or “pita gyros” in Western Europe, the shawarma is a pita filled with grilled, marinated meat that is shaved off in bits from a big skewer.

Some people add yogurt to it, some onions and tomatoes. Book here your food tour in Amman.

Hungry? So, where can you eat the best shawarma in Amman?

Even though I didn’t have the chance to visit this place by myself, I have heard that Shawarma Reem is the best place to have shawarma in Amman with queues standing on the street in order to get the best shawarma in town.

11. Get pampered in a spa

top things to do in amman jordan, treat yourself to a spa day

Having a spa experience in Jordan is a must! Indeed, Turkish baths, massages , and hammams have centuries of tradition in Jordan.

They are yet another sign of the cultural influences brought over by the Romans and other civilizations.

Whereas many travelers think you can only enjoy a wellness retreat at the Dead Sea, they’re wrong. Amman also boasts several great spa options.

In fact, a spa treatment is one of the best things to do in Amman, you will thank me later!

Some of the best Wellness retreats in Amman can be found within the hotels and can be booked with a day pass at the reception. Where to go in Amman for a spa experience:

  • W Amman: Not only is the rooftop bar one of the trendiest spots in Amman, but the hotel boasts one of the best massages and spa experiences in the Jordanian capital. You can choose your treatments on the extensive menu.
  • Fairmont Amman: With its Dead Sea pool, the Fairmont Amman offers its visitors one of the most emblematic spa experiences in Jordan. Indeed, the Dead Sea is well known for its health benefits. The large space boasts several pools and jacuzzi.
  • Al-Pasha Turkish Bath is the most famous hammam in Amman. Read here a detailed guide on how to visit a hammam including soaping, scrubbing, and olive oil massages.

12. King Abdullah Mosque

top tourist attractions in amman jordan, view of the king abdullah mosque

The King Abdullah Mosque is probably the most impressive mosque in Amman. The enormous, light-blue dome will definitely leave you in awe for some time.

We walked around for a couple of minutes to find the best angle to take a picture and it’s probably from Al Mamoun Street where you get the best one.

King Abdullah Mosque can host up to 7000 worshippers and the cupola has a diameter of 35 m! The mosque is definitely one of the best places to visit in Amman.

With such an impressive cupola, we thought that the inside must be breathtaking too. Well, it was not as spectacular as expected, but it was a nice experience to have a glimpse in one of the most important mosques in Jordan.

It is still one of the most beautiful attractions in Amman from the outside.

Even if you are not religious, visiting the King Abdullah Mosque is one of the top things to do in Amman, Jordan. The entrance hosts several souvenir shops where you can buy sand bottles, traditional keffiyehs (scarves), Dead Sea products and painted ostrich eggs.

Entrance costs 2 JOD (not included in Jordan Pass) and abayas (black or brown full-length dress) are available and mandatory to cover bare arms, legs or jeans. Shoes must be removed before entering the prayer hall.

13. Enjoy Amman at night

things to do in amman at night, view of the roman theatre at night

Unfortunately, I didn’t get to experience all the fun things to do in Amman at night as we only spent one night there, and we mostly indulged in traditional mezze.

Our hotel Amman Pasha Hotel had a lovely rooftop, sp we would have loved to enjoy a drink with views of the Roman theatre. However, it was way too cold!

But someone once told me that Amman is less about sightseeing but about “being” . It’s thus perfect to mingle with the locals and get a unique sense for the daily grind in Jordan , far away from the main tourist attractions in Amman.

However don’t get fooled by my experience since I have heard that Amman has a great nightlife . Clubs, bustling cafés, and lounges are just some of the best things to do in Amman at night!

14. Take a day trip to the Dead Sea

top things to do in amman jordan, view over the dead sea

Book here your day trip from Amman to Dead Sea

It might be cheating to recommend day trips as top things to do in Amman, but The Dead Sea is a must for every Jordan itinerary .

If you only have limited time, I recommend taking a day trip from Amman to the Dead Sea. For only a 1-2 h drive, you’ll get away from the hustle and bustle of the capital.

If you go by car, I highly recommend taking the road via Mount Nebo. It’s one of the most important religious sites in Jordan and it’s supposed to be the place where Moses saw the Promised Land for the first time.

The view is simply breathtaking … if it’s not too cloudy!

From here, you’ll drive down to the lowest point on earth, -423 m. The downhill journey to the Dead Sea was one of the most scenic parts of my trip to Jordan. Here and there, you’ll spot Bedouin tents, goats, camels, …

The Dead Sea is famous for its spas as the salty water and its mud has been known for centuries for its health benefits .

It’s important to know that most beaches are private, thus they belong to one of the numerous 4* or 5* hotels. So you pay for your stay or you pay 20-25 JOD to enter.

The shoreline of the Dead Sea is rocky and has no easy access to the water. And, I’m sure you’ll want to rinse off the salt after your “swim”.

When it comes to public beaches in the Dead Sea, you’ll want to visit Amman Beach which comes with showers. However, you’ll pay for mud (3 JOD) and towels! – Read more about where to stay in Jordan and the best hotels in Jordan .

If you have the time, I highly recommend staying at one of the luxurious hotels in the Dead Sea as it will only enhance the relaxing effect of your wellness experience in Jordan.

I stayed at the Hilton Dead Sea Resort & Spa***** and I loved the laid-back but still luxurious vibe of the hotel.

15. Take a day trip to Jerash

sightseeing in amman jordan, day trip to jerash

Free entrance to Roman ruins with Jordan Pass, 8 JOD

Book here your day trip from Amman to Jerash

Jerash was one of my favorite places to visit in Jordan , along with Petra and Wadi Rum. Jerash is often skipped by many travelers. However, I highly recommend visiting the Roman ruins of “Gerasa”.

They are probably the biggest and best maintained Roman ruins in the Middle East .

Located at 1 h drive from Amman, you can opt to either stay in Jerash or return in the evening. I only visited the Roman ruins , so I can’t really say whether the town of Jerash is worth a night over.

The ancient city is packed with columns, arches, theatres, a magnificent forum, several temples, a huge hippodrome and much more.

You can easily spend up to 4 hours (and more!) here. During the summer months, it can get very hot, so make sure to bring a hat, sunscreen, and water with you.

The most emblematic parts of the Jerash site are the following:

  • Hadrian’s Arch : built for the visit of Emperor Hadrian in 129 AD
  • The breathtaking hippodrome which could host up to 15.000 people
  • The Forum : built in limestone and surrounded by over 50 columns. It links the Cardo Maximus to Zeus temple
  • Zeus Temple: One of the most impressive temples. Next to the temple, you can see a broken column that was destroyed by the earthquake
  • South Theatre: One of my favorite places in Jerash! Hosting up to 5000 spectators, the theatre is perfectly maintained and the acoustic is excellent. Occasionally, a drummer and a bagpiper are playing in order to give an example of the perfect acoustic
  • Cardo Maximus: the main street of Jerash connects the Forum to the North Gate. The street is still paved with its original stones and is about 800 meters long. It takes you to the Nymphaeum. Over 500 columns in different sizes are set along the main street of the ancient Roman City.

You see that there are plenty of things to do in Jerash and I promise that you don’t need to be a history buff in order to enjoy the beauty of this ancient site. At some moments, I really felt like in a movie set of Gladiator or Ben Hur.

It’s really a UNIQUE opportunity to get to know what it was like to live in a Roman city thanks to the excellent condition of the Roman ruins. Jerash is thus one of the best day trips from Amman.

16. Visit a Spice Shop

things to do in amman, jordan, a spice shop

Anyone looking for stuff to do in Amman for foodies will want to head for a spice shop. When you see one, you will know why.

The spice shops in Jordan have what seems like hundreds of different spices on display, all different colors and flavors.

Here you will find everything: za’atar, mint, sumac, cardamom! If you tried some Jordanian food you loved and want to try making the stuff back home, I recommend buying some spices.

Spice shopping is one of the most cultural and fun things to do in Amman, Jordan. If you like photography, it is also a great opportunity for sightseeing in Amman because of all the colors! – Book here guided Amman tours

17. Enjoy a Jordanian Coffee in Amman

Coffee pot with view over the Petra area in Jordan, things to do in amman, jordanian coffee

If you are invited to drink coffee with a local, you must say yes!

There is a whole important culture around coffee in Jordan, especially to Bedouins, which has been around for hundreds of years. In Jordan, coffee is used to create dialogue and build friendships .

But if it is not possible to go to a local’s house, when you want a relaxing break from all the Amman sightseeing, go to a cafe to try out some Jordanian coffee.

Some of the best cafes in Amman are BooksatCafé, Seven Pennies and Rumi.

18. Visit Art Galleries

, jordan, amman, mosaic replica of antique Madaba map of Holy Land

There are lots of wonderful cafes, shops, and ancient ruins in Amman. But what to see in Amman, Jordan for art lovers? An art museum, of course!

There are several cool art museums in Amman, but maybe the most famous one in Darat Al Fun. This gallery is one of the oldest in the city and an essential part of Amman’s art history .

For a truly unique visit, you want Jacaranda Images. This museum is only about paper and even has an exhibit on Indigenous Australian art.

If you love art, treating yourself to a top notch art museum is one of the best things to do in Amman.

19. A Day Trip to Al Ma’wa Sanctuary

If you want to know what to visit in Amman to make a difference , I recommend the Al Ma’wa Sanctuary.

Al maw’s means ‘the shelter’ in Arabic, which is what it tries to do. This place is dedicated to protecting rescued wildlife. Because of its location, many animals are trafficked through Jordan, and if the animals are rescued, but unable to return home, they go to the Al Ma’wa Sanctuary.

The Al Ma’wa Sanctuary is home to a few bears and tigers, but most of the rescued animals are lions. Seeing and supporting these amazing creatures is one of the best things to do in Amman, Jordan.

Th area is also home to some of the best hiking trails in Jordan .

20. Enjoy Luxury Hotels in Amman

Relaxation living in luxury hotel, luxury hotels of amman, jordan

Great post. I'm back in Jordan after having lived here nearly my whole early adult life. Sadly, places like Shawarma Reem have fallen under new management and are not even remotely as good as it used to be (it broke my little heart, as it was THE place to help sop up all the booze after a night out over the weekend). Just thought it was worth mentioning so that people don't make their way there and have their hearts broken like I did last night.

Sunday 7th of April 2019

Oh yes I can totally relate. Petra is great, but there are so many other things to do in Jordan. Amman is not so touristy and it's great to see everyday life in a Jordanian city.

Welcome to Amman, the capital of Jordan

A History of Amman

Amman was originally built on seven hills but has since covered the span of nineteen hills, divided into 27 zones. Each zone is named after the hill (jabal) or valley (wadi) that it lies on. Every zone has its own character and is home to diverse architecture, culture, and history.

Amman sits on the eastern side of the Jordan River – geographically similar to Jerusalem which sits on the ‘Western Bank’ of the Jordan River – and shares a similar climate as well. The overall atmosphere is bustling and presents brilliant views as it sits between the Judean Desert, and the northern part of the Dead Sea .

Eastern Amman is the historic side of the city featuring the famous Citadel and Roman Amphitheater . ‘Downtown Amman’ or ‘Jabal Amman’ is now dwarfed by the west of the city as a commercial center, but still houses the city’s largest souqs, museums, and cultural sites.

Western Amman is the new part of Amman, a more western style experience which in parts resembles Dubai. As a result, this part of the city has a large number of westerners and expats, and western style malls, restaurants , and hotels .

Visiting Amman

Jordan is a traveler's dream introduction to the Middle East. Safe and friendly, the destination gets travelers up close to world wonders and immerses them in world-class hospitality . You'll feel right at home once you slip into the culture of this easygoing country.

UNESCO World Heritage Sites abound in Jordan. Marvel at fading frescos in the 1,300-year-old desert castle of Quseir Amra . Climb red sand dunes and stand in the shadows of weathered sandstone in Wadi Rum 's humbling desert landscape . And plan to spend at least two days exploring Jordan's crown jewel attraction: Petra . The jaw-dropping sites in the ancient Nabatean city will leave you stunned – and eager to see more.

But Jordan's not solely rooted in the past. Its hilly capital, Amman , brims with bustling restaurants and cafés, swanky shopping, and impressive art galleries. Then, there's the Dead Sea – where you can kick up your feet after days of sightseeing and dig in to some much-needed pampering at the many luxe waterfront resorts.

Plan your vacation to the Middle East and see the best places to visit with our list of the top tourist attractions in Jordan.

View of the monastery in Petra from a cave

Prepare to be amazed by Petra. One of the New7Wonders of the World , this attraction has wowed modern-day visitors since the long-lost city's rediscovery by Swiss explorer Jean Louis Burckhardt more than 200 years ago.

You'll need at least two days to hit all the highlights around Petra, which include more than 800 registered sites . But if you have more time, you won't be disappointed spending it here. Wandering around a city this ancient in such a well-preserved state is an experience like none other.

Petra wastes no time impressing tourists. Immediately after the entrance, you'll see mysterious Djinn Blocks , imposing stone monuments whose original purpose still remains unknown, followed by the Obelisk Tomb. It's just a sample of the incredible sites to come.

From here, you'll make your way through the Siq – the famous snaking canyon pathway flanked by tall walls. Look along the walls to see the remnants of historic channels that were used to supply Petra with water, as well as niches for sacred carvings known as baetyls . These artifacts hint that Petra may have been considered a holy city at one point in time. Keep your eye out for the weathered relief sculpture of camels being lead by two merchants, as well.

Finally, you'll reach the unmistakable Treasury (also known as Al-Khazneh). Showcased in nearly every travel guide book and social media post about Petra, this attraction's Hellenistic facade is one of the most enchanting places to visit in Jordan. Legend has it that the rock-hewn monument, which was built as the final resting place for Nabatean King Aretas IV, was the hiding place for an Egyptian pharaoh's treasure at the time of Moses.

When it comes to things to do in Petra after the Siq and the Treasury, it's a choose-your-own adventure. Check out dozens of tombs and houses on the Street of Facades , climb steep stairs for a great view at the High Place of Sacrifice, stand in awe at the Theater and stroll down the impressive Colonnaded Street.

If your feet aren't too sore yet, make your way up the roughly 850 rock-cut steps to the legendary Monastery. The impressive structure, tucked in the hills, is well worth the journey.

If you thought Petra was incredible during the day, wait until you see it after dark. Reserve tickets to the Petra By Night show to see the Siq and the Treasury lit by more than 1,500 flickering candles.

The Dead Sea in Jordan

Floating in the Dead Sea is a quintessential thing to do in Jordan. The lowest point on Earth accessible by road, this body of water is located at 418 meters below sea level. It practically glows an intense shade of aquamarine – a particularly striking sight next to salt-encrusted rock ledges and barren red mountains in the background. You can reach the attractions in the Dead Sea region in about an hour by car from Amman.

The Dead Sea is renowned for its mineral-rich water. Wellness devotees believe the water has healing properties for the skin. Don't plan to swim laps, though – the Dead Sea is so dense and salient that all you can really do is float atop the surface.

You can access the Dead Sea from a couple of entry points, including Amman Beach. Better yet, splurge on a stay at one of the plush spa resorts on the Dead Sea's northeast coast. They typically have private wading areas complete with buckets of Dead Sea mud. One bath with this red-brown sludge, and your skin will be softer than ever.

Hot tip: Avoid getting Dead Sea water in your eyes at all costs. The intense salinity (10 times saltier than the ocean!) stings worse than you can imagine.

Rock arch in Wadi Rum

Head to the southern region of Jordan, and you'll be treated to one of the most spectacular landscapes across the globe: Wadi Rum. Also known as the Valley of the Moon, this sandstone and granite rock valley is an otherworldly experience, with towering cliffs, massive dunes, swirling archways, and caverns. It served as the set for much of the 1962 film Lawrence of Arabia and was tagged a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2011.

Adventure lovers, eat your heart out: The Zalabia Bedouin, a cultural group that lives in the area, have transformed the Wadi Rum into an ecotourism playground. You can ride camels or spirited Arabian horses through the area, strap on a harness and go rock climbing up the sandstone mountains, hike through canyons , and kick up sand on ATV tours .

Ask your tour guide to take you to the Khazali Canyon , where you can see petroglyphs of humans and antelopes that may date as far back as the 8th century BC.

Consider spending the night at one of the luxurious " glamping " (glamorous camping) sites in Wadi Rum. With almost zero light pollution, the park offers incredible stargazing opportunities . No wonder visiting Wadi Rum is one of the top things to do in Jordan.

Corinithian columns in the Jerash ruins

Nothing feels more like traveling back in time than visiting the Jerash ruins. It's one of the world's best-preserved ancient Roman cities and features spectacular places to visit, from colonnaded avenues and temples to a massive sports arena that once had a seating capacity of 15,000 spectators.

Tourists kick off their sightseeing adventure of the Jerash ruins by walking through Hadrian's Arch . The roughly 11-meter-tall structure is magnificent, but even more impressive when you consider it was originally double the size.

If that wasn't enough to wow you, wait until you explore what's ahead. The Hippodrome , a sports field constructed around the 2nd century, once hosted chariot races as entertainment for thousands of onlookers. The ancient sport is brought back to life through daily re-enactments, featuring fighting gladiators and chariots racing laps.

Another highlight of the Jerash ruins is the Forum. The oval-shaped plaza is lined by still-standing columns that give the space a regal feel. Climb the steps of the nearby Temple of Zeus to get an even better view of the colonnaded site. And imagine the performances that took place on the ornate stage of the South Theater . Jerash seems to have a fascinating ruin for everyone – explore to see which site is your favorite.

Hot tip: There's almost no shade in this archeological site. Bring plenty of water, sunscreen, and a sunhat to keep yourself protected from the harsh rays.

Aqaba, Jordan

Think you can't have a seaside vacation in the hot, dry Middle East? Think again. Aqaba, a beach town on the southern tip of Jordan, treats tourists to holidays on the breathtaking coastline of the Red Sea .

Float, swim, snorkel, or dive – you can do it all from Aqaba. You can also get out on the turquoise water on one of the daily cruises offered by local hotels. Enhance your beach vacation in Jordan with a soak in one of the lovely hammams around the resort town.

When you're feeling peckish, dig into the local specialty of Aqaba: sayadieh , a dish of fish on flavorful rice with onion, tomato, and chili pepper.

Amman Roman ruins at dusk

You don't have to go all the way to Petra to see fantastic archeological sites in Jordan. In fact, the capital Amman (where you'll probably arrive from abroad) is home to a variety of fascinating ruins, many of which are within short walking distance from one another.

Head downtown to see one of the most celebrated ruins: the Amman Citadel. Archeologists have found artifacts around the Citadel that suggest it has been occupied since at least the Bronze Age. Here, you can see the few columns that remain of the amazing Temple of Hercules , a significant Roman structure that was never completed. Look for the stone sculpture of several fingers, which were once part of a Hercules statue that may have been more than 12 meters tall. It hints at just how majestic this attraction was during its height.

One of the top attractions in Amman for history buffs is the Roman Theater. The restored amphitheater, which seats 6,000 people, dates back to when Amman was a Roman-ruled city known as Philadelphia, nearly 2,000 years ago. The attraction is still full of life, hosting many events and welcoming locals and tourists alike.

Nearby, tourists can visit the Nymphaeum , a Roman fountain that was built around the same time as the theater, as well as the smaller 500-seat theater, the Odeon.

After getting your fill of the ruins, see the vibrant culture of modern-day Amman with a sightseeing trip along Rainbow Street. The popular promenade boasts atmospheric cafés, fantastic people-watching opportunities, and souvenir shops galore!

The Madaba Mosaic Map in St. George's Church, Madaba

While sightseeing in many destinations demands you look up, the opposite is true in the historic trading city of Madaba. The city is home to the "largest number of mosaics discovered in their original location in the world," many of which are located on the floors of churches and buildings around the city.

The relatively unassuming St. George's Church is home to one of the most noteworthy mosaics in Jordan: the Madaba Mosaic Map. The 6th-century map depicts the Holy Land during the Byzantine period, showcasing Biblical-era cartography. While some of the original two million tiles are missing, the remnants of the map still give you an excellent glimpse at what the Middle East looked like many centuries ago.

Visitors can see more mosaics at Madaba's two archeological parks. The open-air museum at Archaeological Park I contains a stunning geometric mosaic from the Church of the Virgin Mary – a site from the 6th century that was unearthed in someone's basement in 1887. This attraction also houses the oldest mosaic in Jordan , which dates back to the 1st century BC, as well as breathtaking carpet-like tile work of the four seasons and nature that was once in a Byzantine villa.

Tourists can see other impressive mosaics at Archaeological Park II, located in the ruins of a luxurious mansion from the early 6th century.

Wadi Mujib

Stretching from the Desert Highway around 70 kilometers to the Dead Sea , Wadi Mujib is Jordan's answer to America's Grand Canyon. The river canyon, which is four kilometers wide and one kilometer deep, offers nature lovers the chance to explore unique scenery and see a plethora of wildlife, including Egyptian vultures, Nubian ibex, striped hyena, and the Syrian wolf.

There's great hiking through the Wadi Mujib gorge , if you don't mind getting a little wet. You can also head to the Mujib Reserve Biosphere to soak in picturesque hot springs just an hour and a half away from Amman.

Quseir Amra, a desert castle in Jordan

Stretching from Amman to the border of Saudi Arabia, the Zarqa Governorate is home to a series of archeological sites known as the Desert Castles. These early Islamic buildings were erected by the Umayyads around the turn of the 7th century. Not quite castles in the traditional sense, the collection of structures consists of hunting lodges, forts, military citadels, bathhouses, and rest stops for caravans, among other types of buildings.

Rent a car and drive the Desert Castle Loop to visit the sites. You'll get the chance to see Quseir Amra , a squat building with interiors covered with beautiful frescoes; Quseir Hallabat , a Roman fort that features volcanic basalt rock and a well-preserved mosaic; Quseir Al-Kharanah, a castle-like structure that has dozens of rooms, but whose original function has been lost to history; and Azraq Castle , an ancient walled fort known as the place where T.E. Lawrence sought shelter in 1917-1918.

Wildflowers in Ajloun

Situated just 20 kilometers northwest of Jerash , Ajloun makes a worthwhile trip for tourists who want to see some of the best natural scenery in all of Jordan. Plan to spend a day hiking around the Ajloun Forest Reserve , a 13-square-kilometer expanse of pristine, open woodlands. In the spring, the area is blanketed by wildflowers, which makes for spectacular photo opportunities. Keep your eyes peeled for the crested porcupines and striped hyenas that live in the area.

Be sure to visit the Ajloun Castle on the summit of Mount Auf. It was built in the 12th century in the footprints of an even older Byzantine monastery to protect against the Crusader attacks. Its mountaintop location offers sweeping views of the Jordan Valley.

Serpentine Cross at the top of Mount Nebo

Mount Nebo is the crown jewel of Biblical sites in Jordan. According to the Old Testament, this mountain is said to be the place where Moses saw the Promised Land ahead of his death. Today, it's a spiritual attraction, with some of the country's best preserved mosaics from the 6th century, a Serpentine Cross , and the famous Moses Memorial Church.

Your ticket to the church includes access to Memorial Viewpoint, which has a small museum and views of the Dead Sea and Jerusalem on a clear day. But for more privacy with similar vistas, take a 100-meter walk on the road downhill from Mount Nebo and make a left toward the hilltop. It's the perfect spot for a picnic lunch.

Petra

The best time to visit Jordan is from March through June , during the country's beautiful spring season. It's considered high season in the destination, as throngs of tourists flock to Amman, Petra, and the Dead Sea to take advantage of spring's warm days and breezy nights.

The weather and climate of Jordan can vary considerably depending on where you are. In Amman , towards the north, tourists can expect perfect weather for sightseeing in the spring . It's still a bit chilly in March, with low temperatures in Amman dropping to an average of six degrees Celsius and highs typically hitting 17 degrees Celsius. Bring a light jacket if you plan to go sightseeing at Amman's incredible archeological attractions, like the Amman Citadel and the Roman Theater.

The relatively temperate spring weather makes it a great time of year for tourists to tackle parts of the Jordan Trail. The long-distance hiking trail stretches from Umm Qais to Aqaba for a whopping 675 kilometers. Hikers can trek through some 75 villages and towns on the trail, experience some of the country's best desert sightseeing, explore ancient ruins, and make stops at major attractions (including Petra ). While the entire trail takes about 40 days to hike, you can tackle certain segments over the course of a few days.

The capital warms up throughout the spring, and by June, the temperature in Amman ranges from 17 degrees Celsius at night to 30 degrees Celsius during the day. While you might get the occasional shower in March or April, it hardly rains in Amman from May through October . Take advantage of the sunshine to explore Rainbow Street and enjoy the city's lovely al fresco falafel joints.

Jordan also has another sightseeing highlight during the spring season: flowers. Head to the northern hills to see the Earth carpeted by brightly colored w ildflowers, and drive along the King's Highway for a glimpse of Jordan's national flower, the Black Iris, blooming along the roadside. Who knew the landscape of the Middle East could be this vibrant?

The best time to visit Jordan's biggest attraction – Petra – is also in the spring . It's typically a couple of degrees warmer than Amman. While the cool early spring temperatures make sightseeing in Petra more pleasant in Mach and April, tourists can enjoy 14 hours of daylight in June. The extra light gives you lots of time to venture beyond the Siq and Treasury and see some of Petra's other interesting attractions, like the Colonnaded Street and the High Place of Sacrifice. Ambitious (and fast-walking) tourists may even have time to climb the 850 rock-cut steps to reach the Monastery , one of Petra's most impressive structures, before the sun sets.

Sand dunes at Wadi Rum

If you want to camp out in Wadi Rum , or simply enjoy the Valley of the Moon's amazing scenery and ancient petroglyphs on a day trip, plan to visit in early spring. The temperatures in March and April range from lows of 8 degrees Celsius to highs of 29 degrees Celsius . If you had to pick between the two months to visit Wadi Rum, go for May – it has a lower chance of precipitation that might otherwise rain out your adventures.

However, if you're drawn to the Red Sea and the beach town of Aqaba, you may want to visit earlier in the season, such as March or the beginning of April. You can expect temperatures to range from 14 to 18 degrees Celsius on the low end to highs of 27 to 31 degrees Celsius during this time of year.

By May, southern Jordan heats up to scorching temperatures – highs climb to an average of 36 degrees Celsius that month, and it regularly hits 40 degrees Celsius by July and August. It rarely rains in Aqaba, so if you visit in early spring, you can enjoy pristine beach weather and ample sunshine for snorkeling, swimming, and diving.

If you're in Jordan in early summer, you can experience one of the country's official public holidays, King Abdullah's Coronation Anniversary , on June 9. Events occur all over the country to commemorate the rise of the king and celebrate Jordan as a nation.
