Venice (Chioggia), Italy

Chioggia is a charming fishing community located at the southern end of the Venetian Lagoon and steeped in age-old seafaring traditions. Its combination of canals, bridges and fishing boats have lent it the nickname “Little Venice.” Lined with shops, bars and restaurants, the main pedestrian street of Corso del Popolo exudes a lively atmosphere amid the aroma of delicious fresh seafood dishes. Chioggia shares a long history of cultural and economic ties with Venice, dating back to the Middle Ages, and is a scenic journey by water taxi from the capital of the Veneto region.

Traveling with Sweeney

Traveling with Sweeney

Inspiration and information for the best in luxury, cultural, and active travel, mediterranean moments: scenes from a viking cruise, photo highlights of a viking mediterranean odyssey cruise.

From Venice to Barcelona, our Viking Mediterranean Odyssey cruise included new as well as familiar destinations. In new locations, we looked for the highlights that capture the essence of the place. In places we had previously visited, we looked for something new, something we missed in the past – even finding lesser-known sites and having opportunities to meet the locals.

We’ve got more to come about our time sailing the Mediterranean on the Viking Sea and our excursion highlights, but we’re starting out with this introduction to some trip highlights and commentary that we posted to our social media accounts. Are you following us?

Photo highlights from Venice to Barcelona

Venice, Italy

This was our second time in Venice, a fairy tale city to visit . It is a beautiful place to begin a Mediterranean Odyssey cruise. Our ship was docked in Chioggia, a town about an hour away by ferry.

Approaching Venice, Italy by ferry on the Venice lagoon during a Viking Mediterranean cruise

“Beautiful Venice, Italy! And check out those clouds. This was our view of St. Mark’s Basilica as we came into the city on a ferry from Chioggia where our ship is docked. More pics to come from our Mediterranean Odyssey cruise. We’re just getting started!”

Split, Croatia

We’d been looking forward to adding Croatia to our list of countries visited. Split is a delight!

Scenes of Split, Croatia during on Viking Mediterranean Odyssey cruise

“Great day in Split, Croatia on our Viking Mediterranean Odyssey cruise. A few pics from our walking tour to give you a taste — bistro on Narodni Square, woman touching the “lucky” toe of Gregory of Nin statue, and the Riva Promenade”

Dubrovnik, Croatia

A few hours in Dubrovnik convinced us that a return visit is warranted and we’ve got plans for that coming up soon.

Sweeney in Dubrovnik, Croatia

“Greetings from Dubrovnik! After a night of sailing along the Adriatic coast, we just arrived on the Viking Sea and after breakfast al fresco with a view, we’re heading out to tour the city.”

Corfu, Greece

2022 turned out to be the year for our long-awaited Greece travel dreams to come true. In June we had a wonderful 12-day visit to Greece that included Athens, Santorini, and Crete. This visit to Corfu was a lovely addition to our Greek odyssey.

View of Corfu bay from a hilltop above Corfu Town during a Viking Mediterranean Odyssey cruise

“From the hills above Corfu Town on the island of Corfu in the Ionian Sea on our Viking shore excursion. So many Greek islands yet to visit sometime.”

Naples, Italy

Napoli! Here is another city that we would love to explore in more depth and have more pizza!

mediterranean odyssey viking cruise

“The Traveling with Sweeney duo in Naples, Italy on our Viking Mediterranean Odyssey cruise. From panoramic vistas to freshly prepared pizza (where it all began).”

Rome/Ostia, Italy

So who knew about this amazing site of Roman ruins near Rome? I had no idea until I saw it as an optional excursion on our Mediterranean Odyssey cruise. What a find! (But try to keep it our secret.)

Ancient Roman ruins of Ostia near Rome, Italy visited on a Viking Mediterranean Odyssey cruise

Roman ruins of Ostia, Italy

“ When in Rome … take a day trip to Ostia. Established about 620 BC, Ostia was Rome’s original port at the mouth of the Tiber. This is vast complex of ancient Roman ruins providing a look at the lifestyles of the Romans of the times. We chose this Viking excursion while docked outside of Rome since we’ve been to the city twice before (of course, would love to visit many more times) and this was something quite different and lesser known (even though it’s amazing).”

Tuscany, Italy

One cannot visit Tuscany (or anywhere in Italy, really) too often. It’s been several years since we had an immersive travel experience in this region of Italy and we couldn’t wait to get a taste of Tuscany again.

Tuscany cooking class excursion on Viking Mediterranean Odyssey cruise

“Fun and delicious day at Castello del Trebbio near Florence in Tuscany. We learned, we prepared, we wined and dined.”

Monte Carlo, Monaco

Monaco isn’t just about the glamor of Monte Carlo. On an included shore excursion, we got a nice introduction to its history and charm. But it was also pretty cool to step inside the famous Monte Carlo Casino (on the far right in photo) and imagine the lifestyle of the rich and famous.

View of Monte Carlo at night from the port aboard the Viking Sea on a Mediterranean Odyssey cruise

Monte Carlo

“Even when I was very young, I thought about sailing along the French Riviera. Our Viking Mediterranean Odyssey cruise made those early dreams come true. This is Monaco (Monte Carlo Casino on the far right) at night viewed from the Viking Sea at port.”

Marseille, France

When we visited Marseille for the first time several years ago, it was early December and learning about the Christmas traditions of Provence was our main focus. On this day in summer, we got a feel for the summer vibe of the city as well as another look at familiar beautiful landmarks such as Marseille Cathedral.

Marseille Cathedral seen from the Viking Sea at port during a Mediterranean Odyssey cruise

Marseille Cathedral, France

“And we return to Marseille, France! Mr. TWS and I were here several years ago in the winter and now we have enjoyed it in summer. More pics to come, but for now this was the view of Marseille Cathedral from our stateroom on the Viking Sea while at port.”

Barcelona, Spain

We strolled the Passeig de Gràcia admiring the architecture and design style of Barcelona several years ago. For some reason, Gaudi’s Casa Batlló struck me as being even more beautiful as we passed it on our Viking excursion.

Gaudi architecture on the Block of Discord in Barcelona, Spain on a shore excursion with Viking on a Mediterranean Odyssey cruise

Gaudi on the Block of Discord in Barcelona, Spain

“Gaudi’s Casa Batlló with its colorful facade, mask-like balconies and symbolic features such as the roof that resembles the back of a dragon. The late 19th century building was restored by Gaudi between 1904-1906. This is one of three buildings next to each other on a part of Passeig de Gràcia known as the Block of Discord. On this one block, three competing visions of Modernisme are on view in the early 20th century designs of three prominent architects.”

Stay tuned for more from the trip. We’ll have more destination highlights, personal perspectives, practical information, and tips.

Disclosure: Thanks to Viking Cruises for making our Mediterranean Odyssey possible.

5 Important Things To Do To Prepare For Your Viking Cruise

A bucket-list trip is a perfect way to celebrate major milestones in your life. In my case, it is our 25th wedding anniversary and we have long wanted to take a Viking Ocean Cruise on the Mediterranean. We decided on the Mediterranean Odyssey , a 13-day cruise which visits six countries and includes 10 tours.

Once you book your cruise, there is still quite a bit of planning to do. As an experienced traveler, I am often amazed by how many people arrive on a trip with no clue how everything works because they didn’t read the materials provided prior to the trip. They are disappointed they can’t do a shore excursion or eat at a specialty onboard restaurant because they didn’t reserve it. As an obsessive reader, I delve deep into the options and small print so we won’t miss anything important. To get the most of your voyage, take advantage of all the tools Viking offers to help you get ready for your bucket-list trip. It really will enhance your experience. Here are five important things to do to prepare for your Viking cruise.

1. Review The Viking Website And Put Important Dates On Your Calendar

The first thing you should do is review the Viking Inclusive Value webpage . Read this over and become familiar with all the extras Viking offers as this will be important when you start booking shore excursions, restaurant reservations, and drink packages. For example Viking provides beer and wine with lunch and dinner at no additional charge. This can impact your decision as to whether you wish to purchase a beverage package. They also include a complimentary shore excursion in each port.

Set up your My Viking Journey account. You will need your booking number to register. Once registered, go to the guest information section and fill out the required forms. Also review the Passport and Visa Requirements. A key piece of information here is that your passport must be valid for six months past your travel dates. Good to know! The Visa section will let you know if there are any requirements. Lastly, review the calendar. Each day of your cruise is listed with options to book spa treatments, dining reservations, and shore excursions. Your cabin size will determine when you can book these options. Dates range from 60 to 107 days before your cruise. Note when you can begin booking and that it is very specific including the day and hour in your time zone. Make an appointment with yourself to book these options. Things fill up fast, and you don’t want to miss out.

2. Prepare For Cultural Immersion Opportunities

This is one of my favorite features that Viking offers. Viking Cruises are known as The Thinking Person’s Cruise , and you can see why with all the cultural resources they offer. Begin by going to the itinerary for your cruise on the website. In my case, it is Mediterranean Odyssey and I went to the section on Resources. The first section to check out is filmography, and you can choose by either country or itinerary. There is an extensive list of movies, documentaries, and television shows either filmed in or about your cruise destinations. What a great resource to begin learning about the different countries you will visit and what you might like to see! So many places I have put on my list to tour are based on movies, books, or artwork that I love. Another option is Viking TV , which has a variety of programming. There is a section that is destination-specific and worth checking out.

Viking actually has a Resident Historian Program. It is part of the onboard cultural enrichment program included with your cruise. The historian hosts lectures on the history and culture of the ports you will visit. The Chief Historian has curated an extensive list of books to enjoy prior to your cruise. I was blown away by the selection for the Mediterranean Odyssey itinerary which included everything from Shakespeare to books about the famous artwork travelers have the opportunity to see at port stops. There really is something for everyone.

I love to cook and I found a variety of recipes inspired by Viking Ocean Cruises from the extensive recipe collection on Viking’s website. I feel like food is such an important part of travel and can give you an insight into the local culture. There are quite a few recipes I look forward to trying. Preparing a themed dinner can be a fun way to build excitement for your upcoming cruise. I also love craft cocktails and this homemade limoncello recipe just says Italy to me.

3. Pick Your Shore Excursions

I have to admit I have been obsessing over which shore excursions to pick. To begin, go to your cruise’s itinerary page. Start at Day 1 and click Read More . There will be no shore excursions offered on the first or last day of each cruise. The page is worth visiting for an overview of the port city and some videos. Then work your way through each day and read all the offerings. Some key things to consider with each excursion is the intensity level, which can range from easy to demanding. Read the descriptions of the intensity levels to make sure it is an activity you want to participate in. Viking also assigns flags and icons which further describe the tour. I like that Viking provides excursions that cover a wide variety of fitness levels and interests.

As you look through each day, note what the included shore excursion is. Typically it is either an orientation walking or bus tour of the port of call. For some ports, this will be sufficient for me, especially in the smaller towns where I can walk to all the sites I want to visit. This is where your research in cultural immersion will pay off in helping to decide what you want to do. Viking also does a Kitchen Table excursion which takes place in two parts. In the morning you will travel by mini-coach with the executive chef to visit a local food market to pick out ingredients for an evening meal. In the late afternoon, you will join the culinary team and help to prepare a meal using the local ingredients you helped select earlier. This excursion is offered at multiple ports.

Now make a list and pick two or three selections (this gives you a backup if your first choice is booked) for each day so that you are prepared when sign-up day opens. If you are booked in a suite, you should be able to get all your choices. If you are booked in the different Veranda levels, registration for the majority of the cabins opens up either 60 or 67 days from your cruise. With your list ready you will save time by not having to decide on an excursion. As it gets closer to sign-up day, check to verify which excursions are offered as they are subject to change.

4. Get In Shape

I am very intrigued by some of the shore excursions that involve biking and kayaking. It’s been a while since I have been on a bike, so my training will involve some cycling to build up to the 10 miles I will need to ride. Once you have planned your activities, look at the physical requirements for each. If you’ve never kayaked, try an hour rental to see if you like it. Are there lots of hills or steps on a tour? Taking long walks is a good way to increase your fitness level. If you don’t have hills in your area, look for a stadium where you can walk up and down the stairs. I avoid gaining weight on a cruise by always taking the stairs and not the elevator when on the ship. Don’t underestimate how much walking you will be doing. Often there is a long walk from the pier to the start of your excursion. It has been my experience that I walk 14,000 or more steps when in port.

5. Two Weeks Is A Long Time; Pack Accordingly

When planning what to bring on your cruise, visit Life on Board for the dress code and tips on what to pack. Viking is all about the destination, and on my 13-day cruise, there is only one day at sea. Viking takes this into account with their dress code, which has no formal nights in the evening. Dress is “elegant casual” with no jeans, but the World Cafe is casual in the evening. Look at what shore excursions you are taking and plan accordingly.

Two weeks is a long time to pack for, but Viking offers self-service launderettes on Decks 3 to 6 which are free to use and even have complimentary detergent. Having the option to do some laundry can help lighten your packing list. Some stateroom categories include laundry services, and it is available for a fee through your steward if not included.

Another resource I like to use is reviews. I also read trip reports. Personal experiences give you insights that you won’t receive on the company website. Check out TravelAwaits contributor Judy Freeman’s advice on how to make the most of your Viking cruise . You may want to post on the Viking River Cruise Roll Call - you would most likely garner more information there.

I strongly disagree. General question threads belong in this forum and not the Roll Call forum. The best way to make use of the roll call forum--and one should -- is to find the appropriate roll call(s), read it(them) and then ask specific questions in the roll call. After years of hanging out here, I've decided that people are more apt to respond to a specific question. Also, roll calls have a downside: once people have sailed, they generally do not return to the roll call.

General question threads started in the Roll Call forum have a slim chance of being seen. Once people find the roll call for their cruise, they usually do not return to the roll call forum to look for it.

Plus, a quick scan of the Roll Call forum shows that there are only a couple of single date roll calls for Waterways of Tsars (including one started by the OP), most of which have no replies (which is not unusual for river cruise roll calls) and no one started a 2019 Waterways roll call. Viking might have a couple of ships doing this itinerary but the people on it either aren't interested in roll calls or simply aren't members of Cruise Critic.

I have done Moscow and Leningrad as a land trip (many years ago) and then did the river cruise St. Petersburg to Moscow. I loved the land trip.

I was not a fan of the river cruise and was literally bored with the ports between Moscow and St. Petersburg. Not only that, I yearned for more time in the 2 large cities. In the towns between, we would often get off, visit a montastery and then get back on the ship. Many stops were 3-4 hours. Maybe if I was retired and had all of this extra time in my life but I am not.

I personally would advise to find a land tour that let's you stay in hotels in downtown Moscow and St. Petersburg because we spent so much time in traffic commuting back and fourth to the ship. It was so much better to stay downtown near items.

Sorry - my least favorite cruise. Others probably enjoyed the trip though they had no idea how much we missed in Moscow and St. Petersburg and didn't know any better.

Just returned from this trip, sailing on the Viking Truvor - fantastic cruise!  It was our first river cruise and I loved the river cruising, going through 17 locks as well as open lake cruising (could not see land at times).

We chose a CX room - level two with a large window which opens to allow you fresh air and view of the sail.  Room was as expected in size with plenty of storage space for us.  As we travel light and had spent 4 days in Amsterdam first, loved the speed and luxury of great laundry service.  We did hear engine noise when slowing down for the locks but it did not bother us.

Our program director Olga was a sweetheart and always ready to resolve any issues.  All the staff was friendly and ready to make your wishes happen if possible.  We found the food very nice, particularly the chance to eat Russian foods nearly every day.

My early morning haunt was the Panorama bar - enjoy coffee and the passing scenery.  I was trying to learn a bit of Russian so Alayna and Yana would teach me something new each day.

The walking tours in Moscow and St. Petersburg were well done if a bit slow paced and prepared us to explore on our own the next day - easily done on the metro in Moscow and on the shuttle in St. P.  In Moscow we did visit the State Historical Museum on Red Square and thoroughly enjoyed it - no crowds so we could enjoy the exhibits.  Felt very safe in both cities exploring on our own.

The pace slows down for the five days sailing along the river and visiting smaller towns - each charming and offer something different.  If you want high quality artistic souvenirs I thought the nicest were in Mandrogy where the artists were creating on site.

Can’t say much about vodka (not my drink) but folks enjoyed trying those on board and a tasting was offered one evening.

I am happy to answer any questions - just got in last night so a bit loopy from the 9 hour time zone change!  It was a fabulous trip - Russia is a beautiful country and the ship staff happy and proud to share their country with you.

I am inclined to agree with you on most points with the exception being "least favorite cruise". Although I have enjoyed cruises to Russia (both ocean and river), I usually visit Russia via land rather than cruise. One must obtain a Russian visa for both river cruises/land visits and as traffic in both St. Petersburg and Moscow is complete chaos it is a more effective time saver to stay in the city center of these cities. The cruises do not, imho, offer adequate time to explore St. Petersburg and Moscow and there is much to see in both of these cities.

However, if the OP enjoys the cruising experience with most tours included and is content with just a "taste" of the ports visited, it may be the right choice for him/her.

Thanks

I have done 1 land trip there and 1 river cruise there.

I just hated to getting off the ship for a port between Moscow and St. Petersburg for 2 hours to visit one church and then back on the ship. I would have killed to have had more time in Moscow and St. Petersburg than spend 2 hours in one port for one church.

Both times I did get my Russian Visa.

I loved staying in downtown in both of these cities. So much nicer than the alternative. I did a river cruise because the one year, Moscow was the most expensive city in the world.

I just couldn't believe my "cheap high school trip" did a much better job showing me Moscow and "Leningrad" (at the time) than the river cruise.

I was amazed at how many said "I saw everything in Moscow" when we barely only touched the surface. We missed so much.

10 minutes ago, Coral said: I was amazed at how many said "I saw everything in Moscow" when we barely only touched the surface. We missed so much.

Yes, people often make these claims when visiting historical european cities - makes me inwardly smile. I have spent months in Italy during my lifetime, love Rome and usually spend 5 day to a week (or more) in this fabulous city. I still haven't "seen it all" as archaeological sites are uncovered on a regular basis.

I have friends that live in Russia with whom I stay so I usually spend upwards of 2-3 weeks at a time. Still haven't "seen it all" and never will.

We cruised the Danube last October-November. Same issue as you - with short tours in some of the towns along the river. In the larger cities (Vienna, Budapest) we actually ditched the included tours and DIY - saw much more on our own and spent an additional week post cruise in Budapest and an additional week pre in Munich. We enjoy a more indepth visit but recognize that our style doesn't appeal to all.

No cruise – ocean or river – gives you an in-depth stay in any major city.  If you want to really explore Paris, taking an ocean cruise that stops at Le Havre for a day isn't the way to do it.  Yet more and more people keep cruising every year: because the cruise is an experience in itself as well as providing introductory visits to many different cities and towns along the way.  IMHO you can't compare cruising with land visits and say that one is better than the other [except in your opinion, for you].  Many people will find that a river cruise from Moscow to St. Petersburg is all the Russia they will ever need.

When river cruisers used to stay in hotels in Moscow and St. Petersburg it was much better. The locations where they dock are pretty far (like staying in La Harve) and people still complain about it. Again - it is important to let people know because the cruise lines will not.

I have had so many people from this board email me that they were bored with the ports between Moscow and St. Petersburg and they wished they had not done a river cruise as the days between were a waste. I completely agree with them and am letting others know. I don't like to waste my vacation days on poor ports and I doubt others do either. I wish others had let me know before I had done mine. River cruise section on CC was not as active back then.

I think there are great places to cruise - I just don't think Russia river cruises are one of them. Also, if you look, there are far less river cruises in Russia now compared to previously. Many lines who used to be in Russia are no longer there. It has more to do than just politics. It just isn't a good match.

franski

Well, I am going to offer an alternative view...  we loved our cruise in Russia.  We enjoy the experience of being on the rivers - so did not feel this was a "waste" of our vacation days.  Yes, the stops between Moscow & SP were often short, but we enjoyed seeing life along the river banks.

I do agree that the travel time in both Moscow & SP was pretty brutal - but, that is life in Russia.  I do not complain about traffic nearly as much since returning from this trip!!  I am not sure that the docking spaces in SP or Moscow are not as far away from the city as Le Havre is from Paris - I think it is more the congestion of the traffic that causes the increased travel time.  But - if I am wrong - I am sure someone here will correct me....

In Moscow, the Metro was quite close (ie: very walkable) to the area where the boats dock.   So - lots of options for self touring on the "free" day.  Not everyone is comfortable touring on their own in a country where you don't speak the language - so It is rather presumptuous (IMHO) to say it was "much better" when the tour included hotel stays.  Most hotel stays result in having to do some meals on your own - so, another expense on top of what can be a fairly pricey vacation.

I am glad that there are people who can offer an alternative view of cruising (ie: what is good, what may be a disappointment....) - but, just like opinions on which company is "best" (or worst) - these are opinions that may not mesh with people's expectations or priorities.

To the OP - we did not do Russia with Viking - we did it with Uniworld.  But, the decision for Uniworld over Viking was entirely cost related.  We were looking at both lines - and Uniworld had the better price.  The itinerary itself was almost identical.   We chose to end in Moscow - as we had a free day there and felt it would be nice to relax a bit before flying home.  We booked a private tour in Moscow as we wanted to go to the Flea Market at Ishmaylova (? sp) - and it was handy to have a guide that spoke the language!!

So - if you want to see Russia, this is a good way to have a "taste" of what the country has to offer.  Of course you won't see everything - but I somehow doubt you expect to.

We did this trip, Moscow to St. Petersburg with AMA 10 years ago and loved it!  We did enjoy seeing the small cities along the way and saw a bit of what life was in those towns.  We did not find them boring and enjoyed going into the church in each town.  So very different from ours and so beautiful even in the small towns.  Yes extra time would have been nice but we read the itinerary and knew what to expect.  I find river cruising very relaxing and would do it again in a heartbeat.

We completely agree with Coral. We thought this trip was a waste of money and time.

Absolutely love Moscow and St. Petersburg but would never recommend this river cruise to anyone.

CaribbeanIsland

We also did the Russian river cruise and thought it was a waste of time and money. We saw so little in Moscow and St. Petersburg due to the awful traffic. We heard many lines dropped this itinerary due to poor reviews.

We did go back and stayed in hotels in Moscow and St. Petersburg and had a great time. We saw much more in the same amount of time just by staying downtown in hotels.

No desire to go back to the ports along the Volga. Wished we had missed them the first time.

I would love this trip as I love small towns .We would spend time on both ends in the big cities and the small towns would be a nice change . Hoping to do this trip in the future.

Well, part of the problem is that you haven't really visited too many ports along the Volga in the first place - only a tiny portion of Moscow to SPB route runs along the Volga. It's due to tricky marketing games, of course, but still, calling Moscow-Spb a Volga cruise is almost as misleading as calling it The Waterways of the Tsars.

I've taken two Volga cruises (Moscow to Astrakhan and Kazan to Astrakhan) - and it's a totally different river experience.

You don't spend that much time in the small towns. You get off --visit the church and then get back on the ship. In one town, there was only a church. I think some ports we got off for 2-3 hours and that was it. Most of the time between the 2 cities is spent on the ship. And the ships are not up to what other river cruise ships have.

Exactly - I agree. The trip was flawed. There were no times listed for the ports on the cruise I was on. It is difficult to study the details when none are provided.

Thank you all for your views. We will post a trip report once back in the USA, about October 1st. Keep your ideas coming. has anyone gone to VDNKh? Would like to hear about your experiences

Yes, VdNKh is totally worth it, maybe a little less accommodating weather-wise in September...

In addition to the usual suspects (Moskvarium, fountains, Mukhina's statue, Space museum and Cosmos pavilion, national pavilions, etc) they now have a pretty cool scale model of Moscow - not nearly as fun, interactive, or tongue-in-cheek as Grandmaket in SPB, but worth a visit - and it's free, too.

Actually, most exhibitions that usually cost money are free between 11am and 4 pm (I think) on weekdays, but it might be a summer thing.

Weather permitting, it's a full day kind of trip. You might benefit from renting a bike or a scooter.

Where did you book those?

I love being on a river and watch the landscape float by. I don't mind when the ship stops just for a few hours at a small town. It looks like many contributors here see it as a waste of time and would prefer a more extensive visit to Moscow and St. Petersburg.

Count me as one who enjoyed the time on the river during our Viking River Cruise. Moscow and St. Petersburg were fascinating, but it was wonderful to escape the traffic and sail through the beautiful countryside. The small towns/cities we stopped in were very interesting and the lunch we had in a family's home was so memorable.

Moscow Day Trip

Cool Cruiser

We're extremely interested in a cruise next summer on the Soujourn which stops in St. Petersburg for almost three days. Seabourn lists two different "day trips" to Moscow via high speed train. Having previously cruised to St. Petersburg, we really don't want to stay there for three days and a side trip to Moscow would be the highlight of the cruise. Has anyone taken this excursion?

I have been to Moscow many times, but never as part of a cruise. Was recently on a Baltics cruise and spoke to people who had - it takes it out of them as it was a super long day. In fact they got home so late that third day they slept in and had "sea day" at port.

There is so much to see in Moscow, I it should be a land trip and there are many nice hotels on which you can stay. It is really a 3 day experience. Having said that, if there is not much else you want to see in St Petersburg, and you don't think you will get back to Russia by land, it is a very interesting city with much to do. You will skim the surface, but will enjoy. I would only do if you had limited or no plans in St Petersburg - especially the day after as you return very late at night.

If you do not go, there are many not so well known things to do in SP. The Russian Museum is fascinating for example as is Yuspov Palace. The military museums and sights are interesting as well.

Whatever you decide to do you will have a great time!

Doing a "day-trip" from St. Petersburg to Moscow and back can work well. We did that trip in 2008 with Crystal. Having sailed in the Greek Islands in 2006 with Seabourn on our first cruise, I am sure that the quality would be similar with your cruise line. One change now would be the use of the high-speed train in place of flying back and forth as we did in 2008. Here are more details to consider:

Having three days in St. Petersburg allows enough time to do BOTH in seeing Moscow and going to other places near where your ship is docked. Only a few of the better lines, such as Seabourn and Crystal, have that type of schedule. We used in 2008 the main schedule airline, Rossiya Russian Airlines, for this trip. That line is now part of Aeroflot. The train trip takes long, but lessens some of the added time needed going out to the airport and the train gets you closer to the central part of Moscow.

I'll offer up some added background, along with various pro/con factors for your consideration. My wife thought it was lots of money, but she viewed it as very much worth it after completing the trip as a "once in a lifetime" experience.

CON FACTORS : It's a long day! Leave the ship about 8 am (greeted by a small welcoming band dockside); lots of driving and traffic; get back by return flight to the St. Petersburg airport around midnight and back to the ship a little before 1 am. The cost through Crystal Cruises was not cheap, but it does include everything, including all bus transfers, your jet air flights on regularly schedule commercial airlines, lunch on the bus, dinner in a nice/historic club/restaurant, admissions, etc., etc. Moscow is a super large city of about ten million people. There has been huge growth in the suburbs of this city during the past decades or so. Traffic and time from the airport to the main downtown takes about an hour. You can get a good feel as you travel into town through the coach windows about the “new Moscow” with its suburban growth, commerce, advertising, capitalism, etc.

PRO FACTORS : Moscow has its unique history, sights and sites, from Ivan the Terrible up through Lenin, Stalin and the new Russian leaders of today. After a long ride in from the airport on the outer edge of this large metro areas of 17.3 million (with 10.5 million in the city), we stopped at a new hotel for coffee/tea/break. Then, we rode the Moscow subway and saw a couple of their very unique and artistic stations. Stalin at the time called these stations “People’s Palaces”. This Moscow Metro was first opened in 1935 and now has 182 stations, 12 different lines,187 miles of routes and carries seven million passengers each weekday. It’s the world second busiest subway system. This subway ride offered a good sampling of real life for people who live and work in Moscow. We then saw more key places enroute, including the home of the Bolshoy Ballet, KGB Headquarters, various Stalin era buildings, etc. Then we went to the Kremlin with its 19 historic towers. WOW, we were really there!

Inside the Kremlin are three key “super stars”. First, was the State Armoury with its spectacular Faberge Eggs, plus so many carriages, crowns, gowns, jewels, etc. Second are the various historic Cathedrals within the Kremlin Walls, plus the Tower Bells, Icon art, etc. This includes the Cathedral of the Annunciation built in the 1480’s and having such spectacular wall murals and icons. Third, was the Great Kremlin Palace with its spectacular reception halls, inlaid wood floors, gold and more gold, fancy ceilings, etc. The Czars were crowned here, plus the current heads of the Russian government, etc. You might check whether your cruise trip will take you insider here. The size and scale of these areas are hard to describe in words, let alone reflect and capture the history that has happened in some of these rooms dating back to the late 1400’s. We have seen lots of great palaces all over Europe, but this is something above and beyond for the eyes, heart and brain.

Then, we saw more building inside the walls of the Kremlin. We went outside of the Kremlin Walls and walked next door to adjoining Red Square, seeing St. Basil’s and the re-done Gum Department Store. Red Square is so historic, especially having grown up seeing the military May Day parades there, visuals of Lenin’s Tomb, etc. Have the words “spectacular” and historic been used too much? Maybe, but it fits for many of these unique places. St. Basil’s was built 1555–1561 on the order of Ivan IV (the Terrible). It was the tallest building in Moscow until the completion of the Ivan the Great Bell Tower (266 feet tall) in 1600 inside the Kremlin Walls. To be able to “CONTRAST” and compare Moscow and St. Petersburg during these three short days adds to the benefits of seeing both of these great Russian capital cities. Each is a very different and special city.

We finished with dinner in the Central Writers’ Club, a one hundred years old mansion made into a restaurant with crystal chandeliers, rich wood panelling, fireplaces, and antique balustrades. Finally, we drove back to the airport, passing many of the new suburban commercial development with big box stores and luxury housing, etc.

Is one day too short and limited? YES! You can, however, do and see lots in only that one short day. You get a small sampling above. How often do you get to Russia? The Cold War might not come back in full force, but there are going to be increasing and revisited tensions in future years involving Russia and getting access there. The major cruise lines have done this tour many times and has its details down well and timing perfected. Let me know any questions, thoughts or reactions.

Here are a few picture highlights of what we saw in Moscow. Have more to share, if you would like added views for the great potentials there.

Walking on the famed Red Square of Moscow:

This is the interior for Moscow's most historic church, Assumption Cathedral or the Cathedral of the Dormition, inside the Kremlin walls. It is the mother church of Muscovite Russia. The church stands on Cathedral Square and was built in 1475–1479 by the Italian architect Aristotele Fioravanti. It was erected on the spot of an older 14th century cathedral of the same name:

The famed KGB Headquarters in Moscow where many entered and did not exit (alive) during the 1950’s and 1960’s:

Kazan Cathedral sits on the northeast corner of Red Square in Moscow. The current building is a reconstruction of the original church which was destroyed at the direction of Joseph Stalin in 1936. The original church was erected as a shrine in the early 1630s to mark the city's liberation from the Polish aggressors. After the Soviet Union’s fall, this was the first church to be completely rebuilt. The cathedral's restoration (1990–1993) was based on the detailed measurements and photographs of the original church:

Here is a small sampling of the Kremlin Royal Treasures of the Czars: Eggs & Jewels:

St. Basil's sits on Red Square and dates back to its 1555-61 construction on the orders of Ivan the Terrible (Ivan IV). It commemorates the capture of Kazan and Astrakhan and marks the geometric center of the city. This location has been the hub of its growth for Moscow since the 14th century. It was the tallest building in Moscow until the completion of the Ivan the Great Bell Tower in 1600. This church was near destroyed in the 1930’s when Stalin was in control.:

We did it with Regent several years ago. We were also docked in St Petersburg for 3 days. We flew to Moscow though. Not sure how long the high speed train takes, but until you get to the airport, through security and your flight leaves it may be the same. It was a great day. I wouldn't have wanted to miss it. We got back about 11 and they had a special dinner waiting for those of us on this excursion. Really did get to see the highlights of Moscow as well as a fabulous lunch.

I did the day trip to Moscow several years ago with Seabourn. Normally, I would never undertake such a grueling day but it was my third time in St. Petersburg and I had seen everything I wanted so I thought why not? It turned out to be a highlight of the trip. Yes, it was a long day but who cares. The day is just as long if you stay on board. Seabourn handled the whole thing extremely well from the flights to the guides to the meals to the private sightseeing. We saw and experienced so much in that one day that I felt I had been there for two or three. Is it better to go and spend a few days? Of course! But if that is not an option and you're not sure if you'll ever get there on your own I think it's a great thing to do.

Everything I said though is only for those who have been to St. Petersburg before. If it's your first time you'll need every minute of those three days there to see even a fraction of what there is to see.

Thaks for all the great information. We will be on the Sojourn late next summer in the Baltic. We have been to St Petersburg and are thinking we might do this if offered. Sounds great, hope we get the chance!

I can't thank you all enough for your quick and in depth responses. As much as I would like to take an extended tour of Moscow/Russia someday, I've learned that you never know what the future holds and not to let a good opportuity pass you by. The overall positive reviews and amazing pictures have sold us. While I realize we might be exhausted from the long day, it sounds well worth it.

Glad we have helped to "SELL YOU". You are summarizing and approaching things correctly. See "IT" while you can and are close. Here are a few more pictures to help you get ready for the amazing sights you will experience there in Moscow.

Like you, we did the Moscow trip after a couple of trips to St Petersburg. Wouldn't have missed it for the world- totally different feel from SP, or anywhere else in the world. For those of us who lived through the cold war, it brought to life the spy novels I have read all my life.

Could you please send more information on your Moscow trips - we would like to do a seperate trip to Moscow after the cruise. Any leads or information would be appreciated.

We were on the Sojourn July/August 2012. We did a private day trip to Moscow using SPB tours via high speed train on our 2nd day in ST P. They picked us up from the ship around 5:30 am and dropped us off at the rail station, and we met our tour guide and a driver for the two of us at the Moscow rail station. It took 4 hours each way for the train, but it went from city center to city center, and it seemed to go by relatively quickly. We had a great time in Moscow- seeing the highlights as described on the tour itinerary, and we could customize it. There seemed to be little English spoken in Moscow, people not as friendly as in St P, and the traffic was horrible. I was actually glad to get back to St P( at around midnight).

It was a busy day, but that didn't stop us from a full day of touring before and after the Moscow trip on private tours by SPB tours. It was quite expensive, but I'm glad we went- and I really have no desire to go back.

Years ago we did a land tour of Russia, so got to spend about 5 days in both Moscow and St Petersburg. I actually like Moscow more than St Petersburg. We have also done a Baltic cruise on Seabourn, so have had another 3 days in St Petersburg, so NEXT time we will certainly do the day tour to Moscow. I would also prefer to do it the way they do now, by train, would have been dubious about a Russian "domestic" flight. ;)

I could've sworn I'd responded to this thread earlier:confused:

I'd take my chances on a domestic flight with their new fancy Boeing planes (or even an odd Ilyushin). The train was a less than stellar experience. Four hours each way in a straight backed non reclining seat. Some of them had another passenger about 24" in front of you, facing you - so no sticking your legs out. Further they didn't seem to believe in AC so the car just got hotter and hotter. Moscow itself was great, I found it particularly amusing that right across from Red Square they had a capitalist pig-dog mall filled with luxury American and European brands.

Following is a description and personal review of the Seabourn Cruise - St. Petersburg -shore excursion: “MOSCOW BY TRAIN & THE MYSTERIOUS KREMLIN”

On June 18, 2012 – my wife and I participated in the Seabourn Pride’s Moscow Excursion along with 12 other passengers and 2 guides. Most of us had room service breakfast at 4:30am, crossed the flooded river outside Russian Customs and met the bus @ 5:30am for a transfer to the St. Petersburg Train Station. The high speed train (mostly at 130-140 MPH) left the station at 6:30am and arrived in Moscow at 10:15am. The train ride was uneventful and a box snack was provided.

In Moscow, we were met by the local guide and a full size bus. We drove into and around central Moscow for about 30 min. – buildings and sights are interesting, but do not compare to the historical & decorative buildings of St. Petersburg. We then took a Metro (subway) ride in Moscow. The metro is interesting, but not as impressive as St. Petersburg’s. (You will notice that throughout this review, I state that St. Petersburg is better than Moscow, which is true of everything except for the Kremlin, which holds its own and should be the main purpose of this excursion.) (Seabourn states that the Kremlin is closed on Thursday – THEREFORE, DO NOT TAKE THIS TOUR ON THURSDAY.)

After driving around Moscow again to view several areas from the bus, we visited the Kremlin , which is a very large wall enclosed fortress with hundreds of buildings, churches, monuments, fortress walls with many towers/etc. After a long walk (many long walks to come) at an OLYMPIC SPEED PACE (You will walk fast to see everything in the allotted time). We started with the “Armory” museum which was very good and I do not normally like museums. There are rooms with royalty gowns, Czars’ crowns, royalty carriages, suits of amour and weapons, jewel covered bibles, Faberge Eggs, etc. – basically Royal Treasures. From here we walked to the “Churches Square” with It’s 17 churches. We entered the Annunciation Cathedral where most all the Czars were crowned. Outside - took pictures of the largest BELL in the world that has never been rung and the largest CANNON that has never been fired. Took pictures of government buildings and the President’s Palace.

At about 1:45pm, we walked back to the bus for a short ride to a very prestigious restaurant (and it was) for a four course late-lunch with an excellent French Bordeaux.

After lunch, we visited the very large Red Square @ 3:15pm for a tour of “St. Basil’s Cathedral” which was beautiful and very interesting with its many Onion Domes – but I liked St. Petersburg’s “Church on the Spilled Blood” better. We were able to see the front of the Lenin’s Tomb , but it was closed. At the other end of the Square was a beautiful museum and very nice smaller church where recorded services were being played.

We had 45 min. on our own to walk around the Square and after another long fast walk back to our bus, we proceeded to the train station for a 7:45pm departure back to St. Petersburg. A snack and drink was provided. Arriving in St. Petersburg at 11:30pm, with the sun just beginning to set (the mid-night sun), we proceeded to the ship – 18 hour tour/ 21 hour day.

Summary: Is the tour worth $1,000 per person – only if it is important to see Moscow once in your lifetime. See St. Petersburg first ; tour has extensive walking at a very fast pace; you will be going to Moscow to see the Kremlin which is historical and beautiful.
