The Complete Guide to Savandurga Trek

The Savandurga trek follows a trail to the top of Asia’s largest monolith hill.

Located 60 km away from Bengaluru in the Savandurga state forest, this trail is famous for its challenging climb and amazing views of Magadi, Manchabele, and Thippagondanahalli reservoirs and the Arkavathi river.

“Karigudda” (black hill) and “Biligudda” (white hill) make the Savandurga hill cluster.

Savandurga Fort was the secondary capital of the Magadi rulers such as Kempegowda, and from 1638 to 1728, it was occupied by Dalavayi Devaraja of Mysore.

It is also called 'Savinadurga' or the Fort of Death because of the steep incline and defense structure.

Savandurga has two temples at the base. Savandi Veerabhadraswamy temple and Sree Lakshmi Narasimhaswamy temple. They attract devotees from many parts of Karnataka.

These temples date back to 1340 AD and are believed to have been built by the Hoysala rulers.

Savandurga Hill is off Magadi Road and is easily accessible via buses, cars, or two-wheelers.

Most Spectacular Sunrise

You can start the trek early in the morning at 5am to view one of the most spectacular sunrise. If you are lucky, you will witness the sun rising in between a sea of clouds.

The Savandurga trek can be completed by following two separate trails - “Karigudda” (Black hill) and “Biligudda” (White hill). Only Biligudda trail is accessible to general public as it is not permitted by the Forest Department to trek through the Karigudda trail.

The Biligudda trail originates near the Sri Lakshmi Narasimhaswamy temple which is approximately 60 kms from Bengaluru city.

Section I: Sri Lakshmi Narasimhaswamy Temple to Rocky Section

Trek Distance: 260 metres Trek Duration: 10-15 minutes GPS coordinates of Sri Lakshmi Narasimhaswamy temple: 12°54'58.2"n 77°17'53.6"e GPS coordinates of Rocky Section: 12°55'07.8"n 77°17'59.6"e

The Sri Lakshmi Narasimhaswamy Temple located at the base of the monolith hill or Savandurga hill is a bustling temple teeming with devotees. The trail towards the summit begins behind the temple and in the South East direction.

There is a pavement which leads to the trail (it is an approximately 200-300 metre walk). The route is relatively easy to find as tourists and trekkers will be seen walking on the trail.

The initial trail follows a mud path through some foliage. This section is a light ascent till you reach the base of the hill.

The rocky section or the base of the hill marks the end of the first section. It should take you approximately 10 to 15 minutes to reach the base of the hill.

Section II: Rocky Section to Fort Wall I

Trek Distance: 370 metres Trek Duration: 20-25 minutes GPS coordinates of Rocky section: 12°55'07.8"n, 77°17'59.6"e GPS coordinates of Fort Wall I: 12°55'15.58"n, 77°17'54.33"e

The second section begins as you step onto the hill and start walking up towards the summit.

| Tip: It’s recommended to start this section early in the day as once the sun gets overhead, the rock heats up and it can become quite challenging to walk in the heat, especially during the summer months.

As you start walking up the rock, you’ll get to see a lot more greenery and glimpses of the Manchanabele reservoir. This section is a little steep and does require trekkers to be in good shape. It is a good 400-500 metre ascent and should take at-least 20-25 minutes if you’re walking at a good pace.

The trail is not very easy to spot, so be on the lookout for markings on the rocks and boulders to ensure you are on the right track.

Once you reach the ancient fort wall, you’ve completed the second section of the trek.

Tip: Follow the electric lines/lighting poles. They act as a route/trail guide on the trek till you reach the muddy trails on the top.

This is a great place to take a break and catch your breath and obviously turn around and enjoy the lush green expanse below.

Section III: Fort Wall I to Nandi Temple (Summit) via Fort Wall II

Trek distance: 1.36 km Trek duration: 80-90 minutes GPS coordinates of fort wall i: 12°55'15.58"n, 77°17'54.33"e GPS coordinates of fort wall ii: 12°55'27.20"n, 77°17'50.17"e GPS coordinates of Nandi temple: 12°55'10.07"n, 77°17'31.72"e

From here the trail becomes a lot more steeper. It is at-least an hour long walk up to the second fort wall.

Sneha Yadav, our Social Media Manage/former Experrience Coodrinator at Indiahikes says:

"There are footprint-like inscriptions in the rock itself which can be used to walk up the hill ".

These indentations in the rock were probably carved in from the time of Dalavayi Devaraja or before and they are extremely useful in case the trekker is experiencing fatigue or is unable to find a strong grip on the rock.

These steps are extremely useful when you’re down as the gradient is quite steep. Picture by Bhajish

As the trail is primarily on granite rock, the shoes you wear should have a really good trip. It’s also important for the shoes to be flexible, which is why we recommend wearing running or walking shoes with good grip over the more rigid trekking shoes (which are generally preferred for the Himalayan treks).

Suhas Saya, Head of the Documentation and Experience Coordinators team at Indiahikes says:

" I prefer walking up this trek barefoot as it gives me the maximum grip, but I definitely won’t recommend that during the summer months as the rock radiates a lot of heat and there are chances of bruising your soles. "

In this section, you will also get to see a lot of ponds (not actually ponds but rainwater which has accumulated in the depressions of the hill). And a few tanks which were probably used to store rain water by those occupying the fort.

A few minutes after you reach the second fort wall, you get a respite from the rocky trail. The trail flattens out as you proceed towards the forest section.

The trail now transitions into a rocky cave structure and then into a muddy trail right until you reach the top. However, you’ll enjoy this section as it is a lot less taxing on your calves and there is a certain buzz to walking through caves, trees and roots.

This part is a little tricky as the trail is uneven and in case you miss the markings, you might get off the trail. Also, there are parts where you’ll have to hop and climb over boulders, which does require a good grip.

Once you are across the boulder farm (the point where you hop and jump over boulders), you soon reach the top. Now all you have to do is walk towards the Nandi temple and breathe in the wonderful view.

This marks the beginning of the easy section of the trek. It’s a relatively straight walk towards the temple. It should take you around 10-15 minutes maximum to reach the temple and the end of the trail.

The entire journey from the Sri Lakshmi Narasimhaswamy Temple to the Nandi temple should take around 2 to 3 hours maximum.

The journey is extremely rewarding as the view from the top is spectacular. You can see the lush green forests and parts of the Manchanabele and Thippagondanahalli reservoirs and in the horizon glimpses of the villages of Ramanagara and Magadi.

Make sure to spend at least 30 mins on the top, taking in 360° view of the surrounding hills and reflecting on your journey till the top and do not forget to have your packed lunch or snack!

Try to be quiet and close your eyes for five minutes. Observe the sounds of nature and feel your body getting comfortable and relaxed, preparing itself to descend down the same way you came up. It is a beautiful way to spend time at the summit.

The most challenging aspect of this trek is the descent. Since the hill is steep and is made of a single rock, walking down requires patience and awareness. Slipping and falling while descending can lead to serious injury, therefore it is important for trekkers to walk down slowly and carefully.

Use the indentations in the rock to assist you while going down in case your shoes are slipping.

The journey back down will take you about 2 hours from the summit.

It is also important to mix it up while walking downhill to ensure you don’t over-stress your muscles. Take shorter strides and longer strides, up on your toes and down on back on your heels, whatever it takes to minimize muscle tension in particular areas. Also we advise you to take short hydration breaks especially during the summer months.

In the monsoons, you have to be extra careful as the water will be running down the slopes, leading to extremely slippery slopes.

Best Time To Do The Savandurga Trek

The best season or time to do the Savandurga Trek would be between the end of September to February .

During the summer season, the rocks radiate a lot of heat which becomes unbearable on the trail. Slippery rocks in monsoons make it difficult to grip the surface and this becomes dangerous on the steep sections which demand a really good grip. Hence, we do not recommend doing this trek in summer and peak monsoon months .

• Reaching Savandurga By Your Vehicle From Bangalore

Savandurga is in the town of Magadi. The journey is a scenic one that takes you through the lush green countryside.

If you are planning on reaching Savandurga using your own vehicle, use this link to help set up navigation in Google Maps.

If you do not have access to Google maps, here is how to reach Savandurga:

There are two routes you can take to reach Savandurga from Bangalore.

1. From Mysore Road, take the right turn at the signal towards Dodda Aladamara Road just after Decathlon on your left and Rajarajeshwari Dental College on your right.

A visit to Dodda Aladamara (Big Banyan Tree) is a must, either before or after your trek. The Banyan Tree here is over 400 years old and it makes you marvel at the gigantic structure of the tree.

In about 16 kilometres, after crossing Manchanbele Bridge , take a right on to Savandurga-Manchalabele Road .

After 4 kilometres, take a right on to Savandurga Road .

This route is 50 kilometres long, but not that scenic compared to the other one.

2. Take the Outer Ring Road from Nayandahalli and turn right on to Magadi Main Road at the T-junction.

Continue on Magadi Main Road for 40 kilometres and take a right turn at the junction on to Magadi-Ramanagara Road. In about 8 kilometres, turn left on to Savandurga Road .

The route is almost 63 kilometres long, but it is worth it! You will not get to see the rural and greenet side of Bangalore if you are taking the first option.

• Reaching Savandurga By Public Transport System

From the Bangalore, the most convenient way to reach Savandurga is as follows:

1. Majestic Bus Stop ---> Magadi ---> Shared Auto or Bus to Sri Lakshmi Narasimhaswamy Temple

Shared autos are available every 15 minutes and costs Rs.20 per person. It is a reliable and fun way to travel with the locals as many visit the temple everyday.

Buses are available every 30 minutes and costs Rs.15 per person.

Difficult Sections On Savandurga

There are no sections on the Savandurga trek that can be classified as difficult as such. However, a trekker must always anticipate and prepare for every eventuality. The trail is extremely slippery during monsoons.

Here are a few things you should keep an eye out for:

1. Slippery Slopes (Monsoon Specific):

As the trek is predominantly on granite rock with very little vegetation and soil, in the monsoons, the trail can become extremely slippery. As the water runs off the slopes of the hill, trekkers can easily lose footing, which can lead to serious injury. If trekking in the monsoons, trekkers should be very careful with their choice of footwear and should check weather charts so as to avoid days with anticipated heavy rains.

2. Rocks and Boulders:

There are multiple parts of the trek where trekkers will be required to scale small boulders or walk between large rocks. While this is an extremely enjoyable part of the trek, one needs to be careful. Slipping or falling from a boulder can lead to serious injury and trekkers must exercise caution while navigating these sections.

3. Descent:

The Savandurga trail is known to be an easy to moderate one. This is because of the skill required while descending. Since the trail is primarily on steep granite rock, one can easily lose their grip and slip while descending. The descent is quite challenging and for this very reason we recommend trekkers to descend slowly one step at a time. While descending do enjoy the beautiful view, but also keep an eye on the trail so as to avoid injuries!

How To Get Fit For Savandurga Trek

The Savandurga trek is classified as an Easy-Moderate grade trek . From Sri Savandi Veerabhadra Swamy Temple at 2,736 feet, you will gain approximately 1,286 feet in altitude. Though the altitude gain is not much, the continuous ascent can be quite demanding for people who lead a sedentary lifestyle.

Training yourself for a low-altitude Easy-Moderate grade trek.

Here’s a guide to help you get fit for the trek in 4 weeks.

➤ Cardiovascular endurance

In case you’re just starting with a fitness routine, start slow and increase your pace everyday in the following manner –

  • Target completing a brisk walk of 5 km in 45 minutes when you begin.
  • Gradually increase your pace by walking 5 km, 4 times a week.
  • As you become more comfortable, introduce jogging in your routine.
  • Progressively increase the distance you jog in a workout until you can complete 5 km in 40 mins.

If you prefer cycling over running, target covering 15 km in 60 minutes when you begin.

  • Progressively increase your pace to cover 18 km in one hour.

➤  Strength training

This is an important area you need to work on.

Strength training is equally important to trek comfortably. Work on your glutes, calves and knees. Additionally, work on strengthening your core.

You must strengthen your core muscles. For strengthening your core muscles, holding a plank and it’s variations (elbow, side planks) are the best exercises to go about doing it.

Also try these exercises for strength-

Target 4 sets of squats with 20 in each set

– Squats (Mix it up with sumo squats)

– Lunges (Forward, backward and lateral lunges)

➤ Flexibility

Flexibility determines the amount of movement your bones can make in any direction around joints such as shoulders, elbows, hips and knees.

It is an aspect that will help you trek comfortably. Carrying a backpack, however light, can become a strain. Stretching your hamstrings, quadriceps, hip flexors and lower back muscles regularly, promotes relaxation in the tissues reducing the strain on your back.

If you can’t go out and jog because of time and space constraints,  here’s a video  you can use to work out indoors.

Frequently Asked Questions

❖ can i do this trek if i have never been on a trek before.

Yes and No . A person who follows an active lifestyle, can consider Savandurga for their first trek. For people who lead a relatively sedentary lifestyle, we recommend a slightly less strenous trek like Brahmagiri or Skandagiri.

❖ Can I trek Savandurga at night?

No . Night trekking to Savandurga is banned.

However, if you want to experience one of the most spectacular sunrises on a trek filled with colors, we recommend you reach the base by 5 AM and start your trek. This way, you will see the sun rising on the east as you traverse from east to west.

Savandurga Hills Trek: Timings, Entry Fee, Best Time to Visit and How to Reach

Just 60 km away from the bustling city of Bengaluru, lies the serene and majestic Savandurga Hills, a trek that I’ve had the pleasure of undertaking multiple times. Each journey to the top of Asia’s largest monolith hill has been a unique experience, filled with challenges, breathtaking views, and a sense of accomplishment.

Savandurga Hills Trek Board

From the panoramic vistas of Magadi, Manchabele and Thippagondanahalli reservoirs, to the winding Arkavathi river, the scenery is simply mesmerizing. The Savandurga hill cluster, comprising the “Karigudda” (Black hill) and “Biligudda” (White hill), along with the historic Savandurga fort, has always been a sight to behold.

Here are the Savandurga Hills Trek Timings, Entry Fee and Key Details:

You check the pricing information on Karnataka Tourism website .

History Savandurga Hills

Nestled in the heart of Karnataka, Savandurga, a hill 33 km west of Bangalore, rises to 1226 m above mean sea level.

Savandurga Hills is considered to be among the largest monolith hills in Asia . Comprising two hills, the Billigudda (white hill) and the Karigudda (black hill), Savandurga provides a thrilling environment for trekking and rock climbing.

Savandurga was a prominent place during the Hoysala rule. The hill fort on the top of the hill was erected in 1543 by Samanta Raya .

Savandurga Hills was under the control of Kempe Gowda until 1728 when it was captured by the Raja of Mysore, who subsequently lost it to Haider Ali. In 1791, during the Third Anglo-Mysore War, Lord Cornwallis seized Savandurga from Tipu Sultan’s army.

At the base of these hills, one can find the Savandi Veerabhadreshwara Swamy and Narasimha Swamy temples, drawing pilgrims from across the region.

The journey to these temples is thrilling due to the uneven path, thus making it to the wish-list of rock-climbers, cave-explorers, and adventurers.

Getting to Savandurga Hills

The journey to Savandurga is half the adventure. There are two main routes to get there from Bangalore.

  • The first is the NICE toll road , which extends from Electronic City to Mysore Road. Despite being a longer route for some, I recommend this route for its well-maintained roads and quick travel time.
  • Alternatively, you can drive through the city on smaller roads and join Mysore Road. After reaching Mysore road, a drive through the Savandurga forest and some charming villages will get you to the base of the hills.
  • If you’re taking a bus, you can catch one from Majestic Bus Stop to Magadi and then a shared auto or bus to Sri Lakshmi Narasimhaswamy Temple.

The serenity of the forests at night and the allure of the moonlit road are experiences I highly recommend. However, remember to remain cautious while navigating through this area.

My Savandurga Hills Trek Experience

The Savandurga Hills trek offers two trails – “Karigudda” and “Biligudda”. However, the Forest Department only permits the Biligudda trail for public trekking .

The starting point of this trail is near the Sri Lakshmi Narasimhaswamy temple.

The trek is divided into three main sections, each with its own unique challenges and rewards:

  • Sri Lakshmi Narasimhaswamy Temple to Rocky Section: This section is a light ascent till you reach the base of the hill. It’s a pleasant 10 to 15-minute walk that always serves as a great warm-up for the journey ahead.
  • Rocky Section to Fort Wall I: This is where the real challenge begins. The path becomes steeper and demands a good level of fitness. I’ve found that a steady pace can get you through this section in about 20-25 minutes.
  • Fort Wall I to Nandi Temple (Summit) via Fort Wall II: The final stretch of the trek is the most demanding, but also the most rewarding. The trail transitions into a rocky cave structure and then into a muddy trail right until you reach the top. It’s a tough hour-long walk, but the view from the top makes it all worth it.

From the lush green forests to the sparkling reservoirs and the distant villages of Ramanagara and Magadi, the view from the summit is a sight I look forward to every time I embark on this trek.

Best Time to Visit Savandurga Hills

Having done the Savandurga Hills Trek multiple times, I can confidently say that the best time to undertake this journey is between the end of September to February .

The summer heat can make the rocks unbearable, and the monsoons can make the trail slippery and dangerous.

Savandurga Hills Trekking Essentials:

Make sure you are prepared for the Savandurga Hills Trek. Here are my recommendation:

  • Appropriate Footwear : You need shoes with rugged grip and a robust sole that can withstand the terrain. Test your shoes on the rock surface before beginning your climb. Also, avoid climbing in wet weather as the rocks can become slippery.
  • Comfortable Attire : Dress comfortably, considering the climate. In the early morning, warm clothes are advisable, while light-coloured, breathable fabric is best for a post-sunrise climb. Gloves can be helpful too.
  • Assess Your Fitness Level : Take your time and pace yourself. This is not a race. The incline can be daunting, and it’s easy to lose your breath if you rush. It’s important to remember that the same trek back awaits you after reaching the top.
  • Travel Light : Carry minimal supplies during the day. Vendors sell water and snacks on the way up, but it might cost you a bit more.
  • Follow the Arrows : The trail is well-marked on Google Maps. Stick to the path, and if something seems too risky, it probably is.

Savandurga Hills Trekking Tips:

Here are some handy tips for your Savandurga Hills Trekking journey:

  • The Climb is Divisible : The trek can be divided into three stages. The initial climb to the fort is relatively easy, but the final part of this stage has a very steep incline. Take it slow and steady. The climb beyond the fort, to the artificial lakes and hut-like structure, is a bit steep and long but manageable. Finally, the hardest part is the climb till Nandi. It involves traversing through fallen boulders and bare rocks and can be quite the adrenaline rush.
  • Ideal Time to Visit : Early morning is the best time to start your trek, both to avoid the hot sun and to catch a glimpse of the awe-inspiring sunrise. Avoid trekking here during the rainy season as the plain rock surface becomes extremely slippery.
  • Who Should Avoid This Trek : This trek is not recommended for the elderly or very young children due to the difficulty level. The entire hill is composed of hard, plain rocks, which can get unbearably hot after noon.
  • Food Provisions on the Hill : There are several shops at the base of the mountain and a few sellers at the top who offer drinks and snacks . However, prepare to pay double the usual price. You can try the chat sold near the peak for a reasonable 50rs.

Savandurga Hills Parking

There is paid parking available at the bottom of the Savandurga Hills. I have paid Rs 40 for my 4 wheeler. 2 wheeler parking costs Rs 20. Make sure to reach early to get an assured parking spot.

Savandurga hill is considered to be among the largest monolith hills in Asia. Named Savandurga by Immadi Kempe Gauda, this hill fortress was believed to be unconquerable until the British took over in 1791; Lord Cornwallis has written a detailed account of its capture.

The hill looks imposing as one drives closer to it and it is easy to understand why it is called the ‘rock of death.’ The Nandi mantap looks like a small square on top and all visible sides of the rock look steep and dangerous; only upon reaching the base does one see the rock’s gentle slopes.

Brief about savandurga trek.

Savandurga Trek is a challenging climb to the top of Asia’s largest monolith hill located 60 km away from Bengaluru in the Savandurga state forest. Along the way, you’ll witness the breathtaking views of Magadi, Manchabele, Thippagondanahalli reservoirs, and Arkavathi river.

Savandurga is also known as the Fort of Death due to its steep incline and defense structure. The hill cluster consists of Karigudda (Black hill) and Biligudda (White hill) and has two temples at the base – Savandi Veerabhadraswamy temple and Sree Lakshmi Narasimhaswamy temple.

The Great Savandurga Trek Monolith

These temples date back to 1340 AD and attract devotees from various parts of Karnataka. The base of the temple is surrounded by a forest with thick bamboo groves and dense shrubs. You can explore the herbal plantation that has close to 60 species of trees used for local herbal medicines.

The second is Manchanabele Dam, which supplies water to the town of Magadi and offers breathtaking views of the backwaters of the Arkavathi river. Visitors can enjoy activities like boating and kayaking on the beautiful lake formed by the dam.

What is the best time to visit Savandurga Trek

It is recommended to do the Savandurga Trek between the end of September to February, which is the best season for this trek. During summer, the rocks radiate a lot of heat, and during the monsoon, the trail becomes slippery and dangerous, making it difficult to climb.

Therefore, it is not recommended to do this trek during summer and peak monsoon months. Winter months are the best for this trek as the trail is open and does not feature any trees.

How to reach the starting point of the trek?

To reach Savandurga from Bangalore by vehicle, there are two routes to choose from. The first route is about 50 kilometers long and includes a visit to the 400-year-old Dodda Aladamara Banyan Tree. The second route is almost 63 kilometers long but offers scenic views of the rural and green side of Bangalore. It is recommended to take the second route for a more enjoyable experience.

For those using public transport, the most convenient way to reach Savandurga is by taking a bus from the Majestic Bus Stop to Magadi, and then a shared auto or bus to the Sri Lakshmi Narasimhaswamy Temple. Shared autos are available every 15 minutes and cost Rs. 20 per person, while buses are available every 30 minutes and cost Rs. 15 per person.

Availability of accommodations and food near the trek

Travellers planning to trek Savandurga should bring their own food since there are no restaurants or proper meal options available at the base or in the nearby village. Snack stalls are the only source of food, and non-purified groundwater is the only water source available. Therefore, it is recommended to bring at least 2 litres of water from home if you are allergic to groundwater.

Accommodation:

As it is a one-day trek, there is no need to stay near the base, and you can book a hotel in Bangalore or the nearby village and travel from there.

The Difficulty level of the Savandurga Trek

If you’re a first-time trekker, don’t worry, the Savandurga night trek is moderate and does not require any prior experience or professional training. However, you need to be careful during the rocky terrains, especially since it’s a night journey. While the trek is not classified as difficult, trekkers should always be prepared for any eventuality.

During monsoons, the trail can become extremely slippery, so it’s important to be careful with your choice of footwear and check weather charts to avoid days with anticipated heavy rain. There are also parts of the trek where trekkers will be required to scale small boulders or walk between large rocks. While descending, one can easily lose their grip and slip since the trail is primarily on steep granite rock, so it’s recommended to descend slowly one step at a time while keeping an eye on the trail.

About Place: Savandurga is a place with a fort on a lofty mountain, about 60 km from Bengaluru. The hill consists of two granite cliffs of 4000 feet tall and 13 kilometers (8 miles) in circumference , one called Bilibetta or white peak, another Karibetta or black peak.

It was a prominent place during the Hoysala rule. Over a period of time several rulers held this place. The hill fort on the top of the outcrop was erected in 1543 by Samanta Raya. It then came to Immadi Kempe Gowda of Bengaluru until 1728 when it was captured by the Raja of Mysore from whom it passed to Haider Ali. During the Anglo-Mysore Wars of the late 18th century, Savandurga was the most forbidding of all the Tippu's hill forts in the area and hitherto deemed impregnable. Nevertheless, British troops under Cornwallis commanded by Lt Col Stuart mounted a successful assault against the fort in December 21, 1791.

The entire area is covered by verdure and serene atmosphere. This region is famous for medicinal plants and shrub forest. This is a paradise for the climbing enthusiasts. Climbers can scale sheer rock faces enduring up to grade 7. It is also good for a day's trek and camping at the foothill.

Savandurga has a rich and fascinating history that dates back to ancient times. According to some sources, Savandurga was originally called Savandi by the locals, which means “the fort of death” . This name was given because of the many battles and wars that took place on its hills over the years.

The rocks have different colors and textures depending on their mineral composition and exposure to sunlight.

Savandurga consists of two hills, Billigudda (the white hill) and Karigudda (the black hill), which are separated by a valley. Billigudda is called the white hill because its rocks are lighter in color due to more exposure to sunlight. Karigudda is called the black hill because its rocks are darker in color due to less exposure to sunlight.

The hills have an average elevation of about 1200 meters above sea level. The highest point on Billigudda is 1226 meters above sea level, while the highest point on Karigudda is 1227 meters above sea level.

Navadurga – Trek To The Nine Hill Forts From Bangalore

Banglore is a mysterious city. It is a conundrum that is waiting to be explored. A garden City and home to India’s greatest tech empires. But perhaps most exciting of all its attributes is the proximity of the Western Ghats. This inspires adventurers and travelers to become frontiers and discover the different facets of the ‘nature gem’ that Banglore cherishes. This effect is much more pronounced on us and always fuels us to trek and witness wondrous sights. After all, it’s not the destination that drives us but the journey.

Navadurga – ‘Nava’ means nine and ‘Durga’ means fort. The forts are reminders of rich history and some are even thousands of years old. We feel that these monumental structures are quickly being forgotten in the annuals of history. So, in this blog let’s explore the nine hill forts (Navadurga) surrounding Bangalore, located within a radius of 100 Km.

Important Tips

  • As the hill forts are formed on the mountain rocks, it’s very difficult to climb in the scorching heat during midday. It is always wise to go early and as an added perk you get to enjoy the breathtaking golden sunrise.
  • Since Bangalore has a pleasant climate throughout the year, the best time to visit Navadurga is anytime except during the rainy season as the rocks might get slippery.
  • You won’t find any food vendors during the hike. So, carry enough water and energy bars.
  • There is no direct public transport to reach the base of the hills. So, hire a vehicle of your choice.

Nandi Hills-navadurga

Nandidurga is an ancient hill fortress in the Chikkaballapur district of Karnataka. During the Chola period, it was called “Anandagiri” meaning the Hill of Happiness. There is also a Nandi temple at the top of the hills. The fort was built by the Ganga dynasty, which was later enlarged and strengthened by Tipu Sultan. Tipu Sultan used to drop traitors and British sympathizers from a high point in the fortress called the Tippu Drop. Tipu Sultan’s summer palace is not open to the public but you can take a scenic stroll along the fortified wall.

Nandi Hills is one of the more fairly known places so is mostly crowded. The motorable road takes you to the top of Nandi Hills. But hiking from the Sultanpet village offers an enriching experience. The path is straightforward with well-laid steps. It is truly a feast to watch the beauty of the sun, rising leisurely above the floating clouds. It is also popular among cyclists and bikers.

Savandurga is a hill fort that is considered to be the largest monolith in Asia. ‘Savanadurga’ or ‘Savinadurga’ translates to the ‘Fort of Death’. It is formed by two hills locally known as Karigudda (Black Hill) and Billigudda (White Hill). The two temples at the foothills, Sri Srivandi Veerabhadraswamy temple, and Sri Lakshmi Narasimha temple are regularly visited by the locals.

There are no paved routes or steps. You have to follow the electric lines to reach the summit. Although the climb is steep, it is one of the highly recommended treks for passionate adventurers. You can find a few remains of the fort en route. Start early to watch the sunrise reflecting on the Arkavati River. The distant view of Nandi Hills is a pretty sight to be remembered. On your way back, you can stop at the Manchanabele dam to indulge in water sports.

3. Channarayanadurga

Channarayana Durga fort

Channarayanadurga is a hill fort in the Tumkur district of Karnataka. The fort was originally built by the lesser-known kings of Madhugiri. Many battles were fought for its possession and it changed hands several times between the Marathas and the Mysore Wodeyars. During the third Mysore war, the British took over the fort and then abandoned it.

This is one of the not-so-popular treks around Bangalore. The initial climb is steep and slippery until you reach the fort walls. You will find a reservoir, small temples, and old ruined structures inside the fort. However, for us, the splendorous view of the Madhugiri fort in the backdrop made the trek a rewarding experience.

  • Distance from Bangalore: 99 Km
  • Route: Bangalore – Nelamangala – Dobbaspete – Koratagere – Channarayanadurga
  • Trek length: 1.43 Km, one way
  • Altitude: 1053 m

huthridurga-navadurga

Hutridurga, also known as Uttari Betta, is a fortified hill in the Tumkur district of Karnataka. It was built in the 16th century by Kempe Gowda. Historically, the fort was the military bastion of Tipu Sultan against the British. It was later conquered by the British later in 1791.

The trek starts from Santhepet village and passes through the seven-tiered fort. The paved steps take you to the Shankar Eshwara temple. The trek does not end here, it continues through a cave, and an open grassland, and proceeds further to the rock structure at the top, from where you can witness a great sunrise reflecting on the lakefront.

  • Distance from Bangalore: 77 Km
  • Route: Bangalore – Nelamangala – Solur – Huthridurga
  • Trek length: 4 Km in total

5. Kabbaladurga

kabbaladurga-navadurga

Kabbaladurga is a ruined hill fort in the Bangalore rural district. In the 18th century, Hyder Ali captured the Kabbaladurga Fort from Murari Rao and kept him, prisoner, in the fort till his death. It is said that the convicts were thrown off the cliff as punishment.

The trek starts from the old Kotilingeshwara temple at the base. It is relatively easy and the initial path has steps carved out of rock. The markings on the rocks will guide you to reach the peak. The old and crumbling buildings on the top represent a prison, garrison, and storage godown. The Bheemalingeswara and Kabbalamma temples are popular among the surrounding villages.

6. Makalidurga

makalidurga-navadurga

Makalidurga is a hill fort located in Bangalore’s rural district. Unfortunately, there is not much information on the history of the Makalidurga fort.

For this trek, it is mandatory to book your entry tickets as it comes under the Makali Forest Reserve. As soon as you cross the railway track, a forest officer will approach you to verify the tickets. Walk a few meters to reach the open ground with the mountain view. The sight of the lake and the vast green fields from midway instills a new appreciation for nature. The trek path is marked along the way to the fort ruins. There is also a small abandoned Shiva temple at its peak.

  • Entry Fee: Rs. 250 per person + GST
  • Trek-Difficulty Level: Easy
  • Distance from Bangalore: 57 Km
  • Route: Bangalore – Hebbal – Yelahanka – Doddaballapura – Makalidurga

7. Huliyurdurga

huliyurdurga-navadurga

In the native language Kanada, ‘Huliyurdurga’ translates to the ‘Fort of the Tiger.’ It is located in the Tumkur district of Karnataka. It is a solid rock of mass that appears to be an inverted cup. The fort is said to have been built by Kempe Gowda.

The trek to Huliyurdurga fort starts from the old temple. The route is a bit rough as it is more of a climb than a trek. Few markings can be found on the rocks. Although the fort is completely ruined now, the summit features one of the best views of Hemagiri and the town below.

  • Trek-Difficulty Level: Easy to moderate
  • Distance from Bangalore: 92 Km
  • Route: Bangalore – Ramnagara – Channapatna – Huliyurdurga
  • Altitude: 845 m

8. Devarayanadurga/ DD Hills

DD hills or Devarayanadurga temple

Devarayanadurga is a temple town in the Tumkur district of Karnataka. Devarayanadurga translates to the ‘Fort of the God’ and true to its name, the hilltop is dotted with several temples. The fort was captured by Chikka Devaraja Wodeyar on one of his victorious campaigns.

DD Hills is well known among motorcycle enthusiasts for its hairpin curves. You can take a refreshing stop at the Devarayanadurga lake before proceeding to the hill. The road to the left takes you to the Yoga Narasimha temple from the prominent intersection where entry fees are collected. Go straight along the spiral road and ascend a few 100 steps to arrive at the Bhoga Narasimha temple at the top. The path beside the sacred pond leads you to the pinnacle but nowadays visitors aren’t allowed for unspecified reasons.

While the place is great for sightseeing, there is not much trekking to do. Opposite the regional food stall, there is a small open ground from where you can enjoy a bird’s-eye view of the place below. To hit the famous Instagrammable cliff, you need to go past the Yoga Narasimha temple and take a left. From there, you can capture stunning views encompassing the region.

You can also visit Namada Chilume which is nearby. It is a historical place that boasts its uniqueness as a place where the spring water never dries up.

  • Entry Ticket: Rs. 10 for bike, Rs. 20 for car
  • Distance from Bangalore: 71 Km
  • Route: Bangalore – Nelamangala – Dobbaspet – Deavarayanadurga

bhairavadurga-navadurga

The Bairava Fort was built by Kempe Gowda in the 17th century AD and was later captured by Tipu Sultan. The fort has two fortification walls and a temple atop dedicated to Bhairava, a fierce manifestation of Lord Shiva.

Bhairavadurga is one of the most difficult and harrowing treks among the Navadurga. This trek is not advised if you are not experienced. There are two routes to land up at the fortified hilltop. One, is through the shrubs and dense forest, while the other, is through a steep rocky ascend. Although there is not much to see at the top, the hike is an adventure in itself.

  • Trek-Difficulty Level: Moderate
  • Distance from Bangalore: 63 Km
  • Route: Bangalore – Nelamangala – Solur – Bhairavadurga

Situated at a height of 4220 ft above sea level, it is said to be the largest monolith in Asia. If seen from a distance, it looks like a massive stone. Named Savandurga by Immadi Kempe Gauda, this hill fortress was believed to be unconquerable until the British took over in 1791; Lord Cornwallis has written a detailed account of its capture. Savandurga comprises of twin peaks, one is Karigudda or The Black Hill and the other is Biligudda or The White Hill. Biligudda has been a fort prison during the Hoysala Empire. On the top of the hill, one can see ruins of the fort that were built by Kempegowda. The composition of the hill is mainly granite. A panoramic lush green view of the exteriors of Bangalore is seen from the top. The hill is surrounded by the forest region of Magadi. If lucky, one can spot beautiful migratory birds in the green horizons

The hill looks imposing as one drives closer to it and it is easy to understand why it is called the ‘rock of death.’ The Nandi mantapa looks like a small square on top and all visible sides of the rock look steep and dangerous; only upon reaching the base does one see the rock’s gentle slopes.
