ASK Vanessa

Should I Dress for Vacation Like a Travel Influencer?

A reader wonders whether comfort or fashion should come first.

fashion travel magazine

By Vanessa Friedman

I love to travel and am fascinated by the Instagram travel influencers in their colorful dresses, variety of hats and delightful accessories, against the backgrounds of gorgeous cities and landscapes. But I could not possibly hike to the top of the mountain in a long white billowy dress, or explore Paris in anything less than sensible sneakers, could I? What is this about, and how are regular people supposed to balance convenience with fashion? — Olenka, Chicago

There is so much to unpack in this question: the way social media has skewed our perceptions of self, the effect of influencer marketing and what to wear when you are seeing the world. Where to start?

Maybe with the question: What are you really looking for when you travel? And what exactly are you “sharing” when you post?

If the answer is “a great picture to show all my friends in order to demonstrate the glamour and excitement of my life and make them jealous” (which, to be fair, is what a lot of Instagram is about), then you may be looking in the wrong place. That’s not so much about learning firsthand about other cultures and landscapes via travel, and more about social status and one-upsmanship.

For travel influencers, as with all online influencers, of course, it’s also about a career. The person in the picture is pushing an image of their fabulous life to make you want to be them, and to suggest that it can really happen if you buy the hotel/spa package they are theoretically enjoying. And they are often paid to do that. The more tempting influencers can make a trip look, and the more followers they convince, the more money they can potentially make.

But if you are traveling to experience a different part of the world, to see it and smell it and taste it for yourself, then the picture is just an aide-mémoire. How it is art-directed for others is the least of the matter.

Indeed, when I asked Eva Chen, Instagram’s vice president for fashion and shopping partnerships, about it, she emailed back: “I travel a fair amount, and I follow nearly 1,500 accounts on Instagram. And I am here to tell you that you should not feel like you should travel like those influencers or live up to any standard of travel fashion other than your own.”

Once you start thinking like that, the most important consideration is not how trendy or fabulous a garment is, or how good it will look in a picture, but how effectively it facilitates your experience. What you wear should make your life easier, not more complicated. Garments that need dry cleaning and ironing to be presentable are probably not a good idea. Ditto anything that risks a broken ankle.

According to Ms. Chen: “My personal hacks for travel are: find a pair of sneakers that are comfortable and utilitarian (my preferred styles are the Nike Cortez or dad-worthy New Balances). A simple cotton shift dress in black or charcoal hides a multiple of wrinkles and can be dressed up or dressed down. And big sunglasses (think Audrey) have a similar effect.”

Also, she said, you can always make a virtue out of your refusal to be a travel influencer lemming by sharing “ your version of what a travel influencer’s wardrobe can be in the places you frequent.” In other words, change the rules!

After all, in the end, what makes the best picture is the joy of discovery. It reads through any lens.

step 1:  PLANNING

fashion travel magazine

Before you even think about buying luggage and other travel gear, you need to think about what you plan to bring on this trip. The first step in the process is to research your destination.

One of our goals is to determine the best clothing for every destination. Not one style works for everything. We want to make sure you look stylishly appropriate everywhere you go.

WHAT TO WEAR: Browse through our entire section dedicated to what to wear in specific destinations so you know exactly the type of clothing you need (and don’t need) for your trip. Click here .

PACKING LISTS: Choose one of our packing lists for specific advice on destinations around the world:

  • North America
  • South America
  • South Pacific

step 2:  CLOTHING

fashion travel magazine

Once you’ve done your research, it’s time to learn the art of creating a capsule wardrobe. Without this, you’ll find it challenging to travel carry-on only and stop overpacking.

TRAVEL CAPSULE WARDROBE EXAMPLES:  Choose from summer or winter examples featuring six to fifteen items per set. You won’t believe how many outfits you can make with just ten pieces of clothing! Click here .

TRAVEL WARDROBE ESSENTIALS E-BOOK: This free guide shows you exactly how to choose the right clothing for travel.  Click here .

TRAVEL CLOTHING CATEGORY:  Browse all our  travel clothing  articles or look for specific clothing sections below:

  • Travel Shirts and Tops
  • Travel Sweater and Jackets
  • Travel Pants
  • Travel Dresses
  • Travel Accessories
  • Travel Underwear
  • Plus Size Travel Clothing

step 3:  SHOES

fashion travel magazine

Choosing the right shoes for a trip is challenging but it’s not impossible. The main thing to remember is that comfort is king – you can’t enjoy your trip to the fullest extent if you’re in pain and can’t walk.

While the ideal shoes will be both comfortable and fashionable, style will have to take a back seat if it means you can’t wear a pair of shoes for hours at a time.

TRAVEL SHOES CATEGORY: We have an entire category  dedicated to shoes because we love shoes and its really hard to find stylish yet comfortable shoes. Here are some of the most popular posts:

  • Cute and Comfortable Sightseeing Shoes
  • Best Orthopedic Shoes for Women
  • Best White Sneakers for Women
  • Cute and Comfortable Sandals for Travel

step 4:  TOILETRIES

fashion travel magazine

For useful tips such as downsizing toiletries and choosing the best travel makeup, read our  Ultimate Guide to Packing Toiletries . It includes a free printable checklist!

The biggest mistake travelers make with toiletries is not considering how much product they actually use. There are five key steps when it comes to downsizing your toiletries properly for a trip:

FIND COMBINATION ITEMS:  You can find two-in-one shampoos and conditioners, body cleanser that can double as shave gel, a foldable brush with a mirror attached on the handle, and multi-use makeup products.

PURCHASE EMPTY CONTAINERS: Get various shapes and sizes and DO NOT default to choosing “travel size 100ml or 3oz” options. These are the  best travel containers .

STICK TO THE BASICS: Simplify your skincare and pampering routine and bring a  capsule makeup collection . It’s only temporary.

OPT FOR SOLID TOILETRIES: Replace liquid beauty products with solids.   While  solid toiletries  may not help you downsize they will help you meet the carryon  3-1-1 liquids rule .

CHOOSE TRAVEL FRIENDLY HAIR TOOLS:  These are the best dual voltage travel-friendly hair dryers , flat irons , hair dryer brush and curling iron .

CHOOSE THE RIGHT TOILETRY BAG: These are the  best toiletry bags  and these are the  best  hanging  toiletry bags .

step 5:  LUGGAGE

fashion travel magazine

So the hard part’s out of the way; after much turmoil you’ve finally figured out exactly what to wear on your trip – now it’s time to get packing! Which luggage will work best for you?

CHOOSE YOUR LUGGAGE: If you don’t already own a suitcase, make your life easy and choose one wisely. Browse all our  travel luggage articles  or look for specific luggage recommendations all tried and tested by our readers:

There are times when  backpacks are better than wheeled bags . If you’re going on an adventurous trip, learn  how to choose the best travel backpack .

USE PACKING ORGANIZERS:  Do you want to know the ultimate tool to travel in a carryon?  PACKING CUBES ! They changed everything for me and thousands of other travelers. See my packing tutorial  on how to use them! Trust me, they are a must!

Travel + Leisure / Madison Woiten

From the revival of ballet flats to the comfortable (and easy-to-style) allure of cargo pants , this year’s fall trends are here, and have been seen all over the runways and the fashionable streets of Soho and beyond. If you’re looking for a travel wardrobe refresher, you’re in luck because many of these trends also happen to consist of stylish and functional garments that ensure that you'll always look put-together without sacrificing comfort.

Living in New York City, I’ve been immersed in these fashion trends since the start of the season. Denim skirts have taken over my TikTok, and I’ve seen more knee-high boots on the street than I can count. Bold statement pieces are in, and they also happen to be an easy way to look fabulous without spending too much time on your look. I’ve incorporated a lot of these styles into my own wardrobe, and the best part is that many of these looks are timeless and can seamlessly fit into any closet — so they'll be stylish investments that you'll be able to wear long after the last leaf falls.

As a travel writer with a keen interest in fashion and effortless styling, I've taken it upon myself to curate a list of the biggest trends this season and where to find them. Lucky for you (and me), many of these items are on sale, with prices starting at just $12, and options span from cozy sets to eye-catching statement pieces and more. So why wait? Keep scrolling to discover the hottest additions for your wardrobe.

Cargo Pants

American Eagle

I’m always on the lookout for functional-yet-stylish garments. So when I saw that cargo pants had become this season’s latest go-to, I headed straight to American Eagle to try out a pair for myself, specifically the Cargo Straight Pants (which are currently on sale for $54). To my delight, I found these pants to be incredibly comfortable, versatile, and easy to pair with almost every top in my closet. Even better, these bottoms boast multiple spacious pockets that fit all of my personal belongings like my phone, keys, and wallet.

If you’re interested in adding a pair of these trendy pants to your wardrobe, there are plenty of options out there, including Amazon’s best-selling pair , the Dickies Women’s Cuffed Cargo Pants (which are currently in my cart) and the Madewell Garment-Dyed Low-Slung Straight Cargo Pants , which are on sale for $60.

  • American Eagle Cargo Straight Pants , $36 (originally $60)
  • Dickies Women’s Cuffed Cargo Pants , $65
  • Lepunuo High-Waisted Cargo Pants , $30 (originally $40)
  • BP Double Pocket Cargo Pants , $49 (originally $69)
  • Asos Design Low Rise Wide-Leg Cargo Pants , $52
  • Madewell Garment-Dyed Low-Slung Straight Cargo Pants , $60 (originally $98)

If there's one trend that you should definitely embrace, it's the surge of cozy loungewear. Several retailers are embracing comfort with soft-knit sets , ultra-cozy bottoms, and more. I’m personally sporting my Aerie Gotta Jet High-Waisted Skater Pants with my Aerie Gotta Jet High Polo Sweater to the airport and beyond. Additionally, you can find me frequently lounging around in my TravisMathew Cloud French Terry Hoodie . But, there are so many other great cozy and comfortable travel-friendly loungewear pieces out there, like the Viottiset Sweater Set , an entire one-and-done outfit that’s on sale for just $54.

  • Aerie Gotta Jet High-Waisted Skater Pants , $24 (originally $60)
  • Aerie Gotta Jet High Polo Sweater , $30 (originally $50)
  • TravisMathew Cloud French Terry Hoodie , $150
  • Viottiset Sweater Set , $54 (originally $70)
  • Aloodor Women’s Sweatsuit , $32 (originally $39)
  • Lillusory Women’s Two-Piece Oversized Sweater Set , $52
  • Free People Around Town Sweater Set , $128

Red Hot Everything

If you loved the aesthetic of Tomato Girl Summer as much as I did, I’m happy to report that bright red is here to stay, and it's a crucial pillar of fall fashion. We’re talking cherry red leather jackets , bright red boots , eye-catching fiery sweaters , and more. And it doesn’t just stop at garments, feel free to accessorize with the buzzy color, too (think: red accent hats and cozy scarves). In fact, fashion-forward retailers like Free People have entire storefronts dedicated to this bold trend.

This style is one of the easier ones to replicate and incorporate into your wardrobe. And with its emphasis on stunning statement pieces, wearing such a fun and seamless way to stay looking put-together without a second thought. These pieces are begging for a spot in your closet:

  • Levi’s Women’s Faux Leather Motocross Racer Jacket , $90
  • Amazon Essentials Long-Sleeve Puffer Jacket , $49
  • Naturalizer Edit 27 Boots , $156 (originally $190)
  • Everlane Felted Merino Half-Zip Sweater , $148
  • Francesca’s Avery Balloon Sleeve Turtleneck Sweater , $34 (originally $56)
  • Free People Vancouver Mockneck Sweater , $100 (originally $138)
  • Wander Agio Women’s Scarf , $12
  • Anrabess Women’s Oversized Quarter Zipper Collar , $43
  • The Drop Women’s Addison Soft Baguette Bag , $40
  • Pacsun Forumla 1 Hungary Cropped T-Shirt , $22 (originally $26)

Bright Statement Pieces

  • If red isn't your color, no worries: bold, statement-making pieces are having a moment in general. This eye-catching trend has taken over the runways, notably with the metallic-heavy pieces from Coach's Shine Collection and shiny statements garments like the Good American Crystal Mini Dress . The color experts at Pantone also predicted that bright yellows, vivid greens, vibrant magentas, and other lively hues will be prevalent this fall. If you’re looking for ways to add this trend into your suitcase, you’re in luck because incorporating singular statement pieces is such a low-effort, high-reward styling technique to keep all eyes on you, no matter where you go.

From bold shoes like the SeaVees Bolinas Off Shore Waterproof Rain Boots to bright green cardigans , consider adding a few statement pieces to your collection for easy wearing that ensures you always look great.

  • Coach Leah Loafers In Silver Metallic , $225
  • Mou Cabin Cozy Slippers , $145
  • Sam Edelman Magenta Wool Blend Notch Collar Coat, $150 (originally $220)
  • Xxxiticat Women’s Sleeveless Satin Gold Dress , $24 (originally $40)
  • SeaVees Bolinas Off Shore Waterproof Rain Boots , $110
  • Chaus Metallic Mesh Palazzo Pants , $69
  • Good American Crystal Mini Dress , $225
  • Grace Karin Women’s Long Sleeve Cardigan , $30 (originally $39)

Ballet Flats

This season is all about the revival of footwear classics, starting with ballet flats. And after one stroll in the West Village, it's clear that the trend is already resonating with New Yorkers. Tourists and locals are pulling their trusty flats out of the back of their closets, but if you’re looking to replicate this trend in a fresh and more modern way, I've got you covered; these picks are shopper-loved for their comfortable build and cute style.

  • Birdies The Crane Ballet Flats , $150
  • Sonora SoftWalk Flats , $59 (originally $100)
  • Clarks Talene Ave Flats , $57 (originally $95)
  • Cole Haan Ballet Flats , $110 (originally $150)
  • Frank Mully Women’s Ballet Flats , $39 (originally $50)
  • Dr. Scholl’s Women’s Slip-On Georgie Ballet Flats , $46 (originally $60)

Maxi Denim Skirts

One of the more surprising, but welcomed, trends this season is denim maxi skirts. In fact, I’ve even been embracing the 2000s staple by sporting the Pacsun Medium Indigo Low-Rise Denim Maxi Skirt all over the city (it looks great with T-shirts, sweaters, vests, and more). I’m a huge fan of this easy-to-style trend, and right now, denim skirts are among the first garments that I look for when preparing for a trip. Here are some top-rated denim maxi skirts from around the web, along with a few other non-denim maxi skirt styles (that are equally in-season).

  • Pacsun Medium Indigo Low-Rise Denim Maxi Skirt , $42 (originally $60)
  • Wash Lab Denim Pieced Denim Maxi Skirt , $128
  • Topshop Denim Maxi Skirt , $82
  • Skirt BL Women’s Maxi Pencil Jean Skirt , $40
  • Nashalyly Women’s Chiffon Elastic High-Waisted Skirt , $30 (originally $37)
  • Ebossy Women’s High-Waisted Pleated Chiffon Skirt , $27

Knee-High Boots

First introduced in the 1960s, Frye Campus Boots were the hottest shoes on the market. And recently, this retro-yet-timeless style has made a triumphant return in the fashion scene, causing them to basically fly off the virtual shelves. They’ve been impossible to find in stock, but with some consistent checking (and rechecking), I saw that the brand restocked their most popular Campus 14L Boots style. These knee-high boots, although a bit of an investment, are built to last for years and transcend fleeting fashion trends. However, if you're seeking more budget-friendly alternatives that capture the same trend, styles like the Sam Edelman Drina Knee-High Boots (that are nearly $100 off right now) and the on-sale Vespose Women’s 49 Riding Boots are ready to be added to your collection.

  • Frye Campus 14L Boots , $498
  • Dolce Vita Knee-High Boots , $169 (originally $260)
  • Sam Edelman Drina Knee-High Boots , $152 (originally $250)
  • Vespose Women’s 49 Riding Boots , $55 (originally $98)
  • Steve Madden Annya Knee-High Boots , $110 (originally $200)
  • DuoBoots Adie Knee High Boots in Black Suede , $325

Future fashion cities: Paris to overtake New York?

By Annachiara Biondi

Image may contain Plot

Paris is expected to overtake New York to become the number one city for relevance and potential in the global fashion industry by 2025, according to IFDAQ Global Cities Consumer IPX (Index). The likelihood is that London will rise to third place, surpassing Milan, the research says.

IFDAQ Global Cities Consumer IPX (Index), exclusive to Vogue Business , evaluates global cities according to four dynamic-weighted key factors, including general economy, fashion economic performance, market capitalisation and industry influence. These factors take into account infrastructure, GDP, brand presence, wealth, consumption power and creative power.

Paris is likely to reap the benefits of Brexit, including faster European Union integration and less competition from London, according to Frédéric Godart, co-CEO of IFDAQ and associate professor of organisational behaviour at INSEAD. “The competition with London was fierce, but now that London is out, Paris is going to be the de facto economic capital of the EU,” he says. New York is losing traction economically, partly because of the US-China trade war, says IFDAQ co-CEO Daryl de Jorí.

A further boost for Paris, defining it as the world centre of luxury, is the ever-increasing dominance of Paris-based conglomerates LVMH and Kering. Godart makes the comparison with Silicon Valley’s dominance of technology. “It's a classical capitalist concentration dynamic, a clustering effect.”

The French capital’s central role seems assured. “Paris has the allure, the glamour and is the home base for two huge influential fashion groups that anchors it,” says Julie Gilhart, industry veteran and chief development officer of Tomorrow Consulting. “In my fashion history I’ve seen Milan, London and New York going up and down. The only thing that remains pretty solid is Paris.”

The artist is not present: What's left for brands after the founder departs?

By José Criales-Unzueta

Does France’s anti-fast fashion bill have legs?

By Jessica Binns

In 2019, the world’s 10 largest luxury companies, led by LVMH and Kering, increased their share of industry revenue , accounting for 51 per cent of all sales by the top 100 companies. The Covid-19 pandemic has since accelerated luxury polarisation, with high-performing companies weathering the storm while smaller players struggled. Analysts say these conditions provide fertile grounds for M&A , with market consolidation to the benefit of the biggest players. “Paris is still taking a lot of advantage from its last 20 years of mergers,” says de Jorí. Since 2000, LVMH and Kering between them have acquired or bought stakes in more than 10 leading luxury brands.

London versus Milan

The rise of London over Milan is a less straightforward story and might reflect a progressive weakening of Milan’s status rather than a strengthening of London’s role, says Godart. While both cities are facing economic uncertainties ranging from the impact of Brexit to the economic hit of the Covid-19 pandemic, London has a more dynamic economy. “For London, it’s much more of a temporary [challenging economic] state and we believe it will soon recover, while Milan never really recovered from the economic crisis of 2008,” says de Jorí. “The Italian economy is too weak to build more traction and interest from brands.”

By Christina Binkley

The Italian fashion industry and the country’s wealth are also distributed among different cities, including Florence, Venice and Rome, rather than concentrated in one place, as in London and in Paris. Godart says that the “concentration effect” is absolutely critical for the relevance of cities such as Paris, London, Tokyo and Moscow. Besides Italy, Spain, Germany and China are all examples of countries where power is shared between two or more cities.

David Gilbert, professor of urban and historical geography at Royal Holloway, University of London, who has researched the geographies of fashion, says London appears the most vulnerable of the four capitals because it derives its status not from the luxury brands based there but from its reputation as a source of edginess and innovation. “London, more than the others, depends on that churn of ideas. You can imagine another city doing the same things that London does in terms of creativity, innovation and avant-garde,” he says. Post-Brexit, rising prices and economic uncertainties could well squeeze independent designers out of the city.

The role of fashion weeks

In the IFDAQ Index, Paris, New York, London and Milan will maintain their dominance until at least 2030. But the Index predicts a gradual decrease in importance as other cities step up their influence — including Tokyo, Los Angeles, Shanghai and Moscow.

A key factor is the likely continuing global impact of the four cities’ fashion weeks, says Godart. These will endure despite current industry debates over the fashion calendar and the future of fashion weeks . “To some extent they will evolve: there will be more diversity and other fashion capitals, but you don’t change institutions in one year,” Godart says. He notes that the four fashion capitals retain the necessary infrastructure and organisational experience — as well as the luxury brands — to trigger the most interest on a global scale.

Image may contain Plot

Gilbert says that in the early 2000s it was commonly anticipated that the future fashion order would shift towards cities such as Shanghai, Mumbai or São Paulo. Instead, the traditional order has reasserted itself over the past 20 years. “Those fashion capitals are locked in symbolically in a way that almost becomes self-fulfilling,” he says. “As long as the global elite looks at those places as markets with elite status, that stays in place.”

Gilhart is wary of making long-term predictions, particularly after the Covid-19 pandemic has led to industry reevaluation of the structure and meaning of fashion weeks. “Covid has made us rethink everything, including what is valid about fashion week and what it’s not,” she says,

She adds that cities that might seem less relevant now could become important again by developing new formats or launching new trends. Shanghai is well positioned to become a force thanks to an abundance of talent and creativity. Launched in 2001, Shanghai Fashion Week has steadily increased its relevance on the global fashion calendar, attracting international buyers with shows that mix new local talents and international brands eager to tap into the Chinese market. The showcase was the first to return as a largely physical event in October 2020 after the Covid-19 pandemic disrupted the international show calendar. “We will see a time when New York, London, Milan, Paris and Shanghai will be equally as relevant,” Gilhart predicts.

Moscow: City to watch

Moscow may be a significant city to watch. It is forecast to grow in importance for the fashion industry, surpassing Shanghai in 2026, according to the IFDAQ Global Cities Consumer IPX (Index). De Jorí says the core reasons why Shanghai will plateau in the Index include a decrease in Chinese consumer purchasing power as population growth slows as well as likely slower growth patterns both in salaries and in GDP.

The concentration of wealth and consumption in Moscow will boost its rise in prominence. In Russia, the capital city accounts for more than 70 per cent of luxury consumption, contrasting with China where luxury consumption and wealth are spread among many first-tier cities. Anna Lebsak-Kleimans, CEO of Fashion Consulting Group Russia, adds that luxury brands rarely open stores beyond three cities in Russia — Moscow, Saint Petersburg and Sochi.

European and American luxury brands dominate the Russian luxury sector. Moscow has hosted its own fashion week, Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Russia, since 2000, but local fashion businesses remain small and mostly focused on the local market, says Lebsak-Kleimans. But she notes that segments of the local fashion market, such as modest wear and eco-friendly underwear, have developed fast in the last six years, boosted by direct-to-consumer e-commerce and more government support for local industries after US sanctions imposed in 2014.

A Timeline of Kate Middleton's Abdominal Surgery and Recovery

Here's everything Kensington Palace has said about the Princess of Wales's health in recent weeks.

the duke and duchess of cambridge attend shout's crisis volunteer celebration event

But in March, they shared a significant update: Kate is being treated for cancer.

Here, T&C takes a look back on all the statements Kensington Palace has made about the Princess of Wales, in a complete timeline of her health news:

December 25, 2023: Kate attends Christmas services at Sandringham with the royal family.

the british royal family attend the christmas morning service

As is annual tradition for the royal family, Kate appeared with her family on Christmas day, as they walked to church at Sandringham. This appearance became notable only later, as it marks the last time the Princess made a public appearance before her surgery.

January 16: Kate undergoes planned abdominal surgery at the London Clinic.

In mid-January, the Princess of Wales underwent planned abdominal surgery at the London Clinic. News of the surgery was not made public until the following day.

January 17: Kensington Palace releases their first statement on Kate's health.

police officers stand outside the private london clinic as

"Her Royal Highness The Princess of Wales was admitted to The London Clinic yesterday for planned abdominal surgery," Kensington Palace said in a shocking statement . "The surgery was successful and it is expected that she will remain in hospital for ten to fourteen days, before returning home to continue her recovery. Based on the current medical advice, she is unlikely to return to public duties until after Easter."

The Palace continued, "The Princess of Wales appreciates the interest this statement will generate. She hopes that the public will understand her desire to maintain as much normality for her children as possible; and her wish that her personal medical information remains private. Kensington Palace will, therefore, only provide updates on Her Royal Highness’ progress when there is significant new information to share. The Princess of Wales wishes to apologise to all those concerned for the fact that she has to postpone her upcoming engagements. She looks forward to reinstating as many as possible, as soon as possible."

It is understood her surgery was not cancerous, but no other details were provided on the Princess's health conditions.

January 18: William visits Kate at the hospital.

the princess of wales recovers in the london clinic after successful abdominal surgery

Prince William was photographed driving from the London Clinic, where he visited his wife as she recuperated from surgery; it was the only time the Prince of Wales was pictured at the hospital during her entire two-week stay. Meanwhile, in the aftermath of her surgery, William postponed his public engagements to be by his wife's side.

January 26: King Charles visits Kate at the hospital.

On January 26, King Charles was admitted to the London Clinic for treatment for a benign enlarged prostate . Before his admittance, he visited the Princess of Wales, who was still recuperating from her surgery in the London Clinic.

A week later, Buckingham Palace announced the King has cancer , saying, "During The King’s recent hospital procedure for benign prostate enlargement, a separate issue of concern was noted. Subsequent diagnostic tests have identified a form of cancer."

January 29: Kate is discharged from hospital.

king charles iii leaves hospital after treatment for enlarged prostate

On the same day King Charles was discharged from the hospital, the Princess of Wales was also discharged . While Charles was pictured smiling and waving as he left (above), Kate was not seen as she left the London Clinic.

"The Princess of Wales has returned home to Windsor to continue her recovery from surgery. She is making good progress," Kensington Palace said in a statement . "The Prince and Princess wish to say a huge thank you to the entire team at The London Clinic, especially the dedicated nursing staff, for the care they have provided. The Wales family continues to be grateful for the well wishes they have received from around the world."

As of January 29, Kate is said to be recuperating at home at Adelaide Cottage in Windsor.

February 7: Prince William returns to public duties, and carries out a day of engagements.

the prince of wales attends london's air ambulance charity gala dinner

A bit over a week following Kate's discharge from the hospital, Prince William returned to public engagements , carrying out an investiture and attending a gala dinner for London's air ambulance charity .

At the investiture, William revealed that Kate has two "amazing and kind" nurses caring for her, and at the gala dinner, he said, "I'd like to take this opportunity to say thank you, also, for the kind messages of support for Catherine and for my father, especially in recent days. It means a great deal to us all."

February 27: Kensington Palace gives a brief update on Kate's health.

When Kensington Palace shared that Prince William had to miss King Constantine's memorial service due to a "personal matter," they gave a brief health update on Kate , saying she "continues to be doing well."

February 29: Kensington Palace emphasizes that there will be no regular updates on Kate's health.

In response to rampant online speculation about the Princess , a spokesperson said , "Kensington Palace made it clear in January the timelines of the Princess' recovery and we'd only be providing significant updates. That guidance stands." The spokesperson reiterated that Kate is "doing well."

March 4: Kate is spotted in public for the first time.

In the first photographs of the Princess of Wales since December, she was pictured in the passenger seat of an car driven by her mom, Carole Middleton , near Windsor Castle. The unauthorized paparazzi photos were obtained by TMZ. ( Read more here. )

March 10: Kensington Palace shares first official photo of Kate following her surgery.

In honor of Mother's Day in the UK, Kensington Palace released a new photo of Kate , which was taken by Prince William and shows the Princess surrounded by her three children. The image was accompanied by a brief message from Kate, thanking the public for their continued support.

a group of people posing for the camera

Soon after the image was released, the photograph was recalled by photo agencies , following speculation it had been photoshopped. Photo agencies citied their reason for recall as an "editorial issue" and "post-publication review."

March 11: The Palace shares an apology from Kate over the edited photo.

In response to the photo editing drama, Kensington Palace shared a personal apology from Kate Middleton , who wrote, "Like many amateur photographers, I do occasionally experiment with editing. I wanted to express my apologies for any confusion the family photograph we shared yesterday caused. I hope everyone celebrating had a very happy Mother's Day." The Palace has not shared the original photograph.

A few hours later, Kate was pictured in a car with Prince William leaving Windsor Castle . She was heading to a private appointment, while William appeared at Commonwealth Day Service at Windsor Castle.

March 16: Kate is spotted out and about in Windsor.

Locals spotted the Princess of Wales at what is reportedly her favorite farm shop, according to the Sun . Onlookers said she looked "happy, relaxed and healthy." A witness told the tabloid, "After all the rumours that had been going round I was stunned to see them there. Kate was out shopping with William and she looked happy and she looked well. The kids weren’t with them but it's such a good sign she was healthy enough to pop down to the shops." Two days later, on March 18, the outlet published photos and videos of the outing .

March 20: An inquiry is opened into London Clinic staff who reportedly tried to access Kate's medical records.

An inquiry has been opened into hospital staff who reportedly attempted to access the medical records of the Princess of Wales. The London Clinic said in a statement, "We have systems in place to monitor management of patient information and, in the case of any breach, all appropriate investigatory, regulatory and disciplinary steps will be taken. There is no place at our hospital for those who intentionally breach the trust of any of our patients or colleagues."

March 22: Kate has cancer, Kensington Palace announces.

preview for Kate Middleton Speaks Out About Her Cancer Diagnosis

Over two months after her surgery, the Palace announced the Princess has been diagnosed with cancer and is receiving chemotherapy.

Kate also released a personal video message , saying it has been an "incredibly tough few months" and asking for privacy. "We hope that you will understand that, as a family, we now need some time, space and privacy while I complete my treatment. My work has always brought me a deep sense of joy and I look forward to being back when I am able, but for now I must focus on making a full recovery."

March 23: The Prince and Princess of Wales are "enormously touched" by well wishes.

In Prince William and Kate's first joint message since revealing Kate's cancer diagnosis, a Kensington Palace spokesperson said, "The Prince and Princess are both enormously touched by the kind messages from people here in the UK, across the Commonwealth and around the world in response to Her Royal Highness' message. They are extremely moved by the public's warmth and support and are grateful for the understanding of their request for privacy at this time."

We'll update this as more news becomes available about Kate Middleton's health and recovery.

19 Unique And Fabulous Experiences In Moscow

fashion travel magazine

  • Destinations

Thinking of visiting Russia? When visiting such a famous city, one must, of course, visit the iconic landmarks first. Moscow has plenty of those, most of them in the center of the city, which is very well-planned for tourists. Once you’ve seen the sights that are on most travelers’ lists, it’s time to branch out and visit some of the lesser-known sites, and there are some fascinating places to see and things to do.

I know this list is long, but I just couldn’t help myself. You probably won’t have the time to see them all. But that’s okay. Just scroll through the list and choose what sounds the most interesting to you. Where possible, make sure to book in advance, as things can get crowded, especially during high season.

Saint Basil's Cathedral in Moscow, Russia

1. The Red Square, Kremlin, And Surroundings

Red Square (Krasnya Ploshad) is the heart and soul of Russia, and where much of the country’s history has unfolded. This is the most famous landmark in Moscow and indeed the whole country, it’s an absolute must-do! The square is always full of people and has a rather festive atmosphere!

Saint Basil’s Cathedral

This is the famous church with the rainbow-colored, onion-domed roof. The cathedral was commissioned in the 1500s by Ivan the Terrible and according to legend, the Tsar thought it was so beautiful, that he ordered that the architect’s eyes be cut out afterward, so he could never build anything more beautiful! He wasn’t called Ivan the Terrible for no reason!

Lenin’s Mausoleum

The “love-it-or-hate-it” of tourist attractions in Russia. A glass sarcophagus containing the embalmed body of Russian revolutionary, Vladimir Lenin. It may seem a bit bizarre to display the mummy of a person, but it has been there for almost half a century and the 2.5 million visitors who come each year, clearly feel the queuing and thorough body search are worth it, to be in Lenin’s presence.

Pro Tip: no photos and no loud talking are allowed inside the Mausoleum.

Eternal Flame

There is an Eternal Flame in honor of an unknown soldier on the left side of Red Square. The hourly changing of the guards is worth seeing.

The Kremlin is the official residence of the Russian president. You can see it from the outside, or you can take an excursion to one of the museums located inside. This is the biggest active fortress in Europe, and holds a week’s worth of attractions! Once behind the 7,332-feet of walls, there are five squares, four cathedrals, 20 towers, various museums, and the world’s largest bell and cannon to see. Worth a special mention is the Armory Chamber that houses a collection of the famous Faberge Eggs.

Pro Tip: You can only go inside the Kremlin if you are part of a tourist group.

Interior of the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscos

2. Bolshoi Theatre

Bolshoi Theatre translates to “The Big Theatre” in Russian, and the building is home to both the Bolshoi Ballet and Bolshoi Opera — among the oldest and most famous ballet and opera companies in the world.

Pro Tip: It’s hard to get an inexpensive ticket, so if you’re reading well in advance of going to Moscow then try buying tickets on the official website . Last-minute tickets cost around $250 per person. If this is out of your budget, about an hour before a performance, you can try buying a ticket at the entrance from a reseller. Most can speak enough English to negotiate the price.

Tour the Bolshoi Theatre: You can take a group guided tour of the Bolshoi Theatre which focuses on the history and architecture of the theatre and behind the scenes. There’s an English language tour that lasts 2 hours and costs around $300 for a group of up to six.

GUM, a popular department store in Moscow

3. Luxury Shopping At GUM And TSUM

Russia’s main department store, GUM, has a stunning interior that is home to over 100 high-end boutiques, selling a variety of brands: from luxurious Dior to the more affordable Zara. Even if shopping is not on your Moscow to-do list GUM is still worth a visit; the glass-roofed arcade faces Red Square and offers a variety of classy eateries. TSUM, one of the biggest luxury malls in town, is right behind the Bolshoi and GUM. It’s an imposing building with lots of history, and worth a visit just for its design and its glass roof.

Christ the Savior Cathedral in Moscow

4. Christ The Savior Cathedral

This is one of Russia’s most visited cathedrals and is a newer addition to the gorgeous array of Muscovite cathedrals, but don’t let its young age fool you. After perestroika, in the early 90s, the revived Russian Orthodox Church was given permission to build a cathedral on this site. It did the location honors and built the largest temple of the Christian Orthodox Church. The façade is as grand as you’d expect, but it’s the inside that will mesmerize you, with its domes, gold, gorgeous paintings, and decor!

The cathedral is located just a few hundred feet away from the Kremlin and was the site of the infamous Pussy Riot protest against Putin back in 2012.

Pro Tip: Bring a shawl to cover your hair as is the local custom.

Gates at Gorky Park in Moscow

5. Gorky Park

Moscow’s premier green space, Gorky Park (Park Gor’kogo) is the city’s biggest and most famous park. There is entertainment on offer here for every taste, from outdoor dancing sessions to yoga classes, volleyball, ping-pong, rollerblading, and bike and boat rental in summer. In winter, half the park turns into a huge ice skating rink. Gorky Park is also home to an open-air movie theater and the Garage Museum of Contemporary Art. There is also Muzeon Art Park, a dynamic contemporary space with a unique collection of 700 sculptures. It is located right in front of Gorky Park.

6. Sparrow Hills Park

If you take a walk from Gorky Park, along the Moscow River embankment, you’ll end up in the city’s other legendary park, Sparrow Hills. Although the park doesn’t offer as many activities as its hip neighbor, it has a great panoramic view of the city

Pro Tip: You can take a free walking tour to all of the above attractions with an English-speaking guide.

River cruise in Moscow

7. River Cruising

One of the best ways to experience Moscow, and see all the famous landmarks, but from a different angle, is from the Moscow River. Take a river cruise. Avoid the tourist crowds. There are little nameless old boats that do the cruise, but if you are looking for a more luxurious experience take the Radisson Blu cruise and enjoy the sights with some good food and a glass of wine.

Moscow Metro station

8. Metro Hopping

Inaugurated in the 1930s, the Moscow Metro system is one of the oldest and most beautiful in the world. Started in Stalinist times, each station is a work of art in its own right. I’d recommend touring the stations between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. This way, you’ll be able to properly see it without the crowds. Ideally, I’d recommend taking a tour with a knowledgeable guide with GuruWalk, who will tell you stories of forgotten stations and how the history of the country is interconnected with the metro development. If going by yourself, then I definitely recommend checking out: Mayakovskaya, Ploschad Revolutsii, Kievskaya, Kropotkinskaya, Kurskaya, and Novoslobodskaya stations.

Visit the free Moscow Metro Museum: For real train enthusiasts, located in the southern vestibule of Sportivnaya station is a small free museum. Here you can take a peek into the driver’s cabin, see a collection of metro tokens from different cities, and see different models of a turnstile, traffic lights, escalator, and more.

Moscow State University at dusk

9. Moscow State University View

In his effort to create a grander Moscow, Stalin had seven skyscrapers built in different parts of town; they’re called the Seven Sisters. The largest of these buildings and the one with the best view is the main building of the Moscow State University. Although this is a little outside the city center, the view is more than worth it.

Izmailovsky Market in Moscow, Russia

10. Izmailovsky Market

Mostly known for the city’s largest flea market, the district of Izmaylovo is home to a maze of shops where you can get just about anything, from artisan crafts to traditional fur hats, handcrafted jewelry, fascinating Soviet memorabilia, and antiquities. It’s also one of Moscow’s largest green spaces. There are often no price tags, so be prepared to haggle a bit. Head to one of the market cafes for a warming mulled wine before continuing your shopping spree.

The History of Vodka Museum is found here, and the museum’s restaurant is the perfect place to sample various brands of the national drink.

Once you’ve covered the more touristy spots, Moscow still has plenty to offer, and the places below will also be full of locals! So for some local vibes, I would strongly recommend the spots below!

The skyscrapers of Moscow City

11. Moscow City

With a completely different vibe, Moscow City (also referred to as Moscow International Business Center) is like a mini Dubai, with lots of impressive tall glass buildings. Here is where you’ll find the best rooftops in towns, like Ruski Restaurant, the highest restaurant both in Moscow City and in Europe. Moscow City is great for crowd-free shopping and the best panoramic views of the city.

Art in the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow

12. Tretyakov Gallery

Tretyakov Gallery started as the private collection of the Tretyakov brothers, who were 19th-century philanthropists. They gave their private collection to the government after their deaths. If there is just one museum you visit in Moscow, I recommend this one!

Tsaritsyno Museum Reserve, former residence of Catherine the Great

13. Tsaritsyno Museum-Reserve

Tsaritsyno was a residence of Catherine the Great more than two centuries ago. It became derelict during the Soviet era but has now been fully renovated. With its opulently decorated buildings, gardens, meadows, and forests, Tsaritsyno Park is the perfect place for a green respite in Moscow.

Kolomenskoye Museum-Reserve in Moscow

14. Kolomenskoye

A 10-minute metro ride from the city center is Kolomenskoe Museum-Reserve, where you can get an idea of what Russia looked like 200 years ago. You’ll find ancient churches (one dating back to the 16th century), the oldest garden in Moscow, and the wonderful fairytale wooden palace of Tsar Alexey Mikhailovich, father of Peter the Great.

Ostankino TV Tower in Moscow at night

15. Ostankino TV Tower

Built in 1967, Ostankino TV Tower was the tallest free-standing construction in the world at the time, it’s still the 8th tallest building in the world and the highest in Europe. It’s also the best observation deck, with a glass floor and 360-degree views. The speedy elevators take you 1,105 feet in next to no time.

Pro Tip: You need to book in advance; entrance is based on specific ticket times and the capacity is limited and only a certain number of tourists are allowed per day. Don’t forget your passport, you’ll need it to get through security.

The floating bridge of Zaryadye Park in Moscow

16. Zaryadye Park

Zaryadye is a newly opened, landscaped urban park so new you won’t find it in a lot of tour guides. The park is near Red Square and is divided into four climatic zones: forest, steppe, tundra, and floodplains, depicting the variety of climatic zones in Russia.

These last three suggestions are a little quirky, but all are really worth checking out.

17. Museum Of Soviet Arcade Games

Release your inner child playing on 66 arcade machines from the Soviet era! What a great way to spend a couple of hours when tired of visiting museums and palaces. The staff speaks excellent English and are happy to explain how the games work.

The rooftops of Moscow, Russia

18. Moscow Rooftop Tour

Take a 1-hour private Moscow rooftop tour with an experienced roofer. I can just about guarantee none of your friends will be able to say they’ve done it! For your comfort, I recommend wearing comfortable shoes. Take your camera, there are some amazing photo opportunities out there!

A pool at Sanduny Banya in Moscow

19. Sanduny Banya

This classical Russian bathhouse opened its doors in 1808 and is famous for combining traditional Russian banya services with luxurious interiors and service. If you enjoy spas and saunas, then you should experience a Russian bathhouse at least once in your life! Go with an open mind and hire a specialist to steam you as it’s meant to be done — by being beaten repeatedly with a besom (a leafy branch)! This is said to improve circulation, but is best done by a professional!

So there you have my list of things to do in Moscow. I could have gone on and on and on, but I didn’t want to try your patience! There are so many things to do in this vibrant city that you’ll definitely need to allocate several days for exploring.

How Do I Clean and Maintain Cast-Iron Cookware?

Portrait of Emma Wartzman

There’s nothing cast-iron cookware can’t do. It’s durable and affordable, is stovetop and oven compatible, has amazing heat retention, and even has some nonstick properties if you care for it correctly. That’s why I named a cast-iron Lodge pan the best in my guide to to the very best skillets . Still, cast-iron’s reputation as a high-maintenance material persists, and people often disagree about the best way to care for it. Here, I set out to answer the question once and for all: How do you clean and maintain cast-iron cookware?

So how do I clean my cast-iron cookware?

It’s fairly simple. Once your skillet has cooled down after cooking, wash it as you would anything else: with water, dish soap, and a nonabrasive or lightly abrasive sponge. Contrary to the hard-to-shake urban legend,  soap will not damage a well-seasoned skillet  (and more on seasoning below) .  If that doesn’t work and you still have stuck-on food, try a  silicone scraper  or a chain-mail scrubber. If  that  doesn’t work, simmer some water in the pan for three to five minutes, let it cool enough to be able to touch it, and scrape or scrub again. Then be sure to dry your skillet thoroughly with a dish towel .

Just note: While it’s fine to clean your skillet with water, do not leave it to soak (or even air dry) and never put your skillet in the dishwasher as this will cause rust and degrade the seasoning.

And how do I season it?

Seasoning — a.k.a. applying a thin coating of oil on the surface of your cast-iron skillet to prevent rust and impart a smooth cooking surface — is the most integral part of keeping cast-iron cookware in good shape. These days, you’ll pretty much only find pre-seasoned pieces on the market, meaning whatever company you buy from has already treated it with oil. But if you’ve inherited an old pan, bought one used, or let your once-new model get worse for wear, you’ll want to season it yourself.

To get the exact how-to of this procedure, I consulted Shannon Van Dusen, associate product and test-kitchen manager at Lodge, which is perhaps the most well-known cast-iron company around. (She also used to work in customer care, so she’s seen it all.) Van Dusen says to start by scraping off any loose surface flakes you see with something rough, like a scouring pad or even steel wool. Wash the skillet with soap and water and towel dry thoroughly. Then, pour a small amount of neutral oil — like canola or vegetable — onto the surface and rub it all over (including the bottom and side walls) with a paper towel. (Olive oil isn’t a hard no, but because its smoke point is lower, you’ll have to be more careful when you heat it.) It should be covered but not thickly glossed. Place the skillet upside down in your oven and bake it at 450-to-500 degrees for an hour. This position allows any excess oil to drip off (some people are more heavy-handed than they realize, Van Dusen says). If you place it upright, it’s likely to pool and create a sticky residue.

Two additional pro tips: Put a baking sheet underneath the skillet to catch drips, and let it cool down inside after you turn the oven off so you’re not handling it while blazing hot.

Okay, but do I need to season regularly, even if everything looks fine?

“The more you use your skillet, the better it gets,” Van Dusen says. “When you brown ground beef, when you bake in it, when you fry in it, you’re seasoning.” For this reason — especially if you use your pan a fair amount — you don’t need to worry about a dedicated seasoning until you start seeing some degradation or discoloration on the surface.

Still, both Van Dusen and I regularly add a very thin layer of oil to the surface after washing and drying, just as a little extra insurance. (This is also helpful to do every once in a while on the bottom, which doesn’t get the benefit of the oil you use for cooking, especially so if you have a gas range where the flame makes direct contact and can burn off seasoning over time without reinforcement.)

What’s the deal with enameled cast iron?

Enameled cast iron — also used to make some skillets I love , and even more famously used to make Dutch ovens — is simply cast iron with one to a few layers of enamel coating over top. The upside: This makes the pieces even more durable and easy to maintain. The downside: This means that for the most part, they’re significantly more expensive than standard cast iron. (And though Joanna Rosenberg, chief sales officer at Staub, says chipping or scratching is very rare, and all enameled cast iron should be able to hold up to stainless-steel utensils , I will add that if the bottom gets damaged somehow, it can’t be reseasoned.)

To learn about the cleaning process, I talked to Rosenberg and Sara Whitaker, director of category marketing at Le Creuset. They both say to start by cleaning the way you would anything else: with soap and a sponge. And they both say that putting pieces in the dishwasher is okay — though Whitaker notes that hand-washing is recommended to preserve the finish over time, as “constant dishwashing may lead to some dulling of the enamel coating,” she says.

If you still have bits that won’t release, Rosenberg says you can graduate to Bar Keeper’s Friend , which is totally safe to use on the surface, and scrub with the more abrasive side of a two-sided sponge or a Scotch-Brite pad — really, “anything that’s a step down from steel wool,” she says. That should take care of it, but if you’re still having trouble, try adding water to the pot or pan, letting it boil for a few minutes and then giving it another go. Soaking is okay and can help here, too.
