Baa Atoll UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve was created in recognition of the incredible biodiversity of the underwater ecosystem, and Hanifaru Bay is the jewel in this atoll's crown. Hanifaru is a monitored snorkeling site that's renowned for attracting exceptionally high numbers of manta rays. During the southwestern monsoon (May to November), huge quantities of zooplankton become trapped in the horseshoe-shaped bay, creating a kind of zooplankton "soup," which in turn attracts remarkable numbers of zooplankton-loving "megafauna." In peak season, there could be as many as 100 mantas, plus maybe even several whale sharks feeding there. Hanifaru is one of the only places in the world where so many mantas and whale sharks aggregate in such unusually high numbers.

This atoll, also known as Kaafu Atoll, is where you'll find the international airport, the capital city, plenty of popular dive sites, several "guesthouse islands" and more than a dozen resorts. A lot of people incorrectly refer to Velana International Airport as "Male airport" (and confusingly, it even has the airport code "MLE"), but it's actually located on an island called Hulhule, which is adjacent to Malé. Most visitors don't ever set foot in Malé, and are instead whisked from Hulhule straight to their resort or guesthouse. However, while most visitors aren't sad to skip Malé, the atoll named after the country's capital city is an extremely popular spot to visit.

Visitors who don't want to hop on another plane after a long journey to the Maldives often pick resorts or guesthouses in North Malé Atoll because they know it's a quick speedboat ride to their accommodation. The closest resorts to the airport, such as Kurumba and Bandos, are only 10 to 15 minutes by speedboat. However, the furthest away islands, which could take from 45 minutes to an hour to reach by speedboat, do have the benefit of not being under flight paths and not having the capital city and other urban developments on the horizon, which guests sometimes complain about. What's more, speedboat transfers are also cheaper than seaplane transfers.

This vibrant site in North Malé Atoll is popular with divers and snorkelers alike. Its name comes from the curved shape of the reef when seen from above. You can admire a wide variety of marine life, including schools of jacks as well as Napoleon wrasse, moray eels, barracudas, snapper, groupers, reef sharks and, if you're lucky and it's the right season, maybe even mantas too.

Divers who visited the site recently raved about the excellent visibility and abundance of aquatic life, while snorkelers liked how easy it was to see the reef, as the shallowest parts are at only about 4 feet.

Maafushi is the most developed inhabited island in the Maldives when it comes to guesthouse tourism. When guesthouses were first legalized, it was on Maafushi that the first one opened in 2010. Prior to that, it was difficult for visitors to mingle with the average Maldivian and get a sense of what island life was like in the "real" Maldives. Today, Maafushi is home to dozens of guesthouses ranging in size and budget, from simple lodgings to stylish hotels. There are also plenty of cafes, watersports centers and dive centers to keep you entertained.

Hulhumalé Hulhumalé free

Hulhumalé is an entirely artificial island built over a shallow lagoon adjacent to Malé. Construction began in 1997, and the rapidly expanding island is currently well on its way to doubling in size from the original 1.5-square-mile plot. The main purpose of creating Hulhumalé was to provide more housing for the overflowing capital city, and it remains a largely residential island. However, Hulhumalé also attracts travelers thanks to its dozens of guesthouses (which mostly line the long sandy beach), as well as several watersports centers and dive centers, a skate park and its very own Central Park. You will also find a variety of cafes and restaurants, ranging from Maldivian cuisine at The Maldive Kitchen to international options like Korean Food Zone.

The main reason visitors choose to stay in Hulhumalé is because it's close to the airport. If they arrive to the Maldives at night, it means they can't hop on a seaplane (which only operate during day), so Hulhumalé is a handy pit stop for many. While it's quieter and greener than Malé, it is becoming busier every year, and some parts of it are beginning to look in need of repair. However, the beach strip, which most tourists stick to, is fairly well looked after. The second phase of this land reclamation project is newer, and the buildings and streets are in better condition there. It is separated from the rest of the island by a series of bridges over a small channel of water. 

Huraa Island Huraa Island free

Huraa is a relaxing, friendly and uncrowded island village best known to tourists for guesthouses, snorkeling and surfing opportunities. There are several surf points in the vicinity, but surfing in the Maldives is best suited to intermediate to advanced-level surfers because all of the breaks are coral breaks. There are souvenir shops, cafes, small grocery shops, two dive centers and a football field, but the white sand beaches fringing the island are probably the biggest draw, along with the unique insights you'll get into how Maldivians really live. Guesthouses on the island can also organize day trips and activities, such as sandbank trips and fishing excursions.

Past travelers love the fact that there are only electric vehicles on the island, but say it's still being developed for tourism. Some were disappointed to find that there is no "bikini beach" anymore (a tourist beach where you can wear a bikini, as it's illegal to wear skimpy swimwear on any island that isn't a resort island). However, many said the island was beautiful and they enjoyed exploring the mangrove area too.

The Maldives Victory, a 262-foot-long cargo ship, sunk in 1981 after hitting a reef in North Malé Atoll . Now, the dive site attracts scuba aficionados thanks to the beautiful corals that have covered it, as well as the rich sea life that has made the wreck a sight to behold, including turtles, trevallies, grouper, batfish, pufferfish and lionfish. For macrolife-lovers, there are also nudibranchs on the stern.

The Maldives Victory rests upright off the coast of Hulhule Island, not too far from the southern end of the Velana International Airport runway. Experts say this site is best seen between late May and July. Recent reviewers recommended a penetration dive so you don't miss the marine life inside the wreck and touted it as one of the most thrilling dive sites in the country.

Excursions in Maldives: general information

For those who are flying to the Maldives for the first time, I’ll try to describe the overall picture of activities and entertainment in the country:

• The Maldives is a thousand islands. All the islands are tiny, 1-2-3 sq. km. There are no attractions on the islands at all.
• The only place where you can find a walking tour of the attractions is in the capital city of Male, but more on that later.
• There are no mountains, rivers, or lakes in the country, and therefore activities such as trekking and hiking are not available. The highest peak in the country is less than 3 meters!!!
• One of these islands, popular with tourists, is Thoddoo Island – a comprehensive island overview can be found at the link.

Good to know: In fact, the entertainment on the Maldives is centered around beach relaxation and all water-related activities, from banana boats to sport fishing, diving, and yacht sunset cruises.

There aren’t many activities to do on land, I would say very few. But with the desire, one can find something to their liking here.

Water sports and excursions: prices, where to buy

Let’s start with water activities. Almost any activity such as banana boat rides, jet skis, kayaking, and stand-up paddleboarding can be found on any beach, local island, or resort. They are cheaper on local islands and more expensive at resorts. Below are the average prices for local islands. If you are staying at a 5-star resort, double the prices 🙂

• Kayak rental for 2 hours – $20
• Stand-up paddleboarding for 2 hours – $40
• Jet ski rental for 1 hour – $100
• Banana boat ride – $15 per person

Now, here’s a list of the most popular water activities and excursions in Maldives. Actually, most tourists come here specifically for them:

• For novice enthusiasts, fishing near the nearest reef is popular, and costs around $25-$50. You can catch “small” fish weighing up to 1-2kg and cook it on the grill.
• For professionals, there are tours for deep-sea fishing for marlin or trophy sailfish with professional equipment. This type of fishing is called big game fishing, and prices start at $700-$800 per person.

In addition, each local island and resort island has its own set of individual excursion programs. The content and prices vary, but for a general idea:

• Night snorkeling: from $30.
• Sunset yacht cruises: from $25.
• All possible picnics and barbecue parties on neighboring uninhabited islands, which are almost everywhere. Prices start at $25.
• You can find tours for snorkeling specifically with whale sharks and manta rays, where you are taken to a neighboring atoll and specifically search for whale sharks. The results are not guaranteed, these day trip tours can cost $120-$150 per person, including food. Here’s an example of such a program.

Good to know: All water excursions in Maldives, activities and entertainment such as diving, snorkeling, banana boat rides, fishing can be found and purchased at diving centers. They are available on any island and often there are several on popular local islands, sometimes four or more.

Activities on land or what to do in the Maldives

As I have already mentioned, the choice of entertainment on land is quite limited. On top of that, there is practically no nightlife in the Maldives: there are no nightclubs, discos, shopping streets or entertainment venues. By midnight, everything is already asleep. Shopping is also non-existent here as a class. There are no shopping centers or hypermarkets on the islands, only 2-3 small shops on the entire island with ice cream and snacks.

The main entertainment on land in the Maldives is beach relaxation. If you can lie on the beach all day without moving, then you will find it to your liking. There’s no shortage of that in the Maldives.

But for those who are bored, here are some activities that are available on almost any island:

• Yoga on the beach
• Beach volleyball
• For girls, there are various aerobics and stretching classes on the beach.
• That’s basically it.

For tourists whose island is relatively close to Male, there is an opportunity to go here for a day to explore the capital. And in the evening, return to the hotel on their own island. Here’s what you need to know about it:

• Arrange transfers to and from Male with your hotel (if you are on a resort) or take a public ferry (if you are on a local island).
• In Male, it’s enough to spend 4-6 hours to see the whole city. There’s nothing much to do for an overnight stay. You can arrive in the morning and return after lunch – that’s the most optimal plan.
• An overview of Male : what to visit, where to buy souvenirs, and how to get there. By the way, in Male you can and should buy all your souvenirs, as it will be cheaper than anywhere else and the selection is excellent.
• You can walk around Male by yourself, or you can find a local guide for a tour. Look for all walking tours of Male here, you won’t find them on site, as it is not a tourist city and there are no physical tour agencies here.

A walking tour of Male is perhaps the only possible land excursion in the Maldives.

Resort island day pass

A full-day visit to a resort island is also available for budget travelers who come to the Maldives to vacation on local islands. For those who cannot afford a luxurious private island resort, where a package tour costs $7-10,000 per week, there is an excellent opportunity to taste this type of vacation.

Almost any resort offers a day pass that includes access to all beaches, meals, alcohol, and loungers. Typically, such a pass allows you to stay on the resort during daylight hours. You will be brought to the resort in the morning by boat and taken back to your local island at sunset. Here’s what you need to know:

• The standard price of such a day pass is $100-150 per person, which already includes transportation.
• Always clarify if unlimited alcohol is included in this price, as sometimes it is not. And since there is no alcohol on local islands, it is an essential point for most people.
• The list of hotel resorts where you can spend a whole day can be obtained from any diving center on your island. Usually, these are resorts located within 10km of your local island.

Yes, it’s about $300 for a couple for a full day trip, which is not cheap, but on the other hand, tourists who stay there pay much more. Typically, only the price of a villa or bungalow at such resorts starts at $400-500 per day.

But here you can come, try what it’s like to relax on a private 5-star island resort, and decide for yourself if you need to take on another job in the future to stay at a resort like this in the Maldives.

In conclusion, excursions in Maldives may not offer a huge list of activities, as in neighboring tourist countries. But for those who love the beach and water sports, there is plenty to do here. Water-based activities are more than sufficient, and daily snorkeling with turtles, sharks, and manta rays overrides all the cons of limited excursion variety in the Maldives.

Island Hopping

Island hopping – see traditional Maldivian houses, with many made of local vegetation and thatch, or coral stones. You will also see the mosque where the Muslim people pray five times a day, visit the local island school and see the many beautiful children. The beauty, culture and way of life on a small island will be explained by your Guest Relations Officer as you make your way through the village.

Snorkeling is the practice of swimming on or through a body of water while equipped with a diving mask, a shaped breathing tube called a snorkel, and usually swim-fins.

Fish are the main attraction versus the coral/ sponges – excellent number and variety of fish. Reef access points have been introduced. Access is quite easy.   Walk across the island from the restaurant/ bar area to area shown on the map below as ‘good snorkeling’. Current – direction varies, off the North beach. Check the current, walk to your chosen end and wander in at signposted access point.   If current looks strong just wait a bit for it to weaken.

• Due to strong currents we do not recommend snorkeling or swimming on the east side of the island especially exit 6 – exit 8.
• Current movement changes from high to low tides during the same day, always check the current (Call reception to check tide movements)
• Stronger current warnings: Between exit 7 and 8.
• Point 3 – near Water Villa’s as it is further away.
• Do not ever snorkel near exit 7 – exit 8, due to very strong currents, even if you are an experienced swimmer. SAFETY COMES FIRST!

The best snorkeling area is a nice, extensive, house reef where visibility is usually good.

Our rental snorkeling equipment is in excellent condition and serviced as per manufacturer recommendations. We ensure that all of our snorkeler are equipped with essential in-water safety gear to comply with local snorkeling regulations. Snorkelers are most welcome to use their own personal snorkeling gear, and take full responsibility for the suitability and integrity of their personal equipment. Rental equipment is chargeable .

Whale Shark Snorkeling

Experience the uniqueness when you swim together with world’s largest fish. The whale shark can grow up to 12 to 18 meters which equals 39 to 59 feet. On this trip you will be taken by our experience boat crew to search for the whale shark for about an hour. When we spot the majestic whales sharks, you can plunge into the water with your snorkeling gear to enjoy a swim with this magnificent animal. In case that the whale shark cannot be found you will be taken to a beautiful reef where you can enjoy a variety of corals and fish.

Night Fishing

Enjoy the traditional Maldivian “hand – reel bottom fishing”, with our experienced Dhoni crew. You can catch Red Snapper, Barracuda, Groupers, all are fantastic for eating. The dhoni crew will search for the best place to fish and assists you with bait and reeling in the big ones. When you catch your own fish, the Chef will prepare it for you the following day for lunch or dinner in the Main Restaurant. Fishing is known to be relaxing, but add to this the serenity of being on the blue ocean and the song that it sings to you will make this trip a lasting memory.

We went on this trip in March 2013 and we had a wonderful time, as it was a great way to see such a beautiful place. The overall trip was excellent value and the itinerary enabled us to experience the Maldives in so many ways and also with a small group. We did both of the now optional extras and the crew on the boat were very friendly and helpful and the food was fabulous and in ample supply as well as variety to meet everyone’s taste’s. They also took us to great places for snorkeling which enabled us to see sea turtles, sting rays and even a shark not to mention the many species of beautifully coloured fish. We stayed at the Paradise Island resort and this was a lovely way to end the trip. We would not have thought to do such a trip and were glad that we took advantage of the discounts and booked it at the TNT Travel Show. Really enjoyed it! Good boat, good food, great snorkelling and also the CEO helped me so I could do a dive instead of snorkelling one of the days which I really appreciate. Could skip the beach clean up, not that its not needed but after collecting several of bags with trash the bags where just left on the island. Just left us all with a bad feeling, first of all seeing all the trash and then collecting as much as we could, was so much left though, just to leave it on the island in the end 🤷‍♀️. I've been on several all-inclusive vacations with my family, friends, and work, and I've helped other people book them in destinations around the world .

Costa Rica is one of the most sought-after vacations , and for good reason. It's great for both relaxation and adventure.

Baglioni Maldives is one of my favorite all-inclusive resorts.

For many in the US, getting to the islands can be daunting — there are very few direct commercial flights, and it can take almost an entire day. But it's hard to beat the country's luxury accommodations and gorgeous landscape.

The Maldives also has some of the most beautiful marine life and coveted spots for snorkeling and scuba diving.

No matter where you go, overwater bungalows are the ultimate all-inclusive splurge.

Overwater bungalows — villas standing on poles over open ocean water — are prevalent at all-inclusive resorts in destinations like the Maldives, Fiji, and Bali.

But I've also come across the luxurious accommodations at select adults-only Sandals Resorts throughout the Caribbean.

I think having a private villa on the water is the perfect way to unwind and relax.

Adults-only vacations are on the rise.

Traveling with kids can be a blast, but I also think it's important for adults to take a much-needed break on their own.

Adults-only resorts have been a total respite for me and my husband after hectic months of juggling work with our kids' school and sports schedules.

If you're looking to unwind with a partner, relax on a girls' trip, or even connect with your adult children, there are countless adults-only, all-inclusive resorts to choose from, depending on where you're looking to visit.

Some properties, including Sandals and Beaches Resorts, also offer butler service. Designated staff members can help with anything from room requests and dining reservations to cabana rentals and transportation coordination.

I upgraded to the service at my favorite adults-only spot, Le Blanc Los Cabos, and I felt totally pampered.

Isla Mujeres is pure luxury.

Isla Mujeres, a small island off the coast of Cancún, is known for its crystal-clear, turquoise water and peaceful vibe. It's also home to Playa Norte, one of the best beaches in Mexico .

Impressions Isla Mujeres by Secrets is a gorgeous all-inclusive resort on the island. It offers luxury at its finest, but with only 125 rooms, it has a boutique feel.

One of my favorite features of the resort is the waterslide that leads right into the beautiful ocean.

There are plenty of all-inclusive packages at sea.

Cruising is one of the most popular vacations , whether it's an epic adventure on a Royal Caribbean Cruise, a couples-only journey on Virgin Voyages, or a regal tour of Europe on Viking River Cruises.

Although cruises aren't traditionally considered all-inclusive, with the right booking, they can have the same feel as a luxury resort.

Most cruise bookings include food, nonalcoholic drinks, and live entertainment. If you add beverage packages and excursions in advance, your trip should be fully paid for before you depart.

Book a small-group or private tour if you're looking for adventure.

Group travel is a great way to explore new places while soaking up culture and history.

Popular destinations include Italy, Japan, Costa Rica, and Alaska, and many travel companies take care of everything for you, essentially making it all-inclusive.
