Indian Association of Tour Operators (IATO) :- Over the year the functions of the travel companies have increased considerably. The travel agencies are no more acting as middlemen between the vendors and tourists. They are specialized in one product line i.e. tour packaging. Today, they are the manufacturers of tourism products and are commonly known as ‘ tour operators ‘.
Tour operators have their own price tag for earning a profit and has developed several tour promotional programs.
However, to encourage, assist, and to protect the interests of tour operators, the Indian Association of Tour Operators (IATO) was formed in 1982 . IATO was established in 1982 at the national capital Delhi . The association is the representative body of tour operators.
IATO promotes, develops, and helps the members to maintain and set up high ethical standards in the industry. It has been playing a very significant role in the promotion and development of inbound tourism .
The IATO has taken many steps which are necessary for promoting, assisting and encouraging the development of travel and tourism throughout the country and has also taken an initiative to secure the welfare of tourism business in all respects.
The association has promoted an equal opportunity for all visitors to enjoy the travel facilities without the distinction of race, color, creed, and nationality.
Objectives and Aims of IATO
IATO is a large tourism organization in India. It is the association of tour operators. IATO helps in the development and promotion of travel and tourism in India. The main objectives of IATO are:
- To promote national integration, international welfare, and goodwill.
- To take necessary steps in the promotion, encouragements, and development of tourism in the country.
- To develop, promote, and encourage friendly feelings among the tour operators and travel agents/agencies.
- To protect the interest of the members.
- To set up and maintain high ethical standards.
- To settle the disputes of the members.
- To communicate and negotiate with chambers of commerce, IATA , DoT, Ministry of Tourism, and other organizations in other countries.
- To organize the promotional tour with DoT, Airlines, and International Tourism bodies.
- To institute awards for excellence in the travel trade.
- To assist students with the scholarship to pursue higher education or research for the development of tourism.
- To undertake such welfare activities as the members cannot take individually.
- To print and publish information material for the benefit of members.
IATO Membership
The membership of the association is open to all tourism and travel organizations in India and abroad if they have:
- Good professional reputation.
- Sound financial position.
- At least two years in the travel business.
- Recognized by DoT.
Other terms and conditions imposed by the association from time to time.

To become a member of the IATO, organizations must apply on the prescribed form and must be proposed and seconded by the members of the association, of which one must be an active member. The application shall be considered by the executive committee and approved by a majority of 2/3 members. The decision of the executive committee will be final.
Role and Functions of IATO
Since the formation of IATO, the tour operation business has gained recognition and importance at globally. IATO has done remarkable work in the field of tourism promotion and development.
Main roles and functions of IATO are following as:
- Promote national integration and international understanding.
- Acts as an image builder.
- Organizes ‘Farm Tour’ (overseas).
- Encourage tourism education and research.
- Settle disputes between the members.
- Protect the members from the mal-practices.
- Provides information.
Tourism and travel associations exist in almost every country in the world. These associations lay down the guidelines, objectives aim to protect the interest of the members as well as tourists. The associations, directly and indirectly, promote tourism and build the image of the host country at the globe. These associations help the department of tourism to formulate effective and extensive tourism policies and strategies.

The Indian Association of Tour Operators (IATO) is the National body of the tourism industry. It has over 1400 members covering all segments of Tourism Industry. Established in 1982, IATO today has international acceptance, and linkages. It has close connections and constant interaction with other Tourism Associations in US, Nepal and Indonesia, where USTOA, NATO, ASITA and NTA are its member bodies; and is increasing its international networking with professional bodies for better facilitation to the International traveler visiting not only India but the entire Region.
IATO has five categories of membership: Active, Allied, Associate, International and Honorary. All its active members are recognized and approved by the Ministry of Tourism, Govt. of India.
IATO interacts closely with the Government on all critical Issues affecting the Tourism Industry in India with the highest priority to Tourism facilitation. It interacts closely with all Government Ministries / Departments, Chambers of Commerce and Industry, Diplomatic Missions etc. It acts as the common medium between the Decision Makers and the industry, and presents the complete perspective to both sides, synergizing their common agenda of Tourism facilitation. All IATO members observe the highest standards of professional ethics and offer personalized service to their clients.
Being the National Apex Body of the Tourism industry, IATO is always actively responsive to its social responsibility.

All IATO members actively participate in meeting their Social Obligations not only during national emergencies and natural calamities. but also as an ongoing venture. During the recent years IATO Members contributed generously for the National Defense Fund and also organized Blood Donation camps during the Kargil conflict, carried out relief work in the Cyclone affected areas in Orissa, set up emergency relief supplies for the victims of Gujarat Earthquake, besides adopting a village and providing them the necessary relief and rehabilitation infrastructure. IATO has contributed whole heartedly to the Prime Minister's Relief fund, also to help the Government in their efforts during the national Crisis. IATO has five categories of membership: Active, Allied, Associate, International and Honorary. All its active members are recognized and approved by the Indian government's Department of Tourism and have at least three years experience of handling International Tourists to India, before being admitted to the IATO fraternity IATO's affairs are managed by an Executive Committee, elected by the Active Members every two years. The Executive Committee is headed by The President with a team of six Office Bearers and 9 Executive Members. The Executive Committee meets every month to discuss current Tourism Industry and Membership Issues. IATO networks through its State Level Chapters at the local level where all local issues are handled at the appropriate level. IATO has 12 Action Committees, each focused on a specialized area headed by a Convenor assisted by his committee members. They are: • Adventure Tourism Development Committee • Civil Aviation, Press & PR Committee • Domestic Tourism Development Committee • Grievances Committee • Guides Coordination Committee • Host Committee • Hotel Relations Development Committee • IATO News Committee • Legal Affairs, Insurance & Consumer Committee • Privilege Card Development Committee • Railways Co-ordination & Dev. Committee • Surface Transportation Development Committee • Website Development Committee IATO member meet every month on the first Saturday, for interaction with each other and with a Guest Speaker, who delves on current issues. The members are updated on the events of the month at this meet. With the feedback from the Chapters and the Action Committees, unresolved and major issues are focused and discussed at the IATO Annual Convention. All IATO annual conventions are held in different States of India every year. Different States vie for each other to hold this National Industry Convention. Madhya Pradesh Tourism Board and IATO sign an MoU to promote tourism in the State
An Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between Madhya Pradesh Tourism Board, (MPTB) and The Indian Association of Tour Operators (IATO) in Bhopal to strengthen, promote and develop cooperation in research, promotion and tourism development in Madhya Pradesh
MPTB and IATO agreed to assist each other to promote tourism to the state by organising travel visits to destination of Madhya Pradesh; Organising familiarisation trips of Madhya Pradesh; Marketing & Awareness through all possible means; Exchange of publication, reports and other academic materials; Co-organise Travel and Tourism trade events/exhibitions; and Promoting Tourism Destinations through Media and PR.
MPTB shall provide Madhya Pradesh Tourism specific brochures and publicity materials to IATO which IATO will share with its large membership base and foreign tour operators through its members in order to promote tourism destinations in Madhya Pradesh and rural tourism destinations. IATO will also share the information with potential investors in IATO membership for Capital Investment subsidy for creation of Tourism infrastructure and to establish Tourism Projects etc. by way of investment and interest subsidy with an intention to promote investment in Madhya Pradesh. IATO will also share the information with the foreign tour operators through its members regarding Madhya Pradesh Film Tourism Policy and motivate foreign filmmakers through FTOs to shoot films in location of Madhya Pradesh and get all the available benefits.
MPTB and IATO will jointly identify some lessor known but potential tourism sites for developing and marketing amongst tourists and create new circuits, itineraries depending upon available approach to the sites and comfortable accommodation at those locations.
The MoU was signed by Mr Sheo Shekhar Shukla, IAS, Managing Director – Madhya Pradesh Tourism Board (MPTB) and Mr Rajiv Mehra Mehra, President – Indian Association of Tour Operators (IATO). Shri Vivek Shrotriya, IAS, Additional Managing Director- MPTB, Mr Yuvraj Padole, Deputy Director- MPTB, Mr Ravi Gosain, Vice President – IATO and Mr Mahendra Pratap Singh, Chairman – IATO Madhya Pradesh & Chhattisgarh Chapter witnessed the MoU signing ceremony in Bhopal.
During the signing of MoU, it was also discussed to organize the 39 th IATO Annual Convention in Bhopal in September 2024.

About ADTOI
Association of Domestic Tour Operators of India (ADTOI), National Body of Domestic Tour Operators, constituted on 7th August 1996 with the express purpose of consolidating the efforts of all those tour operators who are actively engaged in the promotion of "Domestic Tourism" in the country. We are nearing 780 members all over India on the rolls and likely to enroll more members to our fold in the near future. Our members work to ensure delivery of professional service to the consumer, through its principal suppliers, which are primarily the accommodation facilities, as also travel intermediaries like railways, transporters, airlines & guides.
Some of major objectives of this association are :
A. "SUVIDHA", guaranteeing safety and security for travelers.
B. "SURAKSHA" and upgrading - updating - disseminating information - "SOOCHNA".
- 2. To establish a healthy atmosphere in the domestic tourism industry and foster healthy relations between tour operators, travel agents and other persons and organizations in tourism industry.
- 3. To formulate an uniform code of conduct to govern the procedure of booking, confirmations, payments, refunds, cancellations, no-shows, changes, pre-ponements and postponements, retention charges, commission and discounts.
- 4. To establish channels of communication and liaison with the Department of Tourism, Govt. of India, State and other public and private bodies; and take all necessary steps to promote and develop domestic tourism in India.
- 5. To promote environment protection, cultural exchange and national integration in the territory of India.
- 6. To educate the traveller about the importance of eco-friendliness and promote the cause of a pristine and clean environment.
