IDEX Biometrics (NASDAQ:IDBA) has worked through 2021 with little to show for revenues other than mostly sales to Bloomberg, but just recently a flurry of news has landed. Today the company announced that China UnionPay certified its partner Hengbao’s latest biometric smart card. China UnionPay is the largest payment network in the world, with 9.4 billion cards in circulation. Last week both VISA and Mastercard fully certified IDEMIA Group's F.CODETM biometric smart card platform, that uses IDEX's TrustedBio® fingerprint authentication solution. IDEMIA is one of the top two largest card makers in the world and after this certification, it placed a mass production order with IDEX for its TrustedBio fingerprint sensor. IDEMIA uses IDEX in its F.CODE payment card. This was the largest production order for TrustedBio to date and represents a material increase to backlog. Deliveries against this new order are scheduled to begin shipping in Q1 2022. These certifications are what many bank customers have been waiting for, and now they will start to announce pilots and rollouts of fingerprint cards.

According to the Nilson Report, VISA currently has approximately 3.6 billion cards in circulation and is expected to grow that by 18% by 2026, while Mastercard has about 2.5 billion cards in current circulation, with growth of 29% expected over the same time period.

There are five billion smart cards issued per year worldwide, of which three billion are payment cards and 1.9 billion of them are contactless. The market for contactless cards is growing 8% per year. It is expected that 18% of the market will be using biometric cards by 2025 or 500 million cards. IDEX is one of only two fingerprint solution providers for this market and it believes it has the superior solution due to among other things, its cost and ability to do transactions in half a second. In the future, when Asian manufacturers may enter the market, IDEX believes it will be protected, as Western banks would not be inclined to trust their cards to those low cost providers.

The outlook in China is also gaining steam and IDEX expects rollouts late in 2022. IDEX is the sole supplier for the sensors to be used in the e-CNY wallet tests at the Olympics in February 2022, but given that it is November and we are not sure any orders have been placed, the trial is looking to be less than robust. During the third quarter, IDEX announced a design win with Union Smart Card for a cold wallet card in collaboration with the six state-owned banks. This product, with a screen and a keyboard, is an alternative to mobile wallets on smartphones. A physical card is a must with digital currency as evidenced by the recent Coinbase hacks. The fingerprint card, which is never connected to the Internet, can give an extra layer of security to any transaction that originates from a phone. China is also testing adding more applications using these digital wallets including paying for transit and health records.

Zwipe has also announced a number of customers all of whom will result in orders for IDEX. Redeye is predicting Zwipe will generate US$7.6 million in 2022 ramping to $54 million in 2023. We believe that at least 25% of Zwipe’s cost of goods sold will go to IDEX, so on $54 million, at Redeye’s 28% gross margin estimate that would be between $10 and $15 million in sales to IDEX. It recently announced it was under evaluation by a Global Tier 1 Smartcard Manufacturer; it received two commercial orders from Beautiful Cards Corporation and Inkript, and it has also announced pilots with MEPS, Reltime, Credit Lebanaise, and a Global Tier-1 Bank.

Progress has accelerated recently and production ramp forecasts are now supported by orders coming in. Investors must also be aware that given its cash burn the company will need to do a capital raise soon. We expect that to happen before year-end. Clearly management was waiting for the Mastercard and VISA certification and the IDEMIA order before launching its efforts. The company is still burning about $5.5-6.5 million a quarter and had $12.9 million in cash on September 30, 2021.

Q3 Earnings Results

In Q3 of 2021 the company generated $732,000 in revenues sequentially up again from $697,000 in Q2 and compared to $248,000 in Q3 2020. Product sales were $731,000 in Q3 2021 compared to $246,000 in 2020, again reflecting primarily production shipments to Bloomberg as well as an increasing ramp of sample and pilot shipments to card manufacturers. The majority of sales were still to Bloomberg for its new keyboards against its $6 million minimum contract.

Q3 sales yielded a gross margin of 59.0% versus 81.9% due to product mix. Operating expenses increased to $7.9 million in Q3 2021 versus $7.0 million in Q3 2020. Payroll costs increased $769,000 while other expense increased $359,000. R&D spending was again down from last year, this time by $271,000. The company believes expenses will start to decline as a percentage of sales and possible only increase slightly as far as marketing costs, but the big R&D spending is behind them. This year the company received government grants of $134,000 versus only $12,000 last year. Other income increased primarily due to the costs associated with being listed on NASDAQ.

The operating loss and net loss for the quarter were $7.5 million compared to a loss of $6.8 million last year. The non-GAAP loss was $6.9 million versus $5.1 million, an increase of $1.8 million. The non-GAAP loss takes out stock-based compensation.

GAAP loss per share was $0.008 versus $0.009, and non-GAAP was a loss of $0.007 versus a loss of $0.006. The share count increased 14.5% to 902 million average primary shares and 923 million fully diluted.

GAAP loss per ADS was $0.62 versus a loss of $0.65 last year. The non-GAAP loss per ADS was $0.56 versus a loss of $0.46. EBITDA loss in this quarter was $6.5 million compared to $5.3 million in Q3 2020. Cash flow (not including changes in working capital) was a negative $6.5 million compared to a negative $5.3 million. Free cash flow was a negative $6.3 million compared to a negative $5.4 million.

Balance Sheet

At the end of September IDEX had $12.9 million in cash, $13.7 million in working capital and no debt. It is still burning about $5.5-6.5 million a quarter.

As of November 2nd, the company had 919.5 primary shares outstanding or 12.3 million ADSs.

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

Moscow subways are very clean

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

3. Arbatskaya Metro Station served as a shelter during the Soviet-era. It is one of the largest and the deepest metro stations in Moscow.

4. Biblioteka Imeni Lenina Metro Station was built in 1935 and named after the Russian State Library. It is located near the library and has a big mosaic portrait of Lenin and yellow ceramic tiles on the track walls.

5. Kievskaya Metro Station was one of the first to be completed in Moscow. Named after the capital city of Ukraine by Kiev-born, Nikita Khruschev, Stalin's successor.

6. Novoslobodskaya Metro Station  was built in 1952. It has 32 stained glass murals with brass borders.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.

8. Mayakovskaya Metro Station built in 1938. It was named after Russian poet Vladmir Mayakovsky. This is one of the most beautiful metro stations in the world with 34 mosaics painted by Alexander Deyneka.

9. Belorusskaya Metro Station is named after the people of Belarus. In the picture below, there are statues of 3 members of the Partisan Resistance in Belarus during World War II. The statues were sculpted by Sergei Orlov, S. Rabinovich and I. Slonim.

10. Teatralnaya Metro Station (Theatre Metro Station) is located near the Bolshoi Theatre.

I'm a larger, athletic guy (6'2", 260lbs powerlifter) and I found the seats incredibly uncomfortable with minimal leg room, especially in a window seat. Now, I full understand that being smaller may change my view but even if I was 80lbs less, my legs would be the same size and I was sandwiched between my seat and the seat in front of me.

Horrible. This was not first class. This was a connecting flight whi h was late. My original flight never came. I hated the fact that delta gave me a connecting flight from New York to Orlando Florida. No meals and the television screens were not working. There wasn't even any power to charge your phones. This is NOT FIRST CLASS DELTA!!! Do better next time!

This flight was ridiculous. I had to have a connecting flight from New York to orlando Florida??? The flight left late and because it was a short flight there was no first class amenities. I had one alcohol drink. The flight crew was fine, but it sure did not feel like first class. Delta to me dropped the ball by giving me a connecting flight. By the time we got to Raleigh we would have missed the next flight. Lucky for me the flight never came so now I was stuck waiting for a later flight that came in late also.

Our flight was delayed in Atlanta. The staff could have gave us an explanation for the delay and how long it would be.

I liked the ease of checking in, luggage check in, wheel chair assistance, boarding and flight.

On my way home I had a layover. The flight from ATL to CLT was amended 5x while I was waiting. I could have driven home sooner. Overall from Dallas, Tx to Charlotte, NC I started my trip at 4:30pm, I didn’t get home until past midnight. I know things happen, but 5x to make me run back and forth in an airport from different terminals is excessive. I also upgraded to comfort + , I didn’t feel it was worth it. There was no benefit

They did a fine job. Can't wait to use Delta in the future.

There was a loud squeaky sound the whole time we were flying.

Had a broken tray in business class. Crew just shrugged it off.

Due to one crew member not showing up to work, our flight was significantly delayed causing us to miss our connecting flight in Houston to Mississippi causing us to be delayed by more than 6 hours and missing our event all together. Very disappointing. All because ONE crew member called in sick. United did grant us a $15 meal voucher, which was a small but appreciated concession that I wasn’t able to use because I ordered my lunch and paid for it before applying the concession, and the staff said it was too late to use it. Ugh! We also had a TWO delay coming back from Mississippi, but that was on American Airlines and it was due to weather, so not their fault. Anyway, not at all impressed with United’s handling of our flight and the HUGE disappointment of missing our important family event for our 90 year old mother. All that money and all that stress and emotions for nothing. Having to wait the hour to bring an employee from LAX seemed like something that should not have happened. Why don’t you have a local back-up? Santa Ana is not a little airport in a rural area.

Flight delayed from Cape Town to Washington then got diverted to miami and in miami we had to fend for ourselves , im still trying to get to Shreveport now

I just wrote a text which was supposed to be for the flight from Denver to spokane not Frankfurt to Denver.

On time every leg of the journey and exceptional staff at counter, gate, and on board. I haven’t travelled in US for a long time and was genuinely surprised how pleasant this was.

Hated every minute of it. This flight should have only taken 1.5hrs but was delayed over 10hours. Now I am being told I cannot be compensated or refunded my ticket price or extra leg room, which I purchased but did not receive, because the airline is throwing the blame on the 3rd party I purchased tickets through and 3rd party putting the blame on airline. No one wants to help. They received their money and that's all they care about. Im going on 3 days of still trying to get to my final destination, had to cancel car rental, car insurance and hotel. Currently staying in airport until hotels open up. Thank you Lufthansa, Kayak, Underpricer and United for making this trip the worst ever.

The delays (5 hrs) were a comedy of errors, and the multiple safety issues encountered were very concerning.

Crew was great and did their best to make us comfortable and captain came out at the beginning to announce why the flight was delayed, weather situation up ahead, and kept us updated throughout the flight.

the flight from Tampa departed with a delay. The food on board was poor, usually on international airlines alcoholic beverages are offered free of charge , but here it was for a fee, the cutlery was wooden, there were no hot drinks (tea, coffee). Unfortunately, I didn't take pictures of the portions of food, but it wouldn't have been enough for a child either.And in the future, I will try not to use the services of this airline

Just get Economy Plus for international flights, so worth it the extra room, bigger seats…

This flight is frequently delayed. The connections seemingly are more frequently delayed. I’ve missed connections as a result twice on the same route to charlotte then Charleston. Final destination arrival has been the next day, twice in a row. No pilots, no crew. Too many excuses. Unfortunately, my days with American are over.

Entertainment was okay not because anything was wrong but it is a short flight so having no wifi is annoying but understandable. Crew was outstanding as usual

It was spectacular. I had basic Economy and was given so much space and their seats lean back so far. Staff was superb, food was superb, everything was superb, Finnair is Fantastic.

Those seats were way too narrow. I had the middle seat, one person was a very skinny person and we still couldn’t avoid touching each other anytime one of us moved. The other person was larger and we were basically sitting in each others lap the entire flight. There was zero entertainment. The flight was long enough to justify tvs, but no. Gotta sit there in your infant seat and twiddle your thumbs.

The Flight attendant had an attitude and didn't allow anyone any time to prepare for landing despite being absent throughout the entire trip

Flight boarded without pilots. Sat on plane for 3 hrs. after over an hour late boarding. Plane never took off. Had to deplane near midnight. Line for rebooking was 3 hours + long. I had to leave.

The flight was great but board was a nightmare. The gate was changed 4 times during the layover period

The experience was great and much better than the flight going out. of course I was in first class but the service was excellent

Spirit canceled the flight in March and never notified me!

I do not like the customer service, I had an emergency and needed to cancel a pet reservation right after I had booked it and they would not do anything but issue a credit. I haven't flown in years as I have 7 kids and don't have spare time. I want my $125 back on my card please

Spirit airline tries to screw you at every opportunity. Spirit wanted 65$ for an extra pound in the suitcase Made me open the suitcase at the counter to remove 1 pound. Staff very cold and rude Will never fly spirit again and will recommend same to family and friends

Delayed..4 times...completely disorganized boarding. After 5 hours they scrambled to move ppl off plane bc they overbooked. Then they didn't have a cabin crew. WiFi on plane didn't work. Zero amenities. Once we boarded we sat on tarmac for an hour. Explore all alternate options including purchasing a pair of hiking boots and walking to your destination instead of flying spirit.

what I like about Spirit is that the pilot and crew are good communicators. The plane itself - well, its a budget airline and you get what is expected, But I generally just feel safer, somehow, when I know more about what is going on - and Spirit has always done a good job of telling me what is going on: why the delay, why the turbulence, why this and that... and that means a lot to me.

The crew was courteous and are very well prepared for the job.

I paid just under 200 for flight and luggage, then paid 200 to change the flight, then paid 100 for a carry on. Then the cancelled the flight. Of the 500 I spent they refunded 250. I bought a delta flight for 270 never flew with spirit, but spirit kept 250, not even refunding the 100 for the carry on though they cancelled the flight (for weather on a day with only a slight rain ).

Flight attendants heavily pushed their affinity credit card. Very annoying

I purchased a carry on bag online…was supposed to cost $72 but after a whole slew of bs charges, the total was over $175.00. Because of these hidden charges, I will not even consider flying Frontier ever again. It’s just not worth the hassle. I’m scratching this company off my list forever.

Flight was OK. Seats were good no cell phone charges on the plane no TVs or entertainment.

There were 3 leg for the trip and each leg was delayed by 90 minutes or more. The boarding process takes forever with people waiting on the jetway even though most folks do not have carry-on. The whole process is poorly managed.

Flight cancelled and was told by a rude gate agent that they don’t accommodate on other airlines. Had to wait 5 hours for a connecting flight that had a 7 hour layover. Would not allow bags to be checked early so we couldn’t go through security .Had to rent a car for the afternoon to store bags and get a meal. Also incurred a hotel fee. No apology or reason given for the cancellation- just rudeness.

They cancelled the flight then did nothing to help us rebook. It was awful - I won’t fly with them again

The process of buying the ticket and navigating all the hidden charges that Frontier throws at you was a terrible experience. The actual airport experience and flying was fine.

The truck that was refueling the plane drove away with the hose still connected to the plane and ripped part of the plane off with it

If you don’t check in 24 hours in advance, they will charge you $110 to check your bag instead of the $30. I did not get an email with this information and did not check in. In addition, my flight home was cancelled at layover and I had to spend the night in the airport, and then have another layover at another airport before making it home. Will not fly frontier again.
