I wonder if this related to the RV downturn?

Those RV'ers entering into the camping community during the C-19 debacle are no longer interested in camping saturating the used market by selling their 2-year old rigs - softening the pre-owned market and driving down first-time RV buyers, IMO.

So, KV is looking for a president to "prepare the company to be sold..."

Hmm, sounds like a temporary position.

FYI, this is about a firearms company, not about firearms per se.

I noticed this morning that Escape is no longer accepting applications for a new president on LinkedIn.

AS may buy them to get into the molded fiberglass RV market...

Do you think airstream is going to take another run at fiberglass? The airstream nest was a great fiberglass trailer but was abandoned by airstream pretty quickly.

Well, you know Airstream tried that when they bought Robert Johans original concept design for The Nest . He actually became the project manager on the Nest product development team at Airstream after the sale. The trailer was only manufactured for about 2 years and they dropped it, never publicly giving a reason.

I stepped inside one that was on display at the Hiawassee Rally several years ago. The thing that sticks in my memory most was how HOT it was inside. It was like being inside a glass house in Mississippi in July.

I would be really surprised if Airstream tried that venture again.

I totally agree.

And, if, on the slim chance Airstream did, and it followed the same stream as the Nest purchase, there would likely be a bunch of great folks in Chilliwack without jobs in a year or two.

(They've tried fiberglass over the years, even before NEST. ) My bet is, they stay in their lane, this time. https://www.airstream.com/blog/nest-isnt-airstreams-first-foray-into-fiberglass/ (The Nest was the only foray into fiberglass, under Thor ownership. )

My hope for Escape, and their employees, is that a local Canadian company buys them out.

There's room for all of us in the market.

If I were an Escape owner, I would be about to poop a squealing worm. If I had one on order, I'd cancel it. Escape did away with their own service department under the current leadership. Even if you need warranty work, you've got to find a placed and get it done elsewhere. The also went to some weird form of lottery where if you won, you could cancel your existing order and take the 'Inventory Trailer' du jour that week at whatever price it would have sold for. No choices of colors, options, anything. But, you could get it today instead of waiting until your due date which at that time was about 26 months out. I doubt they're still doing that. The company is presently owned by the hedge fund company KV Private Equity Fund I .

Here's a copy of a post on the Escape Forum:

After reading comments about Inventory Units as well as learning the lead times for new orders have dramatically shortened I wondered who KV Capital- the owner of Escape Trailers is and found some interesting facts. The original company was formed in 2006 and engaged in Mortgage Lending. their name back then was The Mortgage Corner. In 2010 they rebranded as KV Capital. This was their business until 2017 when they started KV Private Equity Fund I. In May 2017 they bought Northern Lite. In October 2017 they bought Off Grid Trailers. In July 2018 they bought Escape Trailer. In October 2018 they bought Campion Boats. In August 2022 they shut down Campion Boats and liquidated all the equipment and supplies and listed the land and 104,000 sq.ft. building for 14.9 Million. KV Capital says they have plans to re-locate the business and resume building boats under the Campion nameplate through a contract manufacturing arrangement with an as-yet undetermined partner. In September 2022 KV Capital divests Northern Lite & Off Grid Trailers to Tri-West Capital-founded in 1998 and has a much larger portfolio of Funds with some 28 different companies across a wide range of industries. https://triwest.ca/portfolio/ So what about Escape Trailer's prospects? Seems like the Mortgage Lending Business is falling significantly- From PR Newswire: "Lenders issued a total of 1,518,933 residential mortgages in the fourth quarter of 2022 - the lowest number since the first quarter of 2014. The latest figure was down 24.5 percent from 2,010,609 in the third quarter of 2022 and down 55.2 percent from 3,390,801 in the fourth quarter of 2021.Mar 2, 2023." I see KV Capital re-launched their Residential Mortgage Brokering in 2021 and in 2022 divested 3 of the 4 Recreational products mfg's they purchased in 2017/2018. https://www.kvcapital.ca/about

Although it is an extremely poor strategy, we can "hope" that somehow the workers will survive somehow.

>

The History of Escape Trailers

Every Escape trailer is built upon years of experience. We started building trailers out of a passion to create the best possible fiberglass trailer on the market and that passion continues today.

The Beginning - Reace and Tammy Harmatuik

In 1993, Reace started purchasing older fiberglass trailers and repairing them. People kept stopping and asking if the trailers were for rent. So, Reace started an RV rental company – Economy Travel Trailer Rentals.

The First Escape

Our RV rental customers were asking for extra features in the fiberglass rental trailers. We hired our first staff member and were officially in the fiberglass trailer industry. We formed Escape Trailer Industries.

Early Grower

We could only build one trailer at a time, and we didn’t have a demonstration trailer to use for marketing purposes, fortunately we had that one special customer who let us use their trailer for marketing. To improve Quality we brought the fiberglass and welding shops on site so that we had more control of the product development. As business continued to increase, we started experimenting with methods of how to sell the Escape Trailer.

Building Customer Centric Relationships

In 2006 we tried to sell through Dealers. The challenge was customer relationship, we felt the key was understanding our customers and building products that fully satisfied their needs. We struggled with the lack of interaction with our customers. It did not allow us to follow our business model. So we closed down for six months, worked on the design and introduction of our Escape 5.0 fifth-wheel, and returned to direct sales.

First Escape Rally

The first Escape Trailer rally. The start of an annual tradition open to all Escape owners or Soon to Be owners.

Manufacturer Direct Sales

We quickly discovered that Customer direct sales with our manufactured product were superior to all others. A manufacturer with direct sales can afford to put an emphasis on Quality while maintaining a fair price for customers. The business grew quickly. In 2012 Escape Trailer Industries purchased the current property.

In 2016 we expanded with a 3rd building on the property. This was combined with renovations and upgrades to the existing facilities. We created a world class fiberglass manufacturing capability along with a revamped production line. Customer appreciation continued to grow as did our orders, and range of options.

The New Beginning

We partnered in July 2018 with KV Private Equity, and began the next phase of our growth strategy. This gave us the extra support to take Escape to the next level.

10th Year Rally Anniversary

The Escape rally has grown to over 150 trailers. We launched a new Maple interior, and continue to grow our brand. New customer relationship support tools, new configuration tools, and a host of other improvements specifically aimed at customer support and product quality.

Continued Expansion

A customer driven project! After receiving requests for a family-friendly upgrade of the E19, we introduced the E21NE. While identical in floorplan it features a wider shell (which translates into a wider aisle), more storage and most importantly: a spacious u-shaped dinette.

Introducing New Options

With the release of a third interior choice

E23 Prototype & Education

Excitement ran high as Escape welcomed the arrival of the molds and chassis for the brand new E23. This unit will feature a rear entry, walk around (or twin) bed and aluminum chassis and our engineers are working hard on making a long awaited dream come true. To help customers make their best and informed decisions on option choices our team introduced an interactive configurator tool. We also remember the Escape Rally in Osoyoos as a wonderful get together for both staff and Escape owners and we look forward to meeting again next year.

Diddy's private jet tracked to caribbean island amid raids in u.s., diddy loveair private jet tracked amid raids down on caribbean island, exclusive 3.6k 3/25/2024 4:22 pm pt.

Diddy 's homes were raided in the U.S. to kick off the week -- but the guy's own private jet is miles away in a completely different nation ... although it's unclear if he's aboard himself.

TMZ has tracked Diddy's personal LoveAir LLC jet -- the well-known black Gulfstream 5 that Diddy has flaunted and flown for years now -- and it looks like the aircraft is currently on the ground in Antigua ... which is down in the Caribbean.

Based on the flight activity, viewed by TMZ, Diddy's jet has been up and down California between Sunday and Monday -- taking off from Sacramento Executive Airport Sunday evening around 5:30 PM PT and landing at Palm Springs Int'l Airport about an hour later.

An hour after that, around 7:30 PM PT, Diddy's jet took off from Palm Springs yet again and landed at Van Nuys Airport, which is in the L.A. area, about 30 minutes later around 8:00 PM PT. Around 9 AM PT Monday, the jet took off from Van Nuys airport and landed at some point in Antigua.

The plane is currently grounded there, although the flight data has yet to update and register him as having officially landed. In any case, it's definitely Diddy's jet ... no question.

The only thing that remains unanswered is whether Diddy is on the plane -- we don't have any evidence he is at this point ... and we also don't know what's happening on the scene.

As we reported ... two of Diddy's homes, in L.A. and MIami, were swarmed by federal law enforcement agencies Monday -- and armed officials stormed the properties, taking some people into custody ... including his sons Justin and King . Unclear if any arrests took place.

The raids are believed to have stemmed from accusations hurled at Diddy in multiple lawsuits -- which have touched on alleged human and sex trafficking, among other claims ... all of which he's vehemently denied.

We've reached out to Diddy's rep and lawyers ... so far, no word back.

Ohio mother who left toddler alone when she went on vacation is sentenced in child’s murder

An Ohio woman whose toddler died after she left her alone for more than a week while she went on vacation was sentenced to life in prison without parole Monday, the Cuyahoga County prosecutor said.

Kristel Candelario, 32, pleaded guilty last month t o aggravated murder and endangering children in connection with the death of her 16-month-old daughter, Jailyn, last year.

Candelario left for vacation June 6 and left Jailyn alone. She visited Detroit and Puerto Rico, the prosecutor’s office said.

When she returned on June 16, she found Jailyn dead and called police, authorities said.

Jailyn Calendario mom mother sentencing court legal law child death

Jailyn died of starvation and severe dehydration due to pediatric neglect, Dr. Elizabeth Mooney, the deputy Cuyahoga County medical examiner, said in court Monday. The manner was ruled homicide.

The child was extremely dehydrated and emaciated, weighing 13 pounds, 7 pounds less than in her last doctor's visit less than two months before, Mooney said.

Mooney, who conducted the autopsy, called Jailyn's death "one of the most tragic and unfortunate cases I’ve had in my career thus far." She said the child could have suffered for possibly a week.

In a statement Monday, prosecutor Michael C. O’Malley called Jailyn “a beautiful baby girl who was taken from this world due to her mother’s unimaginable selfishness.”

Candelario told the court Monday that “every day I ask forgiveness from God and from my daughter Jailyn.”

She also asked forgiveness from her other daughter and from her parents.

Jailyn Calendario.

Candelario’s attorney, Derek Smith, said that no one was trying to excuse her behavior but that Candelario was struggling emotionally and was overwhelmed as a single mother of two children.

Candelario had tried to harm herself earlier in 2023 and she had been placed on antidepressants, which she stopped taking without tapering down in dosage as required, which can cause side effects, Smith told the court. Candelario was "not thinking clearly," he said.

“I am not trying to justify my actions, but nobody knew how much I was suffering and what I was going through,” Candelario said through an interpreter.

Assistant Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Anna Faraglia told the court Monday that Candelario had left Jailyn alone for two days immediately before she left on vacation.

"The thought of this child dying every day while she's having fun — humanity can't stomach that," Faraglia said. "And those are the actions that need to be punished. She abandoned her daughter and left her for dead."

In sentencing Candelario, Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Judge Brendan Sheehan noted that the police and the medical professionals involved called it one of the most horrific cases they’d ever seen.

“It stunned people across this world, because it defies one of the basic human responsibilities,” Sheehan said. He called it “the ultimate act of betrayal.”

Who owns the ship that struck the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore?

By Megan Cerullo

Edited By Anne Marie Lee

Updated on: March 26, 2024 / 5:05 PM EDT / CBS News

The collapse of Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge on Tuesday after being struck by a cargo ship has raised questions about who owns and manages the ship, as well as on the potential impact on one the busiest ports in the U.S.

Called the Dali, the 948-foot vessel that hit the bridge is managed by Synergy Marine Group, a Singapore-based company with over 660 ships under management around the world, according to its website . The group said the ship was operated by charter vessel company Synergy Group and chartered by Danish shipping giant Maersk at the time of the incident, which sent vehicles and people tumbling into the Patapsco River.

"We are horrified by what has happened in Baltimore, and our thoughts are with all of those affected," Maersk said in a statement to CBS News Tuesday, in which it also confirmed the ship was carrying cargo for Maersk customers. The company had no crew or personnel aboard the ship.

The Dali, which can carry up to 10,000 twenty-foot equivalent units, or TEUs, was carrying nearly 4,700 containers at the time of the collision. It was operated by a 22-person, Indian crew. It was not immediately clear what kind of cargo the ship was carrying.

Who owns and manages the Dali?

The Dali is owned by Grace Ocean Private, a Singapore-based company that provides water transportation services. The ship was chartered by Danish container shipping company Maersk at the time of the collision.

Synergy Marine, founded in 2006, provides a range of ship management services, including managing ships' technical components and their crews and overseeing safety, according to S&P Capital IQ. Its parent company, Unity Group Holdings International, an investment holding company, was founded in 2008 and is based in Hong Kong.

Where was the ship headed?

The outbound ship had left Baltimore and was headed for Colombo, the capital of Sri Lanka, Synergy Marine Group said in a press release .

How busy is the Port of Baltimore?

In 2023, the Port of Baltimore handled a record 52.3 million tons of foreign cargo, worth $80 billion, according to the office of Maryland Gov. Wes Moore. The port is also a significant provider of local jobs.

The top port in the U.S. for sugar and gypsum imports, it is the ninth busiest U.S. port by the total volume and value of foreign cargo handled. All vessel traffic into and out of the facility is currently suspended, although the port remains open and trucks continue to be processed within the its terminals, according to a statement release by Port of Baltimore officials.

What is the potential local economic impact?

Directly, the port supports 15,300 jobs, while another 140,000 in the area are related to port activities. The jobs provide a combined $3.3 billion in personal income, according to a CBS News report . The Port of Baltimore said Tuesday that it is unclear how long ship traffic will be suspended.

The disaster also caused chaos for local drivers. The Maryland Transportation Authority said all lanes were closed in both directions on I-695, with traffic being detoured to I-95 and I-895.

How could the bridge collapse affect consumers and businesses?

Experts say the bridge collapse could cause significant supply chain disruptions.

"While Baltimore is not one of the largest U.S. East Coast ports, it still imports and exports more than 1 million containers each year, so there is the potential for this to cause significant disruption to supply chains," Emily Stausbøll, a market analyst at Xeneta, an ocean and air freight analytics platform, said in a statement.

She added that freight services from Asia to the East Coast in the U.S. have already been hampered by drought in the Panama Canal, as well as risks related to conflict in the Red Sea. Nearby ports, including those in New York, New Jersey and Virginia, will be relied on to handle more shipments if Baltimore remains inaccessible.

Whether ocean freight shipping rates will rise dramatically, potentially affecting consumers as retailers pass along higher costs, will depend on how much extra capacity the alternate ports can handle, Stausbøll said. "However, there is only so much port capacity available and this will leave supply chains vulnerable to any further pressure."

Marty Durbin, senior vice president of policy at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, said that the bridge is a critical connector of "people, businesses, and communities."

"Unfortunately, its prolonged closure will likely disrupt commercial activities and supply chains that rely on the bridge and Port of Baltimore each day," he said in a statement.

What other industries could be affected?

Trucking companies could be severely affected by the disaster.

"Aside from the obvious tragedy, this incident will have significant and long-lasting impacts on the region," American Trucking Associations spokesperson Jessica Gail said, calling Key Bridge and Baltimore's port "critical components'' of the nation's infrastructure.

Gail noted that 1.3 million trucks cross the bridge every year — 3,600 a day. Trucks that carry hazardous materials will now have to make 30 miles of detours around Baltimore because they are prohibited from using the city's tunnels, she said, adding to delays and increasing fuel costs.

"Time-wise, it's going to hurt us a lot," added Russell Brehm, the terminal manager in Baltimore for Lee Transport, which trucks hazardous materials such as petroleum products and chemicals. The loss of the bridge will double to two hours the time it takes Lee to get loads from its terminal in Baltimore's Curtis Bay to the BJ's gasoline station in the waterfront neighborhood of Canton, he estimated.

Cruise operators are also being affected. A Carnival cruise ship that set off Sunday for the Bahamas had been scheduled to return to Baltimore on March 31. Carnival said Tuesday it is "currently evaluating options for Carnival Legend's scheduled return on Sunday." The company also has cruises scheduled to set sail from Baltimore through the summer.

Norwegian Cruise Line last year introduced new routes departing from the Port of Baltimore. Its sailings are scheduled for late this year. The company said the Key Bridge collapse doesn't immediately require it to reroute any ships.

Who will pay to rebuild the bridge?

President Biden said Tuesday that the federal government, with congressional support, would pay to rebuild the bridge.

"We're going to work with our partners in Congress to make sure the state gets the support it needs. It's my intention that the federal government will pay for the entire cost of reconstructing that bridge," Biden said in comments from the White House. "And I expect the Congress to support my effort. This is going take some time. The people of Baltimore can count on us though, to stick with them, at every step of the way, till the port is reopened and the bridge is rebuilt."

KZ RV Review: 4.0 Out Of 5.0 Stars

Kz rv overview, kz rv lines, kz rv build quality, kz rv customer support, kz rv warranty, kz rv reviews and ratings, kz rv review: is kz a good rv manufacturer, faq: kz rv reviews, kz rv review.

KZ RVs may not be a household name outside of the recreational vehicle (RV) world like some of the industry’s best RV brands . But for plugged-in RVers, the company is a well-known entity. Over the last five decades, the company has developed a reputation for quality campers , as evidenced both by industry awards and glittering KZ RV reviews.

We wanted to put that reputation to the test. This KZ RV review takes an in-depth look at the company’s costs, quality, customer support, and owner reviews. You can use what you learn to help you decide if KZ is the right RV manufacturer for your new RV .

Between KZ’s well-earned reputation for quality, its large selection of models, and its better-than-average warranty program, the brand is a solid choice for a camper manufacturer at multiple price points. Although there are some of the same complaints you’ll find with any RV brand about quality and service, its strengths earned the company a strong 4.0 out of 5.0 stars in this KZ RV review.

KZ got its start in the RV world making truck campers , operating out of a gas station in Middlebury, Indiana , in 1972. Since then, the company has relocated to nearby Shipshewana where it now produces full lines of travel trailers , fifth wheels , and toy haulers .

While the company–like many–now falls under the Thor Industries umbrella, it has maintained a reputation for producing high-quality towable RVs. KZ makes travel trailers, fifth-wheels , and toy hauler RVs. It doesn’t make motorhomes like Class A , Class B , or Class C RVs. You can find those from brands like Jayco and Forest River .

While it tends to be a little more expensive than some of its competitors, RV buyers can find campers from KZ across the price spectrum. The brand has multiple options in the entry-level category under $30,000 , like the KZ Connect and KZ Sportsmen lines. But the brand also offers a few luxury campers that sell for more than $100,000 brand new.

As with almost every RV manufacturer, you have many options when it comes to features and amenities that you can have built into your KZ RV . These options can easily push an entry-level model into mid-range territory or even higher.

KZ produces 14 lines of RVs, each with its own range of models and floor plans . While some of these lines only feature models in one category, several have models in multiple categories. Different lines offer different sizes and amenities and, as a result, come with different price points.

KZ RVs have a long-held reputation for build quality. When company founder Daryl Zook sold the company to Thor Industries in 2014, many KZ fans were understandably concerned that the company wouldn’t be able to maintain its quality standards. However, so far, that doesn’t seem to be the case.

As a testament to that quality, KZ has won the Dealer’s Satisfaction Index (DSI) Quality Circle award an impressive 18 out of the 25 times it has been issued. Five of those awards were won from 2014 until now.

The DSI Quality Circle award is issued every year by the RV Dealers Association to the top 10 manufacturers in the RV industry, rated on dealer satisfaction. Reliability and quality are some of the primary considerations in this survey. Clearly, RV dealers think very highly of the brand’s quality and have for some time.

In addition to its reputation for build quality, KZ has also built a reputation for providing helpful after sales service. Its customer service phone number is easy to find on the website, although the company does not make it clear when representatives are available.

But much of this reputation likely has to do with the abundance of resources the company makes available to its customers. On its website, KZ offers links to helpful resources like:

 • Owner’s manuals
 • Towing guide
 • Self-service support
 • Vacation planner

Like most RV companies, KZ also has an owners forum where people can share information and ask questions. However, this forum is not as active as those of some other brands, so it may not be as helpful as some. Still, it’s a good place to connect with other KZ owners who might have insight into your particular model.

KZ touts its warranty heavily on its website. Branded as “KZ True 2,” the company’s warranty is a two-year “hitch-to-bumper” warranty . This is an extra year of protection compared to many other big names in the RV industry.

It’s important to note the KZ True 2 warranty doesn’t come with every model. Most models come with a one- year warranty . However, you’ll get the company’s two- year warranty on these products:

 • Durango half-ton fifth wheels
 • Durango fifth wheels
 • Durango Gold fifth wheels
 • Connect SE travel trailers
 • Connect travel trailers
 • Sportsmen fifth wheels
 • Sportsmen destination trailers
 • Sportster toy haulers
 • Venom V-Series toy haulers
 • Venom toy haulers

As with all warranties , it’s important to read the fine print carefully. Companies often include terms and exclusions to warranties that make them cover less than most people would assume. Despite the company’s strong reputation, you should always make sure you know exactly what is and isn’t covered by your warranty .

Based on the company’s reputation for quality and service, it should come as no surprise that it holds an A+ rating and accreditation from the Better Business Bureau (BBB). This top rating from the organization indicates that it handles complaints from customers well.

Reviews from customers do vary a bit online. KZ has an overall 3.6 out of 5.0-star rating on RVInsider , which is above average for the site. Customers gave KZ three or more stars for the Livability, Overall Quality, Floorplan , and Driveability/Towing categories. Curiously, however, they only gave it 2.7 stars in the Warranty category.

Positive KZ RV Reviews

Customers mention just about everything when they leave favorable KZ RV reviews. But the overall build quality and amenities are frequent topics of these reviews.

“Has lots of great options. I love the pullout tubs that go under the u-shaped dinette for easy pull out storage. It had a huge pantry. It has USB charging ports at every bed.” – Jonathan, 2021 KZ Connect
“Very good quality and the fit and finish–the best we have had and this is our fourth RV. It is built with full-time RVers in mind. The rear kitchen and lots of counter space is the best we have seen in any brand.” – Bert, 2017 KZ Durango Gold

Negative KZ RV Reviews

KZ has its share of negative reviews online as well. Most of the people who leave these unfavorable reviews describe quality issues and problems with their dealership .

“It has been at the dealership twice for more than four weeks each time being repaired. The main AC went out, the awning had to be replaced, the pipes are leading in the bathroom, [and] the molding has come loose on the ceiling.” – Troy, 2016 KZ Spree
“Within one month the silicon around the kitchen sink failed and the countertop [delaminated]. The bulb seal along the slide out is dry rotting and cracking. The slide out also leaks into the main cabin if you get caught driving in the rain.” –Tim, 2019 KZ Connect

Despite some reports of quality issues, it’s clear that KZ continues to earn its reputation as a manufacturer of high-quality RVs. You only need to look as far as the fact that it consistently earns a spot among the top RV manufacturers in the DSI Quality Circle awards to confirm.

KZ offers towables at multiple price points, making it an accessible brand for a wide range of people. The company’s two-year “hitch-to-bumper” warranty is also a strong selling point–although it is a little disappointing that this warranty doesn’t come with all models.

Overall, there’s a lot to like about KZ RVs and not much to dislike about the company. For people looking for a dependable RV in the towable category, KZ would be an excellent place to start.

Who manufactures KZ RVs?

KZ RV is one of the many RV brands owned and operated by Thor Industries . Thor also owns a number of other popular RV brands including Airstream, Dutchmen, Jayco , Heartland RV, Keystone RV, and Thor Motor Coach.

Where are KZ travel trailers made?

KZ manufactures its travel trailers in Shipshewana , Indiana . It has manufactured its RVs since the company was founded in 1972.

What is the KZ climate package?

KZ RV offers a climate package option that adds insulation to your camper . This option can improve heating and cooling efficiency by up to 40 percent, according to the manufacturer.

When did KZ sell to Thor?

After just over four decades in business, KZ sold its outstanding shares to Thor Industries in 2014.

How to escape if your car goes underwater

Exiting the car in the first minute it begins to sink improves your chance of survival.

It’s a nightmare scenario for drivers: Your car leaves the road and plunges into water, transforming your vehicle into a sinking trap.

The collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge into the Patapsco River early Tuesday may have stoked fears that you could encounter a similar catastrophe in your own car. Officials with the Baltimore fire department said sonar has detected vehicles submerged in the water, but it was unclear whether anyone was inside.

A distress call from the freighter that crashed into the bridge and caused the collapse gave officials time to halt more vehicle traffic over the bridge, said Maryland Gov. Wes Moore (D). As of midday Tuesday, two workers had been rescued from a crew that was repairing potholes on the Key Bridge; six workers were still missing.

In the right conditions, drivers who stay calm have a chance to escape an underwater car. In 2013, a 22-year-old woman from Calvert County, Md., survived after her car went off the side of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and fell 27 feet into the water.

One minute to get out

Thermal physiologist Gordon Giesbrecht, a retired University of Manitoba professor with an expertise in vehicle submersion and hypothermia, said passengers have one minute to rescue themselves from a sinking car. Once the vehicle becomes even partially submerged, the odds of survival are slim.

“A minute is kind of an average number,” Giesbrecht said. “So the windows will certainly work for 60 seconds, but if you know what you’re doing, you can open that window in 10 or 15 seconds.”

He said travelers should memorize the acronym SWOC:

 • Seat belts off.
 • Windows open.
 • Out immediately.
 • Children first.

“A lot of people think you should open the doors, which you shouldn’t,” Giesbrecht said. “The car is just going deeper and deeper, and once the water gets up against the window, then you won’t even be able to open the window. So you’ve got to get that window open as soon as you can.”

Giesbrecht said electric windows should still operate within a minute “because your ignition was on.”

When helping children, push the oldest out first so you can help the youngest passengers. Giesbrecht said it is easier to push than pull passengers out, so remain in the car until your dependents have safely evacuated.

Cars in deep water typically sink nose first, so you can buy a few more seconds by exiting out a back window. If there’s a release button in the front seat for a rear hatch, then you can escape through the back, but don’t waste time trying to locate it.

Once the car begins to sink nose down, the passengers will start to run out of air. Any air bubbles will escape out the back. In shallower water, a car might descend horizontally, so passengers could sustain themselves on a trapped air pocket, but Giesbrecht said this scenario is “very rare.”

Tools don’t work on laminated glass

According to Giesbrecht, smashing a car window is not feasible. Cars that have laminated windows instead of tempered glass are resistant to hard force; not one of the six tools tested in a AAA study were able to break through. A label on the bottom corner of a side window will identify tempered or laminated glass, but that helps only if you have it memorized.

Giesbrecht said that, when you have only a minute to save yourself, it’s not worth the time to search for an instrument.

“Very few people could ever break a window in the first place,” he said. “Once the physics of the water changes, you can’t break the window anyway, even if you had a hammer.”

Once you’re in the water, Giesbrecht said, you need to control your breath, assess your surroundings and climb onto or cling to the vehicle while it is afloat.

“You can hang on to the vehicle as long as you can,” he said, “or until you determine the closest or easiest place you can get to.”

Hypothermia is not an immediate problem, Giesbrecht said, because it takes an hour for someone to become cold enough for the heart to stop. However, drowning is a real concern, especially if you panic or go into shock after plunging into the water.

“The first thing that will happen when you’re in cold water is a cold shock response, which is gasping and hyperventilating or heavy breathing,” he said. The cold could incapacitate your muscles and nerves, and you could lose your ability to swim.

“We have the 1-10-1 principle,” Giesbrecht added. “You have one minute to get your breathing under control. Ten minutes of meaningful movement. And about an hour before you become unconscious due to hypothermia.”

Make yourself visible

Andy Blair, director of the National Outdoor Leadership School Teton Valley, offered several survival tips for after you have escaped the car and are in the water. He said to keep your shoes on. They can be helpful when swimming in open water and scrambling on rocks or other sharp terrain.

“If they’re really big, heavy boots, they might be more of an impediment,” he said, “but once you get to shore, you’re going to want to have some shoes on.”

Blair said wearing street clothes in cold water that is moving downstream and not having a flotation device is “probably one of your worst-case situations.” However, he recommends securing any loose garments that could snag in the water. He said more form-fitting clothes will reduce your surface area and your exposure to the water.

If swimming to shore is not an option because of the distance or your stamina level, grab a piece of buoyant debris or hoist yourself up on a larger object if you can. Also, hold up an eye-catching item that could attract the attention of a search-and-rescue crew or a bystander.

“For the average person in that situation, their best bet is to find something they can stay afloat with and make themselves as visible as possible,” he said.
