How to Customize Browser Appearance on Microsoft Edge
It's free and super easy to set up
Microsoft Edge is a popular browser that comes pre-installed on Windows 10 devices. It is known for its innovative design, user-friendly interface, and customization options. In this article, we will explore how to customize the appearance of Microsoft Edge, including adjusting the theme, font settings, and start page to enhance your browsing experience.
Understanding Microsoft Edge Customization Options
Microsoft Edge is a popular web browser that offers users a wide range of customization options. By tweaking the browser's settings, users can personalize their browsing experience and make it more enjoyable. In this article, we will explore some of the customization options available in Microsoft Edge and how to use them.
Theme Selection
The theme of a browser affects the color and style of the interface, making it easier on the eyes and more aesthetically pleasing. Microsoft Edge offers a variety of themes that you can select from, each with a different color scheme and style. To view the available themes, go to Settings > Appearance and click on "Theme". Here, you can select from default themes or install a new one.
For instance, if you prefer a minimalist look, you can choose the "Light" theme, which has a clean and simple design. On the other hand, if you want to add a pop of color to your browsing experience, you can select the "Colorful" theme, which has bright and vibrant hues.
Customizing the Start Page
The start page is the page that appears when you open Microsoft Edge or create a new tab. You can customize this page to include your favorite content, such as frequently visited sites, news, or weather. To customize the start page, go to Settings > On Startup. Here, you can choose a layout, add or remove content, and set a custom background.
For example, if you're an avid news reader, you can set up your start page to display the latest headlines from your favorite news sources. Alternatively, if you're a weather enthusiast, you can add a weather widget to your start page to keep track of the forecast.
Adjusting Font Settings
The font settings in Microsoft Edge allow you to adjust the size and style of the text in the browser. This can be helpful for users who have difficulty reading small text or prefer a specific font. To access font settings, go to Settings > Appearance. Here, you can choose the font size, default font, and customize font styles.
If you're someone who spends a lot of time reading online, you may want to increase the font size to make text easier to read. Additionally, if you have a preferred font that you find more readable, you can select it as the default font in Microsoft Edge.
Enabling Dark Mode
Dark mode is a popular option for users who prefer a darker interface. This mode reduces the amount of blue light emitted by the screen, making it more comfortable to view in low-light environments. To enable dark mode, go to Settings > Appearance and select "Dark" under the "Choose a theme" section.
Dark mode can be particularly useful for users who work late at night or in dimly lit environments. By reducing the amount of blue light, dark mode can help reduce eye strain and improve overall comfort while browsing the web.
Overall, Microsoft Edge offers a range of customization options that can help users personalize their browsing experience. By taking advantage of these options, users can create a browser that is tailored to their preferences and needs.
Changing the Browser Theme
Now that we have a better understanding of the customization options available, let's dive into the specifics of changing the browser's theme. There are default themes available in Microsoft Edge, as well as the option to install new themes.
Default Themes
Microsoft Edge offers several default themes that you can choose from. To select a default theme, go to Settings > Appearance and click on "Theme". Here, you can view the available themes and choose the one that suits your preferences. Some of the default themes include Light, Dark, Default, and Unique.
Installing New Themes
If the default themes in Microsoft Edge do not suit your preferences, you can install new themes from the Microsoft Store. To do this, go to the Microsoft Store and search for "Microsoft Edge themes". Here, you can browse and install a variety of themes, including nature, abstract, and gaming-themed options.
Switching Between Themes
Once you have selected or installed a new theme, you can easily switch between them in Microsoft Edge. To do this, go to Settings > Appearance and click on "Theme". Here, you can select the theme that you want to use and apply it to your browser.
The start page of Microsoft Edge can be customized to include your favorite content and make browsing more convenient. Here are the customization options available:
Choosing a Layout
Microsoft Edge offers three layout options for the start page. These include "Focused", "Inspirational", and "Informational". You can choose the layout that best suits your browsing needs and preferences.
Adding or Removing Content
The content on the start page can be customized to include the sites and information that you use the most. This can include frequently visited sites, news, or weather. You can add or remove content by clicking on the "+ Add" or "Remove" buttons on the start page.
Setting a Custom Background
If you want to personalize your browsing experience even further, you can set a custom background for the start page. To do this, click on the "Custom" button under the "Background" section of the start page and select an image from your computer.
The font settings in Microsoft Edge can be adjusted to improve readability and enhance your browsing experience. Here are the customization options available:
Changing Font Size
If you find the text in Microsoft Edge too small or too large, you can adjust the font size to make it more comfortable to read. To do this, go to Settings > Appearance and select the font size that suits your needs.
Choosing a Default Font
Microsoft Edge offers several default fonts to choose from, including Arial, Calibri, and Times New Roman. To select a default font, go to Settings > Appearance and select the font that you prefer.
Customizing Font Styles
If you want to further customize the appearance of text in Microsoft Edge, you can adjust the font style. This includes options such as bold, italic, and underline. To do this, go to Settings > Appearance and select the font style that you prefer.
Customizing the appearance of Microsoft Edge can make browsing more enjoyable and convenient. By adjusting the theme, font settings, and start page, you can tailor the browser to your preferences and make it work better for you. With the customization options available in Microsoft Edge, the possibilities are endless.

Make your web browser more exciting, because you deserve it
Put some wowzer in your browser.

This story has been updated. It was originally published on September 24, 2019.
You probably use your web browser daily for both work and play, but you don’t have to just accept your window to the web as it was when you first installed it. Each popular browser actually offers fairly extensive customization options you should really be taking advantage of.
Whether you want easier access to a much-used browser extension, or you’ve gotten tired of your browser’s default colors, you can tweak the individual interfaces of Google Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Microsoft Edge in numerous ways.
How to customize Google Chrome
Play around with Chrome’s appearance by opening the browser’s menu (the three vertical dots in the top right) and choosing Settings , Appearance , and then Theme . This will take you to the Chrome Web Store, where, you’ll find a host of visual options—from a simple cool blue look to more elaborate designs based on space imagery—all made by other Chrome users and Google itself. Click on any theme to install it.
Next to the Themes link within the Settings tab you’ll find a Reset to default button that will revert Chrome to its original look and remove the theme you’ve got installed. Another appearance customization is directly underneath—a toggle switch that lets you choose whether or not a “home” button appears on the toolbar.
Beyond the extensive selection of themes, however, there are only a few other customization options in terms of how Chrome looks. You can select which extensions and add-ons get shortcuts on the toolbar, though. Just choose Extensions from the main Chrome settings sidebar, then dive into the individual options for each extension. Sometimes, you’ll be able to add an extension to the toolbar by toggling it off and on again on the same screen.
Chrome also lets you drag icons around on the toolbar to reposition them. And if the top of your window starts to get a little too crowded, you can also right-click on a toolbar icon to choose where it appears ( Manage Extensions ) or completely remove it from your browser ( Remove from Chrome ). You can quickly access all extensions by clicking the puzzle piece icon on the toolbar and selecting Manage Extensions at the bottom of the dropdown menu.
How to customize Firefox
Head to the main app menu (the button with three lines in the top right), then choose More Tools and Customize Toolbar to change the buttons and shortcuts available in Firefox. Simply drag and drop icons from the main list to the toolbar at the top, or drag them out again to remove them. Firefox also lets you drag icons around on the toolbar to reposition them.
Drag shortcuts up to the top right to place them in what Firefox calls the Overflow Menu (the two greater-than symbols). They won’t take up room on the toolbar, but will be accessible in a couple of clicks—another option if you want to keep something close at hand. To go back to the way Firefox was when you first installed it, click Restore Defaults .
To really revamp the look of Firefox, click the Themes button at the bottom, which will let you switch between the browser’s built-in light, dark, and “alpenglow” themes. Doing so will change the color of the toolbar, the toolbar buttons, the browser menus, the “new tab” screen, and various other bits of the browser interface.
If you select Themes and then Get More Themes , you’ll find yourself in a library of thousands of themes made by Mozilla and Firefox users—get yourself a colorful background image for the tabs bar, change everything in the browser to various shades of blue, or install whatever else catches your eye in the themes gallery.
How to customize Safari
In Safari on macOS, open the View menu, then choose Customize Toolbar . A new panel will appear that will let you drag buttons to and from the toolbar, including those for sharing pages, opening your browsing history, and showing your most-visited sites. Any extensions you’ve added might have their own buttons, too.
You can also rearrange buttons on the toolbar itself—just click and drag them to a new position. At the bottom of the panel is the default set of buttons, so you can drag this up to the toolbar if you want to undo all your changes and go back to how Safari originally looked.
That’s the toolbar, but if you’re using a more recent MacBook Pro , you’ll be able to customize the Touch Bar above the laptop keyboard as well—it’s the Customize Touch Bar option on the View menu. Again, use the trackpad (or your mouse) to drag buttons on or off the Touch Bar. Share , New Tab , and Home are some of the options you’ll see.
You don’t get many other options when it comes to customizing Safari’s appearance—you’re pretty much stuck with what Apple gives you. Still, the View menu does let you show or hide various bits of screen furniture (like the status bar that displays URLs as you hover over links), and you can tweak a few other settings (such as when your web history automatically deletes) if you head to Safari Preferences by choosing Preferences from the Safari menu.
How to customize Microsoft Edge
The new Edge, built on Chrome, should make you forget Internet Explorer ever existed , and it—like the others—has many customization options. Click the menu button (three dots in the top right), then choose Settings and Appearance . From here, you can switch between the light, dark, and many other themes, and choose whether or not a “home” button appears on the toolbar.
When you add a new extension to Edge, a button for it appears by default on the toolbar (if the add-on needs one). Right-click any of these icons and choose Move to the menu to do just that—the shortcuts won’t take up space on the toolbar but will still be easily accessible via the Edge menu (the three dots).
You can also drag extension icons around to reposition them on the toolbar. Right-click a shortcut icon in the Edge menu and you’ll be able to reinstate it by choosing Move to the toolbar .

How to customize Microsoft Edge on Mac
Microsoft Edge offers a fresh take on web browsing on Mac. Built with open-source Chromium, the browser includes several customization tools to make it your own.
Let's do this!
Create a personalized tab page, set your level of protection, change the theme, change the home page.
Mac users should take it this new browser from Microsoft out for a test drive and not feel guilty about it.
Whenever you open a new tab in Microsoft Edge, you're presented with an informative page that you can customize according to your needs. You can use one of three canned layouts or go further by selecting a custom option.
The layouts include:
- Focused : On this design, you'll find a large Bing web search box on this page followed by quick links to your most visited websites. You can add and delete more sites to this list with ease. At the bottom of the page is a link for Microsoft News. When clicked, your tab page extends down to a fully customizable Microsoft News subpage.
- Inspiration : This layout looks very similar to Focused. However, instead of a white or black background (see below), it includes a photo of the day. A slightly smaller Bing web search box is offered here along with the quick links to your most visited websites. There's also a link for Microsoft news.
- Informational : With this layout, the search box is shrunk even further as are the quick links. In the remaining space, you'll see the top of the Microsoft News subpage. Scroll to see more of today's news.
Regardless of the layout, you select, you can customize the tab screen further by turning the picture of the day on or off, removing the quick links, and changing how Microsoft News content on the page is viewed. Choices include:
- Content Visible is how Microsoft News gets viewed with the Informational layout.
- Headings Only shows only the categories from Microsoft News on the layout page.
- Content Visible on Scroll is Microsoft News viewed through the Focused layout.
- Content Off removes all Microsoft News content.
As part of the Microsoft Edge tab page customization, you can also change the language. There are over 20 languages available at launch.
How to customize your personalized tab page
- Click the + on the tab line in Microsoft Edge to activate a new page.
- Choose the settings wheel at the top right on the recently opened page.
- On the pull-down, select your layout , choosing from Focused, Inspiration, or Informational.
- If applicable, click the default language under Language & Content to make a change, choosing from the pull-down.
To further customize the personalized tab page:
- Select Custom under the three layout choices mentioned above.
- Toggle Show Quick Links on/off.
- Toggle Image of the day on/off.
- Click the Content pull-down to make changes to how content is viewed.
You'll see your newly created tab page each time you open a new tab.

Microsoft Edge offers three levels of protection when it comes to web trackers. These are those pesky tools that companies use to collect data about how we interact with a site. By doing so, they can offer web content and ads customized for your benefit. Unfortunately, some web trackers can harm. Microsoft Edge addresses good and bad web trackers in a way that other browsers do not. Rather than taking an all-or-nothing approach, the browser offers three levels of tracking prevention for which to choose. These include Basic, Balanced, and Strict tracking.
Under the Basic setting, Microsoft blocks trackers it thinks are potentially harmful while allowing others that are intended to personalize your web content and ads. With the Microsoft-recommended Balanced approach, the browser blocks harmful trackers and those from sites you haven't visited. More security, however, means you'll receive a less robust and personalized experience compared to the Basic option.
With Strict tracking, Microsoft blocks harmful trackers and the majority of all trackers across most sites. Under this scenario, your surfing experience becomes even less personalized. Depending on the site, the limit could also disable video and login capabilities.
How to choose a level of protection in Microsoft Edge
- Choose Microsoft Edge from the Microsoft Edge active toolbar on your Mac.
- Click Preferences on the pull-down menu.
- Select Privacy and Services under Settings on the left side of the screen.
- Select your level of protection, choosing from Basic, Balanced, or Stict.
You can change your privacy selection at any time.
At launch, there's not much you can do with Microsoft Edge in terms of changing the theme. The choices are Light, Dark, and System Default. When the last one is selected, the theme will depend on the system theme you're using on the Mac. If you're using Dark Mode , for example, the theme will be the same through Microsoft Edge.
To adjust the theme:
- Select Appearance under Settings on the left side of the screen.
The Microsoft Edge home page is the one that shows up whenever you click on the Home icon. It's not the tab page from above.
To change the home page:
- Select from one of the two radio buttons under Show home button. The choices are New tab page or you can add one of your own.
In the example above, the iMore website has been selected as the home page.

Microsoft Edge is now more popular than Safari on desktop, according to StatCounter
Over the past year, Apple's Safari browser has lost users, while Microsoft's Edge browser has increased its user global user base.
It was a long time ago, but there used to be a simpler time when you could only open Microsoft Internet Explorer or Apple Safari and do your web browsing. Today, the landscape has changed drastically, with a plethora of web browser options being made available to users. Google's Chrome has consistently dominated, retaining the lion's share of the global market. But, it looks like Microsoft's Edge browser has been quietly adding users over the past year, enough to surpass Apple's Safari browser.
According to Statcounter, Microsoft Edge has by a small margin, increased its worldwide market share to overtake Apple's Safari browser. The former with 10.07% and the latter with 9.61%. As mentioned previously, the top spot is held by Google's Chrome browser, dominating with a worldwide market share of 66.64%.
Although this is quite interesting, things change quite a bit when shifting regions. When accounting for just the United States, Safari comes in with 17.09% and Microsoft Edge at 12.54%. In Europe, we see a bigger shake up on the with Firefox taking the number two spot with 12.58%, Microsoft Edge coming in close with 11.75%, and Safari in fourth place with 9.34%. As a disclaimer, these statistics are just for desktop browsers.
But globally, it would appear that Microsoft Edge has grown over the past year. In March 2021, the browser had a global market share of 8.03%, while in April 2022, there was growth to 10.07%. Apple's Safari browser during the same time saw a decrease in market share, going from 10.11% to 9.62%.
There could be a number of reasons why more users are attracted to using Microsoft's Edge browser. But perhaps the most important is Microsoft's move to a Chromium-based browser . The Chromium-based Edge browser was initially an option, but Microsoft later pushed the update to Windows users, replacing its old Edge browser. Microsoft has also done quite a bit of work to not only improve its browsers, but to also consistently add new features along the way.
Maybe now is the perfect time for Apple to bring back Safari to Windows ?

Click the "Theme" box under Customize browser and select "Dark."
By default, Edge is set to the "Light" theme. You can also select the "System default" option, and Edge will follow the Windows theme option you chose in the Settings app. If you set system accent colors, it will also use those for the title bar and window frame.
Websites can choose to obey your browser's dark theme , but almost no websites actually will yet. The Edge browser is based on Chromium, however, and contains the same experimental "force dark mode" option found in Google Chrome .
To enable it, type "edge://flags" into Edge's address bar and press Enter.
Search for "Dark Mode" in the search box at the top of the Experiments page. Click the "Force Dark Mode for Web Contents" box and select "Enabled."
When you're done, click "Restart." Microsoft Edge will close all your open Edge browser windows and reopen them. You won't lose your open tabs, but be sure you've saved any work (such as data entered in forms) on the web pages before continuing.
Browse around and see how it works. You can disable this option by heading back to the Flags page, setting the "Force Dark Mode for Web Contents" option to "Default," and restarting Edge once again.
Support for the classic, non-Chromium Edge ended in Spring 2021.
To enable dark mode in the original version of Edge for Windows 10, click the menu button, and then select the "Settings" command.
Related: How to Enable Dark Mode in Windows 10
Click the "Choose a theme" box near the top of the Settings pane, and then select the "Dark" option.
Edge immediately switches to a dark theme, whether or not you're using Windows 10's dark app theme. You can return here and switch Edge back to light mode whenever you want.
This setting is completely independent from the system-wide app theme you can select in Windows 10's Settings app. For example, you could use a dark Edge browser theme while using the standard light app mode for all your other apps.
The theme option only changes Edge's interface, not the websites you view in Edge. To make web pages appear darker in the classic version of Microsoft Edge, try installing an extension like Turn Off the Lights , available in the Microsoft Store.
This extension is primarily intended for watching videos on the web with a dark background, but it can also apply a dark theme to every web page you view. It works a bit like the Dark Reader extension for Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox .
After installing this extension, click menu > Extensions > Turn Off the Lights > Options to configure it.
Switch to the "Night Mode" tab, and then select the "Show the night switch button below the web page to make the page dark or light" option on the right. The extension places a button on each web page that will put it into Night Mode.
You can also enable the "Automatically go to Night Mode when a new web page is opened" option to always use Night Mode by default.
Configure the other options here to work however you like---for example, you could set the Night Mode switch to only appear during nighttime hours and not appear during daytime hours.
While viewing a web page, click the "Night Mode" button at the bottom left corner of the page to toggle the dark website style on or off.
If you decide you'd rather not use the dark website style in the future, you can click menu > Extensions in Edge to configure, disable, or uninstall the Turn Off the Lights extension.
Safari vs. Edge: Which Browser Is Better for Mac?
Microsoft's Edge browser is rapidly gaining popularity, but does it beat Safari on a Mac?
Microsoft Edge has quickly become a serious contender for many people’s coveted “Default Browser” position. This is true even on Macs, because, though Edge was made to be the default Windows 10 browser, it works really well in macOS.
But how does Edge compare to Safari, Apple's own default Mac browser?
We’ve pitted the browsers against each other in some key categories, and we found some surprising results. Read on to not only see which browser is better for Mac overall, but to decide which might be better for your Mac going forward!
It’s very likely you’ll spend a lot of time staring at your internet browser as you use your Mac. Therefore, it’s nice to have a browser that’s nice to look at. Between Edge and Safari, is there a browser that has a more visually appealing design?
We personally think both are sleek, with user interfaces that are pretty easy to jump into and understand.
Safari relies a lot more on icons, but looking at them might be easier than Edge’s slightly more minimal top menus. Safari also offers Dark Mode, if you prefer that look, or want that to activate it at a particular time of day.
Edge looks and acts a lot like Chrome, but with a few more appearance customizations. You can change Edge’s theme to switch up its entire color palette, and every time you open a new tab you can see a beautiful picture along with some news articles.
With new tabs in Safari, you can select a particular picture to be the background image. You won’t see headlines, but you’ll see your favorites, your frequently visited pages, and a Privacy Report.
So each browser is attractive, and customizable in some way. Edge’s themes make its design options a bit more varied, but Safari offers control over new tab customization. So this category might come down to personal preference.
Security and Privacy
When it comes to browsing the internet safely and anonymously, you can do so with both Edge and Safari. Though Safari might just be the better option.
There are several Safari features that boost privacy and security , including Intelligent Tracking Prevention, Privacy Reports, and a robust password manager that lets you know if your passwords have been detected in known data leaks.
Edge also blocks online tracking and will block access to potentially malicious sites via the built-in Microsoft Defender SmartScreen program. You will also soon be able to enjoy a super duper secure mode in Edge for correcting a flaw in JavaScript that can let in malicious code.
But Safari offers more customization with its tracking prevention, and its Privacy Report feature gives you a better idea of who’s after your data than anything Edge offers.
So in the battle for keeping your Mac safe and secure while you’re online, we’d say Safari is the winner here.
Organization
If you’re doing any sort of research online for something you want to buy or for a work task, it’s extremely helpful to have a browser that can keep you organized. Both Safari and Microsoft Edge can do that, but Edge a bit more so.
This is mainly because of Edge’s Collections feature. Rather than simply bookmarking important web pages, Edge lets you save webpages in groups you create, called Collections.
You could make a Collection of gift ideas for someone, and another one for vacation destinations. Then you could switch between them whenever you need to. You could also make a Collection for a research project or for important webpages you use at work a lot.
Collections can be shared with other Edge users, which is great for group work and event planning.
There are also hidden features in Edge , like the ability to pin tabs in a browser window, so you can never accidentally close an important resource, and you can always keep certain pages open when you open the browser. You can also orient its tabs vertically, if that helps you keep track of them more easily.
Safari also lets you pin tabs, and you'll soon be able to group tabs together in Safari with the macOS Monterey update. Tab groups seem to work like Collections, but Edge has one other feature we think puts it just above Safari in this category—Profiles.
When you make a profile in Edge, you can customize the bookmarks, Collections, pinned tabs, and appearance of that particular profile. Meaning you can make a work profile, and keep everything on it work-oriented, as well as home profile for fun and games.
You can of course keep tabs and windows organized in Safari. Edge just offers a few more features for it that we think can really help you out. So in terms of organization, we say Edge is the better Mac browser.
Safari and Edge both come with great features, but you can add even more via browser extensions. Extensions are downloaded and once added can act as ad blockers, grammar editors, tab managers, and so much more depending on what ones you get.
You can get many of the same extensions on Edge and Safari thanks to developers ensuring they can be downloaded on both. Or rather, developers have made sure their extensions are available on the Mac App Store and the Chrome Web Store for this purpose.
Yes, Edge extensions are really Google Chrome extensions. Edge was designed to allow users to use Chrome Web Store extensions with it, as a large library of them already exist. We have a few favorites, like our list of the best Chrome extensions for managing your reading list .
Safari predictably makes use of the Mac App Store for its extensions. The Chrome Web Store has more extensions available than the Mac App Store, so in terms of numbers, Edge is the winner here.
But Chrome extensions make Chrome, and therefore Edge, drain a lot of your CPU. Therefore, this category can go either way for us. If you want lots of extension options, you probably want Edge. If you want your Mac to run quickly and efficiently despite extensions, you should use Safari.
Performance
In addition to everything we’ve listed above, it’s important to consider which browser, Safari or Edge, works best on a Mac. In this regard, we think each browser has different strengths.
Edge is faster than Firefox , and faster than Safari per a HTML5test.com run for both browsers. It also has a built-in task manager that allows you to quit individual pages and processes to further speed up and improve its performance on your Mac.
Safari, meanwhile, can allow for 1.5 hours more streaming and up to 1 hour more browsing than Chrome and Firefox on a single charge, according to Apple . With the ability to stream in 4K and still pretty incredible speeds, it’s a powerful browser on a Mac.
This might be yet another draw category, but there is an important aspect to consider. Ultimately, because Safari and Macs are both made by Apple, Safari will always be optimized for Mac performance. Edge has historically been updated on new PCs first, and other systems second.
You might, therefore, get a better performance out of the Mac-native Safari in the long term. But Edge is still speedier right now, and that might be a major consideration for you.
Safari vs. Edge: Which One Wins on Mac?
Safari and Edge are hardly duplicates of one another, but it turns out they both work remarkably well on Mac. Based on our above categories, Safari might eke out the win here if you like its design or extension options more.
But if you prefer Edge on your Mac, or think it wins above based on your own needs, we’d still highly recommend it as a Mac browser. Regardless of which browser becomes your default, you’ll get a powerful, secure program letting your browse and stream quickly and easily.

Apple's Safari Again Overtakes Microsoft Edge as Second Most Popular Desktop Browser
Apple's Safari has retaken the lead over Microsoft Edge to become the world's second most popular desktop browser, based on data provided by web analytics service StatCounter .
- Chrome 66.13%
- Safari 11.87%
- Firefox 5.65%
- Opera 3.09%
The stats look favorable for Apple compared to the same time last year , when Edge trumped Safari for second place by a small sub one-percent margin, owing to broadly positive reception of Microsoft's reimagined default browser for Windows 11.
Apple's resurgence in the browser wars corresponds to a marked increase in global Mac sales in 2022, despite supply constraints throughout the course of the year. Interest in the ‌ M1 ‌, M1 Pro , M1 Max , M1 Ultra , and M2 chips saw Apple's Mac revenue hit $11.5 billion in the fourth quarter of 2022, up $2.5 billion year over year.
In fiscal 2022, Macs earned a total of $40.1 billion, up $5 billion from the $35 billion that Macs earned in fiscal 2021. In Q4 2022, half of Mac buyers were new to the product line, giving macOS and Apple's default Safari browser significantly more exposure.
Despite Safari's surge, it has made virtually no progress in catching up to first-placed Google Chrome, which retains an iron-clad grip on the market, with its share down just 0.51 percent compared to the previous year. Chrome's popularity on both macOS and Windows platforms continues largely unabated.

Microsoft’s Edge challenges Safari as second most-popular browser
Edge is on the cusp of edging out Safari as the second most-popular browser, according to more than one web analytics service. But when it comes to the iPhone and iPad, there's no contest: Safari remains No. 1.
Microsoft Edge is now used on 9.54% of desktops worldwide, just behind Safari at 9.84%, according to data published this week by web analytics service StatCounter . It’s the highest market share for Edge reported by StatCounter to date.
Google Chrome still holds the top spot by a long shot at 65.38%, with Mozilla Firefox bringing up the rear with 9.18% market share. The new data was first reported by TechRadar .
Edge’s lead on other browsers differs greatly depending on location. For example, in the US , Edge is well behind Safari — Edge has just 12.1% market share while Safari claims 18.2%. In Europe and Asia, Edge has already passed Safari, with 10.9% and 7.46%, respectively. Apple’s Safari runs on 9.95% of desktops in Europe and just 5.41% of desktops in Asia.
All in all, Edge is now a worthy competitor to Goggle Chrome, with rivals such as Firefox apparently losing the limited popularity they already had, according to Jack Gold, president and principal analyst at J. Gold Associates.
In 2020, Microsoft relaunched Edge , recasting it with Google’s dominant Chromium technology; it’s the same browser code that powers Chrome. Not only did Microsoft make Edge a Chrome copy, it also expanded support to versions of Windows other than 10, including macOS and Linux.
“For one thing, when Microsoft switched to a Chromium engine, Edge got a lot faster and more compatible with more websites that, because of the preponderance of Google Chrome browsers, were built to be compatible with Chrome and not the older Edge (it had some unique requirements for full compatibility),” Gold said.
Microsoft also upped Edge’s game around security and privacy, Gold said. And, while it’s not perfect, it does “a pretty good job of filtering out all the garbage people throw at you when browsing.
“And the link to Microsoft security helps with keeping away malware and malicious sites. But of course, Microsoft also has the advantage of putting Edge on every Windows machine, so there is a natural built-in use case for people who don’t want to bother with downloading an alternative,” Gold added.
Of course, Safari’s lane is as a default browser on the Apple iPhone and iPad tablet. On those devices, it’s a very different story . Chrome has 46.3%, Safari nets 39.4%, and Android claims just 12.6% of traffic.
Some web analytics services already have Edge surpassing all other browsers except the ever-dominant Chrome. For example, Net MarketShare’s most recent data has Chrome at 69% market share, Edge at 7.75%, and Firefox at 7.48%. Safari is a distant fourth, with just 3.73%.
Safari’s popularity in some quarters may, in fact, be waning — if Twitter comments can be a measurement of its popularity.
Earlier this month, an Apple employee who advocates for Safari developers got an eyeful after taking to Twitter to ask users for feedback on why the Safari browser is unpopular and to ask that they point out specific issues with it.
Jen Simmons, an Apple evangelist and developer advocate on the Web Developer Experience team for Safari and WebKit, was clearly taken aback by the responses.
“Catching up with tech Twitter this morning and there seems to be an angry pocket of men who really want Safari to just go away,” Simmons tweeted. “Do we really want to live in a 95% Chromium browser world? That would be a horrible future for the web. We need more voices, not fewer.”
Unlike some rival browsers, such as Firefox, Apple’s updates to Safari are sparse, with major upgrades just once a year. So the bulk of new features are often rolled out in a single instance. While that may be appealing for some who dislike frequent browser updates, it also means upgrades and/or fixes for Safari don’t come often.
In recent years, however, Safari has borne a raft of complaints about the browser’s bugs, user interface and experience, and website compatibility, according to MacRumors . Last June, Apple unveiled a substantial redesign of Safari at the company’s Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC). Many of those changes, however, were met with quick criticism describing them as “counterintuitive.”
Apple went through several iterations of the browser during the summer — both on mobile devices and desktops — and allowed users to largely revert to the previous Safari design prior to the release of iOS 15, iPadOS 15, and macOS Monterey.
“Everyone in my mentions [is] saying Safari is the worst, it’s the new IE,” Simmons tweeted.
Hoping to get to the bottom of the anger, Simmons asked Twitter users to point to specific bugs and missing support that frustrate them or make it harder for them to create websites or apps. “Bonus points for links to tickets,” she wrote.
“Specifics we can fix. Vague hate is honestly super counterproductive,” she added.

How to Change a Safari Browser Theme
Zoheb / Important , Technology Tips mac tips /
Please Subscribe to our YouTube Channel
Safari is the Mac operating system’s standard web browser. Most Mac users quite reasonably use the Safari browser bundled with the operating system. It requires minimal system resources, is easy to manage, and has all the vital functions. Like most Mac apps, Safari lacks theme support, and the UI can only be changed when the system-wide theme is changed. This does not preclude you from customizing Safari’s image. The basic Safari web browsing theme can be transformed into any number of predefined themes, thanks to several Safari extensions and settings.
How to Change the Default font of the websites you browse?
- Open Safari Browser, click on the Safari option in the Menu, and then click on the Settings option.
- Click on the Advanced option, then click on the Stylesheet option, and then select the Other option. It will ask you to select a file, but we don’t have it yet. Let’s create one first.
- html body { font-family: cursive!important; }
- Replace “cursive” with any font name you like. You must write the font name in the correct format. You can get the font names here .
- Now save the file with the name “font.css”. The name could be anything you want, but .css must be added.
- Now go back to safari and the file you saved by going to Safari’s Settings –> Advanced –> Stylesheet.
How to turn on dark mode on Safari
Safari dark mode is a great option that helps minimize eye strain and makes it simpler to focus on content. If it is enabled on your Mac, you know that not all sites support dark mode. Fortunately, you can fix it. Below we will talk about several tools that add dark mode to almost all sites in Safari on Mac.
Dark Mode for Safari ( available in the App Store ) is a program that can add dark mode to almost any website. After you install it, a convenient button will appear on the Safari menu bar, with which you can configure the program. You can enable and disable the dark mode, synchronize it with the standard system dark mode, or set up a schedule for it. In addition, you can choose between different themes. For example, there is a normal dark mode, and there is a softer dark mode. You can modify the lightness manually or make everything black and white. There are also filters for websites. You can add sites to exceptions or use dark mode only for some sites. This is very convenient if there are sites that you do not like with dark mode.
If you do not want to spend much money without trying the program, you can use Night Eye for Safari ( available in the App Store ) because it has a free three-month trial subscription. It also adds a button to the browser menu bar, with which you can control the program. You can enable and disable the dark mode, configure a schedule for it, set it by default, or synchronize it with the system one. There are three different themes available. But beyond that, you can manually adjust brightness, contrast, saturation, blue light, and fade. You can also select exception sites for this program.
How do I set my background in Safari? Customize the built-in browser
It is as simple and beautiful as possible. Mac has given users a lot of new and pleasant bonuses in terms of optimizing the OS for their needs. One of the nice additions was the ability to customize the browser. For example, being able to set your image as a background.
How can this be done?
If you already have an image ready to use as a background, just drag it to the Safari start page. The second way is to right-click on the home page in an empty area and select “Choose Background”. After that, a Finder window will open where you can choose the image.
If you want to select some cool theme-like backgrounds that come preloaded with safari Browser, you can follow these quick steps:
- Open a new blank tab in Safari
- Click on the three dots icon (located at the bottom left corner) and then click on any image (that will make the next image appear itself). If you click on the + icon, it will take you to the folder where Mac’s default wallpapers are saved which can also be selected as background, or browse to any folder to choose your desired image.
More useful extensions for Safari
We have already written about switching to dark mode. Here is one more helpful option. If you like reading text on a white web page background, you might get tired quickly. In this case, you should try the Neo Noir – dark mode for Safari extension ( available in the App Store) . It makes all web pages dark. The only drawback is that some elements remain light, but this rarely happens.
An interesting extension that will decorate your Safari is called PrettyWeb ( available in the App Store) . You can choose wallpapers or colors from the internet by setting the browser background. In addition, it has a dark theme. The extension is free and does not contain in-app purchases.
Momentum extension ( available in the App Store) can be highly recommended as well. What needs to be said first is that it sets a cool background from its wallpaper library. Secondly, it reflects the goal for the day – it allows you not to be distracted and procrastinate less often so as not to forget why you logged into Safari.Â
The HyperWeb extension ( available in the App Store) allows you to customize almost all elements in Safari, block ads, and even customize the design of web pages. The application itself is as convenient as possible and selects the recommended improvements without any effort on your end.
Looking for something else that is not mentioned here?
There might be other things that you are looking for. If this is the case, just open the App Store, and click on the Category option. Then select Safari Extension to browse all the tension or just have a look at the popular extensions.
Safari has a variety of fantastic and unique options that will make your surfing easy and convenient. It is a safe and reliable browser that can improve the browsing experience on Mac. And using the tips described above will help to customize your browser according to your needs and wishes. I hope this will help you to make your Safari browser look according to your need.
